Count Down to Football Finals Fever @Finns Recreation Club plenty of ‘on field’ entertainment for the whole family. Let the kids spend the afternoon on the free jumping castles then put your fancy footwork skills to the test for the chance to win Rp10,000,000 in Finns ‘Kick the Ball Comp’. If the scoreboard after the final siren doesn’t leave you with a grin, try your luck another way and pick the margin win! Coverage of Saturday, September 30th’s AFL Grand Final action begins from 8am with kick off for the main event from midday (Bali time). NRL football final viewing the following afternoon If you’re a footy fanatic….and judging by the butts on barstools in Bali sports bars each weekend there are many… you’ll be getting a tad excited as we near the latter part of football season. Finals are approaching and it’s getting to the pointy end of the competition with that silver chalice in the line of sight for several teams on the sporting ladder. A time of year when anguished cries over lost tries can be heard emanating from clubs and bars across the island, when slightly-too-tight jerseys bearing team colours and insignias make their annual appearance, and when the weekend of September 30th to October 1st is reserved for nothing else but FOOTBALL!!! It appears the team at Finns are just as fanatical about footy as you are because this year they’ve upped the ante for Grand
Final weekend entertainment. No chance of missing even a minute of the game with two big screens, including one huge LED screen on the footy field, as well as thirty plasma screens positioned inside the Sports Bar and outside around Bistro C. Choose A/C and indoors in the Sports Bar or the festhaus ambience of Finns’ Footy Beer Hall for Saturday’s AFL Grand Final - a shaded marquee in the middle of the Rec Club lawns, decked out with draft beer on tap and great deals on icy cold buckets of bottled beer. It would barely be a Grand Final without footy food and Finns will have the BBQ stoked up and ready to go along with the entire meaty menu from Smoke House available to accompany your beverages. I’m thinking beers and a beef brisket here meat lovers…..nom, nom, nom! Grand Final weekend is an all ages event and Finns is providing

Supported by the 6,290 Euros raised for the “One with the Beloved”, Music for Peace Campaign, Bali-based sound healer Shervin Boloorian is currently sharing music from the campaign’s newly finished international album, One with the Beloved, on a huge European tour. The 2017 Euro tour began at magical Mundekulla Festival in Sweden, where Shervin Hey check out the huge community section on Balispirit.com’s re-vamped blended live music with Rumi texts at the One website. There’s so much information now, including events, NGOs, with the Beloved concert and followed with two Balinese ceremonies and blogs covering travel inspiration, conscious sound journey programs through the course of shopping and health and wellness. the weekend. The website – and Bali – have come a long way since life and business partners, Meg Pappenheim and Pak Made Gunarta, first came up with the idea to revitalize Bali’s global image, in that awful period after the devastation wrought on the island’s heart and economy by the Bali bomb. The BaliSpirit team has clearly had a big think and done a lot of consultation about this change, so visitors can just search by type, location, price and dates to find exactly what they are looking for across the island. The vision for BaliSpirit.com remains the same to create an online community to support local businesses and to unite diverse cultures that share a mutual love for Bali, culture, health and spirituality.

Help! My Frangipani Has Scale Insects! ‘Hi Doc, Rico here! Can you help with my frangipani? I’d like some advice regarding black leaves and white fluffy spots under the leaves. Before I go and administer a systemic pesticide to my lovely trees, I’d like a second opinion - are you willing to help, or even visit and consult? Thanks - Rico’ There are a few things going on here, hold off on the pesticide for now and read on….. This description is characteristic of a severe mealybug infestation, a type of scale insect from the family Pseudococcidae. They are oval shaped and covered in a mealy or floury looking wax, hence their common name. They are usually around 5mm in length (the size of a small fly) with a white powdery or fluffy appearance. They feed by sucking the sap from leaves, buds and stems, causing wilting, and distortion of new leaves. In heavy infestations they will conglomerate, and resemble cotton wool like masses and for this reason a colony is often mistaken for fungal growth. The blackened leaves indicate a fungus known as sooty mould, which is secondary to the infestation of the bugs, and resembles a layer of soot on the leaves as the name suggests. The sooty mould thrives on the sugary honeydew excreted by piercing sucking insects, such as mealybugs, aphids and other types of scale. The result is foliage and stems smothered in a sticky black goo, blocking light and impeding photosynthesis to the further detriment of the plant. Now this is where it gets even more interesting. Ants are also attracted to the honeydew, as a food source and once on the scene will farm mealybugs around the plant and then from plant to plant…what a bunch of cheeky little buggers! But still it gets worse from here, because the ants protect them from predators and parasites, this means that mealybug infestations tend to be much more serious in the presence of ants. it gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘ant-farm’. And to think that humans would like to take credit as the only species to conduct agriculture on a large scale, pardon the pun.
the bugs around to produce even more, which then leads to sooty mould and the cycle repeats until you either kill the bugs or they kill the plant, whichever comes first. What started with the bugs has snowballed into a threefold problem, bugs, ants and sooty mould. It is a relentless coordinated attack. The solution is simple. For a badly infested plant much of the affected foliage should be cut away before attempting any chemical control, organic or otherwise. Prune off all severely affected foliage, to stimulate new growth. Foliage smothered in sooty mould is about as useful as a gangrenous limb. Cut it, bag it, and throw it out.
as simple as wiping them off with an old cloth. Remember, even mild pesticides such as our homemade pest oil should only be used as a method of last resort as it can also harm the beneficial insects responsible for pollination, and others that help keep pests under control such as spiders. Even so called ‘organic’ pesticides should be used sparingly, formulations that contain neem and pyrethrum are very poisonous until they biodegrade. You can use confidor or horticultural oil, the residue will last much longer and you’ll also be poisoning the bees, pollinators and yourself. What’s the point of gardening if you must spray potent poison all around the place. It turns a natural pastime into a dangerous one. Don’t forget your gas mask, and full protective body suit while you’re at it. You wouldn’t want to get it on your skin let alone inhale the vapours also. Even organic pesticides such as neem are extremely toxic to humans! An alternative method that works well in the earlier stages of infestation, is to blast the bugs off with a hose at high pressure, although this may not be an option depending on how advanced the infestation or how delicate the foliage is. To be effective this treatment should be repeated every few days until the mealy bugs are gone.
Concoct a home remedy, by mixing vegetable oil with dish washing soap. This is preferable to a highly toxic chemical spray and just as effective. Mix a cup of vegetable oil with a cup of dish soap. Dilute this mixture at a rate of 1 part to 20 parts of water, then apply to scale infestations. The dish soap is toxic to the scale and will break down their waxy protective shell and suffocate the critters in the process. The vegetable oil ensures the soapy water adheres to and smothers the scale, whereas soapy water alone will simply run-off and not be as effective. The soap must stick!
Try to avoid all commercial chemical sprays even for other pest problems, as they will also kill beneficial insects such as ladybirds and lacewings, which are known predators of scale. The mealybugs however often escape unscathed if not directly targeted because they reside underneath the leaves and are covered in a protective wax. Remember, even natural sprays should only be used sparingly and as a last resort, because they can also harm beneficial insects. Regular inspection of your plants is essential. If you ever see ants crawling up and down stems and across leaves you should realise that you have a problem. Ants are typically found on the ground, and will only inhabit plants if there is a honeydew source, which means either mealy bugs, aphids or other types of scale. If you spot a colony of ants wandering around on your plants alarm bells should be ringing! A quick check of the growing tips and the undersides of foliage will reveal the bugs.
It is also known that by stroking the back of some aphids (another type of scale) with their antennae, that ants can induce a honeydew droplet. A plant covered in ants is the canary in the coal mine, which will alert you to the fact that there is a scale insect problem, and may allow you to nip it in the bud early on before a more serious infestation takes hold.
What we have created here is essentially a home-made pest Now that you know all about mealy bugs, how to spot them oil with much lower toxicity to the environment and humans and how to stop them, you’ll be able to nail them as soon as but with just as much efficacy. It is also more economical than you come across them! buying chemicals, and you probably have the ingredients ready to use, right now sitting under your kitchen sink. Just mix it up and spray on with a garden applicator, alternatively using a wet sponge will also suffice. Make sure to wet the undersides of foliage and the stems, as scale tends to colonise most heavily on the underside of leaves and close to the trunk. Leave the solution overnight and then attack the weakened bugs with a strong jet of water or wipe them off with a cloth. Dr. Kris Alternatively let them drop as they die. Left unchecked a plant can be severely weakened, even destroyed in a surprisingly short space of time. In short, the bugs suck the sap, the ants harvest the by-product, farming

C’est la vie, as we might have said if we had reached French speaking territory as planned. Evidently Provence was not on Fate’s list of preferred destinations for The Diary and the Distaff. Was it something we did on a previous visit? Surely not, for we seem to remember being rather well behaved. But L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is near Avignon, once the seat of the popes while others also claiming that title were in possession of the Vatican in Rome. Maybe that’s it. We remember once, a long time ago now, having been rather critical in print about the crusade against the Cathars, who seem to have been among the early modernists, though they were well before their time. Their cruel reduction was one of the more outrageous of Medieval Christendom’s schismatic outrages. By the time this column appeared in print, we were in Scotland. Such are the imperatives of the Grand Tour as it is nowadays taken. It’s quicker – unless one of your airline’s flying machines has a technical problem, that is – though quite possibly it is far less fun than grand tours were when they were invented. In the good old days, you travelled by carriage and counted yourself lucky if your journey had not been interrupted by the untimely demise of your postilion due to his inattention in being struck by lightning. That is if you survived it yourself, having avoided death by dicky oysters or from whatever epidemic had won the gig as pestilence of choice that year. It’s much safer now, despite what the media and various government nursemaids try to tell you. We’re away until late in October, which in one crucial element is unfortunate, since we’ll miss an opportunity to unwind with a delightful friend whose own schedule brings her to Bali this month. But, hey, we’re all so interconnected these days. We even know pretty much everything that’s going on in Bali. Well, as much as your sources will drop at your feet and the desire of the authorities to avoid detection will let out for viewing, at least. The next Diary will come to you from Portugal, following a spell in the lovely Moorish shadows of Andalusia.

just for example, that the unique Bali dog and the village dogs are so central an element in traditional life that they deserve discussion within the context of Origins. Too often these days these dogs are seen instead as a street nuisance. The origins of mass tourism, a factor in this emerging disaffection, are of course neither historic in the wider sense nor spiritual in the least. That is unless you worship money, the capitalist deity.

