Update Lamak

opened in Ubud [Monkey Forest Road] on Valentine’s Day 2002. it joined Ary’s Warung [where Chris Salans was then presiding in the kitchen] and the recently opened TeraZo as the only top level quality dining options outside of the more expensive five star hotels in the Ubud area. In the intervening almost 18 years Ubud has seen many quality restaurants open whilst most of Ubud’s tourist increase has been from the suburban budget background.

is a perfect example. Easy on the eye and a great taste [pictured], in fact it is quite a knockout. A layer of crab meat [Kalimantan crab] is topped with chunks of pomelo on top coconut, thin cucumber strips, mint and an Asian style dressing [mint oil, lime juice and fish sauce], also added at the table. …Fantastic!

Mauri

is Italian on Jln. Petitenget.A small intimate restaurant it also offers a chef’s table setting for 5 persons. Upstairs is just for small snacks. Chef Mauricio was originally at the Bulgari and later at Ubud’s Ritz Carlton before branching out on his own, serving traditional dishes from the south. Their Beef Cheek Tortelli is a great example of tradition with a twist

Koral is now finally open [dinners only], it is an amazing

So places that provide what I call ‘comfort food’ have boomed and any increase in the fine dining options resulted in a vast drop in their business as it has to be shared around, and now with the increased number of quality restaurants, a few of which are in serious trouble. This has resulted in both TeraZo and Ary’s joining many other once great restaurants in restaurant heaven. Only Lamak has survived. Why? Because they have kept up with the demands of today’s dining, and now offer a range of light and healthy options. A cuisine that I would have to call Modern International, but with an Asian touch. The new menu at Lamak for this high season is quite amazing with an added touch of a sprinkling of edible flowers on many of the dishes. The Pomelo Crab

underwater seafood restaurant. It is found at one of this year’s new 5 star luxury resorts, the Apurva Kempinsky, north west of Nusa Dua. You can watch fish swim by through the adjoining large glass windows as you feast on their siblings. The windows take up entire walls so you do really feel as if you are underwater, effectively you are dining in an aquarium. Feature dishes include the Lump Blue Crab Salad with Granny Smith apples, crisp jicama, and aromatic lemon, basil, and ginger; and the interesting Prawn & Lime, which combines stuffed jumbo prawns with dabu-dabu salsa, potato gnocci and tomato and chili sauce. In addition to the à la carte menu, Koral offers a four-course degustation menu featuring seasonal ingredients with sommelier-selected wine pairings.

to start, full of vegetables and your choice of chicken or lamb in a very spicy broth into which you dip the great fire-baked bread, or for the health conscious there is the thick lentil soup Shorbat Adas. The Shakiya is the star of the mains, a Lamb Shank cooked in yoghurt. Lamb Mandi is a dish from Yemen, combining rice with meat. A visit is an interesting and tasty experience.

Sate Babi Bawah Pohon is now found on Jln. Dewi Sri, Legian. Forever popular with locals [including the players from Bali United] it offers delicious satays at cheap prices. Great street food! There is a full range of other dishes but it is the satays that they come for. Tempted is on Jln. Lebak Sari, Petitenget. They tempt

you with a range of Italian classics. Such as Polpette al sugo, a famous family dish from Sicily, large meat balls stuffed with a nut of mozzarella in a thick tomato broth. Fritto Misto alla Romana is a plate of deep-fried prawns and squid with pumpkin, sage and onions and a lemon mayonnaise. Their Arancini are yellow rice balls stuffed with a combination of beef and cheese. Many pasta offerings, top of the range is the Salmon Pappardelle with Caviar [red]. For mains an Italian version of Lemon Chicken, Pollo al Limone or Salmone Grigliato alla Livornese, grilled salmon topped with olives and a parsley lemon puree. The Pizzas include a special Regina Maria Jose, topped with a puree of artichoke, olives and parma ham.

Shisha Café has always been a popular spot. Years ago it moved to Jln. Sunset from its original Legian location, but its customers have followed in droves. Middle Eastern cuisine accompanies the shisha pipes. Maraq is the traditional soup

Restaurant Review A Variety of Japanese Tenkai is a small Japanese house in the gardens of the than during the meal, whilst the soup is sipped throughout Padma Hotel in Legian. It offers quite a variety fo different the meal. Japanese cuisines and styles on different nights. The alternate Teppanyaki Toki set menu offers a Green Salad followed by Australian meats [Black Angus Sirloin beef and Lamb loin], King Prawns, Tuna, White Fish, vegetables, steamed or fried rice, Miso soup and pickles You can tailor your meal by adding a side of any of the available component parts, and there is also a special cheaper menu for children

The restaurant is open for dinner only and there is a Japanese Buffet dinner [pictured] on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays whilst the a la carte menus is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. On these nights there is also a full original Teppanyaki table but this requires a previous bookings for either a 6.00 or 8,00 p.m. start. Tenkai is one of the few Japanese restaurants in Bali with a Japanese chef in charge, Masahiko Morikawa. There are many set menus, by far the best value particularly for anyone experiencing these cuisines for the first time. For the Teppanyaki Table you select either the Hakucho or Toki menus both of which combine meats and seafood. Both have 11 component parts to the menu, the Hakucho includes Seafood Salad, Australian Tajima Wagyu Sirloin beef 4.5 marbling, Bamboo Lobster, Chicken Breast, Tasmanian Salmon, Tuna, Scallop and assorted vegetables, steamed or fried rice, Miso soup and pickles. As with many Asian cuisines if you have fried rice it is served at the completion of the meal as a final course, rather

The a la carte menu offers many choices but there is also a special Tenkai set menu that includes the appetizer and sashimi of the day followed by either Yakimono [Wagyu from OZ] or Mushimono [steamed fish with Ponzu sauce, a tangy citrus and soy-based sauce], a choice of grilled eel fried rice or one of three sushi. Finish with green tea ice cream.

The menu offers many unique Japanese dishes but the stand out for me was the Gyutan Yawaraka Ni, Beef Tongue, slow cooked in soy and ginger. Miso soup with salmon head and vegetables is a Japanese favourite as is the Pork Belly with yuzu miso sauce. A variety of Beef [Wagyu and Angus] dishes are also available as are many seafood options. Needless to say there is a range of sushi options including a few specials from the chef such as the one I like very much, a roll with grilled eel. Rice Bowls are a great snack or small meal, often that is all that you want. Ten Jyu is prawn and vegetable tempura on rice, Una Jyu is grilled eel, Oyako Jyu is my pick, poached chicken thigh [more taste than breast meat] and egg. The noodle dishes include both Soba and Udon, with hot and cold options. All in all a very varied menu, highlighting fresh quality ingredients in the best Japanese tradition. To visit Tenkai is to visit Japan, without the air fare.

