The Frugal Balinist ✱ Serutan onion slicer. Bawang merah kecil (small red onions OR shallots) are an indispensable ingredient in a whole array of Indonesian sauces and dishes like soto, gado-gado, bakso, satay, nasi goreng, etc. The flavors of the big red and white onions popular in the West just don’t cut it. Ordinarily, shallots are a bit difficult to slice because of their small size. The wooden serutan is a quick and easy way to shave them without

tears and leaves no onion smell on the skin. Costing Rp75,000 to Rp100,000 in Bali’s traditional markets, this marvelous traditional implement with one fixed blade may also be used to shave garlic and make all kinds of thin chips (kripik) from unripe banana, cassava and sweet potato; kripik tempe from soybean cake and for shaving peanuts for peanut fritters/brittle (peyek kacang). Though wood is more difficult to sanitize, it’s also tougher than plastic kitchen tools.

✱ Health is Wealth. Just because you get free BPJS consultations and medications at your local puskemas clinic, it doesn’t mean that you can’t avail yourself of the services of another larger, better equipped and staffed puskemas outside your area by just paying a very reasonable Rp15,000 co-payment for a GM (dokter umum) or Rp50,000 for dentist (poli-gigi). *BPJS doesn’t cover accidents or cosmetic surgeries. *If you get hurt in a road accident (kecelakaan),

flood (banjir) or natural disaster (bencana alam), call Jasa Raharja for hospital treatment. *If you know you’re about to experience extreme pain, bite a rolled up towel.

✱ Household hacks. Protect bamboo against beetles and termites by coating it with Ultran Yunior Politur (Rp45,000/ lt). *Make sure that the wood you use for your building project is aged, otherwise it won’t last a year. *Indolinen.com sells high quality bedding and towels at reasonable prices (they also do custom sizes). *Baking sheets (kertas bakar), available at any toko alat2 kue (bakery supplies shop), feels like paper but amazingly doesn’t burn and serves the same purpose as aluminum foil.

✱ Travelwise. I just got back from a grueling New York-Saudi-Singapore-Bali flight, an experience that taught me that passengers may take as many 4 oz. plastic containers (buy at Dapur Prima) as they want and that carrying any tool more than 7” inches long is prohibited. My nine-inch long $72 framing stapler barely squeaked by after I insisted that it was not a tool but office equipment. TSA officers must be able to inspect baggage contents, so only special TSA sanctioned locks - available at most airports and travel stores - that can be opened by security officers using universal “master” keys are acceptable. *Take photos of your rented motorbike so its owner won’t ask for supposed repairs for damage when you turn it in. *Be skeptical of drivers on Bali who claim that the accommodations you want to stay in is closed, then offer to take you to another one nearby (for which he’ll get a cut). *The medium priced Avanza is the most popular Toyota for Indonesian consumers. *At a price cheaper than most other luxury cars in Indonesia, Prestige Image Motorcars in Pluit, North Jakarta sells US-made Tesla Model X electric cars starting from US$200,000. *If you’ve been overcharged by Uber, file a complaint with them via email and the company will reimburse you via Uber credit.

✱ Techie tips. Always connect to free Wi-Fi to cut down on the use of your expensive data paket. *Use a microfiber cloth to clean grease, dust and bacteria off your smartphone’s screen, speaker grates, charging port and headphone jack; a mix 1 to 1 alcohol and water is even better. *Repair the malfunctioning autofocus feature on your SLR at Sinar Photo, Jl. Waturenggong 137 (tel. 0361-247-762) in Denpasar for Rp350,00-Rp400,000. *Programs that invade your screen to warn that your computer is full of viruses and worms are often spyware or scams themselves.

✱ Garden pointers. MAGICgro G7 (Rp81,000/998 ml) is a safe, effective and environmentally friendly organic pesticide for controlling pests and plant diseases. *In preparation for the upcoming rainy season, start work raising your garden beds. *Urban farming (http://indonesiaberkebun.org) saves money and assures that what you eat is free of pesticides. With good exposure to sunlight, as many as 20 different vegetables – spinach, kale, melon, lettuce, etc. - can be grown on a 3-sq-m balcony by using hydroponic planting techniques.

✱ Moneywise: Fill your own water bottle instead of wasting money and the earth buying plastic water bottles. *Gojek accounts are hacked, so ignore people who call to tell you that you’ve won a prize and need to enter a code on your phone to claim it. *Don’t buy prepaid Gojek and Grab accounts because often drivers don’t show up but your account is still charged. *If you’re in doubt about the amount you’re gifting is proper or fear that the money will be declined, just say that it is for their children. *Indonesians say “When you report a missing chicken to the police,

you lose a goat.” *Be aware that the law favors Indonesians who overwhelmingly win legal battles against foreigners. *Indonesians arriving at international airports cut off price tags and remove items from plastic sleeves in order to avoid paying import and luxury taxes on goods worth more than $250. *Indonesia’s anti-graft body KPK reports that 40% of state regional budgets are lost as a result of corruption. *UUD (pronounced ooh-ooh-deh) or Ujung-Ujungnya Duit: “At the end is money.” It takes money to speed up a new passport, driver’s license or business permit.

✱ Life hacks. According to Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS), unmarried Indonesians are happier compared to those who are married or divorced. *Indonesian Mixed Marriage Society (Perca) and Indonesian Diaspora Network (IDN) are organizations that give advice to mixed marriage couples and families. *Resident Americans will find www.AmericansInIndonesia.org invaluable for learning about new US tax regs, voting, US immigration laws, US Consular messages, etc.

8 What is Rabies and is my pet at risk? Although we rarely see cases of rabies at Sunset Vet, it is such a danger to human health that all residents and visitors to Bali should be aware of the risk. Rabies is a fatal viral disease that can affect all mammals, and has become endemic in the dog populations of many parts of Indonesia. Bali was rabies free until an infected dog arrived on a fishing boat in 2008. Since then, over 150 people have died and many thousands of dogs have been killed in the attempt to eradicate the disease. The virus is still present in parts of Bali and proving very difficult to eradicate completely due to the long incubation period of the disease, the large population of stray dogs and low levels of preventative vaccination among pet owners. It is vital for the safety of you and your family that all your pet dogs and cats are immune to rabies. To achieve this they need to be vaccinated with an internationally recognized vaccine that is correctly stored and correctly administered according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Almost all of the human cases in Asia and Africa are due to dog bites; bat rabies is seldom documented, unlike in the Americas. What are the symptoms of rabies? Dogs and cats with rabies generally present in one of two ways – with paralytic rabies or with furious rabies. The paralytic stage can occur after the furious stage, or the animal can skip the furious stage completely and display only the paralytic phase. Whichever form a dog or cat has, once it starts showing symptoms of rabies, it will die within 10 days. Symptoms to look out for are: • Change in behavior; friendly animals become shy or nervous, or aggressive animals become docile • Change in the tone of the bark (dogs) or meow (cat) • Exaggerated response to visual or auditory stimuli • Roaming, running for no apparent reason • Strange sitting position • Disorientation, progressing to seizures • Aggression • Hypersalivation • Reluctance to drink (hydrophobia) and fear of drafts (aerophobia) • Labored breathing • General weakness, progressing to paralysis

15 minutes with soap and water or iodine, to kill any rabies virus that has not yet entered the body. Although there is no treatment for rabies once an animal starts showing symptoms, it can be prevented by either preexposure or post-exposure vaccination (exposure = a bite by a rabid animal). However, if an unvaccinated dog is bitten by another dog that is likely to be rabid, then even aggressive flushing of the wound and post-exposure vaccination might not be enough to stop rabies being transmitted. This is because it takes several weeks for the vaccine to stimulate the body into producing antibodies, by which time it could be too late. We do not have the expensive ‘ready-made’ antibodies for dogs that we have for humans (known as rabies immunoglobulin) that can bridge this gap.

With rabies being so deadly, vaccine failure is simply not an option. Therefore when getting your dog or cat vaccinated for rabies, make sure it is an internationally reputable vaccine (usually best to stick to the ones manufactured by the large pharmaceutical companies) that has been stored correctly and is not out of date. Examples of reputable vaccines are Rabisin® (Merial Animal Health) and Defensor® (Pfizer Animal Health). The protocols according to the manufacturer datasheets are as follows: For Defensor®, a single 1ml dose is given subcutaneously at 3 months of age or older, followed by a repeat dose 1 year later, with a subsequent booster every 3 years. For Rabisin®, a single 1ml dose is given subcutaneously at 3 months of age or older, followed by a booster every 2 years. However the Bali government advises that pets are vaccinated yearly for rabies to be on the safe side. Immunity has been demonstrated 1 month after initial vaccination, and probably occurs sooner although this has not been clinically proven. The manufacturers recommend avoiding giving the rabies vaccine within 2 weeks of giving other vaccines if possible to ensure the maximum immune response. The rabies vaccine is thought to be safe to give to pregnant animals.

Unfortunately there is no reliable ‘in vivo’ test for rabies in animals in Bali. If a dog (or cat) is suspected of having rabies, it is either euthanized immediately and a sample of brain tissue sent to the laboratory for testing, or it is quarantined for 10 days.

The incubation period in both humans and animals can range widely from 2 weeks up to several years (average 2-3 months), with the incubation period being shorter the nearer the entry point is to the central nervous system. Therefore a bite to the face or neck has a much shorter incubation period than a bite to the foot. Once the virus has reached the brain, it spreads to other sites such as the salivary glands.

Unfortunately rabies is fatal and there is no successful treatment, in both animals and humans. Due to the risk to human health, animals that are suspected of having rabies should be either euthanized or quarantined in a secure environment with supportive veterinary care. If your pet gets bitten by another potentially rabid dog (i.e. a dog of unknown rabies vaccination status), the wound must be immediately flushed and washed for a minimum of

Prevention of Rabies

The rabies virus enters the body via wounds (e.g. a dog bite) or direct contact with mucosal surfaces. It cannot cross intact skin. The virus then travels up the nerves to the central nervous system, and once it reaches the brain it is almost always fatal.

If an animal is still alive 10 days after first exhibiting symptoms, then it does not have rabies, as a truly rabid animal will always die within 10 days of showing symptoms. However if you encounter a dog or cat in Bali showing any of the symptoms described, whether it is your own pet, a friend’s pet or a street animal, do not wait and see how things develop; you are putting the lives of yourself and others at risk. Call your veterinarian immediately.

