What would life be like if we had no courage to attempt anything?

Dining with Style! The Dining Room is a pleasant open bamboo rotunda in Candi Dasa. Managed by the Watergarden Hotel it displays all of the professionalism of that connection. It is a level above the usual warungs and cafes of that area. Over the past few years a number of international chefs have had some input to this menu, and it now presents an interesting mix of cuisine. The Dining Room is on the site of the ill-fated Kedai, once the shining light of Candi Dasa, amazingly let slide into oblivion, empty and decaying for years. It was fully restored in similar style but far grander and classier than the original. It is at the southern entrance to Candi Dasa, with views across to Nusa Penida. Even though the new menu is impressive I am still drawn to the earlier dishes of the Middle East, always yearning for something different and appreciative when that option is provided. The Turkish Boreks [thin ‘yulka’ pastry] are filled with a mix of feta and parsley, a dip of yoghurt and mint on the side. They are light and crunchy, very good. Hummus with Khubz [wheat flour flat bread] is chicken pea puree flavored with tahini, olive oil & lemon, served with that Arabian flat bread. From the Mediterranean there are some refreshing starters. Bruschetta with Tomatoes & Basil are on toasted Ciabata bread which has been topped with diced & peeled tomatoes that were tossed in virgin olive oil, basil, garlic & balsamic. Potato Skins with Tzatziki Dip, roasted potato skins served with Tzatziki yoghurt-cucumber garlic dip and that favourite at all Spanish restaurants around the world, Garlic Prawns, simply deep-fried in olive oil, served with a garlic-corianderthyme & tomato concasse, accompanied with flour tortillas. The Lebanese Fattoush is a refreshing salad, romaine lettuce tossed with diced tomatoes, cucumber, onion, mint, parsley, za’atar spice [mainly oregano and thyme], lemon juice & chunks of dry roasted flat bread although I quite like the simple Breaded Bocconcini [pictured] a semi-soft, white and rindless un-ripened mild cheese that was once made from water buffalo milk, a specialty of Naples. This unique cheese is melted slightly for this dish which makes it far more edible and the small rounds are dunked in crunchy breadcrumbs before deep-frying. Soups can be the Mediterranean Seafood Soup with

shrimps, squid, baby clams, scallops and fish. All of which are poached in a white wine and tomato broth enhanced with fresh basil. Something different is the Soup of Pistou, a mix of red & green beans, celery, tomatoes and pasta blended with a tomato, basil, garlic and parmesan pesto. A vegetable soup that actually has a defining taste, not the usual blandness of nothing! It is the main courses here that have changed the most of late. Although the great Turkish Tavuk Gogsu Sarmasi has survived, it is in za’atar & olive oil, the marinated chicken breast stuffed with saffron rice, cashew nut & currants, served on sautéed spinach and topped with a white wine tarragon sauce, accompanied with steamed rice.

C/Ns/I-01 Feb 17

Ekmek, a moist rich cake made from shredded phyllo paste, custard and cream. However there are international deserts here too, a Crème Brulee [vanilla and pandan, a French/ Asian mix], Chocolate Mousse and Apple Cake. All in all a rather amazing dining experience for Candi Dasa. A lunch or dinner at The Dining Room tops off a relaxing day trip to Candi! It also provides a good reason to stop, and relax, if passing through.

My main, almost every time, is the Moroccan Tangine. It is a rich chicken broth with chicken cubes, carrots, baby eggplant, spinach, olives, potatoes, zucchini, dried apricots, raisons, apples, cashew nuts & Ras el hanout spice [an incredible mix of spices, usually including cardamom, cumin, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, allspice, dry ginger, chili peppers, coriander seed, peppercorn, sweet and hot paprika, fenugreek, and dry turmeric, very Moroccan] the tangine is served in the traditional ceramic bowl. Excellent!

Chicken Parmigiana is now on the menu as is a very subtle Chicken Scallopine with Sage; the fillet is seasoned with clove, pepper and garlic then layered with sage, red pepper and ricotta cheese, rolled and cooked in a herb and tomato sauce. A recent French influence has seen Chateaubriand added to the menu, béarnaise sauce and all. There is also now a Bouillabaisse, that famous seafood stew from Marseilles.

Atmosphere

: Relaxed, with style.

Overall

: A class above the rest!

The new international dishes include a selection of pies [beef, chicken and vegetarian] and all those standards necessary to cater for a tourist market that comes from all corners of the globe. Then there is the wood-fired pizza oven in its specialty position between the restaurant proper and the street-front, a round colourful building sitting almost like a mid eastern shrine, with a range of pizzas that includes all the standards plus a few specials; Mushroom, Cheese, Olives and Ham, the Chicken Supreme [chicken, spinach, sage, bell peppers, mozzarella – parmesan cheddar cheeses] or a Meat Fest [minced beef, chicken, ham, salami, mozzarella - cheddar & Parmesan cheese & mixed herbs] or The Dinning Room Special [bacon, baked onions, salami, mushrooms, thyme, cheddar & goats cheese]. Although I am a Pepperoni freak, can’t get enough of it. Here the Pepperoni Feast is with red & green peppers, chilli flakes, baked onion, garlic & oregano.. wonderful! The dessert list retains a couple from the old menu; Turkish Om Ali, crumbled puff pastry sheets, layered with raisons, coconut, cashew nut and tossed with sweetened milk, covered with cream and flambéed in the oven and the Greek

Update

Il Tempio is found on Jln. Kartika Plaza, in front of The Bali Garden Hotel. Italian for ‘the temple’ it faces the small Balinese Hindu temple at the street front corner of the property, and serves Italian cuisine, classic but with a modern touch. New additions to this menu have widened its appeal and include many that qualify for that ‘healthy but tasty’ description. Whilst Il Tempio is a great place for a meal it is also wonderful for snacking, a past time that I love. There are so many small plates, all with contrasting tastes. Quite amazing were the Sweet Potato Croquettes. The only sweet potato I had ever seen before had been white and not that sweet. These were purple. They were round crunchy crumbed balls of sweet flesh, well complemented by the pesto mayonnaise. Pork 3 Ways is supposedly their most popular dish. It contains such an excellent baby back rib that I wonder that ribs are not their biggest seller. Together with that tasty rib is a chunk of very crisp pork belly and a small pile of braised pork loin, it all sits on a corn puree. Even better was the Moroccan Spiced Lamb which was served with baba ganoush, red cabbage, coriander and a pickled salad. I am afraid that I am not a fan of ‘raw food’ [or zucchini], BUT the Raw Zucchini Pasta chef presents here is sensational! To add to my surprise it is also a full Vegan dish. A spirally machine is used to create vermicelli-like strips from the zucchini and when added to a tomato paste made from sun-dried tomatoes [gives it a tang] and cheese made from cashew nuts…you have the ultimate ‘healthy but tastes good’ dish! The mains include Mahi-Mahi fillet poached in wine, a slow-cooked Beef & Asparagus Ragout and a dish that was gluten-free, vegetarian, healthy and great…. Couscous & Quinoa with grilled bell peppers, sun dried tomato and asparagus with a lime cilantro dressing. However the highlight for me was their Roast Chicken on Purple Gnocchi [pictured]. Served with sweet potato gnocchi, purple again and the chicken flesh so moist and tender. With their budget prices [all but 2 dishes under Rp.100,000] pleasant relaxing location and parking, it makes for a perfect stop, any time.

Grow Up has opened on the roof top of the L hotel, Kerobokan, partnering Ryan Clift’s wonderful ground floor restaurant, GROW. With sunset views and a stylish fitout it is a great place to relax at the end of the day. Amazing small tastes are available before descending to the full deal downstairs at Grow. If you just want to nibble whilst enjoying your cocktail then there are plates of Japanese style Steamed Edamame sprinkled with sea salt or Madras Curried Popcorn. The small plates include wonderful spicy Scotch Eggs drizzled with a tomato based sauce, Duck & Cashew Nut Rillettes, Tuna & Coconut Ceviche, Confit Octopus and the specialty of the house, Steak Tartar with truffled egg yolk and charcoal croutons. Open from late afternoon every day and free entry, as it should be!

Ruth’s Diner has gone south. They have closed their original Sanur shop and have now re-opened at a new site about I km south, but still on The ByPass, at No. 50. Ruth’s is popular for breakfasts [American style with hash browns, waffles or pancakes], sandwiches and subs [American for bread rolls], meat and vegetable pies [even an Aussie Pie] and cakes [berry cheesecakes]. Full meals are also available. You can start with American, as in Californian Spring Rolls, Buffalo Chicken Strips [breaded chicken with tangy sauce, Texan BBQ, honey mustard or what they call hot & spicy] or Asian [Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Tempe Sliders] and follow with American favourites; Beef Stroganoff, Goulash, Spaghetti & Meatballs or a good old fashioned Beef Stew. Yes they are American so they sell Burgers too!

Nostimo is about to open in Ubud. Already a success on Jln. Petitenget, it will bring Greek cuisine to Ubud for the 1st time. The original, open 12 months, has had the distinction of being one of the rare newbies that were busy from day one. Nostimo Ubud is currently under construction taking over half of what was, once upon a time, the Wunderbar. It will be on Jln. Pengosekan, a strip of road that is almost becoming another Eat Street ….. 32 restaurants/cafes in less than 1 km., and still they open new ones.

Pit Stop has opened on Jln. Hayam Wuruk, in Renon. It has no connection to the longstanding Pit Stop on Jln. Petitenget, Kerobokan, just a name copier, so original! Situated next door to the Popular supermarket it has small inside air-con and open roadside eating areas. The menu is a mix of local ‘International’ dishes and standard Indonesian fare. Chicken Cordon Bleu [even spelt correctly, that gives it a big tick already], and Parmigiana join Chicken Wings, Hamburgers and Hot Dogs among the international dishes, and at prices that are amazingly low. Sop Buntut, Ayam Rica-Rica, Ayam and Iga Bakar as well as Sate Babi Manis are among the local tastes. Morning Glory is an expression that has many meanings! It is also the name of a café on Sunset Road, Seminyak. No Italian espresso this is an Indonesian coffee shop, with local coffee from west Java. It is a pleasant place where it is easy to relax. It attracts a mainly local crowd and appears to have built up quite a following. Mainly for one of those any time snacks. Sandwiches [Croque Madam] and Burgers [Pineapple, Beef & Cheese], Sego Campur Bali [includes ayam betutu, telor balado and sate lilt], Ayam Sambal Matah and an unusual Green Tea Breakfast Set. Mojitos seem to be the specialty of the house.