The Frugal Balinist * Coconut’s multiple uses An Indonesian proverb says “There are as many uses for the coconut as there are days in the year.” But even though nearly all parts of a coconut tree - from the leaves to the roots - hold economic value, actual raw coconuts sell at below market prices. It’s wiser to produce coconut milk, coconut oil, palm sugar and grated coconut which are all popular consumer goods. First use a parutan (grater) for producing coconut meat. After adding hot water, massage the coconut meat to release its milk, then use a cheese cloth to separate the liquid (milk) from the meat remnants. (What’s left of the coconut meat can be used for animal feed.) The milk is then boiled and cooled. The cream floats to the top over the coconut oil.

Let it cool before separating the oil and the cream. In addition to these food products, flowers, brooms and mats can be made out of the leaves. Coconut husks (copra) can also be produced from coconut shells. Bags, baskets, placemats and tissue boxes made from coconut husks are sold (at inflated prices) at Ubud Market. Husks can also be used as kindling for fire. The warm golden color of the Ata grass basketry develops naturally from slow smoking over a fire of coconut husks soaked in honey. Use the leaves for canang (offerings), tamas (woven offering trays) and serabut (spongy skin) for brooms, mats and for planting orchids. Lidi (leaf spines) are used for making dish holders. Coconut wood is known for its beauty and hardness. Warning: Because of scorpions, take care collecting coconuts. Look closely first.

English and who are enthusiastic about their treatments. If a therapist has bad acne and is giving facial treatments, why are they not taking better care of their own health and using products to improve their appearance? Also, does the spa adhere to a minimum standard of service? For a number of years there were no set standards for spas, but now thanks to the Bali Spa Wellness Association, steps have been taken to set standards and to work with the national government to organize meaningful training programs. The Jamu Spa School has also helped create new standards for therapists. Most good quality spas now offer training for their staff with certification upon completion. *Gay staff, who are professional, charming and highly skilled, is usually a good sign that it’s a place where you can feel safe. *Spas such as Prana are mostly for businessmen and male tourists. *If you see all the girls in a common area presenting themselves, you are not in a traditional spa. These masseuse, who are not known for their massage skills or healing practices in the strict senses of those words, offer spa treatments in Kuta for as little as Rp65,000 for one-hour whole body massage – ridiculously cheap! * Travel hacks Before you step on the plane to Bali, make sure you’re covered. SafetyWing, costing only US$37 every 4 weeks, is the world’s first travel medical insurance developed to meet the needs of entrepreneurs and remote workers traveling or living abroad. *Best time to travel to Bali is between April and June when the weather is dry and warm. The dry season continues from July to September. *Virgin Australia now offers introductory direct one-way airfares from $299 or return tickets from $499 from Melbourne to Bali. (Book the return fares instead of the more expensive one-way flights.)

Includes free 23 kg of checked baggage per person. These fares beat by far the average prices from Australia to Bali which run anywhere around $700, with a good deal coming in at $580. *Return fares for Citilink’s Perth to Bali flights start at about A$435 but are shown as US dollars on the website so passengers must be careful when booking. *Take advantage of unbelievably low world-wide airfares offered on Twitter accounts: https://twitter.com/theflightdeal; https:// twitter.com/SecretFlying; https://twitter.com/airfarewatchdog; https://twitter.com/AirfareSpot. Set up alerts for new flight deals, but be aware that these super bargains may be timesensitive. You can do the same thing on each of their websites by entering the URLs above into the Google search field. * Moneysavers 120 free scholarly academic books on Indonesia in English and Dutch, on subjects from the abstruse to the general, including language, history, ethnology, archaeology, culture, music, arts in every region of Indonesia: https://www.oapen. org. *GoJek is an amazingly cheap way to get around on motorbikes and also for ordering food. *Be careful with Airbnb if your rental is not legal; the authorities check Airbnb closely and sometimes pretend to be renters. *To find out if you have unclaimed assets waiting for you, go to website MissingMoney.com which has unclaimed asset listings from 41 U.S. states totaling billions of dollars. *Big trouble coming if we don’t reduce our carbon footprint in simple ways that will also save money. Avoid plastic bottles, waste less food, eat less meat, switch to more efficient light bulbs, turn off unused lights, take fewer plane rides and drive fewer miles by consolidating trips or taking public transport. Dispense with deodorants, perfumes and soap that contain petroleum-based chemicals which emit harmful pollution at levels comparable to cars and trucks. (Use Lux soap and Dove deodorants, soap and shampoo.) *Proficiency in Indonesian will open many doors and save immeasurable amounts of time and money in all corners of the country. *”Spend on others, and I will spend on you.” Prophet Mohammed.

Bali For Kids

The gift and giving season is fast approaching. Last month, I featured organizations around Bali that are doing great work for Balinese children. (Please go back and read this column in the 6 November issue if you want to get “gifts that give” this holiday season.) This month, I’ll look at how you can get ready for the gift exchange time with your own kids. Here’s a short list of some good places to get fun and well-received gifts for your kids. **************************************************************** The Bali Buda stores (http://www.balibuda.com) have some great gift ideas for kids, starting with pencils that have seeds embedded in them, so they can plant them once they’ve used up the pencil part and watch a real plant grow! The chain of healthy food, supplements and homewares stores has up-cycled and recycled notebooks for kids that are really cute. A pad of (recycled) paper and a pencil makes a simple, inexpensive gift to get those young minds humming with ideas and drawing. Combine with their ginger spice or peanut butter cookies, and you have a fun & yummy playtime. Bali Buda has shops in Ubud, Kerobokan, Bukit, Batubulan and Sanur. Shops are open from 7 am to 10 pm. You can contact them on their main number (0361) 299 467 from 9 am to 5 pm weekdays or visit their website for store directions.

******************************************************************* IKEA has come to Indonesia! Well, to the Jakarta area. However, you can order online and have anything shipped to Bali. (Of course, you still have to assemble furniture yourself, but that’s IKEA’s trademark to keep their prices low.) Browse IKEA’s online catalog for kids (https://www. ikea.co.id/en/rooms/children-ikea) and get lots of ideas for toys, gifts, furniture, bedding, lighting, storage and more. My daughter still uses the Kalas brightly colored plastic bowls, plates and cutlery that she has used since she was a small child. From setting up a baby’s room or a teen’s study den, IKEA has everything you need online and just a few clicks away.

