Is Your Dog Scared of Fireworks? The sound of fireworks is frequently heard in Bali, not only at events like New Years Eve but even at regular parties and weddings. At Sunset Vet we are frequently asked for ‘something to give my dog to knock him/her out’. Although it may not bother us humans too much, noise fears or phobias are among the most common of all behavioural problems in dogs yet are frequently ineffectively managed. They are most easily treated with early identification and intervention where possible. So what are the signs to look out for? - Inappetance- Increased restlessness, shaking or trembling- Hiding- Panting- Drooling- Tucked tail, ears back or a crouched posture- Destructiveness (e.g. chewing or scratching)- Defecation (sometimes with diarrhea)- Vomiting- Vocalisation (whining, howling, barking)Self-mutilation (e.g. nibbling at paws)- Discharging anal glands- Seeking shelter close to the owner- Yawning- Increased blink frequency The problem with many of these signs is that they may be misinterpreted as being due to noise fear, when in fact they may just be attention seeking. Owners who try to reassure their animals may also be encouraging more extreme behaviour through inadvertent reinforcement of that behaviour. Differentiation between a learned attention-seeking and genuinely fearful behaviour can be tricky, as can distinguishing between a separation-related problem and a coincidental noise-related one when the owner is away. Where the problem is associated with a high level of attention seeking, the behaviour must be addressed by encouraging the dog to be more independent. Treatment of Noise Fears This has two goals: a) Immediate management of when the threat is imminent (e.g. just before a fireworks event) b) The long term resolution of the problem A) SHORT TO MEDIUM TERM MEASURES 1. Drugs (see below). These may be useful in some cases but must only be used under veterinary supervision. They are most effective if given before the noise starts. Drugs should complement the advice below rather than be used as a substitute for it. 2. Do not punish the dog. This will only reinforce that there is something to be afraid of. 3. Do not make a fuss over the dog. This will reward the behaviour and therefore encourage it. 4. Be jolly yourself, it will help counteract your dogs fear. 5. Make sure your dog is kept in a safe and secure environment, so it cannot escape when a sudden noise occurs. 6. Try using Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP, Ceva) to provide an emotionally secure environment. Usually available from Sunset Vet though suppliers here in Bali are unpredictable. 7. Consider blacking out one of the quietest rooms in the house when the fireworks season begins to create a secure retreat for the dog. Place toys in the room for the dog to play with. 8. Put some music on, something with repetitive drum beats is best. It need not be particularly loud, as long as there is a constant distracting beat to the music. 9. Try to engage the dog in some form of active game during the noises. 10. Pairing the fearful dog together with another non-fearful dog may help persuade the fearful dog that things are not so bad after all. 11. Earplugs can be made by dampening a piece of cotton wool and squeezing out any excess water. The cotton wool is then rolled into a cylindrical shape and twisted into the dogs ear as to pack the canal. The plug should be secure and firm, but not so tight as to irritate the dog. Remember to remove the plugs after the event.

Drugs frequently used to treat noise fears in dogs Alprazolam: Use to help control response to specific events. This is the drug of choice, in our opinion at Sunset Vet. It should be given at least an hour before the event, and then as required. Difficult to source in Indonesia though so sometimes its’ less effective sister drug is used, Diazepam. Clomipramine: Use long term for seasonal noise fears to help elevate mood. This is a tricyclic antidepressant often used to deal with thunderstorm fears. Fluoxetine: Use long term for seasonal noise fears Propranolol: Used to control physiological effects of fear such as increased heart rate Selegiline: Used in cases of inhibited (frozen) fear

For Sale; Wifi router TPLINK for sale, still new, price: Rp. 275 K. More info contact 0821 4468 4466. Denpasar. [113] For Sale; Maspion table fan EF-310, grey color, excellent condition rarely used. Rp. 125,000. Call or sms 0812 3872 2644. [107]

For Sale; Saitek digital chess clock / game timer. High quality, multiple functions- Blitz, Hourglass, Tournament, Bonus Timer, Bronstein, etc. Used only a couple times, still in box with instructions, etc. New was almost 1 million, now asking Rp. 475,000. Call or sms 0812 3872 2644. [110]

Acepromazine: Used as a sedative, given 1-2 hours before the event. Use of this drug is controversial as it depends on sedation rather than tranquillization for its effect and has also been associated with increasing the fear response on occasion.

C/CE/G - 6 July 16

B) LONG TERM RESOLUTION The aim here is to gradually desensitize the dog to sounds so that it no longer reacts with panic. To achieve this, recordings are available commercially. The idea is to start with sounds at a low intensity that resemble (but are not identical to) the problem stimulus, and gradually become more similar to the offending noise. A pheromone diffuser (DAP, Ceva) used during training may speed up the desensitization process. The next stage involves encouraging a response to the stimulus which counters the problem behavior, e.g. playing a game or a formal obedience command. Drugs may be necessary during the desensitization process in problematic cases, but the long term aim must be to get the dog off all medication. The danger is that owners tend to rely on the drugs at the expense of the other aspects of the treatment regime. The specific details of the desensitization programmes used vary, but owners must be aware that effective treatment takes weeks if not months to complete successfully, even in relatively routine cases. Whilst a percentage of dogs will perceive recorded and live versions of the same sounds as very different noises, recording-based programmes undoubtedly offer benefit in many cases. Current scientific thinking is that an improvement is possible in over 90% of animals with noise fears, though complete resolution is rare.

Children acting up Inflight

SKIN CANCERS ?

Entitlement alienates – Empathy only recourse

Black Salve - Cansema Cream

It is a truth pretty much universally acknowledged that as one advances into late middle age the more averse to loud and unnecessary noise one becomes, just as one becomes more set in one’s ways. In this at least I conform to my cohort.

No more - burning - freezing - surgery

One of my small pleasures is to get out of my house midmorning for what used to be called café au lait but nowadays when I ask evokes a blank look until I quickly amend my order to a flat white or latte. I’m never too sure about barrista nomenclature but whatever best approximates to the cherished café au lait of my youth is what I’m after. Venue is the next hurdle. Fortunately the town I live in has its fair share of half decent cafés serving an acceptable sized flat white (non-UHT) around the Rp.30K mark so the next consideration is ambiance. Most particularly music. I’m not averse to background music, precisely because I’m unaware of it. Vibrant pulsing gym music, atonal jazz or bubble gum pop are not my cup of tea or java at breakfast or mid-morning at any volume. Which brings me to children in cafés. My wife and I don’t have children, we have a cat and that’s quite enough at our age. Now despite what I’ve already shared, added to the fact that my favourite watering hole in Hong Kong bans children outright and certain members there are prone to refer to children as ankle biters, you might be thinking I’m an intolerant old grouch who hates kids. In fact I actually like most children, even in restaurants. If they cry or misbehave at times, that’s life and you put up with it best you can. Particularly since most parents are sensible of their surroundings and do make a reasonable effort to quieten or control their offspring. That’s just one tiny part of the social contract that allows us all to rub along, right? Not when it comes to air travel, it isn’t. Economy class travel today is an unmitigated ordeal with the airlines devising ever more sadistic strategems to charge more and serve us less. Is it any wonder that in such conditions the social contract breaks down? There’s an awful lot to test us. Squabbles over seat recline, overhead luggage bin space and arm rests for starters. An obese neighbour spilling over into a third of your seat or one with a nasty case of the sniffles makes for a difficult trip. As will being seated next to an incessant talker or a drunk. And then there are children... Infants, young kids and air travel are not a good mix. That said I am not an advocate for separate adult flights, even if it were possible it’s never going to happen – airline economics will see to that. Parents with children have as much right to fly as the rest of us and need to be accommodated accordingly. If we are unlucky and get seated next to the family from hell we have to ride with it, resorting to whatever mitigating measures lie to hand. Spare a thought for the parents – air travel is a stressful business made trebly so when travelling en famille. It is hard not to sympathise with parents trying their best to cope. Less so with an increasing minority of inflight parents who seem to feel that their children are to be indulged at everyone else’s expense and make no effort to control them. For my wife and I, on a recent trip to Hong Kong, our luck ran out. Due to her various health challenges, which include a painful back and leg injury, my wife negotiates airports in a wheelchair. For the same reason we try to reserve early bulkhead seats and once aboard were seated in the window and middle seats of the first row in Economy. Very much infant territory this, but also used for people with disabilities. The row directly behind us was occupied by an Australian couple, mid-thirties with a boy of about four. The boy was excited, bouncy and in full voice and his dad seemed to be encouraging him in what I can only call full Hollywood macho caring-dad mode, all buddy-boy and pal it was. Nothing to settle him though, and after take-off the boy would appear to quieten but then suddenly emit piecing yells and violently kick our seats. Unfortunately the lad sat directly behind