Maya Resorts continue to offer international dining experiences with visiting chefs of the world, The next one is Eric Boutté, owner/chef at L’Aubergade, a Michelin Star listed restaurant in Dury, France. He will present two dining experiences, firstly in Maya Sanur on June 10, 2017 and again in Maya Ubud on June 14, 2017. He grew up in Abbeville (Somme) and worked in impressive restaurants like La Côte Saint-Jacques, La Chartreuse of The Val Saint – Esprit and Ledoyen, Chef Boutté specializes in classical French Cuisine. The dinners will include Le Crabe et le Potiron, Le Saumon et la Pomme de Terre, Le Thon, la Betterave et le Panais, Litchi et Champagne and features his signature dish, Le Véritable Chou Farci, followed by L’Ananas et le Chocolat. The cost is Rp 660,000++ per person. Early reservation is essential. NC/R/G-7 June 17

For those of short on time but in serious need of an all over freshen up, Body Temple’s Face and Body Pamper Package is right up your busy alley. Wind The kites are flying, sea breezes and blue skies are here in abundance so yes, I’d say it’s official…. Bali’s dry season has finally arrived! But while the drop in humidity and respite from that constant state of sweatiness is a welcome relief, these drier months can play havoc with sun kissed skin and a little extra TLC is often required to help maintain that youthful and dewy complexion. Now if you ask me, there’s always an excuse for a spa day and Body Temple is certainly making it difficult to resist this month with their special rejuvenation packages designed for all ages and skin types. Dry weather can bring dry skin and Body Temple’s Purity Exfoliation Ritual can let you relax, renew and rejuvenate this June. Your 90 minute Purity Exfoliation Ritual begins with an algae based, cream body scrub designed to gently exfoliate and

down from your hectic day with a 45 minute massage using a combination of essential oils the likes of orange, lavender and mandarin to enhance that sense of relaxation and calm. Then, treat your dial to an express facial that harnesses the healing benefits of the ocean and the fruits of the earth. The initial phases of cleansing and toning incorporate red algae and grape fruit; the prelude to a melt in scrub for all skin types combining the four active ingredients of papaya extract, lactic acid polymer powder, Vegepol - a plant origin polymer that clears blocked pores and Seve Bleu, an innovative new ingredient designed to rehydrate and remineralise! Forget the delicate details, it’s safe to say that after all of those AND a Sichuan pepper based finishing serum that gives a botox like tightening effect to the skin, you’ll emerge feeling fresh, fabulous and a few years younger!

If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.

Whoever said spa days were an adult only affair, clearly hadn’t laid eyes on Body Temple’s Kids Corner Treatment Menu designed especially for the junior burgers! This month you can treat your little ones to a spa package including a Mini Me Massage with mani or pedi for little princesses or a massage and body scrub combo for mini men and save a whopping Rp175K in the process! There’s a treat for the kids and for mum and dad’s wallet. Exciting news for Finns Recreation Club Gold and Platinum members, as of June 1st, you can enjoy a massive 30% discount on all treatments and services at Body Temple! You can find Body Temple Spa at two convenient locations, downstairs at Finns Recreation Club (formerly Canggu Club) and adjacent to Finns Beach Club on Berawa Beach. Finns Staff Get Their Hands Dirty to Keep Bali Clean

Bags used for monthly clean ups and rubbish collection are oxo-biodegradable as opposed to regular garbage bags which simply contribute to the overuse of plastic on the island.

Beach Club is one Bali business that has jumped on board the trash train in an effort to reduce the unsightly rubbish that tends to tarnish our island paradise.

In an ongoing effort to support sustainability and continue Finns’ rubbish recycling program, the collected trash is sorted into organic and non-organic waste, with recyclables being sold to respected local companies for reuse and redistribution. Staff involved in the clean up effort not only benefit from this ongoing environmental education program in the hope they may pass on such recycling efforts to their family unit, they also receive proceeds from the sale of these recyclables as an additional part of the service element of their salary!

It’s no surprise to most that Bali battles an ongoing issue with pollution and while many are quick to point the finger at the island’s rapidly expanding tourism industry, one could argue that this major money spinner might be an integral part of the solution as international media attention brings light to the problem and provides some impetus for change. Action, education and a desire to be a part of this change are vital in order to see any improvement in the problem and Finns

For some time now, Finns has been organising regular beach clean ups between the creeks that mark the borders of Berawa and Perancak in support of the local ‘Keep Bali Clean’ campaign. Staff from all departments (including management) are asked to attend these early morning beach combing sessions and together they are achieving positive results. Sure this continuous clean up effort helps to maintain a clean sandy ‘canvas’ for Finns guests to enjoy, but it also benefits smaller local businesses and beach goers in the entire area and stretches much farther than merely the immediate beach club frontage. In addition to these group initiatives, two of Finns’ staff are assigned the task of cleaning the Berawa section of beach every morning.

Finns twice monthly beach clean ups are scheduled for the second and final Friday morning of each month from 6.30am 7am and it’s incredible how much trash can be collected in just half an hour when there are many hands to make light work! Gloves, bags and tools are provided and everyone is welcome to join in and help out.

Finns itself has taken steps to reduce paper usage, recycle paper and plastic, use grey water for gardening, separate and recycle trash and use alternative bags rather than plastic. A composting system is also being introduced to the beach club.

If you love your island home and are keen to help keep Bali clean, join the Finns team this Friday, June 9th on the Berawa steps at 6.30am and be ready to get your hands dirty to keep your conscience clean! Contact bella@finnsbali.com to be a part of the change you wish to see for Bali’s beaches.

Once you walk through those doors, there’s no turning back as

Indonesian chefs, local produce and the vibrant future of Indonesia’s food industry in the spotlight at UFF17

sayur, and Ibu Sisca Soewitomo’s fish soup. Charles Toto, the Jungle Chef from Papua, challenged his eager audience to try live sago worms foraged from the Papuan highlands, and sample a slice of sago pizza.

From the moment the gates opened to the final mouthful, the third Ubud Food Festival (UFF) was enjoyed by more than 9,000 hungry foodies from 12–14 May. Its colorful multi-venue space played host to more than 100 events set against the backdrop of Ubud’s iconic Campuhan Ridge. The incredible diversity of Indonesia’s cuisines, outstanding Indonesian chefs and entrepreneurs, and the bright future of the nation’s culinary industry took center stage – a testament to Indonesia’s rising culinary status which has been championed by the Ubud Food Festival over the past three years. At the Festival Hub and in venues around Ubud and the island, over 100 speakers from across the archipelago and the Southeast Asian region plated up hundreds of different dishes, and delved deep into the region’s – and the world’s – food landscape. In what will become a permanent fixture for UFF, the allIndonesian free cooking demonstration stage Teater Kuliner attracted standing room only audiences at almost every session. Its popularity encapsulates the Festival’s mission of showcasing Indonesia’s diverse cuisines, brilliant chefs and extraordinary local produce. Indonesian heroes and rising stars delighted fans with contemporary interpretations of much-loved classics, such as Fernando Sindu’s lontong

Indonesian chefs were also in the spotlight at the Kitchen Stage. Petty Elliot tantalized foodies with a sweet tooth with her perfect coconut pudding, as did self-taught TV supercook Bara Pattiradjawane with wingko babat, a traditional Javanese cake. International chefs treated audiences to fresh Southeast Asian flavors featuring Bali’s bounty of local produce, such as Chele González’s Filipino-style squid, Tasia and Gracia Seger’s childhood favorite fried fish with green papaya salad, and Joannès Rivière’s Cambodian-style black sticky rice and scallops. With panels on sustainable fisheries and f a r m i n g , regenerative agriculture, food systems and local and global ecological challenges, the Festival’s free Think, Talk, Taste series generated vital themes. Community-driven solutions to environmental problems, and the crucial need to support producers to

become ‘farmerpreneurs’ were canvased, while panelists often emphasized consumers’ responsibility to create change. “The power is with the consumer. The consumer drives the market. If you want seafood to be sustainable, you must be the one to demand it,” said Fair Trade Manager of Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia Foundation, Yasmine Simbolon, in her panel session on supporting sustainable seafood. Creating new links between local chefs and those from across Southeast Asia, the UFF’s Special Events featured dynamic collaborations in some of Bali’s top venues. The Locavore team plated up alongside Chele González to celebrate Indonesia and the Philippines’ food scenes; Fernando Sindu and Erwan Wijaya created contemporary Indonesian cuisine; and The Night Rooster’s Raka Ambarawan introduced mixologists to Indonesia’s rare exotic fruits. “Food is like a language,” explained Founder and Director Janet DeNeefe. “It’s how we express ourselves. For three days at Ubud Food Festival, thousands of people spoke the same language. We shared all that is meaningful and wonderful about Indonesia, which the world is finally waking up to. “Our mission goes much deeper than sharing Indonesian food – we’re putting the spotlight on the archipelago’s talented and hardworking chefs, cooks, farmers, entrepreneurs, food writers, photographers and restaurateurs. From the top-rated restaurants to our beloved warungs, at UFF we celebrate them all.”

