What is your professional background? I went to school for only six years. In those days, my parents and society believed that farmers didn’t need anything more than an elementary school education, so I worked on the family farm until I was 17. I then studied woodcarving and worked in the wood carving industry for almost 25 years. In 1990, I returned to the family farm. The wood carving business had become stagnant and I wasn’t making enough money to support my family. What natural fertilizers do you use? My family never used chemical fertilizers because we were already successful growing without them. We instead use traditional compost made from cow, chicken and pig manure. I apply this homemade fertilizer two times in a growing season. In 2007, I improved my compost by adding worms and leaves that started a fermentation process with the manure. I also concocted a non-chemical herbal pesticide spray that combines leaves and many other ingredients. I have different compost recipes for different applications. I even use certain leaves to keep fl ies and ticks off my cows. Why is the System of Rice Cultivation, or SRI, ecofriendly? We plant seedlings one by one, not ten in a bunch. This makes each seedling grow strong and increases the yield because each plant has many off-shoots. I studied and counted the off-shoots. If ten are planted by the regular method, each seedling has only two off-shoots. But if we plant just one seedling, it can grow as many as 70 offshoots. The rice grains are also larger. Bali and the world are undergoing a water crisis and SRI doesn’t need as much water. In this system, we don’t burn the rice straw (somi or jerami) but return the stalks to the soil so that it provides compost. I add fertilizer or spray which I make 100% myself so I can be assured that it doesn’t contain any chemicals. What are the pros and cons of SRI? Sometimes it’s difficult to convince farmers that the SRI method really works better. The young seedlings are singly spaced further apart, so farmers think that SRI will produce less rice per are, but actually the yield is much higher. I make a special tool to weed my SRI rice paddies. SRI takes more human labor for planting and weeding, but farmers don’t have to pay for the high cost of chemical fertilizers. Are organic SRI-grown rice fields vulnerable to diseases or pests? My experience is that strong and healthy organic rice fields are rarely affected by diseases or pests. Organic farming is about creating a healthy environment - without using chemicals – that is strong enough to withstand invasions. These infestations are seasonal, so one must be prepared beforehand. I have found that plants grown on farms using chemicals are not strong and healthy enough to withstand attacks. How do you pass on your knowledge? I always try to teach farmers how to use the best and most sustainable growing methods. I’m always ready to talk to farmers in the hope that they will change over to organic farming. Some are interested, some are just lazy and not creative or curious. Many hesitate to try something new which might fail or take a lot of work until they meet success. Maybe hand phones, watching TV and hanging out at the warung are more important to them.

I Wayan Setipriyadi, popularly known as Pak Fredy, was born in Taro, Gianyar, 57 years ago. He was brought up on a 3-ha farm that grew rice, vegetables and fruit. When the children became adults, the parents split the property up between their children, with Pak Fredy receiving 90 are as his share. Long before he first heard about permaculture in 2007, Pak Fredy used nonchemical fertilizers and companion planting. Today, about half of his land is given over to rice growing. Pak Fredy runs Bali Organic Corner, a retail and wholesale business selling rice, seedlings, compost, worms, herbs, tools and other products that contribute to a healthy and productive life.

Do you also offer classes? I teach one-day classes in beekeeping and honey production, how to grow using SRI methods and how to make compost with worms. I charge Rp100,000 to Rp300,000, depending on the number of students in the class. Instruction in organic farming takes longer, depending upon what the students already know. Actually, the study of organic farming is never finished. There is lots of trial and error before one attains success. I also do consultations with property owners and their staffs and help setup organic gardens at schools. I give tours of my gardens and rice fields.

What is so special about your red and brown rice? My organic rice is milled to get rid of only the non-edible hull, but keeps the bran and berm with all the micronutrients. Chemically grown white rice, on the other hand, removes the hull, awn, bran and berm. My organic rice tastes way better than white rice. It’s much better for my chickens, too. They don’t get sick as often. Where do you sell your rice? Most is sold to non-Indonesians at organic food markets and to restaurants. I usually sell my rice in 1-5 kg bags but also in larger quantities. I deliver to many areas with an additional charge depending on size of order.

C/BM/G-3 Jan. 18

What else do you sell? I have my own bees and sell beehives and honey. I have many repeat customers because my honey is very high quality. I also buy moringa leaves from my neighbor and sell moringa powder. I sell seeds and seedlings, too. I sell compost in 20 kg bags as well as composting worms. What is your most unusual product? Most farming tools sold in Bali break quickly, but my Supertools are much sturdier and can last 10 years. If there’s a production defect, I’ll replace any tool. However, if the tool is used for the wrong purpose or left out in the rain or in the soil, that is damage caused by the user. In those case, I do not replace the tool. What are the biggest obstacles keeping Balinese farmers from converting to organic cultivation? Many farmers today don’t have the soul of a farmer and don’t place much importance on healthy soil, healthy produce, healthy family, healthy earth and healthy and happy customers. Maybe they’ve just taken up farming for the money. They don’t realize that you can make money and still grow organically, respect the earth and have a happy soul. Where can one learn more about your products? Check out http://www.indonesiaorganic.com/rice/baliorganic-corner. 9 The Healing Tradition of Ayurveda Embraces the Individual

by Anita Surewicz

If you are feeling out of sorts, you are probably not the only one. The stresses of everyday life (yes, even in Bali), or something as simple as seasonal changes, can play havoc with our body constitution. Instead of turning to run-of-the-mill Western medical treatments, why not try a healing practice that has withstood the test of time - Ayurveda. Certified by the World Health Organization as the oldest comprehensive healthcare system, Ayurveda originated in India some 5000 years ago and was transplanted to Indonesia 3000 years later, along with the Hindu religion. Mithun Rama Raju Indukuru, an Ayurveda physician at the Sukhavati Ayurvedic Retreat and Spa, who grew up in Hyderabad in a family from a long line of Ayurvedic practitioners, says that the word Ayurveda translates to life knowledge - Ayu means life and Veda means knowledge in Sanskrit. “Ayurveda and its health principles are deeply rooted in ancient wisdom. It is great to see that this ancient system of medicine is becoming increasingly more popular in Bali,” he adds. According to Ayurveda, a person is made up of doshas, or a body energy that is composed of five elements: air, water, fire, earth and space. There are three doshas: the vata dosha (air and space), the pitta dosha (fire and water) and the kapha dosha (water and earth). Each person is born with a unique mixture of doshas that controls their physical, mental and emotional state. As such, Raju says, a treatment that is beneficial to one person may not necessarily be right for another, even if they are showing the same symptoms. “While some treatments are clearly beneficial to all, Ayurveda is all about the individual - there are no onesize-fits all remedies in Ayurveda.”

An Ayurvedic treatment, or panchakarma, begins with a consultation during which a physician determines a person’s dosha type, and any imbalances in energy fl ows between the mind, body and soul. Ayurvedic physicians diagnose imbalances by examining the pulse, and looking at the person’s physical characteristics such as the skin, tongue, eyes, and body build for any abnormalities. Some of the disorders that are commonly treated with Ayurvedic medicine include anxiety, depression, hypertension, infl ammation, skin problems, ulcers and even diabetes. Following a physical examination, an Ayurvedic practitioner prescribes a treatment plan to address any imbalances in the patient’s dosha composition through detoxifying the body and relaxing the mind. The prescribed therapies can include abhyanga, a full-body massage with a copious amount of warm oil to liquefy toxins and recharge the mind; and shirodhara where warm oil is poured in a stream over the forehead to soothe the body and relax the mind. “I prescribe all kinds of herbal oil treatments at my practice in Bali except vamana (induced vomiting) and rakta mokshana (bloodletting). The treatments help reduce stress in the body, and assist in the elimination of mental and physical toxins that accumulate in our bodies due to our lifestyles,” Raju says. Diet is a very important part of Ayurveda, as the digestive systems is believed to be one of the root causes of any negative symptoms. According to Ayurveda, there are six main ‘tastes’ that need to be balanced in order to realign the doshas. These include: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. Each one can increase or decrease the presence of a certain dosha in the body. Hence, if an Ayurvedic physician finds an imbalance of doshas during a diagnosis, he or she will recommend increasing or decreasing the consumption of certain foods. “As doshas fl uctuate everyday due to our activities and the food we consume, we must understand how to balance digestive fire, how to nourish the tissues, and how to eliminate toxins from our bodies,” Raju says. “One should select food according to their Ayurvedic body type, the seasons and the changing climate.”

Ayurvedic medicine focuses on how each individual can live in harmony with the fl ow of their natural body composition. Hence, it is crucial that each person undergoing panchakarma fully participates in the treatment, and takes responsibility for incorporating any prescribed lifestyle changes into their daily routine. “Ayurveda is not just about treating the condition,” Raju says. “It is about achieving optimal health through lasting lifestyle changes.”

