Opportunity Knocks for Indonesian Citizens with AMD-Bali’s 2019 Divemaster Internship
AquaMarine Diving - Bali is now seeking applications for their 2019 Internship program. Each intern is assigned an AMD-B PADI Instructor as their personal mentor for the duration of the internship. Their mentor is also an integral part of the team that trains the interns from Open Water Diver, all the way through the courses to PADI Divemaster. AquaMarine’s Senior PADI Instructors have been working the Indonesian waters for many years and know the local dive industry intimately. They
Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.
The Indonesian Archipelago contains a stunningly diverse underwater ecosystem. Fed by the plankton-rich waters of the IndoPacific, it creates the world’s richest marine bio-geographic zone, with diving to suit every level of ability and a myriad of interests. With such amazing diversity, it is not surprising that new, pristine, diving locations are discovered almost daily. New destinations bring new dive opportunities which drive new dive operators to expand access to these incredible locations. Rapid expansion in the number of dive businesses creates an ever-increasing demand for well trained professional dive staff. In recognition of this demand, AquaMarine Diving - Bali (AMD-B) believes there is a very real need to encourage the local community to join and work in this expanding industry. In 2012, the company took its own steps to rally this participation and pledged to offer an annual 11 Month PADI Divemaster Internship Programme for Indonesian Citizens. A maximum of four coveted intern positions are made available each year. This ensures each intern receives individual and personalised training, as well as the one-on-one attention required to complete this extensive programme.
If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you!
AquaMarine is committed to, and firmly believes that it is vitally important to provide their interns with top quality guidance, training them to become well rounded, safety conscious and customer oriented Divemasters, ready to be employed here in Bali or elsewhere in the country.
are dedicated to passing on this expertise to the next generation of Indonesian scuba diving professionals. Within six months, each intern will have achieved the PADI Divemaster certification. Then the real work begins as they embark on the next phase of their traineeship as Dive Guides for visiting divers under the supervision of AquaMarine’s senior staff. Through this steady process, they gain experience and hands-on knowledge of their responsibilities which builds a solid foundation for their future professional careers in one of the world’s fastest growing industries.
In 2018, AquaMarine’s 7th year of the programme, three interns, Joana (W Java), Rifqi (W Kalimantan) and Hilman (SE Sulawesi) were accepted into the internship, each passing with flying colours! These three young people now see new opportunities in their lives as diving professionals who have discovered a passion for introducing fellow divers to Indonesia’s unique and fascinating underwater oasis. If you know any young Indonesians who would be suitable candidates to join AquaMarine’s award winning dive team by being part of the 11 Month PADI DM Internship for Indonesian Citizens Programme for 2019, please encourage them to e-mail: HRD-Dive@AquaMarineDiving.com for further information. Deadline for applications is 31 October 2018. The internship programme runs from 05 January – 30 November 2019. Applicants should have a good grasp of English, be competent swimmers available for interview in Bali!
A Sustainable Bali is a Shared Responsibility participated in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). This is an annual, international event that was initiated by US based non-profit group, Ocean Conservancy over thirty years ago in an effort to identify and document major causes of marine pollution in all areas of the world. From the very first International Coastal Cleanup in 1986, the movement has spread world wide with over 12 million volunteers to date!
As one of the world’s premier tourist destinations, Bali’s popularity tends to propel it into the international spotlight. While this may well be a positive in terms of economic growth and development it also presents the rest of the world with a plight that tends to plague popular holiday destinations the likes of Bali and play havoc with the sustainability of our tourism industry for the future. Bali boasts some of the most picturesque coastline in the world but the continuing battle with pollution on our beaches means that residents, businesses and visitors alike need to take a proactive approach to pollution and join forces as a community to help find solutions. Since 2013 the BHA (Bali Hotels Association - a professional group of star-rated hotels and resorts in Bali including GMs from more than 150 hotels and resorts across the island) has
The ICC encourages local communities to join together for a common goal, not only to clean up their coastlines but to collect, categorise, weigh and record all trash collected before it is sent for recycling and local waste management. In recording the data, they attempt to determine the biggest causes of marine pollution across the globe. On Saturday, September 15 the Bali Hotels Association spearheaded this year’s ICC campaign which saw no less than 15 zones across the island join in this proactive approach to better beaches across Bali! From Menjangan in the North to Nusa Lembongan, Jimbaran and everywhere in between, volunteers donned their gloves, grabbed their trash bags and took to the beaches! Finns Bali, was appointed by the BHA as zone leader for the Berawa Beach chapter of this year’s ICC with 13 other local businesses (including students, teachers and volunteers from two Tibubeneng schools) turning up at 7am on the morning of September 15 to join in the beach clean. This terrific response from the Berawa/ Canggu tourist sector bears testament to the fact that local businesses are indeed keen to lend their time, effort and support to an issue that affects all of us who
work, live and even holiday on the island. Volunteers were divided into teams and assigned a section of beach. Armed with only environmentally friendly collection bags, teams then combed the sand, picking up all items of rubbish and recording the type and size of the trash as they went. For many it became somewhat of a competition to see who could collect the most rubbish by the end of the cleanup! Trash tallies and the total number of volunteers were then forwarded on to the BHA for collation and the final numbers were astounding! Across a total of 15 zones throughout Bali, more than 4.8 tonnes of trash was collected by more than 6000 volunteers over 94 kilometres of coastline in just a few short hours on Saturday, September 15. If this is what a relatively small number of volunteers can achieve on one morning alone, imagine the possibilities if were all to lend a hand! The International Coastal Cleanup is certainly a worthy initiative and a proactive approach to our polluted beaches however it is just one day, each year. Pollution of our once pristine coastlines is a persistent problem that we all need to address on a regular basis by way of continuing education regarding effective recycling procedures, environmentally friendly waste management practices, eradication of single use plastics and regular rubbish collection at the very least! Finns Beach Club conducts a weekly beach clean of the Berawa Beach area every Friday morning at 7am. Everyone is more than welcome to join the cleanup and further information can be obtained by emailing: arik@finnsbali.com

