Often people will say to me “I don’t know how you do it?!” but I am just like you, I am not a perfect mother who has boundless patience and time and this was not my choice, but it is my life and my responsibility. As a parent of a new baby, you of course hope that your baby will be mentally and emotionally robust but to have a doctor or a medical professional tell you otherwise is the ultimate shock. Fear, denial and isolation can be thrust upon you and you can descend into a period of grief for a perfect vision of motherhood. Everyday you strive to set these thoughts aside, stand on your own two feet and embrace the NOW! This is how it was for me when my daughter was diagnosed with ASD at 2.5years old. We had a hunch from about 15 months that things were not developing as they should and certain behaviours were manifesting that suggested that she was not finding the world her friend. Huge bouts of screaming and crying were the norm and she was permanently in a state of what I can only describe as ‘rabbit in headlights’! We were new parents, she was our first baby and maybe the signs were there earlier but to us she was a happy little baby who smiled and babbled and loved peek-a-boo and tickles but that suddenly all changed and the light went out in her eyes and the world became a very scary place. She lost any words that she had and she became withdrawn and isolated from people and situations and her play became very repetitive. It was terrifying to watch and the powerlessness was stark and confronting. We were referred to a behavioural psychologist who did the necessary school visit and assessments and the result we had been resigned to but also feared came out as a conclusive ASD diagnosis. So what now? The world of Autism is growing and expanding positively and more and more research and efforts are being put into helping and supporting families which is amazing for raising
its profile and demystifying it to a certain extent. There is still so much to learn, however; its huge spectrum and nuances can be extremely daunting to navigate as a parent. They say that for every 100 children with Autism, you find 100 different types of Autism and when finding the preferred modality to help your child, deciding what to tackle first can be very confusing. Do you work on their behaviours with ABA, or their social skills and emotional regulation with play therapy? Do you work on their speech with speech therapy or their motor skills and sensory profile with occupational therapy? Or a combination of everything? And how many hours are the right number of hours? Experts will tell you that their modality is best and that it has to be done as soon as the child is diagnosed but I remember thinking that I don’t have enough hours in the week and questioning what I was prepared to put my child through to get to that magic number. At the time we felt we had no other choice and we did do the hard and fast route to begin with and my daughter was doing 12 hours of ABA, 6 hours of play therapy and 2 hours of speech therapy, but this became unsustainable - I was tired with two other little boys at home, ferrying her back and forth and she was exhausted and not a happy little girl. However, it was only when we felt that we were reaching a cross-roads that we were introduced to AIMS: a bespoke service whereby therapists are trained under the AIMS model and they come into the home, either as a live-in or a live-out and work with the child with the resources available to them in the home environment. The curriculum is tailor-made to the child’s interests and passions within 4 main areas - Awareness, Interests, Movement and Sensory, rather than it be based on any specific concept. Therefore, all the foundational skills can be taught under the umbrella of a child’s specific interests. For instance, our therapist joined us on a holiday to Bali and this was while the threat of the volcano was still rife. My daughter became fascinated by volcanoes and asked a lot about them, so our therapist adapted a unit of work including artwork, sensory experiments, phonics, geography, science all under that project-based learning arena. We are often told that the greatest therapy for our kids is at
home but with working parents or parents with other kids, sometimes this is not achievable and the AIMS therapists take that role within the comfort and security that the home brings and this can allow that child more scope to work and learn effectively. I can honestly say that once we dialled back all the interventions and introduced a more relaxed but still pertinent form of therapy, the light returned to her eyes and she became a happy little girl who seemed to want to learn and in turn she then got the best out of me. Her therapist is honestly like her best friend – a trained chaperone who gives her access to indoor and outdoor play as well as teaching her valuable life lessons through trips and excursions. It is so natural to put your child first and gear everything around making them feel happy and secure, however, one of the key lessons that I have learnt in this journey is that if YOU are not feeling happy and secure then nothing works. Our ASD children are often so sensorally wired that our vibes and moods can have a direct impact on their capacity to make sense of the world. Finding a support network is pretty key so whether it be friends, family, a Facebook group or Counselling, finding the people who you trust with your deepest darkest fears can be invaluable in those early days when prospects may seem pretty bleak and day to day life pretty tough. I also found that our children tell us more about what should be done than we give them credit for; by being in tune with my daughter’s filter and capacity for certain interventions that we had chosen for her, we became better aligned to the right kind of approach for her and that isn’t necessarily what the experts have recommended for her. As a parent you might not be an Autism expert, but as a parent, you are an expert in your Autistic child! Pippa Gresham Pippa is British and has lived in Singapore with her husband and 3 young children, Hetty (5.5), Riley (3.5) and Bruno (2) for 11 years. Travel Blogs Many travelers and digital nomads dream of funding their travel by setting up a popular travel blog, or becoming a top travel infl uencer, widely quoted in the mainstream media, with an Instagram account that receives six-figure visits monthly. The sponsorship deals flow in, making you a digital nomad with a six-figure income, so you can focus on what you love most: travel. For most of us, our blogs languish in obscurity, but for a select handful of travelers, they have been able to turn their love of travel into wellpaid work. The key to their success is often that these bloggers didn’t start out to make money; they set out to travel, find a way to fund a nomadic lifestyle and along the way, share with others how they manage to do what they do. Here are some of my favorite travel and travel advice blogs: The Blonde Abroad started as the blog of a solo traveler with a single backpack who lived on $50 a day. Since then, Kiersten has grown her blog into a multi-level business, with a staff of six, offering social media and marketing consulting, as well as content creation. She runs retreats on how to set up your own blog and photography travel tours in South Africa. Kiersten’s blog focuses on how to travel on a budget, as well as solo female and student travel. Travel Babbo is a site that focuses on family travel. Eric Stoen started the site to inspire more people to travel with their partner and kids. (Babbo means Dad, or Daddy, in some parts of Italy.) CNN/Forbes ranked Eric as the World’s #4 travel influencer in 2017, and his blogs has won awards from the North American Travel Journalists Association, the Shorty Awards and Conde Nast Traveler. He is currently a Brand Ambassador for AFAR Magazine, Travelocity and Universal Orlando Resort. Eric has been published in AFAR, Conde Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, Outdoor Families Magazine and others. Adventurous Kate is another travel blog set up by a solo female traveler, Kate McCully, who spent time in Southeast Asia, decided she wanted to travel more extensively and turned her blog into a full-time business. (She’s made her entire living online since 2010.) Kate now travels the world, for a living, having already visited 74 countries. Kate emphasizes, on her blog, that ‘making a full-time living as a travel blogger is an extraordinarily difficult thing to do. This is in no way passive income — it requires an immense amount of time, work, and networking.’ According to her, most travel bloggers don’t ‘make it to five years.’ In addition to travel stories, Kate blogs about solo female travel and how to make it as a pro-blogger. Nomadic Matt is the travel site of Matthew Kepnes, a native New Yorker, who started long-term travelling in 2006. Since then, he has travelled to over 80 countries. Matt set up the site to show other travelers that they don’t need a lot of money to travel, just the know-how of how to fund staying on the road. As popular as he has become (his How to Travel The World on $50 a Day is a New York Times best-seller) his main focus is still on helping people travel long-term for less, save money on flights and accommodation and work and earn money abroad so you can travel longer. Matt, unlike most travel bloggers, does not accept sponsored content or sponsorship of any kind. He says his website is ‘about showing you what its really like on the road and we refuse to promote websites, companies, restaurants or services that don’t help you do that.’ Nomadic Matt is the top travel blog in the world. Other popular travel blogs include Dan Flying Solo, A Broken Backpack, Lili’s Travel Plans, The Blog Abroad, My Life’s a Movie, Drew Binksy, Travel Break, Backpacker Banter, Nomadic Boys, OneStep4Ward, Shut Up and Go and The Planet D: Adventure Blog. A growing trend for travel blogs is offering a curated des-
tination itinerary, with a strong focus on selected art, craft or design. These blogs feature stunning travel and destination photography and have huge followings on their Instagram accounts. Here are some of my favorite bespoke blogs that focus on the intersection of travel and design: Scandinavia Standard describes itself as a ‘one-stopshop for food, drink, hotels, design, art, culture, shopping, outdoor activities and lots more.’ The site focuses on Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland. If you’re travelling to this region, and want recommendations on, say, the best bakeries in Copenhagen, the top brunch spots in Oslo or the best wine bars in Copenhagen, this website is for you. The site isn’t just for tourists: ‘locals, immigrants and visitors’ can all benefit. Scandinavia Standard just released a new app that lets you plan customized itineraries for a trip to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo or Reykjavik. The website offers monthly calendars for each city, so you can see at a glance what’s on where. Jungles in Paris is collaboration by two brothers, Oliver and Darrell Hartman, which mixes stunning photography with travel reporting with a ‘special focus on roots and place.’ The brothers ‘spotlight craft, culture, geography and wildlife … celebrating subjects that are often at risk of extinction in a globalized, growth-driven 21st century.’ Subjects range from scrimshaw carvers in Nantucket, falconers in England, dhow ship builders in Dubai, shrimp fisherman in Taiwan, bull jumping in Ethiopia to traditional shepherds in Romania and more. Many stories feature endangered wildlife and rapidly disappearing traditional crafts or ways of life. One poignant story featured an elderly couple living alone in a remote village in Spain, the only remaining residents of a once-thriving village. The brothers are filmmakers, as well as writers, and often post short films.

