I first had Poke in Hawaii. It’s a favorite of the fa islanders there is and is even an available readyav made in local ma supermarkets. sup sauce and instead Poke is essentially sashimi with a sau of thin slices, it’s cut into cubes and then marinated in soy, lime, sesame oil and whatever else tickles your fancy. I like mine to have a bite and add fresh chilies, Tabasco or cayenne and sometimes all three if I’m feeling particularly feisty. This recipe serves one as a main course or two with other dishes.
Ayu Spicy’s Poke
Serves 1-2
Ingredients: - 2 Tbl. lime juice - 2 Tbl. soy sauce - 2 tsp. sesame oil (be sure to read the label so you are getting 100% toasted sesame oil) - 1-2 dashes Tabasco or 1 small green chili seeded and minced, or 1/8 tsp. cayenne - 1 tsp. freshly grated ginger - 1 Tbl. chopped spring onion - 1 Tbl. coriander leaves torn by hand - 200 grams fresh sashimi tuna (I like to buy it at Papaya, the Japanese supermarket, where I trust that it’s fresh) - 2 cups of shredded lettuce of your choice - 1/2 tsp. toasted sesame seeds Directions: Make the sauce by whisking together the lime juice, soy sauce, sesame oil and Tabasco in a medium sized bowl. Add the ginger, spring onions, and coriander leaves. Taste and adjust to your palate. You can add a little water if the taste is too strong for you, but I like a robust sauce. Set the bowl aside. Cut the tuna into cubes of various bite sizes. Drop these into the sauce and mix well. Keep in the fridge until ready to eat, giving it a stir now and then. It should sit a few hours for the flavors to develop. When ready to eat, make a bed of shredded lettuce. Spoon the tuna cubes into the center and drizzle the sauce over the tuna and lettuce. Sprinkle with the toasted sesame seeds and dig in! E ‘ai kaua! ( That’s “Let’s eat!” in Hawaiian)

Pro Ed’s Looking Forward & the View is Incredible! Pro Ed’s new campus on Jl Bumbak (opposite Bumbak Coffee) opened on 23rd January 2017 with the start of the new school term and it’s looking sensational with a complete make-over in the few short weeks of the Dec/Jan holidays! Phase 1 construction includes a new front office/reception, levelling of soccer pitch, new paved parking area, new decks in Villa 1+2 , modern shade covers from Australia creating cooler areas, a calming new paint job in pastel greens and greys, brand new built-in kitchens and modern IKEA furniture throughout. Their goal has been to create a modern learning environment in which students feel comfortable and calm. With a focus on what’s best for students and with this new campus they can truly offer them a bespoke education experience while meeting their specific learning needs. It’s like the comfort of a modern home, however with a focus on academic goals and achievements. The campus consists of 2 large villas with bucolic views of neighbouring rice fields from upstairs. Gardens complete the picture with a swimming pool, soccer pitch and a very spacious environment for the small number of students who will be enrolled at the centre. The Towards Independence area is a favourite among staff at the campus. Its open-plan design allows for more flow among their special learners and facilitates the practice of key life skills such as food preparation, hospitality and room care, washing, ironing and gardening. There is a simulated bedroom and a large open-plan kitchen where students can put these life skills into practice. Outdoors consists of ample relaxation areas, either in the gardens or under the thatched bales, or next to the trickling fresh water stream adjacent to neighbouring rice fields. Distance and Youth Plus students also enjoy the benefit of more flow through their learning areas with spacious rooms, modern decor, new wall mounted TVs, laptops, and high speed internet.
Phase 2 will include further construction of a purpose-built vocation and training centre along with a multi-media centre. Here students can enjoy the benefits of creative activities the likes of music, dance, graphics, photography and film as well as an introduction to other vocational skills such as surf board shaping or woodwork, depending on the interests of their students. Keeping in line with our modern times, ProEd makes use of EDMODO, the world’s largest K-12 communication and social learning network where teachers, students and parents can communicate safely and securely. With intuitive features and unlimited storage, teachers can quickly and easily create groups, assign homework, manage progress and more. Maintaining everything on one platform, Edmodo is designed to provide complete control over the digital classroom. Parents can download the mobile app, keeping them in the loop of their child’s work and getting the entire family involved. (www. edmodo.com) The campus will only take in up to 40 students at a time to allow for more one-on-one learning and focused attention from teachers, so spaces are limited for this learning centre. There is a growing need for education options which offer students a more customised and supported education pathway. One that includes core subjects like Maths and English, but also allows students to select electives according to their interests as well as providing active learning and key life skills training in the field, preparing students for the world out there. Students at ProEd will benefit from their in-house Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Education Specialist and Counsellor. These services are integrated into each student’s program according to their individual needs.
Raising the Bar for Bali’s Cocktail Scene
Long gone are the days of colourful umbrella clad concoctions where the blue-green hue of Bali Moon was all that indicated the exoticism of your beverage. Bali’s blossoming bar scene is no secret and an influx of well travelled tourists has demanded that venues up the ante in terms of originality, ambience and the calibre of the cocktail. The Lounge at Finns Beach Club on Pantai Berawa is the latest offering from this popular sunset venue and brings a sophisticated level of uber chic to the Bali bar scene. An intoxicating fusion of modern elegance and original island flavours, Finns Lounge Bar
promises to add that extra “Oohh” to your evening. Located on the mezzanine level at Finns Lounge is distanced enough from the pool party below for guests to appreciate an atmosphere of ambient elegance, however they can still be entertained by the view from afar minus the mayhem! Showcasing Bali’s best treasures; sunsets and ingredients unique to the island, the brief is about cocktails spiced with island essence and cool vibes. With the focal point of the venue a giant Balinese stone mortar by the bar, it’s a marriage of
Pro Ed offers a truly unique, bespoke, boutique education option for students who require a more supported learning environment or those who wish to tailor-make their education more according to their interests. They offer full day programs for Youth Plus students age 13-19, Distance Education for those studying online but join in with our other activities, and Towards Independence for those students with more challenging learning needs and who need a life skills based education plan. Keen to check out this amazing new education space for yourself? Mark Saturday 18 February 2017 in your calendars as ProEd will be hosting an exciting Open Day to showcase the new campus, inviting all teachers, principals, parents and families to a fun day. There will be FREE professional development workshops and presentations for teachers and parents, exhibitions, goodie bags, food trucks and much more and Pro Ed is LOOKING FORWARD to showing you around! Contact administrationplus@proed.asia for further information or www.proed.asia
tradition and trend. Visitors are treated to an insight to island history in a scene reminiscent of the way generations of old prepared their food and guests truly get a taste of Bali culture as a mortar and pestle mixologist explains each component of the cocktail to customers as it is prepared in front of them. A nod to the persistent popularity of the deconstructed drink, raw materials are served ‘on the side’ which allows the consumer to relish every element of the concoction. All you have to do is decide which cocktail would be the best accessory to match the shade of the setting sun! The extensive beverage list ensures an array of choices to tantalise every taste from an inclination to exotic mixes (think G&T infused with local star anise and a touch of vanilla…..) to lovers of bubbles and spirit stalwarts who prefer to entertain their guests with a high end beverage by the bottle! Sustenance of a non alcoholic nature is available in the form of culinary cool…..well, more like hot, hot hot! The food menu offers a tapas style, hot stone concept where meaty bites are presented on a sizzling local stone accompanied by a blend of buttery, Balinese sauces and condiments. Open from 4pm to midnight, it’s evenings and adults only. With just seventy seats you’ll need to be ahead of the game to score a sofa and watch the sun go down as it’s first come, first served! Finns Lounge encompasses everything the discerning drinker desires for an evening out. Cue sophistication, sunsets and style, it’s a chance for dress ups, light dining and enjoying some of the edgiest cocktail creations on the island without having to venture out of Canggu. finnsbeachclub.com

