Bali’s Hangover Lounges Deliver Miracle Therapy Let’s face it, Bali is a party island. And where there are parties, there are usually hangovers. And, boy, do they hurt. Luckily, there is no reason to despair if you find yourself in pain after a big night out because hangover treatment centers can bring much-needed relief in as little as 30 minutes. Forget a sterile, hospital-like, facility—these spots are designed with comfort in mind (after all, you don’t need to suffer more than you already are). So if you are feeling under the weather after a night of overindulging—or have a more legitimate reason for seeking help such as Bali belly, flu or jetlag—checking into one of the island’s IV treatment centers might just put you back on your feet. Hangovers have three main causes: dehydration, inflammation and oxidative stress (imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants). IV therapy delivers electrolytes and vitamins straight into the bloodstream to provide fast relief. As an IV bypasses the stomach and intestines, the vitamins are absorbed by your body at a much faster rate than if they were taken orally; often patients start feeling better even before the session is over. While IV drips can be used for alleviating hangovers and other conditions, they also have numerous other benefits including boosting immunity, ridding the body of toxins and balancing hormones. With this in mind, here are three of Bali’s IV therapy lounges. The Dose Bali If the best way to avoid a hangover is staying drunk, the second best option might just be IV therapy at the Dose. The treatment center offers a variety of intravenous therapy packages depending on your hangover level and physical condition.

The Dose’s starter package is the Essentials. It contains 1000 milliliters of saline solution and electrolytes, as well as vitamin B and optional painkillers. For those needing a little extra kick, the Deluxe offers additional vitamin C and anti-nausea medication. Those wishing to go all out can opt for the Dose’s

and Platinum. Those with a mild to moderate hangover should do just fine with the Silver Package, which contains a liter of hydration, electrolytes, antioxidants, vitamins B complex and C, as well as a stomach protector and liver cleanser. Booze enthusiasts opting for this package can also choose between a pain killer and an anti-nausea medicine. The Gold Package throws in 30 minutes of oxygen therapy. Formulated for the mother of all hangovers, the Platinum option delivers 1,500 milliliters of hydration plus additional vitamins and 45 minutes of oxygen therapy. The clinic also offers health and well-being packages. Liquid Slim has been formulated to boost the metabolism and cleanse the liver. It also contains L-Carnitine to help turn fatty acids into energy. The Myers Cocktail is a basic vitamin infusion for those who need a little extra energy. The center’s most popular vitamin booster package, Liquid Life hydrates, boosts the immune system, detoxifies the liver, and improves hair and skin health. Last but definitely not least, Liquid Youth promotes skin regeneration, weight loss and overall vitality

Ultimate Package, which is full of vitamins and antioxidants. Some of the center’s other health packages include Food Poisoning Recovery and Dengue Fever Recovery. Those concerned about their appearance can opt for the Anti-Aging Package, a treatment infused with vitamins, antioxidants and a skin firming youth booster. The Dose is a mobile service that delivers IV therapy right to your doorstep. Those on a recovery or wellness regimes will be pleased to know that the Dose offers a 15 percent discount for five or more treatments or groups over five. The Dose Bali - https://www.thedosebali.com/ Hangover Lounge The Hangover Lounge uses pediatric IVs (think the smallest possible gauge needles) to minimize the pain after your wild night on the town. And since not all hangovers are created equal, the treatments at the center are tailored to your individual needs. The center offers three basic hangover packages: Silver, Gold

Hangover Lounge Bali - http://hangoverloungebali.com Amo If you find yourself waking up feeling like you have just been run over by a truck and you are somewhere in the vicinity of Canggu, head for Amo. A café, nail salon, spa and sauna rolled into one, Amo also offers IV drips for those feeling off color— for whatever reason that may be. Administered by trained professionals, the 60-minute therapy session has been formulated to hydrate, combat fatigue, boost immunity, detoxify and leave your skin looking like a million dollars. Some of the ingredients used during the treatment include saline solution, electrolytes, vitamins C, B1, B6 and B12, detoxifying antioxidants and some collagen for good measure. Painkillers and anti-nausea medication can also be added to the drip on request. Bali For Kids

With the coming Giving Season in mind, I’ve put together a list of a few organizations that do good work for kids in Bali, are trustworthy and transparent and are in need of donations and assistance. This list is by no means exhaustive. If you have any suggestions for organizations that I may have left out, please reach out to me on the email at the bottom so I can include at a later date. ****************************************************************

The Bali Kids team offers education for kids on health, hygiene, diet, bullying, sex education, the environment, girls’ health, dental health and more. Bali Kids is located at Jalan Raya Cica Abian Base, Mengwi. Their website has wish lists of items they need and drop-off locations around Bali. You can contact them on 0361 900 6331 or email them at info@balikids.org. Their Facebook page is Yayasan Anak Anak Bali (@YayasanAnakAnakBali). Bali Kids is non-denominational and accepts all Balinese children under 18. ******************************************************************* Yayasan Senyum Bali (Smile Foundation of Bali) (http:// senyumbali.org) is a non-profit that brings health care to children with craniofacial disabilities. These commonly include cleft lip and palate, as well as a variety of other conditions, including facial tumors. Senyum Bali raises funds for surgeries and establishes partnerships with other organisations to provide logistical and medical support. The charity maintains a patient accomodation in Denpasar called Smile House.

Solemen Indonesia

Yayasan Solemen Indonesia (https://www.solemen.org) is an Indonesian non-profit foundation that provides direct support and funding for the good health and well being of disadvantaged and ‘diffabled’ (differently abled) Balinese kids and their families. Solemen’s alleviates the misery of extreme poverty by bringing hope and sustainable solutions to those who don’t have [easy] access to medical treatment. Solemen has a volunteer Outreach Team of doctors, nurses, therapists, nutritionists and social workers that help a caseload of people they call ‘Solebuddies.’ In addition to needing money donations, Soleman also needs food, clothing, mobility & disability aids, ongoing sponsorships and more.

**************************************************************** Bali Kids, or Yayasan Anak Anak Bali, (http://balikids.org) is a non-profit organization that provides health education, medical and dental treatment to 10,000 poor Balinese kids every year. Bali Kids has operated a clinic since 2005 offering free health care for Balinese children in need, as well as a mobile medical service two days a week that travels around Bali on a roster system. Children that require hospital care are given pre and postoperative care at the clinic. Bali Kids arranges hospital appointments and surgery for kids, but has to find outside funding for any surgeries. Short and long-term accommodation is also available at the center.

YKPA also offers relief – food and basic supplies -- in the event of natural disasters. In 2018, their mobile team helped people in Lombok affected by the earthquake and continues to support them. The website has information about how to donate and items that YKPA needs. The YKPA office is located at Jalan Gunung Payung No 23, Denpasar. You can contact them at care4child@ykpa.org, on +62 8133 7411 112 or +62 8786 1515 773. Check out their Facebook page at @YKPADenpasarOrphanage. ******************************************************************

Their main fundraisers are the Smile charity shops in Ubud and Sanur. If you have any goods that you no longer need or want, you can drop off at your local Smile Shop and they will sell it. (You can also volunteer there.) The shops are located at: Jl. Nyuh Kuning, Pengosekan and Jl. Pantai Sindu No. 3, Sanur. The Smile Shop Ubud is open every day from 10 am – 5 pm and the Sanur store is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm. Senyum has maps to both the shops on their website. They also accept cash donation through the website. The main office is locared at Jl. Pulau Aru No. 9 Sanglah, Denpasar. You can call them on 0361 233758 or +62 8133 796 4998 or email them at yayasansenyum@yahoo.co.id. Their Facebook page is Yayasan Senyum Bali (@ yayasansenyumbali.YSB).

