WHY DO I FEEL SO TIRED? With the holiday season upon us we all need to be on top of our game. There is nothing worse than having a plethora of things to do, and not being able to muster up enough energy to get past breakfast. Here are some of the more common medical causes of ongoing fatigue that you might want to consider having looked at if you feel that your energy has been sapped. Anemia The fatigue caused by anemia is the result of a lack of red blood cells, which bring oxygen from your lungs to your tissues and cells. You may feel weak and short of breath. An iron or vitamin deficiency, blood loss, internal bleeding, or a chronic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, or kidney failure may cause anemia. In the tropics, intestinal worms are also a frequent cause of anemia.
Diabetes More than a million people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes every year, but many more may not even know they have it. Sugar, also called glucose, is the fuel that keeps your body going. And that means trouble for people with type 2 diabetes who can’t use glucose properly, causing it to build up in the blood. Without enough energy to keep the body running smoothly, people with diabetes often notice fatigue as one of the first warning signs. The symptoms: Aside from feeling tired all the time, other signs include excessive thirst, frequent urination, hunger, weight loss, irritability, yeast infections, and blurred vision. The tests: There are several simple blood tests that can be performed to diagnose diabetes.
Women of childbearing age are especially susceptible to iron-deficiency anemia because of blood loss during menstruation and the body’s need for extra iron during pregnancy and breastfeeding. B12 deficiency is a special kind of anemia (Pernicious anemia) caused by the inability to digest B12 from you food. If this is the case you may need B12 injections every month or so. The symptoms: Feeling tired all the time is a major one. Others include extreme weakness, difficulty sleeping, lack of concentration, rapid heartbeat, chest pains, and headache. Simple exercise, such as climbing the stairs or walking short distances, can cause fatigue. The tests: A thorough evaluation for anemia includes a physical exam and blood tests, including a complete blood count (CBC), to check the levels of your red blood cells. It’s also standard to check the stool for blood loss. Thyroid Disease When your thyroid hormones are out of whack, even everyday activities will wipe you out. The thyroid gland is found in the front of the neck and produces hormones that control your metabolism. Too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism), and metabolism speeds up. Too little (hypothyroidism), and metabolism slows down. The symptoms: Hyperthyroidism causes muscle fatigue and weakness, which you may notice first in the thighs. Exercises such as riding a bike or climbing stairs become more difficult. Other symptoms include unexplained weight loss, feeling warm all the time, increased heart rate, shorter and less frequent menstrual flows, and increased thirst. Hypothyroidism causes fatigue, an inability to concentrate, and muscle soreness, even with minor activity. Other symptoms include weight gain due to water retention, feeling cold all the time (even in warmer weather), heavier and more frequent menstrual flows, and constipation. The tests: Thyroid disease can be detected with a blood test and is easily treatable.
carry on with their normal activities and are easily exhausted with little exertion. The symptoms: Other signs include headache, muscle and joint pain, weakness, tender lymph nodes, and an inability to concentrate. Chronic fatigue syndrome remains puzzling, because it has no known cause. The tests: There is none. Your doctor must rule out other conditions with similar symptoms, such as lupus and multiple sclerosis, before making the diagnosis. Sleep Apnea You could have this sleep-disrupting problem if you wake up feeling tired no matter how much rest you think you got. Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. In the most common type, obstructive sleep apnea, your upper airway actually closes or collapses for a few seconds, which, in turn, alerts your brain to wake you up to begin breathing again. Someone with obstructive sleep apnea may stop breathing dozens or even hundreds of times a night. The symptoms: Sleep apnea is often signaled by snoring and is generally followed by tiredness the next day. Because sleep apnea can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke, it’s important to be tested.
Depression More than “the blues,” depression is a major illness that affects the way we sleep, eat, and feel about others and ourselves. Without treatment, the symptoms of depression may last for weeks, months, or even years. The symptoms: We don’t all experience depression in the same way. But commonly, depression can cause decreased energy, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, problems with memory and concentration, and feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and negativity. The tests: Your doctor may be able to identify it by asking you a series of questions. If you experience five or more of these symptoms below for more than 2 weeks, or if they interfere with your life, see your doctor or mental health professional: fatigue or loss of energy; sleeping too little or too much; a persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood; reduced appetite and weight loss; increased appetite and weight gain; loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed; restlessness or irritability; persistent physical symptoms that don’t respond to treatment, such as headaches, chronic pain, or constipation and other digestive disorders; difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions; feeling guilty, hopeless, or worthless; thoughts of death or suicide. Chronic Fatigue This baffling condition causes a strong fatigue that comes on quickly. People who suffer from CFS feel too tired to
The tests: This involves an overnight stay at a sleep clinic, where you’ll undergo a polysomnogram, which is a painless test that will monitor your sleep patterns, breathing changes, and brain activity. There are many, many conditions that can cause fatigue, and if you have already addressed the obvious improvements that can be made to your lifestyle (exercise, diet, rest, alcohol & smoking), and you are still tired, you should consult your doctor. HAPPY HOLIDAYS ☺

12 Airbnb user with 881 London properties earns US$15.6m p.a. Guess who makes even more with less....?
An Airbnb landlord in London made US$15.6 million last year renting out 881 properties, according to new research. That figure represents the most money made in revenue by any Airbnb owner in the world in the last 12 months, but... another Airbnb ‘host’ was not too far behind raking in $15.5 million through 504 properties in Bali and took the biscuit when it came to profitability, earning a yearly average of $40,983 per property. Tokyo had the second highest average earnings per property at $36,130. By this reckoning London limped home in a modest seventh place. Airbnb is one of the classic online economy success stories, fulfilling the vast public appetite for affordable accommodation matched by an equal need for owners and tenants to make money from properties they own or occupy. Of course, just as with Amazon or Uber, not everyone is happy about that. The hospitality industry for one, has conflicted views about the Airbnb phenomenon. Back in 2007, when Airbnb was launched in San Francisco, it was a vehicle for people to make some extra dosh renting out a spare room or, famously, an air mattress on the living room floor, that or their flat, their house when they went off on holiday. Today smart businessmen and women, plus realty companies worldover, use Airbnb as a tool to rent out multiple rooms and entire properties as well as flipping and managing sublets on a huge scale.
Making Millions? A look at Airbnb’s highest earning landlords London (881* properties) $15.6m Bali (504) $15.5m Cape Town (114) $7.6m Havana (132) $6.9m Sydney (245) $4.1m Paris (82) $4m Barcelona (162) $3.7m Madrid (124) $3.6m Lisbon (204) $3.4m Melbourne (157) $2.7 *(number of properties managed) Top owners in cities including Cape Town , Paris and Barcelona all banked at least a $1.5m through dozens of fl ats, rooms and houses. The new data coming from Airbnb analysts AirDNA shows how the accommodation website has shifted from flat-sharing to property management with single operations turning over huge sums of money. “Airbnb is no longer a community just for individuals renting out their space or properties in their own” said AirDNA CEO Scott Shatford. “We see traditional property management companies operating as many as 1,000 listings. These numbers don’t show a multimillionaire sitting on a gold mine. These are businesses that have emerged in this new economy, with hundreds of employees, managing other people’s second homes”, he says. The figures show that earnings per property are highest in Bali, Indonesia’s premier holiday destination, where average revenue per annum was US$40,983, while a typical landlord in Tokyo is still making $36,130 p.a., while in London the figure is $20,958. Airbnb aren’t altogether happy with reports of this more corporate trend. A spokesperson for Airbnb said that the typical host in the UK earned about $3,800 and hosted for three nights a month, adding that the Air DNA data is not official as it has been “scraped”, though he did not elaborate as to why that should in any way invalidate the findings. “Scraping” simply means information has been automatically taken from online websites. If the information originally posted is correct, then so is it’s use elsewhere; although clever use of such context can “spin” it one way or another. Shatford claims the way Airbnb listings are managed is shifting. “It’s not a good trend for people who use Airbnb for unique accommodation as an alternative for a traditional hotel” he warned. “These people want to meet people, and for them it’s getting harder to decipher what is a corporate rental hotel against the one where Jane is going to meet you at the door and tell you about all the cool things to do in town.”
AirDNA says that 65 percent of global hosts are still individuals, while 35 percent are management companies, but he says the ratio is shifting quickly in favour of the professionals. Airbnb, on the other hand, claims that in the UK at least 80 percent of its hosts are “sharing a space in their primary home” As evidence of its worlwide committment to keeping it upfront and personal. Their spokesman said: “the vast majority of Airbnb hosts are regular people who share their homes – typically the biggest expense – to boost their income and support their families. Whatever the case, “ the Airbnb model is unique and empowers regular people, boosts local communities and is subject to local tax, the company insists. It also makes Airbnb fundamentally different to companies that take large sums of money out of the places they do business”, he said. The company points to the housing limits it has implemented, again in London, this year, with the support of the Mayor, stipulating that entire-home listings not be “shared for more than 90 days”. It should be noted here also that the amount Airbnb users actually make is the sales revenue figure - not their profit, which would be less their expenses such as renewals and replacements, tax, rental (if applicable), insurance and cleaning etc.
A lucrative move for landlords? Where you can make the most money renting out properties on Airbnb Bali $40,983* Tokyo $36,130 Barcelona $28,648 Lisbon $27,780 Rome $27,677 Los Angeles $26,344 London $20,958 Amsterdam $19,255 Melbourne $18,855 New York $18,618 *Average yearly earnings per property Today, according to AirDNA, Airbnb Bali properties manage an average per night rental of Rp.1,929,253 (c.$150.00) with an occupancy rate of 51 percent at an average Rp.23.1m ($1,750) per let. It is in the nature of Bali and the intense “villafication” it has underegone in the past 15 years that it has a higher percentage of “entire-home” rentals at 57% than the majority of destinations. According to AirDNA there are some 6,323 active hosts in Bali comprising some 1,000 who are what they classify as “Super Hosts”, with about 3,300 multi-listing hosts, while single entry hosts account for the balance of some 2,000.

