Balinese man gets 15 years’ prison in murder of Japanese couple
An Indonesian court on Monday sentenced a Balinese man to 15 years in prison for robbing and murdering an elderly Japanese couple last year on the tourist island of Bali. The defendant, Putu Astawa, was arrested Sept. 14, two weeks after the discovery of the burned bodies of 73-year-old Hiroko Matsuba and her 76-year-old husband, Norio Matsuba, by their adopted son in their rented house in southern Kuta where the couple had lived for two years. Police said Astawa, 25, attacked the couple using a knife from their house after they resisted his attempt to rob them. After the killing, Astawa drove to Tanah Lot, a popular tourist spot on Bali’s coastline and returned with fuel to burn their bodies, they said. The woman, who was attacked first, had wounds to her neck and stomach. Her husband had wounds to his back and throat. Astawa was not appealing the Denpasar District Court’s sentence, which is the maximum possible for violent robbery leading to death. Presiding Judge Wayan Sukanila said there was no reason for leniency and the crime had damaged the image of Bali as a tourist destination. At the time of Astawa’s arrest, police said he had stolen $99 from the couple but it emerged during the trial that he took about $1,045 and the couple’s cellphones. Before Bali, the couple had lived in Bandung, the capital of West Java province, for about 10 years. [Daily Herald March 26, 2018] Seizure of Equanimity challenged in US, Indonesian courts The company claiming legal ownership of 1MDB-linked superyacht Equanimity is challenging the seizure of the US$250 million vessel in Indonesian and US courts. Equanimity (Cayman) Ltd, which is also the claimant in the US Department of Justice (DoJ) forfeiture actions, accused Indonesia and the DoJ of acting beyond the bounds of legal rules in both nations in the seizure of the yacht in Bali last month. It said the “needlessly costly and ill-conceived seizure in Indonesian waters” had jeopardised the value of the yacht. On Monday, lawyers representing the trusts that are fighting the US forfeiture lawsuit for the seized 300-foot vessel lodged a request for an emergency order to keep it in Bali. This followed DoJ plans to move the yacht from Indonesia to the US. Equanimity (Cayman) Ltd said it had filed a reply on Wednesday to correct what it said were factual misstatements and mischaracterisations in the US’ latest filing. “Contrary to the assertions made in the government’s filing, the location of the vessel has never been a secret nor have the claimants taken steps to jeopardise the vessel’s value. “The government has not taken any steps to prove its case or entitlement to the vessel, and there have been no findings that any wrongdoing occurred. The claimants, as owners of the vessel, intend to continue to protect their rights and their property.” [Free Malaysia Today March 30, 2018] Grab confirms acquisition of Uber’s South-east Asia business Singapore-based Grab on Monday (March 26) confirmed that it has acquired Uber’s South-east Asia operations for an undisclosed sum - putting an end to recent speculation about the merger between the two ride-hailing giants. Bloomberg had reported on Sunday that the two companies had reached a deal. Uber will take a 27.5 per cent stake in Grab, a figure which Grab described as “refl ective of the companies’ respective market shares”. With the acquisition, Grab will take over Uber’s operations and assets in eight countries in the region, namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Grab on Monday also said it will take over the operations of Uber’s food delivery business, Uber Eats. Grab will expand its existing GrabFood businesses in Indonesia and Thailand to two more countries - Singapore and Malaysia - following the integration of the Uber Eats business. Grab said that GrabFood will be available across all major South-east Asian countries in the first half of 2018. “To minimise disruption, Grab and Uber are working together to promptly migrate Uber drivers and riders, Uber Eats customers, merchant partners and delivery partners to the Grab platform.” The Uber app will continue to operate for two weeks to “ensure stability” for Uber drivers, who can sign up online to drive with Grab. Uber Eats will run until the end of May, after which Uber delivery and restaurant partners will move onto the GrabFood platform. [The Straits Times March 26, 2018] In Bali fish die-offs, researchers spot a human hand Tilapia is a mainstay of Balinese cuisine, but hundreds of thousands of the freshwater fish choke to death regularly in the resort island’s largest lake, for reasons that researchers say are entirely preventable. Mass fish die-offs are not uncommon in the lakes that dot the string of seismically active islands making up Indonesia, but tend to be the result of natural phenomena. In Lake Batur, a couple of hours drive east from Denpasar, Bali’s capital and biggest city, the sudden release of sulfur from the bottom of the crater lake last year led to the deaths of 15 tons of tilapia and cost local aquaculture farmers some 400 million rupiah ($29,000). The first reported mass die-off at Batur, which sits in the caldera of an active volcano of the same name, was in June 2011, and left officials scooping up more than 3 tons of dead fish in just a couple of days. An investigation at the time concluded that the incident was caused by a steep temperature gradient between the air and the water, which generated waves that churned up the mud from the lakebed, killing the fish. Now, however, researchers at Bali’s Udayana University have identified a human factor behind a string of regular die-offs at Batur. The modus operandi: A depletion of oxygen in the water near the surface of the lake. The culprit: Fish feed. Lots of fish feed. The researchers discovered that the lake contained untenable levels of chemicals - nitrites, sulphides and sulphates - introduced into the water from fish feed. Concentrations of these chemicals were particularly high in fish farms and parts of the lake close to an agricultural waste dump and residential areas. There are about 180 aquaculture operations dotted across Batur, with nearly 9,000 fl oating steel-framed cages between them, holding primarily Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish pellets that go uneaten sink past the cage mesh and into the lake below, dissolving in the water. To prevent further die-offs, the researchers recommended installing finer nets below the cages to catch these pellets. They also suggested stocking the cages with plants that would absorb the excess nutrients introduced by the fish feed. “The farmers must start to manage their cages properly to reduce the risks,” said Gede Raka Angga Kartika, one of the researchers. Water contamination from fish farms, household and industrial waste, and deforestation have put more than a dozen Indonesian lakes, including Batur, Toba and Maninjau, at risk of dying out, some as early as 2025, researchers warn. Queenslander Joshua Baker avoids jail over drug charges in Bali Queensland resident Joshua Baker has been spared jail in Indonesia. He was facing up to 15 years behind bars for bringing drugs into the country, but he will instead spend less than a year in a rehabilitation centre in Bali. In October, Baker was held by Bali police after he allegedly tried to bring marijuana and antidepressant pills in the country. Flying from Thailand, he was stopped by customs in Bali when his baggage was scanned. He was found to be carrying 28 grams of marijuana mixed with tobacco and 37 Diazepam antidepressant pills. The 33-year-old Mt Isa native did not have a prescription for the pills. He escaped police custody after his arrest but was captured about 10 hours later at a hotel in Kuta. His defense team said he suffered from mental health problems. The court heard that he used the cannabis, which he bought from a man at a bar in Cambodia, to self-medicate. Upon sentencing Baker, the three-judge panel at the Denpasar court said the Australian had damaged Bali’s reputation as a tourist destination and had undermined the country’s efforts to combat narcotics. Head judge I Wayan Kawisada said the accused’s actions contradicted the government’s program to eradicate drugs. However, Kawisada also lessened the sentence from a maximum of 15 years to less than a year in rehab. He said that Baker had shown remorse during the trial, adding that the tourist was “still young” and had psychiatric problems. Kawisada also noted that the accused was polite during court proceedings and had no prior convictions. The panel reportedly disagreed with the prosecutor’s recommendation that Baker be jailed for one year as the defendant needed rehabilitation instead. “He was proven to not be part of drug network or a dealer, that he was a user because of the mental and health problems,” Kawasida was quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald as saying. “Based on doctors and medical records, overseas and in Indonesia, [the court found] that Joshua suffers addictive bipolar that requires him to be medicated and that he has used narcotics since he was 11 years old.” The judges ordered him to attend 10 months of rehabilitation at the Kita drug treatment facility in Denpasar, around less than four months the time he had already served in jail. Baker can only leave the country and return to Australia in about six months. [International Business Times March 28, 2018] In an apparent reversal, Jakarta announces north Bali airport will go ahead, but only after north-south toll road built NusaBali reports an apparent change in direction by National leaders in Jakarta who are now signaling that a planned new international airport in North Bali may still go ahead, despite a report that plans for an airport at Kubutambahan had been scuttled. The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, has announced that Bali’s new airport of the north will be built. Pandjatan says the ground breaking for the new airport will take place “if” and “when” the North-South Bali Tollway is constructed. Meanwhile, lawmakers from the Bali House of Representatives (DPRD-Bali) are calling on the Ministry of Transportation to quickly declare the location for the Buleleng Airport. [www.balidiscovery.com April 3, 2018] Synthetic marijuana factory in Bali uncovered A joint operation conducted by the National Police and the Soekarno-Hatta Customs Office has uncovered a home industry that illegally produced synthetic marijuana, locally known as gorilla tobacco. The team arrested two men, Krisna Andika Putra, 20, and Anak Agung Ekananda, 24, for allegedly running the small factory that produced 30 kilograms of gorilla tobacco within three months. National Police narcotics unit head Sr. Comr. Asep Jenal Akhmadi said on Thursday that the Soekarno Hatta Customs Office had tipped off the police in March about a package mailed from China that contained 500 grams of 5F-ADB. The chemical is usually used as raw material in the production of synthetic marijuana. After receiving the information, the two offices began a joint operation to track down the intended recipient of the package. The team, which was supported by the Bali Police and the Ngurah Rai Customs Office, found a small drugs factory located in a two-story house on Jl. Tunjung Sari, Denpasar, only around 800 meters from the Denpasar Police building. “We confiscated around 30 kg gorilla tobacco ready to be distributed across Indonesia via an online shop, as well as production equipment,” Asep said. The two suspects admitted that the small factory had been running for the last three months. “They were going to distribute their product by an online store […] across Indonesia,” he added. The police are also pursuing the sender of the package. [The Jakarta Post March 22, 2018]

