Tea Time It is a truth universally acknowledged that one is either a coffee drinker or a tea drinker. Hopefully, one is knowledgeable about their chosen brew. Social media is a great way to learn informally and for those of us who fall into the tea-lover category, there are tea blogs. (Next time, I will take pity on the other half and talk about the best coffee blogs.) Tea blogs are written by people who are passionate about food and drink who want an outlet to write about the drink they love or who want to connect to other tea-lovers. Sometimes, the bloggers work in the food industry as chefs, food writers, consultants or critics, and sometimes they are just passionate about eating and drinking. Here is a list of six popular tea blogs to start reading: Thirsty for Tea: This blog (www.thirstyfortea.com) is a visually stunning ode to tea, teapots, brewing techniques for specific teas and tearooms across the USA, with recipes to match. The blog is maintained by Bonnie Eng, an Asian-American tea lover with a background in Health Education who studied culinary arts at the New School of Cooking. Eng states on her blog: “I started Thirsty for Tea as a way for me to connect with others who love tea as much as I do, and to broaden the idea of what tea time means.” With her training as a cook, Eng skillfully pairs food with tea, and often features tea-matching recipes, such as cakes, breads or macaroons, as well as recipes that use tea, such as Bangers and Mash with Irish Tea Gravy. She features lesser-known personal favorites, such as green matcha (powdered green tea) or Mochi (sticky, sweet rice desserts). Some of Eng’s more exotic recipes include Matcha Green Tea Croissants and Mochi Banana Bread. From reading Eng’s blog, I learned about Korean Barley tea, which I’d never heard of before. Eng describes this tea as being ‘nutty and slightly sweet with warm, toasty undertones … kind of like drinking beer without the alcohol and carbonation.’ Kathy YL Chan: This blog (https://www.kathyylchan.com) is a secret glimpse inside the world of a professional tea consultant, complete with glossy photos of luxurious high teas in fivestar hotels around the world. The subtitle of the blog is ‘Tea, Desserts and Hotels.’ Chan works as a consultant to leading hotels on tea concepts and product development. She also writes about tea for inflight, hotel and industry publications. While her blog posts aren’t long and mostly feature photos, they transform high tea into an art form. Tea for Me Please: Blogger Nicole Martin (http://www.teaformeplease.com) describes her self as a ‘professional tea nerd and writer.” She states on her blog that her purpose in writing a blog is to ‘make tea fun and accessible for my readers while helping to promote small tea businesses and share their stories.’ This blog is more focused on learning about tea varieties, how to brew them, the best tea ware to use, health benefits of drinking tea, as well as a great section on tea and
social media, that incudes links to tea sites on different social media channels. Martin’s articles are focused on education and raising reader awareness and isn’t as laid-back and chatty as other tea blogs. However, if you want to learn what distinguishes one tea from another, this blog is a good place to start. World of Tea: This blog (https://worldoftea.org) written by Tony Gebely, is largely educational and explores the history, cultivation and brewing of various types of tea. Gebely has also written a book called Tea: A User’s Guide. His bio states that he has travelled extensively across Asia and has been studying tea for over ten years. Gebely’s blog won best tea blog in the World Tea Awards in 2014 and 2015. Again, a great blog for learning about different teas and how to brew and appreciate them. C/CI/I-10 May 17
Teaxplorer: This blog (https://teaxplorer.com) was written by Drew Bednasek who passed away two years ago, so the site is now archived but no longer updated. Drew was passionate about travelling and exploring the different tea cultures wherever he travelled, which is reflected in his posts. Drew worked for Postcard Teas Ltd in London. In addition to posting reviews of individual teas and blends, he wrote interesting articles on topics such as tea and social justice -- about the wages paid to tea pickers and farmers -- and the eternal debate between brewing loose versus bagged tea. Drew’s blogs are wonderful, personal testimonies to both his love of travel and his love of tea. You can learn a lot about the different cultures he travelled to by their tea consumption and social drinking habits. Chai Wallahs of India: This blog (http://chaiwallahsofindia.com) is written by two Indian-based journalists, Resham Gallatly and Zach Marks, who are both obsessed with chai tea, which has been called the national drink of India. In Hindi, these chai tea sellers are known as ‘chai wallahs.’ The blog’s authors interview chai wallahs across India and tell their stories on their blog because in ‘the same way New York cab drivers might be able to tell the story of the city through their interactions with customers, chai wallahs can tell the story of India in all its complexity.’ If you love chai or love India, or want to learn about either, you will want to read this blog. The writers are currently taking a break from writing this blog, but all past stories are archived and available to read. From learning about tea, and how to brew and appreciate different varieties, to learning about tea as a cultural experience, to simply travelling along with the authors as they roam around the globe, tea blogs have something for everyone. Except coffee drinkers.

Update Cafe des Artistes in Jln. Bisma, Ubud, continues to highlight its Belgian heritage. An amazing place, on a dead-ended side road in Ubud but always busy, reservations needed for early evening dining as a norm. Their specialty seems to be Steaks, grilled and served with a variety of sauces; Café de Paris [pictured], Archiduc [mushroom], Poivre Cream [black pepper], Estragon, Provencale or my favourite, with Blue Cheese. The very Belgian Black Mussels also attract many who appreciate them. They also offer a monthly 3 course special. Currently [and for Mothers’ Day] that is; a starter of Baked Goat Cheese wrapped in bacon with a raspberry vinaigrette followed by a typical Flemish [North Belgium] dish of Vol au Vent, cubed breast of chicken with beef meat balls and mushrooms in a puff pastry basket, lemon butter and potato croquettes. Dessert is Moelleux au Chocolat, a chocolate sponge filled with liquid chocolate with vanilla ice cream and a strawberry coulis. Cost for 3 courses is a very reasonable Rp. 250,000++. The great value for money at Café des Artistes is one of the reasons it is always so busy. Andrian Ishak owner/chef at Jakarta’s Namaaz Dining is the 2nd chef in the guest chef program at Cascades @ The Viceroy, Ubud, for 2017. It will be a lunch with a difference, as it features molecular gastronomy as applied to Indonesian cuisine. The lunch will also be held on Mothers’ Day, Sunday May 14. It starts with canapés at 12.30, followed by a 6 course lunch served from 1.00. Cost is Rp.1,200,000++ and prior reservation is essential.

All for Rp. 120,000, prior reservation is recommended. Joannes Riviere is the French chef and owner of Cuisine Wat Damnak – recently named Cambodia’s Best Restaurant at number 50 on last year’s Asia 50 Best Restaurants list in its 1st year of operation. He is known as the master of Cambodian cuisine, sometimes 100% traditional, sometimes with a little twist. It will be a 5 course dinner comprising the following Cambodian specials. Grilled fish in wild betel leaves with rice paddy herb, ripe and pickled green papaya salad, toasted coconut. Wild Cambodian cinnamon light ganache, puffed rice and caramelized cashew nuts. The cost is Rp.660,000++ and there is a special Naked Range wine pairing package available for an extra Rp. 250,000++.

