Bali – Traditions not Standing Still Part II When we see a living cultural tradition it’s easy to assume that things stand still but in fact in Bali this is not the case at all. The list of change at the spiritual, religious and ceremonial level is pretty much endless in fact. The most glaring example is a general disregard for the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, a tri-partite concept that stipulates the importance of a human being’s connection with God, other people and the environment (including the creatures in the environment). At the ceremonial level, we see that prayer is very organized and regimented these days rather than something which is a personal spiritual connection, including the unspoken “uniforming” of worshippers (it is simply common knowledge these days that everyone wears white to the temple, yet formerly people simply wore whatever colours they wished). Temple fashion that includes excessive use of expensive jewelry threatens the harmonious relationship with other members of the community. Offerings and ceremonies themselves being made bigger and more lavish is a burden on the socio-economic aspect of families, therefore causing confl ict between humans both within families as well as in the workplace. Finally, and the most obvious to me as an environmental activist, is the destruction of the environment caused by the use of single-use plastics in ceremonies and offerings – objects which were once organic are now made from throw-away plastic and litter temple grounds, land, waterways, beaches and our ocean. Within ceremonies themselves there have been changes – priests use loudspeakers instructing worshippers how to pray, and on numerous occasions I’ve witnessed mass recitation of a prayer as Tri Sandya, which in fact is an Indian verse that has been given Balinese intonation. This is something relatively new that I’ve seen only over the past 10 years or so. According to my Balinese grandmother, offerings used to be a lot simpler and people didn’t put out offerings every day, only on auspicious days such as full moon, new moon, kajeng kliwon, buda kliwon and so forth. The offerings were also made by hand from organic products found in every household such as leaves, fl owers, rice and so forth – these days most people buy offerings that come in plastic bags and have plastic wrapped candies included in them.

Breathing New Life Into Old Boards Sunglasses are a staple in Bali. Aside from the fact that our peepers need protection from harsh tropical ultraviolet rays and glare, no island look is complete without a set of cool shades. Whilst we all recognise the appeal of those brand name knock offs from the market stalls (and at $3 a pop who wouldn’t!) why not choose something that doesn’t add to our island’s prolific plastic pollution problem and opt for a pair of Palm Creation sunnies?
Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.
pouch or cool bamboo cylinder to protect your purchase.
With a penchant for wood and a desire to create something slightly different, this boutique brand began designing shades in 2016 from bamboo, zebra wood and ebony wood. Before long, what began as a creative hobby, grew momentum as those who fancied these hip designs began asking where they too could procure a pair of these fashion forward sunglasses. But it wasn’t until a year or so ago that Palm Creations decided to give these spec designs a more eco friendly edge!
Palm Creation designs are proving popular with their customers too as more stores across the island have begun stocking these signature sunnies. The brand is still in its infancy at this stage but the glasses are gradually forging their way into the ‘Gu scene and a move toward designer phone cases and watches made from the same materials could see the Palm Creation brand develop into something much bigger!
They recognised the rapidly expanding skate scene here in Canggu and came up with a unique idea. Completely embracing the ‘recycle-reuse-reduce’ concept, the brand now uses recycled skate board decks (in addition to the original wooden designs) to create stylish new specs. Entirely hand crafted, cut, sanded and styled, Palm Creation sunglasses breathe new life into these old boards by employing the used decks as the framework for sunglasses and eyeglasses. The effect is indeed quite striking with the various layers of the boards featuring different colours and textures, making no two pairs of sunglasses alike. Palm Creation customers are guaranteed a

Mothers! ….. Move Away From the Kitchen!!
For many countries around the world, the second Sunday in May is a day we dedicate to Mums. It’s important to remember that maternal figures in our lives might not only be our biological mothers, but also step mums, foster mums, adoptive mums, grandmas, aunts, big sisters, teachers, or even friends who have become role models. Whatever the form of your special Ibu, Sunday May 13th is the day to show her just how much she means to you. Renowned for their Sunday Roast, Bistro C, at Finns Recreation Club is carving up some succulent serves from 11am this Mothers Day and there’s even a free glass of bubbles in it for mum too! If one glass is not enough they are also offering a buy 1 get 1 free on bottles of Moet and Chandon Champagne, Cheers we say!
Make Sunday May 13th a ‘dishes free’ affair and pop on down to Finns Recreation Club for a family day out. Not just a chance to get away from the kitchen, they’re all over entertainment options for the kids as well. Grown ups can recline, relax and ‘rehydrate’ while the young ones wear out their energy with free jumping castles, slip n slide, face painting, soccer and more. Do her a REAL favour and book the little ones into Cubby House Kids Club across the road and treat Mum to an hour or three, free from the constant call of “Muuuuuuuummmm!!” For Mum and Dad there will be live music along with footy action on the multiple screens in the a joining Sports Bar. Come for lunch and stay until late and make the most of May’s cooler dry season evenings. Bookings are advisable
and you can reserve a table for your Mothers Day Sunday Roast experience by emailing: bistroc@finnsrecclub.com or by telephone: +62 361 8483939 Looking to earn even more brownie points? Book Mum in for a pamper session at Body Temple Spa. It’s just downstairs from reception so there’s no reason to travel far. Their May specials are just the ticket to get her glammed up and feeling gorgeous. Take this opportunity to show mum how much she matters and give her a day she deserves. Perhaps this year it might be wise to pass on trying to impress her with your own questionable culinary skills in the kitchen (chances are she’ll have to clean up an epic mess afterwards anyways hey kids???) and spoil her island style by booking a table at Finns Recreation Club Bistro C. Love you Mum!

Where can I refill my bottle? Backpackers of yore started the trend to pack their own water bottle and refill it at every opportunity. It certainly is a healthy habit and good for the planet, especially in Bali where tap water is not safe to drink and potable water is sold in throw-away bottles or single-serve cups. If you think of the many discarded water bottles you encounter along the roadways, in ditches, not to mention the dump sites and landfills- it must have struck you how this kind of waste is just out of control. And these bottles or single serving cups are not biodegradable. They just linger and litter, or get washed into the oceans. For sure, they are a big part of the plastic waste problem. Just a few statistics to jar your mind and put a damper on your happy-go-lucky days: In Bali alone, some 5 million visitors traipse through here on a yearly basis, consuming, on average 2 litres of water a day, mostly from those handy throw-away bottles you can buy anywhere. Do a quick calculation and your mind will boggle at the enormous and gargantuan mount of plastic that gets thrown away on a daily basis. The fight against plastic waste has just gotten a tad tougher, yes?
cleaning up after the deluge.
For sure, there are many concentrated and laudable efforts to reduce this type of waste. Bali is awash in beach clean-up campaigns, the Keep Bali Clean and Green crusade, and many informational and educational projects. However, some astute people have realised that the fight is best fought at the source instead of
Several eating venues in Bali have caught on and are offering free water refills to their customers if you bring your own bottle or purchase a fl ask at the premises. It started as a sporadic effort by some eco-conscious
restaurateurs and merchants and it has gained traction, especially among the young, hip and eco-conscious visitors and expats living in Bali. More travellers demand refills instead of buying new bottles each time they need a drink. These initiatives have now jelled into a well-run and proactive effort to streamline the refill idea by a group of likeminded local business people who got together to create RefillMyBottle, an organisation that is in the process of creating an application with the same name that can be easily downloaded on your PC, tablet or smartphone. It is in essence an interactive map of Bali and other places in Indonesia where all locations are clearly shown that offer water refills for free or a small fee if you bring your own bottle. This group is working tirelessly to get places added to the map and their ultimate goal is to grow the refill network in SE Asia first, then worldwide. Already they have expanded beyond Indonesia and signed up locations in Vietnam and Malaysia. They canvas local businesses like restaurants, cafes, resorts, tourist venues, shops, tourist attractions and tourist service providers and induce them to provide refill stations with drinkable water.
At present, some 360 refill stations have been signed up in Bali and Lombok. More are joining on a daily basis and the map is continually updated. There is no fee to join and courtesy stickers and posters are provided to announce the presence of a refill station. Many well-known businesses like Bali Buda, Monsieur Spoon, Bali Diving Academy, Five Elements, Kumpul Co-working Space and many more, have already joined the effort. It’s a win-win situation for both refill stations and users: Free or inexpensive drinkable water for customers, promotion value for the businesses who provide the service and for everyone the gratifying feeling that they have a very positive impact on the environment and are contributing in no small measure to the solution of plastic waste. For businesses interested in joining this stellar program, it

is an easy and free registration at www.RefillMyBottle. com. You will receive stickers and promotional resources to announce your participation in the RefilMyBottle campaign on your social media and website. You decide whether to provide the water free of charge or charge a small amount. Ideally the fee should be less than the price of a bottle of water purchased in the store. You can use commercial water or potable water derived from purification or filtered water systems like Nazava water filters.
For those of you who want to check out the many locations or download the app, you can find it at the same website. You can also connect with RefillMyBottle on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Presently a mobile app with basic functionality is available for Android devices in Google’s Play Store. The people at RefillMyBottle want to expand the app with better features and make it available for all phones. They are currently looking for sponsors to help create this new app and have started a crowdfunding campaign to help them cover the costs of US$6,000 in order to develop a more sophisticated and practical Refillmybottle app. The new app will make it easy for anyone to know where to refill, how many plastic bottles (and money) is saved in the process, as well as to measure impacts and connect the users. You can find more details on their fundraising page: https:// www.youcaring.com/refillmybottle The Bye-Bye Plastic Bag campaign made famous by a couple of teenage girls in Bali has now been joined by the Bye-Bye Plastic Bottle drive of the RefillMyBottle group. It creates a positive impact on the world and is a gigantic step forward in the reduction of single-use throwaway water bottles and cups. Best of all the concept is appealing to young and old eco-warriors alike. The slogan Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, Refill is becoming a stronger and more resonating mantra.