It’s not just about Us!! Yes, that’s right; “it’s not just about us!!” Regular readers to the “Rotary News” will have realised over the weeks and months that Rotary International is about “serving the community”. Raising funds and funding projects to better the health, life and education of those less fortunate than ourselves. Plus the disaster relief work when it is needed. However, Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset, is also very interested in learning what other organisations are involved in and if we can join with them in ventures/ projects. Once a month we have guest speakers from various NGO’S, Foundations, Kommunitas and individuals who agree to come and inform us on what they do. These talks occur on the last Monday of the month when our meeting is at Maya Resort, Ubud. Here they have the facility of a screen and can use power point, video etc. As our meetings are for just 1 hour, we ask our guests to limit their talk to 25 minutes! As you can imagine for some this is very difficult as they have so much to tell us! So after the meeting has been closed there is often the opportunity if anyone wishes to remain for a Q and A session. So now, let’s have some samples of those who come to talk to us, tell us what THEY DO. 1. Emas Hitam – Indonesia. Ecological solutions to poverty and development; educate and assist framers of several areas to plant moringa, - one of the richest sources of nutrients. Kadek and Wen deliver 10-15 day concentrated agricultural training to determine what help is needed. 2. Susan Tereba – talked about Dementia and Alzheimer’s. For the past 15 years had cared for her husband, and also enlisted the help of full time carers to assist her. She has written a book “Piece by Piece, Love in the land of Alzheimer’s”. Very interesting when it is first hand experience, for more information https//alz.org. 3. Chris Sperduto – Helmet Man!! Chris , also a Rotarian founded his “Helmet Man” project to educate young children, their parents and the school teachers in the
importance of wearing a helmet and fastening it! Chris goes to preschools, elementary schools dressed in his red jump suit plus helmet and delivers an interactive session with the kids, parents and teachers. He fund raises to provide the helmets FREE to children and to date has distributed more than 10,000 helmets! 4. Melati and Isabel Wijsen founded at only the age of 10 and 12, the organisation “Bye Bye Plastic Bags”! They are also Interacts, the junior section of Rotary! They attended the Green school in Ubud. They have produced a booklet to explain their work and over 1,000 had been distributed. They have recruited women to make bags to replace plastic bags but of course the sewing machines are costly! For more information listen to their talk - https:// www.ted. com/talks/melati. 5. Bill Dalton- regular readers of Bali Advertiser will know Bill from his regular columns. Bill is the founder of Moon Publications which in 1973 he wrote the first Indonesian and Bali Travel Guide. Bill has travelled to over 80 countries, during past 26 years, explored many of Indonesia’s 17,000 islands visiting them many times as well as living on them. Considered the foremost travel expert on Indonesia, he talked of the many difficulties of collecting information and travelling in very remote areas, never mind living there! 6. Ron Lilley – Bali’s most famous “snake man”!! Ron’s mobile number is a MUST on any fridge door!! No snakes present I am happy to say!! His talk was so very informative, showing how there are many snakes in Bali and the difficulty of identifying them. His main pieces of advice – if you see a snake, in your home or garden DO NOT TOUCH IT!! Ring Ron and he will come to relive you of it and give you advice on what to do! From personal experience, not long after his talk, I had occasion to ring Ron, he was amazing!! SO GLAD his number was on my fridge!! You will find him on FB, I do not want to infringe his privacy by giving out his number in this article, I hope you all agree? 7. PROJECT KARMA. This is one project which just CANNOT be ignored or left out…Glen Hulley is an ex policeman from Victoria Australia. Along with other expolice, specialist organisations they have set up an organisation to combat child sexual exploitation! The facts on this 35 billion dollar industry would leave you with your mouth wide open, as it did to all those present! This is a world-wide problem, very prevalent in SE Asia, with over 5 million children involved from as young as 4 years. They are smuggled into countries, locked in boxes, crates etc., to avoid customs, for the pleasure of the perverted! They
8. Debby Lukito Goejardi. Another project I just cannot leave out! Debby is a children’s book author since 2004 having written over 12 books and winning prizes for some of them. She has been sponsored by the Indonesian Education Department to visit Europe for research and presentations. Apart from this work, Debby along with Dewa Dharmayasa founded in 2012 the KOMMUNE KANADITYA –“motivate, inspire and empower.” They are based at the Pasar Badung ( traditional market) in Denpasar, working with the “carry-children”, children as young as 5 are made by their parents to work from 4-10 am and from 2-10pm in the market carrying, or out on the streets selling, which is of course illegal. Of 60 children only 8 attend full time school! They run a weekend programme on Saturday and Sunday mornings for 2 hours, along with a group of volunteers teaching the children to read, write, sums, craft, cooking skills etc., plus sexual education and awareness. They also try and provide health care for the children, food and outings. They also work with the disabled children in the special, school in Jimbaran, visit the children’s cancer ward in Sanglah hospital and the abandoned babies ward. So there you have some of the awesome people in Bali doing amazing work! Unfortunately space does not allow me to mention every worthwhile organisation or to fully elaborate those I have mentioned! So you now you see the meaning of my title – “IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT US”? If you are interested in attending our meetings, we meet the 2nd and last Monday of the month, we are a very friendly group with members from all over the world, you will be made very welcome!! No pressure to join!! For more information: http:/rotarybaliubudsunset.org/ http:/ www.facebook,com,groups/129279773753349 Written by Renee Heaton, member Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset.

