Royal Venya Ubud Master Piece Projects by Metland
Advertorial
Best Investment in Bali the Royal Venya Ubud and offer strata title ownership of its villas, with guaranteed return of investment (ROI) of 24 percent during the first three years. This up-front 3 year investment guarantee will be given to each unit owner. Another advantage is that buyers who later become villa owners at Royal Venya Ubud can also enjoy their stay with a point system and earn up to 48 points per year. Based on solid projections Metland is confident that the yearly rental yield will remain stable and is expected to increase in the following years along with the rate of inflation and the impact of demand-supply on the luxury lodging market in Bali. As the leading property developer in Indonesia PT. Metropolitan Land Tbk (Metland) is proud to announce it has launched its newest project in Bali. It is Royal Venya Ubud, a luxury villa complex and hotel resort located on a majestic hillside close to Ubud. Royal Venya Ubud is built on a hillside area of 1.7 ha, evoking the contours of typical terraced rice fields in the area. The project has a total of 59 villa units and 21 hotel rooms. Seven different types of villas are available with a choice of one or two bedrooms in one or two-story units. The building area per unit ranges from 48m² to 124m². The villas are fully furnished and feature private pools. The common areas with shared facilities at Royal Venya Ubud include a spa, lounge, coffee shop terrace, cascading infinity pool, reflecting pond and outdoor bar, wedding chapel, funicular and a Balinese temple. This luxury villa project is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery and shaded by many trees to provide a calm, cool and soothing feeling. Bali is still a prime destination for tourists and becoming even more popular with increasing numbers of both domestic and foreign tourist visiting Bali every year. This was one of the encouraging reasons for Metland to build
Metland has more than 20 years experience in the property sector and has been managing the Seminyak Bali Horizon strata hotel since 2012. We feel that investing in Royal Venya Ubud is the right choice for investors because we are optimistic that Royal Venya Ubud will become a new icon in the Ubud region as a preferred place to stay for domestic and foreign tourists.
The town of Ubud in beautiful Gianyar regency is one of the favourite tourist stopovers in Bali because of its ensconced location between rice fields and forests, awe-inspiring ravines and mountains with very spectacular natural scenery. Thanks to its fame as a preferred tourist destination, land prices in Ubud have been increasing each year and property values in this area will continue to rise. Royal Venya Ubud occupies a strategic location in the tourist area of Ubud, known as a centre for arts and culture and is surrounded by famous attractions such as the Monkey Forest, Ubud Palace, Tegallang rice field terraces, Bali Bird Park, Elephant Cave, the Jatiluwih rice fields, Campuhan Hill and many more. In order to create a comfortable and elegant villa environment on each building lot of the Royal Venya Ubud development, Metland has collaborated with several local and international consultants. The design consultant for Royal Venya Ubud is from the USA. The development of Royal Venya Ubud adds lustre to Metland’s portfolio of commercial projects, especially hotels and to Metland’s portfolios of up-market products that appeal to the upper middle class segment.

Of Food Scams & in Search of the Best Cuppa By Paracelsus Asia
The world of food is passing strange. Bean sprouts, romaine lettuce, a bad egg or oyster, all of these could kill you in next to no time if you ate unlucky. Yet you can eat junk food till the cows come home and it’s a lot less likely to kill you. In the end though, it just might as your arteries clog up. Genetically modified food is even less likely to put you six feet under, though anything that Monsanto sells is probably bad for us one way or another. Strictly speaking, as yet there’s no overwhelming evidence to say GMOs are bad for you; just as there is no overwhelming evidence that they’re any good. No matter whatever anybody says, the science is unclear and nobody knows for sure. Truth be told, you are just as likely to be fed bad food that is neither fresh nor nutritious in a health food bar as you are in a MacDonalds or any goormay up-itself restaurant you care to name. Research tells us that probably the healthiest way of all to eat and increase longevity, is to eat less. Junk or not, don’t make no odds. The only thing we have going for us and is any kind of reliable guide in what is nutritionally a very wicked world, is our common sense and our taste buds. That is if they are not too blunted and beffudled by the addictions we have acquired along the way. All you really have to know if you wish to eat well, is... is it it fresh? Does it taste nice? If it doesn’t, it is neither fresh nor nutritious. Properly used herbs can enhance food, but spices are historically employed to disguise poor ingredients. If you spice heavily, your taste buds are almost certainly too buggered-up for you to tell if your food is fresh or not. That doesn’t just go for individual taste, it’s true for entire national cuisines. Thai cuisine I’d say is the second best in the world, but only if you eliminate the chili. The best? Southern Italian, unquestionably. It’s all about fresh ingredients, herbs and knowing enough not to ruin the texture or flavour in the cooking. The rest is either artifice, chicanery, or a cover-up. In the fresh stakes, few do it better than the Japanese, so I’d have to give them the bronze. In order not to make any more enemies than I already have, let me quickly add; Cantonese cooking can be great, its the integrity of the ingredients that worries me; as for the rest of Chinese food you can keep it. And, as for France? For fresh produce it’s hard to beat, its the cuisine that’s overrated. I mean have you seen what the French do to pasta? I’ll say no more. On No! Not my Cuppa... One of the saddest things about all this is that one of the most natural and pleasant of health-giving substances, one that is drunk in copious quantities all over the world, is by no means immune to the vile machinations of unscrupulous growers and manufacturers. As an Englishman who has spend half his adult life in culturally Sinitic lands I am addicted to black tea, taken straight, no milk no sugar. I like coffee but could live without it. Not so tea. Over the years I have probably consumed lakefuls of the elixir. It was one of the reasons I suppose that I have managed to survive as long as I have in relative good nick. Now I’m not so sure....
I always suspected the low end teabag manufacturers were selling the dust sweepings along with low grade leaves and it doesn’t surprise me in the least that the bags themselves are made with questionable materials. It’s why, wherever possible, I buy loose tea. I thought fondly that loose tea was invariably a purer and tastier buy. Many of us tend to make the same assumption when it comes to herbal and other natural non-caffeine teas or infusions. Alas, whatever tea is your tipple, whatever the source, the cost or the delivery, via loose leaves or in bags, you remain vulnerable to the depredations of unscrupulous suppliers. Take Celestial Seasonings for example, the definition of archetyple hippie tipple launched back in 1969 in Boulder, Colorado; at one stage of my life when for a good few years I drank no caffeine, I used a tea from them called Emperor’s Choice, mainly because it seemed to have more if a kick to it replacing the tanin and caffeine I missed. What I didn’t know was that by 1984 Celestial Seasonings had already sold out to Kraft and in 2000 was “merged” with the Hain Food Group, a company that has made a habit of acquiring and debasing products that either were or had the reputation of being “natural”. After a while I reverted to my natural inclination for loose black tea and now usually buy Twinings Earl Grey or Assam teas by the tin or Chinese Puerh tea. You can usually tell if Chinese Puerh is good or not, because the low grade stuff has a faint mouldy smell to it. Any food stuff out of China needs to be viewed with circumspection. Looking into it more closely I came across the findings from independent labs Eurofin Scientific commissioned by Glaucus Research and was disconcerted to find Twinings by no means got a clean bill of health. In fact many of today’s tea brands are operating under the guise of providing health benefits and promoting clean living, but are actually laden with cancer promoting pesticides and toxins, artificial ingredients, added flavors and GMOs. Most tea is not even washed before it is put it into bags and that means if the tea was sprayed with cancer-causing pesticides, those pesticides go directly into your cup. That’s why it’s best to buy organic tea.
C/Re/G-7 Nov. 18
Here’s how the Eurofin rap sheet reads: Pesticides: Allegro, Celestial Seasonings, Lipton, Mighty Leaf, Republic of Tea, Tazo, Tea Forte, Teavana, Tetley, Trader Joe’s, Twinings. Natural Flavours: Allegro, Bigelow, Celestial Seasonings, Mighty Leaf, Republic of Tea,Tazo, Teavana, Tea Forte, Trader Joe’s, Twinings, Yogi. Artificial Flavours: Bigelow, Teavana GMOs: Celestial Seasonings,Lipton, Mighty leaf, Tea Forte Harmful Packaging (teabags): Celestial Seasoning, Lipton, Tazo, Tea Forte, Teavana, Tetley, Twinings. Some things to note from the above: The two most dangerous categories above are Pesticides and Harmful Packaging (the teabags) since these contain substances that can cause cancer and/or are toxic. Natural Flavors can mean absolutely anything; good, bad or indifferent. Ground up gravel is natural but no one would say it’s good for you. Same goes for Artificial Flavours (crude oil or coal tar with your tea anyone?). Other things of note: Celestial Seasonings is consistently the worst offender. Wise to steer clear of all Hain Ceslestial Food Group products, they are not an honest company. Supposedly up-market suppliers like Republic of Tea, Tazo, Teavana (one of their teas contained no less than 23 different pesticides) and Twinings do not show up well on the most risky categories. In the light of this I’m now seriously in the market to replace Twinings for my loose teas. As a light user of herbal teas I’ll simply avoid the labels listed on the Eurofin rap sheet. Anyone know an Earl Grey, loose with a good Chinese flavour and not overly bergamoty?