How did Bali manage to scoop the Airbnb pool, when it comes to highest yield? For Bali the advent of Airbnb in 2011 was a dream waiting to happen, a match made in heaven. Those of you in days gone by who ever contemplated renting out their place, have only to cast your mind back to those days and what was involved. It was a long, complicated and expensive process upon which many of us gave up. First, you had to do your market research to see what you could reasonably get and who would pay it. Then the commissioning of good photography. Next, the perils of finding and funding someone to build a decent website for you and not be scammed in the process. Then maintaining it plus the associated marketing and advertising; the problems of communicating with, vetting and getting paid by your would-be clients. And, after all that, the fear you’d rented your home to the family from hell and you’d come back to find your home trashed. No wonder many baulked. All that changed when Airbnb arrived in Bali and took almost all the angst out of the process, doing a great job for a modest commission. They also did one more thing that radically changed the game for the better (depending on your perspective that is)....it made short stay lets easy and viable for everyone. In the past owners would plump for the relative safety and convenience of a long let despite the hefty discount that would accompany it. Now they don’t have to. One last thing.... now, who do you think Bali’s very own, one in a thousand, King of the Super Hosts can be? Some of us would love to know.

17 Excerpt from: ‘A Journey of Riches: the Benefit of Challenge’ In 2014, I was invited to join a women’s empowerment group. This had always been a dream of mine to come together with other like-minded, conscious women who truly desired to support and empower one another. The new leader of our women’s group turned out to be pushy and several women felt bullied by her including me. I tried to speak honestly with her about this, but she became quite defensive and angry towards me. A few weeks later she asked me to leave the group. She blamed me for all the problems the group was having and said it was my negative energy that was blocking the group from moving forwards. I was gutted – I felt totally disempowered and betrayed. I couldn’t believe this was happening. I could feel my original wound rising up again. How could I have been so wrong? After our call, I sat down on my sofa feeling a deep despair. In that moment the energy waves powerfully thumped me like I’ve never experienced before; wave after wave of despair struck me in my heart center and flowed down the front of my body. This was beyond any feelings of depression or personal pain – I started to realize that I was feeling the collective despair of the all the women in the world who had been disempowered. I knew in that moment that I had agreed to facilitate this process for women everywhere, so that a new possibility of empowerment could be actualized for all of us. My tears flowed down my cheeks and on to my chest as I cried for a very long time for all of the women who had been bullied and betrayed. Kwan Yin had come to show me the despair that she transforms for everyone with her compassion and forgiveness. C/CE/G-30 August 17
It was not long after this experience that things took a turn for the worst. I was riding my motorbike home one night from a friend’s anniversary party. A friend offered me to stay the night at her place, but I politely declined saying that I preferred to go home. About 10 minutes from my house on a very dark road, a white dog suddenly appeared in front of my tire. There was no time to brake or slow down. Everything happened within seconds as my bike crashed into the dog and I slid with my bike across the road. I remember laying there unable to move thinking “Is this it? I’m okay if it’s time for me to go now.” Then suddenly a voice boomed in my head, “No! It’s not your time!” This meant I would suffer as I could feel I was injured badly. Some Balinese men saw me and came rushing into the road to pick me up. They carefully carried me and lay me down on the ground speaking in Bahasa Indonesian. I was semi conscious so I couldn’t comprehend or answer them at first. Finally I started to become more conscious and gave them my husband’s telephone number. I asked them what happened to the white dog I hit. None of them saw the dog which was odd. My right shoulder had a bad brake and the doctor said I really needed surgery to repair the break properly. I refused and decided after three days to see a specialist. He told me that I didn’t have to have surgery, but it was unlikely that my arm would heal perfectly without it. I knew that this was my opportunity to trust in my own healing abilities, so I chose not to have surgery. Instead, every day I gave myself energy healing and took Chinese bone joining medicine. It was excruciating to heal myself, as I could actually feel the bones moving back into place. After six weeks, I decided it was time to get another x-ray to see the progress thus far. When the new doctor looked at my old x-ray, he said he would have absolutely advised me to get surgery. However, after looking at my new x-ray he was astounded by what he saw. My arm had nearly completely healed. There was only a thin gray line where the break once was and the bone that had been jutting out had moved back to its original place without any signs of being broken. He was totally baffled. I just smiled and said, “Positive thinking.” There were still many months of rehabilitating my muscles which had become quite stiff and weak from being constrained in a sling for so many weeks. Several months later I had a reading with a lovely psychic reader. When I told her about my accident she looked at me and said, “That wasn’t an accident. You know the woman. She sent you that energy to kill you, but you’re no longer in contact with her.”
C/CE/G-8 Nov. 17
Her words struck me and in that moment I knew who she was referring to – it was the woman who had bullied me and the other women in the Women’s Empowerment group. A part of me was horrified to think that someone wanted to kill me. I felt anger rising within me as I asked, “Why did she do this?” “You were a threat to her authority. She was not really holding the feminine energies of empowerment but instead was still stuck in the masculine energies of domination. Your role in this situation was to help her realize this and change it, but instead she chose not to.”
Trust our experience to manage your goods
I felt a profound sense of relief to know the truth of this whole situation that had occurred over one year affecting me and my family on so many levels. A few months afterwards, I had another psychic reading from a man in New York who told me almost exactly the same thing, although I didn’t reveal what the other psychic had said. There was no longer doubt in my mind that this was totally true. I had to make a choice about what to do: 1. I could continue to hold on to my anger and unforgiveness. 2. I could let it all go and move forwards in my life. With time and more self healing, I eventually let go of my anger and forgave this woman who I knew was deeply in pain. I began to feel compassion for her suffering and realized that she had attacked me because I had come into her life so she could see her pain and deep seated anger towards her mother and finally heal it. Just as she was a catalyst for me to truly be empowered and understand what true compassion is. I have had several teachers in the past 15 years that have had a profound impact on my life. However, my biggest learning has come from the challenges and adversity that have arisen in my life that I have faced and overcome. More and more I understand how all of these challenging experiences are actually gifts which have facilitated deep transformation and empowerment. With each challenge I have become stronger through my willingness to learn and grow from the lessons that life brings me. Instead of closing down, which many of us want to do when faced with challenges, let’s ask questions to help us understand how each difficulty in our lives has helped us rise higher and higher. It is incredible how life gives us exactly the lessons we need to expand our consciousness and open our hearts to become compassionate human beings. Every day I feel such gratitude for my life knowing that I can make a difference in the world with the work that I do facilitating consciousness and healing for myself and others.