Cars - Motorcycles Watercraft - etc

Are there any adverse effects vaccinating my dog or cat? Vaccination may sometimes induce a local reaction, as a small nodule at the injection site (usually 2-3cm diameter, persisting up to 10-15 days). Vaccination may exceptionally induce an anaphylactic (hypersensitivity) reaction; this can usually be managed in a clinic setting. Sunset Vet offers veterinary services via their Kuta (24hr) and Ubud (8am-10pm) clinics. Meet Katrina Lee - Life Coach and Counsellor. Part consultant, part motivator, therapist and sometimes even friend…. a life coach is not necessarily someone you turn to purely when your life arrives at a crossroads or catastrophe. Life coaches help us to tap into our full potential and are often an integral part of moving forward and reaching our goals whether they are career based, personal or a combination of both! Katrina Lee is a life coach and counsellor whose journey towards this career began over three years ago after separating from her husband of 25 years - an event that triggered her own spiritual, emotional and physical awakening. Looking for her own answers, Katrina sought healers and coaches from across the island, gleaning the best of knowledge and skills from each of them, then creating her own personal approach and style. One does not simply ‘become’ a healer. In depth training, courses and experience are also required and Katrina has completed

It’s not only her studies which add depth to Katrina’s life coaching skills. A multi faceted career as a Chartered Accountant, Investment Banker and Interior Designer have also well equipped her to understand many of her client’s struggles with stress and direction. Having made her home in numerous countries at various stages throughout her adult life, she can

further empathise with many of her Bali based clients, relating to the highs and lows that often accompany expat life! In addition to the generics of life coaching, Katrina’s goals with her clients go deeper than simply goal setting and motivation. Via her training in NLP and Theta Healing as well as her own strengths in healing, she aims to unlock those subconscious and conscious beliefs and experiences which hold people back; healing the wounds which often contribute to counterproductive behaviour. Olympic athletes, sports stars, professionals, executives, entrepreneurs and CEOs often attribute their growing and continued success to their association with a life coach. If there is a gap between where you are now and where you wish to be, you should probably contact someone like Katrina Lee! 13 New Take on Bali’s Tradition of Food Foraging by Anita Food foraging has been around since time immemorial. The F Balinese have always realized that there is an abundance of B nutritious and delicious edible and medicinal plants growing n rright around us. Backed by deep respect for nature, this ttraditional way of life proved to be both sustainable and nourishing. Sang Ketut Rai Wibawa, known as Sang Tu, n iis the co-founder and General Manager of the Bali Silent Retreat (BSR) in Tabanan, and an authority on Balinese R medicinal herbs. Sang Tu says that the Balinese tradition m of foraging has been handed down from generation to o generation for hundreds of years. “We Balinese have always g ccollected our food in the forests and jungles,” he says. “The fforagable plants are not just fresh, but the strongest, filled with the most nutritional value available.” w The BSR kitchen has built b ilt on this traditional knowledge to consistently deliver an artful combination of flavors, textures and aromas. This penchant for nutritious and sustainable dishes gradually evolved into the New Earth Cooking (Bumi Baru) philosophy. Developed by Chef Simon Jongenotter, who taught BSR’s cooking staff how to transform fresh and high-quality produce into delectable culinary creations, the philosophy is as simple as it is ingenious. “With so many culinary options around every corner, it is easy to forget that what we eat, and how we choose t o eat it, affects not just our wellbeing, but also the planet and all life forms,” he says. “New Earth Cooking encourages people to select food that is not only good for them individually, but also for the wellbeing of the planet. Rather than blindly following new superfood fads that rely on ingredients imported from the far reaches of the world, New Earth Cooking focuses on sustainability and sourcing fresh, organic ingredients close to home.” A large part of the New Earth Cooking philosophy is treating all plants and people with uttermost respect. This involves buying only local products, paying fair prices, and what Simon refers to as “infusing the soil with love.” Most of the produce used in BSR’s kitchen come from the retreat’s jungle garden, where they are grown amid other plants without the use of any commercial fertilizers. However, Sang Tu says growing produce using composting and cow fertilizer is not without its challenges. “Most vegetable seeds have grown used to the stimulation of super fertilizers and are weak without them,” he says. “On the other hand, our produce grows mostly from third, fourth and even fifth generation self sustaining seeds, which drop to the soil and then volunteer to grow themselves again, with the help of natural fertilizers such as cow manure.” The choice of BSR kitchen’s daily menu depends on what is growing fresh in the jungle garden that particular day. Each day, the kitchen crew ventures into the retreat’s four-hectare jungle garden to forage for the fruit, vegetables and herbs used in the preparation of the kitchen’s mostly vegan recipes—the exception being natural free range duck eggs. Some of the more imaginative options on the menu include beetroot and turmeric sorbet slice, Moroccan tomato and pumpkin swirls and nasi kuning (yellow rice) infused with turmeric and lime. “The artistic thrill of creating new delectable dishes when a new plant comes into season is irresistible. Plus, we never use any unhealthy ingredients in our food such as refined sugar, genetically modified produce or processed oils,” Simon says. It is little wonder that BSR’s garden-to-table cuisine has been certified by Slow Food, a grassroots movement of over 100,000 members with a passion for unhurried food in more than 150 countries. Guided by the notion of good, clean and fair food, Slow Food believes that food should benefit the consumers, growers and the planet as a whole. Right now, both Simon and Sang Tu hope that more people will start cooking with local ingredients, and bring back the traditional Balinese ways of sourcing produce. “It makes me sad to see that many Balinese are choosing to use modern chemicals in their gardens,” Sang Tu says. “I like the old school ways of cooking with organic, chemical free and freshly picked produce. This is what makes our food so special. This and the love that our kitchen angels pour into each dish.”

The Five Principles of New Earth Cooking Place: A lot of the food we consume on daily basis is imported, often from distant locations. How much sense does this make? Not only does the journey that the produce has to make increase the price of the final product, it negatively affects its quality and increases greenhouse gas emissions. Product: Pesticides and commercial fertilizers affect the quality and nutritional value of produce, while transportation negatively affects its freshness. Just how much are you – and your body - willing to put up with? Price: Cheap food is often grown on a large scale and as fast as possible, with little regard to its nutritional value. This means that you are not only polluting your body, but also putting those wishing to grow produce in the natural way out of business.

People: Cheap produce is often grown in large amounts with the help of cheap labor. Are you content eating food grown by people who might be being exploited? Planet: The planet might be suffering from your eating habits, even if you are consuming what is considered healthy food. Bale Banjar Culture Club (12 November) The Ayodya Resort offers a monthly programme of free lectures about Balinese life, culture and history. This is part of the resort’s commitment to be an inclusive part of the Bali community and all that it has to offer. Organised for the second Sunday of each month guests are welcome to attend the lecture. Featured on this date is Ron Lilley, a Bali based herpetologist also known as ‘The snake man of Bali’ with his extensive knowledge of snakes. Ron Lilley also organises the Bali Snake Patrol which is a group that rescues snakes that have found their way into hotels, villas and the community. This is definitely not a job for the faint hearted but nevertheless a job that needs doing. Ron Lilley will speak about ‘Snakes in Bali Culture’ and provide information about the Balinese and their attitudes towards snakes. You will also learn about the 46 species of land snakes and 15 species of sea snakes which have been photographed by Ron Lilley. This is a rare opportunity to attend an information session as well as enjoy a cash bar and socialise with other participants. The session will last about 45 minutes with opportunities to ask questions and find out more about one of Bali’s long term residents and his passion for snakes. You can also join Ron Lilley at the Ayodya’s Waterfall restaurant which has a good dinner offer for participants. Do call to reserve your spot.

This variation of traditional pesto adds another taste dimension. It’s easy to prepare and full of those kale nutrients. Besides having it with pasta, you can spoon it into soups, spread over a layer of fresh ricotta (https://baliadvertiser. biz/basic-ricotta-cheese-2/), toss it with steamed potatoes, over eggs or use it in salad dressing. Sometimes we add chopped roasted walnuts and finely grated Parmesan cheese. We spoon any left overs into an ice cube tray and when frozen hard, we pop them into a zip lock bag for later use.

Basic Kale and Basil Pesto Makes about 1 1/2 cups C/E/I-8 Nov 17

Ingredients: - 4 cups kale leaves, washed and stems discarded - 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves - 2 tsp.lemon juice - 1 tsp. lemon zest finely grated - 1 large clove garlic - 1/3 to 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil - salt and pepper to taste - 2 shakes of tabasco or 1/16 tsp. powdered cayenne Directions : With the blender or food processor running, throw in the garlic clove until minced. Stop the blender and add the rest of the ingredients and run the blender until all is chopped. Stop the blender and scrape the sides down. Turn it back on and run until you have a smooth sauce. FAREWELL MAN OF VISION This island is rich with people who, for their own unique reasons, come Bali and stay to “make a difference”. One such extraordinary man was John Fawcett, who died recently at the age of 85.John made Bali his home about 24 years ago, after his life in Australia fell apart as a tragic side effect of an epidural block for back pain. Against all predictions he recovered, and discovered a new life’s passion in helping Balinese people regain their eyesight, at first raising money for a mobile clinic for cataract surgery. Initially, his fight wasn’t just to find funds, or doctors and other medical staff who would volunteer their time, but he also fought the Balinese belief in karma – that there was a reason for this blindness and it should be accepted. Over time, he successfully challenged that thinking, not only helping people restore their sight, but also obtaining surgery for hundreds of children with cleft palates and other facial deformities.Truly, this man’s legacy will love on for generations, both in the shape of the John Fawcett Foundation, which continues his inspiring work, and in the thousands of clear-sighted eyes and smiling faces of the Balinese whose lives he enriched through his work. To donate to the foundation, go to www. johnfawcett.org, or visit the foundation in Jalan Pengembak in Sanur, or call +62 361 270812 for more information.

GUEST CHEFS AT LOCAVORE It’s been an exciting year, both in Ubud and abroad, for celebrated restaurant, Locavore. In July the team opened Nusantara yet another extraordinary Ubud restaurant – where Café Havana used to be on Jalan Dewi Sita. At the same time, Locavore chefs Ray and Eelke were sharing their expertise internationally as guest chefs/speakers in two completely different parts of the world – the Philippines and the Netherlands.

Bali Dacha is hosted by a loving Russian couple, Ekaterina and Denis, who have somehow captured that relaxed, tranquil side of Ubud that’s gone missing a bit lately. It’s only 20-30 minutes east of Ubud on the way to Gianyar, past Goa Gajah. Call 0813-5399-4900 for more info and bookings, or find Bali Dacha on Facebook.

FINGERS CROSSED Indonesia’s national disaster agency last week downgraded the warning levels for Mount Agung, more than six weeks since the initial red alerts for a volcanic eruption. Hopefully the level of seismic activity will continue to decline, with the number of recorded earthquakes continuing to drop from their peak of 300 per day. For Balinese people evacuated from the exclusion zone weeks ago, it will be an opportunity to get their lives back on a more normal footing, so I hope our beloved mountain continues this calming trend. The news is great for all of Bali, which has naturally suffered a major downturn in the economy during this period with many tourists cancelling or postponing their trips. It feels like perfect timing though, as our villages begin to line the streets with their beautiful penjor, those joyous decorated bamboo poles that are designed specifically to carry the Hindu prayers up to the Gods.