Never mind. There’s plenty of material for discussion on the program this year, including some interesting workshops – the one on yoga for writers might bend a few minds; and Andreas Hartono on investigative journalism promises to introduce his audience to the key strengths and challenges of narrative reporting.

If You Have a Problem with.....
No Barking Aloud In Bali, you’re not supposed to bark at things you might think should be brought more fully into the public consciousness. Local crime, for example, while the subject of some concern among the citizenry – who wants to be mugged, after all, or find that their home has been broken into – just bubbles along otherwise largely unremarked except in the social media, unless the police have a triumph of detection or happenstance to put on parade. The epidemic of dog thefts, presumably for breeding trophy dogs and the disgusting dog meat trade, continues unabated.

Dogs feature in another of Bali’s preference for official silence: the matter of rabies. It’s not done to talk about where a rabid dog – poor creature – has been found, as they are, and especially not about human rabies cases, which continue at low endemic rates. Then there’s the anti-rabies vaccine issue. Bitten? Good luck if you can find post-exposure protection. In a rabies endemic area, and all of Bali falls into that category, no dog that you don’t know is fully vaccinated and has had the required boosters at the correct intervals, can safely be regarded as not potentially a risk. But the administrative zeal for implementing an effective island-wide anti-rabies program doesn’t exist, the bureaucracy is largely indifferent to any stimulus other than embarrassment if something leaks out, and the budget that would support a real effort doesn’t exist. That’s occasionally mentioned as a factor in the continued failure of Bali’s authorities to get on top of rabies. But it’s generally along the lines of its being a pity no one from somewhere else has fronted up with extra money.

But the Big Wingnut, or whichever entity it is who is charged with messing up people’s plans, intervened and we weren’t anywhere, except still in Bali. Our KLM aircraft experienced a “technical issue” after arriving from Amsterdam via Singapore on Sep. 1. That technical issue may have been resolved in a fairly timely way with a fly-in gizmo replacement (that’s good) but the resulting customer snafu certainly wasn’t. In our case, a planned four-night spot in Provence became, in order of later options, a three-night spot (still doable), then a two-night spot (just), and then a nil-night spot. Which was a dreadful outcome: all that cheese and wine that was not consumed (by us). Instead we had an unscheduled two nights in Amsterdam en route to Scotland, originally our second but now our first destination. Ah well, tak ada, one might say. And of course that’s probably all you should say, publicly. A Dutch friend told us on Facebook, “I can not believe it.” Our response: “We wish we could not.”

When this diary was written, we were supposed to be in Provence, France. Specifically, we were supposed to be in the lovely lower Rhone Valley, at L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. “We,” in this instance, means The Diary and the Distaff. That’s for any quibblers out there. We had one recently. He seemed to think its use in previous episodes was not so much a clumsy third-person generic construction as an indication that we had a pretentious royal fetish. If he knew us at all, which he doesn’t, he’d know that’s well off all the Marx.

And So … To the 2017 Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. We’ll be back for that. Wouldn’t miss it. Unless your preference runs to ear-splitting music, shamanistic shaking, or novel reorganisation of your chakras, it’s Ubud and Bali’s jewel in the festivals crown and a fixed date our diary every year. This year the principal media sponsor is The Guardian newspaper, in its web-based Australian guise, a virtual journal that is ably edited by Lenore Taylor, a fine scribbler of our long acquaintance. The resident festival guardian will be Steph Harmon, the paper’s culture editor, who tells us she is looking forward to some interesting discussion around the theme of the festival, Origins. It’s a fascinating theme, on a human scale. Bali is a very special place, with a religion and culture that incorporates non-human life forms in its narrative. It could well be argued,
Axel Munthe’s The Story of San Michele was our nomination. It is a narrative that magically defines the real scope of human endeavour. But in thinking about that, we considered (though because they are basically primers, passed them over) Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet and Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations. Meditations, written chiefly as private notes by M Aurelius when he was Roman Emperor, should be required reading for any politician or those with leadership ambitions. He was a Stoic – a Stoic’s Stoic in fact. He died of plague at Vindobonda (it’s now Vienna) in 180 CE.

Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua Our sincere thanks to the Bali Advertiser for continuing to provide opportunities to Rotary Clubs in Bali to present an overview of their activities, to a readership that may not be fully aware of the significant contribution Rotary strives to make to disadvantaged groups in our community. Increased community awareness helps encourage new members to join Rotary and to contribute to the very significant programs of community support that they provide. This translates into increased funding support for the programs, and increased service delivery reaching a wider group of beneficiaries. So thanks, Bali Advertiser, for your support! Rotary has a long history in Bali, with our own Rotary Club Bali Nusa Dua (RCBND) in its Silver Anniversary year, having been established 25 years ago in 1992, as the first English-language Rotary Club in Bali. There are now some 16 active clubs in Bali with more than 400 members, including 5 English- language clubs. Rotary clubs provide a diverse program of support for disadvantaged groups, generally following Rotary International’s preferred priorities for community support, but also responding to urgent local needs within the communities served by local Clubs. Rotary International was founded in 1905, and now has more than 35,000 clubs and 1.5 million members in some 200 countries. Rotary’s values of service, fellowship, diversity, integrity and leadership, and the motto of Service above Self, provide a unifying basis for the effective participation of its Clubs in addressing Rotary’s six current priority themes: Promotion of peace; Fight disease; Provide clean water, sanitation, hygiene; Save mothers and children; Support education; Grow local economies. Obviously, not all these themes are priorities for disadvantaged groups in Bali communities, but Rotary clubs round the Island continue to address a wide range of issues. In recent years the RCBND program has contributed more than US$60,000 per year in support of a number of major projects and long-running health and education programs, including: 1. Cleft lip and palate operations for children and young adults in Bali, NTB and NTT, in association with an
International and local foundation Kolewa, which acts as a service provider, helping to manage the program and its implementation by experienced surgeons in selected local hospitals. Since the program’s inception in 1994/95, around 1600 patients have benefited from support by RCBND, contributing international Rotary clubs, and Rotary International itself. The program is continuing, and over the next 2 years we expect to contribute more than $125,000 for the ongoing program. 2. Since 1993 RC Bali has been involved with the Yayasan Puspadi Bali (formerly Yayasan YAKUM) to first train and more currently assist people in need of prosthetic limbs and prostheses such as splints and leg braces to economically disadvantaged individuals in Bali. Our current focus is to assist physically handicapped children at YPAC Foundation (foundation for physically and mentally handicapped children) in neighbouring Jimbaran. 3. For several years, RCBND has worked at the forefront in the fight against a rising HIV/AIDS problem in Bali, with support directed to HIV affected mothers and children. Our broad program of support has included: the training of mid-wives on prevention measures for HIV transmission from mother to child; training of counsellors working in NGOs, clinics and hospitals; provision of breast milk substitute to babies born to HIV mothers; financial support for the extremely effective Clinic Amerta which provides free medical service to patients with HIV and other diseases; provision of scholarships for HIV positive children from challenged socio-economic backgrounds to ensure they have access to schooling. Support is channelled through NGO service providers, such as Kerti Praja, to maximise the long-term effectiveness of the program. 4. More recently RCBND is joining with Rotary Clubs in Bali and Australia in providing support to the Bali Children Foundation for their excellent program of scholarship support to the children of disadvantaged families in remote villages in Bali. Since its inception in 2005/6, BCF has provided scholarships for more than
Major programs are often delivered in the field by professional local and international service providers to maximise the impact and effectiveness of the funds provided. Club members are actively involved in program management and administration, but also in many smaller scale activities that bring immediate benefit, relief and smiles to deserving families in local communities. Examples include an Orphanage Christmas Party, an annual event held in partnership with the Grand Hyatt Bali for around 350 orphan and disabled children of all faiths. We have also equipped a facility used by the Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker, providing care for children undergoing cancer treatment at Sanglah Hospital, with activities, toys and study materials provided by RCBND. The Rotary Club Nusa Dua has been very effective for many years in reaching out to its local business and residential communities to raise the funds needed to support its program portfolio, and while this has required a lot of hard work, this has been more than compensated by the many opportunities for fellowship that arise during the annual program. Our signature event and major fund-raiser has been the Annual Rotary Golf Tournament held at Bali National Golf Club, of which there have already been 17 staged and widely attended by the extremely supportive golfing and Rotary communities and friends. But there are many lower-key events throughout the year, and the fellowship within and between Rotary clubs provides a large part of the “glue” that is essential in building a strong, cohesive and effective organisation. While we are an active Club, we have an important and continuing need for new members to help maintain these community support programs, to help build a better future for the many who remain disadvantaged and in need in Bali, and to add to the energy and diversity of our Rotary Club Nusa Dua. Our Club meets every Thursday 12:30 – 2:00pm at the Bali National Golf Club in ITDC, Nusa Dua. Our Members are from a variety of countries and backgrounds, and we welcome existing Rotarians, potential new members, and indeed anyone who would like to know more about Rotary and/or the Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua. Please direct enquiries to: esecretary@rotarybali.org.