******************************************************************* Bali ArteMedia is a great art supply store, with a good range of paints, drawing and colored pencils, as well as canvas and paper. The stores stock palettes and easels, markers, acrylic paints, oils, spray paints, drawing pencils, pretty much everything you need to create art. Best of all, they have four outlets around Bali: Canggu (Jl. Pantai Berawa No. 8, Tibubeneng), Denpasar (Jl. Imam Bonjol No. 434, Pemecutan Klod), Sanur (Jl. Danau Buyan N. 26A, Sanur), and Jimbaran (Jl. Uluwatu II No. 9X, JImbaran). Different stores have different hours, but generally about 9 am to 7 pm weekdays. The stores also hold art exhibitions and classes for both kids and grownups. Kids can learn everything from drawing and painting, to making manga comics, ceramics and craft classes. They don’t seem to have a website, but you can contact them through their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/bali.artemedia).

Local sustainable eco-clothing company Goddess on the Go (https://www.goddessonthego.com.au) is launching a children’s line soon. Goddess makes figure-flattering clothing in a range of bright and dark colors that flow and moves with you, are comfortable to wear, easy-care and made from sustainable materials. Their main store is on Jl. Raya Pengosekan in Ubud. Call them on +62 361 976 084 or email them at talk2us@goddessonthego.com.au. Watch this space for developments. ****************************************************************** And hey, the best gift you can give your child is your time. So leave that mobile phone at home or turn it off, grab your kids and head for a beach, waterpark or adventure course. Spend a day with them doing something they enjoy. Read past columns for ideas about what you can do as a family or with your kids. Best. Gift. Ever. Here’s one idea for a fun family pre-holiday adventure: family camping just one hour from Seminyak. This trip is billed as an easy-paced, action-packed weekend with hikes, campfires, river adventures, a trip to the Sacred Monkey Forest and a Spiritual Water Cleansing Ceremony. The trip runs 6th – 8th December and is run by Bali Camping Community. The cost is IDR 3 million per twoperson tent. This includes everything except the transport to get to the campsite. Contact them on +62 819 3307 9922 or check their Facebook page: (https://www.facebook.com/ BaliCampingCommunity)

Nyoman Jendra

Bali is full of art and a wonderland for art-lovers. But it can be harder to find art that is suitable for kids and that they like. One art shop in Nyuh Kuning specializes in paintings for younger art lovers. Painter Nyoman Jendra paints commissions for a German children’s magazine and then recreates the illustrations as paintings in his studio. My daughter loves them and I bought her two a few years ago. They still hang in her bedroom even though she’s a teenager. She also loves her small butterfly pictures that we got there as well. Nyoman can take special orders as well. His studio is on Jalan Raya Nyuh Kuning in Pengosekan near Ubud (just before the Suarti Boutique Village and Cilantro as you head towards Nyuh Kuning village, on the left side.) Nyoman’s email is nyoman_jen@ hotmail.com. Main hours are about 10 am – 6 pm daily, but vary with ceremony days.

Bali Camping Community

This column is published monthly. If you have any events or activities, anywhere in Bali, for kids or teens, that you would like publicized, please email all relevant details (time, date, description, location) to LizinBali@gmail.com.

At Home in Bali

Design ideas and inspiration for tropical living

What’s Under The Tree This Year? This issue marks the 1st anniversary of the At Home in Bali column. What an interesting year it has been! We’ve given ideas on refreshing short-lease rentals and speedy home makeovers on a budget. We’ve taken a look at wall treatments, table dressings, casual seating and creating gallery walls. And we’ve explored decluttering, making design decisions with integrity, and bringing wellbeing into the home. Gratitude to the architects, resort owners and renovation addicts who have generously shared their tips, tricks and contacts over the year — what gifts their insights have been!

shoulders on a chilly evening. They would make wonderful wall hangings too, complemented by an elaborately carved wood ikat hanger.

December is the gifting month – a tradition that has spread across the world, no longer defined by faith. So we thought we’d close our first year by asking the year’s wonderful contributors to At Home in Bali what’s on their Christmas wish list. All things round Our inaugural column in November 2018 was an interview with architect/interior designer Alejandra Cisneros, author of Seen Unseen: Embracing Natural Design in Bali, who shared her “little design survival kit to make your beautiful life on Bali even more beautiful.” Who better to ask first what she’d like to find under the tree. “Santa came early while I was finishing up the Tiny Tall House and brought a bunch of goodies that I’m just crazy about,” Alej enthuses. “Water hyacinth is the new rage! Santa brought me not one but two round water hyacinth area rugs – I’m into all things round lately, so Santa got it right. Santa brought me two super-comfortable water hyacinth pouffes as well. A word of caution though, these are really meant for indoors.”

Cushions and throws Decorative items appear high up on Kano Sari creator Karen’s wish list – specifically cushions from Cloth on Jalan Raya Andong. “Their beautiful hand-woven, handprinted and hand-embellished cushions and throws are an instant pick-me-up for bedroom or lounge,” says Karen, who shared her tips on shopping for homewares and lifestyle treasures in October. Karen likes to coordinate pieces to create a look that is fresh and individual, both for her home and for her boutique hotel. On the subject of instant pick-me-ups for the home, the divine new interiors boutique Tao Collection on Jalan Raya Sanggingan, hand-stitched from old saris in stunning colour combinations would make welcome gifts. Just imagine the impact on a room when these Indian jewels are draped over a sofa or bed…. or wrapped around your

Opulent detail Not surprisingly, fabric also features on the wish list of décor obsessive and renovation addict, Janet Molloy. Back in February, she shared tips on lifting lack-lustre places into luscious homes, drawing on her experience of designing homes, boutiques and restaurants island-wide. Remember the chandelier gracing the upstairs section of Café Havana? On a recent trip to Lucca in Italy she fell in love with a Murano glass floral chandelier in the walled city’s famed antiques market. She’s now in pursuit of of a plush furnishing fabric from Alta Moda to complement her Venetian treasure. “My heart is beating at the thought of seeing them together.” Seems like a match made in heaven! From chandeliers to cleaning Just imagine the task of cleaning those delicate glass orbs! It’s a practical issue that might appeal to Birgit, the architect sound healer behind the fabulous Balila Beach Resort in Amed. In June she shared her thoughts on creating a home with integrity; six months later that same preoccupation with principled living is evident in her own Christmas list. “I try now to get more and more zero waste products such as make-up remover or face washing sponge. So I’ll be happy to find in my Christmas stocking a natural zero waste soap block from IbuBumi.” There are lots of gift ideas on their website, from bamboo straws and beeswax bunkus bags to shampoo and body bars … and Shampooch dog shampoo bars. Birgit admits to yearning for “a nice big fridge – Electrolux, with two doors and a big freezer” …. somewhere to store her plentiful garden produce. Gifts for the garden What would long-term Bali Advertiser contributor Ibu Cat, whose stealth home makeover put her in the At Home spotlight in last December’s column, like to find wrapped up under the festive tree? It will come as no surprise to fans of her Greenspeak column that her thoughts immediately turned to the outdoors. “Christmas always comes after a long dry season, so gardens are important… taking out the rotting tomato plants and putting in greens. I am always happy to receive gardening gloves, plant