Interesting Facts about Ayurveda Ayurveda has been documented in the Vedas, ancient Indian scriptures considered to be one of the oldest surviving texts in the world. Ayurveda has eight branches, including: internal medicine; surgery; pediatrics; ear, throat and nose; rejuvenation; psychiatry; toxicology and aphrodisiacs. Ayurvedic physicians typically complete five years of training. The vata dosha is characterized by slim build, the pitta dosha by medium build and the kapha dosha by strong build. Often used in Ayurvedic diet, ghee-or clarified butter-promotes weight loss, reduces cholesterol, decreases infl ammation and boosts the immune system. In the days gone by, hundred-year-old ghee was believed to cure nervous disorders. Many Indian families would pass ghee down from generation to generation. While many Ayurvedic practitioners today advocate a vegetarian diet, Ayurveda is not a vegetarian philosophy. There are ancient texts that describe different ways of preparing meat. Traditionally, Ayurveda has used the practice of bloodletting through the use of leeches or needles to treat skin- or blood-related disorders. Ayurvedic texts written between 3,500 and 1,800 BC mention the first functioning artificial limb. The story is that the warrior Queen Vishpala was fitted with an iron prosthetic after she lost her leg in battle. DIPTHERIA

C/He/I-20 Dec 17

I have had several parents contact me with concerns about the current Diptheria outbreak here in Indonesia. Schools are also sending home letters with warnings about this disease. But should you be worried? What is Diptheria? Diphtheria is a life-threatening communicable disease that spreads through air containing Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The bacteria attack the upper respiratory system, leading to symptoms such as high fever, sore throat, difficulties in swallowing, and shortness of breath. The bacteria can also spread through spits and coughs and contaminated objects. When they enter the body, they release toxins. The toxins spread through the blood and can cause damage in the body system, especially the heart and nervous system. This can lead to death. Why the Worry? The diphtheria outbreak has become a major problem in Indonesia since 2011. East Java, with a 35 million population, is the most severely affected area contributing approximately 80% of the total cases in the country. Indonesia has among the world’s highest rates of diphtheria - along with India and sub-Saharan African countries - even though vaccinations have helped minimize global cases over the past 30 years. The World Health Organization recorded about 7,000 cases around the world last year. In 1980, the figure was 100,000. Between January and November 2017, the Indonesian government has recorded 593 diphtheria cases, spread across 95 regencies in 20 provinces. The death toll has reached 32. The World Health Organization data on diphtheria shows that the number of cases in Indonesia has fl uctuated since the 1980s.

As a vaccine preventable disease, these deaths should not be occurring, however none of those affected in Indonesia had been vaccinated against the disease…why? Medical Factors Several medical factors have contributed to the outbreak of diptheria: 1.

2.

3.

4.

No or Incomplete immunization - According to data the diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (DPT) immunisation coverage for children between 2 and 6 year old in Indonesia is only 75.6%. The ideal coverage is above 90%. Vaccine distribution and storage - Distribution of vaccines from the central government to the regions has logistical problems of storage temperature and transportation conditions. Once the vaccines lose their potency, it is irreversible; the vaccines are no longer effective. Vaccines are very sensitive to heat, and some also to freezing temperature. Fake vaccines - In 2016 a huge fake vaccine scandal was uncovered where the perpetrators were refilling original vials with water and reselling them. This has created a huge population of children that may not actually have received any valid vaccines at all. Vaccines are not always 100% effective. The DTaP (Diptheria, Tetanus & Pertussis or Whooping Cough) has about 95% efficacy at the completion of the initial course, however this will decrease over time which is why this vaccine needs to be boosted every 10 years after the childhood program is complete.

Non-Medical Factors and People’s View of Vaccines Apart from medical factors, there are others causing the increase of incidence: 1. 2. 3.

C/NV/G-30 Aug. 17

Many parents do not want to deal with side effects of DPT immunization, including the fever. Densely populated neighborhoods and houses allow for faster spread of the disease. The news about fake vaccines in June 2016 still affect

some parents trust on vaccines even though the government has taken measures by conducting re-immunization. Some parents who have lower education level sometimes neglect the importance of good sanitation and immunization schedule Lack of healthy lifestyle education in schools makes students vulnerable to diphtheria infection. Some parents believe that vaccines are prohibited under Islamic law (haram). The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) has countered this, saying that vaccines are not haram. Some believe that vaccines are not necessary as immunity is present in every one, and that the important thing is to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

If you really want to avoid having you or your family exposed to this or other vaccine preventable diseases, check your vaccine records, and update them as necessary (adults as well as children). Naturally adopt a healthy lifestyle, and report any severe symptoms to your doctor immediately.

12 For the Best Medical Outcome it Pays to Research If you live in Bali where do you go when you have a life-threatening medical condition requiring cutting edge medical treatment to survive? Immediately you ask the question some obvious questions arise. What is the condition and where do they treat it best? What are my chances of a successful outcome? If I am insured, will my insurance cover the cost whole or in part and, if not, what do I do? Should I go back to my country of origin, where I have a right to medical treatment? If I do, can they perform the procedure I need and do it successfully? For Australians living in Bali the answer is simple. Most procedures are obtainable in Australia and it makes sense to be treated there where the cost is covered by what is commonly regarded as one of the best national medical systems in the world. Same would broadly apply to New Zealanders, though not all the most complex procedures may be on offer there. Unless we have residency in Singapore or Hong Kong let’s say, the rest of us would be looking at a longer haul journey back to our respective countries in Europe or North America. Others of us would be checking out the possibilities of Thailand, India & Malaysia. In my own experience of this, when my wife - who is French was diagnosed with critical aortic stenosis, a condition which is invevitably terminal without an immediate aortic valve replacement, we went to France. Given that she was entitled to medical treatment in France, whose state medical system is also highly regarded, and the fact that her condition precluded open heart surgery, combined with the fact that the French were the first to introduce the aortic valve replacement via arterial cathetarisation (TAVI) back in 2000, the decision was pretty much a given. The TAVI procedure was successfully performed in an Australianowned private hospital just South of Paris in the first week of September this year by one of the foremost exponents of the procedure. Unfortunately, my wife who also suffers from atrial fibrilation, required a subsequent procedure to install a pacemaker. This operation is relatively routine and was performed by one of the hospitals other cardiologists. Now, five procedures later and as many months on, she is finally out of hospital and we are contemplating our return home. In short, we had a very up-close and personal experience of the strengths and failings of the medical system in France. Unquestionably the TAVI procedure saved her life. However the follow-up treatment and cardiac rehabilitation was botched. In France private hospitals cannot pick and choose their patients, they have to treat everyone – and then... make a buck for their shareholders. That can lead to some very confl icted and unhappy hospitals. On the other hand, medicine in France tends toward the authoritarian and the public sector can be rigid and uncaring in application. Couple that with major cuts in social spending introduced by France’s new president Macron, overworked and underpaid nurses, and you can see why patients are being discharged from hospitals too soon in order to free up beds and the bad results that ensue. Along with making a living, healthcare and housing are the two most important social needs any society faces and in the developed world things are not going well. When it comes to health, at whatever age - we need to inform ourselves and act accordingly. For increasing numbers of us adequate medical cover is now too expensive and, if we can, we must look to effective state cover for the basics, topped up with an additional policy to take care of the rest. That done we need to inform ourselves as to where to go to get effective treatment? What hospitals get good results and those that don’t? Which doctors or surgeons to seek out and which to avoid? What your entitlements and rights to treatment are and how you can expect to be treated when hospitalised? Given the way the medical world is headed you need to know these things. In France, and probably elswhere, one of the best sources I know to find out how things really are is to ask

the paramedics and ambulance companies serving hospitals. These men and women see it all. They know which doctors save lives and which kill people, the nurses who brutalise and demean and those who succour and sustain. There is also a lot of published research data. So much so, that it can confuse rather than elucidate. One of the best of these for general purposes is the annual survey comparing the medical systems in eleven of the leading developed nations published by the Commonwealth Fund, an independent US foundation established in 1918 to promote health internationally. The survey ranks five key aspects: the Care Process (preventative, safe care, co-ordination & patient involvement); Access (affordability & timeliness); Administrative Efficiency (coverage restrictions, insurance liaison, records & tests); Equity (treatment of low & high income patients, timeliness & barriers to care) and Health Outcomes, which speaks for itself. The countries and their overall rankings were: (1) UK, (2) Australia, (3) Nederlands, (4) New Zealand & Norway, (6) Sweden & Switzerland, (8) Germany, (9) Canada, (10) France, (11) USA. The USA was the clear outlier, trailing substantially in almost all categories, except the Care Process. The UK was in the top three in all categories except Health Care Outcomes, where it was second last. However it should be noted that the UK still had the biggest reduction in fatalities for 2 years running, whereas the US, who came in last, had the least. Australia is impressive: top in Healthcare Outcomes and Administrative Efficiency, interestingly trailing only in the Equity sector, where it came in seventh. All the European countries surveyed delivered results above the 11-country average with the exception of France, joined by Canada and the USA. France did not score well in any of the categories with the significant exception of Healthcare Outcomes, where it came in 5th. It does however have the highest ratio of doctors per population. Back in 2000 the World Health Organisation (WHO) published its survey of the best medical systems over 190 countries. Though interesting its results make sense only when you understand the main criteria was what their health experts considered “what is achievable in that country”. Not necessarily the information you’re looking for. Here France comes No.1, while the other European countries in the Commonwealth Foundation report come in the 17-25 bracket, with the US at 37 and NZ at 41. Singapore weighed in at No. 6, Japan (10th), Malaysia (49), Thailand (47), Malaysia (49), Indonesia (92), India (112) & China (141). There were other surveys through 2017, usually by organisations or publications dealing with wealth or expat living, which variously rank highly such countries as Singapore, Malaysia, Israel, Columbia, Costa Rica, Qatar and Oman. While other factors than strictly medical are involved another metric to look at might be the countries whose citizens live the longest, which measured by WHO in 2015 shows (1) Japan 83.7, (2) Switzerland 83.4, (3) Singapore 83.1, (4) Australia 82.8, (9) Sweden & France 82.4 ,(12) Canada 82.2, (14) Nederlands 81.4, 9200 UK 81.2, (24) Germany 81.0, (31) USA 79.3. Of course much depends on the cost and complexity of what needs to be done. I have been told by various people in Bali and elswhere in Asia how they have been successfully treated and very affordably so, in Bankok, in Penang and in India. For this good judgement and referrals from someone who knows are strongly indicated. From my own experience, Singapore is excellent and particularly good value diagnostically. However when it comes to costs of operations for non-residents it is a lot more expensive than Europe and Australia but less so than the US or Hong Kong.

