How Did The Amazons Raise Their Children And Other Quirky Questions You Would Like An Answer To The Amazons, a legendary tribe of fierce women warriors may or may not have existed outside of myths and legends as their history is rather murky and open to speculation. However, they are figures of notoriety and fame thanks to their all-female society and lust for battle, unusual for the times. The Amazons were first mentioned in the Illiad (8th Century BC) and by a few credible Greek historians like Herodotus of Halicarnassus who lived in the 4th Century BC and Strabo, 1st Century AD. Apparently, there were 3 Amazon tribes living in the area of the Thermodon River -in present day northern Turkey- who waged many wars against their enemies the ancient Greeks and fought many battles with neighbouring tribes. Ancient myths say they were the daughters of Ares, the Greek god of war and Harmonia, a wood nymph. A number of their queens were famous, like Penthesilea who fought in the battle of Troy and her sister Hippolyta, she of the famous golden girdle, one of the 12 labours of Hercules. Their society was all female. Males were excluded unless they were slaves. In order to further the existence of their tribe, they procreated thanks to neighbouring male tribes in an annual mating ritual and birthed, kept and raised only female children. Other than that they had no good use for the males of the species. The female children born after their planned mating were kept and raised as warriors. The male offspring were killed, kept as slaves or given to their fathers.
offending the non-binaries out there, the gender-neutral terminology is making an up march and even the US Supreme Court has weighed in on the issue. The non-binaries, by the way, are people who do not identify with either a male or female gender. Oregon was the first state to adopt a 3rd gender ‘X’ -meaning unspecified- on official documents like ID cards and driver licences. Other states are following. The California State Senate voted to ban gender-specific pronouns altogether. Even the airlines are following suit. When you book a ticket with a US airline like Delta or United you now have up to 4 tick boxes to indicate your preference: M, F, U (undisclosed) or X (unspecified). It’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world either takes notice, adopts the trend, or blithely ignores the newfangled convention. But I shudder to think this PC-obsessed gender thing will find its way into novels and non-fiction. How will we distinguish between characters and make sense of dialogues when they are all referred to as ‘they’?
It’s hard to speculate why that gender hatred was so strong and ancient texts are a bit ambivalent about the subject. But if you consider them early feminists, the reason may be obvious. Non-binary, transgender, or transcis? This brings up the question whether Amazon women, if they are still around, would consider themselves as non-binary, transgender, or transcis. Ancient literature and chronicles refer to them as the ‘shes’ of the species, even though they exhibited decidedly male, dominant and downright cruel behaviour. Their anatomy was positively female, even though they were in the habit of removing their right breast when young to make it easier to throw spears or launch arrows when in battle. They obviously had not heard of the recent preference in our modern times to adopt gender-neutral pronouns and the non-binary referral to ‘they’ and ‘them’ instead of ‘she’. This recent trend started in the USA, where people put great stock in being PC when moving in society. For fear of
Leaving the realm of the confused sexes and moving on to more concrete topics: have you spotted the frequent overflights of the international space station yet? Here in Bali, on a cloudless night, it’s easy to see this manned space station moving on its trajectory over the island. You just need to know when and where to look. The space station is an internationally manned laboratory with a crew of 6 astronauts conducting science and technology experiments and living and working aboard for 6 months at a time. NASA publishes a tracker map and has a helpful app to help you catch sight of that spatial wonder. It’s called Spotthestation (just Google it)
C/G/I-07 Nov 18
and you can sign up for email notifications when the station will be moving over Bali or any other location on this planet for that matter. The email will specify the dates and times and directional sweep of the station at your specific location. It will be easy to view the station as it is the brightest object in the night sky. Even with Bali’s busy air space and commercial planes flying over head, the space station will be very distinct as it looks much bigger than a plane, even though it is more than 200 miles or 322 km away, is brighter, and flies much faster. The next sighting over Bali will be on March 13 at 7.53 pm, visible for 1 minute at 22°and moving SSW to S. Longer sightings will be on 14 March for 4 minutes at 7.03 pm going S to E and 6 minutes on 16 March at 6.56 pm going from SSW to NE. Have you synched your calendar with the solar system? Talking about space and other astronomical interesting tidbits like meteor showers, eclipses, supermoons, solstices and equinoxes, did you know you can actually get your computer or smartphone calendar to show you automatically when these note-worthy events are happening? If you are forever missing spectacular meteor showers like the upcoming Eta Aquarids in the southern hemisphere or want to plan ahead for the next total eclipse or your druid dance at the next summer solstice, you will get plenty of notice thanks to an ingenious sync app courtesy of the New York Times which you can sign up for. The app can be used with both Android and IOS calendars. You can subscribe with your Google or Outlook account. It basically adds all sorts of noteworthy astronomical events and happenings to your calendar with a good, succinct description. You will know about scheduled rocket and spacecraft launches worldwide, when Mercury is next slated to transit across the sun, when earth is at aphelion (i.e. farthest from the sun) and other exciting stuff. The calendar will also list anniversaries of significant space events like the first landing on the moon. Now you can wonder if the Amazons looked upon a bright Pleiades meteor shower as an important portent or a call to arms.

Restaurant Review
Japanese, and All That Jazz! Ryoshi was one of the first Japanese restaurants in Bali, just a single shop size in Seminyak which later morphed into a much larger one next door. That move also heralded the beginning of Jazz at Ryoshi, utilising the large roof top area and pandering to the owner, Sagon’s, love of Jazz.
An early expansion saw the opening of Ryoshi Sanur, now it too has moved to larger premises further south along the same road, Danau Tamblingan [in between Soul in a Bowl and Massimo] and once again there is a large room above the restaurant so maybe another Jazz club will emerge? There is a mix of Asian and table seating, the room is fully airconditioned. Ryoshi is an institution in Bali, a truly traditional Japanese restaurant with as many or more, Caucasian customers as Japanese, and it has always been that way. A brilliant menu well illustrated with colour pictures takes the fear factor away from any first timer. Your appetizers can be very healthy such as Edamame [steamed green soy beans sprinkled with sea salt], Agedashi Dofu [deep fried silken tofu in a hot broth], Nasu Miso [eggplant sautéed with onion and sweet miso] or a Mushroom Steak [sautéed in soy and garlic]. Seafood snacks include a great Soft Shell Crab, cooked tempura style in rice flour batter, Kwaebi Kara Age [crispy fried whole shrimps in their shells with sea salt] or Tako No Kara Age, wonderful fried octopus, nice and crunchy. For something different, try the Cheese Mochi, sticky rice cakes with soy, butter and cheese, or the Maguro Panko, crisp fried tuna rolls with a tangy sauce. My most regular reason to visit a Japanese restaurant is to enjoy a wonderful, clean, fresh plate of assorted Sushi for lunch [pictured]. What could be healthier? At Ryoshi the offerings are of unbelievable value, my favourite is the Pisang combo, 12 pieces
of sushi for abour $6 [the maki roll is cut into three which makes 14 in my book]. Sushi to be at its best should be prepared fresh, just for you, and not pre-prepared hours or days before and refrigerated. It always tastes best fresh! At Ryoshi you can sit and watch it being made. It arrives accompanied by a small dish, a lump of wasabi [often referred to as Japanese horseradish but tasting more like a hot mustard] on its side, and a little pile of gari [sweet thinly sliced young ginger] on the edge of the sushi board. Tip some soy [always on the table in a small jug] and edge some of the wasabi in, to your taste! I place a complete sushi in the soy/wasabi mix so it can soak into the rice base [not the recommended Japanese way to eat it], then with chopsticks, or even fingers if you must, eat and savour the exquisite taste. Follow with a small slice of the gari, and a sip of whatever you are drinking. My kind of lunch! Ryoshi has a number of different combination boards of sushi and sashimi [raw fish] or a combo of both. Other raw fish specials include their Tataki which is a Japanese salad of raw fish, a Tuna Carpaccio or Aji Tataki, a type of mackerel tartar. Chirashi Sushi is a bowl of various raw fish draped over sushi rice. Hot entrees include a variety of Kushiyaki [food on skewers]; Nasi, sliced eggplant with yakitori sauce, or my prefered Negi made with young leeks, Kawa, chicken skin grilled with salt and pepper, Teba [chicken wings] done the same way. Top of the list for me is their Hina, chicken and leeks in yakitori sauce, the Beef Rolls, sliced beef wrapped around julienned vegetables, Tsukune Mushroom, mushrooms stuffed with minced chicken, Ebi, salt and pepper prawns and Lebar, chicken livers in yakitori sauce. In fact I sometimes just make a meal of assorted Kushiyaki.

