MOUNT AGUNG REFUGEES NEED CLEAN DRINKING WATER. The imminent eruption of Mt. Agung volcano in Bali has displaced over 140,000+ people with now hundreds of refugee camps. We at Social ImpaKt are already on the ground helping to provide clean drinking water in the camps but we need more funding to keep supplying the growing need of water filters. The water filters have never been more important than NOW. We are fundraising for the refugee camps. Any amount is welcome. We need your support. And please spread the word. You can donate online on http://bit.ly/2hMZ2JI or contact us on our Facebook page Social ImpaKt for cash donations.

4 The Frugal Balinist ✱ Flashlights. I already have more LED flashlights than makes any sense but am still tempted by the awesome selection at DX.com where one can order anything you could ever dream of, including dimmable LEDs. Free shipping by Hong Kong post. There’s also DX.COM.ID, which is all cellular stuff. Nice flashlights can also be found at Gramedia (Jl. Dewi Sartika, Denpasar) at the same counter with the fancy pens. If you’re using high intensity flashlights you should be using rechargeable Lithium ion batteries that can be bought inexpensively locally. UltraFire 6800 MAh batteries are for sale about 50 yards before Pasar Satria, on the other side of the street at the little electronics store there. Eiger sells a great LED flashlight with an adjustable beam for around Rp250,000. It comes with a charger and 4000 MAh 18650 battery. Zeigler also makes high quality LED flashlights, usually available in Gramedia and to a lesser extent at Mitra 10.

✱ What is organic? Bali’s organic movement is a way to heal the environment, preserve the family farm, expand local access to locally grown food and offer consumers better tasting and more nutritious food. If the food you buy isn’t from farms controlled and certified by the BOA (Bali Organic Association- https://www.facebook.com/baliorganicassociation), it’s uncertain that it’s 100% organic and as chemical-free as possible. Be suspect of everything that is labeled or declared to be “organic” – even chicken manure. Papayas, which grow like weeds in every yard, do not need to be sprayed. And the organic label used when selling coconut is meaningless. What coconut wouldn’t be organic? Always write the name of the name of the non-chemical product/supplier so you remember to buy the same next time.

✱ Don’t pay surcharge! Few consumers are aware that it’s illegal for merchants to apply a credit card surcharge in Indonesia to cover the cost of credit card commissions or for any other reason. All surcharges are outlawed by Bank Indonesia since 2011 (Regulation 11/11/PBI/2009). Refuse any amount of surcharge, whether it be 1%, 2.5% or 4%. Melarang adanya surcharge dalam transaksi pembayaran menggunakan kartu. When such charges are sought, report the offending merchant to your bank immediately so that their agreement with BCA, BNI, etc. can be terminated. Merchants are also forbidden from stipulating that a card user pay a minimum amount when using his or her credit card.

✱ Agung eruption prep. Before evacuating from Amed, Tulamben, Amlapura and surrounding areas and taking up temporary residence with friends, family or in a hotel, protect your vacated property against break-ins. Cover water tanks and pools with tarps; filter A/C compressor intakes with plastic mesh or put a cover over the tops; stock up with water, LPG and groceries. Ash clouds generally follow prevailing winds, usually to the NW this time of year. The best mask model is the Besten N95 available from Tokopedia (Rp100,500/packet of 20).

✱ e-cards implementation. Effective 01Sept17, no cash payment of toll fee will be accepted by the 52,000 vehicles who use the Mandiri toll road each day. Only non-cash payments via e-cards will be accepted. E-cards are available from Bank Mandiri (E-Money), Brizzi (BRI), Topcsh (BNI), BPD Bali, Blink (BTN), FLAZZ (BCA) and most but not all IndoMarts. Top up your e-card by purchasing value to be stored on the card which never expires.

✱ Best bank. The government-owned BRI (Bank Rakyat Indonesia, “The People’s Bank”), with branches in even the smallest villages throughout Indonesia, charges only Rp5000 to transfer (mengkirim uang) any amount to a BRI account. *BRI also charges a stupefyingly cheap lending rate of only 0,9% per month or 9% per year. Use the money to buy a car, start a business or do a major home renovation. You have to be a resident of the district you live in, own a house or other substantial collateral, have had a steady income (penghasilan) for at least a year from a legitimately registered business and you or your spouse have to be an Indonesian citizen. They’ll want to see your IMB building permit or PMA or P.T. papers/documents, et al.

✱ Air Asia tips. Don’t try to get anything over on this fine-tuned money-making machine. Air Asia’s website is pure slick wizardry. It’s like playing a pinball machine trying to get past all the options without incurring additional charges. When I bought my ticket, I remember being deeply frustrated at not being able to call customer service in Bali to ask about various details of my ticket purchase. When signing up for travel insurance online, it behooves one to read the fine print. Although their flight insurance plan may seem like a bargain at Rp55,000, there are tight restrictions. For one, it only covers a missed connection if there is no other Air Asia flight within six hours of your missed connection. That lazy oversight cost me US$163 because I was forced to buy a brand new ticket! ✱ Plastic galore. Lotte Mart carries a huge variety of plastic ware. Besides the usual plates and bowls there are garbage containers, wash tubs, chairs, pails, racks, etc. For any of these items you have a choice of several different brands in a number of sizes and colors. With its low prices and aisle after aisle of plastic products to choose from, this is go to place for any large size plastic item as most stores in Bali offer only a small selection.

✱ Health is Wealth. The most dangerous animal to humans is the house fly that carries more diseases than any other creature. *Fly paper (Lem Lalat Cap Gajah) is a simple, effective way to keep the fly population down in your house and costs only Rp4,500/3-sheet pack. A dish of coconut water also traps flies. *Balinese swear by Minyak Oles Bokashi (12 ml bottle Rp25,000; 35 ml Rp45,000; 65 ml Rp80,000; 140 ml Rp135,000), a traditional herbal rubbing oil - concocted from a mixture of 315 medicinal plants - for treatment of skin diseases, warts, calluses, new wounds, burns, insect bites, muscle aches & pains. *Columbia University found that one half of 15,500 adult smokers had successfully quit smoking in the past 5 years with the help of e-cigarettes. *Replace your sponge with a new one every week as cleaning a dirty sponge only helps its worst bacteria. *All Indonesians are eligible for free testing services at Bali Peduli (www.balipeduli.org) and fees for foreigners are far less expensive than commercial labs, local hospitals and clinics on Bali. *The women of my family highly recommend Obat Nyeri Haid Feminax for SMS (only Rp2,000/four tablets); their 2nd-choice is the jamu Kiranti (Rp5500/150 ml bottle). The Benefits of Trashing the Garden ‘Dear Garden Doctor, I want to use natural fertiliser but don’t have the patience for a compost, do you have any ideas for other easy ways to give my plants a natural kick with organic fertiliser. I’ve heard that banana peels can be used in the garden from vegetable gardens to flowers, palm trees and even thrown in the tops of staghorn ferns. Do you have any other easy ideas for natural fertilisers that can be made from ordinary household scraps that would otherwise end up in the rubbish bin? Rafa from Ubud’ Adding any sort of organic matter to the soil to will improve the nutritional content and vitality of the soil whilst also inviting worms and all sorts of other beneficial micro-organisms to move in. A living soil that is teeming with life will always show the results by producing a lush green garden. The easiest place to start is to re-use waste that you find within the garden.

Kitchen Scraps They are great for the compost, but can also be incorporated directly back into the soil, decomposing rapidly and releasing nutrients for your plants. Fruit peels such as banana peels, mango, papaya and avocado skins will decompose quickly when lightly dug into the soil, alternatively simply just throw them around the base of your plants and cover with a layer of soil and leaves. Peels will provide potassium, phosphorous and calcium as well as many other trace minerals which will promote root and flower development and overall plant health. If you are concerned about attracting pests or animals, dry the peels in the sun before adding them into the garden or liquefy the peels in a blender with water before pouring it on to your garden.

When you wash your rice, instead of wasting the starchy water by pouring it down the sink, water it around your plants and flowers. Just make sure to pour it directly onto the soil and avoid getting it all over leaves and flowers. The starches will promote beneficial soil bacteria, whilst also adding nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous and other trace elements to the soil. Empty or near empty drink containers can also be used to water to the garden. If I go to the fridge and find the last remains of a milk or fruit juice container I fill it up with water to dilute the contents and then pour it straight onto the garden. Milk diluted with water is a well known fertiliser for the garden. The same goes for any drinks that have passed their use-by.

Leaves and Garden Waste

The benefits are twofold, not only will the soil benefit from the slow release of nutrients, it also retains moisture within the soil or can prevent moisture loss from evaporation if layered on as a mulch. Alternatively, you can dig it into the soil, where it will aerate the soil and improve drainage in combination with the action of worms, insects and microbes working to break it down. When tidying up the garden recycle the garden off-cuts, making sure that they’re pest and disease free. Old dry palm fronds can be cut up and reincorporated into the soil. If your off-cuts are green, leave them in a pile out in the sun for a few days so that they dry up, turn brown and then can easily be shredded and reincorporated into the soil. Dead or dried up flowers can be pruned and scattered around the garden beds. Dried grass clippings are also one of the best nitrogen boosts you can give to your garden. Collect all garden waste, and cycle it back into the garden, it is full of the nutrients that have been sucked up from deep within the soil.

If you like boiled eggs, save the water until it cools and pour it on the garden as it will contain calcium and other minerals. Eggshells can also be used as seedling planters. With a pin make a few drainage holes in the bottom of an empty eggshell, add soil and then put them back into the old egg carton. Sow the seeds and care for them as you would any other seedlings. When they are ready to transplant into the garden, squeeze the shell gently to crack it and then place it in the ground. The roots will push through the cracks in the shell which will eventually decompose naturally, the best bit is… no transplant shock! Starchy Rice Water and Other Sugars

All of the leaves that fall, the pruned offcuts, and the flowers that you deadhead contain vital nutrients that have been drawn up from deep within the soil. That’s why composting is so beneficial, it’s all about recycling the nutrients back into the soil. If you don’t have the patience for composting, then do it nature’s way and cycle the nutrients directly back into the soil.

Raking up old leaves and spreading them around the garden as a layer of mulch is one of the easiest and most effective ways to get started. Leaf mould or decaying leaf material is so simple, yet extremely beneficial. It’s one of the most readily available amendments you can add directly into your soil to improve it.

the sharp jagged shell grit. Not only are you providing a natural fertiliser but also protecting your plants from slimy pests as well.