Currently, Solemen is carrying out a campaign to plant 1746 Moringa trees to help families generate income from the crop. They are also raising funds to help nine children with heart problems receive the live-saving surgery they need. Their website has wish lists of items they need and dropoff locations around Bali. You can also contact their main office at Jl. Merdeka Raya No. 8x, Kuta, email them at (info@solemen.org) or call them on +62 812 3720 6220. Their Facebook page is Solemen Indonesia (@ IndonesiaSoleMen). Solemen is endorsed by the Bali Government Tourism Office and the Bali Hotels Association.

Yayasan Kasih Peduli Anak (YKPA) (https://ykpa.org.), often known as the Bali Street Kids Project, runs two orphanages in Denpasar and Tabanan and a school for street kids in Kuta. The non-profit gives disadvantaged kids the loving care, education and skills they need to succeed in life.

Yayasan Sari Hati

Yayasan Sari Hati (http://sarihatischool.mystrikingly.com) provides a free school for kids with mental and physical disabilities, ranging from mild to severe, in Ubud. R O TA R Y NEWS

We connect with various NGOs in our area and beyond, providing sponsorship – John Fawcett Foundation, who provide free eye care to the people of Bali especially in remote poor communities. Our sponsorship allows the trained team to visit these villages and provide the care needed in the form of glasses, eye drops, and even on the spot cataract surgery.

Welcome to regular and new readers!

Rotary can start in schools with Interacts – 13-18 years of age, from there we move onto Roteracts – 18-30, and then 30+ full Rotarians. Interacts and Roteracts are affiliated to a Rotary club in their area, who approve and provide the finances required for their projects. They mainly work with children, reading, and art, outdoor activities, setting up libraries in schools, teaching English to school children in a relaxed and happy atmosphere.

Bali Sehat – provides free health care to the remote villages in Karangasem regency, where the people have no access to medical care and no money to pay for it. All areas of health care, from general, specialists, e.g. Ear nose and throat, dental care, female health care, maternal etc. Again our sponsorship, allows Bali Sehat to organise “Healthy Days” in the villages and provide the doctors, medicines, transport, food required for the day.

Funds are always required, without them we can do very little; fund raising comes from our yearly member subscriptions, donations and fund raising. However as there are many organisations all after the elusive $ or IDR, it is not an easy task! Events take much organising, with the venue, raffle prizes to source, businesses to contribute, and then hoping people will attend. Traditionally, Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset, has hosted a fund raiser at Christmas, but as so many organisations also choose this time, we have decided to forgo this year. So this is where again I stress WE NEED YOU!! Community spirited people wishing to join us, take part in projects, suggest ideas for further projects, add to our numbers, helping to provide the extra funds to see smiling happy faces of so many people, with so little yet so appreciative, of what we can do for them. It’s what makes us dedicated – giving back to a people, country that open their arms to us, embrace us in love and friendship!

Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset is a small but very active and friendly club, with members from Indonesia, Australia, and America. BUT WE NEED MORE MEMBERS!! WE NEED YOU!! To be part of a club with friendship, fun, opportunity to serve and give back to the community we live in. the more hands we have the more we can do! Membership is open to males/females, from any part of the globe; our meetings are in English, very relaxed, not full of protocol, membership fees can be tailored to meet your needs e.g. monthly , 3 monthly, 6 monthly or yearly, and we meet just twice a month from 5.30-7pm in 2 different venues in Ubud. PLUS you become a member of a world-wide community of Rotarians! Anywhere you travel in the world you will find a Rotary club, who will welcome you with open arms!

Many visitors to Bali are Rotarians, and through our web site they contact us and attend a meeting. Our guests come from all parts of the world, and in some cases we become “sister clubs”, and can share the costs of projects.

Bali Children’s Projectwho help with sponsorship of children enabling them to attend school, and provide uniforms and all equipment they require. Our sponsorship helps in their work.

ROTARY CLUB BALI UBUD SUNSET WE NEED YOU!!!! Our regular readers will know of the various Rotary clubs in Bali, and of the work we do in the community. But to refresh and inform new readers Rotary is a World Wide Organisation involved in many projects aimed at helping communities in their area/country. Projects include overcoming diseases e.g. Polio; lack of fresh water supplies, sanitation, increasing education not just for children but also for adults, general health care, eye care, pre and post maternity care.

to keep the items and then to be recycled. A “Go Fund Me” account is currently also raising funds for more equipment.

For more information on how you can join us, please go to www.rotraybaliubudsunset.org. Rumah Kampos Taro – a recycling project set up by a member of the community who saw the need to educate children into the collection and recycling of plastics. Initiatives to encourage the children in this scheme have proved valuable. Sponsorship has enabled the purchasing of the coloured bags to place plastics, recycling in, storage

Restaurant & Food

Restaurant Review Tastes of the Archipelago Very Bali is the Seaweed Salad, tossed in roasted coconut, with garlic, red chilli and shrimp paste, on top are mini skewers of tuna and mackerel. Old favourites still on the menu include Balinese Tum Ayam [minced chicken and spices wrapped in banana leaf and steamed], and the best spring rolls in Bali, Lumpia from Semarang, thin crisp rice paper casing around young bamboo shoots, carrots, bean sprouts and shrimp. The dipping sauce traditional fermented soy bean.

chefs, even those from starred Michelin guide restaurants. Dining at Enak is always a pleasant experience, tasty traditional food at very reasonable prices with friendly young knowledgeable staff. Amazingly this is a warung with wine! Their wine list is just as comprehensive, or more so, than what is normally found at most international restaurants. Their famous Rijsttafel is even offered with wine pairing.

Sates, of course! Select from chicken, lamb, fish or tempe, all done in different regional styles. Nasi Campur is often just Back in the 90’s the old original Ketupat, on Jln. Legian, a selection of left-overs, but at Enak it is a featured dish. It Kuta, behind the Jonathon furniture gallery was the stand includes portions of Ayam Betutu, Sate Ikan, Be Sisit, Urab out place for Indonesian cuisine, It was quite a large Sayur, Tempe Mendoan, Telor Balado. Peyek Kacang and restaurant, built around a swimming pool, always busy and Bergedel Jagung. There is also a vegetarian version reservations only due the various peak periods. available, just as tasty!

Warung Enak is a place that should be on everyone’s Ubud visit list, very special.

One of my most surprising discoveries about Bali, many years ago, was its almost total lack of quality Indonesian restaurants. Small Warungs by the thousand, each selling the specialties of their area and restaurants serving an Indonesian version of Chinese food abounded, along with whatever local owners thought western cuisine was supposed to look and taste like. But no high quality good value Indonesian, served in clean premises that a tourist would visit, the food having been prepared in a modern hygienic kitchen!

Soups can be the traditional Soto Ayam, from Madura [turmeric scented broth, shredded chicken, hard boiled egg and rice vermicelli], Hasil Laut [light clear seafood soup with lemongrass, red chilli, galangal and turmeric], Soto Betawi [diced beef in coconut milk, spicy] and Labu, a local creation of pumpkin puree and seeds with feta.

