The Frugal Balinist * Jewelry making tips Almost every jewelry store employs jewelers who can resize rings and necklaces, set gemstones or gold plate jewelry by sending it out-of-house or have a ring, locket or necklace repaired. *When a Balinese couple (calon pengantin) gets married or engaged, they go to a Toko Emas to have their fingers measured for wedding bands. Recommended for good quality are: Toko Emas Windu Sara II, Jl. Sulwesi 132, Dauh Puri Kangin, Denpasar, tel. 0361-246404; Gallery Kohinoor, Jl. Sulawesi 106-108, Denpasar; Toko Perhiasan Emas, Jl. Bintang Mas, Jl. Raya Sayan, Ubud, tel. 813-3752-8445.

over your water pump room to keep out foreign particles. *Install a ventilation fan in your water pump room. *Install a sand filter on the bore water pump with automatic backwash. *Place a roof over external gas water heaters. *In Bali’s touristy Ubud market, all is expensive. But the strength of the market is rattan - bags, baskets, placemats, as well as coconut husk tissue boxes, sarongs, batik, masks, hand bags, salt and pepper shakers, etc. Expect good quality but high prices. *The upstairs floor of Camphuan’s Bintang Supermarket sells souvenirs, shoes, clothes and beads at fixed reasonable prices. *For home décor, real bargains can be had at the big souvenir stores such as Krisna Oleh Oleh Khas Bali-Pusat Oleh Oleh. * Ubud Health Care Clinic

*Don’t let guides or drivers take you to ostentatious and ridiculously overpriced silver shops where they earn big commission. Look for smaller jewelers who can custom make layered necklaces, pendants, long earrings, bracelets, body chains, cut metal emblems, or pieces set with beach glass, rose quartz, moonstone, etc. from a photograph (always shoot the image against a white background). *There’s a difference between a Toko Emas that sells only gold jewelry and a Toko Perhiasan which sells silver jewelry, body ornaments and imitation jewelry (perhiasan imitasi). * Household If you’re thinking of living in a city kampung (neighborhood) or in a village in the countryside of Bali, first visit the Klian Adat (kepala banjar, village council head) to find out about places to rent, if the area is safe, if he can suggest someone to work for you as a maid, carpenter, electrician, etc., what you should pay staff, etc. Invariably, the Klian Adat will speak Indonesian and perhaps even English in the more touristy areas. *Often the prosperity and management of a banjar can be deduced by the condition of its bale banjar (public hall) and its alarm drum tower (bale kulkul). *Bali Reptile Rescue is a non-profit that will send out a team to remove caught, cornered, dwelling or wounded reptiles from inside or outside your property; be sure to give them a generous donation for their time and skill. *Install a stainless steel cover

Offers first-class care at affordable prices. Dr. Krishna and his team provides warm, meticulous and personalized treatment for viruses, insect bites, burns, bike accidents, etc. They’ll pick you up from your homestay, hotel or villa and drop you off again free of charge. Costs of treatment in this clean facility are very reasonable compared to the U.S. or Australia (example: US$150 for two days of in-house care, incl. IV meds, prescriptions, transport). The English-speaking staff is friendly, compassionate, efficient and knowledgeable. Wait times are not long. Medical doctors and nurses will answer all your questions, clearly explain what they’re doing, give you a comprehensive medical evaluation, show you videos of your condition, write prescriptions, drive you to the pharmacy, send photos of your injury to a qualified surgeon in Denpasar, recommend a specialist, print medical reports, receipts and any paperwork that you may need to submit a travel insurance claim or apply for a flight cancellation. After treatment or post hospitalization, the staff is readily available by phone.

Hands-down it’s the best place to go in the Ubud area for almost any medical emergency. They also provide care for terminal illness, palliative elderly patient care and personal nurse care. Two locations: Jl. Sukma 37, Br. Tebesaya, Peliatan, tel. 821-8888-2273 (open 24/7); Jl. Raya Teges 8, Peliatan, tel. 811-3977-911. * Relocating? First read some “best countries for expats” lists on the web which might put some places on your radar. Reading blogs written by expats and watching YouTube videos by people who have moved to the country and are learning the ropes of living there can be informative, but keep in mind that what works for someone else may not work for you. Knowing someone local can make a world of difference when you move far from home. Meet friends at https://www.meetup. com and https://www.internations.org. Survey the country’s expat groups on Facebook which may have thousands of members who may have valuable insights and will approve your request to join if you express a desire to relocate there. Many cities with large expat populations also haves groups for specific neighborhoods, for foodies, for pet owners, for vegans, etc. Beware Bali tattooists! You’re putting your health at serious risk by getting cheap Aus$20 tattoos on Bali beaches, in filthy tattoo parlors, in a makeshift parlor on rooftop bars or even inside some dingy nightclub venues where the tattoo “artist” uses only a flashlight for a light. Some parlors use low quality ink while others have been linked to blood-borne infections, including HIV. Recipients have experienced chemical burns after getting a black henna tattoos. Though Hepatitis C is normally spread by sharing syringes, tattooists using needles that have not been properly sterilized also can cause this dreadful blood disease.

Restaurant Review

QUICK REVIEW Restaurant

: 10th Table.

A Star in the Northern Sky!

Address

: Jln. Raya Singaraja-Seririt,

10th Table presents intimate fine dining in Lovina for the first time. The place reeks of quality, and experience, which comes as no surprise as it has been set up by local Belgian Geert Jan de Meyer, for many years a hotel manager on Europe’s most luxurious cruise ships.

Soups can be the classic Bisque d’Homard with cognac and cream, served with a wooden strip resting atop the small bowl of intensely flavoured lobster bisque, holding a line of small prawns which have been shelled bar the tail to facilitate dipping in the broth below. Just as French is the Onion Soup, this version with puff pastry.

Telephone/WA

: 08234026660.

Website

Open

: Tuesdays to Sundays, dinners only.

Air-conditioning

: Private room, the 10th table.

Smoking Area

: Rear garden bar.

An alternate soup is described as a Burmese Lentil Soup, it arrives accompanied by a small tray of condiments for you to add as you wish, thus creating a taste to suit yourself, transforming a basic vegetarian standard to anything that you wish.

Pick-up Service

: Local hotels and villas.

