4 The Frugal Balinist Q Unplug with flip phone! For people who only need to call or text, use a flip phone which is smaller (fits easily

into pockets), is more durable, has a built in holster, is simple to operate with one hand, costs millions of rupiah less than a smartphone (even if it breaks or gets lost, it’s costs little to get a new one); batteries can last at least two days without being charged, replacing batteries is cheaper and faster; offers better cybersecurity (with no apps, they are less vulnerable to hacks); you don’t get constant notifications and emails demanding attention and you don’t always have to upgrade to new models. Samsung models online at OLX Indonesia cost as little as Rp150,000. To make the transition tolerable, wean yourself slowly. Hang on to your smartphone for a while but get rid of all your social-media apps. Without GPS-enabled maps, you’ll need to plan ahead by looking up directions and printing them out, writing them down or asking directions from smartphone users. Once you start using the hp lipat, you’ll need to relearn the irksome, clunky predictive-texting technology without the ease of a full keyboard. Prepare for frustrated parents and friends, people teasing you about being a technology hater or apologizing for using their smartphones in front of you, but you’ll be FREE!

Q Garden as Profit Centre. First plant banana trees in your garden. This all-important fruit must to be ready at any time for canang segehan offerings. Its leaves are used as umbrellas, to wrap food or are used as plates. It’s chopped up trunk is used for cow and pig food. Banana trees are biodegradable when you no longer have any use of its fruit or parts. Coconuts are another invaluable tree whose milk is used in soups and its santen coconut cream - a vital ingredient in many desserts - can make almost any dish immediately delicious; its wood is fashioned into planks, beams and knife and sickle handles and. The gods are also pleased with beautiful flowers like cempaka, tunjung/teratai. Kenanga trees (sandat in Balinese) belongs to the custard apple family and sprouts fragrant greenish yellow flowers. At Rp150,000/kg, this profitable flower used to make perfumes and incense fetches the highest price of any recyclables including brass. Frangipani (jepun) is another useful tree to grow in Bali. Once household yards were covered in frangipani petals but now they are dutifully collected. Widely used in the tourist industry, its yellow, white, red or pink petals cover baths in spas, are laid out on beds, used to beautify statuary and are found in women’s hair everywhere.

NC/BT/I-06 June 18

Q Household Hints. Digitized sensors, ambulatory blood pressure monitors, remote controlled ceiling fans and all

that other fancy electronic gadgetry crap are more trouble than they’re worth. *Starter tool kit: hammer, level, tape measure, LED flashlight, wrenches, rubber mallet, multi-bit screwdriver, hex wrenches, needle-nose pliers, utility knife, safety glasses and work gloves. Buy high quality because not only will the tool last longer, but it will also work better. *White wine removes red wine stains from clothing, carpets and upholstered furniture. Apply a small amount of the wine to a white or light-colored cloth or rag, then tamp at the red wine. Repeat as needed, adding more white wine to the cloth as you go. *Rid a hot water kettle of calcium buildup by heating it empty of water on the stove under a flame for 10 minutes; after it cools, shake all the loose calcium collected on the inside out.

Q Consumer Be Wary. According to its own consumer protection agency, Indonesians have little protection against false claims and hoaxes advertised by vendors of health and wellness products and alternative treatments that mislead the public. Questionable products may include therapeutic water bottles, therapy mattresses, high-tech wheelchairs, medical latex gloves, back support equipment or any new method or medication. Suspect also is information and claims endorsed by “health experts” or “doctors” that promise to alleviate certain serious illnesses and conditions. Testimonials from clients without any clear identification could also be completely made up.

C/Ho/G-11 April 18

Q Security Warnings. Don’t ever enter your email address in response to offers of romance, possibly fraudulent checks, gold buying, credit cards, business licenses, winning sweepstakes tickets or any invitation to pay for a vehicle registration certificate (STNK), proof of vehicle ownership or title (BPKB) or respond to any other authentic-looking document you get on your phone. *If you’re going away, install security cameras in your home which can be viewed from your phone or computer from anywhere in the world; it’s wise to also have a friend or maintenance person in Bali who may be alerted to investigate anything suspicious taking place during your absence. Q HealthWise. Eating unprocessed foods will help you be healthier and lessen your

risks of diseases; exercising, jogging and working out will be of no use if you consume large quantities of junk foods afterwards and may even worsen your health. *As you get fitter working out, increase the time and/or intensity of the sessions. A few short bouts per day are just as helpful as doing longer sessions and can feel more doable. Aim for 10-minute mini workouts 2-3 times daily. Go for a brisk walk at lunch and then repeat before dinner. *Late meals or nibbling on midnight snacks is a recipe for weight gain and metabolic trouble. Eat meals in a daily 8- to 10-hour window, taking your first bite in the morning and last bite early in the evening. *Contrary to the popular misconception, head lice are not attracted to dirty or unwashed hair but crawl into the hair from other objects. To get rid of lice, use Peditox, Rp6,000 per bottle at Kimia Farma. *The Heimlich maneuver has saved hundreds of thousands of people from choking to death since 1974. Illustrations on how to administer it are easily found on the Internet.

