There’s No Doubt Ubud Is A Mecca For All Things Spiritual You’ll find a yoga class every 10 steps, retreats promising transformative experiences for the body mind and soul abound and one is spoilt for choice when considering alternative healing practices. People from all over the world are drawn there to tap into the underlying spiritual hum. You’re tempted yet intimidated, wondering if you have what it takes to join this crowd. In fact, when you check your spiritual checklist it looks a little like this…. u Lining up chakras? No idea where to start. u You’re the one at the back of the yoga class making a timid little ‘mmmm…’ sound that barely registers amongst the deep reverberating ‘ohmmmm…..’ being chanted by your fellow yogis. u You like the idea of meditation but after three minutes you find yourself thinking about what’s on Netflix. u Honestly, the most spiritual moment you’ve had recently is reading your horoscope with a cup of chai. So you’ll be thrilled to know Ubud has a new reason for you to put aside your spiritual self-doubts. A Sound Healing session at The Pyramids of Chi is powerful and personal. And you won’t be alone if you’re new to Sound Healing. You’ll be joining a group of people from around the world made up of first timers and returning visitors. You’ll also be relieved to know there’s no pressure for you to ‘perform’. In fact you’re best to have no expectations of yourself. All you need to do is listen. Really listen.
Slipping off your shoes, you’re invited to enter the semi dark space of the Pyramid. Mattresses with a pillow and bolster are laid out in beautiful order, with enough distance between each one to allow personal space. All you need to do is get comfortable, place a small pillow filled with sacred volcanic sand on your eyes and be open to what may come.
The lights go down and the Gong Masters take over. For the next hour or so you get to lose yourself in the ethereal sounds from the ancient instruments reverberating around the Pyramids. Let the power of sound drown out messy thoughts, distractions and self-doubts. The state of ‘less thinking, more feeling’ takes over. The experience is a deeply personal one and can be physical, emotional or spiritual. You may get some clarity around an intention, possibly have a few tears, feel an indescribable uplifting of the spirit or simply enjoy the most delicious relaxation that serves you better than a few hours of sleep. Everyone’s experience is different. Everyone’s measure of ‘spiritual success’ is different, so don’t go judging yourself or comparing to others. According to Wikipedia, ‘there is no single, widely agreed upon definition of spirituality’. So by the end of the session those ‘am I spiritual enough’ self-doubts will seem ridiculous. Where you’re at with your spirituality today is OK. You are YOU. And that’s OK.
Imagine this….
MY TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST VISIT :
Advertorial
u You don’t need the latest in yoga gear. Wear loose comfortable clothing. The temperature is pleasant inside the Pyramid. u Do drink lots of water before you arrive and for a few hours following your session. Your body will love you for it. u Snorers? They’ve got it covered. A discreet tap to the sole of your foot will bring you back into consciousness and let you adjust your breathing. u No WiFi so turn off the phone. Not just during your session. Your memory should be about what went on in your own body and mind. Stay in the NOW. u Don’t rush. Allow at least 2 hours. Soak up the grounds, enjoy the fab food in the café, talk to others or find a place to be silent. u I walked there via a footpath through the rice fields. My ‘wander’ took about an hour with stops for a fresh coconut water and chats to locals along the way. I arrived in a relaxed state of mind. PYRAMIDS OF CHI The Pyramids of Chi is an oasis of calm, with a dose of mystery and intrigue on the side. A place where you should expect the unexpected. The Facts: Open daily 8.30am – 6.30pm Sound Healing Sessions 11am & 3pm. Price: Rp300,000pp Delicious food and drinks all day at café. Serves wine & beer. Get there on the free hourly shuttle from Ubud Palace (10 mins) or take a beautiful walk through the rice fields along the Sari Organic Walk (45mins) Bookings Ok to drop in for the Sound Healing Sessions, but best to book. Bookings are essential for special Full Moon events. They’re popular and places are limited. Check the website for the full range of workshops and sessions. Siapa... ? Arlo Hennings has been an aficionado of Indonesian jazz and other styles of indigenous music since 2011. The curator of Indojazzia website, Facebook page and record label, Arlo has more than 45 years in the music business in Indonesia and abroad. He has helped many Indonesian musicians and continues to do so with their music business needs. He was the first foreigner to manage an Indonesian progressive jazz fusion band and was also the music business coordinator for the New York based Moonjune records, which has released 20 Indonesian progressive jazz CDs. Arlo also publishes his own music videos and collaborative works with Indonesian musicians. His career memoir Guitarlo has been translated from its original English into Indonesian. Arlo currently lives with his Indonesian wife in Pandaan, East Java.
Arlo Hennings: Indonesian Jazz By Bill Dalton Jazz in Indonesia, which has been a major project for a number of years. The book is a study of jazz in Indonesia, past, present and future. I owe it to Terry’s legacy to do something with it. Afterhours Books Indonesia and the British publishing house Equinox have indicated an interest in it. Do different ethnic groups in Indonesia play different kinds of jazz? Ethno jazz emerged around 1989. Bubi Chen, credited with adding an Indonesian flavor to jazz music, led the way. Following Chen, groups like Krakatau, a world music/pop/ jazz fusion jazz group toured 60 countries in the 90s. More followed but with less success. Today, to a limited degree,
How long has Western-style jazz been a part of the modern Indonesian music scene? Big Band Swing arrived in Batavia as early as the 1920s. In the ‘50s, Bubi Chen (1938–2012), a pianist widely recognized as the ‘Godfather’ of Indonesian jazz, spent two years in the USA studying jazz piano under the tutelage of Teddy Wilson, sometimes accompanist for Billie Holiday. During the ‘50s and ‘60s classical music was considered high class and jazz “low class;” to be caught playing it invited scorn. President Sukarno in the mid-sixties even declared a ‘war against the Beatles’ and other western influenced music which was considered ‘subversive.’ However, despite an unwelcome start Indonesian jazz has survived, albeit for a niche audience, and has even given the world a jazz piano prodigy from Bali, Joey Alexander.
What’s the story behind the Indojazzia website? The Indojazzia website and its components were joint ventures between the late Terry Collins and I. We were partners in all sorts of mischief from blogs about Indonesian music to our own Indonesian record label. Terry did the writing and I handled the business. Terry and I visited the first Indonesian record label museum in Solo, Lokananta only to find their archives were plundered during the reformasi, leaving a vast historical record collection lost. This experience gave us the idea of publishing A History of
How difficult is it for a competent musician to make a living? Local jazz musicians have few outlets other than occasional gigs at a wedding or corporate function where people can buy their recordings. However, our social media offers a portal for the many musicians seeking international exposure as well as jazz aficionados abroad newly aware of the astonishing creativity to be discovered here. But jazz is a niche market and a tough sell. Many jazz celebrities come from wealth. They don’t have to worry about earning a living! How big is the jazz scene on Bali? In Bali, there are approximately 50 venues that pay a fee to support a jazz community of approximately 40 professional level musicians. The jazz scene in Bali is subject to seasonal tourist traffic. It’s a difficult scene for a newbie to break into. Most play western covers. Is music piracy as serious a problem in Indonesia as it is in the U.S.?
you can hear original jazz fusion with various ethnic influences. From Sundanese and Samarinda, to jazzed-up gamelan and Avant-Garde, small groups of Indonesian musicians continue to break out of the mainstream to explore ethno fusion.
What was your first encounter with Indonesian jazz? Working with an Indonesian organizer, Franki Fraden in Ubud at a venue called the Ubud Concert Series. After meeting jazz players like Koko Horsoe and Erik Sondhy, I moved on with Pak Raden in 2012 to be involved with his IMEX (Indonesian Music Expo) in Nusa Dua where I met the owner of MoonJune records Leonardo Pavkovic. It was through Leonardo I was introduced to a group of Jakarta jazz progressives, Dwiki Dharmawan, Tohpati, Dewa Budjana (Bali), Agam Hamzah, Riza Arshad, Tesla Manaf, and “I Know You Well Miss Clara” (IKYWMC). In 2016, I released my first Indonesian jazz CD with Balinese keyboard player Erik Sondhy.
staffed by professional musicians, many of whom were mentored by venerable ‘seniors.’ However, they do not offer any kind of music business curriculum like American schools require.
What music have you published? I’ve published my own music videos as well as collaborative works with Indonesian musicians. I’m releasing Eric Sondhy’s second CD The Gift of Love. My new CD Jawa Warrior is a fusion/90s tribute album consisting of ambient progressive jazz and Indonesian influenced soundscapes that was released on December 19th, 2018. Where can one listen to jazz nowadays? With access to the Internet and the growth in Indonesia’s economy over the past 30 years, ‘jazz cafes’ come and go but new start-ups like the Motion Blue in Jakarta and the Ryoshi in Denpasar survive. In terms of jazz festivals, there are approximately 30 of varying sizes. Many of them feature (and I have been to all of them) all genres of music, not just jazz. (It’s also important to note that Indonesians call anything “Jazz” that they think is cool.) The most noteworthy - depending on your taste - is the Jakarta Jazz Festival, which has recently suffered a financial restructuring. Where can a talented young musician study jazz?