Most of the mains at Ryoshi are Yakimono, or grilled. Beef Teriyaki, or the Chicken or Fish equivalents everyone knows. A Teriyaki Hamburger is a touch of fusion, traditional ball of minced beef sautéed in Japanese wine and soy. Both Beef and Tuna can be had in sizzling Teppanyaki style, and then there are the Wagyu dishes; sirloin, rib eye or rump. For the lone diner there are always the rice dishes; Zuki Don [tuna marinated in sesame and soy] Sukiyaki Don [beef] Oyako Don [chicken and egg or Katsu Don [pork cutlets] all served in a bowl over rice, or the Noodle selection with a variety of Soba [buckwheat] and Udon [thick] noodles. When a place is as busy as this one you do not ever have to worry about freshness of produce. Ryoshi is one of Bali’s success stories, somewhere for an anytime snack or meal, alone of with friends.

Update Cafe des Artistes is a survivor. Once a lonely warung on a dead-end road on the outskirts of Ubud [Jln. Bisma] it has been a thriving restaurant now for many years. The secret has been reasonably priced comfort food, served with a smile. Many of the staff have been there for the 17 years of its existence, always a sure sign of good management. Whilst their steaks are easily the most popular dish ordered here [picture] my favourites have always been the Chicken Breast Provencale and their 100% perfect Thai Beef Salad, Yum Neua, a dish that is otherwise butchered all over Indonesia. Consistent quality and service with a smile, always a success!

Akua is a Spanish restaurant in Jimbaran [Jln. Permelisan Agung]. As the owners come from Bilbao, it is also a Basque restaurant, the menu containing standard Spanish dishes as well as many regional specialties. Start with Tapas; Chopitos [crunchy seafood with mayonnaise dip], good old Abondigas [meat balls in spicy sauce, but served with fries], or Prawns [gambas a la plancha]. For mains can you go past Paella, this one is topped with prawns and mussels? There is also a Spanish Tortilla, so different from the Mexican version, this one being more like an open omelette of potato and egg or the ultimate Spanish cold plate [jamon], and a jug of Sangria, of course! Koloni is a café on Jln. Raya Semat, Canggu. Breakfast is only available in the mornings, something that I always find very strange as in a tourist environment they should always be available all day. However what the do offer is very good. Smoothie Fruit Bowls with dragon fruit, chia seeds, and a variety of fresh fruit. The house special is their Carrot Cake Waffle served with cream cheese and sliced almonds. Eggs any way but very popular is the Poached Eggs on Hash Brown with Halloumi cheese, chimichurri and coriander oil. The lunch menu adds a few mains such as Chicken Beast, Ceviche, Salmon and Pumpkin mash and Cheesecakes for dessert. If you miss California then you will feel at home here!

Rev Bistro is French. Located on Jln. Yudistira, Seminyak it offers classic French plus a few international dishes. Fish Mosseline with Quenelles Lyonnaise, Foie Gras, Mustard Rabbit, Frogs’ Legs and for your steak a decadent Tournedos Rossini [topped with foie gras, drizzled with Madeira sauce]. Dine in the air-con inside or out on the garden terrace. Also the menu is very reasonably priced, and there is a good wine list.
Strawberry Shop is found on Jln. Pancasan, Bedugul. It has its own organic strawberry beds that supply daily fresh produce. Stop for strawberry juice, crepes, waffles, shakes, ice cream and many other combinations. The Melting Pot, Bali’s largest and best sports bar and Texan restaurant, is about to celebrate their 10th anniversary. From a humble beginning up at Kedawatan and now for many years at their bigger location on Pengosekan they have been a trail blazer. I know Texas is supposed to have the biggest of everything but the bar here, on two levels, is definitely the biggest in Bali. Pool tables and other games are available together with many sports screenings, when the major sports are on the place really rocks. On the same day, Sunday March 24, The Melting Pot will also hold their 9th annual Texan Chilli Cook-off. Live bands, and fun for all. They also serve real Texan food; Gumbo, Ribs, Burgers, Sliders and Quesadillas made correctly, nice and spicy.
Rise and Shine Café is on Jln. Padang Linjong, Canggu. As the name suggests it specializes in breakfasts and does them very well. The Breakfast Burrito is the star of the show but there are many other options. A range of breakfast sandwiches stuffed with grilled vegetables, or scrambled egg and bacon and other combos. Bagels are with cream cheese and avocado. Many fruit bowls and otherwise healthy breakfasts. The coffees are great too.
Queens of India in Tandjung Benoa, brought quality Indian cuisine to the Nusa Dua area. The Queens Tandoor Group already had their flagship, Queens Tandoor, in Seminyak and the first Queens of India in front of The Dynasty Hotel in Kartika Plaza. Queens Tandjung Benoa is the first of the group to get a design and menu upgrade, the others are following. The lunch and dinner menu features a wide selection of Koyle ka Kamaal (dishes hot from the Tandoor), together with Murg (chicken specialties), Ghosht (lamb), Samudaree Khazana (fish and prawn), and Bageeche se (from the vegetable garden). Specifically at Queen’s of India, Tanjung Benoa, they also offer a selection of Mumbai Chaat – savoury Indian snacks typically served as street food including Sev Puri, Bhel Puri, Pani Puri and Dahi Puri. Puri is unleavened bread that is deep fried until it puffs up like a round ball, which is golden-brown in colour. Another specialty is the hot vegetarian South Indian cuisine, where rice is combined with lentils and dhal, curried vegetables and pachadi (yogurt) to produce Masala Dosa, Sambhar and Uttapam, all of which are not only healthy but easy on the digestion due to the fermentation process.

School News New playgrounds for Montessori School Bali Construction of two new and exciting playgrounds at Montessori School Bali (MSB) has begun. Monkey bars, a flying fox, tire swings, a climbing gym, movable boxes, balancing planks and more are all set to be part of the final (plastic-free) playgrounds. It sounds like a lot of fun, but as MSB principal Jan Gaffney explains, for children playgrounds are about much more than just letting off steam or burning up some energy. Intelligent playgrounds provide opportunities for children to develop physical strength, coordination and socialisation skills that all have an academic impact as well.
their hand as they write). This is where the humble monkey bars come in. Playing on monkey bars helps a child develop their core strength, shoulders, arms, wrists and fingers. Spending some time each day on monkey bars develops flexibility and coordination, and allows a child to test their limits as they develop confidence physically, while also laying the foundation for great handwriting.
The primary playground meanwhile will boast a flying fox for thrills, coordination and core strenth, monkey bars at two heights plus a climbing jungle gym made of recycled ulin to help children really push their limits. A hexagonal swing set with vertical tires for swings that move into the centre with the potential to connect will provide a group or individual activity. MSB’s Parents and Teachers Association raised money during last year’s Twilight Market to support the playground development. More equipment will be added in a second phase.
“From birth, movement is a human need. As children, we need to challenge ourselves and stretch our limits,” Jan says. “The more we push ourselves to discover what we are capable of, the more control we develop over our bodies and movement, and the more aware we are of our capabilities. This blends over into social and academic areas as well, resulting in more fully rounded people.”
Once complete, parts of the playground will be considered open to children during their three-hour work cycle— another hallmark of the Montessori classroom allowing children to develop the focus required for deep work—not just for play.
Installing playgrounds that challenge children to take reasonable risks, test limits and push their boundaries lets them see what they can do with their bodies so they can develop healthy self-confidence and self-esteem, she says. “Montessori is about pushing a little bit harder in order to see what you are capable of: We do that in our classrooms academically, and we also do it socially and physically. It’s all about growth. A challenging playground that lets you take some risks lets you see that as you get older, you can do more and more.”
planks in between that offer children opportunities to make to their own arrangements will help on this front as well.
A good playground does more than just promote physical health and confidence, too. It also helps academically.
“There’s been an assumption that we don’t need handwriting anymore because we’ve got computers and we should all learn to type instead,” Jan says. “But research is showing that handwriting, and cursive writing in particular, helps develop the brain in an integrated manner, bringing together the left and right hemispheres. Even if we are not using handwriting as much, the ability to learn and use it is helpful to our overall cognitive development.”
For instance, to develop writing, you need core strength, as well as strength in your shoulders, arms, wrists and fingers; you need to be able to sit up straight without leaning on your hands (and you often see children today needing to lean over a desk to support their head with
MSB will have a preschool playground featuring monkey bars, a tower with swings and slide, tires for balancing and old tree trunks arranged for climbing over. The ability to socialise is another skill honed in the playground, and the new playground’s differently sized boxes and cubes with