In more recent times Warung Enak, in Pengosekan, Ubud, has been presenting a traditional menu from all across the archipelago. Their attention to detail has been well rewarded with many cooking competition wins [usually against the major 5 star hotels] over the past few years, under the guidance of Chef Rai. With the same management as the fine dining Ubud restaurant Lamak, quality is guaranteed.

Standard mains include Bali’s signature dishes; Betutu [Ayam] and Babi Guling [wrongly translated everywhere as ‘suckling’ pig, it actually means cooked on the spit]. Other chicken options are the ever popular Ayam Madu, grilled half spring chicken marinated with coriander seeds, cumin honey and palm sugar and Ayam Bakar, chicken leg marinated in Balinese spices, served with a spicy sambal of tomato and sweet soy, my sort of dish. The Pork Ribs are also very special here, a 500gm full rack is used, marinated before grilling.

There are many stir fries, all can be done with your choice of Nasi [rice], Mie [egg noodles] or Bihun [rice vermicelli]. To this base can be added Ayam [chicken breast, cabbage, bok choy and carrot], Ikan Teri [anchovies, red chilli, vegetables, egg & chicken skewers], Kambing [imported lamb leg diced combined with wing beans, red chilli], Udang [river prawns, red Now in operation for more almost 15 years they have added chilli, cabbage, bok choy and carrot] or Kepiting [Kalimantan a selection of new dishes to their already comprehensive crab, garlic, shallots, vegetables and a curry seasoning]. menu. At Warug Enak I find that I am always ordering a number New mains include Mie Ayam Jakarta, minced chicken with of pure vegetarian dishes, they are quite outstanding. egg noodles, spiced shallots, sweet soy, sayur hijau, served One dish that I can never visit without ordering is their with a chilli sambal and pickled cucumber. Also a Fish Curry, Asinan Jakarta [pictured]. It is Betawi cuisine, street food Sumatran style, white fish with yellow curry, red chilli, okra from Jakarta. Healthy and tasty it is and according to many and vegetables, with yellow rice. Jakarta friends who I have taken to Enak over the years, way better than any on offer in the big city. It is a mixture of Bebek Goreng is a half bird, crisp fried after being marinated yam bean, carrots, cucumber, bean sprouts and tofu, tossed with coriander seeds, garlic and turmeric, served with the with Carambola vinaigrette and served in a crunchy little Bali special Sambal Matah. Ayam Mangga is a modern bird’s nest of fried egg noodles, simple but fantastic! Not far creation that has been a sensational discovery. A coconut behind it, and also usually ordered, perhaps the most often crusted chicken breast is stuffed with a puree of mango. It ruined local dish, Bergedel Jagung, simple corn cakes. I sits on a base of yellow turmeric sauce. have been served disgusting versions of this dish in so many places, even at a famous Indonesian restaurant in a 5 Eating the Indonesian Rijsttafel at Warung Enak has always star resort. At Enak always perfect, firm but still moist. Whilst been an experience once tried, never forgotten, 19 small the dish does not need it I always order some Sambal Ulek dishes are presented in groups as 4 courses. Update 10th Table has arrived. Lovina’s first luxury up market

restaurant is the biggest surprise, in the north of Bali, you could imagine. Headed by Belgian industry professional Geert Jan de Meyer, it is in good hands indeed. The number of Belgians involved in the quality end of the Bali food scene, for such a small country, is quite amazing! The cuisine is French but adapted to the local produce availability wherever possible. In fact French classics adorn the menu from starters of Foie Gras [chutney and brioche] or Escargot [garlic butter, Pernod and parsley], Soups [French Onion or Lobster Bisque], Salad Nicoise [with Asian touches] to a full Mediterranean s t y l e Bouillabaisse [redolent with saffron and herbs]. Other items on this tempting menu include starters of Marinated Prawn, Smoked and Marinated Salmon [with delicate creams] or a Papaya Salad with shredded chicken. Their unique Burmese Lentil Soup is served with a condiments tray. Other mains can be Meat [Lamb Rack with mushroom espuma, Wagyu Beef with a tamarind reduction or Beef Curry with yellow rice], or Seafood [Dory with an Asian vinaigrette or Barracuda with dill cream, pumpkin and pineapple]. For dessert you can enjoy an oldie; Crème Caramel and fruits, flambeed with Grand Marnier. The restaurant only has 10 tables [hence the name, the 10th one is a small private dining room] so prior reservations are advisable [reservations@the 10thtable.com].

Velvet is hidden away on Jln. Lungsiakan, in Kedewatan, north-west of Ubud. With so many Tex and Cal Mex restaurants all over Bali it is indeed unusual to find a Mexican

in the kitchen as is the case here. Whilst referring to itself as a Seafood Grill restaurant, the food is regional Mexican. Starters can just be a simple Guacamole Dip or Chorizo and Cheese or the more adventurous Antitico [barramundi, veg and tamarind served on a Jicama tortilla] or Aguachile. There is a Tostadita of pressed prawn with green chilli and coriander. Or you can start with the Velvetina, a hot seafood soup. Tramafad are chicken breast fajitas in beetroot cream and a touch [very little] of chilli. Pinche Pollo are chicken drumlets in a sweet and spicy sauce of chocolate and grains. The Baked Barramundi is a house special, whilst the Wilder Chicana combines tenderloin with paprika and prawn skewers. As with Mexican restaurants everywhere there are also Burritos [minced beef, tuna or tofu] and a big range of Tacos. Unlike most Ubud restaurants the action [and kitchen] goes till quite late most nights. Definitely worth a visit.

Flat Stanley, Jln. Taman Ganesha, Petitenget brings Californian style pizzas to Bali. Start with Salumi and Charcuterie, a selection of meats and pickles or a Cheese Board of 4 cheeses, tomato jam and olives, Small plates include Salt-roasted Beets with whipped feta, sorrel and heirloom radish, Grilled Asparagus with shaved parmesan, Charred Broccoli with peanuts and chilli pesto, Grilled Octopus and Meatballs. The main event is their Sourdough Pizzas with a host of different toppings; Peppered Salami, Chorizo & Broccolini, Meatballs, and a healthy Kale & Pumpkin or Roasted Eggplant. Alternative mains can be Salmon or Red Snapper, Pork Chop or a simple Steak abd Fries. Kisik is found on the pier at the front of the Ayana Resort,

Jimbaran. Seafood is the specialty and it is the place for that very special occasion, one that is worthy of the cost of an evening here. Once at Ayana there are two different ways to arrive at Kisik; the easy and the not so easy. The best way is via the resort’s inclinator which takes you down over the cliff to the seafront in comfort. Otherwise you can brave the 141 steps and progress down the cliff face at your own pace. At Kisik they serve the highest quality local and imported seafood, prepared perfectly, as you would expect at such a

location. For the ultimate romantic occasion you can book a table at the pier extremity, sitting just above the ocean waves.

