MONEY MATTERS Pandora’s Box Has Been Opened It happened much later than one would have expected but two cases of the coronavirus in Jakarta were finally confirmed on 2nd March. The public reaction was predictable; within hours, videos were circulating on social media of crowds panic-buying in supermarkets and of empty shelves. The next day I had to line up as I entered my office at the World Trade Centre to have my temperature checked. I am not sure what would have happened if it was above normal. Maybe sent home or whisked away to some secure location? The fact is, having watched for weeks the impact of the virus on more than 50 other countries, we know for sure that it is now officially on our doorstep. At least in Jakarta, and there is little doubt it will raise its head soon in other parts of Indonesia, including Bali.

pressure on the budget, the outcome can be devastating for the individual or the family if no protection is in place. Whole life or level term insurance policies can be expensive but it is possible to take out cover for just a year at a time. This is relatively inexpensive but could provide cover through a period of uncertainty and until business returns to normal. A decision as to whether to renew can be taken on an annual basis, keeping in mind that the premium would increase annually with age. Here is a scary statistic from a Zurich Life report on claims in the Middle East from 2017 to 2019. The average age of a claimant for critical illness cover was 49 while the average age for a death claim was 51. Heart attacks and strokes were the leading causes of death, representing 39% of claims.

Of course Bali, even without having its own cases, has already been impacted. Anyone who is involved in the tourist and travel or related industries is now severely challenged.

Stock markets have tumbled, yet there have been occasional positive days. Volatility has certainly been extreme; the main Dow index in the US has seen both record falls and record rallies in single days, all in the space of a week. But overall it seems we are left with a loss across the board in the region of 10%. Holders of money funds, bonds, balanced funds, gold and other asset classes I suggested would have fared better. The big question now is whether you should take further defensive measures to protect your portfolio, should you just hold your position or take advantage of lower market prices to add to your investments? The dilemma is one frequently facing investors: if you buy today you get a 10% discount. But if you wait a week it could be a 20% discount - or the discount could disappear altogether! I have to say that most investors in this situation tend to hold. The worst thing to do is to sell; by so doing you are locking in losses. The most astute investor in the world, Warren Buffett, summed up the situation recently on CNBC with the following words of wisdom: ‘’Now Coronavirus is front and centre but something else will be front and centre in six months, or a year from now or two years from now. The real question is where are these businesses (stocks) going to be in 5, 10, 20 years’ time.’’

So much for the problem, but what are the solutions? Seasoned hospitality professionals will be no strangers to business disruptions and disasters. They will already have contingency plans such as discounts, special offers, maintenance and improvement projects, temporary staff layoffs where inevitable and so on. Those who have followed good financial planning principles will also have ample cash reserves to cover such contingencies and will also have avoided the temptation to have all their eggs in a single business basket. They will have investments and pensions that are tailored for the long term but which are nevertheless sufficiently liquid to call upon in an emergency. What you don’t need now is a second disaster that could really make life difficult for yourself and/or others. And that would be a medical crisis or worse. Most expatriates have some form of international medical insurance. Due to the rising cost with age some older ones resort to cover by the local BJPS, which while far from perfect does provide some benefits and a degree of comfort. Life and critical illness cover, however, is often overlooked. Note that the latter is unlikely to cover the coronavirus, although medical insurance certainly would unless a pandemic becomes so burdensome to the insurers that they are forced to exclude it! Unlikely however, as the virus usually results in a limited number of days in hospital and does not incur the scale of costs of cancer treatment for example. Situations like the present are invariably stressful. This in turn increases the possibility of falling ill or in extreme cases, death. So while a downturn in business can put

What about personal investments? Two months ago there was a real possibility of a major conflagration in the Middle East as tensions grew between the US and Iran. I suggested what effect this might have globally, namely disruption to the travel and tourist industry and stock market volatility. I also suggested money would flee to ‘save haven’ currencies while emerging market currencies, which include the Rupiah, would suffer. All these consequences have indeed materialised, but ironically not because of a Middle East crisis but due to a new global enemy, the coronavirus, or Covid19 as it has now been named. Only one prediction failed to materialise, namely the cost of oil and energy. This was expected to balloon in the event of disruption to global supplies. Instead, the global economic slowdown resulting from the coronavirus has caused a fall in oil prices.

It is interesting to note that despite Warren Buffett’s conviction that people should remain solidly invested, his company Berkshire Hathaway is currently sitting on US$128 billion in cash. That is roughly the size of Indonesia’s entire foreign reserves. The reason undoubtedly is that he is patiently looking for companies to buy that represent good value. You may think it worth waiting to see what he invests in and then follow him. Almost certainly you will be too late; the mere fact of a Buffett purchase is likely to push up the price. If you can’t beat him, join him This could be the solution and you will then continue to benefit from the long term growth that has been the hallmark of his investments. Just one snag; the price of a single share in Berkshire Hathaway at the time of writing is US$313,914. Any takers? Just let me know how many shares you want and I will send you the transfer details. Or perhaps wait a few days to see if the price drops a little and in the meantime stop dreaming and come back to face the immediate reality of how best to cope with the present coronavirus scare and make sure you come through it in good shape to focus again on the long term.

R O TA R Y NEWS Rotary Connects The World

clubs. While our activities and programs are somewhat separate, we are all part of a single and effective Rotary community, and it is indeed the case that Rotary connects the world! All clubs have strong connections with international Rotary Clubs, and the constant flow of visitors through Bali includes many Rotarians who like to visit Bali Rotary Clubs, and “exchange banners” in the customary way of creating a connection. These connections often provide opportunities to attract international Rotary Clubs and Districts to support local Bali initiatives, and if sufficient funds are available, it is possible to leverage these into a Global Grant.

This equipment was delivered to Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI – Red Cross Indonesia) in October 2019. Joining the formal Handover Ceremony was a party of 25 Rotarians from several Rotary clubs on Hawaii, visiting Bali to celebrate the culmination of the program they helped initiate. As well as forming friendships and taking in the delights of Bali, the visitors engaged with a number of Yayasan who are active in providing assistance to disadvantaged groups in the local community: the Kolewa Foundation, who support the RC Bali Nusa Dua’s Cleft Lip and Palate Program and provide services to deaf children; Yayasan Puspadi Bali who make prosthetic limbs for young people; and Jodie O’Shea house, an orphanage and welfare centre for children. Cleft Lip and Palate Program

“Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” Rotary’s Board of Directors and Trustees, June 2018. Like most social organisations, Rotary International (RI) has a Mission statement – “Service above Self” – which defines the vision of the organization and helps focus and direct the activities of its more than 35,000 clubs and 1.2 million members worldwide as they work together on a wide range of social and environmental programs as well as charitable activities at global, national and local community levels. To reflect this diversity and help maintain its focus, each year the incoming RI President introduces a new “theme” to draw attention to and celebrate a particular aspect or attribute of Rotary. The Presidential theme for this Rotary Year (2019 – 2020) is ”Rotary Connects the World”, and the activities of RC Bali Nusa Dua during this year fully reflect the accuracy of this theme.

