Merdeka Challenge Golf Tournament (19 August) Merdeka or independence as it is translated to English. It is derived from Sanskrit meaning ‘rich, prosperous and powerful’ a more thorough definition of Indonesia having gained independence from the Dutch in 1945. Fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in the mind. Habits, if not resisted, soon become necessity.

The Case for Having a VPN If you live in Bali, chances are you may use a public Internet source for working, checking social media accounts, sending email or just surfing the net. If you’re struggling to get that elusive high-speed fiber optic connection that the provider keeps promising will be available in your street sometime soon, and hanging out at your favorite café to work in the meantime, you may be vulnerable to being hacked or electronically spied on if you use shared Wi-Fi. Even fee-paying coworking spaces may not be secure. However, VPNs offer a quick and easy solution and provide peace of mind when using public Wi-Fi. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. This is a service for which you pay a monthly or annual fee – in some cases, just a few dollars per month. A VPN service throws a cloak of invisibility over you when are online. Every time you log onto the Internet through your laptop or any mobile device, the VPN is activated (or you activate it) and it encrypts and hides your activity online. In essence, you are logging into your own private network, even while you’re on a public network. VPN has been described as a ‘private tunnel’ between your device or laptop and a server operated by the VPN service, into which all user activity enters and is shielded from online scrutiny and hacking. Anyone checking on your activity online – governments, Internet service providers, hackers – not only can’t see what you are doing, but also usually can’t even detect who you are and where you are based in real life. This means that under the protection of a VPN service, you can confidently bank online, send sensitive financial or other data (i.e., us credit cards to make an online purchase) or just access sites you don’t want listed in your browser history. Increasing numbers of people are experiencing social media hacking where their Facebook account is hijacked to send viruses or spam to their contacts. Subscribing to a VPN can end any fear of your social media accounts being hacked. Not to mention your bank account. In addition to cloaking your activity online, VPNs manipulate your IP address, making it appear that you are using a different location than the one in which you are actually based. Your IP, or Internet Protocol, address is a numerical tag that uniquely identifies any computer or mobile device that accesses the Internet and also identifies the country from which you are accessing the Internet. The benefit of other sites not being able to identify where you are based, if you’re using a VPN, is that you can access country-specific sites and programming that may not be available where you are actually based geographically. Many people use VPN services to access NetFlix, the moviestreaming site, which is reserved for US-based users, BBC’s iPlayer, which is UK-based or boards and subscription services that are designed for local use only. Keep in mind that running a VPN can slow your Internet speed between 25-50%, so you are trading convenience for safety. Personally, I feel that’s a completely acceptable

trade-off. I’ve had both my Facebook and email accounts hacked in the past, so going forward, I’m happy to have peace of mind and a slower Internet connection. While there are free VPN services available, they are often not completely reliable and may even be questionable as to the safety they offer. Shell out a few dollars for an annual or monthly subscription and get a trusted VPN provider. C/G/G-9 Nov. 16

Choosing a VPN Service Currently, there are dozens of VPN services to choose from. How do you pick the one that’s best for you? Ask the experts. PCWorld recently offered a review of their pick of the best VPNs out there. PCWorld’s choice for best overall VPN service is Mullvad (https://www.mullvad.net). The site calls Mullvad the ‘Swiss bank account of VPNs.’ Mullvad gives you a unique account number, which you use every time you log in. They maintain their own servers on other providers. PCWorld describes their services as ‘bare bones’ – Mullvad doesn’t offer an auto-connect when you log onto a public Wi-Fi, so you need to manually log into your account. Mullvad does have a ‘kill switch’ so if you lose your VPN connection while you’re on the internet, the service will automatically block your internet connection until service is restored. Mullvad claims that they don’t log user IP addresses or user traffic, so your complete privacy is maintained. The Mullvad VPN service currently costs USD $67.00 per year, or USD$5.60 per month. PCWorld’s second choice is CyberGhost (https://www.cyberghostvpn.com/en_us). This site consistently has faster Internet speeds than most other VPNs and also offers good privacy and anonymity to users. CyberGhost provides a very user-friendly user interface that lets you choose the function you need each time you access the VPN: general web browsing, protecting a frequently-used internet connection, unlocking geo-restricted sites or streaming sites anonymously. The site also claims that they don’t log user IP addresses or user traffic. CyberGhost costs USD $30-40 annually. If you are using a VPN specifically to access Netflix, PCWorld recommends NordVPN (https://nordvpn.com). Netflix has started to block many VPNs but NordVPN is one service that can still access Netflix from anywhere in the world. NordVPN costs USD$69 annually. Do your own research and find other options for VPN providers based on the attributes you need most when you are online. But whichever VPN service you ultimately choose, just get one and make sure you’re protected online.

Cutting Edge Kids Clothes Come to the Gu! Angela Tracy, mother of four young children and former Australian Hairdresser of the Year has always been involved in fashion and becoming a mother, saw a gap in the market for more cutting edge, street wear with great detail for children aged 1 to 7 years. Angela researched the market and began sketching designs and gained feedback from her friends within the fashion industry. Once Angela was happy with her designs she commenced the process of finding the best available materials and working with a reputable production company here in Bali. The results of the 12 month research and design process is the exciting kids fashion label: KIT N MINT. The label caters for both boys and girls aged 1 to 7 years.

Angela is promoting the apparel range via social media and will soon launch her brand online for purchasing. KIT N MINT is very excited to announce that the first consignments are now available for purchase at the exclusive beach club boutique store at FINNS BEACH CLUB. To have our cutting edge clothing available in the most prestigious beach club in Bali is very exciting and a perfect match! KITNMINT.COM

Finns Serves Up Coffee and Co Working Space If I had a dollar for each digital nomad I have spied tapping out a living on their lap tops at almost every bar, warung or cafe in Bali, I wouldn’t be sitting at this coffee shop writing this article! The digital age, social networking, online businesses, global internet access at the mere whisper of a wifi password and the desire to travel has made working from just about anywhere a popular career choice. That being said, the search for a spot where keyboard warriors can connect with their clients or simply check into their Instagram accounts is a constant concern. The struggle is real Snapchatters! Smaller cafes often impose time limits on wifi access (and rightly so!) the volume of internet users at any one time can often mean connections are slow and space to spread your notes and samples around can sometimes prove tight! Imagine a location where space to work was not an issue with a choice of secluded air conditioned work stations or al fresco areas with a view, ideal for networking with clients or coordinating meetings. Add to the equation speedy wifi (with

even faster access for members) and some of the cheapest coffee in the Gu and you could say Finns Bistro C Patio is one of Bali’s best networking spaces this side of Seminyak!

Finns members discount coffee breaks are on daily from 8 9am, 11am- 12 noon and 3pm-4pm and just happen to be timed perfectly to cater for post school drop offs, working coffee catch ups and after gym get togethers. With coffees only Rp15K, there’s no point in searching further afield for a table at which to toil away…..

Bistro C at Finns Recreation Club is now accessible to everyone from 7am until 10pm. Wifi for guests is fast with members enjoying access to an even speedier connection. Should you prefer access to a faster connection and the enjoyment of Finns members’ benefits, short term Social memberships are available and you can join for just a day if you like!

Choose Bistro C Patio at Finns Recreation Club to coordinate your next networking morning or small business working bee. Speak to their staff at reception to enquire about the possibility of booking a private meeting room. Parking out front is always available with taxis or transport readily accessible.

For wandering writers like me, coffee is essential for my ability to operate machinery (ie my keyboard) and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that the decision as to where I set up my desk for the daily grind is certainly swayed by the quality of the caffeine. Lucky for me, and many others judging by the numbers of faces pondering the screen of their Macbook Airs around me, Bistro C’s cuppa is as good as it gets and with their new signature Expat roast and bargain coffees for Finns members, my office might just stay put for a while.

BISTRO C SMOKE HOUSE

Whether it be for something social, a work meeting or just following a craving for a good morning coffee, see you soon at Finns Bistro C for Bali’s biggest co working space and cheapest cuppa on the island! 11 TIME, NOT TIMING, IS WHAT MATTERS A ten-year bet made by legendary investor and one of the richest men in the world, Warren Buffet, comes to a conclusion at the end of this year. The wager has been hosted by Longbets, an organisation set up as ‘a way to foster better long-term thinking’. The bet was that an investment in the S&P 500 index would outperform any portfolio of hedge funds over the ten-year period ending 31 December 2017. The size of the bet was one million dollars. But the winner will not keep the money; it is to be donated to a charity of the winner’s choice. There were very few bold enough to take on the bet despite the strong performance of hedge funds in the past, but one taker, Protege Partners, took up the challenge.

All such plans will see ups and downs as markets go through sometimes long cycles. But if the plan is invested in a diversity of assets with an emphasis on major markets it will invariably come out on top at the end of the day. I know because I have seen plans mature after 10, 15 and 20 years, including many held by expatriates in Bali. Admittedly, the end results have not matched projections supplied in the distant past, as 20 years ago interest rates and market returns were much higher than today. But they have invariably outperformed cash and perhaps, more importantly, provided a vehicle for accumulating savings in a disciplined manner that would probably not have occurred any other way. What matters is not when you start, or where you are after one year or even half way through; what counts is the finishing line!

