An Argentine Grillery! Batu Bara is different! It qualifies to be referred to as a steakhouse but this small hard to find garden restaurant is like no other! No doubt it is the only restaurant in Bali where the owner serves on table, and even entertains, singing as he works. Whilst cutting his teeth on the Ubud food scene at the Spanish Tapas bar on Monkey Forest Road, Argentine Pablo is now doing his own thing, and doing it very well! The actual restaurant building is so small that it only houses the kitchen and a couple of tables. The outdoor garden has been covered and that is where most of the eating, and laughter, takes place. It is a battleaxe block with a minimal road frontage to Raya Pengosekan. It is just metres before the access to parking for the Café Arma. Food of the Argentine naturally owes much to Spanish cuisine as a base, except when it comes to their steak preparation and presentation. Very Spanish are the Empanadas and they are a perfect starter. A plate of crisp, flaky, shell shaped pastries stuffed with either; corn and cheese [empanada de humita] or minced beef [empanada de carne]. It is very easy to over indulge as they are so good. On a hot night a bowl of chilled Gazpacho is very welcome, a cold tomato soup made with extra virgin olive oil and studded with raw crunchy vegetables. Croquetas with a chicken filling are another hot pastry worth trying, in fact you could easily dine here just on the entrees and be satisfied. A dish available at just about every Spanish restaurant in the world is Gambas al Ajillo, prawns in a hot garlic-laced olive oil. At Batu Bara slabs of wood-fired bread is provided for the inevitable dipping. The small wood-fired oven is located at the front corner of the garden eating area.

I like my vegetables but there are a few that leave me unimpressed. Bottom of the list is bok choy and squash but not far above them is eggplant, a vegetable that features on so many Bali ‘international’ menus. This one was so different that I just had to try, what I did not expect was to like it that much that I was tempted to order a 2nd serving. The whole eggplant is served wood-smoked. The body of it having been mashed with paprika oil, feta cheese and Thai basil, just the small stalk left as original. I have been eating in restaurants of the world for so many years but am still constantly amazed at being able to discover new and exciting things to feast on. Often they are so simple, and come from very basic peasant or village food, recipes centuries old. Now to the mains, which is the reason most people come to eat at Batu Bara. I was once told by a famous restaurateur that the secret of operating a great restaurant is to understand that dining is theatre! Over the years I have seen many examples of that creed in practice. Memories of a Greek restaurant in Brussels where as one song regularly began on the juke box all service stopped as the owner and waiters wove a crocodile line between the tables in that Greek dance made famous by Zorba.

At Batu Bara it is the method of serving the steaks. The daily options are displayed on the board but they usually include Tenderloin and Rib-Eye. The steaks are prepared in the kitchen and arrive at your table, medium rare. The waiter, more often than not Pablo the owner, places a small serving table beside yours, on top is a small grid-topped pan of burning embers. The steak is then hand sliced and the pieces places on the grid for you to complete the cooking process for your steak so it is cooked as you desire. The owner is then more than likely to burst into song as he progresses to another table. An alternate to steak is the Pork Shoulder, also prepared and served in the same manner. The mains are served plain and simple; you order the side dishes you prefer. Grilled vegetables, the Fries are skin-on wedges style but the winner is the Potato Parmentier, mashed with butter, cream and truffle. Whilst the wine list is quite small it is totally adequate for a restaurant of this type. However the real authentic Spanish Sangria is what most customers appear to order and enjoy. Steakhouses have been the 2017 thing for Bali. This one is completely different!

Lots of Legs in the Garden We’ve just come through the longest rains I can remember, with downpours so frequent and heavy that even the mosquito larvae were washed away. The roof leaked, shoes mildewed, clothes and sheets never felt really dry.

David Lowenthal, an outstanding photographer of tiny wildlife, gave me a selection of photos to choose from. He spends his nights deep in forests and gardens waiting for an interesting bug or reptile to come along, then waits for as long as it takes for the perfect shot.

Every morning Wayan Manis would arrive to work in her raincoat and hang it up to drip with a baleful glare at the sky. “Masih basah, masih gelap,” she would mutter. Still wet, still dark.

As David points out, there is a tender side to centipede family life. For example, they have distinct courtship rituals. I warmed slightly to the species after watching a couple of aroused centipedes sharing a tender moment at https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=FwPMPQjbJm4. (I know, I know, I need to get out more.)

But the garden loved the rain. Trees sent new branches scouting in all directions, vines soared up every wall and the bamboo grew visibly as I sipped my morning coffee. The durian tree bloomed luxuriantly for the first time in years and set about 60 fruit. Every few weeks the gardener and I would slash back huge heaps of biomass and heave it over the cliff along with its cargo of bugs, reptiles and amphibians. The wildlife also throve. The birds in the garden seemed more numerous. Friends who lived near rice fields excitedly reported the reappearance of fireflies. Jewel-like tree frogs napped in my shoes. My hens waded through the mud to their laying box every morning to deliver their eggs. And I began to find centipedes all over the house and garden. Tiny newborn ones, long narrow ones and a fat brown one with a thick frill of legs. I tried to be as curious and welcoming to these creatures as I was to others but the heart does not warm naturally to a centipede, I find, the way it does to a butterfly. So I did some research in order to become more comfortable with my new neighbours. As usual when investigating the creatures of Bali I turned to Ron Lilley, whose encyclopaedic knowledge of local wildlife continues to enchant me. “Centipedes (Chilipoda) are a widespread species and the large ones we have here are the genus Scolopendra; as yet no one has classified all the members in Bali,” he told me. “The centipede here is known as kaki seribu or more often lipan or kelabang to distinguish it from the millipedes. They will grow to about 15cm in Bali, although some Scolopendra elsewhere grow to over 30 cm long.” Despite the name, centipedes never have 100 legs. Depending on the species, they can have as few as 15 pairs of legs or as many as 171 pairs, but always an odd number. They may live for up to 6 years. Scolopendra are nocturnal predators, feeding primarily on insects and other invertebrates. Larger specimens have been observed preying on frogs, tarantulas, lizards, snakes, rodents, and even bats. More helpfully, around the house they consume bedbugs, termites, silverfish, spiders and even cockroaches.