Say What? Question: A number of years ago, my partner told an older woman in our village that he was not interested in her romantically. Ever since then, the woman has been spreading false, nasty rumors about him to everyone she knows. Because my boyfriend refuses to speak to her, she would have no way of knowing the things she says about him unless she has been stalking him. I do not believe that he’s sending naked photos of himself to some girl in Europe, and I doubt he’d even be capable of stringing along two different women at the same time while he is dating me exclusively. I’ve been ignoring her for a couple of years, but it’s now at a point, at which people in our village who don’t know him and me well, ask him – and sometimes me – if he’s cheating on me, or if he really did these things. It’s hurtful to be confronted with these rumors or with pity for being the girl whose boyfriend is cheating on her. I’d like to just confront this woman, but it is not my place to create such drama in the village. Do I speak to her, or just ask people to stop inviting her to events because she is obviously suffering from some kind of mental illness? She has made it clear that she will not dislike us quietly. Help! Dr. ZZ: Mental illness aside, you cannot control what this woman will say or do. If she says nasty things in front of you or to you, you can tell her they’re not true and ask her to stop repeating them; but it’s best not to go out of your way to “confront” her. When people become fixated on someone like this, they hear only what they want to hear. Any attention, even negative attention, only deepens the fixation. Ignoring her is the best strategy. When she walks into a room, walk out, and avoid as much as possible going places where you know she will be. Your only other two options are: 1.) set boundaries with your friends and neighbors about how much you are willing to talk about her and her rumors, and 2.) control your own reactions. If

C/CE/G-18 Jan. 17

someone starts telling you a certain rumor, cut them off at once (“Let’s not talk about her and her rumors”); change the subject, and ask them a question about themselves. It’s also up to your partner to enforce these same boundaries and to stop all rumors in their tracks, to talk frankly with your mutual friends and acquaintances and let them know that a few years ago he refused to date this person, and since then she has been spreading rumors. If the two of you decline to listen to what the rumors are, they won’t be able to send you into a tailspin. Insulate yourselves from her, and remember that the power she has in your lives is mostly the power that you give her. She may never stop being fixated; but eventually, if she is not getting any attention, she will go away and fixate on someone else. So stop engaging with her, stop hearing out the rumors, and stop hanging out where she’ll be. Focus on each other and on building friendships with people who understand about boundaries. Question: I’m a 23-year-old female solo traveler, who is often approached by men. When this happens, my gut instinct is always “AVOID! ESCAPE!” Even if they seem nice and aren’t creepy, I feel as if they are usually approaching me with some sort of sexual agenda. Then, because I am generally charming and accommodating when I first meet people, they often get the impression that I am enthralled with them when all I really want is to get away. If the situation is extreme enough, I am good at setting

C/CE/G-10 May 17

boundaries and exiting gracefully, but I often resort to giving these guys a fake phone number even when they are not pressuring me or being particularly persistent. I know this is a dumb move, but I can’t seem to just say no. I try, and then the moment comes, and I find myself unable to do it. I’m hoping you may be able to offer some insight. Dr. ZZ: There is value in being direct and in acting as if the other person will respect your directness. There is also power in being able to receive another person’s disapproval without internalizing it. If you carry in your heart the assurance that “no” is a complete sentence, and that anything that happens after you say “no” is just noise, you can focus on your own enjoyment within any given interaction and teach yourself to be okay with disappointing another person. Saying no is not easy, but it’s an essential part of growing up. It comes with realizing that not everybody is going to like you, and it is impossible to please everyone; so you might as well please yourself. To learn to be direct in expressing yourself, you need to be willing to live with others’ fleeting disappointments. The more time you spend dodging or explaining yourself, the more you give the impression that you are uncertain and are open to negotiation. Power doesn’t need to repeat itself. Hinting, apologizing and over-explaining don’t work. They simply create a milieu of deniability for clueless or importunate people to capitalize upon while your own rage heightens. Being concise and direct commands attention and respect. You will gain so much personal power when you state a clear and direct “no,” and then move on without rumination or self-doubt. Above all else, develop tenacity for yourself, and exercise a concise “no.”

The Wisdom of Whores by Elizabeth Pisani The Wisdom of Whores is a passionate, intensely honest and thankfully politically incorrect book that tells how sex and drugs have turned the global epidemic of HIV into a billion-dollar-a-year industry. Elizabeth Pisani, who studied AIDS for 14 years, shows sides of Indonesia that we didn’t know existed and takes a no-holds-barred approach to finding out why 40 million people are living with HIV and 28 million have already died of AIDS when we have the knowledge, the money and the means to wipe out the disease in 90% of the world. By the time President Reagan forced the words AIDS out of his mouth in late 1985, 12,689 Americans had died of the disease which had rampaged through gay men in rich countries. In Indonesia, one of the main focuses of the author’s research, the HIV epidemic was like a water buffalo slowly pulling itself out of the mud to reveal it’s true size. The figures are appalling. Out of eight million men who buy sex regularly in 65 million sexual transactions yearly, less than one in ten uses a condom every time he goes to a hooker. Indonesia is not a country that fits neatly into boxes. The country’s sexual landscapes are as varied as its islands, a vast panoply of sexual types and orientations. Faud, for example, is an itinerant truck diver’s assistant who has a steady streetwalking girlfriend in Bandung but who gave blowjobs for money in Jakarta’s cruising parks in the shadow of the Finance Ministry. So here we have a self-proclaimed heterosexual guy who has unpaid sex with a woman who sells sex to other men, while himself also sells sex to other men buying it from transgendered sex workers. It’s complicated. When AIDS first burst into the world’s consciousness in the early 1980’s, Pisani knew that it was the disease she wanted to study. When people asked her what she did for a living, she told them that she worked in sex and drugs. When pressed to be more specific, she explained that she was an epidemiologist who specialized in communicable sexual diseases. Lucky for us, most of the qualitative and behavioral research she carried out was subsidized by NGOs and government organizations she worked for. Although she is able to do all the nerdy things that epidemiologists do, the skill that she had that was most in demand by her employers was her ability to write plain English “fast, to order and about more or less anything.” Drugs make it harder for those who work in HIV prevention. A man might infect a man who infects a drug injector who infects a sex worker who infects a client who infects his wife. Drugs can make you so temporarily stupid that you use a filthy needle to inject a lethal virus straight into your bloodstream. The harrowingly detailed chapter “Landscape of Desire” is about smack, the drug of choice among Indonesian addicts - what it costs ($34/gr), where it is sold, the habits of those who use it, its variable purities, long-term effects, detox centers and just-say-no boot camps. There is much practical advice and pointers on keeping safe. “Back to Basics” provides a succinct summary of all that we know about the causes and prevention of HIV to date as well as little known facts and reminders of what we perhaps already knew but forgot: *HIV spreads much more slowly in cultures where most men are circumcised and spreads fastest in countries where some men have a lot of money and many women have none. *The likelihood of HIV infection in oral sex is vanishingly small (with the unavoidable implication that blowjobs are safe). *Waria (lady boys) are up to 20 times more likely be infected with HIV than female sex workers. *Over 60% of men who bought sex from waria are married and over 80% also buy sex from women.

*Among Jakarta’s 28,000 sex workers, there is virtually no high end in the city’s male prostitution scene. Sleazy discos, massage parlors cruising parks, cavernous dark interiors of old cinemas and the interiors of throbbing karaoke bars are all uniformly down market or as the French say claque. In one particular favorite, the masseuses are blind rent boys who steer customers into cubicles partitioned with cardboard and worn polyester curtains to feel their way to business. *In spite of proof that widespread condom use drastically reduces the risk of HIV infection, the U.S. government spent more than US$1 billion exporting failed abstinence-until marriage programs around the world. But if you sell sex to earn your living, avoiding sex is also your best bet for avoiding paying your rent, for going hungry and for not being able to buy medicine. *One quarter of US-funded NGOs working on AIDS prevention in developing regions like Papua are faith-based. *Peer educators are the most effective in stopping the spread of the AIDS virus in Indonesia. This is someone who persuades someone else just like them to use condoms, go for health screenings and not to share needles. They speak the same language, face the same problems and do not judge. *Pisani explodes the “junkies don’t get laid” myth. Heavy drug users are definitely sexually active. Drugs and risky sex go together. Four percent of Indonesia’s female prostitutes inject heroine. Male prostitutes are even more likely to shoot up and practice all the types of sex most likely to pass HIV on to non-injectors. The author feels solidarity and empathy with the wretched of the earth, thus is able to draw out spontaneous and unguarded answers from her interview subjects. Pisani burrows into the life of the people who inhabit Jakarta’s underbelly. Chameleon-like and able to adapt to her surroundings, she brazenly goes anywhere without fear, moves amongst all classes of society and is able to talk her way out of any situation. Pisani exhibits the same bravado and people skills that so distinguished her later magisterial work Indonesia, Etc. on contemporary Indonesia. For this book, Pisani interviewed more than 4000 subjects in different parts of Indonesia. No data equals no problem, so this meant spending nights among sex workers soliciting client soldiers, sailors and civil servants on dark street corners, in slummy red-light districts, along railroad tracks and at remote transport terminals where junkies came to shoot up. In her tactile, vivid descriptions of decrepit whorehouses down the city’s back alleys and along fetid waterways you can almost feel the miasma and smell the stench.

The Wisdom of Whores is one of the most penetrating and eye opening studies of Indonesia’s socio-economic niche subcultures ever published. The book’s real life, face-to-face encounters with sex workers, johns, gay men, drug users and all their diverse sexual practices make the most compelling reading. It takes a lot of guts to write a book about the sex trade. Hail to the writer who explores these little known worlds with such wit, verve and compassion. The Wisdom of Whores: Bureaucrats, Brothels and the Business of Aids by Elizabeth Pisani, Granta Publications 2008, ISBN 978-1-84708-0769, 372 pages, notes, bibliography, index.

20 WHICH ASSET WILL PRODUCE THE BEST RETURN? In the last article we looked at emerging market equities. In 2009 this asset class produced a return of 78.5%, way above all other asset classes.

Equities have been very much ‘middle of the range’, occupying the middle three spots for seven out of the nine years. Returns were positive in six out of the nine years.