Coffee Grounds and Tea Leaves Coffee grounds and tea leaves are a source of nitrogen for the garden. You can either scatter coffee grounds around the base of your plants or fork them into the soil. With the teabags I normally collect a few then tear the paper and throw them in a bucket with water and pour the onto the soil. Coffee grounds and used tea leaves will give nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and magnesium. The same goes for herbal teas, the green tea, rosehips or whatever sort that you drink can be poured out onto the garden or around your pot plants. Eggshells They consist of over 90% calcium carbonate and contain small amounts of other trace elements that make them a beneficial fertiliser. Collect them, wash and crush them, and then sprinkle them around the garden. They will add a hit of calcium and other minerals to the soil. Spread them around pot plants, your vegetable garden and outdoor trees. If you are growing an edible garden crushed egg shells sprinkled around plants will discourage snails and slugs, as they won’t crawl across

Simply dilute old containers with water and pour the contents around the garden. Even old bottles of soda can be rinsed and poured onto the garden, the microbes and plants will love the sugar hit. The added benefit is that you will have clean rinsed containers, instead of smelly sticky ones filling up the rubbish bin. On a final note, the napkins, paper towels etc used at meal time are also thrown into the compost along with the old newspapers - the worms absolutely love that stuff. Who would’ve thought that trash could be so useful in the garden!

8 Joshua District – Shipping Containers by Anita T The slogan “Recycle or Die” embossed on one of Joshua District’s walls sums up the o environmentally friendly philosophy behind e the creative enclave in the village of Kediri th just north of Tanah Lot, a world away from ju the island’s chaotic tourist areas. Constructed th out of steel shipping containers sourced from o Indonesian harbors, the stylish complex is a In playful reminder of the contrast between urban p cculture and Balinese nature, in this case the ssurrounding rice fields and quaint ocean views in distance. “The idea was to create something unique that blends nature with industrial n the distance somet but recycled design,” says Petr Vancura who co-founded the project along with Lucas Cerny and Martina Cerna. “Even so, when we were standing in the middle of a construction site around three years ago, none of us were able to say what was going to happen and what the exact concept was. The place grew gradually and organically.” The first shipping container villa was completed in 2014. Shortly after, the Czech trio received news from a friend who was so impressed with the unique abode, and its tranquil location, that he asked them to build a second villa for him. “A year after that job was completed, there were still just two shipping container villas in the middle of the rice fields with nothing else around. It meant no restaurants or places to get some decent food,” Petr says. “When another two investors asked us to build villas for them as well, the concept of Joshua District, as an interactive space where people from around the world can meet and share their skills and experiences, was born.”

COPPER & BRASS SPECIALIST ILLUMINATING BALI’S BEST HOTELS, VILLAS & RESTAURANTS SINCE 2004

Today the complex consists of a coffee shop, art gallery, fashion concept store and four villas, all constructed out of spruced up shipping containers. There is also a small half pipe for skateboarding. Interestingly, shipping containers – what Petr refers to as “cold steel boxes” - are definitely not the first thing that pops into mind when one visits Joshua District. Instead the villas feature wooden paneling that masks their steel core and gives them the appearance of wooden structures, and chic interiors dominated by concrete, glass, plasterboard and recycled materials such as driftwood. Not just quick and easy to assemble, Petr says that there are very few logistical limitations when it comes to building with shipping containers, other than actually obtaining the material. “They always find the way to transport the containers, but the timing is sometimes quite challenging. At the moment we are waiting for shipping containers that were supposed to be here three weeks ago. You know ‘Bali time’.”

Petr says that it only takes around six or seven months to build a villa out of shipping containers as the compact pieces are easy and relatively quick to connect together. They can also be configured into a wide variety of forms. “Of course, this timeframe also depends on the size of the villa and the complexity of its design. Literally it’s like playing with LEGO. Best of all, shipping containers make pretty stable structures, which can be an advantage, for example, during an earthquake,” he says, adding that the trio are currently in the process of constructing a photo studio and an additional villa.

While its design if definitely striking, Joshua W District is primarily about people, and one of the D aims aim of the project is the creation of a community of like-minded individuals. With this in mind, the trio are already planning future additions to make the space more community oriented, including a yoga shala, and a multifunctional space for events, conferences and workshops. Petr says eve that tha Joshua District is also currently organizing a cultural immersion program for 16 people. c “It’s called ‘Trip to Paradise’ and it’s going to be awesome. Our guests will have an opportunity to not just see amazing places here in Bali but also do something creative with us at our workshops,” he says. “Overall we’d like to keep Joshua District as a meeting point for people from around the world who want to share and exchange skills and experiences. The vision is to improve the current state of things and leave a positive mark.”

Villa Private residences Hotels & resorts Corporate

http://www.joshuadistrict.com While Joshua District is a growing project, shipping containers also make a perfect construction material for small businesses. As such, it is not surprising that over the past few years Bali has seen a plethora of popup restaurants and cafes fashioned out of these steel structures. Astrid Angeline, the cofounder of Halal Boys, a pop-up in a striking yellow container that sells chicken and lamb rice platters in Seminyak (and further afield in Jakarta) says that the relatively low cost, ease of assemblage and mobility make shipping containers a particularly appealing option for new businesses. According to Astrid, there are very few logistical challenges to setting up shop in a container, other than finding an appropriately priced location where the store can be visible. “I think nowadays people want something that is low cost and efficient. Lots of people have ideas and they want to implement them quickly and make profit back as soon as possible,” she says. “We were looking for something convenient and mobile, easy to move from location to location, and with a low set up cost. Shipping containers have done the job perfectly.” http://thehalalboys.com/home/

Occasional Articles From Our Readers

Life in Amed Under the Shadow of Mt. Agung by Maya Lola Horowitz I have such mixed feelings about writing this article. I love Amed. I love my friends in Amed. I love the community that welcomed me earlier this year. I am American, and after 29 years in Paris, I came to Indonesia last November for what my now all grown up kids call my Mommy gap year. I love the peace in Amed. I am not eating nor praying nor loving. This sleepy coastal town in East Bali has flourished as a hub for divers and tourists who want a different experience than most of the rest of the island. Restaurants, hotels, dive shops coexist with a very traditional Balinese community made up of farmers/ fisherman and now young business people that, despite the influx of industry versus farming, has held onto their traditions and their roots. That development began some time ago but has increased exponentially in the past few years. I have been welcomed into this community. Created fast friendships with locals and expats alike. Started to free dive which has been life changing. Who would have ever imagined that I would be thrilled to live this simple life? And I have been. Such an overall chill place. Smoothie bowls arrived in Amed just this summer. I can even now get a great cappuccino but Amed still maintains the absolute authenticity that it always has. There is even a new wonderful organic resort where the restaurant marries the cooking skills of one of Amed’s best local cooks and her Spanish business partner. My mom came to Amed to celebrate her 80th birthday in August. Hard to imagine that just six weeks ago we were tooling around the gorgeous Karangasem region on my scooter. I was so happy to share my life in Amed with her. And then Gunung Agung. Level 3 alert. The recent top floor construction where I have been staying was shaking with the earthquakes. People were torn with how seriously to take all of this. Cultures colliding. Science versus religion. Prayer versus preparation. And while Amed is a “safe town,” my place literally looks straight on Gunung Agung and I am just about 2.5 km beyond the 12 km zone.

I decided to leave. Unlike many of the people I care so deeply about, I do not have a business there. My family is not there. My attachment is purely emotional. So I came to Ubud for what I thought would be a weekend and then had the intention of reassessing. My thought was that I could be of a whole lot more help sitting behind a computer with my phone and my head clear raising awareness and donations outside of Bali than I would be sitting in Amed. Agung hit a level 4 alert the day after I left. Many of those who teased me for leaving, left themselves. Tensions were high. Jump to a couple of weeks later. I have since sent for the belongings I left behind. And I am still in Ubud. A friend of a friend loaned me her place in the rice fields. Ubud is merely 30 km from Amed and yet, it is as though barely anyone is aware of the 150,000 internally displaced people in the past two weeks. 500 camps. Some official. Others not. And yet, life here seems to be status quo as I gather it is across most of the island. Except for those in the camps. And those with businesses in Eastern Bali. And those working tirelessly to respond to immediate needs like food and sanitation in these camps. And longer term solutions for when it happens – if it happens. The speed and depth of this crisis is chilling. A few days ago I got a message from my a dear friend - a sort of Amed “matriarch” in the “patriarchal” society which is Amed. She owns one of the long standing Warung’s in town. « Amed is die, nothing to do. I don’t know what I can do for our family. No work, no tourist.. I been crying, I would like to sall what I have but people bargain very cheap. Please make Amed Like before honey.. I need job. » All this in just a few short weeks. And no eruption.

In reality, nobody knows if this eruption will be tomorrow, in six months or never at all. But Level 4 out of 4. People speak with certainty but there is none. Unless there is. And this is part of the tragedy with regard to donations. No sensationalist images of natural disaster and yet - it is an absolute disaster already. Amed has become a ghost town. Tourists have fled. Many businesses closed after merely ten days after the level 4 alert. Those who stayed got closer. The one positive thing out of all of this I must say is the sense of community that I have seen flourish. Facebook groups and Whatsapp messages abound. And rallying to help prepare for when it happens. If it happens. Brochures about poisonous gas, “how to” videos on preparation, and evacuation plans. It is just so surreal and I am insanely sad. No matter what happens, Amed will pay dearly for this perhaps false alert or maybe tragedy. Please consider making a donation. They need our help. Amazing organizations like Agung Siaga have popped up to help those people both for immediate needs and also long term planning which is what the issue is in Amed. And despite the fact that Amed has a great deal more money than some of the farming villages on the side of Agung, investments and financial stakes are proportionally higher. The past weeks have been about preparation. About education. About cultural sensitivity. And while a few weeks ago I was focused on hitting my freediving goal of 25 meters, today I walk around with a volcanic ash mask and goggles in my bag and talking about how to tape up a house with plastic – just in case.