Parking

: Secure, inside entrance.

Price

: Rp. 1,200,000 for two [+ drinks].

Credit Cards

: All major cards.

Food

: Mainly French.

Wine

: Medium, but well selected.

Service

: The ultimate.

Atmosphere

: Quiet fine dining.

Overall

: Style in the north!

The experience begins at the entrance, stylish and classy and that continues throughout the whole experience. The cuisine is decidedly French with the occasional Asian touch. The chef is actually from Myanmar, but with considerable experience in multi-starred French restaurants, and it shows. Begin your evening with aperitifs at the rear garden bar before dining in the main room where there are actually just 10 tables, as the name suggests, the 10th being the only large one and it is in an air-con private area, Very intimate!

The mains are outstanding. Fish can be Dory or Barracuda or a combination in a saffron infused traditional Mediterranean Bouillabaisse. The Rack of Lamb [pictured] is served a ‘perfect pink’ as you would expect from a French kitchen. The Beef is Wagyu and served with a tamarind reduction whilst the Beef Curry is a surprise as it displays a combination of both the chef’s heritage and his work experience, the curry is of Indian origin but it is wrapped in a filo parcel like a large money bag, and served with yellow rice.

Kalibukbuk, Lovina.

Non-smoking Area : Main dining room.

Desserts are simple, Chocolate Fondant with vanilla ice or Crème Caramel flambéed with Grand Marnier. Then it is time to return to the pleasant cool garden bar for those coffees and cognac, etc. Alternate menus are Degustation or Vegetarian, both with your choice of 6 or 8 courses, with or without wine pairing. The Vegetarian includes many interesting offerings; Stuffed Baby Zucchini, Papaya & Pomelo Salad, Sweet Potato Ravioli, Harissa coated Eggplant, etc.

You can dine a la carte which is mainly French or stray The ultimate dining experience can be enjoyed by ordering towards Asian and International with their Degustation or the very French Connoisseur Degustation Menu, again 6 or Vegetarian menus. 8 courses with wine pairing. The seared Foie Gras is served with chutneys and a brioche, 10th Table is an amazing step forward for Lovina and will be Smoked and Marinated Salmon with cream and the appreciated by all of those who enjoy the better things in life. Escargots with garlic butter, Pernod and parsley. An Asian starter is the fresh Shredded Chicken with papaya salad. The sleepy north comes alive!

Update Cafe des Artistes is a survivor. Once a lonely warung

on a dead-end road on the outskirts of Ubud [Jln. Bisma] it has been a thriving restaurant now for many years. The secret has been reasonably priced comfort food, served with a smile. Many of the staff have been there for the almost 20 years of its existence, always a sure sign of good management. Whilst their steaks are easily the most popular dish ordered here [pictured] my favourites have always been the Chicken Breast Provencale and their 100% perfect Thai Beef Salad, Yum Neua, a dish that is butchered all over Indonesia.

Monsieur Spoon, the popular French bakery and café at many locations in Bali, has gone Halal! An amazing decision as their clientele is almost exclusively ‘western’ expats and tourists. So no more of that traditional international brunch special, Ham & Cheese Croissant, the alternative is beef bacon, yuk! At least in Halal Malaysia they offer an excellent turkey ham which is almost as good, or maybe even better, than the original pork product. Bali, the home of the great Babi Guling is NOT halal, nor is there a need for it! Even 5 star hotels in Jakarta offer Bacon [pork] & Eggs, Ham & Cheese sandwiches, BLT’s etc. No more Monsieur Spoon for me!

Massimo, on Jln. Danau Tamblingan, has for many years

Consistent quality and service with a smile, always a success! They also offer a monthly list of specials [separately priced], this month, December, it will still be available as their Christmas special. Start with a Sharing Platter [samosa, spring roll, pakora and devlled egg] and dips], followed by either a Seafood Chowder or Burmese Lentil Soup [with spicy croutons], then your choice of a rich Beef Curry [rice, pasta or fries] or Harissa Egggplant [rolled slices stuffed with vegetables and herbs]. Finish with Pannacotta [with mixed berres]. Always a relaxing night at CDA!

served the most complete and best value Christmas dinner in Sanur. True to Catholic tradition it is served on the eve of Christmas [24th] rather than the protestant one of lunch on the 25th. It begins with a pre-aperitivo in the garden and is followed by a sit down meal of Antipasti, Tortellii all’Ossobuco, Roast Chicken [with stuffing, mash and red cabbage], Panettone Cake [with walnut gelato and chocolate sauce]. There is NO a la carte served on this night and children are welcome [special price] and receive a present from Santa Claus. On January 6 [the eve of the Orthodox Christmas day] Massimo’s also celebrates an old Italian custom; ‘Befana or Epifania’. Custom has it that a very old and ugly lady dressed in black drops the final Christmas present into the children’s socks [your kids will love it]. Different Stations are set up all around the property from where you can sample a vast array of cold and hot dishes. Prior reservation for either night is essential.

Café del Mar has opened at Canggu. It joins other group

beach clubs already operating in The Maldives and Thailand and is yet another beach club for Bali. In an attempt to create a Mediterranean feel about the place [blue and white] this

concept follows with the food on offer which is a mix of Mediterranean. Middle Eastern and creations from the other beach clubs in their group [Jackfruit Sung Choi Bao]; Morrocan flat bread with zaatar, dips and relishes, Moroccan style lamb meat balls with harissa, Greek Gyros with tzatziki, falafel, Pizzas and Salads.

Warung Nia, Kayu Aya Square, Seminyak, seems to have

done what no other in this location has, opened busy and stayed that way. Ostensibly a Balinese restaurant it also offers all the current goto dishes [pork ribs, etc]. The sate combination plates are a big attraction especially the prawn sate. The friendly service helps the satisfaction factor.