Petite Passport is a site set up by journalist and photographer, Pauline Egge. Her site, she says, is for her to ‘collect all the nicest design places on earth’ in one place. Pauline’s intention is to help travelers find the ‘hidden gems’ in popular destinations, with the emphasis on their style and design. She offers city guides for sale through her website, for ‘the design-minded traveler who likes to discover the coolest spots in town.’ Melting Butter is another visually-stunning site for amazing photography featuring eateries, clubs, shops, bars, hotels and more, or as the site states, ‘cool travel hotspots.’ On the Grid is a site of ‘neighborhood guides lovingly curated by local creatives in 106 cities around the world’ made for other ‘urban creatives.’ Their guides showcase places ‘where contemporary arts and culture thrive’. Asian offerings are still limited, with most guides for Europe and North America. The site also offers a job board for design professionals in the various cities for which they make guides. Other popular curated travel blogs with a culinary, art, photography or design focus are JO&SO, A Hotel Life, We Heart, Class Touriste, The Voyageur and Culinary Backstreets.

6 Curious Encounters of the Human Kind - Indonesia by Paul Spencer Sochaczewski
Paul Sochaczewski is not your ordinary travel writer. His first visit to Southeast Asia was to the East Malaysian state of Sarawak when the 22-year-old took a life-changing tour of duty with the U.S. Peace Corp assisting elementary school teachers. He later worked at the WWF helping to create global campaigns to protect rainforests and biological diversity. In the years to come, Sochaczewski penned four books set in the region: Soul of the Tiger, Sultan and the Mermaid Queen, An Inordinate Fondness for Beetles and Redheads, along with some six hundred bylined articles in leading international publications. Although he has spent over 40 years crisscrossing Asia, his favorite area of travel is Indonesia. His slender book Curious Encounters of the Human Kind-Indonesia portrays the archipelagic nation as you’ve probably never imagined it, full of startling events, inscrutable inhabitants, unexpected moments of intimacy and introspection, excitement and solemnity as well as profound disappointment. In these stories, we learn why modern Indonesian sultans continue love affairs with a mermaid queen, why the island of Flores is Ground Zero for Hobbit sightings, how a now-neglected spice caused historic mayhem among greedy Europeans, why discovering a new species can be almost as good as sex and what is the allure of Waltzing Banana Island? This veteran writer/traveler understands that the real attractions of Indonesia aren’t the supermalls and hyper developed tourist destinations like Bali and Jakarta, but this watery nation’s rich, varied and arcane cultures and customs. He seeks out largely unexplored outlying islands, sacred forests and deep interiors, the domain of elephants, orangutans, wild rivers and remote tribes. In the story “In Search of the Lost W h i t e Tr i b e o f H a l m a h e r a , ” Sochaczewski sets out to find giant white cannibals on the New Jerseysized K-shaped island of Halmahera. These tall, naked and intensely xenophobic cannibals, known as Orang Togutil, were believed to kill unwanted visitors by hurling stones at them with their feet and eating their victims raw. After finding the 3000 ethnic oddities in the isolated hills on the far side of the seldom-visited island, the curious Togutil turned out to be neither white, nor tall, nor nasty, nor lost. Sochaczewski has a predilection for hanging out with people who rely on nature for their main sources of cash by selling products of the forest or sea like edible bird’s nests and sea cucumber. Many of his narratives depict people who admire us for our possessions while we admire them for their simplicity. In “We Better Collect Bird Nests Before the Outsiders Get Here,” he heads into the jungles of Aru Island with men carrying only bows, arrows and dogs who return several hours later with a deer. An ardent conservationist, Sochaczewski is incensed at the rampant environmental destruction he witnesses everywhere he goes – the dynamiting of coral reefs, the wholesale slaughter of birds, sea life, mammals and endangered species for economic survival and to supply the global marketplace. He never ceases questioning, probing for the truth. He shatters the myth that local indigenous people make good stewards of nature. He commiserates with the problems of the little man, wong kecil, who are pitted against government bureaucrats, Javanese overlords, Chinese merchants and petty but all-powerful village chiefs. Another tale recounts how an American marine biologist by pure chance stumbled upon a big ugly fish in a fish market in Manado, northern Sulawesi. Dubbed the “Dinofish,” the coelacanth was first discovered in the Indian Ocean north of Madagascar in 1938. This living fossil had previously only
been known from fossil records and was assumed to have gone extinct some 70 million years ago. Other stories relate how the writer struggles up muddy slopes in the Arfak mountains of Papua hunting for bowerbirds, patiently awaits green sea turtles crawling ashore to lay eggs on isolated beaches, embarks on a plant collecting trip on an impossibly remote tiny speck of an island in the Raja Ampat Sea to find out how it got its unlikely name. In “The Man with the Pins in his Lungs,” the author meets an Indonesian dukun (shaman) who tells him a secret about his family that shakes his smug Western cool to the core. In the same story, we learn of a man whose X-rays showed that his lungs were full of needles; of a man who passed blood in his urine for three years as a result of a spell cast on him by a younger man who wanted his job; of a woman who cast powerful spells that made herself irresistible to men by means of black magic.

It seems that every Indonesian has had a close encounter with a spirit (djin), a ghost (hantu) or has experienced unexplained phenomena, either personally or through a relative or friend. These mystical occurrences defy black and white categorization. Myth and reality are blurred. Sochaczewski suggests that visitors to this complex country should not question things too closely nor examine them with a Western eye. The shadow world loses its definition when the light is turned up too brightly. This collection of personal travel tales is as good as any in Sochaczewski’s whole “Curious Encounters” series of five books. Each story goes off on an unusual subject of research, a hidden corner of a country, a curious tangent, a nostalgic reflection, a provocative assertion as the author sallies forth on yet another adventurous escapade. There are frequent and surprising infusions of history, humor and social commentary. Not shy of tweaking his readers, Sochaczewski discusses a diverse range of topics in essays that are edgy, witty, entertaining and captivating.
C/Ci/I-27 Sept 17
Along the way the writer discovers scoundrels, celebrity monks, fortune tellers, prophets, hard-to-find holy men and other extraordinary, eccentric and memorable characters. Sochaczewski’s long stints in Southeast Asia give him a unique voice and perspective in tales that combine storytelling, fact-filled biographical portraiture and lively personal travelogue. After each story, I felt more enlightened about a country that I’ve already been exploring for 45 years. Curious Encounters-Indonesia is for those who believe that the world is an endlessly curious place where strange events occur without any plausible explanation. Safe in the hands of this competent chronicler, the Mysterious East is alive and well. Curious Encounters of the Human Kind - Indonesia: True Asian Tales of Folly, Greed, Ambition and Dreams by Paul Spencer Sochaczewski, Explorer’s Eye Press 2015, ISBN978-294-057-3042156 pages, dimensions 13 cm x 20 cm.

