Hey! That would make it two perfect days in Bali and is a wonderful example of what myredenvelope. com has to offer. To enter the competition to WIN ‘One Perfect Day in Bali’ simply Join as a Member at www.myredenvelope.com and Like us on www.facebook.com/MyLittleRedEnvelope Competition ends 28 Feb 2018. To celebrate the launch of our new website, MyRedEnvelope invites you to Join Our Table: Where: Ji Restaurant, Canggu When: 15th February 2018 at 6pm Join us and win one night stay voucher at Hotel Tugu Bali! Drop your name card in the entrance and we will draw one lucky winner. Also businesses are invited to claim a free listing on MyRedEnvelope by supporting a charity of their choice. So now you can have a positive impact on the local community, simply by choosing to support any of the businesses listed on the website. For example, by choosing any business that supports Social Impakt, you will be providing safe drinking water to people displaced by Mount Agung. At MyRedEnvelope we have learnt that often businesses are very happy to help those in need where they can. Many already do this and have partnerships with Yayasans, others give when the opportunity arises. MyRedEnvelope is linking all of this together with our website which enables our members to locate businesses which support charities. It also helps charities and businesses find each other. In the era of social networking this can be an incredibly powerful networking opportunity. Indonesia already has a policy of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which encourages businesses to support the local community that they are working in. Mostly this is applied to big corporations in industries such as mining and forestry. Via MyRedEnvelope all businesses can now put into practise their own CSR programme. Members are a key ingredient to the success of MyRedEnvelope and with the launch of our new website everyone now has the opportunity to be an effective part of this new and exciting initiative. Membership is free and when you choose to support one of the businesses it will not cost you anything extra. The business will make a donation directly to the charity it supports, typically 10% of your bill. We invite you all to join now and hopefully win the One Perfect Day in Bali! NC/BT/U-14 Feb 18

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch
“Izin share”, “Pesbuk” dan “Wazap” So often I come across this comment by Indonesian “pesbukers”. Meaning “May I share?” (this post/photo/video), it not only shows to me (and millions of people who are watching them across the planet on social media) several things about Indonesians and the culture they live in. Indonesians are both polite and like to pretend they’re polite. Certainly in public most Indonesians don’t like taking social risks, such as expressing an opinion or making a fuss. Perhaps in this case they don’t want to cause offence by sharing something that isn’t intended to be shared. Many people here like to lick up to people who they feel have a higher status or are older than themselves: they attempt to do this by being uber polite. Many Indonesians don’t understand and don’t know how to use social media. E.g. the difference between a communications app like Whatsapp (“Wazap”) or Line and a platform like FB or Twitter. If a post is made on FB it means that it is meant to be shared unless the person who posted has set the permissions otherwise. So there is no need to ever ask permission from the poster. If the permissions are set so that the posters’ posts can’t be shared, then you won’t be able to share their posts even if you want to. With lack of knowledge of how a platform like Facebook works, I’ve known Indonesians to block friends and even family members claiming that they are sick of seeing them posting too much. An obvious common knowledge way around this is simply to unfollow.

A lot of people in Bali don’t know how to act with social norms in a group on apps such as Whatsapp or Line. Rather than use it for the communicative function within the parameters of the theme or aim of the group, many members send irrelevant material to the group members that can be annoying (selling services or products) or cause offence (violent or pornographic images and videos). For example, my wife who is a member of our village committee group where they use WA to communicate. A number of the male members regular post humorous images which are sexual in nature to the group instead of writing messages: culturally this demonstrates not only low levels of education but also reflects the patriarchal and chauvinistic attitudes in general Indonesian society. In my next article, I’m going to explain why perhaps a large portion of Indonesian society is so left behind in terms of understanding of computers and the Internet.

Come down on Day 1 - Thursday February 22nd, from 7am to see masterpieces in the making as the sand sculptors get to work on painstakingly crafting their winning creations on the pantai in the ‘Lomba Patung Pasir (sand sculpting contest). The Minister of Tourism will conduct the official opening ceremony from 3pm with art exhibitions and a cultural dance display to follow. The evening entertainment line up across the four days of the festival promises performances from a number of Bali’s top musicians including bands Lolot, Rocktober and 4WD, along with celebrated reggae artist Joni Agung and friends and Indonesian Ethnic Jazz artist, Balawan. The towering palm trees that frame Finns Beach Club’s Lawn are set to be transformed by Artjog from Jakarta, posing as quite the backdrop for the rest of the festival activities! Day 2 offers a show of traditional dance and Gamelan performance along with a shadow puppet show - something many a beach combing Bali visitor may not usually have an opportunity to witness on their holiday to this tropical tourist mecca. Afternoon entertainment on Day 3 consists of a Balinese comedy show and contemporary dance competition, with the pace changing somewhat into the evening with reggae beats from Joni

Ever wondered why those trampoline boards look suspiciously like a little, soft snowboard? Cos that’s kinda how the idea to create a Bounce Board came about! Determined to practice his flying techniques during the off season, a young American lad wanted to create something his mum would let him use to get even more height on the backyard trampoline! He was keen to design something a little lighter and softer around the edges to use instead of his snowboard so that he could keep all of his teeth (smart boy!) The result was a curved, padded and flexible board made of a much lighter and softer material that meant he could get even more air! Apparently mum approved and he was encouraged by his high school teachers to patent the idea. Numerous prototypes and fourteen years later, the Bounce Board has become a
popular addition to trampolines across the world and a tool used by many a surfer, skateboarder, skier and snowboarder to hone and perfect their jumping skills without the need for ramps, rails, half pipes…..or snow for that matter! Now you’re not likely to get any snow on this tropical isle, but Bounce Bali has plenty of these boards available for you to practice your flips, Mctwists, Ollies and more! Love to jump? Get more height and take your airtime tricks to another level with Bounce Boards. Strong and sturdy and constructed of dense EVA foam, Bounce Boards mean you can jump higher for longer. Double D ring straps wrap over your foot to securely attach the board and all you have to do then is bounce! An innovative piece of equipment that is finding its way into the regular and off season training practices and programs of many