18 LOOKING AFTER YOUR PET AFTER SURGERY Whether it’s your pet’s routine sterilisation surgery or a major orthopaedic surgery for a broken leg, postoperative care is extremely important. This is because a mild and barely noticeable infection can turn into a very serious infection in the space of just 48 hours, and in the case of orthopaedic surgery, a sudden impact or excessive exercise can cause the already weakened bone or ligament to break down again and require a repeat surgery. At Sunset Vet we have put together this simple list of basic instructions to maximise the chances of your pet not being one of the unfortunate ones that suffers post-operative complications.
walks on the lead and no running off the lead or playing with other dogs. Any pets that have had orthopaedic surgery will require longer term exercise restriction, which will be explained to you by a vet.

5. Keep the surgical wound clean and dry NC/Ns/G - 27 July 11
1. Monitoring the wound When you take your pet home be aware of the location of the surgical wound. Once home check the wound daily for 10 days and if there appears to be any bruising, swelling or discharge please call or email us, if emailing it helps to attach a photo of the wound so the vet can advise whether any intervention is needed or not. You may also WhatsApp photos to our reception hand phone number.
For 10 days do not let your pet outside if it is raining or has recently rained, as they might lay down in a puddle and cause a wound infection. Do not allow dogs to swim and do not take them to the beach as sand could get into the healing wound. If you have other pets, it can also be a problem if they show interest in the wound and lick at it – the effect is no different to the patient licking the wound itself and this can cause an infection. You may need to separate the pets until the wound has healed.
2. Removing any stitches
6. Feeding your pet
Usually the stitches will be placed subcutaneously and will dissolve themselves, without any need for removal. However in some cases external non-absorbable sutures will be used, which need to be removed after 10 days when the skin has fully healed. These patients will require a quick vet check up 10 days post surgery, during which the stitches will be removed if the wound has healed in a satisfactory manner.
It is normal for the appetite to be reduced after surgery. Food and water can be offered as normal unless there are specific instructions from the vet otherwise. For example pets that have had gastrointestinal surgery will usually have a particular feeding plan involving small portions of a highly digestible food.
3. Using a buster collar It is important that your pet does not lick at any wound or stitches, as this is likely to cause an infection. Contrary to some myths, a dog licking a wound does not ‘clean it naturally’ and there are no beneficial ingredients in a dog/cat’s saliva. Quite the opposite as a dog/cat’s mouth is full of bacteria. Pets that are hyperactive or are obsessive groomers will often lick at their surgical wounds, and these pets require a plastic buster (Elizabethan) collar which should be worn until the surgical wound has fully healed (7-10 days post surgery). Buster Collars need to stay on 24/7, as just 10 minutes of licking/chewing can cause a wound to break down and require another operation to re-suture it. If in doubt, buy an appropriately sized buster collar at Sunset Vet so that you have it handy should you notice your pet licking or showing interest in his/her surgical wound. Then, keep a close eye on your pet at home and if you notice any licking or nibbling at the wound, apply the buster collar immediately. If you don’t end up using it it’s not a waste as you can keep it and reuse it another time – it’s likely your pet will need it at some point in its life.

7. Medication If your pet has had surgery he/she may be prescribed medication to take home such as antibiotics or painkillers. The vet will explain the dosing during the discharge appointment or by phone. It is important you follow the instructions on the label and complete the course of medication even if your pet seems to be fully recovered already. Likewise, the duration of any medication prescribed is based on an estimate by the vet on the minimum length of treatment required. In some cases the medication needs to be extended for longer than expected, due to minor complications, or the fact that your pet is a slow healer for whatever reason. 8. Clipped hair Your pet’s hair will have been clipped around the surgical site and also on the leg where an IV catheter was placed. The hair will grow back within 4-6 weeks but sometimes there is a red rash where the hair was clipped (‘clipper rash’), if a dog has very sensitive skin. This will fade quickly but if it is bothering your pet we can prescribe some extra medication to make your pet more comfortable. If you have concerns about possible complications after surgery or if you would just like to chat to a vet for reassurance or a quick question, please do not hesitate to call your vet to discuss it. It is much better to solve any postoperative problems early, rather than wait for your check up appointment.
4. Allow your pet to rest
Sunset Vet offers veterinary services via their Kuta (24hr) and Ubud (8am-10pm) clinics. For further information or to make an appointment call them on 03619348915 (Kuta) or 0361975296 (Ubud), or visit www.sunsetvetbali.com or www.facebook.com/sunsetvetbali or Instagram: sunset_vet_bali
Some anaesthetic drugs take 24-48hrs to wear off so please allow your pet peace and quiet at home. For the first 48hrs after surgery cats should be kept indoors and dogs should not be taken for any walks at all, only brought to an outside area on a lead to pee/poop, then back inside for further rest. Then for the following week, dogs should have 5 minute

SOCIAL IMPAKT : A journey through Indonesia’s remote areas with a mission in mind, improving access to clean water. • Crowdfunding Campaign For Clean Drinking Water in Rural Bali But with only one idea in mind, how could I help to make this world a better place ?
Water is life and access to clean water is a human right! It is estimated that in Indonesia 34 million people out of 260 million people - that is 13% of the total- do not have access to clean drinking water. That is why the company Social Impakt created by Jeroen is preparing a crowdfunding campaign that will be launched on September 5th for 30 days and which aims to raise 60,000 euros to finance the purchase of 2,000 water filters for 3 villages and 25 schools in the area of Sidemen in East Bali. Back in 2011, I was Vice President for Europe, Middle East, and Africa for a British corporation, based in Dublin, led a business of 260 million USD with 7 factories and 800 employees, traveling always more. Suddenly I experienced a shift in me. I realized that I was helping companies making money, but I was not helping people. I realized there was a better way to use my business skills. I quit my job and I landed in Indonesia for some holidays, without exactly knowing what would be the next step.
I came across the alarming figures of children deaths caused by drinking unsafe water. In Indonesia alone, 20,000 children below 5 years old die every year from waterborne diseases. Diarrhea is the second cause of infant mortality in the world. My adventure started at this moment, I decided to focus on water. In 2014, inspired by this trip, I decided to create Social Impakt, a social business whose mission is to improve access to clean water in remote communities in Indonesia by supplying an affordable and eco-friendly water filtration technology.
water filter. To date, we have already positively impacted the lives of more than 16,000 people. We have also set up a network of 30 filter resellers in the villages, creating new income opportunities. Our crowdfunding campaign, if successful, will improve access to clean water in east Bali and that means improved health, improved income, reduced CO2 emissions and reduced plastic bottle use in these communities. It will positively impact 15,000 people. Do not hesitate to donate and share it to the world, it is for a good cause.
I met Mangku, to whom I owe a lot of my success today. He is my brother, my translator, my gateway to this new world. Over an 18 months period, Mangku and I were traveling all over east Bali with our car filled with water filters. We met more than 150 village leaders and visited more than 500 schools to introduce our

The world’s bee population is disappearing but there is still hope. By taking part in this bee-keeping workshop this will give you an insight as to what can be done to protect bees and ensure pollination. The workshop includes theoretical sessions and hands-on field trips. You will learn about the native bee biodiversity of Bali and construct a bee box. Mexican Independence Day Party (15 September) A little bit of Mexican trivia is needed for the background to this party. In 1810, Mexico began its quest for independence with a ‘cry for independence’ and on 16th September started a revolt against the Spanish finally leading to independence. Independence Day is celebrated with fireworks, fiestas, food, dance and music with everything decorated in the colours of the Mexican flag across Mexico. Motel Mexicola is definitely worth a visit on this day of celebration. The Hydrant, one of Bali’s top bands and one and only Rockabilly band are part of the entertainment along with DJs and El Grito. Best dressed will win a prize. It goes without saying dress code Mexican. I won’t even mention the scrumptious Mexican food along with margaritas that you simply cannot beat down at Motel Mexicola. Do call to make a reservation as this is a popular place and worth a visit at any time as well as on this auspicious occasion.

Sunday Brunch (24 September) Brunches have become increasingly popular particularly in hotels, a combination of breakfast and lunch served from 11 am, originating in England in the late 19th century and becoming popular in the USA in the 1930s. Brunch is definitely for those who are late rises, too late for breakfast and yet in time for lunch but want the thrills of a good breakfast. Prego are hosting a lively Sunday Brunch in celebration of Italy’s Vendemmia Festival with superb food and entertainment catering to all the family. The annual Vendemmia Festival is a time-honored Italian tradition to mark the end of the grape-harvesting season. It is a community event that brings people together to share homemade dishes and artisan wine. This exclusive Sunday Brunch at Prego promises to be a fun day out with an extensive buffet featuring an antipasti bar and live carving station. Notable highlights will include traditional grape stomping by Sababay Winery and an interactive bird show by Bali Bird Park with lots of photo opportunities. In addition, the Westin family kids club will be hosting supervised games and activities for children in their beautiful tropical garden setting. Lucky draws with fabulous prizes, Prego’s dance routine and gimmicks with a guest appearance by Pippo the squirrel are all part of the day’s highlights. The price includes a welcome glass of Prosecco, soft drinks and signature high tea. If you haven’t attended a brunch at a hotel in Bali I certainly recommend this one. I love prawns and when I find them really fresh I snap them up. This highly spiced dish is excellent over basmati rice and a bowl of soupy dahl to go along side. You could easily use the sauce with veggies, tofu or tempe if you’re a vegetarian.