Not Just for the Fur Kids…. Now There’s Room for Hoomans Too! For many of us, our fur babies are an important part of the family and traveling or going away without them is akin to losing a limb! Canggu Pet Resort has provided the answers to pet boarding and care in Bali for several years now, offering a safe, secure, clean and caring home for all kinds of pets while us mums and dads travel abroad for holidays or business. Recently they have extended their facilities to include lodgings of a different nature! Leaving our animals for even the shortest period of time can be just too much to bear for some and finding reasonably priced accommodation which allows you to bring your pets with you is often a tricky task. Not any more! Canggu Pet Resort have recently added two fully self contained rooms across from the boarding kennels, giving pet lovers the opportunity to stay with their furry best friend! More than just a motel room, each space is kitted out with kitchen and bathroom facilities and comfortably sleeps two adults in a loft style mezzanine bedroom area above! Each room fronts onto a lush, grassy area which is fully fenced for your pet’s comfort and security. There is also an added community area for extra space to spread out and the opportunity to socialise with other guests and watch your pups play at the
same time! Generally for short term rental, these rooms are the perfect solution for those who need or wish to stay in the Canggu area or beyond and bring their pets along too with the option to come and go as you please. As well as pet boarding and now, accommodation for ‘hoomans’ too, Canggu Pet Resort also offers obedience and agility training from their fully qualified and award winning staff as well as a doggy day care option. This is a terrific opportunity for your pampered pupper or kitty to develop some socialisation skills with other animals or simply the opportunity to run and play! Fur kids are also grouped together into similar ‘sizes’ so they can play safely during outdoors time. One of the most comprehensive and well equipped kennels on the island, Canggu Pet Resort boasts a large, secure grassy area, a pool just for pooches to cool off on hot summer days (it is a resort after all!) and a variety of ramps, tunnels and toys for agility training and exercise. Christine, her daughter Maya and the rest of the staff have an obvious affinity and skill with animals and show genuine care for every four legged friend who comes to stay. As the holiday season approaches and many of us who live on the island are planning our Christmas getaways, now is
the time to book your pets into their own resort for a holiday! Notoriously busy over this time of year, be sure to get in early and secure a place at Canggu Pet Resort for your puss or pooch before they are fully booked. Four legged friends of all shapes and sizes are welcome and you can leave the island for Christmas secure in the knowledge that your fur baby is safe and sound and living it up too! For details about kennel facilities, training and obedience services or to find out more about availability for their new rooms, contact Christine today on: 081 238 139 28 or email them at: canggupetresort@yahoo.com

Follow the Path Less Travelled! Do not go where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, And leave a trail (Ralph Waldo Emerson). As many fellow Rotarians before us, my husband David and I are following a non-traditional path in a foreign country. We sold our home in Australia and moved to “The Island of the Gods.” Family and friends frequently asked: “But what will you do in Bali? Sit on a beach all day?” David would reply with a wide smile and then wince, as I gave him a sharp kick under the table at a farewell dinner in Adelaide. Actually it is a very good question! Living in a foreign country is very different to being a tourist.
We wanted to contribute to Bali, meet new people and become active members of the international communities. So we joined the Rotary Bali Club, Nusa Dua and found that it provides all of these things. It has given us a purpose for living in Bali: an opportunity for service and international fellowship. Our mixed membership includes Indonesian citizens and expatriates who whilst maintaining links in
their own countries, such as: Germany, Holland, USA, Japan and Australia, make valuable contributions to the local and international communities in Bali and wider Indonesia. Rotary Indonesia began in 1927 but its activities were stopped twice. The first, when the Second World War began in 1942 and the second, in 1963 when Rotary was prohibited from functioning by the Indonesian Government of the times. Rotary Bali Club Nusa Dua began again in May, 1991 and was the first club in Bali to conduct its meetings in the English language. Rotary Club Bali Nusa Dua will celebrate its 25th Silver Anniversary at a Gala Dinner on Saturday, February 3rd, 2018. In these twenty five years serving the Bali community, the Club rose over US$1.500.000 for the benefit of many people in need, in the Bali region and beyond. The event will be combined with a fund raising programme, including raffles, door prizes and auctions, with the support of Sponsors from its hotel and b u s i n e s s communities. You too, are welcome to attend and may
All monies raised through Rotary Bali Club Nusa Dua, are used to support its extensive charitable programme, which includes but is not restricted to: Cleft Palate and Lip; Dental Corrections; HIV/Aids; Yasan Kasih Anak Kanker; Yayasan Puspadi Bali; Suryani Institute; End Polio Now; Orphanage Christmas Party; Bali Children Foundation and Secondary School Scholarships. All this is only possible through the generous support and donations from many local, regional, national and international companies, institutions and individuals. Much more needs to be done however, to help support the local community and beyond. If you are looking for a purpose, to meet people and to contribute to the local and international communities, then join the Rotary Bali Club Nusa Dua. Come along to one of our weekly Thursday lunch meetings (12.30 p.m. to 2 p.m.) held at the Bali International Golf Club, in BTDC Nusa Dua. Rotarians from all over the world are welcome to join our weekly luncheon. Mark February 3rd, 2018 in your diaries if you are interested to attend our 25th Silver Anniversary Gala Dinner. More details regarding this event will be published soon. And last, but not least, check out the Rotary Bali Club, Nusa Dua web-site and facebook page to learn more about our Club and its activities. There you will also find details of our meetings. In closing, we would like to send our sincere thanks to all our national and international supporters, on behalf of the many children and adults in Bali and beyond, who now live a better quality of life.

Fire Up the Garden - Volcanic Ash, Terra Preta, Biochar I had the idea of writing about the benefits of charcoal and wood ash for the garden, but in light of the recent goings on up at Gunung Agung I couldn’t go further without first mentioning the benefit of andisols, otherwise known as volcanic soils which are created from lava weathering and volcanic ash. Volcanoes are natures own industrial scale fertiliser factory, producing beneficial gardening materials such as perlite and pumice as well as a whole host of other nutrients which are contained within the lava and ash. The recent eruption of Agung brings with it the obvious dangers and inconveniences, and could even harm agriculture. One need only take a trip to the eastern side of the mountain north of Tulamben to see the moonscape left in the wake of the 1963-64 eruption. Huge ‘car-sized’ boulders (sometimes larger) can occasionally be seen lining the road that winds along the coast. I can only assume that they were hurled kilometres forth from the imposing Gunung Agung, that dominates the entire eastern landscape. Nothing compares to the power of nature - I am in awe. Despite the dangers, the entire Indonesian archipelago is a direct result of tectonic processes and volcanic activity, so you can’t have one without the other - take the bad with the good. But is it really that bad anyway? The materials deposited from volcanic eruptions are in large part responsible for the surrounding fertile lands that produce the diverse forests, whilst also supporting local agriculture. Over the long-term volcanic ash and weathered lava rock produces the world’s most fertile soils primarily due to the release of minerals such as sulphur, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium. Over time, chemical and physical weathering allows the lava rock and ash to release nutrients and expand its surface area, enabling soils to hold both more water and nutrients whilst also increasing porosity at the same time. These are things that plants love. It may be hard to convince the locals right now, but this eruption could be a blessing in disguise, so long as farmlands aren’t buried by lava-flows. Volcanic soils are typically highly porous and moisture retentive - there’s a very good reason why perlite (also known as volcanic glass) is used in seed raising and potting mix! Volcanic ash is a great addition to your garden in more ways than one and I know of people already planning to go up there and collect it by the truckload when things calm down. Volcanic eruptions are central to the natural processes that produce Indonesia’s fertile soils - so if I am the garden doctor, then Agung must be the Garden God! But if you can’t get your hands on bucket loads of volcanic ash you can just as easily enhance your soil by incorporating wood ash and charcoal, but definitely not charcoal from BBQ briquettes.
C/Ho/I-27 Sept 17
There are many reasons to add charcoal to your garden, including raising the soil pH, improving porosity and increasing water and nutrient retention. Charcoal is a highly absorbent form of carbon. It does not decompose in the soil and will absorb nutrients and hold them, rather than letting them wash away with the rain (that’s why orchids are grown on it). Once added to the soil, the benefits of charcoal continue on for years, producing colourful flowers, lush vegetation and nutrient dense fruits and vegetables.
or work in sections. A soil amended with biochar will retain a higher level of moisture and nutrients than previously. The charcoal essentially locks up the nutrients, preventing them being washed away with rain or watering, but rendering them their bio-available to the plants at the same time.
Many ancient cultures have used wood ash and charcoal as part of their agricultural practices to amend and improve the soil. The ancient Amazonians created a thick fertile soil in places of settlement that have been extensively studied and come to be known as ‘Terra Preta’ literally - dark soil.
In fact, the name derives from early Dutch ‘potasschen’ literally meaning ‘pot ashes’. This refers to wood ashes soaked in a pot of water (the preferred means of production prior to the industrial era of mining and manufacture). The word was later adopted into English as potash from which the word potassium is similarly derived. With plants just as in humans, potassium regulates fluid retention and has a role in transporting food within the plant regulating sugars, starches and hormones - particularly good to use around flowering plants, fruits and vegetables.
Wood ash can also be a good addition to the garden if used in moderation. It consists of about 10% potassium or potash which is a vital nutrient for plants and crops.
Ash has a high of calcium content, sometimes as much as 45%. This high calcium content will raise the pH of the soil, and can be used on acidic soils in place of lime. However home-made ash isn’t a homogenous product, meaning its content will vary. Hardwoods, for example, generally produce more ash and contain more nutrients than softwood. Wood ash obviously isn’t an ideal addition if your soil already has a high pH. There’s also no point in spreading it around acidloving plants such as rhododendrons, roses, azaleas or strawberries, but you can sprinkle it lightly over the lawn. Scientists studying the remnants of these ancient settlements have found the charcoal amended soil much more fertile than the surrounding forest soils still to this day - despite that the settlements haven’t been inhabited for hundreds of years. The indigenous people of northern Australia also used fire to burn grasslands, allowing the combusted material to absorb into the soil. The resulting lush new growth had the effect of attracting game such as kangaroos for hunting. Importantly one of the best ways to deliver phosphorous back into the soil in absence of animal manure is through wood ash. These days the common term is biochar. The idea is simple – incorporate charcoal into the soil where it will absorb and retain nutrients leading to more productive crops and gardens. There are many techniques to make your own biochar at home, some involving steel barrels and 24hr slow burns. I know you’d prefer the easier way. Just burn some logs, you may as well have a BBQ at the same time. Once the logs have burnt down into smokeless coals smother them with water so that the fire is extinguished immediately otherwise they will further reduce to ash. Whilst ash can be used in the garden and has its place we are after charcoal here. Spread the charcoal over your soil, and then work it in completely, add it to the compost too. You can do it all at once
Wood ash is best used as a light layer sprinkled sparingly over the soil or compost heap. If you have a lot, don’t add it all at once as the alkalinity could have a disastrous effect on plants - it could easily all end in tears. It is also caustic and will affect the beneficial bacteria and worms if overdone. It’s better to store the ash and sprinkle it on as a thin layer occasionally, incorporating it into the soil at the same time to prevent it blowing away in the wind. Now get out there and fire up the garden!