Jamaican Jerk JamBali is Bali’s first traditional J a m a i c a n restaurant. It is a small intimate place up on the ridge above Ubud at Penestanan, the management is Jamaican and the fare is 100% traditional. Downstairs is airconditioned, upstairs the very popular alternative for evening dining on the covered roof top. Jerk is a cooking method common to the Caribbean, each island having its own special recipe. Jerk is a mix of spices that are either dry rubbed into the surface of the meat or fish or used as a wet marinade. Jamaican Jerk most commonly includes allspice (called “pimento” in Jamaica) and Scotch bonnet peppers. Other ingredients may include cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg. gartlic, ginger and salt. At JamBali the exact ingredients used, as with most of the recipes, are family secrets, as it is common to add their own special ingredients to the basic ones. Jamaican Jerk is usually done with chicken or pork. For special festive occasions goat is used and seafood is also sometimes prepared that way. The meat, so prepared, is then cooked over a flame. My first dish at JamBali was a pleasant surprise. Fish Cakes are available on so many different menus and different cuisines in Bali that my expectations were not high. What arrived were three paper-thin very crisp ‘Salt Fish Fritters’. With a dollop of the tangy well-spiced pineapple ginger relish that accompanied the dish spread on top, they were excellent, and whetted my appetite for what was to follow. Crab Cakes are served with a cucumber pickle. All the pickles and sauces are made in-house. The Chicken Wings get the jerk treatment prior to cooking and if that is not spicy enough for you then dare try the Hot & Spicy Bolt Wings!
QUICK REVIEW Callaloo Fritters are water spinach prepared the Jamaican way, served with a sweet and tangy sauce. There is a Fruit & Vegetable Salad, and a Green Salad that is served as a side dish to every main course, refreshingly good with its lime vinaigrette. Mains centre around jerk dishes. Chicken is at the top of the list and as is the norm it has been dry rubbed then cooked on the bone. The meat retains quite a firm texture, yet it is still tender, with a powerful after taste [you can request how strong or weak you want this to be].

Overall
: A cuisine with unique tastes, great value!
Escovitch is the Jamaican version of the South American Ceviche. The fish has been seasoned, browned, and marinated in a spicy vinegar marinade. JamBali uses Red Snapper and it is deep fried till crisp, served with a pickled onion and pepper sauce. Whole Red Snapper can also be ordered steamed, this is done in a vegetable broth. For the vegetarians there are also many choices here. The Coconut Curry Stew is labeled ‘Ital’, something akin to Vegan. Also a Jamaican Red Bean Stew or Pineapple Tofu in which the tofu has been battered and fried, served in a pineapple sauce. Then there is the Veggie Burger, a vegetable patty with lettuce, tomato and pickles, served in a hamburger bun, with sweet potato chips. Desserts are traditional too. There is a Rum & Raisin Bread Pudding and the very special Sweet Potato Pudding [another secret family recipe]. If you are seeking something to contrast with the spiced after taste of the food then ask for their special Sorrel Ice [spiced rosella with crushed ice], not on the menu but it is always available. JamBali serves very interesting food in a congenial setting. If you are into exploring tastes then this is the place for you? It is totally different, and so enjoyable.

Mothers! …Move Away From the Kitchen!! Scrawled crayon messages of love bearing hearts and stick figures, clumsily wrapped coffee mugs and something that may have once resembled eggs on toast with a cold cup of tea……. As far as Mothers Day presents go, I’ve received all of these and more from my children and honestly, I’ve cherished every singe one, no matter how inedible! For many countries around the world, the second Sunday in May is a day we dedicate to Mums. It’s important to remember that maternal figures in our lives might not only be our biological mothers, but also step mums, foster mums, adoptive mums, grandmas, aunts, big sisters, teachers, or even friends who have become role models. Whatever the form of your special Ibu, Sunday May 14th is the day to show her just how much she means to you. Renowned
for
their
Sunday
evening
dinners,
The
Smokehouse at Bistro C is carving up some succulent serves of their famous roasts for lunch as well as dinner this Mothers Day and there’s even a free glass of bubbles in it for mum too! Starting from 11am, make Sunday May 14th a ‘dishes free’ affair and pop on down to Canggu Club for a family day out. Not just a chance to get away from the kitchen, they’re all over entertainment options for the kids as well. Grown ups can recline, relax and ‘rehydrate’ while the young ones wear out their energy with a free jumping castle and slip n slide or enjoy crafts including making a card for Mum or a traditional Balinese offering. For those planning to enjoy dinner there will be a starlight movie on the big screen once everyone has enjoyed the sunset. Do her a REAL favour and book the little ones into Cubby House Kids Club across the road and treat Mum to an hour or three, free from the constant call of “Muuuuuuuummmm!!”
The Future of Bali’s Water is in our Hands Could it be the epitome of irony that in February this year when torrential rains resulted in floods across many areas on the island, thousands of homes in Bali’s capital city found themselves without water for a number of days?? Ironic perhaps, but certainly indicative of the reality that our island remains in the midst of a critical water supply crisis - a chronic issue which requires each and every one of us to educate and take action, ensuring Bali and her children will have a future. Continued growth and development has impacted on Bali’s supply of fresh water and reliance on annual wet season rains alone are simply no longer enough to replenish water tables and storage areas. With a continued increase in tourism; the economic backbone of the island, the number of wells has increased to meet the demand for water and ground water is being extracted at a rate too fast to be replenished. Bores are drilling deeper to access ground water and the problem of salt water intrusion is becoming an ever increasing issue as the water table drops below sea level. IDEP, is a local Indonesian NGO established in 1999 to develop and deliver training and community programs and media related to sustainable development through Permaculture, and Community-based Disaster Management. In an effort to raise awareness and take action in the face of this ecological crisis, IDEP are calling on all of us who depend on and benefit from Bali’s water to take steps toward saving and protecting this vital resource by being a part of the Bali Water Protection Program.
There will be live music to entertain from midday so why not come for lunch, stay until late and make the most of May’s cooler dry season evenings. Bookings are advisable and you can reserve a table for your Mothers Day Sunday Roast experience by emailing: bistroc@cangguclub.com or by telephone: +62 361 8483939 Looking to earn even more brownie points? Book Mum in for a pamper session at Body Temple Spa. It’s just downstairs from Canggu Club reception so there’s no reason to travel far. Their May specials are just the ticket to get her glammed up and feeling gorgeous. Take this opportunity to show mum how much she matters and give her a day she deserves. Perhaps this year it might be wise to pass on trying to impress her with your own questionable culinary skills in the kitchen (chances are she’ll have to clean up an epic mess afterwards anyways hey kids???) and spoil her island style by booking a table at Canggu Club’s Bistro C. Love you Mum! Located at Canggu Club, Canggu BISTROCBALI.COM BODYTEMPLEBALI.COM
which will serve to harness rainwater and direct it into the aquifers, continuing to rapidly replenish the water tables for years to come. It’s a relatively simple solution and at a fraction of the cost and environmental impact of desalination plants. Educating our school students through the ‘Adopt A River’ sub program is vital for younger generations to understand and practice sustainable methods of waste management, to become river ambassadors and to ensure the protection and water quality of our island’s many waterways. To date, the program has been introduced to 9-13 year olds in over 130 local schools situated along rivers throughout Bali. The school program has been further enhanced by the distribution of bilingual comic books outlining water conservation practices that everyone can employ.
With a considerable decrease in the level of the water table over the past decade, water catchment areas running dry, significant and non reversible salt water intrusion into fresh water aquifers as well as water quality and pollution issues, the time to act is now and each one of us needs to play a part. BWP proposes to promote freshwater resilience throughout the island by way of three sub programs and are calling on donations to help facilitate these. The largest percentage of funding and assistance will go towards the ‘Adopt A Well’ sub program. BWP plans to build over 130 recharge wells in strategic locations around Bali as well as sister islands Nusas Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan,
The third facet of the Bali Water Protection Program is for each and everyone one of us to ‘Adopt Water’. BWP will spearhead a one year media campaign consisting of monthly press releases, tv talk shows and billboards to remind and encourage everyone about the need to reduce consumption and conserve our vital resource. BWP needs your help to raise funds to help cover the cost of the initial program and move toward phase two. Not only will you be doing your part towards a more sustainable future, you can also be a part of the education process. Full details about the program and how to donate can be found on their fundrazr page: https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/5zytb or alternatively, go to idepfoundation.org and discover the whole story about the Bali Water Protection Program.