Cyber Bullying Cyber bullying is becoming a serious problem because so many people, especially youth, are online or use mobile devices: 95% of US teens are online, according to the Cyber Bullying Research Center. Online bullying is both easier and harder to stop than conventional bullying. Easier in that a victim can ignore, block or report an offender and that may be enough to stop them. Harder in that cyber bullies are often anonymous, hiding behind screen names or anonymous email addresses. Their cruel or humiliating posts, videos or photos can go ‘viral,’ that is, be spread rapidly and widely across the Internet and even be picked up by news media. (Remembering anything posted in the online world can potentially be out there forever.) Bullying online means that the bully doesn’t actually come face-to-face with their victim and may not realize how harmful or toxic they are being as they don’t see a victim’s response in real-time. A bully, particularly an immature teenager, may strike out in anger and fail to grasp the full consequences of their actions. According to the Cyber Bullying Research Center, about 30% of students surveyed report being the victim of a cyber bully and almost 20% said they had bullied someone else online. A Daily Mail article in 2013 called Facebook ‘the worst social media network for bullying,’ stating that teenagers were the targets of bullies almost 90% of the time. That same year, a The Trolled Nation study of online bullying showed that Facebook was the single worst social network for cyber bullies, with 87% of youth surveyed saying they were bullied on the site. A more recent survey showed that cyber bullies have been migrating to other sites, possibly because of Facebook’s attempts to tackle the problem. Young people now report more bullies on sites such as Instagram (42%) and Snapchat (31%), while Facebook’s share of cyber bullying has dropped to 37%. Facebook seems to be taking the problem seriously, providing resources for dealing with it. Facebook has set up a separate Bullying Prevention Hub on the site, developed in partnership with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The hub offers, according to Facebook, ‘step-bystep plans, including guidance on how to start some important conversations for people being bullied, parents who have had a child being bullied or accused of bullying, and educators who have had students involved with bullying.’ Recently, the social media site released a comprehensive manual on how to prevent online bullying for teachers, parents and students. Titled Empower Educators, Facebook’s new manual offers ‘resources and strategies for educators who have students who are the target of bullying, who want to help a friend who has been bullied or who have engaged in bullying behavior.’ The manual has sections on preventing bullying (‘By building a school wide bullying prevention policy and teaching
emotional intelligence skills to your students, you can help to prevent mean and cruel behavior in the fi rst place.’) and establishing a reporting system (‘Let students know when and how to report issues of bullying.’) The manual shows step-by-step how to deal with bullying, on line or in person, when it happens, offering tips, conversation starters, scripts to use when talking to students or parents and advice on setting up an action plan both for dealing with a bully and their victims. Facebook, in fact, has an entire section on their site, devoted to dealing with the issue of online and personal safety. Open Facebook and type ‘Safety Center’ into the search box. Beyond the topic of cyber-bullying, Facebook also offers downloadable manuals on safety, awareness of mental health issues, online privacy and protecting your information (in PDF form) such as online safety for military families, suicide prevention, eating disorder awareness, safety tips for sensitive information, women’s safety, privacy and safety on Facebook, suicide prevention for law enforcement personnel, Baby Boomer’s guide to Facebook and cyber-bullying. Facebook says it is constantly working to update policies and community standards in order to ‘find the right balance between giving people a place to express themselves and promoting a welcoming and safe environment for everyone.’ Facebook’s Bullying Prevention Hub also contains links to other anti-bullying sites, such as Connect Safely, Family Online Safety Institute, The Bully Project, National Bullying Prevention Center, STOPcyberbullying and more. Another good resource for cyber bullying is Ditch The Label, one of the largest anti-bullying charities in the world, which examines ‘issues including cyberbullying, abuse, online behaviours, online personas, and social media addiction.’ Ditch the Label states they have the ‘largest online bullying support community in the world’ and offers numerous support guides and resources for free through their website, including hundreds of articles on the subject.

Biku was one of the rare few. Full on opening and has been the same ever since. Biku, on Jln Petitenget, does High Teas. So do most major hotels mid-afternoon. At Biku, they are available all day, from 11.00 a.m. till 6.00 p.m. Not just the traditional English High Tea, which they do perfectly, but also an Asian High Tea and even a Children’s High Tea. Now they are celebrating Mothers’ Day, Sunday May 13, with a special Mothers Day High Tea, pictured [@ Rp.165,000++]. Children are not forgotten as there is also a special High Tea for them. For this day a prior booking is essential [online at www. bikubali.com or phone 0851.0057.0888]. As the Sydney Morning Herald [their Tuesday Good Food section is Sydney’s dining bible] recently said about Bali’s Biku…the only downside is that everyone knows that it is fantastic! So always full. I love snacking and Biku also has many options that are just right for me; Spicy Chicken Wings, Vegetable Samosas [with chutney of course], Corn Cakes with avocado salsa, fresh Vietnamese Spring Rolls and great Crisp Sesame Chicken with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. A breakfast with a difference, so healthy, are the Indian Lentil Crepes. Biku is always buzzing! Full of happy customers who you can tell by their manner, have been there before and will soon be coming back again. A unique success story!
For Sale; 40 pcs magnifying mirror, brot, vision chrome, wall mounted, ex hotel, Never been used, Made in France, call or WA 081 139 3315 for inspection. [030]
The Melting Pot, on Jln. Pengosekan, Ubud, is much more than just a sports bar [though one of Bali’s best], it is also Bali’s No.1 Texan restaurant. That description includes a few different cuisines, just all of those dishes that are popular in Texas. New additions on their menu are the very popular Sliders [mini hamburgers]. Hot Link Sliders are a coil of small linked pork sausages, smothered with caramelized onions and a dab of Dijon mustard in a mini poppy seed hamburger bun. The Steak Sandwich Slider is very different, a fold of steak [40gm] with caramelized onions and mozzarella cheese. Most restaurants in Bali offer Sate, usually chicken. At Melting Pot they have Beef Sate, chunks of tender juicy beef with a sweet soy and chilli sauce. There is just one danger, eat one serve of these and you will immediately order another one!
For Sale; Tag Heuer eyeglasses frames. New in box. Original item imported from USA but never used. Men’s or women’s. Dark Red fl exible bows with silver titanium half rim frames. Happy Chappy, Jln Braban, Kerobokan opened with set times for lunch and dinner.
Now they stay open all afternoon so leisurely mid afternoon Chinese banquets have become the norm, as have very long lunches. Quality Chinese, concentrating on Cantonese, their Sunday Dim Sum lunch [from 11.00 a.m.] features food trolleys, still the only one in Bali. There are many dishes here that I like very much. Top of my list is their exceptional Sang Choy Bow, minced duck with plum sauce served on cos lettuce leaves. This is closely followed by the Salt & Pepper Chicken which is also a great bar snack, as are the Peking Duck Long Rolls. The Kung Pao Prawns with Szechuan chilli and cashew nuts uses large prawns, excellent! The Singapore Chilli Live Crab and the traditional Roasted Peking Duck are essential for any banquet. Specials for the month of May include Beef Short Ribs, a must to try! A mini version of Happy Chappy is soon to open on Raya Ubud.
Burritos by Goodwood is one of the latest rave places in the new Canggu, where restaurants are opening almost on a daily basis. Yes they are Mexican based, Tex-Mex in fact, but offer a lot more than just burritos. They are found on Jln, Pantai Berawa. These burritos though are different, stuffed with your choice of chicken, pork or beef, all the meats are smoked. Served with the usual guacamole, cheese, corn and beans. There is even a Vegetarian Burrito for those who want to stay Veggie. Other Tex-Mex options also available, The big rumour is that Burritos by Goodwood are soon to also open in Ubud. White Yellow has been the most successful restaurant, so far, to operate on Jln. Sukma, Tebesaya. They have also taken a stand in the new Ubud Food Court even though their own restaurant is only metres away, on the same road. At the UFC they offer both interesting snacks and main meals, all at food court prices. As they serve very traditional Balinese fare it is no surprise that the popular Ayam Sambal Matah heads the list. Ayam Ukup Ukup is most unusual. First the chicken is grilled with a traditional Balinese spice paste then it is boiled with the same mix until the liquid is reduced to half. Kare Ayam is chicken in a fragrant coconut milk curry. Be Balung is pork, gently simmered in spices, served with boiled jackfruit. To finish Tape Gulung, fermented cassava cake topped with rolls of small, very crisp, crepes. Curry in Bali has opened on the old site that was once Warung Kayu Api, on The ByPass in central Sanur. After testing the water at Uluwatu for a few years they now bring this concept to Sanur. Indian with a difference as the menu concentrates on food from southern India, Kerala in particular, which is where the owner originates. A thick creamy Seafood Soup is full of prawns and fish pieces, the Vegetable Rolls are Indian bread rolled around fresh vegetables served with mint chutney. South Indian style potato masala is made with boiled, crumbled potatoes in mild, flavorful gravy. It is served with hot, puffed Puri’s. (Deep fried Indian wheat bread). Chicken Livers are marinated in spices, then pan roasted with onions & tomatoes. Kerala Beef Fry is a classic from this mostly non-Hindu Christian area. The star of this menu must be their Crab Masala, thick and rich.

