HEALTH in 2017 and BEYOND What can we expect? Medical technology is progressing in leaps and bounds, and for future health care innovations think small, very very small, like microchips so small they fit INSIDE a single cell.
Previously, brain implants to help move these artificial limbs have had limited success because the person had to think about each individual action (open hand, close hand) in order to move the limb. But now researchers are putting implants in the area of the brain that controls the intention to move, not just the physical movement itself. This allows patients to fluidly guide a robotic limb. 4. Fine-tuning genes
While much of this technology is not yet on the general menu, and certainly a long way off being integrated into the Indonesian medical system, it certainly is a taster of what may soon be commonplace. Here are 10 innovative new therapies which may soon change the face of medical treatment for many years to come. 1. Genetically tailored treatment Should you could get medical care tailored just for you based on your genetic information? Studies have shown that taking a one-size-fits-all approach is not the answer to successful medical treatment. A new initiative has shown that treatments should be fitted to each patient’s unique differences. This may answer such important questions like why does a medical treatment work for some people with the same disease but not for others? One million volunteers will be asked to share their genomic and other molecular information with researchers working to understand factors that influence health, which may revolutionize the health care system. 2. Busting brain clots A tiny new tool to get rid of brain clots could revolutionize stroke treatment. Although clot-dissolving drugs are the first line of treatment for the most common type of stroke, when they don’t do the trick, physicians can now use a “stent” retriever to remove the small mass. A wire with a mesh-like tip is guided through the artery into the brain to grab the clot. When the wire is removed, the clot goes with it. The American Heart Association has given the device its strongest recommendation, after studies found it improves the odds that certain patients will survive and function normally again.
Next year could see major strides toward the goal of cutting harmful genetic mistakes from a person’s DNA. A gene-editing tool is a powerful technology that allows scientists to easily correct or edit DNA. The technology was recently used to eradicate leukemia in a British child by giving her gene-edited immune cells to fight off the disease. This could represent a huge step toward treating other diseases, including correcting gene mutations that cause inherited diseases, however ethicists and scientists are concerned that the technology could also be used to alter traits for nonmedical reasons. 5. New cancer vaccines Your body’s immune system fights off germs that cause infections - could it be taught to fight off cancer cells? That’s the idea behind new immunotherapy cancer vaccines, which train the immune system to use its antiviral fighting response to destroy cancer cells without harming healthy cells. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA already has approved such vaccines for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer and melanoma. Current research is focused on pairing new and old vaccines, including the tetanus vaccine with a newer cancer vaccine to treat glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. Those who received the dual vaccine lived three to seven more years after treatment than those who received an injection without the tetanus portion. Among the most eagerly anticipated vaccines is a lung cancer vaccine. Work on such a vaccine, first developed in Cuba. 6. Faster public health vaccines In the wake of the Ebola outbreak last year, the process for producing vaccines to protect the public against a possible epidemic has gone into overdrive. The fear that, with international travel, a single person could potentially infect huge numbers of people has led to a system to be able to immunize a large number of people really fast. Where previously it took decades to develop a vaccine, the Ebola vaccine was ready in six months. A similarly accelerated process was behind the approval of a meningitis B vaccine following outbreaks at two universities.
3. Brain-limb connection 7. Targeting cancer The goal of linking the brain to a robotic limb to help paralyzed people and amputees move naturally is closer than ever.
Researchers are closing in on the day when a single drug
C/He/I-23 Nov 16
will treat many different cancers. While traditional clinical trials focus on testing a drug for a particular type of cancer based on its location - breast or lung, for example - new studies are testing therapies that target a specific genetic mutation found in a tumor, regardless of where the cancer originated. Results of an international trial found that a drug focused on a single genetic mutation can be effective across multiple cancer types, including a common form of lung cancer and a rare form of bone cancer. 8. Wearable sensors Wearable health sensors could soon change the way people with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and asthma, control and monitor their condition. Drug companies and researchers are looking into using wearable technology to monitor patients more accurately in clinical trials, and hospitals and outpatient clinics could use it to monitor patients after discharge. Devices, from stick-on sensors to wristbands and special clothing, can already be used to monitor respiratory and heart rates, including EKG readings, as well as body temperature and glucose level. Stress levels and inflammation readings may be added in the future. 9. Fighting superbugs Decoding the DNA of bacteria is transforming the way we identify infectious diseases in the microbiology lab. That could help prevent the spread of dangerous, drug-resistant infections in hospitals and nursing homes. This could help protect vulnerable patients against the spread of superbugs like MRSA, C. diff and streptococcus pneumoniae that currently resist treatment. 10. Better cancer screening Some of the deadliest, most difficult-to-find cancers may be detected by analyzing blood for abnormal proteins. Cancer produces these abnormal protein structures. Up to now, blood tests weren’t sensitive enough to identify them. A new type of analysis allows researchers to find the proteins earlier, which mean cancer treatment can be started at an earlier stage. A new test trial using protein analysis identified twice as many cases of ovarian cancer at an earlier stage than current tests.

The Magus & the Educator 20th Century Icons for the New Millennium Now that we are well into the second decade of the new millennium we get a clearer idea of what’s important, what we will be bringing into the new century as essential building blocks and passes into history. Where now are those pillars of the 20th Century thought, Marxism and Freudianism that dominated the politics, economics and intellectual life for the best part of the century? Where are the great men, the statesmen and soldiers, who bestrode the world like giants? With the passing of Fidel Castro they are gone. We shall not see their like again. Our media is too product and celebrity-driven for that. It may be banal, but it’s no bad thing when you consider the century of cruel wars and mass murder from which we have emerged.
can change the world. By staying on message, he more than anyone else in our modern age, with his grouchy yet remorseless elegant Edwardian prose, has blown away the spiritual detritus of ages.
War and violence may not have disappeared but a good many of us have moved on from the time we could be enrolled in seeking to wipe each other from the face of the earth in the name of God and Country. We prefer to get on with our own lives and know there has to be a better way of doing things than trying to kill people we don’t know and who never did us any harm.
The Educator Most of us subscribe to the concept that education is the key to a better world. Question is, whether plutocrat, tiger mother, professional person, tradesman or lumpen proletariat, what are we educating our children for? It is natural for parents to want the best for their children but if the rest of the world is badly-educated and increasingly disadvantaged and resentful on account of it, what kind of world are we creating for them?
Encouragingly, more and more of us are coming to understand that while politics may be necessary to manage things, it is doesn’t solve anything. In fact the idea that the big political idea can solve our problems can be dangerous, often lethal. All big ideas, be they political or religious, no matter how idealistic and notwithstanding the excellent moral precepts proclaimed, are essentially hierarchical, authoritative and culturally divisive. The idea that we can order our affairs in way that sustains the planet and ourselves, that we can live peaceably with each other in mutual respect and freedom haunts us, but seems a dream too far. Progress is incremental at best and we are ever beset by new challenges. It is easy to retreat to our private bunkers, dismissing our hopes and the hopes of others as pie-in-the-sky. And yet… despite or perhaps as a result of the horrors of the last century, the building blocks for a better future are firmly in place and resonate with increasing numbers of us. Evidence for this can be found in the lives and work of two people: the philosopher and mystic Jiddhu Krishnamurti (1895-1986) and the educator Maria Montessori (18701952). The Magus Born to Brahmin parents in Southern India at age fourteen Krishnamurti was adopted by the Theosophist Society and groomed by them as the vehicle for the return of the “World Teacher”. In 1929 he publicly renounced the role announcing that “truth was a pathless land”. He became the quintessential 20thC. iconoclast and for nigh on 60 years was a one-man wrecking crew, taking a sledgehammer to all authoritarian spiritual traditions, while recognizing the perennial philosophy that was common to them all. He was passionate and remorseless in his message that a better world could only come about through self-knowledge, which must be sought within and not given us by a guru. The way to self-knowledge is simple yet arduous, he said. It requires you to be present and conscious in the moment at all times. All else is memory, not reality. Experience, being the past projected into the future with no connection to the present, is not reality. Meditation is the key component in the process of self-knowledge and the ability to accept without judgement who and what you are. It is, he said, a bit like learning to ride a bicycle – you get better at it as you go along.

Maria Montessori was born in Italy qualifying as a doctor of medicine in Rome she later went on to study philosophy and psychology. Working first with disadvantaged children she went on to develop a scientific system of learning for preschool and primary level children opening her first Casa Bambini in 1906. The Montessori system stresses a child’s own initiative and natural abilities, especially through practical play, allowing them to develop at their own pace. From the start the children acquire universal values of kindness, compassion, co-operation and responsibility. The learning is tactile with teaching aids providing the soundest basis for onward learning. The Montessori system quickly proved effective and soon spread throughout Europe, North America to the rest of the world and was quickly expanded through primary levels to high school levels, where it successfully integrates with existing university entrance examinations such as the International Baccalaureate and GCSE. There are now over 4,000 Montessori schools worldwide operating in both the private and public educational domains and demonstrating high scholastic results.

No better or practical example of how education can affect our world for the better came from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, India in 1992 when a famous 16th Century mosque in Ayodhya was demolished by Hindu nationalists. Terrible sectarian riots ensued and thousands were killed with the violence spreading throughout India to other countries. Yet in Lucknow, just 40 miles away, there were no killings. The reason for this was the presence of the City Montessori School (CMS), the largest school in the world comprising 15 branches and 19,000 students. A thousand pupils and staff of CMS took to the streets every day marching to proclaim the common humanity in all religions. It worked and the CMS campus became the venue of the talks that ensued leading to the cessation of violence in Uttar Pradesh. Indeed, anyone who has had the privilege of observing a Montessori class in action, as I did recently here in Bali, will immediately see how those events in Lucknow came to pass. It is based on respect for our world and all its people, inculcated lovingly and caringly by parents and teachers from an early age onward.
In other words “being here now” is not something going to a seminar is going to help you with, that’s a bit like paying for a gym membership. Essentially you just have to go do it. Pretty soon you will get an idea of just how much selfjudgment. Whenever you catch yourself telling yourself you have to be a certain way – go and lie down. Krishnamurti’s gift to us is that while he manifestly believed in the Divine Mystery he did not try to tell us what it was, or satisfy our craving to co-opt or advance up the spiritual ladder. No, we had to do the work. It is the only way, and from that self-knowledge an individual moral sense emerges that
The process goes forward as we speak, we just need to see it. If cynics are disappointed optimists open to redemption through the works of people like Krishnamurti and Maria Montessori then the numbers are with us and the prospect for a better world beckons.

brass animal ornaments, shells, and woven mats for function and style. Tribal masks, sailing boats and original commissioned artworks by local artists also adorn the shelves and walls, making a trip to Jungle Trader not only a visual feast, but a must for the discerning decorator. The Frugal Balinist *Natural air-drying. God created evaporation, so let it work for you! An economical, efficient and environmentally friendly way to dry pots, pans, dishes, cups and glasses and eating and cooking implement is to use a rak piring available at Dapur Prima stores, supermarkets and traditional markets. These large drying racks are particularly useful if you have a large family, don’t have enough kitchen countertop space or don’t want to buy an expensive dishwasher (mesin cuci piring) that can cost Rp6,500,000 (Henkel) to Rp16 million (Ariston). Placed inside or outside the kitchen, put a rubber or vinyl mat underneath to catch the dripping water. .Masters is a sturdy brand; the largest model costing only Rp150,000. More stylish and expensive aluminum models run up to Rp300,000.