The hare and the tortoise Why so many lose their way For Warren Buffet it looked like game over in a very short time as the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 brought down the S&P 500 index by 37% while many hedge funds revelled in the misery (through their ‘short’ and other contrarian strategies) by producing strong returns for investors. The timing for Buffet was disastrous. The S&P index took five years to catch up with the hedge fund portfolio but since then it has shot ahead and at the time of writing is showing a gain of 85% as opposed to just 22% for the hedge fund portfolio. We haven’t seen the end of the story yet as there are still a few months left in 2017 but unless there is a cataclysmic event that rocks the stock markets and hedge funds are able to capitalise on it (assuming they too have not been wiped out) then it seems extremely likely that the S&P index will win by a huge margin, and Warren Buffet’s chosen charity will be the lucky beneficiary. What does this tell us? This tells us that staying the course, irrespective of temptations to keep buying, selling or switching from time to time, is likely to produce the best long term results. You could substitute other indexes or asset classes and also see good returns over a ten year period. But many who have tried to actively ‘play the markets’ have ended up with losses. Trying to guess the best time to put money into or take money out of the markets is a fool’s game, because markets can be very unpredictable. To quote Great Depression era economist John Maynard Keynes: ‘Markets can remain irrational far longer than you can stay solvent’. I have frequently heard the reason for not investing being “there are too many uncertainties; I prefer to wait a while.” Often the nervous investor will wait until others have pushed up prices and will then wade in, missing most of the uptake and if too late, suffer losses when a bubble bursts. Many have been burned like this, not just with stocks but also with gold and property. Selling at the wrong time can also be a mistake. Some fund managers in the past have got into trouble for trying to be heroes by moving into cash to preserve profits only to be left behind and watch other funds flourishing as markets continued to rise. There is however one situation where you should stay out or get out of the markets and that is when you forsee a need for cash in the short to medium term. Stock markets, like property, are strictly for the long term (at least 10 years) unless you are prepared to take on the risks of short term speculation. When is the best time to start a long term savings or pension plan? The simple answer at all times is NOW! That is, provided you fully understand how they work and you are confident you can stay the course. If you have a steady job or business and – importantly – ample cash reserves, you can ignore the clouds on the horizon. Yes, I have known times when markets have fallen sharply just after clients have started a plan and have seen early losses. But it can actually be good news as there is then effectively a discount on the new money going in.

C/BT/G-14 Sept 16

Apart from seeing plans reach maturity and attain their objectives (nice to receive a lump sum of $100,000 or maybe a quarter of a million dollars shortly before retirement) I have also seen cases where others have lost their way and given up, often due to abandonment by their advisers and disinterest from the product provider. The rationale for throwing in the towel is usually that the value of the plan is far less than the money invested and therefore “I don’t want to throw any more good money after bad.” Unfortunately this reflects a lack of understanding as to how the plans work. The fact is they usually offer a ‘bonus incentive’ during the first 18 months to two years. This results in positive valuations initially and encourages investors to maintain contributions while the company recoups the bulk of its marketing costs. There then follows a period of higher charging which may depress valuations for a few years unless there are strong compensating returns in the selected funds. This period can last a few years and is when many investors will lose heart and drop out. The plans really come into their own in the later years when the impact of charges becomes much lower. There must be thousands of such ‘paid-up orphan plans’ in existence throughout the offshore world. The life companies are not bothered as they still collect fees from the plans or take a whopping surrender charge should anyone cash in. Some investors are persuaded to take out new and ‘better’ plans but that is a big mistake as they will follow the same process. The best value for continued saving would be to review the fund composition of the ‘dead’ plan and revive it (if permitted) with new contributions. All things being equal, the performance would be better than before as the bulk of the charges have already been paid. Conclusion Good timing can sometimes bring good results but it is usually more by luck than good judgement. Where long term investing is concerned, time is far more important than timing. If you are not convinced then feel free to take up Warren Buffet on his next challenge, but be prepared to pay out a million dollars to a charity of his choice!

THE SMILING BUDDHA

Ever since the popularity of Eat, Pray, Love women especially have been thronging to Bali looking for love, a spiritual connection or health. Ubud has become a mecca for those seeking change in their lives, to improve their health, find some spiritual transformation, get over a broken heart or simply find a new direction in their life. Many arrive not even knowing what they’re looking for. They just know that something needs to change to become happy and healthy.

Is food a problem for you?

region, pressing her fingers probing for blockages or gas in the colon. As she did this she explained how the colon worked and all of its parts and functions. Confessing to my history of constipation she explained how this had stretched a part of my colon, creating a bulge.

You are not alone. Overeaters Anonymous can help.

Options: Well you can sign up for a retreat. There’s all sorts of those available in Ubud – yoga, breath, rehab, mediation, spa or transformation just to name a few. Many people attend yoga every day or meditate daily or eat raw food. While all of those things may be good for you, if you have some underlying health issues, those need to be addressed. High on the list of holistic things to do in Ubud is detox, which has become very popular. We’re all aware that we’ve been eating poorly for years, breathing polluted air or partaking of alcoholic drinks, drugs or cigarettes. Colonic irrigation is one option to deal with those nasty toxins we’ve indulged in. Ubud may well have the cleanest colons in Indonesia with eight centers located in this small town. I decided to check out this cleansing phenomenon see why it’s so popular.

After my examination I laid on my side for her to gently insert the sterile plastic nozzle inside of me, then returned to lying face up. Let the water works begin. Putu checked the water pressure and comfort as I watched the TV monitor. Clear water appeared in the clear hose for several minutes as Putu observed my abdomen. Gradually sludge began to appear in the hose. Putu explained that the process was like exercising my colon to function the way it should it should be naturally.

C/NV/G-31 Aug. 16

She told me that in her five years of experience, only three men, ranging in age from twenties to fifties had clean wellworking systems. And that’s from hundreds of clients. How often should you have colon cleansing? This varies according to your system. If you have a lot of build-up in your system you’ll probably need at least three sessions to get rid of the old gunk. After that once a month is good. The Smiling Buddha offers packages of three, which will save you money and keep your system running smoothly. Benefits of Colon Cleansing

I’ve been several times to different locations for colon therapy but was highly recommended to check out The Smiling Buddha located on the outskirts of Ubud. This small homey clinic was set up by an Australian nurse Lesley, highly qualified in the art of colonics. She personally trained Putu, her assistant, who now operates the clinic with five years of experience under her belt. I arrived a little early at the Smiling Buddha and was immediately greeted by a very large friendly dog snoozing in the home-like lounge. I was sure that behind the closed wooden doors a treatment was going on so I helped myself to a glass of water and sat by the dog to wait. A few minutes later a door opened and a smiling Balinese lady, came out to greet me, introducing herself as Putu. She asked me to wait a few minutes while she finished with her client. Moments later her client emerged and headed immediately to the toilet. As the dog and I became friends, Putu returned and sat next to me to chat a little before starting the treatment.

A generally accepted theory of the benefit of colon cleansing is that hardened mucus lining the intestinal wall greatly reduces your ability to absorb nutrition. Not being able to absorb proper nutrition feeds the cycle of craving more food and stronger flavours. The truth is what your body really desires is better nutrition. Unless this cycle is broken, no amount of will power will successfully change your dietary habits in the long run.

C/He/I-01 Feb 17

Most people notice that after this intestinal build-up has been removed their body returns to a more natural state and a greater awareness of how foods actually affect them. This opens the possibility to fully appreciate the “true taste” of foods. This makes dietary changes much easier and people really feel and taste the difference. Most people grimace when I mention colon cleansing, thinking that it will be painful, dirty and disgusting and embarrassing. In fact, it’s none of those things. The Smiling Buddha is very clean with sterile equipment and Putu’s expertise and gentle manner put you at ease. It’s time to clean up your act. Smiling Buddha Colonic Irrigation Jl. Tirta Tawar No.6, Petulu, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571 Phone: +62 812-3787-1644

Accompanying me into her inner sanctum of work I sat down opposite Putu as she explained about the equipment from the UK that she uses. It was different from any of my previous experiences elsewhere. A small TV screen was on the wall above the box-like equipment, which was attached to a small camera to monitor the debris emerging during the cleansing process. They use filtered spring water that flows non-stop during the process, which is approximately 60 litres of water during the hour. She explained because the water was constantly gently flowing it caused less discomfort to the client. My previous experiences involved filling the colon to capacity and stopping the water until it became uncomfortable for the client then releasing the water, repeating this process numerous times until the usual 19 liters of water was used. Lying face up on the bed, Putu gently examined my abdominal

Reflecting the growing popularity of Bali as a sports destination, This Sporting Life highlights a number of events coming up. RUGBY UNION NEWS Bali Chilli’s join the 20th Anniversary of the Kotekas in Timika, Papua The Bali Chillis Rugby Union club travelled to Timika, Papua last weekend to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the legendary Kotekas Rugby Club. Famous for their grass skirts and kotekas (penis gourds), the Kotekas were far more than a side show at rugby union tournaments. Indeed the Kotekas were the first rugby union club in Indonesia where the majority of the players were Indonesian citizens. In an era of expat heavy teams like ISCI and the Bali Chooks, the Kotekas were a sign of the future of rugby in this country. Yes they got slammed by heavier and more experienced expat teams but they kept coming back until they eventually succeeded in the early 2000’s. And when the inaugural national team, the Rhinos was established in 2005, the Kotekas players were there to be called up. In recognition of this tradition, the Bali Chilli’s who first went to Timika in 2015, have joined together with legends of Indonesian rugby like Paul Quaglia (one of the founders of the Kotekas),Grant Olsen and other rugby luminaries to celebrate with the men from the jungle in Timika.