A Global Grant can be provided by The Rotary Foundation (TRF) for major projects (in excess of US$30,000) which satisfy fairly strict criteria of focus and sustainability. The advantage of gaining a Global Grant is that the funds are leveraged by additional grant funds from the TRF – cash donations by individuals or Rotary Clubs are matched by 50%, whereas donations by Districts are matched by 100%.

What has become the signature program for RC Bali Nusa Dua is the Cleft Lip and Palate program, which provides cranio-facial surgery and dental care for children and young people suffering from this disfiguring affliction. This has been running for now 25 years, and has brought huge benefits to over 1800 young people in Bali and Eastern Indonesia. This has been supported in recent years by two major Global Grants, involving 10 Rotary Clubs and Districts from The Netherlands, Germany, Canada and the USA, and further Grants are under preparation for a July 2020 start – and a 25-year celebration of engagement!

Rotary Continues to Connect the World Twenty years ago Rotary clubs in Bali brought together Rotarians from around the world to fund and build the ‘Bali Blood Bank’. To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this achievement RCBND again reached out to Rotarians around the world (Hawaii, Pennsylvania and Michigan in the USA, and Luxembourg) and raised more than US$160,000 for the purchase of mobile blood collection equipment. The equipment will be transported in two vehicles provided by separate Rotary Global Grants organised by RC Bali Taman and RC Bali Kuta who were supported by Rotarians in Japan and Korea. This improved service will bring mobile collection procedures into compliance with recentlyimproved Government standards, and will help ensure that the Bali community receives blood products of the highest standards in Indonesia.

In Bali there are three primarily English-speaking Rotary Clubs and fourteen or so primarily-Indonesian speaking

In keeping with the theme “Rotary connects the World”, 23 Rotary Clubs and Districts from 9 countries and 3 continents will provide support for the enlarged new programs which will cost nearly US$300,000 and provide new lives for some 260 young people. This will include additional specialist training for 2 Indonesian plastic surgeons at the renowned Chang Gung Craniofacial Center in Taipei. Support and Engage with your local Rotary! Bali Rotary clubs have achieved a great deal, but of course with more people to provide support, the more we can achieve together. If you have any interest at all in learning more about or becoming involved in Rotary, please contact a Rotary Club near you, or the Contributor to this article at president@rotarybali.org.

Update Ari Bar is Mexican but different from the rest. Not Tex-Mex

or Cal-Mex but innovative Mexican. Some standard items are on the menu but most are creations using traditional Mexican flavours and cooking methods combined with a new range of ingredients. An example is the Open Taco, layered with crispy shredded pork in alpastor sauce with jalapeno peppers, lettuce, pineapple salsa and cream cheese [pictured]. Other Tacos, which can be soft open flat or crisp, are Dory [coriander mustard, tomato salsa, lettuce and cream cheese], Chicken [with beetroot, avocado salsa, cabbage slaw and cream cheese] or Beef [with rosemary chipotle, lettuce, coriander corn salsa and cream cheese]. Interesting starters include a Mixed Tostaditas Platter of shrimp, dory, pork and lamb on a guacamole tostadita with spicy cream chipotle sauce and honey lime dressing. There are Burritos, Enchiladas, Fajitas and Quesadillas, all with a modern twist. Ari Bar is on Jln. Kartika, in front of the Bali Garden Hotel, and you can use their parking.

Hongalia is a classy Chinese noodle house. It is found

next to the main entrance to Arma Museum, Jln. Jatayu, Pengosekan, Ubud. They actually make their own noodles, something that is normally only done in high quality Chinese restaurants, On offer is both Kwetiau [rice noodles] and Bakmie [wheat noodles], their Noodle curry dishes are a

specialty and can be had with beef, shrimp, tofu, chicken or pork ribs, all of which have cabbage and potato added in coconut milk. They also offer a range of dim sum as well as the Japanese gyoza. The popular Bakmie Chicken Mix Chasio Special combines chasio [pork] with chicken, dumplings and vegetables in a broth. The main drinks are a range of hot and cold teas; lemon, ginger, lemongrass, green, lychee, and apple. Open from early morning, every day, for breakfast.

Genius Café is found on Mertasan Beach, Sanur. It is

open from 7.00 a.m. for breakfast but strangely that is not served after 12.00. Breakfast includes a number of their own creations such as Potato Hash, hash browns, avocado, poached egg, lettuce, tomatoes and sunflower seeds. There are also a Chia Seed Breakfast and the Green Machine Fritters and egg and pancake dishes. For the rest of the day there are many healthy options; Baba Ganoush, Vegan Tacos and a Beetroot Dip. Soups and Bowls, There are Burgers and even a small range of Mexican Pizzas and Raw Desserts.

Queens of India in Tandjung Benoa, brought quality

Indian cuisine to the Nusa Dua area. The Queens Tandoor Group already had their flagship, Queens Tandoor, in Seminyak and the first Queens of India in front of The Dynasty Hotel in Kartika Plaza. Queens Tandjung Benoa is the first of the group to get a design and menu upgrade, the others are following. The lunch and dinner menu features a wide selection of Koyle ka Kamaal (dishes hot from the Tandoor), together with Murg (chicken specialties), Ghosht (lamb), Samudaree Khazana (fish and prawn), and Bageeche se (from the vegetable garden). Specifically at Queen’s of India, Tanjung Benoa, they also offer a selection of Mumbai Chaat – savoury Indian snacks typically served as street food including Sev Puri, Bhel Puri, Pani Puri and Dahi Puri. Puri is unleavened bread that is deep fried until it puffs up like a round ball, which is golden-brown in colour. Another specialty is the hot vegetarian South Indian cuisine, where rice is combined with lentils and dhal, curried vegetables and pachadi (yogurt) to produce Masala Dosa, Sambhar and Uttapam, all of which are not only healthy but easy on the digestion due to the fermentation process.

The Plumbers Arms is Bali’s first traditional English Pub! From the same management that gave us The Beach Club at Echo Beach, it is an instant success. Wood-lined in the best English tradition, there is even a covered beer garden out the back [preparing for the new smoking rules in Bali]. Located in Anyar on the road that connects Kerobokan with Canggu, it replaced the Fish & Chips shop, Wrap a Snapper, that was there before although Fish & Chips are still their best seller! Good finger-food bar grub includes the usual things; nachos, quesadillas, spring rolls, deep-fried prawns or just a bowl of fresh hot chips. Very popular is their All Day Breakfast of sausage, bacon, fried egg, baked beans, tomato and toast but The Plumbers Arms credentials as a true English Pub are proven with its Ploughman’s Lunch, a feature of just about every real Pub in England; Cheddar cheese, blue cheese, ham, cucumber, tomatoes, onion, pickles and crusty bread PLUS that all important Branston Pickle on the side! Gypsy is found on jln. Munduk Catu, Canggu and is the

home of Canadian Chef Robin Filteau-Boucher. Open all day, breakfast can be toast many ways [French, avocado, eggplant or eggs], or eggs the usual way with roasted potatoes or Hash Browns actually made on site. Or you can have Smoothie Bowls of goodness. Later dining can commence with a cold Green Pea soup made with coconut water, followed by Tuna Tacos or Tuna Tartare wrapped in rice sushi-style. Something different? A crispy Bacon Roll or a Slopy jack, pulled jackfruit tossed with BBQ sauce, coleslaw, avocado and cashews. There is also a Kids Menu with small serves. Refreshingly different! BaliEats has been re-invented. The popular web site since 2000 [www.balieats.com] had been re-invented. The restaurant scene in Bali these days changes almost daily. Now BaliEats highlights today’s news, all still archived by location and cuisine.

