Izakaya Comes to Bali! KUU is a Japanese restaurant specializing in Izakaya cuisine. It is located street-side at Sanur’s latest 5 star hotel, the impressive Maya Sanur. Izakaya was developed as a series of small dishes in Japan’s Sake bars. At Kuu they classify their offerings as Appetisers, Sashimi, Sushi, Simmered & Steamed, Grilled and Fried dishes and, of course, Desserts. By keeping your hunger at bay, you kept on drinking! Or that was the intention, by providing small, tasty, budget-priced snacks. Much the same philosophy created Tapas in Spanish bars. Both of these cuisine styles have developed into full restaurants that serve just those dishes, as many people now prefer a series of small and different tastes to the traditional 3 course norm. Kuu was one of the first Izakaya restaurants in Bali, Many dishes are just small serves for one, but there are a few exceptions to that, big enough for two to share amongst the more main style dishes. However, 3 years after opening, Kuu is morphing into a more general Japanese restaurant. The many small dishes are still there, just that more traditional mains have been added as well, and a larger selection of sushi and sashimi, as was requested by the now considerable regular clientele. Amongst the mini dishes is two-mouthful specials such as Goma Dofu [a split steamed prawn sitting on a sesame scented square of tofu, with a touch of wasabi], as well as a very tasty Asparagus Nikumaki [crunchy asparagus spears rolled in a thin slice of Angus beef, grilled with another sweet sauce. I could make a meal of these alone] and the healthy Edamame [poached soya beans]. All the major Sashimi is available [tuna, salmon, scallop, octopus, white fish, shrimp and fatty tuna] but the Chef’s Special Platter of Sashimi [3 or 5 pieces] is the best option. The Sushi choice is greater, with a variety of Maki Rolls some of which are quite spicy and even a few pure vegetarian ones. Special rolls include the basic Californian [avocado, crab, lettuce and seaweed plus fl ying fish roe], Ebiten [stuffed with tempura of prawn, lettuce and mayonnaise], Karaage [chicken, lettuce and mayonnaise] and the special and more expensive Kuu Roll [tuna, lettuce, cucumber, seaweed, spicy mayonnaise, topped with grilled eel]. 19 individual Sushi are available and the Chef’s Special Platter can be ordered as the Standard or De-Luxe version. And then there is the impressive Dragon Roll [pictured], with prawn, avocado, lettuce, cucumber, seaweed, fl ying fish roe and unagi sauce. After all of those tempting small snacks it is time for a few

more substantial dishes. The mains include Buta Kakuni [pork belly]. Now when you see pork belly on a menu you normally think of small meat with much fat! Not at Kuu where the fat has been trimmed and the pork belly fl esh slowly braised. It is served in a bowl to keep it warm, the meat sitting on a base of mashed potato, with leek and boiled egg. Tori Jibuni Fuu is chicken, asparagus, shiitake mushroom and pumpkin, braised in a dashi broth. Furofuki is for lovers of Daikon, this radish is braised with dengaku miso, a sweeter version of normal miso, a strange name as ‘dengaku’ is also the name of an old traditional Japanese dance! Chawan Mushi is a steamed savoury egg custard with seafood, shiitake mushroom and ginko [maidenhair], topped with plum paste and a dashi glaze.

It can be served hot or cold, I like mine hot. It is always very daring bringing a totally new cuisine and dining concept to Bali with its limited local market and a tourist one that changes almost by the week. The Maya Group should be applauded for being so forward looking and they have been rewarded by an excellent acceptance level. Try KUU with an open mind and you will be rewarded. The excellent menu is well illustrated for the first timers. This is a very professional operation.

A pleasant surprise was seeing Chicken Livers on the menu, so surprisingly rare in Bali, what happens to them? …..millions must be thrown away? Here the livers are kept in milk, a kind of marination. The result, silky smooth.