Q Buy the right size A/C unit. Window a/c units now can cool much more efficiently than those made a decade ago. A model that’s too small won’t cool adequately and one too large may cool too quickly and not remove enough humidity, leaving the room cold and clammy. Rough guidelines for the right size unit to buy: 100-300 sq. ft. (9-27.8 sq. m) home office or bedroom BTU 5,000-6,500 BTU; 250-400 sq. ft. (23-37 sq. m) master bedroom 7,000-8,500 BTU; large 350-650 sq. ft. (32.5 -60.3 m) living room 9,800-12,500 BTU. If the room is sunny, increase capacity by 10%. To maximize efficiency, use silicone filler or weather stripping all around perimeter of the unit.

Email : mano@mrtrusted.com www.mrtrusted.asia C/Ns/G-6 June 18

Q The Remarkable Ram Pump. A hydraulic ram pump is easy to build, cheap to install

and is easy to maintain and repair. As it’s driven by the movement of water from a spring or river, it requires no fuel. A one meter drop from a spring or river generates enough energy to drive piped water uphill for about 20 meters. A ten meter drop or an array of ten systems will raise water 100 meters. For a total investment of Rp3 million rupiah, your residence or village has access to an abundant and clean source of water. For plans, videos and instructions, go to: www.baliappropriatetechnology.org.

Q American Citizens Corner. Voting in this all-important upcoming mid-term election is fast (5-10 minutes) and straight-forward if you follow a few simple steps. First request a ballot by using a mobile-friendly application on your phone. Go straight to www.VoteFromAbroad. org, answer the questions, print out the form they generate, sign it, and send it in per instructions. If you have any questions, the Am-In team at www.AmericansInIndonesia.org/vote is ready to help. Please send your budget ideas, bargain deals and money saving tips to pakbill2003@yahoo.com. Join AquaMarineDive Today to See the Sunfish at Play! It’s official! The Sunfish are out to play and now is the time to take a trip with AquaMarine Dive Bali to witness the magnificently weird but wonderful Mola-Mola ( Ocean Sunfish) in their natural habitat. Sunfish Sighting Season is an annual highlight for Bali’s divers and international visitors and AquaMarine is delighted to launch their 2018 MM Day Trips & Safaris Special Offers.

Despite being so big, Mola-Mola are actually quite difficult to find! Therefore, every day during Sunfish Season, between one and three of AquaMarine’s custom built dive boats and guides head out in search of them. AMDive Guides have learned to be very secretive about where they see them however the most likely locations are around the offshore island of Nusa Penida and outside Padangbai and Candidasa on Bali’s East coast. There have also been rare early morning sightings on the USAT Liberty shipwreck in Tulamben Bay. Everyone joining a Mola-Mola Bali Spotting Trip with AquaMarine

Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.

(bar humans), Molas won’t come close to the reef and the schools of fishes waiting to clean them if they don’t feel safe. Therefore, if you see a Mola-Mola or your AquaMarine Dive Guide spots one, Just. Stop. Moving!

Mola-Mola are the world’s heaviest bony fish, reaching up to 1,000kg, and they can have 300 million eggs which make them busy mamas indeed! Their two long dorsal fins mean Mola-Mola can reach 3.5m in height but, though they have rounded bodies, they are very narrow when seen from front to back (incidentally, ’mola’ is Latin for ‘millstone’). Their closest relatives are pufferfish, porcupinefish and filefish. Ocean Sunfish eat jellyfish (in huge quantities) thus unfortunately plastic bags pose a big hazard to Mola-Mola and to turtles, for similar reasons. The experts at AquaMarine believe Mola-Mola are in Bali’s waters year round (recorded as deep as 360m), however they generally only rise up to recreational diving depths from July to mid-November. Because Mola-Mola suffer from up to 40 kinds of external parasites which require removal, they drift up in the incredibly cold, but very fertile, upwelling from the 3.5km deep Bali Trough off the island’s southern coast, to get cleaned (clever fish!) thus, how we are able to see them stationary for any length of time.

If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you!

Divers need to stay extremely still, close to the reef to let the fish come nearer, then wait for them to settle down. Once a Mola finds a place to get cleaned, it tips 45 degrees upwards, and often slightly sideways, seemingly going into a “zone”. I guess it’s like a ‘fishy massage’ of sorts! Once this happens, you and your group, rather than the Molas, will be the ones to depart first … maximum bottom time … air supply … and the water can be very cold!

is required to sign their ‘MM Code of Conduct’. That aside, expect to be in awe as you witness the behaviour of these curious creatures and watch the variety of fish that play particular roles in cleaning Mola-Mola: Bannerfishes are those we see waiting in great swarms for the Molas and they concentrate on the body. Butterflyfishes focus (no pun intended) on cleaning the eyes, Emperor angelfishes clean the dorsal fins and Cleaner wrasses come out from the reef to clean in and around the mouth and gills. It’s mother nature’s maintenance program for the Molas!