WATER, THE ESSENCE OF BALI Gentle Reader, let us meditate upon the element of water. We have quite a lot of raw material to consider, given the constant downpours of the past few months. Deluge follows deluge. Ponds overflow. Trees topple, landslides scar the riverbanks, roads and walkways disappear under muddy lakes. Clothes and leather sprout acrid colonies of mildew. Being so very wet, I decided to make lemonade and explore Bali’s unique relationship with water. My guide, as so often when I have questions about Balinese culture, is Hindu scholar I Made Suryasa (Surya),
Early in the morning while praying to greet the sunrise and bless the world, the Pedanda starts a small, slow fire of fragrant woods in an incense burner. He or she overturns a glass or ceramic bowl over it to capture the smoke and the essence of the aromatics. When the container is full of smoke, the pedanda quickly rights it, immediately fills it with water from a sacred source and covers it so the water is infused with the smoke. When the Pedanda or other high priest recites the mantras called mapuja, s/he invokes the energy of the five great rivers of India to enter the holy water. Then more prayers are chanted relating to the five sacred syllables (panca aksara), conjuring their power into the toya to form the Great Tirta or Mother of Holy Water. Belief in the power of harmonic energy or sound in the form of prayers and mantras transforms toya to tirta. After praying, aromatic flowers are tossed into the water; the Balinese believe that flowers are the symbols in which reside the essence of their prayers. Holy water hums with energy. Anyone who has ever sipped it from cupped palms knows the smoky flavour, the fragrance of flowers, the cool sweetness of it. The water from young yellow or green coconuts (bungkak) can also be consecrated by a Pedanda and used to cleanse people, objects and buildings.
What is now known as Bali Hindu Dharma used to be called Agama Tirta, or Religion of Holy Water. Socially, agriculturally and ritually, water is central to every element of Balinese life. Water surrounds the island, falls from the sky, courses down the riverbeds, nourishes the rice fields, springs from solid rock in deep ravines and, as holy water, blesses the rituals and offerings that are an integral part of Balinese culture. “Building anything from a toilet to a temple involves holy water,” Surya explained. “Occupations which require the invocation of taksu (divine inspiration) such as dalang, architect, mask carver, priest, dancer, all require special rituals. Throughout life, from the specific prayers for a pregnant woman before a birth to the death ceremonies, holy water is an essential element. There are at least 19 auspicious days each month for most Balinese, requiring rituals which include holy water.”
There is unlikely to be a Pedanda in Toronto, Tokyo or Timbuktu. If a Balinese overseas needs holy water, ordinary people can consecrate pure water from sacred sources by intention and the harmonic power of prayer. What alchemy turns ordinary water (toya) into holy water (tirta)? The mystical combination of intention and ritual. At sacred springs, the toya has special powers. The springs at Tirta Empul in Tempaksiring have been used to cleanse the living and the dead since the 10th century. There are two spigots from which people can draw water to take home. One (bersikan) is for the cleansing of the corpse. The other (pangentas) blesses the journey by water of the ashes after the cremation when they are released into a river or the sea; both are equally powerful in disseminating the spirit.
If you’ve spent much time in Bali you’ll be familiar with the daily offerings sprinkled with holy water. If you’ve prayed Balinese-style, you have been blessed with it. If you live here, you may have a jar of it at the back of the fridge with a flower in it, beside the pickles. (Although Surya assures me that it should be in the shrine, Wayan Manis likes to keep some there.)
The role of water in the cultivation of rice is central to the Bali Hindu culture and pre-dates the influence of the Majapahit beginning in the 13th century. Bali has about 1,200 subak or rice farming cooperatives that manage and share irrigation water. These complex water distribution systems have been engineered over a millenia to bring water from rivers and volcanic crater lakes through mountain tunnels, canals and weirs (diversionary dams) to nurture the island’s rice terraces. Each subak has its own water temple dedicated to the rice Goddess Dewi Sri.
Holy water will be from one or more of three sources: the house of a high priest (Pedanda), a sacred spring or other natural source, or the ocean. Sea water or tirta segara is important in the Melaspas or cleansing ceremony three days before Nyepi and certain other rituals.
These days it’s hard to understand of the importance of the rice crop in Bali. Life revolved around rice, which fed the people and created wealth for the rulers. According to the book ‘Priests and Programmers’, a fascinating analysis of Bali’s engineered landscapes by anthropologist Stephen
Lansing, one of the earliest known writings in the Balinese language in the 8th century referred to the builders of irrigation tunnels. The oldest human settlements in Bali are concentrated in the best rice growing areas. It was all about rice. Before the rainy season every year, priests from each subak gather at Lake Batur Temple to pay respect to the spirit of water, Dewi Danu. These priests are very knowledgeable about rice farming and water availability. The heads of each subak also gather here and together they discuss how the rice crops will be synchronised within subaks and from one subak to another. Every subak of between 50 and 400 rice farmers cooperates not only within itself, but with every other subak in its watershed. They must coordinate the amount of water used in each subak to ensure they all receive an equal amount according to the size of the rice fields. This ancient cooperation around controlled irrigation created a very effective form of pest control. Since all the farmers in the same subak planted and harvested their crops at the same time and either flooded or burned the stalks, nothing was left for the rats and insects. Cultivating the rice crop involves both toya and tirta. First the seeds are planted in a small nursery which has its own shrine where offerings are placed to ensure good germination. There are more offerings when planting the rice out in the fields and again when the rice flowers. Just before the rice is harvested, the rice goddess Dewi Sri is invoked and asked for permission to cut the rice. The first rice to be cut is fashioned into a doll or effigy representing Dewi Sri and placed on a temple in the field until the harvest is over. When the harvested rice is carried to the house and rice barn, the effigy accompanies it. A final ritual of ‘sitting down’ the rice goddess in the lumbung with the rice closes the harvest cycle. Like the rice, the Balinese people are nourished with toya and blessed with tirta. And the transformation of an ordinary element into a holy one is part of the everyday magic of this magical place.

