7 WILL THE RULE OF 72 WIPE OUT YOUR SAVINGS? A quick answer to this question is possibly yes - unless you do something about it! In the case of some of the long-time British expatriates in Bali living on a frozen UK state pension the answer is that the rule of 72 has already wiped out most of their hard-earned pension and for them there is little they can do other than hope that a future UK government changes the rules. Could be a long wait. The Rule of 72 can also work very much in your favour - if you make the right decisions early enough. So what exactly is this ‘Rule of 72’? You are probably thinking this is one of those complicated new financial terms invented to confuse ordinary people and make financial experts look very clever. In fact the first recorded reference to it goes back to a paper written by mathematician Luca Pacioli in Venice in 1494. The rule of 72 is a method used in finance to quickly estimate the doubling or halving time of an investment through compound interest or inflation respectively. To forestall any e-mails from mathematicians pointing out that 69.3 would be a more accurate figure to use or even a figure higher than 72 if we were dealing with annual inflation rates in excess of 20% I would add that 72 is accurate enough for the range of inflation rates we are likely to see in the financial markets. 72 has been chosen as the most practical figure for mental calculations or when using a basic calculator. This is because 72 is divisible by 1,2,3,4,6,8,9 and 12.

No-one of course can accurately predict future growth or inflation rates but the formula at least gives a clear picture of potential outcomes and is a useful planning tool. The impact of low interest rates in recent years Inflation has not been a major issue in the years following the Global Financial Crisis as interest rates plummeted to support efforts to stimulate economies. This was good news for anyone on a fixed income or for those borrowing money from the banks. It was not good news though for retirees accustomed to living on income from deposits as that income has almost dried up. Low interest rates have also impacted returns on most forms of investments since 2008. Where financial investments such as portfolio bonds or savings plans are concerned a hidden impact has been that of charges which have not reduced in line with lower returns so it has not been a good period for investors. C/BT/I-15 Feb 17

But changes are on the way, good for some, bad for others. Led by the drive for growth and infrastructure investment and the fall in unemployment in the US we are likely to see a gradual return to more ‘normal’ rates of interest and a certain increase in inflation. This is not good news for retirees living on frozen pensions or annuities as they will see no growth in their income whilst they will see a sharp rise in the cost of living. It is bad news also for those who have borrowed large sums of money at very low interest rates as those rates are likely to rise and even a small percentage rise can have a big impact on one’s budget.

So how does it work?

On the other hand it is good news for investors as they are likely to see better returns from their financial investments and faster growth in their savings plans. Property values should also rise although this will vary from country to country and according to supply and demand.

Let’s say you have an investment that grows at 4% per annum with the interest rolled up. If you divide the magic 72 by 4 the answer is 18. Therefore you can say that your investment will double in 18 years. If you are fortunate to have an investment that grows at 12% per annum then 72 divided by 12 gives you 6. Therefore your investment would double in value in just 6 years. You can also see why cash is currently a poor option for the long term. If you are getting say 0.5% interest on your USD or GBP deposit account it will take you 72 divided by 0.5 = 144 years to double your money at current rates! The rule also shows the impact of inflation Now let’s say you have left your money in the bank (or under the mattress) and it is not earning interest at all. If inflation is running at say 3% the purchasing power of your money would be halved in 72 divided by 3 = 24 years. If rampant inflation returned to say 12% (as we have seen in the past) the purchasing power of your money would be halved in 72 divided by 12 = just 6 years. What has impacted long term British pensioners in Indonesia (and many other countries including Australia and most of Asia) is the wildly fluctuating rate of inflation over three decades and its impact over time on their pensions which were frozen from the day they left the UK. In some of the worst cases pensioners have lost up to 90% of the value of their pensions. Locally there is nothing they can do other than support an active group in Bali that through international affiliations continues to lobby and shame UK politicians. Taking growth of an investment and the impact of inflation together it is possible to come up with a more realistic estimate of how your savings can grow. So if, for example, your investment is growing at a net 5% per annum and inflation is running at 2% then the ‘real’ growth is 3% and you would consequently double the ‘real’ value or spending power of your savings in 72 divided by 3 = 24 years.

What actions can be taken? Reducing loans, particulary mortgages, should be a priority before interest rates rise and start to bite. Credit card debt with its outrageous interest charges, even during times of low bank rates, should be eliminated in the shortest time possible. The Rule of 72 demonstrates how quickly you can double your money if you have investments that grow. It also shows how quickly your money can evaporate if your savings are stagnant. The aim therefore should be to build up a capital sum that can continue to grow in real terms (above inflation) on retirement, even after taking regular withdrawals. The sum required to do this effectively can be quite staggering, but the earlier you make a start, the sooner you can get the Rule of 72 to work for you rather than against you.

Committed to Keeping it Green! Making good on their commitment to continue raising environmental awareness about keeping Bali clean and to enhance their recycling efforts, Finns now have their own reusable shopping bags! With some assistance from Dave at Keep Bali Clean, Finns asked them to help print and produce 500 Tas Pasar! (shopping bag in Bahasa!) so that they could do their part in the quest to rid the island of plastic bags. You might remember the powerful local initiative, Bye Bye Plastic Bags that was founded by two school students, Melati and Isabel Wisjen in 2013? Over the course of the last few years, the project has gained incredible momentum with an international following, an invitation to London TED Talks, a team of volunteers across the island and a confirmation from

the Governor of Bali to rid the island of plastic bags by 2018.

Keep Bali Clean is another well known project aimed at reducing the island’s prolific problem with littering and rubbish. By encouraging consumers and suppliers to adopt reusable TAS PASAR bags, they not only save money but also the environment! Dave from Keep Bali Clean runs a business called Easytees, a Balinese/Australian owned factory with over twenty years experience supplying clients with handcrafted T-shirts. Easytees take great pride in the knowledge that they set and maintain high standards with regard to operating a professional, legal, and socially and environmentally conscious business. Despite the name, ‘Easytees’ they also produce a wide range of items such as hoodies, polo shirts, shirts, walk shorts, board shorts, swimwear, caps, and of course, bags! colours, Finns asked for a green Tas Pasar with Finns Logo and Keep Bali Clean’s Logo on it. These reusable and environmentally friendly bags will be passed to suppliers for both Finns Beach Club and Finns Recreation Club so that they can deliver fruits, vegetables and other supplies in those reusable bags, rather than in plastic bags we see so frequently in Bali. Plans are already in motion to have more bags made and distribute them to Finns staff, to reduce the amount of plastic bags they use every day. It’s Finns hope that this practice will continue, become commonplace and extend to their families and friends through this effort as well, leading by example, and by asking the staff to pass the message on. Teppanyaki in Ubud Asiatique is an Asian restaurant, serving a variety of cuisines. The trendy fine dining restaurants of the world have been, in recent years, offering a seat [usually a very expensive one] at what they call the Chef’s Table. Sitting in the kitchen watching the master chef prepare your meal. The Japanese have been doing that for centuries, they call it Teppanyaki. A small number of select guests are seated at a cooking table, the centre of which is a large hot plate [teppan], standing behind is the chef. All the food is prepared in front of you and handed over in bowls, as it is cooked. All very serious and traditional except in some tourist locations where the cooking process is turned into a circus. Whilst Asiatique offers a choice of Asian cuisines it is the Teppanyaki table that commands centre stage, You can order from the menu selecting whatever items you want to be cooked [meat, seafood, vegetables] or choose one of the Sets; Tani [beef and prawns], Denen [prawns, fish and chicken] or the special Angus Beef & Lobster Set. As well there is a special extra set each night of the week….I had the Wednesday special, the Kawa Set. It was an amazing array of seafood. All sets begin with an appetizer [cucumber sushi], and include a bowl of miso soup which is made using a miso paste [fermented soy bean] and dashi stock [dried fish] with chopped spring onions and small blocks of tofu. Miso accompanies many Japanese meals. There is also a bowl of Japanese pickled vegetable strips and one of steamed rice. The first performance on the teppan is to produce a plate of assorted vegetables, each vegetable having its own slightly different cooking method, the flaming that accompanies the finish is more for show but still very effective. The dish includes bean sprouts, capsicum, onion, mushrooms, asparagus and shaved strips of pumpkin. Even the sauce [unsalted butter and soy] is prepared on the teppan and scooped over the food. Then the main course of your choice [meats and/or

seafood] is prepared with the same very Japanese attention to detail. Teppanyaki is not all that is served at Asiatique, there is a full a la carte menu. You can start with an appetizer from Thailand [Tom Yum Goong, the classic hot and sour prawn soup or BBQ Sea Scallops and Pomelo Salad with tamarind dressing and kaffir lime], Vietnam [Banana Blossom Salad], India [Spiced Prawns with a crunchy crumbed dhal fritter, cucumber salad and minted yoghurt podina], Japan [Sushi or Sashimi] or Indonesia [Soup Buntut, which is ox tail or the traditional ever popular Soto Ayam, turmeric scented chicken with glass noodles]. An Asian Tasting Plate is a mix of items, some of which are from the menu and others that are not. It includes a taste of that Banana Blossom Salad as well as Vietnam’s Rice Paper Roll, Thai Gai Hor Bai Toey [marinated steamed chicken wrapped and steamed in pandan leaf] and a chilli-glazed Curry Puff plus Sate, Bali-style, with shrimp and lemongrass. Banana Flower Salad may sound strange to all who have never before tried this dish that is so popular in Thailand and Vietnam. Yes, you actually eat the flower but then many flowers and leaves are edible. Whilst the Thai version uses lemon, coconut, coriander and chilli this classic Vietnamese one uses basil, lime and of course fresh mint. Very refreshing!