With Every Ending is a New Beginning It was with surprise and a little sadness that I read an email from my editor that my column will no longer be a part of the Bali Advertiser, due to the need to take the newspaper in a new direction. It was a gracious goodbye with sincere thanks and appreciation for all the wonderful columns I have written over the past eight years. What a journey it has been! I have shared some deep thoughts and feelings with all of you with the hope that my insights might inspire and open you up to your greatness. In my columns, I often included many tools for self healing and empowerment. It has been an honor to share these tools with all of you, because I believe that even if I touched just one person’s life, I have made a contribution to humanity through this column. As my editor said, “It’s time for change.” Sometimes when we don’t take that leap the Universe does it for us! While I have truly loved writing this column, deep in my soul I knew that I needed to demand more of myself — to stretch even further with my desire to help others embrace their sovereignty. A part of me was scared to take this deep dive, so I held myself back by staying in the comfort zone of writing for the Bali Advertiser because it was safe and easy. The cosmic joke was on me. As I tuned into my higher self shortly after I received the email, she told me clearly, “Yes, it’s time for you to expand out into the world with your blog and YouTube channel; this is part of your mission, Michele. You can’t avoid it any longer.” Her message was delivered softly but firmly. I love that about my higher self and feel so grateful that she has my back. So this last column isn’t really about saying goodbye, because I’ll still be writing on my website blog. For those of you who have truly enjoyed following this column, I invite you to follow me on my blog here: https://spiritweaverjourneys. com/category/blog/ I will be writing weekly blogs about a variety of topics with a focus on alternative healing methods, Spiritual practices for self healing and empowerment and much more. I’m truly excited about this new direction and I can honestly say I’m grateful to my former editor for ending my column, as this opens the door for me to expand my gifts and knowledge into the world in ways that weren’t possible before. In addition to my weekly blogs, for the first time ever, I’ll be sharing channeled messages from my team and Higher Self on my YouTube channel. I have been guided that it’s time for me to have a more global presence. From time to time I will also be interviewing experts in the field of Alternative
healing and spirituality, who will share their wisdom, healing journeys and much more. You can subscribe to my YouTube channel here: http://youtube.com/c/MicheleCempaka There are already some great videos with lots of wonderful healing tools and knowledge that I think you’ll enjoy and greatly benefit from. Please be sure to subscribe so you can get notifications about my new uploads. I’m super excited by this new direction and feel that I can offer all of you so much more with these alternative mediums. I’d like to thank my editor for giving me eight great years to write my Pathways to Healing the Mind, Body & Spirit column, along with my previous columns. I am amazed by how quickly the time has flown by. I hope the Bali Advertiser will continue to thrive as it takes a new direction. I have always enjoyed the great articles, columns and browsing through the ads for second hand items and other services. I especially want to thank all of the readers who have faithfully followed my column. I don’t know who all of you are, but I would love to hear from some of you! Please feel free to connect with me at: mcempaka@gmail.com and share your thoughts about the column or whatever is on your mind. If you are a healing practitioner, Life Coach or someone with a great story to tell, perhaps you can be the subject of my blog or someone I interview for my YouTube channel? Strangely, as I come to the end of my last column, I feel a lightness in my heart. I know without a doubt, that the
Pathways to Healing
Universe has a plan for me that will be even greater than I can possibly imagine. I can’t wait to find out what that is. I look forward to our continued journey together in a whole new way. I’d like to leave you with these wise words passed down from White Buffalo Calf Woman: Lakota Instructions for Living Friend do it this way - that is, whatever you do in life, do the very best you can with both your heart and mind. And if you do it that way, the Power Of The Universe will come to your assistance, if your heart and mind are in Unity. When one sits in the Hoop Of The People, one must be responsible because All of Creation is related. And the hurt of one is the hurt of all. And the honor of one is the honor of all. And whatever we do effects everything in the universe. If you do it that way - that is, if you truly join your heart and mind as One - whatever you ask for, that’s the Way It’s Going To Be. The Danger of Glyphosate ‘Hi, I read about the $289 million court case and the glyphosate Roundup, what are the best ways to kill weeds without weed killer? Seems you just can’t stop the weeds in the tropics, just in the home garden and around the paths. Please help. Thankyou in advance. Lucas, UBUD.’ In August, a US Court ordered global chemical giant Monsanto pay $US289 million to a former school gardener who is dying of cancer, after a jury in California found Roundup (which contains glyphosate) contributed to his illness. They will be appealing of course. In 2015, the World Health Organisation’s cancer agency, the IARC, stated that glyphosate is likely carcinogenic, yet just last year the European Union decided to renew the licence for the official use of glyphosate. In the aftermath of the US court case, Monsanto has maintained that its product was an “effective and safe tool for farmers and others”. Hmmm? The result of the recent court case and linkages to glyphosate came as no surprise to many. I wrote an article on the dangers of gylphosate in 2015, which can be found at - https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/glyphosate/ Unfortunately, many are still in the dark to the undeniable dangers. Scientific evidence has shown that glyphosate can cause or accelerate cancer rates. People are spraying it around the environment and it is all over your food. Despite the fact that the dangers of Roundup are gradually becoming well-known, uncovered and exposed by various segments of the community - it still remains in heavy use around the world. Many are still unaware of the serious health issues attributed to glyphosate, although it has been banned in many places around the world. Roundup in conjunction with science has given rise to a global industry of genetically modified food. GM food crops like corn and soybean have been designed with glyphosate resistance in mind. Fields are sprayed, weeds controlled and at the same time the crop is left standing. It simplifies farming and weed control in exchange for food covered with Roundup.
People are also wholesale spraying it around the garden, and local governments around their parklands and public greenspaces too. Interestingly, after sitting on the data from its glyphosate tests for more than a year, the FDA recently or rather finally made the results public. Tests found glyphosate on 63 percent of corn samples and 67 percent of soybean samples. As a further note of interest there were no oat or wheat samples, the two main crops where glyphosate is used as a pre-harvest drying agent, resulting in glyphosate contamination of foods. The reported health risks associated with glyphosate exposure has farmers, groundskeepers and gardeners scrambling to find alternatives. Glyphosate is so widely used that traces of the of it have been found in breast milk, beer, wine (even when made with organic grapes), eggs, oatmeal and non-dairy coffee creamer, among other products. There are also environmental impacts on groundwater, rivers, streams, and oceans, glyphosate has even been detected in rainfall samples. Then there’s the issue of poisons in the food chain. For the home gardener the best alternatives are to pull the weeds, or if it’s a larger area dig out the entire garden bed, turn the soil and start again. If you spray Roundup everywhere you’ll still have to pull the dead weeds out in the end anyway. Mulch garden beds regularly or grow creeping groundcovers. Mulch with cardboard, newspaper, leaves, straw, wood chips, pebbles, stones etc. Use a sharp hoe, garden fork, or shovel to hand weed, or go for the more permanent solution of installing a weed suppressant membrane. Manual removal with a shovel, hoe or other tool is an effective spot treatment for most weeds. They may come back and need to be dug out again. When young weeds are caught early and thoroughly dug out, they won’t be able to re-seed and rapidly reproduce. Experiment with dense ground covers which can naturally prevent weeds from growing underneath. Get creative and use dense low growing flowers or even herbs as groundcover. Culinary herbs such as parsley, mint, thyme or oregano are useful choices which can effectively form a carpet around the base of plants in sparse garden beds. If you’re battling weeds in your lawn, make sure you use grass varieties appropriate for shade, drought or other difficult areas where a conventional lawn might not grow well.
For weeds growing in pavement and cracks, boiling water poured straight from the kettle usually does the job. For any other general weed killing areas using commercial strength vinegar is a proven effective. Commercial grade would normally come with an acetic acid concentration of 20% strength. Normal household vinegar at 5-10% will usually do the job on smaller weeds, but for an effective job on larger hardier ones you’ll need a commercial grade vinegar at around 20% min. The vinegar will probably be more effective on a hot sunny day. It biodegrades easily, effectively a non-toxic approach to spot killing weeds in opposition to commercial, synthetic and chemical formulas. Vinegar still always needs to be handled with care, so avoid inhaling it or getting it in your eyes. Don’t stand on the wrong side of the wind! In addition to avoiding toxic sprays, by growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs you will be feeding yourself with the healthiest produce possible free of potential toxins. Buying organic or growing your own is always going to be the best choice when it comes to your food and avoiding toxic chemicals. Key findings of an Investigative Report into pesticides and produce from EWG (source: www.ewg.org) found that: • The average potato had more pesticides by weight than any other produce. • A single grape sample and a sweet bell pepper sample contained 15 pesticides. • Single samples of cherry tomatoes, nectarines, peaches, imported snap peas and strawberries showed 13 different pesticides a piece. It was reported in August 2018 that tests commissioned by EWG found glyphosate residues on many popular oat cereals, oatmeal, granola and snack bars. Almost threefourths of the 45 samples tested had glyphosate levels higher than what EWG scientists consider protective of children’s health within an adequate margin of safety. All you need to know is that glyphosate has been linked to cancer by California state scientists and the World Health Organization.

DOES ROTARY MAKE A DIFFERENCE? YOU BE THE JUDGE Change is slow to happen…but it DOES happen. Here are stories to prove it. Education is a big deal for Rotarians so spending time visiting schools and listening to principals and teachers is invaluable. Fourteen years ago these visits led to learning about what schools wanted and needed. School leaders asked for help to obtain teaching materials for their teachers, reading books and desks for their students…and more. The schools did not have a reliable water supply so where toilets existed, they could not be ‘flushed’. In 2004, based on input from school personnel, Rotary began planning school projects that would bring maps, science kits, reading books, white boards, desks and benches for the children, desks for the teachers to classrooms. To improve children’s health, a reliable water source and toilets were included in the projects. Over a period of three years, Rotary worked with 42 schools. Within five years after project completion for the last of these schools, equipment similar to what Rotary had provided was consistently appearing in schools. Another significant change took place in schools after Rotary began donating ‘reading for pleasure’ books to elementary schools. Initially these books were kept in classrooms. The education department followed up by placing a high priority on building libraries at schools and today most schools have a special library building. Rotary continues to provide books to help fill those libraries with educational and fun to read books. BREAKING NEWS: Bali’s education department will create a ‘reading corner’ in all schools! The intent: create a literate citizenry. Government clinics are meant to serve the community, but back in 2009 the clinics were required to charge for their services. This often kept poverty level families from going to clinics. As Rotary visited schools, signs of skin and dental problems were clearly seen amongst school children.
Rotaract, the young people’s version of Rotary, came up with a great idea… do a project that brings the government clinic to the school! This very first HEALTH DAY, where clinic doctors, dentists, nurses, came to a school, examined all the children, provided medications, checked teeth (and pulled many!), was not free. Rotaract and Rotary paid for this event. The fabulous news is that today this is a regular and FREE service at schools. Even more new services are now provided…clinic nurses visit schools every six months to dispense deworming medication. Clinic staff visit schools regularly to remind children about basic hygiene, expecting every child to demonstrate the correct way to wash their hands and brush their teeth. In another rare case, one of the government clinics needed help. Two doctors came to a Rotary meeting explaining that their current water system did not have sufficient water supply or pumping power to reach the second story of their brand new clinic. The second story could not be used for patients. Rotary built a deep well, a high water tower and the second story had water. Many more patients could be treated. In 2013 Bali was facing extreme problems with HIV/ AIDS. Culturally, the subject of AIDS was essentially taboo and a positive diagnosis almost always led to stigmatization, isolation, rejection and finally death. Thus, it was important to patients that the illness remain a closely guarded secret. Maintaining patient anonymity during testing and treatment was a very serious consideration when Rotary, working with NGO Bali Peduli Foundation, added HIV/AIDS facilities to an already existing government clinic. This add-on was specifically aimed at anonymously identifying, providing medical treatment and continuing follow-up for AIDS/HIV patients. Counseling explained why protected sex was important and ease in obtaining condoms lessened the likelihood of spreading the virus. Ongoing education at high schools and in village events spread factual information and dispelled myths. Today, with better understanding of the virus, stigma associated with the virus is diminishing and proper medication is saving lives.
Water in Bali is not potable…drinking water that is not boiled or bottled will likely bring on diarrhea. To ensure water is safe can be expensive for our local families and Rotary was always looking for alternatives. When Nazava water filters came to Rotary’s attention, research proved that water from these filters was 100% potable and the filters were not excessively expensive. For comparison, cost of boiling a liter of water was IDR 150; cost of buying a liter of water was IDR 800; cost of a liter of Nazava filtered water was IDR 29. Diarrhea is a common problem and children miss days of school because of it. In 2016, Rotary started including water filters in school projects. A generation ago almost everything used in Bali was biodegradable. Today plastic is everywhere and is a major environmental p r o b l e m . Culturally a village relies on its village chief to introduce new ideas. The support and cooperation of village leaders are central to bringing about behavioral change, including plastic management. Rotary is now engaged in a project where local young people work with village and school leaders, asking that plastic be brought to a school every Saturday. The plastic is sorted by these young activists and then sold to a recycling center. Funds are deposited into a bank account and at the end of the year the money is returned to the school children! Within three weeks of starting the project, a second school has already asked to become involved. Last, but definitely not least, is the response to Lombok’s earthquake disaster. Rotary Clubs throughout Indonesia have stepped up to donate cash, supplies, expertise, special talents and time. Thousands of people on Lombok remain homeless with no way to meet their most basic needs. Rotary continues to send truckloads of supplies, build toilets and houses. Rotarians believe they can make a difference with their projects. You be the judge. Marilyn Carson RC Bali Seminyak

