CANGGU NEWS Well On The Way To A Waste Free Lifestyle
A decade ago, Bali’s collective war on plastic waste was in its infancy. Fast forward some years and we’ve witnessed a change in our approach to single use plastics with the ban on plastic shopping bags and the Bye Bye Plastic Bags initiative that helped get that ball rolling! This plastic free approach is also evident in the number of eco friendly retailers promoting waste
If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you!
free lifestyles with their growing range of ‘green’ products and packaging.
Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com
Zero Waste Bali is fast becoming one of the front runners for waste free living. What began with one small shop in Jalan Raya Semer in June 2018 has now grown into a 4 store strong movement towards a cleaner greener Bali! A wander around their newest instalment at The Joglo, on Jalan Subak Sari 13, Berawa reveals a vast array of glass jars filled with grains, teas, flours, fruits, choccies and cooking staples as well as green cleaning options, body products and environmentally friendly household items. Simply select, weigh and pay. Easy!
If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.
Don’t even mention ‘plastic bag’ in this store! Customers can bring in their own jars and containers to be filled with Zero Waste’s goodies, use the paper bags available (for grains and dry goods) or there are even a few donated jars that you can use/borrow for free if you forget yours! Something that’s even more exciting is their DIY lab at the back of the shop. Bring in your recipe (or use one of theirs) for your favourite body balm, toothpaste or scrub and you can use Zero Waste’s ingredients to create your own. All you pay for are the ingredients and packaging - use of the kitchen is gratis!

School News Indonesian Values and International Education at Taman Rama Intercultural School – Bali Independence Day By: Adhelia & Angel, Year 12 Seventy-four years ago today, after waving the Indonesian flag for the first time, Ir. Soekarno declared the proclamation: stating our freedom in independence. On 17th of August, our school celebrated that day once again, like every school in our country, remembering the heroes who believed in and fought for the vision that Indonesia could be what we are today: an Independent nation. Students, teachers, and staff gathered together early, on our soccer field, on the morning of the 17th. Many wore neat school uniform and some traditional Balinese costume, as to represent our province, but in all beat the hearts of young patriots. Before the ceremony began, we lined up regimentally, Primary students to High School students, teachers, and staff. To our right, the flaghoisting troop stood to attention, dressed immaculately, and in the front of us was our school choir dressed in white. The ceremony started precisely at 7.30am. And the sun began to rise over the building, casting sun rays as we stood to attention. The Indonesian flag, Merah Putih, was hoisted as we sang, with pride, Indonesia Raya, the Indonesian national anthem, until it reached its place at the top of the flag pole. The ceremony continued with more singing, commemorating fallen patriots, and meaningful speeches from our national school’s principal. We preceded with the recitation of Pancasila, the five principles that represent our beliefs as a nation from years past and years ahead. The prime sounding of our history; 1. Ketuhanan yang Maha Esa / Belief in the one and only God 2. Kemanusiaan yang adil dan beradab / Just and civilized humanity
3. Persatuan Indonesia / The Unity of Indonesia 4. Kerakyatan yang dipimpin oleh hikmat kebijaksanaan dalam permusyawaratan perwakilan / Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representatives. 5. Keadilan sosial bagi seluruh rakyat Indonesia / Social justice for all of the people of Indonesia. The true message of Independence Day was described by our Civics and Citizenship teacher, Ms. Maya Maharia: “On the 17th of August, we gather to pay to tribute and salute our strong heroes of the past. Heroes that led Indonesia to Independence. Heroes that made the dream of a sovereign state that stands on equality with other nations in the world come true. But today, new challenges emerge.
That’s why we must never forget to relive the very same spirits in our hearts. You must never lose your faith and beliefs, never, in a place where everything is dynamic and modernised. Because we are entering an era of intense competition, where you can be swept off your feet at any time. Precisely because of that, we must continue to create and innovate. Cherish your Pancasila, for that is the true speaker of diversity in religion, ethnicity, race, and group. It is the place for everyone to receive work opportunities, freedom of voice, and constructive challenges to find their dreams and aspirations. In unity, we can find the energy to activate our strength and spirit to learn. In unity, we can find solidarity, tolerance, and enthusiasm to share. LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA! Long live the land of Pancasila!”
Pancasila is one of the underlying philosophies, together with Mahatma Gandhi’s example of non-violence, at Taman Rama Intercultural School – Bali, where all religions are represented and respected within our tolerant school community. We celebrate all religious occasions through calendar events and special morning assemblies. On Thursdays, Purnama and Tilem (full moon and new moon) local students and staff wear traditional Balinese costumes to show respect to Bali province. And on Fridays, congressional prayers are provided for Muslim students and teachers. Saraswati, Easter, and Waisak are also important school events. As is Chinese New Year and Buka Puasa Bersama (breaking of the fast together during Ramadhan). On Kartini Day, 21st of April, our school organises a festival of Indonesian culture which includes Indonesian history displays, Indonesian culinary delights through a student-led bake sale, and all members of the school community dress in traditional costumes from different provinces from the archipelago. There are Indonesian arts demonstrations and performances of Indonesian music and dance. Our Taman Rama Intercultural School students are also encouraged to include and reflect upon Indonesian cultural aspects and social issues, in particular, Bali province, within their international examination coursework projects. For example, Balinese mask makers from Mas, Ubud in Art and Design, the value of the mangrove plantations in Environmental Management, and the importance of Bali as a premier tourist destination in Travel and Tourism. Our school is a proud Indonesian school offering a balance of Indonesian and international values.

Restaurant & Food
Update Naughty Nuri’s Seminyak is actually on Jln
Mertanadi, Kerobokan. Whilst Ribs are obviously the specialty of this franchise, unlike the original in Ubud they also offer quite an interesting menu of other options. The most recent additions to the menu have been a full range of different burgers. The Charcoal Burger [pictured] has tender shredded pork meat and coleslaw. Charcoal [actually coconut embers] buns are supposedly good for detox and are the latest world wide food fad. Activated charcoal is an ancient way to cleanse the system, as it is the most absorbent material to get rid of toxins and impurities from the body. Another new menu item is their interesting Chicken Parmigiana. It is the New York Italian version of what was once just an eggplant dish in Italy, breaded chicken topped with a tomato salsa. Access to this outlet is aided by a large car park at the rear of the restaurant, a rarity these days in Bali.