Piracy is worse in Indonesia where it has finally reached the 100% piracy level. With the lack of an enforced copyright law you can see the results. Musicians make money by playing live or for commercial sponsors. CDs are a promotional item. A tourist at the bar may like the band and buy their CD. CD sales make up a small part of the Indonesian creative economy. It was not like that 10 years ago. Another part of a musician’s income is publishing royalties, which is another problem beyond the scope of this interview. Where can one learn more about Indonesian jazz? Several online sites offer jazz information, such as WartaJazz.com and Jazzuality.com. Indojazzia Facebook is still live and remains the only foreigner-based online portal for Indonesian music happenings. Where can you be contacted? Kuningan/Munggu Mekotekan Ritual – 5 January 2019
Ten days after the Galungan festivities comes Kuningan which marks the end of this ritual cycle of celebrating the victory of good over evil. At the traditional village of Munggu
in Mengwi Kuningan is also the day of the Mekotekan Ritual. This ceremony is an enactment of the end of the Blambangan war, fought sometime in the 17th century between the kingdom of Mengwi and East Java’s Blambangan kingdom. Legend has it that the Mekotekan ritual was conducted to welcome the kingdom’s soldiers back from the battlefield after fighting the Blambangan battle. On their way to Mengwi they passed Munggu village, where local residents cheered them as the winners of the war. The tradition involves men carrying long wooden poles which they stack to form a huge pyramid. Some men will climb the pyramid to “face off” with each other whilst cheered on by the onlookers. This ritual is an important cultural event for the village of Munggu. Visitors are welcome to watch the proceedings, though they are not invited to participate as it is considered disrespectful to the Balinese people. When Where

Ubud News TRANSITION – ANAK UNIK After eight years, the founders and project leaders of the Ubudbased Sukacita Foundation can look back on a significant contribution to the development of education and care for children with intellectual disabilities in Indonesia. Mila van der Meer and Marieke Nijland are passing the baton to the team at Yayasan Anak Unik, an organisation that has evolved from their original foundation, taking its name and vision from their book, Anak Unik (Unique Child). When these two inspiring Dutch women started their Bail journey, children with intellectual disabilities were often described as “stupid” or “dumb in many Asian families, villages and educational settings. Sukacita Foundation worked in schools and other educational settings across the Indonesian archipelago, taking part in national and regional planning, to share the message that every child deserves to be seen as unique and is capable of opening our eyes to a new perspective on the world. The name Sukacita Foundation will disappear, but the body of work they have created to help educators, including books, posters and visual communication tools, will remain available for download on the new interactive website www.sukacita.org. LIVES TRANFORMED Christmas time and Galungan are good times to share stories about hope (harapan). Check out the awardwinning film about the former “begging women” of Muntigunung, as a powerful example of hope gradually becoming reality.
Yayasan Muntigunung, a foundation set up by a small group, continues to transform the lives of women in this small, subsistence-level community on the slopes of Mount Agung, where the nearest fresh water used a fivehour walk away before rainwater tanks were installed for most houses. If you are interested in trekking to and through the tiny Muntigunung village, buying their locally produced and grown products and learning more about their inspiring stories of change and hope, visit www.muntigunung.com and watch the video Harapan, at www.markorandelovic. com/portfolio/harapan/.

FIVELEMENTS GOES NORTH Congratulations to Ubud home -grown wellness retreat centre, Fivelements, who have exported their successful formula to open a vibrant ‘urban retreat’ centre in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.
Rurung Festival Peliatan Chairman, Wayan Sudiarsa, said the theme of this year’s festival was “Lelaku Tani” or “purpose in life”, an expression that implies the importance of continuous learning and a conscious awareness of our individual roles and responsibilities. Over three days, the festival reflected on “Malam Tradisi” (the olden times), examined “Malam Modern” (today’s situation) and explored visions for the future in “Malam Kontemporer”.
Fivelements is a great supporter of cultural and community activities in Bali, playing host to each year’s TEDX UBUD talks, amongst other innovative and enriching programs.
Artists and children’s sessions, photo essays, explorations of movement and advice on traditional plants filled the days’ programs, with performances by traditional gamelan orchestras and two modern bands, Unbro’ken and De Gess and Friend Acoustic in the evenings.
Fivelements has won over 30 international awards, spanning across hotel and resort, wellness, spa, culinary and sustainable design industries. For more info, visit www.fivelements.org.

At Home in Bali
Design ideas and inspiration for tropical living Too many things weighing you down? It’s amazing how quickly we can accumulate ‘stuff’ without realising it; it’s so much easier to bring things into our homes than to take them out. When we first bring home a new item, we find the perfect spot for it and enjoy its presence. After a while, we get used to or stop using it. Then finally, in a formidable form of self-hypnosis, we fail to see it even when in plain sight. (And don’t get me started on all that stuff hidden away out of sight and out of mind). Here’s a thought. How about reframing our New Year’s resolutions for 2019 away from common themes of eating less and exercising more, and instead cast a critical eye on what I call ‘clutter creep’ — the tendency all loved homes have to ‘collect’. The new year is the perfect time to edit your space, and lose some of that heavy home weight. Here are a few ideas on what to do in January to refresh and renew your home, and keep those intentions throughout the year.

Home Design Resolutions for The New Year By Ibu Jenny
anything with moth holes, shoulder pads or the lingering scent of mould. Put aside items that don’t fit, are the wrong colour, or were an insane under-the-influence impulse purchase; donate them to a yayasan, or arrange a clothes swap with friends. (We’ve been doing this for a few years now; it’s great fun to gather over tea, cakes and stronger stuff, try on new items, and take home a new-to-you wardrobe. One person’s cast-offs are another’s treasures.) Change your viewpoint Once you’ve decluttered, it’s easier to see the wood for the trees. Now you can have fun moving things around. By all means rearrange the furniture if you feel like pushing the boundaries of your new space. Or freshen a room by simply changing what’s in your line of sight from the bed, sofa or dining table; shifting a few books, decorative items and plants from room to room can make all the difference.
Declutter your wardrobe Still have that too-small dress you dream of squeezing into one day? That seen-better-days shirt you might possible wear at some point? Be ruthless with your wardrobe. Bin
Be more eco-conscious Take a look at some of the eco-conscious decisions you could make around the home, and explore how you could reduce the amount of rubbish your household generates. If you haven’t already, start composting kitchen scraps. Buy a Kopernik filter so you can do away with Aqua bottles. Recycle where possible, and engage an organisation like Eco Bali for responsible waste collection. Simplify your inner space Congratulations — you’ve cleared so much stuff that may have energetically been weighing you down! So how about spending quality time in your spruced-up space with a digital detox? For a few hours or a few days every week, sign off social media, switch off your smartphone, unplug the computer…. and reconnect with the simple pleasure of enjoying precious ‘down’ time.
Declutter your space Be relentless! Challenge yourself to ditch, recycle or donate anything you haven’t used, or that hasn’t seen the light of day in the past year. Kick-start by looking for things that you’ll find easy to let go, such as expired foods and medicines, dated magazines and dog-eared books, and anything that’s broken, stained, chipped or cracked. Then tackle one room at a time…or even one surface if the thought of an entire room sounds overwhelming. Think of this as purging anything unloved. Ask “Do I love this item? Do I use it regularly?” Or “Does this give me joy?” as Marie Kondo advocates — she of best-selling The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying fame and, according to Time magazine, one of the world’s 100 most influential people. If the answer is no, or if you hesitate even slightly, remove it. Clear away/purge anything that no longer fits the function, suits your aesthetic, has any relevance to your lifestyle, or gives you a jolt of pleasure. Of these, gift to a friend anything that holds meaning or value to you, so it can continue to give joy (just to someone else). Anything else with life left in it, give to the Smile Shop, BAWA or yayasans collecting for vulnerable communities in need.
Adopt the 1-2 rule Think twice about what you choose to bring in. Keep your space uncluttered throughout the year by committing to the “one in, two out” rule i.e. for every new item you add to your space, get rid of two items. Just had to buy that Jenggala bowl? Donate or ditch a couple of plates that have seen better days. Acquired a must-read book from Ganesha? Pay it forward by giving a few finished novels to their second-hand section for someone else to enjoy.
Let your space support your personal aims Now your space is streamlined, see how it can be tweaked further to support your own resolutions for the New year. Want to develop a daily at-home yoga or meditation practice? Designate an unused corner of a room as a permanent place for your mat and meditation alter. Drawn to spending more time in creative pursuits? Repurpose a space – or even a surface – as your designated painting/ sewing area. The simplest act of making space will help keep you on track. Stay clutter-free all year round Once you’ve got organised, intend to stay organised! Resolve to continue letting go throughout the year. As a reminder, keep a donation box in your wardrobe, so you can immediately put to one side anything you come across that you no longer use, fit or want. And when the box is full, donate it to the Smile Shop.
After all that decluttering, how about cleaning, do I hear you ask? I am taking UK Sunday Times columnist India Knight’s advice: “If you want to clean something, go and lie in the bath with a glass of wine.” A toast to making resolutions you can stick with! The Frugal Balinist Q Live healthier cheaper
Why battle traffic to visit doctors for health consultations that do not necessitate therapy or a medical procedure? Have you ever tried to contact a doctor by telephone? Thankfully, a growing number of Indonesian physicians are using social media, especially blogs and Twitter, to offer a wide diversity of reliable non-diagnostic health advice and even live-chat services to thousands of followers who ask questions not just about nutrition, children’s health, diet, sexual health, cholesterol or diabetes, but also about deeper medical issues. Tanya Dokter (Ask the Doctor) and KlikDokter let people send questions about health problems that are answered by general practitioners and specialists, usually within 24 hours. Optimal medical examinations cannot be carried out online, so doctors will not make diagnoses, as they don’t want to bear any legal liability. Symptoms of a disease might be misread if they are being described through live-chat or email. If a question indicates the need for further examination, patients will be advised to see a physician in person to ensure accuracy.