John Blundstone: BGreener Australian John Blundstone is a green hotel pioneer and owner of the Bali Eco Stay located in the cool mountains of central Bali. An enthusiastic promoter of social programs that support the local community, John is conscious of his resort’s impact on the environment and has an ongoing commitment to cultural and e n v i r o n m e n t a l sustainability. He and his staff collect and recycles rubbish from the surrounding six villages, teaches English classes at the local elementary school and has set up permaculture programs with regards to all aspects of his resort’s management: food gardens, wastewater disposal, building location and design. John is an active member of BGreener, a community of business leaders who are all committed to sustainability and have joined forces to tackle local and global social and environmental problems. What is BGreener all about? BGreener is a community of 65 eco-minded businesses that have become change makers in Bali. The organization is open to a wide range of businesses managed by people sharing the same vision for their destination: shops like Earth Cafe, yoga centers like Radiantly Alive, as well as suppliers, travel agents, magazines and fashion brands. Starting with the True Luxury resort, we have had a track record of offering amazing experiences to our guests and customers. We believe in the virtue of collaboration and do not see other businesses as potential competitors but more as opportunities for collaboration. The members refer clients to each other, solve each other’s operational challenges and come together to make a positive impact. How do you recruit new members?
C/BM/G-28 Feb. 18
We don’t! Members recommend the community to other potential members who are invited to join one of our gatherings so that they can get a feel of what we are all about. The cost of membership varies according to the profitability of the organization. Members are given the option to contribute in goods if they wish. We have only one criteria: to be a natural giver as whatever you are going to put in, it is going to come back to you, often in ways you do not expect. That is the beauty of a community working together. How do members collaborate?
C/Bm/I-31 Jan 18
We try to grow each other’s businesses using cross promotion, the www.BGreeener.org website and a catalogue featuring all members. We help each other solve operational problems such as staff training, recruitment and researching for new suppliers of virtually anything. We are attempting to solve the waste problem at a local level with two initiatives: Refill My Bottle (www.refillmybottle. com), a map of all the places where people can refill their water bottles (the app can be downloaded on your phone) and Precious Plastic Bali that uses low tech machines to process plastic waste. Last year, we started #iaminBaliNOW campaign to bring back tourists to Bali after the eruption of Mt. Agung. What are some benefits to members? We have co-created a database of useful resources, journalists and bloggers. Members are promoted on the www.bgreener.org website as well as on social media channels. Members are invited to stay at each other’s properties to experience other member’s brands so they can help promote them in an authentic way. When an influencer contacts a member, he tells the other members, simplifying the way we are able to communicate. Members ask other members for help when they need to improve an aspect of their business or if they need assistance with making a decision. Above all else, we are a very supportive group who share many of the same attitudes and values. Do you have to be a BGreener to benefit your organization’s programs? Not necessarily. Every month we help an Indonesian social entrepreneur by introducing him or her to the community and help boost his/her initiative. So far we welcomed Widy, the Soap Lady; Ray from Cocoil; Muntigunung and Indra
C/BM/G-15 August 18
from Art Geed. Anyone keen to join is invited to come once to an event and see for themselves what the community is all about. What changes have been afoot lately? After brainstorming and discussing at the general meetings, we changed our brand from BookGreener to BGreener, which gives a more modern feel. We also recently completely renovated and upgraded our website (www. bgreener.org) to reflect the diversity of members and make it more customer-friendly. We are now working on a membership card that will be distributed at each members’ location, inviting customers to discover other members’ businesses, an easy cross-promotion opportunity. How often do you meet? Once a month, each time at a different property, to discuss business issues. Even though most of the interactions between members happen online, our monthly gatherings are a great way to have direct contact and learn something new, ideal opportunities to exchange experiences and knowledge, to answer questions, connect with other members, share stories and network with your peers in the tourism industry. Lots of interesting guests come to these events, who contribute to the discussion. Interaction happens online via WhatsApp while all the content is stored on SLACK. Our Facebook Group is used for more informal exchanges. Can you give any examples of topics discussed? Recent themes were how to organize the best retreat, food trends, permaculture, eco-construction, risk management and the best use of human capital. Our last topic was on work/life integration and the next one will be on risk management. We are planning a week-end away together to the Gilis and Lombok to show our support for earthquake victims. We also have a focused meeting by tourism industry leaders every month to offer opportunities for members to express ongoing challenges and ask for support. What social programs is BGreener involved in? As a community aiming at making a tangible impact, it was only natural for us to come together when the series of devastating earthquakes recently hit Lombok. We reacted quickly. The very next day after the disaster our members formed a WhatsApp group to discuss how best to help the survivors and coordinate relief operations. Fifteen members/ volunteers ran it as a side activity. We immediately initiated what is today the most active Facebook Group on the earthquake (Lombok Earthquake Relief), accompanied with a map that list survivors’ needs on the ground (organized by priorities), all the drop off points and camps and how to connect with donors, NGOs and private initiatives. We dedicated a page on the BGreener website to drive donations. We sell T-shirts for Lombok, distribute donation boxes ‘Kids of Bali for Kids of Lombok,” started a daily online circle, a safe space for volunteers who need to release their anger and frustration. All of this was an incredible demonstration of the power of community in a time of crisis. We are now repeating the process for Sulawesi with a Facebook group called Sulawesi Earthquake and Tsunami Relief. In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges to making Bali a greener, more earth-friendly island? Bali is an island and by definition, it cannot expand. From a social and environmental perspective, the ever-increasing number of tourists coming to Bali are putting a huge pressure on the eco-system. We feel it is crucial for all stakeholders to come together and find solutions to mitigate the negative impact of tourism. We are the ones we have been waiting for. Anything planned for the future? BGreener has proven to be a success in Bali with a measurable positive impact, but now we would like to connect with more businesses on other islands. We already have members in Lembongan, Nusa Penida, Lombok’s Gili Islands and even Rote island in Nusa Tenggara. Eventually, we would like to expand our reach to other countries.

UBUD A DRAGON LAUNCH The 2018 Ubud Writers Festival, October 24-28, is a most fitting occasion for the launch of a quite remarkable book about the Komodo Dragons. It was Volker Kess’s decision to focus his academic photography thesis on the Komodo dragon that led this extraordinary photographer to base his life in Indonesia. Volker’s interactions with the dragons and his pursuit of other wildlife across Indonesia have changed that life and significantly shaped a successful career in environmental management. Originally intended as a “coffee table” book with vivid photography and accompanying comments, the final “Komodo; in Pursuit of the Living Legends” publication is much more, capturing the realm of the dragons in an impressive and lively compilation of eye-catching photos, travel anecdotes, victim stories and personal reflections.

VISITING LOMBOK
KING OF THE BLUES
As you may have read in Social Media Bytes, on page13 of last edition’s Bali Advertiser, many big-hearted Ubud ex-pats and tourists are helping where they can to support north Lombok, after the August earthquakes that made more than 600,000 people homeless. Now Sulawesi has – rightly – captured our shocked attention. Thankfully President Jokowi has called for international assistance for the catastrophe caused by the combined earthquakes and tsunami there late last month. In the meantime, tourism is slowly returning to Lombok, and it’s desperately needed because many locals working in tourism come from the north of the island. If they have a salary again, they can help build their families’ homes. If you have time and a bit of cash, go spend some in Lombok! Yes, it’s important to be safe. In Senggigi, I stayed this past month at Taman Unique Hotel (upmarket, Aussie engineered to earthquake standards) and Raja’s Bungalows (Raja has been there for ever, a hospitable Indonesian host with comfortable, solidly constructed little bungalows). Up north in Tete Batu, in the Mount Rinjani foothills, I discovered Andy’s little Sama Sama homestay, with tranquil views, comfortable beds, and even a campfire sing-along, if you want to join in. They can help you find families who need support, if you bring donations. Find all three places on Facebook. SINGING EARTH’S SOUL and performing Writing in English, Dutch and Indonesian, 28 year old singer-songwriter Annabel Laura shares lyrics full of passion and love for the earth and nature. Annabel will perform in Ubud on Tuesday November 1, as part of a five city Indonesian tour; her vibrant jazzy music is sure to pack out the house at Betel Nut’s Jl. Raya Ubud entertainment venue for her 7.30pm performance. There’s a powerful mix of family history behind her: Annabel’s mother is Indonesian - an anthropologist and social worker, and herself a great singer and piano and cello player. Her father was a doctor who instilled his love of blues and rock & roll in her from childhood, even taking her to a Rolling Stones concert in the Netherlands when she was only 12 years old.

Funk, blues and soul lovers rejoice! The Bali’s King of Blues, Mr Jim Larkin, is heading up to Ubud for a night of powerful songs and great dance music on Saturday October 20, at Laughing Buddha. It’s an absolute truth that blues singers get better with age. Jim has a fascinating blues background, spending many decades in the Californian blues scene before discovering Bali a few years ago. He has a big heart and – both here and back in the US – is respected as much for his commitment to working with young musicians as for his own powerful sound. In Bali, he’s nurtured a group of Indonesia’s finest young musicians and together they offer a fine sound. The menu includes excellent Indonesian dishes as well as the South American choices, with a nifty little selection process – choose one item from each of three sections – that helps you sample a few of their scrumptious offerings without breaking the bank. Boardwalk at The Bali Garden Hotel on Jln Kartika Plaza, Tuban, has been an instant success at its pleasant beachside location. Sitting under the trees, for an hour or two, even makes local residents feel as if they are also here on holidays! It has been built on the budget-priced comfort food concept. The result is that it has been busy since opening. They also have a Tapas Menu that complements their a la carte offerings. It is available all day but is best suited to their Happy Hour [4.00 to 7.00 p.m., daily] when the Sundowner Special Cocktails go down as easily as the food. Spicy Chorizo slices are perfect snacks whilst drinking as are the Thai Fish Cakes and Crumbed Chicken Strips with their Dijon mustard and honey dip. For something more substantial try the slices of Spanish Omelette or Wagyu Beef Meatballs stewed with tomato and oregano. Very popular are the range of pizzas from the giant wood-fired pizza oven at centre stage, As are the many pasta and seafood dishes [pictured]. Happy Chappy Ubud has only been open for a few weeks but they have already extended their menu, adding many seafood options. One of which is one of my favourite dishes from Happy Chappy Kerobokan, Kung Pao Prawn, using king size prawns not the little schoolies used most everywhere else. Other new items include Gurame, whole fried fish with sweet & sour or salted egg, and Garupa with shiitake mushrooms and spring onions in a spicy Szechuan hotpot. Prawns can also be ordered just stir-fried with snow peas and oyster sauce, or with salted egg. Also available is the ever popular Honey Prawns with sesame seeds. Squid is also now on the menu, salt & pepper [with chilli and garlic], black pepper or the Szechuan Kung Pao.
Jack Fish is one of Sanur’s many seafront restaurant/warungs. As the name suggests their specialty is seafood and it is very popular. Run by a local Balinese family, everything is prepared onsite, the sambals, Matah and Merah perfect for the freshly grilled fish. Budget prices only add to the attraction.