The Curtain Falls on a Stellar Staging of Literature and Language by Renee Thorpe Origins was the theme of this year’s gathering of explorers, poets, entertainers, activists and storytellers. Conversations touching on the universal concepts of where we come from and where we are going, ran through every event. As in festivals past, the audience was witness to moments of brilliance and revelation. “A sense of wonder,” “beautiful” and “magic” were sincere answers to this reporter’s queries for participants’ assessments. Writers and guests dropped salient tidbits about their sources of inspiration, their successes, and a few secrets; somehow this year delved just a bit deeper. Animator Pierre Coffin, director of the wildly popular Despicable Me and Minions ¿lms, revealed his love of the melodies and emotional tones of language, in a story of how he came to choose the minions’ vocabulary. Finding melancholy in Italian, one little yellow chap utters “spaghetti” in a run of syllables expressing sadness, while Cof¿n looked to his happy Indonesian roots to make “terima kasih” the best words for a moment of minion gratitude. Cof¿n’s mother, proli¿c feminist author Nh. Dini (Nurhayati Srihardini Siti Nukatin) graciously received the Festival’s Lifetime Achievement award. There were many acknowledgements of mothers, including Nature, who

seemed to heed organizers prayers and cease all rainfall and even to quiet the steaming volcano. Festival Founder and Director Janet deNeefe nodded to a large outdoor canopy and said she took every precaution for inclement conditions, from organizing evacuation procedures to making pleas to higher powers. “This festival was born out of a tragedy in the 2002 Bali bombing,” deNeefe said, “and we are used to existing amidst chaos. The recent events remind me of that essential quality of writers, solidarity. I want to thank everyone for being very Balinese about this festival: showing up is all that’s required.” Many festivalgoers thronged a session where tables were turned to one of its veteran interviewers, regional political commentator Michael Vatikiotis. Another seasoned researcher, American professor Janet Steele, asked Vatikiotis about his extraordinary career being a con¿dante to Asian leaders and political insiders. Michael launched Blood and Silk, his new book tracing the origins of political and economic muscle and bone of southeast Asian nations. Former US Consul Stanley Harsha declared it a fully accessible must-read for expats, ¿rmly placed in the canon of cultural texts such as Beauty is a Wound (Eka Kurniawan) and Tikam Samurai (Makmur Hendrik). If ever there was an up-close and personal literary festival, it’s Ubud’s. Book signings were chatty and fun, poetry readings were egalitarian affairs of laureates like Simon Armitage alongside virtual unknowns, and fan + idol sel¿es were actually encouraged. Even popular novelist Ahmad Fuadi (The Land of Five Towers) grabbed his camera to ¿lm impromptu reviews from his readers.

C/U/G-27 Sept 17

Origins opened a rich vein for audience fascination. Paul McVeigh’s self effacing chronicle of creating his book The Good Son brought appreciative laughs, while Marina Matahir’s accounts of her father’s ordeals with injustice and persecution were heartbreaking. There’s a source for everything, readers heard, whether it be a scheming rival or a mother with a crack sense of humor. Sometimes a great story came across in music and other art forms. Eko Supriyanto’s masterpiece of movement, Balabala, stems from a West Halmahera war dance, but the world-famous choreographer and his team worked for more than 3 years with young Maluku dancers, perfecting its complex athletic movements. What was once their ancestral warriors’ show of strength became, for festivalgoers at a nighttime Blanco Museum event, a powerful realization of the innate strength of women of all ages. The performance was part of a fundraising evening, curated by the UWRF for volcano evacuees. In summary, the festival proved to be one of the very best in its 14 year lifetime thus far. 160 writers from 60 nations did not disappoint. Perhaps the most poignant words of tenderness towards a writer’s beginnings were heard through a microphone at the festival hub, at the lively free event, Rocking the Prejudice. Kerobokan Prison inmate and songwriter Febri, fronting the extraordinary prisoner rock band Antrabez, dedicated a song to his mother and father, simply adding, after a heavy pause, “I’m sorry.” Copyright © 2017 Bali Advertiser You can read all past articles of Ubud Writers & Readers Festival at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Indonesian Stamps: Pictorial Coins of the Realm: Part Two There are few better ways to fathom the scope and breadth of Indonesia - a treasure house of art, cultural artifacts, ethnic traditions and natural wonders – than through the nation’s stamps. Stamps are a wonderful way to learn about the unique gamelan orchestra, colorful wayang theater, remarkable flora and odd and misunderstood wildlife. Examples of subjects range from great painters like Affandi and Raden Saleh to a 1967 stamp series showing 11 images of unusual musical instruments: Dayak harp (petik hape) and Javanese gangsa gong. Wage Rufolk Supratman, who composed the music and lyrics for the national anthem “Indonesia Raya,” was honored in a stamp issued in 1997. Distinct ethnic architecture is another dominant feature: Torajan high-peaked houses, Bandung’s magnificent artnouveau Gedung Sate, the stately structures of University of Gadjah Mada, the great rambling wooden palaces of Nusatenggara, the stolid swooped-roofed tribal houses of the Batak as well as the graceful Minangkabau traditional rumah adat. Indonesia is one gigantic natural history museum, so it’s only to be expected that its stamps highlight phenomena like Lake Toba - the largest volcanic lake in the world - the iconic Bromo-Semeru massif, the Mondolika coastline, the beautiful natural harbor of Labuhan Bajo and extraordinary endemic fauna and flora: the Bleeding Toad, Water Snowflakes, Pangolin and the Slow Lori. A whole series of stamps celebrate the kancil mousedeer, Papua’s Birds of Paradise, Borneo’s hornbill and orangutan, NTT’s Komodo Dragon, the spectacular Ikan Raja Laut fish; an orchidthemed postage stamp as part of the Bogor Botanical Garden’s 200th anniversary and the one-ofa-kind plant species, the parasitic Rafflesia Arnoldii, the world’s largest flower.

alam) like earthquakes. In the republic’s early years, getting the economy on its feet after the war of independence was crucial. To spur tourism, regional stamps highlight the rich culture of Bali and the many attractions and cultures of the Dayaks and the pristine Derawan Islands of Kalimantan that promised to fulfill everyone’s dream of a tropical paradise. Handicrafts like pottery and rattan weaving are frequent themes of stamps.

The government stamp office has never been shy about showing off historic milestones. Commemoratives were issued to honor press freedom day, the 100th anniversary of Java Man’s discovery’s (1889-1989) and the Borobudur Ship’s Expedition of 2005. As the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, Islamic traditions hold a special place in Indonesia’s philatelic repertoire. The Muhammadiyah religious movement’s founder K.H. Ahmad Dahlan (1868-1923) is the subject of one stamp. The Hindu epics in Javanese puppetry are often the subject of stamps: a dragon devouring the sun, characters from the Mahabharata, the story of Monkey General Hanuman, etc.

Postage stamps even serve as propaganda in Indonesia’s heritage culture wars with Malaysia. Though the origin of the angklung bamboo musical instrument is claimed by its neighbor, it undoubtedly belongs to Indonesia. A postage stamps of a child playing angklung was in circulation as far back as 1952.

Stamp Dealers, Associations, Museums A dwindling number of businesses in Indonesia serve the waning global hobby known as philately. In one year alone, the 401 million letters and postcards sent in 2013 dropped to 322 million sent in 2014. It’s not easy to find stamp dealers in Indonesia and Bali is no exception. I couldn’t find one stamp shop on the island.

by Bill Dalton

lists its rules and regulations rather than display many of Indonesia’s beautiful and distinct stamps. Stamps are for sale on the association’s Facebook page, though they tend to be a bit overpriced.

Postal employees are helpful in explaining symbolism and themes on stamps. Larger post offices offer philatelic sales. One post office in Seminyak and the one in Ubud keep folders on hand of mint Indonesian stamp issues. The island’s main Denpasar Post Office on Jl. Raya Puputan in Renon in Denpasar has a philatelic counter. Starting at 9:30 am on the second week of every month, the PFI holds a Philately & Numismatic Bourse here with an auction, philatelist coaching and mini-exhibition. Contact Surya 081755 -4032, email: suryastampsbali@ hotmail.com. Last August, a major event that lured new collectors was the World Philatelic Exhibition (Pameran Filateli Dunia) hosted in Bandung, West Java. Attended by 52 delegations and 60 stamp dealers from 82 countries, there were presentations, bilingual historical exhibits, blown up portraits of national heroes, a Pos Indonesia booth and old artifacts like post boxes, delivery bicycles and vehicles. Hundreds of sets of special-edition stamps were printed to celebrate the occasion. The venerable old Gedung Felatali in central Jakarta, built between 1912-1929 by Dutch architect John van Hoytema, is located on Jl. Pos, known as Post Weg in colonial times. Listed as a cultural heritage site, the PFI has made the building its base since 1997. The Indonesian Stamp Museum (Museum Perangko Indonesia) in Jakarta’s Taman Mini Indonesia park houses stamp collections and dioramas highlighting postal history: a replica of the 1847 “Penny Black,” the world’s oldest stamp; events that inspired the designs of various Indonesian stamps as well antiquated means of transport used to carry mail such as VOC warships, pacalang vessels, horse carriages and two wheeled carts.