Spiritual Journeys Many people are taking ‘vacations with a purpose’. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to sunbathe on a beautiful beach at a tropical island far away from the madding crowd, this too can become a bit passé for the more discerning traveler who is seeking to explore unchartered territories – their authentic Self. With so many Spiritual retreats on offer with the majority focusing on yoga, how can you find the right retreat or training for you? It’s a good idea to spend time contemplating what you’re really desiring to learn or explore during your time away. Are you interested in clearing out the old to make way for a new and better you? Or are you feeling a calling to learn about energy healing, yoga or another mind, body and Spirit system? Some people who join retreats and trainings may be in a major transition in their lives, such as a separation or divorce from a partner or the loss of a loved one. There is a real sense that the life they once thought was safe and secure is now totally crumbling before their eyes. These experiences can be deeply painful and overwhelming, as they crack us open, moving us into a place of total vulnerability. This can be quite frightening for many who are right in the middle of the storm, but the beauty of being totally vulnerable, is that we no longer have our barriers up – in this space we are able to fully awaken and transform ourselves and our lives.
Metric as a Premium Cabinetry System manufacturer strive to create comfortable and attractive interiors for your home by integrating premium design and the best quality material that best suit with your modern lifestyle. When we are in this place of vulnerability, we need someone to hold space and really nurture us so that we feel safe to break down if we need to. If we are in this frame of mind, then a private retreat is much more suitable for us, because we can get the one-on-one attention that we truly desire and require. While a group retreat can also be a wonderful experience, we won’t be able to get the same individualized attention. Here are some questions to consider before choosing a retreat or training that is suitable for you: 1. 2.
Do I want to learn something new that I can use in my life such as Reiki or Yoga? Would I like to focus on my own personal development and healing in a group or individual setting? 3. Does the facilitator who is leading the retreat have any video or written testimonials by past participants that I can check out on his/her website? 4. How skilled is the facilitator? What kind of background and/or training does s/he have? 5. Would I prefer to be in an all woman, all men or mixed retreat or training? 6. Is the location of the retreat or training easy to get to? What will my travel costs be to get there? 7. What are the refund and payment policies? 8. What is included in the price of the retreat or program? 9. Will the facilitator be on site for the whole retreat? *In some cases, the retreat leader doesn’t stay for the whole retreat. 10. What is the minimum and maximum number of participants? C/He/G-18 Jan. 17
When you ask a few questions about the retreat you’re interested in joining, you’ll get more clarity about whether it’s really right for you. In some instances, it’s a good idea to ask the retreat leader or trainer if you can have a short skype call with him/her. This is a great way to find out if you have a good rapport with this person. Sometimes on paper a retreat looks fabulous, but then you meet the retreat leader and you discover that you actually don’t connect with him/her. You can also ask the retreat leader or trainer if s/he can send you a program itinerary so that you can get a clearer idea of the kinds of activities and exercises that will be included in the retreat. For those of you who are more interested in individualized retreat programs, it’s a good idea to find out how much input you can have in creating your own program. Sometimes the retreat leader has a very set program which s/he isn’t willing to deviate far from while other retreat leaders are more flexible and have a large enough repertoire of skills to create a diverse and exciting program for you. Some good websites you can find out about retreats around the world are: www. retreatfinders.com, www.retreatsonline.com, www.musefloweretreat.com and www. healingholidays.co.uk. Giving yourself the gift of a retreat or special training is a wonderful way to nurture you. Many retreat venues have excellent spas so you can add on a few spa treatments during your retreat and really pamper yourself. When you return home from a retreat or training, the rewards are even greater, because you have had much more than just a vacation – you have either learned a new skill or have enriched yourself personally and Spiritually through this experience. When you choose a retreat or training well, you may even change your life.

DOMESTIC VIOLANCE… Trouble in Paradise In Indonesia last year at least 154 women were violently killed, most commonly by their husbands and partners. In the same year more than 316,000 experienced domestic violence.
The problem is the figures are not precise and are very likely to be an underestimate. Indonesia does not have any consistent or official way of documenting cases of a crime so taboo that women rarely even go to the police to report it. In a country like Indonesia, violence against women is more complicated because it is often related to culture. When a case reaches the police, it is considered a domestic matter, and often she is asked to make peace. Are You or Someone You Care About in an Abusive Relationship? Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone, yet the problem is often over looked, excused, or denied. This is especially true when the abuse is psychological, rather than physical. Noticing and acknowledging the signs of an abusive relationship is the first step to ending it. No one should live in fear of the person they love. If you recognize yourself or someone you know in the following warning signs and descriptions of abuse, reach out. There is help available. How should domestic violence and abuse be understood? When people think of domestic abuse, they often focus on domestic violence. But domestic abuse occurs whenever one person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control the other person. Domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only: to gain and maintain total control over you. Domestic violence and abuse do not discriminate. Abuse happens among heterosexual couples and in same-sex partnerships. It occurs within all age ranges, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels. And while women are more commonly victimized, men are also abused - especially verbally and emotionally. Recognizing abuse is the first step to getting help Domestic abuse often escalates from threats and verbal abuse to violence. And while physical injury may be the most obvious danger, the emotional and psychological consequences of domestic abuse are also severe. Emotionally abusive relationships can destroy your selfworth, lead to anxiety and depression, and make you feel helpless and alone. No one should have to endure this kind of pain-and your first step to breaking free is recognizing that your situation is abusive. Physical abuse and domestic violence Physical abuse is the use of physical force against someone in a way that injures or endangers that person. Physical
next steps. If you’re afraid to end the relationship, call a hotline for help.
assault or battering is a crime, whether it occurs inside or outside of the family. Sexual abuse is a form of physical abuse. Any situation in which you are forced to participate in unwanted, unsafe, or degrading sexual activity is sexual abuse. It is still abuse if.. • The incidents of physical abuse seem minor when compared to those you have read about, seen on television, or heard other women talk about. • The incidents of physical abuse have only occurred one or two times in the relationship. Studies indicate that if your spouse/partner has injured you once, it is likely he will continue to physically assault you. • The physical assaults stopped when you became passive and gave up your right to express yourself as you desire, to move about freely and see others, and to make decisions. • There has not been any physical violence. Many women are emotionally and verbally assaulted. Emotional abuse: It’s a bigger problem than you think The aim of emotional abuse is to chip away at your feelings of self-worth and independence. Emotional abuse includes verbal abuse such as yelling, name-calling, blaming, and shaming. Isolation, intimidation, and controlling behavior also fall under emotional abuse. Remember, an abuser’s goal is to control you, and he or she will frequently use money to do so. Below is a list of possible signs of abuse. You may be abused if your partner: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Monitors what you’re doing all the time Unfairly accuses you of being unfaithful all the time Prevents or discourages you from seeing friends or family Prevents or discourages you from going to work or school Gets very angry during and after drinking alcohol or using drugs Controls how you spend your money Controls your use of needed medicines Decides things for you that you should be allowed to decide (like what to wear or eat) Humiliates you in front of others Destroys your property or things that you care about Threatens to hurt you, the children, or pets Hurts you (by hitting, beating, pushing, shoving, punching, slapping, kicking, or biting) Uses (or threatens to use) a weapon against you Forces you to have sex against your will Controls your birth control or insists that you get pregnant Blames you for his or her violent outbursts Threatens to harm himself or herself when upset with you Says things like, “If I can’t have you then no one can.”
If you think someone is abusing you, get help. Abuse can have serious physical and emotional effects. No one has the right to hurt you. Healthy vs. unhealthy relationships Sometimes a relationship might not be abusive, but it might have some serious problems that make it unhealthy. If you think you might be in an unhealthy relationship, you should be able to talk to your partner about your concerns. If you feel like you can’t talk to your partner, try talking to a trusted friend, family member, or counselor. Consider calling a confidential hotline to get the support you need and to explore
Signs of an unhealthy relationship include: • Focusing all your energy on your partner • Dropping friends and family or activities you enjoy • Feeling pressured or controlled a lot • Having more bad times in the relationship than good • Feeling sad or scared when with your partner Signs of a healthy relationship include: • Having more good times in the relationship than bad • Having a life outside the relationship, with your own friends and activities • Making decisions together, with each partner compromising at times • Dealing with conflicts by talking honestly • Feeling comfortable and able to be yourself • Feeling able to take care of yourself • Feeling like your partner supports you Speak up if you suspect domestic violence or abuse If you suspect that someone you know is being abused, speak up! If you’re hesitating-telling yourself that it’s none of your business, you might be wrong, or the person might not want to talk about it-keep in mind that expressing your concern will let the person know that you care and may even save his or her life. Here are some contacts that may be useful in times of abuse. While there are several centers for local women I have been unable to source shelters for expatriates. In this case you should look at websites from your own country in your own language. If you are physically abused, seek medical help. The doctor must write a medical report documenting your injuries. Take photographs of your injuries as evidence. Seriously, Folks We had an interesting chat the other day (no names, no pack-drill) about Bali’s new tourism demographics and their effect on the ¿ve-star-plus hotel sector. Basically, it’s not good news. The emphasis on the low-cost domestic and Chinese markets is bringing in lots more people and is, from time to time, ¿lling up the Rp35-Rp500K a night hotels, as well as clogging up the road system. And that’s ¿ne as a policy setting (well except for the strain on the road infrastructure) if pursuit of raw numbers is the name of the game. But that’s a double-edged sword. The downside is that these pressures are forcing higher quality hotels and resorts to lower their prices. You’d have to be a Trump supporter to accept that argument without pausing to think. If it continues unabated or is enhanced further, as some propose, it will ultimately make quality resorts wholly uneconomic instead of only marginally so. This in turn will speed up Bali’s descent into the mass market, low-cost, culturally unaware, sector. So much for Bali’s special magic then: it will disappear into a morass of cheapeats-and-trinkets-style offerings.
Suckling Imlek, Anyone? You have to dig deep for a laugh these days. So it was fun to read that the Pork Festival in Semarang, Central Java, had been renamed the Imlek festival so as to avoid mentioning babi, a food that is haram. We do hope no followers of the Prophet were taken in by this exquisite renaming and because of this tried to order Imlek guling. The festival took place from Jan. 23-29, right over the Lunar New Year, on Jan. 28. It’s now the year of the Fire Rooster, which might explain why everyone was running around like chooks with their tail feathers ablaze. The incident caused us to recall that lovely little pop song from 1963, sung by the Ronettes. We’ve amended it for the good halal burghers of Semarang. The sing-along bit goes like this: So won’t you, please, be my be my babi Be my little babi, my one and only babi Say you’ll be my darlin’, be my be my babi Be my babi now, my one and only babi Wha-oh-oh-oh. It could catch on.
Snowball’s Chance Regular readers will remember that The Diary is a Monkey. We’re very glad our once in a dozen years turn around the dance Àoor is over. But all is still not well at The Cage. The Distaff is a Rooster. Moreover, she’s a Fire Rooster. We’ve had our share of challenging moments over the past twelve months and must now look forward to back-to-back mazurkas. Of course, it could all go swimmingly well. They do say hope springs eternal. But as someone who lives in the optimist-pessimist convergence zone, we think we’ll see some bumps in the road. And we’re not just talking about the worsening state of the goat-track access to our little rumah pribadi.