By The Coach

This Sporting Life three days of competition (2-4 October) with the 5th of October being held in reserve in case of poor conditions. Freediving, breath hold diving, or skin diving is a form of underwater diving that relies on divers’ ability to hold their breath until resurfacing rather than relying on the use of a breathing apparatus such as scuba gear. To help our readers with the jargon of this fast growing sport, below is a quick guide to the various disciplines are as follows: CWT – Constant weight apnea The athlete has to dive to the depth following a guide line that he or she is not allowed to actively use during the dive; only a single hold of the guide line to stop the descent and start the ascent is allowed. The ‘Constant Weight’ refers to the fact that the athlete is not allowed to drop any diving weights during the dive. Both bifins and monofin can be used during this discipline.

FIM – Free immersion apnea FIM is a discipline in which the athlete uses the vertical guiderope to pull him or herself down to depth and back to the surface without using ballast or fins. It is known for its ease compared with the Constant Weight disciplines, while the athlete is still not allowed to release weight. VWT – Variable weight apnea VWT is a record discipline that uses a weighted sled for descent. Athletes return to the surface by pulling themselves up along a line or swimming with or without fins. NLT – No-limits apnea NLT is a record discipline that allows the athlete to use any means of breath hold diving to depth and return to the surface as long as a guideline is used to measure the distance. Most divers use a weighted sled to dive down and use an inflatable bag to return to the surface.

CNF – Constant weight apnea without fins CNF follows the identical rules as Constant Weight, except no swimming aids such as fins are allowed.

RUNNING NEWS 2017 Maybank Bali Marathon Later this month on Sunday, August 27, 2017, the Maybank Bali Marathon will run amongst the rice fields of Gianyar, starting from the Bali Safari Park. The Bali Marathon is now in its 6th edition. The organisers Maybank Indonesia have made a number of improvements and refinements to make the event more vibrant as they put it.The number of participants is expected to reach 8000-9000 runners, a 20% increase from last year. “We increase the number of participants this year to accommodate the interest of participation that continue to increase from year to year. In tune with the increase in the number of participants, we will also improve the readiness of better infrastructure to maintain the quality, safety and comfort of the race, ranging from race pack collection, setting the starting pen and finishing area. It is our main principle that additional participants should not diminish the quality of the race, “said Taswin Zakaria, President Director of Maybank Indonesia. The race will have 4 categories: full-marathon (FM), half marathon (HM), 10K and children sprint (children race).

but I feel as if she may be used to living to a higher standard than I. Even though this is a totally material way to judge a person, I worry how she is going to look at me when it becomes clear that she has accomplished so much more.

Question: An old friend back home has found me online though I haven’t seen him in many years. His wife just died of cancer, and it doesn’t surprise me that such a horrific experience might lead him to look for old friends. But he strikes me as being desperately lonely, and he instantmessages me continually with way too much information about his marriage and his wife’s illness. If I don’t respond in a day or two, he writes again and asks why I haven’t replied. He has asked for my personal contact info - so that we can “catch up” - and has even indicated that he may come to Bali now that he knows I’m here.

What he most likely wants at this point is for the two of you to reconnect so that you can hold his hand throughout this terrible time. You, on the other hand, have not thought about him for 10 years and find it smothering to be his sole emotional support. At some point – maybe 5 or 6 days after one of his “where have you been?” messages – you may want to write and suggest that he seeks out a local grief counselor or support service to talk to about his loss. Then, pull way back on contact. The best things to do are to steer him toward help and to be honest with yourself about what you are willing to give.

I’m normally good at drawing boundaries, and under other circumstances, I would simply tell him to lay off and let me write if/when I care to. But his wife just died, he’s suffering, and I sympathize and feel trapped, resentful and afraid to disengage without seeming insensitive. We were friends a decade ago, and he and I seem to have different notions of what that means. Help!

Question: I have a date coming up with a very attractive woman, and I am freaking out. We met on a bemo ride, and I have since learned a lot about her online. She was the one who texted me first, our texts have been great, and when I asked her out for drinks, she quickly accepted. I realize this is a good sign, but if anything, it has made me worry that there may actually be chemistry between us, and I don’t want to blow it. I normally have anxiety issues in general, but what I found out about her has escalated this to Code Red.

Dr. ZZ: Emotions aside, let’s identify a few flat facts: #1. You don’t want this person in your life; #2. In a moment of sympathy, you engaged, and now you feel stuck; #3. His extreme grief is causing him to latch onto you in needy ways. For these reason, it is important that you stop responding to him on his terms. Disable, for the time being, whatever messaging capabilities he is using to communicate and pull way back if it’s on social media. You have your own life and are not able to check for messages every day. It may not sound fair, but it will help to be generally absent for a while. Go about your life, and respond to his messages periodically when and if you choose – say, once a week. Ignore his questions regarding your response rate, and reply briefly with basic, neutral platitudes like, “I can’t imagine how hard this must be for you, and “ I hope you are taking good care of yourself.”

It turns out she is from a privileged family and attended an extremely prestigious university. We come from the same home country, but she works for a Fortune 500 corporation and, given her job description, she would essentially be my boss if not a level higher. I am a smart guy and enjoy my life,

I also know that the pat wisdom in a situation like this is to “just be yourself” and to worry more about whether she’s the one cool enough to be with me. Can you give me any advice on how to be less of a klutz about this and just let go? Dr. ZZ: Even privileged girls from prestigious universities need love. Although there is no one way to impress all women or get to know the unique, brilliant, and fabulous creatures who are particularly awesome, one thing is certain: A guy who sends fun messages and then segues into making plans in a way that is effortless (ex., “Want to do something Tuesday? Sure, ok, let’s meet at a certain time and place”) plays a winning strategy. What you don’t want to do is trade 17 emails in order to make plans, or offer unlimited options (ex., “Whatever you want to do is fine” or “Well, I know we said Saturday but I could also do Sunday or Tuesday if you prefer.”) The “coffee date” also almost never works. Suggest, instead, a solid plan with confidence. Just come up with a relaxing place to meet where you can speak softly to each other. If it’s within walking distance from a restaurant, gallery or other place where you can spend time if the date goes well, so much the better! No need to go overboard. It’s less about impressing her with how hip you are than about making everything easy and relaxed, and knowing what is a good space for hanging out and connecting.

Update

Habitat on Monkey Forest Road at the Padang Tegal end and directly opposite the giant new car park for the Monkey Forest, keeps on introducing new and tempting dishes. One of the latest is one of their best. On the menu it has the name of Japanese Roulade [pictured], thin escalopes of beef rolled around a bay leaf infused bread stuffing, baked in the oven. The interesting options here are spread across the menu. Breakfast can be a healthy Duo of Avocado, two halves of rye toast both covered with smashed avocado, one topped with a poached egg, the other with lemon cured salmon. Just a snack the try one of their Vietnamese Banh Mi [lemon cured salmon, lemongrass prawn or black pepper chicken] in a crusty baguette. Another great new dish is their Crispy Chicken. The chicken is deep fried coated with corn flour, then stir fried with orange juice based sauce, add fresh julienne cut vegetables, served in edible wonton skin bowl and steamed rice on the side. GF version is also available.

Golden Monkey has re-opened on Jln. Dewi Sita. It is Ubud’s only complete Chinese restaurant. A minor renovation now has banquettes along the wall. It is the only Ubud restaurant to serve all of those wonderful Cantonese roast meats [duck, chicken, pork and now a crisp pork belly as well]. Alternately you can enjoy fresh dim sum prepared to order, simple dishes such as Honey Sesame Pork, Kung Pao Chicken or Sweet & Sour Prawns. For the vegetarians many items from which to choose; healthy Broccoli or Kailan with oyster or garlic sauce, Turnip Cake, Mushrooms XO or a touch of Szechuan with their Eggplant Claypot. At the top end there is that unique Peking Duck [whole bird or half] with its crisp skin shaved at the table to be inserted in small soft pancakes with hoisin sauce, the body taken back to the kitchen to be prepared as you wish for a subsequent course as San Choy Bow, Kung Pao or Black Pepper. Real Chinese in Ubud, a simple meal or a Cantonese feast!

Red Dragon is another ramen noodle bar, but this one is Yokohama style. A monster pressure cooker sits on the front terrace. It is used to make the special broths for the ramen dishes. Your Ramen here can be Negi, Yasai or Char-Siu, all with chicken or you can have a Tonkotsu version. Tsuke-Men is a hot and cold dish, hot soup and cold noodles. Unlike many of the other cheap eateries on this stretch of Jl. Dewi Sri Red Dragon is open on Sundays.

BC Steakhouse, Jln. Raya Petitenget, evolved from the Butchers Club that had been operating on these premises for the previous year and it is a high temple for the beef-lover! By now everyone knows about their dry-aged beef, used for their steaks and in their incredible hamburgers. But there is another secret at BC Steakhouse, their entrees alone are worth a visit. Whether it is for their Dry-aged Corn Dogs with beef sausage, chilli dust and smoked onion mustard, or their Japanese style Calamari [with yuzu, furikaki and sweet kewpie], the calamari is actually tender, not rubbery. Most places do Chicken Wings but these are with lemon zest, cracked pepper, chili and coriander…great taste! As are the Caesar Salads that are made with that super healthy Kale and white anchovies. But for me it is their unusual Risotto Chicken Balls that I always have to order. Balls of risotto stuffed with chicken and cheese then rolled in the very crunchy panko breadcrumbs, the dip margarita sauce and kewpie mayonnaise. Definitely worth a visit!