Sukun is the restaurant at the Amnaya Resort just off Jln. Kartika Plaza, Tuban [Gang Puspa Ayu]. Indonesian is the main cuisine although being in a resort there is a very International menu. Set in tropical gardens the setting was fittingly designed by the late Made Wijaya, who was once a young Australian tourist who made Bali his home and left many landscaping monuments, such as this, behind. It is a nice place to escape to in downtown Kuta/Tuban. Being a hotel the breakfast only goes to 11.00 a.m., something that I can never understand as many people, tourists and locals, often prefer a brunch to an early morning breakfast [and those who cater well for that are often busy all day as a result]. The product is good enough for that to happen here. Eggs dishes are to the fore with an excellent Benedict leading the way. An unusual but interesting breakfast offering was to combine eggs with soft shell crab. Balinese and standard Indonesian dishes are what is presented and there is a Balinese Megibung that offers a wide range of carefully selected local tastes. By Gerry Williams

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH MEASLES - A Preventable Tragedy Samoa is currently experiencing a tragic measles outbreak. Thousands of people have been affected and at least 70 have died, mostly children under the age of 5. With medical science providing us with the option not to get measles by vaccinating our children why are outbreaks like this still happening? The answer? People are choosing NOT to vaccinate. Indonesia has its own set of specific problems. Vaccination rates for measles have dipped across Southeast Asia, falling below the 95 per cent mark, which experts say is needed to fully protect a community from the infectious disease. At the same time, cases of measles have spiked in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines in recent years - part of a worldwide 50 per cent increase in measles cases seen last year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). For the past two years, the Philippines and Indonesia have had the world’s second- and third-highest rates of measles, behind India. In Indonesia, cases doubled from 2015 to a high of 11,300 in 2017, and 5,500 in 2018. The disease mainly affects children and is highly infectious. According to the WHO, roughly 2.6 million people died annually from measles before the advent of mass vaccinations in the 1980s. Anti-vaccine sentiment has been on the rise worldwide in the past two decades, particularly in the United States and in Europe - which saw 83,000 cases last year. A 1998 study - discredited but still cited in anti-vaccine communities online - linked the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine with autism, and coincided with growing public mistrust of medical experts and pharmaceutical companies. As elsewhere, anti-vaccine sentiment in Southeast Asia stems from public mistrust in the safety and efficacy of vaccines. Government mismanagement has made matters worse, with cases of mislabeling and faulty vaccines being spread widely on social media. Religious and ethical concerns within Muslim communities in Indonesia and Malaysia have also had an effect. A massive drive by Indonesia to vaccinate 70 million children last year was derailed when the country’s influential Islamic Council issued a fatwa against the measles vaccine because it contained pig components. Although the council clarified the vaccine could be used given no available alternatives, vaccination rates plummeted across Southeast Asia’s most populous nation to an average of 65 per cent - and as low as 6 per cent in Sumatra’s Aceh province. What is measles? Measles is highly contagious. An un-immunized child (or

older person) is very likely to catch it if exposed to a person who has measles. So what’s the big deal? Our Mothers used to take us to “measles parties”. When one child had measles all the Moms used to get together so their child would also catch it, get over it and auto-immunize themselves. Trouble is 1:1000 of those children will end up with serious affects from the disease. Measles can be a serious childhood infection. Measles is not just one of the things that children catch and get over. Children often get very sick with measles; they can have serious health problems and even die. Young children in groups such as child care and playgroups are particularly at risk of measles if they have not been immunized.

• •

• Measles is a serious illness caused by a virus (the Rubeola viris, not to be confused with the Rubella virus) and it is easily spread to other people. • It is usually spread by droplets (through coughing, sneezing, runny nose, or runny eyes). • The first signs come about 10 to 12 days after being in contact with measles. These include a fever, cough and sore, red eyes (conjunctivitis). • After 2 to 3 days the measles rash appears. This is the time when the person is most unwell. • Fever tends to improve after 2 to 3 days and the person usually quickly recovers unless there are other problems caused by the measles, such as ear infections, bronchitis and pneumonia.

Keep the child away from other children and anyone who has not been immunized for at least four days after the start of the rash. (This may not prevent others getting measles, since measles is also very infectious before the rash comes).

Health problems from measles Other health problems happen often and include ear infections, pneumonia, bronchitis and diarrhea. Measles may also cause permanent hearing and visual problems (blindness). Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) happens in around 1 in every 1000 cases, and about 15% of these children die. A further 15 to 40% are left with permanent brain damage. There are also other uncommon serious health problems from measles, such as encephalitis (subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, SSPE) that occurs several years after the measles illness and causes progressive brain damage and death. This occurs in about 1 in 25,000 cases. Measles tends to be worse in older children and adults, and is a common cause of death when children are malnourished or have other serious health problems and are un-immunized. Protecting children from measles • Measles vaccination in the form of MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is recommended for children when they are 12 months old and when they are 4 years old (immediately after their 4th birthday is suggested or before starting school). • Anyone who might have been in contact with measles should see his or her doctor for immunization as soon as

possible (within 72 hours), unless there is good evidence that the child or adult has had 2 doses of measles vaccine or has already had measles. If you are uncertain whether you or your child has had 2 doses of vaccine (or had the illness) get another dose of measles vaccine. There are no health risks in giving a dose of the vaccine to someone who is already immune. Immunization is likely to prevent the development of measles, because the immunization builds up the body’s defenses more quickly after immunization (4 to 6 days) than the virus infection develops (10 to 14 days).

Keeping children away from school or child care

If un-immunized people are immunized within 72 hours of their contact with measles they can return to school, child-care or work. What you can do Children with measles should be seen by a doctor for treatment and to watch for any other health problems. Since measles spreads so easily, a home visit by a doctor should be arranged, or an appointment at the doctor’s rooms can be arranged that does not put other people at risk. Children with measles need rest and extra drinks, and paracetamol can be used for high fever. Eyes will be sensitive to light, and usually the child will feel better in lower light. Light will not harm the eyes, but it can hurt them. Do not take you child out to places where other people may be exposed to your child’s infection. In countries or communities where a child’s diet may be deficient in Vitamin A, extra Vitamin A can help recovery from measles (care is needed to select the correct dose).