I feel proud to be a Rotarian then. I wish I could do more. On behalf of our Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua, thank you to our fellow Rotarians. A bigger thankyou to the Grand Hyatt, Bali for their huge contribution to the event. Last but not least, a great big thank you and hug to all the children who attended the 2017 RCBND/Grand Hyatt Orphanage Christmas Party.
An Uplifting Experience Through Western Eyes! (Pengalaman Menggembirakan – Melalui Mata Barat!) Let my soul smile through my heart and my heart smile through my eyes. That I may scatter rich smiles in sad hearts (Paramahansa Yoganda, Indian Leader – 1893 – 1952). The year is progressing quickly and our Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua is busy working on its current and new charitable projects. These include but are not restricted to: Cleft Palate and Lip; HIV/AIDS; Yasan Kasih Anak Kanker; Yayasan Puspadi Bali; Suryani Institute; End Polio Now; Bali Children Foundation and Secondary School Scholarships. One sunny morning, when it has finally stopped raining, I think back to a memorable event: The Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua/Grand Hyatt Bali Annual Orphanage Christmas Party, 2017. The Grand Hyatt Ballroom is superbly decorated with sparkling Xmas trees. Long tables covered with black, red and white tablecloths are arranged neatly across the room. The staff of the Grand Hyatt, Bali have obviously been busy for some time. Goodie bags
for the children were donated by our Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua. Fellow Rotarians are busy picking up the children from orphanages. Approximately 350 children aged between 5 and 15 years of age, from orphanages and various handicapped organisations, attend the Orphange Party. As we enter the venue I expect to see large crowds of noisy children playing outside, as one may see at home in Australia, but I am wrong. Throughout the whole afternoon and evening, the children are focused on various activities and in providing entertainment to the audience. In the foyer to the ballroom, a large number of children are being photographed with three Santa Clauses, scattered within the group. I have never seen more than one Santa Claus at an event before! Tears fill my eyes and my heart does a flip at the sight before me. I smile back at the children, not just then but throughout the whole evening. I look up at my fellow Rotarians standing next to me. They too, are smiling. I keep thinking about rich smiles and sad hearts. Other children are busy in the several rooms running off the ballroom, making gingerbread men and playing games. Many children are dressed in various traditional costumes and uniforms. Later in the day whilst eating our meal, the children entertain us with singing and dancing, often combined with traditional instruments like the Angklung. Their performances which reflect much practice, are remarkable, despite any disabilities. Although most are, not all of the children are orphans, a fellow Rotarian explains. Some have only one parent who could not look after them. There is one long table with about 30 children and a sign: “Mt Agung Refugees.” I remember western tourists complaining about flight changes and delays. I wonder if any thought about the effect that the disruptive Mt Agung has had on the children and their parents?
For any of the children who may read this article or have it read to them, remember always what the great Indonesian writer Pramoeyda Toer wrote, from his prison cell on the small island of Buru: You can create new conditions and a different reality. Everything that is worthwhile can be inspired by dreams and imagination. I am sure all of you have plenty of it! Readers are welcome to attend our Rotary lunch meetings (Thursdays 1-2 pm). Come along to celebrate the occasion with us and enjoy great food, entertainment, raffles and prizes. BHA Blood Drive (26 February) This is rather an unusual event. However, it is an extremely important one. The Bali Hotels Association is inviting the community to come along and give blood. Why? Quite simply giving blood saves lives. The blood you give is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments. Many people would not be alive today if donors had not generously given their blood. In the UK, over 6,000 blood donations are needed each day to treat patients across England alone. Imagine Indonesia with a much higher population. The BHA needs your help so please come along and donate your blood to this good cause and help save lives. Perhaps one of your goals this year is to help others and this is exactly how you can make a positive difference to the lives of others in need. Local News Islamic hardliners in Indonesia push to outlaw premarital sex Unmarried tourists could face jail in Bali if they have sex, under proposed Indonesian laws after a petition from Islamic hardliners to change the criminal code will be put forward to Indonesia’s Constitutional Court this year. Riding a tsunami of moral conservatism and anti-gay prejudice, Indonesia’s Islamic political parties appear on the cusp of a major victory: outlawing all sex outside marriage. Revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code being considered by Parliament would allow prison sentences of up to five years for sex between unmarried people. Those changes would also criminalize gay sex, the bugbear of Indonesia’s Islamic and secular political parties. Rights groups and legal experts fear a profound setback to human rights and privacy in Indonesia, one of the world’s largest democracies, and the spread of vigilantism, already common in parts of the sprawling Muslim-majority nation of more than 250 million people. They are racing to organize opposition. An online petition launched this week has gathered more than 20,000 signatures. “Indonesia, whose constitution guarantees human rights and has ratified many human rights covenants, will be ridiculed by the world for creating a law that is potentially violating many of those rights,” said Said Muhammad Isnur, head of advocacy at the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute Foundation. While the possible criminalization of sex between unmarried consenting adults has grabbed attention, the revised criminal code, which has nearly 800 articles, also contains changes that could weaken checks and balances in Indonesia’s young democracy. One article potentially makes criticism of the president defamation and other articles could be used to weaken the Corruption Eradication Commission, one of Indonesia’s most effective public institutions. Asrul Sani, a lawmaker from the Islamic-based United Development Party, has told reporters that a 25-member parliamentary working committee agreed on nearly all the articles in the revised code. It and another Islamic party are seeking longer prison sentences for gay sex in circumstances that involve force, public acts or pornography and that is still being argued, he said. Statements from different committee members indicate there isn’t total agreement but a majority of parties appear to support criminalizing gay sex. Bambang Soesatyo, the speaker of Parliament and a lawmaker from the major secular party Golkar, said same-sex relationships should be criminalized because they could “corrupt the morality of the nation.” A few politicians outside the committee have raised concerns about the fundamental threat to privacy. One of the obstacles in the way of the Islamic parties is President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s power of veto. But with provincial elections due this year and a presidential race in 2019, it’s unclear whether Jokowi would risk political capital on protecting a hated and misunderstood minority or being seen as soft on morality issues. “The Islamic parties are really using this issue as their marketing going into the political years, this year and next year,” said Bivitri Susanti, a constitutional law expert who helped establish the Indonesian Center of Law and Policy Studies. “The only thing we can do is to push the government, the president, to stop this,” she said. “Because if we see how the political parties, both the secular ones and the Islamic ones discuss this, I think this draft law will be passed as it is now.” Islamic parties make up four of the 10 factions in Indonesia’s Parliament and due to the popular vote threshold being raised to 4 percent, are at risk of losing their seats in Parliament next year if they can’t rouse their bases. They have typically commanded far less votes than secular parties, but their concerns resonate with a broad cross-section of Indonesians. Hard-line Muslim groups considered fringe a decade ago, such as the Islamic Defenders Front, have moved into the mainstream and shook Jokowi’s government last year with a mass movement against the minority Christian governor of Jakarta, who was subsequently imprisoned for two years for blasphemy. Conservative groups such as the Family Love Alliance believe Indonesia is being overwhelmed by immoral behavior such as sex between unmarried young couples, and in December nearly succeeding in convincing Indonesia’s Constitutional Court to outlaw gay sex and sex outside marriage. Moderate groups, meanwhile, have struggled to muster their forces. While many speak out online, that has little impact compared with the ability of Islamic groups to summon tens of thousands for mass protests. The Islamic parties’ message is perhaps at its most politically potent when aimed at Indonesia’s besieged LGBT minority, which for the past two years has been the target of an escalating campaign of raids, arrests, hateful rhetoric from government officials and vigilante attacks. Police in the conservative province of Aceh, which practices Shariah law, over the weekend rounded up 12 transgender people who worked in hair salons and publicly humiliated them by forcing them into men’s clothing and cutting their hair. Susanti and other legal experts said enforcement would be a huge and impossible burden on police and encourage vigilante acts from self-appointed “guardians of morality,” undermining an already fragile rule of law in Indonesia. She said people who practice religions not recognized by the state could also be criminalized because their marriages aren’t recognized. “The president should say no to this law,” Susanti said. “But looking at how Jokowi is handling issues related to Islam I think he wouldn’t do that.” [Associated Press February 2, 2018] oBike looking to change the way Indonesians commute Homegrown startup oBike announced on Wednesday (Jan 31) that it has launched the service in Indonesia, becoming the first dockless bicycle-sharing platform to enter the market in South-east Asia’s largest economy. oBike is currently available in Bandung and parts of Bali, including Kuta, Legian and Seminyak. It will soon be made available in other major Indonesian cities. For the launch, oBike partnered with various agencies such as the Bandung city government’s transport department, IHGMA (Hotels Association in Bandung) and EcoTransport - a non-government organisation based in Bandung that encourages people to use eco-friendly modes of transportation. Country Manager of oBike Indonesia William T said that the bicycle-sharing solution would give Balinese and Bandung residents “an alternative mode to commute from home to work, school, and public transport stations”, as well as give tourists and residents a “fun bike ride”. “We developed oBike to provide a sustainable and convenient short-distance commuting solution that will save people time and money, while in the same time, embracing healthier lifestyle and supporting (the) government’s policy to reduce carbon emission,” he said. The use of oBike is priced at 4,000 rupiah (S$0.39) for every 30-minute block. In conjunction with the launch, every new user in Indonesia will get three free rides with oBike. In Singapore, oBike costs S$0.50 for 15 minutes of use. But the pricing can vary depending on promotions. Responding to TODAY’s queries about the challenges faced, given that Indonesians commute mostly by motorbikes, the country manager said: “oBike’s service will complement the current transportation network in Indonesia by improving the way Indonesians commute and providing a sustainable and flexible option to help ease traffic woes.” He noted that Jakarta has been listed as the 22nd most congested city in the world. “By having more people switch over to oBikes, we’ll be effectively contributing to the development of a car-lite and environmentally-conscious city,” he added. Indonesia, one of the world’s biggest carbon polluters, has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions growth by at least 29 per cent by 2030. One of the key priorities for oBike in Indonesia include education for commuters on bike-sharing, so that the company can eventually “build a sustainable public transportation network” in the cities it enters, Mr William said, adding that this would include working closely with local government bodies and the authorities. He said that “these conversations and education may take some time”, but the company is committed to it as part of a long-term strategy. oBike has deployed 14,000 bikes in Singapore. The service is available in over 70 cities in 20 countries, including Australia, Germany, Malaysia, South Korea and the United Kingdom. [Today January 31, 2018] Eight Taiwanese fraud suspects remain detained in Indonesia Eight Taiwanese suspects in a cross-border fraud ring recently busted by the Indonesian authorities remained detained on the island of Bali Friday, while 55 other Chinese ring members were returned to China that same day, Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reported. According to Indonesian police, the eight Taiwanese suspects are members of a telecom fraud ring composed of 55 Chinese, eight Taiwanese, four Indonesians and one Malaysian, who were tracked down by Indonesian law enforcement officials at four locations in Bali January 11 and accused of swindling money out of people in Taiwan and China. The Taiwanese suspects are being held at a detention centre in Bali rather than being sent to China along with the 55 Chinese suspects, Bali immigration chief Ari Budijanto told CNA over the phone. According to Ari, the 55 Chinese have been blacklisted by Indonesia and deported to Tianjin in China. Taiwan’s representative office in Jakarta was reported to be in talks with the Indonesian authorities, in the hope that the eight men can be sent back to Taiwan. It will not be the first time that Indonesia has deported Taiwanese suspects to Taiwan rather than to China. In August last year, four Taiwanese telecom fraud suspects were deported to Taiwan by Indonesia on charges of breaking the country’s immigration laws. They were among a total of 143 suspects from Taiwan and China nabbed by Indonesian police in separate raids in Jakarta, Surabaya, Badan and Bali earlier that same year. Bali tourism 90 percent ‘recovered’ since volcanic eruption disruption: Tourism Minister The condition of tourism in Bali has recovered 90 percent of where it was before Mount Agung started rumbling, erupting, and disrupting the island’s biggest money-making industry in late 2017, according to Indonesia’s tourism minister. “It’s at 90 percent recovery,” minister Arief Yahya told Tempo on Tuesday in Jakarta. The so-called recovery is based on the number of daily visits to the resort island from foreign tourists. “Now it’s 14,000 per day, normally was 15,000,” he said. For those of you following along at home, that’s actually closer to 93 percent, but we all get what he means. Mount Agung, which hadn’t erupted since 1963, stirred back to life in September 2017. After months of close monitoring of fears of an explosive eruption, the volcano started erupting on a small scale in November 2017, forcing the airport to shut down for two and a half days when ash blew into the flight path. More recently, the volcano erupted four consecutive times on Jan. 23. But the country’s volcanology center insists the island is safe beyond the volcano’s designated six kilometer exclusion zone and tourists seem to be trickling back in. Helping these numbers is that other countries have revoked travel advisories about Bali since the volcano has relatively quieted down, according to Yahya. The minister has even made personal visits to promote Bali as safe, to countries supplying significant tourism numbers to Bali, such as China. “At the end of the year, it was just China that wasn’t satisfied (to come to Bali),” Yahya explained. Visits from Chinese tourists to Bali fell to near zero when the Middle Kingdom issue a travel warning, but the fear of traveling to Bali no longer apparently persists. “But now foreign tourists from China are willing to come. Today there is a new flight from China to Bali with as many as 250 passengers,” said Yahya. The Tourism Ministry estimates that at least 15,000 Chinese will travel to Bali to celebrate the Chinese New Year this February. [Coconuts Bali January 6, 2018] Airport ground handler caught illegally shipping Rp.3.68 billion in larval lobsters Airport security at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport managed to thwart the shipment a massive quantity of larval lobster on Friday. February 2, 2018. As reported by Balipost.com, Airport Security discovered 15,998 larval lobsters that were destined for illegal export to Hong Kong. Police have taken into custody two individuals and evidence that includes 27 plastic bags containing 13,250 larval lobsters, 7 bags containing 2,478 “mutiara” larval lobsters, 2 cooling bottles and 2 hand phones. According to the general manager of the Bali Airport, Yanus Suprayogi, the attempt to smuggle the lobsters was done by a ground handler working at the airport. With the ground handler’s arrest, the Airport Authority permanently confiscated his security clearance badge. Yanus said the two men intended to ship the undocumented larval lobsters that originated in Lombok to Vietnam via Singapore. The commercial value of the larval lobsters is estimated by custom’s authorities at Rp. 3.68 billion. [www.balidiscovery.com February 4, 2018] Bali police capture most-wanted fugitives of Moldova, China Two fugitives, originating from Russia and China, who were long hunted by Moldovan and Chinese police, have been detained by Bali Police on separate raids, an official stated during a press conference here on Wednesday. The two fugitives reportedly were part of the Interpol`s most-wanted lists. “The first suspect was a Russian national named Balmus Petru, and the second suspect named Xiao Xiaofei was from China. The two fugitives have allegedly committed fraud (in Russia and China),” Police Superintendent (AKBP) Sugeng Sudarso, Deputy of General Crimes Investigation Department stated at Bali Police Headquarter on Wednesday. Following a request by Moldovan and Chinese governments, through the Indonesian Interpol, the Bali Police went straight to raid the fugitives, who reportedly were in the island for vacation. According to Sudarso, the police are still awaiting the extradition requests filed by the Moldovan and Chinese governments. Petru was detained last Monday (Jan 16) in Bali. The Russian national had entered Indonesia as a tourist. According to the police, Petru had committed a fraud in Moldova, the deputy noted. Meanwhile, Xiaofei was captured on Sunday (Jan 21) at 1 a.m. local time in Kuta, Badung District. Xiao was suspected to have defrauded cash worth US$21.5, or Rp280 billion. He marketed a phony financial product, which was claimed to generate 6-12 percent interest per year. Xiao escaped from Macau last December and entered Indonesia through Bali on Jan 18, 2018. The Bali Police had been monitoring Xiao`s activity during his stay for two days, before the raid. On Thursday (Jan 25) at 1 a.m. local time, Bali Police will return Xiao to the Chinese Police at Ngurah Rai International Airport. [Antara January 31, 2018]