Interesting Menu Soul in a Bowl may have suffered from a few hiccups in its early days but that is not the case today. It is now firing on all cylinders. It is a small pleasant space with very professional management and a menu that makes me smile. What a change from my early look at this strip in Sanur, 25 years ago, there were, as today many restaurants but all then seemed to have identical menus, mostly consisting of ‘foreign’ food, as seen by the locals. Sanur was boring! What a contrast to today’s offerings and Soul in a Bowl is right up there amongst the best. All of their gluten-free items are so marked, another sign of professional management who actually know what they are doing. It is open early [8.00 a.m.] for breakfast, which goes almost all day. There are standard breakfasts [no serious restaurant in Bali can offer breakfast without the very basic Bacon & Eggs]. Here the bacon is double smoked, the pork sausage spicy, and the toast is sourdough with toasted tomato and mushrooms on the side. And there are many other tasty options, many of which that are also healthy. I am always attracted to unique breakfasts, for me it is just about the most important meal of the day. The first item I noticed was the Corn & Dill Fritters. A good start not only with poached eggs on top but with snap peas, feta cheese and watercress added, as well as a lime dressing, I could not wait to try it. Excellent! As the name suggests there are many dishes here that are served in a bowl. At breakfast time there is their signature dish, Soul in a Bowl; red dragon fruit, papaya, apple and tangerine topped with banana, star fruit, roasted coconut, honey and flax seeds. A daytime salad is their Mediterranean Bowl, organic couscous with quinoa, cucumber, daikon, parsley, olives, tomato, roasted capsicum, feta cheese, falafel, hummus, pumpkin, sesame and flax seeds with a lemon tahini dressing. Not only are they super healthy but as a bonus they also taste great! In fact ‘food with taste’ is my overall summing up of the food on offer at Soul in a Bowl. Snacking appeals to me as does that section of this menu. The Duck Rice Paper Rolls are perfect. A variation of this
QUICK REVIEW Vietnamese special is now on many Bali menus, but sadly the wrapping too often almost like chewing plastic, Here they get it right, as they do with all their other menu items. The duck meat is combined with cucumber, carrot and basil inside the rice paper wrapping, then drizzled with a rather subdued Thai nahm jim sauce, very, very good! The most amazing offering on the small plates list is their Salt & Pepper Squid, another that often appeals on the menu but ends up tough and leathery. Again here it is quite sensational, just enough ‘chew’ but never to be called tough, small crumby pieces served with a garlic aioli and tomato chutney, perfect with a drink or two. The Lamb Kofta is served almost sate style on skewers, the well spiced minced lamb combined with harissa, lemon olive oil and mint. The Pop Style Corn Fritters, with just a touch of chilli, are also a great bar snack. As are the Beef Sliders [mini hamburgers], three on the plate with caramelized onion. For the vegetarians; the Trio of Dips, Tomato Bruschetta or Falafel, all are very healthy, but still with taste!

A big variety of Salads include those with duck and yellow fin tuna, the Hawaiian Shaka Shaka is passion fruit grilled chicken with Japanese rice, red radish and cabbage, corn, avocado and cucumber. There are also pure vegetable salads, including a Pumpkin and Barley. Sandwiches [smoked bacon, ham, chicken breast, roasted pumpkin and capsicum with Dijon between sourdough toasted slices], pasta and burgers that include a Mac & Cheese Burger and a veggie Kale Burger complete the lunch time menu section. Dinner time sees many of the early course options retained. Heavier mains include the universally popular Lamb Shank [from NZ, braised in red wine, rosemary and tomato]. Seafood options can be Tuna or Herb Crusted Barramundi or that standard of English dining; Fish and Chips! Then there is a fusion of Bali and Singapore, Duck Laksa, nice and spicy. As is necessary a selection of local dishes are also included, Opor Ayam is one the stars of Indonesian cuisine, if prepared properly; first steamed with spices then finished off with coconut milk in the wok. Sticky Chicken, a strange name but an interesting taste! Soul Ketoprak is a Javanese vegetarian option; rice vermicelli, bean sprouts, green beans, crisp tempe, rice cake, baby potato, purple sweet potato and fresh chilli with peanut sauce. Soul in a Bowl is a perfect sample of the new Sanur, I like it! Food with taste!

Say What? Question: I have less of a current problem and more of a preventative question. I was recently accepted into the university of my choice, but it is halfway around the world from all my friends and family, and I have never been very good at keeping in touch with people. Instant messenger and Facebook help, but I still seem to fall out of contact with people fairly quickly if I can’t phone them and hang out every once in a while. It won’t be exactly feasible to fl y back to Bali except for holidays. Do you have any tips on how to keep long-distance contacts intact aside from emails every so often with a “So my biology class is being a biology class. How are you?” Dr. ZZ: Facebook is a lifesaver, through which you can remain connected to friends and family in a fun, lighthearted way without becoming completely immersed in the details of their lives, nor they in yours. It isn’t going to provide you with deep, meaningful connections with absent people, nor will it substitute for proximity and regular hanging out; but it can help keep those avenues of communication open. Build in an expectation from the start that your relationships will change when you move away. People move on and create new memories without you; it often falls to the person who has left to keep communications open. Your friends at home will still have each other, and while they will miss you, they will also change and grow while you are off changing and growing. These relationships will ebb and fl ow. Your goal isn’t to keep them exactly the same, it’s to leave the light on and the door open; so that you can step back into them when you come back home. Congratulations, by the way, on getting accepted to the university of your choice. It’s going to be absorbing, and it will provide you with a brand new crop of friends and interests to throw yourself into. It will go by fast. Question: My former best friend got into a relationship and distanced herself from me for about 4 years. Now, the relationship has ended explosively, she is trying to turn me back into her best friend ever, and I just can’t do it. She
C/E/I-09 May 18
genuinely doesn’t care about my feelings or my needs when she has a need or an upset-even if it means disregarding my stated desire for sleep, for boundaries, for not being interested, or for not wanting to talk about something. Recently, she told me that she would get depressed and paranoid if I didn’t make the effort to chat her up every so often. It doesn’t count if she initiates the conversation; the clock starts only when I seek her out. I have no problem talking with her; I just don’t want to have it mandated by her threats. She seems to be incapable of handling her emotions when she feels hurt or abandoned. Nothing else matters except that people put down everything to make her feel better. I don’t want to cut her off from my life entirely, but I don’t want to be “best friends” with her because I honestly won’t trust her not to cut me dead if her feelings and I were on the line. Is there any way I can stop being her best friend and still be a friend without hurting her feelings? Dr. ZZ: It’s not fair of this friend to saddle you with the responsibility for her emotional well-being. Her threatening to be depressed if you don’t come through is basically her deciding in advance that she will react negatively. She indeed seems to be seeking to manipulate you into doing what she wants. Sadly, there is no way to not hurt her feelings when you
have whatever conversation you are going to have with her about this. Your choices are: 1) Say nothing and feel continually annoyed while she feels depressed and paranoid because she needs something you don’t want to give; or 2) Speak up and tell the truth, which may end the friendship, or may be the turning point that helps you reset your interactions along more honest and equitable lines. Without the truth, the friendship is going to end anyway in a spectacular argument with a lot of hurt feelings; so you might as well choose honesty. Choose to handle your confl icts with her on a case-by-case basis (rather than all at once). Say things like, “Okay, I’m done talking about this. Sorry! We’re going to have to either leave this subject, or one of us needs to leave the room.” You may also want say something to her about the two of you not connecting like you once did, and about your not feeling as close to her as you once did. It’s not going to land well. She will probably get very upset and accuse you of hating her. You do need, however, to create more separation from this person, not to have a long heart-to-heart where you end up more intertwined or apologetic for standing up for yourself. So let her talk and get upset, and hold your ground. She’s asking for way more than is healthy for you to give. Be respectful of the fact that all this will probably be painful for her to deal with; so tread gently for a while. But don’t let yourself get sucked back in. You’re not responsible for how she feels about herself. Period. Keep your cool, settle in for a few uncomfortable weeks, and pat yourself on the back for confronting a challenging situation and for standing up for your own needs.

Far From Boring
by Tony Gwilliam
During his childhood in war-time England, Tony Gwilliam learned to tell the difference between German bombers and fighters over the wailing, searchlight-streaked night skies of London. He vividly remembers Victory gardens, gas rationing books and the shrieks of air raid sirens. He also remembers the extreme frugality of post-war Britain where he first learned his ecological chops. Gwilliam’s book Far from Boring is an eye-witness chronicle of postwar Britain, the early years of the sustainable living movement and the development of environmentally conscious architecture from someone who actually lived it. A singular combination of memoir, earth friendly field manual and ideological manifesto, this diminutive little book is a refreshing and nostalgic read from the moment it is freed from its curious embossed handmade tin box, each copy numbered as if it were a rare lithographic print. The book is an intensely personal story, illustrated with a multitude of photos, snapshots and drawings of the places, friends and events in his life. Beginning with no less than a history of the universe, Gwilliam takes the reader on a zigzagging odyssey through the globetrotting life of a creative Englishman who has explored all four corners of the planet for inspiration. In the process of becoming an architect, Gwilliam meets infl uential mentors who help him along the way. He was in the thick of the very start of eco-living and steadfastly abided by its principles throughout his entire life and career. Reproductions of his birth certificate, astrological chart, black & white photos of parents, baby photos, school report card, childhood homes and his childhood war years attest to a fascinating life accumulating varied experiences, anecdotes and artifacts. Many of Gwilliam’s ideas were revolutionary and quite prescient at the time. His amazing journey covers his architectural education, his discovery of three-dimensional geometry, his travels to the USA and decades-long apprenticeship with Buckminster Fuller, a noteworthy guru of American hippie communes building improvised geodesic domes out of scavenged sheet metal, tarpaper and plywood. Following in Fuller’s footsteps, Gwilliam became an unabashed champion of hard-core environmentally friendly technologies and green alternatives. In California, he founded Tensegrity International and T House. He made a foray into Mexico to build schools, a lecture tour to Australia to promote infl atable structures, his return to UK overland on the “Kathmandu Trail” to London where he taught at the Architectural Association and created the Mantainer suitcase for living and finally to his experiences co-creating the Bloo Lagoon eco-resort overlooking the small seaport of Padangbai in far east Bali. This culminating physical achievement of a life dedicated to sustainable living demonstrates that Gwilliam is not just a man of progressive thinking, but also someone who gets things done. From the start, taking a green approach in his east Bali resort was essential for Gwilliam and his talented wife Marita who took two years designing a sensible, comprehensive micro village, a man-made living organism that offers health to the planet and to its inhabitants. Structures are open and honest, built with consciousness-raising in mind, and all achieved without shouting “We are green!” Though it constitutes more a small work of art than a book, this curious little artifact also contains invaluable tips on sustainable practices. It is a manual of how to build and maintain a green hotel and a treatise on responsible living. His resort aims to reduce its carbon footprint by producing more energy than it uses, distributing the surplus back to the
local power grid. But Gwilliam doesn’t just blindly adhere to environmentally responsible systems if they aren’t practical or logical. The emphasis is always on affordable, natural and effective solutions. In some cases, technology isn’t advanced enough to accommodate his vision. For example, he advises against drilling a well if there’s too much rock or if you have to drill too deep. He’s against installing solar water heaters if they’re too heavy for tile roofs or erecting bulky wind turbines if they’re too noisy.