HECTOR’S out the disease is the public duty they’ve managed to evade for nine years, despite help from the national government, local animal welfare charities, foreign governments and the United Nations. Two months ago Governor Made Mangku Pastika visited Kumamoto, a prefecture (district) of around 1.8 million people that neighbours the slightly larger Fukuoka in Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s home islands. Last month a team from Kumamoto visited Bali. Kumamotu has successfully controlled rabies in cats – the disease vector there – through humane population control and properly managed vaccination programs. The Bali plan involves Kumamotu University, which has an alumni program in Indonesia, and the Kumamotu Indonesia Friendship Association (KIFA). That connection is facilitated through PT Karang Mas Sejathara, one of the operating arms of the Jakarta based corporation MidPlaza, owned by Rudy Suliawan whose wife Yoko is from Kumamotu. Its Bali enterprises include the Ayana and Rimba resort hotels on the Bukit.
C/He/I-01 Feb 17
A leading veterinarian who owns the Ryunosuke Animal Hospital in Kumamoto (Dr. Tokuda) was at the Jan. 19 meeting in Bali and said of the successful program in Kumamotu: “Everyone worked hard so we could vaccinate and sterilize 1800 cats each week, allowing us to ¿nish our work in two years. I am convinced that Bali could do the same.” Well, so it could. It just needs to work at it.
Happy Endings No, it’s not what you think, at all. Shame on you! Though it’s possibly true that Mellors might have had a mind to advise Her Ladyship that “there’s nowt beats a bit of nooky” if that coarse word of later Australian popular origin had been in common usage in the Old Dart in Lady Chatterley’s more plainly Anglo-Saxon days. Those to which we refer in this instance are offered in the desserts section of the menu at a new Canggu eatery recently made the subject of comment in the Yak magazine’s on line MinYak. Our favourite Dorset Girl, Sophie Digby, suggested we should try it; and we said, yes, we would, incognito as always. MyWarung Canggu – which has a sister operation at Echo Beach – is the brainchild of Juan-Pierre Anthony, a native Indonesian from Tanjung Benoa who has spent most of his adult life globetrotting, and French-Canadian chef Hugo Coudurier. We’ve looked at the menu, courtesy of Sophie the Yakker, and it’s certainly both tasty and affordable. We told her we’d look at the Happy Endings. No tarts are on the menu, but there’s an apple crumble that could quite easily turn our head. You can look it up on line at mywarung.com.
Another Round It will not have escaped anyone’s notice that rabies has been endemic in Bali since 2008, when the killer disease broke out on the Bukit and wasn’t noticed soon enough to stop it spreading island-wide. Rabid dogs have recently bitten people at Sukawati in Gianyar regency and at Kediri in Tabanan. The Bali authorities have now accepted a proposal from Japan to help with rabies eradication. Wiping

The Frugal Balinist *Health/safety tips.
Smokers are two times more likely to die from a bursting blood vessel. *Small bottles of Soffell (Rp14,000/100 ml) and Autan Refresh (Rp12,000/100 ml) are cheap and effective anti-mosquito (anti nyamuk) lotions and sprays. *So you don’t suffer horrific face injuries in an accident, use a sturdy helmet that wraps around your jaw and mouth with only your eyes showing – called a helm tropong - when renting a motorbike. *In Bali, honking/beeping your car or skooter simply means “I’m here!” as you overtake a vehicle or approach a busy intersection. *Young coconut water (air kelapa muda) makes an excellent rehydration liquid (pengganti ion tubuh) and was even used to replace the lost blood of soldiers in the Vietnam War when plasma was unavailable.

Five All Time Great Indonesian Love Songs (lagu cinta) available for free enjoyment on You Tube: Mungkinkah (Maybe) by Stinky; Untukmu Segalanya (Only For You) by Novia Kolopaking; Angin Malam (Night Breeze) by Broery Marantika; Selamat Tinggal (Goodbye) by Katon Bagaskara; Nyalakan Api Kehidupan (Light the Fire of Love) by Nike Ardilla.
*Money tips. *Savings can be made on fees by using ATM machines that dispense Rp100,000 notes (maximum Rp2.5 juta per withdrawal up to your limit) rather than using ATMs that dispense Rp50,000 notes (maximum Rp1,250,000 per withdrawal up to your limit). *Datang, duduk, dengar, diam, duit are the five Ds of being shaken down for a bribe by Indonesian officials: come, sit, listen, be quiet, money. *Chase and several American Express credit cards now offer some incredibly generous sign-up bonuses, including 100,000-point offers that can be worth as much as US$2,000 when redeemed directly for travel. *If you buy a used car and want to change the title into your name, don’t let anybody borrow your car’s title (the BPKB book) because they could use it get a bank or koperasi (group credit unit) loan. *No business is better than bad business.
*Travel tips. Indonesia.travel is the official website of Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry. *Pahala Kencana is the best long distance bus company to take from Bali to Bandung and Intercontinental from Bali to Jakarta. *Get free book “50 Travel Apps to Save you Time and Money” from http://double-barrelledtravel.com. * Use Singapore Airlines miles to book awards on other Star Alliance airlines (including United) while at the same time benefiting from Singapore’s more generous fee policies. Changing an award ticket booked with United miles could cost you a whopping $125, but if redeemed through Singapore Airlines, changing that same award ticket would cost you only $20. *Bargain electronic outlets. Bumi Mas in Tabanan and Jati Jaya in Kediri (both on Jl. Bypass on the road to Gilimanuk) are far cheaper than counterparts in the Denpasar area because they are supplied directly by trucks from Java. For example, a Philips blender costs only Rp500,000 at Bumi Mas but Rp1 juta at Ace and Rp600,000 at Dapur Prima (though Dapur Prima has a more complete range from standard to high quality). At that price, if it breaks after six months of commercial use just buy a new one! Most brands – Philips, Miyako, Cosmos, Maspion – give guarantees of one year, which seems to magically be the exact amount of time they last. *Food tips.
Fried chicken skin (krupuk kulit ayam), pig skin (krupuk babi), fried eel crisps (kripik belut or lindung) are favorite Balinese snacks. *Eels sold live in markets around Bali are killed just before cooking. Live eels are put in a plastic bag to carry home wriggling all the way. Eel skin is so hard to remove that some people pull it off with pliers. *Ordering the house nasi campur is the easiest and fastest way to take the true measure of a restaurant on Bali, to find out what they are truly capable of. If they can do a good nasi campur, most everything else on the menu will probably be of high quality. *If you eat too many carrots, you’ll turn orange. *Website www./budaya-indonesia.org/q/?q=recipe has 1,458 food and beverage recipes from all over the archipelago. *Since strawberries cost only Rp25,000/kg (have your driver do the bargaining) in the Candikuning area of Bedugul, it makes more and more sense to make your own strawberry jam.
*Keep it alive. We have owned our Toyota Kijang for 14 years and have become wise in the ways to keep it going. Bengkel mobil means a general auto repair shop, but we take ours to special bengkel when certain parts go. These various dinamo rebuild motors at a fraction of the cost of a new ones purchased from official Toyota dealerships. Original parts are often more expensive than the labor costs of a car mechanic. In an Indonesian-English dictionary, dinamo means generator, but actually the word applies to any motor: Dinamo Setater (starter motor), Dinamo Amper (amperage meter), Dinamo Kipas (air-conditioner). A Bengkel Tyrod specializes in parts under the car such as tie rods, steering gear, shock absorbers, brakes, wheels, etc. Just look for the sign “DINAMO” where you’ll find a tukang dinamo (car parts technician). They don’t work on automobiles per se, just automobile motors. Prices range from as low as Rp75,000 up to Rp375,000, depending the type of part and how much work it needs. For a fair price, have your bengkel mechanic take the malfunctioning motor to the tukang dinamo, not you.

*Tech tips. Best data paket is Smartfren for Rp100,000 for 25 GB; Telkom costs Rp500,000 for 17 GB. *Indovision offers a fast Internet package for only Rp220,000 for 20 GB; once you use up this allotment, access to the Internet is free but the speed drops perceptibly. *If you don’t have the heart to carry a luxury phone on your motorbike, Xiaomi Mi4i is a highly affordable Android phone. *A paid-for VPN service popular in Bali is IPVanish (AUD$100/year) that offers anonymous torrenting, user-friendly apps, 40,000+ shared IPS, 700+ VPN servers in 60+ countries, connects to 5 devices simultaneously, no restrictions on P2P downloads, zero traffic logs, etc. *Last pass (https://lastpass. com/generate) is a neat and secure website for safe password generation.
*Heads Up. Bali’s highest crime areas are Denpasar and south Badung (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, etc.) and the lowest crime area is Klungkung. To avoid possibly violent disturbances in the bars and night clubs of southern Bali, patronize places that employ professionally trained and licensed security guards (satpam) rather than those hiring thugs (preman) or gang members of (ormas) to keep order.
*My Warung bargains. At Rp150,000 ++ for the L’entrecôte steak the most-expensive item on a very affordable menu of “mains” priced at around Rp50,000 each – and a bottle of cold Bintang for only Rp22,000 - the meals at the two outlets of My Warung at Jl. Subak Sari 80 (near Canggu Club) in Canggu and at Jl. Batu Mejan 78 in Echo Beach are certainly among the best value deals on the whole island. *Cool wheels. Everyone raves about Yamaha’s Nmax motorcycle which not only has great aesthetics, impressive power (even with a passenger), nice handling, traction, cornering, but also wins hands down as the smoothest and loveliest to ride compared with most other available bikes. Ride for hours without frozen butt syndrome or any other comfort issues. Gas mileage also very decent. The bike’s ABS (anti-lock braking system) comes in handy as an added safety feature. The rate of crashes is 20% lower and fatal crashes 31% lower for motorcycles equipped with optional ABS than for those same models without ABS. To cap it off, the Nmax costs Rp26 juta non ABS (Rp29 juta for the ABS model) compared to the Honda PCX which is around Rp42 juta.