What Does a Social Media Manager Do Anyway?
A Social Media Manager (SMM) is a fairly recent hybrid. They can also be called a Social Media Content Manager, Online or Digital Brand Manager, Digital Marketing Manager, Content Marketing Manager, Digital Community Manager or Customer Experience Manager. Basically, the role – whatever it is called -- revolves around managing a company’s brand across all of their social media platforms, creating or curating online content and interacting with customers, the public and other brands. Some companies slot this role into the Marketing Department, others into Communications. A SMM combines aspects of communication and marketing, public relations and sales. A SMM controls a company’s (or non-profi t’s) voice and brand in the digital space, interacting with customers, increasing the brand’s presence and raising its profile and (theoretically) increasing market share, sales or donations. They do this by working with other divisions within a company, such as creative, communications, media and strategy, promoting sales and marketing strategies and goals online through carefully curated [re-posted] or made content, and driving customer service excellence, with the end goal of increasing customer retention and revenue. ‘Social media has become the go-to channel for customer care, content curation and branding for modern businesses,’ wrote Brent Barnhart on the Sprout Social blog. Sprout Social is a social media software and social platform management firm. Barnhart sums up the role of a SMM: ‘They spend a majority of their time responding to and helping customers, followed by strategizing & executing [social media] content, then analyzing their successes and meeting with the team to discuss next steps.” Even though a direct link between online presence and increased revenue is still difficult to prove, organisations that do well on social media see this success translate into increased sales or donations. Also, being able to point to strong social media figures and interaction rates across a brand’s various online platforms will persuade advertisers and funders to invest in that brand. A SMM generally won’t come up with a marketing strategy themselves, although they are likely to give feedback or reports to the strategists and may share in strategy sessions. Within a small, dynamic environment where roles overlap, such as a start-up, SMMs may have key strategy roles or be people who have leading roles in the company, such as a CEO or Head of Marketing, and who are either self-taught or have prior experience in social media. The role is likely to be held by someone who has a marketing degree or background, but not always. Journalists and writers can become SMMs because of their training and expertise in communication. Good communication and excellent customer service skills, as well as social media experience, are key attributes for the role. Other important factors are constantly learning about social media and always improving skills. While many brands look for SMMs that have experience – three to five years is the standard requirement -- many companies will also accept people who have created considerable online influence or have experience building up their own personal brand, i.e. travel bloggers, Instagram stars or LinkedIn influencers. Here are three job descriptions for Social Media Managers taken recently from jobs posted on LinkedIn: A non-profit: The social media manager’s role will be to support all facets of outbound campaigns working as part of an inte-
grated team comprised of creative, media and strategy functions. The role will focus on campaign preparedness and execution across multiple channels such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram, and will span campaign planning and execution, channel and content optimization, paid media planning and buying, influencer marketing, measurement, and reporting. A media organization: Manage all social media channels and campaigns to sustain an engaging audience experience and to increase audience satisfaction for the organisation’s news-based websites. Researches and analyses social media trends, including social media ad revenue and web visitor data, to improve social media presence and campaign efficacy. Works with editorial, video and marketing teams to promote the organisation’s media properties and related events. A for-profit business: Drive the social media strategy on social media sites, relevant forums and prominent blogs. Whether using local sites or international platforms, the Digital Marketing & Social Media Manager should develop clear yearly strategy and innovative viral marketing actions to develop the esteem of the brand in line with HQ Guidelines yet adapting to local market sensitivities and relevance. Why is an experienced, savvy SMM so important? In 2016, Sprout Social, a digital analytics service provider, conducted a survey of over a thousand social media users on what they expected from brands in the digital space. They discovered that over 90% of the people they surveyed used social media to reach out directly to a company, preferring it to any other channel. Sprout Social then looked at how thousands of companies across 15 different industries behaved in the digital space. They found a huge disparity: while consumers were increasingly using social media to communicate directly with brands, brands were using social media primarily as ‘broadcast outlets,’ that is, sending messages out without actually engaging with consumers, and that their listening rates were poor: ’brands send 23 promotional messages for every one response given to their audience,’ according to the survey.

Another disparity was found in response times, with customers expecting to hear within four hours, but brands not responding before ten. (This, in my estimation is generous: when I post on a company social media site, I expect to hear back within an hour, during business hours.) The survey also found that 73% of people reported a negative brand experience on social media, a third said they would switch to a competitor if they didn’t get a response and almost 40% of respondents had used social media to publicly humiliate a company for poor customer service.
C/CE/I-06 Dec 17
By contrast, the same study showed that 75% of people were willing to share a positive customer service experience on their own social media and continue to use that brand’s products. So if you are a company or non-profit venturing into the digital space, definitely consider adding a SMM to your team or train an existing staff member for the role. Online influence will only continue to become more and more important.