15 Keeping a First Aid Kit for your Pets In a previous Bali Advertiser article we discussed how pet owners can be best prepared for a natural or manmade disaster (see ‘Disaster Preparedness for your Pets’ in the online archive). In part 2 of this theme we discuss how pet owners can optimize their preparedness for common veterinary emergencies by keeping a dedicated ‘Pet First Aid Kit’ at home, which can not only save money on vet visits but also in some cases save a life. Situations where a ‘Pet First Aid Kit’ can be useful: 1. Oral Poisoning 2. Cuts/Wounds 3. Hot spots 4. Snake bites 5. Allergic reactions 6. Bleeding nails/ears Oral Poisoning Poisoning is one of the most common emergencies treated at Sunset Vet. Although the term ‘poisoning’ can refer to the ingestion of any toxin – owner’s medications, chocolate, slug repellent etc, in Bali the most frequent type encountered is malicious poisoning as perpetrated by the RW (dog meat) restaurants. The modus operandi of the RW dog catchers is to leave poisoned meatballs on the street or in public areas, and then return later to collect the dead or dying dogs. If you see your dog eat a suspicious piece of bait: 1. Remove your pet from the source of poison 2. Induce vomiting if poison was ingested within the hour. Draw H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) 3% out of a bottle using the syringe. The dose is 1 ml of H2O2 per 1 kg of body weight. Remove the syringe and administer the liquid orally into your dog’s mouth. Walk your dog after administration (when possible). Wait for reaction within 10-15 minutes. If your dog weighs more than 45 kg, give 45 ml. PS: Never induce vomiting if your dog: is unable to swallow, having seizures, or already vomiting. Never induce vomiting in cats. 3. Once the dog has already vomited, or if the dog has still not vomited 20 minutes after swallowing the hydrogen peroxide, proceed to give the activated charcoal. Small dog/cat: 20 tablets. Large dog: 40 tablets If tablet administration is not possible, crush the tablets in a bowl using the back of a spoon, mix with water, and administer using a syringe. 4. Take your animal to the nearest veterinarian immediately 5. Observe for any symptoms during transport such as hypersalivation, tremors, convulsions, unconsciousness, bleeding, breathing difficulties

the venom of 3 of the aforementioned species, all but the King Cobra. The antivenom is expensive though so if you know for certain that the species of snake was not a venomous one, then your vet will choose not to give the antivenom as this avoids the small chance of an anaphylactic reaction to the antivenom itself. 1. Take a photo of the snake / note the special features of the snake if possible 2. Hold the area bitten higher than the rest of the body. Keep your dog calm. 3. Give antihistamine tablets with the following dose: a. 0-3 kg : 1/3 tablet b. 3-5 kg : ½ tablet c. 6-10 kg : 1 tablet d. 11-15 kg : 1 ½ tablets e. 16-20 kg : 2 tablets f. 20-25 kg : 2 ½ tablets g. 25-30 kg : 3 tablets 4. Take regular body temperature readings 5. Take your animal to the nearest veterinarian immediately. Your dog needs IV fl uids and possibly anti-venom, and pain relief. 6. Observe for any symptoms during transport such as hypersalivation, tremors, convulsions, unconsciousness, breathing difficulties In case of spitting cobra venom Spitting cobras usually spit venom to the face making the eyes very vulnerable. 1. Clean the eyes with the sterile water in your Pet First Aid Kit 2. Take your animal to the nearest veterinarian for IV fl uids immediately Allergic Reactions (Insect bites/stings, food sensitivities) 1. Symptoms to observe for: panting, hives, sudden onset swelling, itchiness 2. Give antihistamine tablets (dose as written above in snake bite section) 3. Take your pet to the nearest veterinarian for observation as he/ she is in risk of shock.

A cut is best dealt with by your local vet, who will be able to advise you whether any stitches are required or not. However it is useful to have materials to hand to temporarily stop the bleeding and also to protect the wound to stop it getting traumatized further, or bacteria entering the wound. 1. Clean the wounded area from debris with running water (if any) 2. Clean the wound with chlorhexidine. This pink soap is the most common antiseptic used in veterinary clinics. It needs to be diluted first by water, and dabbed onto a piece of cotton wool. 3. Cover the area with hydrophile gauge. If the wound is superficial, apply povidone iodine 4. If the wound is on the limb, wrap some ‘softband’ lightly above the gauge. Thereafter wrap some ‘vetwrap’ on top of the softband. Do not apply too much pressure as it may cause swelling and blood fl ow obstruction 5. Take your animal to the nearest veterinarian immediately

Sunset Vet offers ready-made pet first aid kits from their Kuta and Ubud clinics for approximately Rp.400k, alternatively you can make your own using the following items: Kit Contents: Thermometer Hydrophile gauge Softband Vetwrap Cotton wool Gloves Syringe 10 ml Sterile water

Snake bite Bali has numerous species of snakes but only a handful are considered highly venomous; the Javanese Spitting Cobra, the King Cobra, the Green Pit Viper and the Banded Krait. The most common injury to dogs is from spitting cobras, which are common in Bali particularly in areas where there is a lot of garbage, as they are attracted there by the rodents. There is only one type of antivenom available in Bali known as a polyvalent antivenom as it covers

THROUGH THEIR OWN EYES At the same time, two photography students, Simone and Merel, are working with children with disabilities in a different way, providing them with cameras, teaching them how to use them, and encouraging them to express the world through their eyes. The result is a thought-provoking and inspiring exhibition at Taksu Photo Gallery in Jalan Raya Ubud; it opened last week and will continue to January 6. SEARCH INSIDE (LIKE GOOGLE) In March 2018, Hubud is bringing us the renowned Search Inside Yourself (SIY) Program - a mindfulness leadership program developed at Google to help us stretch our emotional intelligence in five key ways.Led by Google trainer/ entrepreneur Yizhao, participants will be shown how to combine mindfulness practices, neuroscience and leadership applications, to focus on the five domains of emotional intelligence - self-awareness, selfregulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. This combination can lead to stronger leadership, creativity, and communication, intensifying focus, managing stress and improving resilience as individuals and in organisations.

Every Day Matters This time of year so many people around the world are shopping for gifts to celebrate Christmas and prepare for New Year’s eve festivities. For many, Christmas is a time to gather with family and friends to share happy memories and create new ones. At least this is the image that is portrayed by the media and shopping malls worldwide that display stereos, the latest iPhones, drones and other nifty gadgets to buy for our kids or ourselves. Flashing Christmas lights and fake Christmas trees, synthetic decorations, wrapping paper and sparkling bows entice us to buy more and more and more. Yet for many, this is not a time of celebration. Perhaps some people are far away from their families like I am. We feel the guilt of not being together during this special time of year when everyone else is celebrating Christmas and New Year’s with their loved ones. I spoke to a friend on the phone today who told me that her cousin’s wife died of cancer on Christmas Eve. She opened gifts that night with her children and afterwards said she was tired and wanted to go to bed early but passed away. She left behind a loving husband and two children ages 8 and 11. For this family, the holidays will never be the same. Other families around the world don’t have enough food to eat or they live in a house with a dirt fl oor and broken walls made from bamboo leaves. A friend of mine sent around a what’s app message asking if anyone would like to donate to a family in Java that were living in these conditions. They needed help to build a proper home for their family. This is the reality of life in many developing countries. While others are celebrating Christmas and exchanging gifts that cost more than an average person’s monthly salary in Indonesia, there are so many people in the world that are barely surviving, who are suffering from serious illnesses, grief or starvation. It is an important reminder to us all that one day out of the year in which there is a gross amount of money spent on material goods could actually be transformed to a day of ‘genuine giving’ to all those who are truly in need of food, shelter and love. I know that there will be some people who read this column who may be angered by what I have said. I also know that there will be others who will understand and are already contributing to the world through acts of kindness and generosity. I honestly don’t miss the festivities of Christmas any more as living on Bali for nearly 16 years has been a great teacher. Every day I see the Balinese put out offerings and pray to the Gods, giving thanks, asking for forgiveness and protection for their families and villages. Every day is sacred here which is why Bali is such a beautiful place to live. The Balinese do have their special days throughout the year such as Galungan, Kuningan, and Nyepi, but they still honor each day