The True Gift Is In The Giving… Recreation Club foyer, serving as a fitting centrepiece for the most festive month of the year. Not only adorned with tinsel, bells and baubles, the tree also bears far more important decorations in the form of tags, each featuring the name, photo and description of every child at the orphanage along with their Xmas wish. Unlike some of the requests we hear from our own children, these wishes are for simple necessities or items many of us may take for granted.
For many kids across the globe, December 25th dawns with an excited dash down the stairs to see what Santa has dropped by the night before, but not every child enjoys the blessings of basic finances or even family to experience a Christmas the likes of most. Children who find themselves at orphanages like Jodie O’Shea House are simply grateful for the daily gifts of a safe place to sleep, three squares a day and the chance at an education before pondering the possibility of a brightly wrapped present under the Christmas tree. In an effort to add some extra joy to the lives of these underprivileged youngsters, Finns Bali is delighted to bring you the Jodie O’Shea Wishing Tree. What began as part of Finns’ association and sponsorship of this Bali orphanage has become an annual Christmas tradition, now in its fifth year running! From December 1, the large tree takes pride of place in the Finns
Members, guests and friends of Finns are invited to select one tag or several then purchase the ‘wish’ recorded on the card for that child. Be sure to take the tags to the Finns reception team before you leave so that they can record the details and names of the child/children selected. Presents can be dropped back to Finns reception anytime prior to December 25th. The JOS kids have been invited to enjoy lunch and activities at the Recreation Club on Christmas Day, at which time they will be presented with their gifts. The aim of the Wishing Tree is to ensure that each child from the orphanage receives a little something extra on Christmas Day. It’s not so much about the gift, more the opportunity to give and the chance to allow everyone, irrespective of background, religion or circumstance to feel special. The Wishing Tree already stands resplendent in Finns foyer. Take a little time to stop and select a tag. It doesn’t take much more money or effort to add an extra item to your shopping trolley but it might mean the world to someone less fortunate. Make December the month of giving and have a Merry Christmas! FINNSRECCLUB.COM

Trouble in Paradise
Hello Darkness, My Old Friend
By Dr Anastasia Belikova
You are a pretty well-functioning individual. You probably have income or you figured out ways around needing to have an income (equally commendable). You might be doing a good job raising kids (be they of the flesh-and-blood or work-project kind). You have people who like you, you like yourself (sometimes). You do alright (you are in Bali, for christsakes).
And then there are these days. The days when the biggest achievement is brushing your teeth. The days when you feel like a complete and total loser. When heavy thunder clouds follow you around and you rain viciousness on heinous peace offenders like loud chewers. Or maybe you walk around with foggy beehive of a head feeling confused, overwhelmed and plain sad. We all have them. Our dark days. The buzz-off-to-the-whole-world days. Indecently, my favorite days are the bad days. Let me tell them why I love them and why so should you. First thing first, what makes bad days bad? Often we call ‘bad’ something unusual, something that we don’t really understand and cannot, therefore, figure how to control or fit into our steady lives. Something not according to plan. We (instinctively) crave the safety of stability, and we abhor chaos and uncertainty. But let’s get real, stability is not an accurate description of reality. Things just don’t stay in orderly neat structures forever. From the smallest to the largest most complicated thing you can possibly imagine, everything goes through changes. All living organisms age and die. Mountains get worn down into the sand. Stars cool down, explode and get reabsorbed into planets. Whole galaxies collide, merge and even disappear. ‘Change is the
only constant’ (Heraclitus). And embedded in the process of change is disintegration, collapse, and chaos. This is a difficult concept to accept. We are taught to define what we want and go for it. We are not taught to adapt or accept, we are taught to dominate. Collapse scares us. To be unable to have what we want is a cause for depression. One of the most common and most difficult emotion that people bring to therapy sessions is the feeling of self-inadequacy (or its forms, like jealousy). We simply cannot stand the sharpness of the ‘not’ – not being, not having, not achieving. Bad day is often a day of feeling bad about ourselves. To master the art of life is to master the art of transition. It’s about getting good not only in doing and achieving but also in surrendering, losing control, failing. It’s very much like surfing – you are not controlling the waves, you are waiting for the wave that feels right to you. You know you have to wait for it, you accept that you will miss some awesome waves, you accept that some waves will come crashing on you, confusing you, pulling you down. Exactly the same with the life-waves. Let yourself be in a difficult space. Let yourself be confused. Let yourself not know what exactly is going to happen next. Which brings me to the next kind of prickly days. Many people define days as good or bad in terms of productivity. A day when you can’t be bothered to do work or unable to produce good work is a bad day. When you are not creating, making, improving or outputting. And usually, this lull is a result of being overtaken by ‘bad’ emotions. So unproductive badness is very often intertwined with emotional badness of being unable to switch from an undesirable emotional state into a desirable productive/ happy/social state. Feelings that are not sunny and fluffy are bad. It’s bad to be low, unstable, to want to cry, eat copious amounts of chocolate and watch silly movies. Wanting to rage, crush and destroy is bad. Or is it? The worst thing you can do is succumb to the tyranny of ‘should’ - ‘I shouldn’t be like this’, ‘I should be doing that instead’… We surrounded ourselves with wonderfully everproducing machines that are always there for us at a press of the button (until they break of course). But you, my friend, are not a machine. You are a thing of nature. And like anything in nature you have seasons. Not a single alive thing in this universe operates in a straight upward trajectory. Life is a pulsatory event -everything exists in cycles
(including our earlier order – chaos – reorder cycle). An up is followed by a down. The night comes after the day. Barren winter inevitably follows the warmer months of abundance. The emptying, the laying low, the silence, the nourishment – our type-A world with type-A dreams and type-A lifestyles have forgotten how to effectively do these things (I’ll come back to the fact of poor self-nourishment in the next column). The uncomfortable is abolished. We live in an age of spiritual bypassing – we hop from practice to practice that will make us feel better, if just for a moment. At the slightest tug of a heart we grab a drink, a friend, a fun distraction of some sort. But negative emotions, no emotions, and difficult emotions are not the states to be banished, ignored or fought. If you are willing to stay with the edgy feelings, bad days will tell you what’s not right in your life, who’s not right in your life. Bad days are honest - they smack you with the sharpness of realization of which need is not met. They tell you which promises to yourself you haven’t kept, which dreams you filed away in a neat cabinet of ‘later’. Bad days blow up the neat and demand attention now. Bad days bring pain, and pain is one of the (if not THE) strongest motivators for change. And this is precisely why I love the ‘bad’ days. Incidentally, Bali is a wonderful place for relearning how to embrace emotional realism. Here the darkness is workshopped along with the light, the ugly along with the beautiful. Here the natural is not embarrassing. Here the feminine soft energy governs, encouraging to slow down and reassess. Not a bad place for bad days. YOUNG AUTHORS MAKE DEALS It seems that entrepreneurs start young in Bali! In a project designed to help them appreciate literature, learn some skills about business and inspire other youth, Ubud brothers Dante, 10, and Alessandro, 7, have each written a book and are learning how to do an Amazon launch so they can officially become international authors. This dynamic duo – mother from Ubud, Dad an expat - have created all their own artwork, done their own negotiations with sponsors and made promotional videos. Their learning includes the highs - such as a personal sponsorship from an impressed ex-Microsoft director - and the lows, when organisations promise support and then change their minds, or the printer eventually charges a lot more than his original quote. They seek more sponsors who will back them so that they can afford to print more copies of their books, and have recently sent their manuscripts to a publishing house, on request. More info at www.dnabooks.net, or by emailing alessandro@carmazzi.net. You will find them in person on the lawns at BaliSpirit Festival, where they will personally sign your purchases. SUPPORTING POOR WOMEN Over the past decade, non-profit organisation Bali WISE has educated more than 1,225 marginalised Indonesian women, with an 85% success rate in helping young women gain quality jobs and empower their home communities. Generous donations from sponsors make the program possible. Yanti, one of last semester’s top graduates, is from Karangasem. She is the only child of a widow who has earned only 500,000rp per month as a farmer since her husband died when Yanti was a baby. Yanti could not continue her study after graduating from high school, but was fortunate enough to join the Bali WISE program in April this year. She has since completed her three-month Basic Work and Life Skills Training, then was highly praised by her supervisor during her job training in the spa department at Ungasan Clifftop Resort, where she now works as a spa therapist. She is delighted to be earning a living for herself and well on the way to her dream of supporting her mother financially. For more information on Bali WISE and how to sponsor a student, donate to the program or take a cultural tour of successful Bali WISE projects, visit http://baliwise.org/.
ROTARY CHRISTMAS DINNER
MUD VISA RUN!
Bali Rotary Club, Ubud Sunset, works year round to raise funds for local projects, with Rotarians also offering their assistance to programs supporting displaced people around Mount Agung and in Lombok.
Here’s my best recommendation for a December visa run!
When you attend their Christmas Dinner or get involved in any other Rotary fundraising event, you are supporting the many Rotary projects that help local Balinese communities and schools. These focus on sanitation, safe drinking water, health care - including doctor and dental visits to local schools, and community eye checks.