Amongst the ‘Fried’ dishes one took me by surprise. Whenever I am checking out restaurants I invariably order one or two very simple dishes, the ones you see on many other menus of that cuisine. Such was the Chicken Katsu. At Kuu a full chicken breast is crumbed [which keeps all the juices inside during cooking] and deep fried. The result was chicken, crisp on the outside and tender inside, served cross-sliced for easy chopstick manipulation. The accompanying Tonkatsu sauce was sweet and spicy, perfect for dipping.

Tempura is the classic Japanese offering from the fryer. The batter is light and crisp. The ‘Grilled’ section is headed by all-time favourite Teriyaki. Strips of very tender beef or chicken coated with that sweet soy and mirin sauce. Yakitori is traditional street food but much better when coming from Kuu’s hygienic kitchen. They offer the original [chicken pieces] or variations [chicken and leek or minced chicken]. Takoyaki are amazing small balls, crisp on the outer and very soft inside, stuffed with a mixture of octopus, leek and ginger. The pyramid is topped with seaweed, fl akes of bonito and lines of mayonnaise. A recent addition to the menu are Bento Boxes, A Japanese institution mainly ordered for lunch, they are laminated compartmentatised boxes with different combos; here there are three, salmon or chicken tempura or a beef teriyaki. For dessert stay Japanese with Yukimi Daifuku, red bean ice cream, with mochi or go fusion with Yuzu Cotton Cheese Cake. Still being mostly an Izakaya restaurant, Sake is the normal drink of choice. Sake is often referred to as Japanese rice wine yet its production is much closer to the way beer is brewed. It is very strong and is only taken in small sips from the little cup [for first-timers; you do not refill the cup after emptying as you would if drinking wine, you only pour when you are about to

Will Bali’s Young Generation Abandon Island Agriculture?

The numbers of farmers in Bali decreases by up to 8,500 people every year! Most farmers on the island have the luxury of more than 1,000 sqm of land but their monthly income is only USD 140/ IDR 2 million. 70% of Indonesian farmers are aged over 45 years and the labor in agricultural sector continues to decline each year but Bali’s population is definitely not shrinking!

The Future Farmers Initiative’s (FFI) initial focus is on SMKN 1 Petang, as the only agricultural vocational school in Bali. Most of the students come from farming families and the school itself is in a prime agricultural area. With this project, FFI hope to encourage a new generation of Balinese farmers who posses a vital understanding of business, market demand, environment and time saving technology. Beneath the surface of Bali as a Paradise destination for those who are fulfilling the bucket list of their lives, lies a deeply rooted problem that needs addressing. Local farmers who should have benefited from the tourism sectors are living on the brink of poverty. With the charm of tourism, the young people in rural Bali pursue the dream of better (and more aspiring) work in the cities, leaving the remaining agricultural areas to the older population. Not only are young people reluctant to continue ploughing the fields passed down to them from generations before them, their parents do not even recommend it as it is considered a less prestigious and prosperous job. Does that mean the fields will soon be abandoned? Facing the fact that Bali’s younger generation have developed a certain lacklustre view of the island’s agricultural sector, Parama Anak Bangsa Foundation (STUCO) has initiated the Future Farmers Initiative (FFI) program that aims to create young change makers who are able to catalyse change for rural agriculture.

FFI seeks to connect research university, Bogor Agricultural University - IPB, Udayana University, the island’s F&B industry (hotels, restaurants, cafes) and the farming community in an effort to create the most suitable produce for the market and quality non-GMO harvest. In addition to vegetables and fruits, they are also cultivating flowers that are needed for religious and wedding ceremonies. With further research and insight into market demands and kitchen management, FFI can help the industry to reduce food cost without compromising quality. Not only focusing on nutrition, flavour and freshness, the locally grown food that they aim to supply to neighbouring businesses also creates a stronger local impact on the welfare of the surrounding area, helping local economies to thrive. The Future Farmers Initiative also aims to reduce carbon footprints by cutting distribution lines and food wastage.