C/E/I-05 July 17

and always help one another in their communities. We saw the amazing collective efforts during the time of the impending eruption of Mt. Agung. Banjars throughout Bali organized shelter for thousands of Balinese who were in the danger zones. This Spirit lives in all of the Balinese and is not exclusive to just one or two days of the year. So as we all begin 2018 what can we do individually or as part of our communities to help one another? Here is a list of some possibilities of how we can create a better world: 1. Put together bags filled with essentials such as toothpaste, soap, toothbrushes, pens, etc. for the children in poor villages and give them directly to the kids. 2. Volunteer your time with a Yayasan or NGO that resonates with you. 3. Donate money to an organization or non profit that you feel is really helping the community you live in or in another country. 4. Offer your services at a big discount or free to those who would really benefit from your help but not be able to afford it. 5. Donate clothes, toys, furniture, technology or other equipment to a NGO or family. 6. Sponsor a child in Indonesia or another developing country for their education costs. 7. Volunteer to be a big brother or sister to a child in need and give them new experiences, help them with school work, etc. 8. Teach English to the local kids in your neighborhood. 9. If you own a business on Bali or employ someone to care for your home, please pay your staff a fair wage and offer them opportunities for personal/professional development. 10. Share your knowledge with the world! How did you become successful? What are the secrets to living an abundant life and still be a contribution to the world?

Gardening with Washing ‘Dear Garden Doctor, Is it safe to re-use greywater from my washing machine on the garden and would it have any beneficial effects on my plants. A lot of the literature I have read gives confl icting reports, what is your opinion? Regards Jim, Sanur’ Watching the news recently it seems odd that Jakarta is in the midst of a drinking water crisis when the city is usually underwater at this time of year. Likewise Bali has water supply issues of it’s own, meanwhile every morning I see people out hosing the street! Using greywater is a thoughtful idea not only for the benefits to the garden but also as a way to conserve potable drinking water that seems to be rapidly disappearing by the day. And this doesn’t even take into consideration the beneficial effect of withdrawing toxic chemicals from the aquatic environment into which our waste water is typically dumped. The rivers around Denpasar unfortunately became algae choked sewers a long time ago, lets make sure it doesn’t happen elsewhwhere on the island. The average household produces hundreds of litres of greywater each day - why not use it productively on the plants? A lot of that water that goes down the drain is essentially wasted, and would be put to better use as irrigation in the garden. To clarify, greywater refers to waste water from the laundry or bathroom sinks and showers, but definitely not the toilet which is termed ‘black water’ for obvious reasons. Yes of course you can use greywater in the garden for the benefit of plants. Look for the most ecofriendly detergent that you can find or even develop your own - now there’s a new years resolution for you! There may be a lot of trial and error involved, but that’s half the fun anyway isn’t it? That’s why gambling is so addictive for some, they never know for sure that they will win...even though it’s always a sure thing, right? I digress.

All of these concerns can be disregarded if you simply find the most efficient ecofriendly method to wash. Low phosphate and even phosphate free detergents are available and these will lower the amount of harmful residues in greywater from the laundry. Laundry detergents in developing countries such as Indonesia with lax environmental regulation are typically heavily laden with phosphates. Australia phased out phosphates in laundry detergents back in 2014, but over here big business will get away with whatever they can while they can.

greywater system laundry to landscape is as easy as removing the discharge hose from the drain, connecting it to an extension and running it out into the garden. This will enable you to manually reuse grey water every time you do the laundry. It is best discharged onto a surface mulch, which filters the particles enabling greywater to soak into the soil more evenly.

In general plants that are adapted to a coastal environment will do much better on grey water as they will cope with the Typical laundry detergents are highly alkaline. If you use a higher salt content, plants such as frangipani, palms, hibiscus, large amount of detergent it’s better to use only the water from hydrangea, most succulents and herbs such as rosemary the last rinse cycle which will have both a lower level of salinity and lavender will always do well. Avoid using greywater on and lower pH. Better still figure out how to get the cleanest acid loving plants such as citrus, tomatoes and azaleas. You clothes with the least detergents. Become a minimalist in life can safely irrigate edible plants as long as the greywater and laundry - great things will happen! doesn’t contact the edible portion (no root crops and salads). Fruit trees will do well.

If detergents are used at such a high potency that it can kill your garden then think about what it’s doing to the rivers and oceans where the waste water ordinarily fl ows directly without filtration. On the other hand, detergent laden water is really Never rely solely on greywater to irrigate the garden if you good to water over the aphids and scale that may be attacking are new to the concept. Greywater quality will vary your favorite plants, I know that it removed the mealy bugs dramatically depending on the types of detergents and from my citrus with no harmful effects to the plant :) additives used which will have a major impact on soil and plant health. It is advisable to use detergents that are Common laundry detergents typically contain sodium salts biodegradable and low in salts. Detergents are alkaline and such as sodium nitrate, sodium sulphate, sodium phosphate over use may increase soil pH affecting plants by limiting and sodium silicate. They are highly saline, and frequent use their uptake of essential trace elements. will harm your garden long-term, unless it is used sparingly and distributed over a large area. The main concern with using greywater on the garden is the build up of salts in the soil, increasing alkalinity and resulting Look for biodegradable, phosphate free and low concentrate. high soil pH. Spread your grey water around, don’t always Forget about softeners, whiteners, bleaches and oxyaction water it in the same spot. Use greywater before rain to blah blah blah...yes for a great garden we have to make sacrifices! take advantage of the dilution effect. Take into account your soil type when using greywater. The odds of detrimental Now let’s assume that you have got your washing routine compounds building up in clay is greater than that of sandy down to the fine art of extracting the most dirt with the least detergent, then you can really start watering. With a simple soil.

If you overdo it and your plants are looking sick add a general trace element mix every few months until the problems clear up. Addition of gypsum will also help to neutralise the increase in salts. Load the organic matter into your soil because compost will naturally buffer the pH and also improves soil health. Many have reported only positive effects from greywater - once again this all depends on the quality of the greywater in question. It all seems a bit concerning that you could damage your garden with greywater but it’s really not that complicated - it’s just that I prefer to err on the side of caution when advising others to use it. I have only had good results when using greywater, except for the time I wiped out a few tomato plants. It all depends on the detergent and ratio used. If in doubt start using it on your more hardy plants such as the frangipani, succulents or a patch of grass up the back of the garden first, and then go from there if all is well. Greywater is a valuable resource when used correctly, not only saving potable drinking water from being wasted on garden beds but also withdrawing toxic chemicals from aquatic ecosystems. And just think...we’ll have all that extra water so that we can keep on hosing the street!

With Mt. Agung huffing and puffing… The Lighthouse Bali Shines On Outreach volunteers at The Lighthouse Bali are busy gathering and distributing much-needed supplies for the Balinese who have been evacuated from their homes on the slopes of Bali’s majestic Mount Agung. Since the evacuations began in September, the volcano has sputtered with ash plumes ranging from quite small to a height of 3000 m above the top of the crater. There is no telling how long this activity might continue – in the meantime, 70,000 people have been evacuated from the mountain and spread throughout 237 points of refuge, according to Indonesia’s National Board for Disaster Countermeasure (“BNPB”). The Lighthouse receives donations from private parties - mainly expats living in Bali, but also supporters of the organization from around the world. In addition to providing support for those in crisis, Alice Dill Prasetyoko, the founder of The Lighthouse Bali, explains that the primary mission of their organization is to improve the health and well-being of people struggling with drug addiction, alcoholism, HIV and AIDS. To work towards these goals, The Lighthouse has two primary areas of focus: 1) Private drug and alcohol treatment programs for individuals struggling with substance abuse 2) Outreach to those in Indonesia struggling with basic urgent needs (as in the case of the Mt. Agung evacuees), and education to the Indonesian people about addiction, harm reduction, HIV and AIDS. Alice and her Indonesian husband, Wira “Danu”, enjoy a remarkably high success rate with their private recovery clients, as well as a fantastic reputation in the industry of addiction services. While the majority of their clients are

Australian, they have also worked with clients from Saudi Arabia, Holland, Hong Kong, England, America, Canada and other locations around the world. Often, their clients have tried a “go” with traditional rehabs and found the “one size fits all” approach just didn’t work for them. The Lighthouse attributes its success to the individual one-on-one care provided to each client. They never take more than 3 clients at any one time, setting up private programs for each person in a private villa with support staff, counselling, education, recovery tools workshops, recovery community support… and self-care in the form of massages, wellness programs, healthy food prepared by a private chef and interesting excursions around the island. Treatment stays are tailored for the financial and time-constraint issues of each client - typically ranging from 28 days to 6 months (with primary and outpatient programs available). Having worked in the traditional “group” rehab environment, both in America and in Southeast Asia, Alice saw the need for something different. “While a group dynamic works extremely well is many instances, not everyone fits into the same mould,” she says. “We are able to offer our clients a program that works specifically for them - some clients prefer swimming in the ocean instead of yoga for their morning exercise; one client might be better served with our British counsellor, while someone else might benefit more from our counsellor from Australia. We provide each client with a high level of respect, as opposed to the ‘boot camp with a babysitter’ type of approach often found in traditional rehabs. A huge part of our program is geared towards integration back into society and relapse prevention - areas often overlooked in other programs.”