Nostimo has opened on Jln.Raya Pengosekan, at Ubud’s southern end. Already a big success on Raya Petitenget Alex and his crew are now attacking the budget eatery area of Pengosekan. In Greek cuisine almost all of the many meat dishes come via the grill. Simple comfort food, dishes recognized by all with no mystery attached. Almost every cuisine in the world has at least one dish constructed with minced meat, at Nostimo it is their kofte dish, called Soutzoukaki. The mince is rolled into small sausage shapes and grilled, all three of them. The Platter comes with folds of pita bread, salad and French [Greek?] fries, a bowl of tzatziki sauce for dipping after you have wrapped segments of the ‘sausage’ in a strip of the hot, fresh, pita bread. A large serve and for less than Rp. 100,000 it is a very good meal. Alternately there is the ever-popular Souvlaki Platter served exactly the same way. Lamb is the norm for souvlaki but as imported lamb is expensive in Bali there is also a chicken version, just as good. Gyros? Of course, and pork is the meat used, shaved and wrapped in pita. A variety of other hot meat wraps are also available. Nostimo is a great newcomer, and yet another different cuisine, for Ubud. Sarong has undoubtedly been one of the major Bali success stories of the past decade. It was the first restaurant to operate successfully on Raya Petitenget [replacing a Singapore operation that had failed] and a showcase for the kitchen talent of Aussie-Scot chef Will Meyrick and his love, and understanding, of the Thai cuisine. It opened full, and has stayed that way ever since, irrespective of so-called seasons. The ‘mainly Thai’ has been enlarged to be ‘the best of Asian cuisine’. There is no reason for major menu changes here just a few little ones, and as usual they are mouth-watering. A salad of honey-glazed duck with mandarin infused winter melon, Chinese slaw and crushed peanuts. Lamb skewers from the tandoor with a salad of potato, green chilli and pomegranate, and a touch of home for the chef with Scotch Eggs but stuffed with lamb and beetroot, on the side a dahl vada and achari yoghurt. As for new mains how about Barramundi baked in coconut, coriander, green chilli and cashew nuts, served with beetroot yoghurt? Sarong presents cuisines that explore and feed the taste buds of sophisticated diners. C/R/G-5 July 17

The Star of Sanur!

However the challenges continue and not only does Massimo produce Bali’s most popular gelato but now also has a dedicated cheese room where many of Italy’s cheese styles are re-produced. This you can now enjoy without the expense of buying an imported product. They are available at leading supermarkets and delicatessens, as is the Massimo brand pasta.

Massimo il Ristorante breaks all of the rules. Sanur has more than 100 restaurants, some are busy, others not. Massimo, at the southern end of Danau Tamblingan is by far the largest restaurant in Sanur and, amazingly, also the busiest. Peak times without a prior reservation and a wait for a table is almost always necessary.

Pasta dishes feature on almost every menu in Bali. Sometimes I think that ‘Handmade on the Premises’ is in fact a new brand on a cellophane pack. Sadly, too often the resultant over-cooked offering is like chewing dried rope.

Why is this humble Italian eatery so popular?

Back on the main menu, start with something simple? There are a number of unusual Bruschette; topped with a creamy mix of squid and shrimps, or with ricotta cheese and grilled sausage [also from Lecce]. Soups combine the ones you expect to find: Minestrone, Mushroom and the more unusual Stracciatella [vegetable but with whisked eggs added], or a pasta soup from Lecce, a creamy mix with potato, bacon and Parmesan skin.

Price

: Rp. 400,000 for two [+ drinks].

Risotto is often a disaster in Bali, as elsewhere outside of Italy! At Massimo, the Risotto Salsiccia e Funghi is magic! Arborio rice, of course, but also the right kitchen techniques, combined with chunks of sausages and mushroom. Even if you think you dislike Risotto, do yourself a favour and try this one! As it is only made to order, it takes 20 mins [18 actually, plus 2 minutes to get to your table], but well worth the wait.

Credit Cards

: All major cards.

Food

: Italian, with specials from Lecce.

Wine

: Excellent list.

Service

: Bright and breezy.

Atmosphere

: A happy eating place.

The mains at Massimo include Tournedos alla Massimo [thick medallions of beef with prosciutto, mushrooms and pate], Filetto al Gorgonzola, grilled beef, with that wonderful cheese sauce again. Petti di Pollo Burro e Salvia is so simple, just tender chicken breasts in sage butter. Whilst Chicken Breast, Lecce style, is a deep-fried breast with ginger-balsamic on rucola and pachino. All the old favourites are here as well, Scaloppine and Saltimbocca included.

Overall

: Great taste, and value.

The charismatic, always smiling, Massimo is in attendance day and night to welcome new and old friends alike. His enthusiasm and passion about his food spreads. The food could be called ‘comfort food’, the only surprises are pleasant ones. Massimo is from Lecce and features many regional specialties from there on the menu. Where is Lecce, I hear you ask? It is a city at the base of Italy’s heel, just before the boot that kicks Sicily into the Mediterranean [in the words of that old school-kid chant]. Amongst a standard comprehensive Italian menu, Massimo began by including a handful of dishes from his own region of Lecce. Mainly pasta, it was of unusual shape and size, which the experts tell us, provides totally different tastes. Sagne Ncannulate is a special fettuccine, Lecce style. It is thinner, and more delicate, than the normal one and that causes it to curl. Cu lla Recotta Scante is with lamb with spicy ricotta [a hint of chilli] in tomato sauce. For a different taste sensation, sprinkle with grated Goat’s cheese, instead of Parmesan. Also from Lecce is the Pittole, with which you are presented soon after ordering your meal. They are made from pizza dough and deep-fried. The result is light tasty mini dumplings that arrive at your table piping hot! Impossible to leave alone, or even wait to cool! I think they have their own pure dialect of Italian in Lecce as well, or is it a different language? Mbrigghiatieddhi de Carne e Prumitori [try saying that either drunk or sober] is an unusual but very tasty dish, beef rolled around ham and pecorino, with parmesan [pictured], and one that I often order. That used to be the extent of the Lecce influence on the menu but popular demand has changed that and there are now many more regional dishes. Now many other Lecce style pastas, as well as the more conventional ones, are offered at Massimos most of which combine tomato, garlic and chilli. Linguini cu lli Caurri also has fresh crab, Rechitelle cu lli Broculli e lla Saussicca has sausage meat and broccoli, whilst the Lecce Gnocchi [Gratinati] has a sauce of 4 different cheeses.

Too many non-Italian chefs seem to think that ‘al dente’ is a city in Italy! Order pasta at Massimo’s and you will think you are back in Italy. Tortellini Prosciutto e Funghi [beef stuffed pasta topped with mushrooms], and Ravioli di Ricotta e Spinaci alla Piemontese [spinach and ricotta pockets of pasta with a butter and sage sauce] are both perfect! Plump sachets stuffed with fillings. Others include Penne Salmone Norvegese e Mascarpone Italiano [Norwegian Salmon with ‘Mascarpone’ Cheese], and Gnocchi al Gorgonzola [potato dumplings with a wonderful creamy gorgonzola cheese sauce].

Massimo is an important contributor to the Bali food scene. Great value!

A full pizza menu is also available, to have at the table or to take away from the street side counter where they are prepared and fired in their special pizza oven. The pizzas come in all sizes and from every region of Italy. For dessert a special sweet pizza or that wonderful Marscapone Nougat Cream with a black pepper chocolate sauce, or finish off with one of their kitchen made fruity gelatos, also sold at street-side, at the restaurant entrance. The spacious layout of this restaurant assures a relaxed privacy at all times, even with a happy band of Italians present! The good wine list includes many Italian specials [Chianti of course]. For the local people of Sanur, and those who wish to travel for quality, how comforting to know there is somewhere you can always rely on! There is also a variety of Italian bread baked on the premises. It is available at a special counter inside the restaurant, close to the kitchen entrance. It comes out of the wood-fired ovens at 12 midday, daily.