*Money. If you are a parent, don’t make any emergency transfers while in a state of panic, no matter how realistic the callers sound and even if the callers know your name, the name of your child and other details about your family. *Ujung-Ujungnya Duit (“At the End is Money”) means that it just takes money to speed up a new business permit, passport, driver’s license or enrollment of a child in school. *Known as the “mini-ATMs,” transfer funds cheaply to and ffrom 50 Bank Rakyat Indonesia “BRI Links” scattered all over Indonesia; i.e. under R Rp2 million costs only Rp5000 and between Rp7,500,000 and Rp10 million is only R Rp20,000. *The limit of taking money out of Indonesia is Rp100 million. If you go through your bank, you have to change from IDR into US$. If you arrive in Bali with th c currency worth more than Rp100 million in your possession, any amount over that is fined by Bali Airport Customs at 10% of the currency’s value. *Bank Indonesia m maintains the SIKUPVA website (www.balimoneychanger.com) that lists the location o of all the authorized (read: honest) moneychangers nearest to you on Bali. *You’re no not allowed to take more than $10,000 cash into the U.S. undeclared; if you have a la larger amount of money, use a combination of transferring and carrying it on your pe person. *For easy non-cash transactions, purchase pre-paid cards such as BCA Flazz, but hold on to it tightly because anyone can use it in 22 cities nationwide if the card gets lost. *Ada gula, ada semut. “Where there is sugar, there are ants.” When you have money, people are drawn to you; when you lose it, they dump you. *If you get a credit card through Mega Bank, they raise your limits several times over several years. *Never take your passport with you when you go out partying; replacing involves mucho bucks and hassles.
*Check points. The hours when children are traveling to and from school (7 am-1 pm) are the most likely time when police set up check points for those not having a driver’s license or registration, not wearing a helmet or seatbelt, modifying a license plate, driving with malfunctioning safety equipment, violating traffic regulations or exceeding the passenger limit. There’s an unwritten rule whereby police usually allow students to travel for a kilometer or so from their home to school without a helmet or SIM (driver’s license) if they take the direct route and don’t wander too far from the main roads. Some kids who have left school take advantage of this laxity by wearing their old school uniforms, knowing that the police are unlikely to stop them. *Rental pointers. Indonesia is one of the few countries in the world that requires the entire rental amount for the full term of the lease to be paid in advance. Because of this, it’s often difficult to have the landlord be responsible for repairs and maintenance after they have received the lump sum in advance. Therefore, it’s highly advisable that the house be properly audited prior to the handover to determine if there are any major problems that need to be fixed. Take lots of interior and exterior photos to back up your claim that none of the damage was caused by you when the time comes to move out. Don’t try to drive the hardest bargain possible with your landlord but strive for a mutually agreeable rental/lease amount. Because of financial straits or a critical family situation, he might accept, but later realize that he’d been taken and will get a fairer rental amount out of you one way or the other. *Household tips. Don’t register your home as a villa with the PDAM water company ny on to avoid paying higher industrial F 1-4 or F-1 water rates. *Removable vacuum action Manual Water Pump Dispensers (Rp40,000) for the 5 Gallon Aqua Bottled Water saves es you from buying the more expensive water bottle ceramic and wooden stands and nozzless (Rp150,000 + nozzle) and they work just fine. *Your gardener/housekeeper can play a e crucial role in your acculturating and adapting to life in Bali as translator, language instructor, mediator and banjar go-between. *Now that the rainy season has started, check out the electrical system installed in your house for unbalanced electrical loads and unstable “dirty” electric currents. Also clean leaves and other organic debris from rain gutters and roof. *Stay healthy. *In descending order of preference for good health: a) olive oil; b) coconut oil; c) palm oil (except for red palm oil). *There are huge and time consuming problems if you have your meds sent via Fedex from the States. *If you want a medical prescription, Toya Clinic, Jl. Raya Pengosekan (East of Pom Bensin) in Ubud (tel. 0361-978-078) charges around Rp200,000; open 24 hours. *”Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich” is the way to remember Indonesia’s national health scheme BPJS except that you switch the “B” with a “P.” *Wash your vegetables before eating, but don’t soak them which loses water-soluble vitamins such Vitamin’s B and C. *Bali Pink Ribbon (www.balipinkribbon.com) gives free mastectomy bras and breast prostheses, breast support cushions following surgery and scarves and wigs for chemotherapy patients. Contact their Support Centre, Jl. Dewi Sri IV/1, Kuta; Naniek and Gloria tel. 0361-835-2299, hp 089-688-668-139. *Eucalyptus oil (kayuputih) is effective in keeping off mosquitoes. *Using local fruit varieties for tiered gebogan (offerings) is healthier and far cheaper than using imported fruits.
**Shopping. The best way to compare prices and find out what goods cost in the U.S. is t check Amazon.com, usually the best pricing of most things in the States. For example, the to F French Bonne Maman jams sold at Western-style supermarkets in Bali (such as Papaya) is lo lower priced than in the U.S. Other Bali bargains are the multivitamins (Fatigon Rp2000 per p packet of four tablets); Adidas (they have factories all over Indonesia); Spotify music download s (only Rp15,000/three months compared to $10.00 in U.S. *Mac products are more secure site a against viruses and don’t work with pirated software; buy at Global PC, Jl. Imam Bonjol 478, D Denpasar, tel. 0361-499-048. Please send your budget ideas, bargain deals and money saving tips to pakbill2003@yahoo.com. BA Feature Article SINGAPORE: The Little Red Dot with A Big Attitude by Peripatete You have a visa run coming up, and the best fare you can find will land you in Singapore. But, like many other expats living in Bali, you bemoan a trip to that city-state, a.k.a. The Little Red Dot. “There’s nothing to do in that city,” is a commonly heard refrain, “it’s just a concrete jungle.” If you count yourself among those who prefer to while away a day at Changi Airport, rather than exploring the lesser-known parts of this booming island nation (and not just because of the land reclamations), then perhaps it’s time to re-consider. As in: Consider spending a couple of days (or more) in Singapore. Fear not. Singapore is ready to serve you a tantalizing range of activities and sites, even for the most discerning (and jaded) repeat visitor. So don your rosiest colored shades and take a look at what the not-so Little Red Dot has in store for you. You’ve been to Little India, had your fill of aloo gobi and drunk your weight in chai; you might have even stocked up on stunning saris, Swiss chocolate and other souvenirs. But how much do you know about the people and community that make up Little India - beyond the imported goods and salespeople at Mustafa Centre? If you’re ready to scratch the surface and dig a little deeper, seek out the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC). Opened in 2015, the IHC features guided tours and exhibits covering colonial times until the present; engaging talks about the contributions of Indians to Singapore; musical events and film screenings. it’s also a perfect place for adults to relive the nostalgia of their childhood. Check the schedule for changing exhibitions, hands-on workshops and conversations with collectors. http://emint.com/ When you’re done entertaining your inner (or real) child, there’s a vast garden waiting to entertain you with its rather unusual displays.
If your tastes run to locally-produced dishes, head to the “premium grocery shopping destination” known as Pasarbella (http:// pasarbella.com), where you can discover some of the most creative and colorfully packaged food items – cooked, baked, honed and crafted by locals.
Originally established in 1937 as “Tiger Balm Gardens” by two Burmese brothers (and Tiger Balm creators, Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par), Haw Par Villa was envisioned as a communitybased park for informal learning about Chinese life, spirituality and culture. Life-size mythological creatures and statues (such as a Monkey King and Statue of Liberty), dominate the sprawling grounds, which some refer to as a “Buddhist amusement park.” Don’t leave this plein air museum without a look at the Ten Courts of Hell, where an extremely graphic depiction of Chinese and Buddhist notions of the hereafter awaits you - complete with gruesome scenes and spooky lighting. Go if you can stomach it – or have a hankering for a surreal display of 3D horror. http:// www.hawpar.com/about-us/heritage.html
Nothing says local more than wholesome food sourced from the ground beneath our feet.. and more so, if it’s within short driving distance. For a taste of “Paradise on Earth,” take a day trip out to Bollywood Veggies farm and the Poison Ivy Bistro, where you’ll feast on home-cooked cuisine conjured up from organic produce grown in their on-site garden. Located in the Kranji countryside, northwest of Singapore’s centre, this ten-acre sanctuary spills over with an abundance of homegrown vegetables and fruit; eggplants, bananas, pineapple and jackfruit – star ingredient of the tasty Jackfruit Lemak. Wrap up your visit with a stop at the Bollywood Food Museum, a great place to learn about the history of humanity’s interaction with food throughout history. (http://bollywoodveggies.com/)
If your tastes lean towards the more spiritually inspiring, a walk through the dense foliage of MacRitchie Forest leads you to the remains of Syonan Jinja, a Shinto shrine built during the Japanese occupation of 1942-1945. Even if you don’t find the remnants of the shrine, you can’t go wrong with a walk through one of Singapore’s many natural destinations. For history buffs, a sure bet is the Japanese Cemetery Park in the Hougang neighborhood. The largest Japanese cemetery in Southeast Asia comprises 910 tombstones that contain the remains of members of the wartime Japanese community in Singapore, including young Japanese prostitutes, civilians, soldiers and convicted war criminals executed in Changi Prison.
If your taste for film doesn’t run to Hindi-language gems, Bollywood hits or Hollywood blockbusters, unspool yourself at The Projector. Singapore’s new secret hipster cinema is tucked away inside the Golden Mile Tower, featuring films and events carefully curated by indie-oriented film-lovers: international film festivals, animated films, talks and more. Alcohol and snacks are available onsite. (http://theprojector.sg) From film to photography, the visual arts scene is flourishing all over Singapore. Some venues have pioneered an aesthetic reflecting their urban (and maritime) surroundings as much as their content. DECK is one such example. Creatively assembled out of abandoned shipping containers (retrofitted and stacked together like building blocks), the sleek but boxy-looking DECK is an independent art space launched in 2014. Featuring two photo galleries, artist’s space and a library containing one of the largest collections of photography books in Singapore, DECK nurtures a growing community of photography enthusiasts. The recently-held Open Deck art market, offering affordable arts & crafts, exquisite food and exciting workshops, is an annual event attended by a growing crowd of creatives. http://deck.sg/ If you’re looking for a quiet corner to work online, hold a Skype call, or meet up with other entrepreneurs like you, there’s no shortage of co-working spaces in Singapore: JustCo, Collision 8, The Hive, The Great Room and The Working Capital are just some of the cool and community gathering places where you can mix work, play, food and more – some even feature amazing views and perks. You’re in luck if you’re a budding businesswoman, because you can always book yourself a spot at Woolf Works. The name of Singapore’s first women-only co-working space was inspired by the words of legendary author Virginia Woolf, who pioneered the notion that women must have a room of their own. Get a day pass, wrap up that business plan and connect over a cup of tea, with like-minded female entrepreneurs, bloggers and part-time-working-moms. Even if you’re in Singapore, there’s no excuse not to balance a bit of the digital life with an exploration of culture and the outdoors. Even if you’ve been to the Asian Civilization Museum, the National Gallery, the Singapore Art Museum, Philatelic Museum and the uber-modernist, lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands, how about veering off that beaten track? Take the MINT (Moment of Imagination and Nostalgia with Toys) Museum of Toys. If you happen to be a diehard Batman fan, the MINT won’t disappoint; you’ll get a close-up look at the Batman Magic Slate Printing Plate, the only one known to exist in the world. Aside from containing the largest collection of Batman toys and collectables in the world, the MINT boasts the most extensive display of antique toys (more than 50,000!) in all of Southeast Asia - such as the Acrobat Tumbling Toy dating back to the 19th century. The displays of childhood memorabilia – including a set of Ukrainian dolls - span more than 40 countries worldwide, including Bulgaria and Germany. Opened in 2006, the privately held museum is not only a treasure-filled destination for children;
Southeast Asian country to be rated by the Michelin Guide.
The theme of Japanese history in Singapore continues high atop a hill in Sentosa. The Serapong Spur Battery Complex, built by the British army in the 19th century, was a defensive post with coastal artillery guns standing ready for a Japanese seaborne attack that never occurred. This now-abandoned and vine-covered fort once contained lookout posts, underground rooms and tunnels. Tip: Go for a panoramic view of the city.
Then again, if you’re pressed for time and like the idea of combining food + sightseeing in one go, nothing beats Singapore’s Makan Bus. (http://www.makanbus.com/) A culinary journey on wheels, the bus stops off in parts of the city you’re not likely to otherwise explore. You’ll feast on the best of local treats such as Duck Rice, Bak Chor Mee, Indian Rojak and Mee Rebus. Don’t pass up on the traditional Peranakan sweet known as Nonya Kueh! If your energy hasn’t waned, and your tastes run to high drama, seek out one of the many Chinese opera performances that take place at venues around Singapore. http://operaperformance. blogspot.co.id/.
What better way to dust off all that history than by reserving a seat in a very moving and cutting-edge experience? Nutonomy, newly launched in Singapore, is the world’s first ‘self-driving’ service featuring autonomous vehicles. Even though you won’t be handed the keys without a co-pilot and backup driver on board (at least for the trial stage), you can call up a free ride from the comfort of your phone. www.nutonomy.com Tribe offers nine unconventional privately guided tours in which participants can experience Singapore like a local. The itineraries of tours such as “Disappearing Trades” include exclusive peeks into a traditional bakery, factories for coffee-roasting and paperhouse making (offerings burnt for the deceased); and an introduction to the art of pouring teh-tarik (literally, “pulled tea”). http://tribe-tours.com/ If you’ve tired of walking around, how about taking a tour by Segway or a boat cruise? There’s a Hop-On-Hop-Off bus tour – and even an overnight mangrove kayak tour at Pulau Ubin. Rent a Scooter from Triposo or Viator, and catch the sights as you zip about on a set of wheels. http://www.triposo.com/ With all that physical activity, you’ll undoubtedly work up a voracious appetite. Rest assured that, food-wise, the Little Red Dot won’t disappoint. If you haven’t heard about Singapore’s food scene, brace yourself. Extending itself far beyond its traditional hawker centres, Chinese restaurants and kopitiam food courts – the city’s dining denizens are embracing a much more global and innovative eating-ethic. From sushi joints and vegan restaurants, to traditional Arabic fare and the elegant Angelina (a French-import) at the Capitol Piazza, the city is dotted with plenty of eateries to satiate even the most discriminating taste-buds. Which is why it’s such a surprise that the gastronomes at Michelin never woke up to smell the brew. Until now. The inaugural launch of the Michelin Guide Singapore was held in July 2016, when its first stars were awarded to renowned local institutions such as the Joël Robuchon Restaurant at Sentosa. Singapore is the first
But if you’d like nothing more than to wind down, what better way than with a late-night massage or spa treatment to lull you into a blissful state of relaxation. Night owls, you’re in luck: Le Spa (www.lespa.com.sg) and Tang Dynasty (www.tangdynastyspa. com) are both open until 6 a.m., offering 60-minute massages through the wee hours of the night. For those seeking the ultimate novelty, lean back into a plush sofa bed at Rule of Thumb (www. ruleofthumb.sg), where you can indulge in a pedicure while watching a movie. If you’re still not convinced about all that Singapore has to offer, why not speak to an expat herself? Head over to one of the regular Expat Fairs taking place at venues all around town to swap stories and ask for leads. http://theexpatfairs.com/. When all else fails, you’ll always have Orchard Road. Note: As of June 2016, disabled visitors and their primary caregivers are offered free or subsidized admission fees to all NHB museums and heritage institutions. For more information, visit http://www.nhb.gov.sg. WHERE TO STAY At $35 for a dorm bed at Gusti Bed & Breakfast, this off-thebeaten track hostel features AC in each room, shared bathrooms & toilets. Free breakfast, wifi and lockers are part of the package; all this just a short walk from the Lavender MRT. (www.gustibnb. com) Budget-minded options include The Pod “boutique capsule hotel” (a.k.a. hostel), a relaxed and funky outfit on Beach Road (http:// thepod.sg/), a stone’s throw from Arab Street and Haji Lane, with pods – including lots of freebies - starting from $39. Value Hotel (comprised of 3 hotels on Balestier Rd) is an option if location is not your top priority. Rooms start at $67. (www. valuehotel.com.sg) Lloyd’s Inn is a sleek and contemporary urban resort, informed by clean and minimalist lines. Centrally located on a residential street close to Orchard Road, rooms start at $160. (http://lloydsinn. com/)