Teach somebody how to read, they’ll have that for a lifetime. The Rotary Club of Bali Lovina is an English-speaking Club with enthusiastic members from several countries. Our club holds biweekly meetings every second Wednesday from 10.00 am till 11.00 am in the Tempo Doeloe restaurant, Jalan Binaria Kaliasem-Kalibukbuk Lovina (near the dolphin statue). We are involved in projects primarily aimed at assisting the less fortunate people of Buleleng Regency (North Bali). As the only club in Buleleng we have a lot of ground to cover! Currently we are running two major ongoing projects: The Eyeglasses for SMP/SMA students which the BA Rotary News corner reported on earlier this year, and an extensive literacy project. Why and what do we do in the field of improving literacy in our area? First a short introduction: Rotary is dedicated to six areas of focus to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever. One of these areas of focus is basic education and literacy. More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population. Rotary’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. Rotary supports education for all children and

literacy for children and adults. Most Rotary Clubs, big and small are running literacy projects. Our Rotary Club started its first literacy project in 2006, the year our club was chartered and has since then had a proactive education and literacy committee. Nurturing reading interest begins with making books available; hence, the first children’s library in the area, the Window to the World library was the first one to receive help in the form of book donations. Over a period of several years, thanks to sponsors including the Rotary Club of Kenwick, WA, the SKKI foundation and Rotary Club Hilversum West, The Netherlands and the Indonesian Pondok Baca foundation, we have been able to provide books and other literacy materials to a number of elementary schools in Buleleng. We have been able to give books to schools in areas where children had never had the opportunity to read books before. The school library project is currently surveying the participating schools to determine their needs, whether it be more books, more literacy materials, further training, and so on. It is anticipated that one of the major needs will be for more books and materials for protection and repair of books. Donations to this project are most welcome!

C/G/I-16 August 17

However; being literate does not just mean the ability to read a book or a newspaper. In our schools’ locality most children will follow a basic education and will learn how to read and to write. Being literate means being able to comprehend the instructions on a medicine bottle, a set of directions, or a job posting. Literacy means being part of the larger society. It means inclusion, and it means empowerment. Teaching children reading skills is of the utmost importance and this is how we moved to the next step in our literacy program. But this requires years of gentle tutoring, committed teachers and involving parents in the process. Realizing that getting children into the libraries isn’t enough to solve illiteracy, our Rotary Club has broadened the program including mentoring and coaching teachers and librarians. Currently, under the auspices of the Window to the World school in Lovina, and with the help of a generous donation by VBJ Architecture, The Netherlands, a series of workshops is being held to assist the schools and their library staff in the more active use of these library materials in improving literacy. During these workshops teachers and librarians learn how to actively develop a love of reading and better reading comprehension skills among students as well as how to manage their libraries better. 17 Living with Vulcan Once upon a time, the activity of a volcano in a distant domestic backyard from which one is temporarily absent would have been something relayed at intervals by news reports, or not at all. Its inactivity ahead of anticipated action would have been even harder to detect through the prism of news reportage. Not these days, when both the mainstream and the social media bring you up to the minute information and misinformation. Sorting the wheat from the chaff is more immediate (though there’s a lot more chaff) but there’s no reason to be uninformed. So it is with the Great Mountain, Gunung Agung. It is more than 70 kilometres from our domestic premises on the Bukit. When we wrote this Diary, from even more distant Portugal, the mountain was grumbling and had been promoted by Indonesia’s excellent alert apparatus to most dangerous threat, as a result of this misbehaviour. The story, at that point, was the removal by government order of more than 100,000 people whose villages and farms are within the defined danger zone, and the consequences, individual and collective, of this displacement. Relief efforts have brought out the best in people, Indonesians and foreigners alike. But it was not the sort of shock-horror story the western media so loves, since it was actually a good news story. It was a story of swift and effective action by provincial and national governments and agencies, and the outlaying of significant sums of money to assist those in need. We know of course that other than in exceptional circumstances, or in the glossy magazines, a good news story about Bali is about as likely to be seen as a phoenix or a unicorn. We’ve had the usual tremulous twittering of Australians fearful that their cheap holidays might be at risk. Travel insurance generally covers such tribulations. That’s if you had the wit to get it (and pay for it) in the first place. If you can’t afford insurance, you shouldn’t travel. If you’re so thick that you can’t work out that it matters, you certainly shouldn’t. There was one particular bit of very yellow journalism that got right up our nose. It did this in quite a major way. Surprisingly it appeared in The Guardian, which is usually among the more sentient of journals. It reported that foreign holidaymakers had fled Bali’s “tourist towns” because of the volcano alert. But this was the case only in Amed, a tiny place that barely qualifies as a village, let alone a town, and which is in the far east of the island virtually in the shadow of Mt Agung. It’s not inside the precautionary evacuation zone, though if the volcano did erupt then road access to and from it might be compromised. Meanwhile it was business as usual everywhere, including in Amed. The last time Agung erupted, in 1963, there were large numbers of deaths. The official figures from that time probably understate the actual numbers. This time, half a century on, there are better communications and transport infrastructure that works, in the main. There is also an appreciation on the part of governments and authorities that, with a volcano, you can’t just sit around and hope it doesn’t erupt. In Balinese Hindu mythology, Agung is thought by some to be a portion of Java’s sacred Mt Meru brought to the island by the original settlers. It has a place in the island’s spiritual life and its actions are accorded godly intent. In 1963 its pyroclastic flows (lava) missed the Mother Temple, Pura Besakih on the middle slopes of the mountain, by only metres. This was seen as a sign that the gods wished to demonstrate their angry displeasure but not to destroy the pinnacle of Balinese Hindu observance. There were two major eruptions in 1963, the first in February and March, and another in May. Most casualties came from lava flows. Cold lahars (mixed slurries of volcanic and other materials generated by heavy rains) killed many others. A lahar – it’s an Indonesian word – can flow very quickly, unlike lava, and very deeply. When it stops it solidifies like concrete. Look at the landscape around Kubu, one of the areas now evacuated, to see the long-term results of that phenomenon. We don’t pray, being in the None of the Above classification except on our Indonesian official documents, but we do think. And we’re thinking positive thoughts for Bali and its people while we’re away and Agung is being a threat.

A Rare Double We were in Lisbon, enjoying 30C days in the middle of the Lusitanian autumn, when this column was given to the electronic pigeon for transmission to the good folk at the Bali Advertiser. The Portuguese capital is a location long desired as a destination on our personal travel schedule, for many reasons but also because it presents an opportunity to perform a rare obeisance.

HECTOR’S Some years ago we were in Kochi in India, where among the points of interest locally is the tomb of Vasco da Gama. It’s empty, but so what? He is still felt as a physical presence in the city, where – just in passing in this instance – there is a thriving Christian presence that was already ancient when the Portuguese adventurer “discovered” the India trade for Christ and His profits half a millennium ago. Old Vasco is something of a figure in Lisbon, too, so we said hello there as well. His other resting place is in the Jerónimos Monastery at Bélem, fortuitously close to the best custard tarts in Lisbon. The city is big on history, historiography, and monumental statuary. Dom Joāo I, splendidly mounted and holding his sceptre aloft, is near our digs, a pleasant apartment on the steep slopes just below the Castelo de S. Jorge. He was King of Portugal and the Algarve from 1385–1433 and is referred to as “the Good” and sometimes “the Great” in Portugal, or “of Happy Memory”.

In Spain he was referred to as “the Bastard”, because that’s what he was, and because he preserved the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal from the Kingdom of Castile. Through his efforts to acquire territories in Africa, he became the first king of Portugal to use the title “Lord of Ceuta”. C/E/I-02 August 17

Ceuta is now a Spanish enclave on the coast of Morocco. It’s not quite analogous to Gibraltar, which is a bit of Spain the British long ago requisitioned as a spoil of war, though the point may be moot. Joāo (John, as his English wife Philippa, daughter of John of Gaunt, might have called him, though she of course spoke French like all the posh Poms of the time and possibly called him Jean) deserves his statue: he had his day and won an entry in the record.

Spoiler Alert It used to be said that there were eight million stories in the naked city. Well, that’s what that old TV series said, so it must be right. There are also eight million hard-luck stories, a matching phenomenon with which every traveller must surely be familiar. The Diary prefers to deal with these gently and in a nonjudgemental way, while trying not to part with too much currency, especially when travelling on a pauper’s budget. The Distaff, being a girl, is made of far sterner stuff. We were lunching out in Málaga, in Andalusia, one day, enjoying in equal measure the warmth of the Mediterranean autumn and a modest beer and some tapas, when one of the local mendicants chanced to pass. The tale was extraordinary, which is to say it was unbelievable. But since the immediate supplication was for 50 cents (€0.50, roughly Rp. 6500) to buy a loaf of bread, we were ourselves disposed to dig deeply into our diminishing pocket money and come up with the dosh. Some might say that this indicates a certain measure of softness in the Diary, but that is not the case. Fifty cents to go away quietly, whether or not temporarily buoyed by thoughts of the brotherhood of man, seems to us to be a bargain triple entry in the fiscal, moral and problem solved ledgers. Not so the Distaff, dear girl. As the pleas gathered length, speed and descant, she fixed the person uttering this tosh with her trademark killer steely glare and said: “You are spoiling my day. Go away.” This was not a request. It plainly invited no further conversation. It worked like a charm. The holiday budget was preserved.

See You Soon Barring accidental arrest en route or major volcanic dyspepsia at home, we’ll be back in Bali just in time to run up the road to Ubud for the 2017 Writers and Readers Festival. Unlike arrest or volcanic unrest, the festival is an event not to be missed.

The Strange & Wonderful World of Indonesian Stamps : Part One Before email and online payments spelled their precipitous decline, there was a time when people paid attention to postage stamps. You didn’t even have to be a collector to appreciate the quirky and rare among stamps that were used to mail bills, letters and postcards. Nowadays philately, or stamp collecting, has been all but stamped out. But stamps were given a longer lease of life in Indonesia. Though the average age of collectors worldwide is 65 to 70, collectors in Indonesia tend to be younger and still consider stamps objects of beauty. The whole kaleidoscope of the nation’s history, geography, culture and politics can be seen its postage stamps. World Post Day, which fell on October 9th, is an appropriate time to celebrate Indonesia’s colorful and unique postal history which began when it was still under the yoke of Dutch colonialism. The earliest “stamps” were actually postal seals printed with the amount of the postal fee due. These date from the very start of the VOC era in 1602 and were in use up to the issuance of the first Netherlands East Indies stamp in 1864 which bore the likeness of King Willem III. The Japanese occupation (19421945) of the Dutch East Indies in World War II, a time of extreme hardship for the population, saw a wide variety of stamps issued that facilitated the politicization of Indonesians and lauded the occupier’s efforts to educate, train and arm many young Indonesians in their war effort. The occupiers gave nationalist leaders a political voice for the first time. These old stamps today are priced as high as Rp1 to Rp5 million each. When the Netherlands sought to reclaim the Indies after the war in 1945, a bitter four-year diplomatic, military and social struggle ensued, resulting in the colonialists recognizing Indonesian sovereignty in December 1949. During this revolutionary period, the new republic’s first stamps made their debut in the nationalist strongholds of Java and Sumatra. On these early stamps appeared the very first use of the word ‘Indonesia.’ T h e n e w government designed all stamps and made all decisions concerning production and distribution. At first printed by the Austrian State Printing Office, the Indonesian nationalist authorities ordered the new stamps inscribed with “ R e p u b l i k Indonesia.” The commemorative stamp issued on the 5th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence in 1950 featured the Garuda Pancasila, the national emblem of Indonesia. No longer was a stamp just proof of payment of postage costs, but was made to perform a variety of missions and functions from five year plans and empowerment of women to the scout movement and anti-mosquito campaigns. A peculiarity of Indonesia’s postal history is the use of overprinted stamps. Captured stocks of Netherlands East Indies stamps were overprinted by Japanese administrative machine imprints on different islands. When the war for independence started, the Dutch set up military blockades that hindered the coordination of stamp issues, so old Dutch Indies stamps were overprinted with republican images across republican-controlled territories. Ironically, some early stamps even bore pre-war Netherlands East Indies postmarks. These