24 The Death of Authentic Primitive Art by Shelly Errington As it’s provocative title suggests, the long, slow, irreversible death of primitive art is the subject of this important, very readable and refreshingly contrarian view of the Primitive Art world of museums, art theorists, mailorder catalogs, boutiques, tourism and world events. Ironically, the artifacts and textiles of marginalized people like the Papuans, Dayaks and Lesser Sunda islanders are often celebrated as examples of national heritage at the same historical moment that these same people who make the objects are being turned into urban poor and menial workers. Tracing a loosely historical account of ethnic art, author Shelly Errington explores an eclectic collection of public sites in Indonesia that have become the quintessential architectural language of the Indonesian nation state, endlessly mutating and adaptable - the Taman Mini cultural theme park and the national airport in Jakarta and the restored 9th century Buddhist monument of Borobudur - to show how the idea of the primitive can be used in the interests of promoting nationalism and economic development. Errington argues that primitive art was invented as a new type of art object at the beginning of the 20th century. Radical and unexpected at the time, tribal art was looked upon by avantgarde artists as a sort of magical, timeless source of ideas and images that were both an antidote and rebuke of repressive Western civilization. The market for authentic primitivism grew with the birth of modernism and had a major influence on Cubism and Surrealism in the early in the 20th century. With the triumph of the free market, it continued to gain vogue in the decades after WW II. By the end of the last century, the supply of artifacts in the older “Rockefeller-Wing mode” of high primitive art had become nearly exhausted as the societies that produced them had been absorbed into the global economic system. The golden age of primitive art were the first two decades of the Cold War when the number of airline companies had increased exponentially, heralding the new age of mass tourism by air and bringing primitive art newfound availability and legitimacy. The coming out party for primitive art was the opening in 1957 of New York’s Museum of Primitive Art, but it was the inauguration of the Rockefeller Wing at New York’s Metropolitan Museum that was the genre’s Debutante’s Ball that would usher in a world market. Starting in the 1970s, in order to seek both foreign exchange and construct a national identity from a vast patchwork of inhabitants, the Indonesian government began an endless search for natural resources (minerals, oil, timber), human resources (cheap labor) and cultural resources – exotic and colorful peoples and their ritual artifacts. After the production of true primitive art came to an end in remote tribal areas, “ethnic art” rushed in to fill the vacuum and expand its market share. We only have to witness the ubiquity of silly, sad primitive tourist kitsch, tastefully selected to match the sofa or coffee table, that now surrounds tourist sites all over the world to realize how “primitive art” has been transformed and monetized. The souvenir shops of Legian and Seminyak reveal the amount and variety of inexpensive tourist folk art and generic tropical jewelry that is churned out, spin-offs of traditional artifacts designed for people in touch with world taste or jobbers dealing in the world art market. The book’s title belies the fact that it is more than a discourse on how crafts, antiques and primitive art have been corrupted. Its 310 pages is also a cultural analysis which takes on larger

issues of philosophy and political history. The defilement of tribal art in fact reflects a massive power shift between the vanguard of civilized modernity that represents “progress” and the rear guard of “stone age” people clinging to tradition, an ever growing underclass of people throughout the world at the periphery of the economic system. NC/Ns/G - 27 July 11

Errington asserts that with their homelands displaced by mining, oil, logging and hydro-dam projects, artisans have become modern-day peasants. The status of primitive art is now essentially that of a dead modern art master. Errington presents a number of piercing insights, revelations and clear and inspired explanations: *Holding the belief that as a natural process “the culture is dead” or that a craft has “died out” or that the society that made certain artifacts “is defunct” serves the psychological needs of dealers, collectors, thieves and governments, enabling them to ignore the fact that the looting of cult objects hastens the culture’s demise. *In Indonesian art, the Java-centric government asserts wide-ranging political, cultural and economic hegemony over an enormously diverse country. The way the Javanese view it, modern art is produced in Jakarta, classical art comes from central Java and primitive art is from the Outer Islands.

C/He/G-2 August 17

*The best customers of Indonesian ethnic art and sculpture are collectors of African art who are accustomed to paying tens of thousands of dollars for authentic fine old pieces. By comparison, “authentic fine old pieces” from Indonesia are a stunning bargain. *The over busy art objects of Bali have never qualified as primitive art because the sensibilities of the island favor highly ornate and densely elaborated designs that are not a modernist aesthetic. Bali’s art is influenced from India, a complex and literate “high” civilization. Moreover, the expression of a world religion such as Hinduism in Balinese art mitigates their primitiveness in the hierarchy of primitive art. The characteristic arts of Bali are based on sound and movement – gamelan and trance dances – or consist of gold jewelry and textiles which are considered “minor” arts and are neither iconic or sculptural.

C/E/G-2 August 17

Witty, sophisticated, lucidly written and highly original, Errington’s study of the historic progress of primitivism in the contemporary art world is a lively introduction to art institutions and a significant contribution to the fields of cultural and anthropological scholarship. The Death of Authentic Primitive Art should be assigned reading for collectors, art students and the growing numbers of scholars investigating issues of artistic authenticity, legitimacy and the ups and downs of the tribal art market. Written almost 20 years ago, the book’s premises have now become reality. The Death of Authentic Primitive Art: And Other Tales of Progress by Shelly Errington, University of California Press 1998, ISBN: 978-052-021-2114, paperback, 310 pages, Notes, References (Bibliographies), dimensions 15cm & 23cm.

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

Is listening part of Balinese culture?

Villa Private residences Hotels & resorts Corporate

Go to a meeting or take a Balinese to a music concert and you’ll quickly learn that Balinese prefer talking to listening. Over the past 20 years living in Bali, I have been to numerous local meetings and they’re pretty noisy spectacles indeed. Very few people sit in silence listening to the speaker but prefer to chat with someone next to them or, these days, absorb themselves with a gadget. Surprisingly few people say anything and the speaker just rambles on through seemingly oblivious. I wonder if anyone ever learns much about what the speaker wants to say! The Bali Arts Festival is a month-long annual event that features hundreds of gamelan and dance performances, but most Balinese go to watch rather than to listen. People chat, answer and eat through performances and sometimes kids run across the stage or peep through the curtains. Culturally Bali is a very noise oriented place. Even the way Balinese talk is lively, dynamic, excitable and onomatopoeic. People sing while they work and sing to babies and small children constantly. Balinese look after noisy roosters and constantly barking dogs. In the monsoon the croaking of mating frogs can be deafening. The rice fields have clackers and other paraphernalia to scare the birds; the beaches have their wind organ sunari and pindaken on towering bamboo poles. Even the kites buzz as they fly. Indeed little room for silence. I believe that all this noise has made Balinese immune to it. In fact, silence perhaps makes a Balinese uneasy. Nonetheless, silence is slowly being imported. There are meditation groups and retreats, sermons on TV and in villages like those in churches and mosques. Modern gamelan composers and traditional gamelan activists are encouraging audiences to listen by closing their eyes as they “watch”. Personally, I feel that learning to listening is a positive foreign import among the many negatives that have come with globalisation.

experts tell us this is the point at which eyeglasses will make the most difference. However, we have also run the project at a small number of needy SMAs – and at the other end of the scale, at an old peoples’ home in Lovina. Being a small club in one of the poorest areas of Bali we have very limited opportunity to raise funds locally, and the funds we are able to raise have to support our other projects – about which, more next time it’s our turn for the Rotary News in the Bali Advertiser!

Vision For The Future For the last five years or so, the Rotary Club of Bali Lovina has been running a series of projects to provide eyeglasses to students in need in Buleleng. This has enerous been made possible by generous donations from overseas clubs and individuals, as well as through the wonderful cooperation of Bali Top Optical. It works like this … we use whatever sources and contacts we have, both inside e and outside Rotary, to obtain n funds for the eyeglassess project. Bali Top Optical d has come on board and supports us with technical expertise, free testing, free frames and lenses at cost price (within certain financial limits of course). We then seek out schools across Buleleng that would like to be part of the program. In this we have been greatly supported by a local yayasan, Peduli Sesama Philanthropic Work. This group has helped us to identify the schools in greatest need of assistance, with larger numbers of poor rural families.

to the school with their technical equipment and test those we have previously listed. The computerized mediate testing provides an immediate printout of the prescription required for each student. The students are then able to choose a pair of frames from a wide range of stylish e models – there is much use of the mirror at this point! Finally, 2 or 3 weeks later, the technicians from Bali Top Optical accompany the Rotary Club members back to the school for the final handover and checks, and instructions for use and care. Over the past four years or so, we have provided hundreds of students with eye glasses. The difference this has made to their lives has been immeasurable – there have been students previously unable to see the blackboard who now can. The number of students needing glasses in the poorer areas is significantly higher than national averages. We think this is due to a number of factors, but most probably poor nutrition in early years.

E Education is the key to improvement of life in Bali, and the p provision of eyeglasses is ensuring that some of our ne neediest students are not de deprived of the o opportunity to take pa in all aspects of part the classroom. We must acknowledge the sterling work of our Club Secretary, David Liscumb, in his untiring leadership of this project, and again thank our project partners Bali Top Optical and Peduli Sesama Philanthropic Work. For more information about the Rotary Club of Bali Lovina (the only Rotary Club in all of Buleleng!) please visit our website at www.jepunsegara.com/rotaryclubbalilovina There you will also find details of our meetings – please come along and join us next time you’re in Lovina! In fact, our next meeting on August 9 will be an Open House meeting to introduce anyone interested to our Club as part of our membership drive. Join us for morning coffee on that date – details on the website.