Extrablatt is booming! Great news for all those who like a good German meat meal from time to time, as I do! For many years it was just a small restaurant opposite what used to be Rumah Manis on Jln. Nakula, Legian. It has now re-opened 100 metres further down Nakula at an indoot-outdoor site that was for a very short time a Babi Guling restaurant. All the old favourites are on the new menu. My regular lunch time dishes were always the Hackbraten [meatloaf] and Geschnetzeltes [beef strips with mushrooms in a cream sauce]. Sometimes for variety the Leberkase [Bavarian style meat loaf with fried egg on top] or Rinderroulade mit Rotkraut [beef rouladen with red cabbage]. Any early morning stop [open from 9.00 a.m.] the Farmer Breakfast [fried potato with bacon. sausage, sauerkraut and egg] is essential. Great meat dishes and at very reasonable prices, every dish less than Rp.100,000 [incl. tax and service], many much less!
Mr Bob’s Bar & Grill, beachfront at Tandjung Benoa specializes in Ribs, either with BBQ Sauce or with Sweet Chilli. Spring Rolls, salads etc are among the very common starters here as well as Crumbed Calamari with 1000 Island and Tartar sauces. Mains can be Indonesian [curries, grills or pan fries] or Western [steaks, lamb chop, salmon], the burgers can be the Texan style [huge] Black Devil or the Wagyu White Angel. But it is the Ribs that they come for here, they are served with rice [steamed or pineapple], or potatoes [mashed, wedges or fries]. As is a very welcome new trend, all the prices on this menu are net of all taxes. Street Boi is streetside on Jln. Petitenget, Kerobokan, really streetside, in fact it is almost on the street. They serve BAO, soft buns steamed, fiilled with beef, chicken, pork or vegetarian combinations. Open till late and very popular as they are perfect for an anytime snack. Have a couple and it is a full sized meal. Rise and Shine Cafe, Jl. Padang Linjong, Canggu, starts the day with breakfasts. Sundays they are served all day, but surprisingly only till 11.00 a.m, on other days, a strange decision as their breakfasts are excellent and considerable. They offer a range of ‘Benedicts’ all served on English muffins, poached egg on top and breakfast potatoes on the side, in either half or full portion sizes. Traditional is with Canadian Bacon, Florentine with spinach, mushrooms, onions and feta. There is even a fish version, either grilled or blackened. More unusual is the Corned Beef Hash as a Benedict? Or you can have your Hash and Eggs on toast if you prefer? 3 Egg Omelettes are also on the menu with many different ingredient combinations. Fat Tony continues to pack them in! Small, but very popular, not much bigger than a hole in the wall Fat Tony’s is found on the extension of Jln. Melasti, Legian, just past Grandma’s on this one way street. Only open evenings, it offers a range of snacks and small meals but it is the hamburgers that most visit her for. Another page in Bali’s current hamburger revolution.
Happy Chappy of Jln. Braban, Kerobokan, have announced the opening of new outlets styled Happy Chappy Express in both Kuta and Legian, concentrating on their substantial range of dim sum product, prepared fresh every day. NC/R/G-29 August 18

Ultra Fine Dining!
QUICK REVIEW
Aperitif is amazing! The Viceroy has a long history for presenting the highest quality cuisine. Its CasCades restaurant has been one of Bali’s best for more than a decade, but CasCades is now relegated to just their allday restaurant, however it still presents an outstanding dining experience.
The Lobster meat is served with salsify [an amazingly tasty root plant of the dandelion and endive family, recently discovered in the fine dining restaurants of the world] and parmesan. Alternate dish and no less spectacular is the Papua Crab, served in a gulai [Indonesian curry stew], with kohlrabi [wild cabbage] and a citrus drizzle.
Now they have opened yet another restaurant and this one is world-class! Almost a step back in time in this magnificent room to the fine dining of yesteryear. Long time executive chef Nic Vanderbeeken moves up from CasCades to the new high-tech kitchen at Aperitif, a move that enables him to display his considerable kitchen talents.
Now it is time for the 2nd difficult decision; Duck Magret [breast of a duck raised for foie gras production] or Iberico Pork [flesh from black pigs raised in the forest on a diet of acorns]? Both are gastronomic specials, but again problem solved if two to share. The duck is with fennel, a consommé and a spicy orange sauce. The ultimate in Pork is served with piccalilli [vegetables in a mustard pickle], pumpkin and chicharron [crisp crackling].
The entire experience from arrival to departure at Aperitif is all class! The impressive entrance leads you to the cocktail bar where you are served canapés whilst you are enjoying your pre-dinner drink. The canapés begin to prepare you for what is ahead, an evening of discovery. The 1st one is just labeled Beetroot Meringue, they arrive as two micro burgers sitting atop a custom made wooden block [pictured]. Thr 2nd is adapted from that famous Dutch snack, Bitterballen, crumbed croquette balls that normally use a veal mince inside, here Chef Nic uses frog meat. 3rd is an Oyster sitting on a piece of crisp fish skin. All three are exceptional, and you could easily do the round one more time but there is much more awaiting you inside at the table where this amazing 8 course degustation continues. The Amuse Bouche is a small slice of Tomato Tart, with a pleasant tang from the sun-dried tomato used. A bowl of Karedok [Indonesian salad] follows, pickled vegetables with peanut sauce, kemangi [basil] and tofu, a welcome palate cleanser. An incredible Beef Tartare is next, raw hand cut beef tossed with quail eggs and condiments, its texture so rich it could almost be called luscious. In Belgium this dish is referred to as Steak Fillet American for some reason? Your taste buds are next teased with a fresh Ceviche, made in Peruvian ‘leche de tigre’ style [milk of the tiger] of lime juice, salt and flavourings. Tradition in Peru says that you are supposed to drink the remaining juice when the all the fish has been eaten. You now have one of two very difficult decisions to make, whether to select the Canadian Lobster or Papua Crab, as your next course. Of course if there are two of you then that problem is solved, one each!
Now comes the ‘piece de resistance’! A dish simply called Venison Wellington. A piece of prime New Zealand Venison loin is wrapped in pastry and baked in the oven, cross-sliced and served with foie gras, truffle and shimeji mushroom in a rendang sauce. A perfect way of preparimg and serving this king of all meats.

Goat cheese is served with non traditional accompaniments in this evening of adventure. Now for a surprise emanating from Chef’s childhood memories of stealing the spoon or spatula when his mother was baking cakes in the kitchen [my memory is of the icing bowl]. Two encrusted spoons arrive for you to lick, one white [apple pie] and the other dark brown [chocolate biscuits], an amusing deviation. Dessert is of Monggo chocolate, calamansi and caramel. Wine pairing is also available with three options, with basic, premium, or rare wines from their impressive cellar. As many are also available to be ordered by the glass here is an opportunity to try that special wine that you have always wanted. That completes an evening that you will long remember. It is an experience that is fitting for any special occasion or any evening when you just want to spoil yourself. World class! During the evening have a look at the impressive high tech open kitchen, one no doubt that will be the envy of every chef in Bali. Dining at Aperitif is an experience to remember.

I needed a new granola taste for my morning fruit bowl with yogurt. Earl Gray tea was waving at me from the counter. “Hmmmm. Why not?’ I thought. This delicious crunchy granola smells divine while it’s baking, and is even better when you pop a few clusters in your mouth. It has that oh-so-satisfying crunch appeal and holds up well in milk without becoming soggy.
Crunchy Earl Gray Granola Makes 4 cups Ingredients: - 2 Earl Gray tea bags - 2/3 cup almost boiling water - 2 1/2 cups rolled oats - 1/3 cup sunflower seeds - 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds - 1/3 cup almonds, cashews or walnuts, chopped - 1/4 cup sesame seeds - 1/4 cup poppy seeds - optional - 1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon - 1 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom - 1 whole lemon, well washed, the zest or skin finely grated, and the fruit juiced. You can use an orange for variation - 1/4 cup palm sugar - 1/4 cup honey - 1/4 cup canola, rice bran or coconut oil - 1 tsp. vanilla extract - 2/3 cup dried cranberries Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large metal rimmed cookie sheet with baking paper. Put two Earl Gray tea bags in a cup with the hot water and let steep while you put the other ingredients together. In a large bowl combine the oats, sunflower, pumpkin, sesame seeds, optional poppy seeds, nuts, cinnamon and cardamom. Toss this well together until all ingredients are evenly distributed. Set aside. Remove the tea bags from the cup, squeezing them to extract as much flavor as possible. In a small pot combine the tea, lemon zest and juice, the palm sugar, honey and oil. Heat this mixture, stirring but do not boil. When the palm sugar has melted, remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla. Now pour the liquid over the dry ingredients in the large bowl. Stir and toss this well with a big spoon. Pour the granola onto the prepared baking sheet and spread evenly. Slide the sheet into the preheated oven. Every 10 minutes turn the granola over, breaking up big clumps. This will allow for even browning. Do this for 40 minutes, or until browned and the kitchen smells divine. Remove from the oven and let cool a bit before adding the dried cranberries. Stir well and let cool completely before storing in an air-tight container. To serve, pour the granola into a bowl and top with yogurt, kefir, milk, or fruit juice. Happy Breakfast!