Desserts with a Twist From hole-in-the-wall bakeries to elegant restaurants that serve Michelin star-worthy desserts, Bali can deliver just about any sweet treat under the sun. Below are some of the island’s cafes and restaurants that offer more unusual takes on well-known and well-loved sugary delicacies.
Alchemy Who hasn’t dreamt of guilt-free chocolate, healthy cakes and nutritious ice cream? In today’s world of sugar laden and fluro-colored confection, we have become used to thinking of desserts as unhealthy. One Bali restaurant is proving that it is possible to indulge in a mouth-watering dessert without compromising a healthy lifestyle.
Revayah Coffee While Revayah offers a large variety of coffees and freshly baked cakes, what really makes it stand out among other Bali cafes are freakshakes. For those not familiar with the term, freakshakes are supersized milkshakes topped with all sorts of high-calorie goodies, such as donuts, chocolate bars, marshmallows and even whole slices of cake. Originating at a Canberra café in Australia, freakshakes are currently taking the world by storm, from Singapore and Mumbai to the United Kingdom.
The range of sweet treats on the menu is absolutely huge, with 15 flavors of macarons, 10 flavors of cupcakes, 10 flavors of mille crepes, and more than 20 choices of cake including classics such as black forest cake and tiramisu. “Besides regular flavors such as fruit, coffee and vanilla, we offer other more unusual ones including babi guling [suckling pig], salted egg yolk and spicy fried meatballs,” says Jessica. “We constantly update our dessert menu, with some of the latest additions including sweet pizzas, with flavors such as red velvet, and banana and nutella, Korean shaved ice, as well as klepon [rice cakes stuffed with liquid palm sugar].” Jessica says that Lé Sica is about “love at first sight.” While the desserts taste great, it is the appearance that customers notice first. “Our customers usually take photos of what arrives at their table from every possible angle before they try it.” Lé Sica’s upstairs restaurant section, Kartel, features an outdoor events area. Musos take to the stage each Wednesday, Saturday and Friday. Jalan Teuku Umar No. 35 X, Denpasar Tel: (0361) 239767 (no website)
Biku
Alchemy – which proclaims itself as Bali’s first 100 percent raw and vegan café, holistic clinic and organic health food store – dishes up dessert that are not only vegan, but also free from gluten, dairy and processed sugar. Raw food is made from produce that has not been heated above 106 degrees Fahrenheit. “Our desserts are made with high quality unprocessed, raw and vegan ingredients. We make everything from scratch to ensure that there are no unwanted additives. We use only natural ingredients such as cacao, palm nectar, shredded coconut, nuts, seeds, fruits, berries and nutrient dense superfoods,” says Verena Kosasih, Alchemy’s Senior Marketing Communications Manager.
Luckily for those with a sweet tooth, Bali now has its own freakshake outlet in the form of Revayah, which serves 24 types of sweet concoctions (excluding coffee). The family-run café, which opened last year, delivers a taste and appearancedriven menu of sugary drink-desserts. “Freakshakes are very new to the Bali market. People enjoy them not just due to the taste, but also due to their appealing appearance. The abundant messy toppings act like a magnet when it comes to our customers,” says July Sari Dewi, the café’s proprietor. “We have upgraded simple milk bar-style cups and frothy milk to drool-worthy centerpieces. The massive, colorful shakes are definitely photo-worthy so don’t forget your camera.”
Biku’s classic desserts come as a part of its high tea extravaganza, with the setting and indulgent treats adding up to a very unique experience. Housed in a 150-year-old joglo (traditional teak house), Biku delivers a number of different types of high teas in a homey British tearoom atmosphere. From Traditional to Asian to Children’s High Tea to a Sparkling Afternoon Tea version that comes with a glass of bubbly, there is a high tea here to suit any age and taste.
The overflowing freakshakes come in variety of flavors such as nutella, vanilla and mocha. The café also offers monthly flavors depending on the available products and produce. In the past, these have included green tea freakshakes and the Thai tea freakshakes. “We really want to ‘wow’ our customers so it is crucial that we use the right ingredients that both taste great and are striking to look at.”
D j part off the h ritual i l – these h h d Desserts are a major are homemade, wholesome and include versions of beloved classics. Biku’s owner Asri Kerthyasa says that the aim behind the desserts is to take customers down a memory lane. “The desserts remind our customers of their childhood favorites. Many of our recipes have been handed down from my mother and grandmother and are ones that I make for my own children.” Scones with jam and cream and mini cakes are just some of the treats that feature high on Biku’s high tea agenda. The restaurant currently serves five different flavors of raw chocolate truffles and several flavors of ice cream. There is also a selection of cakes, cookies, brownies and bars. Some of the highlights on the menu include lemon coconut cheesecake, a cashew coconut cheesecake with zesty lemon flavor; black forest cake, chocolate cheesecake with vanilla marinated cherries and magic mint; and magic mint, a cheesecake that merges mint and chocolate swirls. Verena says that Alchemy’s most unique dessert is its milk chocolate, which is sweet and creamy without containing any dairy. “We use coconut butter to make the chocolate mild in flavor. This appeals to many people who don’t like dark and bitter chocolate. The chocolate is made with raw cacao from Big Tree Farms, a superfood full of antioxidants, magnesium, vitamin C and anandamide, also known as the ‘bliss chemical,’ which raises serotonin levels, and makes people blissful and happy.” While it can be difficult to imagine that Alchemy’s rich and scrumptious desserts are actually healthy, Verena is quick to point out the philosophy that makes Alchemy’s food so special. “Junk food is junk, no matter how many calories it contains. Reducing calories from food doesn’t necessarily make it any better for you,” she says. “Instead, pay close attention to whether the food you eat is real or not. So forget about calorie counting and eat unadulturated and natural food with life force.” http://alchemybali.com
Those wishing to focus their energy solely on a dessert might wish to check out Biku’s a la carte menu. Some of the highlights on offer include raspberry and strawberry trifle, and pavlova. “The pavlova is our most popular dessert. While most Australians and New Zealanders are familiar with it, I find that it comes as a surprise to many others. Still, they usually instantly fall in love with the dessert’s taste and texture,” says Asri, adding that Biku’s menu also has a children’s dessert corner. Those not quite ready to venture down the freakshake alley can sample Revayah’s other toothsome treats including mille crepe cakes and gelato.
The Biku complex also features a small store, reading area, as well as Tarot readings offered to customers on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at an extra cost.
Jalan Gatot Subroto Timur 99 A, Denpasar Tel: (0361) 461173 (no website)
While Biku focuses on classic Western desserts, Asri says that she hopes that the abundance of unusual and tropical produce in Bali will end up enhancing the island’s dessert scene. “I hope that the island’s dessert scene will gradually develop into something unique – a special Bali flavor.”
Lé Sica As cute as a rainbow cake, Lé Sica is a Parisian-style, chic café that serves a large variety of desserts as well as Balinese fare. With floral motifs and pastel colors throughout this is definitely not just another Bali bakery. While the décor is geared towards women, Jessica Albert Salim, Lé Sica’s proprietor, says that men constitute a large percentage of the café’s patrons. “The first thing that our customers notice is the décor. This, of course, is closely followed by our colorful desserts,” she says. “Since most dessert lovers are women, they immediately love Lé Sica. However, not wanting to miss out, men are usually right there with them.”

MONTH OF LOVE
It’s February, which many call the month of love and romance. And once again, Bridges Restaurant is stretching our heart strings and making it next to impossible to get out of doing some little spontaneous something, to woo our favourite belle or beau. For Valentine’s Day itself, we’re the only town in Bali with a “Love Tree” it’s just next to the old bridge itself - where you can renew your vows or even pop the question, and seal the pledge by hanging your engraved Love Lock on the tree. To complement the romantic atmosphere created by scented candles, floral decorations, picturesque scenery and romantic music, Bridge’s chefs have also designed a special Romance Tasting Menu, romantic bar treats, and cocktails with names like Love Potion, Vanilla Passion and Cinderella’s Shoe. This is not just for Valentine’s Day - where bookings are already crazy - but the whole month. So get moving m’lovelies; it’s time to ask someone on a special date. Four-course “romance tasting menus”; 450,000rp and 350,000rp (nego).
INDIAN COOKING CLASS
For sure, take advantage of one of Ubud’s excellent Indonesian cooking classes (hands-on at Paon Cooking School, or “watch and learn” with Janet deNeefe), but hey, there’s also the opportunity to learn authentic Punjabi (North Indian) style homecooking while you are here.
Warung Little India in Jalan Sukma in Tebesaya serves light, fresh, healthy food, not the typically heavy, oily Indian fare sometimes served in Indonesia’s Indian restaurants. The half day classes are customised to the group; with up to 3 or 4 dishes selected - by you - from the menu. There are many classic vegetarian, vegan, and non-vegetarian selections. Prices: 500,000rp each for 1-3 people, and 400,000rp each for 4-6 persons. Call 0819 9962-4555 to make a booking.
OZ INDO AWARDS FINALISTS
Congratulations to Ochie, cofounder of Ubud’s Cinta Bahasa Indonesian Language School, who is one of the finalists for the Tourism/Travel category of the Australia Indonesia Association’s 2017 awards.
With Indonesia as Australia’s closest northern neighbour, it’s vital that the two countries can communicate, whether we’re on good terms, as now, and I guess even more impor-tant when we’re not! Cinta Bahasa is one of the innovative new language schools and so plays a vital role in that, chosen by many Australian citizens, government staff and university students for their studies. Yoshida “Ochie” Chandra travels across Australia to meet teachers in public schools, private schools and universities, contributes to both the Australia Indonesia Youth Association (AIYA) and Causindy, the Conference of Australian and Indonesian Youth, and is very committed to building a strong relationship between the two countries. The Awards will be announced in early March in Sydney.
NEXT GOOGLE AND SINGAPORE
And in early February Shervin is off to Google-land, or actually Singapore, where Google Corp has invited him to share a sound healing demonstration at their offices, in one of their “Talks at Google” sessions. Singapore is very keen to learn from what our sound healers are doing, and he’ll be offering sound medicine and private Tama-Do vibrational sound acupuncture sessions at SouthEast Active, a new Singapore holistic centre and yoga studio, as well as collaborating with yoga and meditation instructors, Yizhao Zhang and Jacqueline Wong at other venues including LuLu Lemon and Space Mob.