my wife. Half way through the flight somewhere over Kalimantan, the kid let out a particularly shrill bellow kicking our seats so violently the entire row shook. Pained and shocked my wife shouted “stop kicking and shut up!”. All was still and silent behind us for several minutes. The Chinese man sitting in the aisle seat next to me laughed approvingly and gave my wife the thumbs up sign. Then the whispering began as the the wife started winding up the husband. ‘Did you hear what they said” she said. “They told us to Shut up! How dare they? You should do something about it.” After ten minutes of this a head loomed over my seat and said all ominous like, “I’ll be speaking to you when we land”.

The remainder of the flight passed a lot more quietly. Having landed, while people got up to bring down their carry-on luggage, his moment come and having had the better part of two hours to rehearse the father began. “You are a despicable human being”, he announced. I heard him out. The drift was that we were monsters to pick on his little lad and how dare I tell them to shut up; that they had the right to fly without being harassed by the likes of us. He ended every sentence calling me a “sad little man” while looking around to canvass support from nearby passengers. “He didn’t tell your boy to shut up, I did”, said my wife. Ignoring her he continued to address me. When he had done I said it seemed to me I was actually about two inches taller than he was and that part of parenting was to control children appropriately in public. “It’s not easy to control a child” the mother complained.

C/He/I-01 Feb 17

“But that’s rather the point isn’t it?”, I said “neither of you bothered to try”. That said as the doors opened and we began to disembark. Meanwhile the kid had fallen silent, looking wonderingly from his dad’s face to mine as if to say “Is this all about me?”. He got the last word though. Half an hour later in the arrivals hall waiting for my ride into town I sensed a presence. It was the Dad, “you are a despicable human being” he intoned and thus delivered disappeared into the crowd to find Buddy-boy and spouse. An everyday story of cabin folk to be sure and much has been said on the subject on both sides of the divide, most of it constructive apart from intransigents of either stripe. The thing about air travel is its transience. There’s no relationship and no way to make a person in an adjacent seat be nice if they don’t want to or feel guilty about ignoring common sense rules. So say after me: - armrests belong to the unfortunate in the middle seat. - handbag or brief gets stowed under the seat in front, not under yours. - if you’re travelling with kids at least be seen to try to minimise any inconvenience to fellow passengers. They will respond well. Other than that? Put up with what you can’t change with as much grace as you can muster.

A PILL FOR ZIKA? The race is on to develop a vaccine for the Zika virus. But what if a drug that already exists could stop an infection in its tracks? According to new research, at least one medication may already be available and is currently used to treat internal parasites (worms). Other classes of drugs considered for Zika - which treat infections, cancers, and even depression - also showed potential to prevent infection in certain cells tied to fetal defects in pregnant women. Researchers first screened 774 drugs to see if they could protect isolated human cells from a strain of the virus taken from Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Mexico. They eventually narrowed the pool to 24 drugs that showed some ability to block Zika from infecting cells. Currently the selection of potential drugs for use has been narrowed down to three. One of the drugs, sold as Niclosamide, is already on the market as a treatment for tapeworm. But it appears to also have antiviral properties that inhibit Zika from replicating, the researchers reported. Another antiviral drug potentially effective against Zika is PHA-690509. This is a medication that is currently in development that works by interfering with gene expression. And finally, investigators identified a third medication awaiting U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval that doesn’t directly act against Zika, but may be able to protect

C/He/I-09 Nov 16

While all this sounds promising, we still have a way to go before any of these treatments will be generally available in the United States where the medication is being tested and developed. the brain cells of developing fetuses against viral damage. The drug, Emricasan, inhibits a natural process that causes programmed cell death. Using an existing drug that has already been shown to be safe could expedite the research and regulatory process before it can be deployed, although some of the drugs carry extra side effect risks for pregnant women that need to be considered. While these findings are promising, research is preliminary and does not have immediate implications for people wanting to protect themselves from a Zika infection. Zika virus is mainly spread via mosquito bites, however can also be transmitted sexually and typically causes only a few days of fever, aches, and rash, if any symptoms at all. However, when it infects women who are or become pregnant, Zika poses significant risks, as it can cause a birth defect called microcephaly, which results in babies born with undersized heads and underdeveloped brains. When a pregnant woman contracts Zika, it takes some amount of time for the virus to pass from mother to fetus. Scientists are not sure how long they might have, but the hope is that if they hit the jackpot and find a drug that can halt infection - and is safe for pregnant women to take - a pregnant woman could be treated as soon as her infection is discovered, preventing the virus from crossing the placenta or reaching the developing brain. A similar regime is already in place for preventing HIV from passing from mother to fetus. One of the major draw-backs in using intervention treatment, in particular in pregnant women, is that many people with Zika don’t have any symptoms at all (“asymptomatic”) and are unlikely to realize they’re infected. For this reason, a vaccine may ultimately be the best way to prevent fetal exposure to the devastating virus.

So, we can assume it will be even further into the future before this will be available here in Bali. In fact, we are still waiting for the Zika test to be available in Indonesia. We will need some decent diagnostic tools before we even consider a treatment! In the meantime, the best protection is prevention. Make sure that you take extra measures to avoid mosquito bites, especially if you are pregnant. Wearing light colored clothing, avoid wearing perfumes, and applying an effective mosquito repellent (please look at our previous article on effective repellants) will all decrease your risk of contracting Zika as well as other nasty diseases such as Dengue fever and Chikungunya, which are all transmitted by the the Aedes Egypti mosquito.

Solving the Plastic Dilemma Many years ago plastic never existed on Bali. Balinese would eat off of banana leaves and throw these on the ground or into the river, which would do no harm to the environment. With modernization and the huge rise in tourism, plastic became a way of life for the Balinese and tourists who had become accustomed to the convenience of using plastic products. The negative impact this has had on Bali and throughout Indonesia is quite sobering. ‘Refill Bali’ is tackling the issue of plastic bottles, because this is one of the major areas of waste throughout Bali and the world. “The fundamental idea is that people who come here want to keep Bali beautiful. They love the Bali of their dreams,” said Sandro Madaire, one of the founders of Refill Bali. “We give them the opportunity to take responsibility and by joining our free program. All you have to do is visit: www.refillbali.com , to find out about all the locations throughout Bali where you can refill your water bottles. On the street, there are also large stickers that indicate which places are members of ‘Refill Bali’. The business supplying the water may either offer it for free or for a small fee. All information regarding location of the refill stations, prices, etc, is clearly mentioned on the Refill Bali website. “We live in a world where people are disconnected with each other. The sense of community is really low whether it’s at an international level or local. In Bali, communities are working together. When you’re part of a community you are part of something greater than yourself. This can actually feed and help heal you,” said Sandro. How can we translate this into something that’s actionable? According to Sandro we can use the water stations to help people heal themselves by reconnecting people with people. “In the old days before internet, we would go to a café and read testimonials and notes from other travelers in books. Many of these messages were quite personal and strong. These messages stayed with me, because I felt connected with all these travelers from all over the world,” said Sandro. At each station there will be three pockets: in the first pocket will have a supply of pencils, pens and colored markers; in the second pocket there will be slips of paper. People are invited as they refill their water, to share their thoughts, hopes and dreams on paper. These messages will then be put into the third pocket. When new people come they can take a message or write their own message and continue this beautiful flow of reconnection. Finally, at these stations ‘Bali Refill’ will ask people to donate money to IDEP which is a great organization that empowers people to help themselves in the areas of sustainable development - permaculture, disaster preparedness, emergency response and community recovery. Besides the plastic issue, another major environmental issue is that there is less and less water in the ground. The population in Bali was 4.2 million in 2014 but with tourism explosion, the population was actually 10.2 million people in 2014, which is putting a huge stress on the amount of ground water available. IDEP plans to build more wells so that people will have additional water resources throughout Bali. Water is an essential part of our life and wellbeing. Refill Bali is asking for your donations to assist with this important project.