Q Island-wide hikes
Leading up to the upcoming major holidays of Galungan, Kuningan (starting 05Jan19), and Tahun Baru (New Years), the city streets of every district in Bali will be blocked off to make way for 24-hour night markets (pasar sengol) where all manner of snacks, clothing, toys, shoes, tools, cheap appliances and sundries are sold at local prices (if you bargain). The very best food stalls will be packed. During Manis Kuningan, the day after Kuningan, families escape en masse to crowded high-altitude environments like Tirtagangga, Kebon Raya, Kintamani and Yeh Panes. This is cockfighting season (musim tajen) and card-playing (ceki) season when rural Balinese families are financially stressed because of menfolks’ gambling losses (best time to buy cows, pigs and used motorcycles and cars!). Matahari, Ramayana, Robinson and Hardy’s department stores offer clearance sales (cuci gudang) of 25% to 75% off. At Bali Galleria (Kuta), Mal Galleria (Kuta) and Bali Collection (Nusa Dua), numerous promos are offered by department stores and cinemas.
Q Go electric!
Join the Green Energy movement to reduce your carbon footprint in our world. Electric ebikes (sepeda listrik) save fuel costs and reduce air pollution. These “pedalassist” bikes with integrated electric motors - a cross between a bicycle and a motorcycle - allow the rider greater speed with less effort. On motorized bikes you can
easily pedal uphill. A selection of ebikes and escooters can be seen in the Selis Bali showroom in Denpasar. Don’t forget to ask the friendly and helpful manager for a thorough list of what needs to be done for maintenance and to get the ebike ready for the required annual inspection. Selis Bali does service calls, too. Average cost of models is around Rp20 juta. With an installment payment plan, you can drive away for as little as Rp400,000 down. Address: Jl. Teuku Umar 216, Dauh Puri Kauh, Denpasar, tel: 0361-474-8205. Hours 9 am-6 pm.
Q Good sense for The Wet
To keep mosquitoes from laying eggs, add a handful of neem leaves to small pond or pools. Neem leaves will help stop mosquitoes from breeding, but won’t harm other pond creatures. Frogs, lizards and fish, especially tilapia fish, will feed on mosquito eggs and larvae. *Excess water in the wet season can be stored in ponds to prevent water laying stagnant on the ground. Rainwater can be stored in tanks, but usually tanks will not hold all of it. Extra water can be stored in the ground, in ponds and by trees that store water in their roots, trunk, branches and leaves. Dig a shallow trench around your house in places where the rain falls, then fill with gravel. Use the soil from digging the trench to make the ground higher so that the water flows away from the house. This will help keep the house dry during the wet season. Water can be run to vegetable gardens, compost pits, etc. Edges of garden pathways can also function as swales to collect and hold water. Dig new holes for trees, but leave them empty to fill with rain, which will soften the soil so that when trees are planted at the end of the wet season, they will grow better.
Q Beware the Tick.
Ticks attack dogs in between their toes and in their ears. Brush down and wash your dog with watered down shampoo regularly. Introduce Bravecto into his food which you can buy for Rp90,000/ bottle from pet shops or Hardy’s. You’ll get around 4-5 months of treatments from one bottle, enough for two dogs. For animals, the Balinese use the tick powder Bedak Doris (Rp24,000Rp45,000 depending on size bottle) and natural remedies. For example, they first remove the tick, then slice a lemon which they apply to the wound. For cows and kerbau (ox), the Balinese scrub vinegar (cuka; Rp1,500 for small bottle) onto the tick bite. They also feed their livestock whole papaya leaves which turns the animal’s blood bitter, repelling ticks. Alternatively, Sunset Vet (Kuta: tel. 0361-934-8915; Ubud: tel. 0361-975-296) for Rp100,000 will send someone around to give your dog a shot and apply treatment against ticks. BAWA is also able to give good advice as regards ticks.
By Bill Dalton thrift-conscious Javanese shoppers are always parked along the road outside. *Pie Susu is a small cake and popular Bali souvenir. It’s cheaper to buy at the factory itself on Jalan Nangka in Denpasar at Rp1,500 each. *Pusat Pernak Pernik in Ceking village near Pasar Sukawati is the place to buy bracelets, all kinds of art and decorations. *Bali Pulina in Buleleng, North Bali, is the bargain place to buy famous Balinese civet coffee. *Indonesian tourists buy Seniman brand coffee which sells at the low local price. The Balinese themselves prefer to just drink kopi palsu (adulterated coffee) like Warkop, Bali’s cheapest coffee that is mixed with ground corn and dried rice. They are not fond of real coffee like Westerners, mostly because of its high cost. Middle class Indonesians drink the Kopi Bubuk Banyuatis brand from Singaraja. The upper class favors the Kopi Bali Cap Kupu Kupu Bola Dunia brand.
Q Make shoes last!
Keep shoes on a shoetree to give perspiration and other moisture time to completely dry out. If your shoes get wet, stuff them with newspaper and let them dry slowly. Indonesians dry them in the sun. Store shoes in dry area where they can get fresh air and not mold. Give them a break; don’t wear the same pair every day. After each wearing, clean shoes with soft, dry cloth. Keep leather shoes lubricated and protected by polishing with Kiwi shoe polish (Rp16,000) regularly. Most liquid polishes contain little or no wax and may cause shoes to dry out.
Q Industry killer
Recent government regulations are very unfavorable and clearly do not support the solar industry as it imposes extra charges to people who want grid-connected solar installation. Solar panel owners are now losing 35% of their generation and make it literally impossible to sell solar panels in Indonesia. Ubud’s markets are prone to rip off people and vendors can be pushy. Prices are much lower at the souvenir shops Krishna and Jogger. The main market Pasar Ubud is pricier than Sukawati Market where not only crafts, home decorations, statuary, carving, bags, clothing and other artwork are sold, but also heaps of Indonesian-style dresses, shirts, scarves, cushions, handbags, as well as household wares go at terrific bargains. School News
Montessori School Bali Blossoms in Canggu Montessori School Bali (MSB) began as a preschool 20 years ago, and after expanding across two campuses over the years, finally moved into a one-stop, purpose-built campus in Canggu at the start of 2017.
months to three years, when students are guaranteed a place in one of our preschool classrooms. The TP runs in our Lili classroom, which like all MSB classrooms is built specifically for the age group it hosts, and again like all classrooms at MSB, it’s equipped with beautiful Montessori materials.
Plenty has happened since its opening, and plenty is set to come as the school expands towards its planned capacity.
The Lili classroom set-up changes slightly for Monday mornings for our popular Baby and Me programme, designed for babies aged through to 18 months and their carers. This once-a-week session sees parents and babies introduced to Montessori concepts and allows them to ask questions about child development to Holly White, our highly experienced 0-3 guide. This programme too has just reached capacity.
A highlight this year was the inaugural PTA Twilight Christmas Market, which saw the school throw its gates open to the general public for the first time. As the sun set over the school’s park-like grounds, dotted with flickering candles, visitors mingled to shop, meet, eat, drink and be merry. The event exceeded school expectations and we look forward to it happening on next year’s calendar, too. This year, MSB started a new Adolescent Programme (AP) with a small group of enthusiastic, long-term Montessori students. Multi-age classes are a fundamental element of the Montessori approach to education, so this will grow into a full 12- to 15-year-old class over the next few years.
Our gardens have meanwhile expanded the past year as our two lower primary and our upper primary class have set up their own plots, planting a range of fruits, vegetables and herbs. Students have enjoyed making delicious salads out of the literal fruits of their labours, which have also taught them all about exactly where their food truly comes from — nature, not the supermarket.
The AP has had a great start. Students have set up a micro-business called lil lotus coFFee, selling sustainablygrown, locally sourced coffee (and organic chocolate). One channel has been through a pop-up cafe serving an enthusiastic Friday-morning crowd at drop-off time, giving parents a chance to connect and chat. Setting up lil lotus coFFee is all about learning by doing, another fundamental Montessori concept. The students are looking forward to building a permaculture garden on campus in 2019 to really get their hands dirty! The AP also helped to raise funds and solicit donations for the survivors of the Lombok earthquakes, disasters that saw our school community pull together to pool their resources and help those in need the best way they could. They delivered much-needed supplies requested by survivors directly to them, in partnership with several parents’ businesses. The school’s Toddler Programme (TP) started last year, and has now reached capacity, with a waitlist. The TP runs four mornings per week and is for children aged around 18
Still to come: The school is developing an exciting BMX track on campus for its students, and plans to offer it as an after-school activity. One of our parents, an experienced BMX-er, is leading the design and implementation of this exciting project. His car-park demonstration of various tricks and skills with a friend earlier this year left students impressed and ready to give it a go!