Rafflesia Arnoldii Indonesia has more volcanoes than any other country, thus stamps mark two of the most cataclysmic eruptions in world history: Tambora on Sumbawa in 1815 and Krakatoa off west Java in 1883. This geologically unstable country’s stamps also warn of the dangers caused by natural disasters (bentjana

Flowers Can Go and Get Stuffed! ‘Dear Garden Doctor, I had never really thought of flowers as food until I recently came across the culinary delight of Italian stuffed zucchini flowers and thought it would be great if I could grow my own edible flowers. Is it possible to grow zucchini flowers in the tropical climate? Do you have any ideas for other types of easy flowers to grow that could be used in this way? Thanks in advance, Kerry.’ Growing edible flowers is an efficient way to garden – producing colourful plants that attract the bees whilst also providing colour and unique flavour to your culinary creations at the same time. Flowers can taste sweet, spicy, bitter or subtle and some seem to have no taste at all. Flowers are a fabulous fragrant addition to both savoury and sweet dishes. It’s common to see flower petals used in salads, teas, as a garnish for meals, or more creatively as a flavouring for desserts or even flower infused ice-cubes. Try sprinkling flower petals over ice-cream. There are so many possibilities… Stuffed zucchini flowers have made many a mouth water over the years and are indeed a favourite of the Italians – the word zucchini is in fact derived from the Italian word zucchine. The flowers are typically stuffed with cheese, meat, vegetables and herbs, served fresh, baked or even fried in batter. Mozzarella, ricotta, spinach, prosciutto and anchovy are common ingredients. There are numerous ways to do it, the only limit being your imagination - but this isn’t a cooking show, it’s a gardening column! On second thoughts though gardening and cooking are inextricably linked, for many edible gardeners like myself also fancy themselves as quasi chefs. It’s natural for the edible gardener to cook, and likewise for the chef to grow their own produce. The problem is though that I can’t cook anywhere near as good as I grow, and most chefs don’t have the time to look after a garden. That’s why the chefs go to farmers markets and I eat out…. I digress.

and additional health benefits. Growing zucchini flowers is a great idea, likewise pumpkin flowers which can be grown and used interchangeably. These plants won’t do well in the high humidity of the tropical wet season, mildew will become too big a problem. To grow zucchini or pumpkin flowers, sow seeds as the wet season is trailing off in March, and grow right through the tropical dry season up until November. Try dandelion! It’s no secret that I am in love with dandelion. A weed to the uninitiated, all parts of this wonderful plant are useful. The leaves can be used in salads, or steamed like spinach – by the way the Italian’s love this too! The roots can be dried, roasted, ground and used as a coffee substitute - a well-known liver tonic that has many health benefits. And then there’s the flowers, which can be picked off and eaten fresh if you please. Otherwise fry them and enjoy crunchy dandelion chips. I just can’t get my head around the fact that this simple little versatile flower really could be my favourite of all within the botanical world. Maybe they were onto something when they said that the simple things in life are often the best, or is that just a cornflakes commercial I recall from the halcyon days of the 1980s? Either way, I have seen the way that the bees hover around them and I have no doubt that they love them just as much as I do. In fact, bees quite literally do see dandelion flowers differently. Bees perceive UV light invisible to us, meaning that a dandelion spied from a bee’s eye view uncovers colours and patterns both unknown and unseen by us simple homo sapiens. Whoever said that beauty is in the eye of the beeholder was right! Nasturtium is next on my list. They come in a variety of colours from cream to bright yellow, orange, peach, and even pinks. They are tossed into salads to add a sweet peppery flavour, and a splash colour. They can be eaten whole, or as a garnish and are also a good source of vitamin C. The fresh buds can be picked prior to blooming and prepared like capers. Nasturtium make for a colourful groundcover, are drought tolerant, and will easily take over a patch of the garden if left to their own devices. I’ve even seen them sprawling across the salty dry sand dunes by the beach. Now if they can grow there that tells me they will grow almost anywhere! Lavender is another versatile flower used in both sweet or savoury. It will add a pleasant flavour and aroma to cakes and desserts. It’s best to use English lavender for culinary applications. It will also attract an abundance of bees and infuse the garden with a pleasant calming scent.

For roses remove the bitter base and use the remaining petals. They have a subtle perfumed flavour perfect for floating in beverages or scattering across desserts. The flavour is usually more pronounced in darker varieties. Borage blooms are a lovely blue with a taste reminiscent of cucumber. Sunflowers are well known for their edible seeds but have petals that can also be eaten. Allium blooms (leeks, chives, onions, scallions) are all edible and flavourful! These flowers taste just like the plant that they come from. All of the flowers mentioned above can be used in creative ways - as a garnish, in rice-paper rolls, cakes, desserts, jams, salads, dressings, infused in teas, cocktails, lemonade or sparkling waters. Freeze them in ice-cubes and give them to the kids for a fun, colourful healthy alternative to sugary ice-blocks. They will just love to eat a flower! To keep flowers fresh, place them on moist paper towels and refrigerate in an airtight container. Some will last up to a week like this. To revitalise limp flowers dunk them in iced water. WARNING Some flowers can be fatally toxic. Before eating any flowers from the garden ensure that you have positively identified the plant using the botanical or scientific name and verify that it is safe for human consumption. Remember that common names are not specific so some flowers within the same family may be safe whilst others could be toxic. Further to this, flowers from different families may have the same common name, so always refer to the botanical name written in Latin for confirmation. That reminds me, a few years ago an Italian grandmother made global headlines when she mistook angels trumpet (datura metel) for a wild broccoli variant. She picked the plant and sprinkled it over her home cooked spaghetti. After dinner they all fell ill (husband, daughter and grandson) and were found collapsed on the floor soon afterwards, vomiting and paralysed. Thankfully they were all rushed to hospital and placed in a medically induced coma, where they recovered but were extremely lucky that the dose wasn’t fatal. What was it again that I said about gardeners fancying themselves as chefs?

GARDEN DOCTOR

So where were we now? That’s right, a garden of edible flowers. It is a creation that looks great and tastes good too. A brilliant idea!

Marigold has a peppery zing and comes in a range of bright sunny tones from yellow to orange which will brighten up any meal. The petals can be used in salads or sprinkled over rice, soup and pasta.

The best place to start producing and eating flowers is obviously to choose the easiest ones to grow that have a palatable flavour. You may also consider the variety of colours

Dandelion, nasturtium, marigold and lavender can all be used in combination with pansy, rose, violet, salvia, sunflower, borage and lavender to make a rainbow infused garden salad.

Project Karma’s ‘Sentinel Project’ in Bali is to combat child exploitation and child trafficking for sex abuse... so shocking but an ugly truth. One we don’t think about really as a world away from how we live.

Helping the Children of Bali As we all know Bali is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world and people travel from far and wide to come visit this tropical island .. enjoy sunsets and cocktails on the beaches, wonder at the endless stretches of green rice fields, the tropical rainforests abundant with palm tress and most of all the beautiful and gentle Balinese people. But behind Bali’s face of luxury hotels, fine dining restaurants and shops galore, there are many impoverished local communities who encounter many life threatening problems. Water is scarce, there is very poor sanitation, no health facilities for them and the children have little or no schooling. Our aim at Rotary Club Bali Canggu is to provide as much help as we can to assist and provide for those in need by organizing fundraising, applying for special funding grants and seeking to join alliances with overseas Rotary Clubs for joint projects together. We are very fortunate to have 2 of our current members Tim Cameron, the founder of Stella’s Child and Chris Sperduto, the founder of Project Protect Helmet Man and both are very passionate and very committed with their work for the children of Bali and we endeavor to support them in any way we can. Stella’s Child .. is a foundation here in Bali whose focus is on helping Balinese children between the ages of 4 and 18 who come from impoverished backgrounds, are victims of violence and exploitation or come from broken homes. Stella’s Child provides safe places to live, quality health care and access to formal education. Tim’s mission is to empower Bali’s youth by equipping these underprivileged children with the necessary skills to create a better future through classes, mentoring, workshops and programs. The training programs help the children not lose sight of their dreams, to gain self confidence and learn skills to last a lifetime. With Tim’s passion those who have been unfairly disadvantaged are given the opportunity to

grow and prosper and create a future. Project Protect Helmet Man .. “Always Wear Your Helmet And Remember To Clip It ” is the catch phrase of Chris’s life saving education project whose aim is to transform the habit of a nation. Too often on these busy Bali roads we see adults with helmets (unclipped) and the children with none at all. Chris informs us the parents wear helmets to avoid fines from the police, not because they are trying to protect themselves. With an alarming rate of serious head injuries occurring due to no helmet use, Chris created an icon called ‘Helmet Man’ who spreads the word to the children about the importance of wearing one and clipping it. He keeps it fun and positive and distributes the helmets so they learn how to wear them. Over the past 2 years Chris has done over 60 presentations and distributed over 9,000 helmets and the aim to is to never see a child on a motorbike without one. Our Rotary Club is heavily committed to helping those in need with a lot of projects directed towards children as they are the most vulnerable of all. Most of us who have happy healthy well cared for children and grand children could not imagine those we love living lives without care, food, shelter and protection. After hearing about a relatively new project in Bali called Project Karma, our President approached the Founder Glen Hulley to enquire more and ask if him if he would join us at our meeting to do a presentation. Though the nature of this would be very confronting he felt it would be beneficial for all to be made more aware of the sinister side of our paradise island.

When Glen travelled to Cambodia in 2013 his life changed forever. He was approached in a market, offered a young girl and the realization that this was happening shocked him so deeply he set about to do what he could to stop this evil trade. Glen then started the charity Project Karma with the aim to create specialized teams to work in the hot spots of Asia. Glen’s background was in security, police investigation (gaining an Advanced Diploma in Public safety), intelligence analysis and field and drug investigations. He spoke at length about child trafficking and the sad reality that in SE Asia this problem is worse than anywhere. Glen is now conducting awareness seminars with the local security, village leaders, civil police, business owners and university students with the plan to train community investigators to communicate with villages and schools. These investigators will gather evidence and work closely with police to be able to finally arrest the offenders and help lessen this evil. One would have to say the sooner the better! We were all shocked, saddened but transfixed to hear the harsh reality of what lengths some people go to and on a lighter note so happy to hear of all the success stories. On a final note our club was very happy to be able to contribute towards the Mt Agung Relief Fund recently. On 2 occasions we travelled to 10 evacuee camps in the Karangasem area to supply 30 Nazava Water Filter units which I must say were badly needed. These poor people had been having to boil water for drinking so the sight of these units bought out a lot of smiles. And a big thank you to all who donated! Our Rotary Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the beautiful Hotel Tugu at the end of Jalan Batu Bolong in Canggu. Come along, join our meeting and meet the team! 27 Turd World Walking out of a restaurant without paying the RP3 million you owe is against the law anywhere. It’s foolish, among other things including selfish, dismissive of others’ rights, and a low act that reflects very poorly on the perpetrators. Mostly those who commit such acts are immune to conscience. They are citizens of what it is tempting to call the Turd World. A recent incident in Ubud attracted attention, and the interest of police, after a group of foreigners reportedly staged a careful one-by-one disappearing act designed to dodge their accumulated cash consideration. A photo of the group and a report about their bill dodging was posted all over the social media. It would be nice to think that this exposure resulted in their eventual apprehension by the police (a possibility) or that it prompted a group attack of conscience (an improbability). The problem with social media exposure is that it also provides an unedited forum for those with grotty as opposed to gritty opinions, whose mission in life is apparently to see things with one eye only and to avoid connection with the principle of non sequitur. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Crossed Wires Among the many things here that cause outbreaks of mutual angst – “locals” on one side and “foreigners” on the other – is the thorny question of what actually constitutes “work” for visa purposes. It’s a hardy annual, forever popping up in some form or other. It usually creates a quite unnecessary furore and leads to all sorts of tin drums being banged in a very discordant manner. In large measure this because Indonesia, while it is beset by a tangle of rules and regulations, is also a place where anyone with connections and currency can bend or ignore the rules. It’s that sort of place. People are working on fixing that but it remains a work in progress. An Italian tourist, Carmine Sciaudone, has just been released from jail in Bali and has gone home after more than year of incarceration. He had helped fix a projector on a locally operated party boat because it wasn’t working (no surprise there) and he knew how to fix it. That’s work, you see, if the authorities choose to decide that it is. And you can’t “work” on a tourist visa. Interpreted very broadly, such rules also mean you can’t cut the grass, wash the car, mend a fuse in your house, or do anything much at all, on any sort of tourist of temporary resident visa. That’s because, notionally, it deprives an Indonesian of a work opportunity. It’s good that Sciaudone has been freed. It’s ridiculous that he was incarcerated in the first place.