Refill Bali doesn’t receive any funding. Every week they focus on one neighborhood and go to door to door asking businesses if they want to join their program. If the business agrees, then Refill Bali puts a sticker on their business window. “It’s very easy to join Refill Bali: businesses are invited to fill in a very short questionnaire available on www.refillbali.com. There are many advantages for businesses to join our program. One great reason is that there are many conscious travelers who are seeking to eat at restaurants, stay at hotels or participate in other activities with businesses that are committed to sustainability. If those travelers see you are part of Refill Bali and doing your part for environmental sustainability, this will attract more travelers and other people to your business,” said Sandro. Many other businesses have joined Refill Bali such as banks, cafes, galleries and restaurants. All businesses that sign up are listed on Bali Refill’s website map so people know where to find them. What are Refill Bali’s hopes and dreams for the future? They recently obtained the domain name: ‘Refill the world’. They will create the tools, logos, etc., for anyone who wants to duplicate this concept anywhere in the world. Refill Bali is part of an initiative of the green leaders of Bali – a joint group consisting of a variety of businesses such as hotels, restaurants and shops sharing the same vision for a green Bali. Now more than ever we need to come together in our communities and co-create new possibilities to save our planet. Refill Bali is a great step in the right direction. What can you do today that will make a difference in your neighborhood, city or the world? Let’s get started!

Kim Patra has spent the best part of her adult years in Bali. Educated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in South Australia, she is a qualified nurse, midwife and hypnotherapist and a registered member of I.B.I., the Association of Indonesian Midwives. Kim played a crucial role in assisting victims of the Bali Bombing in October 13th, 2002. Her book In The Arms of The Angels (2003) is a poignant account of that searing event through the eyes of a health professional, an expatriate, a woman and a mother. In the same year, she opened the Community Health Care Center in Sanur. Kim is today best known for her “Paradise…In Sickness and in Health” column in the Bali Advertiser.

What are your personal interests? My three grandchildren. Also music, writing and performing. Music has been part of my life since I was 12 years old. I’m currently focused on solo performances and song writing. Mind-body medicine is also an interest outside of my regular allopathic practice.

What kinds work have you done in your life? Hmm.. quite a few. The field of health has always been my main interest. I have worked as a nurse, midwife, medical evacuation escort, teacher (birth class and first aid) as well as a health writer. I have also been a windsurfing instructor, writer, designer and garments manufacturer.

Where are you currently working? I have recently moved my practice to my Sanur home. My children have all moved out, so having an empty house and then paying somebody else for office space doesn’t make sense. So my son’s old bedroom is now my clinic. Most of my clients are pregnant, have babies or young children. I specialize in women’s and children’s health: screening (PAP smears, breast checks, contraception), vaccinations for travel, malaria prevention, as well as some general family health. I see patients during and after their pregnancies and give them advice on the best birth options.

What inspired you to write your column? Back in 2001, when I began my column, I felt the need for the expatriate community and travelers to be aware of health issues on the island, as well as informing the public about available facilities and treatments. There are so many health issues here - from intestinal worms and dengue fever to rabies and Salmonella typhoid - that many expats are completely unaware of.

Was there a specific health issue that particularly bothered you? In those days, one of my passions was raising the awareness regarding Rhesus negative blood types. I had heard too many stories of people, often women giving birth, bleeding to death with no Rh-negative donors available. Many people do not realize that Rhesus negative blood groups average 20%-30% in Caucasian populations, and less than 1% in Asians. This can make it very difficult to find donors.

Do you do home visits? This service seems to have gone full circle. Home visits were a thing of the past, but these days with Bali’s current traffic situation many parents are loath to take to the streets with a newborn or a little one in the car. New parents are the ones that most request home visits.

What are the most critical, life-saving services that a health center can provide? Complete and regular prenatal checks, which will always improve birth outcomes, are extremely important. First aid awareness can also be a lifesaver. The Rhesus negative blood donor register (www.facebook.com/bali.blood) has also saved lives. I think being honest with clients as to what

C/HE/U-18 Jan 17

treatments are available here on the island and when it’s time to pack your bags can also influence the outcome of certain medical conditions.

What are the most common problems that you encounter? I think basically a lack of knowledge about pregnancy, the birth process and birth choices. The major cause of maternal and fetal death on Bali is lack of prenatal care and nutrition as well as anemia that can increase the risk of hemorrhage at birth. Other issues are problems with breastfeeding. Most mothers are only in hospital or birthing centers for a very short time, usually just 24 hours. When they return home, there may be little or no breastfeeding support. I have found that local ladies have a lot of family support, but that expats have little. It’s very tempting when you are tired and frustrated to just switch to formula. The trend now among local people is to view formula milk as superior to breast milk, mostly due to clever marketing. C/He/G-1 March 17

Can hypnosis help during pregnancy and birth? Relaxation can easily be achieved with hypnosis. We use suggestion during hypnosis to alleviate fear. By reducing fear, tension is reduced which in turn reduces pain. Women learn how to self-hypnotize during pregnancy and are able to call upon this ability during labor. Birth with hypnosis is the most popular class at my clinic.

What are the most serious health problems facing the women in Bali today? Female breast and cervical cancers are very serious issues. While there are some great programs out there, reaching women in remote areas is still a big problem. Treatment for cancer is difficult because there is only one radiotherapy machine to serve all of East Indonesia. Childbirth here still has a maternal mortality rate that is higher than we would like to see. Domestic violence and HIV are also huge problems throughout Indonesia.

What are the most critical issues facing the well-being of children on Bali? It depends on which sector of the population you are talking about, but road safety, nutrition, hygiene and recreational drug use are serious problems across all levels of society here.

How may you be contacted? The Community Health Care Center has a face book page. My email address can be found at the end of my column in the Bali Advertiser.

