Petitenget to Pererenan If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you!
Celebrate 20 Years of Business with 20 Dives AquaMarine Diving – Bali (PADI 5 Star Dive Resort 6344) is proud to announce its twentieth year of operation as the only British owneroperated dive centre in Bali. In an era when dive centres come and go, AquaMarine has achieved two decades of dedication and steady growth in the diving industry. AMD-Bali focuses entirely on diving – Dive Safaris (diving and accommodation packages), Day Dive Trips, and PADI courses. It is one of the few dive centres in Bali that is totally dedicated to diving! The company will commemorate the occasion with a number of special offers and promotional events throughout the coming year. Founded and operated since 1999 by Annabel Thomas, AquaMarine focuses on providing high quality service and the best possible diving for guests, offering programmes to suit each diver’s interests, experience and preferences. Attention to detail is a hallmark of the AquaMarine experience. Although the company has experienced growth over the years, this has never been at the expense of personalised service. Annabel’s concept was to plan dive trips the likes of which she would want to experience as a visiting diver to Bali, and this philosophy of individual attention continues today. To mark this massive anniversary, AquaMarine is offering an amazing special: 6 Days of Diving / 20 Dives / 6 Nights of Accommodation – a 20 dives safari for their twentieth year in operation! This “Twenty Dives Safari” package offers a taste of what Bali has to offer in terms of

This particular package is suitable for beginner to experienced divers – ideal for Underwater Photography enthusiasts! If you would like to take up this offer, remember that by midJuly the Mola-Mola (Ocean sunfish) Season will be in full swing! A Christmas Feast Fit For a King @ Finns
Believe it or not, the faint sound of jingling bells is getting louder and I’m pretty sure the decorations are already creeping onto the shelves at Ace Hardware. Yep! Silly Season is approaching faster than you can fill your champagne flute. A little over two months away in fact and with the constant stream of invitations for end of year parties poised to shift into top gear, Tuesday 25th of December will arrive in record time. December in Bali is never a great time to be standing over your oven tending to the turkey so avoid the stress and let Finns take care of all of the festive details this year. Christmas is a family affair so it makes Silly Season sense to book the whole clan into Finns Recreation Club come December 25th and celebrate with their long and lazy six hour Christmas Day Buffet Lunch from 11am until 5pm. That’s a lot of time to talk turkey! In keeping with Christmas tradition, Finns once again invite the children from the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage to share the day, one of the highlights being their Christmas carol performance
before they receive some special Christmas gifts courtesy of generous club members. Following on from previous years, the Jodie O’Shea Wishing Tree will appear front and centre in Finns foyer from December 1st, decorated uniquely with tags depicting pictures of each of the children at the orphanage along with suggestions pertaining to something they might wish to receive for Christmas. In the lead up to December 25th, Finns members and guests are invited to choose one or more of these tags and buy a gift for that child. The presents can be dropped at Finns Recreation Club and then distributed to the children come Christmas Day. Some jolly dude with a red suit and sleigh is set to make an appearance (you’re never too old for Santa) with presents for all. Finns is laying out a festive spread fit for a king with gourmet selections from sandwiches, salads, the carvery and grill, appetisers, pastas, fresh baked breads and the best display of Christmas desserts to destroy any diet.
Let’s be honest, the kids will need all that sugar fuelled energy for the slides at Splash while big kids indulge in liquid fun of the French persuasion with Finns two for one offer on Moet & Chandon. What’s Christmas without bubbles I say! With air conditioned or outdoor seating available, guests can opt for the Lunch and Splash package for IDR 950K per adult and IDR480K per child. Even if you choose the lunch only option at just IDR600K per adult and a tiny IDR250 per child (3 12 years) there’ll be more than enough to entertain the fam bam for the entire afternoon with slip n slide, Zorbs and festively themed fun for every elf. Don’t forget, Santa’s helpers under the age of three eat for free! Celebrating the festive season at Finns is always a popular choice and with places limited, be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment or you might find yourself as red faced as Rudolph’s nose if you miss out on a table at this year’s Christmas Day Buffet Lunch! Book today @ finnsrececlub.com or Reception.
It’s Game On in November for the Bali Open Tennis Tournament after party from 4pm following the finals and presentations. In between matches, be sure to pop out to the Bazaar located in the Tennis Centre carpark - a showcase for match sponsors and a chance to do a spot of shopping. The Bali Open is accessible for all island residents, expatriates, students and visitors with registration starting from IDR250,000. Even if you don’t remotely resemble Rafa or Serena with your racquet skills you can still experience the thrill of the Bali Open by becoming an event sponsor or by showing your support as a spectator.
Tighten those racquet strings and strap on your sweat bands because it’s about time to gear up for one of the island’s biggest tennis tourneys to date! Nine consecutive competition days, four categories and a whopping 23 events make up the inaugural Bali Open Tennis Tournament and you can see all of the action on court as it happens at the Tennis Centre at Finns Recreation Club from the 17th to the 25th of November, 2018. With four different categories including Open, Advanced, Amateur and Junior, the competition offers an opportunity for tennis players of all levels to showcase their skills on court at one of the island’s best tennis facilities and compete for the titles in men’s, women’s, mixed doubles or junior competitions. And the prizes aren’t too shabby either! Cash prizes will be awarded to all winners in the Open categories with trophies and a selection of gifts going to front runners in all other divisions.
For all the details about how you can be a part of Bali’s biggest open tennis tournament at Finns, please visit match fit, honing your racquet skills, competing against (and www.finnsrecclub.com or contact reception at Finns watching) some of the best of Bali’s tennis players, along with a Recreation Club (contacts below). Spots are limited so enjoy all the on-court excitement of this year’s Bali Open and register few international imports! your interest today. The nine day event commences with a pre-tournament party on the evening of November 16 with the opening rounds of the competition kicking off from 9am the following day. (Match tip for those who draw any first round fixtures, go easy on those cocktails!!!)