The school is also moving ahead to build natural, sustainable playgrounds for its preschool and primary students. This is an ambitious project that involves sourcing sustainable recycled hardwood and building a variety of creative structures for children to really enjoy their openended outdoor play. It’s going to be worth the wait, with nothing else like it currently existing anywhere else in Bali! A feature of typical Montessori schools is allowing observers to come visit classrooms to see how our method of teaching works. Indeed at MSB, it’s a required part of our enrolment process, as we want parents to see firsthand just how different Montessori classrooms are compared to mainstream schools. If you’d like to come visit, please email us at contact@montessoribali.com, or send a WhatsApp message to +62 812 8500 4579 to make an appointment. Our school is drawing plenty of attention in the Montessori world and we were pleased to show off our campus to 20 Indonesian doctoral students from Yogyakarta last month. We are also hosting a two-day weekend refresher course for Montessori teachers from around the region in April this year. MSB has been built with a view to expand its enrolments over the next few years. As our student numbers expand to fill the current a l r e a d y - b u i l t classrooms, plans for a covered sports area are expected to be implemented, along with eventually the addition of a dedicated library, a multi-purpose room, music room, art studio, technology room and industrial kitchen. Stay tuned for more news as our school grows! Copyright © 2019 School News You can read all past articles of School News at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Letters To Bali Advertiser Bad News Travels Fast! Dear Bali Advertiser, It seems that Aussie Media have some sort of vendetta with Bali. Now on Aust+ TV they have a news item re flights being cancelled in Indonesia because of volcano eruption. IF they actually did their job properly, they would also add the actual location of the volcano in relation to the over 17,000 islands in Indonesia. But it seems that this is not as important as reporting something bad about this country constantly. Bali and the volcano are over 1,000klms apart, further than from Sydney to Melbourne or 4 times the distance from London to Paris. Same distance from Paris to Berlin. Get my drift? It is tragic what happened to the victims of Baby Krakatoa, and as humans we should all be affected by the terrible situation these people face. We all need to know what is happening and if there is some way we can help. My plea to the media in Australia is to not sensationalise the “bogan” element who ‘visit” this island for their annual holidays, but to highlight the many really great people and places that are here. There are so many ex-pats here some of them do amazing things to help the people of Indonesia and Bali. They fundraise thousands of dollars and donate hours of time and effort. They raise money to help the animals and to help mother and baby clinics in remote villages, send kids to school in villages where the income is about $2 per day, and on it goes. Bali brings out the best in most of its inhabitants. Please do not belittle that by always highlighting the not so nice side. Every place on this planet has its “not so nice” side, BUT there is only ONE BALI. The people of Bali love their island and can be seen every day in every village, with the offerings and ceremonies and temples. Have a lovely Bali day Gia Post, e-mail, fax or bring in your letters. Please address all to Letters To Bali Advertiser. Bali Advertiser will decide what to publish and will edit as needed C/E/I-02 Jan 19

The Wrap of 2018 The rush to be a part of the Bali food scene continues. As with almost anywhere else in the world those who know what they are doing succeed, and most of the others fail. 2018 has seen so many new operations open and many close, some even opening and closing in the same year... The following are some of the new places of 2018 that we have looked at, plus a few not so new that we discovered for the first time. Every year sees a new fashion that all seem to crave. Once it was to be called Mediterranean [often with no more than a pasta dish and a Greek salad], then it was Tapas [without any necessary Spanish connection]. Then it was the dry-aged beef and last year the Burger craze [irrespective of cuisine] catching up with the rest of the world. Now you find Burgers on almost every Bali menu from local cafes to 5 star restaurants. 2018 has been the year of Peruvian dishes and the edible flowers which have became fashionable with the success of René Redzepi’s incredible cuisine experiments at Copenhagen’s Noma [4 times voted the ‘Best Restaurant in the World’]. Rather ironic as flowers have been a part of Asian cuisines for centuries, The wonderful Thai Banana Flower Salad leading the way. Even in Bali stuffed zucchini blossoms had already been on menus for many years. Now a myriad of colours adorn many different dishes, across the island.
proceeding to the impressive dining room for the 8 course degustation dinner by their talented Belgian Chef Nic Vanderbeeken. Highlight of the meal for me was the Venison Wellington with foie gras, kale and a mushroom rendang sauce. Cut at the table by the chef and placed inside the ring of black truffle mash potato, honshimeji mushrooms and nasturtium leaves. The ultimate in fine dining! The original restaurant at The Viceroy was CasCades and it is still very special. Now headed by English chef Miles Belfield it offers French based cuisine but with Asian flavours. The new menu at CasCades includes some very interesting dishes such as a Quail Wellington.
Most action this year was in Ubud and Canggu [where new places opened and closed, almost daily]. There was little activity on the northern and southern coasts, Lovina and Nusa Dua although Lovina welcomed Secret Garden, only 5 tables in a very secret garden so reservations are always essential. The attraction here is for the experience as a whole. Simple, but good, food. Italianish [pasta], fish & chips, local curries and seafood plus some local Balinese [sate lilit]. Nusa Dua, another secret, Secret Place, a friendly little place that classifies their coffees as their specialty. It is very popular for breakfasts with the many who want to escape from the 5 star hotels for a change. They serve simple food, well prepared and very cheap. On offer are local and international dishes. The place is hard to find but worth the effort.
Food Courts are difficult to establish outside of a busy business district but the Ubud Food Court on Tebasaya deserves to succeed. Professionally setup, immaculately clean [unlike many food courts in the world] with a large variety of cuisines, easy to eat for less than Rp.100,000.
this concept to Sanur. Indian with a difference as the menu concentrates on food from southern India, Kerala in particular, which is where the owner originates. South Indian style potato masala is made with boiled, crumbled potatoes in mild, flavorful gravy. It is served with hot, puffed Poori’s (deep fried Indian wheat bread). Chicken Livers are marinated in spices, then pan roasted with onions & tomatoes. Kerala Beef Fry is a classic from this mostly non-Hindu Christian area. The star of this menu must be their Crab Masala [pictured], thick and rich. For me it was the all day breakfast Kerala dish that I liked most; the Poori. With its potato curry which you spoon into it, fold and eat, sublime!.
Maison is Ubud’s newest Indian restaurant, It is found in Pengosekan at the busy corner opposite the petrol station. Entrees are standard; Samosas [potato and peas in a puff pastry], Paneer [cottage cheese], etc but it is only the 2nd Indian restaurant in Bali to offer Frankies [after Gateway], a great entree, soft Indian bread rolled around a choice of fillings, vegetarian, chicken or mutton.

Further down the same street is Odette, stylish and popular Balinese and Indonesian dishes there is also a full great value. Their Middle Eastern Shakshuka is one of the International menu, including many vegetarian options. Ubud best I have ever had, a perfect brunch; eggs poached in a Taliwang is just an open wantilan [with parking] opposite the hearty tomato ragout with either your choice of beans or Pertamina station on Jln. and it isn’t. On the beach at Semawang, south of Sanur it is the re-branded Stiff Chilli which was always one of Sanur’s best budget-priced restaurants. The Tree Bar, beachfront at Maya Sanur has become the most popular sunset bar in Sanur. There are all of those standard bar snacks; olives, onion rings [remoulade sauce], potato wedges [spiced] and Japanese Endamame [steamed soy beans with sea salt] plus many more exotic options. Their tasty Chicken Wontons are served in the style of that popular Thai entrée, translated as ‘money bags’, minced chicken in a thin crisp wrapping with spicy aioli dip. The Salt & Pepper Squid arrives in a bucket of generous size, all of which are small bite-sized tender pieces, the dip is soy and red pepper [just enough to keep up the thirst].
Nikkei is on Jln. Monkey Forest, opp. the public car park, next to Habitat and under the same management, it offers Nikkei cuisine a blend of Japanese and Peruvian, cool and fresh! The Salmon Carpacio is ginger flavoured, a Seafood Ceviche combines king prawn, tuna and salmon with wasabi and lemon juice. Lomo Saltado is Peruvian, stir-fried tenderloin in a dark Kyoto sake sauce with onion, baby potatoes, capsicum and edamame beans. Chicken Onigirazu is teriyaki chicken wrapped in nori seaweed, coated with tempura. The Poke Salmon Soba is so healthy; salmon and soba noodles. Enjoy a glass of coconut water with your meal.
Best New Cafe - Tree Bar
Best Value - Odette
Only a little action at Sanur. The Clubhouse, is it Sanur’s best kept secret? The Clubhouse is simple; just steaks, hot dogs and fish & chips. However most go there to enjoy some of the best steaks in Bali. On the back streets of Sanur it is not easy to find for the first time. It is in behind Hardy’s and The Oasis; Jln. Kesari II Gang Penjor No 15, sign-posted on Jln. Danau Tamblimgan. If you prefer a smaller steak then order a Steak Sandwich or Burger. The Hub has been all the rage in recent months, and threatens to be one success among many failures to open on The Bypass. It is on the northern end and is a giant glass house which seems to be the latest fashion in Bali restaurants. The Hub is offspring from the well established Bali Kopi House of Butterfly Coffee fame, at the southern Best New Fine Dining - Aperitif @ The Viceroy end of The Bypass. The evening begins at the cocktail bar for pre dinner Warung Kayu Api, on The ByPass in central Sanur. After drinks whilst plucking snacks from the canapé tree before testing the water at Uluwatu for a few years they now bring
Half way between Ubud and Sanur is Kalamansi, a new stylish Indonesian restaurant on Jln. Raya Batu Bulan, an extension of the popular Odette restaurants in Ubud. With ample parking in front and air-con inside, it is all very professional. Standard Indonesian entrees include Otak-Otak [minced fish and spices wrapped in banana leaf]. Kroket Kentang are of chicken and mashed potato, crumbed and deep fried. Batagor are dumplings of a combined chicken, prawn and tofu whilst Asinan Udang are tiger prawns tossed in a spicy salad. Nasi Campur is a feature of Kalamansi but only available for lunch. The Beetroot Carpaccio is combined with mint yoghurt, red berries, cashews and feta. There are the normal number of new arrivals [and departures] in the Kerobokan area. Why do newcomers keep saying their address is Seminyak [or now even Canggu] when it is actually Kerobokan? Misinformation and very confusing for all!