BOOMER CORNER Planning for the End of Your Life Who will end up with your books and your tchotskes, your gadgets and your garden tools when you change your cosmic address at the end of your life? It’s probably the easiest and least onerous part of your estate planning to make a list of all your possessions and decide who will get the stuff you have accumulated all these years. Will Junior get your porno movie collection? Your daughter might like some jewellery or family heirlooms; maybe your best friend would appreciate your gadgets or garden tools. You have made your Last Will and Testament? Good. That takes care of your estate, your possessions and financial accounts and settles your preferences. Or does it? Estate Planning Planning for the dissolution and distribution of your estate is not that cumbersome but you need to take a few things into account, especially if you have property or a foot in two countries. Besides the bequests and provisions your last will and testament should appoint an executor who will take care of administrative and financial matters such as liquidating bank and investment accounts, your pension or retirement accounts, ensuring your assets go to the proper beneficiaries, paying any debts or taxes. It could also include selling your home or terminating your lease. And with foreign property rights restricted in Indonesia, be sure you don’t leave behind a can of worms your executor will have to deal with.

Security or National Insurance numbers and make sure you tell your family or carers where to find them. This includes passwords so your online accounts can be accessed. Other practical directives should address the paying of any taxes due, utility bills, recurring payments or donations. Any time a major change occurs in your life, make sure your will and last directives reflect it. End-of-life preferences Now that the estate portion of your bounty is settled, have you given a thought to the other end-of-life decisions you need to make while still, as they say, of sound and competent mind? What about drawing up a Living Will that will instruct your nearest and dearest how you want to be cared for when you are no longer in a position to verbalise coherent thoughts? Remember there are very important instructions in regards to your end of life preferences that simply do not belong in a Last Will and Testament since that document will not be read until after your death.

Including your will, make a list of critical documents that the will’s executor will need to settle your estate like your insurance policies, bank and investment account statements, credit and debit cards, pension and tax documents and pertinent information like your Social

And now for the big caveat: Remember that every country has its own norms and regulations when it comes to durable health care and appointing a health care proxy. If you plan to die in Indonesia you are well advised to inform yourself of the practices here. In fact, a quick survey among a few Bali lawyers reveals that unfortunately, the Indonesian law system does not recognise a Living Will. However, you can draw up a private statement letter regarding your medical directives and wishes on how medical personnel should treat you in case of a lethal condition. This statement letter only indicates your wishes and does not have the strong enforcement capacity like a will. It behoves you to discuss these matters with your private physician now and see where you stand. In the end it doesn’t really matter - or does it to you? Statistics claim that nearly half of people age 55 and older don’t have a will. I bet the percentage is even higher for not having a Living Will. Yet it is important to document your end-of-life preferences and communicate those to your family and/or the people that are likely to be near you at that crucial time. Putting a plan in place for things like medical care and funeral arrangements helps ensure that upon your death, your wishes are carried out and that family squabbles are avoided over your dead body. In terms of funeral arrangements, you can leave the arrangements to a competent service like Antara Bangsa Funeral Services. Expats in Bali concur they are very good and take care of the details.

Even if you have little in the way of assets or possessions, you should have a simple will because if you die intestate the legal system in your location will decide who gets your assets, no matter how massive or meager. Things are more complicated if you are the parent or guardian of a minor child, have an informally adopted or sponsored child and there’s no document stating what you want to bequeath them or who will care for them after your demise. By the same token, are you making some provisions for your faithful staff who may lose their jobs and probably have no retirement or financial cushion to fall back on? Another thing to consider is to make sure that your will does not contradict the account beneficiaries named on your retirement accounts, life insurance policies and the like. The person listed as the beneficiary on each of those policies will get the money even if your will says otherwise. Make sure your beneficiary designations are up to date and sync with any other legal provisions you have made. It pays to review the beneficiaries on all your accounts. You may not be ready to die and in fact may yet have a long bout of life ahead of you but remember that things change, people come and go in your life and situations alter. Be sure these changes are updated in your will.

Your instructions should also indicate your wishes for preferred last rites, burial, cremation or repatriation preferences, appoint a funeral service and a trusted relative or friend who agrees to take care of all that. Also don’t forget to leave behind a list of family and friends you want notified. ‘Next of kin’ may not be near if you have family in another country. Indonesian Immigration and your consulate also need to be informed.

The western way to do that is to draw up an Advance Directive, a legal and binding document that outlines your wishes if you become incapacitated due to illness or injury. It sets forth the specific life- supporting or prolonging measures you would like applied -or not- like resuscitation or CPR, or whether to end all life-saving measures. Your wishes should be written down and the document given to the people most likely to be close at the time of your demise. You should not leave these agonizing decisions to others. These instructions should include the type of care you wish to have, the medical team and the hospital you want to end up in. If you wish to be an organ donor here in Indonesia you can register with Komite Transplantasi National (the National Transplant Committee) or the Eye Bank (Bank Mata Indonesia) ahead of time and stipulate that in your directive.

C/He/G-23 Oct 19

Don’t wait to put your affairs in order. Now, while you are still hale and healthy and still have control of your belongings and the execution of your last wishes, is the best time to put some order in your end of life preferences. Don’t wait until life’s inevitable loops throw you a curve and beat you to it.

BALI’S BEST TONIC Did you know that the Balinese don’t wait to get sick, they use a variety of home grown herbs and spices to create health tonics that keep them in good health and help fight illness.

Every once in a while, you’ll see someone riding the streets, or outside the local markets, with a tray full of orangecoloured bottles, and a queue of locals waiting to buy and drink. This is “jamu”, made with ginger and turmeric and all sorts of other local 100% natural ingredients, the actual sugar free recipe is usually a closely-kept secret. Some of you already know someone who supplies you with jamu tonic on a regular basis. For the result of us, Kubu Jamu is now making this delicious and powerful tonic and will deliver them to your home in recyclable glass bottles. Cost: 30,000 rp for one 250ml glass bottle. Resellers are also welcome and will receive wholesale prices. E-mail: kubujamu@gmail.com. Phone & Whats app: +6289 654 960 967.