The next week will see progressive rounds in all categories leading up to the quarter finals on November 23rd. Games will be scheduled during the day as well as in the evenings in an effort to encourage spectator support and beat the Bali heat with the excitement really hotting up for finals weekend on November 24th and 25th. Players, sponsors and spectators will then be invited to wind down and wax lyrical about the competition But it’s not just about the trophy, the Bali Open is about getting week and enjoy some post tournament entertainment at the

Ed i b l e Trop i cal G ard ens ‘ Hi Kris, I ’ ve had a terrib le time trying to grow salad greens for the kitchen. T he few plants that did survive the onslaught of bugs and pests soon oundered in the heat. I am starting to reconsider if it’ s even worth trying or perhaps trying something different, or growing in the wet season? T he prob lem is I don’ t know where to start and I am unsure of what to try… any ideas? I would j ust like to grow some edib le plants to supplement my diet as part of a healthy lifestyle that I can eat fresh or cooked. T hanks in advance for any suggestions, W arren’ Growing traditional v e g e ta b l e s s u i t e d to a temperate c limate in the tropi c s i s more than a ch alleng e - aki n to a snowa es chance in hell D uring the tropic al wet/dry seasons the cl imate is either too hot, or there’ s too much rain and humidity or otherwise there’ s not enoug h. And then if you c an somehow suc c essfully navig ate the c limate there are a seeming ly inexh austible supply of bug s and sap sucke rs to deal with that love this new exo tic food you’ ve broug ht into their environment. So e lants that e ould all li e to gro such as cauli o er cabbage broccoli or lettuce for exa mple simply won’ t withstand the heat. Even g rowing these in a temperate summer cli ate ould fail and run to seed on the first hot day eaning all inter season cro s are out of co nsideration here in the tropics. S o then, what about summer season veg etables? Well the heat c ertainly won’ t be a problem. I t is possible to g row many types of what we would c onsider summer veg etables in temperate cl imes – but for the most part it is possible only in the dry season. Avoid the wet season as the hig h humidity ca uses all sorts of problems usually staring with mildew and ending in fung us. Y our options are limited to g rowing traditional summer cr ops in the dry season only. Here are some suggestions. T omatoes will g row well during the dry season. P ersonally, I would opt for ch erry/g rape to ato arieties only. They see to be the hardiest ost rolific est resistant to atoes that I kn ow of. What’ s the point of g rowing your own if you have to spray fung ici de and
pestici de poison all over the place . Eg g plants, c hillies and pepper/c apsic ums will all g row well no matter how hot it g ets. S nak e beans gro ell too the local ar ets are often o er o ing ith the . Asian greens such as bok c hoi, pak c hoi are possible, as well as Chinese c abbag e or wombok but will probably benefit fro so e rotection fro the hottest art of the day. So e arieties of ale ay strug g le due to the heat. D on’ t even bother with broc c oli or traditional c abbag e, and hearting lettuce varieties are out too. I f you really must try lettuce g row an open leaf variety such as oak leaf. R adishes will do well, plant from seed and they will g erminate in a matter of days, you c ould be pulling them up within 3-4 weeks. T hey love the heat, and they are versatile. R adishes are best picke d smaller and sooner rather than larg er and later. T he larg er, the more bland they beco me - they lose their peppery zing . Y et on the other hand if you let them g o you ca n just ke ep picki ng the leaves for use in salads and soups, and just forg et about the har esting the root. The lea es ha e a e ery a our uch li e arugula. After a fe onths un ic ed radishes ill o er and run to seed at hich oint you can har est the seed pods or ‘ radish peas’ as I like to ca ll them. T hey are g reen and juicy , eat them raw straig ht off the plant or add to salads for a peppery cr unch - tastes just like root yet the novelty of snacki ng on juicy bite-sized radish peas never wears off. Beetroot is another root cr op that will also perform well in the dry season and just like the radishes you can ic the lea es and add the to salads. S rin le so e uffy dandelion seed around the g arden and perhaps g row some nasturtium, both of which which will take ca re of themselves and you now have a g ood mix of salad g reens incl uding the radish and beetroot. Even better they are all hardy, relatively pest resistant, full of vitamins and minerals and will taste just as g ood if not better than any traditional leafy veg etable once tossed and dressed. D andelion and nasturtium are usually co nsidered weeds but they’ re the types of plants I want to g row, the ones that g row themselves. I f you ca n ch ang e your perspect ive, you ill rea the re ards R eally, the easiest way to g row your own food in the tropics is by g rowing tropica l fruit and egetable arieties that are suited to the cli ate - as they say . hen in Ro e S tart with tropic al edibles that are at home in the heat and humidity. L emong rass, c ardamom, turmeric, g ing er, g alang al, T hai basil and V ietnamese mint for starters. V eg etables will take off once the humidity hits. S weet potato, bitter melon, ka ng ko ng /water spinach , amaranth/mustard g reens and rocke t/arug ula all g row well. S tarch y tubers g row well in hot and humid summers, think taro or c assava otherwise k nown loc ally as ‘ sing k ong ’ . I often see ca ssava thriving on dusty roadsides. T he ca ssava leaf or ‘ daun sing ko ng ’ is a mainstay of ‘ nasi padang ’ and other cu rries, just be ca reful to co ok it properly and never eat it raw as it ca n be toxi c if prepared inco rrect ly. Choko s/ch ayote which g rows on a vine is another versatile veg etable that g oes down well in a cu rry, the fresh vine shoots ca n be added to stir fry’ s and cu rries. P apaya is a tree that you ca n g row q uickl y from seed, potentially bearing fruit within a year of planting . Green papaya is popular as a veg etable in salads, or ‘ rujak’ . P apaya juice is g reat, the seeds and leaves have multiple medici nal uses when infused as teas or even co oke d and eaten. T he seeds ca n even be dried and used as a pepper substitute.
NEED
INTERNET ACCESS ???
Edible g ardeners in the temperate reg ions lament the fact that they don’ t have the cl imate for g rowing exci ting exo tic edible plants such as g ing er, g alang al, turmeric, sweet potato or a aya but here in the tro ics e ha e this fantastic o ortunity It really a es to atoes ca bbag es and brocco li seem bland and boring , and that’ s without even discu ssing the possibilities with the plethora of fruits trees and vines available - now that’ s a topic for another day Whatever you deci de on, always plant in a free draining soil for best results, ka ng ko ng / water spinach being the only exce ption. Good L uck.