Don’t Panic! Don’t Panic!

HECTOR’S minions. This once desirable but later invidious distinction was then quietly forgotten by everyone from bureaucrats to senior counsel, as well as by politicians. It was not until after World War II that Australia moved in several ponderous steps to formalise the absolute independence that it had de facto enjoyed for some time. The constitutional prohibition dates from 1901, when the continent’s fractious British colonies united – New Zealand was invited to the party but declined the invitation – to form the Commonwealth of Australia. Stand-alone Australian citizenship dates only from 1986, when Canberra finally cut its last remaining constitutional ties with Britain, to that country’s great relief. (The Queen remains the Sovereign, but the head of state is the Governor-General: Australia is a crowned republic.) The high-profile victim of his own inattention in the present case is Barnaby Joyce, the Deputy Prime Minister, leader of the coalition National Party. There is a by-election on Dec. 2 in his New South Wales electorate. Now Joyce has done the little rain dance that today’s embarrassing flag-waving and mawkish hand on heart clasping requires, and has formally renounced any claim to NZ citizenship, as he should have done long ago, he will almost certainly be re-elected.

A lengthy holiday in faraway places provides great opportunities for reading outside of one’s usual circuit. In Portugal we read The Operators, by Rolling Stone journalist Michael Hastings, the 2010 work that led to the resignation of the then American commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal. Over the break we also read Capote: A Biography, by Gerald Clarke. Capote has always fascinated, not least for his writing regime, mirrored by our own. He turned his life upside down and wrote at night.

The Bali Advertiser was well represented with three columnists doing the rounds and The Diary hanging around the perimeter, as diarists are wont to do. Some of the Diary’s own thoughts on the festival – it’s surely the star of Bali’s festival firmament – can be read at 8degreesoflatitude.com. We were docked a couple of degrees on the media pass slung around our neck. The media organisers were clearly very busy, and must have confused six degrees of separation with those of latitude.

This is not only because the High Court has ruled that seven parliamentarians – including the Deputy Prime Minister – were ineligible to stand for election because they held dual citizenship at the time. They are people whose second citizenships, in some cases unwittingly, reside either in Britain or the formerly British countries of New Zealand and Canada. The original proscription was meant to exclude citizens of foreign (defined at the time as non-British) do-

Feeling Bookish

The highest level alert, level four, implemented weeks ago when the mountain showed seismic and volcanic indications that an eruption might be imminent, led to the usual scaremongering in the Australian press. It also created difficulties – more logical and certainly far more soundly based – in relation to the 100,000-plus villagers removed from their homes and farms on the mountain’s slopes and to travel insurance for tourists, which in the way of the insurance world, suddenly excluded cover for pre-existing volcanic inconveniences.

The ins and outs of Australia’s particularly prosaic version of parochial politics are rarely of more than passing interest, even to Australians, but the constitutional shemozzle highlighted by the dual-citizenship question is perhaps worth more than just the usual response: a harrumph of tedium and a raised eyebrow of confected surprise.

VISA EXTENSION RETIREMENT VISA (MIN 55 YEARS OLD) WORKING VISA (KITAS) ARTIST VISA & MULTIPLE BUSINESS VISA SET UP COMPANY (PT & PMA)

Partisan politics aside, he should be. He was born in Australia. His mother was Australian. His father moved to Australia from New Zealand before Joyce was born. When Papa Joyce jumped the ditch (the Tasman Sea) he did so as a British Subject. He then married an Australian who was also a British Subject, like all Australians of that time. There were separate immigration controls in both countries, but effectively and legally no distinction existed. The legislative changes that made formal aliens of Kiwis (and the British themselves) in Australia were enacted later. And still today, New Zealanders have the right to live in Australia and Australians in NZ.

These exercises, and the opportunity to delve into some of the material you find in the better class of in-flight magazines, sashayed naturally, if somewhat jet-lagged, into the 2017 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. UWRF is always a treat and this year’s was better than ever, on the theme of Origins.

Well, not quite as much, anyway. The authorities reduced the alert level for Mt. Agung to level three on Oct. 29 and the exclusion zone with it to six kilometres. This was on the basis of scientific advice, not that of political science.

The national and provincial authorities deserve credit for the way they handled the immediate situation, and the work of both government and local and overseas charities in alleviating the distress of removed residents has been exemplary. The emergency remains in place. It is a virtual certainty that the mountain will erupt. No one knows when that will be. Now is not the time to drop vigilance as a policy.

Cheers, Monte Monte Monfore, the Californian swimmer who some years ago turned challenging ocean and lake excursions in and around Bali into great charity resources, has died. His body, with head wounds, was found on a beach on Rota Island, in American Micronesia, in late October, in unexplained circumstances. He was living there, it is reported, as a retired gentleman.

Update

Golden Monkey re-opened on Jln. Dewi Sita with small banquettes at the windows, overlooking the passing parade. It is Ubud’s only complete Chinese restaurant. Now they have added a special Dim Sum Sunday. At a cost of Rp.175,000++ [children under 12 half price] and it is completely free flow. A seemingly endless supply of dim sum standards and creations keep coming until you can eat no more. From 11.30 a.m. till 2.30 p.m. Har Gao [steamed whole prawn dumplings], Chicken Feet, Xia Lon Bai [Shanghai pork broth dumpling], Siu Mai [pork and prawn dumpling], Pork Buns, Crystal Dumplings [steamed prawn and chives], deep-fried Duck Spring Rolls, Fried Wontons [pork and prawn] and Fenkow Dumplings, a vegetarian mix of carrot, broccoli and peanuts.

Naughty Nuri’s Seminyak is actually on Jln Mertanadi, Kerobokan. Whilst Ribs are obviously the specialty of this franchise, unlike the original in Ubud they also offer quite an interesting menu of other options [their Fish Wings are sensational]. They are constantly adding new dishes to their menu, a sure sign of a switched on management, never resting on their laurels. The latest ones all have ‘unusual’ names, another quirk of the management but one that never detracts from the taste. Porky Soup, is a bowl of pork ribs, potato, carrot seasoned with Balinese herbs. Potato Crisp Nachos are thin slices of potato fried till very crisp replacing the usual corn chips, they are covered by baked beans, diced tomato, melted cheddar cheese and sour cream. You can also add chicken or pulled pork on top. Then there is the Naughty Pork Quesadilla, once again an interesting creation.

BatuBara is self-styled as an Argentine Grillery. It is Ubud’s secret restaurant, totally hidden from view unless you know exactly where it is? A very narrow street front entrance takes you into a large rear open space. It is directly beside the entrance to the Arma car park on Jln. Pengosekan, Ubud. Argentine cuisine is all about prime cuts of meat cooked in the flame, Asado, a beef barbecue. The cuts of meat that are available each night at BatuBara are displayed on a board, and priced at a cost of per 100gm. As each order takes quite some time to prepare at the grilling area, by Pablo and his crew, the norm is to also order some Argentine entrees to munch on whilst awaiting the main event. Empanadas [half-moon shaped stuffed pastries] are essential, either with a cheese or beef filling, and do not miss their Croquetas, amazing creations with a chicken stuffing. 104Bar & Grill is an Aussie enterprise amongst the Dutch operated bars of Jn, Danau Poso, at the Blanjong end of Sanur. It encompasses what was before two separate restaurants, one of which was Brad Harrison’s excellent little eatery, Elsewhere, which sadly a lack of air-con prevented that one from becoming a long term player. Not so for 104 which has air-con inside and an outdoor smoking area street-side as well. The cuisine on offer is best described as ‘comfort food’, simple dishes that are recognisable by all, no surprises. Burgers that include the essential Aussie [beef, bacon, egg and beetroot], as well as one with chicken or lentils for the vegetarians, Steak Sandwich, onion jam and pepper sauce and the very English Bangers & Mash or Fish & Chips. There are also many finger food snacks for the drinkers at the bar. Daebak is Korean on the Renon loop at Jln. Jok Agung Tresna. The big menu covers all of the traditional Korean dishes plus a few new creations. Kim Chi [cabbage soaked in chilli] is a popular base to many dishes, sometimes just eaten as a side dish, here you can have it in a soup, with noodles or even mixed with the Korean fried rice, their version of Nasi Goreng. Bulgogi is a beef staple of Korean cuisine, it is thin strips of meat that have been marinated before grilling. In view of the current conflict between north and south it is interesting to note that Bulgogi is actually a traditional dish from North Korea but one that has long become adopted in the south as well. Many Japanese dishes have been modified to Korean tastes, sushi and noodles particularly, and are available here.

Happy Chappy on Jln. Raya Pantai Berawa in Canggu has joined the Dim Sum Sunday craze, as have most Chinese restaurants in Bali. All the favourites from their main restaurant on Jln. Braban, Kerobokan [but without the dim sum carts] , Har Gao, Shu Mai, etc. Plus a little bit of fusion, Nutella BakPao, hazelnut flavoured steam buns, now that sounds very tempting? Cubite has opened on Jln. Dewi Sri with its Indonesian street food options. It is another local Indonesian restaurant chain of a style perhaps more suited to city living and working. Customers complete their own food order on the supplied form, what you want and how you want it. There is a large variety of ‘so called’ trendy drinks served here. They continue the questionable practice of presenting them in large glass jars…why? No handles to hold, cream overflow everywhere, makes a good picture but how about customer comfort, or does that not matter anymore? Space for this ad donated by Bali Advertiser NC/NV/U-8 Nov 17

QUICK REVIEW

A Greek Grill! Nostimo has already made its mark in the competitive S e m i n y a k Kerobokan area. Now it attempts to do the same in Ubud. There are now TWO Nostimo restaurants. A Greek Grill; that is what they are. Serving a variety of meats simply prepared on the grill, nothing fancy but very satisfying. Sadly the wonderful Baked Lamb that features at so many Greek restaurants world wide is financially impossible to replicate in Bali. The setting is Greek, all blue and white. In Ubud it is under white arches, in the background bouzouki music plays. It is easy to imagine that you are actually in Greece. The only thing missing is the smashing of plates! What better way to begin a Geek meal but with a Mezze Platter? Rounds of warm pita bread, fresh off the grill and a variety of dips, skordalia [a puree of potato and garlic], spicy feta, vinegar octopus, tzatziki [yoghurt with garlic, olive oil and finely diced cucumber], vinegar red capsicum, and olives. Alternately you can just order the dip that you prefer.