Elegant Beach Chic in Berawa
Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com
Things change a lot in Canggu. Nip off the island for a nanosecond and you can bet your smoothie bowl there’s a new place to dine, shop or spa where you could have sworn there was something different the week before. Jalan Pantai Berawa has been a real hotbed of activity over the last few months and where my favourite Chinese Takeaway once stood, there now resides a new lifestylehomewares-clothing concept store. But I can assure you I’m not complaining!
If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.
In addition to their own clothing range they also stock a line of stunning lingerie from Souhela Ferrah, towels from Ranger, sarongs, accessories and resort wear from Indie Bindie Official.
Cove Island Essentials is one of those shops you’re glad you found but somehow wish you hadn’t…. for the simple reason that once you walk through the door you’ll want to buy EVERYTHING!
A cut above your standard Bali homewares-come-clothing boutique, Cove Island Essentials is not overstocked with ‘stuff’ and you’re not likely to find a multitude of the same item should you shop similar stores across the island. Australian owned, Cove is populated largely with locally produced wares, many of which are their own design.
The interior of this boutique alone epitomises chic style with creams and concrete and the delightful addition of cute, illuminated enclaves in the walls which feature soaps, scents, oils and up to the minute, locally handmade ceramics styled by Cisco & The Sun. Rugs add a colourful accent to the floors and original artworks and framed photography adorn the walls - all available for purchase I might add. Cove is spacious and inviting. Divided into two show rooms by a central wall, the first space features a wooden table choc full of household must haves from crystals to wear or to heal your home, wooden serving boards, heaven scented candles, baskets, brass utensils, vases, jewellery, jars, natural skincare and sunscreens from ‘we are feel good incorporated’. It’s one of those shops that smells good! And there’s no wonder why with ‘dear dream’ moonstone infused calming mists by Courtney & The Babes, scented California Nights soy candles, rose hip lip balms, essential body oils and more from Salt by Hendrix. But that wasn’t even my favourite part of the store. Being the clothes
obsessed shopper that I am, I was inevitably drawn to the second room where Cove Island Essentials showcases their own divine line of designs. Natural linens and cottons, muted tones and stylish cuts meant that I was immediately drooling over wrap dresses and femininely frilled tops. Colours are delicate ranging from light lemons, pretty pinks, navies and neutrals to whites and classic blacks. Within minutes I’d already singled out some sleek wide leg pants to partner the prettiest dusty pink crop top. Team that with a pair of their sweet fringed raffia slides and a set of Cove Island bikinis and I was all styled up for a Sunday session with the beautiful peeps at Omnia or Ulus!
From its pastel hued facade fringed with a ‘driftwood’ look verandah to the airy and spacious interior, Cove Island Essentials oozes a Bali-Bondi-Byron beach chic style that adds a little extra elegance to Berawa. Located on Pantai Berawa opposite the original Milk and Madu site, Cove Island Essentials is open daily. Check out their Facebook and Insta accounts: COVE island essentials @cove_island_essentials and stay tuned for Spring 2018 when their online shopping site is set to go live! www.coveislandessentials.com
Get Back Into the Weekly Swing of Things With JSA popular sports such as gymnastics, swimming, dance, tennis and newcomer, Parkour added into the mix. Trampolining is still included in the line up and now incorporates Bounce Boards into each training session for extra flips and fun, not to mention a whole new dimension of skills.
For many of us, holidays mean a welcome break from weekly routine, a well deserved rest and a chance for the family to indulge in some yummy treats that might usually be off the menu. Hello chocolate my old friend…. Yikes! you say, but with the start of the new school term it’s time to get back on track to that healthy lifestyle. That might mean gym time or footy training for us but it’s just as well the Junior Sports Academy has everything the kids need to get outdoors and active too. Term four’s fixtures span out over the course of eleven weeks from Monday April 2nd to Saturday June 23rd. This means there’s plenty of time to take on a different activity and learn new skills or continue to hone the techniques that have already been established for your favourite sport. Football is definitely a predominant flavour for term four with Soccer, Rugby, AFL and Futsal featuring, along with perennially
Under a slightly different format for this term, Futsal is now included in the Soccer schedule which means students can also incorporate this fast paced footy into their soccer training sessions on Mondays at 3.00pm. Alternatively, indoor soccer fans can choose to sign up for just Futsal alone. Designed to develop new skills and further enhance techniques learned in soccer, indoor Futsal is an ideal complement to the regular discipline of soccer and a great way to further prepare for JSA Sunday soccer friendlies with other Bali sporting academies. These Sunday morning comp games are a terrific tool to boost team morale and fire up a healthy competitive spirit amongst the kids. Players signed up for the term in at least two out of the three weekly training sessions can participate in the Sunday comp for free, otherwise standard drop in rates apply. For more information regarding session times and dates for Sunday matches, check out page four of the JSA Term Four brochure here: www.jsabali.com JSA continues to offer the choice of dropping in for a training session here and there (a great option for short term travellers or holiday makers keen for their kids to continue with sport whilst away) or committing to the whole term. Of course, considerable discounts apply when you sign up for a full term of ten weeks or more and don’t forget that Finns members are
also eligible for further discounts of up to 30%. Winning!! In addition to regular training sessions on the JSA schedule, did you know that coaches are also available for private sessions for individuals or small groups? You might even wish to further develop your child’s sporting skills with private lessons. Feel free to discuss these possible training options further with your child’s coach or drop them an email to: jsa@finnsrecclub.com The new Term Four JSA schedule provides all the information you need to know about each sport, training timetables, coaches and fee structures. Simply head to their website www.jsabali. com and click the tab: “After School Program” to download the current brochure. Stay tuned for some exciting info about their upcoming holiday camps scheduled for the July/August Summer Vacation.
Honouring The Brave and The Fallen…
One of Australia and New Zealand’s most important national days, Anzac Day is a time to remember all of those military service men and women who have served their country in times of war, conflict and peace keeping activities in periods past and present. Though you may find yourself on Bali sand or soil on April 25th, that doesn’t mean you cannot pay your respects to those fallen and returned service personnel and celebrate this special day in true Anzac style.
Satisfy your cravings for some typical Anzac Day tucker with a traditional meat pie or the Aussie barbecue and the day wouldn’t be complete without fresh baked Anzac cookies. There might even be a bit of adult entertainment throughout the afternoon with a ‘coin toss or two’…. if you know what I mean…… Heads up! Of course, Splash Water Park will be open as usual and just for Anzac Day, Splash is inviting all Australian and New Zealand military personnel, past and present, to ride the slides for the day free of charge! Everyone else is welcome to join in some slide action too for the regular advertised price of Rp350k per adult and Rp230K per child.

Say What? Question: I have a problem when it comes to being attracted to people. The best way I can explain it is I basically have no “friend zone.” If I have a lot in common with someone, I find myself wanting to be intimate with them. I try to be discerning about the people I actually try to initiate anything with. If I feel as if they have no interest in me, I don’t bother; but this still results in a lot of rejections, which confuse me. It’s not that I think I’m awesome, but my barriers to desiring intimacy with another person seem to be much lower than they are for most people. My question isn’t, “How do I get more people to sleep with me?” Rather, “Why do I insist on making myself vulnerable to everyone I have anything in common with?” Is this indeed a healthy approach to sex? And, if so, how do I stop feeling this way? Dr. ZZ: While it seems as if you have a handle on your preferences and forms of sexual free-will, it appears as if you have difficulty figuring out how to deal with others’ freewill and with how your decision-making processes diverge from those of others. Obviously, many people have a different set of standards for sexual encounters than you do. Though these are neither better nor worse, chances are few of them have to do with your being particularly desirable or undesirable. Some people, for example, are in the search of a long-term monogamous relationship. Others simply don’t engage in casual sex for reasons of preference or concerns about safety. Some may not be interested in your gender or don’t “hop into bed” with strangers. Still others may know that they’re too drunk to get aroused or to consent to sex at the moment you happen to hit on them. The possibilities are endless. To find it less confusing why other people may not want to have sex with you requires empathy. Although there may be better indicators than you’re using for discerning who’s actually a good prospect for casual sex, I would ask you to
C/E/I-14 March 18
examine a couple of points you made in terms of your own boundaries and attitudes toward sex. Your use of the word “vulnerable,” for example, is curious. Is it the act of putting yourself out there and asking for sex that prompts you to feel vulnerable, or is it the fact that the sex itself is not always as easy, effortless, and emotionally carefree as you expect? Chances are there’s something in the way you tell yourself your sex life “should” be that doesn’t conform to your actual lived experiences. Perhaps a little bit isn’t really enough to be satisfying. Secondly, you may want to examine the way you tend to fall in lust with anyone you like. Perhaps there’s a way of creating a friend zone by turning down the volume on your sexual interest in people for a second, and listening to other, subtler clues - the degrees or different types of desire at play. Chances are some people are more physically attractive, and other people’s minds are sexier than their looks. Likewise, some of the people you like would surely make better jogging buddies, dance partners or artistic collaborators than sex partners, yeah? To get unconfused about rejection and to attempt to create a sliver of a friend zone, you may want to work on differentiating the people around you in terms of characteristics other than sex, and consider the ways in which you may be more vulnerable than you think.

Question: I went on a date with a guy a little over a week ago, and while he seemed nice enough at first, further evaluation has led me to believe that, although he’s a nice guy, I don’t have any desire to strike up any kind of friendship or romance with him. The problem is that prior to this assessment, I agreed to maybe having dinner again. He has since texted me twice, stating that he really wants to see me again, and soon. I don’t want to “let him down easy” or be completely brutal, but I am having a hard time finding the words to say, “Sorry, I was wrong. Let’s not be friends.” I guess one upside is that I’ll be leaving Bali in about six weeks, so I never intentioned for this to be a long term anything. The downside is that he mentioned the possibility of meeting me in Europe once I return from Bali; so my mind has already raced ahead to worst case stalking scenario. I know that once I let him down, I have no control over how he takes it. At the same time, I don’t want to be cruel or ambiguous about my intent to never see him again. Dr. ZZ: He’s probably harmless, but it’s also important to trust the feeling in your gut that made you think of the word “stalking.” The optimum approach is to keep your reply short without explanations. Excuses like “I don’t have time” or “I’m too busy” just motivate a stalker to kick into high gear. A simple “I got your emails. I enjoyed meeting you, but I’m afraid I must decline a second date. Sorry! Please take care” ought to be sufficient. A cool guy will just say something like “Sorry to hear that! No harm done.” An uncool dude will demand explanations so that he can shoot them down or reply with angry rebuttals. If you get “Can I ask why?” in response, you’re better off not answering. Ditto for “But you said…” You don’t owe anyone a second date.