29 Bali’s Female Tattoo Artists Make their Mark on a Male-dominated Industry by Anita
From film and politics to everyday life, the theatrics of gender inequality can be seen played out right before our eyes on a daily basis. The tattoo industry is no exception. On an island such as Bali, where streets are dotted with tattoo studios, a surprisingly — or perhaps not so surprisingly — small number of female tattoo artists are offering their time and talent to inkenthusiasts. Bali Advertiser spoke to four tattoo artists who are making a permanent mark on the island.
Viona Mallory Viona Mallory says that tattoo machines make her uncomfortable. This is the reason she has chosen to combine her love for tattoos with hand poking, a non-mechanical tattooing tradition where the ink is poked into the skin using a stick and a needle. “I have no feeling for tattoo machines. Also, the buzzing sound they make is horrible. I love the back-to-basics, more rhythmic, feel of hand poking,” she says. Originally from Blitar in East Java, Viona moved to Bali three years ago to open a clothing business, but was sidetracked — or rather put on the right path - by her partner, who is also a tattoo artist. “I have learnt everything I know from my partner. In fact, one of the first hand poking tattoos I did was some dot work just below his eye. He really must have trusted me,” she says, laughing. Currently working at Altar Tattoo Bali in Canggu, where she started around a year ago, Viona’s favorite style is dot work, especially ornaments, patterns and mandalas. She also often incorporates traditional Balinese imagery in her designs. Viona’s talent has recently been recognized at the Bali Tattoo Expo 2017, where she was named one of the top ten artists of the day.
Caecilia Lyra Chrysantia Also honing her craft at Altar Tattoo Bali, Caecilia Lyra Chrysantia says that Bali is always on the back of her head, pointing to a tattoo of a Bali-inspired mandala on her lower scalp — a hand poked piece done by her colleague Viona. This is one of the four tattoos that Caecilia got since moving to Bali from Tangerang, just outside Jakarta, two years ago. Today, she specializes in black and gray designs, and is more than content with her chosen profession. “Many people still think that tattoos are too masculine for girls,” Caecilia says, pointing to a tattoo of a chrysanthemum on her arm. “I couldn’t disagree more. Tattoos are symbolic. This one for example is based on my name Chrysantia, and it holds a lot of meaning.” Caecilia has always been fond of drawing — in fact, she says, she used to do little else before becoming a tattoo artist. It took the encouragement of her uncle, who invited her to Bali, to embark on her new career. “I used to be an introvert. I would always sit at home and draw,” she says. “My uncle connected me with Ezy, the owner of Altar, and he saw potential in my drawings. He has been teaching me every since.” Working at the studio has given Caecilia an opportunity to work on a wide variety of designs. Some of her more memorable pieces include the legendary leader of the Majapahit kingdom, Gajah Mada, and a 30-centimeter tattoo of a crow on the chest of her Altar colleague Viona. “It’s way more exciting to create images on people than paper,” Caecilia says. “I love people’s reactions when they first see my tattoos on their skin. It makes me happy when they love my work.”

Tarita Aurora Tarita Aurora, who makes guest appearances at Artful Ink Bali in Seminyak, when she is not travelling the world, says her start in the industry was anything but orthodox. “My first apprenticeship was at a private studio in Sydney, where I was living at the time, with a man who approached me at a shopping center. His face was covered in tattoos. Everything about it seemed dodgy, but I said yes anyway,” she says. “He taught me how to ink on fruit, and after only three weeks, he gave me my first job: retouching the old work on his forehead.” Tarita, who grew up between Jakarta and Sydney, and has been tattooing for 12 years, moved to Bali in 2013 after a year of backpacking and a five-year stint in Jakarta. While she describes her tattooing style as psychedelic, surreal black-work with a touch of southeast Nusantara patterns, she is also quick to point out that Bali continually inspires her designs. “I love the temple designs, intricate wood carvings, the organic spirals, and, most of all, the intention behind the sacred patterns.” While Tarita’s signature designs include fairies and mandalas, she says that her most memorable tattooing experiences take place when a tattoo session turns into a transformative ritual, and the client undergoes an emotional state of release. “It can be very heavy, but cleansing. This is when I assume a slightly different role, and I start using clearing incenses such as copal, frankincense and palo santo,” she says. “I am always honored and humbled to be able to assist in my clients’ transformation.”

Lidya Adventa Lidya Adventa, the owner and tattoo artist at Be No Square in Kerobokan, says that she has seen a gradual shift in Indonesia’s tattoo culture, even though female artists still represent only a fraction of the male-centered industry. “People now mark their skin with memories and hope, or as an adornment. A tattoo is no longer considered a prison stamp,” she says, pointing to a striking tattoo of Aeon Flux, the leather-clad animation character, on her left arm. “I love the Aeon story, and its dystopian rebellion. She is my childhood hero.” Lidya’s interest in tattooing was sparked when she interviewed a tattoo artist as a part of her industrial design degree at a university in Bandung. She moved to Bali in 2011 to pursue a career in graphic design, but eventually decided that tattooing was her true passion. Today, she specializes in dot and line work, and refers to her style as “conceptual and light.” She particularly enjoys transforming her clients’ abstract designs into aesthetic form. “Tattooing is very expressive, particularly if you have a personal style and are not just doing it for the money,” she says. “If people can feel that you love what you do, they will trust you and give you more aesthetical freedom.” Lidya opened Be No Square earlier this year, specifically with female clientele in mind. The studio is only open for bookings, with no walk-ins. “It has been created to give female clients a more private and comfortable tattoo experience,” she says. “I am optimistic that more women will get into tattoos as the social perspective towards the tattoo culture gradually shifts from taboo to dedication and style.”