Now the fun begins – the Rotary Club members head out to the chosen school with our set of eye charts and pretend to be optometrists. We test all the students in the school and list those who seem to have any difficulties with the eye chart. We usually end up with a list of between 50 to 80 students out of the 300 or so at the average SMP. The real optometrists from Bali Top Optical then come out

So we depend almost entirely on donations from outside, a up till now have received a great deal of support. But and w are always seeking more funds to maintain and expand we th project. this

The Invisible Yoginis A few weeks ago I woke up to the fact that not only was I not getting any younger, but my sedentary lifestyle was having a decided impact on my contours. I hate the gym, walking is difficult here and it’s too cold for aquarobics even if I had a pool, which I don’t. But there was a yoga studio 5 minutes away. I pledged to send my increasingly corpulent self to yoga 4 times a week, no excuses. Of course I was aware that Ubud heaved with svelte yogins of every g e n d e r. T h e y strode our shattered sidewalks in stylish togs which revealed startling expanses of lean, tattooed epidermis. Numerous retail outlets catered to their every imaginable need at first world prices. Advertisements for yoga classes, workshops and teacher training covered all available horizontal surfaces. I had, in fact, witnessed the very first glimmer of Bali’s now-booming yoga industry. After the Bali bomb in 2002, tourism tanked. Ubud, with its economic focus on tourism, was in dire straits. Meghan Pappenheim decided to do something constructive to attract a new kind of tourist to Bali. The artifact export business she’d built up with her husband Kadek Gunarta was not doing well. She was casting around for new directions and we were brainstorming a website she planned to call www.balispirit.com “Yoga,” she said intently as we sat in her little office in the family compound on Jalan Hanoman. “We need to bring yoga to Bali.” “Yoga? Bali?” I struggled to connect the two concepts. “Yes,” she nodded emphatically. “Yoga is going to be really big.” The rest is history. Meghan opened a small yoga studio on top of her house in 2004 and began to market the concept of yoga in Bali internationally. When the Yoga Barn and Intuitive Flow opened in 2007 they joined the Bali Yoga Shala in Seminyak as the first dedicated yoga studios Bali. Now there are about 20 on the island, attracting an important chunk of the tourism market. The ripple effect is significant, with shops selling everything from mats to books, clothing, oils, music and jewellery. The yogins patronise a growing list of healthy restaurants which in turn support farmers of fruit, vegetables, herbs, cashews, rice and spirulina. The Bali Spirit Festival brings hundreds of participants and teachers

to Ubud each year. Yoga has become a leading tourism activity. About 40 years ago when I started doing yoga, it was far from mainstream. In those days it was pretty much Hatha. Yoga was a slow, stately, careful meditative practice requiring no particular clothing or fancy accessories. Just a mat, some sweats and a teacher who had studied for years in India. Along with most of my generation this is still what I imagine when I think of yoga. I was vaguely aware of a whole menu of different yoga flavours that had evolved in the intervening decades, so I studied the class list to select an appropriate option. ‘Gentle Flow’ sounded promising. Oh the shock of it, Dear Reader. I had done a little lazy bending and stretching at home over the years and called it yoga. My misty memories were soon abandoned in the face of the contemporary interpretation of the practice. There was nothing gentle about it. This was a real work out for my older, out-of-shape self, and it moved fast. The teacher was about 22, as were most of the class participants, and they could all put their toes in their ears. This was discouraging. I soon learned to get to class early in order to unroll my mat against the back wall, where I wouldn’t frighten the horses doing Downward Dog. It took several sessions to learn the different poses, which changed with dizzying frequency. “Inhale, Cat. Exhale, Cow. Inhale, Tabletop. Exhale, Cobra. Inhale, Up Dog. Exhale, Down Dog, Warrior, Lunge, Goddess, Chair…”

though they hold much of the nation’s wealth. The estimated number of female boomers in the United States alone is 38.44 million. They have money to spend and the time to spend it, but no one is noticing. “We are 100% invisible to marketers. That’s pretty easy to establish,” says Marti Barletta, author of Marketing to Women and PrimeTime Women: How to Win the Hearts, Minds, and Business of Boomer Big Spenders. Girlpower Marketing released a report in 2013 titled “Boomer Women: The Invisible Goldmine.” Surveying 200 female boomers, the report found that 53% felt overlooked by product advertising and marketing because of their age. The survey also found that 68.3% of respondents felt advertisers never or very rarely target their age group on a regular basis, while 31.7% said advertisers sometimes target their age group. No one in the group said they were targeted by advertisers often or almost always. According to a 2012 Nielsen study, ‘Introducing Boomers: Marketing’s Most Valuable Generation,’ boomers now control 70% of the country’s disposable income. Boomers made up almost $230 billion in sales for consumer packaged goods in 2012, 49% of total sales. In addition to their existing funds, baby boomers are set to inherit $15 trillion over the next 20 years. Add to this the fact that women drive about 75% of all consumer purchasing, and it’s pretty clear who spends the most. So, a little respect, please.

I soon learned to get to class early in order to unroll my mat against the back wall, where I wouldn’t frighten the horses doing Downward Dog. The pace was grueling, and it was every yogin for him/herself. Inverted in Down Dog (“Lengthen the spine! Sit bones to the sky!”) I heard the next directive with alarm. “Step or float to the front of the mat.” Now, my feet were at the extreme far end of the mat; I could not imagine how they were going to cover the intervening real estate in a single graceful movement. I was still stumbling clumsily to the front of my mat while everyone else was already in their graceful Half Lifts. I admit that for the first few classes I was demoralised. I was constantly falling out of my poses. No one ever said, “Hey you at the back, the one with gray hair, are you okay back there?” Then I got cross. Didn’t these whippersnappers realise that my generation discovered sex, drugs, rock and roll, yoga, vegetarianism and vibrators? They did not know, they did not care. I was invisible. But in fact I represent a substantial business opportunity. According to a 2016 story from the American Marketing Association, women born between 1946 and 1964 - ‘Boomer Women’ - remain invisible to marketers. Less than 5% of advertising dollars are targeted to adults aged 35 to 64, even

In the past month I’ve gradually become more comfortable in yoga class, although I still position myself against the back wall. But there are hardly any yoga clothes in this town that I can wear. I’ve found very few age-appropriate classes, or teachers of Boomer age who understand and have personal experience of 65 year old joints. I’m not alone here. There are hundreds of us Boomer Babes living in Ubud who would love to get back into yoga and fitness routines. It seems that every other niche market is being addressed except ours. Surely it’s time someone recognised the opportunity and welcomed we over-55s back onto our mats?

UBUD WRITERS & READERS FESTIVAL REVEALS SNEAK PEEK LINEUP AND EARLY BIRD TICKETS winning memoirist Kate Holden. Indonesia’s premier puppet theatre group, Papermoon, and dancer-choreographer Eko Supriyanto, have both garnered international attention for their imaginative transformations of Indonesian traditions. Performances by each will headline what promises to be the Festival’s most exhilarating arts program yet.

The first round of authors, artists and activists who will lead this year’s five-day Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) program of fiery discussions, literary lunches, and powerful performances from 25–29 October has been announced. From Kalimantan to Canada, Riau to Lucknow, the first lineup reveal of 16 authors and artists is testament to Indonesia’s – and the Festival’s – famed cultural and artistic diversity.

thousands to be unbound from the society they’re born into. Leading the discussion on our environmental responsibilities to future generations is internationally-acclaimed climatologist and conservationist Tim Flannery, while Britain’s greatest authority on Chinese food, Fuchsia Dunlop, will stir the senses with her explorations in cultural preservation.

The Festival is thrilled to welcome Scotland’s king of crime writing, Ian Rankin, alongside Canadian author Madeleine Thien, whose works on diasporic histories have received universal acclaim.

Through its strong focus on the Indonesian literary and artistic landscape, UWRF continues to be the most prominent platform for showcasing the nation’s emerging and established writers and artists. One of Indonesia’s most outspoken journalists Leila S. Chudori, and prolific author and social commentator Seno Gumira Ajidarma, lead the national lineup.

Wrenched from his origins and miraculously finding his way home, the story which inspired the film Lion will be shared by Saroo Brierley, while Malaysian socio-political author and activist Marina Mahathir will reveal how she’s inspired

Animal Sanctuaries as Healing Havens By Ines Wynn That animals have a salutary and therapeutic effect on humans is a fact that has been long established. Early Greek history records the use of horses to benefit severely ill people. The first clinically documented instance of equine therapy for physical and mental disorders dates from the 17th century. By 1792 animal assisted therapy (AAT) was already established in England at the York Retreat, an asylum run by the Society of Friends which used ordinary farm animals as part of their therapy program to help the mentally ill. The famous Bethlem hospital in London also used the practice to a certain degree. The benefits of AAT have been debated ever since.

therapeutic approach for recovering addicts and others in need of healing. A kitten shelter close to Ubud has several programs benefiting lonely kids and those in orphanages. Even among the Balinese communities these types of programs enjoy some resonance.

What exactly is AAT? Animal assisted therapy is a healing practice that uses animals as a medium of therapy in order to improve social, emotional, cognitive and physical functioning. The premise is that animals are a non-threatening aid used in an established medical program. Many kinds of animals are used, mostly dogs, cats, horses, and dolphins depending on the program and the trust and comfort level of the patient. AAT can be used to treat mental and physical conditions alike. It has been noted that animals deflect the anxiety associated with the authority or control of the therapist. In establishing a bond between the animal and the patient, the therapist reverts to a less authoritarian role. There are many ways AAT can be effective. For children or adults with physical challenges horses and dolphins are used as an aid in therapy. In palliative care, depression or long term illness dogs and cats can bring some solace to the patients. The therapy has also been used to help in treating drug and behavioural addictions.