The Indonesian Love Affair with Uniforms Uniforms: schools, universities, playgroups, kindergartens, gamelan groups, ngaben, pelebon, government employees, nurses, ceremonies. Old fashioned Compared with the West, Indonesia is still a very communal society. Sometime after World War II, perhaps initially in response to the communist paranoia in the cold war and then generally to military uniforms during the Vietnam War, Western society decided that it wanted to be “free”, and part of that freedom (in addition to all the consumption of illicit substances) was to show individualism through the way we dress (even though we all had the same sorts of bell bottoms, paisley shirts and long hair). We deconstructed the uniform in all aspects of society, and this has prevailed until today for the most part: many government schools did away with uniforms, as did hospitals and government departments. In Indonesia, with the still prevailing paranoia about communism (ironically confused with Western liberalist socialism in many instances), uniforms are so deeply loved that they pervade nearly all aspects of daily life. Ironically, since the peak of fear of communism in 1965 that resulted in a genocide second only to the holocaust, there has only been an increase in the love affair with making everyone look the same. “Uniforming” school kids is still standard in many Western countries, particularly if they are private schools, but kindergartens, playgroups and universities are always spared. Not in Indonesia: all universities still enforce uniforms – that include long pants, starched shirts, ties and polished shoes for the guys; knee length skirts, starched blouses, bow ties and polished heeled-shoes for the girls. Government employees have to wear army like kakicoloured uniforms from Monday till Thursday and then, in Bali at least, get to wear a more relaxed, colourful (endek patterned) uniform on Fridays. Nurses have rather formal uniforms, particularly in the more old fashioned army hospitals, that include a nurses cap that went out in the 1970s in the West. If you go to a ceremony in Bali, you may notice that there seems to be a colour code, depending on the ritual: white for temple ceremonies, black for cremations (although white is often used if the deceased is of high caste) and then one particular colour for say a group of women carrying offerings down the street at ceremony time. All of this is relatively new, and has been influenced by the way other religions use colour. Even gamelan troupes didn’t start to have uniforms until the advent of competitions in the 1930s: now everyone blows their budgets on new uniforms for every festival performance and even just to perform at a one-off ceremony. Indonesia claims to be desperately democratizing, but rather ironically, the further we move into the 21st century the more people are labeling themselves as just part of uniformed groups.

Say What? Question: In about 6 months, I am planning on moving to Bali. My boyfriend wants to come along, but it looks as if it may be almost impossible for him to find work here. My family lives here, and I plan to live with them. My boyfriend is not cool with that; he’s pretty much said that he will consider me to be breaking up with him if I do this. But, I miss my family and feel as if he’s holding me back. He won’t commit to being monogamous, and though neither of us currently engages in relationships with other people, I worry about this becoming an issue in the future. He’s also done things in the past that hurt me, and he considers himself to have the right to do this; so I don’t trust him not to repeat those things, and I feel as if I would be setting myself up for more if I stay with him. On the other hand, I love him, and most of the time he makes me happy. If he insists that I choose between him and Bali, I’m pretty sure I’ll chose to move. But it feels unfair that I should have to choose, and it feels unfair to be feeling like this without telling him. The rational thing to do is probably to break up, but I’m scared of letting go of us being together. This is my first relationship, and I have no idea how I’m supposed to feel before breaking up with someone. When we aren’t together, breaking up makes sense; but when we are together, it feels insane because it feels so good to be with him. Dr. ZZ: Move to Bali. You don’t need his permission; you don’t have to wait until he does something major and dramatic, and you don’t have to wait until you hit rockbottom unhappiness. Wanting to move is enough. Feeling as if a relationship that is not working is too good to leave is not unusual. It is also not unusual to fear that you will miss him, that it will be hard to let go, and that you will have second thoughts and regrets. All that is guaranteed; it’s a normal and natural part of breaking up. But hang in there afterwards, and all those things will eventually get
magically better – it happens every time. A few years from now, he will be only a story. Someone out there is a better fit. Time and distance heal, and you have a golden opportunity to put some literal distance between you and this guy. Trust the universe to show you the way, and trust yourself to land on your feet. Question: My boyfriend and I have been together for about 3 months, and I feel as if we love each other a lot. He’s always there for me with hugs and loving. We’ve talked about our exes to a minimal extent, and now I have stumbled upon a blog of his online. In it, he has posted details of each of his previous relationships and described lots of one-night stands, threesomes, people who stole and cheated on him, etc.. I believe he is faithful to me, but I am shocked about his past and unsure of how to talk to him about it. I want to show him that I’m not like these other people, but I don’t know how to tear down the walls that he’s obviously built around himself. In his most recent post, he mentions that he is dating me and, although he ought to be happy, he feels afraid and uneasy at being in a relationship he wants so desperately. I have no idea what I’ve got myself into at this point. Maybe I’m not the one he wants. The others he’s dated have all been confident, educated and capable – things I lack. I’m not saying I’m useless because I know he loves my unwavering love and gentleness. I just don’t know what to say or do.
Dr. ZZ: It’s not that you shouldn’t want to talk to him about his past, or that early in a relationship you may observe destructive patterns that prompt you to want to reconsider committing to him; but your partner is not responsible for making his past conform to your expectations. He dated some embarrassing people and experimented in some sexy arenas; all that made him the person you fell in love with. You don’t own his past, and he doesn’t owe you a confession or an explanation. Don’t hold it against him. What you know at this point is that he loves you and treats you well, and that he has some anxieties because he wants the relationship to work so badly. How you’ve translated that into your maybe not being the one he wants is a projection wrought by your own insecurities. People often vent their feelings online, in journals, to friends and etc.. The danger of snooping around too much into someone’s e-life is coming across those momentary bursts of emotion and mistaking them for the ultimate truth. Tell him you discovered his blog and you’re reading it; so that, if he needs a more a private arena in which to vent his feelings, he may choose a more secure venue. Let him know you love him and all the ways he makes you happy. Ask if there’s anything he needs from you. Then, shut up and listen to him. The two of you may want to talk like this back-and-forth for a good long time. Then make love, play, and enjoy this time of being newly in love and figuring things out with each other.