Letters To Bali Advertiser Cremation Attire Dear Sir, It has become apparent that some people are not exactly “up” on what is acceptable attire when viewing, and in a lot of cases intruding on, a Hindu cremation ceremony, in Pantai Karang. I often wonder what these observers would think it strangers in swimming togs or shorts and T shirts wandered into the ceremony that you were having for your departed loved one and took photos of the body and surrounding attendees, all of whom are dressed in a culturally respective manner. The Balinese do not say anything about this disrespectful attire and their attendance in such close quarters to the body, but you can bet they think it. So, if you are wanting to view this amazing ceremony, please, do not enter the general area. Stay away from the area surrounding the body and the immediate family, and do not go and take photos of the body and the attendees inside the cremation area. There are areas outside that afford a view of this activity if you are wanting to take photos of a person whom you do not know, being cremated in a cultural and ancient tradition.
C/Ho/I-26 Sept 18
I recently attended a cremation, dressed culturally, and the family and us ex-pats were distraught at losing such a wonderful friend, father, husband, grandfather, brother, uncle and all around wonderful man . It is a very sad time for the immediate family and close friends, and having strangers wandering around taking photos is just “not on”.
l l
So, please, this is Bali and it is a tropical island and it is beautiful, but it has its long held traditions and beliefs, which draws millions to this paradise every year, be mindful of your attire. So please, do not intrude on a cremation ceremony unless you are part of it.

Have a lovely day.

16 Bali’s Welfare Organizations Give Hope by Anita to the Island’s Cats and Dogs While the two most well-known animal welfare organizations on the island are the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) and the Bali Adoption and Rehabilitation Centre (BARC), there are many other nonprofits working tirelessly to improve the quality of life of Bali’s dogs and cats. All rely heavily on donations to keep afloat. Have some spare funds? Here is a number of worthwhile organizations that are always on the look-out for financial support to create a better environment for the island’s canine and feline residents.
Bali Pet Crusaders - http://www.balipetcrusaders.org/ According to Bali Pet Crusaders, “one female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in just six years [and] one female cat and her offspring can produce 370,000 kittens in seven years.” This number is staggering, particularly considering the number of strays already roaming the island. This is to some extent because many animals in Bali do not have an owner in the Western sense of the word (rather they belong to a store or a family who feed them from time to time). And even if the pet is actively looked after, for many Balinese getting their pet neutered is simply unaffordable. Bali Pet Crusaders is trying to turn this situation around by providing affordable sterilization for the island’s dogs and cats. The Australia-registered charity regularly sends a team of vets to various areas of the island to provide a mobile sterilization service. The organization sterilizes between 200 and 300 dogs and cats per month, and since its inception has neutered over 9,500 dogs and cats.
Villa Kitty Foundation - https://villakitty.com/ The first thing that strikes you when you find yourself at Villa Kitty is the sheer number of designated areas occupied by mousers of different sizes and colors. From the Retirement Village for older cats and the West Village where the younger cats await their new families to the outdoor Playground Bale for the more adventurous and active felines, the shelter provides comfortable lodgings for a variety of cats, and, yes, also a number of dogs.
mission is possible,” this non-profit has set up a community of like-minded individuals who work together to help save sick, injured or abandoned dogs and cats. Besides supporting solo rescuers who rehabilitate and rehome animals, Mission Paws’ible educates people about the importance of vaccinations and sterilization.
There is even a nursery for the youngest of the shelter’s residents. Villa Kitty provides both safe lodgings and emergency services for injured cats, as well as cat adoption and foster programs (some kittens need a temporary home away from the shelter while they build up immunity). The shelter also facilitates education programs to teach children about responsible pet ownership. Plus, the colorful and bustling village is open to visitors who are always greeted with play time and plenty of cuddles.
The Bali Dog Halfway House - http://www. thebalidoghalfwayhouse.com/ The Bali Dog Halfway House has been set up by the island’s dog rescuers to provide temporary lodgings for stray dogs awaiting adoption. Most of the shelter’s residents have not had an easy life, but here they can find much-deserved safety and 24-hour care. The canines receive weekly visits from a vet who vaccinates and sterilizes them. They are also socialized with other dogs and given a basic obedience training to maximize their chance of adoption. While at the moment it is mostly the rescuers who cover the boarding cost, the shelter’s goal is to raise enough funds from public donations to let rescuers focus on what they do best-rescuing and rehoming dogs. For just AUD$30 a month, dog-lovers can sponsor one of the shelter’s tail-waggers and receive regular updates about their Bali fur baby (take a look at the dog profiles on the charity’s website). The donations are used to cover the cost of food, medical care, utilities and employee wages. For those not comfortable with cash donations, the Bali Dog Halfway House is also in need of dog food, blankets, toys, building supplies and furniture.
The organization also actively promotes dogs that are ready for adoption through the word of mouth and on social media, and mobilizes its network of foster families to provide temporary homes for dogs and puppies. To support Mission Paws’ible make a general donation, pledge to support a specific animal or purchase a product from its online store.
Bali Rescue Dog Squad - http://balirescuedogsquad.com/ The Bali Rescue Dog Squad runs two safe houses that accommodate up to 20 rescue dogs during treatment and rehabilitation. Set up in 2017, the operation is funded by donations and sponsorships. While the safe houses are not open to the public, they can be viewed by appointment. Alternatively, Bali Rescue Dog Squad is always on the lookout for volunteers in areas such as administration, fundraising, social media, graphic design, videography and general dog care.