Sous Vide Coming to Candi! I despair at the standard Bali International menu which I often refer to as a ‘tourist’ one, even though I know how necessary it is. Most tourists, whilst they may stray once or twice, prefer food just like home. Of course what is served in many local restaurants may sound like ‘at home’ but not resemble it in looks or taste, and that is the saddest part. However the Watergarden Kafe at Candi Dasa provides a nice balance and a big thanks to the thoughtful management who were virtually the first in Bali to signify all nut-free and gluten-free items in their menu, a constant problem for Bali tourists with dietary problems. As of today only a handful of restaurants in the south bother to conform by supplying this essential requirement! Now Watergarden are also adding a selection of dishes prepared with the ‘sous vide’ cooking method to their menu. The equipment has arrived from Europe and the kitchen staff is being trained in its use by a leading international chef. Sous Vide [French for ‘under vacuum’] is a revolutionary cooking method in which food is vacuum-sealed in a plastic pouch and then placed in a water bath or steam environment for longer than normal cooking times (usually 1 to 7 hours, up to 48 or more in some cases) at an accurately regulated temperature. The temperature is much lower than normally used for cooking, typically around 55 to 60 °C (131 to 140 °F) for meat, higher for vegetables. The intent is to cook the item evenly, ensuring that the inside is properly cooked without overcooking the outside, and to retain moisture. This sous vide process was introduced to Bali by Chris Salans at Mozaic many years ago, soon followed by a number of other fine dining restaurants in the south. Now, also to be available at Candi’s Kafe Watergarden. That new part of the menu was not quite ready when I last dined there but should be available from early March. I often order the simplest dishes when visiting restaurants, items found on many other menus. For me that is where the kitchen’s attention to detail is best examined. The appetisers at Wategarden set the scene for a pleasant meal. The Asian collection includes Thai Fish Cakes, they are not the Thai Tod Man Pla with their rubbery consistency but rather patties of minced fish nicely spiced. The accompanying sweet ginger and cucumber relish is perfect and very Thai. The Samosas are triangles of a very light pastry wrapped around curried vegetables and eggplant caviar, the flavour a trace of Madras, served with guacamole [different, but tastes
good]. To this list add the Indonesian favourite of Prekedel Jagung [spicy corn fritters]. For the International set there are Italian Bruschettas [fresh tomato, basil, garlic, olive oil dressing] and from the USA, Potato Skins [with 2 dips, a cocktail sauce and one of garlic mayonnaise]. Soups can be Indonesian, Soto Madura, bihun noodles, hard-boiled egg, chilli and vegetables in a rich chicken soup, or a selection of healthy vegetarian ones; tomato [with crisp garlic bread], cauliflower [veloute with sesame seeds] or pumpkin [toasted seeds, crème fraiche, feta cheese, spring onion, virgin olive oil & thyme bread]. I love snacking and there a few here which I will find it difficult not to re-try. What can be easier than the standard Fish and Chips, or the more exotic Potato Royale [mashed potato with bacon, melted cheese, jalapeno pepper, accompanied with a black pepper béarnaise sauce]. For the homesick Aussie there are real Meat Pies; beef, chicken or vegetarian. There is a Cheese & Onion Quiche served with a red pepper sauce and green salad as well as the essential Cheese Burger, etc. For the Vegetarian [there are many options throughout the menu] a Chickpea Burger with a bit of taste [coriander and garlic] which is surprisingly good and a Vegetarian Focaccia [grilled eggplant, roasted bell peppers, onion, sun dried tomatoes and mozzarella on toasted rosemary focaccia] From the pizza oven, thin and crispy pizzas with a variety of toppings.
soya bean curd in a spicy peanut sauce with lontong [rice steamed in a piece of banana leaf]. At dessert time it is hard to go past the excellent Apple Crumble, topped with vanilla ice cream compote of blueberries or their Tiramisu topped with orange cardamom cream. For those special dinners there is a full Rijstaffel or the classic Balinese Duck or Chicken Betutu, both for two persons and due to the extended preparation time must be order a day in advance. Candi Dasa is really growing up! To imagine this variety of cuisine at this standard and low price being available in Candi Dasa says it all.