Starter Lab is a bakery, found on Jln. Padang Linjong in Canggu. It has become a go to place for all the lovers of sourdough bread. Perhaps the first Bali operation to make it big in Singapore, now that really is a feat. You may have heard of the famous Tartine Bakery from San Francisco. Well, there’s a new kid on the block definitely worth checking out if you’re a big fan of sourdough. Co-founder Emerson Manibo trained at the famous Per Se restaurant in New York, and Tartine Bakery before venturing into his own bakery business, Starter Lab, back in 2017. Their outlet at Havelock Road, Singapore is their second one! The bakery cafés essentially offer a wholesome menu of posh toast (so much so they have been reviewed to serve the “Gucci Of Bread”), sandwiches and build your own bread boards. All the loaves and pastries served (other than the scones) contain sourdough/starter, and loaves are fermented over 36 hours before being baked. Mascarpone, creme fraiche, ricotta and all pickles are made in-house. Apart from the basic sourdough the Danish Rye is also very popular and worth a visit alone. Guapa Mexican Restaurant is at Jln. Labuansait, Pecatu. It offers much more than just the normal Mex, found elsewhere in Bali. Entrees of Meat Empanadas or Tuna Ceviche are both worth ordering. Sure there are Tostadas, Burritos, Quesadillas, and Enchilladas, however their Tacos come with vegetarian options [spicy mushroom, cauliflower or roasted pumpkin]. They even offer Mexican Burgers as well as a range of large plates to share for a group [Oacaka spice whole fish, Butterflied grilled chicken or a large Ribeye steak served with smoked mash]. The Churros are also excellent, served with a caramel and a chocolate sauce. So much better than any other churro I’ve ever had. By Gerry Williams

The Frugal Balinist * Money changing basics Money exchange in Indonesia is no commission - the rate you see on the signboard is the rate you get. Only use reliable authorized money changers such as www.balibestrate.com, www.centralkutabali.com or BMC. These have teller windows where you can count/check your money safely. Don’t use a bank, hotel or a “man in a shed” to change money. Anybody can put up a sign saying “Authorized” Money Changer.

difficult to spend less than US$50/day. This is why destinations like Nepal, Laos or Indonesia are better suited for budget travelers. *Getting to and from a destination is the single biggest cost of any trip. Google Flights is a handy app that can save hundreds of bucks. Though not a booking site, the tool gives you a range of options, including a way to see the very cheapest destinations from your closest airport and a calendar that indicates when it’s cheaper to fly between airports you select. *Certain seasons are far more expensive than others: Bali or Europe in August, when many Europeans take their vacations, is going to be a lot more expensive than in the Spring or Fall. The peak busy seasons for the destinations that you have in mind is easy to research. Go instead in the shoulder season right before or right after the busy season. The weather will be largely similar to that of the peak season. Thailand in April to June and in September to October, for example, is just as warm and beach-worthy, yet way less crowded and expensive than in Thailand’s peak season November to March.

* Cheap, cheap, cheap! Prices on Tokopedia, Indonesia’s most visited local e-commerce site, are unbeatable. This online shopping site buys goods from different sellers but the money stays with Tokopedia and is only transferred to the seller when you confirm you’ve received the item and all is OK. Use the button in the right hand corner for the English translation, although it may fail to translate some essential words. An online tracking number is available when the order is shipped. You can see when the item leaves the seller, arrives at the Jakarta gateway, arrives at the Bali gateway and finally when it’s delivered to your location in Bali. It’s not unusual for an order to sit unconfirmed on the site for 24 hours, even after you’ve already paid. It may take as long as 30 hours for your order to be confirmed, well below the eBay standard. If your order never arrives, your money will be returned to my account.

*Money changers at Ngurah Rai Airport now offer competitive rates and even accept old bills and small denomination bills (but not coins). *Always be the last person to touch and count the money. Count, count and count again. A favorite con trick is to give you just Rp50,000 notes instead of Rp100,000 notes because there are a lot more bills you have to check. They then engage you in conversation whilst they touch/count the money again after you. *Each time you travel abroad from your home country, have your bank unblock your debit/credit card and tell them where you will be going. It can be a real inconvenience to get your card unblocked again. *Take cash and exchange it there or take a prepaid Visa card that you can reload through online banking. New large bills fetch a higher rate than smaller bills. * Budget travel The best known places in a county are the most expensive. Tokyo, Singapore, Oslo, London and Paris are famous for how brutally expensive they are and where it would be very

Boreh refreshes the skin when you’re hot or warms you up after you’ve been out in the rain. Boreh consists of a spicy concoction of coconut oil, flowers, aromatic roots, nutmeg (biji pala), kunyit (turmeric), cekuh (kaempferia galangal), isen (alpinia galangal), kayumanis (cinnamon), cengkeh (cloves), kayu cendana leaves and lulur (a yellow paste made from turmeric) and red or white rice that has been soaked in water 10-15 minutes. All these ingredients are mashed together with a pestle in a stone mortar, then this dry mixture is mixed with water and the poultice rubbed and kneaded vigorously into the skin from head to toe. Boreh makes the skin tingle and its heat gradually diffuses throughout the body. You come out smelling like a flower. It is also used to overcome fever and make the patient feel fresher and fitter. An aging woman will apply boreh to her body to keep warm. A tired farm worker with aching muscles will have his wife rub him down with the poultice. Boreh given to adults is hotter and contains such ingredients as cabe jamu (piper retrofactum) cengkeh (cloves), merica (black pepper) and jahe (ginger). The boreh given to children is milder.

Delivery can be a bit of an issue the first several times until delivery companies learn where you live (delivery may be a problem if you live in the boondocks). You can always call the delivery company. and arrange to pick your item up or try to find out when they will deliver. J&T Express, for example, allows buyers to pick up from their office.

At Home in Bali

Design ideas and inspiration for tropical living

How to create an eclcectic gallery wall Last month’s At Home in Bali article was on shopping. Let’s face it, shopping for homewares is a (thankfully) unavoidable pleasure on this fabulously creative island. There’s always room for one more handcrafted Tenganan basket or colourful batik hanging. And who needs any encouragement to pick up another piece of art from one of Bali’s incredibly talented painters? But what to do with all that decorative stuff when you bring it home?

Choose your layout

What goes where

You could say that the perfect wall is a journey of discovery; the choice of pieces is self-revelatory and they tell a personal story to the viewer. How they are displayed is just as important. So consider this: do you lean towards order and organisation, to the symmetrical and structured? Or do you favour casual and organic?

Before you reach for the hammer and start knocking holes into your wall, spread your collection out on the floor and play with the layout, moving pieces around and trying different configurations until you like your composition. Common advice is to start with an item that will be the centre of attention. Then arrange everything else around it. Do take progress photos for reference! (This saved me hours of work on a reno job a few years back. I had bought a pile of reject tiles from the fabulous Sadhus Tiles in Sideman and spent hours arranging them on the floor to make the most of the different patterns and colours. A short while after briefing the tukang, I found him picking up tiles from my creative arrangement and randomly fixing them into place in no particular order. Fortunately I had taken a photo, so off they came, back onto the floor where I painstakingly rearranged them and then supervised every single placement!)

Create a gallery wall A gallery wall is the perfect way to group and display your collections in a way that injects a spark of personality and originality into your home. A well curated gallery wall is a talking point, a curiosity, a chance to share your personal stories. It frees up floor space and reduces clutter. And it gives you an excuse to continue collecting; yes, you can design your wall to easily accommodate new additions. – what a convenient justification for continual shopping!