31 The Frugal Balinist ✱ Techie corner. Free basic home user versions of complete security suites: Sophos, Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, ZoneAlarm. *A cellphone’s clock doesn’t gain or lose a second in over 300 million years of operation. *For Indonesian consumers, the price of 4 pirated DVDs equals the cost of a monthly subscription (Rp. 40,000) that gives access to 20,000 movies on the SVod site iflix. *Transvision (http://www.transvision.co.id), with paket ranging from Rp. 199,000-Rp. 399,000 per month, is cheaper and offers free HD and as many channels as its competitors, has no surcharge and no Fox news. *Free video calls from smartphones using WhatsApp. ✱ Credit card fraud. ✱ Good news for Americans retirees. The U.S. Social Security Administration now makes International Direct Deposits (IDD) of benefits into Indonesian banks. Employees of banks often do not know the regulations or if their bank can accept SS direct deposits. They also may be afraid to ask their supervisors. Banks already receiving SS direct deposits: Maybank, Bank CIMB, Mandiri. SS has a different agreement with HSBC, so if you intend to use them it may take longer to process. First request fillable Form SSA1199-OP36 (08-2014) via email or fax from the regional Claims Examiner Ivee Dianne P. Gomez, Social Security Administration, U.S. Embassy, Manila, Philippines, tel. 63 2 301 2669, fax. 63-2-7089714, email: FBU.Manila@ssa.gov, www.ssa.gov/manila.usembassy. gov. Also, send the completed form to Ivee Gomez. Note that it’s already the cutoff date for changes, so any updates done on your record will not take effect until January 2018.
✱ Foodwise. Make rice healthier and go further by mixing it with sweet potato (ubi) or corn (jagung). Take beras jagung (Rp. 12,000/kg), soak it all night, wash it and cook it at a one to one ratio with regular rice or just cook the beras jagung alone just like rice (great for diabetics). *Double the sell by date on processed food; it’s just an arbitrary date. *The Indonesian equivalent of thick freezer storage bags sell for Rp4,500; ask for plastik es batu. *Buffet-style Warung Ijo near Nomad has the cheapest eats in Ubud center; go with a group so you can share dishes. *Warung Surya, Jl. Mahendradatta Selatan 32, Denpasar, tel. 0361-846-6766), the restaurant with the new Avanzas and Astras parked out front, serves very reasonably-priced buffet-style Javanese and Balinese cuisine costing Rp. 15,000-Rp. 20,000 for an average meal. ✱ Health is Wealth. Indonesian Breastfeeding Mothers Association (AIMI or Asosiasi Ibu Menyusui Indonesia) is a mother-to-mother support group with hundreds of certified counsellors who disseminate information through a mailing list, twitter account and Facebook page. *Harnal OCAS 0.4 mg (famsulosin hydrochloride), available in Bali, are an effective remedy for excessive nocturnal urination. Tell your pusekemas that you’ve run out of your prostrate medicine and they should refer you to a urologist who’ll prescribe you Harnal for free (otherwise it costs Rp18,000/tablet). *Stress can be reduced by exercise, yoga, mediation and eating a healthy low carb diet. *The dengue fever season is upon us again; carry out routine fogging and destroy standing water reservoirs that form mosquito nesting areas.

✱ Rock bottom markets. It’s mind-boggling how much in-season fruit and vegetables you can buy for a mere Rp75,000 at Dauh Palah market in Tabanan after 2 pm when the loaded pickup trucks starting arriving from near and far. Also how rock bottom a huge range of freshly caught fish, oysters, crabs, prawns, lobsters and other seafood costs at bustling Pasar Ikan Kedonganan fish market that opens at the break of dawn. Everybody goes to Jimbaran fish market, thinking it’s the cheapest, but in reality Kedonganan is far cheaper if you go early in the morning. In fact, it is often referred to inaccurately as Jimbaran Fish Market because of its close proximity. Sample prices: Spanish mackerel (tenggiri) Rp. 15,000-Rp. 20,000/kg; Milkfish (Bandeng) Rp. 12,000-Rp. 15,000/ kg; Sardines (Tembang) Rp.10,000/kg; Mackeral (Kembung) Rp. 10,000/kg; Tuna (Tongkol) Rp. 15,000/kg; Pomfret (Bawal) Rp. 20,000/kg.
✱ Heads up. Expect more frequent roadblocks over the coming weeks leading up to year’s end as traffic police try to fill their total yearly quotas of citations. Code named razia zebra (Operation Zebra), this campaign targets drivers without driver’s licenses, bike registration or helmets. *On ferries to and from Java get a massage (Rp50,000) that can last the whole passage. *If you think bad weather or an eruption is going to interrupt your itinerary, take the earliest flight on your travel day as your aircraft is already at the airport; delays tend to increase as the day progresses. *Alleviate the stress of cancellations and flight delays by using your Netflix membership to binge-watch favorite shows on your laptop in the airport lounge. *baliairportexperience.com is the one-stop travel resource for visitors to Bali’s airport. ✱ Household tips. The overwhelming number of crimes against expats are household robberies perpetrated by disgruntled ex-household staff members. *Subsidized 3-kg LPG canisters (Rp20,000 each) can be converted to operate water pumps more cost-efficiently than gasoline. *A 100-cm deep Biopori recharge hole absorbs 3 liters of water per minute or 180 liters per hour; filling the hole with biodegradable waste feeds micro-organisms in the soil. *Super Lem G (Rp8,000/) is stronger and adheres 3 times faster than regular wood glue. *Storage rooms built with cinder blocks (batako) and slab roofs (atap cor) make superior storage spaces than those with tile (genteng) roofs. Slab roofs don’t leak due to wind and rain, block mice and other pests from entering, the space is cooler and drier and the roof can be used as a terrace to dry laundry or relax and sunbathe. 32 Purnawan Budisetia: Founder and Director of YPK Bali Purnawan Budisetia is an award-winning leader and innovator of charitable causes in Bali and has worked in social services for 27 years. Born in Jakarta and growing up in Semarang, he moved to Salatiga, Central Java in 1986 to attend college. After graduating with an Agronomist Bachelor degree from Satya Wacana University, he taught horticulture in Bandungan, Central Java for an educational organization. He moved to Bali in 1990. From 2005 to 2007, he worked for the IDEP Foundation as coordinator in their permaculture program. In 2001, Pak Purnawan together with the late doctor Jonathan Mulia, founded Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan, a non-profit whose main goal is the rehabilitation and support of people with disabilities. What inspired you to establish YPK Bali? YPK was set up in response to the crying need to rehabilitate poor people by providing affordable, caring and professional services. Since its inception, YPK Bali has helped 21,968 patients through a number of multidisciplinary therapy programs. I became director of the group in 2007. Do the national and provincial governments give YPK financial or material support? Help from the Bali government is limited. They have their own disability programs, mostly by giving direct cash assistance. However, the government supports disabled programs of institutions and NGOs by providing assistance with registration, legal documents and administration through various government bureaus. Do you offer phyiscal therapy? In 2001, we opened the rehabilitation centre which provides individualized rehabilitation for people with disabilities to effectively increase their movement, function and strength. Our various therapies optimise their ability to undertake daily activities independently. The treatments incorporate physiotherapy, occupational therapy, gym exercise and music therapy. We also teach daily living skills like cooking and gardening. Since 2001, YPK has assisted 1,092 people with integrated rehabilitation treatment. Where do you get YPK staff? Our staff are full time and salaried. We do have a few experienced volunteers from Australia, Holland and Germany who work pro bono training our staff in particular areas, i.e. physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and fundraising. Where do your find therapists? In the beginning, from 2001 to 2005, we recruited all our therapists from Java. Currently, all our therapist are from Bali. We first advertise job vacancies and then interview those who meet our criteria. We’re looking for people who not only have the requisite skill but also the heart to make emphetic social workers. Working for YPK requires sincerity and patience. Do you have any programs designed specifically for children? In 2009, we started an education program for children and young adults with disabilities who have limited access to schools. We give them tailored life skills training and job training to develop their potential for a better future. The program integrates therapeutic approaches that develop the students’ physical and emotional skills. Children are able to read books and access the internet. Teenagers can increase vocational skills like food packaging, baking and crafts. So far a total of 141 disabled children from the Denpasar and Tabanan regencies have joined the program and 77 are still active in the program.
2010, our modified vehicles outfitted with rehabilitation equipment visit different villages each day. Not only do each unit’s physiotherapists provide treatment to people needing care, but they also educate and promote community awareness of disabilities and how to provide care at home. This includes instruction on post-stroke nutrition, how to increase nutritional intake for malnutritioned children by eating locally grown food, home exercise regimens and how to make homes disability friendly. As of September 2017, our mobile services have served 38 different locations and have assisted a total of 2,039 people.