Mains include Shawarma [lamb or beef], Djaj Mahwi [BBQ chickcn leg with fatoush salad and potato or a fusion mish-mash of Spaghetti and chilli tuna, Rista bil Sammakh. At Jimbaran Above Eleven Rooftop Bar & Restaurant is an intruder from Bangkok, Thailand, where it has been packing them in ever since 2012. It is situated at the Movenpick Resort in Jimbaran, on the rooftop, but with its own separate entrance. It can almost be called a beach club as it overlooks the sea. The Nikkei cuisine, a blend of Peruvian and Japanese food specialties, is complemented with a raw seafood bar. There is a range of Peruvian Ceviche such as the original with red onion, sweet potato and chilli or just a simple one with mango and chilli. There are also Causas [mashed potato, chilli and lime with various toppings, such as crab meat, quail egg and avocado], Tiraditos [Peruvian sashimi] and Anticuchos [grilled skewers of meat or seafood; pork neck, baby squid, chicken thighs, beef heart]. The stars of the mains are Lomo Saltado [grilled beef tenderloin with onions, chilli, coriander], and the amazing Seco de Cordero, lamb shank slow cooked in beer, chilli and coriander For such an up-market operation the prices are quite surprisingly moderate. Up on the Bukit at Uluwatu Sake no Hana is a high class Japanese restaurant. A part of the Hakkasan Group it was first established in Mayfar, London then subsequently exported to Saudi Arabia. Now it is also in Bali at Uluwatu. Headed by Michelin guide-starred chef Hideki Hiwatashi, the restaurant offers the refined Toban and Kamameshi cuisines. At the Sushi Bar you can watch as your order is prepared, which is the way that it should always be done. The restaurant joins the Omnia Day Club at the Uluwatu Alila Resort. This is very fine dining, Japanese style.
Sundays Beach Club is re-branded from the original Finns Beach Club at Uluwatu. The place is called Sundays but it is open every day. The food menu is designed to suit the location with many finger food options; Tacos [Barramundi], Viet Bao Buns [stuffed with Tempura Lobster or Char Siu], Duck Sang Choi Bao [wrapped in crisp lettuce leaf]. The Burgers include Bacon & Egg, Barramundi, Crisp Chicken, Falafel or the Original.[Aussie beef, onion & cheese]. For dessert the Aussie/NZ Pavlova.
Lamak Pomelo Crab with Edible Flowers
As for 2019 will it be more of the same? As Bali continues to grow its reputation as the culinary hot spot of Asia no doubt more and more will attempt to establish a presence, those with industry knowledge of operating restaurants in a tourist environment may well succeed, others will not. What we do know is that current successful ones will continue to expand. The Happy Chappy chain will open EXPRESS versions [mainly for take away] in a number of new locations. The management of the highly successful Naughty Nuri’s Seminyak [so much better than the original in Ubud] will open other new franchises. Ryoshi Sanur moves to a new larger site further south, same road. Taco Casa, one of Ubud’s most successful restaurants of the past decade, currently in temporary premises, moves back to its original location in a big new two level building. Also in Ubud a new fish restaurant on Raya Ubud and theweirdly named Burger Cartel in Pengosekan. Melting Pot, Bali’s biggest and best sports bar and Texan restaurant, is always extending and is now adding a new front entrance that will feature Texan style saloon swinging doors, the only thing missing will be the gunfights.
Fine Dining
Aperitif - the ultimate in traditional fine dining.
Asian
Curry in Bali - the fragrant curries of Kerala, southern India.
Best Value
Odette - International food at almost warung prices
Cafe
Tree Bar - location, taste, value
As well many long established restaurants re-invented themselves with new modern menus, such as Ubud’s Lamak, one of the pioneers of fine Ubud dining. 20 years ago there were three before the arrival of Mozaic [Ary’s and TeraZo are long gone]. The new menu at Lamak includes my favourites; Chicken Breast stuffed with mango puree and a great Pomelo Crab, edible flowers and all [pictured].
Cheap Eats
Ubud Food Court - range of cuisines, budget priced
Bali still presents the best ‘value for money’ dining in Asia, and the widest variety of different cuisines. Aren’t we lucky?

Loloh Cemcem: Bali’s Take on Jamu By Anita
Most expats, and even tourists, are familiar with Indonesian drinks such as jamu (traditional health potions) and arak (white rice wine). Not many realize, however, that there are plenty of other beverages out there that are specific to Indonesia or Bali. Loloh cemcem is just one of such traditional thirstquenchers. While jamu is known for its strong and bitter taste, loloh cemcem is more gentle on the pallet. The refreshing potion combines a blend of sour, salty, spicy and sweet flavors, and is surprisingly tasty. As the name suggests, the main ingredient of the beverage is cemcem (or hog plum leaves), which are often blended with jarak and betel leaves, as well as a variety of fruit and spices. In fact, according to the “Ethnobotanical Study of Loloh: Traditional Herbal Drinks from Bali,” a total of 51 plants have been documented for their use in loloh recipes. Prepared in a manner passed down generations, loloh cemcem contains no preservatives, and as such can only be kept in the fridge for two or three days. Firstly, the ingredients are boiled or mashed in warm water, and then filtered using cloth. The broth is then packaged in plastic bottles for sale. In addition to quenching thirst, the concoction is popular for its therapeutic properties such as lowering blood pressure and improving digestion. It is also highly recommended for breastfeeding mothers and those suffering from a sore throat. Unlike jamu, which is enjoyed all over the archipelago, loloh is drank exclusively in Bali. In fact, the best place to taste loloh cemcem is Penglipuran Village, where the drink is said to have originated. The village, located in the Bangli district, around 45 kilometers northwest of Denpasar, has been welcoming guests since 1992 to showcase Balinese culture and traditions. Not surprisingly, many Penglipuran households still produce and sell their own loloh cemcem. Loloh cemcem is not as ubiquitous as its Indonesian counterpart jamu, but luckily you do not need to travel as far as Penglipuran Village for a taste of the potion. Look out for plastic bottles with a green concoction at your local warungs, markets and stalls. While not many restaurants and cafes across the island serve loloh cemcem, the curious can sample the green elixir at Kunyit Restaurant at the ANVAYA Beach Resort. Along Indonesian and
Balinese cuisine, and Megibung feasts, Kunyit also serves loloh cemcem with asam gelugur and brown sugar.
Other Notable Indonesian Drinks Es Cincau Popular across Indonesia, es cincau consists of grass jelly made from the leaves of the mesona plant. The leaves are soaked in hot water before being strained. The creamy liquid is then placed in the refrigerator for three to four hours to solidify. The resulting jelly is then cut up and placed in a glass with coconut milk, water, condensed milk, pandan leaves and ice. Es Cincau is credited with lowering fever, reducing hypertension and alleviating constipation. A similar concoction, es daluman is a blend of grass jelly, sago pearls and coconut milk or cream. The curious can try es daluman at the Art Cafe Bumbu Bali in Nusa Dua.
Some Balinese loloh potions come without cemcem leaves, making them very similar to jamu. As such, they are easier to find in restaurants and cafes across the island. Kayun Resto in Mas, just outside Ubud, offers a taste of traditional Balinese fare made from organic produce in an open air pavilion, along with a menu of healthy beverages. Try loloh kayun turmeric with turmeric, tamarind, orange, lime, natural salt and honey or opt for loloh kayun saraswati, a concoction of apple, lime, ginger, cucumber, celery and parsley. More off of the beaten path, Bali Asli is nestled in the foothills of Mount Agung in Gelumpang Village in Karangasem, around 30 minutes from Candidasa and Amed. The restaurant offers loloh kunyit, a refreshing drink containing turmeric to alleviate stomach problems and loloh don kayu minis, with a sweet wood leaf used to reduce the symptoms of flu and soothe sore throats. For an all together different take on loloh, Alila Ubud offers organic mixology workshops inspired by the island’s abundance of fresh organic produce. Handpick ingredients from Alila’s organic garden before creating three of the resort’s signature cocktails, one being the venue’ take on loloh – a concoction made with kemangi (lemon basil) leaves, mint leaves, turmeric, rosemary, lemongrass and gin. Those wishing to combine loloh with a spa treatment can do so at Vinesa Spa, which features a Loloh Bar where guests can taste freshly-brewed health elixirs aimed at cleansing the body, boosting energy, reducing inflammation and promoting weight loss.
Es Cendol Also popular in other Southeast Asian countries, the most characteristic ingredient of es cendol is green jelly made from rice flour. The jelly is usually served with coconut milk, diced jack fruit, palm sugar and ice. Those interested can get their hands on es cendol at Murni’s Warung, an Ubud eatery that dates back to 1974. Sari Temulawak Indonesia’s take on a carbonated drink, Sari Temulawak was popular in the 1980s before American soft drinks became the norm across the archipelago. The bottled drink is made from Java ginger, known around the archipelago for its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. Usually served with ice, the sweet drink can be found in many local warungs across the island. Fool’s Gold: What Fish Oil Does to Our Health & Planet By Paracelsus Asia
Omega-3 in the form or fish or krill oil is one of the world’s most successful supplements but a recent and definitive study has found that it has little or no benefit for heart health or strokes. As a result the US$30 billion a year omega-3 industry is in a bind. In fact, this is just the tip of the iceberg in an industry that is probably worth ten times that amount. The men and organisations behind the “reduction industry”, as it is known, have not just been robbing us blind for decades and conning us with bum science into buying fish oil, but have been behind the plunder of our oceans for several centuries. Nearly wiping out the whales and overfishing many species of fish and seafood to near extinction. Not to feed us, mind you, but as fertiliser and to feed pigs, chicken and fish farms.