Dinner is better when we eat together! Whether you’re new to Bali, you’ve been here for years or grown up here your whole life; meeting and making friends that won’t skip the country in the next couple of days, weeks, months or years can be a struggle, until now. Introducing the Canggu Supper Club; say goodbye to awkward ‘do you want to hang out’ encounters, and hello to hundreds of new friends over some of Bali’s most scrumptious dishes. Georgina Cooper founded the Supper Club after only a few months of moving to Bali. Being the social butterfly she is, and having the network of friends she does, Georgina wanted everyone to connect with each, enjoy eachothers company, and more importantly, enjoy the taste of Canggu while having a good time. “I know I don’t speak alone when I say I have met some truly wonderful, inspiring people that have really made the biggest difference to my Bali journey - and people that will be friends for life,” says Georgina. “Bali is such an amazing place to live, but I found that some people struggled to make long lasting friends, and that’s when I came up with the idea to build a community around expats to be able to meet and make friends in a safe, friendly environment.” Whether you’re looking to make friends, network, or meet a special someone, the Canggu Supper Club is where we bring

people together at some of the yummiest spots around the Canggu over enlightening and entertaining conversations. And while a Supper Club is traditionally known as a dining establishment that also functions as a social club; bringing people together over delicious meals in new restaurants, this particular club is bringing in a variety of events. Since launching in mid December, the Club has a strong community of around 375 members, and this number is steadily growing. Sekolah Lentera Kasih, High School Students Women’s Health Charity Event (12 March) It is always wonderful to schedule charity events but this is particularly exciting as it is part of a project led by a group of six AS level exam students. This event will count towards their charity project exam requirement which makes it a very special event indeed. This group of students have elected to raise funds for the Bali Pink Ribbon Foundation, a charity dedicated solely to women’s breast health. The purpose of this chosen charity is to raise awareness of breast cancer to the community and the importance of early detection. ‘Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissue of the breasts. The most common cancer diagnosed in women, the second leading cause of death for women and one out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.’ A music DJ based rave is planned. The reason for this event is that is not a common fundraiser and their reason was to be innovative with the type of event organized and in Bali this type of event seemed most appropriate. The group are focusing more on adults at their event as children are not yet facing this issue that faces many women. The goal of the SLK students is to encourage women to see a doctor to make sure they are breast cancer free, as most women get to the critical age and do not have the time, or motivation to catch up with the doctor. The audience the students are trying to seek are adults, ranging in age from around their early twenties to late forties and beyond. For each ticket purchased the money will be donated to Bali Pink Ribbon. A donation box will also be available for guests to add additional funds to the cause should they so wish. VIP tables are also available for groups. This write up is formed from the ideas the group sent to me and it is fantastic to see a group of students come up with such an amazing concept and vision. Axelle Larcher, Maya Southcott, Leon Riupassa, Miguel Faria, Nenad Nestorovik, and Lucas Dos Santos are the group of students who have worked very hard to bring this project to fruition. We wish them the best of luck with their project and look forward to seeing the community support them in their endeavor. DELTA DEWATA

One of the most exquisite elements of personal meditation is the mala - a necklacelike object made from wooden beads, precious stones and other materials, used to harmonise and amplify a meditation practice.

One friend said she thought she was in Singapore, after creating a luncheon spread that included a pomegranate, celeriac, salami, roast beef, cheese from a big selection and freshly baked sourdough bread. Pepito Cafe makes fresh salads and rolls to order - five people for dinner, for under 200,000rp.

Taksu now holds Mala Making classes every Sunday morning from 9am; participants will learn to make their own mala, choosing their own stones and colors, under the careful instruction of an expert Balinese mala maker. The experience ends with a guided meditation, each person using their own completed mala. The program is in high demand, so book ahead: reservations@taksuspa.com or 0361 971 490. Restaurant & Food I llove the idea of Am Amuse Bouche – a small dish to te tease your mouth in preparation for the th feast to come. I’ve used this re recipe both as an a amuse bouche as well w as in larger portions as a s starter soup. It a always gets rave r reviews, as do the t Parmesan crackers we s serve it with.

Asparagus Soup with Rosemary Serves 3-4 Ingredients: - 1 Tbl. olive oil - 1/2 yellow onion, chopped - 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped - 3 spring onions, finely chopped - 25 spears of asparagus, washed and cut in half - 5 bay leaves - 4 branches of fresh rosemary - 1/2 cup white wine or stock - 1/2 cup soup stock - preferably home made - salt and pepper to taste - 1/2 Tbl. lemon juice - 1 tsp. truffle oil - optional, but you can buy it at Dijon - 1 pinch of ground cayenne - parmesan crackers (see recipe: http://baliadvertiser.biz/ parmesan/) make the crackers only about 4cm in diameter Directions: Heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Add the chopped onion, garlic and spring onions, cooking until they are soft and send a heavenly aroma into the kitchen. Add the asparagus, bay leaf, and rosemary. Stir and then add the wine, stock, salt and pepper and cook until the asparagus is soft. Usually I warn about over cooking asparagus but since this will all go into the blender, it’s better if it’s on the soft side. Remove from the heat. Retrieve 3 or 4 asparagus heads to use as garnish and set these aside. Remove the bay leaf and rosemary and put the rest of the contents of the pan into a blender or food processor. Add the lemon juice, truffle oil if you are using it, and the cayenne. Run the blender and taste for salt and pepper before returning the soup to the pan to heat before serving. To serve as an Amuse Bouche - choose very small vessels to put the soup in and decorate with the asparagus head and parmesan crackers. To serve as a first course soup, put in larger bowls and garnish in the same way. Soup’s On!

Update

Tiger Palm has continued the Will Meyrick restaurant tradition of presenting Asian cuisines in their traditional form. It is the 4th restaurant in Bali under the Sarong Group banner [7th in S.E. Asia], and whilst all have similar menus all are at the same time that little bit different. At Tiger Palm the theme has been to showcase all the various ethnic influences on Malaysian cuisine over the centuries by the constant arrival of immigrants from nearby countries, all of whom brought their own cuisines with them. Chinese, Indian, Thai, even the English left some traits behind, merged with the local Malay and the Nonya cuisine that then developed. Situated at a prime location, right front, at Seminyak Village the space is cool and fresh, as is the food. All restaurants in this group seem to showcase a Salmon Salad and Tiger Palm is no different, in fact I almost think that it is the best one so far. The large chunks of fresh salmon are just seared, and served with with pecari pineapple, cucumber, chili mint and dried shrimp with the crisp salmon skin on top [pictured]. Perfect! Alternate starters include Malay chicken “bang bang” salad with yam bean papaya lettuce peanut chili and Vietnamese mint and Cheong fun with prawn and soy sesame oil dressing. The curries are so good I have to return often to try them all; Duck korma with almonds green chili mint coriander and potato, Lamb shoulder simmered with meat curry powder cumin coriander tomato and fresh coriander and the Malaysian Nonya fish curry with coconut milk fish curry powder okra and freshly chopped coriander. Then there are the Malaysian specials; Tamarind Prawns, Nasi Lemak and Teo Chow Duck Rice. An Asian feast! Sayuri is the latest vegetarian/raw food restaurant to appear in Ubud. Unlike many of the others this one seems well patronised. It is found at the beginning of Jln. Sukma, the old home for Bali’s first and biggest Jazz Café for many years, the road sometimes referred to as Jln. Tebesaya. They claim that all their dishes consist of only plant based Vegan produce and that all are Gluten Free (except for the items with soy-sauce). All the extracts are raw, organic & high ‘vibrational’, and all the essential oils are organic, high ‘vibrational’ & food grade. From 11.00 a.m. they offer a Meal of the Day for Rp. 59,000, Mondays [raw zucchini pasta], Tuesdays [Indian masala roll], Wednesdays [zucchini lasagna], Thursdays [their own version of Pad Thai; coconut + zucchini noodle with sweet tamarind sauce, almond butter, chili, veggies, coconut sprinkle], Fridays [raw seeded crust pizza], Saturdays [falafel wrap] and on Sundays their Mexican Lasagna.