Naked packaging making headway in Bali The multi-trillion dollar hair and skincare industry is one of the biggest producers of throwaway packaging. In Indonesia and other Asian countries single use packaging is very popular but adds enormously to the landfills and the garbage thrown carelessly away by roadsides or rivers. While a few tentative steps are undertaken in Indonesia to stem the tide of plastic bags and throwaway packaging, it is obvious that we have a long way to go to change consumer behaviours in terms of waste management. There are those who say that it should not be entirely the responsibility of the consumer to manage the manufacturer’s packaging. One of the tenets of the Zero Waste movement is that manufacturers should bear that obligation and come up with packaging that are non-polluting, i.e. compostable or recyclable. Some manufacturers are taking this idea seriously. A good local example is Leaf Juice Skincare, a spa products manufacturer based in Batam who recently opened a showroom store in the Sayan-Ubud area. They are underpinning the Zero Waste movement by creating non-polluting packaging for their all-natural ingredients skin care line by using naked, refillable, reusable, compostable or dissolvable containers. What’s more, their product line uses natural and vegan ingredients, the bounty of Mother Nature, the favourite being the Hibiscus plant.

that liberating the paste from the tube is genial. Chew paste comes in the form of little pellets in a tin jar. Each time you want to brush your teeth, simply pop one pellet into your mouth to chew and start brushing. No more squeezing that ungainly tube to get the last smidgen of toothpaste. Comes in delectable flavours too. This what you get when you combine Swiss precision work and ethics with American style ingenuity. How it all came about is an interesting story in itself. Leaf juice Skincare is the creation of Jasmine Borschberg, a medical lab technologist by profession. Swiss by origin, Jasmine’s parents immigrated to Canada and later moved to America where Jasmine obtained her education and worked as an entrepreneur in many successful businesses that are still running today. Eventually the wind blew in the direction of Asia and Jasmine found herself setting up house there where her brother is a professor at the University Of Singapore. When the 2008 financial crisis hit, she went back to work and opened a lovely Balinese style villa into the now well-know #1 Tempat Senang Spa Resort on Batam Island.

Naked packaging means that the product is sold in a solid form after water has been removed during the manufacturing process. Shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, toothpaste, cold cream, soaps and scrubs come in the form of bars and not in bottles or tubes. The bars themselves can be wrapped in clear, water-soluble plastic or put in refillable containers. Other products come in eco-friendly, compostable packaging, refillable or reusable containers. Reusable jars, bottles and tins are made from glass, aluminium or PLA (polyactic acid), a plant based substance that is biodegradable. However, the PLA jars can also be refilled and reused repeatedly. Though PLA containers look like plastic, they are actually made from corn. More and more manufacturers are using PLA packaging and though it is not a total panacea, this type of packaging, when discarded, is definitely kinder to the environment than normal petroleum-based plastics. From a money saving perspective bars are very economical. A shampoo bar for instance is the equivalent of three 500 ml bottles of liquid shampoo. If you figure it out, the peruse savings are considerable. That also means that one long-lasting shampoo bar is the equivalent of three plastic bottles that won’t be thrown in a landfill or end up in Bali’s waterways. Another interesting form of packaging is the use of chew paste instead of a tube for toothpaste. Just think of the billions of toothpaste tubes that are thrown away each year and take hundreds of years to decompose and you’ll agree

Over time these chemicals build up in your body and create havoc with your immune systems. By contrast the ingredients used in the Leaf Juice products are natural, body-friendly and chemical-free. By using plant extracts and hydrosols from materials such as leaves, flowers, peels, berries, wood, stems and roots, Leaf Juice products pay homage to mother nature and respect the environment. They are also kinder to the body. Shampoos are sulfate-free to avoid thinning hair, the zinc-based reeffriendly sunblock contains none of the ten chemicals usually found in marketed sunscreens that are banned in certain areas because they are bad for reefs. Aluminiumfree deodorants won’t threaten or disrupt hormone cycles. Eco-friendly detergents and cleaning products will help reduce pollution in the environment. Face scrubs contain vegetable, rather than plastic beads. None of the products contain palm oil and none of the product ingredients are tested on animals. The products and their eco-friendly, attractive and innovative packaging make for great gifts. People like to be pampered so give your friends and family a gift that screams natural goodness and non-wasteful packaging. With more than 175 products to choose from there is bound to be a fitting gift for everyone on your list. The Leaf Juice Skincare shop is located in the middle of the Sayan-Ubud neighborhood between Moksa and The Mansion. You can get an idea of the product line and the underlying philosophy by visiting the website https://www. leaf-juice.com/

For the spa she formulated her own line of natural products which customers were then requesting to take home. In order to fully control the quality of the natural ingredients she set up her own BPom certified class A laboratory to manufacture the products and opened a retail outlet. The link to Bali came early on as Jasmine liked to escape for frequent breaks and leased a villa in Sayan where she launched the Sayan store in January this year. It was a logical extension of her laboratorium in Batam. All natural ingredients. The cosmetics, hair and skin care industry is heavily reliant on the use of chemicals like sulphates, parabens and phthalates in their products which are not kind to your skin or body. Often these components strip away the natural oils from your body, make your hair fall out, act as hormone disruptors or are known carcinogens.

Zero waste is a journey, not a destination, say the Zero Waste pundits and the Leaf Juice efforts really put us squarely on that journey. Jasmine’s philosophy is that it is simply a matter of re-educating consumers, steering them away from harmful chemical-laden products towards natural products, and to start thinking differently about all that wasteful packaging. When all the enhancers and fillers are removed from the products texture and skin may feel different but this is an adjustment that is well worth it. In developing a natural product line Jasmine is like a medieval herbalist mixing lotions and potions from natural components, concocting soothing and healing balms and cleansers for your skin. As a woke consumer, by refusing to put harmful chemicals and ingredients on your body and treating it instead to the natural goodness of Mother Nature’s bounty, you are also treating the environment with the respect due to the planet that sustains us. We only have one body and we only have one planet. It behoves us to make that our mantra.