The book is also a blisteringly honest assessment of Bali’s investment climate in which officials extort by inventing the need for additional licenses and permits at every stage of a project’s construction. Fees for license renewals, each requiring inspections, seem never-ending. Everybody has their hand out.
C/E/G-9 May 18
The ending pages pay tribute to the international mix of 12,000 guests who pass through the Bloo Lagoon each year without whose patronage the resort would not survive. This last section is filled with the joys, regrets, reminisces and triumphs of an old man. He has broken hearts and has had his own heart broken. He gives tribute to people who have infl uenced him - friends, students, teachers, lovers and ex-wives who have passed through his long life, including Eka who “pilfered our monies,” and Ketut “who married his Dutch girlfriend.” The book fittingly ends with a photo from a page in his old Youth Hostel card that he used while roaming the continent in the 1960s. The book’s packaging is fun. If it didn’t contain so much valuable information, this innovatively produced book would merely be termed ephemera in the book trade. Except for the first 30 pages, you have to read the book sideways because the type size is only legible if the pages are oriented in landscape mode. Some text and captions that are superimposed on photos are irritatingly difficult to read, which is frustrating as they contain supplemental information not found in the text. Far From Boring is not just an item of collectible memorabilia with short-term appeal, as its initial impression suggests, but a little treasure with long-term usefulness. A pioneer of earth-friendly architecture, the author takes us on a worldwide multimedia tour starting from the early days of groundbreaking sustainable technology. His memoir’s layout is unique and creatively executed with idiosyncratic visual images that enhance the idealism of this visionary architect who was drawn more to bringing about a hopeful outcome for humanity than to making money. Highly recommended for anyone interested in travel, architecture and the art of sustainable living. Far from Boring by Tony Gwilliam, 1st edition, self-published 2015, ISBN 978-069-248-4470, 528 pages. Available for Rp. 250,000 at Ubud’s Ganesha bookstore.

Mosquito Lady Consulting - Controlling Mosquitoes Without Pesticides Most of us have heard the ominous rumble of the mosquito fogger and been caught in its stinking white cloud of chemicals. I’ve always wondered just what was in the horrible concoction, but until recently no one could tell me. Trudy Rilling-Collins, a scientist with a degree in biological control of insects from University of California Berkeley, filled me in. “From my international experience I’ve learned that virtually all of the chemical pesticides used in fogging and water-based spraying targeting adult mosquitoes are neurotoxins designed to short-circuit the nervous system of the insect. The white cloud you see in fogging is neurotoxic pesticides in a diesel fuel carrier. These pesticides pose some serious human health risks and can damage ocean ecosystems, killing fish and other organisms at extremely low concentrations. And there’s increasing evidence that autoimmune diseases are on the rise and our environmental exposure to toxins and chemicals is fueling that risk.
Despite the intense pesticide fogging and spraying, mosquito populations remained high and guest complaints were common. Trudy spent several days investigating mosquito breeding on the island and then went to the General Manager with a proposal to try a new approach. She suggested environmentally responsible mosquito control without pesticides. He agreed. “Just five days later the resort stopped all of the fogging and spraying of chemical pesticides they had been doing for the past nine years; it was no longer necessary. I checked every container, septic tank and tree hole on the island which took some time, but it quickly reached a point where one trained Mosquito Controller could manage it. The hotel had been spending about US $25,000 a year on pesticides and diesel fuel for fogging and spraying, so this was a substantial saving. Management and guests were delighted.” Trudy continues to consult for resorts and villas in the Maldives, Thailand, Bali and the Caribbean. “Trudy’s environmentally responsible mosquito control projects have been extremely successful at Como Shambhala, Uma and most recently at Amanpuri in Thailand,” says Paul Linder, who has been General Manager at all three resorts. “Trudy and her team are experts at finding and eliminating aquatic breeding sites in order to decrease mosquito populations. By attacking the problem at the source, it’s been possible to eliminate all spraying and fogging of chemical pesticides and adopt a more eco-friendly, environmentally responsible approach to mosquito control.”
“Fogging to control mosquitoes simply does not work. Resorts spraying two or even three times a day for many years see virtually no reduction in mosquito numbers. Fogging and spraying targets winged adults but because mosquitoes become resistant to pesticides quickly, chemical pesticides become ineffective in a very short time. Another big problem is that fogging and spraying of pesticides does nothing to address the root of the problem which is mosquitoes breeding in water. Research clearly shows that one of the best mosquito control strategies is elimination of mosquitoes while they are trapped in water in the larval stage. “I’ve been surprised to find that in my travels around Bali quite a number of places that market themselves as eco-resorts with organic gardens are still fogging for mosquitoes with pesticides.” Fogging and spraying of chemical pesticides is very common across Bali; most people aren’t aware that there’s an effective alternative. But Trudy has proved repeatedly that resorts in the tropics can save much money while effectively controlling mosquitoes without using chemical pesticides of any kind. In 2011 Trudy spent two months on a resort island in the Maldives that measured just 200m x 600m. She was horrified to find that the resort was fogged and sprayed three times daily with neurotoxic pesticides for mosquito control, and that this had been going on for the nine years since the resort was built.
Fogging to control mosquitoes simply does not work. Resorts spraying two or even three times a day for many years see virtually no reduction in mosquito numbers. Trudy, affectionately known as the Mosquito Lady, now works as a Consultant with a local Indonesian company PT Kontrol Nyamuk Hijau offering environmentally responsible mosquito control to resorts, villa projects, businesses and homes. She and her team of five trained technicians painstakingly investigate properties working with engineers, landscapers and maintenance teams and take the necessary steps to eradicate breeding sites. They work with management teams to develop a comprehensive collaborative plan and provide staff education. The Mosquito Lady Consulting Team can perform a preliminary consultation/audit which takes between one day and two weeks depending on the size of the property. The consult can either be a one time stand alone project, or be followed up with weekly checking of the property by the Mosquito Lady Consulting Team. Trudy now consults for several leading hotel chains. She also designs educational workshops to help Balinese understand how to control mosquitoes at work and in their own compounds. Constant follow-up is essential to long term control. “Unfortunately for us, the Aedes mosquito is very highly adapted for survival. They breed in containers and rest in dark, humid, cool places like closets or corners of the garden, making control very difficult. The females lay their eggs in dry areas above the water line. It’s very tricky for the common
homeowner to control mosquitoes because although they lay 150 eggs at a time, they will lay at multiple concealed sites, just a few eggs in 10 or 15 different places.” These eggs are viable for a year in dry conditions and can easily be transported around the world in this dormant state. Within hours of becoming wet, they will hatch. The adult Aedes mosquito lives for one month and can lay 300 - 450 eggs during her lifetime in multiple locations. It’s ironic that Homo sapiens are smart enough to invent all kinds of amazing devices, transplant organs and work all kinds of other technical magic but cannot eradicate mosquitoes. The mosquito is the toughest, most resilient and dangerous creature on the planet. It’s been pretty quiet on the dengue fever front lately, but inevitably the virus will reappear here in Bali. Dengue fever was first recorded in Java in 1969 and since then the number of infections continues to increase annually. According to a 2017 study in Epidemiology and Infection, dengue fever is significantly under-reported in Indonesia. In 2015 the number of infections was reported at between 700,000- 800,000 and hospitalizations at 200,000. More bad news; the female mozzie has evolved to carry the virus from the larval stage, so it’s no longer necessary to bite an infected human in order to spread the disease. I’ve had it twice, so I take dengue fever quite personally. Chikungunya and Zika, the newest viruses on the block, have similar symptoms and are also carried by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the little buzzers which bite early morning and late afternoon. Trudy offered to check my property for larvae. After 25 years in Asia I thought I knew about mosquitoes, but I was shocked by the number of breeding sites she found around my house. After 90 minutes of poking around and investigating I had 11 urgent locations to deal with, with larvae found in the pond overfl ow, vases, gutters, water tanks and certain plants. Trudy’s motto is, “Superior mosquito control with zero pesticide use.” Get the full story at www.mosquitolady.com or email her at trudy@mosquitolady.com