hybrid stamps, which bear the scars of wars, rebellions and annexations, often evade the radar of philatelists and do not even appear in specialized catalogues of the original stamp issuing entities. Historic figures from Indonesia’s formative years - R.A. Kartini, General Soedirman, M. H. Thamrin, Sultan Hassanudin and Agus Salim - are reissued again and again. During the Suharto era, which lasted over 30 years, the president’s image was ubiquitous on series after series of stamp in whole ranges of stamp values, just as Sukarno’s visage was popular on stamps 30 plus years earlier. Indonesian stamps that mark unique historical occasions include whole series that commemorate political entities that never came to fruition. During this early tumultuous period, when the archipelago was shaken by internal separatist revolt, saw the issuance of stamps by self-proclaimed breakaway regions of the former Netherlands Indies that tried to form their own alternative governments, but were put down by the central government troops. These include the Pemerintah Revolusioner Republik Indonesia (PRRI) in Sumatra, the Republik Indonesia Serikat (RIS) and the Republic Maluku Selatan (RMS). A number of rudimentary yet dignified old stamps commemorating the founding of the republic picture symbols of sovereignty and famous historical events in the country’s early formative years such as the Battle of Surabaya on November 19th, 1945. Amazingly, early Indonesian nationalist leaders idolized America’s founding fathers. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson are pictured alongside early Indonesian statesmen. Nationalist heroes who fought against the Dutch are often the subject of stamps: in 1999, the Moluccan freedom fighter Martha Christina Tiahahu. The fourth Governor of Irian Barat Frans Kaisiepo (1921-1979) was the first to propose the name Irian for the new province. During the the regime of Sukarno, the Bandung Conference in April 1955 between 29 newly independent Asian and African states, was an important step in the global non-aligned movement, representing one-quarter of the Earth’s land surface with a total population of 1.5 billion people. To show the first president’s solidarity with other third-world countries where the oppressed masses live, Sukarno poses with Cuba’s Fidel Castro and North

by Bill Dalton Korea’s founder Kim Il Sung. Stamps issued during Sukarno’s violent Konfrontasi campaign (1963-1966) with East Malaya on the border between Kalimantan and North Borneo, are even rare among philatelists specializing in Malaysia. Though there’s no Inverted Jenny (the famous upside down airplane of U.S. postal history) in Indonesian philately, these come the closest. Interestingly, these militarized stamps carry two different overprints from two different foreign countries – Japan and Malaya.

The all-important preservation of Indonesian national unity and the ongoing existence of this impossibly fragmented and diverse country is a recurrent theme of the nation’s stamps. Though provincial stamps may highlight events, cultures and products – the Pasola jousting match of Sumba or the distinctive traditional dwellings of Central Kalimantan - the issuance of regional stamps reinforce and propagate national unity.

Kalimantan Tengah

After Dutch New Guinea was wrested away from the colonialists and incorporated into Indonesia in 1963, regular Indonesian postage stamps were overprinted with “Irian Barat” and stamps were issued that commemorated Indonesian parachute landings and the Battle of the 1962 Arafura Sea. Another stamp issued after the annexation shows two Indonesian flags planted at both ends of this sprawling 3200-km-long 17,000-plus island archipelago, marking the outer boundaries exemplified in the national motto “Dari Sabang ke Merauke” (From Sabang to Merauke) that epitomizes the overriding obsession that Indonesians have for their territorial sovereignty.

UBUD NEWS BY

WAYAN JEN

YOU, YES YOU, CAN HELP Many people want to help, but for whatever reason can’t get physically get to Bali, or aren’t in a position to work effectively here. (I am hobbling around waiting for a knee replacement, and frustrated, aware that I would be absolutely useless in a disaster zone at the moment). Others are far away, and would love to do something, but money is tight.

C/BT/G-15 March 17

PREPARING FOR THE BLAST As I write this, we’re still waiting for Mount Agung to blow his stack, and all our Balinese neighbours are praying in their temples that he won’t, or at least that he’ll be gentle with the island. Despite those prayers, the eruption may have already happened by the time you read this. All around us, we’re seeing what often happens when disaster threatens; people are pulling together. No one knows exactly what’s going to happen, but we’re helping each other get ready. Many long-term Ubud expats remember the first Bali bomb – 15 years ago this month. They remember hearing the first news, packing up their cars and vans, and heading on south to search for survivors and help the recovery. Now they are stocking up on supplies of food and water, trying to figure out how to protect furniture and belongings in homes without walls, and making sure that there are enough good quality masks for ourselves and the Balinese families we care for. Yayasan Bumi Sehat, Kopernik and the IDEP Foundation, all based in Ubud, are extraordinary non-profits pulling together a wealth of expertise in working with disaster. They are basing their teams at Kopernik, and helping to coordinate support for the thousands of displaced people who’ve been evacuated from the anticipated path of the lava. Ibu Robin Lim is, of course, trying to work out where the pregnant women are, and how to ensure they have safe deliveries in the midst of all this trauma. Donations are distributed as fast as they arrive; food, simple cookers, water filter systems, and basic household supplies for the hundreds of unofficial and government evacuation camps set up around the mountain. (To donate: Bank Mandiri Branch: KCP Ubud 14510, Account Name: Yayasan Kopernik, Account No: 145-00-1804889-8.)

MT AGUNG’S FARMERS

C/NV/U-21 June 17

But look, all of us can help. Through the power of the internet, the mobile phone and call me old fashioned having actual conversations, we can all share our concern about the drama that’s unfolding in Bali at the moment. Tell the true story, which you can glean through any one of the organisations mentioned in this column and encourage those you know to donate in some way, to one of them. If each of us talks passionately to three people who love Bali, and encourage each of them to do the same, we’ll make a huge difference. And for those who have money to donate, any one of the individuals and organisations mentioned here will safely put that money to work.

When the situation in Bali returns to normal, Rio’s “News from Under the Volcano” reporting will add a whole chapter to Swadaya, the inspirational Pak Made (Kadek) TV series he is currently co-producing, to put Gunata, co-founder the spotlight on self-empowerment at grassroots of the BaliSpirit group, level around the whole of Indonesia. is working to ensure that the farmers have Rio Helmi and partner Joe Yaggi are passionate livelihoods to return visual communicators and passionate about to. Since the start of the evacuations, Pak Made and the Bali Regreen team have worked tirelessly to move the animals from those villages off Mt Agung. This is vital work. Many farmers have been persuaded by profiteers to sell their cows worth up to 15 million rupiah for two million (that’s $1,500 versus $200), because they don’t have any money for basic supplies that they need for the evacuation camps. But others have left their animals behind, or have no place to put them. Pak Made’s team is fostering livestock on two hectares of land that’s been made available for use during the evacuation, but he says there are more than 800 cows, pigs and goats still in the danger area, “and I know there are more from other banjars that need to be removed”. Swadaya will be a 13 x 30min cultural adventure television series giving Indonesians, and people While there seems to be enough land to keep the animals at the moment, around the world, an opportunity to explore they need funds for fodder and animal care. 25 Dr. Hendry Luis: AIDS Prevention in Bali Dr. Hendry Luis was born and grew up in Medan, North Sumatra. He attended Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta where he graduated in 2008 with a degree in medicine and a specialization in STDs and HIV. His first job was at Bhakti Ibu Mother and Children Hospital in Yogyakarta. In 2009, Dr. Hendry moved to Bali and worked at the Anggrek Clinic in Ubud and Kimia Farma Clinic in Sanur. In 2015, he joined the staff at the nonprofit Bali Peduli foundation. Dr. Hendry is currently the Executive Director of that organization, which is tasked with the vital job of preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS in Bali. What inspired you to take up the cause of combating AIDS? Indonesia is one of the few countries in the world that report a steadily rising number of new HIV infections. Bali is ranked as having the 5th highest HIV burden in the nation. Young people are particularly affected. Obviously, these facts are very alarming and were the main reason behind my wanting to become involved in HIV/AIDS work. What is Bali Peduli’s mission? To provide free and early HIV testing and treatment in order to save lives and prevent the spread of HIV in Bali. We are also committed to providing correct information about HIV to the public in order to address the stigma of HIV infection and AIDS. Knowledge and education are powerful tools to prevent both HIV infections and in fighting social prejudice against these diseases. When was Bali Peduli established? Bali Peduli was formed in 2011 by a group of concerned Bali residents under the guidance of Dr. Steve Wignall. He is an HIV physician and clinical researcher; National Policy Advisor for M2M HIV policy to the Indonesian National AIDS Commission and Senior Medical Advisor to the Clinton Foundation’s efforts to increase access to treatment for HIV+ people in the Indonesian province of Papua. Yayasan Bali Peduli received its final legal status as a charity from the government of Indonesia in 2013. How does Bali Peduli get funding? We are struggling with funding for our clinic services and our outreach and educational programs. We continue to apply for local and overseas grants. We have had a few small successful fund raising events but we hope to find longer term support from local donors. Is the fight against AIDS in Indonesia as vigorous and as successful as it is in other S.E. Asian countries? Indonesia is implementing UNAIDS strategies to combat HIV/AIDS, the 90-90-90, an ambitious treatment target to help end the AIDS epidemic. We hope that by 2020, 90% of all people living with HIV will know their HIV status. By 2020, 90% of all people with diagnosed HIV infection will receive sustained antiretroviral therapy. Also by that year, 90% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy will have viral suppression. Despite the effective strategy, the HIV epidemic in Indonesia is among the fastest growing in Asia. How is HIV infection mostly transmitted in Indonesia?