“Children having difficulty with writing, for example, would be able to spend 10 minutes on the monkey bars and then come back inside to do their handwriting; children’s play is their work,” Jan says. The new playgrounds at MSB will be a lot of fun. But they will be so much more: Intelligently designed and assembled, they will promote children’s self-esteem, encourage essential physical development that has academic benefits, and provide a space for socialisation. * Montessori School Bali accepts enrollments year-round. EDUCATION MATTERS Greetings and welcome to another edition of Education Matters. Delighted to say, my inbox is over flowing with questions and to the many folk who made the effort to contact me, I want you to know that I value your comments and appreciate your needs. Consequently, as a matter of course, I always respond to every question put to me. Bob of Canggu writes, “this morning I sat down with my child and went through the reading book she’d bought home from school. To my horror, she could barely read it! So then, I asked her to say her two times table, she couldn’t get past 3X2!! About now my head was spinning mainly because all the problems she was having, were almost identical to the ones that I too had experienced at school. I’ve always had and still do have problems with literacy and numeracy. Still get particular letters and numbers round the wrong way and my spelling is rubbish! My wife has said on a number of occasions that I may be Dyslexic but I‘ve never been tested. Is it possible my daughter has a Learning Need or even Dyslexia”? Thanks for your candour Bob. You have described a number of issues that indicate you and your child may have Dyslexia. However, first and foremost, it is critical to conduct a Dyslexia Assessment and Evaluation by a qualified Education Specialist. This will eliminate the guesswork and determine exactly what, if anything you/ your child exhibit. Dyslexia is a Learning Need where the brain processes information differently and thereby interprets data received from the eyes atypically. (Not the same way as typical functioning brains do). In my experience, I have over the years, encountered many children and adults who exhibit low levels of Dyslexia. Such as getting the letters “b” and “d”, “p” and “q” round the wrong way and reversing numbers. This can be addressed with consistent and effective Learning Strategies. In this scenario, it is important for everyone to remain calm without causing a fuss that will impact on the child’s desire to learn. Before we go much further, I want to address some of
the myths surrounding Dyslexia namely: 1. It can be cured by swimming with dolphins, jumping on trampolines, coloured eye glasses, submerging the child in a high pressure tank, suspending them upside down or even cranial surgery! Such bizarre and cruel treatments must be called out for what they are, totally fraudulent! Rather, effective Learning Skills must be taught to develop self confidence that will in turn raise the child’s level of motivation to successfully complete academic tasks. 2. It’s a result of poor or neglectful parenting. 3. The child is lazy or trying to avoid Learning Tasks. 4. The child is intellectually “disabled”. 5. There is something wrong with my child’s eyes. 6. A diagnosis of Dyslexia will mean my child will fail academically, restrict them from progressing to university and generally limit their choices in life. I am of the opinion, (regardless if your child has a Learning Need or not) it is imperative for as many adults as possible to take a genuine and consistent interest in your child’s Learning Pathway. I still do come across beautiful home settings where grand parent/s take a passionate and active interest in what and how their children are learning at school. Without doubt, this is probably the most challenging and also rewarding role for any individual, yet the Education of the child must be the Number One Priority! Consider the following: 1. Change your mindset and become a Pro Active Parent when it comes to the Education of you child/children. Namely, GET INVOLVED! Find out when parent/teacher meetings take place and make a point of attending them. 2. Ask questions! If you are unclear as to what is going on at your child’s school or perhaps unsure about what the

school’s expectations of you are, then find out. You’ve got abundant easy to use technology...you know, use the phone part of your hand phone. Talk to someone! 3. Talk to your child often. Sit down and have a conversation to find out what actually happened today at school. (Don’t take yep or nup or dunno as an answer!) Use probing questions, i.e questions that require more than a simple response. 4. Consistently check your child’s Communication Diary or Homework Book. Invariably, your child will have homework so make sure you know exactly what it is and if your child has completed it to the best of their ability. Also, this provides the ideal opportunity for you to monitor your child’s academic progress to see if he/she has not grasped a particular concept. 5. Be the parent you always dreamed of being or at least be the one you never had. (Rather obvious I know, but it needs to be said). Finally, my homily for this edition of Education Matters is: “ If you can read this, thank a teacher!”