THE HUNDRED MILE DIET, BALI STYLE Recently someone on the Facebook Ubud Community page lamented the high cost of quinoa in Ubud. Judging from the responses, I was not alone in finding it remarkable that anyone would move to a small town in rural Indonesia and expect to find abundant, affordable food products from South America. Granted globalisation has created the expectation that everything is available everywhere, all the time. But should it be? Is it cost-effective, ethical or even sensible to buy a bag of quinoa that has traveled 17,000 kilometres instead of freshly harvested, chemical-free heritage rice that was grown just up the mountain? I would argue that it is not. Food’s carbon footprint, or foodprint, is the greenhouse gas emissions produced by growing, rearing, farming, processing, transporting, storing, cooking and disposing of the food we eat. Eating seasonal, locally produced food reduces our carbon footprint enormously, leaving us some wiggle-room for a little Gorgonzola once in a while. The carbon footprint of a vegetarian diet is about half that of a carnivore’s diet. Another good argument for vegetarianism is that most food animals are raised in heavily polluting factory farms where they live in horrific conditions. Concerned carnivores will be glad to learn that Locavore is opening an ethical butchery in Ubud in June. It will offer locally produced meat, poultry and fish all of which has been raised and slaughtered humanely. The Slow Food movement pretty much popularised the concept of locavorism. Founded in 1989, Slow Food encourages people to choose food that is produced close to where they live as more ethical, economical and nutritious than food that’s imported / out of season. The popular Slow Food movement now has groups all over the world which endorse and support their local food cultures. Check out www.slowfoodbali.com for upcoming events. Ubud’s celebrated Restaurant Locavore is committed to Slow Food principals, producing stellar world class cuisine with ingredients sourced exclusively from around the archipelago. Locavore was named Best Restaurant in Indonesia in 2016 by Trip Advisor Travelers’ Choice and number 22 in Asia’s Top 50 Restaurants for 2017. I rest my case. The locavore movement really began over a decade ago. Back in 2005 a young Canadian couple decided to restrict their diet for one year to foods which grew within 100 miles (160 km) of their Vancouver home. They were deeply concerned about the carbon footprint of much of the food they ate, and made a conscious decision to reconnect with and support local food producers.
It was a gallant aspiration, but the growing conditions north of latitude 49 are not exactly tropical. They spent a year without cooking oil, rice, wheat products, beer, sugar and much more. They learned a lot about global economics and biodiversity; they discovered local farms and seasonal produce. They ate a lot of fish and potatoes. And their book ‘The Hundred Mile Diet’ started a movement that grows stronger every year.
imported one we support Indonesian producers, and they need all the help they can get. Bali’s agricultural land is disappearing at a rate of between 1,000 and 3,000 hectares a year to make way for villas, hotels, roads and shops. Young Balinese don’t want to farm any more; they want to work in all those fancy hotels, spas and restaurants. So between rapidly diminishing farmland and a shrinking work force, Bali’s agricultural sector is really suffering.
In 2007, in recognition of this new concept of sourcing food, ‘locavore’ became the word of the year for 2007 in the Oxford American Dictionary.
One way to keep it alive is to train producers in the cultivation of foods that tourists want to eat. Over the past few years that’s resulted in the evolution of world class coffee (all the Arabica used to be exported), chocolate, palm sugar, rosella products, moringa powder, cashew nuts, spirulina, chemical free fruits and vegetables and a wide range of gluten free foods, to name a few.
That same year, popular American writer Barbara Kingsolver and her family undertook the same challenge on their farm in Virginia. Her book ‘Animal Vegetable Miracle’ unfolds a year of eating only foods that her family of four was able to grow themselves or obtain locally. These adventures in conscious food selection make thoughtful reading. Limiting our food choices is hard. We’re spoiled. We’ve become accustomed to buying exotic foods from all over the world, all year round. But this abundance comes at a huge cost to the planet and to local food producers. Many travelers to Ubud these days are vegetarians and vegans who are used to eating certain foods. They bring these habits with them, unaware that there are excellent alternatives locally available. Bali is unique in many ways and its contemporary food culture has become another facet of its singularity. The island has been a trading crossroads for millenia, and the Balinese continue to adopt foods from around the world and integrate them into the indigenous cuisine. Long ago these included tofu, mung beans, peanuts, noodles and soy sauce from China, tomatoes, chilies and potatoes from South America through European traders, and cocoa and coffee from Dutch colonists. Now all these things and many more are produced locally. Bali offers a wide range of heritage rices, cashews, sea salt, low GI palm sugar, coconut, wild honey, meats, fish and poultry, and a growing variety of vegetables and fruits to visitors. High quality ‘superfoods’ like spirulna and moringa powder are now produced in Bali and the medicinal herbs turmeric, temu kunci and aloe vera are readily available. Bali is about 153 km/95 miles by 112 km/69 miles, so a 100 mile diet here covers the whole island and its seas. But we’ll stretch a point to include Java, because the food produced by the label Javara Indonesia adds a wonderful spectrum of indigenous & artisanal food products to our local shopping basket. Javara works with 50,000 farmers and 2,000 food artisans to produce over 600 premium food products. Its goal is to preserve biodiversity and bring community-based, organic products to broader markets. JAVARA is a leading social enterprise in Indonesia that works with a vast range of biodiverse community-based organic food products using ethical principles. Javara’s founder Helianti Hilman has become something of an international celebrity for her work. Eating locally is an opportunity to practice really being where we are. Every time we choose a local product over an
The Ubud Food Festival has taken the lead in raising the profile of Indonesia’s food resources. This year the festival takes place from May 12 to 14. The theme celebrates Indonesia’s culinary heritage, in which every ingredient, recipe and culinary tradition tells a story of raising the archipelago’s history, geography and diverse cultures. Participants can choose from a wide variety of cooking demonstrations, workshops, master classes, discussion panels, meals and free events to learn more about Indonesia’s amazing culinary resources. See the website for all the delicious details. So please, leave the quinoa and goji berries on the shelf and seek out all the food options available right here on Bali. With a little imagination you’ll find yourself discovering a wealth of fresh, nutritious food grown within 100 miles of where you’re standing.