Nom de plume Occasional Articles From Our Readers
Summer Love at Bali’s First Ever International Show April, 22, 2018 By Sharon Karyasa I was captivated as I approached the foyer at Finn’s Recreation Club in Bali. Visitors know they are in for a spectacular day/evening from the moment the efficient smiling staff greet them with warmth and sincerity that can only be found in Bali. I was jittery with nerves, it’s not every day you have the opportunity to interview your teenage pop idol. Daryl Braithwaite, an Australian musical icon who was inducted into the ARIA hall of fame in 2017. Daryl Braithwaite from Sherbet, later known as Sherbs, Daryl Braithwaite from a stellar solo career which includes performing in musical theatre productions, The Who’s rock opera, Tommy and the 1977 musical production of Chess, in our beloved Melbourne, Australia.
Good hearted locals, expats & visitors were pumped and ready to be entertained. The impressive Splash Water Park was open and provided a space for a refreshing dip. Ross Wilson was up next. Dancing down memory lane, reminiscing of carefree fun days, we sang out loud to “Eagle Rock” with our tribe. Pseudo Echo followed as the music continued to ignite our nostalgic imaginations. I was distracted, it was time for my interview with Daryl Braithwaite. Daryl is a gentleman. Daryl is also a Bali Lover, he is a Surfer and has visited our Paradise Island many times, he had already been out for a paddle three times since he had arrived. His music appeals to a vast audience and seems to have no boundaries in genre and age. I asked him what his secret is? Daryl told me a story about when he performed in front of a young crowd at the Falls Festival, in Victoria, Australia. He was completely blown away when the crowd sang, word for word, the lyrics to the 1976, US Billboard Hot 100 chart hit, Sherbet’s song Howzat. Daryl told me he has tried to analyse the reason why his music has endured such longevity. He believes that it is the chemistry he gives and receives from the audience, that maybe the answer to my question.
Daryl Braithwaite is an Aussie battler, at one point he was working building footpaths to make ends meet. His spectacular career revival is what dreams are made of. Mr Braithwaite is a legend, he is still performing to enthusiastic audiences of all ages, as he approaches his seventh decade. Door’s opened at 2pm. History would be made, Bali’s First Ever International Show was about to begin. The line up was indeed phenomenal on a perfect day in Paradise. Engaging fans (mostly Australian) bopped along to Jason Singh and then 1927 as they sung their hit single “That’s when I think of you”. Animated lead vocalist Eric Weideman confessed it was his first time to Bali. He was in the groove, wearing a sarong out of respect for our unique culture. It felt like a typical Bali holiday vibe as the lawn area started to fill up. Patrons were relaxed and carefree. Dressed in beachwear, shorts and thongs. Bintang beer, wine and champagne flowing freely, the party had begun.
He did tell me that he was grateful, this is a word I am familiar with. Being grateful maybe the simple answer to the success of the TV Week King of Pop winner for three consecutive years in 1975, 1976 and 1977. Being on the The Island of the Gods with all it’s magic, I asked Daryl if he was spiritual. He told me that although he is not religious, he would consider himself spiritual to a certain extent. He explained to me that he tries to live his life the way his parents taught him. He quoted the Golden Rule my own Mother would also use, “Do to others what you would have them do to you” I left our interview feeling light, I felt rejuvenated and elated. The rest of the show did not disappoint. Shannon Noll was singing “Waltzing Matilda” as we walked back towards the lawn area. With Aussie pride, I marvelled at the magic of the evening. Shannon is also known as Nollsie, he is the ultimate showman. Nollsie invited a couple up to the stage, a marriage proposal transpired in front of the crowd.
Melbourne celebrity, ex Aussie rules footballer and now radio star Brendan Fevola also known as “Fev”, who was in Bali celebrating his buck’s party climbed the stage and sang “April Sun in Cuba” in a duo with Nollsie. The crowd was joyous, it was almost time for Daryl. Finally it was time for the Daryl and his band to perform. True to his gracious nature, he introduced the members of his band. I had pushed my way to the front of the stage, completely losing myself in time and place, I started carrying on like a teenager. I wasn’t alone. There was a remarkable energy radiating from Daryl and his band, the crowd was ecstatic singing, dancing and jumping to the classic songs. A drone was snapping photos from above, while Daryl belted out favourites, “One Summer” “Howzat”, “Not too late” and more. Fev was on someone’s shoulders, in the middle of the crowd shouting out “One more song” “One more song” after they left the stage, we were craving for more. I had paired up with a new Aussie friend, channeling my 13 year old self, in unison we screamed at the top of our lungs “I love you Daryl”, “I love you Daryl”. And then he was back. He sang “Hound Dog”, “Summer Love” and finally what we had all been waiting for,“Horses”. The crowd waving their arms in the air sang out loud, “That’s the way it’s gonna be, little darlin’ We’ll be riding on the horses, yeah Way up in the sky, little darlin’ And if you fall I’ll pick you up, pick you up It was then that the magic in Bali really happened, the fire works ignited the sky in a spectacular display above the stage. Daryl assured us he will be back next year… “That’s the way it’s gotta be, little darling”.

For many ladies the simple solution is cosmetic tattoo, which is becoming increasingly popular these days. Your eyebrows are the frames for your eyes. While some of you are lucky to have perfect eyebrows, many of us are not. Thinning eyebrows is often caused by over plucking, aging, nutrient deficiency or hypothyroidism. Your eyebrows could have bald patches or look skimpy. Instead of always having to pencil in the corrections, which does wear off or sweat off in this heat, wouldn’t it be great to not worry about looking your best all the time?
My name is Hilbrand Kuit MSc. a Dutchman living in Seminyak, Bali. I am a qualified and licensed Psychologist and Reiki Healer for expats living in Bali with:
First one eye will have numbing cream applied with a layer of plastic covering over it. This is your time to relax and definitely keep your eyes shut because the cream stings a little if you get any inside. Half an hour later the cream is removed and more cream is applied to the second eye. The eyeliner doesn’t take very long to do. While it may seem scary to have a buzzing tool working so close to your eye it’s relatively pain-free and quick. It’s more of a tingling sensation. The eyeliner will look much darker when it’s finished but the next day after washing your face it will be a bit lighter. Your eyes may feel a little tender for a day or possibly a bit swollen for a day. This passes quickly. For many clients will need to have a retouch of colour about a month later. This is usually no charge. The colour will eventually fade over time and need to be refreshed. This depends on how much time you spend in the sun. It could be a year or a few years.
There are two processes for the eyebrows: One is simple tattoo and the other is called micro-blading for those who have very few eyebrow hairs or bald patches. The tiny blade is very effective at giving a 3D effect as it scars and looks very real but it takes ages and is more painful. It gives a natural look like drawing on the fine lines to imitate the natural hairs.

Some women may like to have their lips coloured with pigment ink. I found having this done tinglier than the eyes and takes much longer. While the lips looked great afterwards the colour faded quite quickly.
Sound scary? For a professional artist with good equipment the procedure is easy with minimal discomfort. To start with the artist will scrutinize your eyebrows to determine a good shape, with several shapes to choose from. Then the artist will draw on the shape for your approval. This may take some time to get it right. Choosing the colour best for you is next. There are a variety of colours from light brown to black. There is a special pigment, which is thicker (designed for cosmetic tattooing) in the same shades of makeup or tattoo ink, which is longer lasting but only comes in basic colours. The next step is numbing cream will be applied to first one side and covered with plastic wrap to prevent drying out.
I love getting up in the morning and not having to put on any makeup thanks to Tato, who has been a professional tattoo artist for over twenty years working in Indonesia, England and Brunei. With so much competition in Bali and an over-abundance of tattoo shops virtually everywhere he decided to take up another venue of cosmetic tattoo.
Only one eyebrow first. It takes about 30 minutes for the numbing to take effect. After the cream is removed more cream will probably be applied to your other eyebrow. The numbing is effective for about thirty minutes so the artist needs to work quickly. Then the tattoo gun is turned on with a quiet buzzing sound and the drawing begins line by line. Because the eyebrows are directly over a bone there may be a little pain.
Tato is very calm and patient instilling confidence in his skill. He works methodically giving a professional look to your eyes and face. He usually is willing to come to your house and perform this delicate work that will make you look permanently beautiful.
All very bearable, we’re not talking about screaming pain. Depending on how thick you want your eyebrows the process may take up to half an hour or longer for micro blading. After this it’s repeated on the other side. The skin will likely feel a little tender for a few days and a thin scab will form which will last about a week. Your eyebrows will look darker for the first week until the scab falls off then you’ll have a natural frame for your eyes on your face. Don’t wash your face until the next day. You may need a touch-up a month later, which is complimentary. Eyeliner is popular with Asian women and older women who feel the need to emphasize their eyes. You can have the upper and lower lines applied. Your choice. There’s also a choice of colour from striking black to shades of brown or soft blue or green, whichever you prefer. You may prefer to have a thin line or a thicker one. With a tail at the end or not. Discuss all of this with your artist before they begin so they are clear on what your preferences are.