Centipedes either lay eggs or bear live young depending on the species. Most females will tend to their eggs and hatchlings, curling their bodies around their brood for protection. Eggs are prone to the growth of fungi and require grooming from their devoted mothers to ensure that they hatch and thrive. Prone to dehydration, poor things, centipedes require a moist environment. I often encounter them in the compost and under plant pots. Wear gloves when working in the garden; a centipede bite, delivered by a pair of venomous ‘fangs’ near the head, is nasty. Though not life-threatening, bites can be The heart does not warm naturally to a centipede, I find, the way it does to a butterfly

extremely painful. Rinse the bite site in cold water and ice it if not too painful to constrict the blood vessels so the venom does not spread. Apply some mashed ripe papaya - the enzyme papain breaks down protein. Keep things off the ground to make your house free of centipedes; wood and rock piles next to the outer house walls should be removed. It’s wise to shake out clothes, towels and shoes in case any centipedes are hiding there. Or maybe scorpions. Like centipedes, scorpions (kalajengking) are nocturnal predators but they’re not fussy, they will sting you any old time. Ron has heard of no fatalities from scorpion bites in Bali although the sting can be painful. I can second that; the scorpion sting was the single most painful event in my memory. Even infant scorpions and centipedes can pack a mean punch, so don’t underestimate them. Scorpion courtship can be even more romantic than that of centipedes. According to the literature, “The courtship starts with the male grasping the female’s pedipalps (pincers) with his own; the pair then ‘dance’ as the male leads the female around searching for a suitable place in which to deposit his spermatophore. Or the male in some cases may inject a small amount of his venom, probably as a means of pacifying her.” The mating process can take up to 25 hours. If mating continues too long, the female may lose interest and, understandably, wander off. Scorpions produce live young, which are carried on the mother’s back until the first molt. “Roughly scorpions fall into two types: narrow-clawed and small, and ones with bigger claws like lobsters which live further inland and in damper forest conditions”, Ron says.

“The small ones can frequently be seen around human residences at night, emerging from under loose boards, rocks, bricks or woodpiles.” Interesting scorp facts for your next quiz night: because scorpions can live in such harsh environments they have adapted the ability to slow their metabolism to as little as one-third the rate for most arthropods. This enables some species to use little oxygen and survive on a single insect a year. They have ‘book’ lungs, like horseshoe crabs, which enable them to stay submerged underwater for up to 48 hours. And for reasons that scientists are still debating, scorpions glow under ultraviolet light. According to Ron, scorpions and centipedes especially the bigger ones - are increasingly kept as interesting pets here, and animal dealers regularly stock them. So we need never be puzzled again when seeking a really unusual gift for the friend who has everything. Scorpions have been known to live 25 years in captivity, so potentially a warm relationship could develop over time. Bali’s wildlife is largely unstudied. Of the 2,000 species of scorpion known in the world David has photographed seven here but there are probably more. Worldwide there are estimated to be 8,000 species of centipede, of which 3,000 have been described. David has seen and documented five species here; again, there are probably more. Except for a handful of enthusiasts like David and Ron, very few people are looking for them. Check out www.baliwildlife.com for a whole gallery of beautiful, seldom-seen creatures. Visit Ron Lilley’s Bali Snake Patrol Facebook page not just for reptilian adventures but with any wildlife queries.

A Magic Moment is when Rotary provided piglets grow up and produce more piglets! A Magic Moment is when hotels collect partially used soap and rework the soap into new bars for poor families.

Often it’s an uphill climb to create White Magic. In the village of Tista we are building homes for the homeless… but Tista is in Mt. Agung’s volcanic red danger zone. The hope is that Mt. Agung may have decided to simply go back to sleep and that our sacred mountain plans to take a very long rest.

A Magic Moment is when adult goats finally figure out how to make baby goats.

We bring consistent water supply to schools, build toilets and wash basins and teach children how and when to properly wash their hands, radically diminishing the occurrence of diarrhea. The White Magic moment is when we see children using those wash basins and scrubbing their hands with soap.

A Magic Moment is when a specially equipped bus is delivered to an NGO to give service and transportation to the disabled.

A Magic Moment is when we inspect newly built toilets and they’re CLEAN!

YOU TOO CAN MAKE THESE MAGIC MOMENTS HAPPEN. JOIN A ROTARY CLUB! DO GOOD IN THE WORLD.

A Magic Moment is when a school wins a competition for cleanest toilets, cleanest sinks and soap at every sink… and then asks that their prize be supplies to help keep their facilities sanitary and clean. A Magic Moment is when teachers from other schools come to see what a prize winning clean toilet looks like!

17 COCOON’S LATEST IN BEAUTY & RELAXATION There’s been some big changes at Cocoon Medical Spa with the addition of two large treatment rooms in the loft where there’s an infrared sauna and massages have been added to their services. Here in one of the cozy rooms outfitted with black I enjoyed a Royal Thai Touch Stretching massage. Thai massage being one of my favourites, I was delighted to learn that it would be performed on a large mat on the floor, just the way it should be. When the room was prepared I was given a warm foot bath and a white pair of trousers and a shirt to put on. After the therapist entered the room she instructed me to lie face down. The next hour flowed by with a variety of stretches and pressure along the meridians of my legs and back. After she finished with my back she asked me to turn over and went to work on my legs. She politely asked if I’d like my stomach massaged. Yes please. This consisted of a thorough massage with good pressure. Towards the end she massaged my neck, face and head which really relaxed me. She finished with me sitting for more stretching. I felt really good and energized knowing this was a proper Thai massage. Benefits of Thai Massage: • Releasing stress and tension • Energizing body and mind • Effectively used for pain relief • Improves the function of the lymph glands & blood circulation • Balances the nerve system • Clears out blocked and stagnant energy • Helps with a range of musculoskeletal problems including back, neck, shoulder, hip and leg pain. Cocoon Relax & Glow Treatment - honey & sugar body scrub followed by massage with Ayurvedic oil. Benefits of Relax & Glow Treatment • Exfoliating dead layers of skin • Provides natural glow to skin Barefoot Bliss Ashiatsu Massage – performed using the practitioner’s feet and oil. This is a very strong massage able to go deeper than with the hands. I experienced this unique massage which uses the practitioner’s feet only to slide along the muscles and press deeply into the muscles. Benefits of Barefoot Bliss Massage • Enhances feelings of well-being • Stimulates the circulatory system • Release the chronically sore, tight tissues • Improves flexibility • Elongates the spine and improves posture • Boosts and balances the body’s energy • Loosens the back and shoulders • Relieves pain and stress, promoting relaxation

A new addition to the Cocoon menu for facial treatments is the Marine Mineral Purifier. The nurse warned me that this facial may take 120 to 150 minutes to thoroughly cleanse the skin, removing all the white and black heads that most people seem to have accumulated. I told her that I didn’t have many, which she clearly didn’t believe. After cleansing the face a soothing massage almost lulled me to sleep. After removing the massage cream she steamed my face to open the pores for extraction. When she set about the extraction process with her little tool she was very surprised at how few white heads were on my chin and nose. “What do you do to keep your face so clean?” she asked. “I use a facial scrub every week.” “Wow. It really works.” She commented with admiration. After the little excavating she had to do she used a galvanic instrument to soothe the skin and prevent redness. Next she gently applied a thick layer of Marine Mineral mask from the Dead Sea over my face. This would nourish and hydrate my skin. Now I could enjoy a twenty minute “cat nap” waiting for the mask to dry. After carefully removing all of the mask she placed a pair of eye protectors over my eyes for the red LED light treatment to stimulate collagen production for twenty minutes.