The Mains, other than the Teppanyaki, are also from a variety of Asian cuisines. Head of the list is definitely Crisp Skin 5 Spice Peking Duck, closely followed by the Indian Mughlai Lamb Shank Korma. The King Prawns are cooked in an Indonesian curry of coconut milk, turmeric and lime leaves. The Seafood Tempura [squid, prawns and fish] reverts to the Japanese theme, whilst a fillet of Sea Bass is crusted with tempeh, no doubt a creation of the chef. Whilst the Angus Beef Fillet is as international as you can get, it is served with an unusual sweet potato roesti [Swiss] and rendang sauce [Sumatra]. Vegetarians are well catered for. Whether it is just a selection of vegetables to be cooked on the teppan or complete dishes from the menu such as the Wafu Salad [seaweed and lettuce with sesame dressing] Vegetable Tempura or a Martabak of leek, onion and mushroom in a curry sauce. Asiatique is something very different in Ubud, an area of Bali that now offers as much variety as the trendy south, just that it is a bit more laid-back and relaxed. Asiatique deserves a visit by night for its Asian delights, and another by day as the same area also hosts Ubud’s best breakfast buffet. As many local expats have already discovered.

Update

Cocoon, Jln. Double Six at Blue Ocean Beach, Legian now has a Steak Night, every Thursday. A selection of imported steaks at quite amazing prices. Porterhouse, Tenderloin and Scotch Fillet are the special cuts available. All prices at Cocoon are now shown as net of taxes and service charge, the way most tourists want it. 250gm Tenderloin is only Rp.175,000 Net, whilst a whopping 400 gm of Porterhouse is priced at Rp.190,000 Net. The steaks are all served with salad, chips and onion rings. A glass of Plaga Cabernet Sauvignon to go with the steak is only Rp.50,000 Net [Rp. 250,000 for a bottle] I recently tried their Eye Fillet [pictured], which is available, every day, on the normal a la carte menu, I can not recall ever enjoying a better steak. The monster steak knife [almost a Kris] just sliced through the meat as if it was butter, yet being so tender did not retract from the taste. With all mains at Cocoon now priced at under Rp. 200,000 Net, I doubt if there is a better ‘value for money’ restaurant in Bali. Republik 1945 on Jln. Raya Kerobokan, closed down last month. That hardly caused a ripple. However the news that the impressive site has now been taken over by the Sarong Group has the foodies of Bali salivating at the thought of another Will Meyrick masterpiece. Back to the future? Will’s first two Bali stints were at Husk [at the old Sofitel] and Blossom [at what was once called Sentosa]. At both places the cuisine was Thai, just Thai. A wonderful mix of traditional and Royal cuisine. At Sarong, MamaSan [and the mind-blowing upstairs Tasting Club], Tiger Palm and Hujan Locale a base of Thai has been complemented with exotic dishes from everywhere else in SE Asia, as a result of his constant travels to discover new and old recipes. But at the new enterprise it will once again be THAI! We all wait in anticipation.

Kou seems to be the stand out restaurant at the impressive newly opened shopping mall, Renon Plaza [next door to the US Consul]. Chinese Dim Sum is the main attraction although a full Chinese menu is also available. Whilst their main room is air-conditioned and accessed from inside the Mall, there is also an open outside terrace area for the smokers. The ‘soft opening’ specials, especially the large mixed platters, were very reasonable priced. The dim sum menu is very extensive, steamed/fried dumplings with many different fillings, steam buns and much more. Ji is predominantly Japanese. It is found at the front entrance of the Tugu Hotel, at Canggu. It is a relatively new restaurant but inside it could be many decades old. It is a typical Tugu fit out, one that uses the room that once housed many Chinese-Balinese Buddhist antiques, with a street front entrance added. Sashimi, Sushi and Maki Rolls with many different seafood combinations are the main event. All the normal Japanese mains are available Tempura, etc., with many added international dishes, many of which could be described as healthy! Such as the Yellowtail, dragon fruit and shisho mushrooms, or the Cured Salmon with pineapple and coriander. Interesting salads include Tiger Prawns and noodles, Duck Breast and shimoji mushrooms or Roasted Pumpkin with Roquefort. I like the Sticky Ginger Chicken with chilli and honey to give it that hot and sweet taste.

SHOWTIME

Stiff Chilli on the beach at Semawang, south of Sanur is one of Sanur’s busiest spots for local expats. The Australian management team is always trying a few new things for their regulars. A couple of new Pizzas have a local flavour. The Rendang Pizza has traditional Indonesian spices combined with Australian imported rump steak, topped with cheese, coconut cream and Lombok chilli on a thin crispy pizza base. Whilst the Satay Chicken Pizza uses chicken thigh meat [so much tastier than breast] marinated in Indonesian spices then cooked in peanut satay sauce, layered on a thin, crisp base, finished with a sprinkle of peanuts and a drizzle of coconut cream. A few new Tapas include Coconut Prawns medium king prawns marinated in coconut cream then coated in shredded coconut and panko crumbs. Accompanied with a mango, pineapple and chilli salsa. Last but not least are the Chilli Chicken Strips, coated in egg wash, covered in panko crumbs and drizzled in chilli. Tastes great!

Grow at the front of the L hotel, on Jln. Raya Petitenget, now does Roasts on Sundays. The starter is a Potato and Leek Soup followed by your choice of Roast Beef, Lamb or oven-baked Barramundi, all of which are accompanied by assorted sides; garlic cream spinach, rosemary roast potatoes, cardamom glazed carrots and petit pois a la francaise. These 2 courses cost Rp. 296,000 ++ p.p. or if you want to add free flow house wine there is a special package for that. Dessert can also be added and that is Ryan Clift’s special Basil and Lemon Tart. For the children it is just Rp.120,000 ++. Happy Chappy comes to Ubud. Not yet, later in 2017. The deal has been done, and the fit out is soon to commence. It will just be a small space in Central Ubud, so maybe only dim sum and noodles? The culinary choices in Ubud are becoming so varied that the locals never have a reason to fight the traffic and stray further.

Smokehouse is the new restaurant at the former Canggu Club, now re-branded as Finns Recreation Club. It actually has the full name of Bistro C Smokehouse, as it operates more as a bistro day time [Bistro C] and as a full restaurant night time [Smokehouse]. I first tasted the product of Exec Chef Canadian Benoît Larochelle [ex many Michelin starred restaurants in Paris; Cordeillan Bages, Jean Luc Rocha - Jaques Chibois a Grace - Jacques Le Divellec and Regis Marcon] at the original Finns Beach Club when it was located at Ungasan. He attempted to turn out tasty finger food, with style and he certainly succeeded. Fortunately he has stayed with the organization in its move to Canggu and is now supervising the Bistro C Smokehouse offerings. I look forward to checking out his latest offerings, I am sure that they are very special.

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

How many Different Types of Gamelan Orchestras are there in Bali? In short, many! Gamelan experts the world over normally claim that there are anything between 25 and 40 types; however, so far I’ve counted 70 with the number increasing all the time as people create more different varieties. My count includes seven extinct ensembles (yes, there are actually entire Balinese ensemble types which have now succumbed the fate of the dodo). It’s hard to say which exactly those ensembles no longer exist – fortunately there are photos from the early 1920s of several of them; the others are just names I’ve found in books by Balinese government researchers. The sheer number of orchestral types in Bali is a reflection of the musical creativity of the Balinese. There are orchestras made from different materials: bamboo, wood, bronze and iron, as well as individual instruments with parts made from brass, skin, horn and shell. Unlike Java, there are no orchestras made entirely from brass. By far the most popular material is bronze, which Balinese call kerawang. Out of the bronze-keyed gamelan ensemble types, the orchestra called gong kebyar which was developed in Singaraja in 1912 is by far the most common and popular with possibly more than 30,000 sets across Bali. The most sacred gamelan orchestra in Bali, called selonding, has iron keys however. This type was until recently a lot less popular due to the taboos surrounding playing and learning it.

Generally, the older gamelan types are made of basic, easily accessible and crafted local materials, such as bamboo (of a number of varieties) and wood (palm, sugar palm and coconut). At a later period came bronze and iron technology, not necessarily in that order. In the 20th century, there has been somewhat of an explosion of ensemble types, experimenting with additional tones (more than the maximum of seven tones in the older ensembles), as well as adding more keys. Fusion with western instruments is commonplace, something which was less common (but not unheard of) in the past. Before the late 20th century, scales were adopted from Java or indigenously Balinese, but with the influence of the western standardization of A440, there has also been a tendency towards standardization (of more commonly heard Balinese scales), modes, as well as copy the western standard altogether (more frightening for a gamelan researcher such as myself). There are even now innovations which make instruments look like a grand piano (but with bamboo keys) as well as instruments made from trash or recycled materials.