Bali, is providing a haven for the IUCN-listed Bali starling - considered the second rarest bird in the world - with the active support of the island’s very poor local community. The conservation society works together with the locals, who made this project part of their local law in exchange for a variety of community support programs. Despite being a poor island, the communities protect the highly valuable birds from being stolen and sold. Visitors are welcome to contribute through a variety of volunteer projects on the islands and there is volunteer accommodation for those who stay and work for a specific time. You can also “adopt a starling”. The initial 65 birds released into the wild a few years ago have grown to more than 120 in 2019, with additional pairs bought from breeders on Bali and released regularly to increase the genetic diversity of the starling community. For more information, email info@fnpf.org.

is less and less land available for rice cultivation, so the answer is often to use land that is less accessible or has undulating terrain. Using prefab components makes it possible to set up a home in fairly remote areas in a short timeframe, with minimal disruption of the land concerned. Dornier’s Stilt Studios come in a variety of sizes, from one-story to multi-level, all raised above the ground to reduce the structures’ impact on the local environment. The prefabricated homes can easily be disassembled and moved to new locations. The design has sustainable features, including integrated rainwater collection systems and solar power. ANCIENT ALCHEMY

UBUD TO TANZANIA If living in Bali has given you the urge to visit spiritual places, take up this invitation from Ubud-based international wildlife and cultural photographer, David Metcalf. David has been granted access to bring a small group to explore the Ngorongoro Conservation Area by four-wheel drive in early February 2020.

COMMUNITY-MINDED SPACE

The Tanzanian government has strictly protected this area, allowing only the Maasai and their guests to walk inside the Ngorongoro Crater. Ngorongoro holds an unmistakeable energy; our emotions are stirred and we inspired to peaceful reflection. David’s group will live in their village in a homestay arrangement, observing their customary indigenous wisdom and natural healing with a Maasai “Laibon” (spiritual leader and medicine man). For more information, email davidmetcalf312@gmail.com. BALI’S PRECIOUS BIRD

Kudos should be given to the Paradiso Café team for their generous, community-minded attitude, which has led them to offer various rooms within the complex to community projects, often free of charge.

In February 2020, Kul-Kul Farm continues its series of workshops on the fascinating world of Spagyrics, ancient alchemy and herbalism. Master alchemist Carlos Gallo, from Escola de Espagiria in Brazil, will use the principles and philosophies of Spagyrics – the extraction of divine gifts – to guide participants through the ancient practice of herbal medicine making. Alchemists believe that one can extract the essence of materials from a plant (based on the essential elements of nature, fire, water, and earth) and then recombine them to create a single ‘essence’ with powerful medicinal properties. The February workshop will focus on how to make plant wines and medicinal tinctures with a series of practical, hands-on sessions using herbs, fruit and other plants from the KulKul’s rich and diverse organic garden. For information and bookings, please visit www.kulkulfarmbali.com.

I was reminded of this when reading on Facebook’s Ubud Community group page about some people who wanted to open another book club in Ubud. The intention of the small group – a mixture of locals and ex-pats, some avid readers and others keen to improve – is to meet every three weeks and discuss a book that they have previously agreed to read. Within an hour or so of the original post, which was seeking other potential book club members, Paradiso had offered its Paradiso Downstairs space to the group. Paradiso – like the Yoga Barn, Taksu Spa and others – is very encouraging of anyone with a bit of creativity and the intent to share their time and expertise with the wider community. Ubud Float Garden Takes Visitors on a Journey Within Most of us spend the better part of your lives distracted by the world ‘out there’—mobile phones, the internet, the news—and never get to experience a moment of true presence and connection to ourselves. Billing itself as Bali’s first sensory deprivation tank center, the Ubud Float Garden is all about providing visitors with the time and space to switch off from the sensorysaturated nature of modern life. Nestled just outside the heart of Ubud, the facilities have been developed in accordance with the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which focuses on creating harmony with nature, harmony among people and harmony with god. As such, the center offers a range of experiences designed to restore overall well-being and help visitors activate their fullest potential.

Set amid lush gardens and verdant rice paddies, the Ubud Float Garden features two sensory deprivation tanks. The manager of Ubud Float Garden, Intan, believes that the idyllic settings is precisely what sets the space apart from other similar facilities in the world. “While most other float centers try to save costs by housing their tanks in small, sterile office building settings, we have chosen to house our tanks in a natural setting, where users have the opportunity not only to connect with themselves while in a tank but also reconnect with nature before and after their float.”

The tanks have been engineered to provide an environment free from the sensory inputs that occupy our minds on everyday basis. Dark and soundproof, the tanks are filled with Balinese holy water, which is kept at body temperature. The water is mixed with 1000 pounds of purified Epsom salts, making the tanks 90 percent gravity free to facilitate the feeling of weightlessness. Post-float, visitors are encouraged to explore the center’s extensive grounds, which include a labyrinth and a foot reflexology walking path. Intan says that while each experience in the tank is determined by the respective visitor’s state of mind, most people experience a profound sense of peace and clarity. She also says that the center welcomes a huge variety of people and ages. “Our clients come from all backgrounds and walks of life. Anyone who is interested in feeling their best and performing at their fullest potential can visit us to experience what the center has to offer,” she says. “We have had young and old, big and small, hippies and hipsters, as well as corporate and creative types. We even just hosted Novak Djokovic, one of the world’s tip tennis players.” The elimination of external stimulation offered by a session in one of the center’s tanks is said to have a huge number of benefits. It lets visitors unplug from the hectic pace of the everyday world, and enter a state of physical and mental relaxation. “Some of the benefits most often discussed include increased mental clarify, focus and creativity. Many people also report a feeling of profound physical relaxation and rejuvenation, especially those suffering from sore muscles and post-workout fatigue,” Intan says. “There are also more esoteric benefits including access to altered states of consciousness that can allow users to tap into other ‘realms’ of information and insight.” Ubud Float Garden also offers ajna light treatments. The sessions involve the use of the latest LED lighting technology to send light flashes in the direction of a person’s third eye (ajna translates to third eye in Sanskrit). The flickering light reaches the retina, creating an incredible show of vivid colors and geometrical patterns. “These powerful pulsing

lights trigger the pineal gland to release a small dose of DTM—similar to when you enter into REM sleep—to accelerate the experience of deep meditation through brainwave entertainment,” says Intan.