14 The Spa Guru’s Home Spa: Enjoy Professional Spa Treatments at Home by Shari Hartman What scrub is best for body cleansing? Can saunas rebalance the body? Is there an effective re-hydrating mask for men? Would a facial party appeal to you? Which Bali medical spas offer colonics and use high tech equipment for detoxifying treatments? Want to keep your feet and hands in good condition while watching TV? These are just a few of the remedies addressed in The Spa Guru’s Home Spa, self-published in 2015. Spa Guru (guru means teacher in Indonesian) is the nickname given to author Shari Hartman, spa consultant, spa trainer, spa manager and spa journalist who has worked for more than 20 years in Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, and her hometown of Vancouver, Canada. She holds certificates in a variety of massage techniques and other healing modalities. Spa practitioners in Bali and the world over swear by her methods. Hartman has always loved teaching other people how to be beautiful. After a car accident in 1980, she underwent four years of therapy and discovered that massage, more than any other healing practice, helped her to return to a state of health. She studied Shiatsu for three years and worked in Vancouver doing the bodywork system in the early 1990s. Not long after, Hartman had her first eye-opening experience with Javanesestyle massage when an elderly masseuse in Jakarta gave her a body scrub with lulur paste. Since arriving on Bali in the early 1990s, Hartman has established and managed two spa schools – Bali BISA and Jamu Spa School - which have since become top spa teaching institutes. She has published spa related articles for publications popular with expats and tourists such as FFV, Spa Asia magazine, Bali Style and writes her own column, Beauty & Health, in Bali Advertiser. Few of us are able to go to a spa every week. But with the advice of this experienced Asian-based expert, you’ll be able to create professional spa treatments at home using natural or organic products: facials, body scrubs and wraps, hair conditioning treatments, aromatic baths, manicures and pedicures plus how to host a spa party at home with your friends as well as recommended treatments for sunburns, aromatherapy, teens, couples and men. A full onethird of spa goers are men who seek relief for stress and sore muscles by using hydrating facials, skin cleansers and toners, anti-aging egg and seaweed masks and manicures for hands and feet. Chapter Eight contains a lexicon of spa treatments as well as illuminating stories about how other cultures approach beauty and relaxation. Hartman explains the history of spas in Europe and Asia, the European medicinal spa, the American Spa Revolution, the remarkable success stories of Martha Tilaar’s products, Kim and Kary Collier’s Jamu Traditional Spa, the genesis of Asia’s first destination spa and the emergence of spas as centers for healing and nourishing the body. This book is not just about performing treatments, but gives tips on how to create a serene ambiance in the home - a huge part of the overall spa experience. Your home can be turned into a spa in which flowers, lighting, aromatherapy scents, herbal teas, candles, soothing music and privacy are essential. In a Sparty, participants give each other facials and treatments. To create a pleasing atmosphere, the space as well as the products are prepared beforehand. Choose a propitious date - a birthday, graduation, anniversary or job promotion - for such a celebration among friends. The book’s recipes are based or adapted from authentic Asian traditional treatments unique to Asia, including recipes from 22 Bali spas that have been used for hundreds of years from the royal courts down to local villages. Recipe instructions and usage are clearly written and easy to follow. Most treatments
use everyday ingredients that can already be found in the kitchen or bathroom. On Bali, supplies like honey, yogurt and fruit are readily available at the supermarket or traditional market. A few recipes employ exotic ingredients. Readers might be challenged to find almond oil, apricot oil, jojoba oil, macadamia nut oil, grapeseed oil, Shea butter, cocoa butter and beeswax, but Hartman suggests alternatives available in tropical Indonesia. What to look for in essential oils is explained, covering issues that oil users need to be aware of. Hartman recommends going for the best quality and the highest purity that you can afford, avoiding fragrance oils and synthetic oils. The Young Living brand, though not cheap, make excellent essential oils. Hartman explains why harsh chemical ingredients are so hard on the skin, hair and internal organs. She warns against using popular mercury based skin-whitening products which introduce dangerous heavy metals into the system. Out of curiosity, I examined the list of ingredients on Indonesianbranded shampoos and hair conditioners that my family uses in the bathrooms of our home and found the harmful ingredients Methyl and Propyl.
C/E/I-31 Jan 18
Hartman first identifies and then gives guidelines on how to care for dry, oily, combination, balanced and sensitive skins. Though many people in S.E. Asia have naturally radiant dark brown skin, due to an extensive diet of fried foods many in the region suffer from excessively oily skin so should use products only suitable for that type of skin. Her two all-important beauty tips: 1) adopt a daily skin-care routine at night and in the morning, which moisturizes the skin and protects it from environmental assault; 2) do regular facials that improve the skin and slow down the aging process.

To research her book, Shari asked friends who managed famous 5-star spas to contribute recipes. Taksu Spa and the Maya Ubud Resort on Bali, the Puri Mas Resort on Lombok and the Chiva-Som in Thailand were delighted to contribute recipes and photos. The large format size allows you to lay the book on the counter and create your concoctions hands-free. The large print makes the instructions easy to read from a distance. Practical information, such as a complete list of supplies and equipment necessary for spa treatments, is included. It’s a pity there is no index or Table of Contents. In order to find out how to make a homemade hair conditioner, I had to page through the 236page book until I found the chapter “Rejuvenate Your Tresses” to discover how to make hair cream baths. C/E/G-11 April 18
Our grandmothers used natural products that in bygone eras were easily available in the kitchen. Now it’s time to turn back the clock. The Spa Guru’s Home Spa does a commendable job of helping you stay young looking with beautiful skin and few wrinkles using professional recipes in the comfort of your home at a fraction of the price. Hard copies of the book are available directly from the author: spa.inspirations@gmail.com.