Say What? Question: My boyfriend and I have known each other for about 8 months. When we first met and decided to travel together, he was exactly what I was looking for. But, as time has gone on, and as we have been in a variety of different situations together, I have come to see him as clingy, whiny, and not entirely reliable. He used to do his best to work on issues I’d bring up, but now, after telling him a problem I have, he says his piece on the matter and considers the issue resolved. At this point, I don’t want to be with him any more. I’ve grown a lot since we’ve been together, and I haven’t seen any growth in him. I was his first serious girlfriend and his first sexual partner. He says the only good thing going for him in his life right now is “us.” It was great while it lasted, but I feel as if I need a partner on equal emotional footing - not the co-dependent victim he’s become. I’m not upset about breaking up with him, but I’m absolutely torn up that it’s going to hurt him. I asked a friend for advice, and she said, “It’s going to suck. Just do it.” You may tell me the same thing, but I figure it never hurts to ask. Thanks for your time. Dr. ZZ: Your friend is right. It’s a sucky situation, and you need to sit down with your boyfriend and talk to him. Tell him you care about him a lot, but the relationship is not working for you, and you need to end it. Say you know this is not good news, but you also know it’s what you must do. He’ll probably say a lot of things, some of which may be mean or pitiful, and all your instincts to jump in and make it better will be on full alert. Resist them. Guilt and pity are not a reason to stay involved with someone. It’s not your fault that his life is hard right now, and you don’t have the power to somehow save him from all his difficulties. So prepare for the awkward flailing and know that you’ve just got to listen and ride it out.

How can I convey the message politely and without offense that while she’s lovely to think of volunteering, and while I don’t doubt she would do all she’s physically capable of to help out, I’d rather someone else - unless there’s no one else, in which case she’s it? Keep it short, and don’t get bogged down in explanations or in trying to sell him on this being the right decision for him, or for both of you. You actually help the two of you by making it completely about your own needs. Your need to be broken up overrides all others and can’t be argued. It lets you acknowledge his sadness and grief without being patronizing. Question: I work for a non-profit organization here on Bali, and in a couple of weeks, I have to take a box of our literature, a banner, some free pens and sign-up sheets to an event that’s being held on the other side of the island. Although our usual procedure is to have at least two staff members man the booth at an event like this, this time I’m the only one able to go. So I put an ad in the paper asking for volunteers to accompany me. So far, the only person to volunteer is a lovely retired woman I happen to know. She’s very enthusiastic and also slightly disabled. She can’t stand for long periods of time, can’t help carry things, and isn’t really that good at conversing with people, or indeed getting people to sign up for things - especially at an event like this where people passing by may never have heard of us before. In short, she’s not the ideal person for the job, but I don’t want to hurt her feelings, and I don’t want to turn her away from volunteering for us.

Dr. ZZ: When hiring or interviewing volunteers, you don’t have to use everyone who applies, nor do you have to accept all who apply as being appropriate, necessary or helpful. Sometimes, however, you can “repurpose” a prospective candidate. In this case, although you need someone more social and more agile to co-man the booth at the upcoming event, perhaps you can figure out another way in which this person can assist. Is she willing to drive, for example, to make you lunch, to shop for necessities, or to show up and look lovely behind the scenes? If so, she will gain in experience from your engagement, and you will hold on to her and start to potentially groom her for a more appropriate job next time. The idea is to commit to her in a “this is how I would like to be treated” approach. Write up a schedule, a list of tasks, and your main goals for the event; then meet with her, and go over the list. Be up front about the amount of lifting, hauling, standing, and socializing with the public is involved, and do it in a chatty, curious fashion rather than from a position of telling her what she can and can’t do. Aim for an ambiance of two professionals who have a job to do rather than one of discussing her disability and ways in which to accommodate it. Treat her like a partner, divide the work accordingly, ask her what she needs, and what her limits are. Then, go and make the best of it.

AYUSHA WELLBEING CENTRE Located in an enchanted forest, Svarga Loka Resort in Ubud has created a major change by adding professional healing treatments to their services. Aside from their charming spa over-looking the river they now have a second place, (Ayusha Wellbeing Centre), for treatments which include spring water colonics. A new addition is a varied list of healers to complement their services. At Ayusha Wellbeing they believe in healing the whole person, a holistic approach to wellness. This means they take the time to find out your individual healing needs with a detailed consultation prior to your treatment. This enables their practitioners to address your specific issues during the treatment session.

The Products They have carefully selected each of their treatment products so that only the purest ingredients come into contact with your skin. Experienced herbalists working with indigenous Balinese herbs and therapeutic oils have prepared many products exclusively for them. They can guarantee that there are no SLS’s, parabens, synthetic colors or fragrances used in any of their products. Supporting supplements are on offer at the Wellbeing Centre, for a gentle and efficacious way to improve the system pre & post treatments. I visited the beautiful resort recently and was met at reception by Richard Currall, actually a renowned British healer. He then guided me to a treatment room as we chatted while walking through the serene premises. Richard has a vast array of techniques he uses to create a customized treatment for each individual’s requirements. Sitting comfortably with a notepad and pen in hand he asked me questions regarding my issues I wished to heal. He also told me a little of his experience. He began working with horses of clients like Queen Elizabeth II and the British Polo team. Gradually he expanded his techniques to include humans. He has an impressive list of former clients and works internationally at other health retreats like Chiva Som & Kamalayain Thailand and Ananda, in the Himalayas. He’s able to send healing energy long-distance too. He also told me that everyone that he’s worked on has become successful in their career and made a lot of money. That sounded promising. Richard then asked me to lie down on the massage table face up and relax by taking some deep breaths. He then led me through a short guided meditation to put me into a relaxed state. Then he lightly placed his hands on an area of my body which required healing. He asked me to visualize my problem getting smaller and disappearing. Gosh his hands were really hot. He kept them there for several minutes then moved them to my stomach for some time. He quietly moved around my body and finally sat behind my head placing his hands on my scalp to treat eczema. When Richard finished he brought me back to awareness and asked me to lie for a few minutes longer asking how I felt… very relaxed. When I sat up I was surprised that we had been in the room for two hours. I felt really good. He told me that he would send me healing long-distance to continue his work after suggesting that I return for two more sessions later.

The Wellness Team Nigel McFarland heads the Ayusha Wellbeing team as the Functional Wellbeing Director. His vast training includes colon hydrotherapy, Ayurvedic Panchakarma, Indian herbalism and nutritional alchemy. This charming Irishman organizes and heads individualized detox and rejuvenation programs and retreats. I had a colon hydrotherapy experience with Nigel, who is known as the “colon whisperer” of Ubud. He takes a

totally different approach to any colonic irrigation I had done before. First, we sat in comfortable chairs in the spacious treatment room and discussed his holistic attitude on the subject. He asked questions concerning my health and emotional state of being and any problems or stress I was suffering from. He asked if I had any problems with constipation and I admitted that I had. Nigel explained that constipation relates to “holding on to relationships, not letting go”. He believes that any problems in the colon are related to the emotions. This process lasted about 30 to 40 minutes. He likes to look at a person as a whole in a holistic way. After our discussion I changed into a hospital-like gown and lay on the bed. Nigel explained how the equipment worked, which uses filtered spring water. Then he began to investigate the condition of my intestines with gentle probing fingers, asking if any areas were painful or tender. After this he asked me to lie on my side and inserted the sterile nozzle inside me. Making sure I was comfortable I returned to a face up position. Nigel then turned on the water monitoring my comfort. He explained that the water was actually exercising my colon to get it back into good condition. He recommends that clients have a colonic cleansing periodically during the year depending on your condition. His caring holistic approach to colonics is very reassuring and I felt he really knows what he’s talking about and doing.