Mission Paws’ible - https://missionpawsible.org/ Established in 2015, Mission Paws’ible helped to rehabilitate and rehome over 150 animals in its first year of operations. Built on the philosophy that “every rescue

Steve Cran: Permaculture or Armageddon S teve Cran is the g uy you want to have around after an earthq uake or volca nic eruption. Born and bred in northern Q ueensland, S teve is a teac her, soci al act ivist and cl imate ch ang e resilience speci alist. With a 2 8year ca reer in permacu lture, he has developed effect ive, sustainable, reco very solutions for co mmunities affect ed by war, long -term poverty or natural disasters. Currently, S teve is building a network of er aculture field schools in the Phili ines and Malaysia to train hands-on field s ecialists effecti e trainers who ca n g uide co nce rned g roups that wish to do something tang ible to mitig ate the effect s of looming cl imate ch ang e. W h at are th e most dramatic environmental ch ang es th at y ou’ ve witnessed since your first visit to Bali? I first isited in 2 2 on a brea fro doing aid or in East Ti or. Bac then touris as running at a sustainable level and the island’ s eco nomy seemed an ideal mix between tourism, ag ricu lture and Balinese cu lture. Now the tourist population has exp loded and land that once g rew rice and co c onuts now g rows villas like mushrooms. Both the level of touris and consu tion has risen ell abo e a sustainable le el. Traffic has co e to a standstill in co ng ested villag es and loca l people are enslaved into some aspect of the tourism industry at the exp ense of their cu ltural ways. An insane amount of rubbish and waste is g enerated from too many people jammed into one small island. Health is already deca ying in some areas from too much air pollution. Waterways and ca tch ment areas are also co ntaminated from pollution and ch emica l runoff from unsustainable ag ricu ltural pract ice s. L ong -term residents will be paying the price with their health shortly. In what unexpected ways has climate change already affected Bali? The latest science sho s that our lanet is gro ing in si e. Cli ate change is bringing a g rowth spurt to not only Earth but also all the planets in our solar system. As our Earth exp ands, the volc anic act ion incr eases and new land is formed from the lava and materials that spew out of act ive volca nos. Mt Ag ung is now act ive ag ain and this will surely affect Bali.
What simple measures can residents take to help Bali make the transition to sustainability? The best thing Balinese can do is eet at a co unity le el and build resilience into the neighborhoods. Peo le ha e ore o er hen they or together to ensure local food security. One lo cost easure is to create All eather Gardens (A G) in neig hborhoods by erect ing a g reenhouse roof or poly-ca rb roof over g ardens to make the g arden resilient to heavy rains and other events that ca n smash the plants. How serious is the scarcity of clean drinking water? Bali’ s supply of cl ean water will be under threat in the foreseeable future. Water q uality is dropping as ag ricu ltural ch emica ls and pollution co ntaminate the once pristine fresh water supplies of the island. Would any of us drink from the water in the S ubak? L ook at the q uality of the seawater off the beach es of Bali. A switch to org anic farming would be a g ood start. If nothing is going to be done, what calamities will Bali face? I f nothing is done on a larg e sca le to mitig ate erratic weather, droug hts, sea-level-rises, higher te eratures oods and landslides co ing at Bali right no then e ill see assi e o ulation shifts as eo le in cities and to ns ee disaster en asse. here ill they ee to Blind Freddy can see that e tre e easures are called for to create resilience in the face of the ch ang es co ming upon us. Governments move too slowly, so eo le ust ta e action. The co bined energy of hu ans ith a single ur ose can be an awesome positive force !

Is Bali’s population vulnerable to the effects of climate change? ith olcanic action co es increased earth ua es in fre uency and si e. All the countries around the R ing of Fire are exp erienci ng earthq uake s and volca nic act ivity at present. Bali ust re are for the orst and ho e for the best. Touris is only a recent heno enon in the scale of things. Peo le ill co e to Bali if they feel it is a safe aradise. Of course if they fear being c aug ht in a volca no disaster, the tourists will dry up instantly. We saw this hen the first Bali bo b ent off stalling touris for a cou le of years. Bali ould be wise to have a fallback plan when tourists no long er co me due to cl imate ch ang e fear. Is the island’s food security also threatened? Bali’ s food supply and its very exi stence are threatened by ong oing events in our world right no . This ill get orse before it gets better. Far ers should build greenhouses to produce part of their cr ops in safety despite what the weather does. S ome ag ricu lture will ha e to be done indoors as a res onse to cli ate change e ents. There s also no q uestion that the island’ s water supply is under ever incr easing pressure to support an unsustainable level of urban population. D o th e provincial and national g overnments h ave th e political will to adopt th e necessary measures to combat climate change?

Go ern ents are reacti e not roacti e. Peo le ha e little confidence in the go ern ents of most co untries these days. We have “ fake news” and soon the term “ fake g overnment” will be used to descr ibe our so-c alled leaders. I doubt the g overnment here will do much to change the current situation. It s al ays too little too late. To co bat the changes in cl imate, the g overnment needs to cr eate a workf orce to co nstruct disaster mitig ation ro ects across the island. This could be a outh Cor s or so e ind of conscri tion lan to obili e a legion of eo le to build the buffer syste s needed for Bali to sur i e hat s co ming . R eplanting forests and restoring natural systems should take priority over touris de elo ents today not to orro . Perha s Bali could de elo eco-restoration tourism as a solution. Is permaculture a way to save Bali? Per aculture is a great toolbo for a o ulation so e eryone at all le els of society can partici pate in the restoration of the eco systems that will be the buffer for cl imate ch ang e events. Everyone must take responsibility and act ion. Food secu rity co uld be g uaranteed ith cle er design. Together a o ulation can a e a big difference if they can only see what’ s happening .

When the US invaded Indonesia... It was the Pepper that made them do it
Given the the multi-polar way the world is g oing , it is probably just as well that I ndonesia’ s P resident Jok awi wants to rec laim the maritime g reatness of 10th c entury S rivijaya. What with China, not c ontent with laying c laim to the entire S outh China S ea and all that lies beneath see ing to o erturn US na al do inance in the est Pacific e also ha e the Russian Far Eastern Fleet a ing its re-a earance in the Pacific not to mention naval build-up by reg ional powers, Japan, I ndia and Australia. Alas, rather than an I ndonesian led AS EAN maritime S rivijayan style c onfederation do inating the inner seas bet een the Indian and Pacific oceans e are ore li ely to see a return to the situation prevailing in the early 19 th c entury. Bac k then, when the navies of the major c olonial and trading nations of Europe, plus an ag g resive new player in the non-c olonial but already imperial U nited S tates of Americ a, held sway over Asian waters. Even before the California g old rush of 1844, having barely reac hed its Western shores, the new republic had set its heart on ex tending its manifest destiny to the Asian shores of the Pacific Ocean. T he only players missing at the time were the historic Asian powers, I ndia and China. Countries hose co erce and cultural in uence do inated Southeast Asia for a thousand years until the mid 16th Century and who, with no hope of matc hing Western naval supremac y , had no alternative but ac c ept a g reatly diminished and prog ressively subservient role over the past 45 0 years.