BOOMER CORNER Listen to your body talk As we grow in years and experience we also become increasingly aware of the body we live in, its many quirks and tendencies, its propensity to certain reactions, urges, moods and whims, its aversion to certain conditions or experiences. In other words we become aware of our body as an entity with its own ‘personality’, traits and notions. And we learn how to listen to the messages and interpret the signals it communicates to us. Our bodies talk to us through physical and sensory signals. We feel it when something is off, when our health is not as it usually is, when our energy flags, when we experience discomfort, pain, unhappiness, moodiness. Some of us become acutely aware of those ‘off’ signals and very savvy on how to decode them. Others are not so in tune or just refuse to accept the body’s hints as significant, either through misplaced feelings of ‘gotta be tough and not a ninny’ or simple distrust of their ability to understand the body’s message. So they deliberately program themselves to ignore those important symptoms and go against the grain of the body’s natural and innate warning system. Not surprising that in so doing, people lose the ability to listen and interpret their body’s messages. But you do that at a price. Suppression of your body’s hints and warnings can lead to more discomfort and possible endangerment. Ignoring those signals may lead to a worse condition. On the other hand, if you are over-listening and misinterpreting, you can set yourself up on the road to hypochondria. By definition hypochondria is an abnormal anxiety about the state of one’s health or an unwarranted fear that one has a serious disease or medical condition. Hypochondria is often characterized by fears that minor bodily or mental symptoms may indicate a serious illness or medical condition. It expresses itself through a preoccupation with one’s body, constant selfexamination and attempts at self-diagnosis. Hypochondria is like a self-fulfilling prophesy because overwhelming health anxiety can actually create symptoms like stomach aches, dizziness, chest pain or other discomforts. The cause of hypochondria is not well researched, but certain factors may increase the risk of developing it. Factors such as major life stresses, a history of childhood abuse or neglect, or any number of dysfunctional events or circumstances we experienced growing up. As we age every little thing wrong with us can bring on thoughts of a worst case scenario. Yes, we ultimately have

to die of something but don’t go looking to every little twinge or burp as the beginning of the end, or the onset of a serious illness or problem. It may not even be real symptoms in our own bodies that set us on the path to becoming a hypochondriac. At a certain age we see our contemporaries dying or taken down by dreadful and fatal diseases. That drives up our own anxiety a notch or two. Especially now, when we are being bombarded with daily news about the pandemic Covid-19 virus that has been insidiously charging through the world and seems to claim more victims every day and in yet another country or part of the world. Yes, it is something to be mildly concerned about and follow up on but it should not create a panic to the point you are isolating yourself from the world for fear of contagion.

It is situations like this that play into the hands of hypochondria. Don’t fall for it. Flu like symptoms or a dry cough does not automatically indicate you caught that dreaded virus. Ask yourself what are the chances? Evaluate your position, arm yourself with reliable information about the virus and the ways to prevent it, but don’t go panicking because a few cases have been reported in Indonesia. How not to become a hypochondriac in your old age. Keep level headed and balanced. Not just for this Corona scare but for all the other stuff you think your body is throwing at you. After all, when you were 25 you did not automatically think of grave diseases and death when you felt unwell. Our mindset should not play tricks on us just because we’re older. At age 25, when you forget where you put your car keys, you think you have a moment of scatter-

brain; you do not think this is a first symptom of Alzheimer’s.

When you break a bone at 25, you may think it is because you were clumsy or rash, not because your bones are old and brittle. When we were 25 and dizzy we blamed it on a hangover or too little sleep, now we seem to think dizziness is a symptom of something ominously wrong. And a persistent headache does not necessarily develop into a brain tumour. The point I’m trying to make is that, when we feel unwell, we should not automatically think something is seriously wrong with our health. That serves no purpose and selfdiagnosis can become a slippery path. When young, we took our lumps, bumps and twinges without much of a second thought. We should do the same at an advanced age. It’s ok to Google symptoms but be aware that there is a lot of twattle on the internet that can potentially cause health anxiety and set you firmly on the path to becoming a certifiable hypochondriac. Google just about any symptom and you will surely see results that point to major health problems or connect the symptom with a form of cancer. These extreme conclusions can cause serious anxiety, especially for people who already have a propensity for worry and resort to obsessive googling of perceived symptoms. Trust your intuition and your hunches and don’t get overwhelmed by the information overload and regurgitations on the internet, or panic when you read all the detailed contraindications on the chits that are enclosed with your medicine. If you are unwell and experience symptoms, ask your body first what it could mean, and really listen. Many times our lack of energy is due to lack of sleep or stress, not a beginning of cancer. As a last resort, you can always get a second opinion by chatting up your personal physician.

Beauty & Health Happy Feet We depend on our feet to support our weight, no matter how many kilos we are. We rely on our feet to carry us places by walking, jogging, running and dancing. Without feet our lives would be difficult. It makes sense to take good care of these very important parts of our wonderful bodies.

Reflexology induces a state of deep relaxation and since it is estimated that about 75% of disease is stress related this is a major contribution to the return of health. It also stimulates the freer flow of blood and lymph to cells and tissues. Good circulation is of upmost importance in nourishing cells and eliminating waste from the body. There are literally thousands of foot massage or reflexology places around Bali. Usually you’ll see a row of comfy chairs just inside the shop door. Many of them offer good treatments, with primarily men performing the massage because they have stronger hands. I was drawn back to my favourite reflexology place called Chill, which has been around for about 20 years. The concept hasn’t changed and the décor is much the same, a stylish spacious room with ten beds separated by sheer curtains. The room is cool in a soothing way. The therapists have been working there for many years with tremendous experience.

Most people neglect their feet, ignoring the nails and skin on the bottom of the feet. One excellent way to care for our feet is with reflexology. Reflexology is a natural, holistic therapy based on the discovery that there are points on the feet and hands which correspond to organs, systems and structures within the entire body. This corresponding relationship is called a “reflex”. A reflex is when a stimulation at one point brings about a response in another point or area. In reflexology, by using special pressure techniques to stimulate the points on the feet and hands imbalances in the tissues, organs and systems of the body can be both detected and effectively treated to restore balance and well-being.

After checking in at reception and choosing a ninety minute The Holistic Chill treatment I put my belongings in a locker and had a seat behind the foot washing station. I was offered a cup of either cold or hot lemon tea. My therapist greeted me and knelt down to gently wash my feet and then dry them. Then he placed slippers on my feet and escorted me inside the treatment room. Chill’s set up is different from other foot massage places, the beds are flat or they can be adjusted for you to sit up for sixty minute treatments.

Reflexology does not diagnose diseases nor attempt to treat or cure specific medical conditions such as cancer, heart disease and other diseases. This is for doctors to treat. However, reflexology can assess imbalances in a person as a whole and attempt to help the person’s own healing energy to resolve these imbalances.

For the treatment I was handed earbuds for my personal music selection and asked to lie face down. After settling into a comfortable position he began working on my feet pressing reflexology points. This was relaxing and never caused me any discomfort for half an hour, then he pressed up the back of my legs and worked up to my gluts and lower back pressing into acupuncture points. Moving up to the back he spent a long time meticulously pressing points over my back and along the spine. Some of these were intense but I could feel the release of tension in the area afterwards.

It’s fascinating to look at the map of the feet and hands with the points corresponding to parts of the body. These points act a mirror to the body. If pressing on the lung area or liver is painful it doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s a problem with your lungs or liver. It could be there are excessive toxins in these organs.