Warung Nagoya is Japanese. Situated on a back road in Sanur [Jln. Batur Sari] it was an interesting discovery. The surprise was the seemingly always full street front car parking at meal times, always a sign of good value and constant repeat guests. The menu prices provided many answers, it is very budget priced for what can be an expensive cuisine. Pure Japanese it has no ‘international’ additives, but also with limited explanation for the first timer. Edamame is the healthy way to start any meal, alternately there is Aona Itame or Salty Cabbage. Chicken features in many dishes. It can be stir fried [Nanban, Katsu or Tonkatsu] or grilled [Yakitori, Ysukune or Teryaki]. Pork is stir fried with ginger and they also offer two Nagoya specialties, Tenmusu & Doteni. Tenmusu are rice balls [sushi rice] that are stuffed with a shrimp fritter [tempuri] and half wrapped in nori seaweed. Doteni are for the more adventurous, it is a rich dish with Hatcho miso incorporating ingredients like beef tendon, beef intestines and daikon radish. The meat is simmered for a long time, it is well balanced with the rich miso. Doteni is a regular dish on the menus of Nagoya izakaya.

Coffee ‘n’ Oven, is an unusual name for an interesting bakery and café found on Jln Pantai Berawa, Canggu. Big breakfasts start the day at 7.00 a.m. with a number of healthy options such as their special; crisp sourdough bread with broccoli pesto, selection of greens, roasted bacon strips, poached eggs, mushrooms and carrot curls. All the other breakfast offerings come with their famous bread basket. Lunch can be an interesting salad [beetroot marinated with olive oil and fresh herbs, wild rucola, feta cheese, oranges and parsley, with olive and lime dressing], a healthy burger [chicken & carrot daiquiri burger] or a hot meal [chicken steaks].

Frestro was an interesting newcomer to the Bali dining scene late last year. The menu, and its kitchen production, has been set up by none other than Mandif Warokka, one of Indonesia’s most high profile chefs. Frestro is situated on Jln. Petitenget, which now carries the overflow from the original Eat Street on what was once called Jln. Laksmana. It has a slightly confusing menu, a Gourmet Brunch [8.00 till 4.00] and a separate Lunch Menu [11.00 to 4.00]. The Bowls are available anytime; Island Breeze of rolled oats, pineapple, banana, young coconut, caramelized cashew and honey, or an Acai Bowl dessicated coconut, granola, mixed berries and dragon fruit. The Gourmet dishes include Rose-infused Watermelon Salad, Ricotta Hot Cakes with honeycomb butter, Orange Currant Scones and a very special Scotch Egg with melted leeks, Welsh rarebit, beef bacon, tahini, cauliflower puree and asparagus. The lunch menu offers raw dishes [Yellow fin tuna on melba toast, Aged Charolais beef with oba leaves, watercress, pear & mustard], pasta [Capellini with smoked tongue, green tomato, garlic, chilli, parsley & lemon] and some that are more substantial; a spicy Mediterranean Lamb Soup with meat from the shoulder, lentils, chickpeas, saffron, coriander and lime, a Wrap of Smoked Salmon, or a Black Angus Cheeseburger. Cascades @ The Viceroy have established a tradition of bringing many of the great chefs of the world to Bali as guest chefs. That this is appreciated by the foodies of Bali is borne out by these events always reaching their maximum 60 persons reservation well before the event date. So here is some advance warning of the 1st such event for 2017. The guest chef will be Soenil Bahadoer, owner/chef at 2 star Guide Michelin restaurant De Lindehof, located in Nuenen, The Netherlands. It will be a 6 course wine-paired degustation, lunch Thursday April 27, and dinner Friday April 28. It is surprising to learn that Soenil, of Surinam descent, but raised in The Netherlands, features Rendang as his personal specialty at De Lindehof amongst the foie gras, caviar, wagyu, etc. For me the Beef Cheek Rendang I had at CasCades last year, prepared by their exec chef Nick Vanderbeeken was not only the best Rendang I have ever had but also up there as one of the greatest dishes I have ever experienced.

29 A Spicy Date UBUD is the centre of much heritage and tradition in Bali. This remains its principal charm, which is offset only by its other role as a testing ground for the skills – or lack of these – of drivers of huge buses that service the growing Chinese takeaway trade. The narrow streets of Aum Central are believed by package tour operators and entrepreneurial bus companies to be ideally suited to big vehicles. Fortunately such impediments are only spasmodic. It mightn’t seem that this is the case when you’re caught in one of the regular hour-long crawls around the Monkey Forest-Raya Ubud-Hanoman horror, or the similar stopstart treks up from Lod Tunduh, but it would be churlish and quite wrong to assert that shemozzle is a round-the-clock affair. The roads are generally quite trafficable between midnight and 6am. Ubud is also Festival Central. It’s home to the Writers and Readers Festival (the 14th, this year, is from Oct. 25-29) and Bali Spirit Festival (Mar. 19-26), and many other celebrations, especially those of the highly favoured navelgazing variety. Some of these are delightfully boutique affairs where deep and meaningful navel gazing takes on an almost personal perspective. There’s a lot to be said for navel gazing, if this is conducted with an open mind. Janet DeNeefe’s writers’ festival has gone from strength to strength since its first rendition, which was held as a healing process after the first Bali bombing in 2002. A little while ago it incorporated a culinary element to its programming, which added pedas (spice) to panas (heat). Some wag at the time defined this as fragrant rice meets flagrant lies. The full degustation of the Ubud Food Festival grew from this early appetiser. This year’s festival is themed Every Flavour is a Story. DeNeefe tells us it is designed to reflect the rich cultural texts that underpin the diverse culinary traditions of the archipelago. Last year’s event attracted around 8000 international visitors, according to the organisers, which naturally provided a spin-off benefit for local traders and accommodation providers. All good. There’s a narrative attached to any set of food traditions, of course, and Indonesia’s are richer than many, weaving stories that depict the journey your food has taken from farmer’s plots and livestock owners to the dinner table. UFF, which bills itself as Indonesia’s biggest culinary festival, has invited leading aficionados of the genre to share their insights and kitchen secrets. Leading restaurateurs, food manufacturers, and producers, food writers and gourmands will be on hand to spread the love. During the three-day event, visitors will be able to join forums, cooking demonstrations, workshops, special events, food markets, musical performances and film showings. Among those down to attend are Tasia and Gracia Seger known as the Spice Sisters, who recently won a nationwide cooking contest in Australia; Professor Winarno, an expert on tempe; and the “jungle chef” of Papua, Charles Toto, who will introduce unique dishes made from the produce and heritage of Indonesia’s easternmost province. There’s an international element as well. This year Bo Songvisava and Dylan Jones are down to appear. Their Bo.lan Restaurant in Bangkok is among the best 50 restaurants in Asia listed by S. Pellegrino & Acqua Panna. They will feature in a special street food event together with Indonesian cooking legend Will Meyrick at his Ubud eatery Hujan Locale. Also back this year will be the Kitchen Stage presenting Indonesian language cooking demonstrations. Look for appearances by Made Runatha and Made Januar from MOKSA; Chef Made Lugra from The Ayung Resorts; and Made Surjaya from The Standing Stones. Full details are available at www.ubudfoodfestival.com.

Collectors’ Items There’s a lot of rubbish in Bali. It is a constant problem that becomes most foully evident when it rains and all the stuff everyone’s dumped out of sight – and sometimes just out of olfactory range – in previously dry watercourses gets flushed out into the sea and ends up on the beaches. Fighting pollution on the beaches is also a constant problem. Many are recruited to the forces deployed against this threat, by means of regular clean-ups and their commitment to public voluntary service is commendable. It’s true of course that the new mass market tourists, from China, along with the increased Indonesian component and the growing Indian one, are less fretful about rubbish than the western tourists who hitherto have been the preferred market. But this is not an excuse to continue in the false belief that rubbish is not really a problem. The dengue figures alone prove that, as well as the increase in rats that these days, due to other shortsighted policies, are preyed upon by fewer feral dogs. There is, too, a lot of rubbish talked about rubbish. Those who might assert that no one cares should

HECTOR’S study the efforts made by the Denpasar city authorities to implement workable local rubbish collection policies, fund these, and enforce the law concerning them. A very good rule is always credit where credit is due.