But in 2008 and 2011 it produced the biggest losses! So what are the alternatives and which asset class should we be looking at for the best returns? Here are the nine major asset classes you could consider investing in:

Emerging Market Equities we covered last time and mentioned again earlier. Suffice it to say they are likely to be found either close to the top of the chart or the bottom! Since they have been close to the bottom for three out of the last four years there is a good chance they will return to the top in the next couple of years.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Global Cash (fixed deposits in a basket of currencies) Developed Market (US, Europe etc) Bonds US High Yield Bonds Emerging Market Bonds US Equities (specifically US due to the market’s dominance) Developed Market (US, Europe, Japan etc.) Equities Emerging Market Equities Commodities (including gold, oil) Global Property

Commodities have performed very similarly to emerging market equities. Hardly ever in the middle, they are either close to the top of the chart or right at the bottom. In fact they spent six of the past nine years in the bottom three places. They did well last year, coming second only to US High Yield bonds but with increased global spending on infrastructure and defence they could be in for a good run again.

What about residential property? For many people the most important investment they will ever make is in their home. It is likely to be their best investment as over the long term it is an appreciating asset and avoids the need to pay rent. But it doesn’t work well for everyone. There are maintenance costs and liabilities and there are times when selling a home can prove very difficult. If your home is not in your own country, like Bali for example, there are other potential issues. Where investment properties are concerned, from a global perspective there are so many variables that it is not possible to make a meaningful comparison with other asset classes. Suffice it to say that a residential property in your home country is an important investment that is likely to take priority over other investments, and there is also a place for investment properties if you can put up with potential hassles and the illiquid nature of property. Global Property does however figure in the list of nine asset classes but rather than physical properties it is a measure of the prices of property-related stocks which are listed and completely liquid. An investment in a fund containing property shares will reflect the overall trend in property values. Interestingly, Global Property was the top performing asset in three out of the nine years covered by this study which was compiled by Momentum Investment Management and Bloomberg. Property sounds good but what about the other assets? The next best performer at the top of the chart was Emerging Market Bonds, taking the no. 1 position in 2011 and 2015. These were both very poor years in global markets and while the bond funds produced only modest returns they helped to counterbalance the poor performance of other classes. Hence the importance of diversification. Developed Market Bonds took the top spot in 2008, returning 7% at a time when global stock, property and commodity markets were in turmoil and falling by 37% to over 50%. They came second in the chart in 2011, another poor year for other investments, but have performed relatively poorly in every other year. With interest rates at rock bottom and likely to rise they remain poor value, yet will still be seen as a safe haven in troubled times. US High Yield Bonds have been at the higher end of the chart through most of the period, dropping into the bottom four only once in nine years. They reflect the strength of US corporations but lack the volatility of equities. US Equities performed relatively poorly in the years 2008- 2012 but have been in the top three spots for the past four years. The ‘Trump Bump’ has given them added momentum this year but they are now considered over-valued, although it may be premature to write them off. Developed Market

The worst performer in terms of places on the chart would be Global Cash. It was bottom of the chart for four years out of the nine. But, and this is an important but, it was the only asset class never to show a negative return. True, the returns have been miniscule since 2010 but at times when other asset classes are losing heavily it is good to have a healthy level of cash as a buffer. This should preferably be held in bank accounts as opposed to within a portfolio as the charges of the latter would negate the small returns. Cash within a portfolio should be kept to a minimum to cover charges or should be held as such for only very short terms. But solid reserves in the bank are a must. They will help you cope with short term needs and contingencies and provide a buffer to ensure you can keep up contributions to savings and pension plans and maintain all your long term financial plans. So which asset class will produce the best return? By now you will have guessed it. We don’t know, and in any given year it could be any one of the nine listed assets classes. In a year when everything goes belly up it could be cash with its zero return. In a boom growth year commodities and emerging markets can and do produce returns in excess of 75%. If you could forecast the ‘winning’ asset class every year you would soon be very rich indeed. But your chances of doing so are extremely small. The wisest strategy is to build a core of assets that are most consistently in the middle to upper range surrounded by smaller amounts invested in the assets that are more volatile. The latter will produce bonus returns in good years that should more than counter the losses in poor years. But sticking to the plan is important. Ditching assets after two or three years of poor returns will only lead to disaster. Winning strategies call for patience and a will to stay the course.

The Best Coffee Blogs So last month -- in my piece about tea blogs -- I promised a column on coffee blogs for those who prefer the dark brew that Talleyrand famously said should be drunk as “black as the Devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love.” Here’s a rundown of the most interesting and educational coffee blogs that I’ve come across so far. In the spirit of Talleyrand’s conception that coffee should be ‘pure as an angel,’ most of these blogs feature a focus on specialty coffee people, preparation and places. No instant coffee here.

THE COFFEE COMPASS (www.thecoffeecompass.com) The team at Coffee Compass state their mission as ‘helping you navigate the world of craft coffee’ and focuses on interviews and information about farmers, importers, educators, consultants, roasters and baristas – people at every step of the production of specialty, or craft, coffee. This blog also covers individual cafes, for example, one article is entitled, “Three Must-Visit Coffee Shops in Tokyo.” Again, this is a stylish blog with lots of gorgeous photos. THE COFFEETOGRAPHER (http://thecoffeetographer.com)

Here, in no particular order, is my list of favorites: THE COFFEE GEEK (www.thecoffeegeek.com) This blog has been maintained since 1997, so it’s not only one of the oldest coffee blogs, it’s also one of the oldest blogs I’ve come across. This blog is full of product reviews, i.e. coffee makers or espresso machines by brand, as well as a guide and ‘how-to’ section, i.e. how to foam milk properly or how to make Vietnamese drip coffee. The blog also contains a section of forums for readers on any aspect of coffee brewing, roasting and preparation you can think of. The blog also contains a job section, as well as a buy, sell and trade area. The blog is very functional – that is, it has clearly defined sections that offer a lot of information about coffee, but it’s definitely not stylish.

This blog is described as ‘an independent, web-magazine devoted to covering, documenting and curating the revolutionary culture of specialty coffee … driven by photo essays, interviews and short form posts.’ The articles cover a broad range of coffee culture topics, from history, to film, to travel, to music and art.

DAILY COFFEE NEWS (http://dailycoffeenews.com) The Daily Coffee News blog is run by Roast Magazine and is geared at people working in the coffee industry, although the articles offer a wealth of information to justplain coffee aficionados as well. The blog offers a combination of industry news and coffee culture articles, with stories about coffee origins, roasting, retail and industry ‘movers and shakers.’

COFFEE REVIEW (http://www.coffeereview.com) This blog is another one that’s been running almost since blogging started to become popular. Coffee Review was first published in 1997 by Kenneth Davids and Ron Walters, both professionals who work in the coffee industry. Davids, the editor and chief writer, is an author who has published three books on choosing, roasting and brewing coffee. Walters has been involved in marketing and management in the food industry. Together, they established the blog to serve as a coffee equivalent of the wine-industry’s blind tastings, that is, to conduct blind-tastings of coffee, and rate them using a 100-point system, and publish the reviews, in order to educate consumers. Coffee Review has become one of the most widely read coffee blogs, with over one million visits in 2015. SPRUDGE (www.sprudge.com) Sprudge was originally set up by Zachary Carlsen and Jordan Michelman, two coffee lovers and writers from Portland, Oregon, in 2009. The blog features stories about what the writers call, ‘global coffee culture’ as well as coffee journalism. The blog covers worldwide coffee events, such as new café openings as well as coffee festivals, expos and tours. Articles range from stories about machines that count beans or latte art to interviews with authors of coffee-related books or winners of international barista competitions to stories on caffeine and health-related topics. The blog features a job board, with US-based positions in cafes or coffee companies, as well as a related podcast, featuring interviews with coffee people. This blog is stylish and lovely, with lots of photos.

ESPRESSO MY ESSPRESSO (www.espressomyespresso. com) This blog is another older one, which was set up in 2000, and has been running for over 16 years. The writer, Randy Glass, calls his blog, ‘an ongoing internet novelette’ about coffee. The blog has a more personal feel than the others, as it is supposed to be more of individual’s exploration of coffee culture. The writer started the blog with a quest to find the best espresso machine, and then progressed into learning how to prepare the perfect coffee, before venturing into home roasting, blending different varietals and becoming an all-around self-taught expert on coffee preparation. Glass’s blog contains a section of ‘How-To’ pages, which cover all topics of coffee preparation. He also offers a list of reviews of consumer products, from coffee makers to grinders to portable cups. Glass offers a section called “Coffee College” which contains links to articles and books on coffee, for further learning. He also provides online links to many other coffee sites, including recipes, food pages and online forums.

CLOVELESS IN BALI Every time I’ve walked into my pantry for the past few months I have been beguiled by the rich, evocative aroma of cloves. There aren’t a lot of clove trees around Ubud. Wayan Manis’ mother planted one about 15 years ago just for the hell of it, and now harvests eight to ten kilograms a year. I help the family to sell as much as I can, but it’s a glut on the market and inevitably a big sack remains in the pantry, perfuming the air.

from cloves. Although coffee and cocoa are also grown on the mountainsides, cloves are by far the most lucrative crop. With about 600 hectares in clove production and with each hectare usually producing about 700 kilograms of cloves, Munduk’s farmers will lose the income from 420,000 kilograms of cloves this year. In neighbouring Jembrana, where farmers also replanted rice fields with clove trees, this year’s crop has also failed.

Cloves have been around for a long time. They’ve been found in a ceramic jar in Syria which was dated to around 1720 BCE. A Chinese leader 2000 years ago demanded that people around him chew cloves to sweeten the breath. Muslim merchants traded them in the Middle Ages. So ancient trading routes can be traced by the movement of cloves and other commodities from a few islands in Maluku, which was the only place they grew at that time, around what was then the known world.