UNESCO or UNWTO and [the certificate] won’t be easy to get,” Tourism Ministry Arief Yahya told a recent press conference in Jakarta, as quoted by kompas.com. UNWTO’s lead expert, Roberta Garibaldi, said UNWTO was applying three assessment processes for the title: namely an inventory of gastronomy assets and attractions, which include mapping the readiness of the industry and business players, a verification and analysis process that includes interviewing all gastronomy stakeholders, producers, hotels, restaurants, chefs, food festival initiators, regional administrations, transportation providers, academics and tourists and recommendations that are required to be implemented by the stakeholders. If all goes well, Ubud may receive the title in 2020.
caramel sauce] or Grilled Chicken, greens, cashew nuts and pineapple, served in a pineapple boat. There are Sandwiches on Ciabatta or Burgers, for just a snack. The local menu leads off with a Ginger Chicken and included the ever popular Indo-Chinese Sweet and Sour Chicken [Ayam Asam Manis]. The kids love the Gelato Twists.
Two Moods is on Jln. Tanah Barak, in Canggu. The two moods are breakfast and dinner, two restaurants in one. Open from 8.00 a.m. you really can have breakfast here. After the juice and coffee it can be standard [eggs, etc], healthy or even Vegan. Dinner is general International with a leaning to Mediterranean. A cosy, friendly restaurant with views, it is a pleasant spot for relaxed dining.
Aperitif @ The Viceroy has amazed everyone with
Riverside is the newcomer in Lovina. It is yet another project by the ‘retired’ Marinos of Mykonos fame [too old to work, too young to retire], the man who virtually started what was to become Eat Street, as I once called Jln. Laksmana in Kerobokan. It is to be a modern café but no doubt many Greek favourites will be on the menu. central garden area, very relaxing. It is just metres away from the throbbing noisy Raya Seminyak. Whilst it is under French management the menu is a mix of local and Mediterranean dishes. If you want French you can order a real Salade Nicoise [greens tossed with tuna, tomato, corn, onion, black olives, potato, boiled egg and honey vinaigrette], Steak Tartare or the very French Fish a l’estragon [mahi-mahi in a wonderful tarragon cream sauce]. There are unusual dishes on the menu such as the Tuna Sesame Steak [with a balsamic
up with new things! The latest is a rotary pizza oven. It is located street-side, adjacent to the ever busy gelato area, between the street and the bar. It works in the same way as a convection oven. The pizzas are placed on the rotating centre plate, the wood fire is on the side, producing a more evenly cooked, smoky, pizza. Massimo, ever the perfectionist!
its incredible fine dining experience, taking us back 50 years, chandeliers, crystal and all. Their original 8 course degustation menu remains but there is now also an 8 course Vegetarian menu. Braised young jackfruit with fennel and a Mushroom Wellington, both sound great and I am sure they are exceptional but I am afraid that any visit there for me has to include their wonderful seafood and meat dishes on the main degustation menu, such as the Iberico Pork, Caviar, Foie Gras, Duck Magret and the most sensational of all, the Venison Wellington. Aperitif is a dining experience never to be forgotten.

Ubud may be named global ‘gastronomy destination’? The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is assessing Ubud for its suitability to be named a world “gastronomy destination”. The assessment is apparently to last one year. The UNWTO seeks to make Ubud a prototype “gastronomy destination” for other regions around the globe. “I want Indonesia to have a world-class culinary destination, hence we need a certificate that will function like an award. The best endorsers are world organisations such as

GARDEN DOCTOR When Life Won’t Give You Lemons! ‘Good Morning Garden Doctor, I live up at UBUD and in our garden there is a very tired looking lemon tree. It was here when we got here but over the past few years it seems to be producing less and less. We’ve had numerous bug infestations lately in the past two years, I think one was a citrus beetle and now it’s full of tiny white bugs. I’ve been spraying white oil, but the bugs just seem to come right back or I can never get rid of them entirely. Once we get rid of one pest another one seems to move in. The tree looks like it’s just hanging on, the new foliage is shrivelled and any lemons that we do get aren’t very good and usually only a few. Should I keep spraying with the white oil or should I try a different pesticide, or just give up? I want to save the tree as it’s an established tree and when we first moved here we had heaps of lemons from it, so many that we made lemonade!
removed otherwise they’ll re-infest the new growth. Basically, you need to cut the tree back to its bare bones by removing the canopy. I know it sounds risky, but lemon trees and most other types of citrus usually bounce back hard and grow better after treatment like this. It will most likely be re-invigorated with increased fruit production into the future. For some citrus growers it is a routine course of action undertaken every 10 years or so, whether bug infested or not it gives the tree a new lease on life. The ideal method of ‘skeletonising’ involves cutting all of the growth back, so that you’re left with a single trunk and strong even spaced branch stumps. Ensure you are using sharp sterile cutting tools - making clean cuts is essential.
You love your lemon tree, but the problem is the bugs do too! There are many types of insects and mites that are common pests of citrus trees. The orange citrus beetle otherwise known as the ‘stink’ bug is one of them, aphids and scale are also common invaders. It definitely sounds like you have a scale infestation which is severely affecting the health of the tree. The scale insects reside on the undersides of the new growth, sucking on the fresh sap and in the process retarding the ability of your plant to grow and produce fruit.
Skeleton Pruning A skeleton prune is simply pruning the tree back to its main limbs so that you are left with the ‘skeleton’ of the plant, in other words a brutal cut back - which in many circles is the go-to option for successfully countering most citrus diseases and pest problems. With a severe bug infestation, you want to go hard at it, but preferably not back to a stump obviously. At the very least, all of the branches and foliage containing the pests must be
Further Tips for General Citrus Care Citrus will tolerate a range of soils, though most prefer well drained, moderate to slightly acidic soil, pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Citrus will always prefer full sun and a site protected from strong winds. They also need a regular feeding schedule as nutrient rich soil is required for fruit production. Citrus are voracious feeders and they have an insatiable appetite for nutrients and will soak up whatever fertiliser you can send their way. Well-nourished trees will produce high yields, and also develop natural defences to pests and diseases. All types of citrus require a constant nutrient supply, with a high requirement for trace elements. A regular application of a liquid seaweed fertiliser will supply needed trace elements, otherwise mulch with fresh kelp/ seaweed gathered fresh from the beach. Sprinkle compost around the tree and feed a few times a year with a specially formulated citrus fertiliser. Pelletised chook manure or other animal manures can be also be added to the topsoil over the root zone twice/year. Always water well after fertilising. A consistent supply of nutrients is the key to getting the best out of any citrus - seaweed fertiliser and compost is a requirement at the very least.