Letters To Bali Advertiser Parking Fees Dear Sir, We have been parking at the end of Jalan Duyung for years, both in the car and on the bike, for the fee of Rp3,000, but recently the fee was increased to Rp5,000. This is not a disaster, BUT, I would like to know where the money goes, because it surely does not go to cleaning up this disgusting area. There is rubbish everywhere and nothing is done. So I would like to suggest to whomever is the recipient of this money that they actually put it to good use and clean up this area and provide bins for the many tourist buses that park there and throw their rubbish on the ground, hop in the bus, and zoom off to parts unknown. This is a big area and it is busy with cars and bikes from visitors and workers, none of whom ever give a second glance to the rubbish they are walking on, but it is not a good “welcome to Bali” experience. So, my suggestion is, if the recipients of the money cannot or will not clean this up then maybe the owners of the establishments in front could give 1 staff each and give the area a good clean. Then bins could be positioned to capture all the recyclable rubbish . All that is missing for it to look like the local rubbish tip, is a flock of Ibis scratching through the rubbish.. I am happy to help clean up if there are others there and the bins are supplied. Have a lovey Day. Gia

As the FT points out, jetting in Peruvian asparagus has a carbon-cost eight times greater than consuming bananas or avocados shipped by sea. Forget veganism for the moment, which is essentially no more than a stricter form of vegetarianism. All vegans are vegetarians, but not vice versa. It is via vegetarianism not veganism that the planet will be saved. And better than that. Simply eating less meat can do it. It is not just eating too much meat that will do us in. But then... nearly 22 percent of the world’s population (7.7 billion) are already vegetarian, some 1.45 billion souls. Surely grounds for hope? On the other hand, the majority of them - don’t eat meat because they can’t afford it. So the jury’s still out on our survival. The anxieties expressed in our media show we are now entering the uncharted territory of a post-human future. Artificial intelligence can never possess human consciousness but it can deliver a reduced facsimile of it (take take look at Sophie the robot to get a preview) and can certainly develop the wherewithal to destroy us, if not carefully controlled.
Such a future can go either way. If we can get our act together, creating a society embodying our common humanity, we have a shot at the sunny uplands until such time as we are subsumed by the Sun. If not, I fear the ride is going That the FT Weekend should devote such a large amount to be dark, hairy and, in evolutionary terms, short. of space to veganism among the consuming classes is encouraging, showing veganism is catching on around Maybe that’s best for our fellow mammals since the AI the world. But will it last or is it just a fad? Lords of the Earth don’t eat meat. Shame we won’t be If the truth be told, veganism is not necessarily good for you as it, even more so than vegetarianism, lacks certain vital nutrients. It can be good for you since you will almost certainly be eating less of foods that are not good for you. It does mean you will have to spend more time thinking about, supplementing, buying and preparing your meals. Not everyone is on for that. Nor is veganism necessarily
around to see how they do.

IT’S OCTOBERBREAST! Don’t be a fool….Feel your BOOBIES! Breast cancer is a disease that should make every woman sit up and listen! It is the most common form of malignant disease in women. It develops in approximately 15% of women by the time they reach eighty years of age, and it is the leading cause of death in women aged between 44-55 years. Men may also suffer from cancer of the breast; however the incidence is 100 times less likely than in females. PREVENTION In the case of so many diseases, prevention is the best cure. Even if women have an annual breast examination by a professional (and most do not), thus it still leaves eleven months of the year that you will need to examine your own breasts. The most common signs of breast cancer are a lump in the breast; abnormal thickening of the breast; or a change in the shape or color of the breast. Finding a lump or change in your breast does not necessarily mean you have breast cancer. Additional changes that may also be signs of breast cancer include: • • • • • • • •
Any new, hard lump or thickening in any part of the breast Change in breast size or shape Dimpling or puckering of the skin Swelling, redness or warmth that does not go away Pain in one spot that does not vary with your monthly cycle Pulling in of the nipple Nipple discharge that starts suddenly and appears only in one breast An itchy, sore or scaling area on one nipple
Breast Self Examination (BSE) Prevention and early diagnosis is the best tactic in combating this fatal disease. Breast self examination (BSE) is the best way to detect abnormality of the breast in the early stages. (Full instruction on BSE is available on the Bali Advertiser Website on a previous breast cancer article). • BSE should be done at the same time each month. • The best time is a couple of days after the end of your period, when your breasts are less likely to be tender or lumpy from hormone effects. • If you no longer have periods, choose a day you can remember e.g. the first Monday of each month. Remember: Only you can do Breast Self-Examination - no one knows your body better than you do. Always consult your doctor if you are concerned about any breast changes. He or she can conduct a thorough manual breast examination, and may recommend a mammogram (breast x-rays), and / or ultrasonic examination. The combination of the methods you use will depend on your age, your medical history and your doctor’s advice. KNOW YOUR RISK FACTORS If you have a higher risk factor of developing breast cancer, you should seek professional advise and make absolutely sure that you have professional exams on a regular basis. If you do not fall into any of the increased risk groups, it does not mean that you will never develop breast cancer! Risk factors increasing the incidence of breast cancer are: • Risk increases with age, the incidence being highest in the 45 -55 year age group. • Women who have family that have suffered from breast, ovarian, uterine or prostate cancer are at in increased risk. • Women of Jewish (Ashkenazi) descent have a two-fold risk. • Risk is increased in women who have suffered from cancer of the breast, ovaries, or endometrium. • The risk is increased by factors increasing the number of menstrual cycles, i.e. menstruating at an early age and menopause over 50 years of age, never having children and not breast-feeding. • Obesity is an increased risk.
• Incidence is increased in the higher socio-economic group. HELP A SISTER Living in a place like Bali, awareness and prevention for the local population can be difficult to locate…..so why not help a (local) sister. Yayasan Rama Sesana is an amazing service mainly for women, is led by women and is mainly staffed by women. They have grown from small beginnings rooted in Bali’s traditional markets and everyone is welcome to attend our clinics. YRS is a non-profit, non-government organization focusing on sexual and reproductive health since 2004. They have a wealth of information for women on breast examination as well as many other aspects of women’s health in Indonesian. You can help local women by giving them information about these centers, as well as making a donation to the clinic so as they can continue their amazing work. Canggu’s New Healthy Eats by Anita
It is no secret that Bali is a paradise for the health conscious. From yoga retreats and fitness centers to establishments serving up nutritious gastronomic gems, each year the island sees an array of fresh hot spots for health enthusiasts, and 2018 has been no exception. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan, or on a gluten-free or paleo diet, here is a list of some of the latest cafe offerings in Canggu.
GIVE Cafe Who says that you cannot make a positive difference and enjoy a delicious meal at the same time. Masterminded by the guys behind Kynd Community in Seminyak, GIVE Cafe supports numerous local charities through its 100 percent plantbased menu of delicious dishes, drinks and coffee. This is because 100 percent of the cafe’s profit is donated to charity (you read that right, this cafe is run completely on a not-for-profit basis). Each month, the cafe’s profit is divided between three charities chosen for doing some of the most meaningful work on the island. Following their feast, each customer is given a coin to place in one of the donation boxes marked with people, planet and animalseach delineating one of the charities selected as a beneficiary for the month. Made with both love and integrity, the food at GIVE aims to nourish and nurture. The cafe’s philosophy is built on the belief that the community can gain a greater clarity of mind, strength of body and joy of spirit through wholesome, plant-based food. Opening its doors bright and early at 7 am, GIVE welcomes the day with a choice of delicious and hearty breakfast options including smoothie bowls and pancakes. For lunch and dinner, the a-la-carte menu includes vegan
takes on Indonesian favorites such as chicken satay, Balinese curry or crispy tempe salad. There is also the option of ordering nasi campur (mixed rice) with white, yellow or red rice, and a number of pre-prepared dishes from the cafe’s display cabinet. https://www.givecafe.org
Motion Cafe The ideal stop for those on a health kick, Motion Cafe specializes in dishes made with i n g r e d i e n t combinations to maximize the absorption of nutrients. Set up by a fitness guru behind Motion Fitness in Seminyak, the unassuming cafe dishes up vegetarian, vegan, paleo and gluten-free options-all sans refined sugar. Better still, all the dishes are made from produce (organic whenever possible) grown by local suppliers and delivered to the cafe each morning. Some of the stand out dishes on the extensive menu include sweet potato waffles with a choice of mouth-watering toppings and a Moroccan vegetable stew with a side of lemon couscous. The all-day breakfast menu includes gems such as chia seed coconut pudding, blueberry and banana bowl, and a range of granolas. For those with a sweet tooth, the cafe offers guilt-free dessert such as beetroot brownies, zucchini chocolate-chip muffins and warm apple blueberry pies. For those who take their health and fitness seriously, Motion Cafe offers Motion Food, or weekly meal plans, with all food and drinks delivered to your door on a daily basis. Select from Gainer to increase muscle mass, Paleo to eat like ancient hunters and gatherers, Alkaline for a healthy Ph level, or Ketogenic or Shredding for weight loss. Motion Cafe also offers consultations with a nutritionist to help individuals make better food choices without giving up the flavors they love. Any culinary advice provided can be transformed into a personalized meal plan, which can be prepared daily at the Motion Food kitchen. Those who
care about the environment will be please to know that Motion Cafe only uses glass straws, reusable napkins, and recycled drinking bottles and glasses-all need to be returned to the driver when fresh meals are delivered. http://cafe.motionfitnessbali.com
Living Food Lab With two locations at Green School, Living Food Lab has also recently opened its doors to food lovers in Canggu. The three pillars that sum up Living Food Lab’s philosophy are embodied in its name. “Living” denotes food that is alive with nutrients and enzymes, as well as awareness about how we live our lives. “Food” refers to flavors and conscious food consumption. And “Lab” embodies the spirit of culinary innovation. To fulfill its mission, the vegan cafe serves dishes that contain fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds-all foods that are rich in enzymes, vitamins and minerals. And to ensure that all the produce in its dishes remains raw, Living Food Lab does not heat any of its offerings above 45 degrees Celsius - a temperature that destroys enzymes and alters the molecular structure of food. Plus, produce such as nuts and seeds is activated by sprouting before being incorporated into dishes. Take your pick from imaginative dishes such as carrot spaghetti with tomato pesto and neat balls, mango wrap with homemade sesame garlic, or spicy cashew butter lime noodles.
Living Food Lab also serves as a co-working space, which is on the cafe’s second floor. The space, which doubles as an art gallery, features spacious tables, comfy chairs, ultra-fast Wi-Fi and lots of natural light. https://livingfoodlab.com