Water Conservation in the Garden ‘We have just bought a block of land up in the hills at Jimbaran where we plan to build our own little piece of paradise. Because the land has been cleared we have a blank canvas to work with but from the outset I would like to maintain a low-maintenance garden if that makes any sense? Do you have any ideas for saving water or which plants or planting techniques that I can use to ensure that I am not out there watering or wasting scarce water all of the time. Thanking you in advance for your suggestions. Regards Roger. Maintaining a low-maintenance garden indeed makes perfect sense!
By adopting efficient gardening practices we can do our bit to help conserve this precious water resource and also reduce our time out in the garden watering at the same time. Conserving water in the home and garden is a start but larger scale measures that involve the tourism industry will ultimately need to be adopted to avert the coming water crisis in Bali. It is important that we all raise awareness of this coming challenge so that we can all do our best to conserve this precious resource. Know your garden and care for it. The best place to start for a water efficient garden is to utilise plants in the landscape that already grow well in the local environment off natural rainfall alone. You can easily utilise a variety of trees for shade, flowers, and colourful foliage type plants that are attractive and will do well on minimal water once established. Think of the many varieties of palms, frangipani, bougainvillea, hibiscus, heliconia, bromeliads, croton, aloe vera and other succulents.
Fresh water is rapidly becoming a scarce resource here in Bali. A lack of foresight in planning has led to unsustainable use of Bali’s groundwater aquifers - particularly in the southern areas such as Kuta, Kerobokan, Denpasar, Nusa Dua and the Bukit. There has been a water crisis looming for years as rampant overdevelopment closely associated with the growth of tourism has outstripped the capacity of water resources to keep up. Tapping groundwater with wells is unsustainable at present whereby it is being used up at a faster rate than it can be replenished. Recent reports put the capacity of Bali’s groundwater aquifer supplies at around 15-20%.
Efficient Watering. A common mistake is overwatering plants. You would be surprised just how long some plants will last without water. If your plants are looking wilted and in need of a good drink it is much better to give them a good soaking at infrequent intervals to encourage deeper root growth into the soil. Frequent watering will result in shallow root systems as plants will have no incentive to search deeper for moisture. This will have negative consequences in terms of the ability to draw up nutrients but also easily cause stress in dry conditions. Watering either in the early morning or evening is best as it avoids water loss due to evaporation from the sun and transpiration by plants. The soil should be watered, not the leaves. Consistently watering foliage will encourage fungus, mildew and other pests.
Often wells are drilled on the cheap, at low cost, without proper casings or not up to environmental standards. All of this invariably leads to cross contamination from land based storm water runoff from urban areas, raw sewerage and even chemical by-products from farming such as fertilisers and pesticides. Wells drilled close to coastal areas also run the risk of salt water intrusion. If you could take a cross section of the subterranean ground in the south, with all of the historical drilling that has taken place over the years it may well look more like Swiss cheese than solid rock!
Enrich your soil with mulch, add compost. Bare and exposed soil will dry out very quickly. Mulching your soil will recycle nutrients back into the soil, discourage weeds, and lock the moisture in. Compost integrated into the soil will provide food for plants and improve water retention in the soil. Consider your lawn. Limit the area of land devoted to growing grass. Wash your car or motorbike on the lawn to water and fertilise the grass at the same time. The detergents contain phosphates similar to many fertilisers. Only water your lawn when it needs it, a good soaking every now and then is preferable to frequent, light watering, encouraging deeper
roots, giving you a more drought resistant lawn. Use grey water. Instead of running your washing machine outlet hose into the drain you could place it into a large bucket and pour the water onto your pot plants or outside into the garden. If you can find some suitable hose sizes at the hardware store, attach some extensions to your washing machine outlet hose and run the grey water directly out onto the garden. That way every time you wash your clothes the water is not going to waste or needlessly filling up the sewers, rivers and oceans. Grey water will contain phosphates which are better off in the garden rather than the waterways. If you are really keen on conserving you could undo the s-bend under your sink and allow dish water to likewise drain into a bucket that can then be distributed around ornamental plants. Just remember to empty the bucket before it overflows! Pay attention to the seasons. If it is hot and dry for long periods, then you will have to water more often. In times of frequent rain, you may not need to water at all. Through the seasons, as the climate changes from hot to cool, or wet to dry you will need to adjust watering requirements accordingly. Other considerations. Use good quality hose fittings. Ensure taps, fittings and hoses are not leaking. A dripping tap can waste up to 15 litres of water a day, sometimes more. To check for leaks, turn off every tap and appliance that uses water then read the water meter. Wait 3 hours and read again. If the meter has ticked over, there’s a leak somewhere. Rainwater Tanks. If you can afford it have rainwater tanks installed, this is the best long term solution for water conservation in the garden in combination with plant selection and efficient watering practices. Happy New Year Gardening!