C/He/G-14 Feb. 18

Last but not least came the moisturizing cream that was gently massaged into my skin. This was followed by a sunscreen protector as the sun was still shining. The whole treatment took a little over two hours. When I got up from the bed and looked in the mirror my face was glowing with health. This is the perfect facial to combat the pollution we battle against every time we go out on the street. 21 On exoplanets, tardigrades and other fun factoids to spice up your Trivia quiz night The solar system, space, the void and the cosmos are a treasure throve of weird and wondrous things. Some scientists have an enormous curiosity for the many celestial bodies, entities and other mysteries that are lurking out there and which they want to discover. Black holes, white giants, dwarf stars and other marvellous astral forms create an exciting hunting ground for cosmologists, astronomers and astrophysicists. They are forever looking to spot something new or discover Earth-like planets to prove that we are not alone in the void. Back in 1996 scientists discovered the existence of exoplanets; these are planets revolving around stars outside our solar system. The excitement hit top level 20 years later when a team of Belgian astrophysicists confirmed they spotted a trio of planets orbiting an ultra cool dwarf star some 39 light years away, comparable in size and temperature to our Earth. These planets are considered ‘potentially habitable’, they said, given that they may have regions at temperatures within a range suitable for sustaining liquid water and life. That is because like Earth, they rotate around a heat and light giving stellar body like our sun. This ultra-cool dwarf star has about half of our sun’s temperature, making the existence of viable life-forms a definite possibility. Staying closer to our own planet, you already knew that the Milky Way is huge. But were you aware that it takes about 230 million years for our solar system to circumnavigate the Milky Way? These numbers are mind boggling so it is a bit more digestible to learn that fellow solar-system planet Saturn has over 150 known moons, whose diameters range from less than 10 to over 5000 km. A Saturnian year, i.e. the time it takes to complete a single orbit around the sun, equals almost 30 Earth years – 29.5 to be a bit more exact. Other great fodder for your trivia quiz questions is that Venus has the longest day in the solar system. It completes one rotation every 243 Earth days. Its day lasts longer than its orbit. It orbits the sun every 224.65 Earth days, so a day on Venus is nearly 20 Earth days longer than its year. Now on to space creatures. If you have seen the latest Star Trek film, you already encountered the sci-fi version of tardigrades. The film introduces a character named Ripper, a space tardigrade who is able to borrow and incorporate foreign DNA (in this case from mushroom spores cultivated in the ship’s greenhouse) into its own genome via horizontal gene transfer. This allows him to travel at more than warp speed and take himself and the entire ship into another space dimension.

C/E/I-14 March 18

A tardigrade is a real animal, not just a figment of someone’s imagination. However, the real tardigrades are quite a bit different from the Ripper version. They are very small, short and plump creatures, about 0.5 mm (0.02 in) long, with four pairs of legs, each with four to eight claws. They are prevalent in mosses and lichens and feed on plant cells, algae, and small invertebrates. They have been found everywhere: from mountain tops to the deep sea and mud volcanoes, from tropical rain forests to the Antarctic. Tardigrades are one of the most resilient known animals, with individual species able to survive extreme conditions that would be rapidly fatal to nearly all other known life forms, such as exposure to extreme temperatures, extreme pressures (both high and low), air deprivation, radiation, dehydration, and starvation. Tardigrades have been revived after being frozen for 30 years; therefore they got a bit of a reputation of being the immortal animal. But warp speeds they don’t do. Talking about wondrous animals, researchers at the University of Manchester are studying a fossilized hatchling that is around 127 million years old and was discovered at Las Hoyas in Spain. This hatchling pecked itself out of its shell but succumbed soon after. The skeleton—which is well preserved and nearly complete—offers researchers a window into the stages of avian development in the Mesozoic era, the time of dinosaurs. It has been identified as a member of the enantiornithine family, a group of birds - extinct now- which were the most abundant and diverse group known from the Mesozoic era. Almost all retained teeth and clawed fingers on each wing, but otherwise looked much like modern birds externally. The hatchling in question is petite, measuring about the length of your little finger, and weighing less than three ounces. The amazing thing is that the techniques to study the tiny bones of this critter have just recently been developed; therefore we can be assured we still will learn a lot more about our planet’s early creatures. Have you ever wondered if some of Leonardo Da Vinci’s fabulous inventions are still in use today? Besides being a gifted artist he was also a very practical inventor and the world is richer thanks to the many inventions he bequeathed us. Leonardo’s fascination with flight and flight machines netted us the parachute. The double ship hull and diving gear are maritime contributions. On the mechanical side there are ball bearing, spring drive, rack and pinion gear, the humble scissors and the bucket wheel excavator. Odometers and anemometers are common in today’s world. He also invented the first robot. There are many more examples and even many more that were lost to history because, although Leonardo was definitely a genius and a man of many talents, a good documenter he was not. 22 Where Australia Collides with Asia by Ian Burnet This ambitious, sweeping history surveys both the cataclysmic shifts of continents and also the lives of some of the world’s greatest scientist-explorers. The story, as told in the book’s Prologue, begins as the Australian land mass breaks away from Antarctica 50 million years ago - a gigantic raft of flora and fauna called Gondwanaland adrift on a slow-motion journey north towards the equator. Though my personal bias leans more to historical, biographical and cultural rather scientific, I found the geological, zoological and botanical information in the first several chapters necessary to set the scene by describing the region’s physical world. Author Ian Burnet’s focus on the earth sciences reflect his background as a geologist. Burnet gives special attention to the birth of the Australian subcontinent, an extraordinary domain of marsupials, startling plant life, colorful parrots and exquisite songbirds that had evolved during its 30 million years of isolation. His precise, erudite and quietly exuberant writing is an expression of the obvious pride and wonder that he holds for his native land. The human story gets underway with the arrival of the first trained naturalists in Australia in 1770. Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, on the ship Endeavour, were the first to record the subcontinent’s unique plants and animals. In the retelling of the experiences of these famous scientists, we come upon the first mention of Indonesian archipelago as the Endeavor pulls into Batavia, the capital of the Dutch East Indies. After repairs and refitting, the ship embarks three months later, leaving behind the bodies of seven crew members who had died of tropical diseases. Evolutionary theory as developed in the work of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace is a central and abiding theme in the book. Author Ian Burnet builds up a sense of drama as the emerging science is gradually developed during various stages of research aided by their sharp observations of the natural world. We learn how each man stumbled upon the first inklings of the origin of species and the evolutionary process, awakened to the fact that larger forces were at work. Charles Darwin was a cautious man burdened with a bold idea. When Origin of Species was published in 1859, it sold out on the first day of publication. The book was a bombshell that revealed processes that flew in the face of the Church of England’s tradition of Natural Theology. Darwin’s theory meant that humans were part of the same tree of life as other organisms. Origin caused consternation in the scientific community, attacked and rebuked on every side by creationists as it is to this day. But the brilliant treatise assured that Darwin’s name will forever be linked to the theory of evolution by natural selection. The chapters dealing with Wallace - the most famous scientist that you’ve never heard of - are the most revelatory. Wallace financed his first trip to the Amazon by selling specimens to museums and private collectors in England. After exploring South America, he became interested in South East Asia. He met Rajah Brooke of North Borneo who secured the help of the Royal Geographic Society for a free passage to Singapore, using the old colonial port as a springboard for his forays into the archipelago. Not just a preeminent naturalist, Wallace was also an anthropologist who studiously observed the habits of native peoples he encountered. He recorded the vocabularies of 57 distinct regional languages in the islands. An endearing characteristic of Wallace was his boundless enthusiasm, even during the course of a terrifyingly difficult and life-threatening nine-month sea voyage to the eastern extremity of the archipelago on a Bugis perahu in which he faced disease, shipwrecks and raids by Maguindanao pirates from the Sulu Sea.