In the early 1970s a Danish chemist heard about the low incidence of cardiovascular disease in Inuit communities and went to Greenland found that Inuit people had a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids and blood lipid levels of omega3s much higher than westerners. They also had much lower rates of coronary heart disease and from this concluded that omega-3s just might reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Each decade brings a different use for all those anchovies. Today, the most elite product of the reduction industry in the form of dietary supplements, which provides medical cover for this epic ecological crime. And it’s not just Peruvian anchovies that are reduced to fish meal and oil. All told, the reduction industry removes from the ocean 20m-25m tonnes annually – equivalent to the combined weight of the US population.
It is as sad a story as any from the other great robber industries, think sugar, tobacco and pharmaceuticals, that despoil our planet to enrich themselves and take no heed for the future. This July, the Cochrane Group, a highly regarded UK research organisation that evaluates medical research for the general public, blew the whistle, releasing a metaanalysis to determine if omega-3 pills, one of the world’s most popular dietary supplements, reduced the risk of coronary heart disease. They do not. After comparing 79 trials involving 112,059 people, the researchers found “little or no difference to risk of cardiovascular events, coronary heart deaths, coronary heart disease events, stroke or heart irregularities”. The finding comes as a shock to many health conscious consumers, who believe taking a daily dose of up to 3,000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids comprise DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenic acid) lessens the risk of cardiovascular disease while inhibiting LDL and inflammation factors, high blood pressure and at the same time enhancing cognition. It should not be surprise. In the past 15 years over 20 studies have shown the same thing. What is surprising is how the benefits of fish and seafood has been successfully conflated with a fish oil capsule. Omega-3s do something in our bodies – and probably something important. But without researching the larger context of the fish that contain them, no one can say what. The confusion arises from the historical baggage of fish oil and the $30bn industry associated with omega-3 extraction. Back in the Industrial Revolution cod-liver oil was used to cure rickets. It had nothing to do with coronary heart disease. A Norwegian pharmacist patented a chemical process for extracting cod-liver oil, launching a campaign promoting the regular use of cod-liver oil as a cure-all. The campaign caught on and a spoonful a day became common practice around the world. By the time omega-3s started to be a focus of medical research, there was already a rosy feeling around fish oil.
The reduction industry has appeared in different forms under different ownership over centuries. In the 18th century, it nearly wiped out the whales to make lamp oil and lubricants. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, it shifted to the southern hemisphere, reducing 390,000 of the 400,000 great whales to margarine, nitroglycerine and other “marine ingredients”. In the latter half of the 20th century, it was the turn of small, oily fish like anchovies, sardines and herring. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the largest reduction operation in human history took place off Peru in pursuit of the Peruvian anchoveta, amounting to 10% of the world catch that year. Obscenely, in a poor country, Peruvian law dictates that more than 95% of the catch must go to the reduction industry.
Inexorably, the reduction industry marches destructively on. Now, it’s targeting Antarctic krill, the keystone prey species of the entire Antarctic ecosystem.
Further laboratory studies showed that omega-3s were involved in anti-inflammatory reactions. But while correlations abound for omega-3s and heart disease, the lack of randomised control trials (RCTs), the gold standard when it comes to research, fail to show causation. And that calls in question the basis of the $30 billion omega-3 supply industry, who up until the publication of the July 2018 Cochrane meta-analysis clearly demonstrating that there is no scientific basis to show omega-3 supplementation does anything to reduce heart disease, have managed to cloud the issue with a succession of objections and their own flawed “associative” research. But the fact that the industry’s arguments shift with each new, damning meta-analysis gives you pause. What’s going on here? Is there an international conspiracy to discredit omega-3s and if so why? Hardly. Or, do the Omega-3 suppliers have other interests they want to protect? No, something else is going on. For while the fish oil is a big deal, it is microscopic compared to the bigger game. Long before omega-3 supplements became popular, an industry arose using the same omega-3-rich creatures not for medicine, but for whole slew of agricultural and industrial purposes that consumes millions of tonnes of marine wildlife every year. Today, one in every four kilograms of fish caught is reduced into oil and meal and used for agriculture, land animal husbandry and, most recently, fish farming.

Amid all the conflicting reports, it is clear that fish and seafood bring considerable health and environmental benefits. In addition to providing us with omega-3s, fish deliver protein with far fewer calories than meat. Harvesting wild fish from well-managed stocks requires a fraction of the carbon as farming livestock. Fish farming puts less burden on the Earth in terms of carbon and freshwater use. You don’t need to fish some fish to extinction, to feed other fish . Fishfarming is more ecoefficient using food based on algae and food waste. And if you use “filter feeders” such as mussels, clams and oysters, the benefits are even greater. Bivalves don’t have to be fed anything, they make water cleaner and provide protein 30 times more efficiently than cattle. We know that eating fish twice a week makes people live longer and is better for you than taking a fish oil pill. We know omega-3 is good for you too, but we don’t know why. You don’t need fish oil to increase your levels of omega-3. Just reduce your intake of omega-6. What we do know is that the omega-3 industry and the reduction industry that bred it takes fish from the water unsustainably and in a way that doesn’t put protein on our plates – just pills in our cupboards. Is this the way we want to continue to do business with the planet?

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH It’s the end of the year, as well as the summer (or winter) holidays…depending on where you call home, so long flights and holidays are on the cards. Taking a few simple measure before, during and after the flight will make the trip a lot more comfortable. 1. Keep moving Keeping circulation flowing during a long trip is crucial so make sure to stretch your thighs however you can so the energy can move out and down through your legs, and do some deep breathing exercises regularly. Walk up and down the cabin during the waking hours to avoid DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), a common travel ailment. 2. Eat well & Stay hydrated Go for the healthier options on the menu (if there is one) and when the drink cart rolls by, make sure to stay away from coffee, alcohol or even tea as these can all contribute even more to dehydration.
The Long Haul….
How to Survive That Long Flight By Kim Patra Heat is very important to maintaining healthy immunity, especially when traveling.
This can be especially distressing for young children whose ear tubes are very narrow.
5. Keep your body’s clock ticking
Follow these tips to avoid airplane ear :
When heading across time zones, “jetlag” is caused by a disruption to the body’s clock. While the shift is inevitable, you can avoid mental and physical fatigue by trying to stick as closely as possible to your usual routine. If you’re taking medications or supplements, try to adapt to the new time zone for the time you’re away and take at the equivalent of the same time each day if possible. Try to eat at similar times during the day. And while you may want to lie down on your plush hotel bed or doze off on the beach upon arrival, It would be wiser to stay awake for as long as possible in your new time zone then going to sleep early.
• • • • • • • •
6. Comfort & hygiene A small pillow is a staple carry-on item for all long-distance travelers. Every airport on the planet will sell travel pillows, however I would shop around and research which in-flight pillows actually work best before the flight. An eye mask is especially useful if you’re flying during the day. Bring toiletries in your carry-on and make sure to brush your teeth, throw on some deodorant, or even change your clothes. Mint candies or breath fresheners are a must on long flights, for you and the guy net to you! 7. Avoid getting a blood clot
3. Relax Use some aromatherapy and download some meditation or hypnosis apps on your phone for when you need to relax. Listening to music is a great way to relax the brain. Music has the power to shift consciousness and change the brain chemical activity. Bring along some noise cancelling headphones, to enhance your experience and cut out the noise from your neighbor, who could be chatting loudly or snoring even louder. 4. Pack layers The air conditioning on board may seem like a lifesaver if you’re just leaving a tropical climate, but the change in temperature is tough on the body. If you’re in your summer clothes - tank top, shorts and flip-flops for example - make sure to pack a light sweater, light scarf and some socks. If your neck, shoulders and feet are warm, you should be OK.
Blood clots are a risk for certain people on long haul flights. Here are some simple steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis): • Try to keep your thighs clear of the edge of your seat by keeping your feet up on the leg rests at the highest elevation or resting your feet on your hand luggage. • Exercise during the flight by moving around the aircraft cabin or by using a leg exerciser. • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Avoid too much alcohol. • Wear elastic flight socks or support stockings (this is particularly important for passengers with varicose veins). Make sure they are not tight around the knees, this will actually increase the risk of a clot forming. • Walk briskly for at least half an hour before takeoff & during transit stops.
Yawn and swallow during ascent and descent. Yawning and swallowing activate the muscles that open your eustachian tubes. You can suck on candy or chew gum to help you swallow. Use the Valsalva maneuver during ascent & descent. Gently blow, as if blowing your nose, while pinching your nostrils and keeping your mouth closed. Repeat several times, especially during descent, to equalize the pressure between your ears and the airplane cabin. Don’t sleep during takeoffs and landings. If you’re awake during ascents and descents, you can do the necessar self-care techniques when you feel pressure on your ears. Reconsider travel plans. If possible, don’t fly when you have a cold, sinus infection, nasal congestion or ear infection. If you’ve recently had ear surgery, talk to your doctor about when it’s safe to travel. Use filtered earplugs. These earplugs slowly equalize the pressure against your eardrum during ascents and descents, (not regular earplugs) one brand is called “Earplanes”. I have never seen these in Bali. Use an over-the-counter decongestant nasal spray. If you have nasal congestion, use a nasal decongestant about 30 minutes to an hour before takeoff and landing. Avoid overuse, however, because nasal decongestants taken over several days can increase congestion. Use oral decongestant pills cautiously. Oral decongestants may be helpful if taken 30 minutes to an hour before an airplane flight. However, if you have heart disease, a heart rhythm disorder or high blood pressure, or if you’ve experienced possible medication interactions, avoid taking an oral decongestant unless your doctor approves. Take allergy medication. If you have allergies, take your medication about an hour before your flight.