Meantime the D utc h used the inc ident as an ex c use to attac k and annex parts of Ac eh. A year later the P otomac arrived off Kuala Batuto ex ac t veng eanc e and bombarded the to n attening its defenses and landing 2 2 arines ho illed o er inhabitants and plundered the town . T he P otomac then warned that worse would follow if other U S c itizens were attac k ed and sailed away. The trouble ith Kuala Batu ere not o er ho e er. Si years later in 1 another US merc hantman the Ec lipse was boarded and the entire c rew murdered. T he response was rapid. I f the pepper trade was no long er what it was, the Americ an c onq uest of the Pacific as in full s ate. The ne t hot co odity as guano hich allo ed the US to declare that any uninhabited Pacific attoll could be anne ed by the US if they chose and they did. By 189 8, with Guam,S amoa and Hawaii and dozens of other islands already poc k eted the U S took possession of the P hilippines in a short war ag ainst S pain. I n a remark ably fe decades the Pacific had beco e an A erican la e. An achie e ent ratified by ictory in the Pacific ar 19 1- . Econo ic but not so uch colonial or territorial imperialists, the U S now c onfronts a China determined push the U S navy bac k to Hawaii, if not S an D ieg o and that China, not the U S , is the indispensible nation when it c omes to East and S outheast Asia. Better than this, the sc enario whereby I ndonesia leads a latterday ‘ S rivijayan’ leag ue throug hout the ‘ Malay Barrier‘ ensuring peac e and free passag e between the I ndian and Pacific oceans is attracti e. And not an i ossible at that gi en the international support that would be forthc oming ; and, if the snare and illusion of enric hment afforded by China’ s maritime & Eurasian silk roads c an be resisted by the reg ion’ s leaders.

Clearly that is not how thing s are g oing to play out in the 2 1st c entury. T he fac t that the U S invaded towns in the sultanate of Ac eh in S umatra on the I ndian Ocean coast not once but t ice in the early 19th century in 1 2 and again 1 is mostly forg otten. T he q uestion is, why would the U S P resident of the day, Andrew Jac k son, feel the need to send Americ an warships halfway ac ross the world to bombard and send in the marines to k ill larg e numbers of Ac ehnese in a matter of days and then sail away? T he answer lies not just in the ag ressive nature of Andrew Jac k son but in the relig ious and ec onomic Y ank ee zeal of New Eng landers, their ex perienc e of ships and the sea, and to the East I ndian spic e trade, most partic ularly pepper. While Britain’ s R oyal Navy ruled the waves that did not apply when it c ame to Y ank ee privateers, who as often bested British frig ates and were far too fast to be c aug ht by ships of the line. T he stag e was set for the rapid development of a Y ank ee merc hant arine. By 1 the ar on schooners sloo s and fast cli ers sli high- asted vessels built for speed and hig h value c arg o, set sail from the New Eng land ports bound for the Orient. They traded A erican sal on codfish tobacco snuff our soa candles butter, c heese, beef and barrel staves for all the treasures of the I ndies - tea, c offee, silks, indig o and spic es ( pepper, ca ssia, cl oves, ci nnamon, nutmeg and g ing er) . En route for Cape Horn there was bartering for sug ar and rum in the West I ndies. T he most remunerative trade of all was pepper. In 1 9 a ere do en years after inde endence the first successful co ercial e per voyag e from S alem was c ompleted by the 12 0-ton sc hooner “ R ajah” , leaving in sec ret for ports unk nown, returning eig hteen months later with a full c arg o of bulk pepper tak en on at Benc oolen in southwestern S umatra. From this one voyag e the ship’ s o ners ade a rofit of than s to the s ill and cunning of shi aster Ca t. Johnathan Carnes, on the dang erous 2 6,000-mile voyag e. He manag ed to buy larg e amounts of pepper c heaply from the native rulers of c oastal of S umatra , avoiding the hig h pric es c harg ed by the D utc h merc hants for small q uantities of the spic e and avoid the assaults of Malay pirates. T he suc c ess of the R ajah inspired other S alem merc hants to enter the trade and by 1810 S alem had bec ome the world’ s pepper c apital. I n 1806 the larg est sing le pepper c arg o on rec ord entered S alem when the Eliza, a vessel of 5 12 tons unloaded over a million lbs ( 5 00 tons) . IT’S MOVEMBER! Prostate Cancer Awareness Month I t is easy to forget ab out health screening while we live in a tropical b ub b le. R egular health screening reminders which are part of everyday media in developed countries, can easily b e forgotten when you live far from the madding crowd. W omen, for some reason, seem to ab le to keep on top of it a little more than men do.
S everal studies have indic ated that perhaps about 80% of all men in their eig hties had prostate c anc er when they died, but nobody k new, not even the doc tor. D uring the early stag es of prostate c anc er there are usually no symptoms. Most men at this stage find out they ha e rostate cancer after a routine c hec k up or blood test.
S o for those of you that mig ht have forg otten... I T ’ S MO V EMBER ! !