: Nostimo.

Souvlaki is large pieces of meat grilled on a skewer. It can be chicken, pork or lamb. Gyros is familiar to anyone who frequents late night takeaways almost anywhere in the world. A vertical rotisserie, the meat revolving around a centre spindle, the cooked edges being constantly trimmed off and placed in a wrap of pita bread, ++.

Almost every cuisine in the world has one dish, always popular, that uses simple ground or minced meat. The Aussies have their Rissoles, Italians Polpette, French Hache, the Dutch with their Frikandel and in the Baltic States Cevapcici. Whilst the Americans created the Hamburger they are amused by what the English call meat balls, Faggots. Here in Bali it is the humble Bakso. In Greece it is Soutzoukaki, quite similar to the Turkish Kofte, minced meat but sausage shaped. The Soutzoukaki Platter [pictured] with its side salad, crunchy wedges, warm pita bread and tzatziki dip is a lunch that I often enjoy at Nostimo. If you want to try a selection of all the different meat types then the Mixed Grill is perfect for you. Gyros, Pork Souvlaki, Chicken Souvlaki and Soutzoukaki, It can be ordered in different sizes depending on the number if persons who wish to share it. The Mixed Grill with Lamb adds Lamb Tenderloin and Chop to the mix.

bouzouki. Overall

: Great value!

For that any time of the day snack you can order any of the meats or a portion of grilled vegetables wrapped in warm pita bread. Alternately that Soutzoukaki mince [two plump sausage shapes] can be had between layers of ciabatta that has been toasted on the grill, now that is what I call a sandwich!

Salads are traditional Greek or Chicken, feta cheese can be normal or grilled, a plate of grilled vegetables or pan-fried halloumi cheese. As with most cuisines from the Mediterranean there are many vegetarian options. Melitzana [eggplant] comes with a tomato sauce, topped with béchamel and basil. Soups can be Chick-Pea or Lentil, The Vegetarian Platter consists of skewers of zucchini, eggplant and tomato served with corn, mushrooms and green salad.

Dessert is a Greek Halva, which is semolina with almonds. cinnamon and vanilla ice cream. There are many styles of coffee including the Greek Frappe, either iced or hot. A small but reasonably priced wine list, by glass or bottle, and the option to BYO [with corkage of course]. Welcome is with that Bali smile so common in Ubud where everything moves just that little bit slower, the real Bali!

Seafood is either fresh local catch from the grill or that Greek specialty, Grilled Octopus served simple, with just olive oil and lemon. However it is meat from the grill that most come for at this Greek restaurant.

So the next time you want to visit Greece come to Nostimo instead, and you will think you are really there, just close your eyes and listen to the music. Nostimo offers simple uncomplicated food and great value. It is a most pleasant place to while away an hour or two.

Komang is the President of International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) Indonesia and the creator/director of Bali’s bodybuilding championship Muscle Beach Bali. Komang was the subject of an award-winning 2009 documentary Earth Meets Wind.

What was your childhood like? I was born and grew up in Denpasar. Throughout my childhood, my parents educated me about Balinese culture and mythology. These stories highlighted important traits of character and the value of respect. My father embraced Balinese religious beliefs and the concept of Tri Hita Karana - the three pillars of Balinese living – in order to maintain a harmonious balance between society and nature. I practice these principles daily to harness positive energy that comes with maintaining this harmony.

body. It’s a constant battle between mind and body. I never step onto the stage with the intent to beat the other competitors. Competition is the ultimate arena to find out what I am capable of, my ultimate test of self. It’s a personal challenge to rise to the level of success that I aspire to. I don’t have an on-season or off-season. My practices are very much ingrained into my lifestyle and daily habits. I am always in a state of readiness to compete.

How did you first get into bodybuilding?

Do you sponsor any events?

I started bodybuilding when I was 14 years old and practiced martial arts with my two brothers. Our amateur regimens soon became more disciplined after we joined a club offering free Karate lessons to kids. Once I attained a Black Belt and competed in local competitions, my Sensei suggested that I combine Karate instruction with weight training. Since my family didn’t have enough money for me to join a gym, I made my own barbells and dumbbells out of steel rods and cement.

I organize the bodybuilding competition Muscle Beach Bali - a.k.a. Bodiku fitness event - every two years. Attended by a diverse audience of local residents and tourists. This international event combines bodybuilding presentations with high-energy dance performances, martial art routines plus a bikini fashion show. MBB is my contribution to the general public in line with the Tri Hita Karana philosophy. I hope that the lifestyle promoted by MBB has a positive impact on competitors’ confidence and also inspires people to become the best version of themselves and reap the rich rewards of a fit and healthy mind and body.

What is your training philosophy? Over the past 20 years, I have applied my knowledge and personal experimentation to fine tune many different strategies into what works for me. A personal goal is to feel my best at all times and to live a healthy life. To achieve this, it’s important to understand how my body works, what food and lifestyle habits I can apply to help me perform at my best and to maintain a positive attitude and good quality of sleep. What exactly is a drug free competitor?

Why is it important to keep fit? Keeping fit enables one to handle stress more effectively, which in turn helps to have a positive outlook on all aspects of life. Confusion or doubt is to be out of focus. Physical movement helps in maintaining a clear focus on what we want to achieve. As a result, a hectic day at work becomes more of a challenge than a hardship. I would like to see Indonesians become as health conscious as Westerners. In many Western countries, fitness is a big part of the culture and diet is very important.

How do you prepare yourself for a competition? Bodybuilding is an ego driven sport. Throughout my career from 2003 to 2008, I always considered my own ego as my greatest rival when pushing myself beyond the limits of my

In 2011, I sponsored a clean-up Bali campaign known as Tas Pasar (“Market Bag”), initially inspired from a conversation I had with David Eagles. Bali is facing an environmental disaster with the overuse of plastic bags. Many people burn plastic bags and the smoke is highly toxic and can cause serious health problems including cancer. With the objective of addressing Bali’s severe rubbish problem, we produced a new reusable shopping bag made from durable fabric. This allows local residents to refuse plastic bags in favor of our re-useable cloth bag designed to hook conveniently onto motorbikes. The use of our bags has since spread all over the island. How can readers help with your public fitness campaigns? We welcome any sponsors who would like to support our athletic objectives. The Muscle Beach Bali event has become an ideal platform and role model for future Indonesian champions. MBB highlights businesses who contribute positively to the community. With the right thinking and support, we all have the power within us to become a champion!

Has diet played any role in your success? My extended study and experimentation as a fitness professional has transformed me from my former “bodybuilder” mindset of ‘Live to Eat’ 180 degrees to an ‘Eat to Live’ mentality. To perform at an optimum level your body has to be in a state that allows absorption of the nutrients you consume. My daily workouts help to develop a state of mind and physical condition that maximizes this. I mostly eat organic and nutrient rich ingredients that also serve to heal and support internal organs.

People are often skeptical when they read that I am a lifetime drug free athlete. Taking performance enhancement substances such as steroids simply does not fit into my personal philosophy. Leading up to a competition, my focus is only on what I have to do with the circumstances that I face to win. Not having ideal food, finances or a workout atmosphere is irrelevant. I perceive any limitations as a personal challenge, then turn them into my strengths. I concentrate on an ‘anything is possible’ mindset. My mind convinces my body to support my visualization of what I want to achieve.

33 The Courage to Say No - the Courage to Quit Ever since I was a little girl, my mother always taught me to never be a quitter, because if I quit that meant I didn’t really give it my best shot. Whatever difficulties arose in a situation, no matter how much I didn’t like my job or being friends with someone, I felt I had to stick it out to the bitter end, and so I did. I think for women in particular it’s hard to say no. We’ve been conditioned to be ‘good girls’. By societies’ definition this means we must acquiesce and not put up too much of a fuss. If we just go with the flow everything will be fine. This ‘Yes girl’ program took me several decades to completely erase. Now in my 50’s I am saying no more than I have ever said in my entire life. It’s like I’m making up for lost time. Something deep within me is shouting, “Don’t be a YES girl anymore! You deserve to nurture yourself so if you have to say no, say no!” The little girl inside of me is jumping up and down with joy because I’m finally listening to her wants and needs. She was shushed by me for far too long. Okay in all honestly, not everyone will respond well when you say no. Some people will accuse you of being self centered and unkind, or call you a number of names because you have dared to refuse them. They will even try to make you feel wrong or guilty for not saying yes to their request or demand. When I was younger that would have really upset me and prevented me from saying no, but now I’m not fazed by other people’s opinions of me. I realize that I spent too many years worrying about what other people think and not enough time honoring what is true for me. Saying no is like a breath of fresh air. I can feel my Spirit getting stronger each time I say no. It’s like I’m giving myself a gift of Self love and acceptance with each and every no, because I am choosing not to say yes just to make someone else happy. When I do say yes, I feel it’s a genuine yes that comes from the heart and not from a place of guilt or obligation. It is from this space that I can give of myself freely without resentment or depletion.

What is the gift of quitting? Recently I had a friend call me because she was really agonizing over a decision about whether to stay in her Kundalini yoga training or quit? She shared that she didn’t want to run away from the training if there was something uncomfortable within her that was rising to the surface that she needed to go through but might be avoiding. After a few minutes into our conversation, it became crystal clear that the training wasn’t right for her. It was causing her body tremendous pain and suffering and she intuitively knew that this wouldn’t facilitate more deepening of her practice – in many ways it was contrary to her whole philosophy of yoga, which was to be gentle to the body and being. Many tears were shed as she realized that it was okay for her to quit the training, because it wasn’t right for her on numerous levels, yet there was still a part of her that feared she might regret it later.

C/HE/I-8 Nov 17

The next morning she went to the yoga center and told her teacher that she decided to leave the program. Her teacher was very understanding and respected her choice, saying that if she ever changed her mind she was always welcome back. Then another woman from her training came up to her and said, “I could feel that you were going to leave. You’re an amazing woman, Katie. You have so many gifts that you don’t really need to be in this training. It’s not right for you and that’s okay.” Katie felt relieved and grateful to hear this woman’s kind words. She got into her car to drive five hours back to her hometown and began singing with joy. A few days later she emailed me to say that she felt so much peace about her decision to leave her yoga training. Sometimes it can take a great deal of courage to say no or quit especially when we have to make an important choice in our lives. I find that the more we practice saying no the easier it gets. This is how we can start creating healthier boundaries with our children, friends, parents and loved ones. People don’t know your boundaries unless you let them know. It’s quite natural for children especially to push our boundaries, but I have also experienced this with friends. The more I am clear about what I will or won’t do, the more that other people in my life will understand what they can or can’t expect from me. Of course it’s still wonderful to be kind and caring to others and give of ourselves, but we must remember that we need to fill our cup up to overflowing first, and then there will be plenty of water to flow into other people’s goblets. If we always say yes and continuously empty our cup for others, we will become depleted and resentful – ultimately this is being unkind and disempowering to ourselves. If you said no instead of yes to someone, what change could that create for you and for him?