TOKO BUKU Reviews of English language books on Indonesia
Curious Encounters of the Human Kind: Borneo True Asian Tales of Folly, Greed, Ambition and Dreams Curious Encounters: Borneo, a collection of observances, polemical essays, flights of fantasy, keen observations and learned discussions, is a crash introduction to the physical, economic and political realities of Borneo - the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak; the small territory ruled by the Sultan of Brunei and the four Indonesian provinces that make up the southern three quarters of the island. American author Paul Spencer Sochaczewski has spent over 40 years traveling in Southeast Asia. In 1969, he visited Sarawak at age 22 when he took a life-changing tour of duty with the U.S. Peace Corp, assisting non-American primary school teachers. Later he worked with the WWF on campaigns to protect rainforests and biological diversity. An inveterate traveler, this worldly and perspicacious writer demystifies Borneo’s culture and history. His book is filled with stories of doomed orangutans, unforgivable crimes against nature and human rights, corrupt government leaders, voracious timber merchants, insatiable oil palm plantation owners, plus several feel good humorous stories of human foibles, ambition and achievement. The events, characters and settings in the book take place on both sides of the border between Kalimantan and East Malaysia; sometimes overlapping, other times intermingling. One such story is The Search for Ali, the teenage assistant who helped Alfred Russell Wallace during his adventures around Southeast Asia and who never received the credit he deserved. Without Ali’s assistance, it’s unlikely that Wallace would’ve ever been successful in his 8-year journey that culminated in his development of the Theory of Natural Selection. Headhunters Fight Control of the Forests dives into the underlying causes of the 2001 massacre of some 500 Madurese transmigrants by roving gangs of Dayaks. The author convincingly explains that these ethnic-specific killings were actually a fight for control of the island’s natural resources, but fails to explain why only the people from Madura Island were specifically targeted while their Javanese and Balinese migrant neighbors were left alone by the marauders.
by Paul Spencer Sochaczewski
The Literate Orangutan is a first-class discussion of this complex and e n d e a r i n g p r i m a t e ’s intelligence and physical dexterity. These all too human animals exhibit human emotions, intellect, the ability to acquire language and to form close relationships with humans. Although some 40,000 survive on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, habitat loss, illegal logging, fire and poaching are all taking their toll. The hard truth is that in another 20 years there will be no more orangutans living in the wild. Why Travel Far? is a wistful ode to boyish wanderlust. In the story, the writer/narrator searches for adventure in the jungles of Kalimantan that would be “modestly dangerous.” As is his wont, Paul digresses to the larger question of what propels a man to seek adventure in foreign lands. Bruno and the Blowpipes is only tangentially about Bruno Manser who waged a passionate and ultimately fatal war to protect Borneo’s rainforests from loggers. His body nor any of his personal effects have ever been found. We learn that this lone Swiss activist is destined to become an unsolved Asian mystery like the disappearances of Michael Rockefeller in the Asmat region of West New Guinea in 1961 and Thailandbased silk entrepreneur Jim Thompson’s disappearance in Malaysia’s Cameroon Highlands in 1967. As one of his favorite writers, Sochaczewski set out to follow in Somerset Maugham’s footsteps. Surfing with Somerset recounts his attempt to surf the same break that Maugham wrote about in 1921 when his boat capsized in a tidal bore in Sarawak. The height of the rolling tide on this section of the Batang Lupar River can reach a frothy and dangerous two
meters. Moreover, this is a region of man-eating 4-m-long saltwater crocodiles. Krumbling Kratons tells of the first rajah of Borneo - not James Brooke, but Alexander Hare who was guilty of unhinged despotism, flagrant disregard for British colonial law and sexual excesses in which his seat of power - Banjarmasin in the southern part of the island - was reduced to poverty, disorder and unprofitability. This is an entertaining, free-wheeling and fantastical discourse on the foibles of nation-building, the cruelty and the capriciousness of monarchs and people in high places, with offshoot discussions on the Knights Templar and a portrait of an imposter. In The (Almost) Last Shaman, a manang (traditional healer) of the Iban tribe, one of the last of his kind, chases away malevolent spirits, makes the ill well again and protects people from ghosts. In this story, Sochaczewski dispels a few misconceptions, explains popular folklore and urban legends, Dayak cosmology, discusses traditional vs. modern culture and the shaman’s placebo-like efficacy in treating maladies. Like few other contemporary travel books, Curious Encounters: Borneo is a rare and revealing window on how and why Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan have played hosts to a painful and unceasing stew of environmental and social destruction, rampant deforestation, government scorn of tribal land rights and brown-on-brown colonialism. These are captivating tales of dreams unfulfilled, opportunities missed and unproven theories that pose tantalizing questions. Curious Encounters of the Human Kind Borneo by Paul Spencer Sochaczewski, Explorer’s Eye Press 2016, ISBN978-294-057-3103, 183 pages, dimensions 13.5 cmx20 cm. Then we started selling more and more and then people [started saying things] like, Oh, your fork looks funny. We kept open to feedback [from customers] and finally found designs [that everyone liked]. I was [making the cutlery and cases] in my free time. My house was turning into chaos. Then my husband basically said you need to move. So I bit the bullet and decided to rent a space and hire six people at the beginning. BA: How many people do you have now? Y: Now we have 30 staff starting six months ago. BA: Did you plan to hire disabled people? [About 20% of her workers are disabled].
BA: What marketing do you do? Y: (Laughs) We have zero marketing, except Instagram. [She is so busy that the only time she can find to post on Instagram is while she’s in the loo each morning.] BA: Do you have any new products planned? Y: I’m planning to make water bottles, because everything that’s available in the market is from China. I have nothing against China. But I have to think about the carbon footprint because if I buy [products] from there, I don’t know exactly how they made it, I don’t know exactly how they treated their workers. I don’t know how they mine the [materials]. BA: You can’t follow the supply chain.
Y: No, we found each other and they have such a strong work ethic. They’re no different from anyone [else]. Whoever show ups and can do the job [I will hire]. BA: What’s your workplace like? Y: It’s really important to build a good work culture. There’s always issues between staff [but at Yasminida Bali] no one is allowed to talk behind each other’s backs. No one is allowed to make sarcastic jokes, no sexual jokes. I’m basically implementing a family mindset. Also, every role is very important to make an excellent high quality product – no one is more important than anyone else. It’s kind of encouraging everyone to take ownership and responsibility [across the company]. BA: Can you tell me how you got started? Y: Plastic waste is becoming a serious problem in Indonesia. And so about four years ago, I’m starting to really embody change, really cut down my plastic consumption. I don’t use single-use plastic anymore. When I go shopping, I bring my own bags. Indonesia doesn’t really have a waste system. So everyone’s telling us don’t litter, don’t throw garbage and don’t consume plastic, but we’re not being provided with any solutions. BA: Where do you sell your products? I [wanted to] create an impact on the [plastic problem.] An old boss showed me a wooden reusable cutlery set she got in India. She thought we should make it in Bali, but then I saw them in the market everywhere. There’s nothing special about it. But then my creativity kicked in and I said, Oh, what if I make a casing from beautiful fabric? I think people will like that. I thought about bamboo [for the cutlery]. We’ve been using bamboo for centuries [in Indonesia]. It’s sustainable. So I chose bamboo as our main material. [We use a] special food grade coating [for the utensils]. I started buying it from a company that has FDA approval and they gave us lessons on how to use it. [So I had a product] that is not really available in the market. The whole [first] year was just trial and error finding the right material [for the cases] because we practice zerowaste. Everything was an experiment. So we got any scraps or leftover material [from other companies]. I think the first year we were still trying to create an identity. Now I’m more confident saying that we are a sustainable company.
Y: People can come and visit [our facility]. We have nothing to hide, and everyone can see what we’re doing. We’re running an ethical, sustainable and fair trade company. [They sell through KAFE, Bali Buda and other outlets]. Whatever I do, I [try to ] create an impact in environmental ways. So I’m providing alternative options to single use plastic, something that you can reuse multiple times. And making things really high quality. Whatever we made we want it last for years and we also provide a warranty [for our products].
Y: Yes, all these elements you need to know when you call yourself a sustainable eco friendly company. You have to know every aspect; you cannot just have the slogan of eco friendly. You really have to be able to walk the talk. I refuse to buy anything that comes from overseas, if I can source it locally. Or we make it ourselves. There are a few things that we want to make it in the near future. Like machines [for production]. At the moment, the majority of machines come from overseas. And it will actually cut down a lot of costs in the end. At the moment, we source our batik locally in Bali. But, about 70% of the material in the market, comes from China, even the ones sold here Indonesia. But, you know, honestly, the textile industry is the most damaging industry. So we have to be really careful, know who we work with. When I find new suppliers, I talk with them. I don’t want to work with a supplier who is using cheap labor. I want to make sure [their workers] have a good working space and stuff like that. We also print ourselves; we probably will have to do it ourselves in the future, making our own fabric. [We are looking into new suppliers] using natural tie-dye, organic fabric, and dyes made from plants. Before any of this, I was really in love with textiles. I love textiles and I think Indonesia is so rich with textiles. I want to travel around Indonesia and buy all kinds of textiles and make products from it and tell stories about every tribe, as [a lot of these traditions are dying out]. Yasminida Bali’s website is http://www.yasminida.com and their Instagram page is https://www.instagram.com/ yasminidabali/.
BA: That’s unusual in Indonesia. Can you tell me more? Y: If you buy our products, one year down the line it’s broken, we give you a replacement. [We design our products] so we can recycle them. We want to make things sustainable. Also, if [past the warranty], you can return it to us and we’ll give you 50% off a new one. We want people to really change their habits, not get used to throwing things away.

Kulture Kid Communication Conundrum It’s no secret that many people in Bali are poor communicators. This is only exemplified in a world where many cultures expect instant reactions and instant results. These differences lead to a clash of cultures between foreigners and locals in Bali because a lack of clear communication leads to misunderstandings, frustration and both sides taking offence. This is not simply due to language difficulties, but also due to assumptions made by the people at either end of the communication. Using communication platforms such as SMS, Whatsapp and Line can only add to these misunderstandings, amplified by the fact that the sender can see when the recipient has read the message. So if there is no response, a question is raised: “Why?” This is a reason foreigners are often labeled as pushy, overbearing and demanding; even though they don’t mean to appear this way: fluid communication is the norm in the West, whereas here it can be seen as something that puts people under pressure, therefore negative.

Even expats who have lived in Bali for many decades still feel frustration when dealing with public officials or people in a hierarchical system (for example, a school, a village committee etc). The most common complaint is about Indonesian men. I’ve been trying to work out why this is and I have a number of theories after discussing with a few locals: 1. They don’t know how to answer because they don’t know the solution; 2. They don’t want to be bothered answering because they have other “more important” things to do; 3. They don’t’ know the solution but they want to try first behind the scenes before they answer; 4. They don’t want to work even though they are getting a (nowadays, relatively good) salary to do their job, i.e. a form of corruption; 5. Males are slower to adapt to newer forms of communication and technology compared with their female counterparts (this is particularly true with social media); 6. Males often use social media and communication platforms as a form of entertainment or humour: for example, sending pornographic images and video unrelated to a particular group or forum they are in.