Make 2 Serving Ingredients: - 1/2 cup plain yogurt - 1 Tbl. garam masala – an Indian spice mixture - 2 clove garlic, pressed - 2 tsp. fresh ginger, grated - 1/2 - 1 tsp. ground cayenne - 1 tsp. grated fresh turmeric - salt to taste - 16 prawns, peeled and deveined - 1 tablespoon butter Directions: In a medium sized bowl, combine the yogurt, garam masala, garlic, ginger, cayenne, turmeric, and salt. Use a fork to mix this into a smooth marinade. Add the cleaned prawns and gently toss with the marinade. Let the flavors marry in the fridge for at least 4 hours. About ten minutes before you are ready to eat, heat a large skillet and melt the butter in it. Add the marinated prawns and the marinade. Cook the prawns for about 4 minutes per side. When both sides are done, transfer the prawns to a serving plate, pouring every last bit of sauce over them. Serve with your favorite rice.

The Flaming Teppan! The chef arrives at the stainless steel hot plate and greets you in Japanese, it is cooking time. He pours a clear liquid across the teppan and a flame bursts into the air, it is show time. There are many Japanese restaurants in Bali that have one dedicated Teppanyaki area. Shima is, as far as I am aware, the only specialty Teppanyaki restaurant. They have one large double teppan where two chefs work and two smaller ones that can be booked for a private dinner catering for small parties of 6-11 diners. The Teppanyaki menu is quite extensive from which you can order your own selection of dishes. If it is your first visit then it is a good idea to take advantage of one of the set menus. Whilst the classic Miso Soup is a traditional starter for many Japanese meals Shima also has other soups available. Miso is the result of fermenting soy beans with salt and koji. It provides a protein fix for many Japanese every day and although it has a salty taste it is considered quite healthy unlike the use of table salt. The House Salad is often ordered at the same time and is the only dish that is prepared in the kitchen rather than at the teppan. It is a standard salad with lettuce, white radish, beet and carrot, you choose from three different dressings. Tofu is a much maligned product, often considered to be tasteless. At Shima, cooked on the teppan with soy oil, it is quite a revelation. A bowl of mixed vegetables cooked, sliced and chopped on the teppan and flavoured with soy and a touch of ginger is another recommended course. The menu calls it by its Italian name, Calamari, but the Japanese call it ika. It is the perfect way to begin the seafood section of your Teppanyaki. This for me was probably the shock of the evening dining experience. So often when squid is ordered in Bali the result is similar to chewing leather, or worse still plastic. At Shima they use the tentacles and from large squid not the baby variety, it was so tender and tasty I was amazed.
QUICK REVIEW Maguro is tuna and naturally it is what is referred to as sashimi-grade. Order the way you want it cooked but anything above ‘just seared’ is a travesty with tuna of this quality! As with most of the seafood dishes here it is just cooked with a dab of soft garlic butter and soy. Perfect is the only way to describe the result, much the same as with the dish that followed, Barramundi. King Prawns are first flamed with vodka, then covered for a few minutes to enhance the flavour. Imported Scallops and local lobster are prepared the same way. Whilst beef is the most common meat used with Teppanyaki at Shima they also offer Chicken or a Lamb Chop [given a western touch with accompanying mint and rosemary sauce served on the side]. Beef can be Rib-eye or Tenderloin from the Black Angus or Wagyu Tenderloin [level 5 which limits the amount of fat]. Once again just cooked medium rare is the way to go if you really appreciate your beef. As with many Asian cuisines Fried Rice is served as a separate course at the completion of the seafood and meat dishes. Fried Rice prepared on the teppan is very different to that from a wok, it is totally grease-free. Dessert is ice cream. Black sesame or a Green tea which produces a chorus of appreciative sighs from everyone.

There are 4 set menus for the Teppanyaki, ranging from a 9 course special to the ultimate of 11 courses. Unlike most Asian cuisines each course in a Teppanyaki meal is served separately, one at a time, so each can be enjoyed at its best. Just inside the restaurant entrance, opposite the small Japanese garden, is the dedicated area for Shabu-Shabu. The Shabu-Shabu is served at normal tables [pictured]. You cook your own selection of ingredients in the broth of your choice [Miso, Kombu, Kimuchie or Sukiyaki]. The meat can be Sirloin or Wagyu, Seafood Scallops, Crab Cake, Squid, Prawn or Baby Octopus and Vegetables Enoki or Shiitake Mushrooms, Nappa Cabbage, Kale and Pokchoy. Add Tofu and Udon Noodles if you wish. The chefs are Shima all have extensive Japanese experience, in fact entering Shima you will think that you are actually in Japan. The fit-out as with the food is completely traditional. Dining at Shima is an experience. Not just the food, which is excellent, but the theatre of the evening is unique. M a y a U b u d offers a breakfast buffet every day, from b 7.00 a.m. Most 5 star hotels do 7 but there are few in the Ubud b area and there are fewer still a tthat welcome outsiders to the breakfast as Maya does [[children under 12 are half price]. It has become quite p popular with many local expats p rregularly bring their house guests to the buffet, seemingly g more so on Sundays. This buffet is very extensive with a full range of hot food; beef or chicken sausages, crisp bacon, pan-fried potato, quiche slices and even French toast. The starting point for most is the Egg Station, and here the chef will prepare your eggs any which way, it is almost show time. He is also constantly preparing what they call Martabak [just a mix of finely chopped vegetables wrapped in a wonton sheet] on a small side hot plate, folded into triangles. They are very tasty, so hard not to go back for extras. The Bread Table is quite impressive. The breads include full grain, wholemeal, black and a range of Danish, not just that awful supermarket white often presented at other places. Also on offer is an excellent cheese and salumi table [pictured], a rare find. In the adjoining room is an Asian Table with Chicken [lemon basil and chilli]. Vegetables [coconut milk curry] and rice; steamed or fried. Tired of cooking at home, then treat your chef and yourself to a luxury buffet, and pretend that you are on holidays!

Som Chai is opening on the site, Jln, Kerobokan, that once was REPLUBLIK 1945. It is an enormous space and will be 4th outlet for the Sarong Group within a few kilometers. All of their restaurants offer different Asian cuisines but all are with that unique style of master chef Will Meyrick. This time it is all Thai with fine dining in the rear cavernous room and Will’s version of Thai street food in the funky front section, which will, hopefully, become a party room late at night.
Balifornia is a restaurant at warung prices. It is found on the road through the Gianyar wood-carving village of Tenkulak [of dolphin fame]. A modern spacious area in a rural setting makes it a pleasant spot. It has already become popular with the local Balinese and now expats are also finding there way there too. The menu is what you would expect, a selection of popular dishes from a few different cuisines. Local is their Udang Asam Manis, the IndoChinese Ayam Koloke [sweet and sour chicken], a Japanese style Chicken Teriyaki, standard Italian Pizzas plus a few creations; Red Hot Chilli Pepper [chicken meat and sausage, mushroom, basil, paprika and peppers] and even a Chocolate Pizza with Nutella, banana and caramel. They have burgers and sandwiches, of course, and all at very cheap prices, served by young local smiling faces.

Nusantara is on Jln. Dewi Sita in Ubud. Part of the Locavore group it is attempting to do what many others have been unable to do successfully, presenting Indonesian cuisine in a ‘fine dining’ style and environment. The restaurant is on the site of the previous Cafe Havana, in fact it has been 5 different restaurants ever since it was once Apakabar 20 years ago, which was also Indonesian but a very basic one, quite a contrast to Nusantara. It has had a very extensive fit out by a successful group so there can be no doubts about its staying power. The menu attempts to present dishes from many parts of Indonesia. They are tailored to a different presentation style, and of course cost.
L’Alsace a Table has doubled the size of their popular deli and wine shop on Jln. Raya Petitenget, Kerobokan [next door to Shima restaurant]. Included now is a full butchery and a much enlarged wine store, with some very good wine at very reasonable prices.
AriBar is modern Mexican and is found on Jln. Kartika in South Kuta. The dishes are quite different to the many Tex and Cal Mex restaurants in Bali. Start with Jalapeno Poppers [large peppers filled with onion, cheese and tomatillos sauce]. Pork Cheek Flutas [braised pork cheek with pickled jalapeno, pineapple and cheese in a tortilla wrap with red enchiladas sauce] or Corn Cakes topped with guacamole, pico de gallo and pork belly. The Tacos are creations; Teriyaki Chicken, Honey Lime Salmon, etc. Mains are just as different; Carnitas Tortas [pork sautéed with pineapple, chipotle sauce, served with a fried egg on crusty bread with refried beans] and Chilli Cilantro Lime Chicken Rice are just two. They even offer a Burger – crisp fried chicken patty with pickled pineapple, lettuce and cheese. 10 out of 10 for doing something different rather than just sama-sama! Not only that, it works! Café Greco is new in Lovina. Yet another Greek restaurant by that man Marinos. He does not seem to understand the word ‘retirement’! Small and friendly, it is situated on the main road that runs through Lovina, right at the only set of traffic lights. Greek cuisine is mainly grilled meats and sticky sweets and that is what you get here. It opens early [7.30] for breakfast something that is not usual in sleepy Lovina. Fresh juices, sandwiches and burgers are extra to the standard Greek menu.
Pyramid has just opened, also in Lovina, next door to Cafe Greco and under the same management. It attempts to bring the night clubs of Seminyak, to Lovina with DJ’s, Drag Shows and all. They serve a range of snacks [Greek tapas] from the restaurant next door, and are open till late.