While this is heating put the egg yolks in a medium sized bowl and beat them with the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, salt, the remaining 3/4 cup palm sugar and the remaining 1 cup of cream. Beat well with a whisk so the sugar starts to melt. Take the hot cream mixture from the heat. Ladle out about 1/2 cup of the hot cream and add it slowly, while stirring constantly, to the egg yolk mixture. It’s important not to add it too quickly or the egg yolks will lump. Now slowly add the egg yolk mixture back into the cream stirring constantly, over a medium heat. Cook until the mixture thickens and coats the spoon when withdrawn from the pot. Be careful not to boil or it can curdle. This will take about 5 minutes. Strain this into a bowl that is sitting in an ice bath. Once it’s cold, add the pumpkin vanilla puree and whisk until smooth. Put the ice cream mixture in the fridge over night or longer. Follow your ice cream machine instructions to churn it into a divine dessert. If you are doing it by hand, put the mixture into a shallow bowl in the freezer for 45 minutes and then stir vigorously. Repeat every 45 minutes until frozen. Read the article mentioned above or Google ‘making ice cream manually’. Happy Holidays!

27 Wolfgang Widmoser, one of Ubud’s most brilliant living artists, was born in Munich, Germany in 1954. His father, a gifted architect and painter, always supported his son’s aspirations. Wolfgang painted, played music and studied architecture and philosophy since childhood. After finishing high school in 1973, Wolfgang went on to study under Ernst Fuchs and Salvador Dali where he learned the techniques of the Old Masters and the intricacies of rendering dreams. In 1984, he visited Indonesia for the first time. In 2007, he opened his Venus Rising exhibit of the female form at Bentara Budaya in Jakarta. Today, Wolfgang and his family make their home in Ubud. He is currently designing New Age villages and working on a series of paintings of rice farmers.

How important is it for art students to first master the fundamentals of drawing? For a realist painter, developing drawing skills is crucial. But drawing is also an art form in itself in which the artist develops his or her own style. For example, he may employ edgy or smooth charcoal lines on white paper. However, for an abstract painter or for a child, learning how to draw first might be an obstacle because their art is more spontaneous. Their work follows an invisible pattern, creating a new reality instead of representing one.
Is the human body difficult to paint? Anything can be painted. Everything is infinitely beautiful a shell, a glass ball, a banana, a face, a lake in the early morning sun. You just have to take the time and really look at the object. It’s all there and it’s all obvious – light, shadow, structure. You cannot paint something that you cannot see.
What techniques have you pioneered? My work with glazes. It was my great fortune to study with Fuchs in Vienna who redeveloped the ancient technique of oil glazes. This old European technique for layering colored transparencies allows the original colors to appear to the human eye as they would be in nature. The resulting work’s rich and shining quality derives not from pigment but from natural light. Even the great master manipulator of reality Salvador Dali did not fully understand the power of glazes.
How did you get your love of the abstract? Around 1992, I discovered photos of Papua New Guinea warriors with their fascinating painted bodies. I transformed their faces to give them archetypal character. My series of large formatted canvases, combining the archaic with the futuristic, evolved out of this discovery. I also created familiar objects such as glasses, faces and natural objects into forms that twist and stretch far beyond the normal scope of the eye. I then painted the objects with painterly exactitude, changing their reality. I call this approach ‘fantastic realism.’ In these works, I’m intensifying the image. Pushing the shape of forms is the prerogative of the painter. I attempt to make the viewer see objects differently in order to discover their inner beauty.
What do you mean by the term ‘Abstract Realism’? To me all painting is abstract - just colored shapes on canvas. From my palette I can create strange illusory landscapes – cracks like the brushstrokes of a Zen master, pink rivers, green shady valleys, dragon lakes in the desert and thick blobs of color painted flat with shadows and glancing light. Even in a lily pond, the whole world is present. There’s growth and decay. Life oozes out of the water. The sky and even remote galaxies are reflected on its surface. The sun can be seen in every shiny dewdrop of a flower blossom.
SERVO MOTOR CONTROL AC AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATOR
SINAR KENCANA
Do you practice different styles of painting? In the 1970s I was really into still lifes, a world of objects and their inter-relationships that formed complex compositions. My studies about projective geometry led me to introduce curved mirrors that reflected objects in surprising ways and made me realize how truly elegant the universe is. In 1980, I moved to Tuscany and took up landscape painting. I found that atmospheric effects crystallized into intense portraits of nature, one of my favorite themes to this day. In the 1990s, my latent passion for architecture broke to the surface.

What is the difference between photography and painting? Before photography painting served the purpose of reporting reality. Art was commissioned by the state or the church and represented the official view of reality. But starting with Giotto, painters began to concern themselves not just with reality but also with their interpretation of reality. Take for example Rembrandt’s Night Watch, which is first and foremost a Rembrandt and second a painting of his patrons. Caravaggio painted the Madonna with the face of his maid to give her expressiveness. With Impressionism, the painter’s vision became the subject itself.
What are your thoughts on architecture? Architecture is a tremendous chance to enhance the environment. Architecture worships Nature, the omnipresent and serene Mother who lavishly nurtures her children. We all want to go back to the Garden of Eden and create a beautiful home in order to enjoy the blessings of Nature. I’ve always dreamed about elegant cities for human beings with free flowing buildings and flower-like rooflines. Bamboo structures have these qualities and in combination with tensile roofs are also very practical. I’ve been inspired by the tensile structures of Frei Otto and the lightweight engineering of Buckminster Fuller. I’ve already realized several sculptural and organic sets of shapes in Europe and Indonesia, a unification of landscape and city.

What is the function of art? Since the cave paintings, man has developed art in an attempt to understand the world around him and find out how everything works. Magic, art, technology and religion were once all the same. Only relatively late in our history did they split into different categories. Art is an open system that changes with time as we discover new perspectives. Art is true and convincing if it is effectively expressive and sees things in a new way. This gives art great freedom. Religion, at least in its established forms, declares that it has found the answers and therefore tends to be in conflict with other explanations about the origin and meaning of life. If there’s no God, I am sure an artist would invent one.
C/Bm/I-03 Feb 16
What is your philosophy of art? It is best summed up in my motto – aesthetics = ethics. This is a new version of the German concept of or “total work of art.” Plato asserts that the Good, the True and the Beautiful are the highest values. I agree.

RIDING BALI
Just 30 minutes north of Ubud in the little village of Pupuan in Tegalalang, a project that rescues neglected horses has become a great little tourism operation - and an opportunity to ride through some of the island’s most spectacular scenery. For the beginner, the one hour tour proceeds at a slow and gentle pace, setting out from a very traditional and natural Balinese compound on a ride that passes through tropical forest, rivers, and scenic rice paddies. You take a break to sip on a fresh coconut in the middle of the rice fields near Pura Dalem (Lord Siva’s temple), before heading back to the stables. It’s been an interesting journey for manager Dewa and his partner Danu, whose young adult staff from local farms have little formal education. Dewa wrote some “standard operating procedures” and all the groomers/ guides have now learnt to speak English, with volunteers coming from US, Russia, Spain and Netherlands to help train both horses and staff. Email ubudstables@gmail.com / call 0813 3958 5666 re tours (1, 2, 2.5 and 3 hours) and prices. Www.ubudhorsestables.com has information about the rescue of Cola and Mirah.
COLLAGES - WOMEN’S LIVES
Hats off to Roam Ubud, for providing the perfect creative venue for Jakarta icon Ika Vantiani, as she took her students through one of the last of her incredible workshop series, Kata Untuk Perempuan (Word for Woman). The Word for Women project is documenting women in their daily lives through handmade collages, using paper scraps, used stamps, and local women magazines from the past and present. The artworks are posted at the project Instagram account @ katauntukperempuan and will later be selected and displayed within a printed publication. The project started as one of the events of the “WANITA: Female Artivism Jakarta” project in Footscray Community Art Center in Melbourne, Australia in October 2015, and took one year from December 2015 to December 2016 to complete, finishing with this Pasar Prakarya-sponsored event on December 22, the Indonesian Mother’s Day! It’s so exciting that we’ve finally persuaded Mbak Ika to bring Ubud this workshop that has inspired so many in other parts of Indonesia. Follow the extraordinary Ika Vantiani on Facebook, Flickr and Instagram.
NYEPI, CULTURE & VOLCANOES
Obviously, the Balinese know the dates for each upcoming Nyepi, but this important “day of silence” Hindu festival, often seems to take expats (and certainly tourists) by surprise. For our Hindu hosts, the days leading up to Nyepi are full of drama, colour, and celebration, including ceremonies at tiny village temples, excursions to cast offerings into the sea, trips up the mountains to pray at grand temples, and of course dazzling ogoh-ogoh (paper cache monster) parades on Nyepi Eve. I’ve always recommended visitors to wander through the backstreets of Ubud and surrounding villages during the preceding weeks, to see the village craftsmen bring their giant ogoh-ogoh to life. This year, you can do one better, joining photographers Mark Rayner and David Metcalf as they tour Bali and the Hindu parts of Lombok, through the eight nights and nine days before Nyepi. For any tourist with an eye for photography, and even professional photographers, this is a chance to capture some great shots. March 22 – 30; for more info: davidmetcalf3@ mac.com/ 0881 1131 255.
Monica Meilin brings her extraordinary wealth of experience to “Movement for the People”, a contemporary dance and creative movement class. Movement for the People is every Monday and Wednesday 9-10:30am, no prior training required, beginners welcome! Or you can try non-choreographed dance sessions (not a class) on Wednesday evenings, 7-9pm in Deep Dive Dance with Tara. Both at Paradiso, on Jalan Gautama South. Then there’s Ecstatic Dance every Friday evening at 7.30pm, and Sunday Dance at Yoga Barn at 11am (you need to get there an hour earlier to ensure your place to that one). And then there’s salsa classes at Cafe Havana and Ubud Studio. And many, many more exciting places. Check out the relevant websites for more info. ELOQUENT FILM NIGHTS Every two weeks, Taksu Photo Gallery on Jl Monkey Forest brings us some extraordinary movies, with unsurprisingly - an emphasis on the quality of their photography. The powerful last for 2016, Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops) portrayed the 1970s struggle of 10 students to support their village on Belitung, a tiny farming and tin mining island off the east coast of Sumatra. On January 12, The Bamboo Path documentary will investigate the projects of people who work with bamboo in different ways, in places as far apart as Ubud’s Green School and rural Mexico.