Do a trial run

While wall galleries may look haphazard, they are actually carefully crafted to create a pleasing visual balance. It is far too easy to muck it up, so having a plan is key, and preparation is essential. Find the right space An unanticipated challenge in creating a gallery wall in Bali is the lack of walls;’ so many of us live in places with open-sided pavilions and no barrier between indoor and outdoor spaces. Fortunately, though it’s fun to play with an enormous area, you don’t need a huge space. Choose your area first helps determines how much you can display. Where it is in your home – whether a living room, kitchen or bathroom – can influence your initial selection. Be creative with your collection The word gallery suggests a wall of pictures, say art and photos. But it doesn’t need to be so. Think outside the box! If you confine yourself to photographs or paintings, consider different genres, techniques, materials. If you are feeling bolder, mix it up with hand-crafted ceramics, Bali crafts, board game pieces, a favourite family recipe, framed mirrors, flea market finds, personal mementos etc. Be inventive, but keep a sharp editor’s eye – there’s a fine line between eclectic and excessive, quirky and kitsch. Find ways to tie disparate pieces together by creating a common denominator in your collection. Choose an overarching theme to tie the look together – could be the theme of the objects themselves (e.g. B&W photos or botanical prints), colour palette (e.g. jungle greens with turquoise accents. Select your wall colour If your chosen objects are mostly bold and bright, stick to a simple white wall so they can stand out. If your photos and paintings are neutral or monochrome, then consider hanging them against a fabulously coloured feature wall to make them pop – and in choosing a strong colour remember that once your gallery collection is in place, it will only be an accent colour. So, permission to go crazy.

There are a lot of sample gallery layouts on Pinterest that can serve as inspiration for your own installation. They mostly fall into three categories: a formal grid where every item is the same size, arranged in a rectangular shape; a smorgasbord of different sized, individually framed art and objects creating an organic overall shape; and anything in between. If you have similar size pictures then go with a symmetrical layout., and select an off-centre, collage layout if you have random items. Select according to what you’ve chosen for your gallery, the space it will be in…and your own personality. How about: • • • •

An arrangement of 6, 9 or 12 strongly themed art with identical frames –great for a strong photographic theme such as B&W Artwork framed in the same style but in different sizes, hung to create one large rectangular shape that creates the illusion of a single piece of art A floor-to-ceiling arrangement in an alcove, or hallway – where it’s easier to have free rein and incorporate smaller pieces without it looking cluttered. A boho grouping of objects in different shapes and sizes and diverse frames, arranged in an organic shape – easy to add more items as and when

Bring order to chaos Think about having one consistent design element to make the space look more cohesive. There’s already visual order if you have, say, equally sized artwork that calls for a formal grid, or disparate pieces that have a common theme or accent colour. But if your collection includes art and objects of different sizes, shapes and subjects, it’s important to introduce a degree of consistency. A neat way to tie everything together is to paint frames the same colour. Another way is to ensure consistent spacing between every frame – two inches between frames is a guide measurement.

Once you are happy with the layout, it is a good idea to do a mock-up on the wall itself to make sure you are happy, and that the composition works with the space available. The simplest way to do that is to create templates of each piece by tracing them onto craft paper and cutting the shapes out, and then temporarily tape to the wall so you can assess how it looks. It’s not an essential step, but it does give you the chance to make adjustments before you commit to hammering. It’s said that your hero piece should be 57 inches from the ground to match eye level on a blank wall, or six inches above furniture placed against a wall. Tip: mark on each piece of paper where the hook will need to be. That way, when you start hammering, you’ll know the nail is in the correct position. (After the nails are in place, you will remove the paper templates and hang each piece perfectly.) Last thoughts If you are in short term rented accommodation, your landlord may not take kindly to your peppering a wall with nail holes. In which case consider a ledge gallery wall instead and install shelves instead; keep them very shallow – more like a ledge, with a lip at the edge. That way you can lean paintings etc along the length…and if you like to change your décor regularly, you can rotate them to bring new energy to the collection. Finally, trust your own personal sense of proportion and balance. Almost every rule can be adapted or ignored. If you love what you create, your gallery wall will be fabulous!

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH So You Want To Live in Bali? Every year the expatriate population seems to double. Retirement visa’s, affordable luxury accommodation and the new wave of digital global nomads all make our little island paradise a very attractive place to live. But what about health care? May people leave this until last on the list of considerations when they fall in love with the glossy brochures and the gentle sea breeze. Don’t forget Bali is still a part of Indonesia, and we are a third world country. Health care to the general population is very basic in comparison, and it is also expensive.

end antibiotics) however they will be happy to order them in for you.

Vaccinations The following vaccines are recommended for living in Bali : • Hepatitis A - This is probably the type of Hepatitis that you will be at most risk of contracting in Bali. Spread by poor hygiene practices and through contaminated food and water. Once you have received the full course you are protected for up to 20 years. • Hepatitis B - Spread through blood and body fluids. Even if you are not sexually active, or partake in other at risk facilities you are still wise to take this vaccine which is valid for up to 10 years. • Tetanus - Very important to keep your Tetanus cover up to date (every 10 years). It is a very common disease here, usually contracted through open wounds. • Typhoid - The typhoid vaccine is wise as it is also spread via poor hygiene practices (Food, Flies, Fingers, Feces, Fornication), however it may not give protection against some of the paratyphoid strains.

Our health facilities have improved vastly over the past few decades, but they are still a far cry from what most people would expect in their home country. While there are certain clinics, medical centers and hospitals that cater for the higher socio-economic group and tourists, their facilities are still limited. Don’t wait until you actually need medical attention to rush to the first clinic that looks “clean”. Do your homework. Ask other expatriates what their opinions are. Visit the facilities; check the staff for their ability in English (or other language). Also ask about their pricing structure. Will they give you a discount if you have a resident’s visa (KITAS)? Will they deal directly with your insurance company? (And you DO have health insurance don’t you!). Don’t expect to see a Western doctor at any of the facilities in Bali. It is extremely difficult to get license for overseas doctors to practice here. Health Insurance Please, please, please, make sure that you have good health cover. Medical care in Indonesia is now VERY expensive, and you are not covered by your own countries health fund (e.g. Medicare). Medical assistance, and evacuation, can cost anywhere between USD $6,000 and $ 60,000. That fee can double for remote area helicopter retrievals. Also note that if you consider that you can put yourself on a flight and hop down to Australia for emergency treatment, think again. Even simple (and relatively common) disease such as Dengue fever will not be accepted on a commercial flight.

• Polio - This is one people tend to forget, however we did have an outbreak of polio in West Java several years ago. You will need a booster every 10 years. • Japanese Encephalitis - JE is a mosquito borne disease, and yes it is present here, but fortunately it is not common. You might want to discuss this vaccine with your travel health or vaccine clinic. • Tuberculosis - This is a very active disease in Indonesia. You should probably get your TB status checked before you come to Bali as this is quite complex. (Chest X rays, skin tests etc). Some centers are recommending vaccine, some are now saying just treat the disease if you get it. • Rabies - This a really nasty (fatal) disease, and the post exposure treatment is outrageously expensive, so you might want to consider this one. The vaccine is 3 shots on day 0,7 and 21. Naturally if you have children, their standard vaccine program should be kept up to date. You should start your vaccination program 3-6 months before travel, as some vaccines are given in courses over several months. I can’t find the medication that I take? This is a real nuisance for those that regularly take prescription medications, only to find that when they need a re-script the medication is not available here or out of stock. Make sure that you can get what you need before you run out. Often the medication IS available but under a different name. As long as the active ingredients are the same it’s fine. Most pharmacies will not stock very expensive medications (such as some asthma inhalers and high

If you are considering ordering medications on line and having them sent via mail, think again. The post office will probably report the package to the Department of Health and then you could be hours or days trying to get them released. A word on allergies By allergies I mean the mega-allergy kind! This is the kind of allergy that will cause life-threatening reactions such as lumpy red welts and rashes all over the body. Most people who have these kinds of allergies are already aware of this and carry a pre-dosed adrenaline injector called an “Epipen”, and guess what….we can’t get them here. Make sure that you bring yours with you from overseas. What blood group are you? And why does it matter anyway? It matters because the Caucasian (white) population averages about a 15 -25 % negative blood group type. The Asian population averages less than 3%. So if you are a bleeding Caucasian (with a negative blood type), in an Asian country, you are in trouble. If you do not know your own blood group you are being ignorant. (You can find out your own blood type by a simple / cheap blood test with me or directly at any laboratory). Intestinal parasites….Worms! Yes you will get ‘em! You only need to take a walk on the beach to see the semi-wild dogs roaming free to see that even sitting in the sand could give you a dose of the wrigglers. Fortunately treatments are readily available “over the counter” at most pharmacies and supermarkets. Wherever worm infestation is suspected in a family member (or pet), it is wise to treat all other household members. As infestation is so often asymptomatic I usually recommend that worming treatments are used routinely at 3-6 monthly intervals for all family members, including house staff.