Traditional Thai DD is just that, simple traditional Thai. Not fusion, not Royal Thai and certainly not what is often passed off as Thai cuisine at so many restaurants all across Indonesia A few years back DD had a small warung, it was classified as our Best Cheap Eat of the year, then sadly it disappeared. Now DD is back with a real restaurant in central Sanur, so all lovers of Thai cuisine are happy again! DD cooks Thai, Thai! The food served here is what Thais eat at home, simple, no fancy serving and no infl ated prices. Those not conversant with Thai cuisine often believe that it is all hot with much chilli, a misconception as not all Thai dishes use chilli, and only a very few use much chilli. The balanced Thai meal should be a selection of totally different dishes some hot, some sweet, some sour, etc. and a soup. All are eaten, in turn, a spoonful at a time interspersed with the same of rice. Kra Pao Moo is Thailand’s most common all-day, any day, snack. Supposedly what any Thai grandmother offers her visiting grandchildren on arrival. Krao Pao means basil, and it can be with minced pork [moo] or chicken [gai], stir-fried with fresh basil….and chillies! Whilst I love this dish I admit I often had to hide my quickly sweating brow, next time I will meekly ask for medium. However the Kra Pao at DD is amongst the best I have ever tasted, even though mine was laced with chillies the first time. Even the mandatory fried egg is ‘fl ash-fried’ Thai style, the white crisp and crunchy whilst the yolk is still with a soft centre. The egg sits on a serve of rice. Yum Pla Duk Foo is another very common traditional Thai dish that is rarely found in Bali. Fresh water catfish [in Indonesia, ‘Lele’] is steamed then cooled. Just before serving the pieces of fish are dropped into a very hot wok, the result is that the fish explodes! The fish on the plate now is almost crunchy and looks as if it has been minced [pictured]. As with all Thai dishes, balance is the key. The crumbly sweet fish is topped with green mango salad, slightly hot and sour, a perfect match. Again, at DD, 100%! This time with mangoes out of season papaya had been substituted, still very good. Pad Thai is probably one of Thailand’s best known dishes. It just means noodles that are cooked Thai style. Whilst normally just a vegetarian dish [egg noodles], Pad Thai Gai is with chicken added, and there is also a seafood version available here. This is probably the simplest dish in Thai cuisine, but still one of the best. Another simple dish and one that I often enjoy for a light lunch, or as an accompanying dish, is the Thai Omelette. Kai Jiew Moo Saap is minced
QUICK REVIEW pork [or chicken] beaten with egg, fish sauce and a little soy, the result a light fl uffy omelette. Pad Prik Bung Nam Man Hoy has earned itself the strange title of Morning Glory, no doubt during R&R leave for the American forces during the Korean and Vietnam wars. A stir-fried vegetarian dish with garlic, chilli and oyster sauce it was no doubt eaten for breakfast after a heavy night’s drinking, although the title in reality often refers to something else.

All of the special curries are made on different days but a telephone inquiry before coming is also advised. Penang Curry with beef on Fridays and the wonderful aromatic Massaman, from the South of Thailand, on Wednesdays. Pad Pet is a very mild but fl avoursome dish. The base of seafood, pork or chicken is cooked with basil, lime, thyme and a little chilli. Another fresh stir-fry with only a little chilli is Gai Pad King, chicken with much grated ginger, tossed with onions, mushrooms and oyster sauce. Traditional cuisines are very regional and often have varying ‘authentic’ recipes. Such was the case with their Kai Med Ma Muang [Chicken Cashew], no burnt chilli or any chilli at all but many healthy vegetables [broccoli, tomato, baby corn, onion and fungus] as well as the chicken strips and cashew nuts. Those classic Thai soups, the hot and sour Tom Yum Goong and the under-rated ambrosial Tom Kha Gai [chicken with galangal and lemongrass in coconut milk] are there, Thais do not order what we call entrees as a part of a restaurant meal. Rather they are the world’s ultimate ‘snackers’, rarely able to pass through a street food area without stopping for a minute or two to select and eat something. Such entrees here at DD are possibly the least attractive items on the menu. Perhaps they are for farangs only. The Chicken Wings are OK but hardly Thai fare, the Spring Rolls, far more Indonesian Lumpia style with their crisp but thick wonton wrapping, were for me the sole failure on the menu. But if 19 out of 20 is not good enough I do not know what is? Not only are the dishes served here at DD Warung very traditional Thai, they are also very inexpensive, most items are around Rp.60,000. For added value the serves are quite large, certainly large enough to share between 2-3 people when ordering a selection of different dishes, which after all the ultimate way to enjoy Thai cuisine. DD Thai serves great traditional Thai for the lovers of that wonderful complex cuisine.

FINE FOOD FROM BALI’S FOUR CORNERS It’s challenging enough to manage production in the island’s towns and cities; kudos to those who are bringing us outstanding food products while creating employment in remote parts of Bali. Over the past few years I’ve visited several of these off-the-beaten track producers. Cheese… The price of imported cheese is eye-watering these days, which is a serious issue for me. So I was delighted to discover Pasti Enak in Klungkung of all places, which makes and delivers excellent cheese at affordable prices around the island.
Whole, fresh, raw milk from grass-fed cows is trucked in from Java two or three times a week and pasteurised and processed at Pasti Enak. Depending on the type of cheese, between 10 and 12 litres of milk are needed to make a single kilo. I was already a big fan of their sake-washed Matahari Trappist style cheese. Recently I sampled a sensational triple cream Camembert with an apple-washed rind (to be marketed as Applebert) as well as a memorable Rahul, a subtle, firm cheese coated in coconut ash. Pasti Enak cheeses are used in the kitchens of about 30 leading restaurants and resorts in Bali, including Locavore. Visit the website at www.pastienak.com to order for home delivery. Pasti Enak cheese retails at Frestive in Canggu and Kerobokan, at Bali Pure in Ubud, at Moksa Saturday Market and at the Sanur Sunday market. Fruit Products… Probably Bali’s original professional producer of processed local fruit and nuts is Bali Asli. Richard Wendt and his wife Maya founded Bali Asli in 1989 in Papuan, one of Bali’s poorest regions, with a one-burner stove and one employee. From these modest beginnings they grew to ethically produce a wide range of excellent fruit jams/jellies/marmalades, nut butters, herb salts and chutneys; pickles and kimchi are under development. The ingredients for the products are all locally sourced and processed. Bali Asli has also developed and sells environmentally friendly soaps and cleaning products.
After starting several businesses in Bali since 2001, husband and wife team Chris Hayashi and Odit Hartati decided to focus on making artisanal cheese. Chris, who has been in the food industry for 30 years and a professional chef for 15, started making cheese by trial and error as a hobby in 2003. In 2011 Chris and Odit literally sold the farm to take a four year professional cheese-making/aging course in the United States. Returning to Klungkung, they began the huge job of renovating their production space to meet international health and hygiene standards. By 2017 Pasti Enak had earned a HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) certificate, as well as ISO 9000 and ISO 2200 conformity certification. To achieve the highest Indonesian government certification for food production, Makanan Dalam (MD), production is governed by a 1700 page manual with very strict criteria. The MD assessment team spent 12 hours at the Pasti Enak factory and immediately awarded a score of 100%, almost unprecedented in Indonesia. “As a chef, I was cooking with elements that were already dead,” Chris told me. “With natural cheese making, you’re creating life. You can make the same cheese from the same milk and culture in the morning and the evening, and they will taste different. The terroir is very complex.” Over the past year Chris, Odit and their highly trained team have created 28 kinds of soft, semi-soft and hard cheese as well as labneh (a thick sour cream cheese similar to yogurt), hand dipped ricotta and cottage cheese. About 20 of these cheeses are aged for up to 9 months in climate-controlled caves.
Bringing together traditional methods with state-of-theart equipment and hygiene standards, Pasti Enak is making some very interesting cheeses. Bali Asli is a wonderful example of how a small-scale industry can help develop local economies. It now employs 35 people, and the fair-price purchase of local, seasonal fruits supports many remote farming families who would otherwise not be able to get their produce to market. I’ve been happily supporting this little family business since I arrived here in 2000. Their marmalades and buni fruit jelly (very close in flavour to cranberry) are favourites. Bali Asli products are available at most supermarkets or through their website www bali-asli.com. Cashews… East Bali is the poorest part of the island. The government planted cashew trees in the area to control erosion about 40 years ago. About 4,500 farming families in this catchment area have cashew trees on their land, but until recently this potentially valuable crop brought them very little in the way of income. Aaron Fishman, who was volunteering in Desa Ban, East Bali, saw an opportunity to create a social venture that would bring the people livelihoods and educational opportunities. “Indonesia produces about six percent of the world’s cashews every year but until we built the factory over 90% of them were bought cheaply by agents and exported for processing to India or Vietnam.” he told me. “With local partners, we launched East Bali Cashews in 2012 with a goal of adding value to local cashews for export at source and exporting the
processed nuts internationally - minimising the middlemen, improving the farmers’ return and creating employment on the ground.” When the raw cashews arrive at the factory they are steamed in a huge drum for 15 minutes before being run through simple shelling machines. Both machines are mainly powered with the biomass of discarded cashew shells. Once shelled, the nuts are air dried in ovens also powered by biomass. The skins of the nuts are peeled by rows of women who gossip as they work. Like coffee, cashews are a very labour-intensive product. It takes five kilograms of raw cashews to produce one kilogram of ready-to-eat nuts. The company is now by far the largest employer in the area, employing abut 400 people, 90% of whom are women. As guardians of health and education within the family, women of East Bali Cashews not only earn money to invest in their children but are encouraged to develop management skills. East Bali Cashews has opened the region’s first preschool, initiated farmer training programs, and improved ecological conditions. And the products are wonderful. www.eastbalicashews.com Coffee… it took a long time for the world of coffee aficionados to discover Indonesia but these days our Arabica is being described as the single malt of the coffee world. There are several small artisanal coffee producers in Bali now. A few years ago I sipped my way around Ubud in search of the best cup of coffee. Not the foamy, milky concoctions made by machine but a simple, honest brew from a French press. From the first sip my favourite was and remains Cosmic Coffee - rich and deep, with notes of chocolate and orange. The product of a small group of farmers on the slopes of Mount Batur, Cosmic Coffee uses only the ripest red hand-selected, carefully fermented, sun-dried beans roasted 360 grams at a time in a home kitchen. This is the essence of artisanal coffee; the small team produces just 10 - 15 kg a week and it disappears fast. Available at Kue, Bali Buda, Bali Direct and Kafe, and served at Kue, Roots, Elephant and Sopa. www.cosmiccoffeebali.com.