Welcome to the debut of Mala: Art and Culture! Mala beads, above, refer to Saraswati, Hindu goddess of the arts and knowledge. I’ll be doing my best to serve as a promoter of the region’s culture and arts.
1990’s. Touring with a group through some of the eastern islands of the archipelago, they were shocked to discover villagers selling heirloom textiles. Indonesia was in an economic crisis.
Here’s a word that’s been buzzing about Bali lately: heritage. We’ve got heritage trees, dogs, pigs, and even heritage rice and foodstuffs.
These remote villages were primarily barter societies, and textiles were the only cash commodity they had. Jean asked what was replacing these heirlooms and understood that the sellers had to focus on fast cash to keep their children in school, off island. So Threads of Life started with 12 women on that island and grew to what are now 50 communities on 10 islands with over 1200 weavers. Threads continues to seek ways to improve livelihood in these communities and many are now growing dye plants in for additional streams of income, which in turn encourages a sustainable source of dye materials. Occasionally, Threads hosts traditionally garbed artisan visitors, who engage appreciative crowds with music, songs and dance, and proudly display their work.
Heritage in this sense refers to preserved cultural traditions, to objects and qualities that are important to a nation or people, and to products that are emblematic of fine craftsmanship and time-honored use. It is also an apt label for an historical livestock breed or a native strain of a botanical. Packing for a stay in Ubud, I came across a favorite sash (sabuk), naturally dyed and woven in Seraya Timur, Karangasem. I realized I’d never particularly spread the word about the workshop there (kelompok Karya Sari Warna Alam), a true success in patronage of heritage craft. And because I was headed to the Ubud’s fourth annual Food Festival, I dismissed the heritage textile idea for this first column. Wouldn’t you know, at Ubud, heritage ingredients, recipes, and agriculture were on everyone’s lips (and happily on our tongues). Innovation Generation may have been the festival theme, but the hottest innovators were champions of all things heritage, from reviving their grandmother’s home remedies to seeking out farmers of obscure and endangered Balinese vegetables. There’s a definite connection between heritage and innovation. Culture being a living thing, based in a definite heritage, it’s fully subject to the whims of its heirs’. Artists and artisans can explore from the solid base of the culture’s knowledge and customs, but may not always know what’s catching on in the community. Mavens and scholars will give the necessary boost to cultural creativity, but its value can often depend upon economics and marketing. Red rice champion Helianti Hilman (Javana foods) spoke of how Javana has been inspiring young farmers by showing them the foreign demand for Indonesia’s heritage foods. Isn’t it amazing how often the creators and inheritors within a culture must be exposed to an appreciative fan base of outsiders? In a win-win move, Helianti brought young farmers from Flores, Papua, and West Java, curious to meet some of their ultimate customers and consumers. A holistic view of a culture in resurgence revealed itself: stars of food-centric apps, bamboo craftsmen, potters, and young chefs all spoke along the same lines: study and respect time-honored ingredients or component parts, interact and network widely, and be driven by a purpose of sustainability. Newly inspired, I contacted Jean Howe, the expatriate American whose efforts launched the weavers’ enterprise where I purchased the cloth. It suddenly seemed utterly essential that more people learn about this place. Jean’s championed some of this archipelago’s most endangered spinners, weavers and dye makers. A visit to her delightful Threads of Life gallery in Ubud can fast-track a person to Indonesian acculturation. There is so much to appreciate and enjoy in her and British husband William Ingram’s museum-like treasure trove. Their hands-on workshops sell out well in advance and their website is a resource by itself. Threads of Life came into being when Jean and William were cultural escorts for the phinisi ship Perentis in the

traditional processes by creating new textiles, inspired by tradition and heritage,” he told me. “Bluesville,” he says, “actually tries to create new textiles, but using traditional processes. Our vision is to make something new out of a tradition. Ultimately, we want our products to be the traditional textiles of the future.” This is done by drawing batik with the hand-held canting, and hand-dyeing their fabrics in natural dye from such pigments as tree barks, roots, dried fruits skin and natural indigo made from indigofera tinctoria leaves. The Bluesville clothing line usually mixes traditional fabrics with new (a sleeve or pocket may be heritage-inspired), but 10% of their line is sewn of 100% traditionally-made fabric. One popular mélange is his line of clothing using indigo dye on camoufl age-print fabric.
And the Karya Sari Warna Alam weavers, along the ring road around Bali’s east coast, where my prized sash was made? After the Bali bomb, USAID agreed to fund Threads to work with communities in Bali modeled on their earlier successes. The group started reviving textiles using natural dyes in Seraya, Nusa Penida and Sideman. All of these are now functioning independently of Threads of Life and have good sustainable business practices. It took about five years to get them there. These artisans are now primarily selling to their own market where there is a demand for traditional textiles for ritual use. This is precisely what was envisioned by Threads in the first place. Researching contemporary nuances in heritage textiles, I chanced onto the work of Direz Zender, a young menswear designer in Java who is making it hip to wear natural indigo and handdrawn batik, through his label B l u e s v i l l e . Bluesville began in 2011, championing natural dye, particularly indigo, and simple modern batik patterns targeted to younger customers. He credits top designers before him, like Biyan, for innovations using heritage fabrics, but Direz seems to have lit a fire with indigo. As demand grew, with more young designers taking his lead, so did the operational size and number of natural indigo purveyors.
Direz sees a recent resurgence of Indonesian traditional textiles and natural dyeing, especially by younger designers. He advises anyone serious about learning more, to go to the masters. Sumatera for songket, Java for batik, and Sumba for the double ikat. I’ll add that Bali Aga village Tengganan, near Candidasa, is a super place to discover double ikat and many other unique crafts. English is widely spoken there. So we go full circle on the innovation track. Direz told me that his inspiration draws from “nature and heritage, but simplified to our style; from urban hustle and lifestyle to the indigenous and nomads around the world.”
Direz says simply that he got his training by doing, and considers himself lucky to have been mentored by one of his business partner’s mothers, who was already expert in using natural dye. “We were encouraged to preserve

PROUD OF YOU! I can fly I’m proud that I can fly To give the best of mine Till the end of time. (Fiona Fung). It is Saturday, 21st April, 2018. The warm breeze blows gently across my face, as my fellow Rotarian husband and I enter the Hilton Bali Resort, to attend the Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua’s 25th Anniversary Charity Gala Dinner. It will be a very special night, I think, because we will all fl y! From the hotel foyer, I gaze outside at the manicured, landscaped gardens, consisting of tropical plants, sculptures and water features. A large billboard stands proudly behind me. It lists all of our sponsors, all equally important, but too numerous to mention here. The wonderful prizes they have donated to the club, are listed on a large poster, on the opposite side of the room. A gong sounds! The welcome dancers usher all of the guests, through the magnificent, carved doors fit for royalty, into the Graha Paruman Ballroom. The tables are already perfectly set for dinner and the black chairs, tied with massive silver sashes, sparkle silver and shimmer in the evening light. I take my place with two fellow Rotarians at the registration table and assist in registering approximately 170 guests, while other guests sip cocktails,

of it’s stunning, new Waterlily Crown Collection. The tall, elegant models including one handsome male model, parade their lovely white lace garments, weaving in and out of tables of guests. A lucky guest wins a garment, donated by Uluwatu Lace. Later in the evening as the guests become merrier and a little less composed, they dance away to All About Percussion Bali band.
provided by Bali Moon in the foyer. The full programme guided by our expert MC and Rotarian Eddie Fitzgerald, in his humourous and relaxed fashion, is about to begin. A traditional Balinese welcome dance (Gabor), performed by Sanggar Tari Dan Tabuh Langlang Bhuana IV Jimbaran, leads guests into the ballroom and commences the dance. Our President, Edward Naus steps onto the stage. He looks the part in a black suit and sparling silver bow tie and handkerchief. President Edward refl ects back on the past twenty-five years of RBCND achievements, through it’s various projects. He mentions several successful programmes: Cleft Lip and Palate, where RCBND has provided more than 1600 operations, to children and young adults in Bali and its surrounding islands; HIV/Aids Programme: Yayasan Puspadi Bali which focuses on providing prosthetic legs and prostheses to people with disabilities; Suryani Institute; Orphange Christmas Party, which together with the Grand Hyatt Bali, hosts a party for some 350 orphaned and disabled children; Bali Children Foundation Scholarships; Secondary School Scholarships; and Deaf School Bali Projects. RCBND also provides part funding to many other projects. The children’s choir takes the stage - YPAC (Yayasan Penderita Anak Cacat) and Puspadi Bali Foundation provide an excellent performance. Afterwards Nia Firmita who is 11 years old, dances to perfection, despite her disability. I met Nia at the Orphanage Christmas Party last year. She looked as beautiful in her traditional dance costume, as she does now. Raffl es and auctions of the wonderful gifts and prizes donated by our sponsors, continue throughout the evening, to raise funds for RCBND’s continuing charity work. Later, prizes are given out for “Best Dressed Couple” and “Best Dressed Lady.” The guests enjoy a buffet dinner to the sound of a live band: Balination. Uluwatu Lace provides the first glimpse
I sit back and listen to the music and the chatter of the guests, enjoying themselves. I think about how organisations like Rotary create change, more than the efforts of only one individual. Minke, the main character in one of renowned Indonesian author Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s novels, cleverly advised: …throw yourself into the organisational work. Make yourself and your friends a part of a great mountainous wave. (Pramoedya Ananta Toer – House of Glass). Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua endeavours to unite and modestly carry out such organisational work, for the benefit of others who need it. However, it cannot do it alone. So a great big thank you, to all of our sponsors, for their donations and wonderful prizes. Together, we can spread our wings, so wide! Thank you also, to all those who contributed to make this event, such a special one: our fellow Rotarians; the Fundraising Committee members; a variety of organisations; hotel staff from the Hilton Bali Resort; the choirs; bands and other performances. Please feel free to join one of RCBND’s Thursday (1-2 p.m.) weekly lunch meetings. 31 VOLATILITY – FRIEND OR FOE? If you follow the financial markets closely you will be more than aware that they have been subject this year to considerable volatility. Exactly what does that mean? A dictionary definition of volatility as it applies in finance is: ‘The degree of variation of a trading price series over time as measured by the standard deviation of logarithmic returns’. I am sure you wanted to know that! In simpler terms it means the erratic movement up or down of a market index in a relatively short space of time. Where the largest of all markets, the US market is concerned, 2017 was a relatively calm year that produced some very positive returns. 2018 started out the same way but since early February we have seen wild swings in both directions. What has given rise to the volatility?
even if the overall performance of the funds is identical over the whole period. This is because with a volatile fund you are buying more units or shares when prices are low and fewer when they are high. This is known as cost averaging. I have known occasions when someone has started a savings plan only to complain after say 12 months that the markets are down by 10% or more and that they chose a terrible time to start the plan. They are surprised when I tell them how fortunate they are as they are now getting a discount on the original unit prices and will reap the benefits later on. - Which they will of course if they don’t panic and abandon ship. Sometimes it’s a hard message to get across as people expect to see gains from day one. Which is better - regular savings or a lump sum investment?