Foundation, Kerti Praja Foundation, Gaya Dewa Foundation, Bali Rainbow Community, Rotary, BIWA, Bali Kids and Bali Children Project. The Bali Health Authority, under the central government’s Ministry of Health, also supports Bali Peduli by providing HIV-antiretroviral medicines, testing reagents, condoms and lubricants. Who is eligible for Bali Peduli services? Anyone who is at risk of HIV and STIs who wants to be tested. Also anyone who is HIV+ and wants to start treatment. We also welcome anyone who needs information, care and support related to their own HIV status or that of a loved one. We are available to those who need advocacy assistance and intervention help with implicated stakeholders, including healthcare providers, partner organizations and national and regional networks. Our doors are open to anyone who needs help with HIV! Are the services and tests at your two clinics free?

NEED

INTERNET ACCESS ???

It’s still stigma towards people living with HIV-AIDS. Simply put, ignorance of HIV transmission and treatment leads to stigma. The fact is that HIV is very hard to transmit and with adherence to medicine people can live long and productive lives with AIDS. Medicine is available and accessible at no cost or at affordable cost in government hospitals and some private clinics. Our society and each community need to be informed about these facts.

For lease !! Internet with hotspot / Wi-Fi Cheap!! Guarantee money back! These machines ready to use & very simple, no need grid antenna, tower, phone cable, etc. Suitable for small office / home office, NetCafe, restaurant, villa, hotel, trading online, ticketing online, etc

How can one help?

Call: 081 337 400 999, 089 722 85 777

We encourage volunteers to work in our various programs and participate in our educational efforts and fund raising activities. We also need help in supporting our capacity building and sustainability and in our campaign to end the stigma of HIV and AIDS.

The means of HIV transmission has shifted from transmission through drug injecting to sexual transmission. The majority of HIV infections are concentrated in five key high risk groups: 1) people who inject drugs (PWIDs); 2) female sex workers (FSWs); 3) men who have sex with men (MSM) and male sex workers; 4) transgenders; and 5) clients of sex workers. Besides HIV, STIs (sexually transmitted infections) rates are also very high and ever increasing in those key populations.

Where can one learn more about Bali Peduli?

Does Bali Peduli work in partnership with other organizations? In fully addressing the complexity of HIV and sexual health issues, Bali Peduli has had to partner with several closely related organizations who have similar missions. Among those who work closely with us are Spirit Paramacita

Update

Bebek Bengil put the Ubud village dish of Crispy Duck on the world stage. This Padang Tegal restaurant, with its small bales and large wantilans, all with rice paddy views, was an instant hit with both domestic and international tourists to Bali. So much so that many other local restaurants added ‘Bebek’ to their name. Crispy Duck [pictured] can be rather dry but at Bebek Bengil they do it right so it is still fleshy. However they also do another local dish, the real classic dish of Bali, Bebek Betutu. It features on many menus in Bali but far too often it is just a kitchen creation. Here they follow the traditional village method of preparation. The bird is stuffed with Balinese herbs and spices, including shallots, garlic, lemongrass, candle nuts, ginger, turmeric, lime leaves, kencur root, and many others, then wrapped in beetle nut leaf, and steamed over embers for a long extended cooking period. The resultant flavour of the now yellow coloured and amazingly tender flesh is unique and one of the great delights of dining in Bali. Due to this long cooking cycle only a full bird is served and it must be ordered for a minimum of 2 persons at the table. It must be ordered one day in advance to facilitate the detailed preparation. The chicken version of this dish, Ayam Betutu, is also available but with the same ordering restrictions. Whilst the original site has been constantly extended to meet the ever-growing demand, another 8 locations now exist as Bebek Bengil outlets, in total four in Bali and five in Jakarta.

Moringa is confusing. From the outside it appears to be offering Japanese cuisine, judging by the large wall mural. In fact this stylish air-conditioned restaurant on Jln. Dew Sri, Legian, offers a range of Asian and International dishes. Start with a Smoked Fish [cakalang] Salad, with lettuce, egg yolk, avocado cream and raisin vinaigrette, a bowl of Quinoa or Roasted Pumpkin with beetroot and hazelnut oil. The bowls are great as anytime snacks; Oxtail with curry pasta and omelette on fried rice or the intense Gyo Tan Don, imported marinated beef tongue with leek, fried garlic and chilli on rice. International dishes with a twist include a Burger on brioche, Roasted Fish with paprika and spaghetti, imported Onglet Beef and an old fashioned Coq au Vin; chicken cooked with red wine. Exotic desserts include a cream cheese soufflé and a Klappertart, made from young coconut, butter. egg yolk, milk and cinnamon topped with a meringue.

Depresso is a very strange name for a coffee shop! Do you go for a coffee when you are depressed or does having a coffee make you that way? Kedai Depresso is the latest in a seemingly never ending line of coffee houses on Jln. Hayam Wuruk in Renon. They open and they close, on a regular basis but at least this one seems very busy. There is a monster list of different coffees [doppio, ristretto, lungo, kopi tubruk?] as well as all of the usual ones, plus many different juices. The food is cheap, snacks [chicken fingers or wings, bitter ballen, churos] and rice bowls [chicken or fish] predominate. The Crispy Chicken, similar to nuggets, is very popular and comes with a long list of different sauces.

DSM is also new on Jln Hayam Wuruk. A smart design, air-con rooms inside, a smokers terrace at the front and an unusual outdoor cooking area all seems to suggest that this one is here to stay. Although the over-stylised name script on the front sign looks more like ‘1715 M’ than DSM, perhaps a little too clever? They offer very cheap food that is interesting as well. Snacks include Coriander Meatballs, Turmeric Samosas and Ginger Chicken Wings. Pasta can be a Rendang Bolognese, Pizza with jerk beef. Rice Bowls can be Chicken & Ginger, Turmeric Fish or Chicken Sambal Matah. The 24 hour marinated Jerk Steaks are the main feature, tenderloin, chicken and fish, all served with potato and cheese balls.

Warung Cahaya is a place that you find, just by accident! On a side street off Jln. Nakula, Legian [Jln. Dewi Ratih] it is small, rather stylish and seemingly always busy! Crispy Pork Sambal Matah is their main claim to fame, and every day people queue for it, and every day it is always sold out early. At Rp. 32,000 it is the most expensive item on the menu. There is also a chicken version. The other dishes are all rather Indonesian Chinese; rice, noodles, chicken & pork with garlic butter, sweet and sour, etc. No one seems to mind the long wait for service and the queues they just all keep on coming back! Ketupat was once one of Bali’s leading restaurants. At its original location behind the Jonathan furniture showroom on Jln Legian it was a virtual oasis surrounded by mediocre restaurants, back in the 90’s. You walked down what appeared to be a private driveway and there was a two story building with small romantic balconies on the 2nd floor that jutted out over the large swimming pool. Facing were a line of tables, pool-side, and behind a series of small bales. A special place serving an interesting array of Indonesian cuisine, many of which were way out of the ordinary such as the Quail Eggs, a dish from Irian Jaya. It was a case of busy every night and reservations only every day in the high seasons. A move to a new location many years ago on what was then an empty Jln, Dewi Sri, did not take the sell-out crowds with them. They have now added a street front section in an attempt to attract the passing trade. Inside is similar to the old, small bales facing a pool. C/R/G-16 August 17

QUICK REVIEW

A German Meat Feast! Extrablatt Nakula.

returns

to

Many regular customers were very sad, a few years back, when the little German warung, Extrablatt, closed on Jln. Nakula, There were only 4-5 small tables and a front bench on the terrace but the place was always busy. Guests, often from the Rumah Manis hotel, which was across the road from Extrablatt at that time, had made it their first stop for a hearty meal. Well, Extrablatt is back, bigger and better than ever. A large site it has both an inside and an outdoor garden area as well as a comfortable bar for the serious drinkers. The food served at the new Extrablatt is exactly the same as was served at the old one, and new dishes as well are expected to be added soon including the unique Sauerbraten, a specialty from the Rhine. Start with a big breakfast [served any time]. Standard is just 2 eggs, any which way, with sliced sausage, etc. For me it is the Farmers’ Breakfast. You do not have to be a German farmer to enjoy this one! That German style [thin crisp slices] pan-fried potato are tossed with shards of bacon, slices of smoked sausage, strands of sauerkraut and shredded egg. You just want a snack, but German style? Semmelknodel are bread dumplings with a mushroom sauce. Perhaps a German sausage? Bratwurst, Wiener or Nurnberger, all served with your choice of extras; potato mashed, fried or salad, sauerkraut, bread and mustard. Soups can be Goulash [meat with paprika] or a very healthy Lentil, with sliced sausage added. A variety of salads include potato, sausage and the very European, cucumber salad.

Rinderroulade mit Rotkraut is yet another favourite that they do well at Extrablatt. Thin flattened pieces of beef are rolled around a mix of shredded beef, diced vegetables and bacon, sausage shape, and baked in the oven. They are served with red cabbage, enough reason alone to order this dish.

One of my favourite any-time German dishes is Leberkase. Finely minced corned beef, pork and bacon formed into a loaf and baked in the oven like bread. A thick slice is served with a fried egg on top [pictured] with those German style fried potatoes and fried onion. Excellent, and cheap!

Steaks, hamburgers and roast meats [pork and beef] are also available. They even have a Cordon Bleu. Other pork dishes include a Kassler [smoked pork] with sauerkraut or Pork Neck with onions. From Austria a Wiener Schnitzel made with chicken, large piece of flattened breast coated with breadcrumbs and pan-fried. The space that is now Extrablatt was for a very short tine a Babi Guling restaurant. At Extrablatt they continue to serve Babi Guling and they use real suckling pigs [not more than 20kg] unlike the old full-sized pigs [way past suckling age] often used elsewhere. A rice dish for your Asian friend? Lemon chicken with sesame oil. Desserts are Pancakes; banana, pineapple, ice cream or honey. Hearty meals and every dish on this menu is priced at LESS than Rp.100,000! No wonder it is already very busy even though it has only been open for 4 weeks. I have my old favourite back, I am very happy!

This easy dish has mega flavor. It keeps for several days, making the mushrooms even tastier. You can also use a variety of mushrooms or just your everyday white ones. But I prefer the shitaki with their strong flavor and chewy texture.

Shitaki Mushrooms with Soy Sauce, Garlic and Balsamic Vinegar Serves 2-3

Ingredients - 1/2 kg. fresh shitaki mushrooms or other mushrooms - 1 Tbl. virgin olive oil - 3 Tbl. balsamic vinegar

- 2 Tbl. soy sauce

C/NV/I-19 July 17

- 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped - 1 tsp. fresh thyme, chopped or ½ tsp. dried thyme - salt and pepper to taste - 1 Tbl. chopped chives for garnish Directions: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Clean the mushrooms getting all the grit off of them. Drain and then dry them on paper towels. Remove the stems and discard if they’re tough. If not, cut them in half crosswise. If the mushroom caps are large, halve or quarter them. You want big pieces of mushroom for this dish. In a bowl mix the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper. Beat this with a fork or whisk to make a smooth sauce and then add the mushrooms and toss to coat well. Choose a glass or ceramic oven dish big enough to hold the mushrooms in one layer. Spread the mushrooms over the bottom and bake for 10 minutes. Stir the mushrooms and return to the oven for another 10 minutes. If the sauce starts to burn, turn the heat down to 350. Remove the dish from the oven and let stand for at least 10 minutes before serving these beauties. Allow to come to room temperature before eating. Enjoy your meal!