Woman in Bali murder gives up claim to mother’s estate
‘Body In A Suitcase’ murderer Heather Mack has given up her claim on her mother’s million dollar estate - which will now go to her three-year-old daughter Stella. Mack is serving a ten year sentence in one of the world’s most notorious prisons in Bali for murdering her mom Sheila von Wiese-Mack with her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer in 2014 in a plot to take her inheritance. Mack was due to receive a regular income from her mother’s estate until she turned 30 when she was to inherit $1.6 million, according to Sheila’s will which named her as the sole heir. But Sheila’s brother William Wiese, the executor of Sheila’s million-dollar estate, refused to pay out, citing the Illinois slayer statute which states if you’re involved in a murder and you’re a beneficiary of a trust of the person you murdered, you lose all rights as a beneficiary. The ensuing legal battle between Mack and the estate has already eaten up David Bowie and the art of dying around half of Sheila’s estate. Finally, on Wednesday, both sides reached a settlement which states that Mack will not receive ‘any property, benefit, or other interest.’ The sole beneficiary will be The clues were there in the videos and artwork he produced in Mack’s daughter, Stella, who was born in the Indonesian prison in March 2015 while she and Schaehis final months – David Bowie knew his end was near. But sheer fer awaited trial. More detailed financial terms of the settlement agreement are confidential. will power kept him alive long enough to release his last record, William Wiese said he was pleased with the outcome. ‘My goal from Day 1 was to resolve this case and save as much money as possible for Stella,’ he told the Chicago Tribune Wednesday. ‘While I wish it could have been sooner, I’m glad it is finally resolved.’ He added that he’d been determined to stop his niece from benefiting from her mother’s murder. Mack’s attorney, Vanessa Favia, said her client was also glad the matter was resolved. She said that Mack had always wanted her daughter to receive the inheritance but had also asked for some funds for her education when she got out of jail. ‘The settlement is a fair resolution for all parties,’ Favia said Wednesday. A Cook County judge has initially allowed about $150,000 from the estate to be used to pay Mack’s overseas criminal attorney and fund her medical care. But after she was convicted, she was refused any further funds. Stella spent her first two years being raised inside Kerobokan Prison by her mom before she was taken away and placed with a local foster family. When Stella was in prison, she also received a stipend from the Wiese Trust for clothes, food and medical care for the infant. But the food and other goods bought by the trust was being sold to other prisoners in return for junk food, booze and cigarettes, according to her ex Schaefer. He says: ‘Big up to Heather for keeping Stella in jail so the trust has to pay for her food as well that she cooks and sells for cash to buy cigarettes, Coca Cola and chocolate that stabilizes Stella’s diet.’ Mack was pregnant with Stella, when she and Schaefer plotted to kill Sheila, a millionaire Chicago socialite, in August 2014, at an upmarket hotel in Bali, Indonesia. They then dumped her destroyed body in a suitcase, hailed a taxi and fled. Schaefer got eighteen years imprisonment and Mack ten, even though it was her own mother. Authorities say Mack and Schaefer discussed killing von Weise-Mack in text messages. Stella is being cared for by Oshar Putu Melody Suartama, a Balinese Australian, who befriended Mack during the trial. Now the family firmly believe that the US federal authorities are determined that Mack and Schaefer will face trial on their return to the US, as it’s clear they lied in the Indonesian trial and there is no double jeopardy with Indonesia. Lake Toba tragedy: Victims trapped as ferry sank Statements from survivors of an overloaded ferry in Indonesia revealed that most of the victims had been trapped in the vessel’s lower deck when it sank in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, last week. “When the boat was sinking, its lower deck was packed with passengers,” Mr Budiawan, head of the Medan search and rescue (SAR) team in North Sumatra, told The Jakarta Post. As of Sunday, the team has found 22 passengers, 19 of whom survived. The exact number of people travelling that day remains unknown as the ferry had been overloaded, though authorities’ have estimated 184 passengers were on board. The ferry’s maximum capacity is 60 passengers. SAR personnel faced a number of challenges in their search for missing victims, including the lake’s cold temperatures in the evenings, which meant they could dive only during the day. Divers have also been unable to locate the vessel, KM Sinar Bangun, as they had been warned against going past a depth of 80m.On Sunday, after seven days of searching, multibeam and side-scan sonars detected two objects at 490m beneath the surface that resembled the sunken ferry, according to National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) head, Air Marshal M. Syauqi. SAR teams employed two methods in their attempt to locate the vessel: combing the waters within a 32km radius of Tigaras Port and diving with sonar devices. “We are still processing our findings,” Mr Syauqi said, adding that chances were high the objects detected by sonar were the remains of the ferry. According to Mr Arie Prasetyo, head of the Lake Toba Authority board, the search for KM Sinar Bangun was being conducted by Basarnas survey, private company Mahakarya Geo Survey and the Bandung Institute of Technology Alumni Association. “As for the next step, we will hand over the process of identifying KM Sinar Bangun to the authorities,” Mr Arie told the Post. KM Sinar Baru capsized on June 18 at about 5pm local time as it was travelling from Simanindo Port to Tigaras Port in Simalungun. The ferry’s captain, only identified as TS, was detained by Samosir police on Sunday and declared a suspect in the incident. According to National Police chief Tito Karnavian, this was not TS’s first time steering an overloaded ferry. He said investigators would also question related parties that were supposed to be responsible for the boat, such as the transportation agency and the local harbour master. “I will not hesitate to take action against whoever is responsible; not only the captain but also those responsible for monitoring the vessel’s operation,” General Tito said on Sunday as quoted by tribunnews.com. The sinking of KM Sinar Bangun is the latest in a long list of similar accidents that highlight the negligence of small boat operators when it comes to passenger safety. According to Mr Saut Gurning, dean of the November 10 Institute of Technology’s marine engineering postgraduate programme, safety awareness among small boat operators remained low, and passenger safety was not a priority to them. However, vessel operators are not the only ones to blame as regulators, and even passengers themselves, have little awareness regarding the safety requirements of boats, he said. “These small vessel operators often use their own experiences to take care of passenger safety instead of actual passenger safety standards. For example, they provide safety equipment, but they only provide it in certain quantities, which, in many, does not match the number of passengers on board,” he said. Furthermore, operators often attempt to fit more passengers on their boats than their maximum capacity, he added, pointing to the local tuktuk (motorboat) on Samosir as an example. “Most tuktuk can only carry up to 50 people at the same time, but the captain allows 70 people to board. This is a common practice in the area,” Mr Saut said. [The Straits Times June 25, 2018]
Indonesia orders expatriates to learn Bahasa Indonesia, triggering concern Indonesia is making it easier for foreigners to work here - but they will have to study as well. A decree by President Joko Widodo that is set to take effect this month will simplify Indonesia’s procedures for issuing work permits to foreigners, which are often hampered by delays, arbitrary denials and revocations, not to mention compulsory bribes to civil servants just to stamp the paperwork. Buried inside the order is a section requiring all expatriate workers to undergo formal Indonesian language training, an apparent first for any nation in Southeast Asia. The foreign business community has been caught off guard by the new requirement. The government has not explained the reasoning behind the language requirement. But it may be

He used the album to “deal with his approaching death creatively”, said leading pathologist Dr Michael Hunter. But he rejects conspiracy theories about the cause of death in a TV documentary, despite his family’s secrecy. Bowie was cremated within hours of dying, two days after his 69th birthday, and his ashes were scattered over water in Bali, Indonesia, as he had requested. [Express June 17, 2018] Bali’s Mt Agung volcano erupts again, closing Denpasar Airport and leaving flights cancelled
Dozens of flights to and from the Indonesian holiday island of Bali have been grounded or delayed on the eve of the school holidays as clouds of volcanic ash spew more than two kilometres into the air from the Mount Agung volcano. Airlines are updating their advice and are expected to cancel more flights throughout the day after Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport was closed at 3:00am local time (5:00am AEST) today. It is not due to reopen until at least 7:00pm local time. In a tweet, the airport advised people to “stay updated for every information from our official account”. Airlines are waiting to see whether the airport will reopen later tonight. School holidays start for Victoria and Western Australia tomorrow. Virgin Australia has told the ABC it has cancelled all flights to Denpasar today, as has AirAsia. Jetstar cancelled several flights overnight and is expected to cancel more this morning. One Jetstar flight bound for Denpasar from Perth overnight was forced to land in Port Hedland to re-fuel before returning to Perth. Donna Barwood and her family arrived at Perth airport his morning and told ABC Radio Perth their school holiday plans had been dashed for the second time in months. “We were due to fly out the beginning of December last year and all flights were cancelled then, and it was the same volcano - it does not like us,” she said. “We’re looking at other flights, but unfortunately Jetstar left it so late that all the other flights are now booked.” Meteorologists and pilots will spend today assessing weather conditions and the ash cloud to determine whether the airport will be able to re-open tomorrow morning. Most travel insurance policies for Bali have excluded any volcano-related incidents since it began erupting last year, as it is considered a known risk. [ABC News June 29, 2018] Bank Indonesia pulling old rupiah banknotes issued in 1998 and 1999 by end of year Indonesia’s central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), is continuing its modernization of the rupiah, following the launch of new bank notes in 2016, with the pulling of some old ones. As announced in a press release, BI is pulling four bank notes, which were issued in 1998 and 1999, and has given citizens until December 30, 2018 to exchange them with new bank notes. The four bank notes are: IDR10K, issued in 1998 and features the picture of Cut Nyak Dien; IDR20K, issued in 1998 and features the picture of Ki Hajar Dewantara; IDR50K, issued in 1999 and features the picture of W.R. Supratman; and IDR100K, issued in 1999 and features the pictures of Soekarno and Hatta. Citizens are able to exchange these bank notes for new ones at BI offices throughout Indonesia. BI says it’s pulling old bank notes from circulation because they lack security features that prevent money from being counterfeited. The new rupiah bank notes, for example, features the rectoverso technology, which a certain hardline cleric somehow accused as a way that the central bank can secretly fit communist symbols into the rupiah. an attempt by Joko, who is running for re-election next year, to placate political rivals who say he is “opening the floodgates” to foreign workers by streamlining the process for obtaining work permits. Indonesia, a country of 260 million people, currently has about 126,000 working Asian and Western expatriates, a low percentage compared with neighbours like Singapore and Malaysia. Suryo B. Sulisto, a prominent Indonesian business executive said it made little sense to address concerns about illegal foreign labour by imposing a language requirement on bankers, engineers and other professionals. “This is another part of bureaucracy where it’s a moneymaking opportunity for someone,” he said. “People will get into the business of issuing fake language certificates.” In 2015, Joko publicly quashed a draft regulation requiring all expatriate workers to be proficient in the Indonesian language, saying it was bad for business. But his own decree requires companies to arrange and pay for foreigners working in the country for longer than six months to take Indonesian language courses at local schools, and to provide attendance certificates. The order goes into force Tuesday. Some details, like how many class hours are required per week, are still being decided. Johan Budi, Joko’s spokesman, played down any political infighting or the possibility of negative economic repercussions, insisting that the order does not require that expatriates be fluent in the Indonesian language to be employed. Big Changes Begin From Small Steps How much rubbish do you generate everyday? If we took a long hard look at the sheer volume of non organic waste we are individually responsible for on a daily basis, I think many of us would be mortified! But is this enough to shock us into changing the way we think, buy, process, package, wrap, store and generally operate on a daily basis? It was for island resident, Silvija Rumiha.