AFL NEWS The 2017 Aquarius Bali Masters AFL 9’s The 2017 Aquarius Bali Masters AFL 9’s was held last month at Finns Recreation Club in Canggu, Bali. Teams competed in two age divisions, the over 47s and the over 35s. There were 33 teams in total, making this the greatest number of teams to ever compete in an Australian football event in Asia. The action was fast and furious, despite the advanced age of the participants. This 9’s version of football has been developed by the Bali Geckos to accommodate the smaller soccer-sized fields. This results in much faster action and scoring on these grounds but tests the stamina. 35 metre arcs are painted on the field where a team must kick within to have a score registered. With so many teams in attendance, the starts were early and the days were long, but crowds were strong throughout. The 7am daily bounce-down presented its own set of challenges for traveling teams used to sampling the famous Bali night life. Quite a few bleary eyed footballers and support crew were spotted each morning. Players were often sweating Bintang! Teams were ranked from their qualifying games into top 4, next 4, third 4 and bottom 4, playing for the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield respectively. In the 47+ division the Cup was taken out by the Darwin Waratah Warriors in their first year in this age group. The Waratah Warriors have been regular champions in the 35+ division in the past, but with their squad ageing, they brought their guile and experience to the older division and were the stand-outs of the competition. A gallant runner-up was host club, the Bali Geckos. A notable player was Sydney Swans Team of the Century wingman David Murphy. The winners: • • • • •

By The Coach

This Sporting Life For the first time, the host team Bali Geckos held a Sportsman Lunch on the eve of the Masters, which was a sellout. It was a great afternoon of football tales, hosted by Bali Geckos coach Ricky Olarenshaw and headlined by Wayne Carey, Nathan Bock, Dean Wallis, Stevie Baker and Paul Hawke. The Duck even made a 1 minute cameo appearance for the Geckos on the Saturday, delighting the crowd. Money raised from the luncheon is assisting the Indonesian indigenous team, The Garudas, travel to Melbourne in August to participate in the AFL International Challenge. A big thank you to the umpires from NTAFL for adjudicating for the duration, the sponsors of the event, Aquarius, Spear Wear, and Finns, and all the volunteers. 2018 Bali Masters is shaping up to be massive!

Greg Hinchliffe – President Bali Geckos Editor’s note – at the Sportsman Lunch, Geckos current President Greg Hinchliffe was surprised by his team-mates and awarded the inaugural Geckos Life Membership for his services to the club. The much loved personality, “Hinchy” founded the Geckos 20 years ago, has been a tremendous influence on AFL football throughout the entire Asian region, and does an amazing job of putting together and running the Bali Masters. He doesn’t look like slowing down on the field either, representing both the Geckos 35s and 47s side with poise and courage.

UPCOMING SPORTING EVENTS IN BALI 2017

The 35’s division held their finals on the Sunday and the level of competition was extremely high. A number of ex AFL, VFL, WAFL and SANFL players played across the teams adding to the standard. The Grand Final was a star-studded contest. Notable names included former #1 draft pick, Des Headland, along with team mates Kevin Caton and Adrian McAdam for the Noonamah Crocs. Ricky Olarenshaw, Steven Baker, Troy Luff and Sam Cranage lined up for the Bali Geckos. • • • • •

space for aspiring authors, artists and performers to learn with successful professionals and cultural icons.

In order to sustain our community-building philosophy, we’re inviting you to help us deliver this important program. Your contribution will assist with the translation and publication of the annual Anthology, as well as airfares, accommodation and honorarium for an emerging writer over the course of the Festival. More importantly, it will create a life-changing opportunity for these young people to share, connect and be inspired at what has been named among the world’s top literary events. By supporting the Emerging Writers Patron Program, Indonesia’s brave, new voices, from all corners of the archipelago will continue to be heard; voices of young women, the marginalized and the poor. And right now in Indonesia, this is more important than ever before.

INDONESIAN EMERGING VOICES AT THE FOREFRONT OF SOUTHEAST ASIA’S MOST CELEBRATED ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL EVENT THIS 26-29 OCTOBER

A not-for-profit organization with the mission of improving the lives o f y o u n g Indonesians through literature and the arts, the Ya y a s a n M u d r a Swari Saraswati is pleased to announce the Emerging Voices program, a free, four-day event celebrating young writers, filmmakers and artists from across the archipelago. Reborn from the Bali Emerging Writers Festival after a two-year hiatus, the Emerging Voices program will foster professional pathways for Indonesian students and young adults interested in literature and the arts. It will be conducted alongside the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival from 26-29 October. Held at the Joglo at Taman Baca, the heart of the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, and conducted in Bahasa Indonesia, the Emerging Voices program will comprise a series of panels, discussions, workshops and performances spanning four key areas of the arts: writing, design, music and film. The lineup and schedule, which will be announced alongside the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival’s main program in mid-August, will connect industry professionals and established artists, writers and performers with aspirational young creatives to develop their skills and confidence to pursue a career in the industry. “Supporting young Indonesians to pursue a career in literature and the arts, and to take pride in Indonesian arts and culture, has been at the heart of the Yayasan Mudra Swari Sarawati for over 14 years,” said Founder & Director, Janet DeNeefe. “We’re thrilled to be bringing this program back under the banner of the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, and to be creating a

“Professional development opportunities for young creatives are still relatively scarce in Indonesia. Through Emerging Voices, we hope to instil confidence in participants and their families that, despite the challenges, a career in the arts is not only viable, but respectable. It’s something to be nourished and celebrated.” Want to help an aspiring Indonesian writer tell their story to the world? Alongside Emerging Voices, UWRF will continue to run our annual Indonesian Emerging Writers Program. Each year, we put the call out across the archipelago to emerging writers: send us your stories. After receiving hundreds of submissions, an independent curatorial board selects 15 aspiring novelists, poets and playwrights from across Indonesia’s bustling cities and remote islands. We have heard many stories of the efforts of young writers to send us their manuscripts, including crossing a crocodile-infested river to reach the local post office – a process that took an entire day. Once selected, the Emerging Writers are then supported by the Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati to fly to Bali – for many, it’s the first time they have left their village or home town – and launch the annual Anthology in front of Indonesian and international audiences at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. A bilingual publication, the Anthology also represents a huge opportunity for emerging writers to have their work translated into English, opening the door to international opportunities for the first time. In an ongoing partnership with the Emerging Writers’ Festival, one of these writers is further selected to present at this dynamic showcase of Australia’s rising stars, and flown to Melbourne to take part in the program. Receiving over 900 submissions in 2017, the Emerging Writers Anthology Series has grown to become one of Indonesia’s most wide-reaching literary achievements, representing work from Aceh, Medan, Makassar, Palembang, Padang, Lampung, West Timor, Papua, Bali and Java.

Our vision is to create meaningful and lasting connections that cross cultures and dissolve boundaries, paving the way for future collaborations and exciting opportunities through the universal language of literature. Please refer to our website, www.ubudwritersfestival.com, for more details about how to get involved, how your donation will be used to support aspiring Indonesian writers, and how your contributions will be recognized. Ubud Writers & Readers Festival runs from 25-29 October. Early Bird Tickets go on sale and the first lineup is announced in mid-July, with the full program announced in mid-August. www.ubudwritersfestival.com.

Survival Indonesian and My First Book of Indonesian Words These two Indonesian language books, though meant for readerships at opposite ends of the spectrum of life experience, are both beginning language learning aids. One is aimed at a child and the other at the seasoned traveler. The first helps a very young person to start learning the language and culture while the other helps the traveler do the same, but in the context of getting the most out of his or her travels in the country.

The book is primarily aimed at Western kids in pre school, kindergarten or early primary school as an introduction to the language. In an email interview, the author explained that the book is popular with Indonesian parents living in Australia, USA or elsewhere. Parents buy it at airports for their grandchildren to encourage them to keep up the connection with the language. A grandparent can easily sit down and read the picture book to a young child, whether Indonesian or not.

Survival Indonesian

Cultural and linguistic notes are added for parents to enhance the Indonesian learning experience. The words that have also been chosen have a cultural connection that would be of interest to a young child. They learn a word, a bit about that word and a cultural element. Language and culture go hand in hand.

This practical phrasebook puts all the most important Indonesian words and phrases in the palm of your hand (dimensions only 10 cm X 15 cm). It contains all the necessary words and phrases for speaking Indonesian in almost any kind of setting, including the social media sphere (email, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) and shopping at the mall. Meant for travelers, tourists, students and business people learning Indonesian and learning about culture and local activities, it gives a deeper understanding of Indonesian than a typical Indonesian phrasebook or an Indonesian dictionary.

C/E/G-5 July 17

The cheerful illustrations depict a friendly and culturally rich nation, where the people are happy to get to know you and to share a bit of who they are and how they live. Kids enjoy this as it makes the language come to life. Words for things kids already know in English are joined by words specific to Indonesia, giving kids a glimpse into Indonesian life. Everyday expressions - like Apa kabar? (“How are you?”) give kids a chance to communicate in a meaningful way and show them that when it comes to courtesy and friendliness, other cultures have a lot in common with their own.

The new phrase book is organized by situations where one might need to speak Indonesian: staying in a hotel, getting around in a taxi, eating out, using numbers, sightseeing, seasons and weather, etc. Key features include: • Explore Indonesia armed with hundreds of useful Indonesian words and expressions. • A pronunciation guide for Indonesian letters and words. • A basic guide to Indonesian grammar. • Meet and greet: The right greeting for almost any situation. • Who, what, where, why, when: Requesting things and asking questions. • The ties that bind: Talking about your family. • What time/day is it? Telling time and days of the week. • How to read menus and important road signs. • A section on specific titles and place names. • A 25-page English to Indonesian dictionary for quick reference. • Dual-language Manga illustrations provide fun visual cues. As a bonus, a mini 26-page “Exploring Indonesia” section gives basic information about Indonesian holidays, customs and popular travel destinations. Author Katherine Davidsen completed her BA in Indonesian at Monash University and her Masters in Applied Linguistics at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. She has lived and worked in Jakarta, Indonesia, for over 15 years. Davidsen is also the author of the Tuttle Concise Indonesian Dictionary and Tuttle Mini Indonesian Dictionary. Survival Indonesian: How to Communicate Without Fuss or Fear Instantly, Tuttle Publishing 2016, ISBN 978-080-4845236, paperback, 192 pages. My First Book of Indonesian Words My First Book of Indonesian Words introduces the Indonesian language and culture to young children in an enjoyable and playful way. The familiar ABC rhyming structure combines with sparkling illustrations to encourage the natural ability of children to pick up a new language and vocabulary quickly.