Analysts are quick to come up with answers such as concern that interest rates will rise, the potential for trade wars, fear (at one stage) of serious escalation of hostilities with North Korea as well as Syria and even the impact on the US presidency of the alleged ‘hushing up’ of the Stormy Daniels issue. Less understandable are the rapid recoveries that follow the falls. Maybe it’s a combination of relief the day after a crisis that things are not so bad after all or it could be simply shrewd investors taking advantage of dips in the markets. Or maybe realisation that despite all the ‘noise’, people are still buying hamburgers and cars, still visiting Bali and other destinations and still spending money. When people spend money companies make profits, their share values go up and shareholders receive dividends.
The situation is not the same however for someone who invested a lump sum and is seeing a 10% loss after one year. That person has to wait until the markets replenish the loss in order to get back to the starting point. So if you have a lump sum to invest, would it not be wiser to hold it in cash and invest it gradually over 10, 15 or 20 years? Not really, because you are then betting against the likelihood that markets will continue to rise over the long term. Cash, while a very necessary holding for the short term, is effectively dead money over the longer term. To reduce the impact of any nasty early surprises a common investing technique is to invest in stages into the markets over perhaps one to two years. The cash can be held within a portfolio or platform where switching can be done quickly via a fax or e-mail.
So who gets hurt by volatility? It could be ‘day traders’ who get their bets wrong as to the direction of the markets. But day traders are effectively speculators who are not interested in fundamentals or the true value of the stocks they are trading. They are seeking quick profits but can also end up with big losses. Or it could be someone who made a large investment the day before a big fall and who might have to wait a while to get back to the starting point. That is, if he or she doesn’t panic and cash everything in at a huge loss. But losers will also be those ordinary investors who are spooked by negative headlines and decide to cash in their savings to prevent further losses, only to return to the fold again when prices have reached new highs. In other words those who buy high and sell low. Other losers are those who embark on a long term savings plan but become discouraged after a couple of years of losses and decide to bale out, incurring not only losses but also heavy penalty charges for breaking their contract.

There are plenty of other ways to reduce the impact of volatility. Here are a few of them: • ‘Long-short’ hedge funds where part of a fund can make money when certain shares or assets fall. • A well-diversified portfolio which invests in a range of uncorrelated asset classes. For example, gold will often rise sharply when stocks or the US Dollar fall steeply. • Equity income funds. These focus on companies that pay good and regular dividends. The income helps to offset any fall in the share price. • Artificial Intelligence. There are now funds using AI that can make quick decisions that are not impacted by human emotions. Work in progress though; the recent fatal accident involving a driverless car in the US springs to mind! So is volatility a friend or foe? C/BT/G-31 Jan. 18
Human nature and emotion can be the investor’s worst enemy in the world of investing, where greed and fear can lead to poor decisions. Can anyone actually benefit from volatility? Indeed, anyone can. The same people who might abandon savings plans can actually be winners by hanging in and continuing to maintain their contributions during bad times or periods of volatility. By staying the course they are profiting from lower prices and will reap the benefits later on when markets recover. The only proviso of course is that you must hold on until the prices have risen again, even if it means holding on until after a plan matures. Alternatively, there is always a facility to move into a lower risk fund or cash at an appropriate time short of maturity. Using this technique the gains can be locked in. Where savings plans are concerned volatile funds, such as those invested in emerging markets or commodities, can prove much more profitable than run-of-the-mill defensive funds,
As you have probably gathered, it can be either but with good financial planning and using some of the described techniques it can be your friend. Then you won’t lose any sleep should you see the stock market index fall by 400 points just before you go to bed!

12,000 attended Ubud Food Festival 2018, fortifying its position as Southeast Asia’s leading culinary event From the Opening Night Party to the final mouthful, the Ubud Food Festival 2018 Presented by ABC (UFF) was enjoyed by more than 12,000 hungry foodies from 13-15 April – a 30% increase on last year’s attendance. In its fourth year, the record numbers attending the 100+ events fortifies its position as Southeast Asia’s leading culinary celebration, with the spotlight on Indonesian food and its food industry members shining brighter than ever. “This year’s theme ‘Generasi Inovasi’ was brought to life in astonishing ways across the Festival’s three days,” commented Founder & Director Janet DeNeefe. “From the rockstar antics of Jakartan molecular gastronomy chef Andrian Ishak dousing the crowd in liquid nitrogen (he provided ponchos of course!), to rising star Putri Mumpuni’s sumptuous re-imagination of a Central Javanese classic, the exciting future of Indonesia’s culinary industry was everywhere at UFF18.” For the first time the UFF was supported by a Presenting Partner, one of Indonesia’s leading food brands, ABC. Dhiren Amin, Head of Marketing Southeast Asia for Kraft Heinz ABC, commented, “Ubud Food Festival 2018 Presented by ABC celebrated the diversity of Indonesian food. As a home-grown Indonesian food brand, ABC shares the mission to introduce Indonesian cuisine to a global audience. This common vision between UFF and ABC was our main motive in becoming a Presenting Partner for UFF 2018.” At the Festival Hub and across Ubud’s most coveted venues, over 100 chefs, farmers, scientists, entrepreneurs, social enterprise founders and outstanding innovators from across the archipelago and the Asia Pacific plated up hundreds of different dishes, and delved deep into the region’s – and the world’s – food landscape. The Kitchen Stage at iconic Ubud restaurant Indus hosted 18 cooking demos – including three culinary competitions – from international chefs and Indonesia’s best. After his demo, Michelin-starred Korean chef Jun Lee commented, “While food itself can be perishable, if the experience of having a good meal is merged with a special story, it sticks to your memory for a long time.”

Held across Ubud’s top dining destinations, the Festival’s 17 special events saw local and international chefs sharing kitchens to celebrate local produce and culinary heritage with innovative fine dining flair. One of the Festival’s hottest tickets was Locavore ft. Rydo Anton, a collaboration between Ubud’s hometown heroes Locavore and the Indonesian-born Head Chef of Bangkok’s Gaggan, voted Asia’s Best Restaurant for the past four years. Chef Rydo is already planning to collaborate with Locavore again, a testament to the UFF’s mission of fostering professional networks throughout the region. Little-known cuisines and foraged ingredients of Indonesia’s eastern regions were spotlighted at Casa Luna in a long table lunch prepared by young food activist from West Timor, Dicky Senda, the Jungle Chef from Papua, Charles Toto, and Janet DeNeefe. The Festival’s Masterclasses gave audiences the chance to hone their culinary skills alongside the industry’s best. One of the most popular was the creative tempeh workshop with young ‘foodpreneur’ Benny Santoso, whose dream is to promote the Indonesian soy superfood internationally. “I want to make tempeh as globally recognized as sushi,” explained Santoso. “At the Ubud Food Festival I got a lot of media attention, and many foreigners were curious about my product, which is what I need to share my tempeh with a wider audience. I believe with dedication, passion and hard work, I can achieve something great for Indonesia. I want to thank the UFF for helping me with my dream of distributing nationally and overseas.” Spotlighting Indonesian food heroes both emerging and established, in its second year the free Teater Kuliner stage again proved popular, with capacity crowds for each of its 18 sessions. From Bali’s most important ceremonial dish, lawar, whipped up by local culinary legend Pak Darta, to West Timor’s favorite smoked pork, baby se’i, prepared by Senda, Teater Kuliner’s delicious diversity proves why gourmands across the globe should be paying attention to Indonesian food. “I look forward to welcoming you all to my home village of Mollo in the highlands of Timor,” commented Senda, “so you can get to know our unique culinary culture.” With panels ranging from Indonesia’s rice crisis to the experience of female chefs in a male-dominated industry,