PS: We’ll let you in on a little secret – sssssshhh! Here in Bali we actually have Mola Ramsayi rather than Mola-Mola, but the latter’s much easier to say and it’s recognised Bali-wide. Check out AquaMarine Dive’s 2018 Special Offers for Mola Mola & Manta Ray Diving in Bali: 2018 Mola Mola Day Trip: 3 dives for the price of 2; free full rental gear.2018 Mola Mola Day Safari: 2 days / 1 nights / 6 dives; free full rental gear and accommodation at The Watergarden Hotel & Spa, Candidasa www.AquaMarineDiving.com/specials/mola-mola-dive-tripspecial info@AquaMarineDiving.com | +62 361 4738 020

Fertilizing the Garden ‘Dear Dr. Kris, I would like to ask you about fertilizer available in Bali. A few days ago, we moved a few 5m-high palm trees from the area near our pond to the other part of our garden as their roots had caused the pond to leak. I wonder if they need fertiliser to settle in their new environment. Could recommend any fertilizer which can be found at roadside nurseries or gardening shops in Bali. Thank you very much in advance. Warmly, Sawako’ Palms or any plant for that matter will do well with nutritional supplementation to ease the transplant shock and promote new growth in its new location. Palms require manganese (Mn) and potassium (K) in a higher ratio than most other plants, a deficiency in either will cause yellowing or premature death of the fronds and a generally unhealthy plant more susceptible to pests and disease.

nurseries. There are specialist lawn and palm outlets along Jalan Hayam Wuruk/ Jalan Hang Tuah - between Renon and Sanur. Fish emulsion is another good general purpose organic natural fertiliser suitable for palms, lawns, flowers, fruit and vegetables that can be bought at most large hardware/garden stores. Fish emulsion is a liquid fertilizer concentrate made from the by-products of the fish oil industry - generally mix about one capful per litre of water, and then apply direct to the garden with a watering can. This is the easiest and most cost-effective way to fertilize for the average garden in my opinion. Always follow the instructions on the label of any fertilizer, and never add more than advised.

Fertilizers - How to use them and which ones are best?

You can find these articles at The Bali Advertiser website with the links provided below https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/foraging/ https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/nutrient-soup-sea-minerals/

In my opinion the best fertilizer starts with plain old organic compost, otherwise fish emulsion or seaweed kelp meal. Organic fertilizers are preferable because they feed the soil, the bacteria and other microflora that plants have evolved to depend on. Chemical fertilizers do not provide this important aspect. Organic fertilizer improves the soil over time whereas chemical ones have been shown to deplete the soil over time. Healthy soil is essentially food for the garden and as such is the key factor for procuring a beautiful greenspace! The easiest most beneficial thing to do is to incorporate natural compost into the soil by forking it in or top dressing it over the soil surface then watering in. You can usually buy 10- 20L bags from most small nurseries in Bali. Just walk in and ask for ‘kompos’ otherwise you can order it in anything from the trailer right up to the truckload if need be - the same goes for regular garden soil of various grades. When re-doing a lawn for example it is much more cost-effective ordering by the trailer load and delivery is usually free. Nurseries around the Denpasar area will often have ‘kompos’ advertised on a small placard placed at the front entrance visible from the road, but even if it isn’t advertised even the smallest nurseries stock it, all you need to do is ask. Another option is to use a specialized palm fertiliser which will have the correct ratios of the elements needed, specifically Potassium -K, and Magnesium -Mn. Never use lawn feed or nitrogen (N) rich fertilizer on palms. Ace hardware, Mitra 10 and the other home depot/renovation style centres stock various types of specialist chemical fertilizer product categories, from lawn fertilisers to flowers, palms and fruit and vegetable specific. If any confusion arises always consult the label, ideally for palms look for a NPK ratio of around 8-4-12 with magnesium at a minimum of 4%. If you’d like to buy chemical fertilizers in bulk at better prices then the hardware store, ask around at the roadside

for the garden is a homemade seaweed fertiliser. For ongoing maintenance of your soil nutrients and trace elements collect washed up seaweed at the beach when you see it, it is an invaluable resource for the soil. You can either incorporate it directly into the soil or otherwise make a seaweed tea by infusing water with seaweed. Collect a small bag of seaweed, kelp or other marine plants that have washed up on the beach at low tide. Put it into a large container full of water, an old bin usually works well - then cover and leave to brew for a week or two in full sun. When the water has turned a dark brown colour, you have the seaweed tea. Simply pour it around the garden with a watering can. Typical ocean kelp provides 70 elements and a wide variety of plant growth hormones, it makes plants healthier and stronger, along with increased disease resistance. I have written previous articles on the joys of foraging seaweed for the garden where you can get a more in-depth insight into the science behind it.