Bali For Kids The Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2018 will be kicking off in a few weeks. From 24-28 October, the well-known annual literary gathering will be held in and around Ubud. While the general program is aimed at grownups, the Festival also features a children’s program. On offer, is a series of hands-on workshops focusing on writing, drawing, poetry and performance. Some of this year’s offerings include workshops such as: Spin Your Own Story, Let’s Write, In Memory of My Feelings and The Power of Words. Professional authors and teachers work with children in small-group settings to empower them with writing and expressive skills.
Facebook page, which you can find by searching for TitiBatuUbud.
The Ubud Writer and Readers’s theme this year is Jagadhital, which translates as ‘the world we create.’ One of the workshops offered – Small Acts of Kindness – will lead preteens and teens, aged 12-18, through writing a short story about an act of kindness that impacted their lives.
****************************************************************** Celebrate kids birthdays or just come to play in water at Big Garden Corner in Sanur (Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Kesiman). The park features a large waterpark pool for kids, and a separate playground. There are gardens to roam in with ponds and sculptures made from recycled trash. Entrance fee is 100,000 per kid (or 75,000 per kid for locals or KITAS holders.) Parents only need to pay rp 50,000 per person for entry, and receive a free bottled drink.
Most of the workshops are free, although you still need to register and reserve a space. The children’s workshops always fill up by the time the Festival launches so go to www. ubudwritersfestival.com and search for the Children & Youth Program page and follow the links to book tickets. ****************************************************************** A new fitness center, Titi Batu, (Jalan Cempaka, Banjar Kumbuh, Mas) has opened near Ubud, across from the Pelangi School. The classes include: Mini Melody Group (18 m – 3 y), Little Mozart Group (4-6 y), Piano (4 y and up), Ukelele/Guitar (6 y and up), Singing (6 y and up) and Folk
Fusion Group (12 y and up). The Mini Melody group is a short ‘play date’ that uses fun musical activities to help develop cognitive, motor and social skills in very young children. Younger children will need to be accompanied by a parent. You can find the Ensiklomusika Music School on the bypass next to Hatten Wines Sanur (Jl ByPass Ngurah Rai No. 9). This is a great way for families and children to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Balinese culture and how it is moving forward in the modern age. The Frugal Balinist ✱ Razia Zebra Gabungan! Big police road blocks will be occurring every day around Bali from 9 am-12 pm, 2 pm-5 pm and 8 pm-12 am. Not just a few cops as in your regular razia spot checks, but multi-personnel checkpoints all across the nation will be set up on major roads checking for payment of the yearly tax (pajak kendaraan bermotor) on cars and motorcycles. Carry your STNK (Surat Tanda Nomor Kendaraan) automobile registration certificate with you at all times, showing that you’re current on your tax payments. If you haven’t paid your tax for three years, your vehicle will be confiscated and you’ll have to pay for a tow truck and storage at Rp400,000/day until the tax is paid. If you haven’t paid for less than three years, your SIM license will be taken away and you’ll be charged a fine.
✱ Home spa tips. Recreate the atmosphere of a spa at home by lighting candles and turning on relaxing white noise or meditative music on YouTube to induce a state of relaxation. *Taking a warm bath is unparalleled in relaxing the body and nervous system. *Try eucalyptus or peppermint oils for a refreshing, invigorating experience. *For a soothing, relaxing experience, use lavender or chamomile. *After a bath, put on a robe and apply a neck pillow infused with aromatherapy that you’ve heated in the microwave for a minute. Lie on your couch, listen to the music, and breathe deeply. *Apply an eye pillow to soothe tired eyes; look for one made of silk and keep it cool in the refrigerator. *Use a cucumber-infused toner to spritz on your face. *To maintain just-left-the-spa feet, use a pumice stone after your bath to polish dry areas, then apply a thick cream and put on socks to let it absorb for deep hydration. *Once a month, heat olive oil in a bowl and soak your feet for 10 minutes, then massage with the olive oil and rinse. Your feet will feel like silk and velvet. *Indulge in a creamy sugar scrub, reflexology massage and a warm paraffin treatment.

✱ Free Wi-Fi: Bandung Regency will become a ‘Smart City’ with free Wi-Fi connections this month through a fiber optic network in time for the October 12th to 14th International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Conference to allow tourists to share their Bali travel experience in real time with friends internationally via the social network.
✱ Beware fake charities. In Bali youths go around cars stopped at intersections holding charity boxes stenciled Lombok or Sulawesi Relief. Though not all of these yayasan (charity organizations) are a scam, it’s ill-advised to throw money into those boxes because there is absolutely no accountability. *If you give to a charity that purports to give orphans or poor kids lodging and/or education, ask them if you can come by anytime to check them out. If they say no, it’s only by appointment, it may not be an up and up outfit. It’s been found that in some “orphanages,” all the kids live in nearby houses and they have to be drummed up first to make an appearance when visitors arrive. If you just drop by anytime, there won’t be a kid anywhere but they will have all kinds of wonderfully creative excuses.
✱ Money Sense. The cheapest, most trustworthy and efficient way to wire money to Bali is to use Transferwise; transfers at very good rates can be done from Europe to your Indonesian bank account in as little as 5 minutes. *If you don’t pay attention to your finances, there’s always someone waiting to take advantage of your finances for you. * The Indonesian rupiah has declined in value 11.7% since January 1, 2018 and is now trading at Rp14,844 to the U.S. dollar. *A foreigner can open a bank account on Bali with a passport and a KITAS visa. *Because a new import tax of 7.5% will be applied to alcoholic beverages wine, sake, brandy, whiskey, vodka, arak and bitters, it might be the time to switch to some of the new artisan beers appearing on Bali like Stark. *Very few financial problems improve by ignoring or neglecting them. *Pembeli harus berhatihati. Caveat emptor. *Want a raise? Ask.

✱ Pemutihan. The next several months are the best time to renew your SIM or to buy used cars and motorbikes. Meaning “to cleanse, launder, legalize, whitewash,” the Pemutihan program allows the police to offer new (or renewed) Indonesian driver’s licenses (SIM or Surat Ijin Mengemudi) and sell cars and motorcycles at huge discounts. Ask at the registry of motor vehicles (BPKB or Buku Pemilik Kendaraan Bermotor) if there is a Pemutihan taking place. If you know a cop or have a good Balinese friend who knows one, they can give you access to the program. If you have a vehicle without proper documentation, you have until the program ends in December to get legal registration. ✱ Household Tips. KanGen Water Gianyar, Udayana 162, Buruan, Blahbatuh, Kab. Gianyar, tel. 812-3910-713, delivers water to your door. Many of the new KanGen companies are inconsistent, but this one is on top of it. Ask for Agus who speaks great English. *Just put your empty Bintang beer bottles on the side of the street and a pemulung (trash collector/recycler) will take them to cash in. *Fruits and vegetables will last longer if you thoroughly dry them first after getting home from the market or grocery store. *Store fruits and veggies separately and keep apples and bananas away from everything else because they emit ethylene gas that will make other produce ripen and go bad faster. *Bread ends, that you might otherwise throw away, make great croutons when toasted or sautéed with olive oil and garlic. *The dates printed on food packages have nothing to do with any food safety regulations or scientific testing in Indonesia but are only the manufacturer’s subjective estimate of the optimum level of quality or freshness.
✱ Outstanding street food suitable for vegans? 9 Angels (Jl. Suweta; 10 am-10 pm) and Oman Warung (Gg.

Cendana, Singakerta, 11 am-10 pm) in Penestanan and La Sere (Jl. Raya Sayan; 11 am-8 pm) in Sayan. They don’t come any cheaper than these two: Veggie Karma in Ubud (Jl. Hanoman 73, opp. Cocomart Supermarket; 11 am-10 pm) with a tasty all-you-can-eat buffet for only Rp55,000 and Warung Sukun in Desa Les on the main road from Singaraja to Amlapura that serves grilled fish fresh from the ocean at local prices (open every day from 11am-10 pm).
✱ Energy Savers. In the laundry, use cold water instead of hot water and hang clothes to dry instead of using a dryer. *Turn off energy vampires which can consume electricity even when they are plugged in, costing households as much as Rp2,000,000/year; use power strips to turn multiple electronics and small appliances on and off at once. *Turn water heater down to 120 degrees F. *Top greenhouse gas emitting foods, from worst to least bad: beef, cheese, pork, farmed salmon, turkey, chicken, canned tuna, eggs, potatoes. *Microwave ovens use one third less energy than conventional ovens; small toaster ovens use half the energy of conventional ovens; electric kettles use less energy to heat water than stovetops or microwaves.