SAVE THE BEES FOR A SWEETER BALI Can you imagine having a boss that demands that you work seven days week, making up to forty trips a day traveling eight kilometers to and from hundreds of workstations? And not getting paid to provide people with fruit, vegetables, coffee, seeds, nuts, cocoa, cotton and oils? That’s exactly what a queen bee demands of her workers. She also supplies millions of dollars of agricultural services each year to humankind. Without the queen bee and her workers humans would soon run out of food. Albert Einstein said many years ago, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.” A U.N.-sponsored report released in F e b r u a r y, 2 0 1 6 found that “about 40 percent of invertebrate pollinator species (such as bees and butterflies) are facing extinction.” This could have major implications for world food supply, because about 75 percent of the world’s food crops depend at least partly on pollination.” In late September 2016 I received an invitation for an event during the week long program Bali Bee Week – Save Bali Bees being held at Hatten Wines on the Bypass in Sanur. Were the bees in Bali in trouble? Were they on the endangered list? Curiosity brought me to the winery to learn more, which featured a talk by Kelly Marciano of the Natural Light Candle Company about Ratu Lestari Alami and the Plan BEE with Ratih Nurruhliati and Amanda J Garland-Hunt. During the week-long event, each day featured different programs, including wine tasting of Hatten Wines, and ‘honeylicious’ dishes from Chef Liam Nealon of Four Seasons Resort at Sayan, a former bee keeper in Australia. The exhibition was open to students, teachers and local bee keepers during the week. I attended the final evening called Slow Food Bali, with wild forest honey tasting, wine tasting and yummy honey enhanced snacks from Chef Liam Nealon. There were eight different types of wild honey from various places in Indonesia. They varied in colour and taste. It was intriguing comparing the honeys, no two were alike in colour and taste. Kelly gave a talk that enlightened us to the plight of the drastic decline of honey bees worldwide. In 2015 statistics show the USA lost 36%, Europe 20%, India 20%, Australia 25%. Seven types of bees once found in abundance in Hawaii recently became the first bees to be added to the US federal list of endangered species. There are thought to be no wild bees left in China due to excessive pesticide use. There’s no statistics for Indonesia but scientists fear the number is high due to the prevalent use of pesticides. Natural Light Candle Company produce a range of candles made from sustainable natural materials and depend on having a supply of beeswax for their production. They took the initiative of supporting the development of Ratu Lestari Alami (RLA), a grassroots program established to gather research and help conservation efforts of honey bee species, they call it Plan BEE Indonesia. It’s all about helping to save the bees. The Queen Bees for Sustainability have set up the Plan BEE Indonesia initiative to collect data, conduct research, and offer support and assistance to beekeepers, forest honey collectors, and farmers living in different areas of Indonesia. They have been conducting talks at schools and organizations like the Rotary Club, bringing awareness of the plight of the declining number of honey bees globally. Ratu Lestari Alami translates directly into English as ‘queen of sustainable natural’ - this translation has been tweaked a little to mean: “Queen Bees of Sustainable Environments”. In February 2016, Kelly joined her friends, Amanda and Ratih on a trip to explore Mount Tambora in Sumbawa. Kelly is always interested to find new sources of bees wax began
asking about farmers who work with bees in the community and learnt that there were honey hunters in the area. The women spoke to the farmers and they were not aware of the uses for the beeswax in the hives they harvested. During this trip the women discovered there was a rich culture around bee keeping and forest honey hunting across the archipelago of Indonesia. They began to find articles on the history of beekeeping in parts of Indonesia and visited an inspiring local entomologist in Bogor, West Java who connected them with an Indonesian beekeeping network so they could learn more about the bees in Indonesia. Through their research and conversations with this network, the Queen Bees journeyed to West Kalimantan, from Sintang to Jongkong and Putussibau and connected with several groups of forest honey hunters. Spending hours driving on dusty back roads and travelling by boat along the rivers into the wild of West Kalimantan brought them to some of the chief honey hunters on the island. They were impressed with how efficient and advanced the honey hunters are in West Kalimantan. The honey gathering process was done cleanly and efficiently, the honey hunters wore gloves and used sterilized bottles to store the precious honey they harvested. They also took appropriate safety precautions when in the forest harvesting the hives, a good move considering they are working with apis Dorsata, the giant honey bees found in forested areas of south east Asia that are the largest of the honey bee species. The hives they form in the forest yield a large amount of quality honey due to the amount of food available in the largely national park area and the foraging characteristics of the Dorsata. The flora in the forest is close to being in a natural state and not exposed to pesticides. The Bee Week presentation featured photos from their journey to Kalimantan, Sumbawa and Java, where they visited villages that have been harvesting bee hives for centuries, many still using their traditional methods of climbing a tall tree wielding a special curved blade to cut the hive from the tree. They spent time talking to people in the Melawi Regency, West Kalimantan, and in one of the small villages learnt that a century ago every man in the village was a hive catcher, now only 20% of the population of the village still subsist as honey harvesters, as the forest and farmers decline. Why is it important to save the bees? It’s believed that a third of all our food depends on the pollination of bees. This includes fruit, many vegetables, nuts, seeds and oils and that 85% of plants exist because of bees. More than 100 food crops are pollinated by bees. Why are the bees disappearing? • Use of pesticides • Slash and burn agriculture • Loss of biodiversity / monoculture • Loss of habitat due to deforestation • Parasites and pathogens • Climate change What is the Plan BEE so far in Bali? So far they have already installed 40 hives across Bali, primarily in North Bali as part of the North Bali Plan BEE Project with founding partners Four Seasons, Atlas Pearls and Hatten Wines. The Four Seasons at Sayan is also installing hives as part of the Plan BEE. The support of people and organizations that have adopted bee hives is greatly appreciated it has enabled the installation of beehives and supported training in North West Bali. When you adopt a bee hive you contribute to installing a new bee hive with a colony and sharing knowledge about the bees and honey with farmers and villagers. Currently at least 10 local staff and farmers who live in villages near Melaya, Grogkak, and Penyabangan areas are engaged as Bee Crews at three sites, with more sites being developed. They act as caretakers
of the hives and are being trained in the art of beekeeping as well as learning about local bee species and how to handle bees safely. Plan BEE is also supported by the BVLGARI Resort in Uluwatu who have installed bee hives on the property in the Chef’s Garden. The “Queen Bee” team in Bali Amanda and Ratih has been visiting schools talking with students about the bees and educating them on the different species in Indonesia and the risks to the bees that are emerging. They have also been travelling to different parts of Indonesia and meeting honey hunters and farmers that have a history working with the bees and documenting what they can. Where do they find the bees to inhabit the new hives? Plan BEE is about working with local communities for the preservation of the honey bees. Amanda and Ratih are currently working with two local bee keepers in Bali, Pak Matal in Jembrana regency a n d P a k Ya n i n Jimbaran. They both have over 500 hives of their own and supply the colonies for the new installations. Both bee keepers are invaluable to the team and committed to preservation of the honey bee species and sharing their knowledge. Pak Matal is also helping with education and training new bee keepers in North and West Bali and selects queens for the new hives. How much honey will an average hive produce a year? The amount of honey a hive produces a year depends on the plants in the area where the hive is placed, the more flowers in the area, the higher the yield. A hive can generally produce about 600ml of honey in 3 months, depending on weather conditions and the amount of food for the bees available in the environment. What types of bees live in Bali? There are four types of honey bees living in Bali. 1. Apis Dorsata is the wild bee usually in forested areas 2. Apis Cerana 3. Apis Meliffera 4. Apis Trigona is a smaller stingless bee How do they transplant the bees to new homes? During one of the Queen Bee’s road trips to Pemuteran in late December for the North Bali Plan BEE project, the Queen Bee group Amanda, Ratih with Ralisha and Peta travelled through very thick cloud and rainy conditions to collect bee colonies in their hives from Pak Matal in the Jembrana regency and under the cover of darkness they travelled to Sanggalangit to place the 5 hives. Bees need to be transported in the evening when they are least active to reduce the risk of them becoming unsettled and swarming. The hives were transported with care to the location at the North Bali Hatten Wines center and then guided by torch light carried to the bee center being set up on the site. The placement process taking about 2 hours. The following day, Pak Matal as the leading hand installed the newly adopted hives with the assistance of the Queen Bees and Jeremy from Hatten Wines with his bee team from the village working alongside. The installation included planting more bee friendly flora and installing the sturdy bee hive stands. Then when the hives are placed each hives is marked with the hive number, date and name of the adopter.

A Lunch full of Magic (14 May) For lovers of Indonesian food this is going to be a massive hit. Indonesia’s number one Molecular Gastronomy Chef Andrian Ishak and in house Chef Nic Vanderbeeken are teaming up to provide a magical collaboration like no other. For those wondering exactly what Molecular Gastronomy is, it is a modern cooking technique that adds science to the art, made famous by Heston Blumenthal. Most standard kitchens recognise three main components to cooking: the social, artistic and technical; Molecular Gastronomy also involves a limitless imagination and creative skill that are a real work of art. It is easy to see what creative art cooking has become especially when faced with the wonderful spices fused with Indonesian creativity. The two chefs both have impressive resumes behind them so why not come along and find out more about who they are and sample Indonesian food at its best. Do make sure you reserve a table to avoid disappointment. When Cost Where Contact