Asian mains include a Laksa from Sumatra [seafood poached in coconut milk and spice paste with baby corn, bok choy, snow peas, bean sprouts, oyster mushrooms, glass noodles, coriander & red finger chili] very hot and sour, the way it should be! From India a Tikka Masala, chicken fillet, chili, tomato puree, curry masala with yoghurt. There are also a few International dishes, Fricassee of MahiMahi. Sweet & Sour Pork Chinese style, an unusual Leg of Lamb Confit where the meat is stripped from the leg and rolled, cooked in its own juice with rosemary and tomato. Quality lamb dishes are quite rare in Bali, this one is special. A Fillet Mignon is a welcome blast from the past, tenderloin fillet of beef wrapped in bacon and grilled [the bacon keeps the centre moist whilst the outside cooks, the crisp bacon itself an extra bonus]. Pan Fried Prawns [pictured] are a local special, large prawns cooked with diced zucchini, large red chillies and paprika in a prawn sauce reduction. Other local dishes include Sates [chicken and pork] and Udang Panggang, prawns with a bite, grilled with a spice paste of sambal matah. The Vegetarian menu gets a lot of attention at Watergarden as it the owner’s personal choice of dining. I like the 3 Bean Chilli dish [for those who want a bit of spice with their veggies] black and kidney beans with chickpeas are served in a thick chilli tomato sauce. Tahu Gunting is dried fried

21 SOME GREAT NEW WAYS TO LOSE MONEY! In the far-off days before the Internet, smartphones and even credit cards, the greatest opportunities to become rich overnight often arrived in the form of hand-written airmail letters carrying exotic postage stamps, usually from West Africa.
names in the address book there is a chance that a good friend somewhere will believe the story and arrange a rapid transfer before the deadline, which was set of course to enable the scammer to collect and run before his scheme was exposed.
Typically, a letter would explain that a close relative in a very important government position had been murdered or killed in a plane crash. Often they would actually name the person so that the death could be corroborated. But invariably the person who came to a tragic end had a massive sum of cash hidden in a bank account that was about to be seized by the government. The only way to extract it would be with the assistance of a highly trusted person outside the country, namely the recipient of the letter who would arrange to transfer it to his or her account. Needless to say, if the money was successfully transferred to the recipient’s account, the sender of the letter would ask the highly trusted person to remit it back to the sender but retain say a few million dollars for the ‘inconvenience’.
Scammers are not just evil elements operating from cities in Africa, Eastern Europe or Asia. And victims are not just individuals unfamiliar with the ways of the world. Soon after the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 a British solicitor set up a fund that robbed investors of over 100 million pounds. Based on the credibility and reputation of the British legal profession the fund was readily accepted by the financial services industry and approved by all the major international life companies. With the assistance of other dishonest legal practitioners nearly all the money invested was misappropriated. Seven British solicitors were struck off for their part in the fraud.
The tale of course was false yet many people fell for it. I recall that police authorities at the time estimated that one person in 100 took the ‘bait’. So no wonder the letters kept coming. I was quite happy to receive the letters as I would keep the stamps, but those that took the message seriously (and of course kept it secret at the time as they had been told it was highly confidential) found that they first had to part with some money to ‘facilitate’ the transaction. More demands followed until the victim finally realised it was a scam. Scammers latch on quickly to new technology A whole generation later the letters keep coming, and from a wider range of sources, but now they come by e-mail so there are no exotic stamps to collect. Most servers are able to filter such messages into the junk mailbox, but with thousands of newcomers to the Internet around the world every day there will always be a potential pool of victims. On a local note, in recent years you have probably received text messages telling you that you have won a sum of money or a prize, even though you never entered any competition or prize draw. This is not in the league of the international scammers but being offered an amount of money or new car is sufficiently attractive to persuade people to part with ‘administration’ fees. ‘Phishing’ is the term for another popular scam where you receive e-mails from what appears to be a legitimate financial institution such as a bank and which requests, sometimes via a link to a fake website, personal information and even passwords for urgent ‘security’ reasons. These scams can usually be spotted by looking at the sender’s e-mail address. On the surface it looks like the real thing but it may have just a one letter difference which means your reply is going to the scammer and not the legitimate bank. Anyone unwise enough to provide confidential information risks having their accounts emptied or their identity stolen. Another very common scam is an e-mail from what appears to be a regular e-mail provider such as Yahoo asking you to confirm your user name and password, failing which your account will be blocked. The victims of this scam can actually be the people in the person’s address book, all of whom are now available to the scammer. I have heard of several cases similar to the following which I experienced myself: One day I received an e-mail from a client saying she was in an African city, had lost her passport and credit cards and that the manager of the hotel was about to have her arrested unless funds were urgently remitted to a Western Union office within the next two hours. I noted that the e-mail address, although it bore her name, was slightly different from the normal one she used. I called her office and was relieved to find that she was there, and not in an African city! But the scammer had done his homework and by reading all her e-mails was able to deduce her job and travel patterns, thus ensuring the story sounded credible. Out of all the

And now a new opportunity for scammers My last article related to cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and I suggested caution on their use. Ironically, during the few days between my submitting the article and its publication the government ruled that use of a cryptocurrency contravened the law as the Rupiah is the only recognised currency for transactions within Indonesia. There were reports that Bitcoin was being widely used in Bali, albeit mainly by foreigners. So now it is quite clear that it is outlawed in Indonesia as well as several other countries. But this has not killed the enthusiasm for the currency elsewhere. As I mentioned last month, Bitcoins are created by ‘mining’ them on computers. The reward for ‘miners’ is that they can share in the lucrative ability to charge transaction fees as they become effectively the ‘bankers’ of the system. But successfully ‘mining’ the coins requires a huge amount of computing power and hence a lot of money to cover the amount of electricity needed. Hence we are now seeing advertisements on the Internet offering to pay people for use of their computers during the hours of non-use. I am not saying this is a scam but one needs to question what impact the ‘mining’ will have on the computer and the security of personal data.
: (62) 87761190258 E: info@indo-ned.com C/BT/G-6 Dec. 17
C/BT/I-14 Feb 18
Even more interesting are the advertisements appearing on the Internet inviting investors to support ‘mining’ ventures. One ad I saw offered a quick return on investment of 200%. On pressing various buttons I saw that the company’s operation was in Eastern Europe and that it had contact addresses in Russia and China. Genuine opportunity or a quick way to lose money? I don’t plan to find out. While ‘blockchain’ technology is gaining the interest of larger players there are clearly many potential pitfalls for the unwary. At the end of the day, the old formula still holds: the higher the expected return, the higher the risk. Time is another factor. Stocks and property are better investments than cash in the bank, but only for sure in the long term. Get-rich-quick schemes often do work – but only for the promoters, not the investors!