markers and good quality hand tools.” This passionate gardener is still using secateurs brought to Bali with her from Singapore 25 years ago. Much as she’d love to rely only on locally produced tools, they don’t have the strength and lasting power of her favourite, Lee Valley in Canada. Mine is not the only garden to benefit from Cat’s greenfingered generosity….Heliconia, Antigonon, Markisa among them. So I hope Santa is listening. Gifts that help an entire community “What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.” Dr Seuss, through the character of the Grinch, reminds us that Christmas is a time of giving and sharing with those around us – not just those at the centre of our lives, or the periphery, but people we have never met, those who are not so fortunate. Let the final words be from Daniel Elber, Bali’s ‘walking angel’ whose tireless efforts and social enterprise initiatives continue to create extraordinary change for Bali’s poorest communities. “My wishes for Christmas is that a growing number of Bali Advertiser readers are purchasing for Christmas presents the wonderful products from Muntigunung, be they hammocks, cashews, rosella items or any other products. By doing so, you not only create joy and happiness for the gift recipients, but also for the women producing each item.” As Daniel said in the March article on Muntigunung hammocks, with every purchase “you are creating work for someone who previously may have never worked, never had water, was never registered, or had to beg for a living.” Isn’t that a compelling reason for give Muntigunung gifts? Local News Japanese expat in Bali falls from 2nd floor of apartment and breaks neck during brutal robbery Radar Bali reports severe injuries were suffered by a Japanese female national, Mika Hasegawa, possibly inflicted in the course of a home robbery. Hasegawa (38) was robbed at her place of residence, Apartment #8, Liem House Apartment, on Jalan Pura Merta Sari IV, Pemogan, Denpasar Selatan on Monday, November 25, 2019, at around 8:00 am. Police report that a robber or robbers beat, choked, and then threw the woman from the second floor of the apartment building into an adjacent open lot. Nyoman Wirajaya of the South Denpasar Police Precinct said: “We don’t know the chronology of the incident yet. What’s clear is that a Japanese fell from the second floor. She said a man was following her.” Police are unable to conduct a thorough interview of the woman who remains warded at the BIMC Hospital. Hasegawa has reportedly suffered a broken neck in the course of the robbery, inhibiting her ability to speak with police. The woman was discovered by a guard of the apartment building who heard her calls of help as he arrived at 8:00 am to report to work and then discovered the woman lying in the vacant lot. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the apartment building as their investigation continues. [balidiscovery.com November 26, 2019] Peaceful beach area in Bali marred by violence Police in Bali are investigating an unusually vicious knife attack on a Spanish female tourist that took place of the parking area of Padang-Padang Beach at Uluwatu on Thursday, November 21, 2019, at 7:20 pm. According to Radar Bali, Rossie Pie Leal (40) and a traveling companion, Azul Aine Martinez Jacomet, were walking from the beach to the parking area where they had parked a motorcycle. The pair told the police that a man riding a motorcycle approached the couple and tried to snatch a bag from the woman’s shoulder. Leal reportedly resisted the theft while her companion tried to summon help. In the ensuing struggle, the thief produced a small sword (parang) that he used to viciously attack the woman, slashing her in the left shoulder, left elbow, right elbow, left hand, back, and waist. Leaving the woman badly wounded and bleeding, the thief escaped with the woman’s bag containing an iPhone X, cash, and credit cards. Police have interviewed the victims and bystanders, and are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area while an intensive manhunt is underway for the attacker. [balidiscovery.com November 26, 2019] Indonesia trials gift of chicks to wean children off of smartphones Officials in one Indonesian city have hatched a plan to wean children off smartphones-by giving them their own fluffy chicks to raise. Around 2,000 four-day-old chicks will be handed out to pupils at elementary and junior high schools in Bandung in the coming weeks in an attempt to distract them from their gadgets. The children must feed their new pets before and after school and can keep them at home or on school premises if they do not have space in their backyard. Authorities in the city, around 150 km (95 miles) southeast of the capital Jakarta, have dubbed the unusual project “chickenisation”. At a ribbon - cutting held on Thursday, a dozen chicks in cages were distributed with a sign that read: “Please take good care of me”. “There is an aspect of discipline here,” said Bandung’s mayor Oded Muhammad Danial. But the project isn’t just about curbing school kids’ phone habits, he said – it is also part of a national plan to broaden pupils’ education launched by President Joko Widodo. Danial first announced the chick project last month but said the city needed time to sort out logistics with local chicken farms. Mother Yayah Ratnasari was sold on the chicks-not-smartphones plan, and even expressed hopes it might encourage her son to become a poultry farmer. “It’s more beneficial for them to take care of chicks than play with smartphones,” she said. But her teenage son Rabil was less enthused. “It’s more interesting playing with a smartphone,” he said. [scmp.com November 22, 2019]

18 How a wife’s birthday surprise turned into a nightmare A surprise trip to Bali for a woman’s birthday has turned into a nightmare for a NSW couple. Linda Peterson and her husband Michael, a former air force technician, were on a getaway for her birthday when Mr Peterson was arrested after landing on the tourist island on Friday, Nine News reports. Mr Peterson, from the Hunter Region, was found with Dexamfetamine while going through customs and could face 20 years’ jail due to the country’s strict drug laws. Dexamfetamine is used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. The 47-year-old remains behind bars. On Monday, his legal team and wife visited him in jail. He told 7News he booked the trip as a surprise for his wife. “I just didn’t give it (bringing the medication) a thought,” he said. “Because I’ve travelled with defence as well, taking that drug, I didn’t think anything of it.” Mr Peterson said he needs the medication to counter extreme fatigue as a result of his work in the air force. But authorities are questioning why he has 87 tablets despite staying in Bali for four days. He also doesn’t have a prescription with him. The Government’s Smart Traveller site notes “some drugs used to treat attention deficit

hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are illegal in Indonesia”. “If you plan to bring medication, check if it’s legal in Indonesia,” the section reads. “Take enough legal medicine for your trip.” Mr Peterson’s lawyer Edward Pangkahila told 7News on Monday he’s confident his client will avoid drug charges with information from the doctor now in the hands of narcotics police. He’s hopeful the Australian man will be released on Monday or Tuesday. [au.news.yahoo.com November 25, 2019]