Visit KL – home to one of the friendliest and most efficient Indonesian embassies – and check out the award-winning MUD the Musical: The Story of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, in its revival this month. A few years ago I learnt a lot about the founding fathers and early settlers of 1800s KL, when I saw this highly engaging and interactive musical on my own visa run. It is performed in English, Bahasa, smatterings of Mandarin and Tamil, this time with the original cast mentoring a troupe of young aspiring actors from Enfinitia Academy.
Performed at THE PLATFORM at Menara KEN, from December 14 to 19. CROQUET ANYONE? I don’t know if cucumber sandwiches are on the menu, but I’m sure you can bring some. There’s something delightful about the thought of having a very traditional “British Raj” croquet game in the midst of Ubud’s lush tropical splendour.
Originally an initiative of the BGreener group, it’s something that all our best enviro-friendly, customerfocused businesses in Ubud are taking on, both the biggies like Taksu Spa (southern end of Jl Goutama) and the Yoga Barn (off Jl Pengosekan), and lots of little places too. Yes and not coincidentally the program helps free Bali from the beeeep plastic menace! Travellers can find RefillMyBottle stations all over Asia, from Labuan Bajo is Indonesia’s west, to Singapore, Malaysia, Bhutan, India, Vietnam, and Japan, and in parts of East Africa, Europe and California. It won’t be long before we can refill our bottle everywhere. Bad luck for bottled water sellers, but great news for the environment.
For more information or to download the app, go to : The Ubud Croquet Club is tucked away behind the wide www.refillmybottle.com. bamboo gates at 26 Jalan Sandat, just north of Jl Raya Ubud. Members are a very interesting and eclectic group of ex-pats, who welcome visitors with big smiles - and spare croquet mallets (in case you haven’t got one in your backpack). Join in for a game or two every Monday. It is free and fun. Start up is at 9.30am, so be there a little early to introduce yourself.

I’ve been writing Food Glorious Food for eleven years and have enjoyed working on every issue. My passion for food inspired each column. Driven to experiment with flavors and techniques, I shared my excitement with you, my readers. Sadly, this is my last recipe for Bali Advertiser. I want to thank all of you who have used my ideas and hopefully were inspired to create your own. For this last column I leave you with a fantastic chicken dish that will have your family and guests raving.
Garlicky Chicken With Lemon-Anchovy Sauce Serves 3-4 Ingredients - 4 chicken thighs - salt and pepper to taste - 10 cloves of garlic, smashed and peeled - 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil - 12 canned anchovy filets - 4 Tbl. capers, soaked in water for 30 minutes, rinsed, and patted dry - 2 pinches of dry chili flakes - 2 lemons, halved - 4 Tbl. chopped fresh parsley
C/He/G-7 Nov. 18
Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Season the chicken with salt and pepper on both sides and set it aside while preparing the rest of the ingredients. Mince two of the garlic cloves and set aside. In a large oven proof frying pan, heat the oil over medium heat. When it’s hot add the remaining smashed garlic cloves, the anchovy fillets, capers, and the chili flakes. Stir this continually breaking up the anchovy fillets and cooking until the garlic is browned – 3-5 minutes. Add the chicken thighs and brown 5-7 minutes each side. Place the pan in the preheated oven and cook for 20-30 minutes or until the thighs are cooked through. When the chicken is done remove the pan from the oven and transfer the chicken to a plate. Put the skillet over a medium heat and add the minced garlic and the juice of one of the lemons. Stir and cook this for about a minute, scraping up any browned bits from the side and bottom of the pan. Return the chicken to the pan and heat for about 30 seconds. Transfer the chicken and all the sauce to a serving plate and squeeze the other lemon over it. Garnish with the chopped parsley. Selamat Makan !

At Home in Bali
Design ideas and inspiration for tropical living “Let’s send her out of town and remodel her whole house in two days!” A friend was intent on ignoring a significant birthday. We thought differently. Fuelled by one too many cocktails, we arrived at the arguably reckless decision to do up her home in secret - an extreme home makeover if you will. It’s amazing what can be achieved by a group of friends with an abundance of ideas, boundless enthusiasm, an endless supply of coffee, and a Machiavellian instinct for secrecy. A month and many brainstorming meetings, action spreadsheets and shopping trips later, we had everything organised right down to the last detail. We’d sat at her table pulling the wool over her eyes and whipping out a tape measure whenever her back was turned. Her friends from Bali and beyond had donated home items and money to buy what was needed. My home was groaning under the weight of supplies hidden away out of sight; she tended to drop in unannounced, and one occasion caught a friend dropping off bedlinen, thankfully wrapped in black plastic bags… “For the next clothes swap”, I improvised. And we’d manoeuvred her into making a rare overnight trip away from Ubud in the company of, and in collusion with, friends. Minutes after she left her house at 9am, we - eight friends, four staff, two handymen, and a kelompok of painters swarmed in and set to work. We had until 4pm the next day. I thought about this makeover when writing in the last issue about Alej Cisneros and her tips for refreshing a home. Presciently, we seem to have followed the advice she shared. Here’s how: Paint everything white The entire house received a facelift with Nippon Spotless White Lace paint. It isn’t the cheapest, but lasts much longer and ensures the house won’t need to be painted again. The colour is a soft warm white, and it lifted the entire space. Add colour Colour can be effectively used to define different spaces in an open plan living area. By painting a strong statement colour on one wall and at the same time painting the blue kitchen wall white, we placed emphasis on the seating area - the social heart of the house. That rich burgundy- perfect for a wine enthusiast - was also the prime colour in a dreamy semi-transparent curtain that extended the impact of the statement wall and screened a private seating area

outside the bedroom. (We hemmed 10 metres of gorgeous Indian sari Alta Moda fabric on the spot and draped it over a piece of bamboo found in the garden.) We picked up the accent colour in the Indian fabric, and covered new cushions in a deep teal twill found in Jalan Sulawesi and made by Zidni at D’Zone on the Andong Road (who delivered them in the nick of time, a heart-palpitating half-hour before the return of the birthday girl).
a place to retreat in supreme comfort, nesting on goose-down pillows covered in crisp 100% cotton bedding on a new duvet and pillows (from Tenaga Bahru on Jalan Imam Bonjol). Such luxury encourages deep sleep, revelatory dreams, and lazy lie-ins! Consider modifying furniture To create a more comfortable seating area, we added hardboard all around the L-shaped concrete dining bench to extend the depth to 75cm and allow a space for legs to tuck under, then added new mattress cushions - perfect for quick naps or extra house guests. This simple modification turned out to be perhaps the most transformative, and the most commented on by subsequent dinner guests. Check if you are fully using the house Opening up the bedroom to the terrace by moving the daybed created a better flow and somehow activated the space and made it more usable. The same happened in the hallway, where shifting around furniture created space for a gallery of paintings and artefacts.
Improve lighting It was fun shopping for new lighting in Denpasar, Kuta and Ubud. We chose art-deco style wall lighting for the bedroom, added bright spots for the kitchen and pendant lights in the hallway, used gentle spots on some of the artwork, and converted a huge chicken basket into a contemporary pendant light over the dining table. All bulbs were replaced with warm energy-saving LEDs. Mirrors also have an impact on lighting. We added a strip of mirror along the full length of the kitchen above the tiles, and angled it so that it reflected garden greenery. Add glamour to the bedroom Painting the bedroom white and white-washing the bedeg ceiling transformed this space, helped by changing the lighting, and moving (or removing) furniture in order to open the mosquito-screened double doors onto the terrace. To declutter the space, we built a storage cupboard, and made provision for the creation of a walk-in wardrobe utilising an existing door onto a small patio, (also freeing up space in the hallway where clothes were currently being kept). Consider new bedding Thanks to another friend, the antique Chinese bed became
Add floor mats A confession. This is one thing we didn’t anticipate. Rather than adding mats, we actually took them away. For the low-down on what happened to her oriental rugs, read www.baliadvertiser.biz/on-the-carpet. Yes, dear reader, the recipient of this home-improvementby-stealth surprise was our very own Greenspeak columnist Ibu Cat. “It was the most gobsmacking, mind-blowingly amazing birthday present ever conceived…my fresh and delightful new house looks like something out of a magazine.” Have you completed a home makeover? Bali’s Recording Studios Get Wired for Sound by Anita
There is little doubt that Bali fosters creativity, both among its residents and visitors. Whether you are professional musician looking to cut some tracks or just someone who performs in the privacy of your own shower, Bali’s recording studios can make composing tunes a breeze. Decked out with the latest equipment, here are five music studios to give your vocal cords a workout. Swarapadi Billing itself as the first resort-style recording studio in Bali, Swarapadi translates to the sound of rice paddies in Indonesian. This name seems pretty apt for a studio and villa combo that is fringed by verdant rice fields and coconut trees. Set just outside the center of Ubud, the recording studio regularly plays host to musicians, songwriters, DJs and producers looking for peaceful surroundings to compose and record.
The recording studio has been designed according to the principle of LEDE (live end, dead end), where the area around the monitors is ‘dead,’ or made absorbent acoustically, and the reminder of the room is ‘live’ or reflective. The control room comes equipped with highend analog and digital equipment, including a 9000-J series console, which features a total recall and moving fader automation. There is also a selection of microphones from renowned brands such as Neumann, DPA, Beyerdynamic, AKG, JZ and Audio Technical.
Masterminded by the brand’s North American Music Director DJ White Shadow, the studio has been designed with both quality and style in mind. The space features locally-sourced wooden furniture and hand-woven rugs. These are complemented by a large print of a 1980s boom box by Lyle Owerko and an oversized photography print. Multi-level lighting system, a minibar, and GoPro and LiveStream cameras complete the picture.
Didi says that Swarapadi often connects its guests with local session players-a particularly appealing proposition for those who want to incorporate traditional Balinese instruments into their music. There is also a sound engineer on hand, but guests are welcome to bring their own entourage. “We have had Gus Teja do sessions with our clients in the past. We have also had some local musicians from the Seminyak area visit us to do a session with a number of guests.”
Bali Praia
Designed in a modern Balinese style, the four-bedroom (the rooms can be rented individually) villa blends with its tropical environment to maximize inspiration. The property features a 17-meter swimming pool, a spa and massage room, as well as a media room where guests can watch movies or play video games in their downtime between sessions. www.swarapadi.com W Sound Suite
Swarapadi’s Managing Director, Didi Hanafi, opened the venue in 2010 when he noticed the lack of professional recording studios in Bali. Over the years, Swarapadi has gone from strength to strength, welcoming well-known names such as Nick Jonas, Noah Cyrus, Delta Goodrem, Ruby Rose, and many more whose photos now appear on the studio’s wall of fame. “We figured that if musicians or music producers could work and enjoy a holiday in Bali at the same time, that would be an awesome combination,” Didi says. “Being able to record, eat and sleep without leaving the comfort of a villa is a very unique experience.”
The W Sound Suite is W Hotel’s first recording studio-W Hotel Barcelona, W Hotel Seattle and W Hotel Hollywood have since followed suit. A part of the W Retreat and Spa Bali in Seminyak, the soundproof space has seen its fair share of professional recording artists, studio musicians, producers, as well as tourists (hotel guests can book the suite for a private masterclass with W Hotel’s music curator). Large enough to fit an entourage, the W Sound Suite consists of a private vocal booth overlooking a lush garden and a mixing room equipped with professional gear from popular names such as Native Instruments, Pioneer and Moog.