As a collector, Wallace shot and skinned 15 orangutans and wrote three scientific papers on the “Man of the Forest.” He was the first to capture the magnificent golden Birdwing butterfly, the first to sight birds of paradise in the wild and the first to bring live birds of paradise to the Western world. On a collecting trip to Halmahera Wallace fell ill with malaria. In a state of delirium, he independently conceived of the idea of the survival of the fittest. His famous ‘Letter from Ternate’ dispatched to Charles Darwin forced Darwin to finally publish his landmark work. After an eight-year absence, the 39-year-old Wallace arrived back in England in 1862. In 1864, he began working on The Malay Archipelago. Based on field journals he had kept during his years traveling in Malaysia and Indonesia, the opus was published in 1869. Never out of print, written with simplicity, clarity and literary elegance, this wonderful book is both a travel journal and scientific work. To this day, it remains the greatest travel book on the region and one of the greatest of all time. The zoological demarcation between Asia and Australasia, called The Wallace Line, is today named in Wallace’s honor.

On every page of Where Australia Collides with Asia, the reader is embarking on yet another adventure - whether it be to the isolated Galapagos Islands, upriver on the wild Amazon, to the Land Down Under, to the deep interior of Borneo, to the remote islands of the Banda Sea or across the Argentine pampas while discovering surprising new worlds of landforms, animal and plant life and races of people. One can sense the author’s excitement and his desire to infect others with his love of nature. Burnet has a knack for revealing the most beguiling personality traits and idiosyncrasies of historical figures – the vanity of scientist Joseph Banks, the puritanism of the landscape painter Sydney Parkinson, Darwin’s inordinate predilection for collecting and cataloging exotic insects and Wa l l a c e ’s g o o d n a t u r e a n d unbreakable fortitude even under the most trying of circumstances.

In my mind, the passages relating Darwin and Wallace, their epic voyages, nearly simultaneous discovery of the theory of evolution and their literary accomplishments are the most readable parts of the book. The frequent quotes – as many as three to a page – from the journals and letters of the main characters enable us to peer inside the minds of these great scientists to learn of their innermost doubts, jealousies, prejudices and secret pleasures. But above all this is an explorer’s book about the adventures of intrepid men with ample doses of science, anthropology and natural history thrown in for good measure. C/E/G-17 Jan. 18

Say What? Question: Next weekend, a woman I consider to be a friend is having a party, and I have not been invited. I can’t help feeling rejected even though I’ve made peace with the fact that, as much as we may like each other platonically, she doesn’t have any romantic interest in me. There are two possible explanations for her failure to invite me. First, she may just not like me that much. She has considerably more friends than I do; so while I consider her to be one of my closer associates, I may be relatively low on her list. Other than that, because I have absolutely no reputation for attending this kind of event, she may not have thought to invite me; or perhaps she considered it and assumed I wouldn’t go. My question is whether it may be a good idea for me to talk to her about it, directly or indirectly, and what such a conversation might entail. I welcome your input. Thanks! Dr. ZZ: There are lots of reasons why someone might not invite you to a party. Whatever the reasons in this case - the ones you mentioned are good - it’s important to understand that they are her reasons. It’s a party to which she gets to invite whomever she pleases, not a referendum on how much she likes you. Normally, I’m all for speaking up and communicating, but in this case, I sense that you may be obsessing on this person. Even if not in a romantic/sexual way – probably because you’re lonely and starving for affection and approval -- you’re over-thinking and over-investing in your interactions with her and latching onto crumbs when they come your way. This in itself can turn people off and lead to a self-perpetuating cycle of obsession, hopelessness and rejection. If this is the case, then the worst thing you can do to deepen your involvement with her is to bug her in order to get invited to this or future events. I also advise against auditing your encounters with her for signs of how much she likes

later, she said she’d be busy the whole day. I accepted this and moved on.

you, how much she talks to you, or how something she says or does is moving the value of your friendship up or down. I know it’s hurtful and anxiety-inducing to be excluded from something and to feel as if someone you like is underestimating how appealing you could be if given a chance. It’s not fair; it’s totally subjective, and it’s a hard lesson for anyone. Right now, the best thing you can do is to avoid thinking about the party and stop taking the temperature of this friendship. Deliberately make other plans for the evening of the party and invite people you like to do something else with you. Put effort into your other friendships, and move on with the day. Keep your interactions with this woman light, and give them at lot of time and space. If your friendship is true and genuine, there will be other opportunities for you to hang out together and to discover if you are party-compatible. Question: Last year I started dating a woman on Java where I lived, but shortly afterward I was forced to move to Bali for work. We’ve been doing the long distance thing ever since, and it’s been going quite splendidly. She tells me that she loves me and misses me, but when the rare opportunity takes palce for me go back to visit her, she usually says she’s too busy, which is fine; I respect that. But on a recent Sunday, I had an opportunity to see her for a couple hours in the late morning, and she said she’d love to and would have to “see about it.” When I asked again a couple days