Climate change brings worst drought to Indonesia since 2015

Regions in at least 11 southern Indonesian provinces, some of which have gone more than seven months without rain, are expected to see the prolonged dry spell continue until December, in another sign of changing weather patterns in the country. Cities and regencies across Lampung, Banten, West and East Java, Yogyakarta, Bali, West and East Nusa Tenggara as well as South and Southeast Sulawesi have not seen rain for more than 61 days straight, according to Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) data as of Nov. 13. The agency has raised the drought status for the said regions to the highest level of awas (warning), putting the chance of low-intensity rainfall in the areas in the following 20 days at 70 percent.

BMKG’s climate variability analysis head Indra Gustari said an anomaly had been observed this year, marked by the lateness of the rainy season that would not come until late November or December in southern Indonesia, including Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara. This is in contrast to most of Sumatra and Kalimantan, which are expected to see their rainfall peak over the same period. “There are two factors: First is the weak El Niño phenomenon that we observed from the middle of last year until July this year. However, a more dominant factor is the relatively low sea surface temperature, a global phenomenon known as the positive Indian Ocean Dipole,” Indra told The Jakarta Post on Friday. [www.thejakartapost.com November 22, 2019]

In the worst dry season the country has experienced since 2015, most affected regencies have experienced months without rain. Buleleng in Bali and Sampang in East Java have not seen rain for more than 216 days, while East Sumba in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has suffered the longest at 249 days. The drought statuses of some regions in Bali, NTT, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Southeast Sulawesi and Maluku, meanwhile, have been put at waspada (advisory), meaning that the regions have not seen rain for more than 21 consecutive days with a slightly higher prospect of low-intensity rainfall. Badung has two temporary trash options after Suwung dump ban The Badung district government continues to discuss the best way to overcome the trash dump issue after Suwung landfill is closed to it at the end of the month. At the moment, the government states that there are two temporary options. The Green House at the government area and buildings in Sempidi or deliver them to 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Integrated Waste Management Areas (TPST) near Mengwi Terminal. Previously, the Bali provincial government provided a solution by offering their owned land for landfill, in the Ungasan, Canggu, and Sobangan areas but that has been rejected by residents. The daily average of trash build up in Badung district now reaches approx. 281 tons, with 19.25 tons of that absorbed by all the TPSTs in Badung, while the rest is delivered to Suwung. The Head of Badung District Environment Board (DLHK), I Putu Eka Merthawan, confirmed the options when he was interviewed on Tuesday. He said that both of the options are temporary because the government is still discussing the final location that will be set as the landfill area in Badung. “Yes, the landfill construction is still in process, as it needs a large area to make it. We have reviewed two locations, Green House at the Badung Government Center which stands on 25 are (2500 m2 of land), and 3R TPST on Mengwitani near Mengwi Terminal which stands on 50 are of land,” he said to balipost.com. He also confirmed that they used existing waste management areas for a temporary solution while waiting for the new landfill plan. “Actually we can optimize the existing landfills. The trash that is collected from residents could be recycled there. And we definitely won’t construct an open landfill, we will construct a closed one. The trash that is delivered there can be recycled immediately,” he added. Meanwhile, the Head of PDI Perjuangan Party, I Gusti Anom Gumanti, said that the provincial government should give at least a year to the Badung District government before they forbid them delivering rubbish to Suwung. He hoped that the governor can mediate the issue with related parties. “This trash issue is quite sensitive for the Badung District government, because Badung is the main tourism in Bali and even in Indonesia and it can affect the Badung and Bali tourism industry,” he said. He also said that Badung District

government plans to fully manage their own trash by 2021 and they have constructed 1,000 village-based trash banks. The Badung District government has also commanded all villages and sub-villages to construct 3R TPST and they also planned to construct a landfill with eco-green waste management technology, but both of them need time. In an article in NusaBali it was stated that the rubbish problem has also been discussed in Jakarta. It was revealed, the issue of the Suwung rubbish dump was briefly discussed by President Jokowi in a limited cabinet meeting at the Jakarta State Palace recently as stated by Govenor Koster yesterday in Denpasar. “Yes, the issue of the Suwung rubbish dump has been discussed in a limited meeting chaired by President Jokowi at the State Palace. We should be ashamed. Imagine, just because the garbage issue is not over, President Jokowi has intervened,” Governor Koster said at the plenary session yesterday afternoon. According to Koster, the handling of the waste problem at the Suwung dump has been decided. In this decision Tabanan and Gianyar Regencies won’t be sending waste to the Suwung landfill. Only Denpasar City can send trash to Suwung. While Badung Regency, has been given a month to stop sending waste to Suwung. During this month, Badung is only allowed to send garbage to the Suwung landfill with a maximum of 15 trucks per day. [seminyaktimes.com November. 12, 2019]

Alternative Voice As so often is the case, most of us only catch up with the cutting edge of things long after the edge has been well blunted. Fashion and popular music is where we see the phenomenon most. Today it’s the meme. Back in 2015, according to the website <Know Your Meme>, a young woman in New York twittered the phrase “OK Boomer” in a retort summing up with an eye-roll the sardonic view, she and her peers have of the post-war generation and its failings. It really wasn’t until earlier this year that the phrase became used inter-generationally. It went viral earlier this month on You Tube, when Chloe Swarbrick, a 25-year old entrepreneur and Green Party MP in New Zealand who, in the midst of an incendiary speech on climate change, was heckled by senior male colleague. “OK Boomer” she said dismissively carrying on with her speech. It seems the generational wars are finally upon us.

Adding for good measure “...and when we mention these things you tell us ‘Well, if you just ate less avocado toast, you’d be able to afford a mortgage. You know what? We just gonna have to fix things ourselves”. By and large Boomers, particularly those in positions of power, do not do themselves or other Boomers any favours by such avocado and barrista remarks. Boomers still sit athwart political and economic power. As parents and grandparents they own properties and equities, often obtained on the cheap via the Big Steal, when the commons was shamefully flogged off in the privatisations of the 1980s. We Boomers were the principal beneficiaries of the huge social advances that took place in the post-war period 1945-85, but in truth that was really achieved by our parents, not us. Yes, as a result we were able to break with the social mores of the past, improve women’s rights and reduce racial discrimination. And yes, there was rock music. But so what? I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to ask a Gen Z’er about that....