BOOMER CORNER Falling Down – Don’t Do It I’ve been rushing around impetuously all my life. Last year I was hurrying up my path to the gate when one of my hens flapped her way between my feet. I felt myself going over, instinctively threw out my right hand to break the fall and landed on it hard. It only took a second to break a bone in my wrist and tear three tendons off the bones on the back of my hand. But it was six painful months before I could really use my hand again, and 16 months later the wrist is still stiff. I was lucky to regain so much mobility. The wrist is a complicated piece of architecture with 8 small bones delicately connected with nerves, tendons, ligaments, muscles and nerves to the hand and forearm. A bad fracture can require surgery, implants and months of physiotherapy. I got off fairly lightly. But it really made me focus on the issue of falling. We Boomers living abroad are used to thinking of ourselves as strong, adventurous, resilient and active. We’re in denial that if we fall down, we could hurt ourselves. We’re resistant and indignant but the reality is that a fall these days can be serious.

Hip fractures are the most common and serious of all the injuries sustained by older people during falls. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 20 per cent of elderly hip fracture patients die within one year after their fall. (I don’t know how they are defining elderly, they can’t mean US!) Half will become dependent on a cane or walker. Forty percent will need support to perform daily activities. In the past if we fell we’d just get up, dust ourselves off and get on with whatever we were doing. These days a fall brings people rushing over to check whether we’ve broken a hip. Here are some sobering factoids. Falling is the leading cause of accidental death among people older than 65. About one in four falls requires medical attention, and falls are responsible for about 95 per cent of all hip fractures. Only a quarter of older adults who suffer a hip fracture from a fall actually make a complete recovery. And there are so many opportunities to fall here in Bali! It’s as if the environment had been specially designed to knock us off our pins. Uneven pavements, gaping holes, steep steps without railings, slippery tiles, mossy paths, piles of sand or gravel blocking the way… all open invitations to take a tumble. And once down, we are not in a country where 911 will quickly bring skilled assistance. If an ambulance can penetrate the traffic to reach us, we need to know which hospital has the best diagnostic equipment and orthopaedic support. (A general rule for any medical emergency in Bali is to always take a friend to advocate for you; never go alone.) Falling can cause minor injuries from scratches and bruises to more serious harm such as head trauma. Fractures occur most commonly in the hip, but can also affect the spine, arms, wrists, ankles or legs. The risk of fracture is increased in those who suffer from osteoporosis; those fragile bones can snap like matchsticks. Susan Tereba will talk about osteoporosis in her next Boomer column. Even those of us in robust health are at risk because Bali is such a dangerous environment for older people. But most falls are preventable. - Medication is a leading cause of falling. Some medicines or combinations of medicines cause side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness. Taking more than four medicines poses a risk of falls. If you’re taking four or more medications, get a doctor or qualified pharmacist to review them. - Staying active maintains strong bones, muscle and cartilage and therefore increased balance, coordination, strength and flexibility. Walk, swim, do yoga, go to the gym, whatever, but be sure to include activities that improve balance.

We can take denial too far. Two of my friends in Ubud had falls and then walked around for days in great pain before going for X-rays. Both had broken hips which required emergency replacement.

- Get your eyes checked. Identifying medical conditions like glaucoma or cataracts plays an important part in fall prevention. If the vision of one eye is compromised, it will affect your depth perception.

- Wear sensible shoes. Flip flops or shoes with slippery soles are treacherous, especially in wet weather. We need shoe designers to start creating stylish, comfortable shoes with non-slip, textured soles and good ankle support. - Lighting around the house becomes an issue as we grow older. Shady corners and unlit steps or paths can be risky, not just in regards to falling but in seeing snakes as the rainy season approaches. Nightlights en route to the bathroom at night are very helpful. As we get older, it’s important that that toilet is near the bedroom, definitely on the same floor. Bathrooms are the room in which most falls at home take place. - Floors and stairs need special attention. These days non-slip tile is widely available. It was not when I first built here, and wet, shiny ceramic floors can be deadly. Wait for freshly washed floors and steps to dry before walking on them. Attach non-slip backings to carpets and throw rugs. - Pathways need special attention. In shady areas they become mossy and slick in the wet season. Uneven surfaces and loose stones can catch one unawares. - Stairs in Bali can be daunting even to the young and fit. Navigating steep, wet stairs without a railing is an open invitation for a fall. I’ve taken to crab-walking up and down steep steps sideways. - I constantly seem to have pets underfoot. No matter what I’m cooking, at least one dog will be hovering in front of the stove. If they can smell chicken or eggs in the pot, there are three of them weaving between my legs. - De-clutter your floor space. Keep frequently used items in easily accessible places. Get over assuming we’re as invincible as we were 20 years ago. But we’re Boomers. We’re the generation that discovered sex, drugs, rock and roll, yoga, vegetarianism, civil disobedience and so much more. Now we’re embracing elderhood with style. I’m seriously considering carrying a walking stick as a sort of third foot to give me extra balance out there on Ubud’s shattered sidewalks. Perhaps we should make walking sticks a new fashion accessory and compete to design the most attractive and unique examples. Anyway, don’t fall down. Get used to watching your feet. And twirl that walking stick with aplomb.

Alternative Voice For a Long Life... Move like an Iberian If you live in the US – emigrate! Aiming to be a true centennial and live to 100? Consider moving to Spain. By 2040 Spaniards are set to become the world’s longest living people in the world. So, what are the Spanish doing right?

obesity is also rising, which shows that we are no longer following the diet of our grandparents, who clearly ate much more frugally and fruitfully” said Usune Etxeberria, a Basque nutritionist and researcher.

C’mon guys the answer’s simple – it’s Socialized Medicine... eek!

Overall Spanish authorities have been encouraging citizens to better monitor their health and test early for possible diseases, as part of a shift toward preventative health care since the 1990s. Through 2018, many regions launched free screening programs for cervical cancer, adding to existing programs for breast or colon cancer.

Well, let’s just say it’s 60% of the reason. According to the recent study by the Institute of Health Metrics at the University of Washington, Seattle, Spain will overtake Japan as the nation with the longest life expectancy by 2040. Currently the country has an average life expectancy of 82.9 years. Spain topped the 2040 list ahead of Japan and Singapore, while the US fell to 64th in the rankings, down from 43rd for life expectancy today.