SICK AGAIN…..Is it Really the Weather? When it’s cold and raining one day, and dry and warm the next, does the changing weather make you feel sick, crazy, ill, achy, or all of the above? If so, you are quite normal. Changes in weather systems can have a lot of effects on the human body and brain. A lot of the science on how weather affects health focuses on static weather states: cold temperatures, rain, hot weather, and so on. But it’s when the weather systems are changing that the implications for our bodies get really interesting. Weather, after all, is rarely in one state for a long period of time and the shifts between states have consequences for our sinuses, joints, hearts, and lungs.

Heart attack specialists probably keep a close eye on the dropping thermometer. When it comes to asthma, it seems that the shift itself is actually the problem. Fast-dropping temperatures (for instance before a thunderstorm) can wreak havoc on asthma sufferers, as a sudden shift that cools the airways very fast apparently exacerbates asthma symptoms. One study found a three percent increase in asthma hospital visits on days following thunderstorms. Moving between indoor cold air-conditioned spaces and outdoor warm weather can also have this effect.

It seems that that falling barometers and sudden temperature shifts are genuine migraine triggers, (my Mother swore by this!). Approaching hot weather in particular appears to be a serious problem: for every nine degree temperature increase in Fahrenheit, the risk of a migraine among sufferers apparently increases by 7.5 percent. Frequent migraine sufferers sometimes require steady climates without significant change, to reduce the nasty possible effects of swift weather alterations. 2. Heart Attacks And Asthma Are Linked To Cooling Weather Cold weather in itself is a poor time for heart problems, because cold weather narrows blood vessels and restricts blood flow. Studies show that we can actually track the likelihood of heart attacks in a certain areas by tracking the environment’s lowering of temperature. These studies show that a drop in daily temperature by as little as one degree Celsius corresponded with an additional 200 heart attacks.

So it’s worthwhile doing more regular blood sugar checks during extreme weather changes. 6. Humidity

As if all of that weren’t enough to leave you feeling exhausted, humidity can also wreak havoc on your sinuses, as high humidity causes both dust mite populations and mold colonies to grow.

Okay so we don’t get cold snaps, chills and alike in Bali, but enough of us fly across the globe exposing ourselves to extreme changes in weather over relatively short periods of time.

1. Barometric Pressure And Rising Heat Cause Migraines

Diabetics can have more trouble controlling their blood sugar during cold fronts. Blood viscosity, or thickness, increases during cold fronts, making it more difficult to keep blood sugar at stable levels.

That steamy feeling that washes over you when you step outside is all thanks to the humidity in the air. It can wreak havoc on your body when you’re trying to stay cool. With all of that sweat that your body is pumping out, you’re losing water, salt and minerals.

One big culprit is air pressure: an increase in air pressure (a rising barometer) means better weather, while a drop means cold and rain. But temperature is a culprit too; we’re acutely sensitive to shifts in heat and cold, and our body reacts accordingly.

So here are the ways in which fluctuations in weather may be exacerbating your health conditions and making your life a bit miserable:

5. Blood Sugar

7. Do changes in weather give you a cold or weaken your immune system?

3. Shifting Barometric Pressure Might Cause Joint Pain And Headaches Barometric pressure drops in colder weather, and the downward shift in pressure is theorized to cause the soft tissues of the body to expand very slightly, causing pain from increased pressure in arthritic, sensitive joints. When it comes to barometric pressure and headaches, it appears that the problem is a difference in pressure between the air on the inside of the head and the outside. The resulting pressure gap can cause significant sinus pains and engender head-splitting aches. 4. Barometric Pressure Also Worsens Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is a particularly terrifying condition where the body actually stops breathing during sleep, due to muscular collapse on the airways or some kind of airway blockage. This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, since the most common treatment for sleep apnea is to wear a CPAP device or mask, which stands for continuous positive airway pressure. The mask’s air is calibrated to be slightly higher in pressure than the outside atmosphere, which keeps airways open.

No. Temperature changes do not create more colds or weaken the immune system. Warming or cooling weather can create problems, but it’s not responsible for the viruses themselves or your susceptibility to them. The cold/ flu virus can replicate more rapidly at colder temperatures, so you’re more likely to get ill once temperatures drop and stabilize there.

36 What to do when your Volcano bubbles but won’t go off? Lessons for Bali from Mount Pinatubo 1991

Just nine hours prior to writing this, on 29 October, news came that the Volcano Alert for Bali’s Mt. Agung had been lowered from Level 4, in effect since 22 September, to Level 3; indicating that the danger of an eruption at any moment had been lowered from crtitical to serious. Authorities reduced the Exclusion Zone from 12 km to 6 km, allowing large numbers of the almost 140,000 evacuated Balinese villagers to return to their homes. Not before time it seems, as Level 4 had been in effect for 38 days and nothing had happened and already some 4,000 farmers and villagers had quit the 390 odd camps scattered across the island. Unfairly, if understandably, feeling they had been misled and their lives disrupted because the mountain had failed to erupt. That’s the thing about volcanoes - you can never tell exactly when, if and how they will go off. Some with a great big bang like Mt. St. Helen’s blowing itself in half in 1980, others with a slow ooze of lava over decades like Big Island, Hawaii. Volcanoes are by no means the most lethal of natural disasters, largely because they don’t move and, unlike their deadlier cousins, earthquakes and tsunamis, today you get plenty of warning if things are hotting up. That’s why volcanoes kill far fewer than other major natural disasters. But, in the wrong combination that could change. When a volcano erupts explosively and, if that eruption blows the side off the mountain instead of the top, and - if a pyroclastic tsunami of toxic gas and volcanic material travelling over half the speed of sound envelops a densely populated city, say. Think Mt Rainier exploding horizontally in a North Easterly direction like Mt St. Helens, one of the most cataclysmic detonations in modern history but with a death toll of just 57, and what would that do to the Seattle/Tacoma area do you reckon? In 1902 Mt Pelee in Martinique, an island one fifth the size of Bali, erupted explosively wiping out the capital St. Pierre killing 30,000 people or 15% of the population. More recently in 1985 the killer Mt. Nevada del Ruiz in Columbia blew for the fourth time in modern history destroying the town of Armero nested below and killing 23,000 of its citizens. Perhaps the most important lessons for Bali may be learned from the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo on Luzon Island in the Philippines in 1991, when the second largest volcanic eruption of the last 100 years, and by far the largest explosion to affect a densely populated area, occurred. The eruption produced high-speed avalanches of hot-ash and gas, giant mudflows and a cloud of volcanic ash hundreds of miles across. The effects of which continue to this day. The point for Bali is that, cataclysmic as this explosion was, the death toll of 847 was relatively modest. It could easily have been in the tens of thousands. The reason for this being advances in modern vulcanology were applied and heeded, the local population was evacuated and most pertinent of all, that the mountain blew up on cue. If it hadn’t, as indeed we see here in Bali, you can’t expect to remove people from their homes and livelihoods for very long and nothing happens. They don’t stand for it. It’s a dilemma we’re going to need to face. Following a major earthquake in the region in 1990 Mt. Pinatubo had shown signs of increasing of activity, but otherwise appeared to be continuing its 500-year slumber. In March and April 1991 magma rising to the surface from more than 30 km beneath the mountain triggered small earthquakes and caused powerful steam explosions blasting three craters in side of the volcano. Thousands of small earthquakes were logged beneath Pinatubo through April, May and June and thousands of tons of toxic sulfur dioxide were emitted. By mid-June the first

magma reached the surface and millions of cubic tons of gas-charged magma exploded spectacularly. Two days later more magma reached Pinatubo’s suface and the volcano exploded in a cataclysmic eruption spewing more than 5 cubic kilometres into the atmosphere (picture that covering the entire state of Rhode Island 2 metres deep with concrete). The ash cloud rose 35 km into the air. At lower altitudes the entire region was covered in a blanket of volcanic ash of sand, glass and volcanic mineral. Fine ash fell as far way as the Indian Ocean and the ash cloud circled the world several times. Most lethal were huge avalanches of searing hot ash, gas and pumice that sped down the mountain at enormous speed filling valleys and burying villages. The eruption emiited so much magma and rock from below the volcano that the summit collapsed to form a large depression or caldera 2.5 km accross.

C/He/I-21 Dec 16

Following the eruption thousands of roofs collapsed under the weight of ash made wet by heavy rains. Ash deposits from the eruption created by the monsoon rains became giant mud flows (lahars) that covered fi elds and villages to caused more destruction than the eruption itself. It was fortunate that scientists from the Filipino vulcanologists and the US Geological Survey could forecast the eruption saving thousands of lives - but the eruptions changed the face of central Luzon, home to about 3 million people. 200,000 evacuees from the more distant lowland areas subsequently returned to their homes and within five years the villages, rice paddies and sugar-cane fields not buried by lahars had recovered. Large covered areas will remain useless for many years to come. Some 20,000 highlanders living close to the volcano were completely displaced and remained in settlement camps for up to a decade.

Indonesia and Bali appear to be doing a good job monitoring and taking the necessary action to prevent risk of a large death toll. The question remains, what do you do if the Bali’s holy mountain chooses not to play ball and does not go off when it should, but waits until all the displaced people lose patience and go home – and then the balloon goes up? I guess if things don’t just settle down for another 50 years we have to hope for a small non-explosive eruption that goes upward and not landward and without the destructive pyroclastic flows and ensuing lahars. As for tourism not being affected in an island the size of Bali? Dream on. Remember how not so long ago aviation in Europe came to a virtual stand still for inside of a month because of a not so very explosive volcanic eruption in Iceland with nary a life lost, but an economic cost of billions? One last sobering thought. Dramatic as they are volcanic eruptions are the least lethal of all natural disasters. Mainly because you know one may be on its way and most volcanoes are not in densely populated areas. No, nature’s No.1 killers and economic destroyer are earthquakes and tsunamis and no one’s yet found the way to predict them. Unfortunately we’re slap bang just a few 100 kilometres from a major tectonic fault and I’ve yet to hear of ‘Tsunami Tourism’. It’s hard to see what more the authorities can do but pray and plan for an aftermath. As for the rest of us we might give a thought to our nearest high places.