This young generation of farmers will have a better understanding of business, not only possessing knowledge of how to plant, but how to sell and what to grow based on market demands and trends. No farmers=No food=No future - an occupation that has been handed over from generation to generation will not be extinct, it will simply take a new shape and become the agent of change to the future of food production in Bali. Information on the map continues to grow and become more accurate as hundreds of Indonesians from Lombok, Bali and other islands across the archipelago travel to remote Lombok communities to gather info and provide supplies. Hundreds of thousands of people - including an estimated 50,000 pregnant woman - are sleeping rough on the ground with only tarps for shelter and dangerously poor water supplies.

Once again, Lombok Earthquake Relief FB page is the place to find more information, if you think you can do more than simply toss a few coins in the next collection tin you see. Yesterday I met an Australian woman on a yoga teacher training who says she’s making sure that each of the 30 students tucks a can in their luggage. There’s a well-organised and transparent collection process, so that every bit goes directly to small nonprofits already in Lombok, working actively with the most affected communities. GOOD KARMA TATTOOS?

So even if you are only a visitor, you can BUY a water filter system to supply 50 people or more for $60ish and donate it to a Lombok non-profit (visit www.nazava.com, where they sell the systems for Lombok evacuee shelters at cost, and ask them to send it where it will do most good).

Ubud’s latest community centre, Karma House, is certainly “changing the vibe around tattoo culture”. I admit, this little black duck was surprised that my friend chose a “tattoo parlour” to meet for coffee.

Other projects are assisting by digging new wells or replacing some of the thousands of kilometres of broken PVC pipes. Again (you guessed it), info on that FB page, where the work of many great non-profit teams is reported. SHIRTS FOR SHIRTS Do you have a business here where you can sell cool products? Can you find room for another t-shirt in your holiday bags? Through that same FB page, you can connect with a group that is making great t-shirts where all the profits go straight to support local NGOs working on the ground in Lombok. And for every t-shirt you buy, TWO good quality men’s shirts will ship direct to Lombok. This is a super smart idea, because there are lots of reports of men in the camps wearing rags because they have no clothes left. It’s only possible because of a “fire sale” and the innovative thinking of a great networker from Jakarta.

Bali’s Drone Culture Captures the Island from New Angles From beaches, jungles and rice terraces to cliffs and volcanoes, Bali is overfl owing with jaw-dropping photo opportunities. And with the popularization of drones, photographers and video-makers are gaining a new, loftier perspective on the island’s charms. Professional photographer David Ed Ziegler has devoted the past seven years to documenting Bali’s landscapes, seascapes and culture from the air. “As a photographer, Bali gives me the colors, lights, shadows and contrasts that I need. The people, the ceremonies, the nature, the rice fields - Bali fills my lens with its heart and soul,” David says. “Seeing the earth from the sky opens up a new world because it gives you an opportunity to take pictures from impossible angles.”

Before drones stole his heart, David dabbled in the world of fashion photography and pursued a career as a photojournalist. While traveling to document situations in war torn countries such as Afghanistan gave David the adrenaline rush he craved, he says that change became inevitable once he hit a certain age. “I felt that with age I was becoming slower, less alert, and overly confident in the field. Too much confidence can be bad in this industry. I needed a new outlet. To have something that made me feel excited again. One day I was in an electronics shop, and saw this very aesthetically-pleasing machine with a camera attached to its body. I decided to give it a try, and have been in love with drones ever since. Today my house looks like a drone store.” While most tourists still capture images of Bali with cameras, phones and go pros, drones are becoming increasingly more visible on the island’s skyline. lightweight and sophisticated, they are also more portable and easier to fit into holiday luggage. Today, several drone brands are even offering pocket-size drones for taking selfies. For David, the allure of blending Bali’s landscapes and new technology has been irresistible. “The island’s rice fields change colors with the seasons, so your drone can capture incredible colors and patterns. Tegalalang, near Ubud, is particularly incredible for rice field photography from the air,” he says. “Some other impressive places include Uluwatu for its cliffs at sunset, Amed with its small fishing boats and, of course, the Mount Agung area.”