One of the ways we know this is the call to the colours of our generational cohort. Whether we wish it or not, we have all of us, been assigned our place in the coming conflict. We are Baby Boomers (1944-64), Gen X’ers (1965-79), Millennials (1980-94) and Gen Z’ers born after 1995. It is not so much the corrupt pols, conniving lobbyists, nor even their masters, the seriously filthy rich, that have brought us to this.

Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg is remorseless when she says “...you come to us young ones for hope. How dare you? You have stolen our dreams and our future with your empty words”. Nor does 30-year old US Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hold back. “We grow up, we come of age, and we realise that previous generations decided to screw over our planet, and create endless wars, and mess up our economy”.

And, more to the point, most Boomers are not well-off and large numbers of them remain poor, victims of an economy rigged to favour the seriously rich of any cohort, be it Boomer, X’er or Millennial (and, any minute now, Gen Z’er). It’s true, of course, that young people will be entering into a potentially even more perilous future than their elders. They will be the ones who have to live through the worst of the climate catastrophe and spend the bulk of their years working at non-unionized jobs, in a gig economy. And if that’s not enough, they will have to contend with a post-human future where the rich can genetically and cyber-tweak themselves into a super-elite that is substantially different from the rest of us. Already, Yuval Noah Harari, Isreali philosopher of choice among the titans of Silicon Valley, writes of the majority as the “useless class” since their labour is redundant and wonders what will become of them? Whether or not their masters would willingly want to pay for the welfare of people who are not ‘needed’ is a very good question. If “we” have to divide ourselves, it makes sense to look at these class divisions rather than inventing common cultural characteristics across generations.

It is the marketing mavens who have diced us and packaged us, simply to sell us more goods and services according to the economic and social habits they’ve divined are common to our cohort. Aided and abetted by lazy journalists and editors, who find it hard to resist a non-story, if it can arouse some reaction. It has taken forty years, but at last with the Gen Z’ers, a generation appears to have come of age who are not only prepared to take on and speak truth to power but do it in such a way that it strips away the obfuscation and distortion of our rulers, and those whom they serve, laying bare the greed and moral bankruptcy that remains. Davos man and his creatures have finally been outed and stand revealed. Unfortunately for Boomers they are the ones whom Gen Z’ers and Millennials hold most responsible for unaffordable housing, growing economic hardship and an impending climate apocalypse they will now have to handle.

generation most in a position to have prevented things from deteriorating to the extent they have. That said, would anything have been different if Gen X’ers and Millenials (or even Gen Z’ers) have been running things at the time?

This is no time to play the generational blame game. Workers of all ages barely earn enough to survive, much less save for retirement. In 2018 PBS Newshour reported that half of Americans age 65 have less than $25,000 in savings. One in four don’t even have $1,000.

We are also the ones who sat back, while others of our cohort ran away with the game. From the 1980s onward self-serving and powerful men with their hirelings rolled back all the advances that our fathers and mothers had won for us. Yet today our infrastructure and social services are in decay and the gulf between the rich and the poor is greater than at any time since the 1890s. Mention any of this and you will likely be accused of being a socialist or of advocating class warfare. As if socialism was a crime and that an undeclared class war was not already in full swing, waged for some three decades now by the seriously rich against the disadvantaged. The danger in all this is we may miss the real point and are conned into a Generational War and not the real fight, which is indeed - a Class War. Be in no doubt about it. Boomers have a lot to reflect on, since they were the

C/HE/U-4 Dec 19

We need to recreate some of the conditions that made life better during the postwar years Boomers were born into. That means - organizing ourselves and pressuring our political leaders to reshape the economy to work for the many, not the few. Ill fares the land, to hastening ills a prey, Where wealth accumulates, and men decay... wrote Oliver Goldsmith in his poem The Deserted Village in 1770 as he travelled through England and Scotland at the time of the enclosures. The phrase was borrowed by the late Tony Judt in “Ill Fares the Land – A Treatise on our Present Discontents”, a short book we could all read and take to heart.

BOOMER CORNER Dizzy It all began while swimming one afternoon and twisting my body I suddenly felt a little wave of dizziness. Whoa. I stopped swimming for a few minutes wondering what had happened. Then I continued my swim as normal. However, after I returned home to take a shower, when I bent over to wrap a towel around my head, the room spun. I grabbed the sink to prevent me from falling. That was really scary.

the dizziness was gone. Hurray! I tried both techniques for vertigo but found the Epley maneuver easier. When I put a post on Facebook about my vertigo, I was surprised how many friends had been feeling dizzy also. With my research I discovered that vertigo is quite common. Usually it’s the benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s disease and labyrinthitis. The other types of vertigo are rarer with serious side effects. So I’m going to talk about BPPV as the most common type. Dizziness affects approximately 20 -40% of people at some point in their life. It occurs more commonly with age and affects women two to three times more often than men. It’s more likely for a person with BPPV to get repeated episodes of vertigo with movement and feel normal between the episodes. The episodes should last less than a minute, producing rapid eye movement known as nystagmus. What causes vertigo?

After that I began experiencing bouts of dizziness, especially in bed when turning over onto my side. I began to move very carefully in bed when lying down and getting up. Sometimes when I bent over to pick something up I felt dizzy. It was very unsettling. I found myself holding on to things when walking especially on stairs, never knowing when I would feel dizzy.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common vestibular disorder and occurs when loose calcium carbonate debris has broken off of the otoconial membrane and enters a semicircular canal thereby creating the sensation of motion. People with BPPV may experience brief periods of vertigo, usually under a minute, which occur with change in the position. That doesn’t sound too serious, but small head movements cause the loose crystals to move, triggering your inner-ear sensors to send mixed messages to your brain. It occurs in 0.6% of the population yearly with 10% having an attack during their lifetime. It is believed to be due to a mechanical malfunction of the inner ear. BPPV may be diagnosed with the Dix-Hallpike test and can be effectively treated with The Epley maneuver or the Brandt-Daroff exercise.