An expat for seven years, Silvija and her family have developed a love affair with this Indonesian archipelago and are happy to call Bali home. Recently though, a family snorkelling trip around Bali left her aghast, not just at the volume of plastic waste polluting the ocean en route to their destination, but also the amount that surrounded them as they paddled around what was once a pristine marine environment. “The amount of rubbish that pollutes the rivers, roadsides, oceans and even in the beautiful mountain regions of Bali is so disturbing.” As an owner/operator of a food delivery service called Mini Muncher (they create fabulous organic family friendly meals, healthy snacks and treats!), Silvija fully understands the amount of waste that can be generated by one such business alone. “Previously our products were packaged in plastic containers that we encouraged to be reused, however, after some of our recent family adventures I decided to make changes in the packaging.” Mini Muncher has now transitioned to glass jars and they’ve gone label free too! Yes! label free! To help reduce waste and simply dumping of the jars Silvija asks her customers to let her know when the jars are empty so that they can collect them and sterilise them for reuse. But that’s just one of the steps Silvija has taken to reduce the amount of trash on the island. She has also opened a new bulk food store aimed at

Zero Waste Bali will also have a dedicated section of non-food items that will help you get a little closer to living a zero-waste life. These will include: bamboo tooth brushes, organic and non- organic plastic free beeswax wraps, shampoo soap bars, organic menstrual pads and other reusable products as well as some cleaning products. Some of these non-food items will be arriving in store in July and they are having a pre-order sale to help you on your zero waste journey. All details can be found on their website: https://zerowastebali.com creating zero waste! Aptly named Zero Waste Bali, it is the island’s first successful zero waste bulk food store! They stock all sorts of dry goods like grains, seeds, nuts, spices, chocolate, loose tea leaf and much more in bulk bins, gravity dispensers and glass jars as well as organic frozen baby meals, muesli bars, sauces, soups and other fresh food items. You won’t find any plastic bags, wraps or tin packaging available in the store. Shoppers will be offered either compostable paper bags or reusable glass bottles, jars, and material produce bags that can be purchased, or you can bring your own containers with the weight deducted from the price of

So Much More Than Simply a Work Space Let’s face it, humans are fairly social beasts by nature and it’s much more fun to be around likeminded peeps when you’re striving to be productive, but understandably, some of us also find it tricky to function effectively when surrounded by the constant buzz of chatter and background noise. It’s with these factors in mind that the crew at Finns Recreation Club were motivated to create their new, multifaceted Coworking Hub.
When your career relegates you to long hours in front of a computer screen with perhaps the occasional ping of a Facebook friend’s post passing as your only company, work can be become a long and lonely road. But thanks to portable computers, widespread wifi and the concept of coworking spaces, sitting alone at your desk at home as you work towards your deadline is becoming a thing of the past! A relatively recent concept, coworking spaces first seemed to surface around 12 to 13 years ago and have enjoyed a huge surge in popularity of late, with the average number of these social work spaces around the world more than doubling each year. Pretty certain the idea was around long before that - we just called it by a different name…… a coffee shop with connectivity!
Nowadays, coworking connoisseurs are demanding much more than simply a comfy chair and speedy wifi. Workspaces require shared and private areas in order to maximise productivity for all, access to stationery supplies, printing possibilities and of course, readily available recharge stations for all those essential electronic gadgets! But what if your work space offered much, much more? What if you discovered a coworking concept that was more of a lifestyle choice - an all in one venue where you could combine work, recreation and play? Cue Finns Coworking Hub. Access to the Gu’s newest work space not only affords you the use of their comprehensive business centre comprising 3 dedicated work spaces decked out with comfy chairs, every possible print and stationery need, food and beverage service, meeting rooms and high speed wifi, it also offers a place to play! Finished work for the day or need a break to blow out the cobwebs? Why not hit the gym, lap pool or even the water slides or take to the net for an hour at the tennis club. Refuel the think tanks with their selection of healthy and delicious menu choices at Bistro C or simply celebrate the end of a successful day’s grind with a cold beer or cocktail.
No need to worry about being locked into long and unnecessary contract commitments either. Finns offers a multitude of options to suit every digital nomad, short term visitor or working expat ranging from one day, a week, month, quarter or year! As well as complete access to the private business centre, F&B outlets, gym and pool facilities, member benefits also include Tennis Centre use, free VIP daybeds at Finns Beach Club (Including welcome pack with every visit), food and beverage discounts at Finns Recreation Club and Finns Beach Club, Water Park Access, discounts at Body Temple Spa, Toni & Guy Hairdressers, Strike Bowling and Bounce Trampoline Centre! Say What? Question: In my daily life, there is a small handful of people whom I have come to hate. Perhaps the word “hate” is too strong, but I obsess on them even though we are not friends and we have nothing to do with each other directly. There’s the client, for example, who didn’t take my advice, and the woman who married a man with an insane amount of money. There’s the “friend” who dumped me after never having been much of a friend anyway, and the woman I gave lodging to, who now no longer even tells me when she’s coming back to the island (every 6 months or so) from her home country. I stalk each of these people on Facebook and on other online social media sites, looking for any suggestion of evidence over which I can gloat that they are unhappy. Of course, most people post only good news and smiling images of themselves; so I drive myself crazy in fantasizing their demise. In truth, when one of them actually does get ill, suffer a breakup, or lose their social position, I feel sad and empathetic. But short of witnessing their downfall, I feel only betrayed. I’ve read all the adages about focusing on people who appreciate you and forgetting those who don’t, but that’s easier said than done. Please give me a few helpful tips for disengaging myself from the obsession of stalking these people who have let me down over the years. Dr. ZZ: If all the people who have let you down in your lifetime comprise only a small handful, you may want to consider yourself fortunate. Changing their minds and breaking promises is simply one of the things people do. Too afraid to tell the truth in a particular situation, they may make false promises. Or perhaps they give their word in one moment, according to the way they feel; then, circumstances change, and they act differently than they said they would. Whatever the situation, the logical mind wants life to fit into a neatly wrapped box; yet at any given moment, you, people and situations in your life are exactly the way they are - whether you like it or not. You have certain expectation

of folks, they fail to communicate fully, or they act in ways that do not live up to your expectations. Probably out of fear, they say they will behave a certain way; then they don’t. Rather than create this into a sense of betrayal for yourself, you can strive instead to live a life with room for potential variables. Let others off the hook for being unconscious, allow for the inevitability of human fluctuations, and let yourself off the hook for being human. “Forgiveness is letting go of all hope for a better past.” Question: There’s this woman who I almost dated, but after a three-night stand (we skipped dating), she was talking about having kids. I basically said, “Slow the f*ck down,” and she said she couldn’t date a man who doesn’t want kids; I didn’t have a good answer to that. Now, ever since then, she has been contacting me every few months to tell me how much she wants me, how perfect I am, and how it wouldn’t have to be right away, but if I would just want to have kids eventually, she’d be willing to move here to Bali to be with me. I could probably just tell her “I might want kids, so let’s see what happens,” but that would be a lie because I don’t want kids. So I feel as if telling her anything differently would be misleading. Still, every time she calls, it drives me crazy because she’s all “I miss you, I want you, just tell me you’ll want to have kids.” It’s almost as if she just wants me to say I want kids in order to make her feel as if it’s okay to move here.
C/E/G-22 Nov. 17
I’m thinking that I should maybe just tell her it’s a possibility, but I’d feel yucky about doing that - especially if I’m misreading her, and she actually thinks liking her a lot is going to make me want kids, which is not going to happen. Does any of this seem like a good idea to you? Or should I just wait for someone else with no issues? Dr. ZZ: Let me get this straight: your plan is to tell her a lie in order to get her to come to Bali to live with you? Normally, this is just a bad idea and something that you should not do, but in your case the lie (“Yes, I want to have kids with you; come move to Bali to be with me”) is a horrible, terrible very bad lie with two possible outcomes: 1. You eventually confess that you don’t want kids at some point before she gets pregnant. She will be extremely hurt and angry that you made her abandon her life to come to be with you, and that you strung her along for a significant portion of her fertile years. She will hate you and will be right to do so because you are a liar and a rat. 2. Frustrated that things aren’t moving fast enough on the baby front, she will “forget” to take her birth control pills and surprise! She’ll be pregnant (and don’t give me any “I’ll just use condoms” crap.) Aren’t you happy? This is what you told each other you wanted - only she was telling the truth, and you were lying. Have fun with that unwanted child you now have to support. There is no cheese down this tunnel.