TURNING BACK THE HANDS OF TIME There comes a point in a woman’s life (or a man) when she looks in the mirror and the wrinkles and sagging skin are staring back at her. What happened to my youthful face? Despite all the facial treatments she’s done, which have helped to a certain degree, they were all temporary. Especially the neck and jaw line. The skin on the neck is very thin and loses its collagen elasticity the earliest on the face. Having good genes does help but unless you avoid being in the sun the inevitable is going to happen. Crow’s feet appear around the eyes. The upper eyelids begin to droop. Or weekend-size bags hover under your eyes. A double chin shows up out of nowhere. Who is this person in the mirror? It’s time to take serious action to restore your face to a younger version of you. The ultimate remedy is a surgical facelift. The thought sounds scary especially since we’ve all seen photos of celebrities who have undergone a drastic and sometimes botched job. Looking worse than they did before the knife. Cosmetic surgery can be risky. However, finding a reputable surgeon can take ten years or more off your face and restore your former glory or in some cases make you look even better than you did ten years ago. I’ve known Dr. Suryahadi for a few years and have met a few of his former patients. All of them praised Dr. Surya’s expert craftsmanship. He’s Balinese and studied in Germany and Holland for eight years and has over twenty years of experience. Plus he’s very charming and friendly, instilling trust. I was ready to take the plunge and go for it. First I made an appointment for a consultation with a list of questions. He sat me in front of a large mirror, standing behind me and gently pulled my skin up along my jaw line. Immediate transformation. Yes, that’s what I wanted to look like. He explained that my upper face was still in good condition so I didn’t need any surgery there, just the neck and jawline were the obvious places that needed rescuing. What age is best to do a facelift? He explained that a person in their forties will reap the greatest results which will last up to twenty years. In your fifties or sixties the result will still be significant, taking ten years off your face which will last at least ten years. What do I need to do to prepare for surgery? Stop drinking alcohol and smoking at least three days prior to surgery and stop taking all vitamins and supplements. Anything that will thin the blood should be avoided to prevent bleeding. Will I be sleeping during the procedure? Dr. Surya uses a local anesthetic and a sedative plus a pain killer. “You’re in a twilight state” he explains. “Not really sleeping but dreamy.” Using a local anesthetic doesn’t require an anesthesiologist and the drug has far less negative effects on your body. Can you feel anything during the surgery? Just the injection for the anesthetic then nothing. How long will the surgery take? It takes two to six hours, depending on the extent of the work being performed. For a neck lift it takes about two hours. A full facelift three hours or more. For a person who had Aptos threads inserted under the skin previously, it makes things more difficult. The doctor needs to remove the threads, which can cause difficulties and perhaps requiring him to cut into the muscles, which causes more bleeding and possible numbing of the tissue for a few weeks. How will I look immediately after the surgery? Your face will be tightly bandaged. Wrap a scarf around your head to hide the bandages then you can go home or back to
your hotel to become a recluse. For the next four days you return to the clinic to have the bandages changed and clean the wounds. You can expect some bruising and swelling, especially around the eyes if work has been done in this area. What should I do during the week following surgery? Rest. Avoid exercise for two weeks or more to prevent bleeding. Stay home, read books, watch movies and sleep. You’ll have painkillers, antibiotics and sleeping tablets to keep you comfortable. You’ll need to sleep face up for the first days until the bandage comes off. On the fourth day following surgery you can remove the bandage and wash your hair before going to the clinic. The doctor will clean the wounds and remove stitches from in front of the ears and under the chin, applying small strip bandages over the scars. You have to keep the rest of the stitches clean and dry. The remaining stitches will remain for at least another week or two depending on the healing process. There’s many stitches inside which will dissolve on their own. The nurses are on call 24 hours a day in case you have an emergency or bleeding.

C/NV/I-30 August 17
What happens on the day of surgery? After a shower and hair washing I had breakfast and came to the clinic in the morning wearing casual clothes and no make-up and brought a scarf. Two of my friends came to show support as I was quite nervous and a little scared. After arrival I had to fill out a consent form and make payment. Then I was given a sedative tablet and one for pain. The doctor swept into the room with a smile and happy greeting. The nurses escorted me to a locker room to change into a gown and robe and locked my belongings in a locker. After entering the operating room I was settled onto a bed under lights. One of the nurses gently inserted a needle into a vein on top of my hand and attached a small hose for the sedative. Then she tied my hair up on top of my head.
C/He/G-3 Jan. 18
Dr. Surya entered with a mask over his face and asked if I was ready. The next two hours I remember little and felt a little dozy when I sat up and carefully went to the locker room to change. One of the nurses helped wrap a scarf around my head then handed me 3 small bags of medication and instructions on usage. Then I went home to become a recluse. The next four days I stayed home only going to the clinic to have the bandage changed and back home again. Now two months later the swelling and bruising is gone as well as my double chin. The few friends who “knew”, told me I looked great and younger. It was worth it. Sara Aesthetics Jl. Nakula #9. Seminyak info@saraklinik.com, saraklinik@yahoo.com www.saraklinik.com

26 What’s your favorite earworm? by Ines Wynn Have you been plagued by that endless repetitive tune that seemingly pops out of the blue and spontaneously plays in your head over and over and over again? Join the crowd. Almost all people experience those mind teasers called earworms. They’re also called brain worm, brain itch, stuck song or sticky music. Normally they don’t last very long, usually only 15 to 30 seconds but that’s enough to make them very annoying or distracting, especially when it is a song you don’t particularly like. On some occasions it’s not uncommon for a song to be stuck in your head for several days and even haunt your dreams. Earworms are most often music because music is a multisensory stimulus that involves emotional and personal connotations. They are often songs with upbeat, catchy tunes or jingles so it is no wonder the ad men pounced on that phenomenon. A lot of research has been done on those invasive parasites but researchers aren’t altogether sure why some songs are more likely to get stuck in your head as opposed to other, equally catchy tunes. What they do know is that earworms are experienced by women more often than men, by musicians and people who are neurotic, tired or under stress. Women report them to be more irksome. They also seem to be very individual. The condition can become extreme for some people who are so plagued by these quirky brain doodles that it negatively affects their wellbeing. In that case it is called endomusia, an obsessive condition in which the intensity of earworms is more pronounced and the effects can be debilitating in people suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), sometimes causing erratic behaviours and severe insomnia. Eminent scientists at Dartmouth College and the University of Cincinnati have studied the earworm phenomenon and are suggesting that the earworm feeds off of the memory system of the left primary auditory cortex, an area of the brain responsible for hearing. Psychologically, earworms are a ‘cognitive itch’: the brain automatically itches back, resulting in a vicious loop. Where do these earworms come from? Something in your current environment may trigger an earworm, like a word on a billboard, a package, an advertisement that reminds you of the lyrics of a song or seeing a friend and remembering the last karaoke song he belted out. Earworms can also be triggered by emotions, associations, or simply by listening to a melody you recently heard or one you hear often like a theme song of a series you are watching like the haunting, mesmerising The Skye Boat song of Outlander. Some people report the buggers appear when they are under stress. And yes, they can also come from a vivid dream featuring a particular song or musical segment.

My own last few earworms bear out that they are indeed very individual. I happened to catch a YouTube video of a mass dance recorded in a shopping mall in Salzburg, Austria to the tune of Do-Re-Mi from the famous musical The Sound of Music. It’s a catchy tune of course so bingo, it hung in my ears for days. Another YouTube video featured Ravel’s Boléro ballet choreographed by Maurice Béjart with Maya Plisetskaya as the principal dancer. The repetitious cadence of the notes is a natural for an earworm.

Earworms in literature, film and real life. Earworms have been creative fodder for a number of writers and film directors. Some great stories have been written around a pernicious earworm like Mark Twain’s A Literary Nightmare and Punch, Brother, Punch. Arthur C. Clarke’s 1957 science fiction short story The Ultimate Melody and Joe Simpson’s 1988 book Touching the Void are other examples. Films have mined this theme as well, usually featuring it as a control tool to drive someone insane or mentally unhinged sometimes by artificially planting an earworm. Mrs. Harris, the film about the murder of the Scarsdale diet doctor circles around the theme as the accused claimed she was obsessed by the song Blame it on Mame that pursued her day and night. Even SpongeBob SquarePants is not immune. In a 2010 episode entitled Ear Worm SpongeBob gets a song stuck in his head called Musical Doodle. Some murderers in real life have confessed to be driven to torture and kill by a relentless earworm. Usually they ‘hear voices’ which command them to commit gruesome deeds. Which answers the question that earworms are not necessarily musical in nature. How to get rid of it when it’s overstaying its welcome. When an unwelcome tune gets stuck in your head, you can ty out some of these random cures: • Listen to another song or music or sing another song yourself. • Divert your attention by getting mentally engrossed in another. activity that requires concentration like a word puzzle or Sudoku. • Call a friend or family member to chat. • Chew gum. Apparently scientists have discovered that chewing gum could help by ‘blocking the sub-vocal rehearsal component of auditory short-term or “working” memory associated with generating and manipulating auditory and musical images.’ And if these don’t help, don’t fret. You already know that eventually that pesky earworm will go away. Are there any functional uses for earworms? Some enterprising companies are capitalizing on the subliminal characteristics of earworms by marketing services like language courses that rely on auditory input. One example is Earworms MBT (Musical Brain Trainer). Their application teaches you a foreign language by using music integration and rhythmic repetition in a series of audio lessons. This language learning technique starts with key phrases which are then set to music, and repeated a few times. The phrases and tunes are designed to become embedded in the auditory cortex of the brain, in the same way as that song that you cannot get out of your mind.