When I got home I opened my laptop and began researching vertigo treatments and learned quite a lot. There’s a second exercise used called the Epley Maneuver, which is similar to Brand Danof. It’s very disconcerting to make yourself dizzy doing these exercises twice a day. But after four days,

Does Epley maneuver work immediately? Most people say their symptoms go away right after they do the maneuver. In some cases, it may take a few times for the procedure to work. Or you may have another problem that’s causing your symptoms of vertigo. The home Epley maneuver only works to treat vertigo from BPPV. Brandt-Daroff Exercise for Vertigo 1. Start in an upright, seated position in the middle of your bed. 2. Move into the lying position on one side with your nose pointed up at about a 45-degree angle. Move to the side which you experience dizziness. You may experience dizziness when you lie down. 3. Remain in this position for about 30 seconds (or until the vertigo subsides, whichever is longer). Then move back to the seated position. 4. Repeat on the other side. 5. Repeat exercises twice a day.

The Epley Maneuver

After a couple of weeks I saw a doctor friend and asked her about the dizziness. She said vertigo is usually caused by ear problems and suggested I see an ear specialist. I contacted my ear doctor and made an appointment for the next morning. After listening to my symptoms he asked me if I noticed the dizziness on one side or the other in bed. I wasn’t sure. Then he asked me to sit in his examining chair. He checked both ears with his camera and found nothing abnormal. Then he tilted it back low and asked me to turn my head to the right. The room was spinning for several seconds. Then he asked me to turn to the left side. Nothing. The problem was in my right inner ear. Sitting at his desk he opened his computer and showed me images of the inner ear canal explaining that sometimes crystals become lodged in the canal which affect the brain causing vertigo. Then he showed me a video clip of Brand Danoff exercise to move the crystals. He also gave me some medication to speed up the process.

90 degrees. Maintain this position for 1 minute. This position may again cause dizziness. 4. With your head still rotated maximally towards your good side slowly roll your entire body on to your good side. Keep your head and neck fixed as much as possible. If done properly you should be able to stare down at the floor. Maintain this position for 1 minute. 5. Finally to complete the Epley maneuver return to a sitting positon with your head up but flexed forward approximately 45 degrees. Maintain this position for 1 minute. 6. This maneuver should take five minutes and repeated 2 more times prior to going to bed.

If you’re experiencing vertigo see an ear doctor right away. It’s a bit scary walking around never knowing when you’ll feel dizzy.

1. Begin by sitting upright in the middle of your bed. Rotate your head horizontally towards the ear causing your symptoms approximately 45 degrees. Maintain this position for 1 minute. 2. Keep your head and neck in this position and gently lie down. Maintain this position for 1 minute. Beware this position will likely cause dizziness, which can last for a few seconds or longer. Stay here until the vertigo stops. 3. While still lying on your back slowly rotate your head towards the good ear as far as possible or approximately

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH ASBESTOS ..... “Could Cause a Cancer Explosion” Asbestos lines many Indonesian buildings and health experts fear a coming cancer ‘explosion’. Many countries have long since banned the use and import of deadly asbestos. But on our doorstep, builders and factories across Indonesia are still using asbestos in massive volumes, oblivious to the danger.

Key points: • • •

Indonesia is the second-biggest asbestos importer in the world Up to 10% of all buildings in Indonesia contain white asbestos The Government says it’s up to the building industry to stop using it.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of an ‘epidemic’ of asbestos-related diseases in South-East Asia. Yet as more and more countries ban the lethal substance, a powerful industry lobby group is doubling down on efforts to promote one form of asbestos as safe and expand its market in Indonesia and South-East Asia. The group even claims that chrysotile - commonly known as white asbestos - dissolves in the lungs after 14 days. About 10 per cent of Indonesian homes have roofs made from white asbestos, a proven carcinogen that can cause cancers including mesothelioma and several other diseases. The danger is all the more disturbing in a country with the world’s fourth-biggest population, and where natural disasters are not uncommon, asbestos and can often be found in the rubble after earthquakes, landslides etc.

Indonesia faces ‘a huge potential explosion’ in disease

International research suggests that almost 6,000 Indonesians a year could potentially develop an asbestos-related cancer. But a lack of public information and education means workers and residents have no idea of the health risk. Experts fear that workers at Indonesian factories processing asbestos building materials are most at risk. Indonesia’s Government said it was aware of the potential danger from asbestos, but said it was the industry itself that needed to be convinced of the need to stop using it. One major challenge in Indonesia is the lack of diagnostic tools to determine how many people already have an asbestos- related disorder. Currently, asbestosis and the thickening of the lung lining can be confirmed through CT scans.

Why is white asbestos still legal?

So far, 66 countries including Australia have banned all forms of asbestos. Canada, once a major exporter, finally banned it last year. Vietnam and Laos are working towards a ban. Brazil

used to be the world’s third-largest exporter of white asbestos, but abandoned the industry in 2017. Asbestos is a mineral made up of tiny fibers. It can be positively identified only with a special type of microscope. There are several types of asbestos fibers; some are more harmful than others. In the past, asbestos was added to a variety of products to strengthen them and to provide heat insulation and fire resistance. Many homes were made using asbestos for insulation, flooring and in heating and electrical systems. The danger of using asbestos has been recognized throughout history. Warning about the health effects of asbestos can be found in writings from Ancient Greece. If you are exposed to asbestos, most of the fibers that you inhale are expelled when you exhale. Only a few fibers remain in the lungs and these tend to lodge in the lining of the lungs, called the pleura. The mineral fibers that make up asbestos act like tiny knives and cause microscopic punctures in the air sacs that line the inside of the lung. These air sacs act like balloons, filling up and releasing oxygen as you breathe. Over time the fibers cause scarring and inflammation that makes the pleura thicken. When the lining of the lungs gets thick, it loses its elastic properties and the amount of oxygen you get when you breathe is reduced. Many cases of asbestos related disease have been found in families of the people who worked with asbestos. The fibers cling to work clothes and are released into the air at home, affecting anyone who lives with the person exposed to asbestos at work. Families who live in areas where asbestos is mined also have a greater risk for developing asbestos related disorders. The symptoms of these diseases do not usually appear until about 20 to 30 years after the first exposure to asbestos. From studies of people who were exposed to asbestos in factories and shipyards, we know that breathing high levels of irritating asbestos fibers can lead to an increased risk of lung cancer.

What Should Be Done About Asbestos In The Home?

If you think asbestos may be in your home, don’t panic! Usually the best thing is to leave asbestos material that is in good condition alone. Generally, material in good condition will not release asbestos fibers. There is no danger unless fibers are released and inhaled into the lungs. Check material regularly if you suspect it may contain asbestos. Don’t touch it, but look for signs of wear or damage such as tears, abrasions, or water damage. Damaged material may release asbestos fibers. This is particularly true if you often disturb it by hitting, rubbing, or handling it, or if

it is exposed to extreme vibration or airflow. Sometimes, the best way to deal with slightly damaged material is to limit access to the area and not touch or disturb it. Discard damaged or worn asbestos gloves, stovetop pads, or ironing board covers. Before you have your house remodeled, find out whether asbestos materials are present.