The Science of Sleep and The Mysteries of Dreams Scientists have pretty well figured out the mechanics involved in the process of sleep and dreams. At the same time they have uncovered some weird and bizarre sleepand dream-time behaviours. We all endure a sleepless night now and then; some of us more often than the rest. It comes with a busy, stressful life style, the problems and toils of our everyday existence. For most people it is a temporary nuisance at best; for others it turns into a cycle of sleep deprivation and that’s when caution is advised. When people say we cannot make up for lost sleep, they state a true fact. When we’re not getting enough sleep something happens in our brains: a significant amount of neurons -the cells that transmit nerve impulses- are destroyed and millions of synaptic connections -the links between neurons that play a huge role in memory formation- are cut. On a sustained basis the damage can be irreversible, even when we recover the sleep. There are sound reasons the medical establishment encourages a minimum of 8 hours sleep for the average adult. Sleeping less than that has been linked to a rise in depression, anxiety and psychotic episodes. Mood swings, slow metabolism and an increased appetite for junk foods have also been noted. A poor sleeping pattern disrupts your vital functions and affects your immune system, heart function and sex drive. It can lead to higher cancer risks and other physical or neurological conditions. Other results that have been observed from poor sleeping patterns are weird and bizarre behaviours exhibited during sleep, called parasomnias by scientists. Apparently some 10% of the population suffers from these. They are caused by extensive use of sleeping pills and/or antidepressants or going to sleep stressed or overexcited. Sleep-talking and sleepwalking are familiar. Some of you have maybe also experienced the sense of falling when newly asleep, or being rudely awakened by a loud bang or
noise which is only present in your head. It’s called exploding head syndrome. Ever heard of hypnic jerk? That’s when you wake up with a sudden jolt. Other sleeptime behaviours are a bit odder. Have you heard of someone habitually sleep-eating? And this is not just going down to the kitchen and grabbing a snack or something to eat out of the fridge. Some people have been known to prepare entire meals while ostensibly asleep. Obviously this is a bit more serious as it can lead to some dangerous situations involving knives, gas stoves etc. Another potentially dangerous parasomnia is physically acting out or actively participating in a particularly vivid dream. Say you dream you are Superman and can scale the walls to rescue your beloved; or you dream you are being attacked by a robber and start defending yourself, even counter attacking. Or you need to lunge for that Frisbee before it falls to the ground. Injuries sustained while suffering this type of parasomnia to the dreamer or bed partner have been all too real. It’s obvious we should try and get enough quality sleep. Many people claim they can do with much less and be fully functional. The POTUS claims he can do with anywhere from 90 minutes to 3 or 4 hours sleep a night. Other famous catnappers are inventor Nikola Tesla with 2 hours of sleep per night and US President Thomas Jefferson; astronomer Isaac Newton with 3-4 hours. Voltaire, Napoleon and Winston Churchill made do with 4 hours. Many successful entrepreneurs claim they do best on reduced sleep. There are also those who practice polyphasic sleep like Thomas Edison who just napped 20 minutes every 3 hours throughout the day and night. Leonardo Da Vinci slept for 20 minutes to 2 hours several times a day. Inventor and visionary Buckminster Fuller reportedly slept for just 30 minutes every 6 hours. Wordpress founder Matt Mullenberg says he naps 40 minutes 6 times with 2.5 hours between naps. Lest you think it is a mark of genius to sleep very little, rest assured that is not the case. Einstein needed 10 hours a
night and still managed few catnaps throughout the day. Famed investor Warren Buffet must have 8 hours worth of ZZs, as does Bill Gates. Singer Mariah Carey claims she has to sleep 15 hours to be optimally functional. She also says she cannot sleep unless some 20 humidifiers are running full blast in her sleeping quarters. Other celebrities admit to weird sleeping patterns. Olympic swimmer Marc Phelps sleeps in a special chamber with a constant air pressure equivalent to that of 8.500ft (2590 metres) altitude. Tom Cruise sleeps in a hermetic, totally sound-proof room. If you are part of that world of habitual or even occasional insomniacs, here are a few bits of advice to help you get some quality sleep: • Understand your circadian rhythms and establish a regular sleeping schedule around it by going to bed at a set time and avoiding activities that excite your brain or emotions. • Surround yourself with a dark, soothing environment. This means no TV, phone or tablet. Also keep your bedroom at a cooler temperature of 20C. • Have a bedtime ritual to prepare for a relaxing sleep: a nice hot bath, some soothing music, a bit of light reading, some yoga exercises. • Avoid junk food and sugar. Have a herbal tea instead. • Vitamin D supplements are recommended to raise the quality of your sleep. • Relax by releasing your hectic mind and meandering thoughts • Regular exercise is beneficial and conducive to good sleep • A daytime nap is Ok but keep it to no more than 30 minutes If insomnia still lingers you can consult Sleep Junkies Worldwide, a FaceBook group dispensing advice and sympathy to insomniacs. Wishing you a restful sleep tonight!

Kulture Kid!

Bali – Traditions not Standing Still – Part IV An agrarian lifestyle is the root of pretty much all tradition in Bali, and therefore the basis for ritual and ceremony – the loss of which due to mass tourism is a topic for much debate and a serious threat to Balinese culture and tradition on many levels. Not only this, but an agrarian – necessarily labour intensive – lifestyle meant that Balinese were once a lot more active and fitter than they are today. Everywhere I look at ceremonies I see borderline fatness (“big of hip and thigh” as Billy Connolly once famously larked) or just full blown clinical obesity. Lack of sidewalks, motorbikes being adopted as permanent appendages to inner thighs, fast-food, an emerging middle class, the onslaught of the mini-market phenomenon, compulsive gaming and social media addiction, as well as a general instant, throw-away, single-use consumerist lifestyle has had a visible effect on the physical health of a once active people. Understandably, many facets of the Balinese lifestyle have become uber-instant: food, drink, communication, purchases, banking, local apps such as Pro Denpasar and Simalu, and more. In terms of religion, there is even an app you can use to purchase home-delivered offerings (this understandable shocked many Balinese as making offerings is an inherent part of the devotion process). This instant purchasing of offerings is simply an extension of buying them from the markets of the ubiquitous roadside offering sellers – they just have a standardized price, are bought using internet banking and are sent to you via Gojek.

Many rituals are now either broadcast live, mostly by the worshippers themselves via FB or IG, and wedding ceremonies and tooth filing ceremonies nearly always feature big screen TVs so one doesn’t have to get off the plastic chairs to join the crowds peering at the proceedings. Live gamelan music is often replaced by recorded music where possible, and I suppose it’s only a matter of time before the dancers stay at home and send their avatars. At cremation ceremonies it is commonplace for gamelan instruments to be transported on mini-floats rather than carried strung off bamboo poles, and even for cremation towers to be placed on contraptions with wheels for ease of transportation. Only twenty years ago it was considered unthinkable to transport sacred objects in a vehicle but now barong and rangda in a sand truck is commonplace. My older gamelan teachers speak proudly of walking tens of kilometers to get to ceremonies and even days to get somewhere like Besakih Temple from South Bali: today people would simply think you’re nuts. What other technologies will Balinese take on to make ritual ceremonial life quicker and easier? It’s anybody’s guess in the unpredictable “Jaman Now”.

We are celebrating – 10 years!!!
Ok, so now you know all about them!

We are sponsoring them on July 26th and 27th at Banjar Selat Desa Buahan Kaja, Kecamatan, Payangan, Gianyar. This area is comprised of 8 banjars – Selat, Majangan, Sriteja, Tengipis, Bada, Singeperang, Tata and Pausan, with a total of 4,320 citizens!!!
Our members have decided to give back to this beautiful island and its people, many who live on the very edge of poverty with no chance of ever being able to afford eye care - something we all cherish – eyesight!! How are we doing that? We are sponsoring a 2 day healthy eye clinic run by the John Fawcett Foundation! Don’t know anything about them? Well just a few basic facts about this amazing foundation. The late John Fawcett( passed away in 2017) , from Perth Australia. After moving to Bali in 1983, worked with Rotary Australia and Rotary International, establishing a cleft palate programme then in 1991 a mobile eye clinic. Over the years, staff were trained, vehicles purchased so cataract surgery could be carried out anywhere! Now they travel all over Bali, sometimes to villages so remote you would never think a mobile eye clinic van could climb the steep terrain! They give free assistance to people of all religious/political and ethnic groups. They test eye sight; glaucoma testing and cataract testing. Free glasses are dispensed as well as medictaion; and if