A problem with chemical fertilizers is that it is easy to over fertilize, in which case the roots of the plants can be burnt resulting in a dead plant, otherwise there could be too much new leafy growth at the expense of flowering. Chemical fertilizers are absorbed by the plants yet provide no net positive effect on the soil, they create soil salt imbalances and destroy beneficial organisms within the soil. Once you’re hooked on the chemicals they become addictive and the downward spiral begins, modern day commercial farming is the poster child for this phenomenon - over the long-term crops experience lower nutritional content, diminishing returns and are more susceptible to failure. The chemicals also pollute the groundwater that runs from the farm or garden back into the river system, resulting in higher nitrate and phosphate residues, which can then cause excessive algal growth and choke entire river systems something I’ve seen plenty of times over the years whether in Denpasar or out in the countryside. Sometimes it’s gotten that bad it’s turned into a mining operation, bringing in the excavators, front end loaders and dump-trucks to remove the masses of algae that has choked the ecosystem, killed the aquatic life and literally brought the river to a standstill. Another favourite natural all round general purpose fertilizer

If you’re not a beach person and can’t find seaweed kelp fertilizer at the shops you can easily buy it online and have it sent to you, search for ‘kelp meal’. If your family goes through a lot of bananas as mine does try incorporating the peels into the soil around the base of the trees to provide a slow release form of potassium an essential nutrient for healthy palms, they also contain small amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium. I recommend natural fertilisers such compost, seaweed/kelp or fish emulsion fertilizers because they are natural, abundant in trace elements and have positive effects on the soil microflora - the building blocks of the garden. Natural fertilizers are generally safer in terms of over doing it, and in combination with regular composting should eliminate the need for chemical fertilizer in the garden over time. If you’re a gardener in Indonesia I suggest that you add the word ‘kompos’ to your vocabulary - probably one of the easiest Indonesian words to learn and definitely the most beneficial one for your garden!

13 Tri Sutrisna: Bali’s Heritage Foods

Tri Sutrisna grew up in a Balinese compound in a small village in Gianyar. After attending Campuan College in 2013, he went direct into a food design traineeship where he developed an interest in local foods and food design skills at a farm cooperative, serving as a liaison between farmers and executive chefs and resort owners. Tri has worked in many levels of food production, from driving, teaching, cleaning chicken/pig/beef carcasses to marketing, evaluating feed programs, experimental laboratory work and computer design. In 2017, Tri become CEO of Wanaprasta, a company that produces farm-based wilderness foods. Why is it important to develop Indonesia’s local foods? To give confidence to our own voice and tasting palate. To provide greater opportunities for young Indonesians to be seen as leaders rather than as service staff. To make domestic consumers realize the incredible diversity of their own flora and fauna. I’m a strong believer in Indonesia being its own food design leader, not just the supplier of raw materials. Indonesia has amazing food resources, many of them under used. What are some prime examples? There are so many! New heritage varieties of meats, vegetables and fruits are almost endless. Coffee, cocoa, grains and spices are all untapped and waiting. Just this year we released a completely new kind of peppercorn that is much like a slightly larger poppy seed. It will revolutionize the way peppercorns can be used. Bread makers are going to go nuts over this new spice. What is a food designer’s job? To take existing farm foods and reinterpret them for consumers. For instance, cocoa becomes fermented beans, then chocolate. Pigs become pork, then becomes charcuterie and ultimately becomes capicola, bacon or salami. Milk becomes curd, which then becomes cheese. Fermentation is one of the key tools, but it also involves the nurturing of a tasting palate and the discipline to experiment continuously. In modern parlance, you could say that I’m a food lab nutty professor/chef. What makes your farming operation different from others in Bali? For meat and dairy there is no other operation similar to ours. In everything we do we try to source, grow and nurture through our farm cooperatives and nearby wild spaces. We prioritize farming in a three-tier income stream that’s rooted in non-chemical commercial farming that is not unlike a permaculture system. We earn income from cropping, e.g. mango trees (high), shrubs/vines e.g. vanilla (medium), animals e.g. pigs/chickens (low) in a natural partnership. We only farm animals that roam freely and live on a pastured diet. This is a commitment to quality as well as to organic farming that includes animal welfare as a key concern. How does the pastured system work? Our commitment is to have our animals outdoors in natural conditions with access to plants and other natural foods found in pasture land. The animals source their own food independently. It’s a bit like duplicating the nomad/shepherd system of keeping animals on the move to find fresh pasture rather than standing in their own excrement in a shed as is the case in so-called “free-range” operations. With free roaming animals, our role is simply to supplement the animals’ dietary needs and keep them as content as possible. Aren’t free range animals also well-treated? The free-range concept is often abused by factory systems. The term implies that animal care is of great concern. But actually factory or intensive meat food production are inherently abusive of animals and customers. It goes completely against the natural system of planet earth and only exists because we have found scientific ways of efficiently growing animals in nightmarish conditions. The pastured method is totally removed from the factory system of meat production. We use the term pastured to emphasis that our animals eat fresh grass and live in a humane and caring environment.

intensely industrial. For us, getting back to a natural system that existed in the prechemical era is more important than seeking a certification process that accepts unnatural factory methods of meat and dairy farming. We have organic certification in regard to our milk operations but we don’t usually mention it because it’s relatively meaningless. Our commitment to raising pastured cattle aspires to a higher standard. At the moment, there is no pastured organic certification. Hopefully we can change that. Do you grow your chickens differently? Not really. We grow our chickens in forest and pasture, allowing them to run around and harvest their own insects, lizards and greens. We also provide them with a supplementary meal from ground larvae protein, forest greens, fruits and pollard just in case they need more dietary support. We do this for both meat birds and the egg birds. There are no such thing as organic eggs if the layers aren’t being pastured outdoors. We don’t add any antibiotics, which they don’t need anyway as they ingest chlorophyll from the plants they eat. Our chickens are constantly moving. You won’t find them standing in a wasteland of their own excrement as in most ‘free range’ or ‘organic’ commercial operations. They are well and truly pastured.