While both floating and ajna light treatments have the most benefit when done on regular basis, the prescribed frequency of these should take into account each individual’s state and goals. “We recommend starting with three sessions, ideally within a week, so that the user can benefit from the cumulative effect of these practices,” Intan says. “Fortunately, both modalities have relatively long lasting effects, which can go for days or even weeks beyond the session itself.” Not only relaxing, the therapies offered by the Ubud Float Garden deliver a powerful experience of deep presence that we can learn to access ourselves during overwhelming or stressful times in our daily lives. “The universe is a big place. Infinitely big. But as above, so below. There is an infinite world within too,” Intan says. “Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the ‘you-niverse’ within.” https://ubudfloatgarden.com/ By Anita Copyright © 2020 Bali Advertiser You can read all past articles of BA Feature Article at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Alternative Voice Don’t write off the Liberal World Order Just Yet “Homo Deus” is not yet upon us... Talking to a millennial the other day he happened to mention that he’d just finished reading “Sapiens” a book written by the young Israeli academic Yuval Noah Harari, which gallops through human history in 400 pages, relating how homo sapiens had come to dominate the earth. It is masterfully done in a rather hip flip kind of way, blowing away the residues of myth and magic that still manage to survive into the third milleniun AD. “I enjoyed it, though it required a lot of concentration. I found I wanted to re-read passages quite a lot”, he said. “Did you read his second book “Homo Deus?”, I asked. He hadn’t. He planned to though, but thought he’d take a break with some lighter reading first. It’s not that Yuval Harari is a hard read exactly. More that, for anyone who hasn’t already done the work there is a lot to take aboard that can be either liberating or alarming, depending on your cultural baggage.

That... to say the least, is quite a semantic stretch. Stalin and Hitler may have professed certain humanistic principles but they certainly never practiced them and in reality, opposed the essence of what humanism stand for. Most humanists would agree that the world view Harari describes has been responsible for many of humanity’s greatest errors. What they disagree with is that such a worldview is humanism by any conventional understanding of the word. In short Harari’s view of humanism is an odd one, quite at variance with the reality. To compare: What Yuval Noah Harari (YNH) says about humanism: It involves the belief that “homo sapiens has a unique and sacred nature that is fundamentally different from the nature of all other beings and phenomena”.

With Homo Deus Harari reprises his first outing in Sapiens but goes on to do a massive deconstruction job on the Age of Enlightement and Humanism in general, as we head into a new world where immortality is seriously sought and mankind has been reduced to an algorithm. In short our post-human future, if we have one. It makes for disturbing reading.

History is quite clear what happens to a redundant species, become inconvenient to a superior species. One way or another, they disappear. Yuval Noah Harari and his books are extremely well received among the callow and newly-minted billionaires of Silicon Valley, as he is among ageing corporate titans. They reckon they’re going to do OK in this new world. AI will not only keep the masses at bay until they’ve been sorted out, but they can live the Life of Reilly for 500 years, marbles and mobility intact. With the useless classes out of the way ecological clean-up of the world will be a technological doddle. Such a brave new future is no longer science fiction, we are already in its opening stages. The reason Homo Deus is such a distrubing read is that Harari seems to see a post-human age as inevitable. He likens the Humanistic Age of the past 400 years, that brought unprecedented wealth, knowledge and social progress to the world after 1,500 years of stagnation, as a failed religion with nothing further to offer us. Moreover he blames Humanists for all the convulsions and evils of the 20th Century, holding it responsible for everything from religious wars, slave trading, colonialism, genocide, Nazism, Stalinism, Maoism and the ecological trashing of the planet.

Harari: says Humanism can be divided into three groups: ‘liberal humanism’, ‘socialist humanism’, and ‘evolutionary humanism’, each with its ‘supreme commandment’ (freedom of the individual, equality within the species, encouragement of our evolution into superhumans). Humanists: Humanism often shares liberal or socialist aspirations such as freedom and equality of opportunity; however, it acknowledges that no single political goal is of ‘supreme’ importance and that human wellbeing involves compromise between conflicting values. It has never sought the evolution of human beings into superhumans. Harari: asserts the crimes of Nazism, Stalinism, and environmental destruction all find their origins in the central tenets of humanism. Humanism is responsible for ‘an age of intense religious fervor, unparalleled missionary efforts, and the bloodiest wars of religion in history (the conflicts of the 20th century).’ Humanists: Totalitarian ideologies are antithetical to humanism. Humanists reject all forms of ideological rigidity that do not open themselves to question and criticism. Humanists have consistently opposed totalitarian ideologies as such doctrines have dismissed human rights and reduced individual human beings to tools in the pursuit of some ‘greater’ goal.

Many scientists from Dawkins to Hawking warn us of the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) and while science informs us AI can never actually achieve human consciousness it can certainly become a lot smarter than us, and could decide to replace us. But the most immediate danger and very possible, given the way the world is headed, is that such a world will belong to a very small elite, comprising the very rich and hi-tech super brains who will have no use for what is already being called in these circles, the “useless classes”.

other life. Encourages us to extend our circle of moral concern to all sentient creatures capable of suffering.

Harari: states Humanism is founded on monotheistic beliefs.’ What humanists say about humanism Not so, it does not hold man is uniquely sacred; it recognises that human beings have certain capacities and capabilities that are not shared in the same depth by other living creatures, but acknowledge that any differences between us and other animals is one of degree rather than of kind. Harari: Humanism is a family of religions that ‘worship humanity, or more correctly, homo sapiens.’ Humanists: No, humanism is not a religion. It rejects the worship of anything, including human beings (human beings should seek to take down the pedestal they say, not climb up on it). It holds that everything is open to question and that to worship something puts it beyond enquiry and criticism. While rejecting the worship of human beings, humanism says all human beings deserve to be treated with dignity. Harari: Humanism seeks to perfect humanity or sees the perfection of humanity as ‘the supreme good’. Humanists: No, it recognises that perfection is an unrealistic goal, acknowledges the flaws in human nature, and seeks to work within such parameters to improve the wellbeing of human beings in the here and now. Harari: claims Humanism sees ‘the rest of the world and all other beings exist solely for the benefit of [our] species.’ and believes that the environment should be controlled and manipulated for human needs. Humanists: No, it does not. It recognises that the natural environment nourishes and sustains not only us, but all

Humanists: Humanism has evolved in parallel to the world’s great religions, with humanist ideas dating back to ancient China, India, and Greece. Both humanist and religious beliefs have influenced each other during their long history. Worldviews and ideologies covered by Harari’s definition of humanism include: Communism, capitalism, nationalism, Nazism, utopianism, human-sanctification, transhumanism. Moreover, since Harari’s humanism also does not deny the existence of a god it is therefore inclusive of various religious worldviews. Humanist worldview: Humanism is humanism, nothing more or less. Its tenets are simple and clear. It is too early to write off the liberal humanistic world order, whose victory was proclaimed way too soon by Fukuyama and others in 1989. The excesses of globalisation and reactionary populism have still to run their course. Humanistic principles and the nation state, albeit grouped into trade blocs, working through truly accountable and reformed international bodies, remain our best hope yet to protect the planet and regulate successfully against the horrors of runaway science, corporatism and despotism. Prof.Yuval Noah Harah ably takes us to the brink of the chasm... and leaves us there.