The problem was that when that Sunday rolled around, she showed up on Twitter at about noon, saying she’d just woken up. Again, I don’t care about that on its own. I understand that it’s none of my business if she wants to sleep till noon. But should it at least bother me that she’d rather sleep than see me, and that she felt the need to lie about it? I’m just not certain how personally I should be taking this. Thanks for any advice you can give. Dr. ZZ: Taking the most generous possible view of your girlfriend’s behavior, she has a busy life and needs a lot of notice to schedule time to hang out with you when you visit, and she’s setting boundaries about that by not making herself immediately available. Perhaps she wants to see you, but her schedule is packed and inflexible, and when you arrive at the last minute it stresses her out; so she needs lots of notice. Or perhaps she works nights all week, and while Sunday morning is technically “free,” that’s her only chance to catch up on sleep. Even if this is true, and she has fully articulated her needs about scheduling, how is that working for you? You use words like “fine” and “splendidly” as if things are going well, and as if all your needs are being met; but, despite her protestations of love, this woman and you seem to be pen pals, who are never in the same place at the same time. Then, when you make the time to visit, she finds a way to not be in the same room with you. This is what we call a “red flag.” Yes, you can take this personally. It’s time to ask your girlfriend/pen pal what’s up and to be prepared to move on.

27 WHEN BAD NEWS AFFECTS YOUR FINANCIAL PLANS When Gunung Agung came back to life last September, after remaining dormant since the early 60’s, many lives were turned upside down. Hardest hit were the local residents who were forced to flee the exclusion zone around the mountain, many of whom are still unable to return to their homes and livelihoods until the authorities deem it safe to do so. The impact was felt severely by the tourist industry also and again by the thousands of local people dependent upon it. Gradually however business is returning to normal but with the knowledge that Agung can turn angry again at any moment. Those who survived the last eruption when people were less prepared are more than aware of the dangers. Expatriate residents of Bali have been affected in many ways; some by the fall in the number of visitors to their hotels, restaurants or tourist facilities, to others who now find it harder to sell their properties. Many quickly adapted to the challenge by offering free hotel stays in the event of flight disruptions or arranged temporary closures and layoffs in restaurants to preserve capital. Some have even capitalised on the eruption to turn it into a tourist attraction – at a safe distance of course, although until the rainy season ends and the clouds clear there’s not a lot to see!

in presenting just facts about the ‘super-volcano’ for example that it tends to erupt only every few hundred thousand years the headline is likely to read ‘A super-volcano waking up in the USA’ and even ‘End of the World’. As if that is not enough, one link then invited Youtube addicts to listen to the sounds that scientists in Russia heard when they dug a hole in the earth to 14 kilometres and then lowered a microphone. The sound it picked up was that of thousands of tormented souls, leading to the conclusion that they had discovered Hell. There are multiple Youtube contributions reflecting the same story. Fortunately there is one that debunks the tale and reveals that the ‘sounds from Hell’ deep in the earth were actually an adaption of part of the sound track from a 1970’s horror movie ‘Baron Blood’. I mention the above because there are clearly people who believe this nonsense as you can see from some of the viewer comments. No doubt they are impressed by the seriousness of the presentations and the apparent credibility of the presenter. Of course the people who post these videos stand to gain financially when they attract large numbers of hits, hence the tendency to use attention-grabbing and sensational headlines. And how about this for ‘fake news’?

For those affected by events long term financial planning should not be compromised if a prudent cash reserve for emergencies is in place. What other bad news is out there? In short plenty! The latest bombshell to come out of the US is President Trump’s latest measure to add steep tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium. That is unlikely to directly affect expatriates in Bali but his measures to reduce imports overall from Indonesia and other countries may well affect a number of local exporters of garments and other manufactured goods to the US. Trump’s belief that the rest of the world is cheating the US has wider implications as his lack of understanding of international trade can undermine the advances in global standards of living achieved over decades. Implications for businesses and investors alike are very negative as no-one really wins a trade war or any other kind of war. Solutions for business people affected are to diversify target markets and not to depend almost entirely on any one particular market. This has always been the advice I have given. If you are invested directly or indirectly (eg through pension schemes) in the stock markets you should not be overly concerned as any dip is likely to be temporary. Markets and countries have a way of resolving issues and in any event Mr. Trump could well reverse his position as he frequently has done. Bad news did not affect the markets in 2017 Given the numerous crises in 2017 including the North Korean threat, increased tensions in the Middle East, the migrant problem in Europe, the rise in several countries of popularism, Brexit and natural disasters one would have been forgiven for predicting a huge market crash. But it didn’t happen. The markets took events in their stride and continued to bask in the sunshine of corporate profits and where the US was concerned an expectation of more of the same as Mr. Trump announced big tax cuts (for the better-off). Economists do however expect that someone is going to have to pick up the tab sooner or later so to be realistic we should not expect the kind of returns we saw last year to be repeated. Really bad news could well be fake news! If you are a determined pessimist and want to be really depressed you need look no further than the Internet for inspiration. Probably like you I have been watching live feeds of Agung on Youtube. Now Youtube has a way (like all social media) of retaining viewers’ attention by tempting them to move on to another video which they believe will interest them. Hence their videos of other and more dramatic volcanoes around the world. Several focus on one of the potentially most damaging volcanoes, Yellowstone National Park in the US. Not satisfied

Do you recall a headline being blasted from respected TV stations and the press early last month: ‘Biggest daily fall ever in Dow Index’. It was not exactly ‘fake’ because the Dow actually did fall by its largest number ever in one day. But that was because it now stands at a much higher number than in years gone by. In percentage terms it was only around 3.5%. Compare that with the 40%+ fall in the US markets during the Global Financial Crisis and you can see how insignificant the fall actually was. Yet the headline itself caused many to panic and ask if they should cash out and ‘run for the hills’. Such is the power and influence of the media.

So how should we react to ‘bad news’? As it happened the markets recovered half their losses in a few days and although volatility abounds due to political mis-steps and the prospect of a rise in interest rates nothing should cause people to change course in their long-term planning. There will always be ‘bad news’ in the course of any long journey. The best way to handle it is by anticipation before an event. This means for those involved in business diversify your product and your target market. (Even Kentucky Fried Chicken ran out of chicken recently in the UK; fortunately they were able to offer fish until supplies were restored.) Where financial planning is concerned insurance is the first step; ensure you are fully covered for life’s nasty surprises. Keep ample cash reserves so you can weather an emergency or disruption. Keep saving for your long term needs and retirement. And finally, don’t let news headlines intimidate you and throw you off course!