After I turned over he worked on the front of my legs and moved up to the arms and arms with more reflexology. There are points in the hands like the feet. To finish my treatment he worked on my shoulders, neck, head and face. At the end of the treatment I felt so relaxed with all the sore muscles in my back relieved.

There are many styles of reflexology, Chinese, Thai or the standard North American, which is used at Chill. This offers treatment without pain, which often is part of the Chinese style. I learned that it’s not necessary to suffer a painful treatment to get results. Check out Chill for a relaxing and effective treatment to improve your health in a comfortable and beautiful spa. They offer a discount on ninety minute treatments. How does it get any better than that? Chill Reflexology Jl. Kunti 118X, Seminyak. T: 361-734701 E: chill@chillreflexology.com W: www.chillreflexology.com It’s always a good idea about once a month to have a pedicure. Have your nails trimmed and shaped to prevent hangnails or broken nails. Removing calluses and rough skin on the sole of your feet allows your feet to breathe and feel soft. Your feet will look and feel better.

If you want to have pretty toes have polish added. Regular polish is fine or for long lasting shellac or gel. Eco Bali Spa does a great pedicure which includes hot paraffin wax to soften the skin. This is the only place I know of that uses paraffin, which feels wonderful on the feet. And they also give a nice foot and leg massage, which is a bonus. Make sure that the spa you go to sterilizes their equipment to prevent fungal infections. Eco Bali Spa Jl. Yes, as with just about every other restaurant in Bali, they have a Burger on the menu but this one [Angus] is on a brioche bun with caramelized onions, cheddar cheese and the Australian touch of sliced beetroot, an Aussie Burger!

Checking out most restaurants often begins with testing the cheapest dishes, it all begins there. For a seafood restaurant that has to be the good old Fish & Chips. Fish Bone offers Beer Battered Fish but no chips. The fish is three cylindrical fingers of OK fish in a nice light batter casing with a large dip of tartare sauce. Instead of chips they offer Chat Potatoes, which were burnt, dry and rather boring.

A large selection of sides offer more than just those Chat Potatoes, there is a Vietnamese Slaw with cashews, Sweet Potato & Ginger Puree and much more. It is amazing just how much both Thai and Vietnamese cuisines are influencing what is now called Mod Oz cuisine, one that is based on French/Italian kitchen techniques combined with the tastes of Asia. But then most suburbs in Australia have a Vietnamese restaurant and many Thai ones, to go with the Chinese that were always there, [as well as an occasional Italian and sometimes, a very rare French].

No doubt they think that they are trendier? What is wrong with old fashioned hand-cut potato chips [call them French

Fish Bone Local serves the ever increasing expat and tourist population of Canggu, giving them what they want.

TOKO BUKU Reviews of English language books on Indonesia

Camp Life Is Paradise for Freddy Camp Life Is Paradise for Freddy recounts Fred Lanzing’s youth in the Dutch East Indies, his experiences in Japanese internment camps and the first few months after liberation. Through the eyes of a child this book tells the dramatic story of the overthrow of an immense and helpless colonial empire, the routing of a puppet army and the upending, humiliation and incarceration of a white apartheid society.

by Fred Lanzing

Lanzing believes that a child’s view of his past reflects a more authentic memory, free of adult preconceptions and expectations. Children see and hear what is there while adults see and hear what they are expected to and mainly remember what they think they ought to remember. Lanzing‘s personal childhood experiences are innocent, devoid of prejudice, racism and discrimination. Nevertheless, when the book was first published in the Netherlands in 2007, it triggered furious controversy, if not hostility and vitriol.

This lyrical and richly detailed memoir offers all the excitement, drama and human complexity of popular historical fiction - acts of forgiveness, altruism and brotherly love; extremes of cowardice, bravery and sacrifice; inexplicable alliances; vignettes of avarice and wanton betrayal; nauseating cruelty and injustice; feats of endurance, suffering and defiance. Yet through it all, while he is witnessing extraordinary events, the author’s writing style is unsensational and matter-of-fact. Though he is deeply affected, his emotions seldom spill over onto the page. Before the 1942 invasion of the Dutch East Indies by Japanese land and sea forces, there are wonderful nostalgic descriptions of Lanzing’s idyllic boyhood in Batavia. Then in December 1941, the British battleships Prince of Wales and the Repulse were sunk by Japanese torpedo bombers in the South China Sea, leaving Singapore and the Dutch East Indies wide open to invasion. In March 1942, Batavia was declared an open city, defenceless as it awaited the arrival of the Japanese. In October 1942, the interment of Europeans (or those who looked European-enough) started. Nine-year-old Lanzing and his mother and sister, were interned in a women’s camp while his father was placed in a separate POW camp for men. In the course of 1942, the mood of the indigenous populations in the cities had grown hostile towards Europeans. Thus the internment camps, called tempat perildungan (protective area), offered protection for captive Europeans. In Java alone there were initially over 100 different camps, later consolidated to about 30. Though not an easy time, Lanzing’s detention paradoxically afforded him much freedom (as he put it, “no school, no shoes, no parents.”) Children had abundant time on their hands to play and embark on adventures but inevitably took on adult responsibilities and attitudes. Interned children were conscious of the circumstances that had been forced upon them, i.e. you certainly never give food away, you traded it. The young boy enjoyed the marvellous songs that the Japanese platoons of soldiers would sing during marching drills. The invading army conducted itself with discipline. Looters caught in the act were summarily shot. The telephone number of the Japanese police department was given out so that the citizenry could call to complain if anyone suffered harassment.

but many of the problems of camp life were caused or exacerbated by European camp leaders and the internees themselves. Moreover, Lanzing believes that many of the Dutch trials at the war’s end condemning Japanese to death as war criminals were more vengeful than just. So unlike the public’s dominant idea of a civilian prisoner of war camp run by Japanese was this writer’s view that he has been labeled a “pro-Jap” collaborator, an enemy of national solidarity and an immature egocentric disturbed individual. Reviewers suggested that the memoirist’s work ignores or trivializes the suffering of others and contradicts the real life experiences of thousands of around 27,000 child and adult survivors who were interned. Despite the book’s angry reception, Lanzing’s picture of Dutch internment in fact corresponds more closely with the scant historical record than do most camp memoirs. For example, The Way of a Boy (Penguin 1995), another memoir that depicts Dutch captives’ war time internment, shares a similar perspective and is a powerful confirmation of Lanzing’s own experiences. Camp Life Is Paradise for Freddy is a remarkable and thought-provoking memoir that expands our understanding of the Pacific War, the Dutch colonial experience and the modern history of Southeast Asia. Lanzing is particularly adept at re-creating his impressions, sensations, sights and sounds of his surroundings. Yet he’s a spare and concise writer who moves the story along at a steady pace. He sticks to the essentials, providing a lifelike background for the key events of the time. The book is one of the rare personal sources daring to speak out so bluntly about both the realities of camp life in the Indies and the subsequent 70-year span of misinformation that has followed since the war. With its unique and controversial perspective, the book convincingly contradicts popular myths and long-held misconceptions about the Japanese occupation.