Outreach to those suffering from addiction is spearheaded by Alice’s husband, Danu, himself a recovering heroin addict. He and a team of volunteers often visit those in prison, including members of Australia’s infamous Bali Nine, and they give talks at local schools, neighbourhood centers and other non-profit facilities. Danu has a remarkable story of addiction and recovery. His strength and enthusiasm for recovery are infectious. Having been homeless during his addiction, last year, Danu was invited to join Indonesia’s street soccer team at the Homeless World Cup games in Glasgow, Scotland - an opportunity of a lifetime and one close to Danu’s heart. Competing with teams from over 50 countries, every player had his or her own remarkable journey through incredible hardship - be it addiction, disability, violence or poverty, coming together in sportsmanship and love to carry the empowering message of breaking stigmas. For more information on the Homeless World Cup, please visit their website: homelessworldcup.org.

Having worked in the non-profit environment for many years - mainly with a focus on addiction or HIV/AIDS education – Danu is perfectly suited to head the outreach efforts of The Lighthouse. With her past experience in the field of addiction treatment, as well as over two decades of personal recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, Alice falls right into the role of facilitating the private clients’ addiction treatment program. Together, Danu When the client is feeling more stable in their recovery and Alice make an amazing team - one that thrives in their process, they are encouraged to participate in The Lighthouse’s chosen area of expertise. community outreach programs - whether that is providing food and fun to children who live in a marginalized For more information about The Lighthouse Bali, please community, an animal halfway house, or those recent Mt. contact them: info@thelighthousebali.org Telp : +62 858 5731 3512 Agung evacuees - many options are available.

MORE GOOD NEWS!! Rotarian Jeni Kardinal’s project application to Australia’s Direct Aid Program has been funded! The project will translate a gorgeously illustrated book about saving our environment from English to Indonesian. Children will love it!

DISAPPOINTMENT, TO DELIGHT…!!!

FROM

Rotary Club Bali Seminyak worked long and hard on a project that would give a bus to the Puspadi Bali Foundation. Puspadi Bali works across the island providing 100% free services to handicapped and disabled community members. The Foundation supplies wheelchairs, does physiotherapy, makes and fits prosthetics, brings information about safety practices, diabetes, and much more to poor communities throughout Bali. A huge barrier for the disabled is the difficulty they face trying to reach the Puspadi Bali free clinic in Denpasar. It is frequently impossible for many of our disabled to travel on the back of a motorbike. And for Puspadi Bali, delivering wheelchairs to patients was limited to one wheelchair at a time, tied on to the back of a motorcycle. Clearly, it made sense for Puspadi Bali to turn things around by bringing their services TO the disabled…and thus the need for a specially outfitted bus. The hoped-for bus didn’t materialize. The project application was turned down by Rotary International. Rotarians from

Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, USA, and Bali were hugely disappointed, as was Pak Latra, Director of Puspadi Bali. BUT IPP Marie Francoise and PEN Dr. Patrick Monsarrat refused to simply live with this disappointment. “We’ll raise the money for the bus independently”, they said. And in a short time they’d raised almost half the cost of the bus! In the meantime Pres Alex, in the course of his duties as GM at the Trans Resort Bali, met a remarkably kind and generous young man who asked about the club’s current projects. When this big hearted person heard about the need for the bus he asked “How much more money do you need?” and donated that amount for the bus. The bus could now actually be purchased!!!

Rotarians Florian Nitsch and Marilyn Carson have submitted project applications to Rotary District 3420 for two small projects. One will teach young people how to raise organic foods in their school gardens and the second will provide scholarships to poverty level students. Fingers crossed these projects get funded. The power of a great idea, perseverance and crowd funding was what made it possible for Jeroen van Overbeek and his team at Social Impakt - www.social-impakt.com - to raise sufficient funds for 1500 water filters….all destined for distribution to villagers in Karangasem, many living in evacuee camps. Put the dirtiest of water into one of these fileters and WOW!!!...it’s clean and potable.

The bus is now being specially equipped for handicapped patients and will give Puspadi Bali the transportation to bring their services to the disabled living in distant communities. Club members have run the gamut of emotions, from disappointment to DELIGHT! Indeed, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way!”

From Rotary Club Bali Seminyak, we send you our best wishes for this New Year! Marilyn Carson Copyright © 2018 Rotary News You can read all past articles of Rotary News at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Kitchen helpers. Of immense and welcome help to expats and cooks in home kitchens are two books published by Jakarta’s American Women’s Association (AWA): A Jakarta Market (Rp100,000) is an easy to understand guide to local markets with descriptions of vegetables, fruits and spices listed by their Indonesian names, their common English names and their scientific names along with drawings for easy identification. Foods Galore (Rp150,000) is an invaluable cookbook designed to teach Bahasa Indonesian speakers how to cook Western recipes and to introduce expatriates to classic Indonesian recipes. Also included are household hints and a comprehensive glossary of cooking terms and ingredients. Visit www.awajakarta.org or contact Sunshine Biskaps at President@awajakarta.org. Sales of all AWA publications support AWA and its charities. Homemade Metamucil. The natural dietary fiber food supplement Metamucil - not available on Bali for love or money – prevents constipation by increasing water in the stool, thus making it softer and easier to pass. The only commercial alternative on Bali are tiny packets of the sickeningly sweet orange- or grape-fl avored Vegeta (Rp22,500/12). Instead, make your own concoction by first buying two 150-gr packet (Rp46,000) of the natural bulk-forming laxative Psyllium husks at Green Habit Health Food Store (Jl. Raya Semer, Kerobokan, open Mon.-Sat. 10 am-7 pm), then mix it with 500 gr of organic fiber rich rice grain husk (kulit beras) milled with a food processor into a fine, less grainy powder. Don’t use rice husks from a farmer’s supply store (toko petani) that may be contaminated with chemical pesticide. Or simply add pure Psyllium husks to fruit juice or water but drink it immediately before it gels up. (If it becomes too thick when consuming, add more liquid and stir.) Rice husks along with a proper diet is used to treat high cholesterol and is a valuable source of phenolic acids which work as a natural antioxidant.

The main problem with single-use menstrual pads are the potentially dangerous chemicals they contain which are derived from the petroleum and forestry industries. Other problems are the significant cost for women living in poverty, the natural resources required to make them and the huge waste management issues they create when disposed of. There are sustainable alternatives for feminine hygiene products out there. An international NGO at www.daysforgirls.org is dedicated to empower girls and women worldwide by providing quality and safe sustainable menstrual products. The Rungu brand washable cotton feminine hygiene kits, made in Ubud, are made of unbleached 100% cotton fl annel pads. Sold through www.dewirungu.com, this light, attractive kit has been adapted for tropical conditions. The fl annel is imported from Japan. Head off trouble. Competitive time deposits. There are some very decent rates for short term deposits in Indonesia, a lot better than in Australia. Shop around. All banks advertise different rates and the rates and terms constantly change. Some local banks offer rates higher than the big banks but can be riskier. For example, BPR and other small/mid banks offer substantial time deposit returns, as high as 12%, while “reputable” nation-wide banks such as BNI, Mandiri and HSBC Premier give only 6.5% to 7.5% per annum. They are as safe as your bank back home and, if within the governments declared interest rates, are insured. The standard withholding tax is 20%.

Restaurant & Food An abundance of millet and a can of chickpeas inspired this excellent vegetarian main course salad. It’s refreshing on these hot monsoon days and keeps well in the fridge. The Moroccan Spice mixture is an added plus to have on hand to mix into yogurt for a dip, with eggs, on roasted veggies, or into a tomato sauce.

Moroccan Millet and Chickpea Salad Serves 8

Ingredients: - 1/2 kg carrots cut on the diagonal 2-3 mm thick - 1/2 cup red onion or shallots, thinly sliced - 1 Tbl. olive oil - 1 Tbl. Moroccan spice blend (see recipe below) - 2/3 cups uncooked millet - 1 cup canned chickpeas, rinsed - 3 Tbl. olive oil - 4 Tbl. lemon juice - 1/3 cup slivered almonds, toasted - 1/4 cup sundried tomatoes, sliced - 1 1/2 cups Italian parsley, coarsely chopped - 1/3 cup cilantro, coarsely chopped - 2 Tbl. chopped preserved lemon - salt and pepper to taste - 1/2 cup goat or feta cheese - 2 Tbl. olive oil – if needed

On a rimmed cookie sheet combine 1 Tbl. olive oil with the carrot and onion slices and the Moroccan spice mix. Toss well. Slide the sheet into the preheated oven and roast for 20 – 25 minutes, turning the veggies with a spatula from time to time so they brown evenly. While this is roasting, cook the millet in a pot with a lid. Bring 1½ cups water and a pinch of salt to a boil, add the millet, stir well and then cover the pot. Lower the heat to a simmer and let the millet cook for about 20 minutes or until almost all the water is evaporated and the millet is cooked. Let this stand, covered, for 5 minutes then fl uff with a fork. In a large bowl, toss the roasted carrot and onion mixture with the cooked millet, the chickpeas, 3 Tbl. olive oil, and the lemon juice. Now add the roasted almonds, the sundried tomatoes, the parsley and coriander leaves, preserved lemon, salt and pepper and toss this well. Finally add the cheese and toss again. Taste for salt and pepper, adding 1-2 Tbl. more olive oil if the salad is too dry. For the Moroccan Spice Mixture: In a small bowl mix together: - 1 tsp. ground cumin (I like to dry roast this first) - 1 tsp. ground ginger - 1 tsp. salt - 3/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper - 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon - 1/2 tsp. ground coriander seeds - 1/2 tsp. cayenne - 1/2 tsp. ground allspice - 1/4 tsp. ground cloves - 1/4 tsp. ground cardamom I prefer to dry roast the mixture in a heavy frying pan until there is a beautiful aroma filling the kitchen, but that’s optional.