Nor do all superfoods come from ecologically pristine parts of the world that the packaging may imply. US goji supplier, Navitas, calls its berries a “Himalayan superfruit,” but their website tells us they’re grown in China in Ningxia Province, nowhere near Tibet—and, it turns out, most of the world’s goji berries also hail from the industrial fields of Ningxia.

This robust outlook for Spanish citizens is confirmed by other studies, including one published last February by Bloomberg, ranking Spain as the world’s healthiest country, based not only on life expectancy and diet but including environmental factors, like access to clean water and sanitation. Spain’s good health doesn’t only reflect its natural advantages, which includes a mild climate, which has already attracted thousands of Northern Europeans to retire there. It also boasts all the natural foods that make up the healthy Mediterranean diet. But, and here’s the kicker, its record longevity is also political, a testimony to strong welfare policies and social cohesion, which ensures older people not only benefit from a public health care system but also from family and community support. US may have had this once, I don’t know, but today... it has a way to go. In contrast to the US, where the issue of universal public health care remains hotly disputed, Spain has long guaranteed universal health care. And that... includes Franco’s Spain. So it’s not really a Fascist or a Commie thing at all, is it? It’s just plain old mixed economy common sense. Their system offers any resident of Spain access to emergency and primary health care without any payment from the patient and... yes, that includes emigrants. The system is similar to that of many other European countries, with the distinction that it is more localised, each region of Spain administering its own health care system, under the power distribution arrangements agreed to during Spain’s return to democracy after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. But... beyond 2040, there are reasons to be concerned about the sustainability of the Spanish model. A dwindling workforce may raise financing issues as the portion of residents subject to income tax falls. Spain has one of the world’s lowest fertility rates. That means Spain will will need more immigration to sustain its workforce. “Today our life expectancy has got much longer, but our

Are these foods really worth the faddish premium they command? Almost certainly not, although some of the claims may be true: Açaí berries, native to the Amazon rainforest, and goji berries, produced mostly in northern China, are indeed loaded with phytochemicals, plant compounds that appear to protect us from heart disease, brain deterioration, and cancer. And quinoa, the seed of a spinachlike plant grown in the Andes, really does offer a complete, high-quality vegetarian protein. Other claims are more questionable: Açaí and goji berries are not miracle cures for everything, from obesity to sexual dysfunction. The FDA has had cause to rap various Goji product manufacturers over the knuckles for unsubstantiated health claims..

Yet Spain spends comparatively less money on health care than many other European countries. And so far hasn ‘t taken the same measures as other countries to complement the revenues that older people should get, if their living standards are not to fall. You never know, if Trump is impeached or kicked out of office a year from now the US itself may socialise its medical system, so maybe best wait a year before heading off for la vida España. Fad Superfoods a Scam... or just overpriced? It’s tough marketing food. People only eat so much, and in industrialized countries food is plentiful so they don’t easily eat a lot more. Unlike sales of the latest hi-tech gadgets, spending on food tends to be pretty stable and really only increases as the population increases. One way the food industry responds to this inconvenient truth is to roll out “new and improved” product in an endless quest to carve off bigger pieces from a slow-growing pie. Junk food manufacturers are of course masters at the game. But the natural-food industry does it, too - with superfoods such as açaí berries, goji berries, quinoa, and chia seeds. These pricey, often exotic ingredients cycle quickly in and out of the foodie spotlight. Açaí berries were barely known outside Brazil a dozen or so years back, but by 2015 açaí-laced products grossed nearly $250 million in the US alone And while açaí sales have dropped recently, as the novelty has worn thin, coconut oil - touted as a wonder fat - picked up the slack with $80 million sales in 2017, but it too - has now peaked as tastes move on.

More serious than spurious superfood origin myths are their malign effects on the people in their own native region. At the height of the açaí berry craze, for exmple, Bloomberg News reported that the fruit’s wholesale price had jumped 60-fold, pricing out Amazonian villagers, who rely on buying it in the local market. In the Andes, where quinoa has been cultivated since the Incas, price spikes have turned a one-time staple into a luxury, and quinoa monocrops are crowding out more sustainable and traditional cultivation. If that doesn’t faze you, perhaps this will: Quinoa may deliver a complete protein - all of the amino acids you require - in a compact package, but rice and beans together actually do it too, even better. And, like goji berries, blueberries and strawberries are packed with phytochemicals. The only problem is that lacking an exotic back story, food marketers can’t wring as huge a markup from these staples: To give you an idea of the dollars to be made, the domestic blueberry, which is not exactly cheap, is justifiably marketed as a superfood, and in 2012, products featuring blueberries as a primary ingredient, saw their sales nearly quadruple. But they only raked in $3.5 million - less than 2 percent of açaí-based product sales. Yes indeed, food industry’s hawkers have a tough job - and with a modicum of common sense you can make it even tougher for them. The real superfoods are lurking exactly where they don’t want you to look: in produce sections, bulk food aisles, Sunday markets and backyard gardens. Not quite as exotic as the Himalayas. But then, neither are those industrial plots in China where goji berries actually come from.

Local News Foreigner suspected stealing turtles from Sindhu Beach conservation centre Sindhu Dwarawati Turtle Conservation Centre, which is a conservation area in Sanur for turtles, was broken into on Monday morning and it was reported that 24 turtles had gone missing. According to the Head of South Denpasar Polsek, Commissioner Nyoman Wirajaya, police suspected that the thief was a foreigner. “But we are still not sure of the fact,” he said to baliexpress.com on Tuesday. “We received a report at around 8pm Monday night and sent officers to the scene to investigate,” he said. A witness, I Made Winarta, 43, told police that he checked the turtles at around 5am Monday morning. When the man, who is a conservation officer, counted the turtles, he was shocked that there were several turtles missing. “The conservation officer checked the turtles at around 5am and found that there were 24 turtles missing. The thief took mature turtles with sizes from 10 cm to 45 cm and smaller ones about 5 cm in size,” Wirajaya added.

28 Indonesia sees record temperatures, expects blistering heat to continue until next week The unusually high daytime temperatures currently experienced in several parts of Indonesia are expected to persist over the next seven days, the national weather bureau said, advising the public to avoid sun exposure as far as possible and to stay hydrated. A weather station in Tangerang, Banten, just outside Jakarta, registered 39.6 degrees Celsius - the highest temperature ever recorded in the archipelago - on Wednesday and Thursday. The previous record was 39.5 degrees Celsius, recorded in Semarang, Central Java, in 2015. Fachri Radjab, head of the Public Meteorology Center at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), said the sweltering conditions would generally occur in the southern parts of Indonesia. “The reason is the perceived motion of the sun. The sun is currently still around the equator, so [we receive] maximum radiation,” Fakhri said, referring to the shift of the sun’s position across the sky throughout a year, in accordance with Earth’s solar orbit. From September, the sun is situated near the equator as it moves toward the southern hemisphere until reaching its furthest point in December. The sun will be above the southern part of Indonesia, over South Sulawesi, Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara, in October. Fakri said minimal cloud cover, due to the prolonged dry season, was exacerbating the situation. The BMKG has advised people affected by the hot weather to drink enough water to avoid dehydration and to wear clothing that can protect the skin from the sun. It also urged people to be aware of activities that may trigger forest and brush fires, especially in high-risk areas.