GUNUNG AGUNG CRISIS....So you want to be a Volunteer? The old lady is rumbling, at least at the writing of this article, that’s all she’s doing so far. However, with her previous eruption and the devastation it caused imprinted clearly on the landscape and historic records of that time, caution has prevailed, and 100,000 villagers evacuated from the high-risk zones. It’s natural that we want to help, and so we should. If everyone did a little bit, then the load would not be left up to a few.

a good thing, but threatens to make you bitter and to overextend you. This insidious need will get met when you say yes and overpromise what you can deliver in order to be liked, please other people, or avoid the perceived consequences of saying no. Community volunteers are also highly susceptible”. How do you know if you have it? If you feel like you never have enough time to complete your work. If you are the one always called on in a pinch, the one to stay late or start early, or the one who people call only when they have a problem. If you get great satisfaction out of being the only one who can solve a particular problem, the one who will drop everything to help. You may have the hero syndrome. It’s perfectly normal to gain recognition and satisfaction from doing some of these things, but when the joy of the recognition quickly fades into resentment, stress or overwhelm, then you’ve become the hero at a great cost.

The Indonesian Government, local & national, as well as countless NGO’s have done an absolutely incredible job of managing this crisis so far, however there are still small pockets of people that have fallen through the cracks. This is where the independent volunteers kick in.

The bottom line is: You are no hero if you steal from yourself to give to everyone else. A true hero does not get his strength by doing good deeds. A true hero knows how to fill her cup and then give some away. We’ll all be better for it and then we can thank you, our hero.

Most well organized NGO’s will have strict guidelines as to who may or may not go to ground zero in these circumstances, and will provide adequate prophylactic medication and information to those on their teams. Here are some guidelines for anyone who may be considering volunteering in the evacuee camps around the Island. Beware the Hero Syndrome! Have you ever noticed when there is a crisis, large or small, certain people come to the fore? They seem to take the reigns with incredible gusto, but often end up in therapy after the dust has settled. What is the “Hero Syndrome”? It is “an subconscious need to be needed, appreciated or valued that disguises itself as

• Typhoid Fever – Single shot • Rabies - full course or booster depending on your status. Don’t forget that most vaccines do not give you full protection until at least one month after the start of the course. No vaccine gives 100% protection (most 70% - 90% efficacy). Insects, particularly mosquitoes, can spread a myriad of diseases such as Malaria, Japanese Encephalitis, and Dengue fever. The best prevention is to avoid being bitten. • Wear long sleeved loose cotton clothes, and apply a personal insect repellant containing DEET 30-40%, every 4 hours. If you are using a sunscreen, apply your insect repellant last. Remember to re-apply your repellant after bathing. • Avoid the use of dark clothing and perfumes/colognes as these all attract mosquitoes. • Spray your room or tent with a good “Knock down” spray, each evening at dusk, and before sleeping. The Volcano Factor Never take Mother Nature’s fury lightly. When she blows, she will really blow. Obviously stay away from no-go zones. A pyroclastic surge (a fluidized mass of turbulent gas and rock fragments) can travel at up to 290 mph (466 Km/h), so no - you can’t out run something like this. Make sure that you kit yourself out. Masks, goggles etc. Google for eruption and post eruption management.

It is the first and foremost golden rule in any first-aid situation (and let’s face it, disaster aid is just a great big first-aid task whether you’re shoveling mud or working in an operating theatre), to look after yourself before you give aid to anyone else. Communicable disease following a natural disaster is the biggest threat to survivors and workers alike. All normal water and sanitation systems shut down, waste and affluent begin to rot and disease carrying insects such as mosquitoes and flies are rife.

C/He/G-11 Oct. 17

If all this sounds too much for you or you have a condition that will not allow you to travel to the intensive post disaster zone, and you still feel that you would like to help contact organizations that are involved and volunteer as a “long distance aide’. There is plenty to do in fields such as administration, accounting, planning and logistics that you can probably do from your own home.

Getting Ready & Protecting Yourself Make sure that you are in good general health. Any one suffering from the following conditions should not go to post-disaster areas. • Those who suffer from chronic disease such as diabetes, epilepsy, moderate to severe asthma. • Immuno-compromised people suffering from diseases such as HIV, chronic blood disorders etc. • Anyone who is considered emotionally or mentally unstable. • Pregnant women Basic Vaccinations recommended for post-disaster areas would be: • Tetanus - full course or booster depending on your status. • Hepatitis A & B - full course or booster depending on your status. The usual recommended course spans a 6 – 12 month period, however fast-track courses can be completed in one month.

32 Mending a Broken Heart

French medicine shows the way.... “You have mild aortic stenosis”, the Hong Kong cardiologist told my wife two years ago. “Nothing to worry about”, he added. “You have critical aortic stenosis” said the Singapore cardiologist in April of this year. “Unless you have a valve replacement immediately you could die at any moment”. My wife, who is a four-time breast cancer survivor, has had more than her fair share of medical challenges and, for the 25 years we have been together I have co-incidentally been writing about health with a staunchly consumerist bent. Writing about medicine from such a standpoint for as long as I have does not make me medically knowledgeable. If anything it makes it very clear that a little knowledge is not just a dangerous thing but can be worse than no knowledge at all. What it has done though, is to give me sufficient insight into the highways and by-ways of Planet Medicine as to fi ll me with awed admiration and anger in equal measure. That is why I have tried as best I can to level the playing field so the consumer - “We the Patient” - has at least some of the information needed to make key choices in a field where we can never expect to be fully in possession of the facts. In 2011 my wife very nearly died from double pneumonia and spent six months in hospital in Hong Kong. Her doctors, mostly capbable men in their way at the top of their profession, were also a self-satisfied and congratulatory clique, who milked the insurance company for every cent they could. The hospital, theoretically non-profit, pretty much played the same game, while the insurance company made our lives a living hell trying to second guess the doctors every step of the way. What had been one of the best and fairest insurance companies in the world had been taken over by a group that embodies all that is bad in the anglo-saxon approach to medical insurance, predictably breaking almost every undertaking they had made upon acquiring the company within two years of acquisition. With compromised lungs any infection threatened and on occasions did turn into pneumonia, my wife lost her medical cover, which was now approaching US$20,000 p.a. A dangerous situation for her to find herself. Fortunate and timely was the advise and aid of the former French Consul in Bali and my wife, who is French and virtually uninsurable, was accepted by the Caisse Francais pour Etrangers (CFE) and obtained medical cover for one sixth the price she had been paying. The CFE is an organisation set up by the French government to provide essential cover for French nationals overseas. There are no exclusions on grounds of age or pre-existing conditions and, with a small top-up, all claims are re-imbursed in full. Compared with anything the private sector can offer expatriates without a carte vitale it is a no-brainer. Other nations would do well to take note. Back in the early 1980s, when my wife had been radiated for an earlier cancer it either was not known, or it was felt not necessary, for doctors to warn patients that their heart and lungs could be damaged and lead to serious problems in years to come. To an extent, such failure to inform and warn, was understandable... back then. Today it is inexcusable. What her Hong Kong doctors had failed to do was to make us aware of the intimate link between heart and lungs. Each of them concentrated on their own speciality as my wife was batted between them while they ran batteries of expensive and often unecessary tests, including a highly invasive, painful and unecessary surgical procedure. This was good business no doubt, but it was lousy doctoring. Yes, they saved her life... but only just. It should never have been put at risk in the first place, with more timely intervention. “Time to go back to the Motherland” said the genial Singaporean cardiologist at Raffles Centre. “You have no time to lose. If I needed a valve replacement I’d go to France for the TAVI. They invented it”. TAVI stands for Transcathetarisation Aortic Valve Implacement, a highly complex procedure introduced in 2002, which allows a team of doctors to work on the heart while

it is still beating by entering the vascular system via an artery in the groin. It remains a cutting edge procedure, which avoids the trauma of open heart surgery or SAVR, graphically referred to in the trade as “cracking the chest”, and which cannot be performed upon the aged and infirm for whom the need for a new heart valve remains a death sentence. Though exceedingly intricate TAVI is relatively cheap and getting cheaper as the procedure becomes more widely adopted. It is quick and the patient can be out of hospital and in the monitoring phase within a week. Compared with the lengthy hospitalisation and crippling costs of SAVR, disturbingly being performed upon more young middle-aged people than ever, such interest is understandable. So is the opposition to it - justified or not. It should be noted that TAVI is fast- developing and intricate fi eld and anyone contemplating it should take considerable care as to the provenance of the team performing it.

C/He/I-01 Feb 17

Through the connections of a friend, who himself had been a prominent heart specialist, we obtained an introduction to one of the leading TAVI specialists who leads a team at a hospital in Massy, just South of Paris, and who - subject to tests, agreed to perform the procedure. There was just one snag though... French bureaucracy. The CFE may be brilliant, but rules are rules. Life-threatening or not, this procedure would not be covered before three months had elapsed since my wife had been accepted. This was a serious worry since the symptoms clearly indicated her condition was critical. We got to Paris in the nick of time, Her aortic valve was over 90% occluded and she could barely walk more than a few yards. The procedure took place in early September and was successful, taking a little over one hour. However, as can happen with atrial fibrillatio in TAVI, my wife needed to have a pacemaker inserted. A second routine operation performed by another surgical team a two days later but which did not go altogether smoothly.

C/He/U-10 May 17

The hospital in Massy is actually privately owned, by an Australian group called Ramsay. In France , even private hospitals have public obligations to the state. Clearly Ramsay expect that by taking over a hospital with a top TAVI team in situ they will profit accordingly. However, apart from the TAVI team, which is superb, this institution seems to be at odds with itself. Clearly the expense of meeting their obligations to the State as well as their shareholders is proving a source of stress for the Ramsay folk... and it shows. My wife is currently undergoing her rehabilitiation in a cardiac recovery unit at Bligny, a massive pre-Great War convalescent institution established to treat consumptives with the aid of Rothschild money set in magnificent forests just 20km further South from the hospital in Massy. Here the attitude and the enviromnent could hardly be more conducive to healing and my wife is making good progress, though there remains some way to go for the heart to regain rythym and strength. The French public health system is impressive. They still take the concept of ”citoyen” seriously, to an extent that some Anglo-Saxons might take as an unwarrantable imposition upon their right to pursue profit. For the French there are obligations and rights. To me, the right of every citizen to a high standard of medical care, whatever their financial situation, seems to me to be the essence of civilized society. Broadly speaking the French have got it right.