Do you have any further advice for lemons and citrus in general? I’m thinking of trying mandarins in the future. Looking forward to hearing back, Sincerely, Kate.’
If the scale infestation is severe twigs and branches will be dying back, leaves are shrivelled and falling, and the fruit is stunted if any is produced at all. As the problem your dealing with is unresponsive to pesticide spray then it could be time to take some drastic action and skeletonise the tree - sounds scary doesn’t it but just make sure to do it before Halloween!
I’m picturing increased yields - a big, juicy constant supply of lemons on a pest free tree, facilitated by the brutal skeleton pruning technique.
Rake up the debris from the lopping and pack it into strong plastic bags sealed tight and left in the sun for a few weeks to kill all the pests, after which time it can be thrown out - but not into the compost. You will find that soon afterwards the lemon tree responds with lush new vigorous growth. At this point is a critical stage. The tree will require extra water and a constant supply of nutrients to keep pace with the plethora of new shoots sprouting from the skeleton. Over the next weeks/months the new growth produced can be so dense that it may even be necessary to prune in the centre and thin shoots at the periphery to prevent the tree from becoming overcrowded with foliage. It could take anywhere from one to two years before the lemon tree starts to bear fruit again, but when it does…watch out!
Fruit and frequency will also depend on water supply. Too little and the fruit may be small or not appear at all. Water regularly in combination with a free draining soil - they will require least one deep watering weekly for flower bud formation through to fruit set to produce a good crop. Add mulch for moisture retention and to discourage weeds which will only compete with your tree for water and nutrients. If weeds are left to become over-grown they will invite pests and disease. Never mulch right up to the tree trunk, otherwise collar rot could result - meaning no fruit and probably no tree also! Hopefully by this time next year I hear that you’ve been making lemonade!

Because there are few restrictions here in obtaining a professional license, Bali is rife with imposters who claim they are expert in one thing or the other. Many countries have requirements in order to prove an individual practicing in a field has the proper qualifications. Prime examples of fields to be careful of are financial planning, the real estate business and building contractors in which there are no tests to pass nor certifications or licenses to acquire, thus no ramifications or punishment for malfeasance. Also bear in mind that in order for there be legal credibility in a court of law, an expert must be Indonesian. A foreign professional’s qualifications will most likely not be recognized, a thorny problem if there is a court case down the line. By the same token, an individual in some types of businesses can be driven to bankruptcy by all the various permits and government requirements for a portion of their incomes.

Banks in Indonesia are graded at different tiers. The big banks like BCA, Mandiri and a few others are the safest, but offer the lowest rates for Certificates of Deposit. Medium sized banks usually offer a slightly better rate. For example, if BCA offers you 6.5% interest, Permata Bank may offer 6.75%. Then there are the lower tier banks like Victoria Bank which might offer something like 10% or more but being a smaller bank means more risk.

* Protect your garden! A garden is very vulnerable to the elements. Erect a roof over your plants to make them resilient in heavy rains, harsh sun and other events that can smash plants. A roof can be made quite cheaply and easily with just bamboo stakes and a cover of mesh screen (jaring paranet) that costs only Rp15,000Rp25,000/meters (depending on the width). The sun and water drizzle can still seep through to nourish the plants. Very practical: when not in use, just roll the mesh up and tie it at the top.
*The CD rate may also be affected by how much you intend to place in the deposit. BOOMER CORNER
A Few Tips for a Better Travel Experience in the Boomer Years
Galvanized by the Venice Biennale, I recently returned from a twenty-three day trip to Italy. This every-other-year international art exhibition goes from May to November and always recharges my creative juices.
I’m a skin product junkie. But cosmetics take up room and add weight. Before I left, I found a 7-centimeter tall cylinder of small plastic containers that screwed together. Into these, I put daycream SPF 30, hair goop, and body butter for dry skin.
Plus, I love being in Italy. The people, the food, the art, the Renaissance buildings, all speak to a deeper part of me.
I also bought a set of plastic travel containers for hairspray, face cleanser, and other items. This came in a plastic zip bag that was the perfect size for getting liquids through airport security. I had enough in the product department to last the whole 23 days at a fraction of the weight. Miniso, in Plaza Renon, has a good selection of these containers.
After my last Italian sojourn, four years ago, I knew I needed to travel differently than when I was younger. So what have I learned to make a trip easier in my seventies even though I’m fit and in good health? Packing Probably my biggest issue is the inability to carry the weight I used to carry. That means, having the lightest possible suitcase with four spinner wheels that I can afford. I need to be able to lift it up and over some of the 403 bridges that connect the islands of Venice as well as onto overhead luggage racks on trains. If I can do that, then I can travel just about anywhere I want to go.
As an artist, photography is another creative outlet for me. I like my camera but I found it’s just too heavy to carry day-in and day-out. While most people are satisfied with their phone for picture taking, my goal is to find the lightest weight camera I can find that still does everything I want it to do.
Next time I’ll pack even lighter and buy a few things along the way. Not only will I fill in my wardrobe but I’ll have mementos from the trip. More Weight Next were the shoes. I need a couple of pairs of shoes, so if one pair hurts, I can change them out for the other. I do so much walking that even with the most comfortable shoes, my feet need variety. Shoes need to be broken in before you leave.
I find the best way to exchange currencies is to use my ATM card rather than exchanging cash. However, it’s a good idea to have some cash with you in case you lose your card. There were machines everywhere we traveled. However, we learned the hard way to carefully read any notices about exchange rates. The machines in the Milan airport didn’t charge a fee but had such a bad exchange rate that I ended up losing about $35 on a $300 withdrawal. My travel companion, on the other hand, changed cash at an exchange window in Venice and didn’t see the fine print about the 20% commission. She lost $40 on a $200 exchange. By far the best ATMs are the ones that are physically part of a bank.