Lanzing’s assertion was that his time in the camps was not the compendium of horrors commonly associated with the Dutch internment experience. This flew in the face of the long-established prevailing view that the Japanese occupiers were guilty of unvarying savagery, a belief which even now extends to the 2nd and 3rd generations in Holland and is even commodly found in official publications. Rather than unrelieved hell, life varied a great deal from camp to camp according to Lanzing. Even food shortages ranged widely and any case did not occur until the last months of the war. The reality of the camps was more akin to continuous boredom, quarrels and disputes among internees; uncertainty, incomprehensible regulations; lack of privacy and hygiene and hopelessness. Discomfort, overcrowding and poor hygienic conditions were undeniable,

School News Learning and Academic Success at Dyatmika Curiosity and Creativity Sparked by passionate subject specialists, and learning through the Cambridge International programme in first language English, our students build and maintain curiosity. We have a highly structured academic and pastoral support system to ensure each student’s wellbeing and academic progress are optimised. Our new performing arts centre and sustained success in visual arts qualifications are testament to our commitment for creativity to be a vital part of the curriculum. Subjects across the curriculum benefit from this, and collaborate to facilitate further creative thought in learning. Dyatmika students’ academic success in 2019 continued to show consistency:

Both our staff and student retention is high, with many students staying from Playgroup through to Class 12, and our average international teacher staying for over 5 years.

Extra Curricular and Trips

Our curriculum, excellence in teaching and learning, and one to one support throughout the university application process means our students receive locally unrivalled university offers and acceptances. Our students have high expectations of themselves, and realise their aspirations through their success.

Students benefit from the opportunities that Model United Nations, Scholar’s Cup, Global Issues Network and the International Young Person’s Award provide. This year we have had several trips abroad to network and collaborate with the wider student population in Asia - our links with charities ensure our students are aware of life outside of the Dyatmika community, and work to sustain these links through visits and fundraising. Our community garden also provides a wide range of opportunities for students to learn about permaculture, organising events, marketing our produce, and building links with the local community.

Our students take a lead in their own learning and, together with close friendships and community, set an achievement culture. We also aim for bilingualism - an important aspect of our close integration with our community. Students take Bahasa lessons ranging from first language to beginner, based on competency.

The School Council of students organise many events to enhance our community spirit, applying their learning in real life settings to a professional standard. Together with other volunteers, they lead with the organisation of our annual Science Fair and Art exhibition - the public opening of which is at 5pm Thursday 9th April at Komaneka Gallery, Keramas.

The Dyatmika campus is spectacular and, we feel, contributes to the well being of students, with views over the rice paddies to the ocean. We also have 2 large

University and Alumni

The Cambridge A Levels are regarded as highly as any other qualification worldwide; grades convert to high ATAR scores in Australia, and have allowed many of our Alumni to bypass up to 1 year of University in the US due to credits. For the UK, Canada, Holland, and many other countries, A levels allow a smooth transition directly into the first year of Bachelors study.

Dyatmika alumni keep in touch; we hold an annual Alumni event, and host many returning Alumni throughout the year who still feel their connection to our strong community spirit. They return to share their experiences of university with our current students and further enhance our students’ preparation for life after Dyatmika. We also ask every Alumni for feedback on their experience at Dyatmika, and how well they feel prepared for university - as well as very positive feedback, we work on any suggestions to continually improve. Kulture Kid Kita Main Cantik Saja Lah!

“Let’s play beautiful only!” Huh??? Indonesian expressions can be downright weird: think ‘masuk angin’ (enter wind) meaning a cold or ‘sakit hati’ (sick liver) for heart-broken. The above expression, however was a ‘newie’ for me. I heard it at a meeting about the environment when some like-minded colleagues were discussing how to deal with bureaucracy. Indonesians have a different, ultra-round-about approach at discussion and negotiations compared with the directness we have in many western countries. Discussions are not often lengthy and drawn out but also super polite. Conflict is avoided at all costs, and this includes raising one’s voice or using language that may offended. Indonesians say, “Sedikit aja salah ngomong kita bisa tersinggung” (Simply by speaking slightly out of line, someone may get offended). Another point to note is that hierarchy and respect are essential at meetings – not only is everyone formally introduced one by one but they are often also asked to introduce themselves. Indonesian meetings are also mini parties in themselves, social events complete with consumption of little snacks and drinks (unfortunately normally all wrapped in plastic, but I’ve written about this in another article). At times, meetings or discussions may seem constructive but more often than not result in ambiguities that resolve or achieve little. The expression ‘Kita main cantik saja lah!” is a tactical one and as an expression it is also ambiguous. It can mean a number of things: It can mean that they need to be super sweet and polite to get what they want. It could also mean that they need to do something or work with someone behind the scenes to get what they want while seeming sweet and polite. These can be both viewed as political maneuvers. This lack of straightforwardness is so common here and I see also my own wife and her family doing it all the time. My father in law can never say no to any request I have for him even when I know that he can’t fulfill it. In the same way, I see how my wife works around a point numerous times to get to the point with someone, then after that reinforcing it many times in different ways to make sure that everything is understood (while softening it at the same time). So, don’t forget if you are at a meeting and want to achieve something or convince someone, “main cantik saja lah!” – you may just get your way. Local News No casualties in Sanur beachfront resort fire: official Fire broke out at the Grand Inna Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur Monday evening, producing heavy dark smoke which was visible outside of the property. Authorities said there were no casualties in the incident. “We currently suspect electric short circuit causing fire to fabric and clothing [in the laundry room],” I Made Rentin, acting head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Bali, told Merdeka. According to reports, the fire started at around 6:30pm and was subsequently put out an hour later. Prior to the fire in the laundry room, there had been another fire on the 10th floor of the hotel, which was successfully put out by the hotel staff. However, the staff then noticed another fire starting on the 9th floor, where the laundry room is located, and proceeded to call the fire department. “There were no casualties in the incident, and we evacuated the guests right away. [The hotel] only endured material loss, but there are no estimates just yet,” Rentin told (Coconut.com 03/03/2020) Australian woman diagnosed with COVID-19 traveled from Iran via Kuala Lumpur and Bali: Australian official An Australian woman has been diagnosed with COVID-19 following recent travel from Iran via Kuala Lumpur and Bali, the government in the Australian state of Victoria announced yesterday. She is said to be recovering in isolation at home. Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton urged passengers who were on the same flight from Denpasar, particularly those sitting in the same row or two rows Melbourne Int. Australian officials were reportedly waiting on the flight manifest in order to contact the passengers. Sutton confirmed that the woman was in the early stages of her illness when she caught the flight, and later checked herself to a hospital on Saturday. She was confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 late Sunday. “It’s really only very close contact for a relatively prolonged period of time that puts someone at risk and it was at the very beginning of this case’s illness and so I think it’s unlikely that many people on that flight will be at risk,” the Australian official was quoted as saying. The Victorian government has also issued a recommendation for people who had traveled to a number of countries and become unwell to seek medical advice and be tested for COVID-19, the list of which included Indonesia. Indonesia today announced that two citizens have tested positive for COVID-19, making them the first people to be diagnosed in the country. Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto said that the patients are from Depok, a city in the outskirts of Jakarta, and were infected after coming into contact with a Japanese national who was diagnosed with the novel coronavirus in Malaysia shortly after leaving Indonesia. A New Zealand woman in her 60s became New Zealand’s first case of COVID-19 last Friday, following a recent travel from Iran to Auckland, on a flight that had also transited in Bali. As of yesterday, the Bali Health Agency says it’s still looking into the flight manifest for the Emirates flight EK450 that the New Zealander was on. The woman is believed to have left the airplane for at least 90 minutes in Bali before continuing on her journey to Auckland, though this has yet to be officially confirmed by Indonesian authorities. Several foreign nationals who recently traveled to Bali have tested positive for the disease upon returning to their respective home countries, including a Japanese national who visited in mid-February and a Chinese man who visited Bali in late January. However, it has yet to be determined if they contracted the virus while on the Island of the Gods. (Coconut.com 03/03/2020)