Magic & Witchcraft: Part I by Bill Dalton Bali’s very name conjures up an aura of magic. Beyond the island’s glitzy tourist resorts and growl of traffic-choked roads, the dark powers underlie much of Balinese culture. This secret Bali is hidden in villages deep in the countryside and down the labyrinth of back alleys in the island’s crowded towns and cities. Th Balinese are scared witless of ghosts, The go goblins and the like, which disguise th themselves as black cats, naked women, cr crows or disembodied humans. The sp specter of spirits - buta, kala and leyak pe permeate every corner of the island and oc occupy the thoughts and acts of its in inhabitants. These beliefs have continued un unabated, as firmly held today as they h b f a millennium. ill i have been for Near Pejeng, clay stupas impressed with tantric mantras, date from the 8th century. A thousand years later the theme of magical Bali is seen in the success of Odyle Knight’s Bali Moon: A Spiritual Odyssey (1998) and Elizabeth Gilbert’s book and film Eat, Pray, Love where magic, love and innerr e spiritual enlightenment are s for self-discovery. inseparable and involve quests Featured in both books traditional shamans plunge both heroines into the dark realm of intrigue and magic. Because it would be met with incomprehension and skepticism, magic and witchcraft are not subjects that Balinese wish to talk about with strangers, particularly foreigners. They keep such thoughts to themselves, reluctant to even to share them with fellow villagers who may be a practitioner of black magic, consequently opening themselves up to possible attack by witches (leyak). Ever wonder why motorcyclists randomly honk when passing a temple, crossroads or bridge when there’s no one else around? They are simply paying their respects to resident spirits, sort of like saying “Excuse me please.” Large banyan trees or trees of unusual shape or even unusual rocks are accorded special care because of their spiritual power. If the fingers of both hands can touch while embracing a tree, it’s probably the dwelling place of a spirit. The Bali Hindu religion is in fact only a veneer over complex, deeper-lying, indigenous superstitions. Equally as important as S Saraswati, the Hindu go goddess of learning, and Vi Vishnu associated with the cr creation of life, is Shiva’s consort Durga, the G Goddess of Death, and ru ruler of demons, ghosts an witches. and Fo hundreds of years, For cl classic Balinese literature th has been meticulously that in inscribed in lontar books – the dried fan-like strips of leaves of a species of palm tree, shaped like rulers - record sacred texts and illustrations of demonic creatures. These masterpieces of illustrative art and calligraphy provide a view of the Balinese ancient belief in the underworld. Sorcery and the existence of the paranormal infuse Balinese architecture, wood and stone carving, sculptural and pictorial art. Hilts of kris, the storied Balinese short dagger, are often shaped like a demon set with precious stones. Sacred wooden masks portray the features of a fiendish spirit, distorted to heighten the fearsomeness of its character. Whorls of beasts and other mythological characters impaling demon-witches are carved out of thick tree trunks. Brutish, fanged, bulging-eyed underworld figures guard gates and shrines and glare out from walls of temples, drum towers, hotels, courthouses and pedestals of traffic signs. Repulsive, mesmerizing creatures and sharped toothed ogres, fierce lolling-tongued witches, dragon-headed spirits, tortured souls with trailing intestines, giant roosters with umbrellas and animal-headed babies populate Balinese paintings. Bali’s Seen and Unseen Worlds Balinese learn to walk with one foot in the physical reality and one foot in the non-physical. Believing firmly in the concept of Sekala and Niskala, the Seen and Unseen worlds, the Balinese always try to stay on the good side of all the forces, both the good, positive and constructive and the evil, negative and destructive. A balance must be maintained between these two powerful forces that co-exist simultaneously in a dynamic and delicate equilibrium.
The seen world is what you can smell, hear and touch, but in the unseen niskala world dwell such beings as the tonya or Orang Sungai (the River People), memedi (hairy red humanoids), tuyul (naughty child spirts), moro (mythical animals), leyak (humans who take the form of animals and practice black magic), lulut mas (seething piles of yellow worms) and forest spirits and ghosts that inhabit an invisible dimension. Even diminutive entities like fireflies are sometimes imbued with transformative magic. People talk of aunts trapped by love-magic and countless illnesses inflicted upon families and acquaintances by black magic. When a child dies prematurely, little change is discerned in the outside tangible world but the unseen world of the spirits reveals itself, instilling fear in grieving families. One hears of lingering, mysterious illnesses from unidentified p poisons or of a husband who meets an untimely death at the h hands of a jealous mistress. When a coconut falls unexpectedly ffrom a nearby tree and almost hits a relative, it may not be cconsidered a natural occurrence. These incidents are often a attributed to malicious spirits, who have no other purpose than to ccause misery and havoc among humans. A Balinese can tell w when a domestic animal is possessed - a cow that darts away, sstartled; a chicken that pecks in a peculiar manner; a dog that w whines and reels about suddenly. Most Balinese are able to point tto several people in the village who practice black magic, but would never name them for fear of incurring their wrath. Motives for misfortunes caused by attacking leyak may be envy, revenge for some real or imagined insult or a desire for rice land or an inheritance. Babies and sick, weak, crippled or injured people are particularly vulnerable. They enter people’s bodies, making them ill, insane or imbecilic. Like vampires, these spirits relish sucking blood from sleeping victims and have been known to abduct children for a tasty snack. Since spirits dominate everything the Balinese do, the Balinese carry out a great number of daily activities and precautions that protect themselves against unseen forces and to prevent themselves from being haunted and stalked by lurking beings which they consider very real. Fruits, flowers and incense are constantly offered to appease angry deities. If put in our society, a Balinese would show all the classic symptoms of paranoia and neurotic disorders, but on Bali these traits are ritualized and institutionalized. Tuyul, Buta, Kala, Leyak The personification of negative forces on earth are buta and kala. When dogs begin to whine on moonless nights, the Balinese know these malevolent spirts are about. When these bloodthirsty creatures are not appeased with offerings, they can run rampant through villages, causing drought, famine and epidemics. When a person unexpectedly becomes rich, it’s believed that ghostly creatures called tuyul which have the appearance of tiny baldheaded babies, will serve their master by stealing money from other people’s houses. Their services are offered free of charge if the recipient allows his wife to breastfeed the creepy tuyul (though sometimes they instead suck her blood).
a fireball, a pig with human eyes or a monkey with golden teeth and an abnormally long tail. These evil beings may also manifest themselves in the form of a great rat, a baldheaded giant, a bird as large as a horse, a ball of fire, a rider-less motorcycle. According to old Balinese folklore, leyak have long fire-dripping tongues framed by large fangs that hang out far from their mouths. During the pitch black hours after midnight, graveyards are favorite dwelling places of leyak. They which also haunt such desolate places as dark back roads, deep forests, ravines, seashores and crossroads. In daylight they look like ordinary humans, but at night their heads rip loose from their bodies and start flying around with their entrails dangling from their heads in search of a newborn child or pregnant woman to suck the blood of unborn babies. Leyak can enter an injured accident victim through blood spilled on the road after an accident. Magic in Film The words Bali and magic are synonymous in early films about Bali. After organized tours started in the 1920s, the preoccupation of associating Bali with magic dominated the West’s perception of the island. The earliest moving pictures made by Dutch, German and American film makers emphasized the weird, supernatural, hidden forces, the most exotic and visually extreme aspects of Balinese culture. The clichés of entranced self-stabbing dancers, blood sacrifices like cockfighting, horrible screaming witches and sexual and magical powers became just as entrenched as the superficial image of Bali as a tropical paradise. In 1926, a film by a Dutch film maker about sacred trance dances, entitled simply Sang Hyang, pictured angelic little girls swaying under the spell of spirits in an incense-filled courtyard surrounded by seated men with arms akimbo. The first fiction film set on Bali opened in 1927 in an Italian-owned movie theater in Denpasar to thunderous reception by Balinese audiences. Called Calon Arang, the film was about the terrifying Queen of the Witches Rangda who threatens to bring disease and destruction to the kingdom. Goona Goona (also called The Kris), directed by Andre Roosevelt, was named after the Javanese and Malay word for love spells and potions. First released in America in 1930, this film further popularized the theme of sex appeal and magic in the world’s perception of the island, the modern equivalent of the 19th century romantic ideal of a primitive utopia with its innocent and dusky barebreasted maidens. In 1933, Island of the Demons (Insel der Damonen) was produced by Baron von Plessen, a German aristocrat who documented “primitive” societies. This classic film off Rangda disrupting the love life of two peasants further popularized the dark side of Bali lurking under the harmony – black magic and evil forces ready to run amok – a portrayal of witchcraft and exorcisms that stood out in contrast to the typical Hollywood film stereotypes. To d a y m a g i c persists as a theme in the marketing of Bali. There are Hindu secret societies, online Bali magic shops (Toko Alat Sulap Bali), a line of jewelry called “Bali Magic,” “Bali Magic Yoga” classes and retreats, “Magic I-Ching Coins” (kepeng) and “Magic Mushrooms” are still surreptitiously sold in Kuta. The sheer glut of goods emphasizing this theme is overwhelming.
Particularly dangerous and unpredictable are leyak, humans who practice black magic. The Balinese believe a witch must endure 1,000 years as an earthworm and 200,000 years as a poisonous mushroom before rebirth as a human. True demons, like Rangda and Barong, are predictable and belong to the natural order of the cosmos, but not so the dreaded leyak. These apparitions can fly through the air, poison food, enter the body of a victim, cause ambiguous bleeding and even crop failures. Leyak are able to shift into many forms. Depending on their knowledge and skill at mastering black magic, they can turn into
Note: Part II will cover antidotes to black magic and witchcraft: death and demon temples; exorcisms and trance dances; priests and shaman (pedanda, pemangku, balian); herbal medicines.