BALI REFUGEE SUPPORT GROUP More than a hundred asylum seekers and refugees, including 23 children, are in detention in Bali, and a group of Bali expats are making an enormous difference to their well-being with regular visits. There are 106 people in the Rumah Detensi Imigrasi centre in Denpasar, four of whom are not asylum seekers or refugees. The majority are from Afghanistan, with other groups from Sri Lanka, Somalia, Myanmar, Iran, Pakistan and Ethiopia. Of these, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has already assessed 41 of these as refugees; most are still waiting for assessment, with some now confined to the centre for well over two years. Every individual and family has a different story. I met one woman, a microbiologist, who was a middle-class mother one week, and fleeing for her life with her family the next, because someone falsely accused her husband to the Iranian authorities. She only came to Indonesia because it was one of the few countries that they could get flights to quickly, be-fore her husband was snatched away, put into detention and “disappeared”. The refugees really appreciate people visiting and the authorities don’t object. But don’t just plunge in; check through the steps recommended by Bali Refugee Support Group (Facebook) to find out who to visit, and to make sure that your visit runs smoothly.

OUTER PRACTICE OF BATIK Internationally renowned textile gallery Threads of Life host a stunning batik workshop this week — it’s an opportunity to study both the practical creative process and the indigenous wisdom of Java’s batik tradition that stands behind it. Tradition keepers Agus Ismoyo and Nia Fliam will explore the knowledge and practice of natural dye batik as two interlinking themes. While putting wax on cloth in a series of exercises, participants will also begin a personal creative journey that cultivates what the Java-nese call “rasa”, the intuitive sensitivity. Tribawana: the Inner Journey and Outer Practice of Batik and Natural Dyes with Agus Is-moyo, Nia Fliam and Threads of Life, is being held at the Threads of Life natural dye studio and botanical garden in Umajati Retreat. SOUND HEALS WATER This year is already humming along, resonating, moving harmoniously… hmm, what’s the right word? Anyway, we got off to an excellent start, with Shervin Boloorian honouring the directions and leading the Sound Healing Bali team to present sacred chants, a sound healing session, and prayer songs from different world indigenous traditions, as part of Ubud’s traditional New Year fundraiser. This year the New Year fundraiser, led by our favourite Bali-supporting Indi musician MICHAEL FRANTI and Friends, chose to focus on the Bali Water Protection Program, replenishing wells in Bali’s most arid regions where aquifers are depleted or contaminated by salt water. According to water management watchdogs at IDEP, Bali’s fresh water is 60% lower than levels recorded 20 years ago due to rampant tourism and climate change. Visit www. idepfoundation.org/en/bwp to join the water protection campaign or make a donation.

Art Over Wheels Workshop (7 – 16 February) It seems that in this edition of Schedule the theme is the environment. Art over wheels stands for Bamboo Bike Building, a workshop which will be led by Brazilian born Klaus Volkmann. The Green School will host the bike building workshop which comes as no surprise as The Green School is synonymous with all things pertaining to the environment. EWABI is the company that is responsible for building electric bicycles from bamboo. Furthermore, they are a local company dedicated to lowering both the environmental impact of transportation and the cost of community mobility. This is good news as the traffic in recent years has increased beyond capacity with highway traffic numbers on village roads. The pollution as well has increased dramatically the only respite being Nyepi or so it seems. The workshop will be held over ten days with participants gaining hands-on experience learning how to make a bamboo bike frame from start to finish. Bamboo forks, handlebars and spokes will also be created. Teams of four will work together and the winner of the lucky draw will take home a completed bamboo bike frame. Klaus Volkmann will available to offer expertise and support. Meals and accommodation is additional at a reasonable cost. It is great to see a company taking the initiative to offer an alternative form of transport that is visionary but a reality. Do take a look at the company website at the designs as they are impressive.

A Starling Night (10 February) The great white shark, pandas, rhinos and polar bears are just some of the animals that are facing extinction across the planet. The Bali starlings are no exception. Unique to Bali, it is the national bird of Bali, mostly white with a patch of blue skin around each eye. The Bali starling is endemic to Bali yet endangered. The Begawan Foundation has recognized the need to support the survival of the Bali starling and has organized a fundraiser with their education awareness classes in the Sibang area for its Ambassador’s Club. The principal is ‘learning by doing’ and students are encouraged to think carefully about the natural conservation of the Bali Starling. Students have created nest boxes and cotton bags to replace plastic bags. Based on the Bali Starling, students have worked hard on their artwork that will be sold to raise money for the Begawan Foundation and ultimately to help protect Bali’s most endangered bird. Do call ahead to book your place and come along and support this worthy cause as it is free but an RSVP is compulsory as places are limited. Too many species are on the verge of extinction and it is important that we as a community help to protect the animals of the world.

World Ocean Summit (22 - 24 February) This is the fourth summit of its kind supported by the Economist magazine. It is great to see a global summit being hosted here in Bali which is not excluded from its own issues of ocean pollution. Google any website and the issues oceans are facing are highly disturbing. Overfishing, dying reefs, growing dead zones that do not support life, ocean acidification, pollution and in particular mercury, demand for shark fins and the pacific garbage patch about the size of the state of Texas that can be seen from space are part of a horrific list of issues that threaten ocean life and humanity. The goal of the summit is to “bring a critical eye to the vital issue on how to finance a sustainable ocean economy.” The key discussion will be how to mobilize capital to encourage sustainable investment. A sustainable economy should open new economic and investment opportunities while at the same time ensure that the oceans are protected and preserved. Hopefully the powers that be at the summit can agree on strategies and deals that will preserve the oceans while at the same time ensure that they are managed efficiently to prevent further damage, pollution and over fishing. There are some great speakers with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in this field. This is a corporate event and fees and other information can be found at the website below. It is worth a mention as Bali is hosting this global event now in its fourth year. COULD YOUR CAT HAVE ASTHMA? It is quite common for cats to present at Sunset Vet with a chronic cough or wheeze. The problem may be constant or just recur from time to time, and can range from mild to severe. Clinically the disease may resemble human asthma, but the term feline asthma can be misleading, as there are a number of different possible causes. Here we look at what those underlying causes can be, and the different forms of treatment available to affected cats. Cats usually present with one or all the following signs: 1. Coughing 2. Wheezing 3. Difficulty breathing A minority of cases will have the classic human status asthmaticus, rapid onset breathing difficulty due to severe narrowing of the bronchi. Cats tend to be middle aged or older, and Siamese cats may be more prone than other breeds. The Pathology Little is known about the underlying causes or exacerbating factors in feline asthma. There may be an element of genetic predisposition. While chronic inhalation of airway irritants, such as smoking, has been shown to cause bronchitis in humans, this has not been studied in detail in cats. Likewise, allergens such as pollen, housedust mites, dander, fungal spores, dust and cat litter could all be implicated theoretically, as could inhalation of fumes from the fogging of mosquitoes. The Possible Diagnoses There are a large number of possible diagnoses when a cat first presents with coughing or breathing difficulty. Here are some of the more important ones: 1. Pulmonary edema. Often due to severe heart disease. 2. Infectious bronchitis. This can be due to bacteria, viruses or parasites. 3. Pleural disease. Filling of the space between the lung and the chest wall with air or an effusion. 4. Cancer. This can be a primary lung tumor or metastatic spread. 5. Potassium bromide induced respiratory disease. A side effect from an anti-epileptic drug. 6. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Responds poorly to treatment. 7. Pulmonary thromboembolus. Lodging of a clot in a respiratory blood vessel causing sudden onset breathing difficulty. 8. Pulmonary hypertension. Usually secondary to other heart or respiratory disease. Diagnosis 1. Clinical examination The first step in the diagnostic protocol is a thorough clinical examination by a veterinarian. This should localize the origin of the disease to the upper airways, lower airways or pleural space. If the cat is found to have pleural disease, a needle may be inserted straight away to remove either air or a sample of the effusion for both diagnosis and short term treatment of the respiratory distress. 2. Radiography The next test performed is usually thoracic radiography. This is best performed under general anesthetic so there is less chance for motion blur, though in acute situations this is not possible. This is where the most meaningful information can be gained. Usually your vet will take 3 Xrays – left and right lateral views plus one dorsoventral view.
3. Bronchoscopy Bronchoscopy allows visualization of the larger airways, and assessment for increased mucus and inflammation. 4. Tracheal Wash This involves injecting a small amount of saline into the trachea and immediately withdrawing it, and then examining the cells and debris harvested under a microscope. 5. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) This is similar to the technique described above, but the catheter is inserted all the way into a lower airway before the saline is injected and withdrawn. This is therefore a good test for lower airway disease, and also useful when ruling out lungworm.