If You Have a Problem with.....

How do you grow your pigs? Our pigs are not the typical Landrace variety designed in Denmark for high rates of growth and reproduction. Our heritage bangkal hitam pigs are not grown in concrete boxes. They are designed to live naturally with and in nature and thrive under those conditions. They roam in large enclosures where they are fed a seasonal diet of fruits. The most plentiful fruit season is mango; the shortest season is mangosteen. By contrast, the white Landrace faces great difficulties living in natural organic conditions. To grow the Landrace in that environment you’ll need to take shortcuts with artificial feed support. Thus the Landrace pig tastes like cardboard in comparison to delicious meat from our heritage breed. Our pigs give us gourmet sausages, bacons, hams and the world’s only mango-fed charcuterie (cold meats). We make this specialized charcuterie in this small little village north of Ubud. It feels good to produce something nobody else can!

What makes your cheese different from commercial cheeses? We are the only fully indigenous cheesemaker in Indonesia. We have achieved this by developing our own dairy cooperative and cheese making methods. We are small scale which enables us to control our operation in ways commercial operators are not able to. Being small and farm-based rather than commercially driven makes it easier for us to develop a 100% indigenous cheese which is unique and identifiably Indonesian. For over six years we have developed our own milk, molds and penicillin strains that have evolved in the warmer conditions of Bali. We also use sustainable fermenting methods, such as our use of durian as a fermenting medium, that is specially adapted to the Indonesian tropics. No other dairy farmers work in this way in Indonesia because they are focused on making facsimiles of European cheeses for the tourist industry. We deliberately turned our back on this approach.

LEARNING, RENEWING AND LEADING BY EXAMPLE! It is the obligation of the leader, to continually renew himself, in order to renew the people, by his example (Confucious). Leadership is about learning to lead and continually updating oneself professionally, in order to set a good example. This is the job of the President, Rotary Club Bali Nusa Dua and the Board. Handover Dinner – Ayoyda Resort, Nusa Dua, Bali Edward Naus, President RCBND 2017-2018 handed over the leadership to the new President RCBND 2018-2019, Hugh Brown and Board members on Friday, 20th July, 2018. Edward led the Board and fellow Rotarians through a successful year, with some significant achievements. It was a cool, calm Bali night at the Ayoyda Resort, Nusa Dua. The trees sparkled like brilliant diamonds, as many guests chatted and enjoyed their dinner, in a garden setting near the pool. Music provided by a live band added to an enchanting evening. I recall Edward Naus saying something meaningful about Confucious and leadership, as he handed over to the incoming President Hugh Brown and new Board. A valuable Global Grant was awarded and RCBND is working on its many varied charities, with a forthcoming Golf Tournament in September 2018, to help fund its projects. Global Grant: Cleft Palate Operations The RCBND Global Grant took many months to prepare and significant reviews were carried out by various organisations, to ensure the funds would meet the objectives of its target group: Indonesian people requiring Cleft Palate operations. As the amount being sought was just over USD $130,000 (Global Grant 1864795), the reviews were even more thorough. Most of the work was completed by Karl Schmelzer,

Treasurer of RCBND, in consultation with the Board and its Secretary, Wes Nieman, the original initiator of the Cleft Palate Project, since 1994. A cleft is a gap on the lip or in the roof of the mouth (palate), that has not closed since pregnancy. It is estimated that every three minutes, a child is born somewhere in the world, with either a cleft lip or palate and sometimes both. This is about one in 700 live births. Depending on the type and severity, a cleft palate can create serious health issues if not corrected. Babies often have difficulty with feeding, which in some parts of the world, can lead to malnutrition or even death. Ear infections are another common concern because recurring ear infections can lead to hearing loss. Left untreated, cleft palates impair: dental development, speech and language development, not to mention the social stigma, to which children are victims. Since 1994 RCBND has not only provided the initial cleft lip or palate repair for some 1650 children and adults, but has also funded on-going and follow-up treatment, including bone graft surgery to close the palate as need. All treatment is free of charge. Further Wes explained to me, that whilst a significant difference can be noted between the before and after photographs of children who have had cleft palate operations, adults may experience additional problems post-surgery. These include issues associated with the complexities of identity and other emotional needs. They may in fact, decide not to proceed.