How To Identify Materials That Contain Asbestos

You can’t tell whether a material contains asbestos simply by looking at it, unless it is labeled. If in doubt, treat the material as if it contains asbestos.

Asbestos Do’s And Don’ts For The Homeowner . . . . . . .

Do keep activities to a minimum in any areas having damaged material that may contain asbestos. Do take every precaution to avoid damaging asbestos material. Don’t dust, sweep or vacuum debris that may contain asbestos. Don’t saw, sand, scrape, or drill holes in asbestos materials. Don’t use abrasive pads or brushes on power strippers to strip wax from asbestos flooring. Never use a power stripper on a dry floor. Don’t sand or try to level asbestos flooring or its backing. When asbestos flooring needs replacing, install new floor covering over it, if possible. Don’t track material that could contain asbestos through the house. If you cannot avoid walking through the area, have it cleaned with a wet mop.

Naturally all the information on asbestos identification and removal that I have found says, “Call your professional to handle the situation”. However I have never seen any “tukang” wondering around in haz-mat suites. So if anyone out there has information on who to contact for asbestos handling please do share. Ubud Area

Ubud News

NEW FUTSAL CENTRE

Indonesians love sport, with soccer being one of the most popular games to watch and play. So it’s not surprising that the convenient, low-cost game of futsal has been gaining popularity, with futsal centres popping up both to the east, near Mas, and to the southwest in Singakerta. Do you know futsal? It is played on an indoor court with boundaries, unlike indoor soccer, where players rely on rebounds from walls. Futsal players use a slightly smaller ball that doesn’t bounce as much. Many of the teams around Ubud have a mix of local and ex-pat players. If you live north of Ubud you’ll be pleased to know there are also courts almost completed to the north too. On Jalan Tirta Tawar – perhaps six kilometres from Ubud – these courts are set just to the side of the road, with peaceful views of the ricefields all around. (Keep going about 2km past Munivar Ashram and Om Ham Resort). The worker I spoke to said the courts will open in early December, and they will welcome both regular teams and “one off” patrons. For a very intensive week from December 13-20, with two four-hour sessions early and late in the day, Bex is offering specialised yoga training for women at the Yoga Barn. It will be an intimate group – only 16 places offered – and will cover everything from the philosophy of yoga to challenges in intimate relationships and erratic menstrual cycles, eating disorders and addictions. Pulau Plastik Highlights Dangers of Indonesia’s Plastic Waste Around 1.3 million tons of Indonesia’s plastic waste reaches the oceans annually, polluting some the most biodiverse areas in the world. Bali contributes approximately 110,000 tons to this equation, with single-use plastic packaging being one of the main causes of this growing problem. Pulau Plastik (Plastic Island) harnesses the power of popular culture to motivate Indonesians to give single-use plastic the flick. In the works since 2018, the initiative uses film and public service announcements as campaign tools to improve community understanding of the negative impact of plastic pollution. It also encourages Indonesians to partake and advocate for solutions to the problem.

One of the main parts of the campaign is a four-part series entitled Pulau Plastik, which has now been screened in more than 60 communities across Bali, Lombok, Java, Sulawesi, Sumatra and Papua. The series, which uses art and music as agents of change, is hosted by Gede Robi, the frontman of the Bali-based band Navicula. “We have produced and launched our pilot episode in February this year. We have also completed the other episodes in August,” says Sergina Loncle, Associate Director of Communications and Strategic Initiatives at Kopernik, who manages the day-to-day implementation activities, deliverables, budget and donor reports of Pulau Plastik. “While we have already started screening these new

episodes at community events in September, we are also planning to hold an official launch and screening at the Badung Market on the sixth of December.” Building on the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana (or the harmony between humans, god and nature), the 20-minute episodes highlight a number of issues that relate to single-use plastics. The first episode, entitled “In Harmony with Our Oceans,” looks at how microplastics make their way into our food through the seafood we consume. Episode two, “The Consequences of Our Actions,” talks about the importance of separating waste both at home and at the village level. The episode entitles “The Turtle that Carried the World” explores how a single piece of discarded plastic can kill a turtle and proposes alternatives to single-use plastic packaging. This episode also takes restaurant owners into the world of the first zero waste restaurant in Indonesia to explore plastic-free business alternatives. The final episode, “The Relation Between Humans, God and Nature,” follows Balinese youth as they tackle pollution at the Besakih temple. The main target audience of the Pulau Plastik campaign are Balinese and Indonesians between the ages of 15 and 50 who are active followers of popular culture. As such, Sergina believes that popular culture is an excellent medium to reach this demographic. “Gede Robi co-created Pulau Plastik with Ewa Wojkowska, the Co-Founder and COO of Kopernik. As the frontman of an award-winning Indonesian rock band who spreads social messages, and with whom Kopernik has previously worked on a number of projects, Robi makes an ideal host for Pulau Plastik. Having already been the host of a popular Metro TV Series called Viva Barista, Robi has brought his media experience to the campaign. He is also one of Bali’s leading environmental activists.” Pulau Plastik has also produced three public service announcements (PSAs) to motivate Indonesians to take action against plastic pollution. “These PSAs feature Balinese musicians and influencers, as well as Balinese cultural references. They talk about the issue of plastic

waste in a light and humorous tone to encourage people to share or repost them,” Sergina says. Pulau Plastik is also working on a feature-length documentary, which is currently at the post-production stage and is scheduled for release in mid-2020. Also hosted by Gede Robi, the film looks how plastic waste ends up in Bali’s landfills, the sea and eventually our food. To help individuals and business owners to move away from single-use packaging, Pulau Plastik has compiled a list of vendors that stock eco-friendly products, which can be found on the organization’s website. The list contains suppliers of reusable bags, disposable straws, beeswax food wraps and bamboo cutlery. Those interested in the products are encouraged to contact the vendors directly and get onboard the zero-waste ride. Thus far, the community response to the campaign has been very positive. While most of those who have attended one of Pulau Plastik’s screenings were already aware of the issue of plastic waste in Indonesia, the message in the films has strengthened both their awareness of the problem and motivation to do something about it. “We have witnessed high engagement and positive responses from our audiences,” says Sergina. “They are really interested in the issue of plastic pollution, and have said that the delivery of information and solutions in the Pulau Plastik series is simple and applicable to their daily lives.” For more information about the Pulau Plastik campaign visit http://pulauplastik.org/en.