29 Bryan Stewart: Startup Consultant Bryan Stewart was born in Vermont. From 1996 to 2000 he attended Grinnell, a small liberal arts college in Iowa. Bryan graduated from Tufts University in Boston in 2007 with a degree in international business and finance. His first job out of college was as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bulgaria. Before starting his career as a venture capital and private equity advisor, he did some business consulting and worked with NGOs in international development. Bryan is the co-founder of the co-working space Outpost in Ubud. His clients include the initial investors of Gojek, one of Indonesia’s best known business success stories. How do you recognize an inspired start up? The founder. Businesses take on the personalities of the founder. You need to see passion there. Without it, the business doesn’t have a chance. Investors also look for competence in CEOs. The CEO is most responsible for the direction of the company. Everything else matters less. With that said, different investors have different views on what competence is. What is the best way to seek funding for startups in Indonesia? If seeking capital in a startup’s initial stages, the best way to meet funders is to first have a great (and well researched) idea, and then get out there and meet people. Discuss the idea. Potential investors are everywhere. There are many sources of capital beyond the typical “VC.” Put yourself out there and reach beyond your usual circles. At what point should a startup look for private investment? A startup should seek funding only when it needs it. Often times that means struggling without enough money to see if you actually need it or can bootstrap awhile longer. Having funding you don’t actually need can often be a curse, as that’s when you take your eye off the bottom line. I find that funding often flows to those who already have it. Therefore, those who need it have to really make the case for it. They need to demonstrate the results they can achieve once it is secured. Can you give examples of the amount of capital that a new company needs? The amount a new company needs can vary drastically. Are you a tour company that needs money to develop an advertising strategy or are you a small hotel chain that wants to invest in property? The needs can be very different depending on the growth strategy. What is the most effective way to present a startup’s activities to a potential investor or partner? Develop a concise way to explain what you do—how you add value and how you’re different. It takes a lot of thinking to be concise and comprehensive. The more concise the better. Every successful startup solves a specific tangible problem. If you can’t explain what that is, don’t bother trying to raise funding until you are able to explain it. And be prepared to always talk about what you’re doing. You never know who may be able to help. What should the presentation focus on? Investors want to see an opportunity. They are taking big risks, so they need to believe there is a clear path to profitability. They aren’t giving money to fund your dreams. They are giving money so they can make a return. They don’t just want to be a part of something innovative, but also something that is profitable. Is the CEO always the best person to make a presentation to investors? It would be great if the CEO could also be the person to pitch. But that’s not always the case. Sometimes they don’t have the best presentation or communication skills, but are very strong in other areas. In this situation they need others on their team – just as committed as they are - to communicate the message. How do you recognize talent in a company? Investors are looking for people with a track record of success. It’s hard for people to get money without a history of success. Investors want to feel the company they are giving money to has the competence to bring the company to the next stage of growth. Investors also want to see a strong leadership team where each person is well suited to their role. A crucial step in setting up a company is to find talented people to buy into your idea. You’re not going to build a company alone. Get a good team.
C/Ci/I-05 July 17
What are the key differences between those who get funded and those who don’t? The difference between the two can be as simple of timing. It would be a difficult time to start a transport company to compete against Uber or a platform for sharing property like Airbnb. You have to think what is next, what does the world not yet do but should. But there are a whole bunch of other reasons people don’t get funded. The market is slow; the team isn’t qualified or you are not meeting the right people. In short, there is only one reason you get funded. Investors believe there is an opportunity and that your company is the best positioned to address it. What are the most common mistakes that Indonesian startups make? Indonesian companies are not vastly different than other companies. They succeed and fail for the same reasons as international companies. The one difference is that the startup culture in Indonesia is still very young. Consequently, there are not a lot of seasoned entrepreneurs or mentors. This can make it challenging for a first-time entrepreneur to find sound business advice.
C/BT/G-13 Sept 17
What are the most common obstacles that make it difficult for a startup to succeed in Bali? Bali is a great place to start a company. The number of international ideas funneling through and the fact that you have a relaxed atmosphere to think through a business make it a fertile environment. After all, thirty years ago the tourism industry was comparatively small. Now Bali is a world class destination, thanks in no small part to many small-scale entrepreneurs building tourism-related businesses. Today, people look upon Bali increasingly as a place to seek inspiration to fuel new ideas that can grow in fertile Bali soil. Look no further than Livit to see a successful incubator. At the same time, regulations make it a challenge. What types of businesses are most likely to succeed in Bali? Historically, businesses that focus on agriculture, real estate and tourism are best placed for growth. Those three sectors do well on Bali. It doesn’t mean that other companies won’t succeed. Patterns in work and living are changing globally. That’s why we founded Outpost. People are no longer chained to traditional global innovation centers if they want to build a world class company. With the right amount of infrastructure, community and support, it can be done from anywhere.

31 Consciousness or Anti-Consciousness? I was speaking with someone the other day who shared her story. She told me that she was broken hearted because the man she loved walked out on her and her son. They had been living together when she got pregnant which was a surprise, as she was 44 years old and didn’t intend to have any more children. Yet, here she was at a huge crossroads in her life asking herself, “Should I keep this child or terminate the pregnancy?” It is a horrible place to be in. But this story isn’t so much about her choice to keep the child or terminate the pregnancy – it is about the abuse that she went through with her partner who bullied her every day, saying things like: “how can you do this to me?! You have to terminate your pregnancy now! You couldn’t possibly raise another child. Look how messed up your own son is.” I share this story not to condemn her partner, but to illustrate how abuse can take all forms. The damage this kind of emotional/mental abuse that was blasted at her had huge ramifications. She decided to terminate the pregnancy because she felt totally unsupported, unloved and dishonored. Not long after this termination her partner left her even though he had promised to stay if she chose to terminate her pregnancy. She was totally lost and fell into a deep depression. Sadly this man continued to abuse her with nasty text messages and phone calls. She felt herself falling deeper and deeper into a well of emptiness that she finally decided to go on anti-depressants so she could function in her life.

For me this is a clear example of anti-conscious behavior. If her partner had stopped to think for just one moment about the damage he was doing to her perhaps that would have been pause enough to react/act differently? Eckhart Tolle, gives a very cogent and clear explanation of how people react from their ‘pain bodies’. This is an energetic body that consists of all our painful and damaging lifelong experiences that we have not healed or resolved. Over time, we continue to have more painful experiences that add greater density to our pain bodies unless we can discover how to heal and release our wounds. Those with very dense pain bodies are easily triggered by any little thing. This causes them to become defensive or abusive towards another. Often these outbursts are totally irrational, because the person is reacting from a place of old pain or trauma. We all have pain bodies that vary in density, which may cause us to react in unkind or hurtful ways. However, if we choose to go deeper and discover our core wounds, we can then heal them and move into a place of greater consciousness. I’m truly disturbed by how much anti-consciousness exists in our world. Masses of people function from their ‘anti-consciousness’ and are unwilling to change. Just because someone says, “Oh sorry, I didn’t mean it. I didn’t realize that yelling at you would hurt you so much,” doesn’t make it okay. Now more than ever before we all need to choose to live our lives consciously. Buddhism gives us guidance on how we can live our lives consciously by choosing our thoughts, words, actions and non actions. I know this is not an easy ask, yet if we commit to doing this it will become easier with practice. Consciousness is the willingness to see how what we say or do has an effect on others. Every day I walk down my gang and usually see an old Balinese woman putting out frangipani flowers on a sheet to dry in the sun. Every time she sees me she smiles and says hello and I smile back and say hello too.

This simple interaction brings a lightness of being to us both. In this interaction, we share a mutual respect of one another and create a connection if only briefly. It is so true that energy follows our thoughts. Another story I’d like to share is of a father and son. One night the father and son were watching a movie together but the father was distracted. He was on his mobile phone looking at Facebook and not really present at all. The son was disappointed but didn’t say anything as he sat silently watching the movie. Then their big Rottweiler came up with a drooling mouth wanting to be with the family. The father yelled at the dog and pushed him away and the son also yelled too. The father misunderstood the boy’s actions thinking he was calling the dog to him which made the father mad, as he thought his son was going against his actions and disrespecting him. In that moment there was no consciousness as he hit the boy on the side of the head. It seemed to come out of nowhere. The father yelled, “why do you disrespect me?! I told the dog to go and you called him!” The boy buried his face in the sofa pillows and began crying. The damage had been done. This is how negative imprints are created in our subconscious; once this occurs it’s very hard to clear them but it’s possible. Imagine what the world would look like if we all chose to live consciously? If we rewrite these stories, then the boyfriend who abused the girlfriend would support her to make her own choice with the pregnancy and even if he didn’t want to stay with her, he at least didn’t make her wrong for her choice. The father, who hit the son, might choose instead to hug his son and tell him that he was having a hard day. This positive action would then create a connection between them and a deepening of their love. What choice can you make today that will contribute to someone’s life? Yes we can have paradise on earth but for that to be so, we all must choose consciousness.