What the Heck is Banana Coin? I was chatting to a younger, hipper friend of mine the other day, who also happens to work in social media. We were discussing bananas, and how certain varieties are threatened by climate change and a fungal disease. ‘Oh,’ she said, ‘Then you will have heard of Banana Coin.’ ‘No,’ I replied. ‘What on earth is that?’ ‘The newest form of crypto currency,’ she answered. ‘But it’s not just about making money, it’s also designed to help save bananas and grow more of them.’ Turns out she knew what she was talking about. Banana Coin is a real thing. It’s been described as a combination of crypto currency and crowd funding. Banana Coin was set up by a team that includes Russian entrepreneurs and philanthropists, and a Thai agronomist, who are all experienced at growing bananas and have been doing so in Laos for the past three years, together with software development experts and legal experts. The Banana Coin’s White Paper (available as a pdf at https://bananacoin.io/ fi les/White_Paper_Bananacoin_en.pdf) states that ‘the Banana Coin Project was established … in order to take advantage of block chain technology in addressing real business objectives.’

tokens using blockchain and [the crytocurrency called] Ethereum. Tokens will be emitted based on the export price of 1 kilogram of bananas.’ What this means is that each Bananacoin is a type of future speculation and/or investment in banana production: each coin represents ‘just over two pounds of bananas that will be grown on an everexpanding plantation in Laos.’ The Bananacoin team currently farm about 100 hectares of land in Laos, and are hoping to raise enough money to increase their land size to 360 hectares within two years. Bananas are one of Laos’ main export crops. Export income from bananas tripled from 2010 to 2016, with China becoming the biggest customer. In 2011-2012, China accounted for 42% of banana imports from Laos, and this figure grew to 88% in 2014-2015. The Chinese demand for bananas is expected to keep increasing.

Crypto currency, for those of you not familiar with the term, is, according to Dictionary.com (which had a good concise explanation): ‘a digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds, operating independently of a central bank.’ A blockchain is a list of records (which increase everytime crytocurrency is bought or sold) called blocks, which are linked together and use cryptograhpic security measures to maintain the anonymity of buyers and sellers. All the transactions occur outside regulatory agencies, such as banks or government agencies, through the security of the block chain. Phew. Confused? I still am a bit. Anyway, the blockchain is a highly secure method of anonymously transferring, accuring and storing cryptocurrency. Most people have heard of BitCoin, however, there are now many types of cryptocurrencies. So back to Banana Coin. Banana Coin will, according to the White Paper, ‘create

popular in Western countries), which currently constitutes almost all the current type of banana exported and sold in the West, is under threat of extinction from a fungus called Panama Disease. This blight wiped out a previous varietal known as Gros Michel, or Big Mike, that was replaced by the Cavendish variety, which was thought to be resistant to Panama Disease. (It’s not.) The Bananacoin team hopes to ‘achieve a core modifiction of the global banana production industry, similar to how Uber has revolutionzed the taxi industry or Upwork has brought freelancing to a new level.’ Backers ‘invest in expansion of production and become holders of Bananacoin tokens (BCO), which can be exchanged after product launch for goods or funds and are expected to more than double in value in 18 months time.’ The goal of the project, in addition to expanding land under banana production, is to achieve ‘over 360% growth in product sales on the Chinese market.’ Once the project has been realised, Bananacoin holders can exchange their tokens either for Lady Finger bananas, or ‘equivalent monetary compensation.’ Because the demand for bananas is constant, and rising, and ‘because the token is backed by the market value of 1 kilogram of bananas, participants can be certain of the success of the project,’ according to the White Paper. In addition, the fact that the Bananacoin crop is grown organically is sure to appeal strongly to a Chinese market that is keen for food security and a guarantee of ‘farm to store’ transparency, after the food adulteration and contamination issues that have rocked China. Modern, affluent, middle class Chinese are known to pay a premium for food that can be proven to be organic or bio-dynamic. In the longer term, the Bananacoin team is planning to apply to an Asian agricultural fund and increase their production area to 1,000 hectares.

The Banancoin project grows the Lady Finger banana variety, which is valuable for three reasons: first, this is the world’s most profitable type of banana; second, Chinese demand for this banana is already strong and always increasing; thirdly, the Cavendish varietal of banana (the one