How you can help Palu earthquake victims
Local News
Indonesia tsunami: Air traffic controller sacrifices life so plane can flee earthquake Anthonius Gunawan Agung, 21, sacrificed his life as his colleagues fled the Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie airport, near Palu, Central Sulawesi, when the region was rocked by a 7.5magnitude earthquake that triggered a series of aftershocks and a devastating tsunami. Desperate to clear Batik Air flight 6231 for take-off, he remained in the air traffic control tower as the ground violently shook and the earth opened up before jumping four storeys as the aircraft roared into the skies. Trapped in the tower, he was forced to jump, breaking his leg and causing internal injuries in the process. He died in hospital while waiting for a helicopter to transfer him to a different location for treatment.
The 7.4-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that devastated Palu, Donggala and Mamuju in Central Sulawesi on Friday evening has claimed 832 lives, at the time of writing, and injured many others. The earthquake destroyed infrastructure and homes, leaving survivors without shelter. According to a statement issued by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) via its social media accounts, basic necessities that are still urgently needed to help the victims are fuel (diesel fuel and gasoline), drinking water, medical personnel, medicines and field hospitals, tents, tarps, blankets, stretchers, water tanks, food, lamps, generator sets, emergency kitchens, body bags, shrouds and baby food. Humanitarian organizations have extended a helping hand, accepting donations in the form of funds, goods and volunteer work. Indonesia hasn’t had a tsunami detection buoy system in place since 2012: National Disaster Agency Residents of Indonesian city Palu in Central Sulawesi had little time to escape let alone react to a tsunami that hit hard on Friday evening, following a 7.5 earthquake. The events were in quick succession: the quake’s epicenter was just about 50 miles north up the coast from Palu. A tsunami warning was issued by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Agency, but quickly lifted about twenty minutes following the 7.5 earthquake, supposedly after the tsunami had already hit Palu. The devastation wrought by the three-meter tsunami, which along with the earthquake has managed to kill over 800 and counting, has prompted questions over Indonesia’s ability to quickly and accurately predict tsunamis and generate warnings. The country hasn’t had a functional tsunami detection buoy system, also known as deep-ocean assessment and reporting of tsunamis (DART), since 2012. This was revealed by National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho at a press conference in Jakarta on Sunday. Sutopo pointed to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Agency for answers. “Since 2012, there hasn’t been one operating, even though it’s needed for early warning. It can be asked to BMKG why from 2012 to now, it’s not there,” Sutopo said. At the same press conference, Sutopo expressed frustration at budget constraints his agency is facing. “Disaster funding continues to decline every year. The threat of disaster increases, the incidence of disaster increases, but BNPB’s budget actually decreases. This affects mitigation efforts. The installation of early warning tools is limited by a continuously reduced budget,” CNN Indonesia quoted Sutopo as saying. In December 2017, Sutopo previously drew attention to the fact that Indonesia had a total of 22 buoy sensors scattered across its waters that were totally damaged, either stolen or vandalized. Responding to Sutopo’s comments, head of BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Rahmat Triyono backed up the BNPB’s statement that the buoy system was out of service, but shifted the blame from BMKG. “Yes, it doesn’t exist anymore and doesn’t support BMKG with data,” Rahmat told CNN Indonesia. According to Rahmat, Indonesia installed buoys across multiple points throughout Indonesia following the devastating tsunami that hit Aceh in 2004, but those buoys were either lost or damaged. “Because it’s in the open ocean, no one was watching them. In fact, they were all lost. Some lost from being taken by fishermen, or dragged away by ships,” Rahmat said. “There was even one located in Muara Angke (fishing port in Java), because it was found by fishermen. Because there was GPS, it was detected. It was dismantled,” he added. The institution responsible for procuring the buoys is the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), not BMKG claims Rahmat. BPPT deputy of Natural Resources Development and Technology, Hammam Riza similarly singled out lack of resources as the main factor for lack of upkeep and attention paid to the buoys. “So far, we have been very busy with post-earthquake handling efforts while anticipation has been very minimal, not even a priority,” Hammam told BBC Indonesia. BMKG is still able to carry out early detection functions without the buoys, since they use a system based on tsunami modeling, using seismographs, GPS, and tide gauges, but having them in place would increase their modeling’s accuracy, according to Dahmat. “So, we get scenarios using tsunami modeling. At present, we have are around 18,000 tsunami models. “But if we have incoming data from the buoys, the scenarios will be more accurate, because there would be observation data.” As with any natural disaster, however, tsunami forecasting is an imperfect science and scientists can only begin to increase their accuracy as real life instances occur, providing more data. While an MIT Technology Review examination of the reliability of DART in 2011 has found that the system is flawed and has its limitations, the system could help Indonesia, Louise Comfort, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh graduate school told the New York Times. The current system is too limited as is, says Dr. Comfort, who has been trying to help bring new tsunami sensors to Indonesia and has been discussing the project with the Indonesian government, planning to bring a system prototype to eastern Sumatra this month. Unfortunately, the project reached a stalemate amongst three Indonesian agencies. “They couldn’t find a way to work together,” NYT quoted Comfort as saying. “It’s heartbreaking when you know the technology is there,” she said. “Indonesia is on the Ring of Fire - tsunamis will happen again.” [Coconuts Bali October 1, 2018].
Air Navigation Indonesia spokesman Yohannes Sirait said Mr Anthonius saved everyone on board the plane as the city was later ravaged by a tsunami that plunged the region under 10 feet of water. Mr Anthonius had his rank increased by two levels posthumously in recognition of his “extraordinary dedication”. [Express September 29, 2018] Bali cracks down on ‘bikini selfies’ at Hindu temples Instagram-snapping tourists with scant respect for Bali’s Hindu temples have prompted a policy change on the Indonesian resort island originally popularized by hippies and surfers. A social media flurry of photos showing Westerners frolicking in bikinis on stone deities and using religious sites as backgrounds for raunchy pictures has led authorities to draw up rules of conduct stating what vacationers can do, and what is likely to get them banned from temples and other sites. “We’ve seen cases of tourists playing the guitar, stealing artifacts, and even engaging in immoral conduct at temples,” Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, chairman of the Bali-based Indonesia Hindu Society, was quoted by Daily Mail as saying. “Such insolent behavior is an insult to Hindus and must not happen again,” he said, adding other tourists can prompted outrage by sitting on holy shrines including the revered Linggih Padmasana shrine. Bali takes its religious sites and rituals seriously, even enforcing a 24hour “day of silence” to mark the New Year, with religious police patrolling the streets authorized to punish foreigners who stray from their hotels. Sudiana said a group has been set up including government officials and Hindu religious leaders to draft the new rules governing temples, which from now on will be locked when there are no prayer sessions. “Those wishing to pray to enter will have to ask the guardian,” he said. He made the remarks just days after Balinese authorities proposed a law banning people from wearing bikinis or skimpy outfits in sacred areas. Cambodia already has such a law in place while Thailand operates a similar policy. Thai authorities were outraged last November when a gay couple from the U.S. bared their buttocks at Bangkok’s Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) and posted the “butt selfies” on Instagram. They were arrested and fined for public indecency. [International.la-croix. com October 2, 2018] Researchers declare bore water near south Denpasar’s Suwung rubbish dump is badly polluted & unfit for human consumption Beritabal.com reports that pollution indexes on ground well water drawn from areas surrounding the Suwung-Denpasar Rubbish Dump (TPA) are heavily polluted. Well water taken within a 1-200 meter parameter are “heavily polluted” (cemar berat) and at a distance of 201-400 meters as “generally polluted” (cemar sedang). The information on pollution levels was published in an Indonesian language article “A Study on Shallow Ground Water and Income for People Living Near the Swung Rubbish Dum in South Denpasar” that appeared in the Jurnal Ecotrophic. Researchers Agus Eka Subrata Jaya, I Wayan Suarna, and I Wayan Redi Aryanta wrote noting differing levels of pollution in water wells depending on their proximity to the massive TPA Suwung Rubbish Dump. Better water quality were found in water sources from bore wells. Researchers have found that water quality surrounding the TPA Suwung has continued to decline in quality testing carried out in 1998, 2008, and 2014. Polluted water is now found in wells as far as 400 meters from the rubbish dump. Generally, the water surrounding the TPA Suwung is sub-standard, failing to meet minimum standards set forth in the provincial Governor’s Regulation No. 8 of 2007. The researchers who are part of a Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies at Udayana University recommend that the public living near the TPA Suwung not consume water taken from shallow ground water sources. The researchers also recommend that those in charge of TPA Suwung cease using an “open dumping system” and convert to a sanitary landfill system. [www.balidiscovery.com October 2, 2018] Why Indonesia has so many earthquakes With Indonesia, the question is not whether an earthquake will occur but when. The Southeast Asian archipelago nation is reeling after yet another powerful earthquake struck Friday, followed by a tsunami, leaving hundreds of people dead and hundreds injured. The walls of water engulfed towns, swept away buildings and tossed cars like toys. Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it’s on the Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. The area shaped like a shoe spans 40,000 kilometers (25,000 miles) and is where a majority of the world’s earthquakes occur. One of the most seismically active zones on the planet, it stretches from Japan and Indonesia on one side of the Pacific all the way across to California and South America on the other. “Plate tectonics and the Ring of Fire are the main reasons why Indonesia has so many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions,” CNN meteorologist Allison Chinchar said. “The earth below them is constantly changing and constantly moving.” In recent months, the Indonesian archipelago has been hammered by earthquakes, a deadly reminder of the islands’ dangerous location. Residents were still recovering from a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the popular tourist island of Lombok in July when a 6.9 temblor was reported in August. The July quake killed about 15 people, while more than 400 people died in the wake of the August 5 tremor, officials said. The latter was also felt in neighboring Bali, another popular tourist spot. The main earthquakes are followed by dozens of aftershocks that continue for days. [CNN September 30, 2018]