Packing took me weeks this time, trying to figure out which lightweight clothes to take and to still feel stylish. Italians respond more openly to well-dressed people. I tried on outfits for days, mixing and matching, trying to come up with the ideal wardrobe. I ended up with two pairs of pants, one of which I wore on planes and trains, two skirts, and various tops that I could mix and match with the bottoms. This all weighed almost nothing. But even as careful as I was, there were two tops I could have left at home. So my advice is, be ruthless in your packing and take out anything you are not 100% sure of.
Important Papers and Money My friend and I exchanged copies of our health insurance, passports, ATM and credit card numbers, along with the number to call if a card is lost. Tell your card company where you’ll be traveling and the dates to avoid embarrassing card declines.
Consider Where You Will Stay One new thing I learned on this trip is to stay in closer to the places I want to visit. My travel companion and I rented an Airbnb apartment in a residential area to be away from the masses of tourists who pour into Venice every day. This would have been the perfect accommodation ten years ago, but we found that the extra twenty-minute walk to start and end the day used up precious reserves we would have preferred to use in other ways. I have always had a lot of energy but I can see it declining as the years advance. This is not something I easily accept!
Language It was raining and we were cold when we walked into a canalside café. In Italian, I asked the waiter, “Do you have a table for two wet dogs?” He laughed and treated us so well that he made our day. I find where ever I travel that having a few words in the local language brings a smile to people’s faces. With the Google Translate App at your fingertips, you can have those words too. Happy Travels!

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH Why is My Baby Crying? Newborns usually spend 2 to 3 hours a day crying. Normal as it may be, a bawling baby can be distressing for infants and parents alike. Babies sometimes wail for no obvious reason. But other times, they’re trying to tell you something with their tears.
pediatrician. If you’re breastfeeding, your doctor may suggest you stop eating a single food (for example, milk or eggs) and keep off that food for a week to see if your baby’s fussiness lessens. If you’re using infant formula, ask your doctor about switching to a different formula.
Reasons for Crying
Reflux Crying right after a feeding could be a sign of gastro esophageal reflux, also called heartburn. But first, if your baby is bottled-fed, make sure that the discomfort isn’t just from swallowed air. How to soothe. Take breaks and burp your baby often during meals. Feed them while they’re sitting up. You might try special nipples and bottles designed to prevent swallowing too much air. If that doesn’t help, reflux may be the culprit. Talk to your pediatrician. About 80% of the time, babies with mild reflux get better with thickened formula, staying away from cigarette smoke, and avoiding cow’s milk passed through their mothers.
With a bit of common sense and sleuthing, you may be able to figure out how to comfort your baby. Hunger During the first 3 months of their lives, newborns tend to feed as often as every couple of hours. When they want to feed, they usually make short, low-pitched cries that rise and fall. How to soothe. Offer your breast or the bottle to see if it helps. Even if they’re not hungry, your infant may just want to suck on something for comfort. You can use a pacifier or have your baby suck on their own finger or thumb. Fatigue Unlike most adults, babies who are overworked or tired often turn fussy instead of drifting off to sleep. How to soothe. One of the best ways to encourage slumber is to swaddle your baby. Wrap them snugly in a blanket with only the head and neck peeking out. It helps mimic the mother’s womb. A change of scenery also may do the trick. Go for a walk with a stroller. Or pack your baby in a car seat: the lulling vibration may get them to drift off. Soothing music and aromatherapy can also help. Create a “sleep play-list” and choose a scent (e.g. Lavender) for your baby and use it only at sleep times. Allergies A nursing mother may pass on what she eats through breast milk. That may upset a baby’s tummy. If it happens a lot, your infant may be allergic or sensitive to cow’s milk, nuts, wheat, or other foods. How to soothe. If you suspect an allergy, talk to your
Colic About one in five newborns get this condition, which is marked by more than 3 hours of crying a day, three times a week. It usually happens during the first month after birth. These sudden crying sessions may be louder and higherpitched than usual. Your baby’s face might redden, their belly may bulge, and their legs may be bunched up. How to soothe. It’s not clear what causes colic, but it usually stops on its own by 3 or 4 months. Until then, you might: • Rock or walk with your baby. • Use “womb sounds” to lull them to sleep (washing machine noise is great for this, or download a womb sound on your media player). • Offer a pacifier. • Ask your doctor if extracts of fennel, chamomile, or other herbal remedies might help. • Take breaks for yourself so you can best care for your baby. If your baby continues to cry for a long time, check with your

doctor to make sure there isn’t something serious going on. Sleep Habits By 6 months, children should be able to fall and stay asleep on their own. But sometimes they might not want to go to bed without you. How to soothe. Don’t feel guilty for ignoring your baby’s wail. Research shows that slowly letting your child cry out for longer and longer stretches of time before you check on them helps them learn to go to sleep faster and stay asleep longer than other methods. When to Call Your Doctor Call your pediatrician right away if your crying baby: • Has been inconsolable for more than two hours • Has a temperature of more than 38C(100.4 F) • Won’t eat or drink anything and/or is vomiting • Has vomiting and diarrhea IF YOU EVER FEEL YOURSELF LOSING YOUR TEMPER TO THE POINT THAT YOU MIGHT HARM A BABY…. WALK AWAY. It is far better to leave a baby cry while you gather control of your emotions, than to hurt your baby. (Yes...chronic sleep deprivation along with a crying baby can really cause emotions to get out of control). R O TA R Y NEWS News from the Rotary Club of Bali Canggu
Lombok. Prof Shane Snyder recently met us there to survey villages and take water samples back to his lab for analysis. One the results are in we will formulate a plan. We have also been asked to coordinate malaria and water projects on Lombok through our prominent member Dr. Claus Bogh, who is head of the Gates Foundation team on Sumba and also chief scientist at The Sumba Foundation. We are still working out the logistics for this but should be good to start in the New Year.