20 WHY ONE PENSION IS NOT ENOUGH On Friday 16th March the Trump administration fired the Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe just 24 hours before he was due to take retirement with full benefits. Without entering into the rights or wrongs of the decision the fact is that by not fulfilling the complete 20 years to qualify for a full pension McCabe has lost his right to the benefit of that pension. Few people are likely to face such a bombshell on the eve of their retirement but the incident is a wake-up call for us to review other threats to pensions and to understand why we cannot rely on a single source of income in retirement. People living in their home countries have their own concerns when planning retirement. In the UK for example the state pension scheme is safe but not particularly generous. Company pensions schemes are in dire straits with the majority of them in deficit and failures are common, including some high profile ones recently such as BHS and Carillion. But there is a partial safety net in the UK in the form of a government-controlled Pensions Protection Scheme. Where expatriates are concerned however there is virtually no protection against the failure of any financial product, including pension plans. Hence the need to have more than one source of income to combat the risk of a single source failing. Let’s a take a look at the various forms of pension that people rely on and how they could fail. State schemes If you are allowed to maintain a state scheme in your home country this is usually the most secure scheme you could have although it is unlikely to cover more than your most basic needs in retirement. And if you are British you need to keep in mind that once you take the pension it will be frozen at the same rate so long as you remain resident in Indonesia. There is a local group in Bali actively supporting a campaign to change this but it is an uphill battle. Company pension schemes If you are working in Bali your employer is unlikely to be funding a pension plan for you unless you work for one of the large hotel chains. You may however have a personal pension or two secured in your home country and related to former employment. The risk here is that they could fail if they relate to final salary, a formula doomed to failure due to changing demographics and years of low interest rates. As a result, companies like British Airways are burdened with massive pension obligations which also affect their bottom lines. New pension freedoms may make it possible to transfer to a private scheme but you could be faced with an immediate tax bill and need to take great care as to where the pension is moved. Annuities Annuities purchased from a respectable insurance company are basically safe. But they also require a large up-front payment if they are to produce a meaningful pension. To guarantee the pension insurance companies have to rely on long-duration bond purchases and at this point in time bond rates are very low. Also, the purchasing power of the pension will fall each year. If you live to 100 it is will be practically worthless. Furthermore, the annuity will die with you or your spouse, leaving nothing for your estate. Private pensions A pension plan taken out with an offshore company does not have the constraints of a state or company pension. In fact the market would shun such a constrained product as people like to spend their pension pots as they please. A typical pension would take the form of a regular savings plan over a period of 10 to 25 years. An income can then be drawn from it at regular intervals. Potential pitfalls include market volatility, poor fund selection and a temptation to draw down too quickly. Also, failure to maintain the contract or early surrender can lead to heavy losses. Having said
that, a regular savings plan, adhered to with self-discipline and invested carefully with regular reviews, is still one of the most effective ways to save for retirement. Lump sum portfolio For someone fortunate to be able to put a significant lump sum aside a simple way to plan for an income for life is to place it in a portfolio bond or similar product. The portfolio should be carefully constructed with a balanced mixture of funds in stocks, bonds, commodities, liquid alternatives and cash. Global stocks should form the bulk of the portfolio as they will provide growth. But there will also be volatility, hence the need for a holding of bonds and cash. Withdrawals would be taken from the cash portion. A portfolio valued at $500,000 would provide an annual income of $25,000 based on an annual withdrawal of 5%. Actual returns will vary considerably but they should not affect the 5% withdrawal. If the portfolio can make an average gain of at least 5% per annum after charges then the capital should remain intact indefinitely. But don’t count on it. A prolonged recession could force a reduction in the withdrawal amount or a shrinking of the capital.

Another consideration affecting portfolio bonds is that of high charges. Cheaper alternatives now available consist of ‘mini-bonds’ restricted to a menu of 200-300 funds or non-life company ‘platforms’ which perform the same functions as portfolio bonds but with lower charges. If you are locked into a high-charging product it may be possible to switch to one of the cheaper ones. C/Bm/I-20 Dec 17
Property portfolio Some people have successfully built up property portfolios over the years and treat the income from the properties as a pension. Income may be erratic though and monitoring the properties together with legal and tax issues may be difficult in advancing years. If any loans are outstanding these could become problematic when interest rates rise. Property is usually a good long term investment but it may not be the most practical if income is the priority.

If You Have a Problem with.....
Running a successful business Many expats in Bali are successful entrepreneurs. Some will have put all their capital into their business in addition to their efforts. If the income from the venture is a good one it could indeed provide for retirement. But this might require a continued hands-on approach which may or may not be practical in later years. Running a business can bring great rewards but there are always risks and nothing can be taken for granted. It would be wise to ensure some of your profits are diverted to a separate investment which may well benefit from a Trust arrangement to protect you from creditors should the business fail.
SURABAYA : (62 31) 854 0567 (hunting)
www.etsa-indonesia.com
To sum up: As we have seen, each type of pension has its attractions but also drawbacks and uncertainties so should not be relied upon on its own to provide for retirement. If you could build up your wealth via three or four of the options you should be in good shape to provide for the challenges that face old age. Finally, don’t upset your boss just days before you qualify for a retirement pension! At least Mr. McCabe at 50 has a bit of time to start rebuilding a pension if he can find a new job.