6. Lung biopsy This is an invasive procedure that carries a significant risk to the patient. It is only indicated where diffuse cancer or extensive fibrosis is suspected, or in severe disease that responds poorly to treatment. Treatment The aims of treatment are as follows. 1. Eliminate any suspected infectious agents. This may be a sufficiently long course of antibiotics if bacterial infection is suspected, or a wormer such as fenbendazole if lungworm is suspected. 2. Remove or avoid airway irritants. The most obvious one is ensuring the cat has no contact with cigarette smoke, and purchasing dust free cat litter. 3. Removal or avoidance of potential allergens. House dust mite allergy must be excluded by spraying the house with an insecticidal product. 4. Chronic therapy for the underlying condition. For long-term treatment of cats with feline asthma, a combination of steroids and bronchodilators are a popular choice. Steroids reduce the inflammation and lower mucus production, and can limit long-term consequences such as fibrosis. Bronchodilators are most useful when there is airway spasm. Traditionally, medication has been given orally via tablets, but over the last few years, metered dose inhalers such as the ones used for human asthma have come on the market. Aerosol therapy has the advantage that the maximum concentration of drug is delivered to the target site. This means that lower overall doses can be used, and the cat is less likely to suffer the negative side effects of steroids. Various inhalers can be used in both cats and dogs, but they tend to be designed for humans. As a result, higher doses are given compared with human medicine, as humans can be instructed to breathe deeply whereas cats will breathe normally at best. Spacer devices A spacer device consists of a chamber into which the aerosol drug is released at one end, with a mask at the other end which fits snugly over the cats mouth and nose. Human baby spacer devices (e.g. Babyhaler) can be easily adapted for cats. Alternatively, veterinary spacers specifically designed for cats are now on the market (e.g. Aerokat). Is treatment life-long? Generally yes. Doses can often be reduced gradually once clinical remission has been achieved. As with many chronic conditions, complete control might not always be possible and an acceptable quality of life is the main aim of the treatment.

Ramen Boy is small, air-con and open late [till 1.00 a.m.]. It is the ideal stopping spot on Sunset Road [traveling north between Jlns. Mertanadi and Kunti] and very popular with those who find themselves hungry on the way home after an evening at one of the local dance clubs. It is adjacent to Ryoshi’s Sakanaya [wet and cooked seafood]. They offer many Ramen dishes. Ramen are Chinese style wheat noodles served in a broth with a variety of toppings. All are very budgetpriced [less than Rp. 60,000], filling and tasty. On offer here the Ramen can be; Mabo [spiced tofu and minced meat], Shoyu [special broth with slices of confit pork and boiled egg], Negi [spring onion], Kakuni [kyrobuta pork belly], Tom Yum [prawns added in a Thai sour and spicy broth], Miso [in that broth made from fermented soy beans] and the classic Miso Chasiu [miso with extra pork confit]. Open from 9.00 a.m. every day Ramen Boy is also a good stop for a quick snack, brunch or lunch. For me that means having a plate of those Chinese-Japanese dumplings Gyoza, stuffed with minced pork. They are first steamed then pan-fried on one side just before serving [pictured]. Similar, but different, are the Cuikiaw [Taiwanese version], also stuffed with minced pork and these can be ordered steamed or deep-fried, Potato Strips [actually curling scoops] are also a popular snack, particularly when accompanying a beer. Yonne is the hotel restaurant name at Sens, Jl. Tebasaya, Ubud. The small intimate restaurant
is a surprisingly pleasant space, overlooking the landscaped indoor/outdoor swimming pool. Whilst it has no option other than to offer an all day international menu for its hotel guests, it also has a small well balanced Chinese one as well [just for lunch and dinner]. Traditional Cantonese dishes from Hong Kong Executive Chef, Hui Chung Piu. An interesting starter is a 3 in 1 platter of Jellyfish Salad, Char Siu Chicken and Vegetarian Spring Roll. Soup is a fish broth with Chinese almonds, apple and red dates. Popular stir fries are Kung Pao Chicken and Szechuan Prawn. Then there is Beef Brisket, stir-fried with broccoli and oyster sauce.
Cafe d’ dapoer is street-front at the Oasis Hotel, Jln. Danau Tamblingan, in Sanur [next
door to Hardy’s]. The concentration is on classic traditional Indonesian food with just a few tourist specials [Fish & Chips, Bitterballen etc]. The setting is very attractive and whilst you expect higher than average prices to be charged the opposite is actually the case. Amazingly for an Indonesian owned and managed operation, all the prices are also inclusive of tax and service charges, so what you see is what you get [a common gripe from Australian tourists, particularly those who are first time overseas travelers, as in that country the price on the menu, by law, must be the final one]. Many of the dishes here are from old family recipes and some actually bear the name of that particular ancestor. Mie Goreng Oma is fried noodles but with grilled king prawns added, along with shredded chicken, beef sausage, egg and even a sate lilit on top. Mie Godog si Jantek is a noodle soup with shredded chicken and prawn. Their Ayam Goreng uses chicken that has been marinated before herb crusting and then deep fried till crisp. It is served with uduk rice, soy bean cake and tofu. The Beef Rendang uses tenderloin with young jackfruit, cassava leaf and green chillis. A Balinese special is the Udang Bakar, prawns stir-fried with sambal matah. For the vegetarians Tahu is tofu that has been stuffed with bean sprouts, carrots and onion, before deep-frying, served with Thai style sweet chilli sauce.

Bali Nikmat was the first to open on the stretch of road where Raya Kuta becomes Iman Bonjol [between Bali Bakery and Sunset Road]. Its immediate success, 20 years ago, as one of Bali’s leading Chinese seafood restaurants has seen many other similar establishments open nearby. However as is often the case, the original is the best. Very Cantonese, many different species of live fish and shellfish are served live from the water tanks that line the walls in true Chinese style. Soft Shell Crab with salted egg yolk is just about their most popular dish but there are so many others; spicy clams, steamed prawns, squid with garlic and chilli. But when ordering fish have it steamed the traditional Cantonese way [not the Indonesian way of always grilling], with steaming the flesh remains soft and moist [you can actually taste the fish], and ask for the accompanying sauce to be served on the side. For me that is the only way to enjoy fresh fish. Why some prefer it dry, burnt and tasteless I will never know. Valentines Day in 2017, falls on Tuesday February 14th. At Last…a Steakhouse! BC Steakhouse is just that! Hundreds of Bali restaurants, of varied cuisines, offer a steak on their menu. I have been asked on numerous occasions if Bali has a dedicated steakhouse? For a short time we did, back when Raymond Saja was cooking at Karma Jimbaran. BC Steakhouse does not just serve ordinary steaks. They import quality Angus carcasses from Australia, butcher them locally and then dry-age them on site. What is dry ageing? The process changes beef by two means. Firstly, moisture is evaporated from the muscle. The resulting process of desiccation creates a greater concentration of beef flavour and taste. Secondly, the beef’s natural enzymes break down the connective tissue in the muscle, which leads to more tender beef. At BC Steakhouse the Rump is dry-aged for 21 days, whereas the beef on the rib is dry-aged for 35 days. The Rump is butchered and served using 300gm, the Rib-eye is served in portions of 350gm, whilst what is left and served ‘on the bone’, what they call here the Rib Chop is 800gm and big enough for two persons to share. The Black Angus has been grain fed for 200 days prior to slaughtering in Australia. In Bali it is dry aged in glass fronted refrigeration units which are on display behind the bar and on the walls. To dry age the beef the units are set at 65% humidity, you can see the beef at various stages of the ageing. All the steaks are grilled to your particular liking and served with Fries [big ones], Salad and your choice of sauce; peppercorn jus, horseradish cream, beer mustard or chimichurri [an uncooked Argentinian sauce consisting of chopped parsley, minced garlic, vegetable oil, oregano, and white vinegar]. Normally horseradish would always be my choice with rare quality beef but I found the beer mustard to be irresistible. The steaks are perfectly marbled, they retain their texture yet cut easily, the taste is amazing, a steak-lovers dream! There is also a Dry Aged Striploin, 300 grams of it, served with a charred onion mash. Amongst the starters there is one that I often have trouble with, Calamari, or call them squid rings if you prefer. They are on so many menus and for me usually akin to chewing rubber. I tried such a dish here, done Japanese style, and was very surprised. These are crunchy but chewable,

Just feel like a snack with a bit of substance, then stop by for one of BC’s dry-aged Corn Dogs. Any resemblance to those Hot Dogs sold on the street is purely coincidental. A beef sausage is dusted with chilli powder and served with smoked onion mustard. Grilled Chicken Wings are another option, with lemon zest, cracked pepper, chilli and coriander. They are served with a spicy aioli. Want a healthier option, then try a Kale Caesar, with charred croutons, grated parmesan, roasted garlic dressing, white anchovies and pumpkin seeds.