We’d like to say a very big thank you to the members of our local community who supported the Rotary Club of Bali Canggu’s (RCBC) recent Quiz Night at the James Cook Sports Bar in Banjar Semer. We raised Rp.6 million to go towards our emergency fund. The next quiz night is booked for the 14th of October so start booking your teams of 4 now. A big thank you to our sponsors Soul on the Beach, Soul and in a Bowl in Sanur, Nigel & Yani at Mason Adventures, Jackson Liliy’s, Sardine Restaurant, Mrs. Sippy, and of course Hatten Wines. We couldn’t have made it a success without your generous participation. RCBC currently has only 11 members and growing, but we are a very active club and keen to add more members to our ranks. If you think you have what it takes and can spare time to help make our projects a success then contact us at getintouch@rotarycanggu.org Our latest projects include: A joint project with the Rotary Club of Mataram on Lombok to supply 3 Eco Schools on Lombok with educational and art materials. 3 members of Rotary Canggu and 3 from Lombok were involved and the end result were happy smiling faces from the kids. A very heart-warming experience. We are also working on a water project with Nanayi Foundation to provide fresh water to remote villages on
We are always looking to increase our membership, so if you would like to help and be part of a family style group of friends, why not join us for our bi-weekly meetings held on the first and third Tuesday of every month in the Tugu Hotel in Batu Bolong from 6pm.
Our meetings typically include an inspiring guest speaker and usually run from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. WhatsApp 08113998850 for more details.
Solemen has asked us to help rebuild a house that is collapsing for a poor family in North Bali. We are raising funds for this along with the support of one of our sister clubs in Australia. And finally we are raising funds to convert a building into a library using a structure that has been kindly donated to the club by Tugu Hotel Lombok.
As well as getting together with like-minded people, learning about club projects and listening to guest speakers present interesting topics, you are more than welcome to join RCBC members, along with visiting Rotarians and guests after the meeting finishes for drinks and snacks. We’d love for you to help us become part of the solution. If you would love to help out but don’t have the time then consider making a donation, either one off or recurring to help fund our projects.
We are not able to run social projects as mentioned above and events like our Gala Dinner and Quiz Nights without your continued support and commitment to help. So thanks to everyone involved, whether you help raise funds or get hands on, on the ground…

The island of Bali from space – East Bali
Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features East Bali, Indonesia, as it appears from space. Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has more volcanoes than any other country in the world. The island of Bali is positioned over a subduction zone where the Indo-Australian plate slides under the Eurasian plate, making it a hotspot for volcanic activity. Mount Seraya is visible on the peninsula surrounded by green vegetation. The most predominant feature in this image is a volcano called Mount Agung, which erupted in 2017 after being dormant for 50 years. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission. Local News Indonesian government to conduct electric motorcycle trial in Bali The Indonesian government has announced that Bali will be the site of an upcoming trial run of electric motorcycles that will help determine national policy on the environmentally-friendly machines as the country revs up its ambitions to become a major manufacturer of electric vehicles. Harjanto, directorgeneral for industry, metals, machinery, transportation and electronics at the Ministry of Industry, said that Bali as well as Bandung, West Java, will serve as locations for the pilot project, according to an official statement issued yesterday.
For the project, the ministry is working in cooperation with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), which has the goal of speeding up the use and development of electric vehicles in Indonesia. “This electric vehicle demo project aims to not only introduce electric vehicles but also to boost the growth of electric vehicle manufacturing within the country,” Harjanto was quoted as saying. For the project, the Industry Ministry will work closely with ride-hailing firms Go-jek and Grab Indonesia, Harjanto added, as they have millions of active users and thousands of driver-partners across the archipelago. The trial run will be carried out through a rental scheme for businesses and consumers involving 300 units of electric motorbikes, 1,000 battery units, 40 Battery Exchanger (BEx) stations and 4 electric cars. As reported by CNN Indonesia, the electric motorbikes will be Honda PCX Electric and they will be rented at a rate of IDR 2 million (USD 140) per month. According to Harjanto, the results of the trial will help the government establish its policy for electric vehicles in the country. The project looks like it will sync up well with Bali provincial government’s own plans to issue a gubernatorial regulation aimed at regulating electric cars and motorcycles. There’s not many details as of yet about that regulation, but Bali Governor Wayan Koster said it’s part of an effort “to ensure a clean Bali.” Indeed, the central government’s own ambition to become a leader in electric vehicles is also part of its ongoing commitment to reduce emissions. Indonesia, as one of the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters, pledged in 2015 that it will cut emissions by 29 percent in 2030. [coconuts.co August 29, 2019] Chinese tourist dies after being swept away while taking selfies at edge of Nusa Lembongan’s Devil’s Tear cove A Chinese tourist died on Saturday after she was swept away by a huge wave while standing near the edge of the Devil’s Tear cove on the island of Nusa Lembongan, located just off the coast of Bali. The accident reportedly happened while she was taking a selfie. “When they arrived, the victim and her group has been informed by their tour guide to stay away from the edge while taking photos,” Police chief inspector Putu Gede Ardana from Klungkung Police told Tribunnews. The victim, identified as 38-year-old Li Huiling by local media outlets, was part of a tourist group visiting the popular photo site on Saturday.