The CCTV footage showed someone with foreigner characteristics, wearing a t-shirt and trousers lifting the turtles from the ponds and taking them away at around 3am. But Wirajaya said that they were still not sure that the thief was a foreigner. “We are still investigating. We have never seen a theft like this in the South Denpasar jurisdiction area before,” he said. Police are facing difficulties because there was nobody in the vicinity when the theft allegedly occurred. “We have difficulties finding witnesses, as there was nobody around at that time. The warung near the conservation centre opens at 10am,” he concluded. [seminyaktimes.com October 23, 2019] Thais, Frenchman could face firing squad in Bali drug cases Two Thai women and a Frenchman could face the death penalty after they were caught smuggling drugs into Bali, the Indonesian holiday island’s customs agency said Monday. The Thai nationals - identified as Kasarin Khamkhao and Sanicha Maneetes - arrived last week on a flight from Bangkok and suspicious airport officials found nearly a kilogram of methamphetamine hidden under their clothes, authorities said. “A lab test confirmed all the packages contained methamphetamine weighing 958 grams in total,” Himawan Indarjono, head of immigration at Bali’s international airport, told reporters Monday. The pair - a janitor and an operator of a motorcycle rental shop in Thailand - could face a firing squad if convicted in the Muslim majority nation, which has some of the world’s toughest drug laws.

Several BMKG observation stations in Sulawesi have recorded temperature above 37 degrees Celsius since Oct. 19. Hasanuddin Meteorological Station in Makassar, South Sulawesi, recorded a temperature of 38.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Maros Climatology Station at 38.3 degrees Celsius and Sangia Ni Bandera Meteorological Station at 37.8 degrees Celsius. Next week, there is still potential for blistering temperatures as the sun continues to move south and dry atmospheric conditions hinder the growth of cloud cover, Mulyono R. Prabowo, deputy head of meteorology at the BMKG, said in a statement on Wednesday. He also denied social media rumors that Indonesia was currently experiencing a heatwave. “Indonesia is currently affected by high temperatures but not a heatwave. The heatwave phenomenon does not occur in Indonesia,” he said. [Jakarta Globe October 24, 2019]

Indonesia: Drought Information bulletin - Indonesia According to Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the dry season in Indonesia has culminated back in August 2019. About 92 per cent of the country is currently experiencing drought due to El Nino cycle at the end of 2018, resulting in a drier and harsher dry season. BMKG also noted that meteorological (climate) drought in most of Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara potentially will suffer long to extreme drought. The government predicted the situation to impact the lives of 48,491,666 people in 28 provinces. Nine provinces are severely affected by the drought which are Banten, Central Java, West Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi and Borneo and the Government of Indonesia has declared an emergency drought alert status in seven provinces; Banten, Central Java, West Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara.

current immediate needs are access to clean water and drinking water. The government through National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has been providing drinking water to severely affected by the drought for a total of 28,576,400 litres. BNPB together with the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), BMKG and Indonesia National Army have been coordinating the operation using Weather Modification Technology (WMT). This technology will be used in Jakarta for Java region and Kupang for Nusa Tenggara Barat and Nusa Tenggara Timur. Local Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in each region continues working with local governments, non-governmental organizations, social institutions, the business world, and the community to provide clean water for their communities. [reliefweb.int/organization/ifrc October 17, 2019]

A number of regional governments have reported scarcity of clean water, declining supply of irrigation water and crop failure. According to BNPB report, as of August approximately 20,269 hectares of crop field damaged and facing crop failure because of the drought. In addition, based on various media reports, people in Mount Kidul village located in Jogjakarta province started to sell their livestock for clean water. BMKG predicted that the raining season will start at the end of November until beginning of December 2019. As a response, PMI has been distributing clean water in Banten, West Java, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, NTB and Central Sulawesi Provinces. Based on initial information from BNPB and PMI POSKO, the Growing water deficit threatens sustainability of Bali’s tourism industry

Separately, Frenchman Olivier Jover was arrested in Bali after a package sent from his home country containing some 22.5 grams of cocaine arrived at the airport with his address on it, according to authorities. He faces a long jail term or the death penalty, authorities said. Russian beautician Tatiana Firsova, who allegedly tried to smuggle in 6.6 grams of cocaine, was arrested after arriving in Bali on a flight from Doha last week. She faces up to 15 years if convicted. The four suspects, wearing orange prison jumpsuits, were paraded together in front of reporters Monday - a common practice in Indonesia. The arrests come as two Thai men were sentenced last week to 16 years in prison each after they were found guilty of smuggling one kilogram of methamphetamine that they had swallowed. While death sentences are often reduced to long jail terms, Indonesia has executed foreign nationals in the past, including two Australian masterminds of the Bali Nine heroin gang who were shot in 2015. [news.yahoo.com October 21, 2019]

As reported by NusaBali, Bali is in the midst of a “water crisis.” The Center for the Development of the Bali-Nusa Tenggara Eco-region (P3E), reports that Bali is running an annual water deficit of 336.24 million liters or 336.24 cubic meters. Of the 9 regencies and metropolitan areas in Bali, only 4 enjoy a surplus in their water supply: Bangli, Jembrana, Buleleng, and Karangasem. The remaining 4 regencies and Denpasar are in short supply of water. The extent of the current crisis was revealed by the Chief of P3E Bali-Nusa Tenggara, Rizaluzzaman, in a pre-event press conference held in conjunction with a symposium on “Safeguarding and Ensuring Sustainable Water Supply in Bali” held on Wednesday, October 16, 2019. The actual conference was held at the office of Bali’s Governor on Thursday, October 17, 2019. According to Rizaluzzaman, surveys undertaken by P3E BaliNusa Tenggara show that 66.1% of Bali has an “average” rating for its water supply, while 29.72% are classified as having a “low” water supply and 3.67% are classified as having a “high” or abundant water supply. The lowest available water supply occurs in Buleleng for the Districts of Gerogak, Kabutambahan, and Tejakula. Critically low supplies of water are also reported in Klungkung. Meanwhile, Bangli, located in a mountainous lake district of Bali, has an abundant surplus of water. Rizaluzzaman said that anyone wanting to know the water situation in any area only need look at the leaves on the local trees. He explained that forest cover areas with small leaves have limited water supplies and areas with trees displaying large leaves tend to have surplus water supplies. Accordingly, the Government ecologist recommends that areas with trees with large leaves remain undisturbed and allowed to act as land banks or water reservoirs for the rest of the Island. He went on to emphasize that Bali must pay

special attention to water conservation, adding, “What happens to tourism without water?” Rizaluzzaman noted with appreciation efforts by hotels in Bali to create water absorption areas to preserve subterranean water tables. The same warning regarding a diminishing water supply was also sounded by a representative of the Agency for Riverways (BWS) for Bali-Penida, I Ketut Alit Sudiastika, who said Bali is experiencing a water deficit of 18.73 cubic meters of water every second of the day. The current water demand for the entire island of Bali has reached 119.96 cubic meters per second. This compares to a supply capacity of only 101.23 cubic meters of water per second. Alit Sudiastika said Bali has the potential of producing 216.87 cubic meters of water per second, a total that could only be achieved with a substantial investment in infrastructure. Sudiastika said Bali’s declining water supply was due, in large part, to the rapid change in land usage that is destroying what were once water catchment areas. Bali counts 391 rivers with a total length of 2,776 km. Of the 391 rivers, only 162 maintain a flow of water on a yearround basis. A remaining 153 rivers only flow during the rainy season and 76 rivers are classified as “dead” or “dried up.” [Bali Discovery October 29, 2019]