You want more than a snack but not a full steak meal? There are always the island’s most original hamburgers. Initially developed in Hong Kong to make use of the lesser cuts, The Butchers Club Burger Bars now outnumber the original steakhouses [Hong Kong and Singapore]. At BC Steakhouse they have retained the most popular of the Burgers on the menu, again dry-aged, beef patties of chuck, rump and brisket mixed. The standard burger is large and more than a meal for me, that perfect beef patty with glazed bacon, mature cheddar cheese, tomato, pickles and an onion spread.

Overall
: Amazing beef!
I am amazed that they also offer a ‘double’ burger which many customers are able to consume. Double Happiness is its name, a monster burger for those who never know when they have had enough! The normal burger is large [200 gms] but this one had two of them, plus double cheese and everything else, The burger bun has its top sliced off, which is then inverted and placed on top. A whopper of a whopper! I also like their fish burger, it uses a crisp bread-crumbed slab of perfect barramundi, encased in crunchy Japanese Panko breadcrumbs. It is served with their own tartar sauce and what they call ‘spicy’ coleslaw, although what they call spicy in Hong Kong is very tame for Bali. There is also a Veggie Burger, the patty of chickpea and vegetables with fried feta, spiced yoghurt, tomato and lettuce. However BC Steakhouse is not only about beef options, there is always someone in any dining group who wants something different. Half a chicken is one option, done Portuguese style, flattened and grilled on the BBQ. Or a simple pasta; Bucatini Carbonara, with mushrooms, smoked cheddar, shaved parmesan and sweet peas in a garlic cream sauce with black truffle oil.
Reviews that appear in Bali Advertiser are based on actual visits to the establishments listed, without the knowledge of the restaurants, and are not paid for by the individual restaurants.
Quality comes first here! The place is a must for real steaklovers as well as those who appreciate hamburgers totally assembled using only the highest quality ingredients, on the premises…. not bought in piece by piece.
Opinions expressed here are those of Gerry Williams and not necessarily those of Bali Advertiser. Gerry Williams attempts to write from a ‘typical’ diner’s perspective and, whilst quality of food is the most important criteria overall, value for money is the real measuring stick.

Living cleaner, greener lives and understanding the true impact of our lifestyle choices. It’s at the heart of my book. I spent three years traveling the world to understand the environmental and economic impact of everyone owning smartphones and electric vehicles. Also, clean water. Add clean water to remote villages and the transformation is incredible.

When was your first visit to Bali? 1998. It was a difficult time. The economic and political crises drove up the costs of everything. But the people had an amazing spirit, incredibly resilient. Since then, I’ve grown to appreciate the country as a whole. While Bali is fabulous, so are the other islands. I always push visitors to visit more of the country with its stunningly rich landscapes and amazingly warm and friendly people.
What gave you the idea of starting up a coworking space? I needed a space to be productive. For more than five years I used co-working spaces, cafes and hotel lounges to crank out emails or write a story. I couldn’t find a place that worked for me. I met others with the same challenges. We built Outpost in Bali to cater to those people who want to live extraordinary lifestyles. I felt that too often people come here with big ideas. But when they can’t find a space to get stuff done - it’s too hot, too difficult or there are just too many distracting things to do. Sure, they have great experiences, but they fall short of their hopes. I wanted to set up a place that catered to them.
Why did you choose Indonesia as a place to live and work? I love Indonesia. I feel there is a natural kinship between Indonesians and Westerners that is missing elsewhere. Out of all the places I’ve visited in S.E. Asia, Indonesia has been the easiest place to truly meet the people. I’ve been able to make deep friendships with Indonesians here.
Was it difficult to set up your business from a technological standpoint? Contracting with quality internet providers. My first order of business was establishing reliable infrastructure with good backup power and multiple lines of internet. I’ve learned that places that boast “the fastest internet” just parrot their provider’s claims. Headline speed means little because how internet providers slice bandwidth. There is so much variance in quality even from the same provider. Meeting with internet providers and getting the best arrangements, including a tremendous amount of high quality bandwidth took time.
Do Indonesians take full advantage of the internet? Indonesians with access to the internet have been extraordinarily adept at maximizing its powers. Facebook commerce dominates in this country compared to the US. The question is not how to use the internet but how Indonesians can align their business practices to use the internet to grow their services and offerings beyond Bali. It’s heartening to notice that increasingly Indonesians are using our space.
What are the biggest challenges facing foreigners who have just arrived in Bali? Dropping their preconceived notions on just about everything, from where you will live and how the food will
taste. Let the country and place reveal itself overtime and appreciate that process. The more you hope that Indonesia and Bali will conform to your expectations, the less likely you will last long.
From where do you recruit your staff? Our team are those who live locally. We also try to emulate Indonesia’s diversity, hiring staff originally from other places in the country with various religious backgrounds. I appreciate hearing from people who want to be a part of the business who write directly and can give a clear reason why they want to work for us. Enthusiasm is so important.

Outpost C/BT/G-14 Sept 16
We’ve had award winning authors speak, the founder of East Bali Cashews and just last week BBC presenters spoke about running businesses here. But it’s the small sessions on subjects like marketing where the most sharing takes place and are often the most rewarding. Our writing workshops, panel discussions on story-telling are also well attended. Recently, in a photo exhibition called Slideluck Potshow, people brought food and we all watched 15 local artists present their photography slides set to music.
Which computer classes have been popular? We’ve had great reception for our Drupal day where people from Denpasar came up for a free day tutorial on a new platform for creating webpages. That’s an example of what we are able to contribute to the community. It’s an event we’re hosting again in February. Except for idea sharing roundtables, all events are free and open to the public. Casual Fridays are big. We clear out the parking lot in the afternoon and play music, eat and drink. We’ve seen fruitful collaborations start with a drink and end in new partnerships. C/BT/G-9 Nov. 16
What do you wish Ubud had which is doesn’t have? A basketball court.

What a Thoughtful Little Snake Hi Kris, Just today I found this snake skin close by my pool when i was swimming with my 3 year old daughter. I am a bit concerned that we might have a resident snake in our garden even though we hardly have one and it is very well kept. We live in Sanur. I have attached a few photos of the snake skin. It looks a bit like a Cobra to me or am I wrong? What can we do to avoid such problems? I Look forward hearing from you. Best regards, Rilke.’ Just this morning I showed my 7 year old son the pictures from Rilke’s yard, and asked him what he thought about a snake in the garden. He said, ‘Snakes are mostly found in hot places and the jungle, but they could also be found in the garden - because it’s kind of like the jungle’ A child’s perspective is priceless! Their minds are always filled with clarity, if that is even possible - it sort of sounds like an oxymoron to me? I digress - my little boy is right. Being out in the garden we can expect to encounter all sorts of wildlife and critters, some may be benficial whilst others may cause harm to both you and your plants. Personally I am more scared of the wasps and the hairy catepillars than anything else! Snakes are called naga in Indonesian, or lipi in Balinese. Though you may not see them often, they are a just as much a part of Bali as the temples and street dogs. They have every right to be here, this is their home after all. In fact, snakes are somewhat revered in Balinese culture and the shedding of skin is seen as symbolic of re-birth and tranformation. From the photos (attached to this article), it appears that a baby cobra indeed passed through shedding its skin along the way. I can understand the cause for concern, even more so when there are children playing in the yard. Having a tidy garden is the first line of defence against inviting snakes into your living space. Living close to vacant land or rice fields (sawah) will also increase the chances of an encounter. A neighbour’s clutter or overgrown yard could also attract them, but there’s not much you can do about that - unless of course you’d like to clean up their mess? At the beginning of the wet season baby cobras are hatching and looking for frogs, rats and mice to eat. More rain means more frogs which usually also means more cobras .During the wet season (which peaks from December to February) cobra activity noticeably increases, though you may come across any sort of snake at any time of the year.
Snakes are also attracted to water sources such as ponds and water features, and have even been known to take a dip in the backyard pool. Pythons on the other hand find their way into ceiling cavities, awnings, storage sheds and garages feeding off rodents, and even family pets. It is not uncommon for cats and even dogs to mysteriously dissappear. Precautions that you can take to discourage snakes from your yard Keep the yard tidy - clean up overgrown plants, bamboo clumps, leaf litter, general clutter, and fill in the cracks, holes and crevices around the home and garden. Just clean up the junk and fill in the holes. Always wear sturdy shoes out in the garden. Be careful at night walking near rice fields, overgrown land or vacant lots. Even having done all that there is still the probabiltiy of an encounter, so the next best thing you can do to avoid a problem is to know what to do if you come face to face with a real live slithering one. If you see a snake, pause and then carefully make your retreat walking backwards. Keep your eyes on the snake at all times. Don’t try to catch or kill it. Most bites are caused by people either accidentally stepping on one, or otherwise trying to catch or kill them. Remember that it is probably more scared of you than you are of it. If you spot one leave it be, snakes only attack in self defence. A few years ago there was a story that made global headlines of a security guard killed by a 4.5 metre python outside the Hyatt in Sanur. The victim had caught the snake and flung it over his shoulders, it rapidly constricted and then strangled him to death in front of a crowd of horrified onlookers. This example shows why you should leave the snake handling to the experts, and even then they’re still very dangerous. As recently as last year a well known snake handler was bitten and killed by a king cobra bite in Jembrana, West Bali. In the unlikely event that you or someone you know does get bitten Try to identify the snake, even better take a photo with your phone if you get a chance. Stay calm. I know what you’re thinking - easier said than done, but an increased heart rate will pump the venom around your body much faster. Immobilize the limb that was bitten - raise it so that it rests above the level of your heart. Make a splint and firmly wrap a bandage from just above the site of the wound, as far up the limb as it will reach and back down again if possible. The bandage should be firm, neither too tight nor loose. This will slow the blood flow through the limb.
Don’t ever use a tourniquet. Under no circumstances attempt to do something as silly as trying to suck out the venom. Get to a hospital. Ring ahead of time to let them know what happened and that you are on your way. Sanglah hospital is your best chance at anti venom. SANGLAH HOSPITAL - Jalan Diponegoro Denpasar +62 361 227911 If you are concerned by a snake in your home or garden contact: Bali Reptile Rescue Free Reptile Removal and Rescue Service 24hour - Phone 0821 4638 0270 balireptilerescue@yahoo.com http://breptile-rescue.blogspot.com.au/ https://www.facebook.com/balireptilerescue The issue of living with snakes in Bali has been covered in the Bali Advertiser from various perspectives in the past, by both myself, Ibu Kat - Greenspeak and Kim Patra - Paradise... In Sickness & In Health. For further reading on Snakes and Bali there is a wealth of information written from various perspectives contained within past issues of this publication. I have supplied the online links below so that you can easily look them up. Certainly makes for some interesting reading and you will probably consider yourself somewhat of an expert by the time you have read through all of these! No matter how tidy your yard there is still always the chance that you will encounter a snake or the remnants of one. This is Bali, snakes are abundant! It’s more than likely that this snake was just passing through when it shed it’s skin - as opposed to taking up residence in your yard. On the positive side, at least it left you an oleh oleh (a souvenir) on it’s way. Now that’s what I call a thoughtful little snake! http://baliadvertiser.biz/serpents-in-my-garden-of-eden/ http://baliadvertiser.biz/bali_snake/ http://baliadvertiser.biz/cobra/ http://baliadvertiser.biz/bali_reptile/ http://baliadvertiser.biz/snake/ http://baliadvertiser.biz/snake-2/ http://baliadvertiser.biz/snake_bite/ http://baliadvertiser.biz/snakes_alive/