Located in the center of Seminyak, the Bali Praia Recording Studio features all the cutting-edge equipment a musician may need to achieve either contemporary or more vintage analog sound. Guests are also welcome to utilize the venue’s music production programs such as Ableton Live and Logic Pro X. The neighboring lounge can accommodate up to 40 people, and comes with a 3D projection mapping system, a 5000-Watt VOID sound system, and cameras for recording Facebook and YouTubeLive videos. The venue can arrange a sound engineer on request, and offers beginner and advance DJ courses. Bali Praia holds regular events and has played host to the likes of David Penn, Chus & Ceballos and Dennis Cruz. www.balipraia.com Boom Box Recording Studios With a state-of-the-art recording studio and karaoke rooms, anybody can be a star at Hard Rock Hotel Bali’s Boom Box Recording Studios. Budding artists can even record their karaoke efforts. There is also a resident sound engineer on hand to pave your way to success. More affordable than most other options on the island, the recording studio can be hired per hour at a very reasonable rate. You can even hire a Fender guitar overnight to aid your efforts and take some great shots as souvenirs. bali.hardrockhotels.net Copyright © 2018 ParacelsusAsia You can read all past articles of BA Feature Article at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Siapa... ? Benoît Prim is 44-year-old engineer born and bred in France who has lived and worked in Australia, the Philippines and Indonesia. He has 19 years of experience in large scale renewable energy projects, providing technical advice and due diligence services for investors in wind and solar projects in France, Australia, Indonesia, India and Korea. Benoît has been actively involved in raising awareness about renewable energy and sustainability in international schools in Bali. A father of two French/Australian/Venezuelan children, Benoît lives with his Venezuelan wife Mercedes in Berawa, Bali.

Benoit Prim: Champion of Renewable Energy By Bill Dalton
more willing to take a sustainable approach to business, there’s real opportunity to boost solar panels penetration on Bali even with little government support. With this in mind, I started a Bali-based solar panels company called Inecosolar this year. But I quickly realized that, going beyond just solar energy, education must play a major role in expanding sustainability practices here. People just aren’t aware how much havoc their (in)actions will wreak on the environment, a state of affairs that will ultimately have serious adverse impacts on themselves and their kids.
How did protection of the environment become so important to you? I experienced first-hand the effects of pollution. While growing up on the Mediterranean Sea in the south of France, I was fortunate enough to take up two sports that would shape my life: surfing and windsurfing. Spending a lot of free time in the water, one of my most vivid memories occurred while I was surfing in southern France. I encountered an oil slick from a tanker that had cleaned out its tanks offshore. It was not a massive spill – the balls were only 2 cm in diameter - but the oil was so sticky that it took days to get it off my skin and surfboard. This incident made me realize how humans can so easily and thoughtlessly damage the beautiful environment that we’ve all been blessed with. It prompted me to choose a profession in which I could put my energy into a good cause and become part of the solution. When did you first get interested in renewable energy? I got involved in renewable energy projects right after graduating with a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering in France in 2000. I started working on hydro and wind projects before migrating to Australia. My love of surfing inspired me to move to Australia where I spent more than 10 years of my life. Later in 2015, I got involved in solar projects in the Philippines at the time of a gold rush in the industry due to generous policies supporting solar energy. What projects have you worked on in Indonesia? I was involved in the first two utility scale wind farms built in the country, among the largest onshore wind turbines in the world: 135 m rotor diameter by 135 m hub in height. Each of these powerful machines in South Sulawesi can provide electricity for up to 8,000 households. What are the chances of Bali adopting solar energy on a large scale? With the large number of expatriates on the island who know about solar and the tourism industry that is more and
What are the chances for the large-scale adoption of renewable energy in Indonesia? The chances are high but, regulation permitting, the question is when? Indonesia has good renewable energy resources and already has lots of geothermal and hydro power already installed. However, Indonesia is historically a gas and coal rich country with 88% of its electricity generated from fossil fuels. This is not going to change anytime soon, but generating electricity from wind energy is now cheaper than coal, nuclear, diesel and most gasbased generation. Electricity demand is growing, so rather than building new coal power plants, renewable energy presents a credible and cost-effective option. How is Indonesia’s progress in finding alternative sources of energy compare with other countries?
What is your approach to educating children? I promote sustainability awareness in schools. Although it’s difficult to change grownup’s habits, kids are much more open to new ideas. They are literally the future. I explain to them the serious consequences that result from the irresponsible disposal of waste, food, water and energy and get them to find their own solutions. In Australia, there’s a campaign to save water called ‘Every Drop Counts.’ I strongly believe that this same consciousness must be applied to sustainability at large. Every action and every piece of plastic saved or recycled counts. As consumers, we have the choice to refuse to buy products which don’t adhere to sound environmental practices. Companies will stop producing such products if we stop buying them. They will always want to sell products and will adapt to meet the market demand. We need to let them know how we feel! Have you done any installations for properties that are completely off the grid? I have not yet personally but I work with designers, suppliers and installer who have done them and I have more and more enquiries for off-grid projects. Solar + battery is a great alternative to reduce or replace diesel use in remote areas. In Indonesia, there are 23 million people who do not have access to electricity. The main issue is funding but there are more and more development finance institutions willing to support these kinds of projects, so hopefully more people will benefit from cleaner energy sources in the future.
I’m in Manila these days on assignment for the European Union which aims at identifying the market potential for private sector involvement in renewable energy. We are looking for opportunities for the EU to support companies or projects that want to improve energy access for off-grid populations by replacing diesel generated energy with renewable energy or implement entirely new renewable energy projects. We’re meeting with all the main stakeholders involved in renewable energy in the Philippines: government, financial institutions, donors, associations, developers and suppliers and there are many opportunities despite regulation uncertainties. I’ve found that change is actually driven by individuals and companies’ internal policies rather than government policies. Some commit to renewable energy or are even forbidden to invest in fossil fuel projects given the risks these projects represent both in terms of investment and public image. What will happen if no action is taken on the alternative energy front? The energy market is very different in Indonesia than in other S. E. Asian countries but hopefully we’ll witness deep going changes in the future. It has to be done. Where there’s a will, there is way. Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines represent approximately 80% of all existing and planned coal power stations in S.E. Asia. World Bank President Jim Yong Kim was quoted saying ‘If the entire region implements their coal-based plans right now, I think we are finished.’ That says it all.