When symptoms do ex ist, they are usually one or more of the following : Wak ing freq uently at nig ht to urinate S udden or urg ent need to urinate Difficulty in starting to urinate Slo o of urine and difficulty in sto ing D isc omfort when urinating P ainful ejac ulation Blood in the urine or semen D ec rease in libido ( sex urg e) R educ ed ability to g et an erec tion
“ Movember” is an annual, month-long event involving the g rowing of moustac hes during the month of November to raise awareness of prostate c anc er. T he Movember Foundation runs the Movember c harity event, and you c an g o “ www.movember. co to find out ore about it. W hat is the PR O ST AT E GLAN D T he prostate is an ex oc rine g land of the male reproduc tive system, and ex ists direc tly under the bladder, in front of the rect um. An ex oc rine g land is one whose sec retions end up outside the body e.g . prostate g land and sweat g lands. I t is approx imately the size of a walnut. T he urethra - a tube that g oes from the bladder to the end of the penis and c arries urine and semen out of the body - g oes throug h the prostate. When a male c limax es ( has an org asm) contractions force the rostate to secrete this uid into the urethra and leave the body throug h the penis. T he c ells in the prostate g land also produc e a protein c alled P S A ( prostates ecific antigen). U rine control As the urethra g oes throug h the prostate: the prostate g land is also in ol ed in urine control ith the use of rostate uscle fibers. These uscle fibers in the rostate contract and release controlling the o of urine o ing through the urethra. Prostate Cancer I n the vast majority of c ases, the prostate c anc er starts in the g land c ells - this is c alled adenoc arc inoma. P rostate c anc er is mostly a very slow prog ressing disease. I n fac t, many men die of old ag e, without ever k nowing they had prostate c anc er - it is only when an autopsy is done that doc tors k now it was there.
Nobody is really sure of hat the s ecific causes are. There are so many possible fac tors, inc luding ag e, rac e, lifestyle, medic ations, and g enetic s, to name a few. • Age - P rostate c anc er is rare among men under the ag e of 45 , but muc h more c ommon after the ag e of 5 0. • Genetics - In the USA rostate cancer is significantly ore c ommon and also more deadly among Afro-Americ ans than White-Americ ans. Men with a family history ( brother / father) have an inc reased risk . I f a man c arries the BR CA g ene he is also at hig her risk . • D iet - O ne study sug g ests that men with low risk prostate c anc er found that following an intensive healthy diet and lifestyle reg ime foc using on low meat and hig h veg etable and fruit intak e, reg ular ex erc ise, yog a stretc hing , meditation and support g roup partic ipation, c an alter the way that g enes behave and c hang e the prog ress of c anc er. O ther studies have indic ated that lac k of vitamin D & a diet hig h in red meat may raise a person’ s c hanc es of developing prostate c anc er. • Medication- S ome studies say there mig ht be a link between the daily use of anti-in a atory edicines and rostate c anc er risk . A study found that statins, whic h are used to lower c holesterol levels, may lower a person’ s risk of developing prostate c anc er. • O b esity - Another study found a c lear link between obesity and raised prostate c anc er risk , as well as a hig her risk of metastasis and death among obese people who develop prostate c anc er. • Sexually transmitted diseases (ST D s)-Men who have had g onorrhea have a hig her c hanc e of developing prostate c anc er.
T EST I N G F O R PR O ST AT E CAN CER T he PSA - T he P S A blood test look s for the presenc e in the blood of a rotein that is roduced s ecifically by rostate cells called Prostate S ecific Antigen (PSA). The resence of an elevated P S A does not nec essarily mean prostate c anc er is present as there are other medic al c onditions that c an lead to a P S A result outside the normal rang e. ( T his test is available direc tly at P rodia L aboratory) . T he D R E - T he D R E involves the doc tor inserting a g loved finger in the anus here it is ossible to feel art of the surface of the prostate. I rreg ularities inc lude swelling or hardening of the prostate, or lumps on the surfac e that may indic ate development of a tumor, or other problems. T he drawbac k to this test is that the doc tor c an feel only part of the prostate, so may miss irreg ularities beyond reac h. Biopsy - A Biopsy is a small tissue sample tak en with a spring loaded needle. T his normally c onduc ted by a spec ialist urolog ist. T hese simple sc reening tests have had a tremendous effec t on the early detec tion of prostate c anc er. Adopting these sug g estions will identify the men with ag g ressive prostate c anc er who are potentially g oing to die if not treated. T he D R E and the P S A are advisable as an annual prevention sc reen in all men over 5 0 years of ag e. While these tests are a little painful and perhaps embarrassing , they may save a lot more pain and heartac he in the future. S o to all you men out there, BE AWAR E & GR O W Y O U R HAI R !

L i on Ai r trag ed y l atest i n l ong l i st of Ind onesi a ai r saf ety i nci d ents S hortly af ter a L ion A ir p asseng er j et crashed into the sea of f J ak arta y esterd ay , the A ustralian Dep artm ent of F oreig n A f f airs and T rad e issued a warning to its staff. Australian Government officials and contractors were ordered not to fly on Lion Air or their subsidiary airlines. “The decision will be reviewed when the findings of the crash investigation are clear,” the warning states on the SmartTraveller.gov.au website. Lion Air Group is made up of Lion Air and its subsidiaries Batik Air and Wings Air. Batik Air has operated two flights a day between Perth and Denpasar in Bali since opening the route in June 2017. The Australian public has not been given a similar warning by DFAT and may not be aware that Batik Air is a subsidiary of Lion Air. Batik Air planes are serviced at the same Lion Air facility on Batam Island and flown by pilots employed by the Lion Air Group - Batik Air is Lion Air, just with different branding. While it is unclear yet what caused the three-month-old Boeing 737 MAX 8 to crash, the deaths of 189 people has once again shone a spotlight on the airline’s safety. The same jet had experienced technical problems during a flight from Bali to Jakarta the night before the fatal crash. Lion Air will need to explain why it was not grounded. Between 2002 to 2013 there have been at least 19 incidents involving the Lion Air Group in Indonesia. In one 2013 incident a pilot overran the runway in Bali and ended up in the ocean - fortunately everyone survived. [ABC October 30, 2018]