The Wrap of 2017 Every year in Bali there seems to be a new restaurant trend. One place succeeds with something different and then many follow suit. In 2016 it was hamburgers [20 years behind the rest of the world], the previous year Tapas, though few were the original Spanish, just in name only. A few years further back many places wanted to be called Mediterranean often with only a Greek salad and a few pastas dishes. 2017 saw the arrival of the dry-aged beef restaurants. It had begun with Hong Kong’s Butchers’ Club in 2016, but Salazon and the up-market Boy N Cow soon followed this past year, more are on the way.

There are 5 steps for a salad each with a separate cost; base, toppings, garnish, protein and dressing. At the Sens Hotel on Tebasaya is Yonne restaurant, with traditional Cantonese dishes from Hong Kong chef Hui Chung Piu. Jellyfish Salad, now that is very Chinese! Pizza Bagus is 25 years in existence but they have finally moved to their own premises, with a large parking area for the restaurant and deli. On Dewi Sita, once Ubud’s coffee street, the Locavore group opened their 4th site, all within 50 metres, a fine dining Indonesian named Nusantara.

Ubud was the centre of activity in 2016 but in 2017 that moved to the Canggu area however Kerobokan saw many openings and closings as usual, though many of them still want to refer to their area as being in Seminyak. But the greatest thing that happened this year was the continued emergence of great young local chefs, those who had worked for a number of years with international chefs, been able to absorb the knowledge and had the work ethic to succeed. Exciting times ahead! Lovina on Bali’s northern coast saw little change except from that man Marinos who opened yet another Greek restaurant as he does not seem to understand the meaning of the word ‘retired’, almost in the centre of town, it is called Cafe Greco. Not satisfied with just that he also opened a Greek nightclub next door, Pyramid, with bar snacks from the restaurant. Ubud had less new openings than the previous year but still they came, and went. An old favourite, The Melting Pot, the largest and most professionally run sports bar in Bali, had always offered a few interesting bar snacks but has now extended the building to provide new larger kitchen and eating areas. On offer is the full range of Texan cuisine, featuring all the most popular dishes of that state irrespective of their origin. Tex-Mex is to the fore [great quesadillas and tortillas], as well as a wonderful Gumbo from Louisiana and very traditional bowls of Texan Chilli. The Chilli is hot and fiery, meant to be drowned with your favourite beer. BBQ Ribs, of course! A steakhouse with a difference is Batu Bara, self-styled as an Argentine grillery! A difficult place to find behind a very narrow entrance [next to the Café Arma car park], that has not held it back, as it is busy every night. Their Empanadas [half moon shaped pastries stuffed with either cheese or beef] are essential ordering to fill in the time whilst your choice of beef is being prepared. The steaks are finished off at your table on small trays of hot embers.

Best Cheap Eat @ Pekandelan

Just outside of Ubud at the entrance to The Waterfall of Tegenungan, Kemenuh is our Cheap Eat find of the year, The Pekandelan Warung, spread on the side of a hill under the tamarind trees. Owner, chef and manager are all ex staff from Ubud’s famous fine dining restaurant, CasCades. It is amazing what quality cuisine they are producing, and at warung prices. A Cordon Bleu with a difference, chicken breast rolled around ham and cheese, cross-sliced. Soft Shell Crab, a hollowed out bun filled with chicken curry, crumbed minced meat balls, inside a nut of cheese. All so simple, tasty and cheap! Great things from a young Balinese chef. The Best New Cheap Eat of 2017. Many new places opened along The ByPass in central Sanur, all trying to buck the trend of repeated failures along this strip [similar to Sunset Road]. Drunken Monkey started with lunch and dinner but now only open at night with an Asian style menu, many Thai dishes plus a few other interesting ones such as Hainanese Chicken and Braised Pork Shanks with Chinese 5 spices and a duck egg. On the same strip is Jig U Jigu with cheap Javanese and Ton-Up Bar & Grill a stylish fit-out aimed at the bike set featuring hot stone dishes that you cook at the table.

The vegetarian scene was served by Clear Café returning to its original site on Jln.Hanoman, after it was re built, and Sayuri taking the space that once was the Ubud Jazz Café in Tebasaya. Sayari is full Vegan, with all the product being plant based. Another Vegetarian was the Green Key on Raya Pengosekan, where you create your own salads [or ‘pokes’].

The big news for Sanur was the re-emergence of our Cheap Eat find of 2016, DD Warung, at their new much improved site on Jln. Danau Poso. Their cuisine can only be called REAL Thai! Their star dishes: Kra Pao with fire, which is the perfect lunch, and the wonderful Yum Pla Duk Foo, a very common traditional Thai dish that is rarely found in Bali. Fresh water catfish [in Indonesia, ‘Lele’] is steamed then cooled. Just before serving the pieces of fish are dropped into a very hot wok, the result is that the fish explodes! The fish on the plate now looks as if it has been minced. As with all Thai dishes, balance is the key. The crumbly fish is topped with green mango salad, a perfect match. Warung Nagaya, Jln. Batur Sari, is a better than average Japanese at very reasonable prices. There are two Nagoya specialties, Tenmusu & Doteni. Tenmusu are rice balls [sushi rice] that are stuffed with a shrimp fritter [tempuri] and half wrapped in nori seaweed. Doteni are for the more adventurous, it is a rich dish with Hatcho miso incorporating ingredients like beef tendon, beef intestines and daikon radish. The meat is simmered for a long time, well balanced with the rich miso. Warung Little Bird on Danau Tamblingan is unusual, Javanese cuisine but all the customers are tourist and expats. On Danau Poso is 104 Bar & Grill, an Aussie operation among all the Dutch run cafes and bars. They offer Hamburgers [with beetroot of course] and a few English specials; Bangers & mash and Fish & chips. All is perfect food for drinkers. Between Sanur and Denpasar is an area that I call the Renon loop. Many popular luncheon spots for workers from the city and more and more expatriates are also now discovering the great value that exists in this area. New additions include Cengkih Jintens, specializing in Gourami fish, in soups, salads, grilled or deep fried. Daebak is Korean for those who love kim-chi, and Bulgogi as I do. Korean Fried Rice is Nasi Goreng with kim-chi. Warung Modus appears to serve the upper set, judging by the rows of expensive cars parked outside, the menu includes all the basic Indonesian dishes. Fig Tree Bakery saw a family of Australians bring their expertise to Bali. Pastries, pies, croissants and cakes are the specialty of the house. The pies are different from the norm, Chicken Breast in Black Pepper, Chunky Chicken in Mushroom Cream and Grandma’s Pie of minced chicken and egg. They even offer a Korean Pie with chilli and cheese. Hayam Wuruk is Denpasar’s coffee stretch. Many followed the opening of Bali Bakery, the turnover has been frequent but the sturdiest remain. Depresso is a strange name, it offers a range of coffees in the Indonesian style; doppio, ristretto, lungo and kopi tubruk? DSM learnt from some of the streets earlier failures and opened with air-conditioning. Interesting snacks include Coriander Meatballs and Turmeric Samosas. At the new Renon Plaza is Kou featuring a range of Dim Sum, steamed and deep-fried dumplings, steam buns, etc.

The successful Greek restaurant, Nostimo from Raya Petitenget, arrived in Ubud, creating yet another cheap eating option along Raya Pengosekan. A kofte dish [minced meat in sausage shapes] called Soutzoukaki won me over though their Mixed Platter of Greek grilled meats seems to be their most popular dish. The Alaya Hotel already had an exceptional restaurant serving traditional Balinese regional dishes but when they built an extension to the hotel they included a new up market Indonesian restaurant called Manisan. The name often caused confusion with the well established and famous Mamasan in Seminyak, though it has no connection with that at all.

common breast provided more taste, a light infusion with teriyaki sauce just right, with broccoli and carrots sprinkled with garlic chips. Great simple dishes!