24 Denpasar-Gilimanuk toll road will start construction in 2021 Bali Governor Wayan Koster, said that the construction of the Denpasar-Gilimanuk Toll Road will begin in early 2021. The completion target of the 30-40 km toll road was set to be no later than 2023. The plan was presented by the governor at the launching the Bali BPD Quick Response Code Indonesia Standard (QRIS) for SME cash and non-cash payments in front of Bali Governor Office, Niti Mandala Denpasar on Friday. The governor also stated that the completion target of the toll road feasibility study (FS) was set for June this year. “We plan to tender the toll road project in September 2020 and land acquisitions will start when the tender begins,” Koster said to nusabali.com. If all goes to plan, continued Koster, the construction of the Denpasar-Gilimanuk Toll Road will start in early 2021. “With this plan, the toll road will be finished during 2023,” said Governor Koster. Besides the Denpasar-Gilimanuk Toll Road, Koster also wants to continue the Prof. Dr. IB Mantra Bypass from Kusamba Village (Dawan, Klungkung) to Padangbai (Manggis, Karangasem). Meanwhile, the quality of the Gilimanuk (Jembrana) to Singaraja (Buleleng) - Malapura (Karangasem) road will be improved. With these projects, he hoped that Bali Ring Road will be completely connected. He also stated that the feasibility study for Integrated Urban

Railroads (LRT) project of the Kuta-Ngurah Rai Airport and Sanur-Ngurah Rai Airport lines has been prepared, too. “The LRT will be constructed underground. This project will run fast now, because the FS has been completed,” said Koster. The governor also stated that economic practices must not only cause trash piles in Bali, but should provide benefits for the community. “I will not let Bali become the location of economic practices that only cause piles of trash in the area,” he said. “Bali’s economy must grow fairly and evenly, with benefits for community. Bali must be well designed,” Koster added. (Seminyaktimes.com 03/03/2020)

Bali government picks 3 hospitals to handle coronavirus outbreak The Bali provincial government has designated three hospitals to handle possible cases of coronavirus infections. For the worst-case scenario, in which a facility for more than 50 patients should be required, officials say one hospital might be designated to exclusively handle COVID-19 cases on the island. The Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar, Sanjiwani General Hospital in Gianyar regency, and Tabanan General Hospital are officially the three hospitals in Bali that will handle possible COVID-19 patients, with a total of seven isolation rooms and 35 rooms standardized according to guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO), as laid out in a statement issued by the Bali Health Agency. respond to and handle the novel coronavirus outbreak. “We were closed-up about it before, but now we are ready to be transparent so that tourists visiting Bali can be at ease. Our healthcare facilities are according to standard,” Cok Ace said. Indonesia finally confirmed its first two cases of domestic COVID-19 infections on Monday, after weeks of claiming it was free of infections as countries across the globe scramble with increasing cases of the novel coronavirus. The first people to be diagnosed with COVID-19 in Indonesia - a 64-year-old woman and her 31-year-old daughter - are making inroads towards recovery in Jakarta, officials say. He reassured that the provincial government is prepared to (Coconut.com 05/03/2020) “We advise the public not to worry, and not panic because the Government of Bali Province has applied a proper system with WHO standards,” the statement reads. Should the number of cases increase significantly, the designated hospital would be Udayana University Hospital, which is located in Jimbaran, South Kuta. “Worst case [scenario], if we have to designate one hospital to handle all cases of the coronavirus in Bali, we will do it too,” Bali Vice Governor Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, or Cok Ace, said yesterday, as quoted by Kompas.

Lack of coronavirus cases in Aussie tourism hotspot, Bali probably right, experts say Reports that the Aussie holiday favourite Bali has no coronavirus cases are probably correct, experts say, with travellers urged to follow official advice on the outbreak. There have only been two confirmed cases of the virus across Indonesia, with a mother aged 64 and her 31-year-old daughter announced on Monday to have the virus in capital Jakarta after coming into contact with a Japanese citizen. Experts have cast doubt on the lack of cases in the country, with a study by Harvard University in the US earlier claiming that the country, the world’s fourth most populated, may have missed some. Indonesians officials hit back, saying there was “no hoax”. But the capital city is on a different island more than 1000km away from the holiday hotspot visited by more than one million Aussies every year and so far, no cases have been reported in Bali. While the country’s government said via Bali.com on February 2 that three tourists were tested at Sangalah General Hospital in Denpasar but results found they didn’t have the virus. No further updates have been posted, but airports are checking people on arrival for symptoms. Australian National University’s infectious diseases specialist, Associate Professor Sanjaya Senanayake, said while he believed the government, some people may have been infected in Bali and the rest of the country, but not know it. “I definitely agree that such a large country so close to China it is surprising, but it may well be that that’s the case,” Assoc. Prof. Senanayake told nine. com.au. “It is possible they’re lucky, particularly if a large percentage of tourists are coming from Australia.” However, he added that 80 percent of people only get a mild case of the illness, so may not know they’ve got it and would not seek medical help. And while hospitals in Indonesian capitals are good, others in Bali might not be as strong if there is an outbreak, he added. Assoc. Prof. Senanayake said Australians with holidays booked should follow official government advice. While Indonesia, including Bali, is already at “exercise a high degree of caution” warning level, it’s not because of coronavirus, but terrorism. However, like many countries, the Smart Traveller Indonesia page has been updated with a coronavirus warning. “The Indonesian Government has confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Indonesia,” it reads.