On January 26 we’ll see “What Remains The Life and Work of Sally Mann”. She was one of America’s greatest black and white photographers, her work still influencing photographers today. “What Remains” is a rare glimpse of an eloquent and brilliant artist. Check out Taksu Photo Gallery’s Facebook page for more on all of these and on February 9’s film: DamNation. You can find the gallery at 11a Jalan Monkey Forest. Films start at 7pm. Entry by donation (for different causes), free popcorn! FRAUD ALERT Of course, frauds are everywhere, but I swear that people do less of the normal checking up when they are on holiday, than they do at home. Ex-pats and tourists “buy” land, form partnerships and set up business deals with none of the checks they’d make in their own home town - even if setting up with a family member! Online is notorious for fraud. Be alert to a scam artist called Fi Queen on Ubud Community page (and elsewhere) on Facebook. She seems to pop up with a “friend” who can sell you a car, iPhone or piece of land, in response to many FB queries. Her latest is offering great prices on airline flights, taking the money and not delivering the ticket.

‘Mostly Jazz’ (8 and 22 January) Two evenings in January worth noting for some relaxation and enjoyment with jazz and more jazz. We really have the African American communities of New Orleans particularly since the 1920s to thank for some extraordinary sounds. The deep voice of Louis Armstrong and the expression of George Gershwin just spring to mind at the very mention of jazz. Different cultures have experienced their own styles but it is one of America’s original art forms. Jazz has its roots in West African culture and music and in African American music traditions and has developed its own distinctive style in many different parts of the world. It is definitely a part of the world on my bucket list the Southern American States. However, no need to travel that far only to Sanur to appreciate the jazz sounds of the Deep South. I think that what is one the many exciting things about Bali is the diverse music scene and jazz lovers are in for a real treat. The first evening features Endah Widiastuti (vocal and guitar) and Rhesa Aditya (bass) who began their duo in 2003. Folk, jazz, blues, rock and roll and ballards are part of their wide variety of musical sounds. Angga Puradiredia hailing from Jakarta will perform on the second evening equally as talented. Both evenings are going to be a phenomenal success. The evening includes the show, dinner and a drink. Do call to reserve a table. When Cost Where Contact

Skream (6 January) It is great to see another international talent visit Bali. Oliver Dene Jones is known as Skream, an English electronic music producer based in Croydon. Skream was an early and influential part of the dubstep genre. In case readers are not aware of this type of music it is simply a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London, England. It began in the late 1990s related to garage and techno to mention just two kinds of this music. For readers who appreciate this type of music then this event is definitely not to be missed. Yoga (January) I thought I had better schedule some more health activities after Christmas and New Year. Did you know that the typical British person consumes on average 6,000 calories on Christmas day according to various newspaper sources. I am sure readers who enjoy the typical dinner with trimmings and all the goodies on offer at Christmas aren’t far behind. It is no wonder then that people resort to detoxing and diets. Yoga is another way to soothe the mind, body and soul after such indulgences and Desi Seni have their whole schedule for January lined up. The programme caters to all levels and is led by a team of passionate and qualified teachers. Desa Seni are offering opportunities for the local community and scholarships for those in need. It is always great to see such solid support for the community and helping and supporting the community starts immediately. The website below has a complete list of classes and times as well as other workshops and events happening. A Salute to those who left us in 2016
It’s that time of year when we take stock of the year that‘s gone, before releasing it as we move into the New Year. Part of the process is to note the passing of the notable figures who have meant something to us.
We start the roll of the departed with six who left a big mark, each in their own way. David Bowie: English singer, songwriter & actor, b.1947 d. 10 Jan, age 69; was a dominating figure in popular music for five decades. Leaving art school in 1963 he had his first hit with “Space Oddity” (1969). In 1972 he emerged as the glamrock Ziggy Stardust. His career was one of constant reinvention through Soul & Funk, Berlin and Krautrock, the hard-rockin’ Tin Machine into an electronic period, settling into neo-classicist Bowie mode. He had a considerable film career acting in over two-dozen movies. He married USSomali model Iman in 1992 and was a frequent visitor to Bali. Muhammad Ali: US heavyweight boxer, b.1942 as Cassius Clay, d. June (74); is considered the greatest heavyweight boxer of all. He won the gold medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics and went professional defeating Sonny Liston for the World Title in 1964. Shortly after he converted to Islam changing his name to Muhammad Ali. Refusing to serve in Vietnam he was stripped of his title in 1967 and did not fight again for 4 years. Three-time world heavyweight champion winning (1964, 1974 & 1978) Ali fought some truly great fights; first against Liston, three against Joe Frazier and the “Rumble in the Jungle” with George Foreman. King Bhumipol of Thailand, b.1927 d. Oct.(88): succeeding 1946 he became the world’s longest-serving Head of State reigning for 70 years. Via skilful PR he restored the Thai monarchy, becoming much loved and revered by the Thai people. His standing allowed him to intervene successfully at key moments in the country’s volatile politics. His son and successor who does not enjoy such standing arouses concern for the future stability of the country. John Glenn, US Astronaut & Senator, b.1921, d. Dec.(95); In 1962 Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. His combination of “Right Stuff” and feat in orbiting the Earth three times put the US back on top in the Space Race ensuring his place as the most well-known of US astronauts. After NASA he served as Democrat Senator for Ohio from 1974-99. Fidel Castro, Cuban revolutionary & Marxist dictator, b.1926 d. Nov (90): son of a wealthy landowner, Castro became radicalized as a student at Havana University. From 1953 to 1959 he led the uprising that ousted US-supported Batista dictatorship. Dedicated to the overthrow of capitalist regimes in Latin America and Africa, Castro faced down US invasion, becoming a firm ally of the USSR in the process. It almost led to nuclear war with the Cuban Missile Crisis (1961). Zsa Zsa Gabor, Actress b.1917 d. Dec. (99): a former Miss Hungary 1936, the Hungarian-US actress cum socialite was known more for her beauty and extravagant lifestyle, as well as her nine husbands – than for her acting. Husbands included hotelier, Conrad Hilton, actor George Sanders and lastly, a royal prince. She was a Hollywood original - famous for being famous.
Adding an enigmatic and haunting remembrance: Raoul Wallenstein, Swedish diplomat, b.1912: finally declared dead by the Swedish tax authorities on 26 October, 2016 - 104 hundred years after his birth and 71 years after he disappeared into Soviet captivity. He is said to have been shot by the Russians in the 1952, accused of being a spy. Wallenberg was responsible for saving tens of thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary in 1944. Dining with Royalty! You see them in period movies. You read about them in books. Grand old homes that have foyers larger than a normal house, twin staircases spiraling u p w a r d s around a chandelier that hangs from the ceiling. A grand piano sits on the side of the room. They are old fashioned mansions. A new version of same is The Mansion, in Sayan, just outside of Ubud. It is a grand home set in magic landscaped grounds. At their restaurant off to the left of the foyer, Indochine, you are in the stately dining room, the well spaced tables offering both privacy and garden views. You can pretend that you are dining with friends in your own grand mansion! Although just outside is a pleasant terrace beside an ornamental swimming pool, which is where I prefer to dine. Vietnamese is the main cuisine, although there are French and general International offerings as well. Goi Cuon has become very popular in Bali with many cafes and restaurants doing their own particular versions. They are normally just referred to as Vietnamese Spring Rolls, and are fresh rice paper wrapped around an assortment of fillings. Some even have the correct nuoc nam [Vietnamese fish sauce] dipping accompaniment. At Indochine they are presented very differently; the roll is laid out across the plate and stuffed with a combination of chicken, prawn, lettuce, bean shoots and herbs, covered with nuoc nam and sprinkled with crushed peanuts. Unlike the café versions this one requires a knife and fork, rather than being finger food. Yes, like most Asian cuisines there are Spring Rolls [Cha Gio] but the Vietnamese variety are quite different from the rest, small crisp thin rice paper casings are stuffed with minced chicken and mushroom, bite off the end and fill them with the traditional nuoc nam sauce. So different to the thick case tasteless lumpia served at local warungs even though both are referred to as ‘spring rolls’. Bahn Cuon is a similar roll that has been steamed, and is closer to what is generally seen around Bali cafes that have a few Viet offerings on their menu. The filling is ground pork, ear mushrooms, carrot and coriander. Goi Cuon Nem is similar but accompanied by a spicy peanut sauce. Banh Xeo [pictured] is on the mains menu but we often order as one of our entrees and share it, it is called a Vietnamese

Salad can be a Duck [with egg wedges and a tangy dressing] and an Indochine special of thin crisp pastry topped with chicken, bean sprouts, long bean, bean curd and tofu. Naturally that Vietnamese classic, Pho Noodle [normally with beef but can be served here with chicken as an option] is on the menu, with the condiments served alongside so you can control the intensity of taste. For seafood options, the Tiger Prawns are grilled, the Dory Fillet served in a green curry whilst the Tasmanian Salmon is with crispy butter rice and hollandaise sauce. The Rack of Lamb has been roasted in the oven. The Pork Chops are first marinated in honey and garlic before grilling, then served Vietnamese style, sauce and rice. Honey is also used to glaze the Ribs [pork, baby back] before being barbecued. Steaks can be Fillet Mignon or Sirloin, although beef is also served as Bourguignon, a slow-cooked beef casserole using tenderloin. The same cut is used, in strips, combined with mushrooms, for their Beef Stroganoff. Duck is presented Ubud style. Cooking is a two stage process, first steamed with spices under pressure, then fried till crisp. Chicken is offered many ways; with Kashmiri butter sauce cooked Biryani style with rice, Roasted with 5 spices, Caramelised with lemongrass [Vietnamese], in Red Curry on the Indonesian section of the menu but sounding more Thai or Cajun, with linguini or in a Vol-au-Vent with basil cream.
Reviews that appear in Bali Advertiser are based on actual visits to the establishments listed, without the knowledge of the restaurants, and are not paid for by the individual restaurants.
A variety of desserts finish off this dining experience. It can be that Asian special of Fried Ice Cream, International offerings of Creme Brulee, Crème Caramel or a local Pandan Crepe stuffed with shredded coconut and palm sugar,
Opinions expressed here are those of Gerry Williams and not necessarily those of Bali Advertiser. Gerry Williams attempts to write from a ‘typical’ diner’s perspective and, whilst quality of food is the most important criteria overall, value for money is the real measuring stick.
Very refined dining!