British Ex-war Correspondent on Trial in Bali for Drugs A British former war correspondent and an Australian businessman went on trial Thursday on the Indonesian resort island of Bali accused of using hashish. David Fox, 55, and Giuseppe Serafino, 48, appeared separately in court in the Balinese capital Denpasar after allegedly being caught in possession of small amounts of the drug in October. They are charged with using, possessing and transporting hashish and could be jailed for several years if found guilty. The defendants do not deny the charges, their lawyers said. After being arrested, Fox admitted to police that he had been using hashish for years due to the stress of covering conflicts. Serafino also admitted to using hashish, saying it was to treat the symptoms of cancer. Authorities raided Serafino’s house after a tip-off that a foreigner living there had been using drugs, Susina said.[ Coconuts Bali January 20, 2017]
Kiwi Admits Bringing Meth into Bali A New Zealand woman has admitted carrying methamphetamine when she arrived in Bali last year, her lawyer saying a friend had given it to her. A “nervous’’ Myra William said nothing as she was led into Denpasar Court on Wednesday for the first day of her trial, in which she faces charges of drug-trafficking and possession. Prosecutor Paulus Agung alleged the 26-year-old, who flew into Denpasar from Australia on August 31, began “babbling’’ when asked to queue for her travel documents. Drawing the attention of immigration officials, she was then taken to a waiting room. Later, when she got up from her seat to speak to a customs officer, a plastic pouch containing crystals fell out of her pocket, Agung said. It is alleged 0.43g of methamphetamine was inside. William’s lawyer, Poppy Eunike, said her client was not objecting to the indictment and admitted to having drugs on her when she arrived in Bali. “She admits that she carried it. It was given to her by a friend,’’ Eunike said after the court appearance. The maximum penalty for the possession of less than 5g of drugs is a 12-year prison sentence. Importation has a maximum of 15 years. If she is convicted for drug use, however, she would face a maximum sentence of four years’ jail. [ Otago Daily Times January 20, 2017]

Motorbike Ablaze on Ngurah Rai By Pass near Bali Airport People driving on the stretch of the Ngurah Rai By Pass just south of Bali’s airport on Wednesday afternoon got quite the spectacle as a motorbike was consumed by roaring flames on the side of the road. The Honda Supra Fit went ablaze after Ageng Wiwoho filled its fuel tank, reports Tribun Bali. Wiwoho and his friend riding on the back of the bike had stopped at a glass shop on the By Pass in Jimbaran to order a mirror for a closet. When they were on their way back home, the motorbike apparently ran out of gas, reports said. “After that, they stopped and bought one liter of gasoline. Once filled with gasoline, the motor was off for about five minutes. When it was turned on, suddenly a fire emerged from the carburetor,” The fire was around 2:15 pm, Tribun reported. “Without being able to stop the fire, the motorbike burned, leaving only the frame behind,” the source added. The woman had been driving around 2 am on Sunset Road back to her villa in the Jl. Nakula area when a man on motorbike tried to grab her bag and caused her to fall, reports Tribun Bali. The man did not manage to get her bag. Moments later, a stranger approached the French woman, helping her up after she fell from her bike, according to Tribun’s report. “While guarding her bag, the victim fell. At the time, the items in the bag of the victim were strewn out across the road. A man approached and helped her pick up her stuff,” But by “helping,” the man apparently took some of the items that had fallen out her bag, without her noticing. It’s alleged that the two men targeting the woman were working together. Police have both identified the deceased and have arrested the alleged suspect in the killing. Murder suspect Arif Santoso, 37 admitted he wanted the victim’s phone, police told reporters on Monday. On Saturday, local residents in Sidaykarya, south Denpasar came across a dead middle-aged widow, apparently discarded in a rice sack. Bali police have now identified the victim as 46-year-old Jematun, from Mojokerto, East Java. The suspect, Santoso, from Banyuwangi, East Java, was arrested at the junkyard where he had been working on Jl. Danau Tempe on Sunday afternoon around 2 pm, reports Nusa Bali. Physical evidence found at the scene of the crime such as a bottle of water and rope, along with CCTV footage near where Jematun’s body was discovered aided police in their 18-hour-long hunt for the woman’s killer, reports said. “Initially, he was evasive. But we dared to raid him, because of evidence bagged. Well, after that, he admitted everything,” Denpasar Police Commissioner Hadi Purnomo said, as quoted by Nusa Bali. Purnomo says that the suspect’s desire to make off with the victim’s phone was behind the motive. And local newspaper Tribun Bali published a report alleging there had been a sexual encounter between victim and suspect before the killing. [ Coconuts Bali January 23, 2017]

Nom de plume Do good by choosing a My RED Envelope business and they’ll do good by giving 10% to charity. You have probably heard about the red envelope given out during Chinese New Year. In the envelope is lucky money or ang pao in Hokkien. My RED Envelope is about lucky money for charities. The money has been raised by customers who buy goods from businesses, who will give 10% of the total payment to charity. My RED Envelope creates a partnership between businesses and charities for their common good. It is an active example of social responsibility, a term that is being used more and more in the tourism sector where customers are sensitive about the local impact travel can have on a community. Tourism can have a devastating effect, especially on low income locals who see little to benefit them and can be bypassed by the influx of money that comes with foreigners. This can lead to an ever widening gap between the poor and the rich and may also lead to significant social issues such as crime and unemployment. My RED Envelope will provide the opportunity for businesses to have a positive impact on the community in which they operate. In fact many businesses already practice social responsibility, donating to Yayasans and charities, recycling rubbish, providing support to the local Banjar. But social responsibility is also good for business as My RED Envelope partnerships will attract new customers to the business. My RED Envelope charities will have a specific target, eg to

raise 4.4 million rupiah, to pay for a scholarship for poor and underprivileged Balinese school children, which is actually our very first campaign between Lacalaca Cantina Mexicana in Seminyak and Bali Children Foundation. Each charity will be partnered with a business which agrees to raise these funds by giving 10% of what My RED Envelope customers spend at their business, until the goal has been achieved. The businesses will also have a target, eg to attract 100 new customers. This way we can ascertain if the partnership has been successful for both the charity and the business.
Our Campaign list for Seminyak is impressive and features Lacalaca, Red Carpet, Republik45, Saigon Street, Spa Bali and Zibiru. And the list of Charities is equally impressive. In any developing country there are people who need support, and it is great to know that in Indonesia there are some excellent Yayasans who are running excellent programs which support people in areas such as family and child support, education, environmental care and health. Some of them are small and targeted while others have extensive programs. But with all of them, any support coming from My Red Envelope goes directly to them. When the Charity’s target has been reached, the Business will present them with a RED Envelope containing the lucky money at a My RED Envelope Event. In this way, the money goes directly from the Business to the Charity. To get our full list of My Red Envelope campaigns, or to get information about our launches please visit our facebook page @MyLittleRedEnvelope.
Any questions? Ask Gaby at MyLittleRedEnvelope@ My RED Envelope will support each partnership to reach gmail.com its target, via our website, our facebook page, social media and other activities such as Cocktails In-Paradise and Want to keep in touch? SweetHearts. A SweetHeart is a volunteer who will put the Like us on facebook: word out about the My RED Envelope Partnership and MyLittleRedEnvelope raise awareness about the target to raise funds for their particular charity. Their activities may include site visits of both the business and the charity, news, photos and possibly running special events at the business such as afterwork drinks or lunches, all of which will raise 10% towards the charity.