Poor children, youth and adults are thus provided with increased access to basic rehabilitation and education services. Does YPK also help the elderly and the homeless? YPK’s latest plan is a residential care facility meant to provide accommodation and 24-hour-care to at least 20 homeless people with disabilities. Some of the elderly we found could not be appropriately cared for by their families. The facility will provide food and shelter for both adults and children and offer the necessary medical, nursing care and rehabilitation. If possible, homeless children will receive life skills training and classes in math, language and science. This long-awaited facility is a major financial investment for YPK and requires significant donor support. Fundraising events, sponsorship campaigns and international funding are required on an ongoing basis. The project was kickstarteded last year thanks to a generous donation of a 25-year-lease of land to build the facility. The building design was contributed free by local volunteer architecture firms.
C/BT/I-15 Feb 17
When will the residential care facility be ready? It has become a lengthy process, but we hope that the two story residential care building will open in early 2020. We have plans to operate it as YPK’s social center, which will include a homestay for elderly who will be able to socially interact with patients and other residents. Elderly foreigners with KITAS and KITAP visas are welcome to help several days a week. We hope this enterprise will be able to support various other YPK programs.

Which program is particularly close to your heart? One of my favorites is BaliRungu, a hearing impairment program begun in 2012 that focuses on the prevention and treatment of hearing disabilities. We provide hearing assessments, access to ENT specialists and distribute subsidized hearing aids to help people with hearing impairment. Volunteer doctors also inspect and clean the ears of children. The program also aims to increases public awareness on the prevention of hearing loss. From 2012 to September 2017, BaliRungu has assisted 19,477 people in schools, villages and orphanages. Do you serve people who live in the island’s remote areas? Our experienced teams regularly visit remote areas to treat those who cannot make it to our centre in Denpasar. Since

This is from an old family recipe that my friend Victoria shared with me. Fast and easy to make, I’ve baked it with a variety of fruits and it always exceeds my expectations. Just writing the recipe here makes my stomach growl in anticipation of succulent baked fruit popping up through the crunchy topping.
Victoria’s Fantastic Crispy Fruit Cobbler Ingredients: - 1 cup flour - 2 tsp. baking powder - 1/4 tsp. salt - 3/4 cup sugar - 1 tsp. cinnamon - 3/4 cup milk - 1/2 cup butter - 4 cups fruit cubed (mango, apple, rhubarb - whatever turns you on!) - Optional: heavy cream or vanilla ice cream
Serves 6 to 8
Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar and cinnamon. Set aside. Put the butter into a 20cm x 25cm x 5 cm baking pan and slide into the oven. While the butter is melting, add the milk to the dry ingredients and stir just until mixed. Don’t over mix. When the butter is bubbling and the pan is hot, take out of the oven and pour the batter into the hot pan. The butter will rise around the edges. Put the fruit on top and immediately put back into the oven. Bake about 40 minutes or until the top is brown and crisp. This is best eaten warm. Serve by itself or with heavy cream drizzled over individual portions or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Optional: You can add palm sugar, nutmeg, vanilla, berries, peaches, or strawberries - let your imagination run rampant!

Reef is an amazing seafood restaurant. It is located at the beach, in front of the Maya Sanur. Their French F&B Manager, Emmanuel Baroiller is a perfectionist and goes to great lengths to produce quality product at very reasonable prices. For a 5 star hotel their prices are more those of a good restaurant and are still cheaper than most top Bali restaurants. The Salmon Steak [pictured] is as close to perfect as you can get. The salmon is imported from Tasmania, every day, it arrives FRESH, chilled not frozen. The accompaniments here always complement the fish never overpower it [at another hotel restaurant I was recently served Tuna with sambal matah, it may as well have been cardboard as you could not taste the fish]. Prior to this perfect Salmon dish I had also been very impressed with two earlier ones. The Thai Squid Salad achieved that so difficult result of not being tough and rubbery but still retaining a slight crunch, it was so good. The Thai name was not in vain either, the real taste of Thai. Another Thai dish that they have on their menu is the unique Banana Flower Salad, rarely seen in Bali restaurants, excellent. Following the Squid was a Spanish style Garlic Prawn dish so different to the many such servings I have had at Spanish restaurants around the world [more often than not mini prawns served in a bowl of hot garlic oil]. Large jumbo prawns pan fried in white wine, salsa picada and a touch of chilli, garlic bread on the side. For my money Reef is the best Seafood restaurant in Bali, quality and value.
CasCades @ The Viceroy resume their guest chef dinners with Michelin rated Belgian chef Piet Huysentruyt of restaurant Likoké, who joins with CasCade’s Belgian exec chef Nic Vanderbeeken to present a special 8 course dinner, Sunday December 10. The cost is Rp. 1,200,000++ [food only] or an extra Rp. 950,000++ for wine pairing. It is in fact one step in a traveling tour by the complete kitchen staff of Likoké [to 5 countries], in the style of Noma. Prior reservation is essential [972.111].
BC Steakhouse. Jln. Raya Petitenget, evolved from the Butchers Club that had been operating on these premises for the previous year and it is a high temple for the beef-lover! By now everyone knows about their dry-aged beef, used for their steaks and in their incredible hamburgers. Now they are adding organic grain fed beef from Australia. It is all NASAA certified organic and USDA organic as well as the cattle having been slaughtered according to Halal rules. On the menu will be two cuts; Grass Fed Rib-Eye [300gm] and a Grass Fed Tenderloin [200gm]. Just to break away from a mainly beef menu a Lamb Shank is also about to be added.
Xiao Chu is Chinese for ‘little kitchen’. That is what the restaurant of that name has on the southern stretch of Sunset Road, Kerobokan [next door to Istanbul]. Small clean and open for all to see, In fact the restaurant itself is also small, just a few tables in simple aircon comfort with another couple for the smokers on the street-front terrace. The Chinese menu is basic, tasty and VERY cheap with the majority if the dishes priced around the Rp 30,000 mark. Congee for breakfast? You have a choice of chicken, pork, fish or Century Egg. The soups are Szechuan, Hot & Sour Chilli or Preserved Vegetables with Sliced Pork. Simple snacks; Fu Yung Hai [Chinese omelette], Fried Egg with chilli sauce or Prawn Spring Rolls. Noodles can be Kwetiau with chicken, pork or prawns. The healthy vegetarian delight is Stir-fried Kale in oyster sauce. Mains include Steamed Scallop with ginger and spring onion, Chicken in lemon and Crispy Roast Pork. Great value, when you can get 3 dishes for only Rp.100.000. May’s Urban Thai on Jl. Petitenget is a franchise from the well known restaurant of that name in Pattaya, Thalland. The use of English names for the dishes rather than the original Thai always suggests a menu designed for non-Thais. So the Tod Man Pla is Fish Cakes, etc. Most of the standard traditional dishes are here just missing the more Thai specials such as Kra Pao, Larbs, etc. The two main soups are so well universally known that they retain their real names, Tom Yum Goong [hot and sour prawn] and Tom Kha Gai [chicken and lemongrass in coconut milk]. Chicken in Pandan, Pomelo, Papaya and Green Mango salads and Thai Spring Rolls are all here. The mains include many seafood dishes although the yellow, gold and southern names for the curries are confusing. The Massaman curry, from Thailand’s south, is beef although the mains mostly look Thai style rather than Thai traditional…nothing wrong with that as long as it tastes good. Adding a good Duck Red Curry would not go amiss. Pizza Bagus is on the move. Roberto brought traditional Italian Pizzas to Ubud more than 20 years ago. Many have copied since. Initially just as keyhole operations, once in the now defunct Padang Tegal car park, more recently as a full restaurant and Deli on Jln. Pengosekan. Now the final move to location No. 4, a purpose built site, modern restaurant, with full parking, 400 metres south of the present location, just before the Nuh Kuning turnoff but still on Jln Pengosekan, a location that once housed my then favourite breakfast spot, Panilli Vanilla, for their wonderful savoury French crepes from Brittany.