Unique Traditional Dishes for New Year’s Eve All Over The World New Year’s Eve is not only about party and fireworks. Various methods are carried out to welcome the new year in various parts of the world, including enjoying unique food.

This tradition comes from Africa and West India brought by the slaves to South America.

This tradition took place since the turn of the 20th century made by wine producers.

3. Oliebollen

6. Marzipanschwein, Austria

Starting from cakes and various breads, noodles that symbolize longevity, peas symbolize coins, or pigs that symbolize luck.

Netherlands Oliebollen is a ball-shaped fried food that is sold with a cart. This food is usually consumed on New Year’s Eve or special celebrations. Oliebollen is shaped like a donut made by dropping a spoonful of dough mixed by raisins and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

The Austrians enjoy the New Year’s Eve by drinking red wine mixed with cinnamon and spices. The red wine is eaten with processed pork called Marzipan or Marzipanschwein.

Besides those foods above, there are other unique dishes that become food traditions when celebrating the new year. Here are some unique foods during the new year from all over the world.

7. Cotechino con lenticchie, Italy At New Year’s Eve, the Italians enjoy Cotechino con lenticchie. This is a sausage and stew called fortune. This food symbolizes money and good fortune. This tradition is then ended by eating a ball-shaped dough filled with honey and refined sugar.

1. Tamales, Mexico

8. Herring pickle, Poland and Scandinavia

4. Soba noodles, Japan Families in Japan welcome the new year by enjoying soba noodles while saying goodbye to the past year. This tradition, which has been going on since the 17th century, signifies the hope of longevity and prosperity. Tamales is a corn mixture filled with meat, cheese, and other additional seasonings. Tamales are wrapped in banana leaves or cornhusk. Many families in Mexico make Tamales every new year and share it with relatives and neighbors. This dish is served with a soup that can relieve hangovers after New Year’s Eve.

Herring fish are commonly found in Poland and Scandinavia. Its silver color symbolizes prosperity and gift. Therefore, people in that country eat herring pickle on New Year’s Eve. Herring pickle is made by soaking the whole herring with salt for 24 hours then putting it in a jar with onions, sugar and vinegar. 9. Kransekage, Denmark and Norway Kransekage is a cake consisting of many layers of concentric rings made to celebrate New Year’s Eve.This cake is made using marziba, a bottle of wine, and decorated with various ornaments and flags.

2 Hoppin ‘John, South America Hoppin’ John is a food that means hope for good luck in the new year. This food is from rice and peas (meaning coins) with pork and often served with other green vegetables (meaning money) and cornbread (meaning gold).

5. Twelve grapes, Spain The Spanish people welcomed the New Year’s Eve by eating one grape at each explosion at the midnight hour. The number of the explosions can reach to 12 explosions. Some people have even prepared the grapes by peeling and sowing first, so they can consume them as efficiently as possible at midnight.

10. King cakes, all over the world various king cakes or king cakes complete the New Year’s Eve around the world. The Greeks have vasilopita, France has a gateau, Mexico has Rosca de Reyes, and Bulgaria has Banitsa.

Local News ‘We will promote arak’: Bali to boost production of traditional liquor as distribution legalized With the type of tourists that Bali attracts, alcoholic beverages are certainly not in short supply on the island. But the local government believes that Bali’s own traditional liquor isn’t nearly as popular as it should be, and a new regulation from the central government may just give it a shot at prominence. Earlier this year, the Bali Provincial Government appealed to the Ministry of Industry to legalize the distribution of Balinese arak, a traditional liquor made from tuak (a sweet drink from coconut palm flower). The appeal was granted recently, meaning that arak can be legally produced and marketed islandwide. “We will promote arak,” Governor I Wayan Koster said, as quoted by Tribun Bali. “[Now] we can compete with the Japanese Sake.” With the ruling, Koster said the provincial government will support local arak producers in Bali, many of whom are based in Karangasem, Buleleng, and Tabanan regencies. Bali currently produces 1.1 million liters of arak per year, but Koster is eyeing a massive boost to production - up to around 6 million liters per year - on the back of legalizing distribution. He also appealed to local producers to uphold quality and lower alcoholic levels if needed from now on. “We will take care of those with local arak [distilleries], I have collected their data, for Balinese people only. So our arak producers will thrive,” Koster said. Balinese arak was among the thousands of illegally distributed liquor bottles confiscated and destroyed by the police recently. We imagine that figure would decrease drastically now that distribution of arak is legal. (coconuts.com December 24, 2019) Police confiscate 33,400 diazepam tablets in Bali The Bali Police’s antidrug squad personnel have apprehended two men who were attempting to trade 33,400 diazepam tablets, popularly known as Pil Koplo, in the resort island. The suspects, only identified by their initials AMW, 32 and ACN, 32, were nabbed during a raid at their rented room on December 3, 2019, Bali Police Spokesman Sen. Coms. Syamsi said. The police confiscated 30 plastic bags containing 33,400 tablets of the drug also known as Double LL, investigators speaking to Antara in Denpasar Friday, said. The suspects, who could be arrested only after the police received tip-offs about their suspicious drug transactions, are currently in police custody for investigation, he said. Both AMW and ACN are residents of Jember city in East Java Province. They are charged under the Indonesian Health Law Number 36/2009, he added. Indonesia remains under grave threat from drug dealers, as several individuals from its working-age population have been embroiled in a vicious circle. According to the National Narcotics Agency’s report, some 50 drug use-related deaths occur in Indonesia. However, their deaths have failed to deter other drug users in the country from consuming these banned substances. Users of crystal methamphetamine, narcotics, marijuana and other addictive drugs transcend communities and socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Hence, Indonesia is perceived by both domestic and transnational drug dealers as a potential market due to its huge population and millions of drug users. The drug trade in the country is estimated to reach nearly Rp66 trillion. In response to the illicit drugs that drug kingpins have smuggled into and traded in the country over the past few decades, the Indonesian government continues to apply punitive measures against them. Earlier, the Indonesian authorities announced that 14 death row prisoners convicted in drug-related cases would face the firing squad. In July 2016, Indonesia executed four death row inmates for drug trafficking. They were drug kingpin Freddy Budiman of Indonesia, Humprey Ejike and Michael Titus of Nigeria, as well as Seck Osmane, a Nigerian national holding a Senegalese passport. The convicts were executed by a firing squad at the Tunggal Panaluan shooting range in Nusakambangan Island off Central Javas southern coast at 12:46 a.m. local time on July 29, 2016. Ten inmates, however, escaped the third wave of executions on July 29, 2016. These were Merry Utami, Pujo Lestari, and Agus Hadi of Indonesia; Zulfiqar Ali of Pakistan; Gurdip Singh of India; Onkonkwo Nonso Kingsley, Obina Nwajagu, Eugene Ape, and Ozias Sibanda and Frederik Luttar of Zimbabwe. The return investment of the project will be accommodated with a 15-year collaboration,” he explained to radarbali.com.