Hujan Locale, Jln. Sri Wedari, Ubud is a touch of class in Ubud’s central district. It is a part of the Sarong Group, made famous by Asia’s no. 1 exploring chef, Will Meyrick. Hujan Locale has gone through a minor re-positioning, it now presents fine dining Indonesian cuisine rather than the general Asian that it opened with. Downstairs is now a comfortable lounge and bar area, serving snacks. Whilst upstairs is now the dining area. You can start with a Dutch-Indonesian style Salted Cod Kroket [pictured], with chilli mayonnaise and chilli sambal, based on the popular Dutch Bitterballen. Buntut Goreng is fried ox-tail with sambal hijau and emping melinjo. Crispy Squid is with chilli jam, ginger flower and lemongrass. The Tuna Tartar is with watermelon, Thai basil, flat leaf coriander and sesame seeds, a chilli, shallot and lime dressing. One starter seen at every Will Meyrick restaurant is one that is served on a Betal Leaf, very Thai and a perfect start to any meal. The Hajun special is with prawn, heritage black pudding, fern tip, long bean and shredded coconut. Mains include Salt-grilled Whole Fish with sambal matah, lemon and kemangi, Beef Rendang braised in coconut milk with those Sumatran spices or Beef that has been stir-fried with back bean, snow peas, asparagus, ginger and green shallot. The Crispy Calamari is with squid-ink rice, coriander aioli and salt fish chilli flakes. A favourite side dish to order is the Jagung Bakar, grilled corn with ikan asin butter, pork floss and andaliman butter. In answer to the repeated requests by the many Bali visitors who suffer from Coeliac disease, Hajun Locale now offers a special guaranteed gluten-free menu. For those with no food allergies there is the full menu to explore.

Grow is the new restaurant at the L Hotel, Jln. Petitenget, Kerobokan. The main area takes over from what was Lola but a street frontage has been added. Singapore’s International chef Ryan Clift has taken over the F&B operation at L Hotel to expand on his popular Tippling Club operation in Singapore. In Early 2017 what was the Luna Rooftop will become Grow Up. Ryan’s fame in Singapore has been with his clever use of local ingredients, a sample menu from his Tippling club starts with Petuna Ocean Trout, beetroot, smoked ox tongue, Scallops in a purple Brittany garlic soup, John Dory with roasted cauliflower puree with fermented & fried cauliflower and masala veloute, Lamb with confit pearl onions, lamb bacon, mint and onion puree, Cheese Pastry and Tonka Bean Ganache, fingerlime rum-braised banana. We can expect something similar at GROW. Manisan recently opened in Ubud, at the extended Alaya Hotel, on Jln. Hanoman, Padang Tegal. Manisan has no connection whatsoever with Will Meyrick’s Mamasan. Manisan offers traditional Indonesian cuisine. Alaya’s main restaurant, Petani, has always offered a selection of quite exceptional local Balinese dishes amongst its essential International menu. Now at the adjoining Manisan it is pure Indonesian with an unusual menu design. Entrees can be Udang Tangkap - Aceh - Deep fried marinated prawns, Tuna Naniura Batak - North Sumatra - Batak spiced ceviche. Fresh raw tuna marinated in spices, turmeric, kaffir lime, and Sumatran andaliman szechuan pepper on banana leaves. Or Ayam Pongpongan - Bali - Smoked chicken fillet in sweet coconut husk tossed with chili shallot. Mains are only Grilled items [with your choice of sauce] or Sates with choice of sambal. Moon Rabbit has opened on Jln. Petitenget. It specialises in the ‘snack’ end of Chinese cuisine. Dim Sum can be steamed [Har Gow] or deep-fried [guo tie]. There are a few noodle dishes [Shanghai noodle with roasted prok belly], Soups [bak kut the – spiced pork ribs in broth] or Congee [plain, chicken or fish] and many rice dishes [Hainan Chicken, Kung Pao or Sticky Garlic Chicken, Shrimp with Salted Egg, etc]. LingLing, next door to Moon Rabbit on Raya Petitenget also sounds Chinese, however it is mainly Korean/Japanese. There seems to be a flood of ‘Chinese’ or Asian restaurants opening in the area, maybe trying to copy the instant success of neighbour Happy Chappy with its very traditional Cantonese, so far none have quite succeeded. Ling Ling offers Korean [Kim Chi Chips, Bulgogi], Japanese [Yakitori, Gyoza] and a few international [Butter Fish Carpaccio, American Sliders] dishes. However as with others in this area the accent appears to be on the cocktail set.

Alkhajanah is a self-styled Arabian restaurant, located on The ByPass, Sanur side of Kuta. In fact its very large menu includes items from the cuisines of many different Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries. Warag Enag is rice wrapped in vine leaves, similar to the Greek Dolmades. Pure Greek is the Moussaka. Arayes is grilled pita bread [looking like Belgian Waffles] stuffed with minced meat. The weirdly-named ‘Hawaiian Egyptian’ is the same stuffed with minced lamb, tomato and onion. Moroccan Bastilla is spiced chicken in pastry, whilst Sambosa are pastry triangles stuffed with either cheese or minced lamb. Shakshuka is a popular breakfast dish of scrambled egg tossed with tomato and capsicum pieces [they open at 9.00 a.m. every morning]. Shawarma can be chicken or lamb, shaved meat from the spit, a dish that has become very popular throughout western Europe. The Arabian Mandhi is marinated spiced rice cooked with pieces of either lamb or chicken. In true Arab tradition you can order a full [half or quarter] lamb carcass, that has been roasted over charcoal. It can be prepared many ways; Mandhi, Kabsah, Kabli or Biryani, with Madghout rice.
Casa d’Angelo’s is a bakery and two cafes. The bakery and 1st cafe is to be found at Jln. Gunung Salak Utara, Kerobokan. Difficult to find for the first time the location is well known to the local expats who flock there. Weeknights they offer a cooked dinner for a meager Rp.65,000 and at weekends an all-you-can-eat Brunch, Rp.70,000 [7.00 a.m. to 2.30 p.m]. Their small coffee shop at The Grand Lucky Supermarket in Sunset Road is a popular stopping off spot for a cup of their great Molinari coffee. Massimo’s of Sanur celebrate an old Italian custom, ‘Befana or Epifania’, on Friiday evening, January 6 [the ‘other’ Christmas day]. Custom has it that a very old and ugly lady dressed in black drops the final Christmas present into the children’s socks [your kids will love it]. Different Stations [hot, cold, grill and dessert] are set up all around the restaurant and grounds from where you can sample a vast array of that special Massimo cuisine. This year there is no set price, as all will be charged a la carte. Bookings are essential. [Tel: 288.942] NC/NV/U-9 Nov 16