C/Ho/G-20 June 18

To continue this vital work (on the Cleft Palate Project) RCBND, together with RC Carnegie-Collier and District 7300 (USA), Rotary Clubs Kaufbeuren-Ostallgau, Koln-Kapitol and Mulheim-Ruhr-Uhlenhost (Germany) as well as individual donors, received $USD130,906.00. This grant will allow RCBND to perform as many as 180 cleft lip and palate operations, as well as dental examinations and basic treatment to older children over the next two years. Working with Yayasan Kolewa, RCBND will be able to reach out to new remote areas throughout NTT (East Nusa Tenggara), for example: Sumba, Flores, West Timor and Rote to identify and help children, that have until now gone untreated. Annual Charity Golf Tournament The Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua will hold their annual charity golf tournament on the 8th September at the Bali National Golf Course. This is the 18th running event, in support of some very worthwhile charities, that help to improve the lives of Balinese people. The RCBND is looking forward to welcoming you to an excellent day’s golf, followed by a wonderful presentation dinner. Please look out for further information about this exciting event in the “Bali Advertiser.” Thank you A special thank you to the Ayoyda Resort for providing such a wonderful venue and dinner for RCBND’s handover dinner. Thank you also, to all Rotarians and friends who supported RCBND, by attending the dinner. HELP LOMBOK NEIGHBOURS As always, emergencies come first! The Bali not-for-profit community has set support programs in motion to help government response to the massive earthquakes rocking Lombok this month. In Bali, the aftershocks have been frightening for all of us; it’s hard to picture how terrifying is for the hundreds of thousands of impoverished villagers whose tiny, poorly built homes have shattered around them all across Lombok island. Early quakes hit North Lombok regency, while the biggest (12 over 4.8, biggest 6.9 at time of writing, may it remain the worst of them!) have ravaged across the island. Communities in many areas – such as tourist spot Senggigi, where villages on the western side of the road are badly damaged - are living outside in the hills above the town, to avoid the possibility of aftershocks. For more info, contact disaster specialist yayasan IDEP. You can donate to help provide the basic needs of evacuees, via fundrazr.com and kitabisa.com. Or assist four shattered Senggigi families, whom I have supported for many years, via http://www.gofundme.com/supportmy-lombok-friends. JAKARTA REBELS TRAINING Every capital city has rebellious teens, pushing the boundaries in various unsuitable directions, for want of the necessary experience to support their untutored attempts at leadership. So Ubud-based youth worker and Psychodrama master, Mario Cossa, returns regularly to the US to run training programs for troubled youth in schools and prison settings, including the Safe Schools Ambassadors Program, where his powerful and energising methods have helped many teens and young adults take confident steps on a socially useful path. He also runs train-the-trainer workshops, and is widely recognised for empowering workers in this vital and challenging field. Later this year, Mario flies to Jakarta, where he will offer those decades of practical knowledge and expertise to professionals working with young people as counsellors, therapists, educators and youth group facilitators. It will be a “once in a lifetime” experience. The intensive three-day workshop will explore the theory, philosophy, and practice of action techniques such as psychodrama, sociodrama, and drama therapy with adolescent groups. The workshop will be held midDecember; for dates, venue and other info, and to register, email cossa@att.net. COMPOST VERSUS WASTE The waste pollution piles up around Bali, and community awareness campaigns won’t work without an effective collection system. So let’s support Gianyar Waste Recovery Project and its environmentally friendly waste treatment program. One of Temisi’s main goals is to help us create a beautiful, healthy, and comfortable environment for future generations and ourselves. The project’s Temesi Recycling Program takes in 42 tons of biodegradable material daily, processing it into 16 tons of good quality compost through an ISO 9000 Quality System. Helping with erosion control and containing no pathogens or weed seeds, Temesi Compost is suitable for hotels, villa and home gardens, paddy fields, vegetable and fruit plantations and golf courses, and for the restoration of poor soils. Healthy soil contains 10% biodegradable material, but 50% of Indonesia’s 8 million hectares of agricultural

Keep your eyes open for performances by this powerful musical duo, as they travel around the island for the launch of their first album, Drumology. BetelNut, one of Ubud’s best event venues, hosted the energetic pair for a great evening of music and dance last month, and will definitely bring them back again soon.

The Rhythm Rebels are Reza Achman on drums and Rizal Abdulhadi on the didgeridoo, both based in Ubud. Their eclectic rhythms are an irresistible, raw combination of different sounds including drum & bass, dubstep, jungle and deep house. They use primarily organic instruments – real drum kits, didgeridoo for bass and synthesizer sound, trutruka for brass sections, a one-string bamboo bass, and lots more. THE UNIVERSE HAS YOUR BACK! “Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no either way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.” Albert Einstein Extraordinary Ubud-based healer Lela Thomas - Reiki Master teacher, Eternal Breath facilitator, Access Consciousness facilitator - has based her life in Ubud since 2002, every year going back to the States for a couple of months, to support her friends and clients from before her Bali move. This month and next she’s leading a series of “Future Leaders: Changing Consciousness” workshops in Indiana, Kentucky, New York, and will return to Bali to run similar sessions here, in mid-October. Drawing on Albert Einstein’s statement, Lela says we all have the capacity to create and support whatever we choose. So the important thing is to make the most of those choices. Lela says her workshops are designed to ensure that we are making choices that support and allow us to keep open to - and offering energy towards - contributing to all life. Update