It certainly has for David who is quick to point out some of his favorite drone shots of the island. “This one was taken on Pandawa beach. You can see the green sea, the white sand, and the red umbrella, as well as the gazebo on the stone pier. It was around five pm, and the light was incredible, highlighting each detail,” he says. “While this might be one of my favorite photos, each of my pictures represents a moment, a souvenirs, they are like my children.” How to Get Involved

While fl ying a drone is a lot of fun, all pilots wishing to fl y a drone on the island have to comply with the regulations set by Indonesia’s Ministry of Transport. Clara Dewi was born Denpasar and spent her childhood in Kuta. Her father is a traditional painter and her mother is an entrepreneur. Clara was the first female student to become the chairman of BEM PM, one of the largest student organizations at D e n p a s a r ’ s Udayana University. Always passionate about language issues, Clara became the first Language Ambassador of Bali (Duta Bahasa Bali Province) in 2016 and the first National Language Ambassador (Duta Bahasa Nasional) in 2016. Clara is a member of the Balinese Language Board (Balai Bahasa Bali), teaches social studies and is responsible for outreach at BASAbali Wiki (basabali.org), an organization that works with community members and scholars to revitalize and perpetuate the Balinese language. How have you applied your leadership skills? I have always had an interest in developing my leadership skills. I was elected to become the most inspiring student in 2015. While serving as presdient for BEM PM, I helped run student character development and community social programs that were engaged in educational, environmental and cultural issues. The organization has three main programs including Student Day, Dies Natalis and the Udayana Jazz Festival. Another program teaches underprivileged children living in rural villages. I have also worked as the coordinator of environmental issues for student associations all over Indonesia. Why were you chosen as a Language Ambassador over other contestants? It was a long journey that led to my finally being selected as a language ambassador. I first had to pass a selection process at the provincial level. Before a panel of judges, the candidates were evaluated for their individual talents, presentations, debating skills and local and national language abilities. After passing through this assessment process, I was eventually elected as a language ambassador. But my journey did not stop there. I must continually fulfill my duties as a provincial representative of Bali and compete nationally against language ambassadors from other provinces throughout Indonesia. How many language ambassadors are there? The language ambassador program began in 2006. Each year there are aproximately 20 male and female language ambassadors selected. Each province in Indonesia has their own ambassador that promotes its own regional language such as Sasak, Batak, Manadonese, etc. What special talents are required for the job? Language ambassadors must be really passionate about linguistic issues. In addition, the language ambassador must be a person who can be a language instructor and inspire people to better appreciate their own native language. A language ambassador is also required to

My particular job is to get people to love the Balinese language. I focus on young people who are interested in preserving the language. I collaborate with the Government Language Office in Bali, conduct linguistic and social responsibility seminars, visit schools to teach the importance of the Balinese and Indoneisan languages through storytelling, drawing and coloring. I teach how to use Indonesian language in the proper way, encourage a love of reading, put on language competitions and work with local TV stations to promote the language. How do you help to promote the Balinese language? I work with organizations, communities and individuals in developing the free BASAbali Wiki online dictionary/ encyclopedia. We also donate our time to such national literacy programs carried out at the Government Language Center (Balai Bahasa Bali), such as as Teras Aksara, Sadar Bali and Gerakan Cinta Bahasa Indonesia which socializes the use of Balinese among the public and students. In collaboration with BASAbali Wiki, I recently conducted a workshop entitled “How to be a Good Translator” and completed a project on identifying Balinese herbs (Wiki Usada).

What environmental issues have you been involved in? I’m vice-chairman at Human Resources Management of Sobat Bumi Indonesia, an organization that is concerned with the environment. We have held some some environmental activities and seminars that focused on trash, pollution, cleaning beaches, tree planting activities and and saving our threatened mangrove forests. I formed a medical team whose task it was to learn how to use medicinal plants in our daily lives. Do you also work with children? I’m involved in Udayana Mengajar, an educational project which teaches children who live in Bali’s rural areas. We recently taught in one of Bali’s most remote villages. Subaya village in the Kintamani District is three hours from Denpasar and can only be reached by motorcycle. The village has only one primary school with a few teachers. Every Saturday and Sunday, we gave instruction on math, the Indonesian language, dance and drawing. We didn’t receive any pay. We volunteer so that the children will benefit from the additional instruction.