37 Messing About in Boats We have a lovely friend, a former media colleague who goes by the pen name of Global Goddess. She has a tough life, poor thing. She’s forever flitting off from Brisbane, her home city, to go to distant places and write about them. Well, someone has to do it, we suppose. Her most recent gambol was a cruise to Komodo aboard the Al-Iikai, a 37-metre Bugis pinisi fitted out for maximum comfort and operated by Indonesia Yacht Sail from Benoa. It was, she tells us, a program that gave her plenty of stories about messing about in boats. The goddess, real name Christine Retschlag, apparently didn’t read Kenneth Grahame’s marvellous fantasy tale Wind in the Willows as a child. But we’re sure that Ratty will forgive her, given her later experiences. Hector, who is one of Ratty’s firmest friends, will pay close attention to her trip reports on her blog and in the travel media. We’re sure that Ratty – whose ancestral lineage, we remember, traced back to a seafaring rat who had sailed to England from Constantinople long before (though possibly not as early as the Black Death fleets of 1348-49) – will fully understand that the Bali Sea and beyond is a different kettle of fish to the somewhat placid Thames in the golden age of Edwardian England more than a century ago. The goddess finished her archipelagic sojourn with some lovely down-days at Palms Ceningan, where we hear she adopted surfer-chick hair because she had lost her comb. She’ll have found it eventually in the designer Black Void handbag that she, like all the girls, simply has to tote around. Before Indonesia, she had been in Canada chatting up polar bears. As a result of this earlier adventure, and when we caught up with her aboard the Al-Iikai at Benoa before she sailed away to joust with dragons, courtesy of Indonesia Island Sail’s Amanda Zsebik, we dubbed her Nanook of the Near North. That’s no igloo, just the smile.
What a Blast It’s over now, for another year, thank goodness. But Christmas is worth discussion. It marks the requisitioned and wholly notional birthdate of Jesus the Nazarene, who in the Christian rite is the Messiah, the prince of peace, Son of God, prophet and prince of life, among other things. Nothing in his story seems to mandate explosive exclamation, except perhaps the feeding of the five thousand, which must have been a blast. So it is curious that in Indonesia it’s apparently an occasion for letting off fireworks. From the noise these infernal objects generate, they must be rather bigger than the two inches (three centimetres) maximum allowed by official order. Never mind, no one here takes any notice of official orders. There’s s serious point in this. Christmas is a Christian religious feast. For Muslims, it is the birthday of the Messiah (Mahdi), Isa – Jesus – who ranks behind only Muhammad as a prophet of Allah. It is the secular West that has turned Christmas into an occasion for consumer excess. But even there, and in the little pockets of bad behaviour its acolytes occupy around the globe, pyrotechnics don’t figure in the events of the season.
A Sari Tale The other day we came across a delightful Jakarta-based blog (www.eatlivetravel.com) that had somehow previously escaped our notice. We really should get out more. It comes with an emailed newsletter, to which we have now subscribed. Interesting takes on current events are always good value, whether they are serious or of the ROFL class. Hereabouts they’re often of the ROFLMAO variant. What caught our eye particularly in the newsletter we saw on Dec. 17 was a spin-off from the awful Ahok saga. It involved Sari Roti, a bread maker, whose products were seen in apparently invidious proximity to the governor of Jakarta in the context of his legal difficulties with the FMP (the Fanatical Muslim Push). Sari Roti’s stock value had fallen as a result (no, we’re not kidding). No one can have missed the fact that Governor Ahok is on trial for blasphemy on the grounds that he misquoted the Qur’an and is therefore a kaffir of the worst order. He’s a Christian, of course, and an Indonesian of Chinese ethnicity. Neither of these qualities is favoured as a political option by the chaps with the placards and the turban fetish. It’s a sorry tale all round, and not one to laugh about. Except that sometimes if you don’t laugh, you cry.
It Just Piles Up Photos that surfaced on Facebook just before Christmas,
HECTOR’S of the disgraceful piles of garbage washed up on Double Six beach at Legian, after seasonal rains flushed out the poisonous detritus that clogs every watercourse you can think of, are an object lesson in the poverty of public policy in Bali. They show how fiddling around at the edges, or hoping someone else will front up with the money and the means to do something for you while funding your latest vehicle fetish, is a cop-out, a disease risk and a PR disaster all rolled into one. They were taken by surfing identity Tim Hain on Dec. 24. He noted that he was feeling a little delicate as a result of the ASC Tour awards party held at Canggu the previous evening, but what really made him feel sick was the sight that greeted him on Double Six beach on his morning walk. It’s true that there are some good waste management initiatives in an increasing number of localities in Bali, organized at local community level. Craig Glennister of the Alasari resort in Tabanan mentioned the one that’s up and running in his area. Fair enough.
C/BT/G-9 Nov. 16
But it’s not enough. Just for example, in the Bukit area that houses The Cage (from whence Hector scribbles) a local contractor is paid by some residents to properly dispose of their rubbish. Others couldn’t care less – it’s not the money – and continue with the sorry custom of just tossing garbage away. Sometimes they set fire to it and the noxious plastic it contains. But mostly they just forget about it. Everywhere you go there’s a smelly bag of diseased rubbish lying in the scrub or by the road. The local free-range dogs, a pariah class created by public apathy and indolence, the rats and the dengue mosquitoes, are guaranteed a continuous feast as a result.
A Sound Point Helen Mirren is a great actor. And anyone who has seen the long-ago guest spot she did as a much younger one on a British TV talk show – when interviewer Michael Parkinson asked her with a particularly gauche grin if her “attributes” got in the way of her winning offers of serious roles – will understand also that she is a highly intelligent woman with whom one should not trifle.
C/BT/I-02 March 16
So when she observed that by general agreement 2016 was a shit of a year, as she did recently, it was very hard to argue. You don’t even have to have read the library-load of end-of-year reviews to work that out. She wasn’t making a partisan political point. That’s a tiresome practice of some actors, who seem to believe that a good publicist, a photogenic presence and an ability to take direction on a film set invests them with special knowledge, but it’s not hers. Neither was she speaking in personal terms. She has a broader mind than that. She can see that things happen that aren’t good, even if they don’t directly affect you; and she is not so consumed with Self in the modern fashion that nothing else seems to matter. In short, she’s a breath of fresh air. See below for Hector’s view on The Year It Would Be Nice to Rewind.

Monkey of a Year The Monkey is most likely exhausted, or near as, since his year is nearly over. The Diary, a Monkey of the class of 1944, certainly is. In the Chinese Zodiac, everyone’s oncein-a-dozen years mazurka is not a treat but a challenge. And 2016 was not a good year for anyone. The year of the Fire Rooster starts on Jan. 28. We look forward to it. The next Monkey year is in 2028. Perhaps we’ll see you for that party. President-elect Donald Trump’s next celestial challenge is in 2018, by the way. He’s a Fire Dog. But he gets his box of matches a year early, on Jan. 20, when he is inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States. He’ll probably tweet about that. Local News Bali Bomb Squad Defuses Low Explosive Device Left in Local Café The Bali Police Bomb Squad was summoned on Tuesday, December 21, 2016, to Jalan Raya Banjar, Ubud when a backpack bearing a label saying “Bomb” was left in a local restaurant. The backpack was isolated, examined and neutralized by bomb technicians who found the bag contained low explosives in the form of fireworks. Suara Pembaruan reported that the Ubud Police Precinct confirmed that the bag contained pyrotechnics, three nails and a trigger powered by a solar panel. The small device was rigged to explode as it was exposed to an increasing amount of sunlight. The suspicious backpack, with the word “bomb” written on its exterior, was discovered by the restaurant’s owner on his doorstep as he opened for business. The man immediately alerted police and ensured that his staff coming to work stayed temporarily well clear of the eatery. Police say the passport of Dutch tourist was found in the bag. The Dutch national had several days earlier reported the theft of a bag containing his passport and personal electronic devices. Police and anti-terror specialists continue to try to track the person who left the bag at the restaurant. [balidiscovery.com December 25, 2016]
Australian Tourists Forced to Undergo Public “Walk of Shame” on Gili Trawangan Two Australian tourists have been forced to perform a public “walk of shame” through the streets of an Indonesian island for allegedly stealing bicycles. The man and woman, whose identities have not been confirmed, wore cardboard signs emblazoned with the words, “I AM THIEVE DON’T DO WHAT I DID..!”, as they were marched through the streets by village chiefs and police officers. It was reported by thestar.com.my that the suspects, who appear to be in their twenties, were spotted on CCTV stealing two bicycles from the tourist hotspot. Village chief Muhamad Taufik told AFP: “We interrogated them, made an agreement, paraded them around the island and forced them to leave Gili. The walk of shame parade is a regulation in our village. I don’t know whether the police are charging them now, what matters to me is that they’re [the suspects] now gone.” Being publicly shamed is a common form of punishment on the island of Gili Trawangan, central Indonesia. Parading those who appear to have committed crimes on the Gili Islands has been common practice for many years though its origins are unclear. [IBT December 20, 2016]
3-meter Python Pulled from the Roof of Denpasar Home Emergency responders rescued a python from the roof of a Denpasar resident’s home on Wednesday morning. BPBD Denpasar, the regional disaster management agency, posted a video of the extraction on Jl. Raya Sesetan to their Facebook page. The python was over three meters long, according to BPBD, and getting it out was a bit of a struggle. [Coconuts Bali December 22, 2016]
Bali`s Economy Grows Faster Than National Average Balis economy grew 6.17 percent in the third quarter of this year, exceeding the national average growth of 5.02 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of this year. “The growth, however, was slowed than 6.54 percent in the previous quarter,” head of the Bali representative office of Bank Indonesia Causa Iman Karana said here on Saturday. Iman Karana attributed the slower growth in the third quarter of this year to poor performance in government, non profit agency and household consumption, and investment, as well as in construction and in mining sector. Decline was also recorded in the procurement of electricity, gas and water, in whole sale and retail trade, in information, communication, financial and health services, he said. Iman Karana predicted that in the fourth quarter of this year Balis economy would grow 6.06-6.46 percent. The tourism sector is expected to grow in the last quarter of this year especially toward the end of the year. Winter in Europe would cause more holiday makers from that continent to visit Bali. [Antara December 25, 2016] Arrests Made in Legian over 25 kilos of Marijuana The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) confiscated around 25 kilograms of marijuana in Bali, coming from north Sumatra. Two suspects, alleged dealers, were arrested on Monday on Legian’s Jl. Sahadewa and were identified in reports as RN, 25, and GR, 31. Head of BNN Bali, Brigadier General Putu Gede Suastawa, said officers are deepening their investigation of the drug case and are coordinating with BNN north Sumatra to find out who the two suspects were working with. The drugs were likely intended for distribution in Bali around new year’s festivities. There have been a number of big take-downs in Bali lately, leading up to the holiday, like the Russian who was arrested over three kilos of cannabis in toothpaste and the mother and son duo found with 4,200 ecstasy pills. Fireworks Allegedly Set 2 Uluwatu Surf Villas Ablaze The thatch-roofed villas sit atop the cliff overlooking the famous left-hand pointbreak. Allegedly, the fire started when five hotel guests, who were reportedly visiting from California, lit fireworks “into the roof.” All of the villas were occupied when the fire erupted Wednesday night, but no one was harmed as guests were quickly evacuated. When asked if the occupants of the two villas that had burned down were questioned by police for purposes of the investigation, representatives from Uluwatu Surf Villas said they were waiting for information and hoped to learn more by Friday. The National Police’s Densus 88 counterterrorism squad reportedly shot dead two alleged terrorists in Purwakarta, West Java, on Sunday for allegedly planning acts of terrorism on Christmas and New Year festivities. The two suspects have been identified as Abu Sovi, aka Abu Azis, from Bandung, West Java, and Abu Faiz from West Bandung. The incident is the latest in a series of raids aimed at preventing terrorist attacks in the Muslim-majority nation.
Beauty Blogger Dead After Being ‘Electrocuted by Faulty Shower’ in Bali
At 12:30 p.m. local time, Densus 88 raided a floating house on Jatiluhur dam where Sovi and Faiz—according to two other terrorist suspects Rijal, aka Abu Arham, 29, and Ivan Rahmat Syarif, 28, who were previously arrested in Cibinong, West Java—were reportedly hiding.
A friend found Rini Cesillia, 26, naked on the bathroom floor still clutching on to the shower hose and with burn marks across her chest, The Sun reported. They were worried when she didn’t pick up her phone and Maria Bambang, 20, went into the room to find water overflowing from the bathroom. It began spilling onto the bedroom floor and Ms Bambang then found an unconscious Ms Cesillia.
However, Faiz and Sovi refused to surrender and attacked the Police with machetes, where the officers had to resort to shooting the assailants, National Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rikwanto confirmed.[The Jakarta Post December 25, 2016]
The blogger’s body has been sent away for a post mortem examination, however Balinese police believe she died after being electrocuted in the shower. The blogger, from Jakarta, Indonesia, was on a luxury holiday on the island with her friends and had gone for a shower at the hotel on Tuesday morning.