24 Indonesia restricts foreigner travel to restive Papua Indonesia is imposing restrictions on foreigners visiting its restive Papua region, the government said Tuesday (Sep 3), after four Australians were deported over claims they took part in independence protests. Papua, where a low-level insurgency against Indonesian control has simmered for decades, has seen two weeks of mass protests and deadly riots sparked by anger over racism and fresh calls for self-rule. On Tuesday, Indonesia’s chief security minister Wiranto said the country would limit foreigners entering its easternmost territory - which has popular beach destinations - over safety concerns and to weed out suspected agitators. “We’ll temporarily limit (access to Papua),” the minister told reporters in Jakarta. “That doesn’t mean we won’t allow anyone in. There will be filters based on security and safety issues,” he added, without elaborating. It was unclear whether the new restrictions would prevent foreign journalists from going to a region subject to a government-ordered Internet shutdown since the unrest broke out - a policy slammed by media and free-speech advocates. “This is to protect foreigners from becoming victims of the riots,” Wiranto said. “It’s difficult to distinguish between foreigners who are there to provoke and interfere from those who went as tourists,” he added. Wiranto also dismissed accusations that the government was dragging its feet on probing claims security forces committed human rights violations, amid unconfirmed reports that the military shot dead six protesters last week. He reiterated Jakarta’s position that it was not open to talking
about Papuan independence. “The door is closed on dialogue about a referendum,” Wiranto said. Indonesia took control of Papua, a former Dutch colony on the island of New Guinea, in the 1960s after an independence vote that was widely seen as being rigged. On Monday, Indonesia said it was deporting four Australians who had entered Papua - which shares a border with independent Papua New Guinea - on a yacht last month. The group was reported to have participated in a demonstration and raised the banned Morning Star flag, a symbol of Papuan nationhood. Indonesian authorities have arrested dozens for taking part in protests and banned demonstrations that could lead to what it described as “anarchist acts”. The recent unrest appears to have been triggered by the mid-August arrest of dozens of Papuan students in Java, who were also racially abused. Indonesia is deeply sensitive about Papua. In May, a Polish man was sentenced to five years in prison for plotting with rebels to overthrow the government in the province. [www.channelnewsasia.com September 3, 2019]
Should Bali get tougher on misbehaving Aussie tourists? Balinese courts should take a “no sympathy” approach to misbehaving Australian tourists, the Australia-based Indonesia Institute has urged. Ross Taylor from the Perth-based group said courts in Bali were too lenient on law-breaking and disrespectful holiday-makers and needed to send them to jail. His calls follow a recent string of bad behaviour by Aussie tourists on the holiday island, including a man who allegedly fly-kicked a man off his motorbike during a “rampage” in Kuta.

Earlier this month an Adelaide model said she was strip searched, detained by customs and asked to cough up almost $40,000 after airport officers found “drugs” in her luggage. Other footage, obtained by Channel 9, allegedly showed Mr Carr ambushing grandfather Nyoman Purda and throwing him off his own porch while claiming someone was trying to kill him. Mr Carr told Channel 9 he was “very drunk” after consuming “more than ten” vodka cocktails. “I apologise, I don’t remember anything at all,” he said. “I just want to apologise to everyone, to the victims, to the Bali people, to anyone affected by this at all. Darwin man facing drug offences in Bali after boat rescue
Ardana said Li had stood too close to the edge of the cliff while taking photos and got swept away when a huge wave hit. As reported by Tribunnews, local residents immediately tried to rescue her from the waters. They successfully retrieved her after 20 minutes and she was promptly taken to a nearby community health center (Puskesmas). Unfortunately, Li reportedly died en route. “The victim died while she was on her way to the Puskesmas,” Ardana said. This popular spot on the island of Nusa Lembongan, located just southeast of Bali, has drawn many tourists looking to take pictures or videos with waves spectacularly smashing against the cove as their background. Over the years, however, those huge waves, which often smash violently against the rocky cove, have either injured or swept away several tourists. In May, an Indian tourist went missing after he was swept away while also reportedly taking a selfie at the Devil’s Tear. Plans to put up a safety guardrail along this cliff have long been in the works, but have repeatedly been postponed due to a lack of funding. I Nengah Sukasta, who heads the Klungkung Tourism Agency, said plans to do so this year have yet to be confirmed. “As it turns out, plans to build a safety guardrail along Devil’s Tear cove in Nusa Lembongan with the help of ASITA (Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies) have not yet been confirmed,” Sukasta said on Friday as quoted by Tribunnews. A well-known Darwin man who was rescued in Indonesian waters after severely injuring his back on his broken-down boat and then charged with drug offences has been moved to a Bali hospital for better medical care. The offences he is facing carry a maximum 12-year jail term. Tony Haritos, 63, hails from a prominent Darwin family.
near his bed while the rest was underneath it. Ms Karmana said Mr Haritos had bought the drugs in Bali over a year ago, stored them in his cabin, and then used them to “self-medicate” for his injury. “When he fell down in the boat he wanted to reduce the pain and then he used [the drugs] again,” said Ms Karmana.
Mr Haritos was sailing around West Timor in late July when his catamaran broke down twice near the Sabu Islands before drifting to Sumba, almost 80 kilometres to the east. While awaiting rescue with his one remaining crew member, Mr Haritos began to suffer severe back pain from a long-standing injury and “collapsed”, said his lawyer Sienny Karmana. “He can’t move and he decided to use that, the meth,” she said. A local fisherman raised the alarm when he spotted the drifting boat several days later, and Indonesian police took Mr Haritos to hospital.
Indonesian police documents allege Mr Haritos “committed a crime of owning, keeping and possessing class 1 narcotics”. He faces a possible 12-year prison term under Indonesia’s tough drugs laws. The police documents also list Mr Haritos as the owner of the Dili International School in Timor-Leste.