“Australians should note the global situation with COVID-19 is changing very quickly. “Read our bulletin on COVID-19 for advice on measures to reduce the risk of infection. Talk to your doctor before travelling if you are in an at-risk group.” Meanwhile, Bali’s tourism bosses posted on Instagram this week about the coronavirus outbreak. “We feel your concern,” the post read. However, what we can do now is taking care of ourselves better by following the prevention steps. It told people to wash their hands and wear masks. With 100,000 Chinese visitors every month not able to travel since since flights from China to Indonesia were cancelled on February 5, tourism, the island’s biggest income, is suffering. The Straits Times reported at the recent Galungan festival locals were praying for the island. “We’re praying for good things in this universe and that the virus is gone soon so Bali’s tourism can bounce back,” priest Made Langgeng Buwana told AFP. Prime Minister Scott Morrison met Indonesian President Joko Widodo on February 10 in Canberra and confirmed the pair had discussed the outbreak. “We will continue to work closely with our medical advisers and the other arrangements that we have to ensure that we can both effectively carry out our responsibilities to our peoples to keep the health and well-being of our peoples in the highest possible order,” he said at the time. STARS WITH VIBHUTI HOROSCOPE MARCH 11 - MARCH 24, 2020

This is an auspicious time to begin again this astrology column. Saturn enters the sign of Aquarius on the 22nd and is a sign which includes the study of astrology, astronomy, space travel, cosmic events, technology and the global community to mention just a few. On the 24th, we have our first New Moon with this Saturn in its new home (at least until early July, when it dips back into Capricorn during its retrograde and returns for a 2 year stint in December) and this will begin a process of healing for the collective. A healing centered around the fight for freedom, independence and individual rights and this is highlighted as we have our first conjunction of Jupiter and Pluto (happens every 13 years) on the 5th April. Jupiter expands whatever it touches and as it joins with Pluto this means power and force exponentially increased. Jupiter and Pluto align twice more this year, at the end of June and for the last time in November. Jupiter then moves into Aquarius and joins Saturn to start their next 20 year cycle in December. So we have many powerful cycles ending and beginning in 2020; the first being Saturn and Pluto back in January to mark another 33-38 year cycle. (historically you can look at the previous conjunctions in 1914 -15, 1947 and 1982) Old models, from the personal to the collective are being transformed to make way for the radically new. Technology for sure is about to do an evolutionary leap, so too is humanity.

NEW MOON 04 Aries 12’ March 24, 2020 05:29 pm

FULL MOON 18 Libra 44’ April 08, 2020 10:36 am

This is the time of year when your attention turns naturally to your own needs, which is always easier for you than most. Your thoughts though are in the higher realms and you may be more introspective during this time period. Probably a good practice as you reflect on your career choices and vocation. Perhaps you’ve left a job or are in the process of creating something new for yourself and this could mean a movement away from more conventional roles and a movement towards communally based projects or start-ups. Of course finances are a concern and these can predictably fluctuate.

Your adventurous nature is being stimulated and you would like to travel to foreign lands or at the very least open your life to include a larger vista of possibilities. The mundane is about to take a quantum leap into the next level of operation. It will first become apparent within your primary relationships and as you gradually loosen the grip on your old model of daily existence, your work. The stirrings have been felt for some time and this is the moment to have those deeply emotional conversations that will pave the way for even more transformation, followed by metamorphosis.

Being of a fixed sign, you are not always comfortable with change. It always comes however, often at the time when we least expect it. The more stable traditions which have been handed down to you through the generations are being questioned as you feel the need to branch out in your work and this creates a ripple effect in your career, friendships and spiritual understandings. Your energy turns inwards as you prepare to launch into the next phase of your life; reflecting on the past and checking your perceptions to see if they are in alignment with this creative process.

Is it a romantic life you’re aspiring to live? No doubt you are spending some time thinking over the topic of relationship and your more romantic side is being stimulated, although there is a tendency towards idolisation and sacrifice at this time. Nothing to fear as your instincts will take over, particularly in the bedroom and you will know exactly what it is that you want. Work at the other end of the spectrum, is about to undergo some modification and potentially radical changes. You may even create a little antagonism within your daily cycle at the workplace and catalyse these changes.

As you ponder your previous choices with regard to your ambitions and goals you find it is time to dig deeply into the more shadowy aspects of self and find anything holding you back from fulfilling your dreams and aspirations. It’s time for a fresh start and to gather together like minded soul’s to create a hub of your very own. You may be well ahead of the field when it comes to tapping into future trends. Remember to leave the past where it belongs, even though you may have strong attachments and sentimental feelings associated with some old situations. Relationships are the key area of transformation for you Cancerians. Even though traditional set-ups, marriages or configurations have been your usual mode of sharing, this is the time to experiment with new ways of relating and sharing intimacy, time and resources. This is across all areas of your life, whether personal, private or business associations and you find yourself in a bit of leadership role during this time period. The deeper reflection has come through opening to a higher sense of connectivity with the cosmos. Perhaps aligning with your Higher Self, bringing rich rewards and surprising revelations and a call to action.

Jupiter is the ruler of your sign and this year promises to bring a great deal of change and letting go, at the deepest of levels. Your core values are being shaken and you feel the compelling urge to share what you’ve seen and learnt along the way. Family concerns maybe stirring your feelings and the main focus for now is on your children or creative projects. What is home to me and where do I belong? Nothing really lightweight at all. For now, do the work in front of you and when the time is right, the rest will be revealed. Saturn your planetary ruler has been in your sign for the past two years and will soon depart. As a normally grounded and practical person you may soon find yourself doing things slightly left of center. You may take unusual financial risks or start a business that is quite different from that which you’ve been involved in, in the past. There may be a sudden humanitarian or philanthropic streak revealed in you. At surface level family matters are asking for your attention and there may be arguments, although your mind is more preoccupied with sentiment and spiritual matters.

As the significant others in your life take some time to do their own thing you get some space to yourself to reflect upon your work or your daily job. There’s been a lot of focus on the family and home and although this continues for quite some time to come, you feel the gears shift and more movement in the direction of your creative processes. It’s appropriate for you to experiment a little, to try new ideas and move in a different direction to that which you’ve travelled before. New beginnings take time and are a process of unfolding.

Saturn was the ruler of Aquarius before the discovery of Uranus and as it moves into your sign and over the next couple of years, you will be able to use its influence to benefit your work projects and generally in getting your life organized. You’ll be feeling empowered over these next weeks, meanwhile the deep work continues internally unbeknownst to those around you. Dreams can be strong and so too your psychic and intuitive abilities. You are a sentimentalist at heart and value caring for others and the planet and you’re busy ushering in the new model of existence.

These are revolutionary years for you as you rebirth yourself through your thoughts and actions. Transformation can be one step forward and two steps back to rework it again and again. Once you realise, that as much as you would like it to be one straight line forward, it isn’t and to think that you are free of familial patterning before you are is folly for the wise. Healing means accessing your inner sense of freedom, no matter what happens externally. To feel your spirit connected to all of existence in every heartbeat and within each breath.

You are no stranger to deep feelings and your heart is easily worn on your sleeve for all to see and you’ve felt the ebb and flow of the emotional tides within your community and that of the global family over recent months, years and lifetime and now you are ready to go even deeper. Who would have thought that this was even possible. The time has come to take a stand as you tap into a higher power within. You are a channel for Divine healing energy and yet know not how it will express itself. To live your life in this way takes courage and faith.