Cloves are chemically and medically interesting. Several bioactive compounds have been isolated from clove extracts, including flavonoids, hexane, methylene chloride, ethanol, thymol, eugenol and benzene. These biochemicals have antioxidant, hepato-protective, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Indian and Arab traders brought cloves, cinnamon, black pepper and other spices to the Middle East; Europeans first encountered spices there during the Crusades and brought them home as expensive treasures. Portuguese explorers set off in search of their origin and opened routes from India through to the Malukus in eastern Indonesia. The fabled Spice Islands became the epicentre of vicious trade wars between the Portuguese, English and Dutch as they competed for the hugely profitable spice trade. The Dutch won, and dominated the spice trade from the early 17th century until Indonesian independence following World War Two. Cloves are the dried unopened flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, a tall evergreen tree in the myrtle family. The name comes from the French ‘clou’ (nail). These days most of Bali’s cloves are grown in Munduk and Jembrana. Clove trees were first planted in Munduk about 45 years ago and now blanket the slopes of Gunung Lesung and Gunung Sangiyang. In harvest season the cool mountain air is intoxicatingly fragrant with the scent of clove oil from the fallen leaves. Cloves are labour-intensive and dangerous to produce. Men climb frail ladders to pick the clove flower buds singly before they open, when they have just turned pink. Falls from the flimsy ladders are not uncommon. Whole families migrate from Karangasam to harvest the crop. All the family members, including the children, spend the nights breaking the tops off the buds that were harvested that day before laying them out in the sun to dry. But this year there will be no cloves from Munduk. The trees failed to set flowers, probably because of the continuous rains over the past few months. This will have a disastrous financial impact on the smallholders who rely on the income

Cloves are the richest plant source of the potent chemical compound eugenol, with clove oil containing between 80 to 95 percent eugenol. Oil of cloves or eugenol is commonly used by dentists because it’s antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and mildly anesthetic. Studies show that eugenol fights bacteria and inhibits the growth of many fungi, including Candida albicans, the pathogen responsible for most human yeast infections. Preliminary research also shows that eugenol is a very powerful fat-soluble antioxidant, inhibiting the accumulation of fat peroxide products in red blood cells and maintaining the activities of the body’s antioxidant enzymes at normal levels. The eugenol in clove oil was recently tested as an aphrodisiac on rats, which hardly require assistance in that department In Chinese and Moghul medicine, cloves were considered to possess aphrodisiac properties. The eugenol in clove oil was recently tested as an aphrodisiac on rats, which hardly require assistance in that department. You will be intrigued to learn that ‘oral administration of a 50% ethanol extract significantly increased mounting frequency, intromission frequency and erections as well as significant reduction in the post-ejaculatory interval.’ But before you try this at home, be aware that ingesting clove oil may cause gastric ulceration. The Journal of Immunotoxicology published a study proving that the eugenol in clove oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Low doses of eugenol can protect the liver against disease and reverse the inflammation and cellular oxidation which causes aging. It was also observed that taking large doses internally could harm the digestive lining and externally can irritate sensitive skin, so use well diluted with a carrier oil externally and very cautiously internally. The leaves of the clove tree contain up to 60% clove oil. In Bali the fallen leaves are gathered and sold by the sack to be distilled into clove oil, much of which is used by the domestic spa industry. Ground cloves are also a very potent anti-oxident, second only to raw sumac bran. Per gram, cloves contain thirty times more anti-oxidants than blueberries. Cloves are not much used in Indonesian cuisine. When a westerner thinks of cloves, festive foods like baked ham and Christmas cake spring to mind. But an Indonesian usually associates cloves with kretek, the spicy, wickedly strong and mildly narcotic cigarettes smoked with great enthusiasm all over the archipelago.

Around two thirds of Indonesian men smoke and about 85% of these prefer kretek to ‘white’ cigarettes. Kretek contain 70% tobacco, and 30% ground cloves and clove oil as well as other additives. Indonesia’s Industry Ministry said it expects the nation’s cigarette production to rise to 524 billion cigarettes by 2020. So the domestic market for cloves is certain to remain strong. Of course, cigarette smoke inhaled by active smokers contains about 4,000 chemicals and is associated with at least 25 diseases in the human body. But it seems that the vast profits of the cigarette market far outweigh heath concerns. According to a study published by the US National Library of Medicine, clove cigarettes deliver more nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar than conventional cigarettes. Ironically, kretek were first marketed as a medicinal product. The creator of kretek was Haji Jamhari, a native of Central Java in the l a t e 1 9 t h c e n t u r y. Jamhari attempted to reduce chronic chest pain by rubbing clove oil on his chest. Seeking a means of a deeper relief, he smoked hand-rolled cigarettes of tobacco, dried clove buds and rubber tree sap wrapped in a dried banana leaf. According to the story, his asthma and chest pains vanished immediately. Word of Jamhari’s cure spread rapidly among his neighbors, and the product soon became available in pharmacies as rokok cengkeh (clove cigarettes). Kreteks became widely popular. Commercial manufacture started in earnest in the 1930s. Most of Bali’s clove crop is sold directly to cigarette manufacturers in Java. Given the failure of this year’s crop, the value of that sack of fragrant cloves in my pantry should start escalating soon. Wayan Manis is open to offers.

Move over Moringa Make room for Spirulina Remember the spirulina craze from the 70s and 80s? Yep, that tasteless, motley green powder we mixed with water and choked down because it “was healthy and good for you”? Today it is enjoying a rebirth as one of the most talked about superfoods. Amidst all the hoopla about superfoods it is taking a prominent place with the recognition that it is, in fact, the most nutrient dense food on the planet because of all the nutrients, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and proteins it contains. The United Nations and the World Health Organization have labeled spirulina a complete food because it contains all of the essential amino acids and many of the essential nutrients for good nutrition. What exactly is it? - Spirulina is a bluegreen algae, a living organism that grows in extreme alkaline and high PH environments which is inhospitable to bacteria and other life forms. Spirulina thrives in alkaline lakes where it is difficult or impossible for other microorganisms to survive. Therefore it goes without saying that the bacteria count in spirulina, when harvested and dried without further processing, is low as well. Its name comes from the spiral form that can be observed through a microscope. Spirulina is found worldwide with the highest concentration in Africa, especially in Chad and the Rift Valley, in Latin America (Mexico and the Andean mountains) and in Asia, particularly in Myanmar, Thailand and India. Lesser concentrations are found in the USA’s Klamath Lake in Oregon. The history of spirulina goes back 3.6 billion years with the emergence of the first photosynthetic life forms that in fact created the oxygen atmosphere in which other life forms could develop and thrive. Fossils have been found from that era, showing filaments of these single cells stacked end on end. The shape unmistakably is spirulina. With a long history of human consumption, Spirulina is known to be safe and nutritious. The ancient Aztecs and Incas caught on to its many benefits and made it a staple element in their diet. Long before the Spanish conquest, Peru’s Incas made algae flour and carried dried algae cakes while traveling. The Aztecs called it techuitlatl and used it as an important food source. They often combined spirulina with cacao and chia seeds for an over-all super-boost. Indigenous African populations in Chad still make a traditional green, dry bread from spirulina. Spirulina Farm project in Bali While Bali does not claim any natural high alkaline lakes, the growing conditions for farming spirulina have been aptly replicated by Loik Greuet, an enterprising Frenchman who started a spirulina farm in Kedungu, Tabanan from a special strain called Paracas that is found in a volcanic lake in the mountains of Peru. In this quiet rural village close to Kedungu Beach, he has created 6 separate ponds with a total surface of 800m2 in which he duplicates the high PH environment of a volcanic lake by using clean well water saturated with sea salt and bicarbonate of soda until it reaches a PH level of 10. That is a level at which few bacteria will survive. The ponds are kept shallow at 20 cm deep to encourage the photosynthetic process and keep the algae close to the surface where they are protected by permeable overhead linings to allow sunlight and cooling breezes. These can further be adjusted to allow the optimal amount of light and heat during certain times of the day. The extraction process is simple enough. When the spirulina is ready for harvesting, it is pumped through wide hoses onto a straining bed where the water is drained and the spirulina is pressed to extract all water. The product is then collected

and processed further in an apparatus similar to that used for drying sausages. It is pulled into long spaghetti strands and placed onto mesh screen racks in a drying chamber where the humidity is controlled. This drying process at low temperature in a closed room for 20 hours preserves all the nutriments and guarantees the purity of the spirulina. After drying it is then processed into crunchies which can be added to salads and cereals or ground into a powder delicious in smoothies, soups and any other dish of your choice. The taste is very mellow with a hint of seaweed. There is no fishy taste at all. Health benefits- Spirulina is deemed the most nutritionally complete of all food supplements because it contains a rich supply of many important nutrients, including protein, complex carbohydrates, iron, and vitamins A, K, and B complex. Its distinct bluish tint comes from phycocyanin, a powerful water soluble antioxidant. Phycocyanin is only found in blue-green algae like spirulina—you can’t get it in other foods. It has antiinflammatory and anti-cancer properties, and elements that protect your brain and liver. Spirulina also has a high supply of carotenoids such as beta carotene, is a great source of naturally occurring selenium and yellow xanthophylls, both powerful anti-oxidants. It is rich in chlorophyll, fatty and nucleic acids, and lipids. Spirulina stimulates beneficial flora like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria in your digestive tract to promote healthy digestion and proper bowel function. It acts as a natural cleanser by eliminating mercury and other deadly toxins commonly ingested by the body. Thus, spirulina has countless uses as a supplement for maintaining good health and for preventing diseases. Our rediscovery and interest in algae, the original life form, represents a return to the origins of life to understand and heal our planet. Athletes love spirulina because it increases stamina and immunity levels and its high 60 % protein content helps build muscle mass. Besides being an all-around disease fighter, regular intake of spirulina also reduces the bad cholesterol LDL in the body, lowers blood pressure and thereby helps prevent the onset of cardiovascular diseases.