Three days later they requested the hospital perform a urine drug test on Mr Haritos, which detected the presence of methamphetamines. Police then searched his boat, and allegedly found 0.06 grams of methamphetamines, some of which was
After his rescue, he was evacuated to the island of Sumba, where his lawyer said he signed a document acknowledging his arrest and that he would face prosecution when a doctor certified that his health had improved. “The police understand he needs treatment, so that’s why the police have given the letter to bring him to hospital until he can face the case,” said Ms Karmana. She said Mr Haritos’s family privately chartered a plane to transfer him to a Bali hospital for better treatment. “The injury is quite bad,” Ms Karmana said. “He can’t walk, he can’t sit, and then when we try lift him from the bed to the stretcher he screams and cries.” He is awaiting MRI test results for his possible spinal injury. It is not yet known if he will be taken into custody in Bali to face court or whether he will be flown back to Sumba, Ms Karmana said. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is providing consular assistance. [ abc.net.au August 26, 2019]

Sustainable and Practical: All-Terrain Bamboo Wheelchairs Indonesia lacks services and infrastructure for people with disabilities. This means that many children and adults, and particularly those living in villages where the rough terrain is not suitable for normal wheelchairs, are confined to their homes. To try to rectify this dire situation, Eco Living Bali, a supplier of sustainable products made from natural ingredients, and East Bali Bamboo Bikes, which falls under the East Bali Poverty Project that helps isolated communities, joined forces to make the very first all-terrain wheelchair in Southeast Asia. The prototype, which was ready in March this year, took around eight weeks to produce. As the parents of a disabled child, the issue of access has been dear to the hearts of the founders of Eco Living Bali, Brad and Twone Moreland. The inspiration for an all-terrain wheelchair came when the duo heard of the plight of a 12-year-old boy in North Lombok from Duncan Ward, the Founder of Classroom of Hope, an organization that helps to provide access to education for children in developing countries. “Nasrudin lost his standard wheelchair in the 2018 earthquake and had to drag himself through the dirt to get to school. We decided that we had to help him get a wheelchair that would withstand the rough terrain of the village, and that’s how the idea of an all-terrain wheelchair was born,” says Brad. After numerous brainstorming sessions, the team decided to build their prototype from materials that are easy to source and repair in Indonesia. The wheelchair frame, laminated seat, backrest, foot rest and rear basket are all
made from bamboo sourced from the slopes of Mount Agung in Ben village. The wheelchair is protected with environmentally-friendly lacquer and sealant to ensure that it withstands rough weather conditions. The decision was also made to use mountain bike wheels suitable for steep or uneven terrain. “As there is already a short supply of metal wheelchair parts in Bali, we wanted to find an alternative solution, and as owners of an eco store, we wanted to find a sustainable solution. As bamboo is found in abundance in Bali and throughout Asia, a bamboo wheelchair could be easily repaired by a bamboo artisan in a village,” Brad says, adding that each wheelchair has to be custom made to fit the beneficiary’s requirements. Up to date, Eco Living Bali and East Bali Bamboo Bikes have funded and built three bamboo wheelchairs. The first wheelchair, or the prototype, is currently on display in the Eco Living Bali shop in Kerobokan. The two other wheelchairs have been handed over to those in need. Nasrudin, who was the inspiration behind the project, received the second wheelchair, while the third wheelchair was donated to 15-year-old Nengah Macika, the son of one of the East Bali Bamboo Bikes craftsmen from Ban Village. “We have a growing list of underprivileged children and adults in Bali and Lombok who require all-terrain wheelchairs, and we are currently seeking funding to make them,” says Brad. “We are initially only targeting Bali and Lombok, however, we plan to expand to other islands soon and then hopefully the rest of Asia.” As the issue of access for people with disabilities is close to
Ben and Twone’s hearts, they do not make any profit from this venture. As such, Eco Living Bali urgently requires funding to build more wheelchairs. Each wheelchair sponsor will receive a certificate and a photo of the wheelchair their contribution helps to build. Those who sponsor an entire wheelchair will have their name or logo placed on the chair.
Nengah Macika’s Story Macika was a healthy baby until three months of age when he developed high fever and suffered several seizures. Since then, Macika’s growth and mobility have been affected. He is also non-vocal and struggles to communicate with his family. Until 2004, when the East Bali Poverty Project established monthly parent-baby health posts in neighboring Cegi, there were no health facilities near Ben village, where Macika lives. In 2005, the East Bali Poverty Project found a volunteer professional massage therapist who trained Macika’s parents to give him daily massages, but he has shown little improvement. While Macika’s mobility remains restricted, his new all-terrain bamboo wheelchair means that he can now get around more freely. www.ecolivingbali.com https://www.eastbalipovertyproject.org https://www.eastbalibamboobikes.com By Anita Copyright © 2019 Bali Advertiser You can read all past articles of BA Feature Article at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

The Joys of North Bali or ... Is there a Bule in Buleleng?
area. You can even have a meal from either of the big two world-wide “restaurant” chains! To the east of Singaraja you will find many spots for a delightful meal by the ocean. Lovina offers a wide range of food options from Balinese to Greek, and plenty of night life if you are ready to party. And it is all at about half the price of similar fare in the south.
There are mixed feelings involved when asked to write an article encouraging more people to visit the north of Bali. Many would prefer to keep it a secret, only “those in the know” living and visiting this relatively untouched part of beautiful Bali. Friends and relatives planning trips to Bali always suggest they could drop in and visit ... until they find that we’re nowhere near Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur or even Ubud! “Oh it’s too far” they say, “maybe you could come and visit us instead? Our hotel is in Nusa Dua.” And on our (increasingly rare) visits south, if asked by a shopkeeper or new acquaintance “Where are you from?” the answer “Buleleng” elicits the inevitable response, “Aduh, jauh!” So what has Buleleng got that you can’t find in the south? Perhaps I should start by outlining some of the things it hasn’t got, for example: Traffic jams: The bane of the southerners’ life, almost unknown in the north. From central Singaraja to Pemuteran, for example, a distance of some 57km, you will meet just 5 sets of traffic lights and make the journey in under an hour and a half. (So, about the same time as to travel the length of Sunset Road on a good day!) Violent crime: We shudder when we see reports of some of the things that happen down south. Apart from the odd incidence of petty crime, we are a remarkably law-abiding lot up here!
Tourist hordes: Actually we do have tourists, just not in hordes. By comparison with the south we have vast areas of towns, villages and countryside still untouched and unspoiled by tourism. In return for forgoing the pleasures of traffic jams, violent crime and tourist hordes, we can offer plenty of enticement to visit the north. The main tourist centres, Lovina and Pemuteran, have no shortage of accommodation all the way from backpacker to 5-star luxury resorts.
Pemuteran likewise has some wonderful eating establishments in addition to its underwater attractions. Further west you enter the West Bali National Park - wildlife abounds, including deer, forest fowl, wild boar and the elusive Bali starling. Looking for property, perhaps? There’s plenty on offer, frequently with ocean views over rice-terraced hills. On a clear day you can see right across to the imposing mountains on the east coast of Java. Those used to southern prices will not believe what’s available in the north!