Cocoon, Jln. Double Six at Blue Ocean Beach, Legian, is always the innovator. They are the market leader and have just celebrated their 8th anniversary, a good record for a Bali beach club. At Cocoon, they have totally revamped their menu and with great deals from suppliers have actually reduced their prices for many dishes. Furthermore they have eradicated one of the biggest bugbears for tourists, all prices for food and drinks are now nett, inclusive of tax and service. This often causes much confusion to Bali tourists in general and tourists from Australia in particular where it is illegal to add any extra charge, the price shown on the menu must be the full amount. Just a snack with a drink or two [cocktails from Rp.85,000 nett] from their Grazing Menu is perfect. Tapas, mostly at Rp.45,000 Nett each; Moroccan Spiced Chicken Wings or Vegetarian Spring Rolls [4 of each], Chicken or Crispy Pork Dumplings, great Steam Buns stuffed with roasted pork, with cucumber and pear-hoisin sauce. Share a few 30 cm pizzas, all at 90,000 or less. The full dining option is also there, fine dining quality at budget prices. Start with Salt & Pepper Calamari or old faithful, Prawn Cocktail. As the GM is the boy from Lygon Street [Melbourne’s little Italy] the pastas are 100% traditional. Home made actually means ‘on the premises’ not at someone else’s home. I like the Fettucine Lamb [big chunks of real lamb]. Mains include Lamb Shank, Steaks, Chicken, Fish and Roast Duck….even a simple, but perfect, Beer-Battered Fish & Fat Chips. The very traditional and authentic Italian Parmigiana is about to be joined by an old favourte Saltimbocca, left off the new menu but about to return by popular demand. As always, all menu items that are vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free are so marked. This must be the best value in Bali, snack by the pool, dine ‘al fresco’ on the terrace or inside in the so comfortable restaurant. Steaks [pictured] are still one of the most popular dishes here.

TEK KROTEK, on Jln Raya Mas, is very popular with all of my local Bali village friends. Even adventurous foreigners venture there for spicy food. Their menu does not lie, it is titled “Chicken Firehot”. One of the most popular dishes is spicy chicken pieces served on noodles, Mie Tek Krotek. A small, friendly place and very, very cheap with mains from Rp.15,000.

Taco Casa keeps on spreading its wings. Now at Jln. Batu Mejan, Canggu with its popular Cal-Mex, Tex-mex offerings. No doubt that will be yet another success story? Curry in Bali is the latest major restaurant to open an outlet in the Ubud Food Court, at Jln., Sukma Kasuma, Tebasaya. Unlike most Indian restaurants in Bali, they mostly offer food from the south rather than from the north, from the Malay-speaking area of Kerala. on India’s Malabar coast, although also a selection of Northern dishes such as a few Tandoori ones. Snack on Samosa’s [veg or chicken] and Pakhora’s, soft curries from Kerala, with Malabar spices imported from India. Chicken and beef curries. The Fish Molee is cooked in coconut milk turmeric and curry leaves, as well there is a red curry option. Also many vegetarian and even Vegan dishes.

Daily Baguette offers daily home/villa delivery in Ubud, Sanur and other areas [depending on the order value] for breads, cakes, pastries and those early morning croissants. However all orders must be placed by 8.00 p.m.the previous night and only via their website [www.dailybaguette.com]. Small minimum size orders apply. The only exception is for the sourdough bread which must be ordered two days in advance.

Berawa’s Kitchen is Canggu’s classy food court Jln. Raya Semat. With outlets selling Pizza, Indian, Burgers, Crepes and a variety of other dishes. Snacks and meals, local and international in a pleasant garden setting. The Shore is a restaurant that is actually …on the shore. The latest totally redeveloped part of the old Gand Nikko Hotel at Nusa Dua, now a Hilton Resort. The three level restaurant actually has tables on the edge of the beach, on ‘the shore’ and presents a wide variety of seafood dishes in that perfect setting masterminded by their well-travelled Exec. Chef Clinton Webber.

Soft, Fragrant Curries! Curry in Bali offers many wonderful dishes from India’s southern coastal city of Kerala, on the Malabar coast, they are so different to the curries from other regions in India. They use a whole different range of spices, the result is almost delicate. A great example of Kerala cuisine is to drop in to Curry in Bali for breakfast [or just a snack] and order their Kerala special, Poori, a very light wholewheat unleavened flat puffy bread which is served with a delicate potato curry which you spoon into it, fold and eat, sublime! I overheard an Indian guest nearby who was also enjoying the same dish say…just like my mother makes… could not be any more traditional than that! Kerala is known for it’s spices and that is reflected in its curries which are quite unique. The main ones that are used are cinnamon, nutmeg skin, star anise, cloves, cardamom, and black pepper. Also available for breakfast is a Masala Omelette, with tomato, onion and green chillies, now that is different! CIB also offers Soups [chicken and a creamy seafood of prawn and fish] and Salads [Chicken Tikka and Tandoori Prawn]. One of the best examples of Kerala cuisine is their Kerala Beef Fry. It is rare to see beef on an Indian menu but then everything about Kerala is different to the rest of India. There is also a Fish Fry. However, Curry in Bali also offers dishes from elsewhere in India, not just from the south, in fact all of the classics are here. Entrees or just snack time is Somosa or Pakora time, or

QUICK REVIEW even a Dosa or two. Worldwide, wherever I am, my all time favourite anytime snack is a Vegetarian Samosa, stuffed with potatoes and peas inside that special crumbly pastry. The Samosas here can be vegetarian, chicken or mutton [all mutton dishes at CIB are in fact local goat meat, which they explain on their menu].