Drought by Iwan Simatupang For more than 100 years, the Indonesian government’s solution to overpopulation was the magic cure-all transmigrasi, first instituted by the Dutch in 1905. Transmigration involves relocating people from densely populated “inner islands” such as Java, Bali and Lombok to more sparsely populated Outer Islands like Kalimantan, Nusatenggara, Sulawesi, Sumatra and Papua. Under the massive program, millions of people were brought in to settle the country’s hinterlands. At its peak between 1979 and 1984, 535,000 families were relocated, an influx that had a major impact on the demographics of some regions. Set in the 1960s, Drought is the story of an ex-student, ex-soldier and ex-bandit who transmigrates to restart life as a farmer. In 1972, when Drought was published, transmigration programs were well underway in southern Sumatra, the setting for the novel, where a vast patchwork of settlements and many racial groups occupied the region. Living conditions were supposed to have been better than on the transmigrant’s home islands, but many of the communities failed because of underfunding, cultural and social conflicts, an ill-prepared resettlement infrastructure, a lack of marketing opportunities for produce and an inadequate supply of tools and equipment coupled with poor farming skills. It was rather like transplanting a malignant cancer from the breast onto the leg. Drought is one of the most searing and visceral portraits of a drought that I have ever read. A dry hot feverish atmosphere sets the mood from the very first page and permeates the whole narrative thereafter. Everything that could happened in a drought happens. The story opens on a bleak scene at the end of the world, a cracked and pitiless never-ending landscape of desolation. Supplies of food and kerosene have long since run out under the unbearable sun. Empty kettles and pots are strewn about a dry spring surrounded by a group of thirsty farmers confronting a helpless officer from the Department of Transmigration. Characters are given impersonal titles: Fatman, Glasses, The Old Man, The Beard, etc., which creates emotional distance. The main character is simply known as Our Hero, a former university student who never sat for his final exams but became a transmigrant. Because unskilled vagabonds, confused scholars and amateur philosophers were discouraged from joining, he had to apply as a “spontaneous transmigrant.” He took a crash course on farming and was sent to a hostel where he became a section leader before shipping out to a distant bare wasteland. The men dig wells, rid the scrub and long grass of roots and sumps and install pipes to channel water to nearby fields. They were lucky to get three years of harvests before the land became infertile. Although the novel has a lyrical quality and is rife with one line aphorisms, there’s no real plot. Or rather, a beginning but not a middle or end. The oppressive and soul sapping drought is the only constant throughout. The Hero’s stream of consciousness fantasizing is bewilderingly all over the place. Volumes of text is taken up with farcical rhetorical rifts and metaphysical musings. The writer seems compelled to catalog his knowledge, perhaps in order to demonstrate an erudition that he wished he possessed. But merely listing Western pop icons, historical events and schools of philosophy does not constitute deep intellect. There are rants about LSD, Stokey Carmichael, the bullfighter El Cordobes, the Beatles, the causes of the Cold War as well as homilies to literature, society, education, religion, revolution, criminality, philosophy, bureaucracy, adultery and sexuality.
Many of the social and political dimensions of transmigration are described. The drought causes delirium, erratic behavior and breeds strange people. The whole cast of tough, weird and unpredictable characters bring into question the normalcy of conventional society - bureaucrats, psychiatrists, inspired madmen, religious teachers, a beautiful woman known simply as V.I.P., a bandit who committed robbery, rape and murder and an electrical engineer who had impregnated one of his pupils. Our Hero himself is in and out of psychiatric wards. The publishing house’s blurb states that the book reflects the author’s joy of life, but I found the story glum, cynical and full of suffering. Instead of “joy,” I would use words like intense, passionate and anguished to describe the writer’s voice. The backdrop is a nonstop Waiting-for-Godot landscape of dry wells, hungry dogs, broken pots, deserted houses, bare yards, empty roads, loneliness, starvation and death. The dramatic scenes, though well-written, aren’t developed enough to have any impact. What are we to make of sentences like “Aristocracy of the soul is the topmost peak of the pyramid of constant struggle”? I personally feel that the story would have been more compelling had there been less cerebral ruminations and more real life accounts of what it was actually like for transmigrants to undergo the hardships and tragedies of a severe drought during the 1960s. Some of the writer’s experiences in Sumatra and during the revolution undoubtedly found their way into his book. Simatupang was born in 1928 in Sibolga, North Sumatra. He took part in the 1945 to 1949 revolution against the Dutch and was captured in March 1949. Though it is not evident in his biotata, the vivid imagery indicates that he must have experienced the blistering, merciless environment of a drought and the destitution of daily existence in a transmigration village. Writers like Iwan Simatupang would be unknown in the West had not the Lontar Foundation resurrected obscure Indonesian writers in their translation program. Drought is the English translation of Simatupang’s novel Kering published by P.T. Gunung Agung in 1972, but the writer’s most famous works were published posthumously: The Pilgrim in 2011 (also translated by Harry Aveling) and Square Moon and Three Other Short Plays (1997).

Drought doesn’t paint a pretty picture of transmigrant life - even if there isn’t a drought. The book’s tough and unpredictable characters are first-hand witnesses of cruel and perilous time. Finally, at the very end the rain which everyone had desperately needed for so long starts to fall torrentially, bringing more rain than anyone could ever have imagined and with it the anti-climax to this surreal and nihilistic tale. Drought by Iwan Simatupang, translated by Harry Aveling, Lontar Foundation 2013, ISBN-978-979-808-3860, paperback, 176 pages.

DIVA TIGHT Ladies remember when you first began your romance and the fire was burning hot? Have the flames reduced to mere embers lately? You can rekindle the flames and once again be the star in your bedroom. Many women after giving birth, especially more than once find that the traditional Kegel exercises aren’t working as well as they used to, making sex less enjoyable for both partners. Now there’s a way to rejuvenate your vagina and tighten those muscles back to a pre-birth state. It’s with a relatively new technology using DIVA Tight Laser Rejuvenation. I know we often think of laser treatments as cutting the skin. Well this one doesn’t. Nor is it painful at all. It works by stimulating collagen and rejuvenating the tender tissues within. This treatment is also beneficial for women who have never given birth who have reached menopause and are now experiencing vaginal dryness and painful sex thus restoring pleasure to achieve many big Ohs.
asked to lie on the bed and had a pillow placed under my hips to raise them. All three pulled on sterile gloves and prepared all of the equipment. First the doctor cleaned me down below and then used some gauze soaked with Betadine to disinfect me outside and inside. The doctor assured me that this treatment would be painless. Dr. Ong showed me this strange looking device that looked like a cross between a dildo and an egg whisk called the “cage”. It was slender and smooth looking. After taking a deep breath, she inserted this inside me. More comfortable than a speculum. Then she took the other metal gun-looking rod, which was hooked up to the laser equipment and slid it inside the other one. Ok, so far so good. The nurse stood beside me gently patting my arm to help me relax. Dr. Ong looked at me and asked if I was comfortable and I assured her that I was. Then the second doctor adjusted the dials on the machine and activated it for a few seconds. I felt a slight tingle. Asking if I was okay and assuring her that I was she activated it again. Then a third time. She asked if she could increase the power a little. Yes. The procedure was repeated. The doctor then removed the devises from inside of me and began cleaning them as the second doctor cleaned off the Betadine from my skin and dried me off. All over, finished! WOW, the whole procedure only took about 15 minutes. I was instructed to keep clean for the next week and not put anything inside for a week and no sex allowed for a week. The doctor also suggested having two more treatments spaced a month apart to increase the collagen and tighten the muscles. Then a year later another treatment to maintain the results.
THE DIVA TIGHT LASER Cocoon Medical Spa offers advanced DIVA TIGHT Laser Rejuvenation to help patients regain a normal and healthy feeling in their most sensitive parts. The revolutionary, non-surgical, “walk in walk out” 20 minute treatment for vaginal rejuvenation is almost painless, low risk and requires no ‘downtime’. DIVA Tight Laser Rejuvenation can be beneficial for women of all ages. It’s a great choice for mothers in their 30s or 40s who might need tightening after childbirth. The process of childbirth can severely stretch and tear the vaginal walls and surrounding tissues, but with this non-surgical rejuvenation, it can definitely help repair these concerns. Additionally, it’s a great choice for women in their 40s, 50s, or 60s who are beginning the process of menopause. Women who are aging have decreased estrogen, which can lead to thinning, inflammation, and drying of the vagina. This leads to vaginal atrophy. CAUSES OF VAGINAL ATROPHY: Vaginal atrophy occurs most often after menopause due to your body having less estrogen. A decline in estrogen can occur at other times besides menopause, including: • During breast-feeding • After removal of ovaries (surgical menopause) • After chemotherapy for treatment of cancer • After pelvic radiation therapy for treatment of cancer • After hormonal therapy for treatment of breast cancer VAGINAL ATROPHY SYMPTOMS: • Vaginal dryness • Vaginal itching • Intercourse pain • Vaginal laxity • Urinary incontinence DIVA offers these women tissue repair, increased tightening, and increased lubrication to make sex more enjoyable. Also, for the women who are in their 20’s reading this, even you can benefit! Diva treatment can lead to better orgasms by improving your overall vaginal health. BENEFITS OF DIVA TIGHT LASER REJUVENATION • Reduce vaginal laxity • Increase vaginal muscle tone • Enhance sensation • Reduce stress urinary incontinence • Increase vaginal lubrication I went to Cocoon Medical Spa for the DIVA Tight Rejuvenation treatment. We started with a consultation with the doctor who asked me lots of personal questions and answered all of my many questions. All of the equipment must be specially sterilized. It’s a good idea to have a Pap smear test done prior to the treatment to assure you don’t have an infection. Also, the procedure can’t be performed during menstruation. I enjoyed a leisurely cup of ginger tea as I waited in the lounge for the staff to prepare the treatment room upstairs. When ready I was escorted upstairs and asked to change into a smock skirt. When two doctors and a nurse returned I was