Do you have any future plans? I would like to continue studying for my master’s degree, specializing in the fields of education and environmental studies. I hope to pursue a career in the field of international relations. I want to develop the BASAbali Wiki even more. The Balinese language is the mother tongue of the Balinese people and needs to be preserved so it doesn’t become extinct. I want to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Gather yourself. ou’ve left pieces of you where you fell. hhh this is why didn’t feel like was in my body. mmediately began calling back my soul fragments to return to me. s did this became more conscious of my body, the pharmacist who was administering my first aid and drienne’s hand on the middle of my back. She gently guided me to a bench where sat down. ’m going to pay the bill. ust sit here. offered to pay but drienne said, on’t be silly. ’ll take care of it. could see her talking for awhile to the lo ve ly p h a r m a ci st , a n d In d i a n w o m a n w h o m i g h t h a ve b e e n in her ’s. o money was e changed. hat happened asked. She refused to take any money and said that she ust felt this was something she had to do. ow was really amazed. thought ashed through my mind, hat did do to deserve all this kindness t was like my mind couldn’t r e co n ci le t h a t so m uch ki n d n e s i n h um a n i t y co uld b e possible. felt such deep gratitude and was humbled by all the acts of kindness that had been shown to me. y friend

Sometimes it can take longer to heal than we’d like, but it’s important to honor our healing process. P a i n i s a si g n t h a t so m e t h i n g i s o ut o f a li g n m e n t a n d r e q ui r e s our attention. 31 DYSTOCIA IN DOGS: WHEN YOUR DOG HAS DIFFICULTY GIVING BIRTH Bali Dogs are one of the few breeds in the world who have evolved through natural selection (survival of the fittest) rather than artificial breeding (more accurately inbreeding) of pedigree breeds. As a result, problems like dystocia (difficulty giving birth) very rarely happen in Bali Dogs, as those individuals with a narrow pelvic canal would not survive to pass on their genes to their offspring. As a result of that at Sunset Vet we almost never see birthing difficulties involving Bali Dogs, and if we do then those cases are never due to anatomical problems. What causes dystocia in dogs? There are many potential causes which can include issues with the foetus such as its size or position in the birth canal, maternal problems such as poor contractions, an infection in the uterus or abnormalities in the pelvic canal, vaginal vault or vulvar opening. There are also further factors that predispose dogs to dystocia such as age, being obese and sudden changes in their environment prior to going into labour. Are certain breeds more susceptible to dystocia than others? Absolutely – brachycephalic (squashed nose) breeds such as English or French bulldogs, Boston terriers, Chihuahuas and Pugs are the most likely to suffer complications giving birth. Research has shown that brachycephalic breeds are up to 16 times more likely to suffer from dystocia than crossbreed dogs with a longer muzzle were. For some breeds such as the English Bulldog, it is almost unheard of for them to give birth naturally, and an elective Caesarian is planned in advance by the owner to avoid any complications. At Sunset Vet we recommend that all dogs have an abdominal Xray in the final 2 weeks of their pregnancy so that we know how many puppies the mother is carrying. This allows for better decision making come the birth as we know when all of them are already out. How do I know if my dog has dystocia? • Your dog is in labour and more than two hours have passed without any puppies born • Green discharge from the vagina without puppies being born • Longer than two hours have passed between puppies • Your dog is continually straining for a few minutes with a puppy or fl uid-filled bubble stuck in the birth canal • Your dog has intense contractions for more than 20 minutes without a puppy being born • Your dog is depressed, lethargic or her body temperature is more than 39.4°C • Blood is coming out from the vagina for more than 10 minutes • A puppy is in the breech position, meaning the tail comes out first How can I tell if a puppy is in the breech position? Puppies are usually born head first with the forelimbs extended. However, they can also be born with the tail and hind legs coming first (the breech position). You can usually tell if your dog’s puppy is in breech if their tail is seen hanging from the vulva, or there is a lump just behind the vulval lips and your dog is straining. Some breech presentations can be delivered without assistance, but often complications occur which require veterinary assistance. How to bring my dog to the vet during labour If you have any concerns during your dog’s pregnancy, particularly in the later stages, call your local vet for advice. If you need to take her to the vet, take any puppies she has already delivered with you in a separate secure box with a hot water bottle or heat pad to keep them nice and warm. Ensure the hot water bottle is well wrapped in a towel or similar to prevent overheating or burning the puppies. How long is the gestation period in dogs? Most female dogs who have not been spayed go into heat