there were plenty of powerful messages for audiences at the Food for Thought stage. During the Female Frontier panel, Chef Kim Pangestu spoke of the need for more female role models across all areas of the food industry. “As a chef, you can also be a teacher, a writer, a TV show host. Being a chef doesn’t mean you’re confined to the kitchen. We need to see more women in these roles,” she commented. With four panels dedicated to ‘the people who feed us’, from Sumatran coffee farmers to Bali’s rice farmers, one of the strongest messages was that consumers need to engage directly with farmers to safeguard sustainability, and give farmers a better deal. Thor Yumna from TaniHub, a smartphone app connecting farmers with buyers, explained that “the three biggest challenges for farmers is access to the market, to finance, and to knowledge.” The Food for Thought series gives innovative companies such as TaniHub a platform to reach audiences hungry for insights into how to be more conscious consumers. “It gave me great joy to see the success of UFF this year, from the support and cooperation from so many different members of the community, to the huge array of delicious and inspiring events, to the enthusiasm of food lovers,” commented DeNeefe. “We feel our efforts in making Indonesia’s culinary scene go global are finally being recognized, and this energizes us to deliver an even better festival in 2019. I want to express my deepest gratitude to all sponsors, partners, volunteers, media, chefs and speakers, and of course our audiences, for sharing our love of Indonesian culinary heritage and the exciting future of Indonesia’s food industry. We’ll see you all next year!” The fifth Ubud Food Festival will take place in April 2019. For all the updates stay tuned to the website ubudfoodfestival. com, and social media @ubudfoodfest. Tragic Ocean Deaths
Australian female surfer drowns off Suluban Beach An Australian woman, Joy Haiden, has drowned off Suluban Beach, South Kuta, on the late afternoon of Monday, April 23, 2018, while surfing. Beritabali.com quotes eyewitnesses who say the woman was staying at Nyoman Home Stay in North Kuta from where she departed for a full day of surfing at 6:00 am in the large waves conditions. Local lifeguards received a report at 6:30 pm that a tourist had drowned on Suluban Beach. The woman’s body was brought to the Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar for forensic examination. [www.balidiscovery.com April 29,2019] Austrian diver killed, hit by boat at Bali’s Nusa Lembongan An Austrian diver was killed off of Bali’s Nusa Lembongan island after she was hit by a boat on Monday afternoon. Klungkung Police spokesman Nyoman Sarjana confirmed the incident on Tuesday, telling local reporters that it happened near Jungutbatu Village at the mangrove forest, around 1:45pm. Nusa Lembongan is a small island off of Bali’s east coast, popular with divers and snorkelers. The victim, identified by Tribun Bali as 35-year-old Kerstin Korinek had been on a dive with the boat Serendipity, including the boat’s captain, I Made Sunada, a boat crew, I Gede Atmika Yasa, two other foreigners, and two guides. Just minutes into the dive, crew saw Korinek had deployed a ‘safety sausage’, an infl atable diver’s tool used to indicate that she was coming up the surface, so the Serendipity approached to pick her up, says Sarjana. But suddenly a boat from Lembongan Dive Adventure allegedly came from the west, directly hitting Korinek. “Seeing that, a fellow (diver) called Zinggl shouted and crew saw the water was a reddish color, mixed with blood,” Sarjana said, as quoted by Tribun Bali. Crew evacuated an unconscious Korinek, who had an open head wound, to the Serendipity and rushed her to mainland Bali. “The victim was immediately sent to Surya Husadha Hospital Bali in Denpasar to get medical treatment, but at about 6:35pm, the victim was declared dead by the hospital,” Sarjana said. Nusa Penida Police is doing an investigation into the woman’s death and a crime reconstruction. The captain of the Lembongan Dive Adventure boat, I Kade Ricahyana has been secured by Nusa Penida Police for questioning, while police are interviewing witnesses. The captain has not yet been charged with any crime, but police are considering whether he could be charged with violating
359 of the Criminal Code which covers negligence causing death, says Sarjana. Water Police and the district attorney’s office are also investigating the incident. [Coconuts Bali April 24, 2018] A second Australian has died while surfing in Indonesia Along with the tragic death of Australian musician, Jae Haydon, near Bali’s Uluwatu this week, another Australian surfer has drowned off the shores of the Indonesian island. Fifty-five-year-old Anthony Lines’ body was found at Playgounds Wave on Nusa Lembongan a small island off the southern coast of Bali just to the north of Nusa Penida. There’s a lodge in the area known as Playgrounds Wave Lodge but it was not immediately known if Lines was staying there. His friend, fellow Australian Jason Henderson, apparently found Lines fl oating about an hour and a half after they went out. Lines was rushed to a nearby medical center but was pronounced dead on arrival. Authorities were informed by medical examiners that Lines–who reportedly hails from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast–had minor injuries “including bruising and blisters on his face and there were specific signs of drowning.” Other than that details are still sketchy as to the cause of his death. Lines perished within the same 24-hour time period as Haydon, who, according to reports, went missing around 7:30 a.m. at Uluwatu. After falling on a wave, his broken board washed ashore with no sign of Haydon. Images of the board were shared on social media to try and find out whose it was. Haydon was located about 12 hours after his disappearance. [The Inertia April 26, 2018] Spanish tourist drowns at Nusa Penida after saving wife and two sons from strong currents A 53-year-old Spanish national, Francisco Miguel Garcia Perez, drowned on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Secret Beach at Nusa Lembongan as he swam to save his wife and two children who were being swept away by strong currents. According to NusaBali, the tragic incident occurred shortly after noon. Perez and his family were guests at the Lembongan Cliff Villas at Nusa Penida. Intent on enjoying the beach and surrounding oceans, the family rented two motorcycles to leave for Secret Beach, arriving at their destination at around 11:00 am. At around 11:30 am, Perez’s wife and two sons were suddenly swept out to sea by a strong current. Perez swam to their assistance managing to pull his family to safety on a passing fishing boat, but, tragically, became exhausted in the process and was himself carried out to sea where he subsequently drowned. The fishing boat also managed to retrieve Perez and brought him to shore where he was pronounced dead at a local community medical center. The Spaniard’s body was taken to the Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar for forensic examination. [www.balidiscovery.com April 29,2019]
Perth man Alistair Larmour in custody after ‘abducting’ son in Bali A 15-month-old boy is being reunited with his mother in Bali after allegedly being abducted by his father, a self-described former Perth spiritual healer. Andrew Larmour was today found safe and well after his mother Agnieszka (Agnes) Krzysztofowicz had claimed her ex-partner Alistair Larmour had taken him during a late-night home invasion. It’s understood Andrew will be reunited with his mother at a police station today. Ms Krzysztofowicz and Mr Larmour live in Bali and are embroiled in a custody battle after becoming estranged last June. Ms Krzysztofowicz hired child recovery specialist Col Chapman and told The West Australian on Thursday that she feared for her son’s safety. “The hours since (Andrew was taken) have been the worst of my life,” she said. “He is a small baby who must be terrified by the whole situation. Every minute counts to get Andrew back home.” Yesterday, Mr Larmour posted a video to Facebook defending his actions as the “only option” and claiming he “just wanted to be a dad”. “I just wanted to make the point that Andrew is happy and healthy and that he’s fine, I’m fine,” he said. “I haven’t seen Andrew in 10 months and I’ve been trying to come to an agreement for visitation rights. “This is what it took to get Agnes to actually talk to me. “I felt really cornered and that this was actually the only option left to me.” Mr Larmour said he and Ms Krzysztofowicz were now at the negotiation table. Ms Krzysztofowicz alleges Mr Larmour stormed into her home near Ubud on Sunday night with a second man, who took her son from his bed. She said the men then fl ed in a nearby car. Ms Krzysztofowicz said she had not seen Mr Larmour since June and said their son was unfamiliar with his father. She said her son had a fever and chicken pox on the night he disappeared. Ms Krzysztofowicz and Andrew are Polish citizens. On his website, Mr Larmour describes himself as a mystic, spiritual healer and medical intuitive. He talks about his previous battles with schizophrenia, drugs and alcoholism. He grew up in Melbourne but moved to WA, where according to his website he spent two years as secretary on the WA board of Alcoholics Anonymous. [The West Australian April 20, 2018] Australia boy, 12, runs away to Bali using family credit card The boy, who ran away from his Sydney home after a row with his mother, had previously visited Bali on holiday with his family. Australian police were investigating on Tuesday how a 12-yearold boy managed to fl y alone to the Indonesian island of Bali and spend four days at a resort using his parents’ credit card. The boy ran away from his Sydney home after a row with his mother, fl ying first to the Western Australian city of Perth on budget airline Jetstar and then on to Bali, according to commercial broadcaster Channel Nine. “He just doesn’t like the word ‘no’, and that’s what I got, a kid in Indonesia,” his mother, Emma, told Channel Nine in a programme that aired late Monday. “It’s too easy, it’s way too easy. There’s a problem in our system,” she said, calling for tighter controls on air travel by young people. The family had previously visited Bali on holiday and Emma said her son had already tried to book fl ights there on his own but had been knocked back by airlines because he did not have a letter from her. “We screamed, we begged for help (from Australian authorities) for weeks on end,” Emma added. “When the first attempt to Indonesia took place, we were told his passport was going to be fl agged.” The boy, who “wanted to go on an adventure”, said he was told by airline staff this time that he did not need permission from his parents to board the fl ights. He spent four days in Bali, where he said he checked into a hotel, hired a scooter and drank beer before a friend alerted his mother to a geotagged video of himself playing in a swimming pool. The holiday cost his parents Aus$8,000, according to Channel Nine. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said they were first notified that the boy might try to leave the country on March 8, before being told he might be in Bali on March 17. The boy was found by Indonesian police the following day. His parents then fl ew to Bali to take him home. The federal police said an alert to prevent international travel had not been placed on the boy, and it did not have the power to cancel or request the cancellation of a passport if there were no suspicions of crimes committed. “The AFP will work with partner agencies to review the circumstances of this matter and current operating procedures, to ensure this type of incident does not occur again,” an AFP spokesperson said in a statement. Three foreigners arrested on Jl. Dewi Sri suspected for multiple instances of theft in Kuta A group of three Algerians believed to have engaged in pickpocketing on multiple instances in Kuta were arrested Monday on Jl. Dewi Sri, Legian. The arrest was triggered after local woman Ni Komang Sintariani, 30, reported to Kuta Police her phone was stolen from her bag at a bakso food stall on Jl. By Pass Ngurah Rai, Kuta on Saturday evening. Based on the report, police went to the warung to collect statements from witnesses and look through CCTV footage-which is what they say led them to discover three foreigners had been involved. Police tracked them down to Jl. Dewi Sri and then coordinated with security at restaurants in the area, especially those crowded with tourists to look out for the three. “Security from Pepe coordinating (with police) shared that there was also a case of a missing bag. Their actions were also recorded on CCTV,” Bali Post quoted an unidentified source as saying. Warung Pepe is a popular Italian restaurant on Jl. Dewi Sri. Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Chief Ario Seno Wibisono confirmed the arrest of the three foreign nationals but says police are still investigating. [Coconuts Bali April 26, 2018] ATM robbery of Rp. 1.8 Billion in South Bali NusaBali reports that 3 armed-guards working delivering cash to ATMs in Bali were overpowered with a toxic liquid in the parking area of Bank Central Asia in Mumbul, Nusa Dua on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. The semi-armored delivery truck operated by PT Andalan was in the process of delivering Rp. 1.8 billion to be placed in an ATM machine at the BCA Bank. The robbery occurred at 10:30 pm when a vehicle pulled up behind the truck carrying cash and the assailants sprayed an undetermined toxic liquid on PT Andalan employees I Gede Mahardika (50), Komang Antoni (27) and Mikael Bagu Koro (24) a security guard. Immobilized by the toxic substance for an estimated 10 minutes, the group of robbers made off with Rp. 1.8 billion held in five bags. The modified Luxio van with a large safe installed inside had been making rounds delivering money to ATMS in Denpasar before proceeding to Mumbul where they were assaulted and robbed. Analyzing CCTV footage, police believe the robbers numbered more than three and used two vehicles in the robbery, an Innova and an Avanza. Police believe the robbers followed the van from Denpasar. Police officials have criticized PT . Andalan for doing cash replenishment at night without first coordinating with the police beforehand. [www.balidiscovery. com April 29, 2019]