The staff quietly left the room to allow me to change back into my street clothes. When I emerged a few minutes later the doctor asked how I felt. “Fine. You were right. No pain”, I smiled. A week later, when I actually got to test my rejuvenated lady bits; wow, what an improvement!!! DIVA TIGHT LASER REJUVENATION PROCESS The process for DIVA TIGHT Laser Rejuvenation is simple, quick and painless for the patient and no anesthesia or pain medications are needed. • STEP 1: Experienced doctors will consult with you and confirm if you are suitable and would benefit from this procedure. • STEP 2: Your doctor may use a lidocaine numbing jelly for 10 minutes right before the treatment to minimize any discomfort if she thinks it’s necessary. • STEP 3: The doctor will use the DIVA TIGHT Laser that gently heats and ablates internal and external tissues for tightening and strengthening for up to few minutes. • STEP 4: • You may experience a small amount of bleeding. However, I had no blood. • STEP 5: The doctor recommends that you abstain from intercourse for 4 to 7 days after Diva Tight treatments.

RESULTS Typically, the full length of the vaginal canal can be resurfaced in up to three minutes, and up to three treatments spaced four weeks apart can yield optimal results. This treatment is well-tolerated by most patients with minimal discomfort and no anesthesia necessary. Their medical team will help you determine how many treatments you can expect based on your individual condition and goals. Cocoon Medical Spa Sunset Road (opposite McDonalds), Seminyak. I had heats against guys and I won, it’s a dream come true I still cannot believe it.”The Komune Pro was won by Australian surfer Brent Dorrington, who with the win over the Waida has moved up the rankings by more than 100 places. It was a tight final, finishing over the top of the Indonesian prodigy after posting a 9.17 for his second scoring wave of the final. Local News Family ‘Inconsolable’ After Bali Death The mother of a young Australian who died in a scooter accident in Bali says her family is inconsolable and that the world will be a “poorer place without her”. Ella Knights, 26, was found by a passer-by lying face down in a gutter in Canggu, North Kuta, about 3am on Thursday. A Honda scooter was lying on its side a few metres away with its engine still running. The accident came just days before the Sydney resident was due to fly home on May 1, after travelling for more than two months. In a statement released on Friday afternoon, Kaz Knights said her daughter had “touched so many people’s lives and was deeply loved by everyone she met”. “Ella will be so terribly missed by everyone and the world will be a poorer place without her,” she said. “We have received so many phone calls, messages and wishes of love from family, friends and colleagues, and we thank everyone for their support in such a tragic time. “Ella’s mother, family and friends are inconsolable and ask the media to respect their privacy in this unbelievably sad time.” Local police said witnesses had reported seeing Ms Knights riding the scooter alone and without a helmet. German Man Dies After Driving a Motorcycle into a Park Vehicle in Seminyak A German tourist died in the early hours of Monday, April 24, 2017, when the motorcycle he was driving struck a parked vehicle on Jalan Raya Basangkasa in Seminyak a1 1:15 am. The man’s Facebook page listed his employment as a chief butcher, having worked at a leading hotel in Beijing and a sausage making factory in Bali. Police believe that the German, Reinhold Kopp, was under the influence of alcohol and driving at a high rate of speed when he slammed into the back of a parked vehicle, dying instantly. Metrobali.com quotes police in Kuta who determined that shortly before the accident Kopp was drinking with friends at a bar in Seminyak. Urged by friends to return to his accommodation by taxi, the German refused, insisting to be allowed to drive home on his motorcycle. Kopp suffered fatal injuries to his head and thigh in the collision. He was ruled dead-on-arrival at the BIMC Hospital in Kuta. [balidiscovery.com April 30, 2017]
American Arrested Over Assault of Security Guard at Bali’s Sky Garden An American man has been arrested for allegedly attacking a security guard at Bali’s infamous Sky Garden club in Kuta. The American, identified in reports as Garyn Cancio, 25, was arrested by Kuta Police for the alleged assault, which took place on Sunday, around 11pm on the third floor of Sky Garden. Police say the incident unfolded after security asked Cancio to move, since he was blocking the way for the bar’s staff to get through. “The perpetrator hit the Sky Garden security, because he did not want to get out of the way. The offender was under the influence of alcohol. He became offended and hit the victim twice in the neck with a glass,” Kuta Police Commissioner Wayan Sumara said on Tuesday, as quoted by Tribun Bali. The police commissioner added that the security guard, Mengwi resident, Putu Gan, was cut on his ear and the back of his neck from the glass. “The victim needed six stitches because of his two wounds.” Police say the American will face charges that hold a max penalty of five years behind bars. Sky Garden is certainly no stranger to controversial incidents involving foreigners. A Perth teen was arrested and then eventually released in November 2016 after stopped at the popular nightclub with a bag of white powder–which lucky for him, turned out to be crushed up paracetamol. Bali X-Files: The Rat Who Wore Too Much Jewelry The villagers of Banjar Bayan in Desa Tua, Marga, Tabanan Regency, were astounded by the recent discovery of a household rat with a pronounced inclination to wear jewelry. Nusa Bali reports that 15-year-old I Wayan Suriadnyana panicked when he could no longer find a “charm ring” (Cincin Motif Bromo) that he was certain he placed in an open pouch in his bedroom closet. He alerted his mother, Ni Made Sri Marini, of the missing 5-gram gold ring with a red stone he had purchased for Rp. 2 million and the mother-son team immediately proceeded to scour his room in search of the ring. The boy’s Mother said her son had discovered his ring was missing on the morning of Tuesday, April 25, 2017, after having removed it the previous night before joining a neighborhood volleyball game. Wayan was certain that he placed the ring in an open pouch containing other items of gold jewelry. However, when he went to retrieve the ring the next morning, he discovered it was the only piece of jewelry missing from the pouch. In the course of the exhaustive search, a large rat suddenly fell from a ventilator in the boy’s bedroom with the missing ring snugly fitting around the rodent’s neck. Martini’s husband quickly captured the overdressed rat and brought it out of the bedroom where he killed it in order to remove the very snugly fitting ring. Rats are revered in Bali, as are all living things, and given the human name of “Jero Ketut.” Because of this, the dead rodent was appropriately burned as prayers were offered for the repose of its soul. While the family did not bother to call in a Hindu priest to determine the import and significance of the strange turn of events. Martini reports that her Son no longer has any interest in wearing the ring that he now intends to sell. While looking for someone to buy the ring, the ring is being stored under lock and key. Sri Martini told the press that neighbors have often lost items of value under mysterious circumstances. She said a number of locals have lost Rp. 200,000 to Rp. 300,000, but this was the first time that an item of jewelry went missing. [balidiscovery.com April 30, 2017]