every six months or so, although this can vary from breed to breed. The heat cycle tends to last between 18 and 21 days. Once your dog is pregnant, the gestation period begins. The normal length of the dog gestation period is typically between 63 and 70 days. If your dog is showing no signs of whelping (giving birth) 63 days after her last mating, it is worth contacting your vet for an ultrasound scan where he/she can check the puppies still have a heartbeat and all is well. How long do dogs take to give birth? There are 3 stages of labour in dogs — the start of contractions, delivery of puppies and delivery of the placenta. Labour can last for many hours but it often varies between breeds. Dogs with slim heads such as collies and Dobermans may deliver all of their puppies within two to three hours. But brachycephalic breeds, such as bulldogs and pugs, tend to have more difficult deliveries and sometimes will produce one or two puppies relatively quickly and then rest for a while before labour starts again. Signs of a dog going into labour Some dogs may be restless prior to going into labour. Others will stop showing an interest in food, although this isn’t always the case. These behaviours are often followed by repeated licking of the vulva. As birthing time approaches, your dog will begin to endure stronger and more frequent abdominal contractions. Your dog’s waters should then break. If her contractions continue for two hours without any signs of a watery discharge or puppies, call your vet. Preparing for whelping There are various things you can do to prepare for your dog for giving birth. Most importantly, make sure you have your vet’s number ready just in case there are complications. It’s also helpful if you have a suitable whelping box (enclosed area with comfortable bedding), a supply of newspaper to line it with during delivery, and clean towels and paper towels on-hand to help with the clean-up. Other supplies you might need are sterilised scissors to cut the umbilical cord, unwaxed dental fl oss to tie off the cord, iodine to clean the puppies’ abdomens after the cord is cut, and heating pads or hot water bottles wrapped in towels to keep the puppies warm.

Delivering puppies at home Make sure you keep both the mum and her newborn puppies under close supervision in case they get into trouble. If you can see a puppy at the vulva and it is not being delivered, take a clean towel and gently take hold of the puppy. Gently pull the puppy at approximately a 45° angle to the ground. Keep a constant pull even when your dog is not straining, as gentle traction will stimulate her to keep straining. If the puppy does not move or if it appears to be painful to your dog, contact your vet urgently.