Swadaya - Stories to Inspire the Nation Indonesia is so rich in natural and human resources that no one should be poor in this country. But with wealth and power concentrated in the hands of a few, millions of people across this vast archipelago struggle to feed and educate their families and live with dignity. Increasingly, communities are finding solutions for their issues without government support. Two Bali-based communications professionals are seeking out these stories and using them to inspire other communities country-wide. “Empowerment issues can be the drivers of extremism,” says Indonesian photographer and journalist Rio Helmi. We need to learn to respect all people and improve distribution of services. When people’s needs are ignored, it creates fertile ground for deep discontent.” Rio and award-winning American documentary producer/ director Joe Yaggi have come up with a concept which they hope will inspire and empower ordinary people around the country. They’re creating a cultural adventure TV series called Swadaya (Self Empowerment), 13 x thirty minute shows that will give Indonesians a look at how communities can work together and take charge of their own issues, empowering themselves with beneficial projects and programs. The series will be driven by ordinary people’s stories and achievements, and connect people across the archipelago.

understand new concepts but need inspiration. Grassroots projects are so effective because the people have a sense of ownership.” Swadaya will premiere on no fewer than 50 of Indonesia’s best loved local television stations. Joe’s organization, BumiHijau Media has built a broad audience for Swadaya by distributing over 30,000 factual TV programs and PSAs to local television partners over the past 5 years. BumiHijau also represents local TV stations for ad buying, placement and strategy, offering huge potential for advertisers to reach tens of millions of new viewers countrywide, especially in remote areas. Television is a tremendous opportunity to educate, inform and change behaviors, but around the world it’s more often about money, and less about social benefit. While television and media here in Indonesia is evolving in a number of positive directions, many - maybe most - of Indonesia’s young people are still unaware of their country’s rich heritage of human cultures, nature, natural resources and opportunities for change at the community level.

“Swadaya will reveal inspiring stories of community initiatives and share them with every corner of Indonesian society. Rio, one of the country’s most passionate cultural photographers, will travel to the ends of the archipelago on his motorcycle with his film crew seeking out fascinating projects and people,” says Joe, who has been making documentaries on similar subjects in Indonesia as Rio since 1993. “We want to reach people of all social levels,” Rio told me. “ Local initiatives have high success rates because ordinary people are invested. Communities working together are less susceptible to disillusionment. Prosperity increases. People are busy achieving things and making money, and feel fulfilled. “Make no mistake, village people are not ignorant. They

He began to breed Etawa goats for their superior size and, noticing that they were copious milk producers, decided to start a goat milk business. Setting up an association, he taught his fellow villagers how to raise the goats and milk them hygienically. Markets for the milk were soon found in East Java and Bali. Pak Hariomo now manages a What’sApp group that keeps up with prices, supply and demand and techniques.

This huge and growing demographic will be running the country in a decade or so, and it’s still primarily being fed a media diet of celebrities and dangdut instead of factual, informative and topical programming. There are woefully few positive role models for the next generation. Communities working together are less susceptible to disillusionment. Prosperity increases. People are busy achieving things and making money, and feel fulfilled.

Rio and Joe have both traveled extensively around Indonesia, especially in the eastern islands which have missed out on the prosperity of Java and Bali. “Government and foreign spending can be so wasteful in eastern Indonesia,” observes Rio, who has been covering stories on conservation, social issues and wildlife in Indonesia since 1980. “All that money is concentrated in a few places, it’s not always trickling down. When projects do happen, they are often presented to the people without consultation, so they feel no real ownership.”

Here’s a story. Born and raised in a very poor village in Banyuwangi District, East Java, Pak Hariono managed to attain a degree in Education. Instead of pursuing a career in the city, he returned to his village 12 years ago and worked as a farmer for a year while he assessed the potential for creating sustainable livelihoods for the community.

Even with access to the internet, Indonesians need inspiration and direction about how to find information and deal with local issues. One of the primary goals of BumiHijau Media is to bring thought-provoking, socially relevant programming like Swadaya to the emerging markets across the country. Swadaya will feature individuals and community groups as grassroots-level role models from Aceh to Papua, showing how Indonesians have taken their lives into their own hands to create more sustainable and prosperous futures. For Swadaya, Rio and Joe have identified some inspiring stories in communities which have created solutions for the challenges they face. One of my favourites is about a group of guys on motorcycles in Flores. A family crisis in a remote village motivated the leader of a motorcycle gang to organise transport for midwives to reach labouring women. These guys also teach appropriate technology high in the rugged mountains in areas inaccessible by car. On a remote coast in West Papua, the people rally around a Whale Shark whisperer and build fish and crustacean farms to support their village. A group of fishermen in Banyuwangi began planting a salt-hardy species of pine to stop erosion on their beaches. One unexpected result is that part of the beach has become an immensely popular destination for locals. In the Riau province of Sumatra, a group of farmers surrounded by large scale palm oil plantations have come together to train in sustainable palm oil production, benefiting their families and preserving their lands.

He also helped local coffee farmers learn to cultivate their trees more productively and helped organise a honey bee association. Importantly, he guides local youth in planning for the future. The village is prospering and visitors come from all over to study the initiatives. “Pak Hariono could have done anything,” Rio points out. “He has a degree in Education, he could have taught at a University. But he chose to go back to his village and help raise the local economy with thoughtful, appropriate industries and education. He’s a role model for ordinary Indonesians and a great story for Swadaya.” As citizens, residents or visitors to Indonesia, we have an opportunity to contribute to positive change in this country. To become involved and support Swadaya, follow this link to their Indiegogo campaign which starts July 5. https://igg.me/at/swadaya-tvseries

The Green Alternative: Sea Vegetables of Bali By Bill Dalton The Balinese have collected the ocean’s greenery for hundreds of years. Called rumput laut, the ferny blades of seaweed or “sea grass” wave like transparent aquatic foliage and have the appearance of feathery mermaids’ tresses or meticulous Art Nouveau patterns. Ocean gardens that at low tide look like gigantic underwater botanical gardens. The word seaweed is actually a misnomer. A weed is a plant that spreads so profusely it can harm the habitat where it takes hold, whereas everything about these delicate marine plants and algae – their cultivation, harvesting and consumption - is refreshingly green, clean and healthful. The government does all it can to promote this exportable, profitable, labor-intensive, nonpolluting and nonseasonal industry. The sea grass producing regencies of Bali are Klungkung, Badung and Buleleng. The most successful cultivation sites are the narrow straits between the three southern Penida Islands across the Badung Strait, i.e. the islets of Nusa Lembongan, the adjacent island of Nusa Ceningan and on the north coast of Nusa Penida in Klungkung district. Huge coastal areas of these offshore islands are covered in farmed seaweed. Ocean gardening is effective in alleviating overfishing and offers diversification of employment to include women and children in planting and harvesting rather than drawing people away from the fishing industry. Since seaweed gardens must be protected from petrol-based pollutants, motorized boats are restricted. Thus these waters are a major attraction for snorkelers and divers for their astoundingly rich diversity of 247 species of coral and 562 species of reef fishes, part of the Coral Triangle. Shrines populate corners of the gardens. On the side of the roads the traveler sees different types of seaweed drying, large parcels of it wrapped up in tarps in yards and men carrying tangled, soggy brown-green clumps of seaweed balanced at each end on a bamboo pole on their shoulders. The backs of old people are stooped from decades of seaweed farming. Children can be seen tying seaweed nets and helping their parents after school. Lured by higher paying jobs, fewer and fewer are taking up the profession. The Economics of Seaweed As global competition for resources is intensifying on an increasingly crowded planet and places to grow crops are running out, large-scale seaweed farming is on the threshold of taking off. To meet the international demand for refined and semi-refined seaweed products, the industry already produces tens of millions of tons every year across 44 countries and is worth billions of dollars. Though wellestablished governmentsupported commercial production in Indonesia began only in 1980, in recent years the industry has flourished. Seaweed farming on Bali has resulted in higher incomes for several hundred families and serves as backup should something happen to impact the tourism industry, the main income earner. Tourism is flourishing in Nusa Lembongan as are more attractive jobs like tour leading that doesn’t have the stigma of a laborer. Over the past five years, seaweed harvests have been declining due to changes in weather patterns and seawater mixing with fresh water that causes diminished growth. The Office of Marine and Fisheries of Bali Province recorded that ocean grass production in the second quarter 2016 decreased compared to the same period last year. In the latest figures available, from January to June 2015 the production was 57,375 tons, while the same period this year it was only 51,659 tons. (One ton is 907 kilos.) The monthly production of a 70 square-meter seaweed farm can be anywhere from 200 kg to 400 kg, earning anywhere from Rp500,000 to Rp800,000 per month. The farmers of

Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan sell the seaweed not directly to main buyers but to middlemen, so they receive less than the product’s true market value. The harvest is sent first to Surabaya, then exported to large international markets in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, France and Denmark for processing.

buds from their own crop because buying new seaweed seedlings is costly. A knot of katoni seeds runs around Rp15,000 while a knot of Spinosum seed is Rp5,000. For a 70-square-meter plot, 200 knots of seeds need to be planted. In an effort to increase production, Bali’s Office of Marine Fisheries provides seaweed seeds.