RUBELLA (German Measles) So the word on the streets here in Bali has it that rubella is the flavor of the month in several schools and childcare facilities. This disease has largely been eliminated in developing countries due to ongoing vaccination programs. Here in Bali where there are significant numbers of people choosing not to vaccinate, as well as the fact the MMR (mumps/measles/ rubella) vaccine has been very difficult to come by here for several years now, vaccine preventable disease is starting to make the rounds again. What is rubella? Rubella is an infectious disease caused by a virus. It is also known as German measles or three-day measles, but it is not the same disease as measles. Rubella is often mild with half of people not realizing that they are sick. Young children who get rubella usually have a mild illness, with symptoms that can include a low-grade fever, sore throat, and a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Older children and adults are more likely to have a headache, pinkeye, and general discomfort before the rash appears. Rubella is usually spread to others through sneezing or coughing. In young children, rubella is usually mild, with symptoms that include a low-grade fever, sore throat, and a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Older children and adults are more likely to experience headache, pink eye, and general discomfort before the rash appears. Aching joints occur in many cases, especially among young women. The most serious complication from rubella infection is the harm it can cause to a pregnant woman’s unborn baby.
nated pregnant woman gets infected with rubella virus it can lead to miscarriage, or her baby can die before or just after birth. She may pass the virus to her unborn baby who can develop serious birth defects, such as heart problems, loss of hearing and eyesight, intellectual disability, and liver or spleen damage. Serious birth defects are more common if a woman is infected early in her pregnancy, especially in the first 12 weeks. Infections in women who are more than 20 weeks pregnant rarely cause problems. Why is it called rubella or German Measles? The name “rubella” is from Latin and means “little red (rash)”. German physicians first described the illness as a specific disease in 1814 resulting in the name “German measles.”
Any woman who is planning to become pregnant should be tested for antibodies to make sure that she is immune to rubella. If she has no antibody protection, she may be offered the vaccine. All women who are already pregnant should be tested for antibodies, and if they are negative, extra precaution should be taken in the first 3 months of pregnancy. (Women who are already pregnant may not receive the vaccine).
How is rubella treated? There is no specific treatment for Rubella, other than to keep the patient cool and comfortable and manage the symptoms. Paracetamol may be given for fever or aches and pains. Calamine based lotions or oatmeal baths may help with the skin irritation. Extra fluids and rest will also help. If you are unsure if the rash is really rubella, a simple blood test will confirm this. It may also be wise to do an antibody test several weeks after the illness to see if antibodies have formed, which will give you future protection. (One episode of rubella illness should protect you for life). How can we prevent rubella?
Who gets rubella? Anyone who is not immune from either previous rubella infection or from vaccination can get rubella. If an unvacci-
mumps vaccine, known as the MMR vaccine at 12 months of age, and again at 4-5 years.
Rubella is preventable with the rubella vaccine with a single dose being more than 95% effective. Usually it is given to children in combination with the measles vaccine and

The Frugal Balinist ✱ Gardening. To get rid of rhinoceros’ beetle (kumbang badak) use the chemical insecticide Sevin (Rp8000 per pack) or pour tobacco juice into the top of the brownish infestation of the palm. *Baking soda removes the slickness left in vases of cut flowers. *Dried flowers, bouquets, reeds and grasses sprouting out of ceramic vessels are very striking, low maintenance and maintain their beauty for years. Create decorative plants by drying upside down along a string in a dry place with good ventilation.
✱ Health alerts. Don’t accept a reused plastic bag to carry ready-to-eat food because it may have been used to carry takeaways, pesticides, chemicals, heavy metal wastes, medical waste or animal and human wastes. *Balinese eat plain soft-boiled rice porridge (bubur) to remedy diarrhea. *JADEC air safety survey of 407 airlines in the world places 9 out of 10 of the worst ranking in Indonesia. *A thin slice of bawang merah (red onion) placed on a mosquito bite quickly eliminates itching. *Pineapple aids digestion, reduces fevers and has a laxative effect. *According to a Stanford University research study, Indonesia came in last among 46 countries for the number of walking steps its citizens take, averaging only 3,513 per day (in comparison to residents of Hong Kong with 6,880). *Hydrocortisone is a hyper bargain on Bali at Rp6500 for a small 5 gr tube (2.5% strength). ✱ Tipping pointers. Restaurants and bars will tell you that it’s a government rule that guests must pay a 5% to 10% service charge on food and drink, even on take-out food! This on top of the government tax of 10% to 20%. But there is no such regulation that states that it is compulsory for a customer to pay a service charge and how much the charge should be. There is no uniformity or any standard for service charges in Indonesia. One regulation issued by the Manpower Ministry, (Reg. No. PER02/MEN/1999) only stipulates that owners of hotels, restaurants and other tourist facilities must give service charge earnings to their employees after subtracting no more than 10% “for employee training and improving the quality of the service.” In truth, giving or not giving a tip is up to you. Some restaurants automatically include a 5-10% service charge to their bill. If a fancy restaurant doesn’t levy any service charge, tip 10% of the total bill if the service has been good. Smaller restaurants and warung don’t levy any service charge and would never pay it to the government if they did. Karaoke venues tell its customers that they should give a Rp500,000 tip for every sixhour sessions. Massage and spa parlors often have a fixed tip. ✱ Techie corner. With 45 million users in Indonesia, the largest in the Asia-Pacific region, the photo sharing social media platform Instagram is a lucrative platform to sell your product. *Password manager LastPass works with every browser and most mobile phones and its interface is relatively simple. *Wordless videos on the ‘Primitive Technology’ YouTube channel demonstrate how to build a tile-roofed hut, kiln, spear thrower, etc. *VPN service www.privateinternetaccess.com is reliable, high-speed and anonymous with packages starting at $3.33/mo. *Internet cafes and co-working hubs that boast “the fastest internet” just parrot their provider’s claims. Advertised speed means little when it comes to how an internet provider slices bandwidth. There is so much variance in quality, even from the same provider.
✱ Moneywise. *Fraser Institute, a Canadian research organization, ranked Indonesia the 99th most difficult country to invest in out of 104 countries in 2016 because of its myriad rules and regulations. *Bali products that are the most sought after in Java and other areas of Indonesia: Kopi Bali Rp60,000/kg; ketan rice Rp15,000/kg; coconut oil (minyak kelapa) Rp20,000/600 ml; Sarung Bali beachware (Rp70,000); kamben perempuan (women’s skirt) Rp50,00; Mukenah (Islamic woman’s prayer garment) Rp100,000 to Rp175,000. *If you want to know if you can trust lending someone money, lend him money. *Every Saturday night at 8 pm, Ayodya Resort Bali (tel. 0361-771-102) presents for free outstanding classic motion pictures on its “Movie Night;” food and drinks service available. *Withdraw only from ATM machines that dispense Rp100,000 notes (not Rp50,000 notes) to reach your daily maximum withdrawal amount because it saves on overseas bank charges. *Uang komisi or uang dengar means money given to someone because of what he knows about a certain transaction, i.e. finder’s fee. *Membership of Ace Hardware (Rp100,000/year; renewals Rp50,000/year) gets you points for every purchase of Rp100,000 or over, promo offers all year long at various merchants and hotels, free shipping and birthday gifts.