As Bali slowly globalizes and the demands for quick and reliable communication increase, I believe these issues will slowly disappear – if for no other reason than it will mean that the poor communicators will get too far left behind. Local News Corpses piling up at Bali hospitals due to ban on cremations during Panca Wali Krama ceremonies The Panca Wali Krama, a rare series of ceremonies that reportedly occurs only once in ten years, is well underway at Bali’s Mother Temple, Pura Besakih. The Balinese say that the ceremonies are carried out in order to re-balance the natural environments of the island. And it seems that, with Mount Agung’s recent rumblings, the deluge of waste washing up on our shores, and the earthquakes that Bali and our neighboring island of Lombok have been experiencing, it’s long overdue. But in order for spiritual energy to be focused on the matter at hand, ngaben (traditional Balinese cremation ceremonies) have been suspended until April 4, according to a report by Bali Post. And that is causing some issues at Bali’s hospitals.
Several of the island’s regional general hospitals (RSUD) have become inundated with dead bodies. According to an article in Nusa Bali, the morgue at Tabanan Hospital is already full. “The maximum capacity in the mortuary is 6, because there are 6 freezers, but now there are 11 [bodies],” explained Gusti Nyoman Sadia Wirka, the head of the hospital’s mortuary. Sanjiwani General Hospital in Gianyar and Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar are also quickly filling up, with around 75 percent of their spaces already occupied, according to an article by detiknews. Presumably, the ban has had a financial impact on the families of the deceased too, with body storage at these two hospitals ranging from IDR150,000 (US$10.63) per day for basic storage to IDR305,000 (US$21.61) for freezer space. For the Balinese, ngaben offers an opportunity for the soul of the deceased to be released into the ‘upper realm’ where it can wait to be reborn. And this philosophy coincides with one of the main reasons for the cremation ban; that the impure air during the huge ceremony would not allow for the soul to be freed as desired. “In Bali, every time there is a big ceremony like the Krama Panca Wali, it is believed that if a person dies, his spirit cannot be freed because the environment is not yet clean. After the Besakih ceremony, the air of sanctity can be guaranteed,” explained Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, the chairman of the PHDI Hindu group, as quoted in detiknews. [Coconuts Bali March 1, 2019] Tax office gets data of Indonesian wealth in 65 countries The tax office has obtained information about the wealth of Indonesian nationals that is deposited in financial institutions in 65 countries. After joining 120 countries in the Automatic Exchange of Information in 2018, the tax office has obtained information about the wealth of Indonesian nationals that is deposited in financial institutions in 65 countries, according to the Finance Ministry’s Taxation Directorate General. Taxation Director General Robert Pakpahan said the tax office was scrutinizing the data. “We are cross-checking the data with tax identification numbers,” Robert said as reported by kompas.com.
He said the verification process was being carried out very carefully and the office would not immediately publish a list of Indonesians who kept their wealth abroad. “We believe that the clarification of taxpayer data should be implemented carefully,” Robert said, adding that after the process was complete, the tax office would send the findings to the people in question who should follow it up with the tax office. He declined to mention the countries that had revealed the wealth of Indonesian nationals. He also did not mention the value of the wealth. He said he would be happy if all the wealth had been included in the relevant documents that had been submitted to the office. During the tax amnesty from July 2016 to March 2017, Rp 4.8 quadrillion (US$345.24 billion) was declared by wealthy Indonesians, Rp 3.8 quadrillion of which was kept in Indonesia while Rp 1 quadrillion was kept in other countries. However, according to the Tax Justice Network, at least $331 billion is parked overseas, a much higher figure than the Rp 145 trillion in overseas funds that were repatriated. 16 Australian man jailed for drug offences in Bali An Australian man and his Indonesian girlfriend have each been sentenced in a Bali court to five years and four months in prison on drug offences. Brendon Johnsson, from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, and his partner Remi Purwanti, both 43, were arrested last August, caught with 11.6 grams of cocaine separated into 13 plastic bags. During the trial, former drug addict Johnsson provided a written statement to the judges in which he took full responsibility for his actions. “I sit here a broken man, a regretful and remorseful man - but also a sober man, a changed man,” he said, according to News Corp. The couple was yesterday sentenced to five years’ jail and each fined 800 million rupiah ($A79,360) or an additional two months in prison. Presiding Judge I Ketut Kimiarsa said the panel of judges had exercised leniency because the defendants didn’t have criminal records and had expressed regret for their crime. However, he said the crime was still considered serious because it went against the Indonesian government’s program to combat the spread of narcotics and damaged the country’s reputation as a top tourist destination. Johnsson and Purwanti won’t appeal the decision. The couple had initially faced a possible death sentence when they were arrested, with police seeking to have them charged with drug dealing. Johnsson’s stepfather, Ashley Robinson, thanked the Indonesian justice system for sparing his stepson’s life. He said Johnsson, who has lived in Bali for about four years, is now drug-free after decades of addiction.
“Brendon has been addicted to drugs since he was 16, we always knew we were going to get a phone call and we did. He has to pay the price for what he has done. He has to get his head down now, do his time, be a good prisoner and be productive in there,” Mr. Robinson said outside court, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. “The Indonesians have given him a chance to get on with the rest of his life, after he has served his time for breaking the law. He is a different person, he is in prison but he is a different person. He’s thinking clearly.” Johnsson, who will serve his time in Bali’s infamous Kerobokan prison, is the latest Australian found guilty in recent years of drug offences in Indonesia. In 2015, Bali Nine ringleaders Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were executed by Indonesian authorities. [9news.com.au February 28, 2019]
Bali deputy governor criticizes Sandiaga Uno’s plan to develop halal tourism Vice-presidential candidate Sandiaga Uno has not had the easiest of runs during his recent tour of Bali. First, Tabanan village elders refused point blank to let him speak in their community on Sunday, and now Bali authorities are abruptly dismissing his vision to develop halal tourism on the island. Sandiaga, who is the running mate to presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, put forward his proposal during a speech at Hotel Alkyfa in Denpasar on Sunday, citing the potentially huge economic benefits of catering to Muslim tourists. “We want Bali, and Indonesia in general, to take the potential of halal tourism which is believed to be worth more than IDR. 3,000 trillion (about US$214 billion). This is extraordinary potential for economic growth in Bali,” he said, as quoted by detiknews. He expressed a hope for Indonesia to follow suit from other countries in the region already promoting Muslim-friendly tourism though halal-certified restaurants and halal hotels. Unsurprisingly, Cok Ace, the deputy Governor of Bali, publicly rejected Sandiaga’s idea. “The concept of halal tourism is not in accordance with the potential, character, and branding of Bali tourism which has been known worldwide all this time,” he said last night, as quoted by Jawa Pos. “If the concept is forced on Bali it will cause a decline in Bali tourism,’ he added. Though he acknowledged that halal tourism worked well in destinations that have a cultural closeness with Middle Eastern culture, he reiterated that Bali is not one of
those destinations. Instead, he highlighted tourism statistics from the past few years indicating that the highest volumes of tourists coming into Bali were from China, Australia, the UK, France, Japan, Korea, India, America, Germany, and the Netherlands. “This is the market potential that we must keep and develop,” he explained. He also spoke of Bali’s unique cultural character and natural attractions, a feature that Governor Wayan Koster has been pushing to promote and develop lately. “This branding could be damaged if we develop a tourism concept that does not match the uniqueness of Balinese culture, for example, halal tourism,” he concluded. British gran on death row in Bali abandons legal battle to avoid firing squad A British grandmother on death row in Bali for smuggling drugs has given up her fight to avoid execution and says she is no longer scared of facing a firing squad. Lindsay Sandiford, 62, was sentenced to death in 2013 after she was caught with 10lb of cocaine on a flight from Bangkok to Bali. In her sixth year on death row, the drug mule has revealed that she has abandoned her legal battle to avoid a death sentence. The gran, originally from Redcar in North Yorkshire, said in a jailhouse interview that being executed by firing squad “won’t be a hard thing for me to face anymore”. Sandiford’s two young granddaughters, aged one and six, recently flew to Bali from the UK and visited her at the island’s notorious Kerobokan prison, known ironically as Hotel K. She told MailOnline she feels “blessed”, even though she has been sentenced to death in Indonesia, because she has seen her two sons grow up and she has met her grandchildren. Facing the prospect of death by firing squad, she said: “It won’t be a hard thing for me to face anymore. “It’s not particularly a death I would choose but then again I wouldn’t choose dying in agony from cancer either. “I do feel I can cope with it. But when it happens I don’t want my family to come. I don’t want any fuss at all. The one thing certain about life is no one gets out alive.” She added: “My attitude is ‘If you want to shoot me, shoot me. Get on with it’.” Sandiford said she spends her days knitting clothes and toys for her granddaughters, charities and church groups in a cramped cell measuring five metres by five metres (16ft by 16ft) that she shares with four other women prisoners. She keeps photos of her granddaughters next to her bed in her cell, and has expressed regret that she cannot be a full-time grandmother. Well-wishers had raised more than £40,000 for a final appeal, with the money spent on a succession of Indonesian lawyers and legal assistants, it was reported.
Now grey-haired, Sandiford said she doesn’t want to deal with another lawyer after being “burnt enough times”, and she doesn’t want help from the Foreign Office. The grandmother is said to suffer from arthritis and has difficulty walking. A date for her execution has not been set. Sandiford, who has no previous convictions, had previously launched an unsuccessful appeal to block her execution. She has continuously claimed she was forced by a UK-based drugs syndicate to smuggle the drugs to protect her son who she claims was being threatened. Just over 10lbs of cocaine was found in her luggage after she stepped off a Thai Airways flight in December 2012. Sandiford was sentenced to death even though she cooperated with police in a sting to arrest people higher up in the syndicate. She has said her sentence was “unjustly harsh”, and she was supported by celebrities and human rights groups as she tried to overturn it. If and when the sentence is carried out, Sandiford will be transferred to Nusa Kambangan, known as Execution Island, and killed by a firing squad at midnight. She said she isn’t afraid of dying, and the worst thing will be the humiliation of being paraded in front of Indonesia’s press before being executed. [Mirror.co.uk February 22, 2019]