Despite 1,000 years of seaweed cultivation in Asia, it remains a labor-intensive industry. The work is very tedious and a speedy and reasonable return on investment is difficult. In the dry season, seaweed may not grow normally and much of it can die before being harvested. It takes a family of five to maintain one-quarter of a hectare, producing about 20 tons of dried seaweed per year on average. Traditionally, the reefs belong to the village, making it difficult for farms to be owned by outsiders. Most of the seaweed farms are owned by village cooperatives. One are (10 m X 10 m) of sea gardens costs around Rp5,000,000, with some farmers owning as many as ten are. Buying and selling farms is done without formal title. Any disputes are handled by the village council (banjar). Uses of Seaweed From the homely seaweed one can extract expensive and valuable products for use in the cosmetics and food production industries. Seaweeds are macroalgae and their tiny, unicellular cousins are called microalgae. Two kinds of seaweed are grown in Bali, the small red-brown pinusan or Spinosum and the large green kotoni (Eucheuma cottonni). One kilo of dried fast-growing brown Spinosum nets between Rp2800/kg and Rp5000/kg. The longer growing Cottonni species can fetch up to Rp12,000/kg but ties up the land for 30 days. Seaweed — or more respectfully, sea vegetables or sea greens — is a g r e e n e r alternative to many other food additives. After seaweed is dried and processed into a powder c a l l e d carrageenan, it’s used as an ingredient in plastics, cosmetics, animal feed and dozens of food products from breads, jellies, beers, hotdogs and hams to noodles, chocolate milk, ice cream and condiments. Both kinds are used in agar-agar, a vegetable gel-like thickening agent used in cooking. Besides its occasional and innocuous appearance in a salad bowl, seaweed as food can be a tough sell. You can eat it, but it’s an acquired taste. Though rich in nutrients and useful as an emergency food source in times or drought or famine, the thick leaves of Bali’s varieties are not suitable for fine dining dishes. It is not as edible and sought after as is the finer seaweeds of Japan. To remove the salt, Bali seaweeds must be boiled first until it turns white. Seaweed is also used to produce iodine and vitamin supplements. Seaweed is used as a fertilizer to grow potatoes in Ireland. There is also a worldwide effort now to turn the centuries-old seaweed industry into a major source of environmentally friendly biofuels that have more energy and less emission than fossil fuels. Cultivation Methods Seaweed is farmed in picture-perfect sea shallows that are clean and not subject to strong currents or extreme fluctuations in water temperature or salinity. A relatively fragile product, the farms remain covered in water at low tide, the reefs acting as natural protection from strong waves. During long summer days, sea currents gently flow over the fern-like blades as they ripple and sway, capturing nutrients and storing up sugars. All cultivation and harvesting takes place underwater. Stakes are first driven into the sandy ocean bottom and then strung with crisscrossing plastic ropes to hold the seaweed shoots. The ropes form a rectangle around 2.5 by 5 meters square. Fifty of these rectangles make up a 625-square-meter area; 16 squares occupy a hectare. A 100 square meter area of cultivated seaweed costs only Rp500,000 to established and can generate as much as Rp1,1 million, doubling the amount of investment. Twine is impregnated with millimeter-sized seaweed embryos then wound around the ropes. Most farmers prefer to replant

Each type of seaweed has a different growth cycle. There are two harvest periods either every 15 days or 35 days. The brown variant grows in 15 days. The other type takes over a month to grow. Seaweed can only be cultivated at low tide and is cropped by hand. Car tires are sometimes used to carry the harvested seaweed into shore. Farmers rise in the middle of the night to work under the light of lamps until dawn. Environmental Impacts Sea farming tends to preserve the culture and fabric of the community more than the hard tourism industry. It has continued to be harvested through political uncertainty, upheaval and national economic disarray. Algae cultivation also helps to preserve coral reefs by increasing diversity in places where it has been introduced and also provides an added niche for local species of fish and invertebrates in an area, increasing the production of herbivorous fishes and shellfish. The kelp forests of the ocean store carbon, create habitat in the intertidal world and produce enough oxygen in this “Amazon of the Seas” that rival the rain forests. Marine scientist claim that seaweed farming cleans up pollution from fish farms. Growing algae doesn’t compete with agriculture for water, fertilizer or land. In some countries, sewage can even be used to feed algae. Seaweed grows more quickly than land plants and turns sunlight into chemical energy five times more efficiently. But like everywhere in Bali, the Penida Islands are faced with the modern conundrum of tourism versus preservation, balancing the environment with the needs of the community who want a better life for their children. Environmental damage has been inevitable. Seaweed farms can cause changes in patterns of sedimentation, water movement, erosion, depletion of nutrients and alteration of natural habitat. Some seaweed farms have been set up on top of the coral reefs or adjacent to reefs which can have ecological impacts due to the shading of corals. Starting around 2005, tourism development on the three Penida islands dramatically accelerated and over time has negatively affected the seaweed industry. Sea gardens have been polluted and abandoned as a result of cultivation areas being used to moor boats transiting between Sanur and Nusa Lembongan. Due to the rapid growth of tourism, escalating levels of chlorine pollutes the water surrounding the three Penida islands. Increasing development has also reduced the area of beachfront on which to dry seaweed. New villa owners do not want seaweed farms on their doorstep encroaching upon their sea views. But young people who don’t choose to follow in their parents’ footsteps pose by far the biggest threat of all. Distracted by social networking and attracted to the Western lifestyle, they prefer to work in the more profitable tourism industry that promises better pay and more glamorous work opportunities.

Computer & Internet Podcasts for Digital Nomads Remote working has many different monikers: location independent work, remote work, virtual work, remote teams, virtual teams, offshore teams, digital nomad, distributed organizations, office optional. In the end, they all imply the same thing: more and more people are working outside an office, from home or even on the road.

relationships. Families are strengthened by flexibilities in schedules and a greater balance between work and personal life.’ Sample episodes include: Health & Fitness When Working Remote, Strategies for Finding Remote Work and Virtual Reality is on the Horizon for Remote Work. Sharp also blogs about remote working on his company website, www.cultivatenow.com.

One of the fastest growing trends in today’s business world is that people are increasingly less likely to be tied to a commute to a centralized office in order to work. New and existing technology tools – such as Slack, Trello, Google Hangouts, Asana, DropBox and many others, are making it possible for people to work outside the office. But where can remote workers turn for advice, strategies, tips and tricks, shared experience and personal stories from other remote workers? How do they get the ‘real scoop’ on what it takes to be a digital nomad? Luckily, one of the best new resources for remote workers is podcasts that focus on remote, virtual or nomadic work.

4) The Remote Podcast

Here is a list of podcasts that help advise or inspire people who are thinking about working remotely, or who already do so and are searching for a sense of community and shared experience. 1) Collaboration Superpowers This podcast is produced weekly by a consulting business of the same name (their website is http://www.collaborationsuperpowers.com) that helps people work together remotely. The company offers both online and in-person workshops on how to successfully work as part of a remote team, or how to set up and manage remote teams. Lisette Sutherland, Collaboration Superpower’s Director, interviews remote working experts each week on the podcast to find out how they deal with the challenges of working with remote teams, as well as the rewards and benefits. Sample episodes have included such topics as: Productivity for Remote Workers, Organizing Your Distributed Team and What Happens When Someone Leaves Your Remote Team. She is also releasing a book, called Stories of Remote Teams Doing Great Things, featuring strategies, advice and stories for and about remote teams and remote management. Sutherland’s stated goal in both establishing Collaboration Superpowers and producing a podcast is “to get the best people working together regardless of location.” 2) 21st Century Work Life Hosted by Pilar Orti, this weekly podcast is about ‘remote working, virtual teams and flexible working.’ The podcast features guests who discuss ‘different ways of making a living, of using technology at work and of managing [remote] teams.’ Sample episodes have included: Career Progression in Remote Work, Are Virtual Teams Dysfunctional, Making Virtual Meetings Comfortable and Security in Remote Teams. In addition to hosting the podcast, Pilar Orti also blogs about remote work at Virtual, Not Distant. Orti’s company, Virtual Not Distant, (https://www.virtualnotdistant.com) is a coaching business offering training, coaching and teambuilding services for companies setting up or switching over to remote teams. 3) Remote Works Hosted by Jonathan Sharp, this podcast is released every second week and focuses on the ‘culture, experience and community surrounding remote work.’ Sharp previously worked with the Union Pacific Railroad before becoming a work-from-home freelance web designer. In 2009, he built an enterprise-consulting organization that helps companies, managers and teams that are working remotely to be successful. Sharp’s personal philosophy is that remote teams ‘are a valuable tool not just for organizations but also local communities and families. Local communities benefit from flexible schedules, reduced traffic and strengthened local