Floods and Sludge Close Bedugul Gardens Flooding and landslides in the Candi Kuning area of Baturiti have temporarily isolated the Bedugul Botanical Gardens (Eka Karya Bedugul). Balipost.com reports that the sacred Teratai Bang Temple (Pura Teratai Bang) at the Botanical Gardens has suffered landslides and flooding leaving large areas now under mud. The Bedugul Botanical Garden was declared closed on Thursday, December 22, 2016 until further notice to allow time for the large clean up and repair work at the Gardens that is being thwarted by a lack of large earth-moving equipment. The head of the Bedugul Botanical Gardens, Bayu Adjie, confirmed the closure of the popular tourist destination until the landslides and damage can be cleared in an ongoing effort undertaken by the public, armed forces, and the Disaster Management Agency. Some estimate that the clean up will take approximately 10 days meaning the Botanical Gardens will only be open to the public again in the first week of 2017. [balidiscovery.com December 25, 2016]
In recent years, Bali’s been no stranger to ATM fraud. In fact, it’s even been identified as one of the worst places in the world for ATM skimming. While the OJK (Financial Services Authority) issued a warning to the public against card skimming in Bali earlier this year, now the YLKI (Indonesian Consumers Foundation) is speaking up on the issue as well. The Bali YLKI chairman, Putu Armaya says the foundation is handling several cases related to money stolen from bank customers via ATM fraud. During a speech in Denpasar on Sunday, Armaya even cited one case where a bank customer reported up to Rp 76 million stolen from their account. If money is taken from your account without your permission, you should immediately report the stolen money to law enforcement and YLKI, Armaya said. “Even the slightest loss of money should be reported, that’s the consumer’s right,” Tribun Bali quoted Armaya as saying. Feeding Your Pet Rabbit Many people in the West keep rabbits rather than dogs and cats because rabbits can be happily left at home alone all day while their owners are out at work. They are less common as pets in Bali and perhaps more likely to end up in the cooking pot, but they do make lovely pets! Though often happy on their own, they are by nature social creatures that enjoy the company of their owners and other animals in the household. They are best kept in pairs because they form strong bonds with each other. They will play with toys, seek out and follow humans, and enjoy being stroked. Most rabbits will use a litter tray and so can live indoors in the house, but they can sometimes be destructive. In Bali rabbits are sometimes sold on the side of the road, or in pet markets. They are also on occasion colored with dye before being sold, as baby chicks are too. Unfortunately these rabbits are often weaned from their parents too early and not kept in suitable conditions, so they tend to have rather a short life expectancy. A rabbit’s natural response to pain or distress is to sit quietly, preferably hidden from view. As a result, many diseases and causes of suffering can be easily overlooked. Though the life expectancy of a domestic rabbit is potentially 10-12 years, few make it to this age. The sad thing is, many of these diseases are preventable. An incorrect diet can be the underlying cause to many health problems. Rabbits are strict herbivores that eat a variety of plants in the wild. Although they prefer grass and leaves, they can digest more fibrous foods and are able to survive on sparse vegetation. They do NOT need a high calorie diet, as their digestive system has evolved to use bacterial fermentation to break down fibre and form nutrients. Their teeth are continually growing and being worn down, to cut and grind food before it enters the stomach. Any undigested food that reaches the colon is split into large and small particles, and sent in opposite directions. The small particles pass into the cecum, which is the fermentation chamber full of bacteria. These bacteria break down the particles to form volatile fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins and other nutrients. Large particles that are difficult to break down pass rapidly through the colon, are compressed, and are excreted as hard fecal pellets. Once or twice a day, the motility of the colon changes and the cecum (fermentation chamber) contracts to expel its contents as slightly larger, softer fecal pellets. These are known as cecotropes. Rabbits eat these pellets of feces, the cecotropes. They are often consumed as they come out of the anus, and are a rich source of nutrients. If this cycle is broken, it disrupts the healthy bacteria that live in the rabbits digestive tract. In very young rabbits, this can cause death by enterotoxemia, i.e. overproduction of toxins by a population of bacteria that is unbalanced and out of control. It can take a while for a rabbit to achieve a stable healthy gut flora (bacterial population), hence why young rabbits are so susceptible.
So, what should I be feeding my rabbit? The best foods for rabbits are grass and wild plants as they are palatable, low in calories, high in fibre and wear the teeth down. Leafy green vegetables are very good, such as spinach, cabbage, kale and carrot tops. Remember that when a new food is introduced, it can cause a flurry of cecotropes, which must not be interpreted as diarrhea. On the contrary, it is perfectly normal and healthy!
Rabbits on a low fibre diet tend to produce softer cecotropes which can stick to the fur around the anus, especially if the fur is fluffy. If this same diet is high in calories, as many of the commercial ones often are, then the rabbit is more likely to be fat and unable to reach their anus to eat the cecotropes. The end result is that a foul smelling mass of matted fecal material accumulates under the tail which is unpleasant for both the rabbit and the owner. Moreover, the skin under the matted feces becomes sore and the smelly, moist area attracts flies. This then leads to flystrike, which is very distressing and often fatal.

Are teeth problems related to diet? Dental problems are possibly the commonest reason why we see rabbits at Sunset Vet. There is universal agreement amongst experts that mixed muesli-type diets are at least partly responsible for these teeth problems. Although these types of rabbit food are cheap, tasty and convenient, they are totally unsuitable for rabbits. They are high in calories and low in fibre, and even if the manufacturer claims to have a balanced mixture of ingredients, many rabbits will cherry pick certain bits from the bowl. This means that certain tasty components such as peas or maize, which are very calcium deficient, are selectively eaten while less palatable ingredients are ignored.

Letters To Bali Advertiser Importing by Post Office Dear Sir,
The continual growth of the rabbit’s teeth is reliant on calcium intake, so when a rabbits diet is deficient, it draws the calcium from its bones instead. This disrupts the tooth structure and can lead to wonky teeth, abscesses, blocked tear ducts, osteoporosis and spinal problems. In addition, rabbits with poor teeth cannot groom themselves properly and so can get mite infestations, leading to scaling and itchy skin. Poor teeth also make the rabbit unable to eat hay, so the proportion of fibre in the diet decreases and causes digestive problems, as discussed earlier. By and large, if a rabbit is eating large amounts of hay it is an indicator that it has healthy teeth. A useful way of telling whether your rabbit has any dental issues is to gently press on the cheeks where the molar teeth are. If this seems to cause discomfort then it is likely there are bony spurs that need to be filed down, and a trip to your local vet is in order.
Low calorie but high fibre foods are GOOD, high calorie but low fibre foods are BAD!

I would like to point out a relative new situation that the Indonesian Government have implemented. As most people already know one cannot have any liquids, cosmetics, creams, hair lotion or even medicine on a prescription sent into this country! The customs office in the P.O. will refuse to let any parcels sent from overseas to be released from the parcel collection area (at the back of main P.O. Renon) to any recipient unless one has a document from The BPOM (Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan) to authorise and approve the said contents of the parcel! I have special medicine on prescription sent from my doctor in England and when I asked for the approval of this medicine from the BPOM they told me it must be sent to the Government Pharmacy in Jakarta to be analysed and checked and presumably if one can buy said medicine in this country then it would not be allowed to be released and subsequently confiscated! Incidentally for checking the medicine there are charges of Rp300,000 for this Rp200,000 for that and so on! My medicine is prescribed and is free on the National Health in England. I can understand food not being allowed into this country as many other countries do the same for fear of pests and outbreaks of diseases but for the life of me I cannot understand not allowing prescribed medicine to be sent to a patient. I implore the Government to reconsider this ridiculous situation. Thank you, Mr. Paul Post, e-mail, fax or bring in your letters. Please address all to

2016 was quite an eventful year for many of us. Many friends and clients were challenged with loss in their lives whether it was a death of a loved one, ending of a job, or the break up of a significant relationship in their lives. 2016 was the year of purification, which means that were faced with the somewhat difficult task of clearing out anything from our lives that was no longer needed, as well as letting go of relationships and situations which were no longer in alignment with who we are choosing to be. For me, it was a surprising year interlaced with moments of sheer beauty juxtaposed with darkness. I was confronted with both my own and other people’s darkness, which pushed me to go even deeper than I have ever gone before. I am truly grateful for all the awareness that I was willing to receive in 2016, for this guided me to make conscious choices that were ultimately the best choices for me and my soul path. In 2016 I walked away from three significant group situations that were no longer in alignment with me and contributing to a great deal of stress and unease in my life and being; I facilitated healing and transformation for more than 200 people and had the honor of teaching Reiki 1, 2 and 3 to many amazing women and men who were/are opening up to their Spiritual power. I visited the Mayan Ruins in the Yucatán with my son Danil and swam in the clear blue waters in Tulum drinking in the beauty of the ancient ruins only 100 meters away. In October I held a Shamanic training with five fabulous women in Chiang rai, Thailand and drummed under the full moon as these potent women and other guests journeyed to meet their power animals. In November I completed my second year of Advanced Shamanic training and while I gained more knowledge and learned new Shamanic techniques for divination and healing, I now understand that my journey with an academic approach to Shamanism has come to an end. It is time for me to go into the heart, as I believe this is where deep healing and transformation can occur for us all. For 2017, I will continue to trust my Spiritual guidance as I head to Mexico again in February and March where I will seek out a woman shaman who can show me by her example, the path of the heart. I’ve been told she knows I’m coming, and that we will work side by side. Joy fills my heart whenever I think of her even though we’ve never met. I fully trust that she exists and that I will be given clues by my Spirit guides or have my own intuitive guidance which will direct me to wherever I need to go. I have no doubt our paths will cross.

be made at our office or by money transfer to our bank.
In numerology, 2017 is a universal one year. It is a good time for us to plant new seeds of intention for whatever our heart truly desires. What is your vision for your relationships with loved ones and friends? What do you hope to achieve with your finances or business? What are your personal health goals? With the energy of number one, it will be much easier to accomplish whatever you wish to actualize in your life. The intentions you set for 2017 will energetically influence the next nine years of your life. The following words resonate with the 10 year which also breaks down to number 1: Aloha = 10 Blissful = 10 DNA = 10 Spirit = 10 Goddess = 10 Pioneer = 10 Union = 10 Discipline = 10 Vitality = 10 Namaste = 10

Are you ready to leave behind any limiting beliefs and negative behavior patterns that no longer serve you? This is a year of infinite possibilities and new beginnings, but to make your dreams a reality it’s important to remember that you need to focus on what you truly desire, feel the passion and excitement connected to your goal or dream, and then ask the Universe to support you in making your dream a reality. I know that this works, because this is how I live every day of my life. I believe in magic and I fully trust in my higher self and helping spirits to show me the infinite possibilities that are available to me. What will you choose for 2017? What grand and glorious adventures await you?

As each of us activates our inherent creativity through our GODDESS (a 10/1 number) selves, we activate a VITALITY (a 10/1 number) a force within us that can move mountains, that can create miracles. As the saying goes, you will see it when you believe it. (Source: universallifetools.com)