Letters To Bali Advertiser Dear Sir/Madam, Re: Bali Advertiser 11-24 October 2017 - The Frugal Balinist - Don’t pay surcharge! Along with the Bali Advertiser many other media outlets in 2017 and 2018 carried articles on how BI (Bank Indonesia) in Regulations 11/11/PBI/2011 and amended Regulation 14/2/PBI/2012 prohibits merchants from applying a surcharge for credit card transactions. I have studied both regulations online at the BI website. I found no such thing. In the former dated regulation only one Chapter specifically deals with the position of the merchant in a transaction using credit, debit and ATM cards. Acquirers (banks and non-banks) issuing these ‘cards’ are to terminate cooperation with merchants engaging in possibly fraudulent actions. My point is that nowhere are these ‘fraudulent actions’ defined. I think this constitutes a weakness in the law. Does any reader have a link to what constitutes ‘fraudulent actions’ as defined by BI? Does BI have a right in Indonesia to interfere in a business transaction seemingly acceptable to both parties? Regards, Paul Neumann (indostocks@gmail.com) Post, e-mail or bring in your letters. Please address all to Letters To Bali Advertiser. Bali Advertiser will decide what to publish and will edit as needed C/CE/I-07 Nov 18

Much to the delight of local charities like Bali Mother & Baby House and Bali Pet Crusaders, the trend has continued!
James Cook Sports Bar has a capacity for 50 and punters are drawn to the evenings by The Cook’s cold beers, great food and an opportunity to prove they’re ‘smarter than your average 5th grader’ plus the possibility of a prize along the way! A recent quiz evening in support of Bali Pet Crusaders saw some winners walk away with a Quad Biking voucher from Bali Island ATV! If you know of any Bali based organisations needing an injection of funds and a chance to raise awareness about what they do, give the crew at The Cook a call on 0813 3892 0430 or email: jamescooksportsbar@gmail.com
Community Awareness Reaps Awards They do say charity begins at home and this was never more evident than at Now! Bali Magazine’s 10th anniversary dinner at the Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort on February 13. Much more than just a celebration of the magazine’s decade of publication, the evening was also an opportunity to recognise the charitable efforts and contributions from businesses across the island community that have served to make Bali a better place! The awards identified a range of community minded efforts such as preservation of traditional values, creating employment opportunities for disadvantaged communities, active social responsibility in environmental management, empowerment of local farmers, community and industry, conservation of an endangered Balinese species, promotion of local arts and culture
and support of local charities to name but a few! Appearing in impressive company, Finns was extremely honoured to receive a Community Achievement Award in appreciation of their continuous support for local charities; specifically their ongoing fundraising and volunteer work with local humanitarian NGO, Solemen Indonesia. The award specifically recognised Finns support for Solemen via their fundraising efforts at last year’s Melbourne Cup luncheon, as well as ongoing, annual assistance to the local charity by way of donations and urgently needed supplies. BOOMER CORNER Only Connect....
Boomer & Millennial - Hear the Centennials! This Boomer/Millennial business, by which I mean the arbitrary dividing up of people into 18-year cohorts including GenXer’s and now Centennials, is useful in many ways, but... can create as much heat, as it does light. A positive aspect of this semantic ageism is to provide a catalyst for people to transcend generational boundaries that have not only always existed, but actually remove some of the venom, presaging the generational war that threatens. A friend of mine, born in the first wave of Boomers, tells me she is moved to form a small group in Bali of women from varying age groups. A talented designer and a woman of some character, but not an inveterate networker or joiner of groups, I asked her why?
historic impatience of youth who feel the way forward is blocked by their seniors, who hang onto wealth and power, and the resentment of their elders, who fear their own inevitable marginalisation. Add to this the turbo-charged nature of technical progress and the existential threat to our planet we now face, is it any wonder a nasty note of rancour pervades much of the interaction online between Boomers and Millennials? In the parallel societies we have created there is less and less genuine contact between generations. Boomers think Millennials are ungrateful, have it easy, are arrogant and entitled. Millennialls think the Boomers are greedy, selfindulgent and/or criminally irresponsible. They blame Boomers for all the social, political and environmental problems we are dumping into their lap.
“Oh, a number of good reasons and intuitions that have come to me recently”, she said. “But really it is the gifts that people at different stages in their lives have for each other that I see so clearly is what’s needed. Particularly now, when there are so many ways, old and new, that separate us, rather than acquaint us”. Her words must have struck a chord because a few days later I came across a report in an English newspaper, which resonated. Thirteen years ago Romilly Saumarez Smith, an English woman living in Stepney, East London, was diagnosed with a neurological disease that left her paralysed from the neck down. It was a particularly cruel stroke of fate for someone whose life had consisted of making things. Following a long career as a bookbinder Saumarez Smith had turned to jewellery design in the late 1990s. For five years Saumarez Smith endured in a state of depression and grief, believing she was incapable of ever creating again. What saved her was a strong visual memory and the realisation that she could still design in her mind, to the extent that she could see and tweak her work as if it were on a computer screen. What remained was to find the hands to unlock these creations. Remarkably she was able to find the way to do this and for the past decade has worked in close collaboration with a contemporary and two younger women, also jewellery designers, forming an intuitionally creative quartet that through description and empathy bring the Saumarez Smith creations into being. It is a remarkable and successful collaboration enriching the creative work of all four women. “Thank you for that”, said my friend when I passed it on to her. “That’s exactly the kind of thing I mean. It is the exchange of energy and expertise between elder and younger that brings these unforeseen gifts”. There is a dark side to this naming of groups too. The
While I’m not a Boomer, as a War Baby I might just as well be, and I reckon the Millennials have got it a lot more right than we have. After all it happened on our watch. The world is a hell of a lot tougher and more complex now than ever it was for Boomers. That great historian of post-war Europe, Tony Judt born in 1948, had it right when he said “my generation has been catastrophic”. Columnist Geoffrey Wheatcroft writing in the Guardian observed “if there is any hope at all, it must be that our crappy generation can slink away in shame and let a younger generation see if they can handle things better”. How was it that after two of the most horrific wars ever fought endured by our fathers and mothers, whose sacrifice had bequeathed us 35 years of unparalleled social progress and broad-based wealth creation, did we blow it in a few short decades to the point we’re at now? How and why did so many of us sell out or acquiesce in the bait and switch cons offered by the likes of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan and the people and organisations that funded them? It wasn’t as if we weren’t warned. Whether by commission or omission we Boomer men are guilty as charged. Margaret Thatcher excepted, I think Boomer women can be exonerated, busy as they were completing their own emancipation. Sorry, I’m afraid to say that ‘at least we gave you rock & roll’ doesn’t cut it (it’s not true anyway.... most of you were into Elton John or Fleetwood Mac).
If there is hope that even at this late stage it may be possible to squeak through without a totally dystopic world following global wars and a 70 percent cull, it is the result of the altogether wonderful sight of a 30-year old Millennial, Dutchman Rutger Bregman, and a 16-year old Centennial Swedish schoolgirl - Greta Thunberg, speaking the unvarnished truth on climate change and taxation to the tenured sycophants and filthy rich at Davos. Not only did they both do it at Davos but dished it out straight to Fox News and the UN as well. Boomers, Millenials... something is shifting, bestir yourselves! If nothing else, go see the recent clips of Bregman and Thunberg at Davos on youtube. With young people like this on the job, there has to be hope for your grandchildren’s future. Time, money and yes..., your tarnished wisdom is needed for the cause. After banging on in this vein my friend said gently, “yes, you’re right of course, but I think what really matters in the long run is for small groups of people of different ages to come together locally to get to know each other, understand and support each other. It’s not about good causes per se, it’s about relating to people you wouldn’t otherwise know, or only know superficially and maybe making a difference to each other. I’m convinced it all flows upward from there.” A somewhat deflated quote from George Eliot’s Middlemarch that seems appropriate comes to mind: “...the effect on those around is incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.” Should anyone wish to learn more of the proposed group, which will probably comprise up to 30 English-speaking women of any nationality who will meet once a month, please feel free to contact the writer who will pass on your communication to the organiser.