Toraja by Nigel Barley In 1985, Dr. Nigel Barley, then senior anthropologist at The British Museum, taught himself Indonesian and set off for the relatively unknown island of Sulawesi where he hoped to find unsullied cultures and unspoilt natives to study. Barley soon found plenty to wonder at and admire among the Toraja people, a remote hill tribe whose culture features headhunting, transvestite priests and gory buffalo sacrifices in funerals. First published in 1988 as Not a Hazardous Sport, even thirty years after the events occurred Sulawesi remains a beautiful and mountainous island with multi-ethnicities, languages and religions. The book still gives an uncannily accurate view of life in Toraja through a series of vignettes observed while out walking, sitting in a house parlor, from a roadside cafe or from the sidelines of a ceremonial field. Though an urban sophisticate, the author travels with a cheerful and mischievous sense of humor aboard crowded rattletrap old trucks and buses over muddy pock-marked roads. One daunting 5-day journey takes him from Mamasa up into the mountains on a small horse, a harrowing ascent through forests bereft of human settlement until he is finally taken in by a farmer. Everywhere he turns his gaze, like a macro lens on a camera, he discerns texture, nuance and finely wrought detail that few other travelers are inclined to see. In writing that is often rueful and selfdeprecating, Barley gives a blistering account of his Aeroflot flight to Asia, a vivid portrait of Singapore’s Bugis Street, his chaotic reception at Jakarta’s new airport and foreboding approach to the squalor of the giant city, his first halting attempts at using Indonesian and an elephant-style bath in a bak mandi, visceral descriptions of the packed odiferous confines of a six-to-a-cabin Pelni passenger ship, of appallingly dirty, sleazy and ill-governed coastal towns, a Keystone cops retelling of an Independence Day parade, of joyful morning youth choirs emanating from churches, the downpours, braying of livestock and raucous, ritual filled rhythmic chants of death ceremonies amidst startling scenes of buffalo slaughter. In between anecdotes he holds forth on Indonesian sleeping and eating habits and delivers diatribes against tourists and ethnographers. Barley visited Torajaland at a time when farmers still pounded rice in wooden troughs and blacksmith shops echoed with the clamor of iron forged on bellows-fanned fires. He gushes about the magnificent countryside, witnesses bags of bones hauled up cliff faces for burial in caves, describes the brutal blood sports of cock- and bull fighting, the visual and auditory intensity of a village coming to life in the morning, the process of making of palm wine and exquisite ikat glowing with natural dyes. It’s not until the last chapter that we arrive at the book’s raison d’être. The author arranges for the passage of four Torajan woodcarvers to England to construct a traditional rice barn in London’s British Museum where a space is converted into a convincing building site, knee-deep in wood chips, scattered tools and teapots. The installation was a two-year project for which Barley had to overcome a cumbersome bureaucracy in order to ship tools and materials, as well as craftsmen with spears, swords and a priestly outfit aboard the aircraft. Three quarters of the book leading up to this culminating event provides the necessary background and context. Though always a speculative enterprise, live ethnographic exhibitions are not new. Congolese pygmies, native American Indians, a family of Inuit and savage Filipinos eating dogs have all been chief attractions at natural history museums in the past. In the case of the Torajan woodcarvers, these members of a faraway culture were not performing in a demeaning and racist way but fostering a skill under threat. Barley describes how Nenek, the 70-year-old team master, carved a beam with delicate confident curves, gliding over the black surface of the
wood with the elegance of an ice skater. The old man’s feet were as essential as his hands for gripping and steadying the wood that is being carved. The rice granary was in essence a miniature cultural representation of Torajaland, providing greater entertainment and instruction than dead objects behind glass cases. In the end, the exhibit made an important contribution by documenting and demonstrating the carpentry techniques used in the entire construction process, enabling researchers to collect information that would be difficult to acquire in the field. Because they were so honored and their exhibit so well received, the carvers’ time in London made them feel proud to be Torajan. It’s impossible to predict what people from a developing country will find remarkable in the West. Although they never got to grips with turning off bathroom taps, the quartet of carvers soon discovered the joys of TV. Their favorite subjects were war, followed by sex, “pornographic” love scenes and advertisements featuring musical jingles. Not particularly impressed with the Houses of Parliament or St. Paul’s Cathedral, the sight of gorillas, orangutan and giraffes at the London Zoo terrified and fascinated them, as did the great variety of dogs on leashes walking along city streets.
C/E/G-14 Feb. 18
Eight pages of photographs, which are indispensable to the book’s appreciation, illustrate all the icons of this mountain people’s culture and society – ceremonies, landscapes, architecture, attire, mortuary rituals, village commerce, arts and crafts. Three pages of black & white photos document the stages of rice barn construction. Barley is so good at explaining, he seldom uses Indonesian or local terms, obviating the need for a glossary. Nigel Barley is the author of twenty books. It was in capacity as a researcher in the Department of Ethnography at the British Museum that he first travelled to S.E. Asia. After forays into Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan and Burma, he settled on Indonesia as his principal research interest, working on the history and contemporary culture of the archipelago since 2003. But Toraja is not a dry anthropologist’s monograph. In funny, clever and finely crafted prose, Barley infuses his observations with an enthusiasm not typical of the strict, clinical perspective of an anthropologist. He refrains from romanticizing Torajan culture, but gives this indigenous hill tribe their humanity, producing an insightful and informative portrait of a unique ethnic group in a little-known corner of the world.
C/E/I-31 Jan 18
Toraja is a travelogue that records the writer’s first hand experiences. Thus, the book holds a special place among Barley’s imagined works of historical fiction like Island of Demons and The Devil’s Garden that deal more in fantasy. Toraja is thoroughly entertaining, full of memorably eccentric characters, and Barley demonstrates a penetrating understanding of the Indonesian character. The four pages describing the sights that astonished, puzzled and delighted the Torajan visitors in London, and their confused cross-cultural reactions to Westerners and Western ideas, are alone worth the price of the book. This is storytelling at its best.

Say What?