✱ Airline baggage dos and don’ts. Long distance carriers charge less than regional carriers for extra checked in bags. For example, Saudi allows two free 23 kg checked bags and China Airlines allows two free 32 kg bags whereas Air Asia charges US$60 for two 20 kg checked bags ($25 for the first bag; $37 for the second). *It costs less if you check your baggage online before your Air Asia flight. *Air Asia is very fussy about carry-ons, allowing only a combined weight of 7 kg for all your carry-ons. Expect that they will ask you to actually weigh what you are carrying onboard the aircraft. *Arrive at least two hours before your flight or you will be charged the cost of a new flight if you miss your flight. *Substantially more bulk and weight can be packed in a large strong cardboard box. Because the box weighs just a few pounds and a heavy suitcase can weigh up to 15 pounds, you gain at least 12 pounds using the box. It’s not allowed to use rope to tie the box or plastic to cover the box. You must still adhere to the size limit of the length, width and depth (no more than 62” inches total). ✱ Education news. Something needs to be done about the literacy of future generations of Indonesian children. A 2016 study by Central Connecticut State University placed Indonesia as the 60th most literate nation out of 61 nations, above only Botswana. The Indonesian children’s magazine Bobo online site (http://bobo.grid.id) entertains and educates with fiction, fairytales, crafts, science, history, culture, practical advice for elementary school children. *BKPA (Society for the Advancement of Children’s Literature) has published a list of children’s books that applaud Indonesia’s multiculturalism. *LINE Academy (https://lineacademy.ruangguru.com/tryout) is a digital tutoring and national exam and university entrance test preparation service for Indonesian students. ✱ Free postal book delivery. Pos Indonesia will send a package of books up to 10 kg for free on the 17th of each month from 11 regional offices across Indonesia. This is an incredible deal for sending books to distant places like Papua, Sulawesi and eastern Indonesia. Normally, to send books from Denpasar to Jayapura in Papua costs at least Rp83,000 per kilo and maybe even more, depending on from where and to where it is sent as well as the size of the package (check regular shipping rates at cektarif.com). The catch is that the 17th of each month must all fall on a work day. In August it fell on Indonesia’s Independence Day and in July the 17th fell on a Sunday. Local News Kenyan runners dominate Maybank Bali Marathon As expected, Kenyans dominated the annual Maybank Bali Marathon (MBM) 2017 on Sunday, seizing top spots in the coveted Full Marathon Open Male and Open Female categories as well as in the remaining four open categories. Twenty-nine-year-old Henry Kiprotich Sang made a surprising debut in MBM 2017 after finishing the full marathon in 02:19:17, which earned him first place in the Full Marathon Open Male category and Rp 189 million (US$14,160) cash prize handed over by PT Bank Maybank Indonesia president director Taswin Zakaria. “This is my first time to race in Bali, in Indonesia, and I will surely come back next year,” he said with a big smile. Kiprotich’s fellow countrymen, Cosmas Matolo and Kennedy Lilan, came second and third, respectively, in the category. In the Full Marathon Female Open, Elizabeth Chepkanan Rumokol finished first with 02:38:38, followed by Edinah Jeruto and Gladys Jepkechei Tarus. All are Kenyans. Wiryawan Jaya Subangkit booked 02:41:53 to take the top place in the Full Marathon Indonesian Male category, while Meri Mariana Paijo with 03:01:54 won in the Full Marathon Indonesian Female category. The race was a successful, well-organized event with clear road signs, sufficient water stations and toilets along the course, as well as more than adequate amenities, from food and beverage stalls to first aid stations, which awaited the finishers in the spacious compound of the Bali Safari and Marine Park in Gianyar. PT Bank Maybank Indonesia director for global banking Eri Budiono extended his gratitude to sponsors, partners, government agencies and local communities for the success of the event. “There are several new things being introduced in this year’s event that presented new challenges for us. The event went smoothly and for that I want to say thank you to all.” Bali Safari and Marine Park general manager Thomas Colbert said the park was proud to host the marathon. [The Jakarta Post August 27, 2017] Aussie fugitive demands $3.5 million in bitcoin for media interview after Bali prison escape Australian prison-breaker Shaun Davidson, on the run from authorities after breaking out of a Bali prison, is demanding to be paid $3.5 million in bitcoin for a media phone interview. Shaun Davidson is now seen as Australia’s most notorious prison escapee after burrowing a 15-meter tunnel under the walls of Bali’s overcrowded Kerobokan prison on June 19 this year, with three other prisoners. Davidson was originally jailed for a year behind bars in Indonesia for using another man’s passport with charges related to immigration offences. Only 10 weeks away from completing his sentence, Davidson staged an astonishing escape after digging through a waste tunnel – nearly 15 meters long and just a half a meter wide – with three other foreigners from the prison. Davidson continues to be on the run and, predictably, the story of his breakout continues to make for compelling news coverage in Australia. The 33-year old has now allegedly reached out to a reporter at Australia’s News Corp, demanding bitcoin in return for an interview described as “the holy grail of journalism” by Davidson. Australian laws dictate that convicted criminals cannot be allowed to make profits from speaking to the media about details related to the crime. To get around this particular hurdle, Davidson is connecting media with his sister, or at least someone purporting to be her. Reaching out via Wickr, a Snapchat-like messaging app with an auto-delete feature, Davidson’s sister wrote: Exclusive interview no restrictions $3500000 paid in bitcoin…if not accepted in time and payment made soon after the deals off the table [sic] every week that goes by the price increases. A disclaimer by the publication added that it did not, nor does it ever intend to pay the bitcoin sought by Shaun Davidson or his alleged sister. Meanwhile, Davidson has taken to Facebook to regularly taunt Australian law enforcement agencies about his escape and regularly ‘checks-in’ to various locations around the world. Davidson purportedly ‘checked in’ at the McDonalds outlet in Singapore’s Changi airport yesterday, days after checking in Atapupu in Indonesia and Oistins, a coastal village in Barbados. [Cryptocoins News August 30, 2017] Escaped Malaysian prisoner believed to be in home country, say Bali police Indonesian police have received information that Malaysian national Tee Kok King, who escaped from Bali’s Kerobokan Penitentiary in June along with three other foreign inmates, may be in his home country. Another escapee, Australian national Shaun Edward Davidson, is still believed to be in Indonesia, Bali police chief Insp Gen Petrus Reinhard Golose said on Tuesday. “We have been coordinating with Malaysian authorities, as we suspect he is already in Malaysia,” Petrus told journalists. The police chief said Malaysian authorities were willing to help find Tee. However, should the inmate really be in the country, he could not be extradited to Indonesia, given that Malaysian law prohibits citizens from being extradited from the country, Petrus said. “It is a real obstacle that the inmate is (probably) already in his country, but we will continue to cooperate with Malaysia,” he said. As for Davidson, who is believed to still be in Bali, Petrus said police would intensify monitoring at the Timor-Leste border in East Nusa Tenggara. Two other inmates, Bulgarian Dimitar Nikolov Iliev and Indian Sayed Muhammad Said, were arrested in Timor-Leste four days after their escape. The four inmates escaped on June 19 through an old unused tunnel. Davidson recently made headlines after he allegedly taunted police by uploading a wanted poster with his face and fingerprints to Facebook. Arrested in early 2016 for over-staying his visa, Davidson was also found to have used multiple fake identities. [Asia News Network August 23, 2017] Indonesia’s national rail network aims for more growth, less inequality Indonesia has finalised its plan for a national railway network, which as envisioned by President Joko Widodo, will beef up land connections and support all seven of its key seaport hubs. The network will also include a separate circle line around Bali to offer better access to untapped parts of the resort island where new tourism developments can be built. With more than 3,200km of train tracks that will criss-cross the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi, it has been touted as the most extensive railway project in Indonesia since its independence from the Dutch 72 years ago. Once completed, the project is expected to not only drive trade and economic growth, but the government also hopes the improved inter-connectivity will lower inequality in less developed regions. “Another reason for the strategy is to grow the tourism sector,” added Mr Wismana. “We have identified 14 industrial zones for priority development, but we also want to create 10 new ‘Balis’, or 10 new tourist destinations.” But Bali will also receive a boost under the new plan with a possible railway that goes around the island, The Straits Times has learnt. Mr Atmadji Sumarkidjo, a senior official from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, pointed to areas in north Bali, where the lack of access has slowed growth. “They have already built cottages there but without connectivity, the occupation rate has been low,” he added. “So with the northern part relatively deserted, compared to the packed southern parts of Bali, connecting north and south of the island by rail is a good solution.” Not all of the railway lines will be built at the same time, said Mr Wismana, when asked about the project’s timeline. [The Straits Times September 4, 2017] Large whale washes ashore in west Bali Villagers of Yeh Kuning in Jembrana were shocked by the appearance of a large dead whale that washed up on the shore of their village. Beritabali.com reports that a local fisherman made the discovery at 7:00 am on Wednesday, August 30, when he saw the rotting carcass of the large whale floating some 200 meters from the shoreline. The large mammal, estimated to measure 7-meters in length and weighing 3 tons, may have been dead for as much as a month judging from its advanced state of decay. The remains washed up in front of a local temple, emitting the stench of decay that was detectable over a large area and prompted local officials to hurriedly set about disposing of the dead animal. Several days after the discovery, a backhoe was brought to the beach to dig a seaside grave for the whale that had to be cut into sections so it could be maneuvered into the impromptu burial site. Convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby offers advice to people travelling to Bali Convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby has shared some travel advice to people thinking about visiting Bali over the upcoming Christmas break. The 40-year-old took to Instagram on Sunday with a throwback post marking exactly three months since she signed her parole release papers and flew back home. Corby, who has built up a huge social media profile since returning to Australia with over 200,000 followers on Instagram alone, was asked about sightseeing in Bali. ‘I’m going to Bali in two weeks Schapelle, do you have any sight seeing recommendations?’ one woman wrote. Corby bluntly replied: ‘Lock you(r) bags.’ ‘Thanks for the tip xx,’ the woman responded. Corby was arrested in 2005 after Balinese customs officials discovered 4.1 kilograms of marijuana hidden in her body board bag. She was convicted of importing the drug and jailed for 20 years, but released on parole in 2014. She returned to Australia on May 27th of this year.Since returning to Queensland’s Gold Coast, Corby has tried to regain a sense of normality, keeping a relatively low profile and spending time with family. The brunette has been snapped doing everyday chores like dropping off paperwork for her driver’s license, visiting JB Hi-Fi and road-tripping along the east coast. [Mail Online August 28, 2017] Young Englishman prevented from leaping to his death in Kuta An English tourist, Adam Healy Matthew (20), was coaxed down from a water tower located on the third floor of the Hotel Bendesa in Kuta on Tuesday, August 28, 2017. Police and security guards, fearing Matthew was preparing to jump to his death, managed to get the man off the tower he climbed at around 8:00 pm, sending employees and guests at the hotel into a panic, prompting a call to Kuta Police for assistance. Beritabali.com says the Londoner had been staying at the hotel for two days before the apparent suicide attempt unfolded. Police from the Search and Rescue Team of the Bali Police, the Police Disaster Mitigation Team and the Fire Department responded to the scene. Once safely back on the ground, police brought the man to the BIMC Hospital who referred to man to Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar. The preliminary diagnosis was that the man was suffering from severe depression. [www.balidiscovery.com September 3, 2017] Two foreigners in Bali deported for moonlighting as dive instructors Two foreigners have been deported by the Singaraja immigration in North Bali for performing a job that is not in accordance with their KITAS work permits. Singaraja Class II Immigration office head Victor Manurung said that the two foreigners, identified as 43 year-old man from Canada and 29 year-old woman from Denmark, were found working as dive instructors, when a subsequent investigation found that the pair’s KITAS were obtained for the roles of president director of a tourist attraction and sales marketing manager, respectively. “Foreigners working in Indonesia must be working in accordance with what is submitted to the manpower office, related to the job title. On their KITAS permits, it is listed as president director and sales marketing manager, but they were caught working as dive instructors. It’s a shame for local dive instructors who cannot get work,” Manurung said on Wednesday, as quoted by Sindonews.com. He assured that the deportation of the two foreigners was a result of a process of an investigation carried out by the Immigration office. Having been found guilty of violating their KITAS terms, the work permits of the two foreigners were immediately revoked. Manurung added that the Immigration office will continue to keep an eye on foreigners in their jurisdiction of Buleleng, Jembrana, dan Karangasem that may be working outside of the capacity of their work permits. “We are still investigating, but we will continue to monitor foreign nationals in the area,” he said. [Indonesia Expat August 31, 2017] Charred bodies of Japanese couple found Bali residence Police on the island of Bali suspect foul play following the discovery of the charred bodies of an elderly Japanese couple at their residence on Monday. At around 12:00 p.m., the scorched bodies of Norio Matsuba (76) and his wife Hiroko, who is the same age, were found in a second-floor bedroom of their residence, located in the village of Jimbaran. The faces of both persons had been completely burned. According to fire officials, many of the rooms of the structure had been damaged by fire. As well, bloodstains were found coming out of a first-floor bathroom and extending to a bedroom on the second floor, possibly indicating a body had been dragged, the authorities added. The bodies were initially found by the couple’s adopted son, who is an Indonesian national. Police are now questioning him, their maid and driver about the case. [Tokyo Reporter September 5, 2017]