ETHICAL MEAT Eating meat is so politically incorrect these days. Especially here in Ubud, where the population of glutenfree vegans per capita is probably higher than anywhere else outside south India. Many would argue that the term ‘ethical meat’ is an oxymoron. There’s abundant evidence that commercial meat production is highly damaging to the planet and cruelly harmful to the animals.
they are very prone to contagious illness, so it’s become standard to feed them daily doses of preventative antibiotics. These antibiotics are retained in the meat and passed on to the consumer, which has contributed to the worrying rise in antibiotic resistance. Some poultry operations give probiotics instead but because these are not as effective in preventing disease in overcrowded conditions, the chickens are killed earlier before they can become sick. Yes, that’s why probiotic-fed chickens are so small. Locavore recently opened Local Parts, which may be Indonesia’s first ethical butcher shop. “Local Parts sources high-quality, healthy animals directly from farms we know and trust,” Eelke explains. “The animals are all free-ranged and eat a high quality natural diet.” Local Parts is an old-fashioned butchery offering whole ducks and chickens, racks of lamb, all cuts of pork, air-dried beef and a range of fresh sausages, country pate and charcuterie made in-house.
The horrors of factory farming on concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are well known, as are the terrible conditions in which live meat animals are shipped overseas. But meat is a big part of many cultures and, especially for older people, it’s hard to change. My parents, born in 1920, ate meat at least twice a day and thought vegetarianism was downright dangerous. I grew up with the usual meat-andtwo-veg dinners at home. When I went to my grandparents’ farm where I spent most of my holidays, we ate a lot of rabbit. It took me many years to connect the long shed where my grandfather raised 500 sweet albino bunnies with the savoury pot pies we often had for dinner. They told me it was chicken. I’m ashamed to confess how old I was before I thought to question the absence of wings on my plate. We know that a carefully balanced vegetarian diet is very healthy. But some people, including the Dalai Lama, feel better with some animal protein in the diet. In any case, many of us are eating much less meat than we did 10 years ago. By endorsing ethical meat I’m suggesting that if you do eat meat, make sure that the animal had a good life and a good death. “Raising animals for meat in good conditions and with natural food is expensive,” says chef Eelke Plaismeijer of Locavore. ”The animals take longer to mature. Without preventive drugs and hormones they require much more space and care. They need plenty of high quality food. So the resulting meat is of course more expensive than CAFO meat.” And it follows that animals living without stress outside under natural light and eating wholesome food taste a lot better. When animals are raised in concentrated feeding operations
Locavore’s fresh organic lamb comes from the lush plateau of Wanasobo, Central Java. A cross between Merino and local sheep, these animals thrive on the region’s wild herbs and grasses which are fed by clean streams and rivers. The rich, free-range grazing results in a lengthy lambing season with the warmer lowlands producing their lambs first and the hardier uplands producing theirs later. This gives the Locavore kitchen access to lamb all year round. “Raising animals for meat in good conditions and with natural food is expensive,” says chef Eelke Plaismeijer of Locavore. They use Bali beef, personally selecting each steer and aging it themselves. Locavore’s Muscovy ducks come from a free-range duck farm located in Bali’s central highlands. on wide-open natural spaces, surrounded by organic cultivation. The ducks live outside, drink only filtered water and eat grass, grains, vegetables and fruits. Most pigs in Bali have very sad lives, confined in small concrete pens and fed a slurry of commercial mash laced with antibiotics. (The situation is similar in the US, Australia and Denmark; although more hygienic, the confinement is even more extreme.) This animal is very challenging to free-range; I’ve kept pigs myself and can confirm that it’s almost impossible to dissuade a pig from going somewhere else if that’s what it wants. But Bali Highland Organik (BHO), a small company in Rendang, Karangasam, has developed a system of free-ranging pigs which is bringing prosperity to local farmers and a better quality of life to the pigs in its care. Impressed by its website, I recently visited BHO to see the operation for myself. The business provides weaned piglets to participating farmers who keep them in grassy paddocks fenced with modular metal barriers. The pigs eat the grass and a mash of ground corn, soy and rice bran supplemented with fresh
papaya and banana trunks. They receive no antibiotics or growth hormones. Every 10 days they are moved to an adjacent new paddock with fresh grass and shelter from the elements. When the pigs reach about 100 kg BHO takes them back and kills them quickly by electrocution. (You don’t want to know how pigs in Bali are usually dispatched; let’s just say that it’s messy and traumatic.) Then the carcasses are dressed out and processed at the immaculate, state-of-theart kitchen beside a field of rosemary, chilis and other sausage seasonings. The farmers gradually pay back the cost of the piglets, feed and fencing through their profits. Bali Highlands Organik is currently working with five farmers and employs 25 local people, most in the processing centre. Here the meat is made into chops, bacon, ham and sausages, some smoked slowly over coffee wood. No chemicals or MSG are used in the process. Locavore’s chicken is from a co-operative of farmers marketing through Wanaprasta, which trains poor highland producers to free-range their birds. This is also very challenging since hungry dogs and neighbours take a heavy toll, as does drought and rain. Wanaprasta works with farmers and fishers in the poorest parts of Bali to produce sustainable and high quality chicken, duck, pork, fish, fruit and vegetables. It pays the farmers a good price, then processes the harvest at its government-certified production centre in Tagallalang north of Ubud. Here they produce goat cheese, pork sausages, bone broth and an ever-changing range of other artisanal products according to season. Local Parts (www.localpartsbali.com), Wanaprasta (Facebook page Wanaprasta), Bali Highland Organik (www.balihighlandsorganik.com) and a handful of other ethical meat producers I haven’t yet visited provide sustainable options for thoughtful carnivores. So if you’re going to eat meat, make an occasion of it. Have it once a week and pay the real price of ethical, free-range meat. Yes, it’s expensive. It should be.

Is food a problem for you?
THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE So you’ve got pain. Sprained your ankle. Fell off your motorbike. Surfing injury. Dislocated a shoulder from a motorbike or a horse. Too much sitting at the computer and now have lower back pain. Headaches from staring at the computer screen. Knee pain from running. Sciatica. Or simply performed an activity you’ve never done before or not for a long time like taking up surfing or horse riding and the next couple of days your body aches all over. Perhaps you have some swelling which is painful. We’ve all done these things and suffered for days or even weeks. We just want the pain to go away. Pain killers? Antiinflammatory medication? Or massage? Massage can help tremendously. From my own experience of being in a car accident, motorbike accident, simply falling on a wet surface or the most unusual of a horse pulling me off my feet and dislocating my shoulder. In every case, massage has helped me to recover, eliminate the pain and get back to being active again. But where do you go? Not your average spa or small massage place that offers relaxation massage. You need a place where the therapist knows the body system and how it works and they can understand your problem and know what to do to help you. After all its relief from pain that you want. When you’re in a lot of pain you’re willing to do just about anything for relief. Where to find relief? By chance I happened upon a small spa called Zema Healing, advertised as a healing place for: neck and back pain, frozen shoulder, knee and ankle pain, insomnia, tennis elbow and migraine. Zen heads Zema and is a master healer from Lombok, training all of his male staff who also hail from Lombok or Yogyakarta. Zen is a certified Musculoskeletal Therapist and has been practicing for ten years. You’ll see charts of the muscular system on the wall as well as reflexology charts, indicating that they are serious about healing. Although I didn’t think I had anything major wrong with my body I wanted to try Zen’s magic fingers. I had sent several friends to him for various problems like sciatica, sprained ankle, lower back pain and headache. All reported back to me that after one visit their pain was gone. Impressive record! However, for me the first thing he did was check my alignment lying face up on the massage table. Assessing my legs, torso and shoulders he informed me that one leg was longer than the other and the one shoulder was higher. He then took a few photos and showed me. Sure enough it was true. When he began working on my back he told me that my spine wasn’t straight, not scoliosis but the muscles had pulled it out of alignment. The curved spine affected my hips which caused lower back stiffness as well as upper back stiffness. No wonder I was having trouble with belly dancing movements. Zen went to work on my back and legs. His touch was gentle yet strong. Occasionally he asked if I felt pain where he was working. Usually not. He methodically worked over my back and then my legs. After I turned over he tugged on my ankle that was shorter. Then rotated each leg. Then tugged on my ankles again. Eventually he worked on my shoulders and neck. A couple of times he had me stand up and walk around a little to test the movements, then resumed his work on my body. When he finished I walked around the room and bent my body. My legs and shoulders were even, my spine was straight. Everything was looser and more flexible. All of this
was accomplished in just over an hour. And with very little discomfort inflicted in the treatment. I was impressed. Zen does have magic hands. He advised me not to shower for at least an hour for their special oil consisting of bamboo and Sumbawa oil with menthol to enhance the healing in the muscles. Similar to Tiger balm but not heating up the muscles, cooling instead he explained. This is definitely a great place to go when your body needs healing. Although the staff at Zema are well trained and experienced in alleviating many aches and pains see Zen for more serious problems at Zema Healing. Jl. Camplung Tanduk (Dynapura) No, 99. I tried out a new place called Baliman Healing Spa on Jl. Nakula. It’s a new small place with only 3 treatment rooms and a staff of six male therapists. All of the staff have a couple of years of experience in healing. They have three comfortable treatment rooms. Their specialty is Baliman Healing Massage with a choice of 75/ 90 or 120 minutes of deep tissue sports massage combining Balinese, Chinese, Swedish, Thai and Shiatsu techniques. I had a treatment with Alex one of the two senior therapists. It certainly was a deep tissue massage as he pressed his fingers into my muscles. Several areas were quite painful for me suppressing the urge to cry out. He performed quite a bit of Shiatsu type of pressure points on various parts of my body. At the end I felt like all of the tension had been squeezed out of my body leaving me feeling relaxed. Baliman Healing Spa Jl. Nakula no. 3A, Seminyak. BC Steakhouse. Jln. Raya Petitenget, evolved from the Butchers Club that had been operating on these premises for the previous year and it is a high temple for the beef-lover! By now everyone knows about their dry-aged beef, used for their steaks and in their incredible hamburgers. They also offer organic grain fed beef from Australia. It is NASAA certified organic and USDA organic and as well the cattle have been slaughtered according to Halal rules. On the menu are two cuts; Grass Fed Rib-Eye [300gm] and a Grass Fed Tenderloin [200gm]. The high quality imported Angus beef is dry aged on the premises, the prime cuts are used for the steaks, the others for their amazing burgers which are still available. During the aging process a hard and crusty mould forms on the outer surface which both protects the meat on the inside from harmful bacteria, and at the same time helps to develop the wonderful flavour of the beef, a truly unique product. The steaks can be Rump [300 gms., dry aged for 21 days], Rib Eye [350 gms., 35 days] or a Rib Chop [pictured], which is big enough for two persons @ 800 grams, it has also been dry aged for 35 days. All are served with fries, salad and your choice of sauce [peppercorn jus, horseradish cream, beer mustard or chimichurri]. The burger range includes the famous dry aged beef [single or double], pork belly, fish or vegetarian. Sake no Hana is a high class Japanese restaurant. A part of the Hakkasan Group it was first established in Mayfar, London then subsequently exported to Saudi Arabia. Now it is also in Bali at Uluwatu. Headed by Michelin guide-starred chef Hideki Hiwatashi, the restaurant offers the refined Toban and Kamameshi cuisines. The sakes, Japanese whiskeys, wines, spirits and liqueurs that are offered complement the elegant dishes. At the Sushi Bar you can watch as your order is prepared, which is the way that it should always be done. The restaurant joins the OMNIA Day Club at the Uluwatu Alila Resort. This is very fine dining, Japanese style. Cosmic Diners are styled on the American diner, somewhere you can drop in, anytime,
for a good quality snack or meal, at budget prices. There are three of them in Bali, the original on Sunset Riad, Lippo Mall in Tuban and on The ByPass at southern Sanur. I like the touch of Asian which has been added to the base American diner menu, Rice Bowls. Black Pepper Beef is shredded meat stir-fried in black pepper sauce topped with shavings of crisp onion. Pork Belly, double cooked in soy is another, sharing the bowl with a fried egg and sautéed corn kernels. Both are excellent but the Chicken version is perfect! Chicken, as fish, so often overcooked in Bali, was tender and moist. The use of chicken thighs instead of the more common breast provided more taste, a light infusion with teriyaki sauce just right, with broccoli and carrots sprinkled with garlic chips. A great simple dish!
Como Beach Club has hit the road running! The project, that was once to be a Sentosa, has taken an eternity to reach fruition and is now the Como Uma Canggu. The Beach Club is its all purpose restaurant. Way different to the budget restaurants that made Echo Beach what it is today, and obviously much more expensive but no one seems to complain due to the food, service and location. Magic beach and sea scenes are relaxing and the sunset is amazing! Their Kiwi Chef offers a menu that is full of seafood specials. Many Bali restaurants offer so called large prawns that are only little finger size, here large is large. That is often a good barometer to restaurant quality. The Beach Club is a place to linger and enjoy; eating and sipping, quality dining! What we have come to expect from this incredible group.
Soul on the Beach, at Sindhu Beach, Sanur, is a sister restaurant to the popular Soul
in a Bowl in southern Sanur. Open all day it starts with an early breakfast [bowls, omelettes, pancakes and many egg dishes, or build your own from the list of possible ingredients]. Beach and sea in the background make a pleasant start to the day. Lunch and dinner menu includes a variety of healthy [stuffed tofu, corn fritters, falafel], seafood [grilled sardines, yellow fin tuna, herb-crusted barramundi], meat [burger sliders or the real thing, duck breast salad or duck rice paper rolls, sticky chicken] and pasta [chilli prawn spaghettini, mushroom fettuccine] pizzas [most of the standard ones but all with crazy names], burgers and sandwiches. Great value in a most relaxed setting.
Above Eleven Rooftop Bar & Restaurant is an intruder from Bangkok, Thailand,
where it has been packing them in ever since 2012. It is situated at the Movenpick Resort in Jimbaran, on the rooftop, but with its own separate entrance. It can almost be called a beach club as it overlooks the sea. The Nikkei cuisine, a blend of Peruvian and Japanese food specialties, is complemented with a raw seafood bar. There is a range of Peruvian Ceviche such as the original with red onion, sweet potato and chilli or just a simple one with mango and chilli. There are also Causas [mashed potato, chilli and lime with various toppings, such as crab meat, quail egg and avocado], Tiraditos [Peruvian sashimi] and Anticuchos [grilled skewers of meat or seafood; pork neck, baby squid, chicken thighs, beef heart]. The stars of the mains are Lomo Saltado [grilled beef tenderloin with onions, chilli, coriander], and the amazing Seco de Cordero, lamb shank slow cooked in beer, chilli and coriander. There are also many sushi and sashimi options as well as a variety of seafood dishes. For such an up-market operation the prices are quite surprisingly moderate.