Our attractions celebrate the natural wonders - the stunning mountain lakes beyond Bedugul, trekking in Munduk, dolphinwatching in Lovina. The mountain chain running the length of Buleleng seems to almost rise from the sea and disappear high in the clouds. Incredible waterfalls can be found all along the north side of the mountains, my favourite being Sekumpul - a real jaw-dropper. On the way there drop in and see gamelan instruments being made in Sawan village. Snorkeling is good at various places along the north coast, but the pièce de résistance underwater is undoubtedly to be found around Menjangan Island where both diving and snorkeling are world class. Singaraja is a vibrant city of broad avenues and tiny alleys. There are plenty of restaurants - enjoy a delicious ikan bakar served at your table on the jetty at the old port, or join the university students at one of the many cafes in the campus
But quite frankly, many of us would prefer you don’t take advantage of all of the joys of North Bali ... we’d much prefer to keep it to ourselves! Kit Hamilton

Alternative Voice This August All our Paths led to Hong Kong In the strange combination of circumstances that at times conspire to rule, enliven or bedevil us, my wife and I found ourselves drawn back to Hong Kong, a city undergoing a long hot Summer and a protest movement turned violent that threatens to destroy it. Both my wife, who is French, and myself, a Brit, have been permanent residents of Hong Kong since the early 1970s. We know the city better than we know London or Paris. We built a house here in Bali in the early 1990s and since 2000 are pretty much Bali-based.
Anyway, we hit it off and when later he heard I was planning a visit to Hong Kong, shared he too would be in Hong Kong at the same time for a Peace climb of the Cheung Kong Centre, the 1,000 ft headquarters of Hong Kong’s top oligarch, Li Ka Shing, whom in happier days Hong Kongites called Superman. He asked if I’d help out with the press side of things. Spiderman vs. Superman... how could I refuse.
Alain Robert’s climb of the Li Ka Shing’s tower went off like clockwork at 9.00 pm in the morning. Ten metres up he hung a banner urging China and Hong Kong to talk not fight. He then continued his climb to the top, where he was detained by the police, taken into custody, charged with public nuisance, and released that afternoon. All very civilised considering this was his third ascent of the building. The photo agncies were all there and the news went around the world and on the very same day Li Ka Shing posted full page newspaper advertisements exhorting us all to “Love China, Love Hong Kong, Love Yourselves” accompanied by an obscure quote from a T’ang Dynasty poem, serving to muddy where he stood on anything.
A couple of months back my wife remarked we’d not been back to Hong Kong in a while and thought we could lose our right of abode there if we spent more that three years away from the city. She was right. We found we’d lose our Hong Kong residency if we didn’t visit by 24th August, 2019. Same with our driving licences. Valid for 10 years they were up for renewal, as were our 1-year international licenses. We’re both past retirement age so there were medical hoops to be gone through. It was time also for my wife, who has more than her fair share of medical problems, to see her doctors. Adding to the stress, we had to be back in Bali before the end of the month or be forced to renew our Indonesian visas in Hong Kong. My days were consumed juggling dates for our flights and accommodation online in a very fluid situation. All our plans seemed to unravel when my UK passport became an issue. It had 14 months to run and only one page left. Just enough to accommodate a full page Indonesian visa and squeeze in the exit/entry stamps someplace. To cap it all we discovered that the Indonesian immigration, who have an uncanny knack of passing new regulations to catch the unwary bulé with his trousers round his ankles, had just increased the visa requirement for passport validity from 12 months to 18, no exceptions. If a way couldn’t be found out of this muddle we’d not be able to travel, we’d lose our Hong Kong residency and face swingeing overstay penalties of US$70 a day in Bali - while I waited for a new passport. Not only that, both our hand phones packed it in. Things didn’t look great. Welcome relief from this grind came when the Yak asked me for a piece for their September issue on Alain Robert, the French Spiderman, who has lived in Bali for the past six years. Alain was the world’s leading exponent of rock climbing free-solo until in 1994 he became famous for climbing the world’s tallest buildings. Climbing free solo means you do it without any aids at all. Just a bag of chalk to dry your hands, is all. Very scary, you get vertigo just looking at the photos.
If you didn’t watch the media you might not have known anything untoward was taking place in the city. But everyday, specially at night and at the weekends, it was all happening. There was a pall of unease hanging over the place and a worrying combination of fatalism and anger among the young, who feel they have nothing to lose and does not bode well for Hong Kong’s future.
All the while the situation in Hong Kong had become increasingly worrying and violent, with clashes taking place from Friday night through early Monday morning every weekend. Menacing pronouncements from China about “not standing idly by” with scary videos of the 12,000 People’s Armed Police in nearby Shenzen shown dispersing a crowd of rioters dressed up like Hong Kong demonstrators with baton charges, rubber bullets, tear gas and armed personnel carriers, filled the media. Coverage too of PLA units being rotated into Hong Kong. Originally we planned to arrive in Hong Kong at 9.00pm at night on 24th August. Any delay and arriving just three hours later and we would lose our Hong Kong residency. All our efforts would have been in vain. We were cutting things fine. The demonstrators were just beginning to turn their attentions toward Hong Kong’s airport. Then as sometimes happens, things started to resolve themselves. We advanced the date of our departure; a friend on leave lent us their apartment on Lantau and it all came together. The South Side of Lantau is about as nice and unspoiled as Hong Kong gets but a short 30-minute drive takes you over the island’s mountain divide to Tung Chung and Chap Lek Kok airport and the 40-minute ride on the MTR downtown. My time was spent doing the rounds of government offices, escorting my wife on her doctors visits and meetings with my French Spiderman, as we planned the arrangements for his climb.
It remains hard to say how it will work out for Hong Kong. Things have not been this bad since 1966 in the worst days of the Cultural Revolution. Everyone knows China can crush Hong Kong if it wants to. Question is, do they need to and what price will they pay if they do? The extradition question was a stupid mistake, uniting all sectors of the Hong Kong community, but easily solved. The essential problem is the lack of hope among young people for the future. As things are, they will see the city burn. The guilty men are Hong Kong’s own property oligarchs, who have robbed Hong Kong blind for the past 45 years and think they can keep right on doing it. If Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s luckless CEO, junks the extradition treaty law and embarks on an extensive crash program of low-cost housing Hong Kong can survive and prosper. If not, China will supress all dissent and Hong Kong will disappear as the city we know. Li Ka Shing and his cadre have all got their wealth outside China and won’t suffer anything, save an excess of crocodile tears and the odium of having destroyed one of the world’s great cities. As for China and its inflated Emperor Xi - any hope of a peaceful reunification with Taiwan is laughable. The good news is that there are now signs that - having gone to the brink, cooler and wiser counsels will prevail. This August was a hot one. How was yours?