Escapism 101 Escape to Bali! Yes, what an enticing idea! Yes, away from the city gloom, rush, incessant noise, stress and endless to-do lists! No wonder that this is the most popular slogan for the likes of retreats, hotels and cosharing spaces. And so we escape. And then what? And then as many discover, comes the shock of grass not greener. Bali is a place people come to… well, escape. Hit a pause button. Simplify. Like most things, escapism in and of itself is not so bad. Bali can be a way to break out of the mundane, the boxes you are squeezed into, from the subtle guilt of not fitting in. Bali is home for the visionaries, the misfits, the non-conformists. Relocation for them was an opportunity to leave behind a constraining atmosphere. Many people happily living in Bali are enjoying bidding farewell to the oddly persistent misconception that you can be called a mature wellfunctioning adult only if you have a narrowly-enough defined 9-to-5 job, conservative-enough looking family, conservative-enough looking house, conservative-enough looking you. From this point of view escape can be marvelous – removing yourself from the environment that is stifling to your personality and instead nurturing your individuality where its expression is unrestricted and valued. When does the bad and the ugly come then? One of the most common reason to move to Southeast Asia is the desire to lower the cost of living. Research shows that people who move guided mainly by the financial considerations tend to get unhappy pretty fast. Moving to spend less usually means that you still value the same comforts, it’s just that you don’t want to (or can’t afford to) pay for them as much. Alas, those first-world comforts you will not find here, and if you do you will pay the tourist prices that are not much different from what you paid in your home country. On top of that, anything that you are not used to would be seen as downgrading, as annoyance. The barking
gave to the interests, values, healing, opened the door to an opportunity (and we know Bali gives generously). dogs, the ceremonies, the smells, the garbage, the motorbike traffic will feel like irksome irritations, not charming local quirks. And don’t underestimate the joysucking power of irksome irritations! You will be expending a lot of energy on dealing, ignoring, avoiding and recovering from these daily unavoidables.
Many people escape in the name of freedom. It is no doubt a very effective short term solution to remove yourself (quite literally) from the burdens, rules, obligations, expectations and relationships (or lack thereof). Differently framed, but equally the wrong kind of escapism is a move in the name of quality of life improvement. Say you are thinking of moving because you realize you drive too much and country life will do your step-o-meter good. You think you will meditate more. You will write more. You will be good. But this new-life-starts-on-Monday mindset tends to be nothing but a convenient self-delusion. Of course you may also be wanting to escape things that are happening truly outside your control (and I mean truly, not learned-helplessness-kind of out of control). You may believe it unhealthy to live in a city. You may want to educate your children in a different system. You might be unhappy about the violence in your neighborhoods. The difference here is that you are aware what life conditions your happiness requires and you look for a place that offers a better fit to your needs. Trouble happens when the move comes from an idea that a new place will drastically change who you are and what keeps happening to you (as opposed to following your passion and creating a better environment to go on doing what you do already). Most of the happiest people I know living in Bali ended up staying here quite by accident. An extended holiday, a longing to keep coming back, an opportunity to engage with the passion more deeply, a sudden progress with an ancient head-againstthe-wall problem. There was a natural continuity there. Bali
A planned move is not necessarily a guaranteed dud. You just need to make sure you are radically honest in your assessments of what you need, why you are not getting it now and how exactly the new location will contribute to your goals. It takes a lot of courage and self-leadership to own up to the responsibility for what’s happening in your life. Relocation out of boredom, because people suck and don’t get you, because work is tough - none of these are good reasons. Adventures you make your own, people you attract yourself, work you choose. Things that happen TO you in your home country are happening BECAUSE of you and sooner or later no matter where you go you will end up with new heaps of same same but different issues. A more sustainable option is to dig deeper into your current situation and work on having the mindset, the relationships, the job, leisure that allow you to be 100% yourself and leave you 100% satisfied. No, life is not necessarily easier in Bali. There are plenty of people who end up disenchanted, bitter or depressed even in this paradise. Having your own custom system to go through your emotional baggage before taking off can prevent you joining their ranks. And this is precisely what this regular column will be about – guiding you through a more difficult and infinitely more courageous choice of building self-leadership, self-reliance and nourishing relationships as a foundation to sustainably fulfilling life. Because even the greatest visionaries need a little support.

Dreaming Retirement Dreams in Bali If you are contemplating retirement, the choice of location is a big part of the decision. Some people like to stay close to family and friends in the old hometown. Others prefer to take advantage of the empty nest and the freedom from working life to realise the travel dreams in their bucket list. And then there are the stalwart ones who are considering retirement in exotic locales where the temperature is balmy, the living is easy and affordable, the locals are friendly and the facilities are somewhat up to snuff. Ah, the decisions to be made. Bali, as popular vacation land, is probably one of the coveted locations so it begs the question: how does it stack up as a retirement haven compared to other places?
Choosing Bali in retirement may have several reasons. First, given the economic situation in the home countries and the prevalence of inadequate pensions or savings, it may be cheaper to spend your retirement years in Bali. Besides the weather isn’t bad and the prices for housing and overall cost of living, outside of the tourist hot spots, are still affordable. Many retirees also think that Indonesia would offer up similar retirement options for the grey generation with integrated social-medical services as is the case in countries like Thailand and Malaysia. Retirees undoubtedly have a checklist of needs and wants. Will they opt for a little house close by the sea surrounded by a lush garden? A mountain hide-away with splendid views? A fully furnished apartment or condo in a vibrant neighbourhood with lots of amenities and no worries about mowing the lawn? A spot in a veritable retirement village complete with all conveniences geared to making the retirement life a blissful, social, rewarding and enriching experience? Other considerations are ease of getting around, proximity to shops, restaurants and social hangouts. And yes, of course, proximity to quality medical attention. At a certain age that may even be THE deciding factor. Bali checks off a lot, if not all the required or coveted creature comforts, and it certainly offers a dream location and environment for retired people. Yet the irony is that, though many developments are taking shape in Bali, there is not yet one bona fide functioning retirement
community in Bali with western-style integrated elder care or assisted living facilities. At one time there was talk by the government to create up to 16 accredited and international standard retirement communities around the island, away from the main tourist hubs, targeting well-off expat retirees. It was to be a $10 billion project but it never really go off the ground. Only one retirement community called SadaJiwa located in Sembung, about 6 km north of Mengwi saw the light of day. SadaJiwa is a small facility and mainly caters to people requiring medical assistance by providing round-the-clock nursing services and a full-time resident medical staff, including 2 general practice physicians and therapists. It is affiliated with BROS (Bali Royal) hospital in Renon. Though it is set in a lush landscape and is reasonably well-equipped, it is not widely known as a suitable retirement option for the healthy and active set still eager for a smash-up tennis game or a vibrant community life. At present, people wishing to retire in Bali opt for a place like a house, villa or apartment where they can spend their twilight years in comfort. “Owning your own corner in paradise Bali is a real draw,” says Pratama Antonio, Director of Xclusive Properties (XP), a Bali-based real estate company that specialises in marketing high end properties for sale, rent or lease and carries an inventory of more than 700 properties. “A lot of XP’s listed homes are bought or leased as housing for present or future retirement,” notes Pratama, ‘though a good percentage are also acquired as an investment given that the ROI (return on investment) of Bali properties can be very high, especially in areas like the Bukit with its dream beaches, proximity to shops, restaurants and beach clubs.” As a long term Bali resident and RE professional Pratama has been observing the real estate trends and is well aware of the current gap in retirement residence options. He believes there is a golden opportunity in Bali and he and his team have set their long range sights on developing a retirement village. As an astute observer of the demographics of weekend and holiday travellers, he has noticed a heavy preponderance of moneyed Indonesians from Java, Medan, Jakarta and Surabaya who come to Bali to relax and escape their stressful urban environments. They are buying villas and properties as a vacation or future retirement spot. This gave rise to the idea of creating a retirement village for locals in the first planning phase, to be used as a blueprint, with some modifications, to cater to expats and foreign retirees at a later stage. A retirement village geared to the local population has different considerations as local buyers traditionally prefer to live in a family type compound surrounded by their extended families. Their list of needs and wants may also vary from that of the typical retired expat, notably in terms of architecture, type of entertainment, access to religious venues, medical facilities, etc. On the other hand, the foreign retiree may want more concrete facilities like on-site nursing assistance or the must-have traditional access to the butcher, baker and candlestick maker.
By Ines Wynn
While local retirees have a penchant towards familyoriented togetherness, foreign retirees seem to appreciate and seek out likeminded individuals of their own age and background for socialising. Their retirement goals may also differ in that many professionals, rather than leaving their career outright, are leveraging it into a part-time, remote job and hope to be useful in retirement. They are also more prone to keep their professional interests alive, maintain their skills - even develop new ones -, cultivate old or new hobbies, and seek out opportunities to help themselves, other members of their community or even for the greater good. To them retirement means the actualisation of the wishes in their bucket lists which include defining new purposes and goals in life, giving back to society and help those less advantaged. While the retirement village concept is still in the planning stages, the XP team feels the market is definitely there. Observing that about 30% of XP’s current clientele is Australian, with a very mixed base of buyers like retirees and professionals, the team thinks a logical future step is for XP to branch into the development of retirement communities geared towards Australians who want to escape the sometimes rough winters there while still remaining within reasonable distance of their home shores. While Bali may not yet have the kind of retirement haven in terms of assisted living facilities with integrated elder care as in the west, it should be pointed out that these types of facilities were created primarily as a result of the high cost of in-home care, whereas in Bali, it is vastly less expensive to hire private nursing staff and personal assistants when needed and enjoying the same benefits. In addition, the density of suitable medical services and facilities on the island makes it easy to live within hailing distance of medical practitioners and facilities. Expat investors have a few options to acquire their retirement dream properties which are fairly straightforward and have been sufficiently documented. According to Pratama, acquiring a property through leasehold is the most recommended for individual retirees and the XP staff is very knowledgeable and happy to advise and assist their clients about the processes and steps required. With its sound base and long experience in property sales and a multi-lingual staff, Xclusive Properties is well positioned to become a creditable and reliable resource for those seeking to realise their retirement dreams in Bali.