Denpasar is a city of more than three-quarters of a million people, in a densely settled and therefore more easily administered area, with a revenue base that is beginning to be workable, and an administration that is keen to create and sustain liveability. Other areas of Bali do not have that civic benefit, the services of broadly educated administrators, or the resources to fund effective waste collection and disposal. That, like so much else here, remains a work in progress. This element of life in Bali needs to be understood by critics who briefly occupy plush villas and wrinkle their noses at the despoiled environment beyond their privileged walls.

Catch a Chill The Diary is just back home from a brief visit to that other place, the big island to our south where, to quote a now venerable pop song, women glow and men chunder, and Vegemite sandwiches are all the rage. So it’s really good to be home, for all sorts of reasons, not least for the reliability of warmth as a constant factor in Bali’s climate. Our flit this time took us to the southwest corner of Western Australia. A good friend who lives in Bali’s southern suburb was celebrating an important birthday and we had to be there. It was a lovely show, at a surf lifesaving club on Perth’s fantastic beachfront. It was hot in Perth. Then we went further south, into the karri forest country that is the ancestral territory of the Distaff, and hit one of those quirks of climate that make life in that part of the world so interesting. Rain’s OK – we’re used to that in Bali. But if we ever want thermometer readings in the teens we can trip up to Kintamani or Bedugul and sample these very briefly before getting back in the car and returning speedily to lower altitude and higher temperatures. It’s summer in the great southern land. But for some reason, Murphy’s Climatic Law has always followed us on our travels. It’s most unfair.

C/BT/I-15 Feb 17

Water Rites The unusually heavy rains of this year’s strong La Niña wet season will have partly replenished Bali’s groundwater reserves, which is a good thing. But these reserves have been so heavily plundered by over-use and shockingly absent planning and regulation that it would take several successive La Niña events to make any noticeable difference. The reality of global climate cycles is that nature will not provide that benefit. The girl child’s drought-fixated brother El Niño will inevitably return. Conservation and responsible use – enforced by both law and the effectiveness of price signals on usage – are the only way to prevent terminal decline. There are of course some things humans can do to build sustainable water resources. They could fix deficient reticulation systems, for example, though that seems to be a bridge too far under water for Bali’s authorities at the moment. Innovative science can help, where perennial and pervasive losses from leakage and thievery won’t. So it was good to see the IDEP Foundation unveil a recharge solution on Feb. 27 designed to counter Bali’s water crisis. It did so by means of a media launch of its SaveBaliWater project, a pilot recharge well as part of a longer-term solution to urgently restore rapidly depleting aquifers, many of which are now being invaded by salt water because of the depletion of the water table. It’s apt that this is the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. A network of 136 recharge wells will be installed across Bali, harvesting water to balance consumption. The Bali Water Protection program involves educational programs in 132 schools located along rivers, and a media campaign aimed at raising public awareness for water preservation in the province. The pilot program is sponsored by Five Elements, a luxury wellness resort. As IDEP Executive Director Ade Andreawan says, it is vital that Bali’s business communities offer strong support for the program. The Apulkat Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree! ‘Dear Dr. Kris, Saw an article by you. Thanks for sharing that. Would it be possible for you to share as to what is the best time/ month to start germination of avocado seeds in Indonesia? Thanks in anticipation. Dr Karan Singh, Jakarta.’ Avocado = Apulkat in Bahasa Indonesia. The avocado tree is a plant that will usually do well without too much human intervention. It can easily be grown from the large seed that comes with the fruit. Deciding on when to plant depends on how much care you are willing to give your plant, and the conditions that it is growing in. The basic requirements for any seed to germinate are water, temperature (warmth), and a suitable growing medium - such as soil. In a tropical climate, the temperature needs of the avocado seed are easily met at any time of the year - all you need to do is just add soil and water.

can better control the growing conditions (soil + sunlight). Consider positioning, it’s very important for any plant that you decide to grow. For best results, a seedling will prefer protection from strong winds, harsh heat and direct all day sun. The leaves of an avocado seedling can easily become burnt if over exposed to direct sun or windy conditions.

For this reason, transplanting from pot to ground may be advantageous during the wet season, but once the tree has established it will be able to survive through the seasons on its own. Whether germinating in a pot or direct into the garden, ensure a healthy soil, appropriate watering, filtered light when young and direct sun when mature. When the plant reaches 2-3 feet in height, prune the top set of leaves and move it to a sunny position to encourage bushy growth and denser foliage.

The more I think about growing plants, the more confused I get, because for the first time it has occurred to me, ‘who’s really doing all of the growing here?’

Are you planting the seed into a pot or sowing direct into the ground? If you are growing in a pot it shouldn’t matter what month or what time of year, just supply adequate moisture. Water every day until the seed germinates and then maintain water once or twice a week after that. When it rains, you won’t need to water at all! If you are sowing direct into the ground, it’s a good idea to do so in the wet season because the high levels of rainfall and humidity will ensure that your seedling is well hydrated. Getting nature to do the work for you is not only efficient, but it will also give you time to ponder other things (see rant above). If sowing direct to the garden during the dry season you will have to ensure that you water regularly. By using pots, you

But remember this, it needn’t have to go into the ground at all!

The leaf margins will become dry, brown and shrivelled. Think about the design of its reproductive process within the natural Avocado trees make attractive pot plants, the lush green environment. The fruit drops to the ground, with the seed foliage can be trimmed and shaped into a bush. Of course, it’s unlikely to fruit, but the leaves have culinary uses on their sprouting under the protection of the shaded canopy. own. If space is at a premium or if you live in an apartment Remember the old saying the apulkat doesn’t fall far from the consider growing potted avocado plants. tree! When growing any sort of plant to get the best results try to replicate the conditions as you would find them in nature. The main advantage of germinating the seed in place in the A seedling in a pot can easily be moved around to find the ground is that it reduces transplant shock. Avocado trees are ideal shaded spot, or you could even start them off indoors robust, so this shouldn’t be a huge issue. Growth may lag but that’s not so natural after all…… Now I’m getting confused for a few weeks/months but it will settle reasonably quickly if transplanted correctly with plenty of water - before and after. all over again!

So, I would say that any time is the ideal time! I occasionally find avocado seedlings growing out of my compost. Sometimes I come across a rogue seed that has managed to roll itself away and sprout above the ground – after all how do you think they grow out in the wild?

The answer to that question could fill my next article, or perhaps even inspire a new branch of philosophy within itself! End of rant. I digress.

invade and destroy structures both above and below ground. So be very careful. Don’t plant too close to houses, paving, driveways and swimming pools. The roots can easily find their way into sewer lines and other underground piping.