22 and the more ROTARY HOUSES that can be built, the more effective the program will be in providing relief for the many victims.
Rotary Activities in Nusa Dua The major interests of Rotary Clubs around the world are pretty much the same – to make a difference to the lives of less fortunate groups in the community through supportive projects, programs and activities of various types; to raise funds to cover the costs of these programs; to attract new members to help maintain the momentum; and to have fun while we are doing it! RC Bali Nusa Dua has been doing this now for 25 years, and this year has been busier than most. In April, we celebrated our Silver Jubilee with a 25th Anniversary Gala Evening at the Hilton Bali Resort, entertaining 180 guests and raising over Rp 100 million for our continuing program. But the reality of life for many in Indonesia is never far away ..... Rotary Response to Lombok Earthquakes The earthquakes that rocked Lombok from the end of July until end of August 2018 damaged 83,352 structures on Lombok and left more than 300,000 homeless. Rotary Clubs in Bali were quick to react, and within only a few days were on the ground in Lombok, delivering essential supplies, shelter materials and medical assistance to as
many as possible. A Rotary Disaster Relief (RDR) Committee was formed with Nyoman Suastika as the Chair, to ensure that Rotary’s efforts would be directed and coordinated to achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness. After listening to a presentation from Past President Budi Laksono from Rotary Club Semarang Pandawa, Rotarians including District Governor I Wayan Suryawan, PDG Hanny Arianto and other PDGs and senior figures, it was decided that the RDR would raise funds to build temporary housing in an INDONESIA ROTARY VILLAGE, with donations from all Rotary Clubs in both District 3420 and District 3410 (Java and Sumatra), individual Rotarians, their families and their friends. The concept is that small prefabricated houses can be built and erected very cheaply, from cheap but good quality materials, with a size of 3.6 X 3.6 m for around Rp 6 million. These will provide good accommodation and shelter, particularly through the wet season that will soon make life more difficult for the many displaced people in Lombok. ROTARY HOUSE is a HUNANTARA (short for Huni Sementara meaning to live in temporarily). The houses have an expected useful life of three years and will help get residents through the upcoming raining season which of course is very much needed by everyone who has lost their home.
As of today there are 77 individuals, clubs and companies and also Rotary friends who have contributed to realizing the ROTARY VILLAGE – and if you would like to donate to this very worthwhile program, please see instructions at the end of this article. Fore… Some More Houses! On September 9 RC Bali Nusa Dua held its 18th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, one of Bali’s most popular tournaments. This year we had a special reason to work hard - the Club pledged to donate 50% of the funds raised from its auction fund-raising program to Lombok Earthquake Relief (with the rest needed to maintain our ongoing projects for HIV/ AIDS, Cleft Lip and Palate operations, free prosthetic legs, school scholarships for economically disadvantaged youth, and other important activities that make a difference throughout Bali). That fifty percent came to a little over IDR 42 million, which will provide an additional 7 shelter units to Rotary’s program for the residents of Karang Bedil Hamlet, Gondang Village, North Lombok bringing the total housing units built until mid-October to 119 units! To learn more, to donate or get involved in the community come join us for lunch - we warmly welcome anyone who is looking for opportunities to make a difference in our community. RC Bali Nusa Dua meets every Thursday for lunch 12.30-1.00PM at Bali National Golf Resort Clubhouse). More info and contact details can be found on our website, https://rotarybali.org.
‘KAMPUNG ROTARY’ is located in Karang Bedil Hamlet, Gondang Village, Gangga District, North Lombok Regency and will provide units for 112 families. A second, ‘KAMPUNG ROTARY 2’ will house 50 families in West Lombok Regency, while plans are also being made for ‘KAMPUNG ROTARY 3’ to be located in East Lombok Regency . Several houses in Gondang Village are already occupied,

The Frugal Balinist Q Terima Kasih! For those interested in learning Bahasa Indonesia more quickly and easily, check out Shaun and Cici’s “Learning Indonesian” website: www.learningindonesian. com which offers a FREE downloadable series of MP3 selfstudy guides along with some written guides following the lessons that are also free. You can buy the full premium package if you want but for most learners the freebie series is totally adequate. The audio lessons provide an excellent foundation in Indonesian and make a great supplement to any textbook. The app is very easy to follow, and the combination of verbal lessons and study guides reinforces the content from the speakers. The lessons are exceptionally well organized and broken up into manageable bite-sized topics that last for about 10 minutes. Note: Some audio files are extremely large, so the Internet speed where you live in Bali may not able to download them.
Q Rider Alert. It’s hardly worth buying a used motorbike and putting it in your name on Bali because of the nearly superhuman persistence it takes for processing the administrative paperwork required to do it yourself. It’s far easier – albeit more expensive - to pay someone to do it all for you: 1. Look around where you live or in the nearest town for a small office with a sign BIRO JASA. He’s a go-between and will process it for a fee; 2. Go to a SAMSAT office and wander around looking lost. CALOs (sharks) will be on you in a flash and they will do it all for you, again, for a handsome fee. *Good used manual (gigi) motorbikes on Bali can be bought for Rp3 juta and automatic (metik) motorbikes can be bought for only around Rp5 juta. But you don’t have to go to all the trouble putting the machine in your name. Keep it in the former owner’s name, but make sure to get the title (BPKB) and a copy of his KTP, so you don’t miss paying the vehicle tax (pajak kendaraan bermotor) on time every year. *When renting a motorbike, look for one in good condition. Check brakes and tires carefully. Always wear a full-face helmet, which is mandatory. Police will definitely flag you down if not wearing one. Don’t speed and be especially careful at road junctions. Give way. Avoid riding in remote areas at night when it’s difficult to ride on narrow, shoulderless roads against oncoming traffic. Start early in the morning and finish riding by evening.

the income or savings to build or buy things they want. Any family legally residing in Bali with a KK, KTP and enough collateral (assets) is eligible. An agent in the cooperative borrows money from a local bank, such as state-owned BPD Bali, at a 10.07% rate, then charges the borrower around 25%. The shorter the payback time, the less interest is charged. The agent may offer Rp50 juta or Rp500 juta so you can visit far-off family members, buy a car or build a hotel. Though it’s tempting, it will turn out to be very costly. For example, if you borrow Rp5 juta, you have to pay interest as high as Rp250,000/month. If you know someone on the staff of the koperasi and don’t want to borrow too much (say, Rp1, 2 or 5 million rupiah for emergency purposes), they will often not even require a BPKB (vehicle title) or certifikat tanah (land certificate) as collateral. For a small business startup, it’s cheaper to borrow money (up to around Rp20 juta) from KUR (Kredit Usaha Rakyat), a lending service that every bank is required to offer. A KUR loan offered by BRI has the lowest interest.
Q I can’t breathe! Denpasar is routinely considered one of the most polluted cities in the world, an environment that causes heart and respiratory diseases, lung cancer, asthma and bronchial inflammation. Download the Air Visual app to receive a message each day about the city’s shocking air quality. The recording method and wind direction certainly influence the data but when you are stuck in Denpasar traffic or behind an exhaust-spewing truck on a motorbike, it’s not difficult to guess where all the pollution is coming from. If still not convinced, just breathe deeply and see how you feel. To prevent the toxic, health-damaging particles from lodging deep inside your lungs and entering the blood stream: 1) limit the use of your car on highly polluted days; 2) don’t walk on busy streets during rush hour; 3) if you have to walk in the city, lift your child above the level of vehicle exhaust; 4) limit spending time at traffic hotspots such as cars stopped at traffic lights; 5) when doing physical activity outdoors, exercise in the city’s less polluted areas; 5) refrain from burning waste!
Q TravelWise. A unique and comfortable alternative way to get to Central Java from Bali is to first take the ferry from Gilimanuk to Banyuwangi and then board the Wijaya Kusuma Train connecting Banyuwangi and Cilicap, leaving at 11:05 am and arriving in Cilicap at 4:42 am the next morning. *Passenger traffic in Indonesia tripled to nearly 97 million from 2005 to 2017, the same year that Lion Air controlled 51% of the domestic market. *High speed accidents are pretty rare on Bali, most being of the fender bender variety. *The new electric Powered Mobility Device (PMD) is excellent for people with walking problems. Known as Travelscoots, they are foldable, the battery recharges as you pedal, they don’t need to be registered and the wheels are big enough so it can run over potholes on a footpath or road. *The most popular site used by Indonesians to find flights, trains and hotels as cheap as Rp80,000/night is www.pegipegi.com.
Tariffs are even cheaper if you bargain or stay multiple days. Use it for finding exciting travel destinations from their social media, website and mobile application. Booking from the website or mobile application is easy with various payment methods offered (bank transfer, credit card or instalments). Pegipegi customer service is always ready to assist, but only in Indonesian. *Bluebird is Bali’s most reputable metered taxi company. Though officially it’s only allowed to drop customers at Ngurah Rai airport, go up to the top floor of the international departure terminal and quickly hop into a Bluebird taxi that has just delivered customers to the departure terminal.
Q Beware easy money. Don’t let people you love fall for attractive rates offered by an agent of one of the 172 Koperasi Simpan Pinjam (Savings and Borrowing Association), a sort of credit union for small and medium sized businesses. The aim is to make money available to people who don’t have
a new computer tablet to replace a tablet with a broken screen. The ASUS service center in Bali can charge up to Rp2 juta just for the screen, but the whole tablet from Texas, USA costs just Rp1.8 juta delivered to Sanur. You’re also able to track it. It’s not expensive if you buy small items because they are shipped for free (but don’t try to buy a refrigerator). Some international ebay sellers ship to Bali, and some don’t, but if you connect to the Internet via a VPN, you appear to be in whatever country you wish.