Beauty & Health Sound Healing In The Pyramids Of Chi Since the dawn of history, hundreds of pyramids have been discovered on every continent of the world on land and even under the sea. No one knows exactly how many. They come in many sizes and of a great variety of ages. Now Bali is home to two located in Ubud. These two are relatively new, only open for less than two years.
After coming into the café, which has delicious food and desserts I discovered who Peter was and approached him. He’s very friendly and enthusiastic about people’s responses after being in the pyramid. He explained that hundreds of people have had profound experiences, many emerging in tears and emotional breakthroughs.
In 2013 Peter McIntosh had a vision during a mediation to create two pyramids in Ubud. After four years of many challenges and testing of faith and patience the project was complete and put into full operation in March 2017. The pyramids were built as a state of the art sound healing and relaxation experience. The pyramids were created through the combination of ancient sounds, Sacred Geometry design, polar positioning, pyramid power and the ever-present energy of Bali.
I returned again a month later with my boyfriend who was very skeptical but agreed to come for the experience. When we emerged a little over an hour later, he exclaimed “That was the deepest and most phenomenal experience I’ve ever had. I really flew out into outer space. It was like a cleansing of the soul.”
In the first 2 years of opening over 35,000 visitors will have come to the pyramids for sound healing. The reaction from the public has been amazing and the ripple effect of visitors going off to tell others has had a staggering impact on the growth of visitor numbers and continues to do so.
clean much faster, and especially plants to grow faster. They are the first nation to apply commercial use of the Pyramidal structure to great effect. After hearing about the pyramids in Ubud I felt drawn to go check them out. I took my friend along who lives in Ubud, who had heard good things about them. The two pyramids sit majestically surrounded by a moat of water and beautiful gardens stretching out in the distance. The larger Pyramid of Sun is a stunning 14 meter gold painted Pyramid built to 1/16th scale to the Great Pyramid of Giza. At 11am and 3 pm every day one of their famous Ancient Sound Healing sessions take place with a large number of visitors from around the world.
Peter & his wife Lynn are both trained Gong Masters and have a wealth of experience helping people achieve the ultimate in sound healing and relaxation through sound therapy. Pyramids were originally believed to be designed as tombs as in Egypt, however, recent research suggest that the structures have another purpose. The many theories have yet to be proven but what is known is the amazing mathematical precision and the Northern Polar alignment with which all the pyramids were built. All the Ancient Pyramids around the world are built according to the Golden Ratio or something called “Sacred Geometry”. The Golden Ratio otherwise known as Phi is present in all of nature, the universe and in the human body down to our DNA. It is also present in the harmonic structure of sound. This offers a possible explanation as to why sound and Pyramids are so effective in harmonizing and balancing our being because they mirror the harmonic structure of the universe themselves and resonate that into our being when we are exposed to it. Pyramid Power is well accepted today and the Russian government even built a set of pyramids outside of Moscow to research this phenomenon. They discovered that simply placing a pyramid structure over an oil well could purify the oil by up to 30% or enable radioactive materials to become
At 3pm a group of about forty people were ushered into a room and seated. Kevin, one of the facilitators greeted the international group and explained the concept of the sound healing that we were about to experience. A large gong sat in the corner as an example of one of the many instruments that would be used during the session. He advised us to simply relax and set an intention for ourselves with an open mind. Then everyone moved to the golden pyramid and were invited in. There were a large number of mattresses arranged around the square room which was dimly lit and infused with incense. Each mattress had a head pillow and bolster to place under the knees while lying on it. We had also been gifted an interesting Eye Pillow filled with Obsidian Lava Sand from the sacred Mt Batur to place over our eyes if we preferred complete darkness. On entering the Pyramid we did as Kevin had suggested and proceeded to mattresses we felt drawn to. After everyone was lying down with our eyes covered, Kevin led us in some deep breathing to promote relaxation. Then the magic began - gongs, drums, didgeridoos, tinkling chimes, Tibetan bowls and an assortment of other instruments were heard around the room. My scattered thoughts calmed as I sank deeper into a relaxed state. I was in a state of timelessness and eventually drifted off to slumber land. In the stillness of the room people around me began to stir. At the end of the session I lazily sat up and looked at my friend beside me who had a dreamy expression on her face. We smiled at one another and slowly rose to our feet. “I fell asleep.” She said quietly. “So did I.”

Within hours I realized that the experience had really opened his mind to new possibilities. He now wants to bring his sons to the pyramids when they come to visit him in Bali. Besides the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon is devoted to more intimate sound healing experiences, meditation, breath and movement with sound, Cacao ceremonies, as well as a new and futuristic form of Sound Healing - Acoustic Bio resonance. The claims by many about pyramids are as diverse as healing the body of disease, increased energy, improved memory and eyesight, quieting the mind, and enabling a deep state of relaxation. Peter & Lynn have also heard many other claims from guests who have experienced the power inside the Pyramids of Chi and go on to spread this word about such a unique experience. It is well worth the visit to the Pyramids of Chi.