Will my tree ever bear fruit? Seedlings can usually take anywhere from five to ten years to bear fruit, but it all depends on the suitability of growing conditions. Sometimes they can begin to set fruit after three or four years. In the interim harvest the leaves and use them If you are planning on improving your soil, or haven’t decided in your cooking or to make a healthy cleansing tea. exactly where in the garden you would like it to grow, with a pot you can start the plant so that it is at an advanced stage by the time you have amended your soil or decided on its final location. If you sow direct into the ground be aware that an avocado tree will become quite large so you must be confident about whether, or not the final position is appropriate. You’d be surprised at how quickly an avocado seed can develop into an almighty tree - sometimes within just a few years. Avoid planting too close to structures, and buildings, be aware that the tree can grow large very quickly, sometimes up to 15 meters depending on the variety. You will also need to be careful of the root system which can

The Frugal Balinist *Stormy weather: March-April is the beginning of Bali’s windy season (musim cuaca badai). Start looking for a good roofer (tukang atap) who are not always that easy to find. Waterproofing roofs is an art. Don’t let just anybody climb on your roof lest they cause damage. Charging Rp400,000 in the Denpasar/Kuta/ Legian area and Rp200,000 in the outer districts, they often need special equipment (tall ladders, cherry pickers, ropes, etc.) to do their work. High winds and rain drive leaves and organic debris up under ceramic tiles (genteng), degrading the underlayment and causing leaks. Now that the weather is a little drier, it’s time to top dangerous trees; trim branches over hanging your house; waterproof the top of walls where the roof meets the wall; remove and replace broken and badly placed interlocking tiles; replace battens (ring); fasten rubber sheets (talang karet) on those parts of roof that get torrents of water from gutters or valleys in order to protect tiles and the woven bamboo layer (bedek) underneath. *Money tips. Consumer Reports that with the exception of warranties on phones and laptops, which cover everything (including loss and dropping), extended warranties are a waste of money. *Call your credit card company’s customer-service to shift the due date on your credit card so that your payment can be made on 1st of the month (to make pay date easier to remember), a date farther from another card’s due date or a due date on the same date as your retirement payment comes in. *Homestays in Ubud offer rooms for rent with one or two beds for Rp300,000 while hostels like Wayan’s, No Problem, Puji, Joker, Ons, etc. (check www. hostelworld.com) have up to 10 beds per room but charge only Rp75,000Rp100,000 per bed per night. *Wait to buy a 2nd hand motorcycle until Galungan in April when the Balinese will be feeling the money pinch enough to sell their nearly new bikes. *”He who has the gold makes the rules.”

*Printing is a steal. Business cards at a toko cetak cost as little as Rp50,000/100 to print (or Rp35,000/100 if you order two boxes) either in color or black and white. Letterhead is Rp60,000/500 sheets for one color; for each additional color (up to 3 colors) add Rp30,000 (even though a 500-sheet ream of paper alone costs around Rp25,000!) Envelopes are Rp40,000 per box of 100-110 envelopes. All these prices include “setting” which means layout and even tracing and reproducing your original artwork. Before finalizing your order, be sure to check the text and art to avoid errors and misspellings. Remind the clerk to save the art for reprints or have them copy it on a flash disk so you can generate your own art with CAD software. Most shops can also produce invitations, courtesy cards, imprinted gift boxes and souvenirs like mugs, toys, handicrafts, etc. One such multi-service shop is Balimalio, Jl. Ngurah Rai 55, Banjar Anyar, Kediri, hp 0819 3119 7972, email: balimalio1272@gmail.com.

*Tech tips. The side of the metal USB connector with the line down the middle is the bottom. *Leaving your phone plugged in all night doesn’t harm your battery, the New York Times reported 03Feb17. *Get a company’s customerservice contact information, incl. phone, 800 numbers, website, opening hours and email addresses by visiting www. contacthelp.com that maintains a complete up-to-date database of companies. *Laptops are great when you’re on the road but more powerful desktops are half the price. *Tie a knot in your left earbud cord, so you don’t have to hunt for the tiny L and R on the buds.

*Bake your own. In order to cut back on the Rp200,000 per month we spend on roti (bread) at Bali Buda (the best we’ve found!), we’ve started making our own bread. Quality flour – difficult and expensive to come by in Bali - is the key. For a hearty, full-flavored bread, we mix the “Taj Mahal” imported brand (Rp37,500/2 kg) of flour we buy at the India store (Jl. Iman Bonjol, Denpasar) with Segitiga Biru Premium flour (Rp10,000/kg) available at any supermarket or sizeable market. A good flour mixer and the right feel for the dough are all you need. Success in baking bread, croissants and scones also depends on room temperature and humidity. After kneading, let the dough rise but keep it covered if it’s too cool in the house. Alamboga (http://www. alamboga.com) sells quality whole meal flour for Rp26,400/kg as well as many other imported flours such as Buckwheat, Quinoa, Bourghul, Semolina.

*Life hacks. Use a toothpick or paper clip at the end of packing tape to keep from trying to find it if it gets lost in the roll. *Razor blades will last much longer if you dip them in alcohol after each shave. *Smooth wet slivers of soap into a bigger wet bar of soap to save on soap. *Wipe your paint brush on a strip of duct tape taped across the paint can opening to keep rim and outside of the can free of paint. *If you’ve gone through the very steep training curve training a guy on how to maintain your pool, hang on to him for dear life. *Set your water heater thermostat to around 120 degrees F. (48.9 C.) to lower gas/electric bill; also turn the temperature way down before going on vacation. *Instantly sharpen scissors by cutting through a sheet of sandpaper. *Drill several air holes out of sight in the back of your plastic trash can to keep the plastic bag liner from riding up the trash can. *Use a can opener to open the hard clear blister packaging, exactly as if you’re opening a can. *Use a needle nose pliers to unscrew a broken jagged lightbulb base out of its socket. *If you use an absentee builder your chances of getting a good structure are minimal, but less so if you go every day to the work site and take part in the process and are able to control what happens.

*Siteng Concentrated Seaweed. This potent, eco-friendly organic liquid compost, when diluted to 1:1000 and sprayed before watering on rice, corn, chili, soy bean and watermelon fields, prepares the soil for planting. Do not spray on fields after watering (also don’t introduce into fishponds as it will kill fish). For fruit trees, wood trees, garden trees, salak, vegetables, chocolate, durian, coconut, decorative plants and orchids, spray a dilution of 1:500 on the top of the root zone. For even more intensive fertilizer, use a dilution of 1:100. This nutritious solution is especially effective in land that can no longer be farmed because of soil depletion caused by over use, erosion or excessive chemical fertilizer. Buy for Rp95,000/liter at ecoSmart HUB, P.T. Little Tree, Jl. Sunset Road 1, tel. 0361-752-133.

Local News Judge Declines to Give Grandmother Custody of Heather Mack’s Girl A Cook County judge declined to rule Friday on whether the paternal grandmother of Heather Mack’s child could get custody of the girl, who is soon turning 2. Despite the ruling, Kia Walker said she will continue to fight to bring the child back to the U.S. Mack’s daughter, Stella Schaefer, was born in a prison in Bali, Indonesia, where Mack is serving a 10-year sentence for her role in the murder of her mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack. Stella’s father, Tommy Schaefer, is serving an 18-year sentence for bludgeoning von Wiese-Mack to death then stuffing her body in a suitcase at a luxury hotel in Bali in 2014. Under Indonesian law, Stella could remain with her mother in prison until the age of 2. Her birthday is March 17. Schaefer’s mother had asked a judge handling a civil case over von Wiese-Mack’s $1.5 million estate to grant her custody of Stella. But at a hearing Friday in Cook County, Judge Neil Cohen said he is charged with determining whether Mack is responsible for her mother’s death for the purposes of determining if Mack can inherit her mother’s $1.56 million estate. “I’m not going to decide a thing about Stella,” Cohen told lawyers for Walker. “She’s merely damage from this, collateral damage. I’m deciding whether Heather can take” her mother’s estate. Outside the courtroom, Walker said she would file a new petition for custody of Stella in probate court within hours and had not given up her bid to bring Stella home. “I may be a grandmother, and I don’t have a lot of rights,” she said. “But I can be a voice for my granddaughter.” Vanessa Favia, Mack’s lawyer, said a local family in Bali is willing to care for Stella while Heather finishes her sentence. “She wants her to stay in Bali,” Favia said. Falling Tree Kills Two Motorists in North Bali Following a warning published in early February 2017 by Balidiscovery.com of the dangers posed by falling trees during the current rainy and windy weather conditions, a tree has fallen onto a small pickup truck traveling from Denpasar to Singaraja at Peneng Banjar, Baturiti, Tabanan on Thursday, February 12, 2017. Metrobali.com said that a Suar Tree toppled onto the busy roadway sticking the cab of the pickup truck killing both the driver and passenger on the spot. Dead are the driver, Agus Tiilul (28), and his passenger, Wahyu Widodo (35), both men from Jember, East Java. Police says heavy rains had rendered the soil on the roadside labile, permitting the tree that fell on the truck to become uprooted and fall onto the road. [balidiscovery.com February 17, 2017]