Host Victor Kung is a digital nomad and online entrepreneur. He hosts this weekly podcast aimed at anyone thinking about becoming, or transitioning to being, a digital nomad. The podcast offers ‘personal stories of digital nomads from all over the world’ that explores how and why these people balance work and life (and travel) as remote workers. Kung has a blog about the location independent life at his website, www.theremotelifestyle.com. Kung also offers a free email course, through his website, on how to become a digital nomad. 5) Being Freelance Host Steve Folland talks to guest freelancers about the freelance life. Folland is a former radio presenter who switched from full-time work to freelancing in order to be his own boss and spend more time with his family. He started the Being Freelance podcast in January 2015 and has since interviewed dozens of freelancers about how and where they work. 6) Going Remote Host Charles Du is a former NASA engineer turned digital nomad. He was selected from over 50,000 applicants to participate in Remote Year, a network of 75 working professionals who are travelling and working remotely for a year around the world. Du travelled to over 12 countries as part of the group. Du hosts an irregular podcast interviewing other digital nomads about their lifestyles, tools and working remotely. He also blogs at his site, https://nomadcharles. com/blog. 7) Life Nomading Host Ian Hoyt discusses what he calls the ‘many different aspects of taking the unconventional path in your life, whether it be travel, working remotely, adventuring, starting your own business or following your passion.’ Hoyt is a blogger, private pilot, traveler, life nomad and creative marketer who has ‘devoted his life to exploring different lifestyles and adventures.’ Sample episodes include: Remote Working and The Startup Lifestyle. Hoyt maintains a creative agency called Wilbur and, in 2014, set up a company called Life Nomading (http://www.lifenomading.com) that offers Life Nomad adventure trips to Iceland and Ecuador. He also blogs about Life Nomading on the website. Enjoy these podcasts and get inspired to become a digital nomad, learn how to work more effectively and strategically while you roam or simply find a community of like-minded people so you don’t feel lonely working on the road.

Local News The Obamas holiday in Bali Barack and Michelle Obama, alongside their daughters Sasha and Malia, were seen paddling down the Ayung River, which is a popular spot for tourists on the Indonesian Island. The former president looked typically relaxed and stylish, even with his bulky helmet and life-jacket. Malia and Sasha - who recently celebrated her sweet 16 - seemed to enjoy their Indonesian adventure as well. The Obamas flew into the popular tourist destination on Friday evening before heading straight for the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, Ubud, where villas cost upwards of $2,500 a night. On Friday the family took a walk through the lush, green Jatiluwih rice terrace, one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. They looked relaxed as Barack donned a blue polo shirt and Michelle kept it casual in a baseball cap and vest, with her jacket tied round her waist. Barack, who lived in Indonesia in the 1960s, is later scheduled to travel to the island of Java to speak at the 4th Indonesian Diaspora Congress in Jakarta, where he spent his childhood after his mother Ann Dunham married second husband Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian man. The family arrived at the airport via Guam on Friday evening, with Ngurah Rai Military Air Base commander Col. I Wayan Superman enforcing security measures along with scores of soldiers and police officers. Barack and Michelle are also joined by Malia, who is on her gap year before she starts college at Harvard in the fall, and Sasha, who recently celebrated her 16th birthday and wrapped up the school year at Sidwell Friends. Both Barack and Michelle kept it casual in jeans as they were greeted on the tarmac by Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika before the family’s motorcade headed towards Ubud. The Obamas then traveled to the Four Seasons, where freestanding villas come with a private pool and a spacious sun terrace overlooking the lush rice fields surrounding the Ayung River. He’s scheduled to visit Yogyakarta, a city known for its cultural heritage where Obama’s mother did anthropological research. He will then head to the capital of Jakarta to give a keynote speech at the Indonesian Diaspora Congress. Obama was born in Honolulu to a white American mother and a Kenyan father after they met as students at the University of Hawaii. They eventually moved to Indonesia for a few years in the late 1960s before Barack returned to Hawaii. Many Indonesians felt a strong bond with Obama because of his exposure to Indonesia and its culture, even making him a two-metre (six-foot) bronze statue that was placed in his former school. The statue of ‘Little Barry’ - as Obama was known to his Indonesian school friends - depicts the boy Obama dressed in shorts and a T-shirt with a butterfly perched on his hand. Indonesia’s foreign ministry said Obama’s visit to holiday in Indonesia came after several invitations from President Joko Widodo. [Daily Mail June 26, 2017]

Kerobokan escape: Two prisoners returned to Bali, Australian Shaun Davidson still on the run Two prisoners who escaped from Kerobokan prison have been returned to Bali amid tight security. Bulgarian Dimitar Nikolove Ilieve and Indian Sayed Mohammed Said arrived at Bali’s international airport from Dili in East Timor late on Saturday, and will now be questioned by police who believe they were part of a syndicate. Two other prisoners, Australian Shaun Davidson and Malaysian Tee Kok King, remain on the run. “We will further investigate which syndicate helped them escape to another country,” Bali’s police chief Petrus Golose said while commending the work of East Timorese police. “After we have done interviews with these convicts, we are going to find out who else is involved in the escape.” The prisoners who have been returned will undergo health checks before they are questioned. Iliev is serving a seven-year sentence for money laundering and Said 14 years for drug offences. Davidson, from Perth, had less than three months left of his one-year sentence for passport fraud. It is believed the four escaped the prison through a 50-by-70centimetre hole found in a wall, which connected to a 15-metre-long water tunnel. Davidson has used social media to indicate he is in Amsterdam, but that has not been verified. “We are still pursuing them,” Inspector Golose said of Davidson and the Malaysian man. “If they have managed to cross borders we can also work together with other countries.” The ABC’s Foreign Correspondent recently spent a week filming behind Kerobokan’s walls, revealing an overcrowded and deeply underfunded prison. On a normal day there are just eight guards on duty. Four in the watchtowers and four on the ground to guard around 1,300 male prisoners. “We have to admit that since the beginning of the escape, and how it happened, it’s because of the lack of supervision,” Inspector Golose acknowledged, saying the system needed evaluating. “Because it’s dangerous if convicts can escape from prison.” [ABC News June 25, 2017]