And from my desk it’s a Very Happy New Years to you all. Stay Happy, Stay Healthy & Stay Happy ☺
8. Avoid Ear / Head Pain “Airplane ear” is the stress exerted on your eardrum and other middle ear tissues when the air pressure in your middle ear and the air pressure in the environment are out of balance. You may experience airplane ear at the beginning of a flight when the airplane is climbing or at the end of a flight when the airplane is descending. These fast changes in altitude cause air pressure changes and can trigger airplane ear. Ear or sinus pain can be anything from mildly uncomfortable, to feeling like your head is going to explode!

BOOMER CORNER I’m a War Baby as opposed to a Baby Boomer, which I hope will not invalidate anything I have to contribute to a column entitled Boomer Corner. Such generational categories are helpful and fun, if not demographically or geographically exact. As a War Baby (1939-45), vintage 1944, I was born in Britain, as was my elder brother. In his case in 1940. My American cousin, if I had had one, born in the same year as my brother, would not have been a War Baby at all. He would have to have been called something else, as the US did not enter WW2 until 1941. My wife on the other hand, born in 1946, was very much in the first wave of Baby Boomerdom, or what later came to be described as the “Me generation” - don’t ask me why.

coverage that equals the best anywhere. By this I mean, no age increases, no exclusions or loadings for pre-existing conditions, plus emergency evacuation. A major heart operation costing over US$100,000 in Singapore will cost under Euro 40,000 in Germany or France. If you are an Australian, it’s a no-brainer. Australia has one of the best public health services there is (and what’s more, the service itself is in robust good health, unlike the venerable NHS in Britain or the Bolshevik tendency that afflicts the French system ).
The Baby Boomer cohort lasted 18 years until 1964 and if popular music is a large part of what defines a generation, as I believe it does, it was the War Babies and the Baby Boomers who, through the 1950s, 60s and 70s, brought us the rock music and radical social change of the era. And later, alas – it must be owned, the neo-liberal and conservative claw-back that took place as they aged, prospered and put on weight. The Gen X’ers (1965-76) and the Millennials (1977-95) are the ones who created and brought us into an online world and... to the brink of a post-human future. With all that under the belt, where the Centennials (1996 onward) will lead us... we can only wait and see. Whatever that future is - War Baby through Centennial - it is something we have all brung upon ourselves... and the rest of the planet.
Take Ibu Kat’s piece on medical insurance for example. Her report is quite chilling and the younger we take aboard the realities of how this industry operates the better it will go for us down the pike. The message is, choose early and choose carefully, making sure there a no horrors embedded in the small print to swag you when you hit your 70’s. That requires informed research and don’t forget - portability. Then, having consulted a trusted professional (Kat mentioned several) get yourself and your family aboard. It’s wise to check out your own country’s national health entitlements for its expatriates too, if they have one. Some, like France with its CFE, will provide overseas essential coverage at very reasonable rates which, with a small top up from the private sector, can give you
However there are snags. First you need to know that what your taking is 1) any good, and 2) if your taking it in the right amount to do you any good. And lastly 3) supplementation and most of the alternative treatments prescribed by a qualified integrative MD may be cost-effective but they are not cheap and often not covered by insurance. The biggest snag here is that it is next to impossible to purchase any of the formulations that can help you in Bali. As in most countries, in the past Indonesia allowed you to import nutrititional supplements by post providing they were for personal consumption and in a reasonable quantity, not for re-sale. A reasonable supply was considered to be three months worth. The import tax was minimal. Regretably there was a ministerial land grab recently on behalf of customs department at the expense of the national postal service and now no nutritional supplements are allowed to enter the country and must be sent back to place of origin. You can’t even ‘ransom’ them at any price. They are in fact treated as if they’re pharmaceuticals , which means they cannot be imported until each individual ingredient in a formulation has been approved by BPOM, the regulatory body. This is a lengthy and expensive process and not an option for individuals. It is a misapplied restrictive practice that in theory is intended to protect us from the import of unregulated pharmaceuticals.
If early retirement can be taken aged 50, often the case nowadays as the middle-aged seek new occupations more in keeping with the people they have become, then a 50-year old man or woman relocating to Bali today would have been born in 1968, a soixante-huitard at birth and a gilet jaune at his or her “re-birth”, you could say. And - dare one hope, a portent of more equitable days to come. Boomer Corner with the exception of myself, a male War Baby, currently comprises four Boomer ladies who could hardly be better qualified to explore and relay to the Bali Advertiser readership the ins and outs of forging an extended and pleasant stay in Bali. Ines Wynn, largely responsible for birthing the concept, ably set out the parameters; Ibu Kat, tellingly addressed the problem of medical insurance, which weighs heavy on so many of us; Susan Tereba movingly recounts her experience taking care of her husband with Alzheimer’s in Bali; and Shari, who gave the best steer possible on going grey gracefully, courtesy of Canggu Max.
For all of us, insured or not, disease prevention is by far the best option. That means a healthy life style in terms of exercise and diet. Therapeutically, clinical nutrition is the great scandal and shame of modern medicine, in that it is relegated to the closet. Eating well will keep you healthy and properly applied can cure or alleviate many chronic conditions. Real food is by far the best option but effective supplementation under expert direction can work wonders.
As noted, swank new hospitals do not a good health service make. There are good doctors here and there are times when the art of medicine combined with long experience can work as well, if not better than the science of it. But are there enough such doctors? How is it that we see the same doctors’ names appearing on the practitioner boards in so many different hospitals in Bali? Do they have the modern diagnostic equipment needed and when they do, are the technicians available to operate and translate the results effectively? I doubt it. My wife’s pulmonary specialist salivates visibly when he sees the standard and detail of X-rays she brings back from Singapore. And 18 months ago, I don’t know about now, there was only one holter heart monitor, a wearable device used to measure heart beat over a 24hour period, available on the entire island. For the uninsured and those with limited resources you can find good treatment from an experienced doctor here who will, if he’s doing he’s job properly, tell you if he can treat you successfully here or if you should go elsewhere for diagnosis and treatment. In which case, hospitals in Bangkok, Penang and India are where you need to look. For diagnostic purposes only, the Raffles Centre in Singapore is hard to beat. Unless you are covered or are very wealthy, do not get yourself admitted in Singapore, if it can be avoided. Once you are, the costs are eye-watering.

Until a less corporate or a more user-friendly regime prevails, the only practical option is to bring in the supplements you need yourself, or to set up an informal ring among friends and acquaintances so you can assist each other when you return from overseas trips. As Ines Wynn says when introducing the column, she hopes there can be a lively interaction and exchange of useful information developing in and around Boomer Corner. In a world that is already heavily influenced by manipulative algorithms, in ways we are only now beginning to perceive, an open-hearted sharing among BA readers as to their knowledge and experience of Bali is a one good way of fighting back. A lively exchange of information and views alongside this column and hopefully online would not only be an organic and valuable resource but a refreshing change. The Boomer Corner is a column dedicated to people over 60 living in Bali. Its mandate is to cover topics, practicalities, activities, issues, concerns and events related to senior life in Bali. We welcome suggestions from readers. E-mail us at : Baliboomers@gmail.com Copyright © 2019 Boomer Corner You can read all past articles of Boomer Corner at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Local News Brit held in Bali over ‘tiny’ amount of cannabis oil appeals for help as he could face death penalty
32 20 volcanoes across Indonesia currently showing above normal activity Perahu [West Java], Dieng [Central Java], Papandayan [West Java], Gede [West Java] and Bromo [East Java], we have given the direction to remain cautious and coordinate with us at the PVMBG or with the Volcano Observation Post, which is on stand-by to provide information,” Kristianto said.
A British man who could face the death penalty in Indonesia if convicted following drug smuggling allegations has admitted he has been “very stupid”. Pip Holmes was among four men from Peru, China, Malaysia and Germany held in Bali after they were arrested in five separate operations by customs officials and police. The five were paraded at a news conference in Denpasar, the capital of the popular tourist destination, last week. The father-of-two, from Cornwall, is accused of receiving almost 31kg of cannabis oil in the mail. He said he had been in Bali for two months before being arrested earlier this month. The 45-year-old claims he was caught with around three grams of medicinal THC oil, which he says he uses to treat arthritis. Holmes’ family launched a crowdfunding page to raise £85,000 (£67,000) to cover legal fees in a bid to keep him out of prison. They say he could face up to 15 years behind bars, but hope he might be kept at a rehabilitation centre instead before being deported to the UK. But he could be sentenced to death if convicted, police in Indonesia said.