No toxicity has ever been found according to published scientific studies over the past thirty years. With a pedigree like that, is it any wonder this nutritional powerhouse has now been rediscovered as the superfood supplement of the century? How much is good for you? Spirulina is a potent concentrate and it is advised to ease into it gradually in order to get your body adjusted to the mega dose of nutrients and vitamins. Start with a 1-teaspoon serving (approximately 1 gram) and gradually increase it to the recommended 5 grams. A typical serving of spirulina packs a wallop of vitamins, including the elusive B12, many absorbable minerals, iron that is easily assimilated by the body, carotenoids, phytonutrients and antioxidants. The B12 in particular is very important for vegetarians and vegans as its only source is typically from red meat. Pure spirulina contains no additives.

By Ines Wynn those with hyperparathyroidism and patients currently experiencing high fever. It is not surprising that as early as the 1970’s, the United Nations hailed spirulina as one of the solutions to global malnutrition and a prime food supplement for undernourished children. Consequently algae pioneers have dreamed for decades of harvesting spirulina as a way to feed the millions of hungry people in the world while at the same time supporting a healthy local economy. Buyer Beware - Spirulina is sold worldwide by big manufacturers and conglomerates whose main drive is profits. Consequently the spirulina you buy may not always have the quality and the nutrient content you expect and contain 100% pure unadulterated spirulina. Examine the labels. A clear give-away is the recommended dosage: the higher the dosage, the more spirulina has been mixed or blended with other, mainly empty and sometimes contaminated nutrients. Pure, concentrated spirulina should be consumed sparingly. With a normal healthy diet, one teaspoon per day is enough to supplement your nutrition needs. On restricted diets such as those of vegetarians and vegans, you can safely take in up to 5 grams per day.

Loik is quick to add that the benefits of spirulina also extend to our environment on a big scale. In a time when global warming and climate change effects are of global concern, it is good to know that very little water is needed to produce 1 kg of spirulina; the only loss is through evaporation. Growing spirulina uses 1/3 the amount of water needed to grow soybeans and only 1/50th of the water needed for beef protein. Spirulina protein needs 20 times less land than soybeans and 200 times less than is required for beef production. Spirulina can help in the struggle with global warming as it fixes carbon and produces oxygen. In addition, the consumption of spirulina can reduce intensive animal farming which is a major contributor to global environmental degradation, through the need to grow feed (often by intensive methods using excessive fertiliser and pesticides), pollution of water, soil and air by agrochemicals and manure waste, and use of limited resources (water, energy). Finally, growing spirulina also requires very little land surface area with the further advantage that the land can be marginal, unusable and non-fertile. Spirulina Products - The Bali Spirulina Farms can produce up to 20 kilos per day of wet spirulina which translates into 3 kg of dried spirulina per day. This is not a big volume production. Therefore this limited quantity, packaged in 100g bags, is only sold to specialty shops like Bali Buda, Sharman Organic and vegetarian/raw food restaurants like Earth Café, Seeds of Life, Sayuri’s and Bali Catering. The powdered spirulina is plain; the crunchies are either plain or spicy, to which chilies and garam masala are added. Fresh spirulina -ie the compacted harvested mass prior to drying and processing- is only available directly from the Kedungu farm. It is especially delicious served as a spread or tapenade with just a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. As a committed vegan, environmentalist and health practitioner, Loik is very proud of his enterprise and gladly invites people to visit the farm where he will be happy to give you a tour of this very inspiring project. In the meantime check it out at www.balispirulina.com or the Spirulina FaceBook page. The Bali Spirulina Farm is at Jl Pantai Kedungu nr. 13, Desa Belalang in Tabanan Regency, a few kilometres north of Tanah Lot. Tel: 08123853990 Photos courtesy of Spirulina Farm

Incidentally, this 1-teaspoon serving has the nutritional equivalent of consuming 1 kg vegetables and fruits, 1 glass of milk and 3 eggs. All that without the cholesterol.

On the downside, it must be observed that spirulina is not advisable for people with iodine, seafood or seaweed allergies,

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

What does Ngiring mean? For those of you who have gone beyond Indonesian and are attempting to learn Balinese, you would have certainly heard this word a lot. Ngiring is one of the most interesting Balinese words because it is not only versatile but it explains so much about Balinese culture in the way it is used. For those of you who don’t have the ‘ng’ sound in your native language, it can be an effort in itself just to pronounce it, let alone understand all the different contexts when you can apply it. Ngiring is classified as a refined/polite word so it is part of the sor singgih vocabularly. You’ll hear the word often when somebody is leaving, to mean ‘excuse me’, as in “Ngiring, pamit dumun” (Excuse me, I’m leaving now). It also means ‘please’ as in ‘go ahead’, when you have prepared food or drink for someone and you encourage them to consume it. In this context, you can also refer to yourself helping yourself to something. Here you just use the word on its own: “Ngiring.” Ngiring also means to accompany, and is most often used in a religious context. For example, if you accompany a high priest or a sacred object (such as a ceremonial barong, known as a susuhunan), you can say, “Buin mani rage lakar ngiring Ida Susuhunan ke segara.” (Tomorrow I’m going to accompany our sacred effigy to the beach). Perhaps the most fascinating culturally speaking in terms of usage is when talking about death rites (pitra yadnya). After a person has been cremated, there is a further ceremony that purifies the spirit and to reinstate it in the family temple compound. As with a cremation ceremony, this large ceremony is costly and many families cannot afford it. There is, however, a more economical option when someone of caste dies. This person’s family can offer to their community for family members as well as others, including those not of caste to have the rituals held together at one ceremony and at one location. This is also called ngiring: to accompany the nyekah ritual of a deceased of caste. Ngiring may be a tricky one to pronounce but for sure it’s a useful one to know when talking with Balinese.

31 COSMO SALON & SPA

A NEW MANDARA SPA

I was invited to c o m e experience their newest treatment a Warm Bamboo Massage plus enjoy a body scrub prior to the massage. I was greeted by smiling friendly staff who offered me some warm ginger tea as they prepared the products for my treatment. Because it was a chilly rainy day I chose the boreh scrub to warm up my body. The therapist escorted me to a modern well-furnished treatment room with a large massage bed and shower and single bathtub behind a frosted glass wall. After undressing I lay face down on the comfortable massage table awaiting the treatment to commence. She applied the boreh paste to the back of my legs and covered them and then applied it to my back. After this she asked me to turn over and applied the paste to the front of my body and wrapped me up snuggly in a thermal blanket. Very quickly I could feel the warmth seep into my muscles. A few minutes later she opened the blanket and scrubbed off the paste. The therapist asked me to go shower off the remaining paste. A luxurious hot shower warmed up my body and cleaned off the paste. All fresh and clean I returned to the main room and lay on the massage bed ready for the massage. She reentered the room and covered my body with a sheet and asked if I was comfortable. Yes, I’m ready! A strange new sensation of light bamboo sticks gently beating over my body. It was like “wake up body” but the rhythmic beating was also soothing. Next she uncovered one of my legs and applied a little oil and immediately I felt the warm bamboo stick sliding up my leg with firm pressure. It felt similar to a hot stone massage but with the stick the pressure was stronger and flatter. After this she used her hands for massage, eliminating all the tension from my leg. Then the process was repeated on the other leg. She moved up to my back and continued using larger bamboo sticks. The warm bamboo was able to “iron” out all of the sore muscle tension from my back, shoulders and neck in a methodical manner. Because most people carry tension in their shoulders and neck she thoroughly gave these areas attention. After covering my back she gave me a very thorough head massage using a unique tool that looks like a large egg whisk with small knobs on the ends of the prongs. This was new for me. Afterwards she used her fingers to continue massaging my scalp similar to a cream bath head massage. Turning over with a cool pad covering my eyes she methodically massaged the front of my body using the warm bamboo sticks and repeating the scalp massage at the end before finishing with a gentle face massage. As a grand finale she gently beat the front of my body with the small bamboo sticks. This seventy five minute unique treatment left me feeling completely relaxed. After leisurely getting dressed I returned to the reception with smiling staff who had a tall glass of water waiting for me. My therapist asked if I had forgotten anything in the room. As I sipped on my water she showed me their spa products that

I have been going to s e v e r a l Mandara Spas over the years and seen the changes occur. Mandara Spa was founded in Bali, Indonesia in 1995 and was one of the pioneers of the tropical Asian spa style, based on natural products, tropical settings and open-air spa suites for couples. The first Mandara Spa opened in May 1996 at The Chedi (now Alila Ubud) in Ubud, Bali. In 1998, Mandara Spa formed a US based division, headquartered in Hawaii, to develop spas in Micronesia, Hawaii and the Pacific. What inspired the Mandara name? The name Mandara comes from an ancient Sanskrit legend about the gods’ quest to claim Tirta Sanjiwani – a powerful holy water that held the secret of immortality and eternal youth. The legend pitches good against evil as it tells of the ten stages of destruction and the eventual return to harmony. In this legend, Mandara Giri is a sacred mountain from which Tirta Sanjiwani flows.