Restaurant & Food
Snack, Sip and Sunset! By Gerry Williams
The Bali Dream is, for many tourists, the image of relaxing by a Bali beach in a trendy bar/cafe, sipping exotic cocktails and picking at gourmet snacks as the sun sets over this tropical paradise.
are served in the style of that popular Thai entrée, translated as ‘money bags’, minced chicken in a thin crisp wrapping [pictured] with spicy aioli dip.
Many resorts and stand alone restaurants are aware of this and charge accordingly, some even levying an entrance fee as well. I have found one that apart from being idyllic actually DECREASES their charges during the sunset hours and then again later in the evening.
Roasted Beef Bruschettas are beef rolled on toasted baguette slices topped with a mix of BBQ and mayonnaise. Shrimp Fire Crackers are prawns deep-fried on a tempura batter. Chicken Winglets are with a tangy BBQ sauce. All excellent finger food,
Happy Hours at the Tree Bar are from 5.00 till 7.00 p.m and again from 9.00 till 10.00 in the evening when all wines by the glass [24 to select from], beers and cocktail prices are actually REDUCED by 50%. To add to your relaxed mood an acoustic trio performs during the sunset hours [Fridays and Saturdays] with a mood DJ on other nights. The Tree Bar is an attractive two level structure built around two giant trees, beachfront at the Maya Sanur resort. These days architects far too often demolish trees rather than build around them. The food, snacks and even full meals at the Tree Bar all come from the very professional kitchen at their adjoining fine dining Reef restaurant. Not only is the location perfect, so is their tasty snack menu. There are all of those standard bar snacks; olives, onion rings [remoulade sauce], potato wedges [spiced] and Japanese Endamame [steamed soy beans with sea salt] plus many more exotic options. The tasty Chicken Wontons
The Salt & Pepper Squid arrives in a small bucket of generous size, all of which are small bite-sized tender pieces, the dip is soy and red pepper [just enough to keep up the thirst]. The Spring Rolls can be either local [deep fried crisp vegetarian ones with a sweet and sour sauce or Vietnamese fresh rolls, just vegetarian or with prawn added, both served with the classic nuoc tuong sauce [soy, fish oil and chilli]
QUICK REVIEW Restaurant : Tree Bar. Address : Maya Sanur, Jln. Danau Tambling, Sanur. Telephone : 849.7800. Open : 10.00 a.m.to 12,00 midnight. Air-Conditioning : Natural sea breeze. Parking : Secure parking in basement. Price : Rp. 350,000 for two [+ drinks]. Credit Cards : Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, JCB. Food : International. Wine : Excellent list, by glass or bottle. Service : Relaxed and casual yet still professional. Atmosphere : Holiday time. Overall : Great value.
A Mexican touch, Nachos with Spicy Beef [jalapeno, red beans] or just guacamole. More filling is the Chicken Quesadilla. Every week there is a special Grill menu comprising both seafood [live] and meats. To finish try the Sanur Cendol, a mix of various fruits of rice jellies of seaweed, palm seed and jackfruit with coconut syrup and sorbet, very refreshing! However if you prefer a more extensive meal then you can order from the full Reef menu instead. A chilled Vichyssoise, or Tuna Sashimi, a healthy basket of Quinoa and Rocket with chick peas, lemon, garlic, cumin, turmeric, zucchini, parsley and Pecorino cheese. Reef is famous for its seafood mains, both live via the grill or from the wok. Whilst we are used to finding quality at 5 star resorts it is a pleasant surprise to also find such great value. A wonderful place to relax at the end of the day, or anytme.

Cafe des Artistes in Jln. Bisma, Ubud,
has always been the innovator amongst the moderately priced restaurants of Ubud. It is one of those places that seem to have been there forever, and in Bali terms it almost has. Going on for 20 years and still always busy is an achievement of which to be proud. The secret is that there are no surprises for the constantly returning guests. The same smiling staff and a menu of only minor changes, that favourite dish is almost always still there. Simple but well prepared comfort food, mainly of European origin. Their steaks [both local and imported] have always been their main attraction, although their monthly specials are also very popular. This coming month of December [including Christmas and New Year] the specials are entrees of Salmon Mousse on toast, well spiced or Herb and Tomato stuffed Portobello with fried leeks. The mains are either a Steak Diane [pictured, a tenderloin of beef with broccoli gratin and parsley potatoes] or Sesame Crusted Tuna with a veggie skewer, garlic mash and orange/ginger dip. Dessert is White Chocolate Mousse with strawberry coulis. All dishes are separately priced so you can construct your own meal as you wish. During World War II Melbourne’s famous Hotel Australia dining room used to feature Steak Diane, cooked tableside. It proved very popular with visiting American servicemen stationed in Australia at that time and rumour has it that when they returned home to the USA a version of this dish began to appear on menus there.

The Fat Turtle is small and cozy. It is so small that you can easily miss it [near to Deus Machina] on Jln. Petitenget. Its specialty is all day breakfasts or brunch. They have all of the standard options plus a few exotics including that American breakfast norm of Pancakes. Brew Me is a specialty tea house on The ByPass on the southern side of Sanur with an amazing range of different tasting teas. Many of the teas are in-house creations such as the Iced Cranberry Tea. Coffee is also available as well as a substantial menu of local and international food. Sakanaya shares a space with Ramen Boy but not the opening hours as it closes mid
evening at 9.00. It is operated by the Ryoshi chain of restaurants and offers the many ways of eating fish, Japanese style. Fresh seafood is packed in iced display cabinets in the inside air-conditioned area. Outside Sakanaya shares the terrace with its neighbour, Ramen Boy. Prawns can be black [tiger] or white [normal]. Either can be cooked for you battered, in breadcrumbs or poached Cajun style. They usually have up to 9 different varieties of fish, depending on the days availability, and you can order as Sashimi, grilled, fried, battered, bread-crumbed or also poached Cajun style. It is perhaps Bali’s most popular wet fish retailer.
C/R/I-7 Nov 18
Kalamansi is a new stylish Indonesian restaurant on Jln. Raya Batu Bulan, an extension of the popular Odette restaurants in Ubud. With ample parking in front and air-con inside, it is all very professional. Standard Indonesian entrees include Otak-Otak [minced fish and spices wrapped in banana leaf] and a range of different satays. Kroket Kentang are of chicken and mashed potato, crumbed and deep fried. Batagor are dumplings of a combined chicken, prawn and tofu whilst Asinan Udang are tiger prawns tossed in a spicy salad. Nasi Campur is a feature of Kalamansi but only available for lunch [10.00 a,m to 1.00 p.m.], you select from a variety of dishes and small portions are served with rice. The mains are mainly Chicken; Ayam Betutu, Sambal Matah, Goreng or Asem [spicy tomato]. Ayam Panggang Manis is first marinated with BBQ sauce, then grilled. The Vegetarian menu includes Eggplant & Snake Beans and Kamgkung Tempe, water spinach and tempe. The rice and noodle dishes can be combined with a sambal of your choice; Ijo, Merah, Matah. There is also a small’International’ menu of a few Spaghetti options, Hot Dogs [chicken and cheese], Mini Chicken Burgers and Sandwiches [crunchy baguettes] filled with shredded duck++ or a sweet and spicy tempe. The Beetroot Carpaccio is combined with mint yoghurt, red berries, cashews and feta. The only thing surprisingly missing at Kalamansi is alcohol. No cocktails or wine only mocktails, juices and coffees, amazing for such a quality place. This is Bali not Aceh! Tulen is outside of Ubud in the northern village of Junjungan [Jln. Sri Wedari], it is in a perfect Bali rural setting of rice paddies and trees [so far]. While the menu highlights most popular Balinese and Indonesian dishes there is also a full International menu, including many vegetarian options.
Folk is on Jln. Monkey Forest in central Ubud yet offers a swim-up bar. There is an entrance fee if you intend to swim [includes a towel] and a larger one for a sunbed area of up to 4 persons [includes plates of snacks]. The restaurant has been operating for quite some time but to the rear of it has been added this pool bar area [what used to be one of the many Spas operating by Paris]. The food is diverse; smoothie bowls, cumin spiced pumpkin sandwich and a wide variety of salads. The soft shell crab burger is one of Folk’s most popular dishes. Bakso Boedjangan on the ByPass at Kuta Grahe sells Bali’s most popular street food [meat balls in a noodle broth] in the comfort of a restaurant, although the flavours are a bit watered down [not as spicy] on what you get from the street vendors. The beef and cheese bakso is one of the most popular. NC/R/G-5 Dec. 18