H oney m oon cou p l e tu rned away i n Bal i d u e to d og chewed p assp ort A husband and wife lost the chance to enjoy their $7,000 honeymoon in Bali after they were turned away by government officials due to the groom’s passport being damaged by the couple’s dog. According to The Mirror, Daniel and Tia Farthing said the passport was chewed on by their dog Milo several years ago, but it wasn’t a problem until they flew from the United Kingdom to Bali on October 16. While U.K. Border Force agents said the damaged passport wouldn’t be an issue during their vacation to Indonesia, officials there disagreed. Bali security personnel informed Farthing and his wife they would have to take the next flight out of the country. Unfortunately, the next flight out of Bali included a stopover in Singapore, where Farthing was detained for seven hours. The couple did eventually make it back to London’s Heathrow Airport, where an employee remarked about how the damage to the passport was not a big deal. Farthing’s sister-in-law started a GoFundMe campaign to assist the couple after losing all of their honeymoon investments and having to pay their way back to England. As for Milo, he is currently working on reconciliation with his owners. “He knows he’s done wrong because he’s been constantly coming to us for cuddles,” Farthing’s wife said. Leading Aboriginal souvenir wholesaler facing huge fines A leading Aboriginal souvenir wholesaler is facing the prospect of massive fines after selling ‘genuine’ Indigenous artef acts across A ustralia w hich w ere actually made in Bali. The Federal Court recently found Birubi Art Pty Ltd - who sold more than 18,000 boomerangs, didgeridoos and message stories to a p lethora of shop s across the nation - deliberately made false or m islead ing rep resentations that their products were Australian made. Despite being mass produced in Indonesian factories out of Bali, the court found some of the items, which featured Indigenous words like ‘Aboriginal A rt’ , ‘ g enuine’ and ‘ A ustralia’ , of f ered the im p ression they w ere g enuine A ustralian p rod ucts. ‘Aboriginal artefacts represent this country on a world stage - their design, form, colour and style hold unique connections to one of the oldest cultures on the globe,’ 60 Minutes investigative reporter Liam Bartlett said. ‘As soon as we were tipped onto this unscrupulous trade by concerned Indigenous artists, we immediately set out to identify the source of the supply chain - and the companies exploiting 40,000 years of Australian culture for a quick buck. ‘Shockingly, our investigation ultimately revealed these cheap copies were being mass produced for both the Australian tourism market - as well as many foreign clients in European countries.’ The Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) recently launched legal action against Birubi Art Pty Ltd. Tou ri st scav eng i ng throu g h Bal i trash tu rns ou t to b e g l ob etrotti ng Bu l g ari an b ack p ack er A tourist seen rummaging through rubbish bins around Bali’s Sanur Beach has been identified as a globetrotting Bulgarian backpacker. Three videos of the man eating d iscard ed f ood that he d ug out of trash cans w ent v iral after they were posted to Facebook by Dwikayanthi Pudja on S aturd ay . T he v id eos sp ark ed a ton of com m ents, some sympathetic. But also commentary on the hypocrisy of how challenging it is for Indonesians to travel abroad (to the west, in particular) with requirements for minimum balances in their bank accounts, while westerners can come to Indonesia so cheaply. It turns out that the Bali trash-picker is a 42-year-old Bulgarian tourist who goes by the name of Toto. Tracked down by Indonesian outlet Detik, Toto claimed that he was eating garbage to save money. He said he’s a backpacker and hopes to travel the world fully. “I have been to Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, France, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Singapore and just now Bali,” Toto told Detik. “I like traveling. So to buy a ticket, you must save money on food and accommodation,” he said, when asked why eat from the rubbish bins. The backpacker says other countries have not always received his scavenging style so well, but Bali has been friendly. “In othercountries, people look at me scavenging through trash with disgust, telling me to leave. But the people here are kind, friendly, and often give me food,” he said. The Bulgarian’s story comes at a time when Bali’s governor is complaining of cheap tourists who come to vacation on the island but spend little money during their trips. Well, at least he’s not beg-packing. [Coconuts Bali October 24, 2018]
Oceana d enou nces corp orate recy cl i ng com m i tm ents as answer to g l ob al p l asti cs cri si s As world leaders gather in Bali, Indonesia for the fifth-annual Our Ocean conference, the growing threat of plastic pollution to our oceans takes the global stage. Today, a group of more than 250 com p anies announced recy cling and circular econom y com m itm ents as the solution to p lastic w aste, but Oceana says, “recycling and vague promises are not enough to solve the plastics crisis.” Oceana’s chief policy officer Jacqueline Savitz released this statement following today’s announcement: “I hesitate to even call today’s corporate announcements a step in the right direction. Plastic pollution has grown into a major global crisis for our oceans, and it threatens our health. To have an impact, these companies must reduce the amount of single-use plastic at the source - in the factory - before it gets to consumers. We need to move on from plastic bottles, bags, lids and yes, straws. Recent beach cleanups have found plastic waste from Danone, Indofood, Unilever and others on Indonesia’s beaches. Yet none of these companies have committed to stop using plastic, to stop putting plastic into consumer products, or to even offer consumers alternatives. So, Indonesia’s beaches, like so many others around the world, will continue to be dumping grounds for companies that produce consumer goods, and who have refused to think outside the plastic bottle and bag. It’s not rocket science. Our grandparents lived without plastic and these companies must discontinue their unnecessary use of plastic. Every company that signed the declaration should commit to a meaningful, time-bound and specific percent-reduction of the amount of plastic it is putting into the market, and to find alternative ways to package and deliver its products. A circular economy is a nice utopian idea, but this crisis is unfolding today, and we need to see meaningful commitments to end the plastics crisis these companies have created.” Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Oceana is rebuilding abundant and biodiverse oceans by winning science-based policies in countries that control one third of the world’s wild fish catch. With more than 200 victories that stop overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution and killing of threatened species like turtles and sharks, Oceana’s campaigns are delivering results. Ind onesi an g ov ernm ent g i v es away l ap top s and p ri nters u sed at IMF - W orl d Bank conf erence to school s i n Bal i , East J av a and L om b ok The Provincial Government of Bali has received the gift of 200 laptops worth Rp. 3.2 billion and 125 printers worth Rp. 280 million that were transferred to the Province after being used for a brief period during the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank held in Bali held on October 12-14, 2018. The valuable gifts of computer hardware was handed over by Indonesia’s Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, to the Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, at the Finance Ministry’s Office in Denpasar on Thursday, October 25, 2018. As reported by Balipost.com, the Province of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and the Regency of Banyuwangi (East Java) also received a similar number of computers and printers as that given to Bali. “The grant of the laptop and printers is proof that we want to provide the greatest benefit to the public,” said Sri Mulyani. Speaking to the press, Sri Mulyani said the computer hardware given to the Banyuwangi, NTB, and Bali was of the highest quality available. When the government saw the difference in price between purchasing the computers and printers needed for the Bali IMF-World Bank Conference and renting them, a decision was made by her Ministry to purchase the equipment and donating them to the public at the end of conference. The Government spent Rp. 8 billion on the purchase of 500 laptops and Rp. 672 million for 300 printers. “I have the dream that from the grant of so many laptops will be born an Indonesian Jack Ma or some other creative individual,” Sri Mulyani. Meanwhile, the head of Bali’s Provincial Education Service, Tia Kusuma Wardhani, said the laptops given to Bali would be distributed to 40 schools in four regencies, with the emphasis on schools in the poorest areas of Bali, such as Bangli, Karangasem, Jembrana and Buleleng. In Bangli 7 schools will be given 45 laptops and 21 printers, in Karangasem 10 schools will be given 65 laptops and 50 printers, in Jembrana 1 schools will receive 25 laptops and 9 printers, and in Bulelelng 10 schools be given 65 laptops and 45 printers. Among the 30 schools receiving laptops, 18 are high schools and 12 are junior high schools. [Bali Discovery October 30, 2018]

Living the Senior Life in Bali by Ines Wynn S inc e there are few resourc es or media in Bali that c ater to the Boomer g eneration, it seems lik e a smashing idea to dedic ate a reg ular c olumn to this seg ment of Bali’ s ex pat c ommunity that is g rowing ever larg er by the year. Many Boomers are retiring to Bali for very obvious reasons lik e the balmy c limate, the c heerful and welc oming disposition of the loc al population, the availability of c oveted amenities and servic es and the preponderanc e of the modern day eq uivalents of the bak er, butc her and c andlestic k mak er. O ther attrac tive elements that draw us here are the ex otic c ulture, the natural attrac tions, the yog a havens and the palpable spiritual vortex of the plac e. Boomers and retired ex pats already mak e up a sizeable bloc k of Bali’ s ex pat c ommunity and that c reates a need for a platform that c an func tion as a foc al point for sharing prac tic al information about retired life here. T he Boomer Corner is to be a c olumn about issues and c onc erns that touc h upon senior life in Bali and you ill find a yriad of topic s handled and disc ussed in this spac e. To a e it e en ore of a le el laying field and co er as many bases as possible, it was dec ided to present viewpoints from different people, male and female, with varying opinions, orig ins, bac k g rounds, ex perienc es and interests. Erg o, this blog will be penned by a team of rotating authors. All of us are Boomers, orig inating from c ountries with their very own retirement pec uliarities. We are long -term ex pats living the still work ing or retired Boomer life and we aim to c over a variety of topic s relating to senior life in Bali, g rowing older with its attendant issues, ex pat c onc erns, etc . S ome of us have a c ertain nic he we feel c omfortable with, lik e health insuranc e, g eriatric health c are, maintaining poise and g rac e while g rowing older, leg al and tec hnic al matters pertaining to retirement, etc . O thers have interests that are rather ec lec tic and far-rang ing . But whatever ang le we’ re co ing fro you ll be sure to find so ething to your li ing
and worthy of your interest. What’ s more, we are also inviting partic ipation on the part of our readers so you c an c ontac t us with topic sug g estions relating to our subjec t matter and mandate at the email address noted below. We want this to be a platform that deals with issues you care about a lace here you find useful infor ation a spot to pull tog ether all info relevant to ag ing Boomers. T his, in a nutshell is our mission. T he topic s we intend to c over will ex tend over many areas and sub ects. So far e ha e identified a list that ill undoubtedly g row as we ex plore the many nook s and c rannies of what it means to live a Boomer life in Bali. Here is a sampling of what you may see c overed in future c olumns: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Heath care and hysical ell-being as e gro older Li ing co ing ith disabilities and chronic conditions Retire ent co unities in Bali Focusing on the ost i ortant things at an ad ancing age Social and other i ortant resources for aging e ats Fear of dying Dealing ith the echanics of dying burial or cre ation repatriation of remains I ortance of ills li ing ill last rites and instructions Dealing ith local staff Villa ro erty care aintenance Finding reliable and uality contractors and tu angs Voting ta es Financial sur i al oney atters Visa o tion desirability of citi enshi Relationshi s ith the old country relati es friends Dealing ith local culture olitics Language issues Personal essays on our e eriences Finding indred grou s or buddies to ractice yoga danc e, play c hess, read book s, k nit or g o sailing . Continuing to or rather than retire. Etc. Etc.
We hope you lik e our ideas and will help us spic e up our blog with your sug g estions, opinions and ex perienc es. While our mandate is to c over topic s relating to Boomer life in Bali, we realise that the very ac t of living here will eng ender the inevitable bumps and sc rapes that
ac c ompany a life in a c ountry that is not our own, with its many idiosync rasies, inevitable misunderstanding s and shortc oming s. While we will help where we c an, we don’ t have the resourc es to address all your prac tic al problems or leg al issues; neither c an we func tion as an ombudsman servic e. But we will try and c over a broad spec trum of topic s so that most of the puzzle piec es about Boomer life in Bali will fall into plac e. S o read on and c ome along with us on an ex c iting voyag e of disc overy. For starters the nex t few blog s of the Boomer Corner will deal with affordable medic al insuranc e options for foreig n seniors, c aring for a loved one with Alzheimer’ s disease, memory issues versus the normal ag ing proc ess, and how to stay fit and su le in a ature body. As one of my c entenarian relatives told me onc e, g rowing old is nothing . I t’ s being old that’ s the c halleng e. S inc e we all probably want to live out our twilig ht years in the most pleasant and stress-free way possible, we hope that with this dedic ated Boomer Corner, we c an help mak e the c halleng es of g rowing older just a wee bit less onerous.
The Boomer Corner is a column dedicated to people over 60 living in Bali. Its mandate is to cover topics, practicalities, activities, issues, concerns and events related to senior life in Bali. We welcome suggestions from readers. Email us at Baliboomers@gmail.com