34 The Misperceptions of Positive Judgment I was always told as a child to think the best of people, because people are at their core good. It became my modus operandi to live this way and as I grew older I never questioned that this way of being would actually be at the root cause of my perpetual state of confusion and disappointment with many of the people I got close to. Maybe some of you who are reading this are too young to remember the show: ‘Leave it to Beaver’? I remember watching this show when I was a very little girl and thinking, “Wow, they are the perfect family.” This sitcom defines the wholesomeness of 1950s and 1960s TV, where the dad Ward Cleaver, always gets home in time for dinner; the mom June, with her neatly styled hair, cleans the house wearing a perfectly ironed dress and pearl earrings, and the kids Wally and the Beav always realize the errors of their ways and promise to do better next time. This sitcom gave everyone a peak into the world of the ‘good people’ and created hope in all those who faithfully watched episode after episode, that no matter how challenging their own relationships with friends or family might be, they just had to remember that ultimately everyone is good at heart.

This positive judgment of goodness or being good no matter what was further imprinted into my consciousness from an early age when I dutifully went to church with my family. I remember the minister saying during one Sunday sermon, “Do unto others as you would do unto yourself.” So between ‘Leave it to Beaver’ and the Sunday sermons, I was primed to be a good girl who always expected others to be good too. I had learned that good girls don’t complain, have good table manners and always say please and thank you. It takes a lot of energy to always be good. I kept working hard at it though, because I wanted my mother and father’s approval. In my teen years I was accused of being quite naïve. People often said, “You only see the best in everyone. It’s like you have blinders on and can’t see the whole person for who s/ he really is.”How true those words were but I didn’t get it then. I kept trusting people and believing that they were good. I even sometimes confided in my closest friends about my deepest secrets believing that they would never betray me. Inevitably, those secrets were told to other classmates who told other classmates until my whole class knew everything about me. I heard people whispering and giggling as they walked down the hall past me. I was totally devastated and confounded. I couldn’t understand why people were acting like this. I thought people were meant to be good at heart but I was now experiencing something totally different – how some people enjoyed hurting and humiliating others. None of this made sense to me so I chose not to believe that some people really were unkind. C/He/G-29 March 17

In my 30’s I moved to Asia and lived in South Korea for a year teaching English as a foreign language. I was excited by the idea of living abroad and discovering a new culture. Once again I headed into this situation with positivity and a strong belief that everyone is good. I had my blinders on and didn’t see or expect anything bad to happen. Why would it? I knew I was a good person and treated other people with respect, so of course I would be treated in kind. Weeks passed and I started to realize that the woman I was co-teaching with, Mrs. Kwan, had never asked me to have lunch together or even go out for dinner. I shrugged it off thinking that she must be busy. Then one day she came to me and apologized saying, “I’m sorry, but I can’t invite you to my home for dinner, because my mother in law doesn’t like foreigners.” I was confused as I had never encountered blatant racism before. She smiled a false smile and walked away. I could feel my heart drop as I realized that no one at the school had ever bothered to befriend me except one woman, Mrs. Anh. How had I not seen the truth? I realized in that moment that my modus operandi was not working! I had spent over 30 years of my life always believing that everyone is good at their core and in total denial that people could be bad too. This denial is why I was continuously getting disappointed and hurt by others. I finally understood that I had to take off my blinders and really see all of who people were – the good, the bad and the ugly. I realized that I was pretty much alone in this small Korean village where foreigners were just tolerated but not really welcome. After my one year contract was up, I moved to Indonesia and began a new life. I have been living on this glorious island of Bali since 2002. While I still sometimes slip into positive judgments of people and choose not to see their bad sides, I now understand the importance of not getting caught in the illusory web of ‘beautiful, amazing, wonderful and fabulous’. While those qualities certainly exist in us all, there is also the flip side which is not so lovely, but it’s real. By being willing to acknowledge and receive all of who someone really is, we are also receiving all of who WE are. Yes, it’s a bit tricky as sometimes we can tilt too far one way and become cynical. The key is being aware of everything that person is and being in allowance of all of it. Good and bad are both judgments anyway. If we don’t align and agree or resist and react to either, we can live a truly joyful life.

Local News 70,000 Balinese volcano evacuees had no need to leave, Indonesia says More than half the 140,000 Balinese who have fled to shelters from a rumbling volcano had no need to evacuate and should return home, Indonesian authorities have said. Unnerved by daily tremors, and uncertain about the exact border of the danger zone – between 9-12km from the summit of Mt Agung - tens of thousands more than necessary have fled. “Only people from 27 villages must evacuate,” said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, from Indonesia’s national disaster mitigation agency, referring to the communities inside the unsafe zone. “The rest can go home. They can either go home independently or with the help of the government.” As Mt Agung continues to rumble, several Balinese priests have courted

Once tremors detected, Bali volcano can erupt within hours: Volcanologist Prince Tjokorda Raka Putra can feel a message is coming from the god of Bali’s sacred mountain, Gunung Agung. The last time he saw one was 54 years ago, on Feb 19, 1963. As witnessed by him and the people in Bali, the message was delivered with thick smoke, rocks and lava flying out of Mont Agung’s pinnacle. “It’s like an atomic bomb atop the mountain’s peak. The plume rose very high, a massive amount of grey smoke,” the prince told Channel NewsAsia inside his palace in Klungkung. “There were dust and sandstorms every day. Rocks rained down from the sky and ashes fell all over Bali.” The eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 is one of the largest and most destructive in Indonesian history. It lasted for nearly a year, devastated countless villages and killed more than 1,100 people. Fast forward to September 2017, the same thing could happen again, and probably soon. Volcanologists said it could only be a matter of hours, days or longer for the sacred mountain to blow. Many signs are pointing towards an irregular magma movement inside the volcanic edifice, as the hot fluid tries to reach the surface. Since its previous eruption until recently, Mount Agung had reported zero volcanic earthquakes. Last week, however, more than 700 incidents were detected in one day, Bali’s rumbling volcano spurs more evacuations and travel warnings As Bali’s Mt Agung volcano continues to rumble ominously, the locals are blaming tourists for angering the ancient mountain. A local priest reportedly said Mount Agung is wrathful because “bule” (white people) had sex and menstruated on the mountain. “The climbers did that,” he said. Despite the warnings, Australian tourists on holiday in Bali say they are not worried and not trying to rush home to beat an eruption. But experts still cannot predict when the mountain will erupt. It is more than 70km from the tourist hot spots of Kuta and Seminyak. While many Australian tourists remain unaffected by the impending eruption, some have spoken of being woken in the middle of the night to evacuate their hotels. Rory Eastick from Newcastle said he was woken by his Indonesian brother-in-law at 11.30pm and told to leave his hotel in Tulamben, on the northeast coast of Bali, immediately. “It was quite a worrying moment because it was at that time we realised everyone in our hotel had already left,” he said. “Family staying in another hotel were kicked out and made to find their own way to safety.” Monique Correia from Perth said she was also told to pack her things and evacuate. “The lady from my hotel has just told us to all pack our stuff and evacuate and drive back to Kuta now,” she said. However, other tourists are feeling more relaxed about the situation. David and Kellie Smith, from Redhead in Newcastle, are on their first Bali holiday with their two daughters and say they are not concerned by the possibility of Mt Agung erupting. They have spoken a lot with locals who say the most concern rests with the villagers closest to the mountain. Like many Australians spoken to yesterday by News Corp Australia at Seminyak and Legian, their travel insurance appears sound, should the

controversy in recent days after they hiked to Agung’s crater. One priest, Mangku Mokoh, posted photos and a video from the volcano’s steaming peak, footage of which has gone viral on social media. Responses showed some were in awe, applauding his audacity, while others criticised Mangku Mokoh for his recklessness and potentially encouraging others to do the same. The alert status of Mt Agung was raised to the maximum danger level of 4 after its seismic activity rose to the highest ever recorded levels. The last time Agung erupted was more than half a century ago in 1963, when it killed more than 1,000 people. Fearing it will again blow, tens of thousands of Balinese have sought shelter in village halls and temples, some sleeping on rough concrete with limited sanitation facilities. By day they venture into the danger zone, to check their on their livestock and homes. Each morning for the past week, mountain guide Komang Sabda, 34, has returned to his home 1.5km from Agung’s summit, which is the highest point on Bali. “I have to go check on my flowers,” he says, reaching for his phone to show a photo of his small field of golden marigolds. Unable to lead hikers up the mountain now, Sabda hopes he will still be able to make money by harvesting his marigolds, the petals of which are used in canang – daily Balinese offerings made from banana leaves.