Local News Bali volcano alert raised to highest level About 100,000 people near Bali’s Mount Agung have been ordered to evacuate as officials fear a major eruption. Indonesian authorities have raised the state of alert to its highest level, and expanded the exclusion zone around the rumbling volcano. The island’s airport has now closed, leaving thousands stranded in the tourist hotspot. Authorities say dark gas and ash have been billowing up to 3,400m (11,150ft) above the mountain’s summit. Officials have warned residents to stay away from rock and debris flows known as lahars, which have been spotted flowing down from the mountain. The National Board for Disaster Management raised the alert to level four from 06:00 local time (22:00 GMT Sunday) because of “the possibility and imminent risk of disaster”. The volcano was seen emitting “continuous ash puffs” occasionally accompanied by “explosive eruptions” and “weak booms” that could be heard 12km (7 miles) away from the summit. “The rays of fire are increasingly observed at night. This indicates the potential for a larger eruption is imminent,” it said in a statement (in Indonesian) on its Facebook page. Geologist Mark Tingay of the University of Adelaide told the BBC that Mount Agung now appears to be entering the next phase with a magmatic eruption, where the glow of lava is visible from the crater. But he added that as eruptions are difficult to predict, it was “very hard to tell” how the situation would develop. “These eruptions can be quite large and extensive and violent, but this could also be a relatively minor eruption over time.” He added that Indonesian authorities had made preparations for an eruption for months, and said they appeared “extremely well prepared”, with the situation “well under control”. The main tourist stretch of Kuta and Seminyak is about 70km (43 miles) from the volcano, far beyond the exclusion zone. But the ash prompted officials to shut down Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport from Monday to Tuesday morning. Airport authorities said 445 flights had been cancelled, affecting 59,000 travellers, while Indonesia’s national hotel association said that stranded tourists staying at member hotels could stay one night for free. The Australian government and the UK’s Foreign Office have advised travellers to be prepared for cancelled flights, closely monitor local media, and to heed local authorities’ warnings. China advised its citizens to be “cautious” if travelling to Bali. The airport on neighbouring island Lombok reopened on Monday morning after it was shut briefly. Authorities have widened the exclusion zone to a 10km (6 mile) radius from the volcano, and have ordered people in the area to evacuate. On Monday, officials said about 100,000 residents needed to leave, but so far only 40,000 have done so. A spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said that some people within the exclusion zone did not leave because the area was not touched the last time it erupted - more than 50 years ago. The volcano first began belching thick gas last week. Officials have been distributing masks for local residents, as ash rains down in the vicinity. Anna Baranova, who works with non-governmental organisation Kopernik that is helping evacuees, said her group was trying to bring in better masks and possibly goggles. “There’s some effort to distribute information and also solar powered TV units which will broadcast information about the evacuation to the camps, should the electricity go out if there’s an eruption,” she told the BBC. Lahars, also known as “cold lava”, are slurries of rock fragments mixed with water, and have been spotted in fields and rivers near the volcano. Mr Nugroho warned that lahars may increase due to heavy rain and as Mount Agung continues to emit pyroclastic material. He has urged islanders to stay away from lahars, as well as avoid activities near rivers. Authorities first issued warnings of an imminent eruption and raised the alert to the highest level two months ago, after detecting heightened volcanic activity. Following mass evacuations, some islanders returned to their homes in October when the alert level was lowered with a decrease in activity. According to official estimates, the holiday island lost at least $110m (£83m) in tourism and productivity during that major evacuation. The last time Mount Agung erupted, in 1963, more than 1,000 people died. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. It is home to more than 130 active volcanoes. No-one can really say at this stage how things will turn out. The volcano might dampen down or the activity could evolve into a very big eruption. Scientists have a network of seismometers around Agung that allow them to follow its rumblings, which give them clues as to what is going on inside. This will be complemented by gas detectors. Again, this gives the researchers insights into the physical processes in play. On top of that the scientists have access to satellite observations. Already these have detected an increase in sulphur dioxide emissions. Radar spacecraft in particular are taking a close look at Agung. They can sense any subtle changes in the shape of the volcano that might indicate a very large volume of magma is moving closer to the surface. It is complex work but the experts in this field are relatively convinced that a slow uplift on the northern flank has been going on for some time. It may come to nothing, but high-resolution radar data is now being studied to see if more pronounced changes are occurring. [BBC News November 27, 2017] Kiwi gang member kicked out of Bali, Australia and deported back to NZ A heavily-tattooed bikie enforcer has been kicked out of Bali and Australia and deported back to New Zealand after his connections to an outlaw motorcycle club became known. Jesse Johnston, who has been living on the NSW Central Coast until recently, was allegedly visiting Indonesia on a gang holiday before he was refused entry into the country, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. After being sent back to Sydney he reportedly got off his flight only to be met by more authorities who were aware of his bikie links, according to the Daily Mail. Despite claiming he wasn’t a member of the notorious Finks group authorities found evidence to the contrary, including clothing that sported the iconic “rat” emblem sported by loyal followers. According to SMH, Johnston is already a sergeant-at-arms of the gang’s Newcastle chapter. His Facebook account, which is under the name “Alphonse Fink”, shares photographs of the 22-year-old wearing Finks-labelled clothing and surrounded by club members. A spokesperson from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection could not give Daily Mail Australia the precise reasoning behind his exile, but did release a statement in relation to the government’s policy on bikie gangs. “The government remains committed to protecting the Australian community from those involved with outlaw motorcycle gangs.” it read. “General visa cancellation provisions under the Migration Act 1958 allow for visa cancellation on a number of grounds including non-compliance with visa conditions, or where the presence of the visa holder in Australia is or may be a risk to the health, safety or good order of the Australian community. “Non-citizens who do not hold a valid visa will be liable for removal from Australia.” Since his deportation, Johnston has posted a photo with the caption “I love all my brothers Fink pride worldwide.” [New Zealand Herald November 19, 2017] Four villagers in Karangasem suffer attack by jungle bees Four local residents of Dukuh Bukit Ngadang in the Regency of Karangasem were rushed to the Public Hospital in Karangasem after being attacked by an angry swarm of Jungle Bees (Nyawan Dinding Ai). Beritabali.com quotes a family member of Ketut Subrata – one of the four attacked by the bees, saying: “The Nyawan Dinding Ai in that location frequently attack local residents. Most attacks happen when people disturb their hives causing the bees to become very aggressive.” The bees, considered to have toxic stings, live in hives in a cave owned by Jero Mangku Gada Sari. In the past, local residents tried unsuccessfully to vanish the bees by burning their hives only to find the insects became more ferocious and bold in launching attacks on villagers. The three women and one man sent to the hospital with a large number of stings were Ni Nyoman Suartini (47), Ni Made Subadri (43), Ni Komang Ngetis (71) and Nengah Jati (42). The latest attack occurred on Saturday, November 11, 2017, when Ni Nyoman Suartini was gathering cassava leaves to feed her pigs in a garden owned by Jero Mangku Gada Sari in Banjar Babakan, Karangasem. While gathering leaves, the woman was attacked by a colony of bees that are twice the size of normal honeybees. Terrified, the woman screamed for help that brought forth her mother-in-law Ni Nyoman Ngetis and a neighbor Ni Made Subardi who tried to come to her assistance. Jungle bees then besieged the two women responding to the call for help, causing all three to flee the scene with swarms of large bees in hot pursuit. Suartini ran to the home of a neighbor, I Nengah Jati, still followed by a swarm of bees that then proceeded to also attack him. The villagers eventually burnt dry leaves to create smoke that caused the angry and persistent bees to leave the man’s home. The four were brought to the Karangasem General Hospital for treatment, three were treated and released. Ni Nyoman Suartini who suffered tens of bee stings to her face, head, hands, and body was, however, warded at the hospital for further treatment. [www.balidiscovery.com November 19, 2017]
Bali customs stops Chinese traveler carrying swiftlet nests, estimated value of IDR45 million A Chinese tourist caught with 2.5 kilograms of swiftlet nests was secured at the international departures terminal of Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport on Wednesday. The nests are considered a delicacy, particularly in China, for their rarity and are made for soup, which is said to be a health booster and aphrodisiac. Identified as CY, the Chinese tourist had five packages of the nests, an estimated value of IDR45 million (US$3,332), reports Bali Post. The nests are under strict regulation under Indonesia’s Trade Ministry, so Customs was not going to let CY slide without any proof of being a registered swallow’s nest exporter. Customs realized there was something suspicious about CY when the traveler’s luggage went through an x-ray scanner. Head of Customs & Excise at Nugrah Rai, Himawan Indarjono encourages people trying to bring such restricted goods out of Indonesia to make sure they have complete licensing documents from the relevant technical agencies. Luckily for the traveler, CY did not get arrested and was allowed to go on-just without his very expensive bird’s nests. “In order to not encounter obstacles when examined, related to this case, we only secured the evidence and allowed the traveler to continue his journey,” Indarjono said. [Coconuts Bali November 24, 2017] Ojek driver in Bali suffers critically bitten tongue when he tries to rape woman passenger A 27-year-old Turkish woman, living as an exchange student in Bali, left a man “speechless” after he presumably tried to rape her in an empty field in Uluwatu, South Bali. As reported by Beritabali.com, the woman, identified only be the initials NB, had hailed on online GRAB ojek motorcycle on Monday. November 13, 2017. Traveling from Sanur to the woman’s boarding house in Jimbaran, South Kuta, the motorcycle driver made a sudden detour to isolated, empty fields near the Movenpick Hotel. Steering his Turkish passenger into the empty field, the motorcycle driver, Edison Lumbanbatu (23), reportedly ignored protests from his female passenger that he was taking the wrong road. In the empty field, he stopped the bike and attempted to embrace the woman. NB refused the approach, causing Edison to brutally strike the woman to the ground, inflicting head and arm wounds in the process. The man then climbed on top of the woman and attempted to kiss her. The woman struggled and fought the man, almost biting the man’s tongue off. While the driver was bleeding profusely and in pain, the woman fled the scene and sought help from local residents who sent the woman to the Kasih Ibu Hospital in Kedonganan for treatment of head and arm injuries. Meanwhile, Edison Lumbantu was rushed to the emergency room at Bali’s Sanglah General Hospital under police guard in an effort to save his tongue said to be left dangling by a shred. Police say they have been unable to interrogate the ojek driver who is unable to talk while doctors work to treat and save his badly injured tongue. [www.balidiscovery.com November 19, 2017] Bali police form special team to hunt ATM thieves after a week of no leads A week has past since an ATM was ripped from a surf outlet in Bali’s Jimbaran area and police are struggling to piece together any leads about whodunnit. To push the investigation forward, police say they are forming a special team dedicated to hunting the team of about five culprits who allegedly loaded up the ATM into the back of a car. “We have created a special team to carry out the search,” Denpasar Police Chief Hadi Purnomo explained on Thursday night, as quoted by Tribun Bali. Purnomo says police are still waiting for lab results after they had set up a crime scene by forensic investigators. As previously reported, a Maybank ATM was targeted at the Surfer’s Paradise outlet on Jl. By Pass Ngurah Rai in the early hours of Nov. 17. A security guard on duty had been beat up and tied up by the perpetrators. Police say there weren’t many people around given the time that it happened and a reading couldn’t be taken of the perpetrator’s license plate. “There haven’t been any clues because it was quiet. In addition, the witnesses couldn’t see the license plate of the perpetrator because it reflected light and created a glare,” Kuta Police Chief Wayan Sumara said on Monday. Sumara said the perpetrator seemed quite sophisticated and efficient with their operation. [Coconuts Bali November 24, 2017]