Simple Japanese Ryoshi Ubud has had a makeover! Closed for the month of April it has had its mandatory 5 year renovation and re-opened anew, but now with a Teppanyaki Bar included. More than 20 years in Ubud and now at its 3rd and biggest location this successful chain has come a long way since the young Sagon opened the first Ryoshi, a small but ever so popular Japanese restaurant in Seminyak, 30 years ago. One that was soon busy all day with the young Japanese surfers and their Australian friends who were at that time discovering a new surfing paradise, both attracted to the healthy Japanese cuisine. The original was later followed by similar places in Sanur and Ubud, later in Tuban and Kuta Grahe.
onion and sweet miso] or a Mushroom Steak [sautéed in soy and garlic]. Seafood snacks include a great Soft Shell Crab, cooked tempura style in rice flour batter, Kwaebi Kara Age [crispy fried whole shrimps in their shells with sea salt] or Tako No Kara Age, wonderful fried octopus, nice and crunchy. For something different, try the Cheese Mochi, sticky rice cakes with soy, butter and cheese, or the Maguro Panko, crisp fried tuna rolls with a tangy sauce.
bowl over rice, or the Noodle selection with a variety of Soba [buckwheat] and Udon [thick] noodles including the very healthy Nabeyaki Udon, the popular hot pot [pictured].
My most regular reason to visit Japanese is to enjoy a wonderful, clean, fresh plate of assorted Sushi for lunch. What could be healthier? At Ryoshi the offerings are of unbelievable value, my favourite is the Pisang combo, 12 pieces of sushi for less than $8 [the maki roll is cut into three which makes 14 in my book]. Sushi to be at its best should be prepared fresh, just for you, and not pre-prepared hours or days before and refrigerated. It always tastes best fresh!
QUICK REVIEW
The secret was no secret at all. Fresh sushi, made to order and a selection of all the other basic Japanese cuisines, most importantly all at budget prices. Now with 10 restaurants in the Ryoshi chain, and the resultant high food turnover, that most important ingredient for high quality sushi and sashimi, fresh fish, is a daily norm.
At Ryoshi you can sit and watch it being made. It arrives accompanied by a small dish, a lump of wasabi [often referred to as Japanese horseradish but tasting more like a hot mustard] on its side, and a little pile of gari [sweet thinly sliced young ginger] on the edge of the sushi board. Tip some soy [always on the table in a small jug] and edge some of the wasabi in, to your taste! Place a complete sushi in the soy/wasabi mix so it can soak into the rice base [I like it this way but the Japanese say it is wrong], then with chopsticks, or even fingers if you must, eat and savour the exquisite taste. Follow with a small slice of the gari, and a sip of whatever you are drinking. My kind of lunch!
Ryoshi Seminyak a few years ago was moved next door to much larger premises [with live Jazz upstairs] and is still very busy day and night. The menu has only marginally changed and I always look with wonder at my regular lunch of Pisang sushi selection, still 14 pieces for $8.
Ryoshi has a number of different combination boards of sushi [pictured] and sashimi [raw fish] or a combo of both. Other raw fish specials include their Tataki which is a Japanese salad of raw fish, a Tuna Carpaccio or Aji Tataki, a type of mackerel tartar. Chirashi Sushi is a bowl of various raw fish draped over sushi rice.
Ryoshi in Ubud over the years has moved from the original small cramped space in central Ubud to spacious Japanese style relaxed premises at Ubud’s south in Padang Tegal, the growing budget restaurant area of Ubud. Different rooms are all interconnected by large glass and timber walls, the seating varying from bar stools, normal western style tables and chairs and traditional on the floor Japanese seating [but cheating with a sunken well under the table so you do not have to be a yoga type]. All set in gardens interspersed with local bales.
Hot entrees include a variety of Kushiyaki [food on skewers]; Nasi, sliced eggplant with yakitori sauce, or my prefered Negi made with young leeks, Kawa, chicken skin grilled with salt and pepper, Teba [chicken wings] done the same way. Top of the list for me is their Hina, chicken and leeks in yakitori sauce, the Beef Rolls, sliced beef wrapped around julienned vegetables, Tsukune Mushroom, mushrooms stuffed with minced chicken, Ebi, salt and pepper prawns and Lebar, chicken livers in yakitori sauce. In fact I sometimes just make a meal of assorted Kushiyaki.
The original intention was to include live Jazz at Ubud as well but local politics and greed got in the way, sad proof of Ubud’s ‘closed shop’ mentality.
Most of the mains at Ryoshi are Yakimono, or grilled. Beef Teriyaki, or the Chicken or Fish equivalents everyone knows. A Teriyaki Hamburger is a touch of fusion, traditional ball of minced beef sautéed in Japanese wine and soy. Both Beef and Tuna can be had in sizzling Teppanyaki style, and then there are the Wagyu dishes; sirloin, rib eye or rump.
The menus at all Ryoshi restaurants remain the same, with the same pricing. It is a brilliant menu well illustrated with colour pictures which takes the fear factor away from any first timer. Your appetizers can be very healthy such as Edamame [steamed green soy beans sprinkled with sea salt], Agedashi Dofu [deep fried silken tofu in a hot broth], Nasu Miso [eggplant sautéed with
For the lone diner there are always the rice dishes; Zuki Don [tuna marinated in sesame and soy] Sukiyaki Don [beef] Oyako Don [chicken and egg or Katsu Don [pork cutlets] all served in a
When a place is as busy as this one you do not ever have to worry about freshness of produce. Ryoshi is one of Bali’s success stories, somewhere for an anytime snack or meal, alone of with friends.