This Sporting Life profiles a number of events coming up in 2017 in Bali as well as roundups of sports activities held recently. SWIMMING NEWS The 8th Bali Ocean Swim warm up for the 2017 Sea Games The annual Bali Ocean Swim held on Kuta Beach takes on added importance this year as a number of countries are using the event as a warm up for the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur in August. The 10km ocean swim is one the premier events in the swimming.A number of countries are coming to Bali with their squads to give them ocean swimming experience in preparation of the games. Now in its 8th year the Bali Ocean Swim will start as usual, from in front of the Bali Garden Hotel and Spa (Next to Discovery Mall). As well as the blue ribbon event the 10km, there is also 5 km and 1.2 km events on the day. The Bali Ocean Swim is a premier fund raising event for the Bali Sports Foundation (BSF). Overall last year 104 swimmers registered to compete over 3 distances – 1.2K, 5K and the premier event 10k. The 1.2K had 4 categories – juniors (12-17yrs) Adult (18-35yrs) Masters (36-55 yrs) and Veterans (over 55), the 5K swim has 3 categories (Junior, Adult and Masters) and the 10K event was an open event. For the first time the Bali Ocean Swim saw 5 swimmers with disabilities – 4 blind and 1 deaf swimmer compete in the 1.2K swim. Last year saw swimmers from Indonesia, Australia, USA, England, Malaysia, Singapore, UK and Japan compete. Swim Director Rodney Holt is excited by the participation of numerous swimmers in the region, “It will be interesting to see the South East Asian swimmers competing against swimmers from the traditional powerhouse Australia. With the SEA games a month afterwards, it is a final chance for some swimmers to cement their place in the squads. The gold medal won by Singaporean Joseph Golding in Rio last year, has led to increased interest in swimming in the region.” For those readers from outside the region, and not familiar with the SEA Games, apart from the swimming, in the SEA Games there are also another 38 sports, including cricket and rugby 7’s with the 10 nations of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) plus Timor-Leste competing. In the Bali Ocean Swim, all swimmers are monitored by trained professional lifeguards from the Balawista Surf Lifesaving Club who know and understand the conditions best. Entry is open to those aged 12 and above (juniors 12 -17 must have parental approval) and all monies raised go to providing swimming and water safety programs for children with disabilities. This year BSF will continue the tradition with two special trophies awarded in honour of two supporters of the Bali Ocean Swim who tragically passed away in recent history.

This Sporting Life The Barry Beardman Trophy, sponsored by Bali Garden Hotel was awarded to the best placed hotel worker and will be presented to the winner by Sherri Beardman, Barry’s widow. The Seth Richardson Trophy, in honour of a past volunteer of BSF, was awarded to the best placed swimmer with disabilities. The event raises money for BSF to fund their swimming programs for people with disabilities and support the Balawista Nippers program. Indonesia is an island archipelago yet very few people learn how to swim. Drownings are a common occurrence with the majority of people having no understanding of the inherent dangers surrounding activities near or in a water environment. However, there are many children who go against the norm and learn how to swim, show talent and skill, and develop a love for the sport and a desire to achieve excellence. Unfortunately these children are in the minority rather than the majority. World Health Organisation estimates that 2% of all preventable deaths of children in Asia are caused by drowning. In Indonesia, with a population of over

220,000,000 people, (28.4% are aged under 15yrs) this would equate to over 3,000 children each year will drown. A staggering and frightening figure, particularly when the vast majority would be preventable. In Bali, along the south coast between Seseh Beach and Nusa Dua almost 300 people are rescued by the Balawista Surf Lifesaving each year, with approximately 5% becoming a fatality statistic. Many of those rescued are Indonesians on holidays who have little or no understanding of the dangers and no experience with water awareness and/or survival techniques. Children are our most treasured asset and anything we can do to protect them or to make them safer is well worth the effort. For anyone interested to participate please check out the website www.balioceanswim.com or go to the Bali Garden Hotel and Spa in the two weeks leading up to the swim and ask at the front desk.

Many great ideas have been lost because the people who had them couldn’t stand being laughed at.

BIWA Sponsors Rumah Sehat’s Largest Healthy Day by Renee M Thorpe On Saturday May 6th, Bali International Women’s Association (BIWA), Rumah Sehat and Par 5 Golf joined together to sponsor and coordinate a temporary health clinic in Tri Buana Village (Regency of Karangasem), a remote rural community where the average income is less than $200 US per year. In 2012 Ray and Sue Bishop, were inspired to make a positive difference in the lives of the villagers in the impoverished villages of east Bali. With the help of Rotary Club Hope Island Australia, they established Rumah Sehat and have provided free health treatment to over 10,000 people as well as providing nutrition care, and vocational training at their permanent clinic, near Culik. When BIWA member and spa owner Delma Davies put her support behind Rumah Sehat by fundraising and promoting the positive difference they were making to the health of the villages, BIWA were inspired to sponsor a Healthy Day. The support base grew when PAR5 Golf, a social golfers group based in Sanur, came on board providing much needed funding for this health day and the generosity of their members continued with their motto, “Driving for better health”. Enlisting the considerable organizational skills of Rumah Sehat, which stages Healthy Days about 4 times a year and have treated over 5,000 patients in this roving clinic, this diverse group came together to successfully run the biggest healthy day staged to date. BIWA has long maintained and sponsored partnerships with many yayasans and medical facilities throughout Bali, and so Healthy Day was bolstered by an impressive array of specialists. Medical students, nurses, dentists, pharmacists and doctors in private and public practice volunteered their knowledge and services, directly treating patients who can’t afford to otherwise seek help.

The day began early with over 100 villagers arriving hours before the start time. An enthusiastic group of local

and expat volunteers, as well as a number of other charities, staffed four different venues where villagers of any age were invited to see the variety of health practitioners. This inspiring team of over 100 Indonesian health providers carried out consultations for over 600 people and provided treatment as required. Apoteks were set up to dispense free medication with prescription, and the flow of patients was helped along marvellously by the volunteering students of the Priscilla Hall Memorial Foundation vocational school.Local and expat volunteers began the day by going straight to several schools to support dentists who were teaching toothbrushing skills and to give out over 500 toothbrushes and paste that had been donated. A women’s health clinic was also running well and staffed by a team of women health workers including Yayasan Rama Sesana and Bali Pink Ribbon. Valuable women’s health talks on topics such as cervical cancer and how to give a breast self-examination were undertaken with over 40 women attending.74 Pap smears and breast examinations were undertaken; 6 patients diagnosed with cysts were referred for further treatment. Bras and beautiful hand sewn bags containing a variety of shampoo, nail clippers and brushes, toothbrushes and paste, soap and sanitary pads, were distributed to all women who attended the clinic. Gratitude was expressed to Aroma Spa, Par5 and BIWA members who donated the items.

the ongoing commitment to follow up any identified health issues requiring treatment.” Sari Richardson, BIWA President, on her way to help with a demonstration of handwashing, told the Bali Advertiser that she was delighted to see the villagers being not only supported in health care but importantly educated on healthy lifestyles and environment. Local environmental group Yayasan Peduli Alam, had a table for on-hands learning and distributed information on the dangers of burning plastic and other environmental issues and Bye Bye Plastic donated reusable shopping bags and fun books about properly and safely managing rubbish. Eco Bali provided separated trash collection baskets. Other supporters of May 6 Healthy Day included the Indonesian Sommelier Association. Goddess Bakery and Luhtuh’s Coffee Shop donated baked snacks. Nasi bungkus lunch, with environmentally friendly packaging, was provided by BIWA for all of the 100-plus local volunteers and health specialists taking part. The BIWA Board spends considerable time vetting causes to support, taking out the doubt factor that can trouble donors who want to give back in a meaningful way. As the island’s largest continually running charitable and friendship group of women, established in 1974, the organisation has much experience and knowledge of making sure every dollar raised is responsibly managed and put to good use. The major fundraiser is the famous annual bazaar, scheduled this year on Sunday, 15 October, at Lotte Mart. All the public is invited to attend and grab a bargain while supporting great causes. BIWA also welcomes women to come along to their regular monthly luncheons. The one on 29 May featured over 15 community groups joining to promote their goals and to sell their crafts and produce to help fund their great work. To book a place at upcoming luncheons, please phone Alit on 081 999 855 686.

Optometry students from Udayana University and Sanglah Hospital performed eye tests and distributed over 100 eyeglasses donated by Raise Your Glasses of Sanur. Denpasar’s Yayasan Peduli Kemanusiaan (YPK Bali) was enlisted to give hearing tests to 102 people with over 80 of them requiring treatment to remove blockages caused by insects and other debris. Figures are not in for the dental examinations and treatment, however with 3 separate areas providing care, and the chair was never empty. In all, over 1000 people benefited from this day of health care and important health education. It was the biggest Healthy Day on record. BIWA’s Social Welfare coordinator Cathy Key said, “this is all about who’s getting the care, and importantly

BIWA, Par 5 and Rumah Sehat sincerely thank everyone who assisted both on the day and in the preparation to make Tri Buana Healthy Day such a success. For those interested in sponsoring or contributing to a Healthy Day in any needy village Rumah Sehat would love to hear from interested donors – a healthy day costs approximately AUS$1500 to $2000. Local News Australian Drug Convict Schapelle Corby Returns Home from Bali Convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby arrived in Australia on Sunday after completing a twelve-anda-half-year sentence for smuggling marijuana to Indonesia, a case which received huge media attention and soured ties between the two countries. Corby landed at Brisbane International Airport with her sister Mercedes Corby and a bodyguard just after 5 a.m., Australian media reported. She did not leave the airport through the usual exit, evading a large media contingent waiting for her, before being whisked away in a black van with tinted windows. Family spokeswoman Eleanor Whitney thanked Corby’s supporters and asked for privacy. “It is with gratefulness and relief we mark Schapelle Corby’s return to Australia,” she said, reading from a statement. Corby has always maintained her innocence, saying she was unaware she was carrying more than 4 kg (8.8 lb) of marijuana in a boogie board bag when she arrived in Bali in late 2004. Her story captivated Australia, hogging headlines and prime time television for months, and initially putting strain on diplomatic ties between Australia and Indonesia. Corby’s case and that of the so-called Bali Nine, who were arrested in 2005 on charges of smuggling heroin from Indonesia into Australia had enormous resonance as a domestic political issue in Australia. Bali Nine ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were executed in 2015 and, under Indonesia’s strict drug laws, Corby could have faced the death penalty for trafficking. Indonesia’s justice system was vilified in parts of the Australian media, while the Indonesian embassy and officials were sent death threats, including bullets and a white powder in an envelope in 2005. Former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono granted Corby’s clemency plea in 2012, reducing her sentence by five years because of good behaviour. Under her parole conditions, Corby had to keep in close contact with correctional officers while living at the Bali home of her sister Mercedes, trying to stay out of the public eye as the media tracked her every move. She joined Instagram on Saturday, quickly gaining nearly 95,000 followers, and posted photos and video of her final parole meeting and chaotic scenes as she was escorted from her villa in Kuta to Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport. Peruvian Fugitive Arrested in Sumatra a Week After Escape A Peruvian fugitive has been arrested in Pekanbaru, Sumatra, a little more than a week after he escaped from custody in Bali by fleeing through a bathroom window in Denpasar court. Jose William Salazar Ortiz was reportedly secured in Pekanbaru by Denpasar Police teams on Wednesday. Ortiz had been en route to Malaysia when police apprehended him in Riau’s capital city. The Peruvian national had been using a fake Chilean passport with a name similar to his own, according to police. “He was using a Chilean identity, so not a Peruvian one. He was going on a road trip to Malaysia,” Denpasar Police Chief Hadi Purnomo said on Wednesday, as quoted by Tribun Bali. After arriving in Malaysia, Ortiz planned to return to Peru, police said. Ortiz is one of three Peruvian defendants charged with participating in a network of ATM fraud. The three were previously arrested in Jakarta in January 2017, then taken to Denpasar for further legal processing since their alleged crimes mostly took place in Bali. Prosecutors recommended Ortiz get seven years jail time over the ATM fraud case. [Coconuts Bali May 24, 2017] Highway Expert Warns Underpass Planned at Bali Airport Entrance is a Bad Idea