MONEY MATTERS Why Bank Robberies are Down Have you read or watched reports of bank robberies recently? I have seen no statistics and in truth do not know if it is actually true but the impression I get is that bank robberies, whether commongarden ones or those that are the stuff of Hollywood movies are now few and far between. It could be partly due to banks’ increased security, the ubiquitous CCTV cameras etc. But it is more likely due to the fact that robbers no longer need to put their lives and freedom at risk by their physical presence in the bank when it is far easier and safer to rob banks or more likely their customers from the comfort of their homes which could be in Nigeria, Russia, Nether Wallop or anywhere else in the world. Yes, the invention of the Internet has brought huge disruption and great opportunities to the way we live and do business. But as with all inventions it has provided criminals with a new and much easier way to transfer other people’s wealth into their own coffers. Expats are particularly easy targets and are generally less protected than people living in their home countries. So how do they rob banks? The more sophisticated criminals have succeeded in breaching some banks’ security systems but their customers are far easier targets. Apart from identity theft and the ‘skimming’ of ATM cards there is the more sophisticated art of ‘phishing’. This involves the setting up of a fake website made to look identical to a bank’s actual website. To ensnare victims cyber robbers will send out thousands of e-mails purporting to come from the bank urging recipients to click on a link to their website to access urgent information about their account. Of course most recipients will not even have an account with that bank so they will ignore it but those that do have an account will be quite concerned and are likely to promptly click on the link. Close examination would show the website address is very slightly different from the genuine address but this can easily
be missed. Once into the website the customer will be asked to confirm security details and hey presto, the information is now in the fraudster’s hands. So simple. Some years ago I took a call on my office landline from my bank in the UK. Or at least the person said he was calling from the bank. He asked me if I was interested in moving my deposit into a product paying a higher rate of interest. I said I might be interested so he said first of all he needed to ask me a few security questions. This is normal procedure of course when you call your bank. But I was not calling my bank; the bank was calling me. So I pointed out to the caller that I needed him to prove his and the bank’s identity first by answering a few of my own security questions. He hung up. Who pays when your account gets raided as a result of a scam? It depends. Usually the bank will pick up the tab if you have been fooled as a result of a ‘skimming’ device placed in an ATM or if you are the victim of a sophisticated scam. But if you have been negligent or careless in the eyes of the bank, such as allowing others to see or know your PIN number, password or other security details they have every right to refuse reimbursement. It is at their discretion and usually comes down to reasonableness. If they hold you responsible for the losses it would take a long uphill battle to force them to change their decision. In the worst case scenario you could lose all the money in your account. One way to reduce the impact of such a disaster is to spread the risk by having several bank accounts. But taking great care to protect security details, PIN numbers etc is the best way to keep the risk down. Check your accounts online frequently and question any anomalies. What about credit card fraud? This is massive and harder to prevent. Credit card slips can easily be copied and PIN numbers memorised by rogue employees. A client once reported that he had a false debit charged to his brand new credit card. But he had used it only
once and that was to pay for services at a photocopying shop! So the culprit was easily identified. In fairness to the banks most have now developed stronger security systems, including the immediate transmission to customers’ mobile phones of every transaction so that they can be alerted immediately of any unauthorised transactions. Credit card PIN numbers are now meant to be used universally but I find I am still offered the choice of PIN or signature in both Jakarta and Bali. Again, the bank will decide whether to pick up the tab or not, depending on whether they decide the loss was due to your carelessness. The solution again is to take great care of your card and PIN number and to have more than one card (but not too many!) so you still have access to credit should one card be blocked. Beware of the Internet ‘jungle’ Losses incurred by banks represent just a fraction of losses that can be linked directly to or with the assistance of the Internet. They include stolen identities via e-mail providers and social media channels, scams on the Internet, fake or misleading advertisements, pension fraud (a big problem in the UK), investment scams to mention a few. Don’t feel embarrassed if you have been a victim of one. Our industry professionals have been duped as well and I know cases where lawyers and even a retired High Court judge have been taken for a ride. No room today to go into more detail but I hope to share these examples with you in future articles to help you recognise the warning signs and avoid falling into the same traps. In the meantime, take a close look at the addresses of any strange e-mails or websites that you are unexpectedly referred to that look like the real thing. Carefully guard and regularly change your PIN numbers and passwords. And if things become desperate and you are thinking of robbing a bank, don’t waste your time. When you pass over the counter the note saying ‘This is a robbery - hand over some money’ the chances are the teller will ask you to go online first.

Overcapitalisation - The Renovators Nightmare In the island of the Gods the never ending cycle of regeneration continues unabated. “I have just moved to Bali now what should I do? I know, I’ll raise sheep, nothing like a woolly jumper to keep you warm on a winter’s night…….. Maybe not.” “I could start a mini market, not a lot of competition there……. on second thoughts........” “I’ll open an International Health Clinic? I can charge a fortune removing wax from people’s ears and cleaning navels….. Oh? Really sick people go to Singapore do they?” “I know, I’ll open a restaurant, no one has thought of that before. Throw a few bits and pieces in a pan, fry them up, what could go wrong?” It never ceases to amaze me how many people come here and decide to open a restaurant or bar. They think it will be so easy. The fail to see that the whole island is littered with empty restaurants and bars and that the few that are successful are run by people who really know their trade, have worked hard and hung in there for years until, finally, they have found a formula that works. Like reinventing the square wheel they make the same mistakes time after time. Not being in touch with the local situation, they inevitably pay over the odds for the lease, they select a poor location and then, just to make sure that success will be just a pipe dream away, they spend a fortune renovating the place making it virtually impossible to pay back the debt. What they fail to see is that, as long as the place is clean and the kitchen and toilets are presentable, it is what you do in the place rather than the place itself that brings success. I have been watching a case in point, some time ago a very wealthy person new to Bali, built a restaurant from scratch on a well located site. They spent a fortune building a stunning, purpose-built building. It had a good location, great parking and a beautiful venue, how could it not work?
It failed miserably. Each day I drove past it wanting to shout out “change your menu, get yourself a new cook, get rid of that obnoxious waiter”. After several very sad, empty years it closed. Time passed (it does you know). Then, one day, activity started, a new owner, a fresh start. As is always the case the tukangs moved in with their wrecking hammers. The beautiful tiled floors were torn up and replaced with a rather fetching shade of - grey. Time will tell if their efforts and expenditure will be rewarded. Renovation is something most of us get involved in from time to time (my wife works on it every morning) but renovation does need some careful thought. First, we need to ask “do we really need to renovate or would a simple paint job do?“ If yes we then need to consider why we want to renovate. You might answer: • We need to improve our office or restaurant to a standard that reflects our business in order to impress our target customers. • We want to sell or lease out our property and we want to get a higher price. • I am returning the house to the landlord and my dog has torn the doors to pieces. • The roof is leaking, I have rising damp and my feet are wet. • We have taken over a welding shop and wish to turn it into a luxury spa. • Our business is expanding and now we can’t swing the cat. • When I am banished to the dog kennel there isn’t enough room for both me and the dog. Overcapitalisation if probably the single major mistake that many people make when renovating, they pay out large sums of money that the renovation will never be able to pay back.

We need to be brutally honest about value and return on investment and by value we are not just talking about money, we might be talking about the improvement of the company reputation, the effect on staff morale, the quality of the clientele we attract or the efficiency of our operations, the list goes on. Somehow we need to work out the financial benefit we will gain. How much will it increase the selling price of the property, will it really attract new customers, would it be cheaper to find new premises better suited to a new business model? Can the renovation cost be justified with such a short period left on the lease? Finally, we need to carefully look at the estimated costs and trim them to what is appropriate for the value of the gains we expect to make. Do we really need to retile the floor or do we buy a rug? If we don’t knock that wall out we won’t need the high cost of strengthening the building structure. Do we renovate the dog kennel or just get rid of the dog? Often a little bit of careful thought can save a lot of money. After the silence and serenity of Nyepi, the rest of the month of March is stepping up the pace with more Balinese celebrations, charity events, workshops and Ubud-style festivals. Hari Tumpek Kandang – Saturday 16 March The Tumpek days are a special way for the Balinese to give thanks and blessings for different objects they use in their daily lives. Tumpek Kandang is dedicated to animals, livestock and pets. Offerings are made for successful farming and animal welfare and to pray for the harmony of the environment which contributes to human sustenance and happiness. On this day you will see some domestic animals adorned with tokens of love and appreciation, like cows and horses with conical hats made from coconut leaves and pigs with colourful fabrics around their necks and bellies. This is the day the animals are given the best food and care to give thanks for the work done by these animals or as the providers of food resources. Solemen Balinese Full Moon Night Ceremony – 19 March The Pyramids of Chi in Ubud is the venue for a charity event organised by the popular Solemen Foundation working tirelessly to improve the health and living conditions of the diffabled and disadvantaged people in Bali. It promises to be an enchanted evening with a Shamanic Fire Ceremony and a 1-hour Ancient Sound Healing in the sacred space of the Pyramid of the Sun while listening to the ethereal sounds of gongs, drums, didgeridoos and Tibetan bowls in this deeply meditative experience. Afterwards the Pyramids Café will serve up a tasty 3-course buffet meal while inspiring speakers and storytellers take to the stage. Local musicians Love Mafia, Rizal & The Rasendriya, Kai Mata and Cellomano, each with their own brand of jams, will get the crowd moving to a fitting crescendo.

They believe this is the day that god comes down on earth in order to bless its inhabitants. Known as ‘Purnama Kedasa’ the day coincides with many major temple festive rituals, attended by thousands of devotees. The famous mother temple, Besakih, holds a special ceremony known as ‘Betara Turun Kabeh’, inviting the gods and deified ancestors for their blessings. Bali Spirit Festival – 24 to 31 March
The Bali Spirit festival needs no introduction. This annual event, celebrating all things yoga, sacred healing, song and dance, is happening for the 12th time. It’s all about joy and the mind-body-spirit connection. Some 150 presenters, yoga instructors, shamans, spirit gurus and practitioners will be convening from Bali and around the world. The festival will feature yoga, dance and sound sessions, workshops, meditation, concerts and performances held in various yoga centres in Ubud and around Bali. 1 to 7 day passes are available. For more information contact www.balispiritfestival.com Celebrating Women: Afternoon Tea, Talks and Trends – 20 March