Benoa Bay reclamation scrapped, says Bali Governor-elect

Bali governor-elect I Wayan Koster said the reclamation of Benoa Bay would be canceled and the area would be turned into a mangrove forest instead. “We will take strict action against all parties that proved to have committed illegal actions in the area, which resulted in the destruction of the mangrove forest,” he said on Friday, August 24. Koster explained the mangrove planting would take place after he took office, and that the official policy to cancel the reclamation would be issued in September 2018. He also assured that the conservation plans were different from the initial revitalization plans in the Benoa Bay area. Koster added Benoa Bay would remain a green zone. “So the barren areas would be reorganized,” he said. Koster went on to say that he would issue an official policy after he was installed governor on September 17, 2018, to make sure the reclamation would not proceed. He also said he would send a letter to the central government on the policy. Koster said the policy would be sufficient to stop the reclamation, even without the annulment of the Presidential Regulation No. 51/2014. According to Koster, the presidential regulation did not only affect the reclamation of Benoa Bay, but also several areas in Indonesia. He said a gubernatorial regulation was ample to put a halt to the planned reclamation. “I think it does not take a president [to stop the reclamation]. A governor is enough,” he said. Tourists trickle back over to Lombok’s Gili islands after earthquake devastation, evacuation Tourists are starting to flow back to the Gilis, a cluster of three small idyllic white-sand islands, off of North Lombok, popular with holiday-makers. The three islands were heavily impacted by the earthquakes striking Lombok over the past month. The level of destruction along with anxiety if a tsunami were to occur, prompted an almost-full evacuation of Gili Air, Gili Meno, and the most frequented of the three, Gili Trawangan. “People have returned to the Gilis. Even property owners, who are mostly foreigners have started to come back,” Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said from Lombok’s Pemenang Port on Sunday, as quoted by Detik. The islands, where the economy revolves around tourism, can be accessed via boat from Bali or mainland Lombok. In recent days, tourists have been arriving via fast boat from Bali to get to the Gilis, chairman of the Gili Trawangan Employers Association (APGT) Acok Zani Bassok told Radar Lombok on Tuesday. Only about 600 tourists have been coming in per day, which is not much compared to the average of 2,500 daily arrivals that Gili usually experiences at peak season moments like the month of August and the end of the year, according to Bassok. The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Tourism Office from the provincial government says it has been working on repairing damaged facilities like roads and docks to prepare for the arrival of more tourists. There were 1,400 tourists visiting Gili Trawangan as of Tuesday, NTB Tourism Office head, Lalu Faozal told VIVA on Wednesday. However, maintenance done by the government has not been the only rebuilding effort in the Gilis. Business owners and local residents have joined forces to restore the island back to its tourism-friendly conditions, cleaning up debris from wrecked buildings, CNN Indonesia reports. “This cleaning is indeed our united initiative (amongst locally-based entrepreneurs) to revive the atmosphere,” CNN quoted Baso, an accommodation and restaurant owner on Gili Trawangan, as saying. To speed the cleaning and clearing process up, business owners and residents have rented excavators and trucks. “We quickly rented two excavators and two trucks. If we waited for help from the government, it would take long until we’re finished,” he said. “We have prioritized the coastal area first,” he explained. Baso says his community is aiming for the Gilis to be optimal for visitors by Sept. 1, when there will be a welcoming event. “Because of the momentum, in the beginning of September, with the fast board route from Bali to Trawangan having opened again, we have made an initiative to prepare a welcoming event. Port of Benoa: deeper and wider Beritabali.com reports that the Port of Benoa in South Bali is undergoing a massive redevelopment that will increase the size of the actual port and allow the berthing of large ocean-going cruise ships that will be made possible by extensive dredging, the deepening of ships’ channels, and the lengthening of the eastern shipping berth. Officials in charge of the port are targeting that the revamped port will be able to handle 160 cruise ships in 2019. The CEO of Pelindo III in Bali, I Wayan Eka Saputra, said on August 31, 2018, “Now through the end of this year (2018) 80 cruise ships will berth in Benoa. After the dredging is finished and ships’ channels are deepened we hope to double current capacity to 160 cruise ships.” In the past, the Mean Low Water Spring (MLWS) or the low water heights occurring at the time of spring tides was 9-meters. Following port improvements, the MLWS at the Port of Benoa will become 12-meters. The dredging and channel deepening work has been completed at the port with final certification by an international maritime agency the only remaining step before large ships are given a green light to visit the Port. The dredging in front of the eastern pier and turning basin commenced in April 2018 and now allows ships carrying 3,352 passengers to disembark directly from ship to shore. Government unable to offer financial support for sick mum’s return from Bali The government is unable to help fund the medical evacuation of a Kiwi mother fighting for her life in Bali to New Zealand. Abby Hartley, 41, was rushed into hospital at the beginning of August after falling ill while on her ‘second honeymoon’ in Bali with husband Richard. After emergency surgery to remove a section of her bowel, her health took a turn for the worst and she developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), several infections, a collapsed lung and kidney failure. She is now in an induced coma, and her family have set up a Givealittle to raise the costs of an emergency medical evacuation and pay for her enormous hospital bills. Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters said he understood that Ms Hartley is in a very challenging situation, but the Government could not offer financial support. “I have to confirm that the New Zealand Government is unable to fund the costs of medical care of evacuations for New Zealanders who become ill while overseas,” Mr Peters told NZME. He said that they should talk to their insurers and could get assistance from the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta. “I wish Abby well with her recovery, and hope she is well enough to return to New Zealand soon,” he said. Abby is severely oxygen deprived, meaning she will have some brain damage - but the extent of this won’t be known until she wakes up, her daughter Sophie wrote on the Givealittle page. Sophie returned to New Zealand on August 17 to continue running the family tiling business, but her father Richard and 16-year-old brother Toby remain in Bali. China’s tourism boom prompts fears that Bali is being ‘sold cheap’ Australians have flocked to Bali for decades, drawn by the luxurious accommodation, cheap food and beer and the distinctive cultural experience. Many feel something approaching a sense of ownership of the idyllic island. But we are far from the only people who enjoy Bali’s charms, and the type of tourists travelling to Bali is changing rapidly. The emergence of so-called “zero-dollar” Chinese tourism is beginning to reshape the market in Bali, and local tourist groups, as well as the Chinese consul on the island, are concerned that dodgy operators and business practices are cutting locals out of a share of the profits from shopping, while also risking the safety of Chinese visitors. According to statistics from the Bali Tourism Promotion Board, Australia is no longer the number one source for tourists to Bali. For the first time, that honour now belongs to China. In 2017, 1.09 million Aussies visited Bali, down from 1.14 million in 2016. In the same period, the number of Chinese visitors leapt from 987,000 to 1.39 million. Bali Ngurah Rai underpass ‘99 percent’ completed The grand road works project that is designed to alleviate congestion in South Bali is very nearly finished and we sure can’t wait ’til its ribbon-cutting, since traffic in the island’s south has been even more of a headache-and-a-half since it began. Just the final fixings like some signs and decorative lights on the underpass being built in front of Bali’s international airport remain. The Tugu Ngurah Rai underpass is 99 percent, according to Nyoman Yasmara, “Commitment Enforcing Officer” (PPK) of the National Road Implementation Committee VIII. “Only the final touches are left for finishing ornamentation aspects like water, landscaping, and mechanical and electrical storage,” Yasmara told Tribun Bali on Tuesday. A look at the project site shows Balinese carvings have been installed, giving the underpass a cultural and artistic look. A trial period for the underpass is meant to be carried out in the early days of September 2018. But an inauguration date for the underpass has not yet been confirmed. “We do not know when, we have not yet received instructions from above,” Yasmara explained. However, we do know it’ll be in use before the big IMF-World Bank meeting in early October, where Bali will be flooded by 15,000 delegates. Indonesia tightens security ahead of IMF-WB meeting Police in Bali island of Indonesia have tightened security against infiltration of terrorists to the island, where the next annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) will take place in October this year. “Bali police have set up a task force to detect possible infiltration of terrorists backed up by the police’s anti terror squad (Densus 88),” Bali police chief spokesman Henky Widjaja said. Henky said Bali police chief Ins. Gen. Petrus R. Golose has passed an order to act firmly by shooting terrorists on the spot if necessary. He said police are busy not only in Bali, but all over the country to track down suspected terrorists through a series of anti-terrorist and anti-criminality operations. Indonesia’s military regularly hold security simulation ahead of the IMF-WB meeting every week, while security officers and liaison officers have been made ready for the security of the delegations to the big meeting, he said. Between 12,000 to 15,000 people are expected to attend the annual meeting, including about 3,500 delegates from 189 member countries, roughly 1,000 media representatives, and more than 5,000 participants representing the private sector, the banking community, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and also observers and parliamentarians. Cracks appear on Dewa Ruci statue in Bali following spate of recent earthquakes in Lombok Cracks in the Dewa Ruci Statue in Kuta are being linked to a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck nearby Lombok Island on Sunday, August 19th. NusaBali reports that cracks and small fissures had begun to develop on the statue following an earlier Lombok earthquake of 7.0 magnitude on Sunday, August 5, 2018, made worse by the subsequent earthquake two weeks later. The most obvious cracks can be seen on the statues right shoulder and head. The Badung Regency Public Parks Department have assigned a special team to assess the overall condition of the statue and outline what steps are needed to repair the statues and ensure its structural integrity.