40 Mange in Bali – Scabies vs Demodex Mangy street dogs – they are everywhere in Bali sadly. Skin disease is one of the most common presentations for dogs brought to Sunset Vet, accounting for nearly 30% of all our caseload. What is most sad is that this skin disease is so easily treated and yet some poor street dogs (and owned dogs for that matter) suffer so needlessly. Furthermore there is a misconception among some locals here in Bali that a dog with skin disease is more likely to have rabies, which is obviously nothing to do with skin disease. There is a huge amount of skin disease amongst Bali’s stray dog population for several reasons. Firstly the climate is favourable to the proliferation of bacteria, fungi and parasites that cause skin problems. Secondly, the large amount of free-roaming dogs helps the transfer of contagious skin disease such as scabies. Thirdly, many of these freeroaming dogs are either strays or have poor or uneducated owners who do not take them to the vet when they start showing symptoms, either due to mistakenly believing that they are a risk to human health, or through worry about the costs. The word ‘mange’ can be used for any skin disease caused by mites. There are many different types of mites and each of them causes a different type of mange. The two types discussed here, Scabies and Demodex, account for 99% of the mange in Bali so these will be discussed in greater detail. It should be noted that not all dogs with skin disease have mange – bacterial and fungal infections are also very common in Bali. Furthermore a dog may have several skin diseases simultaneously, often a case of mange will become open sores due to self excoriation (scratching until the skin bleeds) and these wounds will then get a secondary bacterial infection necessitating a course of antibiotics on top of the mange treatment. SCABIES (Sarcoptic mange) The most widely known is the circular shaped mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows tunnels through the skin causing an intense itchiness. Most of the damage is done by self trauma as any animal with scabies will scratch itself raw leading to bleeding sores. Scabies and ringworm (a fungal disease) are the two canine skin diseases transmissible to humans so if your pet is scratching it is wise to seek quick treatment. Diagnosis is confirmed by seeing the mites microscopically via a ‘skin scrape’ at your local vet clinic, and there are several treatment options: 1. Subcutaneous injection of ivermectin (for severe cases a second shot is needed a week later). 2. Topical spot-on such as Revolution or Advocate, containing an ivermectin-like drug. 3. An oral anti-parasitic drug such as Bravecto (usually a single dose is sufficient to kill all scabies mites). In addition to the above, a medicated shampooing using Sebazole may be helpful or if severe, a course of antibiotics (if the self trauma from scratching has caused a secondary bacterial infection). However some street dogs will not tolerate medical shampooing without sedation if they are not used to being handled. Applying a monthly spot-on such as Revolution or Advocate, or giving an oral medicine such as Bravecto, also provides protection from contracting scabies from the environment. Your dog does not need direct physical contact with another dog suffering from mange, it is supposedly enough to lie down in the same spot where a mangy dog has previously been lying. It should be noted that whilst a subcutaneous injection of ivermectin may be enough to kill the scabies mites on the dog at that moment in time, this drug does not have any protective effect to stop the dog picking up scabies again a week later, unlike Revolution or Bravecto.
DEMODEX (Demodectic mange) The second type of mange widely prevalent in Bali is Demodex, and this one is a little harder to get rid of. Caused by the cigar shaped mites Demodex canis or Demodex cati, these parasites live in and feast on hair follicles, causing the hair to ultimately fall out and the dog to go bald. Eventually chronic scarring can give the skin that thick grey leathery appearance that we sometimes see on stray dogs in Bali. Unlike scabies, demodex is not contagious to other dogs, but is thought to have a hereditary component and is passed from mother to pups during nursing. In fact it is normal for both dogs and even humans to have small numbers of demodex mites living in the hair follicles, and it only becomes a problem if the immune system is weakened and the demodex mites start breeding uncontrollably. Diagnosis is also via skin scrape at your local vets, and once confirmed there are three treatment options: 1. Give liquid ivermectin orally every day for 6-8 weeks. 2. Apply a spot-on treatment (called Advocate) weekly. 3. Give a single dose of Bravecto orally (treatment of choice at Sunset Vet for convenience and efficacy). 4. Amitraz scrubs twice a week until the skin is completely clear.

Whichever option is chosen it is advisable to treat for a further two weeks after a negative skin scrape, to ensure that all of the mites are eradicated. Although demodex is eminently curable, it takes a lot longer to do so than curing scabies. Previously the treatment for demodex was always either daily oral ivermectin liquid for 6 weeks, or weekly amitraz washes. Neither of these were practical for treating stray dogs suffering with terrible demodectic mange, without hospitalising them for the duration of treatment at great expense. Although Bravecto was registered as an ‘anti-tick and flea drug’, it was noticed that a single dose also cured demodex. At Sunset Vet we started using it ‘off-label’ for the treatment of demodex and the results were spectacularly successful. Dogs that were completely bald started to regrow their fur after just a single dose. Dog rescuers could now give a single Bravecto dose to a stray with mange, and watch with pride as the skin disease resolved and hair grew back within weeks. SHOUT OUT TO ALL BALI RESIDENTS Do you have a dog – stray or owned - living in your neighbourhood who is constantly scratching? Do you pass by a dog on the way to work who has hair loss or open sores? What if you could fix that dog by giving it a single tasty dog treat, and then see his/ her beautiful coat grow back over the next few weeks? That is now the case for many cases of mange, all it takes is a single dose of Bravecto (Rp.200k for a 1015kg dog such as most adult Bali Dogs). Consider keeping a dose under your motorbike seat to help a stray in need. Sunset Vet offers veterinary services via their Kuta (24hr) and Ubud (8am-10pm) clinics. For further information or to make an appointment call them on 03619348915 (Kuta) or 0361975296 (Ubud), or visit www.sunsetvetbali.com or www.facebook.com/sunsetvetbali or Instagram: sunset_vet_bali