Post Natal Depression
PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH The talk of the town this week is the tragic story of a young American woman who threw her baby out of a car window and then attempted suicide herself. The baby unfortunately did not survive, the woman is now left wondering what in the world happened? The birth of a baby can trigger a jumble of powerful emotions, from excitement and joy to fear and anxiety. But it can also result in something you might not expect - depression. Most new mums experience postpartum “baby blues” after childbirth, which commonly include mood swings, crying spells, anxiety and difficulty sleeping. Baby blues typically begin within the first two to three days after delivery, and may last for up to two weeks.
Why Do Women Harm Their Babies? By Kim Patra Postpartum depression signs and symptoms may include: • Depressed mood or severe mood swings • Excessive crying • Difficulty bonding with your baby • Withdrawing from family and friends • Loss of appetite or eating much more than usual • Inability to sleep (insomnia) or sleeping too much • Overwhelming fatigue or loss of energy • Reduced interest and pleasure in activities you used to enjoy • Intense irritability and anger • Fear that you’re not a good mother • Hopelessness • Feelings of worthlessness, shame, guilt or inadequacy • Diminished ability to think clearly, concentrate or make decisions • Restlessness • Severe anxiety and panic attacks • Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide Untreated, postpartum depression may last for many months or longer.
It’s important to call your doctor as soon as possible if the signs and symptoms of depression have any of these features: • Don’t fade after two weeks • Are getting worse • Make it hard for you to care for your baby • Make it hard to complete everyday tasks • Include thoughts of harming yourself or your baby

However, your risk increases if: • You have a history of depression, either during pregnancy or at other times • You have bipolar disorder • You had postpartum depression after a previous pregnancy • You have family members who’ve had depression or other mood disorders • You’ve experienced stressful events during the past year, such as pregnancy complications, illness or job loss • Your baby has health problems or other special needs • You have twins, triplets or other multiple births • You have difficulty breast-feeding • You’re having problems in your relationship with your spouse or significant other • You have a weak support system • You have financial problems
With postpartum psychosis - a rare condition that typically develops within the first week after delivery - the signs and symptoms are severe. But some new moms experience a more severe, longlasting form of depression known as postpartum depression. Rarely, an extreme mood disorder called postpartum psychosis also may develop after childbirth. Postpartum depression isn’t a character flaw or a weakness. Sometimes it’s simply a complication of giving birth. If you have postpartum depression, prompt treatment can help you manage your symptoms and help you bond with your baby. Baby blues symptoms • Mood swings • Anxiety • Sadness • Irritability • Feeling overwhelmed • Crying • Reduced concentration • Appetite problems • Trouble sleeping Postpartum depression symptoms Postpartum depression may be mistaken for baby blues at first - but the signs and symptoms are more intense and last longer, and may eventually interfere with your ability to care for your baby and handle other daily tasks. Symptoms usually develop within the first few weeks after giving birth, but may begin earlier - during pregnancy - or later - up to a year or more after birth.
Signs and symptoms may include: • Confusion and disorientation • Obsessive thoughts about your baby • Hallucinations and delusions • Sleep disturbances • Excessive energy and agitation • Paranoia • Attempts to harm yourself or your baby Postpartum psychosis may lead to life-threatening thoughts or behaviors and requires immediate treatment. Postpartum depression in new fathers Yes …new fathers can experience postpartum depression, too! They may feel sad or fatigued, be overwhelmed, experience anxiety, or have changes in their usual eating and sleeping patterns - the same symptoms mothers with postpartum depression experience. Fathers who are young, have a history of depression, experience relationship problems or are struggling financially are most at risk of postpartum depression. When to see a doctor If you’re feeling depressed after your baby’s birth, you may be reluctant or embarrassed to admit it. But if you experience any symptoms of postpartum baby blues or postpartum depression, call your doctor and schedule an appointment. If you have symptoms that suggest you may have postpartum psychosis, get help immediately.

Helping a friend or loved one People with depression may not recognize or acknowledge that they’re depressed. They may not be aware of signs and symptoms of depression. If you suspect that a friend or loved one has postpartum depression or is developing postpartum psychosis, help them seek medical attention immediately. Don’t wait and hope for improvement. Risk factors Any new mom can experience postpartum depression and it can develop after the birth of any child, not just the first.
Never be ashamed to put up your hand for help. YOU ARE NOT A BAD PARENT and you are not alone ☺

BOOMER CORNER A Dose of Reality My husband, Bob, first started showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease, in the year 2000 when I almost died of a strangulated intestine here in Bali. That trauma changed our lives forever. Suddenly my protector, my white knight, my business partner, my soul mate, my best friend, changed in a way that alerted our friends that something was seriously wrong. The competent Bob they’d always known crumpled before their eyes, unable to even dial a phone while I lay on the brink of death. Over the next months, I healed from the emergency surgery, but Bob did not.
When Alzheimer’s Comes Knocking by Susan Tereba
often the hard way, how to enter his world and give him the best life possible, until he passed away in March 2014. Alzheimer Tsunami There are approximately 47 million people with dementia in the world, according to the 2017 report by Alzheimer’s Disease International. The tide is growing into a tsunami as this statistic doubles every 20 years. It’s been estimated that people over the age of 65 have a 1 in 14 chance of developing Alzheimer’s, while after 80 there is a 1 in 6 chance. More women than men will develop the disease. In a double whammy, women make up 66% of family caregivers, according to the Family Caregiver Alliance. They write that while men do give assistance, female caregivers might spend as much as 50% more time providing care than their male counterparts. This taxing work challenges us down to our core. A study found that female caregivers suffer anxiety or depression six times more than non-caregivers. And a large percentage of caregivers die before the person they are caring for, simply because the stress is never-ending. There are over 15 million caregivers in America alone, and that’s just for dementia. Many other chronic illnesses require family care as well, like a friend in Hawaii who became a full-time carer for her adult son after he survived a tropical disease that left him brain-damaged and unable to live on his own.
In those months it was apparent that something long-term was wrong. With a strong history of Alzheimer’s in his family, we thought it prudent to have him tested. The man evaluating the test said, “I hope my brain will be in as good a shape as yours, Bob, when I’m your age.” That was just what we wanted to hear. Relief cooled our anxiety and we smiled as we gathered our things. Bob was helping me on with my coat when the man said, almost as an afterthought, “It is possible that Bob might have Mild Cognitive Impairment or MCI, but that would require another $500 test.” We didn’t follow up. The Veil of Denial That was the beginning of our fourteen-year journey into Alz World, as I call it. With our heads firmly in the sand of denial, we led our dream life as we always had at home in Bali, traveling and running our carving business until that sand was blown away by reality and we had to face the fact that Bob had Alzheimer’s. The veil of denial had protected us for a period, but when reality left us exposed to the hardships of Alz World, we found we were ill prepared. I slid into the role of Bob’s primary caregiver while taking over more of our business as he could do less. I learned,
In meeting other caregivers, the one thing all have in common is finding the time for respite. The grueling dayto-day of repeated questioning, incontinence, lack of short-term memory, disruptive behaviors, delusion, paranoia, non-rational thinking, problem-solving difficulty, and other symptoms of Alzheimer’s takes a heavy toll. Finding Caregivers After 9 years of caring for Bob with our staff’s help, it was time to get dedicated caregivers. I felt I was hanging on by my fingernails. Several people answered my ad in the Bali Advertiser but no one had experience dealing with dementia. In the end, I found two Balinese men willing to learn. They were smart and had natural caregiving abilities because they’d had grandparents who’d become ‘pikun’, which translates to senile in Bahasa Indonesian. In the Balinese culture, you don’t send your elderly away if they get difficult. You adapt around them. While these caregivers were a huge help to me, the intensity of living with a person with dementia for ten years wore me out. I knew I had to find an alternative living situation for Bob. Serendipity lent a helping hand. Within a month of deciding to move Bob, I had a cottage and four caregivers lined up. These men were not only Bob’s caregivers but became his friends for the next four years, until he passed away.
Care Facility in Bali Besides finding people to train to take care of your loved one at home, the good news is that when it gets too difficult there is a care facility available here in Bali. Sada Jiwa Bali Healthy Aging Facility is an assisted living center north of Mengwi. To see their details visit their website: www.sadajiwabali.com. This affordable resortlike residential property has a full-time medical staff, ambulance, therapy room, and programs for the residents. I know of two expats who have parents there and are pleased with the care they receive. If you are thinking you’d like to bring a loved one with dementia here for care though, be warned, it can be complicated if the person isn’t already living in Bali with a proper visa. Last year, I met a Dutch woman, Ratna, whose father has Alzheimer’s. Born in Indonesia, he dreamed to return and spend his last years here. A Dutch citizen living in Holland since he was six-years-old, he had forgotten most of the language but still had long-term memories of his early life here. Ratna worked hard to find him a place to live and people to take care of him, but when they had to go to immigration to extend their tourist visas, the official there said her father was not welcome back in the country and stamped his passport as such. His dream to live here was dashed. In Conclusion There is no denying that Alzheimer’s disease takes a terrible toll on both the patient and their family. But if you are an expat living in Bali there is help and respite at affordable prices. If you’d like to know more about the caregiving experience, please check out my TEDx talk at https://bit.ly/2TQz5I3. For a more in-depth look at being a caregiver and lessons learned along the way, my book Piece by Piece: Love in the Land of Alzheimer’s is available at Ubud’s Ganesha Book Store, Threads of Life, or on Amazon.