Local News FBI seizes $250 million megayacht A luxury yacht has been seized in Indonesia as part of an FBI investigation into alleged multibillion-dollar corruption at a Malaysian state-run investment fund. Local police and FBI officers were seen onboard the $250million vessel moored off the tourist island of Bali, on Wednesday. It is owned by Malaysian financier Jho Low, a businessman educated at prestigious British boarding school Harrow, who is friends with Hollywood celebrities like Leonardo Di Caprio. The yacht is part of $540 million in assets allegedly embezzled from the Malaysian government fund that the U.S. Justice Department is seeking to recover. Overall, the Justice Department says more than $4.5 billion was stolen from the fund, set up in 2009 by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. Razak was embroiled in the scandal when it emerged that nearly $1 billion had passed through his personal bank accounts. He and the fund deny any wrongdoing. Among the assets sought by the U.S. Justice Department is Mr Low’s luxury yacht, Equanimity, now seized in Bali. The lawsuits said Low used proceeds diverted from 1MDB to procure Equanimity, which it described as a 300-foot yacht registered in the Cayman Islands. The vessel has an interior clad in marble and gold leaf, a spa and sauna, a 66-foot swimming pool on deck, a movie theatre, a lift and a helipad, says a website on luxury charters, yachtcharterfleet.com. Low’s whereabouts are unknown and his Hong Kong company has not responded to requests for comment. Agung Setya, director of economic crimes at Indonesia’s national police, told MetroTV that local authorities began working with U.S. authorities a week ago in relation to the vessel. He said it was located on Tuesday in waters off the island of Lombok, which neighbors Bali, and then shifted to Bali’s Tanjung Benoa waters. ‘We have legal confirmation that this asset is the result of a crime,’ he said. ‘Our law stipulates that anyone who hides an asset resulting from the proceeds of crime is committing a money laundering crime.’ Setya said police had secured a court order to seize Equanimity and are questioning its 34 crew. In an emailed statement through his representative in June last year, Low said the DOJ’s actions were an example ‘of global overreach in pursuit of a deeply flawed case’. Other assets allegedly bought by Low with stolen 1MDB funds include a private jet, a hotel and real estate in New York, and a $107-million interest in EMI Music Publishing. Some assets have been returned. Australian model and actress Miranda Kerr handed over millions of dollars worth of jewelry that U.S. authorities say was given to her by Low, including a jewelry set gifted to her during a 2014 excursion on Equanimity. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio also returned to authorities an Oscar once owned by actor Marlon Brando and other items the United States says were funded with 1MDB money. [Daily Mail February 28, 2018] Diver films wave of plastic pollution off Bali on scale ‘never seen before’ In a video uploaded to social media, diver Rich Horner is seen swimming through masses of floating plastic garbage at a dive spot usually frequented by manta rays which come to get cleaned. Although the dive site lies off the coast of Nusa Penida - a small island with low population - there is a stretch of only 20 kilometres of water separating Nusa Penida from the island of Bali and its capital Denpasar. “Plastic straws, plastic baskets, plastic bags, more plastic bags, plastic, plastic, so much plastic!” Mr Horner wrote on Facebook. Mr Horner said the level of plastic at that site varied throughout the year, and there was no plastic visible during the dry season but random clouds and slicks appear during the wet season. He said this trash in the footage had cleared by the next day. Janis Argeswara, a marine science student at Udayana University, said she was shocked about the manta rays swimming in a “pile of trash”. “Bali’s economy depends heavily on tourism for income,” she said. Large ocean species attract thousands of wildlife enthusiasts to tourism destinations such as Indonesia every year. They also make up a large part of Australia’s tourism dollars. And while the waters of South-East Asia are some of the worst affected in terms of plastic waste, rubbish is also entering Australian waters. Researchers have long found a microplastic hot spot near the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, which is famous for its whale shark encounters. Many of the species at risk from microplastics are endangered already. The world’s largest fish, the whale shark, is listed as vulnerable on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with only 7,000 remaining species in 2016. With a decreasing current population trend, manta rays have also been designated a threatened species. “I just really want to make a fuss about this and draw attention to these amazing creatures, knowing that they are important to tourism, so that these countries consider protecting their assets,” Ms Germanov said. [ABC News March 6, 2018] Indonesia brings together former militants and attack survivors Indonesia’s anti-terrorism agency on Wednesday held a controversial meeting of 124 former Islamic militants and 51 survivors of a string of attacks in the country, including the deadly Bali bombings. The gathering was part of a broader deradicalization push by authorities in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country, which has pioneered new initiatives to tackle the problem. Chusnul Kotimah, who was badly burned in the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings, which killed 202 people, said she was prepared to forgive those behind the attacks. “I can accept the situation. I can forgive them,” she told Reuters at the event in a central Jakarta hotel, adding that she had told former militants that as a fellow Muslims there was no justification for such terror. Nonetheless, the head of a survivors’ group who decided not to go criticized holding a mass meeting under the glare of the media. Other survivors said they needed more support and medical help from authorities. “The mass reconciliation by BNPT (Indonesia’s anti-terrorism agency) is too risky for the victims, in terms of their mental state and psychology, and for their trauma,” said Sucipto Hari Wibowo, co-founder of the Indonesian Survivors Foundation and a survivor of the 2004 Australian embassy attack in Jakarta. But Indonesia’s chief security minister, Wiranto, who uses one name like many Indonesians, said he wanted such events to be held regularly. Also attending were the country’s social, higher education and manpower ministers, who pledged to help survivors with health care and employment. A former militant said meeting survivors had helped him understand the suffering of attack victims. “I think this is the most effective way of deradicalization, because in the past there were some terrorists who (until they met the victims) were not aware that their deeds were wrong,” said Sofyan Tsauri, who was convicted of supplying weapons to a militant training camp in the province of Aceh. Indonesia has suffered a series of major militant attacks over the years, the worst of which was the 2002 Bali bombing, which spurred Western nations offer help in forming an elite counter-terrorism unit that has proved effective. But recent years have seen a resurgence in home-grown militancy, largely inspired by Islamic State. Hundreds of Indonesians are believed to have traveled to Syria to join the group, but many have returned as it has lost territory. It was only human to still hold on to anger, said Deny Mahieu, a police officer wounded in the right leg during 2016 bomb and gun attacks in central Jakarta, after meeting one of the suspects in his case. “But... if we still feel vengeful it will not solve the problem,” he said. [Reuters February 28, 2018] North Bali airport ‘cancellation’ not final, still under consideration The Ministry of Transportation (Menhub) seems far from gung ho about building an airport in North Bali, but conclusions about the airport being flat out “cancelled” are premature, Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said on Monday. A study from the World Bank and state-owned infrastructure financing company PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI) has recommended that the development of the airport not go through and that resources instead be used to improve South Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, but Sumadi says a final decision has not yet been made. “We are reviewing (the study). It is not final, but there are suggestions to concentrate on South Bali. It’s not final,” Karya said on Monday, as quoted by Detik. While Sumadi apparently declined to go too deeply into the study, he did say it’s been evaluating economic, social, and environmental impacts. The Coordinating Minister for the Ministry of Marine Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan had previously stated on Friday that the construction of the North Bali Airport was cancelled. The airport, a project estimated to cost IDR 27 trillion (US$1.9 billion) would be built in Bali’s quiet regency of Buleleng, where relatively few tourists travel to. The regency is about 90 kilometers north of busy tourist hub Kuta. Bali’s current governor Made Mangku Pastika has been a huge proponent of the airport, insisting it will usher in even more tourists and will spread the development out to the island’s rural north as a tourism destination of its own. There has been talk of an airport up on Bali’s lesser-developed north end for years, but little action. This is partly because of the challenge of land acquisition, an obstacle that the project hopes to sidestep by instead reclaiming land to build an artificial island.[Coconuts Bali March 6, 2018]