15-year-old Boy Suffers Self-Inflicted Stab Wound While Dancing in a Trance Dance

While central government and provincial officials in Bali are in a rush to commence the construction of a new underpass at the entrance to Bali’s airport before a major meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank set for October 2018, land acquisition and a number of controversial issues may still delay the project.

Putu Pande Kusuma Jana, a 15-year-old boy from the village of Sumberkelampok in Buleleng, North Bali is a patient at the General Hospital in Negara recovering from a self-inflicted stab wound to the chest. Metrobali.com reports that the junior high school student stabbed himself while performing a traditional dance near Gilimanuk, West Bali. A number of dances in the traditional Balinese dance repertoire have segments in which male dancers in a state of trance remain impervious to injury despite pushing traditional swords into their thoraxes with great force.

Beritabali.com reports that Susalit Alius, an expert on highway planning and construction, is warning that the proposal to build the underpass is not viable, full of unforseen risk and requires more thorough examination. “In my opinion, I think it is very risky because of a large number of high power lines and pipelines carrying aviation fuel in the area. The building of the underpass should not be permitted and I am sure a feasibility study has not been done. I suggest that a bypass or a flyover be constructed (instead),” said Susalit.

Made Arjana (33), Pande’s father, explained that his son was injured while performing the Ngiringan Sesuunan Dewa Ayu trance dance on Friday, May 26, 2017, at 9:00 pm. The dance was part of a cleansing ceremony (Upacara Pecaruan) of a neighbor’s house. After suffering the wound, Pande was rushed to a local public health center in Gilimanuk where he was referred to the General Hospital in Negara for further treatment. [www.balidiscovery.com May 28, 2017]

Susalit said the alternative option of a flyover or bypass at the airport’s entrance would prove safer and substantially less expensive to build than the planned underpass. “All that remains to be done,” said Susalit, “is to determine if local customs and traditions might be violated by building a flyover. This requires a sit-down meeting with community, religious and traditional leaders. In any event, Bali needs to modernize its road construction while at the same time preserving Balinese custom and traditions,”

Prosecutor Rules Out Appealing Sara Connor’s Sentence to Supreme Court Sara Connor can finally rest easy that her five-year sentence for the fatal group assault of a Bali police officer will not be increased again after the prosecution ruled out one last appeal. A scared-looking Connor had already told Denpasar District Court clerk Nengah Sanjaya last week: “I don’t want to appeal, I don’t want to appeal,” after the High Court increased her sentence from four to five years. Now the prosecution has also decided against a final appeal to Indonesia’s highest court - the Supreme Court. The conclusion of the court proceedings will mean that Connor can start to accrue remissions to her sentence on Independence Day and religious holidays. The new found certainty may also mean her two young sons, whom Connor has not seen since an ill-fated holiday to Bali last August, could visit her. [Sydney Morning Herald May 29, 2017]

Manitoba Woman Breaks Her Back in Bicycle Crash in Indonesia A Manitoba woman is in a hospital on the Indonesian island of Bali with serious injuries after what is being described as a freak bicycle accident in a remote area this past weekend. Tiffany Green was in the country taking a yoga training course and had stayed a few extra days for short vacation. She was out on a bike ride Saturday afternoon when she crashed in a remote area, good friend Christopher Schneider said. “Apparently she was riding her bicycle and it accelerated very quickly around a corner and she was unable to stop,” Schneider said. “She fell off and she broke her back. Two of her vertebrae ... also her scapula as well.” “Luckily there were some people that came across her on the side of the road that wanted to help her and got her to a hospital,” he said. Schneider, who has spoken with Green said she has been at the hospital since then, and is in a lot of pain. “I was feeling, of course, very helpless,” he said. “I care about her very much.” Green was in the country alone at the time of the accident, he said, but friends she made made while she was there are by her side. Her twin sister, Tara, is preparing to head to Bali to be with her, a family member said. Green was set to return home from Bali in just a few days. [CBC News May 23, 2017]

Police Arrest Four Snatch and Run Thieves in Kuta, Shooting One Suspect A group of snatch and run thieves operating on Jalan Kayu Aya Gang Wirasaba area in Seminyak and targeting tourists have been arrested by police in Kuta, Bali on Saturday, May 20, 2105. Beritabali.com reports that police have taken into custody a gang of four thieves, with one of the four shot in the leg at the time of his arrest when he allegedly fought the arresting officers. The four men now in police custody are: Mohamad Abidin alias Bereng (29) from Malang who stays on Jalan Bekisar Pemogan, South Denpasar; I Made Sucita alias Gonjak (26) from Banjar Asah in the Village of Datah, Abang, Karangasem staying on Jalan Kargo Sari No. 8, West Denpasar; I Made Sudarma (40) also from the Village of Datah staying on Jalan Tukad Ciliwung II No. 14, Panjer, Denpasar; and I Nyoman Putu Suardana (39) also form the village of Datah staying at Jalan Kargo Sari No. 8, West Denpasar. The arrest of the four occurred after their latest victim, Erica Rini Pujiastuti (30), living in the Kerobokan area of Bali was attacked by the group at 2:30 am on Saturday, May 20, 2017, near Jalan Kayu Aya in Seminyak. The woman told police how two men, one of whom drew a knife and stabbed her, approached her. Based on information provided by the victim, police started a search for the two men. With the assistance of a taxi driver who saw the robbery, police managed to arrest Mohamad Abidin who provided information that led to the arrest of the remaining three men in various locations. The suspect, named Gonjak, was arrested at his home on Jalan Kargo Sari No. 8 in West Denpasar. Police shot the man in the leg when he allegedly resisted arrest. Police say all four men admitted to at least five robberies on Jalan Kayu Aya in Seminyak. Gonjak, seen by police as the ringleader, also admitted to robberies in other locations assisted by friends driving motorcycles. At the time of their arrest, police confiscated evidence in the form of a wallet, an iPhone, several ATM cards, the registration certificate for a Honda Beat motorcycle and Rp. 86,000 in cash. [www.balidiscovery.com May 28, 2017]

Susalit is the former head of road construction and highway planning for Bali, Nusa Tenggara Barat, and Nusa Tenggara Timor. During his tenure in office, he supervised the construction of the Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra and the Bali’s first underpass at the Dewa Ruci Monument in Kuta. The Central Government in Jakarta has allocated Rp. 209.7 billion rupiah to pay for the new underpass at the entrance to Bali’s only international airport. Under the development program, the Province of Bali must acquire and contribute the land needed for the road project that will result in an underpass that is 712-meters long and 17-meters wide. Provincial officials recently announced that an unspecified amount of the officially protected mangrove forest that borders the area will be sacrificed to build the new roadway. [www.balidiscovery.com May 26, 2017] Lion Air Pilot Flying Bali – Jakarta Invites Wife and Child to Fly in Cockpit Kompas.com reports that a Lion Air Passenger, Citra Rienanti, posted to her Facebook page her experience while flying on Lion Air JT 015 from Bali to Jakarta on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, relating how she saw a woman and her small child enter the cockpit of the aircraft. Rienanti related how she saw a stewardess give a sign to the woman and child estimated to be 3 years old sitting in seats 1F and 1E that they could leave their seats and enter the cockpit. The news spread quickly on social media causing Lion Air management to say they would investigate the case and take appropriate action. Citra wrote how, while traveling with her husband, she became increasingly suspicious when the woman and child did not return to their seats. Concerned that unauthorized passengers were in the cockpit in clear violation of international safety standards, the Facebook user even checked the toilets to confirm the “missing” passengers were not inside. Citra then questioned one of the stewardesses working on the flight, who after trying initially to evade giving any answer, eventually revealed that the woman accompanied by her child entered the cockpit to meet her husband who was the pilot of the aircraft. Citra then asked if it was permissible for any passenger to enter the cockpit area, pointing to a sign that stated no passengers are allowed in the cockpit after take-off. Tempo.co and other media identified the Captain of the flight as Christophus Dimas Rio Atria. Subsequently, the pilot’s wife reportedly had a boisterous verbal altercation with Citra, telling her essentially “to mind her own business.” On her Facebook page, Citra posted photos of the empty seats and a video of the pilot’s wife and child. Lion Air has sent a message to Citra Rienanti apologizing for the incident, thanking her for her report and assuring the matter would be thoroughly investigated. Lion Air also affirmed that no passengers are ever allowed in the cockpit during a flight and if it was determined the pilot was at fault, he would face stern sanctions from the Airline. A subsequent report on Detik.com reported that the unnamed captain has been grounded pending a full investigation by air safety officials. [www.balidiscovery.com May 28, 2017]