Best New Cafe @ Cosmic Sanur

One of the best newcomers was The Cosmic Diner with one of Bali’s most imaginative fit-outs, one that includes an old style train carriage which has proved to be very popular for photo shoots [weddings, birthdays, etc]. Excellent great value Rice Bowls feature prominently on their menu. There are three of them, the Black Pepper Beef, shredded meat stir-fried in black pepper sauce topped with shavings of crisp onion, Pork Belly, double cooked in soy with a fried egg and sautéed corn kernels. Both are excellent but the Chicken version was perfect! The use of chicken thighs instead of the more

Best Value Restaurant @ Extrablatt

Along The ByPass, almost to Kuta, was Alkhajanah, an Arabian restaurant serving food that is best described as pure Bedouin, the meats served almost totally covered with rice, not just any rice but that wonderful light fl uffy scented Arabian rice. In Legian we welcomed back an old favourite, Extrablatt. It was once a very small popular warung opposite the old Rumah Manis Hotel but is now back as a sprawling garden restaurant, only 100 metres away. The good news is the menu has not changed and neither have the prices. Great Rouladen and Meat Loaf but for me the best is their Leberkase, finely minced corned beef, pork and bacon formed into a loaf and baked in the oven like bread. A thick slice is served with a fried egg on top with crisp German style fried potatoes and fried onion. As usual it is in Kerobokan where most of the big money was spent. At the L Hotel on Petitenget, English chef Ryan Clift [of Singapore’s Tippling Club] opened Grow at street level and Grow Up on the rooftop. The menu at Grow is very individual with carefully crafted dishes that amaze. Confit of Scallops with toasted corn, corn puree, basil jelly and curried popcorn. There were so many different ingredients yet the result; just one total taste. Not one thing overpowering the other, the measuring stick for great chefs. Scattered across the top of this dish were a combination of fresh and deep-fried basil leaves.

There were many other new places along Petitenget, the Smokehouse came and went. Moon Rabbit does dim sum, noodles and rice dishes. Ling Ling is Korean/Japanese. Frestro had the advantage of Mandiff Warokka consulting for their initial menu. The exotic dishes included Rose-infused Watermelon Salad, Orange Currant Scones and a Mediterranean Lamb Soup that uses shoulder of lamb with lentils, chickpeas, saffron, coriander and lime. Kiln replaced Café Petitenget on the old Tebu site. Closer to Raya Kerobokan was Shima [old Charley’s Bar] with a full house of Teppanyaki tables as well as a special area for traditional Shabu-Shabu. Shima combines a touch of theatre with eating, a good night’s entertainment. On Eat Street the main new one was Salazon, dry aged beef with almost all the menu using smoked produce, even the seafood. Along Raya Kerobokan was Bo & Bun offering interesting Vietnamese dishes, very traditional, and quite a few Thai ones as well. The biggie was the opening of Som Thai where the failed Republik 1945 once was. It was quite a gamble by the Sarong Group, a large space, fine dining Thai at the rear and street food plus late night entertainment at the front. They now have 4 restaurants within 2 km.

mains include Rougaille, a tomato and herb casserole of pork, chicken or vegetables with mango kutcha and coconut chutney. Canggu continues to host new openings on almost a weekly basis. At the famous Tugu Hotel is Ji. The old original Chinese Balinese restaurant has been extended to the street front and now serves mainly Japanese cuisine, plus many ‘healthy’ dishes such as Yellowtail fish with dragon fruit and shisho mushrooms. Pomelo is another one on the health kick with Pumpkin Burgers and an Acai Bowl. Ulekan bucks the trend from modern International cuisine and just offers the best of local ones. From Madura is Kare Domba with lamb, chilli and curry leaves. Although they do vary that rule a bit with their Rendang, totally traditional except for the use of beef cheeks [with cinnamon, clove and star anise], WOW! Daily early and mid morning breakfast seem to very popular in Canggu these days and Coffee ‘n’ Oven leads the way. Crisp sourdough bread with broccoli pesto, greens, roasted bacon strips, poached eggs and mushrooms. On Tanak Barak, Melbourne chef Geoff Lindsay [Saigon Street on Petitenget and Pearl & Dandelion restaurants in Melbourne] took a big gamble by opening a Salumeria. It offers cured and smoked meats, and a variety of cheeses, almost all of which have been sourced locally [Bali & Java]. Happy Chappy was already well established on Jln. Pantai Berawa but could not handle the weekend crowds who wished to dine in so they moved 100 metres down the road, larger premises and some parking.

Best Steakhouse @ Boy ‘N’ Cow

Directly opposite the MamaSan restaurant is the impressive Boy ‘N’ Cow, one of the new stars of 2017. They offer a variety of cuts of beef from different origins, all dry-aged in a large temperature controlled glassed room just inside the restaurant entrance. On two levels it is a most attractive fit out. And the quality of the food and service matches the place perfectly.

Best New Restaurant @ GROW

The most sensational dish for me at Grow was the Grouper. Perfectly pan fried, covered with quite a strong pea and green curry sauce with compressed celery and puffed rice. The complete dish is then encased in an emulsion [foam] fl avoured with Thai’s Tom Kha [coconut milk and galangal]. A feast of fl avour, an incredibly complex dish but, once again, perfectly balanced. Grow was our best new restaurant for 2017.

Already the new openings are lining up for 2018. A trendy burger shop, will open in Ubud, next door to one of the successes of 2016, Habitat. There will be a new Italian/ Australian beach front cafe at Sanur’s southern end. Just off Eat Street one more dry-aged beef restaurant that may just blow all the others away.

Along Batu Belig there were two worthy newcomers. Chris Salans of Mozaic fame, opened the 3rd SPICE, a range of small plates of contrasting tastes. At the other end of the road is Bali’s 1st Mauritian restaurant, Ti Moris, a combination of native African infl uenced by Chinese, French and Indian. The salads use smoked meats, fish and cheeses, Mauritian Creole

Steeler fan, paralyzed chasing monkey that stole his hat, flown to Malaysia for surgery