Elephant Kills Handler During Feeding Time at Bali Park A male Sumatran elephant killed its keeper on Friday morning in Bali when the man entered its enclosure to feed the animal. I Nyoman Levi Suwitha, 60, also known as Mangku Levi, had been the owner of Bakas Levi Rafting, an elephant park and adventure tour company based in Bali’s Klungkung regency. The company is known for offering elephant rides through the jungle, along with rafting trips. Levi had just entered the elephant’s enclosure to feed it when the elephant suddenly wrapped its trunk around his body and threw him as far as 12 meters, according to a report by Detik. Staff on duty immediately moved to evacuate Levi. The man was rushed to Klungkung General Hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body was later sent to the morgue at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar. Medical examiners found a gash on Levi’s head, running about five centimeters long with a width of three centimeters and a depth of two centimeters. His chest also had a three-centimeter long wound, which is believed to have caused his death.
Indonesia Remains Behind Thailand in Tourism Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said that the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia is still below Thailand’s, although the country is considered as the most exotic global tourist destination. “We’re behind [Thailand] in terms of accessibility and amenity,” Arief said in Bangkok, Thailand, during the 2017 Global Summit World Travel and Tourism Council on Thursday, April 27, 2017. According to Arief, the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand reaches 30 million people annually. Meanwhile, Indonesia manages to attract roughly 11 million foreign tourists each year. Arief explained that tourists are still facing difficulties regarding the country’s accessibility, which is reflected by the lack of direct flights from a number of countries to Indonesia’s major tourist destinations. In addition, direct the flight quota to I Gusti Ngurah Rai airport in Bali is already full. “I have an idea to introduce a holiday package and a flight from Phuket to Denpasar, Bali, so that tourists could visit Indonesia,” Arief said. In addition to the issues with accessibility, Indonesia also lacks amenities related to hotel availability and local transportations. Other than Bali and Jakarta, the number of hotels available in many tourist locations is still limited. Arief claims that he will discuss the issues with local airlines. He also called on local airlines to craft connected flight packages, such as from Bangkok to Denpasar and Solo. [Tempo.co April 26, 2017] Denpasar Officials Turning a Blind Eye to Widespread Prostitution Practice in Sanur Area Prostitution is “localized” to certain notorious areas of Bali’s capital with Jalan Danau Tempe, Jalan Danau Poso, Jalan Sekar Waru and Bet Ngandang all very well known as “red light” districts of Sanur. RadarBali.com reports that the areas listed remain “off limits” to any form of law enforcement with the neighborhood and local police both turning a blind eye to prostitution and hints of human trafficking happening under their very noses. Pimps and madams work openly in running prostitution dens that stand side-by-side with family dwelling in Sanur. Some of the whorehouses – including one operating at Jalan Sekar Waru– have become sophisticated businesses, installing closed circuit television security systems. RadarBali.com says the house of ill repute is managed by a mama-san originally from Singaraja, North Bali, who coordinates “reservations” via her handphone. The woman reportedly collects between Rp. 150,000 and Rp. 200,000 from the prostitutes as the “house’s share” for each gentleman caller. When not collecting fees, the woman is said to occupy her time by preparing religious offerings. The woman and her enterprise, according to the press, are never bothered by the occasional raids conducted by police and community enforcement elements. When raids do occur, little evidence is found of any wrong doing due to advance warnings provided to pimps by “friends in law enforcement.” When actual raids do result in arrests, both the operators and women working in the trade receive very light punishments and small fines. Raids have been held in the past on the Jalan Bung Tomo area in Desa Pemecutan Kaja and on ramshackle “flap shacks” operating under the bridge on Jalan Padang Galak – Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai in Kertalanggu. RadarBali.com contends that officials in Denpasar receive regular payments each month from the houses of prostitution, with many prostitution dens transferring payments electronically to officials. The head of Community Enforcement in Denpasar (Kasatpol PP Kota Denpasar), Alit Widarma, has assured the press that he will push ahead with plans to enforce the law forbidding prostitution in any part of the Island. [balidiscovery.com April 30, 2017] Ungasan Resident Crushed by Tourist Bus on Jl. Uluwatu An Ungasan, Bali resident died in the operating room after getting crushed by a bus. Simpen, 65, had been driving a motorbike on Jl. Uluwatu, on his way home, when a tourist bus started to overtake him. The 65-year-old was apparently startled and crashed his bike, landing right in the path of the bus. “He was older, maybe the sound of the bus’ horn shocked him. He fell right alongside the bus,” a family member told Tribun Bali from Sanglah Hospital. The accident happened on Sunday around 11am. Simpen was rushed to Surya Husada Hospital, which quickly referred him to Denpasar’s Sanglah Hospital because of the severity of his injuries. The man immediately went into surgery, but was tragically declared dead in the operating room around 5pm that same day. It was a vertebral fracture that killed him, reports said. Simpen additionally suffered broken ribs and damage to internal organs. [Coconuts Bali May 1, 2017] Government May Ditch Part or All of Sarbagita Bus System The controversy over growing financial losses and low utilization rates for Bali’s Sabargita Bus System has a number of Provincial lawmakers in Bali calling for a critical re-evaluation of the Island’s mass transit system. In response to this criticism, the head of the Provincial Transportation Service, IG AN Sudarsana has sent his review of the Sabargita Bus System to the Governor recommending the parking many of the buses.
The victim’s family, along with management from the tour company, apparently denied that the death was caused by an elephant, saying that Levi’s death resulted from heart disease and fatigue. However, reports coming out of the hospital, as well as Banjarangkan district police, confirmed that Levi died from the elephant’s rampage. “The family refused to have an autopsy performed,” Banjarangkan Police Chief Ni Luh Wirati told reporters. “We’ve made a crime scene. It was a pure accident,” Wirati said.
RadarBali.com reports that Sudarsana has recommended that the bus service traveling on Corridor II between Batu Bulan and Nusa Dua be suspended due to lack of passengers. If this recommendation is accepted. A total of 15 buses would be returned to a parking area at the Sabargita depot. Also under review is the armadas of medium sized buses used on routes within the City of Denpasar with plans to limit operating hours to serve only peak periods.
“There are currently eight elephants at Bakas Levi Rafting. Levi would feed them every day and had a way with the elephants”, said Nyoman Merta, from the company’s management. “For 20 years I worked with (Levi). He really loved animals and was always good at quickly adapting. I salute him, he was really the only local entrepreneur to care about animals,” Merta said. [Coconuts Bali May 1, 2017]
Officials complain that they have encountered difficulties persuading the public to use mass transport in Bali. The Trans Sabargita System is estimated to cost the Province of Bali Rp. 18 billion per year. [balidiscovery.com April 30, 2017]