with the strongest magnitude measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale. Such frequency and force is alarming for seismologists, as it has taken much less for other volcanoes to erupt. “More than 700 earthquakes per day is already very high. If the number is increasing, it will create continued tremors. Then it may be a matter of hours before the eruption,” said Dr Devy Kamil Syahbana from the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation. Besides the frequent quakes, his team has also detected the inflation of Mount Agung. They have also recorded significant changes on the crater’s surface. Hotspots are spreading everywhere, while cracks on the summit continue to emit white steam clouds, which have been intensifying over time. Citing the accumulative magnitudes of the earthquakes, Dr Syahbana said the volume of Mount Agung’s intruded magma - the cause of volcanic earthquakes - is estimated at 15 million cubic metres (m3). Statistics show that if the volume of such magma goes above 6 million m3, an eruption is likely. “Global statistics say that’s 90 per cent of volcanoes. We still have 10 per cent chance that we won’t have the eruption. Of course, we hope for the best. But we need to prepare for the worst,” Dr Syahbana said. Next to him, a seismograph was picking up a lot of vibration on Mount Agung. The rolling paper was full of many long, black lines indicating significant magnitudes. “Before, it was just a straight line every day.” More than 75,000 people have been evacuated from hazard-prone areas within a 12km radius of the active volcano. The decision was made based on the size of the affected area more than half a century ago. Between 1963 and 1964, about 280 million m3 of magma was ejected from Mount Agung. The lava flew as far as 14km to the north and 12km to the south, as well as southeast. Based on the government’s assessment, it is likely that if the eruption takes place volcano erupt. “We are all covered. I have spoken to our travel agent and she said as soon as she gets notice (of any problems) she will email me,” Ms Smith said, adding that they monitor social media for developments. “If the locals are not panicked, we are not too worried at the moment.” The family arrived in Bali on September 16 just as Mt Agung was rumbling into action and the next day took a day trip, with a guide and driver, to Amed where they had spectacular views of Mt Agung before it was on alert. “Honestly, we haven’t been too worried. We have had people ringing us (to find out what’s going on) but from what I understand there is not too much drama,” Mr Smith said. They are due to return home on Saturday. Melbourne man Brett McKenzie was at the Double Six beach yesterday while his three sons, twins Ryan and Jackson, 13, and Bailey, 11, had a surf lesson. The family arrived in Bali on Sunday and Mr McKenzie said he and his wife had no reservations about coming, knowing that Mt Agung was stirring. He said they had thoroughly checked the DFAT Smartraveller advice before coming and had travel insurance. “It is one of those things, it is a force of nature, unavoidable. If we have to stay longer (if the airport closes) we have to stay longer,” Mr McKenzie said. It was about taking personal responsibility and being aware of risks, taking note of the expert warnings. “Our concern is more with the local Balinese people. These people are subsistence farmers ... in the villages and nearby surroundings and their livelihoods are at risk. That’s where our concern comes from, more than ourselves,” he said. Mr McKenzie said due care was needed to avoid any risks, adding it was important to take responsibility for yourself, should Mt Agung erupt. “I think one thing we are aware of is the unpredictability of the volcano,” he said. He said while his family would be interested to see the volcano itself, they were concerned not to be traipsing up the mountain just to take a look with massive relief efforts underway. “You don’t want thousands of people running up there making it difficult for them,” he said. Throughout the day on Wednesday hundreds of earthquakes were recorded within Mt Agung. Between 6am and 12 noon, there were 521 earthquakes. Bali’s Governor Made Pastika has urged Australians that Bali is safe despite the looming eruption of Mt Agung volcano. [News Corp Australia September 28, 2017]

No one can say for certain if and when Mt Agung might erupt but volcanologists say the risk has not gone down. “Agung is still showing high numbers of seismicity and yesterday we had 794 volcanic earthquakes,” said Devy Kamil Syahbana, a seismologist from Indonesia’s volcanology centre, on Sunday. “It is not accelerating but it is on the same level. For example, three days ago you had 800 events [earthquakes] and then now you have almost 800 events. It is zero acceleration but still a high level of seismicity.” The amplitude of the quakes has decreased but Syahbana said that did not indicate the fracturing or movement of magma within Mt Agung had dropped. At the same time the number of shallow volcanic tremors has risen. In the event of an eruption, Indonesian authorities have prepared 10 regional airports should flights need to be diverted from Bali’s Ngurah international airport due to volcanic ash flows. The national disaster mitigation agency has installed six warning sirens that will be heard for two kilometres in the event of an eruption, and warning signs at 54 points across the danger zone telling people not to enter. The agency has also warned local communities of the possible dangers, including hot clouds with a temperature of between 600-800C that might speed down Agung’s slope at up to 300kmh in the event of an eruption. [The Guardian October 1, 2017]

again, it would be small at first. “But it’s possible also that it’d be followed by harder eruptions,” Dr Syahbana added. While the government is busy with its mitigation plan, many residents in Hindu-majority Bali prepare themselves for the uncertain future with faith in the god of Agung. “We can only keep praying for strength to face what the god wills,” said Gusti Mangku Paruna Kubayan, a priest from Bali’s “Mother of Temple”, Pura Besakih. The temple complex was badly damaged by the 1963 eruption, given its location on the southwestern slope of Mount Agung. Based on Prince Tjokorda Raka’s account, the second eruption that year was bigger than the first, and destroyed all the shrines in the complex. Still, the magnitude of destruction in the 60s did not stop the priest from performing his act of faith. The 52-year-old insisted on re-entering the sacred complex last week to perform a ritual, which he believes matters more than being sheltered inside Banjar Pekandelan Klod Temple with other evacuees. Like many Balinese, the priest believes the god of Agung will let him know when the eruption is imminent. “The temple has three sacred holes,” he said. “One of them is believed to connect with the crater of Mount Agung. In 1963, smoke appeared there a few days before the eruption.” He added: “Based on my faith, there will be a sign from the god if Mount Agung erupts.” For volcanologists such as Dr Syahbana, however, there have already been plenty of signs. “The probability of eruption at the moment is high. Still, this probability may change at any time. It depends on what the volcano wants.”. [Channel NewsAsia October 2, 2017] ‘It’s been 100 days’: Bali escapee Shaun Davidson Bali escapee Shaun Davidson is celebrating 100 days on the run from police. The Australian-born former inmate broke out of notorious Kerobokan prison in June with only six-weeks left on his sentence, meaning he would have walked free from jail now if he had served out his time. But he has since continued to taunt police while on the run by posting updated to Facebook. ‘Just realised iits (sic) been 100 days,’ Davidson wrote on Facebook, adding a number of clapping emojis. And it seems he has the support from a number of followers on social media. ‘Keep going mate love from Holland,’ wrote one Facebook user. ‘You must be missing your family, you’re strong man… keep doing what you’re doing,’ said another. After tunneling out of the overcrowded prison on June 19 with three other inmates, only Davidson and one other inmate remain on the run after two escapees were caught days after. The fugitive has continued to taunt police by creating his own wanted posters offering a reward, proving popular with his thousands of followers. His fans have previously taken to Facebook to tell Davidson he is ‘living the dream’ and that he is ‘so entertaining’ they ‘hope it lasts forever’. Since escaping jail Davidson has claimed to be everywhere from The Netherlands to Thailand and a cafe in the Caribbean. ‘Dinner time I’m starving,’ he wrote alongside the check-in at Cafe Luna Barbados. [Daily Mail September 28, 2017] Three volcanoes around Pacific Rim on brink of major eruptions Volcanoes in Mexico, Indonesia and Vanuatu are at varying levels of imminent eruptions having belched smoke, ash and red-hot rocks, covering villages in ash and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate. Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City was the latest to show life on Wednesday (Thursday NZ Time), heightening the anxieties of Mexicans still shaken by last week’s powerful earthquake that killed hundreds and severely damaged thousands of buildings. Meanwhile, the exodus from a menacing volcano on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali is nearing 100,000 people, a disaster official said on Wednesday, as hundreds of tremors from the mountain were recorded daily. In the Pacific island of Vanuatu, a rumbling, belching volcano that’s threatening to blow has forced more than 7000 people to flee their homes by Wednesday. [Stuff September 28, 2017]

37 DISASTER PREPAREDNESS FOR YOUR PET The possibly imminent eruption of Mount Agung in Karangasem regency has created thousands of refugees and it is remarkable how Bali’s residents have all pulled together in solidarity for locals affected by this geological event. In addition to the humanitarian effort, Bali’s main animal welfare groups have been working flat out to rescue and feed animals that were abandoned by their owners during the evacuation. Bali is exceptionally lucky to have the amazing folks from Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), Bali Adoption Rehabilitation Centre (BARC), Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN), Bali Rumah Singgah Satwa (BRSS) and others helping our four-legged friends who have been left behind. They are in urgent need of donations especially dog & cat food, if any readers would like to donate a bag it can be dropped at Sunset Vet Kuta or Sunset Vet Ubud who will make sure it gets to the animals in need. For those of us thinking how to best prepare ourselves for future natural disasters, there are some things to consider with regard to your pet. Vaccinations Make sure your pet is up to date with his/her vaccinations. Your veterinarian usually informs you when the annual booster is due, but this is not guaranteed to happen. Rabies vaccination is essential in addition to the standard multivaccine. Identification Make sure your pet can be identified in the event that you are separated. A microchip or tattoo are important forms of identification but this should optimally be combined with a collar tag of some sort featuring your phone number (engraved tags in multiple colors available from Sunset Vet!), as not all rescue personnel will be equipped with microchip scanners or quick access to tattoo/microchip databases. Likewise if a member of the public comes across an animal with a collar tag on they are more inclined to attempt to trace its owner. Recent photo It is a good idea to have a recent photograph of your pet(s) in a safe place so that if the worst did happen and you were separated, you have the materials to hand to immediately make posters etc. Make a note of any distinguishing marks or features on your pet so you can provide a more accurate description. Food Have at least a 2 weeks supply of pet food (and water) stored at all times. Store dry food in watertight containers, and if you store canned food do not forget to store a can opener nearby! A few treats should also be stored if possible to provide them with some comfort. Medications Always keep a back-up supply of your pets medications. Your veterinarian will likely be closed for business during a disaster so your pet has a serious medical condition, you may not be able to obtain those crucial tablets for a few weeks. Transportability Make sure you possess a secure pet carrier for small dogs, cats, rabbits and small mammals. Use the carrier at home before disaster strikes, so your animal is used to it. Larger dogs must have a secure leash or harness. In a panic, your pet may try to escape so secure transport is essential. If your dog rides with you in your car, keep a leash in the car so your dog can be safely controlled if you have to leave your vehicle. Identifying a pet shelter For public health and safety reasons, most emergency shelters do not accept pets. In case disaster strikes a small area that just happens to include your home, make sure you have numbers handy of hotels and motels in your area that accept pets. In the event of a wider area being affected, or a mass evacuation, you will need to contact your local emergency management office, animal shelter or animal

control office. Remember, pet shelters may only accept your pets if you can provide proof of vaccination so keep your vaccination card somewhere safe. Start a buddy system with a friendly neighbor Arrange to check on each others pets in the event of you not being home when disaster strikes. You will need to provide them with a key to your home. Brief your buddy on any medications necessary, discuss mutual evacuation plans and agree to care for one another’s pets in your/their absence. Inform your veterinarian of this arrangement and have your buddys number put in your file at the vets just in case. Pet survival kit Consider packing a pet survival kit to have available if disaster strikes. The kit should be assembled in an easy to carry, waterproof container and stored in a cool, dry area. Food and medications will need to be replaced from time to time in accordance with their use-by dates. Some medications may need to be refrigerated. Suggested components of Pet Survival Kit: 2 week supply of food (dry and canned) Can opener, spoon 2 week supply of water in sealed plastic bottles Food & water bowls Secure pet carrier for each pet, labelled with your contact information Copy of medical history, including vaccination record List of emergency contact telephone numbers Emergency First Aid kit (see below) Flashlight Radio Batteries (radio, flashlight) Medications Instructions (notification of allergies, medications, veterinarian details) Muzzle Comfort items (toys, blankets, treats) Spare collar, leash, harness Cat litter, tray, pooper scooper Paper towels Trash bags for waste disposal Maps of local area Recent photo of each pet