Kulture Kid!
By Vaughan Hatch
Bali – Traditions Not Standing Still Like other cultures and traditions across the world, Balinese culture is by no means immune to change. In the West, we only have to look at a tradition / belief as massive as Christmas, which is not only quite possibly on the wrong date for someone who may not have even historically existed, but also has become morphed with pine trees, a guy in a red suit from the North Pole, BBQs, hedonism, mass consumerism and big sales. Many outsiders like to (read: “would like to”) see Bali as remaining in a kind of time-warp that they consider an ideal point in time and development (normally sometime around the 1970s when there was no plastic, traffic or pollution and an abundance of magic mushrooms and nude sunbathing!) that is within living memory and is distorted by memory lapse. The reality is that everything changes – I’m not just talking about infrastructure and the environment, but also for culture and cultural beliefs. One has to remember that Bali has not always even had the same religious beliefs. In fact, little is known about Gilimanuk Man (according to the cultural department dating to circa 600 B.C.) and his cultural traditions; however, if other prehistoric hunting and gathering/agricultural communities are anything to go by, it’s highly likely that his society was animistic. This is even true of much later arrivals such as Bali Aga, where even today community beliefs merge animism with fertility rites and their own brand of Hindu beliefs.
C/Bm/I-11 Oct 17
Interestingly enough, based on archaeological evidence, it in fact seems that Buddhism reached Bali earlier than the other major religions, and notably the earliest Balinese kingdoms were Buddhist not Hindu. It wasn’t until much later that Bali adopted more Hindu beliefs, and not until 1945 that the religion that most Balinese adhered to was labeled “Hinduism” in order to be accepted as a recognized organized religion in Indonesia. Today Balinese religion and culture is also constantly “on the move”. I constantly hear of different sects gathering new followers, including the more common ones such as Sai Baba and Hare Krishna, and their ideas and beliefs are in some sense becoming more prevalent, bordering on mainstream. My point is that Bali doesn’t remain in a kind of time-warp, and it will never, even if many of us would like it to. In my next article, I’ll discuss what specific aspects of tradition have changed and why.

25 LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE You may have noticed on some spa menus Lymphatic Drainage massage and wondered what it is. To be honest, there’s not many spas that actually offer this very important treatment for your health. This very gentle massage helps to remove toxins from the body through the lymphatic system. I’m sure you know by now how important it is to get those nasty toxins out of your body as soon as possible to prevent health problems. What is the lymphatic drainage system?
There are hundreds of lymph nodes in the human body located deep inside t h e b o d y, such as around the lungs and heart, or closer to the surface, like under the arm or groin. T h e lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials.
The lymphocytes produce antibodies to kill the foreign microorganisms and stop infections from spreading. Humans can live without a spleen, although people who have lost their spleen to disease or injury are more prone to infections. The main functions of the spleen are: 1. To produce immune cells to fight antigens 2. To remove particulate matter and aged blood cells, mainly erythrocytes 3. To produce blood cells during fetal life Lymph Nodes Lymph nodes are gathered in clusters in the neck, under the chin, in the armpits and in the groin. The lymph nodes will swell and become tender when infection is in the body allowing time for the T-cells to multiply to fight the infection. I’m sure you’ve all experienced having swollen tonsils (if you still have them) at the onset of perhaps the flu or an infection. Lymph nodes are responsible for filtering lymph and providing part of the adaptive immune response to new pathogens. Key points about the lymphatic system. • The lymphatic system has three main roles: it is part of our immune system, maintains fluid balance and is essential for the absorption of fats and fat-soluble nutrients. Procrastination is our favorite form of self-sabotage The experts at Psychology Today define self-sabotage as a self-defeating action that gets in the way of your intent. Most often it takes the form of procrastination. If you’re saying to yourself you’ll do such and such right after you complete something else that is way less important but inherently more interesting, you are procrastinating and setting yourself up for self-sabotage. Human nature is a dichotomy, a contradiction in terms. We want something yet we resist getting it. It’s like shooting yourself in the foot. In fact, we can be our own worst enemy. How does it manifest itself? If any of the following scenarios sound familiar, you have experienced the pattern of self-sabotage: • You have set yourself a goal and are eagerly working towards it. Then of a sudden, you grind to a halt for no apparent reason. You procrastinate, you find excuses not to continue, focusing on things that, in your opinion, are more important. It’s not because of lack of skill, ability or desire. You know you really want and can achieve that goal but your motivation is gone. You just can’t continue on your path. • You have a great project in mind. You’re dreaming or talking about it constantly yet you never start it, even though you have time, the ability, the desire, etc. • You are tasked with a project and you know you can do it. You use your confidence as an excuse to slack off. The project is never done or you miss the deadline. • You’re a perfectionist to the point you feel you have to wait till the time or situation is right or your soul mate waltzes into your life. • Your deep-rooted cultural beliefs or an impaired value

system keeps you from progressing. You may be fearful of making money because you believe money is the root of all evil. Self-doubt: You worry that you are not competent, good enough or smart enough to achieve your goal or you let yourself get strangled by the opinions of others. You feel undeserving of success or happiness that may come your way. Negative self-talk (I can’t do that, it’s too difficult, too heavy, if I try I will probably fail, etc.) sets you on a path to destroy your self-confidence. These negative messages erode your self-confidence and self-esteem and you keep proving to yourself that you can’t or shouldn’t do the things you want. Fear of failure, fear of taking a risk, fear of success, fear of the unknown, fear of getting hurt, getting rejected. These fears are all barriers to success and accomplishment. You are a recovering alcoholic/former smoker/ overeater. Some stress in your life rekindles your desire to drink/ smoke/eat. You reach for that drink/cigarette/pizza slice even though you fully know it will set you on a downward slope. You get panic attacks when things are cruising just fine and you’re well on your way to achieve success. Or you get depressed thinking about all the things that could gowrong. Bingo! Time to retrace and retract. You endanger or destroy perfectly good or promising relationships due to anger issues, irrational suspicions or jealousy. Sometimes you enjoy being the victim or scapegoat and attract all the blame to yourself to justify the feeling. You incite drama, pick a fight or push someone else’s buttons to get a reaction that justifies you as the victim or the bad guy. You need the high of the adrenaline rush and this addiction controls your actions even if they harm or put you in danger’s way.
Why do I do this to myself? If you ever asked yourself that question you’re making the first tentative step to recovery.
C/HE/I-8 Nov 17
By analysing the underlying causes of doing what you do or fail to do, that stand in the way of the things you want, you are starting to realise that self-sabotage is coming from your mindset, your belief system. If you consistently fail to reach your goals or know you are consistently procrastinating, if your motivation is flagging, put yourself under the loop and commit yourself to breaking the cycle of self-sabotage. How to get out of that pattern. Recognise and challenge your self-sabotaging behaviour. Analyse why you do the things you do. Are your actions based on rational thoughts or clear facts? Are previous experiences keeping you from achieving the things you want? What do you get out of repeatedly putting yourself in this emotional pain? Analyse your belief system and counter it with logical arguments. For instance, if you secretly think that money is the source of all evil, tell yourself that money is simply a tool and that the person making money has control of how that money is to be used: for good or evil depending on your own character. Revamp your thinking, especially your negative mindset. Mistakes or failures should be seen as valuable experiences and stepping stones to success and not something that is bound to be perpetual. Believe in yourself and your ability to do it. Rely on your knowledge, ability and skills to push you forward, instead of your self-doubts and lack of confidence. If your goal is too daunting, break it down in manageable steps. Self-sabotage can come about because you are too focused on the ultimate goal, which feels overwhelming. Instead, you need to focus on just the next step that will move you towards your goal. Practice the art of eating the elephant one bite at a time. You could also create a mantra for yourself that will inspire you to stick with your goal. Just do it! Recognise that it is essential to break that pattern of selfsabotage if you want to succeed in your goals. Recognise that any situation in your life is one you created for yourself or one you choose to be in or stay in. You can also choose to change it! Success means growth and change. You need to be comfortable with that idea. Get used to the wild rides; it’s part of life.