Meanwhile Badung Regent, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, said that Badung is the tourism destination gateway of the island of the gods and the district is also a destination for international meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE). That’s why proper and international standard infrastructures are needed. “The construction of the southern outer ring road is a necessity,” he concluded. (SeminyakTimes.com December 23, 2019)

2 (two) Indian nationals may face death penalty for smuggling meth into Bali Two Indian nationals, 32-year-old Manjeet Singh and 26-yearold Harvinder Singh, began their trial at the Denpasar District Court yesterday, a few months after their arrest on suspicion of smuggling at least 2.7 kilograms of shabu (meth) into Bali in September. The defendants’ charges, which were read out during the trial, include drug smuggling under Indonesia’s notoriously harsh anti-narcotics law, with death penalty being the maximum punishment. As reported by state news agency Antara and Nusa Bali today, prosecutor I Made Lovi Pusnawan said during the trial that the defendants received a package from an unknown man, identified as Kulwant Kulkata, in Jakarta on Sep. 2 with orders to take the package to Bali. They were promised a payment of drug deal, leading to them arresting the two men at a hotel IDR9 million (US$642). located in South Kuta. The court heard that the meth was “When the two defendants were about to depart from Jakarta planned to be brought to Buleleng, intended for island-wide to Denpasar, they tucked a blue fabric bag containing shabu circulation. The two defendants, through their attorney, packages inside their luggage and covered it with clothes objected to the charges read against them. The Denpasar belonging to defendant Harvinder Singh,” Lovi said. On the District Court is set to call on witnesses to testify at the next morning of Sep. 3, police received a tip-off about a planned court session. (coconuts.com December 23, 2019)

Bali records over 22 thousand HIV/AIDS cases, 5th highest in Indonesia Bali has among the highest number of people living or lived with HIV in Indonesia, according to the Bali chapter of the AIDS Commission (KPA). On Saturday, KPA Bali announced that it has updated its tally of HIV/AIDS sufferers in the province to 22,034 as of November 2019, from when the data was first recorded in 1987. “Based on the number of cases on the national scale, Bali placed fifth after Jakarta and West Java,” KPA Bali official Made Suprapta said, as quoted by Radar Bali. Referring to data by Bali’s Health Agency, most HIV infections on the island were caused by unsafe sexual practices. Most of the infections occurred in heterosexual relations with 16.808 total cases (76.3 percent), followed by homosexual relations with 3,247 cases (14.7 percent) and bisexual relations with 110 cases (0.5 percent). Furthermore, the data showed that needle sharing (mostly for drug abuse) and perinatal transmissions were among minor causes of HIV infections.

citizens - especially those who are sexually active - to get routinely tested for HIV. Despite the high number of sufferers, the commission says that Bali’s medical facilities are still well equipped to treat those with HIV/AIDS. (coconuts.com December 24, 2019)

“The virus can be transmitted to people of all ages, but the data shows that the age group with the highest potential of being infected by HIV/AIDS is the productive age, between 15 to 60 years old,” Suprapta said. The commission is urging Bali

Agus Hadi of Indonesia; Zulfiqar Ali of Pakistan; Gurdip Singh of India; Onkonkwo Nonso Kingsley, Obina Nwajagu, Eugene Ape, and Ozias Sibanda and Frederik Luttar of Zimbabwe. (Antaranews.com December 24, 2019)

Travellers flying home from Bali face intense screenings at Australian airports

Tourists flying home from popular Indonesian locations like Bali are being warned to brace for lengthy delays and screening at Australian airports. Following an increased threat of African swine fever, biosecurity at airports across the country will be in overdrive this Christmas and new year. According to the Herald Sun, passengers arriving in Australia will undergo more questions than normal at immigration as well as an increase in detector dogs around airport terminals. Department of Agriculture biosecurity head Lyn O’Connell said there would also be extra warnings on all incoming flights. Passengers will be faced with intense screenings at Australian airports this festive season. “Summer is when our ports, airports and mail centres are busiest, but this holiday season will require extra vigilance from everyone,” Ms O’Connell said. “If you’re going overseas, think hard about what you bring back, and if you visit a farm or go off track to a rural area, declare it when you come home. “Avoid bringing high-risk products in your luggage and remove potentially contaminated soil on your shoes and camping gear.” If compromised product is brought into Australia, it could seriously impact our $5.2 billion pork industry. An African swine fever outbreak has swept across China, Vietnam, Cambodia and parts of Indonesia amid the absence of a

vaccine or cure for the disease. The disease does not transmit to humans as the virus dies during the cooking process. But it could contaminate other pigs that are located near the infected pigs – alive or dead. If brought into Australia, it could seriously impact Australia’s $5.2 billion pork industry. Visitors face a hefty fine if they bring pork products into the country. In Indonesia, at least 29,200 pigs have died due to the disease, causing losses to pig farmers in the province and driving people to stop eating pork. The threat to the Australian pork industry is the biggest since the bird flu, and if visitors are caught with undeclared pork products they will be hit with a $420 fine.