The animal sanctuary in Desa Perean Kangin, to the southeast of Baturiti has been under development since 2011 by Ubud based Linda Buller who is a recognised artist, doctor in Chinese medicine, philanthrope, founder of BARC and the Change Drug Rehabilitation Centre. That she is an animal lover is beyond the pale. BARC, the rescue and dog shelter in Ubud is well known. What is less well known is that Linda also established the Warrior Legacy sanctuary in Tabanan which plays a role in the therapeutic programs embraced by the Change Drug Rehabilitation Centre. The 127-are sanctuary is a heaven for abused, abandoned, behaviourally challenged and generally difficult to adopt animals. It is located in a remote rural area, surrounded by jungle j g and woods. It is an ered bodies ideal environment for battered and injured souls, human and animal alike, to come to rest, be healed and get a new lease on life far away from human mistreatment. The sanctuary at present shelters 134 dogs, 26 monkeys, 2 horses and 3 pigs.

AAT has its proponents and detractors. There is some controversy in regards to its benefits. Some argue that the therapeutic value of this practice has not been seriously studied and therefore not firmly established. However, it does not take much debate to concede that for certain types of patients this is a very valuable part of their healing process. Children with autism, Downs Syndrome and cerebral palsy have demonstrated an increased attention span and confidence level when engaged in animal assisted therapy. Patients with physical ailments often respond positively to hippo therapy in which horses are used to help them gain better mobility.

Each of those animals can tell their own story, mostly of abuse, abandonment, illness or handicap. The dog stories are all too familiar in Bali. At the sanctuary you will see many dogs with missing limbs, scurvy coats, behavioural problems, aggressive behaviours but also sweethearts with trust in their eyes and a yearning to be petted and loved. The horses, I am told, came from Denpasar dokar drivers who abused their animals to the point of collapse. They came to the centre barely able to stand, ribs sticking through their coats and generally in bad health. Thanks to the care of the sanctuary’s dedicated staff they are being nursed back to health and can spend their final days in a lushly green, comfortable and loving environment.

Part of the controversy also revolves around the use of captive animals like dolphins in AAT. Some activists maintain the position that animals should never be coerced and used as tools for the benefit of humans. This stance may appear somewhat extreme, especially considering that animals used in AAT are not abused or maltreated. One could even argue that the benefits and compassion factors work both ways: the animals sense their usefulness and create an empathic bond with the patient, who in turn, communicates their desire for animal empathy.

The animals are cared T fo for by a full-time staff o 6 and it is very of a apparent that they care about the animals in their charge. The animals have plenty of play and run room. The dogs are housed in w large kennels for a compound with those that need to be isolated due to illnes illness or aggressiveness, a roomy house where they find shelter and companionship and a big yard where they can play. Some of the problem dogs are let out in a special green area where they can run and exercise their excess energy safely away from other animals.

i ffor animals i l a learned l d emotion? ti ? We W humans h Is compassion still have trouble sometimes appreciating animals as our cocreations, an entity to be treated humanely and compassionately, rather than be mastered and controlled. The Judeo-Christian tradition of belief that humans have been given superiority, mastery and control over the animal world is hard to eradicate. The interpretation has sometimes veered into the cynical and to the detriment of the animals. But control should not mean abuse and people should realise that animas do have a soul, an instinct and an intellect that needs to be reckoned with. Humanity’s compassion towards animals is a measure of their emotional and spiritual development. Gandhi famously said that if you want to get the measure of a man, you should look how he treats the animals in his charge. AAT in Bali. A few community service organizations in Bali practice animal assisted therapy and channel the healing properties of connecting with animals into programs that benefit adults and children alike to overcome addictions, ss. depression and loneliness. One animal sanctuary in Tabanan, home to a coterie of some 170 abandoned, mistreated, sick and rescued animals -including a hedgehog, horses, monkeys and dogs- is not only a refuge for the animals but also a

The monkeys have their own enclosure and playground, complete with a pool to cavort in, trees to climb on, equipment to play on and shelters to sleep in. The pigs, affectionately called Olie, Romeo and Juliet, have a delightful mud area to muck around in and a roomy shelter to sleep in. One of the pigs is blind but that does not prevent him from leading a happy grunt-life and he is appropriately obese. All animals are under care off the th BARC veterinarian t i i and d they th are sterilised when arriving at the centre. T The Villa Kitty Programs – Villa Kitty’s founder Elizabeth H Henzell has a couple of long established programs that benefit ch children and disadvantaged children. Her “Sunday Lunch un under the Mango Tree” at Villa Kitty are wondrous occasions fo adults and children alike to come, have lunch in a garden for se setting and play with the kittens and cats that are sheltered th there, 143 at last count. Elizabeth thoroughly understands th healing power that emanates from animals and she started the th “Every Child deserves a Kitten” at the SOS Children’s the V Village in Tabanan in 2013. The children in this program are ei either orphaned or children whose parents do not have the

funds to care for them or pay for their schooling. The idea was to give the children the opportunity to enjoy the love of a cat to compensate somewhat for the feelings of loneliness and missing their parents. Each home was offered a vaccinated and sterilised kitten, or two. The children were given the responsibility of caring for the kittens. The orphanage now has 14 cats in eight of their homes and they are a great part of the children’s lives. Every 3 weeks, Villa Kitty staff visit the orphanage to bring food for the cats and check their health. The program has been a huge success. They live in safety with children in homes surrounded by beautiful gardens. This was an important part of the decision. The program is expensive to run and yet, Elizabeth would love to expand it as she realizes the benefits these cats have on the children who have lost their parents. At the same time she is not hesitant to refuse interested organisations if she thinks the kittens will not be treated well. Besides this program, Elizabeth hosts school outings for Be visiting school children at Villa Kitty. The children are split in vis groups of 4 or 5 to interact with the cats and kittens. In the gr past Villa Kitty has also run educational programs at various pa schools to teach the children respect and compassion towards sc animals; however, it became apparent that the children learned an so much more when spending time with the Villa Kitty cats in their own safe surroundings. The Villa Kitty staff are very vocal th about the cruelty in taking tiny kittens from their mothers and ab abandoning them. They believe that children are taught cruelty ab and so it can be ‘untaught’. Wherever she can Elizabeth is an keen to educate youngsters on the plight of the voiceless Bali ke cats. Amongst the Villa Kitty staff are 10 youngsters who come in before or after school to spend time playing with the kittens or giving the older feline residents some cuddles. And in return the children enjoy the comfort and satisfaction they receive from the purrers. To i l l u s t r a t e t h e therapeutic benefits of interacting with cats, Elizabeth relates the story of the recent adoption of Theodore, one of Villa Kitty’s most famous cats. d almost dead in a garbage bin in Theodore was found Kerobokan prison and nursed back to health. He was adopted by a little boy who had been diagnosed with atypical autism, whose mother had researched the benefits of animals for her son and came to Villa Kitty to see how this would help. Far from running from this excited boy, Theodore and other cats purred around his legs, allowing him to give them a combination of rather uncoordinated pats. An overseas family comes once or twice a year to Ubud at the instance of their seventeen year old who spends every d day at Villa Kitty. This delightful young girl tells everyone that sshe is autistic and that cats ‘saved her life’. Another young intellectually impaired boy visiting with his family had the entire sstaff in stitches. This young boy sat down in the centre of the W West Village room and was blanketed with cats. The sheer jjoy this child was experiencing from the actions of these intuitive cats had everyone laughing. Elizabeth also tells of the sadness that is a cat shelter. There are times, she says, when seeing the pain the cats and kittens a ssuffer can be so acute she needs to find herself a moment of q quiet in her home. The minute she puts her head on the pillow sshe is comforted by any number of her cat family. What is e extraordinary about this, she says, is that the cats seem to be able to differentiate between when she is just tired and when a sshe is feeling the sadness that comes with saying goodbye tto a kitten who has lost the fight for life due to the cruelty of humans. Compassion can go a long way in helping the healing process we sometimes need for ourselves. The emotion itself appears to stimulate endorphins, one of the important elements associated with the feeling of well-being. In experiencing compassion and empathy with our fellow animal beings, we create healing waves for ourselves.