His loyalty to Steeler Nation sent Jeff “Swede” Swedenhjelm chasing after a monkey that had stolen his favorite Steelers cap, then spinning off a rooftop in Bali. Now, fellow Steelers fans have been a large part of the support that’s gotten him a flight to Malaysia for emergency spinal surgery, his daughter said Tuesday. Swedenhjelm, 40, grew up in Erie and moved to Destin, Fla., 17 years ago, then left to travel around the world in 2016. For about a year, he’s run a pleasure boat for tourists in the Indonesian island of Bali, said his daughter, Lyric Swedenhjelm, 21, who is attending school in Chicago. Last week, a monkey snatched his prized hat from his head and Swedenhjelm gave chase, ending up on a rooftop. He got the hat back, Lyric said, but he fell 33 feet from the roof and was left paralyzed from the chest down. “If you look at his Facebook, he’s got that hat in almost every picture,” his daughter said. “Steeler Nation is everywhere, but you can’t easily get another one in Bali, so he wasn’t just going to let it go.” Lyric said funds raised online helped pay for her father to be flown from Bali to Kuala Lumpur, where there were more options for his treatment. Many comments mentioned their shared support for Swedenhjelm’s beloved Steelers. The spinal injury also weakened Swedenhjelm’s lungs to a point that he developed pneumonia and required assistance breathing. He was scheduled for surgery to replace two vertebrae late Tuesday night, Eastern U.S. time, which should help doctors further evaluate the extent of the damage, Lyric said. “He’s a really optimistic person, and he’s really grateful for the mountains people moved to get him there,” she said. “He’s being really strong, and that’s helping the rest of us to be strong.” On Facebook, Lyric shared a video from Scott Wells, a friend of her father’s who flew in from Hawaii after the accident. The video showed Swedenhjelm, confined to a stretcher but awake and smiling, as he was transferred from an ambulance to the airplane that would take him to Malaysia. In an earlier video from a hospital bed, Jeff Swedenhjelm thanked everyone who had donated or sent support, especially fellow Steelers fans. “I was chasing that damn hat because I know it’s the greatest club on Earth,” he said, a Terrible Towel hanging behind his head. “I’m representing you guys, and I hope you’re representing me.” “I’m going to come back stronger, bigger and badder,” he said. “Once I get back on my feet, I’m going to do something major. ... We’ll have a huge party.” Lyric said her father’s pneumonia had worsened to the point that doctors at the new hospital would not let him off his breathing apparatus to speak. Wells and hospital staff were sending updates to Lyric and her mother, who remained in the United States to direct all the funding toward Jeff’s treatment and rehab, but those updates were usually happening in the middle of the night. “When I’d be sleeping, it’s their business hours over there,” she said. “I’m getting a few hours here and there.” A GoFundMe page set up to “ Help Swede Walk Again “ had raised $73,000 of its $100,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon. The page description said the cheapest medevac flight to surgery was $67,000; further proceeds will go toward his medical bills and rehab. [TribLive.com December 26, 2017] U.S. man recaptured after week on run in Bali Authorities have recaptured an American man who escaped from an overcrowded and understaffed prison on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, police said Sunday. Christian Beasley, 32, is believed to have escaped during heavy rain last Monday from the Kerobokan penitentiary in Bali’s provincial capital, Denpasar, by sawing through a ceiling and then climbing over a 20-foot-high wall behind the prison. The head of the prison, Tonny Nainggolan, said earlier that another American inmate, Paul Anthony Hoffman, 57, who has been serving a 20-month sentence since July for robbery, was captured while trying to escape along with Beasley. Beasley was arrested in August at a post office in Bali’s Kuta tourist area while allegedly trying to pick up a package containing 5.7 grams of hashish. He stood trial and the verdict was due last Tuesday, a day after his escape. Bali police detective Made Pramestia said Beasley had reached the neighboring tourist island of Lombok by boat on the day of his escape. Pramestia said Beasley was recaptured on Saturday in an alley near a beach on Lombok after a five-day manhunt. An investigation was underway to determine if prison guards were involved in the escape, said Surung Pasaribu of the local office of the Law and Human Rights Ministry. He also said there is a shortage of guards at the prison, which was built to accommodate about 300 people but has nearly 1,600 inmates. It was the second escape from the prison since June, when four foreign inmates escaped through a drainage tunnel. Two of them, Bulgarian Dimitar Nikolov Iliev and Indian Sayed Mohammed Said, were recaptured in East Timor days later and were returned to Bali. The two others, Shaun Edward Davidson of Australia and Tee Koko King bin Tee Kim Sai of Malaysia, are still at large. Jailbreaks are common in Indonesia, where prisons are overcrowded with people convicted of drug crimes as part of the government’s anti-drug crusade. [CBS News December 18, 2017] Dustin Martin left ‘shattered’ after dad Shane rejected entry into Bali for Christmas holiday Martin was stopped by customs officers in Indonesia earlier this month and alleges Australian government interference, suggesting they requested that he be refused entry. Martin was deported from Australia because of alleged links to an outlaw motorcycle gang, but Home Affairs minister Peter Dutton conceded he made a legal error and gave Martin the right to reapply for a visa. “I was so confused, I’ve been to Bali before, even after my visa was cancelled and had no problems,” Shane told the Herald Sun. He said that airport officials told him “I’m sorry, we’ve been told by (the) Australian Government not to let you in.” “It’s Australia, they kept saying and they were embarrassed and apologetic.” Shane’s lawyers reportedly got in touch with the Australian government before flying to Bali and were advised to change their itinerary from flying through Sydney to flying through Singapore. Martin did so but was still rejected when he arrived at Denpasar Airport. “We had Christmas in Bali planned for a while - way before the minister’s decision was overturned - and it was gonna be really special for my family to be all together,” Dustin told the Herald Sun. “But dad got to Bali and was told the Australian authorities now requested he’s not allowed in. “I was just shattered and really confused. Why would they stop him from going to Bali now? We were there a year ago and nothing changed apart from dad winning his case. “I’ve had a good year on the footy field with the club’s success and everything. I’m a really proud Australian and I love this country but this just isn’t a fair go.” The family is instead spending Christmas in Auckland, New Zealand. [Fox Sports December 24, 2017] Denpasar Customs destroys IDR3.6 billion worth of confiscated items Denpasar Customs is destroying thousands of items that their office confiscated over the past couple years, worth about IDR3.6 billion (US$265,671) this week. Who needs an annual end-of-year holiday party when your office gets to rally to burn and grind up a bunch of glass bottles, weapons, and other miscellaneous stuff? The destruction, will be done by burning, grinding, and cutting at the Suwung landfill. A ceremony celebrating the huge haul of stuff that’s getting wrecked was held at the Denpasar Customs and Excise Supervisory and Service Office on Jl. Tukad Badung on Wednesday. Items to be destroyed include about three million ‘illegal’ cigarettes, 447 bottles of alcoholic drinks, airsoft guns, swords, contraceptives, sex toys, and other goods that had been imported illegally or without proper permit. While sex toys are not formally prohibited, Indonesia’s vaguely worded anti-pornography law allows some loose interpretation, whereby dildos and other items could be labeled at pornographic. Denpasar Customs director, Abdul Kharis said all these items were uncovered coming in to Bali through the Renon Post Office and Benoa Port. Items confiscated from people traveling through Ngurah Rai are handled by the airport’s own customs division. “Most of this stuff is from East Java. When we work, we do not know exactly whether Bali is the final destination or just a point of transit,” Kharis said, as quoted by Merdeka. Kharis added that the items getting destroyed this week were confiscated by Denpasar Customs between 2015 and 2017. [Coconuts Bali December 21, 2017] Indonesia’s early warning tsunami buoys network don’t work One of the undesired outcomes from the 6.9 Richter earthquake that struck off West Java in Indonesia just before midnight on Friday, December 15, 2017, was the discovery that 22 early warning tsunami buoys deployed across the archipelago don’t work. Put in place after the cataclysmic earthquake and tsunami on Boxing Day 2004 that killed an estimated 250,000 people across South and Southeast Asia, the early warning system was funded by the Governments of Germany, Malaysia and the USA. The buoys, according to Kompas.com, without exception have fallen into disrepair and no longer work. Observers claim the buoys are not being property maintained and used by fishermen as anchoring buoys for their boats. Even more embarrassing to the Indonesian government, the spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, revealed that the 22 buoys that form the front line of a Tsunami Early Warning Systems have been non-operational since 2012. Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta, Sutopo said that working buoys would enable Indonesian climatologists and forecasters to advise the public of the threat of an approaching tsunami. Apparently the tsunami warning issued after the earthquake on Friday, December 15, 2017, was done manually by forecasters and based entirely on forecast modeling without the aid of readouts from the buoys. Similarly, the tsunami warning was withdrawn by forecasters two hours after it was issued when it was deemed the threat had passed. Stating the obvious, Sutopo said: “In the future, we need to rebuild the buoy warning system because the people of Indonesia are at great risk of tsunamis. [www.balidiscovery.com December 17, 2017]

Indonesia lifts Bali’s alert status The government has lifted the alert status on Bali, suggesting activity on Mount Agung might only affect those within a 10-kilometer radius from the crater. Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung said on Friday that the alert status had unfortunately triggered foreign countries to issue travel advisories. “The President has decided to revoke the alert status. Bali is now ready to welcome tourists again,” he said after a limited Cabinet meeting led by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in Denpasar. Among countries that issued travel advisories, China banned its citizens from traveling to Bali from Nov 27 to Jan 4. The travel advisories reportedly dealt a severe blow to the island’s tourist industry. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the number of tourist arrivals to Bali had gradually recovered to 12,300 visitors per day, recently. The number had plunged to as low as 2,000 visitors per day after Mt. Agung erupted on Nov. 29. On normal days, the average number of visitors is 15,000. “Currently, the situation is conducive and stable,” he said. [The Jakarta Post December 23, 2017] Bali’s Mt Agung erupts for 10 minutes The Mount Agung volcano on the Indonesian island of Bali has erupted for about 10 minutes, the country’s disaster management agency says. Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the volcano early on Sunday belched a thick plume of grey smoke up to 2500 metres into the sky which was then blown northeast. White smoke was seen billowing from the crater after the eruption. Authorities raised the warning alert to the highest level on November 27 and ordered the evacuation of nearly 100,000 people. Nugroho said international airports on the resort islands Bali and Lombok were operating normally. The 3031-metre Mount Agung last erupted for a period of almost a year in 1963 and 1964, leaving about 1200 people dead. Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic upheavals and volcanic eruptions. [Perth Now December 24, 2017] Gay crackdown continues in Indonesia despite court ruling Activists in Indonesia are warily celebrating the Constitutional Court’s narrow rejection last week of a conservative group’s petition to ban gay and extramarital sex. The surprising 5-4 verdict in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation came during a long anti-LGBT crackdown that began in January 2016. The ruling, while welcomed by the LGBT community, does not end their battle for acceptance. The Constitutional Court’s decision focused more on the fact that it was the wrong venue to consider such a ban than on the human rights implications. “I am relieved and feel so happy,” said Lini Zurlia, a gay rights activist in Jakarta after the Constitutional Court’s decision. “But I’m still worried about the next process at the legislative level,” she said. Parliament is expected to consider the ban. The same day the Constitutional Court ruled, a North Jakarta court sentenced eight gay men to more than two years in prison for taking part in a gay sex party at a sauna, which was recently shut down on the grounds it was the site of sex work. Analysts say the sentences are further evidence of how criminalization continues to affect Indonesia’s LGBT population. [The Voice of America News December 19, 2017] Ubud uses tourism downturn to sort out its traffic problems Travel.detik.com reports that the Regency of Gianyar in Bali is using the temporary downturn in tourist visitors to the Island of Bali to address long-standing problems of traffic congestion. Changes in traffic rules have been tested by police since Monday, December 17, 2017. In an announcement by the Traffic Service for Gianyar Regency, the changes will take effect from mid-December include the prohibition of buses carrying more than 25 passenger seats from entering Ubud. Meanwhile, medium-sized buses of less than 25-passenger seats will only be allowed to enter the central parking areas of Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest and the Puri Dalem Puri. Small busses with less than 15 passenger seats are only allowed to enter Ubud to embark and disembark passengers. The Regency official in charge of traffic, Wayan Arthana, said: “Parking is prohibited on roads and sidewalks in Ubud and surrounding areas for all types of vehicles, including motorcycles, cars and delivery vehicles. Exceptions are granted for embarking or disembarking passengers. Goods can be loaded or unloaded at times and places designated under the new rules.” Traffic congestion is a common complaint among visitors to Ubud. Officials hope the new traffic rules will eliminate traffic jams when eventually the tourists return in full force in the near future. [www.balidiscovery.com December 17, 2017]