time we’re actually physically together, I’m struggling with whether I’m in a relationship at all - or just a weird digital friendship. Any advice or you may be able to offer is appreciated.
Question: You’re probably going to read this and think that it’s a terrible idea because having an affair is bad. But this married woman and I have been friends for a couple of years, and she recently told me that she and her husband have an open relationship, and that she would be open to starting something with me. This is crazy, right? People who are married don’t just get to be with other people and have it be cool, right? This feels totally weird and crazy, but on the other hand, I like her; so maybe I should just get over myself and go for it. I don’t know. What do you think?
I would, want to make sure that everyone involved is in on the loop of who’s doing what with whom.
Dr. ZZ: Open relationships are real although somewhat taboo. As many as 15% of committed couples reportedly engage in them and make them work for both their own personal needs and for the health of the relationships. If you decide that an open relationship is not for you, and you can’t be involved with someone “cheating” on their spouse (it’s not cheating), then by all means, do not push against your own instincts. Different strokes for different folks!
Question: I’m in my late 20s and I’m dating a woman who is amazing. We are compatible in so many ways - except for one. She’s remarkably busy. Part of this comes from the fact that she’s involved in a lot of after-work activities (sports, clubs, etc.) and she’s also been somewhat ill (with the schedule of all her activities seeming to run her into the ground). While at the start of the relationship we were seeing each other 2-3 times a week, lately it’s dwindled down to once every other week. Although we stay in pretty close contact through constant texting, emailing and the Internet, the person-to-person time just hasn’t been there.
The fact is, however, that no successful open relationship is 100% open. That would be relationship anarchy and would result in self-destruction. All open relationships have “rules” (probably not the most accurate descriptor of the guidelines shared by the primary partners, but every open relationship has them.) Since almost all open relationships are slightly different from one another, you may want to know a bit about the rules involved before you decide to play. For starters, neither person is usually allowed to “fall in love” with someone else they date. If one partner sleeps with another person, it is generally supposed to be a temporary fling without emotional attachment. If it were me, I would most likely want to meet the husband as well. This isn’t always possible as some couples have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” rule about their non-monagamous dalliances, a rule that feels like a contradiction in terms in an “open” relationship. For the sake of honesty and integrity, however,
C/E/I-14 Feb 18
Moreover, in any relationship, it’s your responsibility - and an extremely important one - to insure your own and your partners’ sexual health. So you can get to be with other people and have it be cool in an open relationship, but “having it be cool” comes with its own set of caveats. Even if there’s only one rule, it has to be safe sex. Get over yourself if you care to, and be sure to take care of yourself.
I really like this woman, but I’m at a loss for what to do or say to her at this point. We’re 4 months into being exclusive, and some of her activities pre-date our relationship, but she’s added others on top as well. I don’t consider myself to be generally needy in relationships, but given the amount of
Dr. ZZ: The least controlling way to go about changing someone’s behavior is to approach them with honesty. You need to have a talk, to ask her a few questions, and to offer some specific, concrete suggestions for how the two of you can spend more time together. For instance: Is her schedule always like this, or did you just happened to meet at an unusually busy time? Is she happy with how often you hang out, and with how packed her schedule is? Perhaps she would be willing to set aside one day a week just for the two of you to spend time together. But you have to put it out there, to risk appearing needy, and to get down to business (“Listen, I really like you, and I want you to be happy and engaged in stuff you love to do, but I want to see more of you. Can we work something out?”) Say all that, then listen carefully to her response. You’re not crazy, wrong or too needy for wanting to see her more and for expressing it. Your lust and affection are viable. She may in fact be a bit over-scheduled and trying to figure out how to balance everything while also working you into the schedule. Or she may be totally okay with your current level of contact, in which case, you probably need a new girlfriend. Get in there, and talk to each other about it; so that you can find out now, before another 4 months get lost in the whirlwind. If your needs aren’t being met, and if it doesn’t appear as if she is willing to meet them at this time, then bail before you get more invested.
Dr. ZZ has a Ph.D. in Counseling and a doctorate in Natural Healing. Drawing on a background of over thirty years as a professional therapist, she offers self-help in the areas health, relationship and personal growth. Connecting the Digital Dots in Bali When I first started going back and forth between Bali and Australia, one’s own immediate circle of ex-pat and local friends was crucial in giving you advice about good visa agents, dodgy plumbers, local rip-off schemes and businesses that cheated you and every manner of dodgy or reliable person or company. However, in those days, and that’s only ten years ago, all this advice came via wordof-mouth. The other big drawback to this form of collective wisdom and recommendation was limited to the network’s experience. Step outside this safety zone and you could be ripped off, disappointed or have a hard time finding answers to your questions. Collectively, Bali ex-pats longed for better information channels. As the numbers of foreigners living in Bali increased dramatically, particularly over the last five years, these channels have formed. In this column, I’ll tell you about the most popular, reliable channels to keep informed on everything from new visa regulations, to finding a good electrician, to spreading the word about possibly compromised ATMs to where to buy unusual ingredients. For those of us who are longer-term ex-pats, remember the Singapore visa run request lists? When people heard you were heading to the Lion City, you’d have a long list of requests – I used to cap my requests at about six people – otherwise, you spent your time running around Singapore searching for jars of Vegemite. I have hauled laptops back and forth – two at a time, once -- sourced obscure vitamins, brought back specialty food items, essential oils, the list goes on. Now, thanks to a dramatic increase in goods and services catering to the ex-pat community, and a proliferation of specialized Facebook pages, you can find pretty much everything you need in Bali and have most of your queries answered. Facebook seems to be the go-to social media resource for Bali ex-pats. The Bali Ex-Pat Community Page has 14,038 members, and is a good general starting point and place to ask questions from the basic to the obscure about staying or living in Bali. In addition, smaller enclaves have been setting up their own Facebook pages, which offer better local information and advice exchange for specific communities. There are now Canggu Community (53,000 members), Canggu & Seminyak Community (18,000 members) and Sanur Community (6,102 members) pages. For Ubud, there are Community Ubud (3,605 members) and Ubud Community (69,946 members) pages. In the recent past, all questions about rideshares, buying and selling, or renting houses could also found on the general community pages, but people have now set up special pages for these topics. Pages such as Canggu Community Housing (19,000 members), Sanur Property (2,213 members) and Bali Buy, Swap or Sell (37,960 members) aid with these issues. Ubud, Bali – Housing & Rental (15,485 members), Ubud Houses and Accommodation (1,509 members), Ubud Rentals (15,318 members) and Ubud Long Term Villa Rentals (2,111 members) are all good sites for finding or listing properties for rent in or near Ubud. Ubud has two trade pages: Ubud Buy and Sale (2,600 members) and Buy and Sell in Ubud (6,582 members). For those seeking to share taxis or rent cars together, several pages focus on ridesharing: Ubud Ride Share (1,302 members), Bali Shared Rides (330 members) and the Ubud Sanur Canggu Lovina Ride Share Taxi page ((1,032 members). Digital Nomads, whose numbers seem to be ever increasing in Bali, have their own pages now: check out Bali Digital Nomads (6,805 members), Ubud Digital Nomads (735 members) or Canggu Entrepreneurs & Digital Nomads (1,000 members). Bali Expat Jobs (35,335 members) is a fairly new page for people seeking to work together or posting job opportunities. This page is also popular with people who are seeking to move to Bali and
don’t realize that it is very difficult for ex-pats to work legally in Indonesia and must be cautioned, in the face of their enthusiasm to simply pick up and move to Bali. The job pages are also good for answering legal and visa questions. I have to put a big shout out for the Bali Travel Forum page (24,726 members), a labor of love from Clare McAlaney, a writer from Western Australia, who spent a few years living in Bali. She saw the need for a Facebook page that could answer visitor questions about everything travel-related in Bali. She was my go-to resource during the times of smoking volcanoes in Java and Lombok, as she and her admins posted daily updates on airport closures and flight cancellations. I was stranded in Australia at one point and relied on information from this page to get me back when the airport re-opened. Thousands of people have relied on Clare and her team to get information at times when travelers could not reach their airlines or get answers about flight cancellations and ticket refunds, or insurance. Sadly, Clare will be closing down the page in a few months, due to work demands and the personal cost of having to deal with a handful of Internet trolls. Hopefully, she will pass the managing of the page on to someone who is willing to keep it going. In addition to Clare’s page, a new page called Mount Agung Daily Report (8,459 members) provides all the latest scientific information about Mount Agung’s pending eruption, including information about possible aviation ash advisories. Two other pages called Bali Tourists Questions and Answers (15,441 members) and Bali Travellers Information (8,435 members) also offer travel advice to tourists and visitors. There are also the Eco Travel Bali (1,785 members) and Bali Backpacker Community (16,000 members) pages that answer questions posed by eco-friendly and budget or backpacker travellers. For more in-depth focus on Balinese culture, check out Ubud Now & Then, maintained by Rio Helmi, a local photographer and blogger. Rio has been very involved in getting accurate information regarding Mount Agung’s looming eruption, riding his motorbike up into the exclusion zone and helping to bring supplies to the refugee camps and post updates about the volcano’s status and conditions in the camps. The Bali Advertiser newspaper is also a good way to stay in touch with what’s happening around Bali and Indonesia. Published every second Wednesday, the paper features columns by local writers and lots of information about upcoming events. In addition to the hard copies found at many local restaurants and shops, Bali Advertiser is also online, where you can find all past archived articles and columns. If you’re looking for a paper copy to read, Ganesha Books usually has them – but they go quickly. The Bali Advertiser has some great columns that focus on local events, such as the Ubud News and Canggu News. The Frugal Balinist column always has great tips and advice, cost saving recommendations and the like. If you’re interested in local culture or environmental issues, you shouldn’t miss Ibu Kat’s column, GreenSpeak.