Bali police say a crime syndicate could be behind brazen Bali breakout Australian Shaun Davidson’s escape from Bali’s Kerobokan prison was so brazen and well-organised a professional crime syndicate may have been involved, local police have said. The claim comes as two of the four Bali jail birds, who dug their way out of the notorious prison through thick mud, have arrived back in Indonesia after their escape was thwarted in East Timor’s capital of Dili. The two recaptured men were found near a port in East Timor’s capital, Dili, on Thursday. Police seized $US7,000 in cash in their hotel room. Davidson, who was sentenced for immigration offences last year after using another man’s passport, had just two months and 15 days left to serve. He was going to be deported to Australia where he is facing a number of drug charges in Perth. The Perth man appears to be taunting police checking in on social media from multiple European cities despite the fact he may still be Indonesia. First it was Amsterdam, now Copenhagen. Bali bombing: Guantánamo inmate Hambali charged over 2002 attack A US war court has charged an Indonesian detainee at Guantánamo Bay in connection with the 2002 bombing in Bali that marked Indonesia’s deadliest terror strike, according to court documents obtained by the Associated Press. The detainee known as Hambali also was charged in connection with an attack on the JW Marriott in Jakarta in 2003. According to rules of the US military commission, a military court will later decide whether a trial will be held. Hambali was captured in Bangkok in 2003, in a joint operation by the CIA and Thai police. Last year a US government review board rejected the release of Hambali, saying he continued to be a “significant threat to the security of the United States”. Hambali, whose real name is Encep Nurjaman, appeared before the board in August by video link seeking his release after being held for 10 years at the base without charge. The Pentagon described him in a profile released ahead of the hearing as a leader of a south-east Asia based extremist group known as Jemaah Islamiyah. Hambali also is alleged to have had links to al-Qaida. Hambali has been charged with murder and attempted murder in violation of the law of war; intentionally causing serious bodily injury; terrorism; attacking civilians; and related charges. Effective October 1, 2017, only E-money accepted on Bali’s Mandara toll road Bisnis Bali reports that the Indonesian banking sector has promised to fully support a national policy that will no longer accept cash payment from toll road users, effective October 1, 2017, leaving e-money cards as the only remaining option for vehicle operators. The regional CEO of Bank Mandiri for Bali and Nusa Tenggara, R. Erwan Djoko Hermawan, said on Thursday, June 22, 2017, said his bank would support the policy in order to reduce waiting times at the entrance to toll roads. The bank has added 1,000 e-money cards with an additional 500 cards expected shortly. Credit cards are not an option for paying toll fees given the relative low value of each trip, the need for card holder verification, and the additional need for a signature that would together defeat the goal of making use of the toll more efficient. An estimated 2-4% of Bali toll users currently pay with e-money cards. [www.balidiscovery.com June 25, 2017] Bali Immigration calls on pecalang for help ‘supervising foreigners’ Immigration in Bali is calling on traditional Balinese security guards, pecalang, to help them “supervise foreigners” on the island. Head of Ngurah Rai Special Class I Immigration, Ari Budijanto said immigration will be working closely with traditional village leadership as well, to participate and play an active role in keeping foreigners under tabs. To optimize the monitoring of foreigners by desa adat, traditional villages, Budijanto conducted a socialization event in Jimbaran, which was something akin to a town hall meeting. “This socialization was expected to increase the understanding of the community, especially pecalang and desa adat, about immigration tasks, so they can participate and play an active role in the supervision of foreigners,” Budijanto said, as quoted by state news agency, Antara Bali. Though Antara Bali’s coverage does not really go into what exactly immigration along with pecalang and desa adat will be looking for, as they “supervise foreigners,” it seems their focus will likely be visa violations. [Coconuts Bali June 13, 2017] Angry North Kuta residents dispense harsh street justice to 12-year old thief NusaBali reports that a 12-year-old boy, identified only with the initials FA, was caught in the act of stealing Rp. 213,000 from a local tire repair shop on Jalan Padang Luwih, Dalaung, North Bali on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at around 10:00 pm. Angry local residents set upon the grade school student, stripped him down to only his underpants, and tied him to a roadside electrical pole. A police patrol from North Kuta discovered the boy and brought him to the police station to keep him safe from the angry local residents. Police say the young teenager noticed the tire repair shop was quiet and decided to steal the money left in the tire shop by its owner, I Komang Agus Jaya Arimbawa (35). The boy was spotted leaving the tire shop by a neighbor who reported the incident to Arimbawa who detained the student. When interrogated, the thief admitted stealing the money that was found in his possession by the shop owner. Upon hearing his confession, the boy was taken to the roadside by the local residents who stripped him and tied him to the utility pole. Motorists passing the location and recording the boy’s capture on their handphones caused traffic jams on the adjoining street. The 12-year-old’s parents were called to the police station to take charge of their child. Meanwhile, police have condemned the actions of neighbors who took the law into their own hands in administering street justice to the grade-schooler. Police said the case is being handled under Indonesia’s child protection laws. [www.balidiscovery. com June 18, 2107] 5 Bali Police officers reported to internal affairs after shooting underage suspect Five officers serving in the Criminal Investigation Unit of Bali Police have been reported to Bali Police’s Internal Affairs (Propam) for alleged unethical and unprofessional behavior while carrying out their duties. The parents of EGL, a 17-year-old mugging suspect, brought the case to Propam on Thursday a couple of months after their son was shot in the leg whilst under arrest, reports local paper Tribun Bali. In Indonesia, it’s not uncommon for police to shoot fleeing (or ‘uncooperative’) suspects in the leg. ‘But have the police no humanity, shooting a 17-year-old?’ argues the suspect’s mother, Kostafina Ludia Marantika. Marantika was accompanied by a representative from the LBH Woman Crisis Center, an NGO that fights for gender equality and the protection of rights of women and children in Bali. EGL was shot when trying to flee the crime scene. The shooting was in the Jimbaran area near his parents’ house on March 23, 2017, according to reports. However, local news reports have failed to mention how badly the suspect was injured as a result of the shot to the leg. The misconduct report to Propam is questioning what kind of shooting procedure police have pertaining to minors and what falls in accordance with the juvenile justice system. EGL is currently facing trial in juvenile court over eight alleged muggings in Denpasar and Badung. Police have said that they shot EGL in the leg when he tried to evade arrest. Cultural and Holistic Groups Rally to Sound Therapist’s Music Reconciliation Project A former Capitol Hill US-Iran peace strategist gains local support from Bali community leaders as he launches an ambitious and unconventional project of reconciliation between the Middle East and Western world through the power of music.

DeNeefe and ARMA in support are Ahimsa in Action, Akasha Creative Hub, Alchemy Raw Food Academy, Bali Silent Retreat Center, Bali Spirit Festival, Bali Storytellers Festival, Casa Luna, Namaste: the Spiritual Shop, Radiantly Alive and Taksu Bali.

Now a Bali-based sound therapist and vocalist, Shervin Boloorian’s latest endeavour is a cross-cultural music activism project centred around a new Sufi-influenced album. Contained are sacred songs with wisdom from world-revered 13th Century Sufi poet Rumi, all in original

Today, Rumi is still a top selling author in the USA, respected across both Western and Muslim worlds with his works translating into 23 different languages. Boloorian explained Rumi’s voice was perfect for such an album as it easily crosses faith, nationality and ideology. “Rumi’s popularity is surging just when the world’s relationship with the Islam and the Middle East seems at its lowest point. I see this as a paradox and an opportunity,” he said. “A sacred music project drawing from Rumi’s original language creates something new and positive for people to absorb in terms of Iran, Islam and the Middle East.”

The project is already making waves here in Bali, recruiting over a dozen major local holistic businesses, cultural groups and leaders endorsing the album in a first-of-its kind local initiative. Indonesian Artist and Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) spokesperson Amron Paul Yowono believes the project has already rallied strong support because of “the spirit of peace embodied by Shervin’s project”. “ARMA endorses it, and others are invited to as well,” said Yowono.

Since leaving his Washington D.C. policy advisor role, Boloorian U-turned into one of Bali’s most popular and celebrated multiinstrumentalists and vocalists in residence, after training at a respected sound healing academy and spearheading a movement in 2012 to make sound therapy concerts part of Ubud’s live music culture. Boloorian launched the campaign last month to complete his album and embark on an international live music workshop tour, where he hopes to generate further global support for the project at a grass-roots level by “shifting audiences’ attitudes through experiential engagement”. “If the momentum is there, I see this blossoming into a global collaborative,” predicts Boloorian. “Music and the arts are agents of change and awareness, we haven’t seen them reach their full potential yet.”

Persian and Arabic languages.

Boloorian’s forthcoming album ‘One with the Beloved’ is being crowd-funded with hopes of igniting a greater ongoing global movement and dialogue between audiences from the East and West, finding common ground around universal messages in Sufi texts, as well as through Boloorian’s music. The story of the album is a reflection of my own journey, going from a very alienated and troubled place to one of more calm, which Bali helped instil,” said Boloorian. “Anyone who spends his time tackling the huge divide the world is currently experiencing with music and the teachings of Rumi is worth supporting,” said Ubud Writers and Readers Festival director Janet DeNeefe. “Now more than ever we need to focus on the fundamental importance of peace and compassion to find a solution to our current global dilemma. Shervin’s music offers an extraordinary, healing journey with mystical sounds, traditional and new, that remind us that love and understanding is the only way forward,” she added. Among Bali organisations joining

This project is particularly close to Boloorian’s heart, after his own experiences as an Iranian refugee migrating to the UK in 1978. He first experienced powerful effects from sound as a child after discovering the ability to hum to himself as a method of providing comfort and emotional support during highly traumatic and stressful periods in his young life. “I was three when I left Iran, my country of birth, and joined the many millions who no longer had an official home state,” said Boloorian. “One of the most devastating experiences the psyche can undergo is to lose a home.” Spending over nine years in Washington and Sacramento, Boloorian led and advised US-Iran peace coalitions and

reviewed a coalition Iran policy brief sent to President Obama’s desk. He worked with a number of congressional, non-profit and community leaders, Nobel Prize Laureates, and ambassadors as an advocate for disarmament and avoiding war with Iran. After nearly a decade, Boloorian decided it was time to leave politics to reconnect with the power of sound he had discovered as a child, becoming a Tama-Do certified sound therapist, musician and vocalist. “I became a sound therapist because I realised peace is more about soulful living, not just some distant ideal. That meant coming back to basics and putting personal harmony first which I didn’t have in D.C.,” he said. Boloorian is now turning his efforts towards engaging a wider global audience as his Kickstarter enters its final month. “I’m urging visitors, other local, national and international groups, businesses and community figures to join this alliance and back us in any way you can. We need to first push the Kickstarter over the finish line,” he said. “I know people anywhere can be touched by these messages and the music is just as universal.” The One with the Beloved campaign concludes on July 25. Experience Shervin Boloorian’s Sound Medicine sound healing concerts in July every Wednesday @ 7:30pm - The Yogabarn. Shervin will lead special Sacred Sound and live music events on Sunday, July 16 @ 2:30pm (Indigenous Dreamtime), Sufi Sounds on Sunday, July 23 @3pm (Connect to the Beloved) and July 31 @ 7:30pm (Spirit Night: Sacred World Music and Healing Sounds) at the Yogabarn.