Local News Australian man detained after causing chaos at Bali airport An Australian man was detained for creating a scene at Bali’s international airport on Tuesday (July 18), shouting and screaming as he stood on the narrow outer edge of a ledge in the departure hall. After a 90-minute standoff near the Coffee Club outlet, the man, identified as 46-year-old Gregory Butler, was wrestled back to safety by another man who had tried to negotiate with him. As he was taken away by authorities, Butler told reporters he had never intended to jump from the ledge. “I didn’t want to jump. I was standing on the edge. Would you jump?” Butler was quoted by Perth Now as saying. Instead, he suggested that he had been trying to highlight corrupt Australian government officials. “I wanted to bring attention to (a) certain situation regarding government officials. That’s why I thought I could do it,” Butler reportedly said. Authorities later said that anti-depressants had been found in Butler’s bag and he had been taken to hospital for medical psychiatric tests. Butler had reportedly also caused the cancellation of an AirAsia flight on Monday. Airport officials said Butler had been on flight AK379 from Denpasar to Kuala Lumpur on Monday night. As the plane was taxiing, Butler reportedly knocked on the cockpit door, saying someone wanted to kill him. The pilot decided to turn back and the flight was cancelled. Butler was kept overnight at the airport authority office for investigations. [Channel NewsAsia July 19, 2017] Toddler will never recover after near drowning in Bali pool The toddler airlifted to Australia after being found at the bottom of a pool in Bali on Sunday is not responding to medical treatment. Kawa Sweeney’s family have been told the accident has left the three-year-old brain dead. The family, from Newport on Sydney’s northern beaches, were in Bali on a working holiday when the tragedy occurred. Kawa was flown from Bali to Perth where she was being treated at Princess Margaret Hospital. A family spokeswoman has told media Kawa has been declared brain dead by medical staff. She was pulled unresponsive from a pool at the family’s Balinese villa on Sunday and resuscitated by a doctor from Perth who was staying at the same resort. It took nearly two hours for the little girl to receive further medical treatment. Her parents now face the heartbreaking decision of when to turn off the girl’s life support. Kawa was staying at the villa with her parents, homewares entrepreneur Dee Tang and artist Desmond Sweeney, and baby sister Rafa. It is believed the pool was unfenced. The family, who is originally from Perth, received overwhelming support from the public to fly her to Perth for treatment. After issues with their travel insurance Ms Tang and Mr Sweeney turned to social media in a plea to raise $42,000 to get their daughter on a plane to Perth. An online campaign had raised nearly $70,000 in less than 24 hours and Kawa was flown to Perth on Monday. [Cessnock Advertiser July 27, 2017] 3 die as car full of tourists plunges into Lake Batur A group of domestic tourists attempting to visit the traditional Bali Adat Village of Trunyan on Lake Batur ended tragically when their Suzuki APV vehicle left the unimproved road and plunged into the waters of the lake on Monday, July 17, 2107. As reported by DenPost, three passengers died at the scene, while three more passengers escaped injury. The group from Tangerang in West Java plunged into the lake at 4:00 pm on the Monday while returning from the ancient village of Trunyan. Eyewitnesses say the car stalled while climbing a lakeside road, slid backward down the road and over a steep embankment before sinking in 20-meters of water. As the vehicle moved towards the water’s edge four jumped from the Suzuki APV while three others remained on board as the car fell down a 30-meter embankment and drowned. A local villager who witnessed the accident said the car stalled while ascending a hill, reversed before leaving the road and rolling side-over-side before plunging into the lake and sinking to a depth of 20 meters. Perishing in the accident, in addition to the driver, were female passengers Marpuah (65) and Rita Ningsih (50). Surviving the accident were Mistahul Jana (female, 25), Septia Dwi Cahaya (female, 10) and Adinda Nazua-karisma (female, 13). Trunyan is a remote Bali Aga village on the shore of Lake Batur that predates the Hindu settlement of Bali and includes unusual traditions not found in other parts of Bali. Shrouded in mysticism and mystery, Trunyan is famed for its practice of neither cremating or burying its dead, choosing instead to leave the corpses of the dead under trees to decompose exposed to the elements. In response to the tragedy, the villagers at Trunyan are in the process of organizing a purification ceremony involving every member of the local community. The estimated cost of Rp. 20 million needed for the offerings will be provided by donations made by village members. Two of the escapees have been arrested, however Davidson and Malaysian man Tee Kok King remain at large. The now deactivated crowd funding page “Fund a Fugitive”, which appeared over the weekend asking people to “Dig deep like did”, was believed to have been set up by Davidson’s friends, going by the pseudonym Beanna Winner. It raised only $65 of its $50,000 goal, which site administrators have refunded, according to News Corp. GoFundMe said it acted quickly to close down the account as soon as it was brought to their attention. “This campaign violated GoFundMe’s terms of service. The campaign in question was quickly removed from the site and any donations have been automatically refunded,” GoFundMe’s head of communications Kelly Galvin said Tuesday.

Italian student nabbed for drug abuse in Bali Personnel of the Denpasar Police in Bali nabbed an Italian student, identified as Jan Andrea Jentilini (25), for alleged drug abuse. “Police arrested the (Italian) student in a house located at Badung District of Kuta Utara area, Bali,” according to I Wayan Arta Ariawan, police commissioner here on Saturday. Ariawan stated that the police made the arrest after receiving information from people about a foreign national found to be involved in drug abuse in the area where the Italian student was staying. “The drugs consumed (by Jentilini) is the Japa-japa tobacco type. After examining, we found that this tobacco was classified as narcotics. Hence, we arrested the user for questioning,” the police officer revealed. Results of questioning stated that that the Italian student bought the Japa-japa tobacco type worth Rp100 thousand from a man, identified by his initial as SK, who is still at large. Ariawan further noted that the police confiscated the Japa-japa tobacco type weighing 0.45 grams. Jentilini confessed to have consumed the Japa-japa tobacco three times for personal use, the police disclosed, adding that he was found to have consumed such kind of drugs two years ago. [Antara News July 23, 2017] Kerobokan prison raided: phones, blades and marijuana uncovered Phones, blades, and marijuana were among the contraband that turned up during a raid on Bali’s notorious Kerobokan Prison last night. A joint team of 625 personnel from Bali Police and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) stormed the place, sweeping 14 blocks, targeting mobile devices especially. The raid started around 7:15pm and was finished by 9pm, said Deputy Chief of Police Brig. Alit Widana. Two stashes of marijuana, a package of suspected methamphetamine, four bongs, three ecstasy pills, 24 phones, and 16 sharp weapons, including eight knives were found, reports Tribun Bali. “We will bring the evidence to Badung Police for analysis,” Widana said, explaining that the raid was done to break the chain of narcotics circulation between the prison and the network outside. Kerobokan Prison, located in a densely populated area, close to some of the island’s most famous tourist spots, is infamous for being a hub in Bali’s drug trade. “Our main goal was to actually find their communication tools. So that those in the prison cannot communicate with their outside network.” Kerobokan is severely overcrowded and understaffed. An Australian TV crew with unprecedented access inside last month found that there were only eight guards on duty for 1,300 prisoners-in a facility originally designed for just 300 inmates. Clearly evidencing the prison’s facility and security shortcomings was a jail break by four foreign inmates last month, on June 19. Two of the inmates were found shortly after in East Timor and sent back to Kerobokan, but Australian Shaun Davidson and Malaysian Tee Kok King remain on the run, the former hunted by Interpol. Davidson, who has become a social media sensation since his escape from the Bali prison, actually appeared to have access to Facebook while locked up, posting a live video from inside the prison walls. Given the raid’s findings, it sure comes as no surprise now that the Aussie was able to get online. [Coconuts Bali July 19, 2017] Bali official denies dog meat report A recent Australian media investigation which reported Bali food vendors are serving unwitting tourists dog meat are just lies designed to smear the popular resort island, a local government official said. “It is not true that dog meat is sold to tourists, it is only people who want to be provocative and bring down Bali destinations,” I Made Badra, the Head of Badung Regency Tourism Office, told Antara on Monday, July 17. A report from Australia’s state news agency ABC released in June revealed evidence, provided by animal rights group Animals Australia, which showed a local satay vendor misleading tourists by telling customers the meat was chicken, not dog. Badra suggested the report had been motivated by players from other tourism spots which compete against Bali. “Bali is now the world’s best tourist destination and defeats other countries, resulting in competition with a number of countries,” he said. But, the claims have been taken seriously by other Balinese government agencies who met for a summit last week to outlaw the practice.

It is believed a man named Jason Lee Marzoli is behind the online funding account, and also claims to be the administrator of the Shaun Davidson Facebook fan page. Before it was shut down, the GoFundMe page stated (sic): “If u have loved Shauns ‘catch me if u can’ antics as much as we have so far and just like us u want to keep this hilarious saga going then donate.” “Dig deep for australias most loveable fugitive Shaun Davidson as he dug deep aswell lol. Don’t crus the glory be a part of the story donate hell appreciate.”

The Human and Health Forum in Denpasar saw officers from Bali’s Veterinary Health Office, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Balinese Tourism Board draft recommendations to end the slaughter of dogs. [Indonesia Expat July 19, 2017]

Davidson, who was going to be freed in less than three months, denied on his Facebook account he has been taunting police with his posts. “I’m definitely not a public threat as Interpol would have u believe,” he wrote last Wednesday. “Im (sic) just having some fun and a laugh I’m living my life just trying to make the best out of a bad situation it’s always better to laugh than anything else.” [News7 July 18, 2017]

Four tourists at Nusa Dua ‘water blow’ escape serious injury when struck by rogue wave Four foreign tourists suffered injuries then a rogue wave washed over them at the famed “water blow ” located at the tip of Nusa Dua on Sunday, July 16, 2017. The wave struck the four while they were standing on the walkway near the “water blow” tossing them onto nearby coral resulting in cuts and abrasions. Nusa Bali quotes the operational chief at ITDC, Made Pariwijaya, who confirmed the accident. Pariwijaya said similar accidents have occurred in the past when visitors ignored cautionary signs barring access to certain areas near the “water blow.” During the latest accident on Sunday, July 16, 2017, two tourists from Germany and two from Holland were swept onto the coral by a wave. Two of the tourist required treatment at the BIMC-Siloam Hospital in Nusa Dua. Guards at the “water blow” said they had warned the group about venturing too close to the water’s edge just moments before the accident occurred. Most accidents at the “water blow” take place when tourists ignore signs in place when they are busy making “selfies” and venture onto the exposed reef to facilitate a better shot. Improvements being put in place at the “water blow” include life-saving rings on stand-by and the construction of a new walkway to be dubbed the “Pathway of Love.” [www.balidiscovery.com July 23, 2017]