Two Australian crew members held after 91 metre luxury superyacht was seized off Bali Two Australians on a $250 million luxury yacht off the coast in Bali are currently embroiled in an international fraud investigation. 29 crew members, including the two Australians, were cruising on a deluxe 91m yacht named Equanimity fitted with its own sauna, swimming pool and helipad before it was seized by authorities. The FBI and Indonesian authorities are leading an investigation into an alleged money laundering scheme worth more than five billion dollars. The luxury vessel registered in the Cayman Islands and the US justice department claims it is owned by Malaysian tycoon Jho Low, who is accused of embezzling millions of dollars from the Malaysian government fund between 2009 and 2015. FBI officials allege the vessel’s owners had attempted to evade Southeast Asian waters to avoid questioning over a $5.7 billion international fraud case, The Herald Sun reports. The FBI and Indonesian police boarded the Equanimity where they questioned the yacht’s captain and crew. According to the FBI, the yacht’s captain a young South African named Rolf Sieboldt-Berry is a suspect and is being questioned by police to assist in their investigations. A police spokesman in Jakarta said Mr Sieboldt-Berry is a suspect for not turning over the yacht wanted for assets seizure and could be liable under money laundering laws. [Daily Mail March 2, 2018] Thieves use explosives to rob ATM machine in South Kuta A brazen and violent group of thieves robbed an ATM owned by CIMB Bank Niaga located at the Nirmala Shopping Center on Jalan Pantai Balangan in South Kuta on Thursday, March 1, 2018. As reported by Beritabali.com, the thieves blew up an ATM and got away with an estimated Rp. 390 million after attacking and stabbing a 50-year-old watchman, I Made Suwitra. The robbery took place at 2:30 am with local residents roused from the sleep by the sound of the loud explosion. A local eyewitness, I Wayan Sentana (41), said the sound of the explosion sounded like what he thought was a bomb. When Santana and his wife walked to the ATM but were driven back by the hot atmosphere surrounding the ATM. Another witness told police that he saw a black Innova and a one Avanza parked on the eastern side of the ATM. The same witness also said he saw two men wearing masks near the ATM and vehicles. It is believed that the Innova was used to remove the ATM from the scene. Police say the robbers threatened, beat, and bound the watchman who was bruised and lost two teeth in the incident. The guard was brought to a local hospital for treatment. Police are theorizing that the same group who robbed at Maybank ATM on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai on November 17, 2018, where a watchman was also viciously assaulted, performed the latest robbery. [www.balidiscovery.com March 6, 2018] Australia urges Indonesia against showing cleric leniency Australia on Saturday urged Indonesia against any leniency toward the ideological leader of the Bali bombers as the government considers house arrest or other forms of clemency for the ailing radical cleric who is now in prison. Wiranto, Indonesia’s top security minister, said Friday that a meeting of security ministers and police will make a recommendation on Abu Bakar Bashir’s treatment to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. “Clemency, pardon, house arrest or just hospital treatment. It will be discussed in the near future and will be reported to the president,” said Wiranto, who uses a single name. Bashir, who turns 80 in August, was treated in a Jakarta hospital on Thursday for pooling of blood in the legs, a common condition in the elderly known as chronic venous insufficiency, and later returned to prison. Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said on Thursday that the government plans to place Bashir under house arrest so he can be cared for by his family or transfer him to a prison near his hometown, Solo in Central Java, according to local media. His numerous sympathizers hope Jokowi will grant him a permanent release due to his poor health, a move that would help mend fences between hard-line Muslims and Jokowi ahead of a presidential election in 2019 but alarm allies such as the United States and Australia. Jokowi’s approval ratings remain high with the broader Indonesian public. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s office on Saturday described Bashir as the mastermind behind the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreigners including 88 Australians. Bishop’s office said in a statement that Australians expected justice to continue to be served to “the full extent that Indonesian law allows.” “Abu Bakar Bashir should never be allowed to incite others to carry other future attacks against innocent civilians,” the statement added. Bashir was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2011 for supporting a military-style training camp for Islamic militants. The firebrand cleric was arrested almost immediately after the Bali bombing. But prosecutors were unable to prove a string of terrorism-related allegations. He was instead sentenced to 18 months in prison for immigration violations. Jokowi’s spokesman, Johan Budi, said the president will review the case, and house arrest is “possible under the law.” He said a suggestion to pardon Bashir came from Indonesian Ulema Council chairman Ma’ruf Amin and would require Bashir to apply for clemency. That appears unlikely as it would involve Bashir recognizing secular authority. After being sentenced in 2011, he said he rejected the conviction because it was based on “infidel” law. Letters To Bali Advertiser

Senior European Hotel GM,

Too Old? No Debit Cards?

years SE-Asia, available for

Hallo Dear Bali Advertiser Team, I am surprised, that my Bank ( Maybank/ and others) don’t issue a Debit Card, if a person is older than 65 years! I thought this is impossible, why should a bank cut out a business, where they can make money without a risk (Debit card). Is it possible for the Bali Advertiser to undertake a research, why it is like it is? Or I am wrong, and there is a possibility to get a Debit card? I am sure a lot of foreigners, living in Bali are interested to know more about this topic. Could you please inform your customers about the real situation and how to manage this situation? I have a KITAP as a pensioner (over 65 years) and I try to get a Debit card (Mastercard/Visa card) from my bank in Ubud (Maybank/BCA and others). But this seems not possible for people over 65 years. Does someone know why? And is there a Bank in Indonesia/Bali where I can get a Debit card? I am very interested to get an answer and maybe a solution how to manage this. Kulture Kid! Maaf saya gaptek!

By Vaughan Hatch

An acronym, ‘gagap teknologi’ means technologically inept. While there are record numbers of Indonesians on social media, in particular Facebook, shockingly few people here actually have a command of basic computer skills or programs. Essentially, the only reason most young people here have an email address these days is because they have to have one to access Facebook! Complete gaptek Indonesians are mostly over 50, but even for those born in the 1970s, there are not many people I know who can use word processing programs, spread sheets, have and maintain their own websites or blogs, or know how to use basic photo, audio or video editing software. I also know of people in this age range who don’t know how to create a Facebook account or use Whatsapp, and are consequently still only text messaging. It shocked me a few years back when my suggestion to a local official of connecting people in our hamlet via a communication app or page on Facebook was shunned because he “didn’t understand stuff like that”… and these are folks who are trusted by society with being in charge of “stuff”. Most government officials who have any power are over 40, and in fact mostly in their 50s. Considering that most of these people have few computer skills and don’t even understand how to use social media platforms or apps properly, we have a problem. My sister-in-law works in a government department and she said from Day One she was being asked to type emails for her seniors because they both didn’t know how to use MS Word or even how to type using all fingers! A consequence of this of course is that the people in power and who make decisions in this country are probably a lot less efficient that they should be. Being behind in technology threatens jobs – this is one of the reasons that Uber and Grab were so hated by taxi and freelance drivers in Bali – apart from the ease of ordering via an app, simply being a driver who can follow Google Maps means you’re ahead of your game. There are also relatively few websites in Indonesian which is an added obstacle to nonforeign language speakers who are technologically challenged. Indonesia’s public education system is notoriously primitive and there are no free government-funded computer courses for the public. Schools are trying to combat this with compulsory computer classes at elementary level that introduce computers from very basics: defining what a CPU or a mouse is for example. This will help in the long run, but in the meantime we are left with a frustrated, uneducated and gaptek society that has a lot of catching up to do.