Local News Indonesian authorities lower Bali volcano alert status The alert level for a rumbling volcano on the Indonesian resort island of Bali that forced more than 100,000 to flee has been lowered, Indonesian authorities said on Sunday (Oct 29), but there is still a chance it could erupt. Volcanic activity in Mount Agung is slowing and the volcano’s status has been lowered from level four “danger” to level three “alert” by Indonesia’s volcanology centre. The agency said villagers whose homes are located further than 6km from the crater could return home, but warned that the mountain, which has been shaking for months, had not quite come to a standstill. “The volcanic activities have not completely calmed down and there is still a potential for an eruption,” the agency’s head Kasbani, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said in a statement. Mount Agung, 75km from the tourist hub of Kuta, has been rumbling since August, sparking fears it could erupt for the first time since 1963 and triggering the highest possible alert level in September. More than 133,000 people have been living in shelters for more than a month in fear of an eruption, even though more than half of the refugees actually live outside the danger zone. Officials estimated Mount Agung’s increasing activity had cost Bali at least US$110 million (S$150 million) from the hit to the tourism sector and loss of productivity while villagers were staying at shelters. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. In 2010, Mount Merapi on the island of Java erupted after rumbling since 2006, while Mount Sinabung on Sumatra island - which is currently also on the highest alert level - has been active since 2013. [Straits Times October 29, 2017] Volcano experts outline future scenarios for volcanic Mount Agung The head of the subsection for the Volcanic Eruption Mitigation Agency (PVMG), Devy Kamil Syahbana, has explained that based on recorded data, the magma reservoirs below Mount Agung in Bali have not managed to find a outlet on the mountain’s surface. Quoted by Metrobali.com, Devy said on Monday, October 23,2017, “At this time, the magma is still insufficient to penetrate the surface. There is still a cover that is stronger than the power of the subterranean magma. The magma continues to battle against this protective layer.” Based on this factor, theoretically there are three possible scenarios regarding the future of Mount Agung. First, said Devy, if there is a new supply of magma the reservoir will be reenergized to continue its journey to the surface. “If this happens,” he said, “then the potential of an eruption in the near term is possible.”

Dutch man arrested in Bali for allegedly importing cannabis extract A Dutch man has been arrested in Bali and is being transferred to Jakarta after law enforcement discovered he had been running a “green” business on the island for the past two years, allegedly exporting cannabis extract into Indonesia from the Netherlands. Two kilograms of cannabis concentrates, more commonly referred to as cannabis extract was reportedly secured as evidence from a Dutch national whom police have identified as “Max.” The 37-year-old was arrested at a villa in Batu Belig, North Kuta in the early hours of Sunday morning, around 12:30am. It’s understood that the suspect was arrested as he was about to receive a shipment of cannabis extract. Popular uses of extracts include management of stress and anxiety, along with the treatment of a number of physical ailments. “He is being taken to national police police headquarters for further investigation. There were seven officers from headquarters, escorting him,” Merdeka quoted an unidentified police source as saying. After being apprehended, Max was taken to a Bali Police station in Denpasar, but he is just “in transit” there, according to Merdeka’s police source. “There is no investigation by (Bali) Province police. They are just helping coordinate to bring the suspect to national police headquarters,” the source said. Jakarta was apparently the point of entry for the drugs. “The drugs entered through Jakarta, then went to Bali and would have been circulated by the suspect.” The Dutch man had been on police’s radar for some time and had been living in Bali for the past two years. Bali Police’s Deputy Narcotics Director, Supt. Sudjarwoko confirmed the Dutch man’s arrest and that the case was being handled by national police.

The second possibility, if there is a new supply of magma, but in a small quantity, then the magma will cause more earth tremors, but only on a small and continuing basis. Adding: “In this instance, then the possibility of an eruption in the near future remains small, but the chance of an eruption in the long term will continue.” The third scenario, Devy outlined is if there is no new supply of magma, then a “de-gassing” process will occur in which gas seeps from the magma reducing its mobility. “In time, the magma will crystallize and when that happens, the chance of an eruption will diminish,” said Devy. The PVMG is currently evaluating all data from Mount Agung to determine which of the three scenarios apply in the current situation. [www.balidiscovery.com October 27, 2017]

“Yes, it’s true. But it’s headquarters’ case. We are just helping. The suspect has been taken to headquarters,” Sudjarwoko said. Charges do not appear to have been pressed yet as police transfer the man to Jakarta and deepen their investigation. Anti-drug trafficking laws in Indonesia are extremely harsh, with the death penalty being the maximum punishment for the most severe cases. [Coconuts Bali October 30, 2017]

Swimmer’s body found at Rota swimming hole

Underpass construction expected to cause interruptions in water supply for areas south of Bali’s airport

The body of open ocean swimmer Monte Monfore was found on Tuesday afternoon at a swimming hole in Rota, Northern Mariana Islands. Asked for the possible cause of death, a Department of Public Safety police investigator said they are not at liberty to comment on the ongoing investigation as it might jeopardize the integrity of the case. Monfore, 56, was known for swimming for environmental and social causes. Originally from California, he also lived in Bali, Indonesia and had just moved to Rota recently. In an email to Variety, the DPS spokesman, Police Lt. Jason Tarkong, said Monfore’s body was found floating face down at the swimming hole in Pinatang Park, and it was called in by a witness at about 3 p.m. on Oct. 24. Tarkong said police and Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded, and medics conducted cardiac pulmonary resuscitation. The victim was then brought to Rota Health Center where he was pronounced dead, Tarkong added. He said the case is under investigation. [Marianas Variety October 27, 2017] Opening ceremony of Bali Mandara Hospital delayed as Sanur residents protest, demanding more job at the health facility The Provincial Government’s plans for the soft opening of the Bali Mandara Hospital on Saturday, October 28, 2017, were delayed when hundreds of members of the Sanur Community wearing traditional clothing staged demonstrations to disrupt the hospital’s inauguration. The State News Agency Antara said many of the protestors carried signs proclaiming “Sanur Citizens on the March Refusing to be Duped”. They marched from Mertasari Beach to the hospital located on the Bypass in Sanur. The local citizens were seeking the fulfillment of alleged promises that 10% of all employment positions at the new international standard hospital would be given to members of the Sanur Community. I Wayan Maryiana Wandira, the deputy chairman of the Denpasar House of Representatives (DPRD-Denpasar) and a resident of Sanur, told the press that the Provincial Government of Bali must make a written commitment supporting the 10% employment quota. Of the 500 employees recruited to work at the new hospital, only 7 come from the Sanur community, with 4 of that number “newcomers” to Sanur as opposed to ancestral members of the community. The leadership of the Sanur Development Foundation is demanding at least 50 jobs be reserved for Sanur residents. In an effort to stave off further protests, the province is now offering 23 positions at the hospital to Sanur residents. According the NusaBali, on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, the Governor said that 23 remaining vacancies would be reserved for people from Sanur ranging from doctors to administrators to laundry workers, providing qualified candidates in Sanur can be found. The Governor of Bali, meanwhile, denies that any promise of a quota for employment at the new hospital was every made to Sanur residents, holding fast to the principle that the best people for each position would guide hiring. The demonstrations were timed by protestors to coincide and disrupt the opening ceremony for the new hospital. As a result, a long traffic jam was created stretching from the Jalan Hayum Wuruk intersection to an area near the entrance to the Bali Toll Road at Benoa. Hundreds of uniformed police were positioned in front of the hotel as a security measure. [www.balidiscovery.com October 29, 2017] Government announces plan to regulate online taxi hailing system effective November 1, 2017 The Jakarta Globe reports that effective November 1, 2017, new regulations will come into effect regulating online transportation providers in Indonesia. The new rules will regulate minimum and maximum tariffs, require drivers and vehicles providing online service to register with the government, and submit to supervision by tax authorities. The new regulations were announced by a spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications and Information on Thursday, October 19, 2017. The emergence of the online transportation system – including lead operators such as Go-Car, Uber, and Grab – has evoke strong protest from conventional taxi operators who complain the online taxi hailing system represents unfair competition. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said: “We want to create equality. With equality, all stakeholders will be able to live side by side.” Online taxi operators will be now be required to show vehicle and driver registrations as taxis and put an insurance cover in place. While public reviews and discussions are planned in key cities across Indonesia before the November 1st implementation, Denpasar was not among the list of cities listed by the the Jakarta Globe for the socialization of the new regulations. DenPost reports that an estimated 25,000 water customers in South Bali of the water utility – PDAM- may experience service interruptions during the construction of the new underpass at the entrance to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Those who may suffer piped water interruptions in service live in Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Jalan Pratama Tanjung Benoa, and other housing developments in South Bali. I Ketut Golak, the CEO of PDAM Mangutama Badung, said on Friday, October 27, 2017: “Indeed, this area is at the heart of PDAM in South Badung. It is certain that during the project (underpass construction) there will be periods when service is affected, but we have anticipated this situation. There is no need to worry.” Golak said his office has prepared 4 water trucks that are on stand by 24 hours a day should water service be interrupted. If the four trucks are insufficient, he said additional trucks could be utilized from other PDAM offices. A judge slammed Paulus Rozali for his argument when he appeared at the Downing Centre Court in Sydney on Tuesday. Rozali ran down a 68-year-old man in Wiley Park, Sydney’s southwest, causing the man to suffer bleeding to the brain, a fractured skull and fractured femur. Rozali was disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to complete 125 hours community service when he was sentenced in May. He appealed the sentence because he thought it was too severe, Seven News reported. Rozali argued he didn’t stop because drivers in Indonesia would be attacked by witnesses if they ever stopped. He also said he didn’t stop because it wasn’t stated in the NSW driver’s manual. Judge Paul Conlon slammed Rozali for his argument, saying ‘it doesn’t have to be’. ‘It’s basic common sense. When you hit someone, you stop and render assistance,’ Judge Conlon said. While Judge Conlon acknowledged Rozali was remorseful, he said failing to stop and help was a serious crime. Judge Conlon said the original sentence handed down to Rozali in May was lenient, and dismissed his appeal. Rozali will be disqualified from driving until 2020. [Daily Mail October 17, 2017] Bali police cracking down on magic mushroom sellers The Bali Police have arrested three magic mushroom sellers and confiscated 1.16 kilograms of psilocybin mushrooms on Jalan Kubu Anyar in Kuta. The three men arrested on October 22, 2017, were identified by Beritabali.com as Hariyanto (31), Muasin (31) and Suwito (53). The hallucinogenic mushrooms are classified as a Type 1 narcotic in Indonesia punishable by 4-12 years in prison. The more than one kilogram of “magic mushrooms” had been divided across 138 plastic envelopes ready for sale to the public. Also confiscated by police, were an electric blender used to make mushroom shakes and a sum of money. [www.balidiscovery.com October 29, 2017]