Bali Judged Best Island for 12th Successive Year The DestinAsian Readers Choice Award (RCA) 2017 was bestowed on Bali for being named the best island destination for the 12th consecutive year.”We laud the award given in Singapore on February 15, 2017,” Deputy for International Marketing Development of the Ministry of Tourism I Gde Pitana stated here on Thursday. The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism was invited to receive the award. DestinAsian had implemented an open voting system for over 12 years and has bestowed awards based on the readers choice. [ANTARA News February 16, 2017] Uber Taxi Driver Beaten by Angry Crowd in Ubud

The seven deaths at Songan were comprised of 5 adults, one child and a one-year-old infant. Meanwhile, two teenage boys, aged 17 and 14, suffered serious injuries requiring hospitalization in Bangli. A retaining wall collapsed sending mud onto 5 homes situated in the village. Two of the five homes were completely leveled by the landslide with the remaining three buildings suffering significant damage.

The driver of an Uber Taxi was set upon by a mob and badly beaten on Jalan Pengosekan in Ubud, Bali on Sunday, February 12, 2017. The driver, Peter Sunarto (31), suffered bruises about his head and face as the result of the beating. Sunarto had received a ride order over the Uber online transportation application from a hotel on Jalan Hanoman in Ubud at about 4:20 pm when, while waiting for his passenger to appear, more than 10 people attacked him while parked at a nearby minimarket.

In addition to the seven killed in the mudslide, two others suffered serious injuries with seven more light wounds. The dead and injured were all evacuated from the scene by 9:00 am on Friday morning. The landslide also closed access roads to the village and surrounding areas. Later the same morning, two additional landslides took place at the villages of Awan and Sukawana. At Awan four people lost their lives while one person died in the village of Sukawana. In Awan 3 adults and one ten-year-old girl were killed. The landslide in Sukawana resulted in one adult death and serious injuries to a child.

According to Balipost.com, the mob asked Sunarto if he was an Uber driver.Frightened for his safety, Sunarto told the mob that he was not an Uber driver but merely waiting for a friend. The men then drag him from the car and beat him. The man later reported the attack to the Ubud Police precinct.

Four days after the initial landslide, the body of a 70-year-old woman was discovered buried in mud and rubble at the village of Subaya in Bangli bringing the total death count to 13 people. [www.balidiscovery.com February 12, 2017]

Police are investigating the case and have called members of the local taxi drivers group working in the Jalan Pengosekan area. Police say an agreement is in place preventing online taxi operators from working in the Ubud area. Police continue to try to track down those responsible for the criminal assault on the taxi driver. American Expatriate Paul Hoffman in Police Custody in Connection with Convenience Store Robbery A 57-year-old American expatriate, Paul Anthony Hoffman, is in police custody after being apprehended on Thursday, February 16, 2017, in connection with the robbery of a convenience store on Jalan Sunset in Kuta. With a listed address in Bali on Jalan Tunggak Bingin Block J in Sanur, police say Hoffman entered the store on Thursday, February 9, 2017, wearing a helmet and facemask and driving a Honda motorcycle with concealed license plates. Ostensibly making a selection from the chocolate counter, Hoffman allegedly approached the cashier who he threatened at knife point before making an escape with only Rp. 176,000. As reported by Tribun-Bali and a number of local newspapers, based on information provided by the store clerk and the indication that the thief was a foreigner police were able to make an arrest in the case. Two days later, police on patrol in Kuta saw a man matching the description of the thief and placed him under surveillance. Following Hoffman to the man’s temporary residence on Jalan Camplung Tanduk in Seminyak, police stopped the American and searched him where they found a knife resembling that used in the robbery in the man’s right trouser package. Police also seized the man’s passport and clothing articles that matched the description of those worn in the robbery. Bali Post reports that police suspect that Hoffman, who told police that he was once wealthy but had fallen on hard times, may be connected with as many as 6 robberies in Bali. Search and rescue workers announced that the Frenchman’s body was recovered at 9:30 am on Friday morning at a depth of 15-meters not far from the area in which the tourist went missing. Nicolas was visiting the Selong Belank beach to dive with two friends, accompanied by two guides and a local fisherman. The men were on a spearfishing expeditions at the time of the incident. [www.balidiscovery.com February 17, 2017] Malaysian Arrested at Bali Airport with Meth Hidden in Tissue A Malaysian man has been taken into custody by Bali narcotics agents and customs officers at Ngurah Rai International Airport. The Malaysian, identified in reports by initials SBMS, 39, came to Bali on Feb. 4 with AirAsia flight AK 374. It turns out the guy apparently didn’t do the best job of concealing his meth. After landing, 0.11 grams of methamphetamine stored in a clear glass pipe, wrapped in white tissue, was allegedly found with SBMS. Head of the Bali division of the National Narcotics Agency, Brig. Gen. Putu Gede Suastawa said the Malaysian only brought the meth to Bali for personal use, apparently not for distribution. “He (SBMS) is a lone actor, only a user,” Suastawa said on Monday, as quoted by Tribun Bali. Oz Bali, Part I: Services and Organizations For many Balinese, Australians are like family. The relationship between Bali and Australia has been a long love affair. Bali has over 30 cricket clubs, fish & chips and meat pie shops and imported Australian steaks are as authentic as they are in Old Country. The great Australian “Schoolies” invasion of high school graduates in late November is accompanied by vigilante groups charged with protecting the youths from harm. Australian Bikie gangs have chapters in Bali. The study of the Indonesian language remains popular in Australian high schools. Many high Indonesian officials took their degrees from Australian institutions. Miners fly from Western Australia to Bali after their shifts ends, returning in time for their next shift. With one million plus Australians visiting each year, it seems that every Australian has fallen in love at some stage during a holiday in Bali. Thousands of self-funded Australians over 55 years old live in Bali on old age pensions by obtaining retirement visas, renewable every year, returning to Australia only for medical checkups. At least nine NGOs/CSR Australianrelated social organizations, charities and programs on Bali have been founded by Australians or have a strong Australian link. The Australian Consortium for In-Country Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) assists foreign students to study in Indonesian universities. Many Australians contribute to other NGOs/civil society groups around Bali, including 10 government funded Australian volunteers working in Bali at any one time. The Coral Triangle Centre (coraltrianglecenter. org ) in Sanur is one such NGO with Australian volunteers.

For each bottle that is purchased by donors, the cost of education materials to a student in Bali is provided. Each participating school also receives a water stand so that canteens can sell water refills to students instead of water in plastic packaging. *The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is an Australiancreated book event with the aim of showcasing literary works of Bali and Indonesia. Australia is a huge bookreading country and love literary events. Staff includes Australian consultants who work alongside local staff to upgrade their skills. At the 2017 event, Australians made up about 45% of the ticket holders and 27% of the speakers and moderators. The Grocer & Grind (Jl. Kayu Jati 3X, Kerobokan, tel. 0361730-418) specialize in steaks and OZ Burgers with 100% beef patties. Biku (Jl. Raya Petitenget 888, Kerobokan, tel. 0361857-0888) serves authentic meat pies. At Temple Café (Jl. Raya Candi Dasa, Candi Dasa, tel. 0363-41629), the most popular dish is Vegemite on Toast. A thick near-black paste, Vegemite is a quintessential Australian food much loved by generations of Aussies.