33 WILL YOU OUTLIVE YOUR PENSION? I guess some might respond ‘yes’, some will respond ‘no’ but most will respond ‘don’t know’ or ‘only wish I knew’. But knowing to the best of your ability is important and it becomes more critical the closer you get to retirement age.
You then need to calculate all the items you will need at today’s prices. The items will include food, clothing, medical care, transport, entertainment, travel, visa and related costs if you are an expat, media and communications
Before assessing the prospects we have to consider two key questions:
Will your income hold up?
1. How long can you expect to live? 2. What provision have you made to provide income in retirement? Let’s take the first: how long can you expect to live? A first guideline would be statistics based solely on nationality. The following are recent life expectancy figures at birth for a sample of nationalities: Japan: 85 United Kingdom: 81 USA: 80 Indonesia: 73 Nigeria: 53
But this is just the starting point. As you get older your life expectancy rises also. If you reach 99 the new number could be 102. But the actuaries working for insurance companies will factor in other data such as where you live, race, family history, medical conditions, weight, smoker or non-smoker, drinking habits, lifestyle etc. Now supported by massive computer power, they can probably tell you the precise day you can expect to die. But don’t mark it in your diary yet! The statistics apply to Mr. or Mrs. Average and are based on moving projections which even you can help change to a degree. Mortality predictions are of critical importance to life insurance companies as they have to offer competitive products but still ensure they make a profit. What is a little scary is that Artificial Intelligence is taking over some of the tasks of the actuaries. Consequently some people could find themselves ineligible for insurance cover or find their premiums are heavily loaded based solely on what the computer tells the insurance company. They say that perfect financial planning entails spending your money frugally in retirement so that it runs out on the day you die and your cheque to the undertaker bounces. That’s a little hard on undertakers but it’s also going to be tough for you the next day if the predictions are wrong and you are still alive but with no more money! What is the next step? Clearly you need to make some allowance for the possibility that you are going to live a lot longer than Mr. or Mrs. Average. So now you need to calculate how much you are going to need. If you own the home you live in you may no longer have a mortgage to pay off but don’t overlook the other costs that come with home ownership such as local taxes, utilities, maintenance, repairs etc. And all these costs are likely to rise. If you do not own a property you are going to have to estimate rental costs, another item that will escalate over the years.
etc., etc.
Now you have digested the bad news, you need to add together all the sources of income you expect to receive upon retirement. They may include state, company or personal pensions or annuities, income from financial investments, property rentals, interest on deposits etc. Will they be sufficient to match the outgoings you have calculated? And will income from those sources increase in line with inflation? Only by doing the arithmetic will you be able to make an initial assessment.

Inflation is the big threat to those on a fixed income For the past few years most countries have enjoyed fairly benign inflation and low interest rates. But the signs are that inflation is now picking up. The currency you use is another factor. It means that a deposit account in a currency such as the Rupiah can pay you a much higher rate of interest but the higher rate can be wiped out by the relative devaluation of the currency. An important factor to consider if you plan to retire in Bali for example. To illustrate the impact of inflation you can use a mathematical tool known as the ‘Rule of 70’. It is not precise but close enough to provide a good rule of thumb estimate. The way it works is that if you take a given level of inflation, let’s say 5% per annum, divide it into 70 and it will tell you in how many years the purchasing value of your money will be halved, in this case 14 years. Should inflation reach 10% you are looking at just 7 years. Another 7

years at the same rate and your fixed income from say an annuity or frozen pension (as suffered by many UK retirees in Bali) will be getting close to worthless. Once you have the figures, where do you go from there? The fact is that many, if not most people, will find there is a shortfall. There may be a big gap between the dream and reality. If time to retirement is short, some will panic and risk falling into one of two traps. The first is driven by fear and results in staying ‘safe’ and keeping all assets in cash. There is a new term for this: ‘reckless conservatism’. The second is to seek out investments promising high returns, only to discover they result in heavy losses. So what is the best strategy to follow? The answer is not a simple one; there is no ‘one size fits all’ so I will explore the options in my next article. Do write if you have any related questions I can address, anonymously of course, four weeks from now.

Kites Festival (3 July – end of August)
With the start of windy season the skies in Bali are being populated by kites of all sizes and colours. Kite flying is serious business here, as befits an old practice that started off as an agrarian festival to thank the Gods for abundant crops and harvests. It has evolved into a competitive event that involves entire communities who form kite teams to build the huge kites and compete for glory and prize money. Typically constructed from lightweight materials these kites can reach gargantuan sizes, measuring 4m across and 10m in length, not counting the tail which in itself can reach a length of 100m or more. Some feature intricately carved heads, some look like giant fish or birds. The main and most famous competition takes place at Padanggalak Beach in Sanur although most villages will stage their own competitions locally. Depending on wind conditions, these contests play out throughout the months of July, August and into September. Bravo! Cultural Performances Are you hosting guests who want to take in a performance of Balinese culture? You are all in luck; this is the best time of year for Bali’s unique arts. Here are just a few possibilities, and let this article lead you to do your own further googling. I can’t fit in all of Bali’s wonderful options, so I apologize to those troupes whose areas and acts I missed mentioning. *Bali Arts Festival, June 23 - July 21, daily; first show 11 am; last shows start at 8 pm. Taman Werdhi Budaya (Bali Arts Center) Jalan Nusa Indah, Denpasar. The scoop: Well worth a visit! Talents from Bali’s many regencies (and, some years, other nations) get the spotlight on several different stages, including a massive amphitheatre. This year, it’s the 40th festival, with the theme, Fire as the Spirit of Creation. It’s a true slice of local life, celebrating Bali’s traditional actors, musicians, crafts people, and dancers. Looking for innovation? Show up on the 9th of July, for Pesel Arts’ gamelan, and the 10th, for Tindak Alit dance company. Download the online schedule at disbud.baliprov. go.id/id/The-40th-Bali-Arts-Festival-2018. Tips: the lineup is always subject to change, so it can be fun to just show up when you have time. The crafts exhibits can be first rate, often displaying and selling fine, original work. Free Admission. *Ubud: This is Old Faithful. Nightly except for high holy days, year-round; easy to get tickets right at the venue, high standards of artistry. Families can grab supper at 5:30 or 6 and walk to a 7 or 7:30 performance, as most are centrally located. Some of the venues are pure magic (like Taman Saraswati or Junjungan) and there is always time at the end of the presentation to get a photo op with the costumed performers. My tips: I can never get enough of the dynamism of Kecak (men’s Cak chanting). Each troupe and venue brings a slightly different ‘take’ on this 1930’s mélange of dancers staging Sita’s kidnapping (see Ramayana epic) and the otherworldly, percussive chorus as vocal accompaniment / monkey tribe. When program concludes with a trance dance, you get additional thrills and danger (hot coals); great for most kids. Full moon and new moon nights offer punters a prized chance to see the blazing Cak Rina performance at

ARMA (Agung Rai Museum of Art). Great dramatic impact in this fiery battle of good and evil. Hot ticket: Jegog, the bamboo orchestra transplanted from Jembrana regency. Ubud’s got two flashy troupes presenting this gorgeously sonorous music. When the emcee calls on audience members to sit onstage for the final number, don’t hesitate to grab some real estate under one of the huge bass instruments to sit and enjoy the thunder. Wednesday Ubud Pura Dalem, Friday & Sunday Bentuyung village.
that, with a couple of outstanding options: Devdan Show in Devdan Theatre, Nusa Dua complex. 7:30 to 9:00 nightly. Search online for the best deals. I’ve had success with govoyagin.com which also offers transport. Devdan attracts the tour bus hordes, but independents show up as well. More faithful to Las Vegas than Bali in terms of tradition and culture, it is still entertaining in that inspired-byIndonesia way, and acrobatics add pizazz. Devdan seats range approx. Rp 490,000 - 1,560,000. Bali Agung Show at the Bali Safari and Marine Park is every afternoon at 2:30 except Mondays. With a cast of 150, plus ducks and big cats and elephants, this is Bali’s glitziest hour. I Made Sidia, world-famous dalang (priestly puppetmaster) and creator of marvelous shadow puppet extravaganzas, had his hand in creating this nearly a decade ago. The show retells an Indonesian legend and is included in some park admission ticket packages. Admission to Bali Agung Show ranges Rp 720,000 - 2,140,200 with various attraction and ride combos.
Ubud performance schedule: ubudcommunity.com/list-ofperformance/ ; also lists upcoming religious ceremonies. Admission for Ubud performances range is Rp70,000 to 100,000 per person. Go in advance to the Ubud Tourism Office at the corner of Jalan Raya Ubud and Jalan Monkey Forest if you don’t want to risk waiting to buy at the door. Touts on the street are legitimately selling tickets for face value. If you’re approached by someone selling the show you want, it’s nice to buy from them (often they are moms getting pin money commissions, or teens earning some cash). *All in the Family: Why not ask your Balinese staff or friends if their village is going to have a ceremony or festival involving dance, puppets, or a drama? Foreigners donning sash and sarong are welcomed, and the insider who extended the invitation is pleased to offer good seating and make everyone feel welcome. My banjar has also put on teen talent shows, totally secular, as well as bachelor parties, which are great fun and the whole evening has a true kampong atmosphere with good-natured heckling by friends and a great variety of acts. Superb for that guest who prizes authenticity. *Grand Scale: For every guest who says they don’t want anything “touristy”, there is one who will want to be seated in a proper theatre with air conditioning. Fortunately, Bali has
Ok, so it’s not air-conditioned, but there is the sunset-timed Kecak spectacularly held near Uluwatu Temple. Some online reviews remark on its overcrowding and occasional audience insensitivity. Rp100,000 at the door. You can always consider the option of taking friends to restaurants advertising dinner shows where Joged or other dancers will entice members of the audience to join them. Good option for that special someone who can’t sit still for an hour without food or drink to distract them. Save the dates: July 14 -15: Kite Festival at Masceti Beach, Gianyar August 10 – 11 Ubud Village Jazz Festival, ARMA, Ubud August 22 - 26 Sanur Village Festival, Hotel Inna Grand Bali Beach I’m always open to suggestions and upcoming notices of arts events: mala.arts.bali@gmail.com