Ship capsizes in waters off Indonesia’s Bali, leaving seven missing KM Multi Prima One cargo ship heading to Waingapu town of East Nusa Tenggara province capsized in Bali Gulf after leaving waters off Surabaya, the provincial capital of East Java province, said Yusuf Latief, head of communication for media of the national search and rescue office. Seven out of 14 crewmembers remain missing and now the search operation to recover them is getting underway, he said. The search operation is being carried out at the radius of 200 nautical miles from the site of the sea incident, said Latief. The seven other crewmembers who survived the incident were rescued by another ship which was passing by the spot. Sea water transport is a favorite transport means in Indonesia, a vast archipelagic country home to over 17,500 islands. A lack of safety standard has often triggered sea incidents. Keen to see a komodo dragon? $500 please, says Indonesian governor Tourists keen for a close-up look at komodo dragons in their natural habitat could be hit with an alarming bill, if one Indonesian politician gets his way. The governor of East Nusa Tenggara province - home to the world’s biggest lizard - has proposed charging visitors $500 to see the endangered species, about 50 times the current entrance fee for foreign tourists at Komodo National Park. And if Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat prevails, the park would be off limits to all but “extraordinary” visitors with cash to burn. “(Komodo dragons) are very unique, but sadly they come cheap,” the governor said this week, during a speech to university administrators. “Only people with deep pockets are allowed to (see the komodo dragons). Those who don’t have the money shouldn’t visit the park since it specifically caters to extraordinary people,” he added. The governor - who also suggested recreational boats should be charged a $50,000 entrance fee - said he would talk with the central government, which administers the national park. The provincial government and federal environment ministry did not respond to requests for comment on the proposed fee hike. Indonesian politicians have a long history of announcing plans that rarely come to pass, including the former drug czar’s proposal to build a prison surrounded by moats filled with piranhas and crocodiles to tighten security. Thousands of tourists annually descend on the cluster of islands in eastern Indonesia that are the only place in the world where komodo dragons can be seen in their natural habitat. Previously, the government planned to limit the number of tourists over concerns that the influx was putting pressure on the environment and endangering the giant lizard’s habitat. The slavering carnivores, which can grow to around three meters (10 feet) in length and weigh up to 70 kilograms (154 pounds), can be dangerous to humans although deadly attacks are rare. Baby dies after American mother allegedly throws her out of a moving car in Bali The mum suffering from post-partum depression who allegedly threw her baby from a moving car in Bali hasn’t been told the child has died. The 32-year-old American woman allegedly threw her two-month-old daughter from the car and then tried to take her own life by also throwing herself from the vehicle, Indonesian police said on Wednesday. South Denpasar police chief Nyoman Wiarajaya told a news conference that officers haven’t been able to question Nicole Stasio because she is hospitalised in a severe state of depression. Friends on Facebook said Stasio had been suffering from post-partum depression. A driver and guide who were with the 32-year-old told police she jumped out of the car without warning at an intersection in Denpasar and they were initially unaware of what had happened to the baby. Villagers found the infant with severe injuries about a kilometre from where Ms Stasio leapt out of the vehicle. The baby died about seven hours later at the same hospital, Bali Mandara, where Ms Stasio is being treated. As of Wednesday evening she had not been charged, and is reportedly is unaware of the child’s death. Mr Wiarajaya said the woman, who was born in California, travelled to Bali with her parents in July. The parents stayed in Bali for about 10 days and Ms Stasio gave birth on the island in September after her parents had left Indonesia. “She refused to answer when they (the parents) asked about her baby’s father,” Mr Wiarajaya said, quoting information from the driver and tour guide who accompanied the family since they arrived. “But she gave the impression that she was unmarried and her family preferred that she give birth to a child abroad, like wanting to avoid something,” he said. Ms Stasio had written on Facebook that she planned to return to California where she worked as a yoga instructor and health coach. The driver, Wayan Siaja, and the guide, Made Arimbawa, told police they had taken Ms Stasio and her daughter to Bali’s international airport on Tuesday evening but Ms Stasio changed her mind about returning to the US and told them to take her back to Ubud. They said she sat silently in the car before the tragic events unfolded, according to Mr Wiarajaya. Ms Stasio had started a GoFundMe page for financial help in raising her child. “I am creating a life of beauty, abundance, peace, and unconditional love for myself and my little baby maestro,” she wrote on the page. “I am full of joy and excitement to be a mother and guardian of this
Woman chases plane on tarmac at Bali airport after turning up late for flight A woman was so desperate to catch her flight at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport that she ran after the plane, which was already moving on the tarmac. The woman, whose identity is unknown, was bound for a flight to Jakarta on Indonesian low-cost carrier Citilink on Sunday morning (Nov 18), local media reports said. Shortly before Flight QG193 was scheduled to take off at 7.20am, the woman, who was late for the flight, broke away from security officers at the boarding gate before dashing onto the tarmac. A 20-second clip of the incident was posted on Facebook and Twitter on Sunday, and local reports said the video was shared by many in Indonesia. The clip shows the woman struggling as two airport officials hold her by her arms. She later ends up lying on the ground before she is restrained. A Citilink spokesman confirmed the incident with Indonesian broadcaster Liputan6 on Monday. The spokesman added that the plane had taken off after the runway was declared safe. The woman was placed on another flight to Jakarta, which departed at 4.40pm. [The Straits Times November 20, 2018]
Renae Lawrence hands herself in to police Just one day after Renae Lawrence returned to Australia after 13 years in an Indonesian prison, the Bali Nine drug trafficker has handed herself in to police over a number of outstanding warrants. A spokeswoman for NSW Police confirmed the 41-year-old attended the Waratah police station in suburban Newcastle on Friday afternoon “in relation to outstanding warrants issued in 2005.” Ms Lawrence was allegedly involved in a police chase using a stolen car on the Central Coast on March 26, 2005, a month before she was arrested in Indonesia. Police claim on that date, Ms Lawrence stole a car from Sydney’s inner west and drove north with fellow Bali Nine member Matthew Norman. The pursuit allegedly started in Enfield before the pair travelled through Turramurra, Mooney Mooney and Peats Ridge. The car was later stopped by police. By the time Gosford Local Court issued two warrants for her arrest in June that year, she was already in an Indonesian prison awaiting trial. The police spokeswoman said those warrants have now been processed. Ms Lawrence was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Newcastle local court on Thursday, December 6. Ms Lawrence walked free from Indonesia’s Bangli prison on Wednesday after her imprisonment for her role in the plan to smuggle more than eight kilograms of heroin from Indonesia to Australia. She arrived back on Australian soil on Thursday morning, landing in Brisbane before flying on to her hometown of Newcastle. On Thursday, NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said that, despite believing Ms Lawrence had “paid the price for her sins”, the outstanding matters would be resolved via “arrest by appointment” in the coming days. “I have to be honest with you, I know she’s sinned, and I think she’s paid a fairly heavy price for that,” he said. “Nevertheless we will still take those two matters to court in terms of the two matters that are still outstanding.” [Sydney Moring Herald November 23, 2018]

Bali plans to impose USD $10 levy on every foreign tourist arrival Bali Governor I Wayan Koster said this new levy should add around IDR 1 trillion (approx. USD $67 million) in additional local revenue as Bali is expected to be visited by some 7 million foreign tourists in full-year 2019. The additional income that will be generated through the new levy will go to the local budget for cultural development and environmental preservation. “Considering presently only a 10 percent tax applies to hotel accommodations and restaurant meals, the new levy would generate more local revenue,” Koster said. Various other countries have a similar levy, he added. The additional proceeds would be invested to improve a wide range of services that are offered to tourists, including infrastructure and transportation. However, it will also be used to boost the local economy and improve the quality of local human capital. For example, 1,493 traditional villages in Bali (desa adat) as well as various high-schools and health clinics (puskesmas) are expected to get free WiFi facilities in 2019 through the budget. The new levy plan is currently being studied. A decision is expected to follow within the next five weeks. If approved, then it will come into effect at the start of 2019. In the January-September 2018 period a total of 4.6 million foreign tourists entered Bali through Ngurah Rai International Airport, up 1.32 percent compared to foreign visitor arrivals in the same period one year earlier. Natural disasters, however, remain a threat and can result in the failure to meet foreign visitor arrival targets. In late June 2018 Ngurah Rai International Airport had to be closed temporarily due to volcanic ash stemming from Mount Agung’s eruption, located in eastern Bali. Mount Agung rumbled back to life in 2017 and has been erupting periodically ever since. The volcano erupted five times in late November 2017, causing thousands of people to evacuate, disrupting air travel and causing environmental damage. Meanwhile, recent earthquakes around Bali and Lombok as well as a devastating tsunami in Central Sulawesi (all caused by heightened tectonic activity in the region) could make foreigners somewhat hesitant to visit Bali (or other parts of Indonesia).