The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) has noted that there are 20 volcanoes with above normal levels of activity across the country. “One of them has the status of awas [danger], two are on siaga [watch] and the remaining 17 mountains are on waspada [caution]. The awas is Mount Sinabung [North Sumatra], and the siaga are Mount Agung [Bali] and Mount Soputan [North Sulawesi],” said Kristianto, PVMBG’s head of the western region volcanic mitigation subsector, as quoted by Tempo. Kristianto said a number of volcanoes were popular tourist destinations during the Christmas and New Year holiday period. The PVMBG has coordinated with the respective tourist area managers, he added. “For Mount Tangkuba
He also cautioned that volcanoes could erupt with little or no warning. “It’s not that there are no signs, but they are short, and not obvious,” he said. A number of volcanoes have such characteristics, including Mount Tangkubanparahu and Mount Papandayan. “Mount Tangkubanparahu in 2013, for example, issued several phreatic eruptions that were not preceded by obvious signs,” he said. Kristianto said the phreatic eruptions produced a burst of material that fell around the crater of Mount Tangkubanparahu. “It is imaginable that if it happened during daytime, it could cause a panic, and maybe someone could get hit. In general, the material thrown out by phreatic eruptions is not hot, but it’s the aspect of panic that could actually cause new problems. This is what needs to be watched out for,” he said. He added that the PVMBG had already established intensive communication to anticipate such events, especially during this holiday season. “Communication between our managers and us from the PVMBG, as well as officials in the Volcano Observation Post, has been intensified. Especially at Tangkuban Perahu, we have arranged for information to be disseminated,” he said. [The Jakarta Post December 22, 2018]
Travel vlogger poses on a trash-filled Bali beach
The south east Asian country has strict drug laws and dozens of convicted smugglers are on death row. Its last executions were in July 2016 when an Indonesian and three foreigners were shot by a firing squad. British woman Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in Bali in 2013 after being found guilty of attempting to smuggle £1.6 million worth of cocaine into the holiday island on May 19, 2012. Holmes, who has been moved to a rehab centre, revealed through a message on the crowdfunding page that he feels “sick with fear”. He said: “For the last few days, each morning I have woken up in a terrible nightmare. “As it stands, I don’t know if I’m about to spend a few months in rehabilitation or if I’m about to face 5 to 15 years in Kerobokan - one of the toughest prisons on Earth.” He added: “It all went terribly wrong when I was arrested for possession of a tiny amount of THC oil. Stupid much? Yes very very stupid. “Even though medicinal THC is something so widely accepted elsewhere and it was such a small amount, I foolishly crossed the line in a very strict country. “The only way now to ensure my sentence is something I will survive is to invest in the right legal representation and rehabilitation.” [Huffpost December 18, 2018]
An aerial image of a girl lying amidst piles of rubbish on Batu Bolong Beach has gone viral after influencer Jordan Simons posted it to his instagram account, @thelifeofjord, yesterday. Single-use water cups, plastic bottles, discarded flip flops, instant food packets and straws are among the washed-up items surrounding the swimsuit-clad model, Simons’ girlfriend Olivia Dejeu, who is a fashion and travel vlogger. Captioned “Just another day in paradise,” the photo has garnered more than 22,000 likes and stirred up a whole lot of controversy. While most comments expressed shame”So embarrassed to see it ”said @amerzadd-others claimed that the sea of trash is an annual phenomenon that occurs during rainy season. Several netizens even suggested that Simons had planted the rubbish before the shoot. “Did you just take photos (after picking up) a lot plastic around there?” commented @putripurple8. Sadly, Bali’s plastic waste predicament is not a new narrative. Back in 2012, pro surfer Kelly Slater famously tweeted, ”If Bali doesn’t #Do something serious about this pollution it’ll be impossible to surf here in a few years. Worst I’ve ever seen”. Earlier this year, diver Rich Horner’s underwater footage of the Manta Point dive site in Nusa
Padovan stated the spread of rabies, a deadly disease already prevalent in Bali, as one of the possible disastrous outcomes of animal smuggling. Backing up his colleague’s statement, Terry Price, ABF’s Regional Commander in Queensland, commented via the ABF website, “Wildlife smuggling is not only illegal but also very cruel and inhumane, with the animals often being smuggled for long periods of time without food and in limited space. “Australia’s maximum penalty for individual wildlife smugglers is a sentence of ten years in prison and a fine of up to AUD210,000 (US$151,061). The two poor squirrels were euthanized for biosecurity reasons while the Australian resident may face criminal charges. [Coconuts Bali December 14, 2018]
According to a report published on Statista, Indonesia is the world’s second biggest contributor to marine debris after China, with an estimated 1.29 million metric tons of its plastic waste ending up in the oceans annually. [Coconuts Bali December 18, 2018]
Brisbane man could face death penalty in Bali over drugs bedroom,” the prosecutor said. “After they turned the electricity back on, police searched their bodies and found nothing. They continued searching the home and found on the floor of the room a helmet box containing a blue bag with 13 plastic clips of powder suspected of cocaine, empty plastic clips, 2 plastic spoons and an electronic scale.” “When asked by the police the defendants admitted that it belonged to them without a permit from the authorities. They then were brought to police station along with the evidence.”
Australian tourist caught at Brisbane airport with live Bali squirrels A pair of live squirrels from Bali was seized by Australian Biosecurity and Border Force (ABF) at Brisbane Airport earlier this month. The animals were allegedly sneaked in by a holiday-maker who had just returned home from Bali, reports Kompas. Following a tip-off from Border Watch, airport officers searched the man’s suitcase to uncover the two creatures. While the man’s motive is still ambiguous, the Australian Department of Agriculture’s stance is crystal clear. “The fact that this passenger would deliberately violate the provisions of our biosecurity and put our country at risk is truly unbelievable,” said Nico Padovan, Head of Biosecurity Operations at Australia’s Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, as quoted in an article by Tempo.
Penida captured more yellowing poly bags than marine life. The government even declared an official ‘garbage emergency’ on several beaches in Kuta, Jimbaran and Seminyak at this time last year.
An Australian man could face the death penalty in Indonesia after being indicted for cocaine possession by a Bali court. Brendon Luke Johnsson, 43, from Brisbane, and his partner Remi Purwanti, 43, an Indonesian national, have been indicted on two counts and face two possible charges by Indonesian authorities. Despite the possibility that Johnsson could face the most severe of consequences - the death penalty - if found guilty, it is unlikely that a judge would impose such a harsh sanction on the Australian man for the relatively small amount of drugs in his possession. Indonesian authorities executed Bali Nine ringleaders Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan in 2015 for their part in that drug smuggling plot, but the other seven members were ultimately handed prison sentences ranging from 20 years to life in prison for attempting to smuggle more than eight kilograms of heroin to Australia. Prosecutor Yuli Peladiyanti claimed in a court appearance on Wednesday that the couple had 11.6 grams of cocaine in their possession, in 13 plastic clips, when they were arrested back in August. Yuli said that police had investigated the pair after another woman, Bena Silvia Magusta, had been arrested on August 4th by Bali police for possession of four clips of cocaine and claimed she had bought the drugs from the couple. Police travelled to the home Johnsson and Remi shared and knocked on the door. When no one answered they shut off the electricity, which prompted Remi to open the front door. “Remi was then asked if she ever handed over cocaine to Bena which Remi said yes, she did. Police then asked who she gets it from, to which Remi said she gets it from defendant Brendon who at the time was sleeping in the
The prosecutor alleged Johnsson had bought the cocaine from a man name Made in Legian street - near the Ground Zero memorial for the 2002 Bali bombings - for 40 million Rupiah (about $3850) and had then separated it into 20 packages. The primary indictment is under article 114-2 of Indonesia’s strict drugs laws, which states that the defendants “do not own a license from the authorities to offer for sale, to sell, to buy, to receive, to be a mediator in the sale, exchange or hand over of category one narcotics [of the] cocaine-type non-plants of more than five grams”. If the pair are eventually charged under this article and then found guilty the maximum penalty is death, while the minimum penalty is six years in prison. Alternatively, the pair have also been indicted under article 112-2 of Indonesia’s drug laws. This article states the defendants, “without a license from the authorities to keep or possess or provide category one narcotics [of the] non-plant cocaine-type of more than five grams”. If the pair are instead charged under this secondary article, they face a maximum of 20 years in prison and a minimum of five years. A decision on which article they will be charged under will be made later in the trial. Johnsson is believed to have been living in Bali for four years and is described as a design specialist. Outside court, his lawyer Edward Pangkahila said the Australian “was shocked when he found out that he faced the death penalty”. “He said ‘my life is in your hands’, please help me. We will do our best, we hope and pray, but we will do our best to represent him. “The next scheduled court appearance is January 9, 2019.Johnsson made no comment in court and entered no plea, as is standard practice in Indonesia, during the appearance. Lombok and Sulawesi have been devastated in the past few months and there are many people traumatised and homeless. With the wet season, getting people inside some kind of SHELTER is critical. Your support will save lives. It is that important.
for Lombok With the arrival of the wet season in Lombok and Sulawesi, communities already devastated by earthquakes now face an urgent need for shelter. You can help them. MyRedEnvelope Foundation has partnered with Project Karma, who have created shelters that will last a family several years for a cost of only 5 Juta, and are doing a major media push with Australian media to promote the shelters and our partners.
● ● ●
List your products for free on www.MyRedEnvelope. com Immediately receive MyRedEnvelope Accreditation as a business who actively supports charity. Receive additional promotions on social media and medias for your business via MyRedEnvelope. We are about to begin actively promoting SHELTER in the Australian media, encouraging Australians to support the emergency relief efforts by coming to Bali and preferring MyRedEnvelope.com listed businesses, and specifically those businesses joining as part of the SHELTER initiative.
What happens to your donation?
Support as a Business Businesses have an opportunity to play a direct and critical role. MyRedEnvelope.com is designed to benefit charities as well as the businesses who support them, with businesses pledging to donate 10% of any sales made via MyRedEnvelope.com and to our members. With SHELTER we are asking businesses to commit up front. That is, donate 5 juta (approximately AUD$500) to SHELTER now, and you can;
100% of your donation goes towards the project. Five million rupiah will directly pay for the construction of a SHELTER for a small family. You will receive a certificate from Project Karma which identifies the family who will be receiving the SHELTER you are providing, and you will be able to track its construction. You can even come and bang some nails in if you really want to get involved. What is the SHELTER like and how important is this project? It is not intended to be permanent housing, however these SHELTERs are strong enough to last for several years and are earthquake resistant. They include a water catchment facility and will be able to house up to 5 people; a small family.