Restaurant

: Curry in Bali.

Address

: Jln. The Bypass Ngurah Rai 95, Sanur.

Telephone

: 938.1253

Open

: 08.00 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. daily.

Non-smoking Area : Yes Other options here include Vegetable Rolls, a very soft naan rolled around raw slices of onion and capsicum, served with mint chutney. There is also a Chicken Roll. Uttapam is a southern version of the Dosa, but it is a thick pancake unlike the thin crisp crepe-like dosa. Something very different for Bali, though I never understand why, is Chicken Livers, once more a southern special, marinated in spices before being pan fried with onions and tomatoes. The Tandoori Chicken Tikka is definitely borrowed from northern neighbours as are the other Tandoori offerings [prawns, fish] . The Roast Duck is cooked on the bone, Asian style, as it supposedly increases the flavour.

Smoking Area

: Yes

Parking

: Off-road, at front.

Price

: Rp. 400,000 for two [+ drinks]

Credit Cards

: All major cards.

Food

: Indian [specialising in southern dishes].

Wine

: Limited.

Service

: Excellent.

Atmosphere

: Bright and breezy.

Overall

: Wonderful tastes!

Mains are of the north and south. Heading the list are all time favourites Butter Chicken [in a buttered tomato and cashew nut curry], Chicken Tikka Masala [tandoori chicken sautéed with onions, tomato and cashews], and from the south; a Chicken Breast in Malabar spices. The Rogan Josh also uses goat meat for flavour. The Mutton [goat] Kheema Mutter combines minced meat with green peas, green chillies and a range of spices. There are a wide selecton of other prawn, fish, and chicken curries. Top of the range are two very thick intense flavoursome curries for both the Lobster and Crab dishes [pictured]. A selection of rice dishes [Jeera, with cumin, Palao, with peas and vegetables, and the special Kerala version] and Biriyanis [egg, vegetable, chicken, mutton, fish, beef, prawns], all served in a sealed pot with pickles. Curry in Bali is a very welcome addition to the Bali dining scene, once again introducing more new and different taste sensations in a very well managed operation.

MPH Tackles Bali’s Mounting Waste Problem by Anita at the Village Level According to the World Bank’s global review of solid waste management, 62 percent of Indonesia’s household waste is organic, and convertible into compost, and the rest consists of paper, plastic, glass and metal, most of which can be repurposed. Despite this, unprocessed waste continues to flood Bali’s poorly-managed landfill sites, waterways and oceans, or is simply burned by the roadside. While, Bali is still in the beginning phases of setting up a waste disposal system and recycling facilities, a group of like-minded individuals have developed the MPH Circular Approach to help kickstart waste management projects around the island. The MPH approach (MPH stands for Merah, Putih, Hijau or Red, White, Green) endeavours to implement a color-coded waste separation and recycling strategy at the village level—this being in line with the 2008 waste management laws that give villages and provinces the authority to develop and run their own waste management infrastructure. Founded in 2016, the MPH project selected Desa Pererenan in Southwest Bali as its showcase village. Since then, the organization has been working with the local community in the area to implement a waste separation plan and build recycling infrastructure, a strategy that will hopefully be replicated in other villages around the island in the future. “Desa Pererenan has provided land and in return MPH has promised to donate 500 million Rupiah to build and operate a fully functional recycling and composting facility,” says Sean Nino, a waste management specialist and a staunch supporter of the project. “We are currently building the site and installing a forced aeration system for large scale composting. Plastic, metal, paper and glass are all sorted and sold to the recycling industry. The residue amounts to around ten to twenty percent, which is then taken by truck to the TPA Suwung dump.” Nino says that the biggest challenge the MPH project is facing is enforcing the waste management principles that have already been formulated by the law and environmental agencies in Indonesia. By working on the village level, MPH hopes to provide the tools to make waste management principles a reality within Balinese

communities. “Waste management requires a persistent, consistent and repetitive system to build and maintain trust over time,” he says. “The MPH approach will fund the first 6 -12 months of operations in each selected village before handing over the infrastructure to the community. We have raised the first 500 million for Pererenan through a fundraiser, individual donations and tourist resorts.”

While the MPH project is owned and managed by the community, up to date over 40 people have helped the endeavour with their knowledge and time as volunteers in areas such as engineering, software design, financial modeling, and data monitoring. And their commitment and hard work is clearly paying off. “We now have a set of guidelines, standard operating procedures, technical building designs, communication tools, and reporting and monitoring tools in the area of waste management.” Nino says. “Currently, the project also involves the Dojo coworking space, the environmental organization Pererenan Gumi Lestari, as well as two universities, namely TU Eindhoven and ITB.” The MPH approach bares multiple benefits for the local communities, a fact that Nino hopes will motivate villages to implement the project’s waste separation and management strategy. Not only does the approach save on the cost of trucking waste to landfills and reduces CO2, but it also creates jobs for local villagers who are employed to collect waste, sort it and ensure that it is recycled or composted. While dry waste such as plastic, paper, glass and metal can be sold to the recycling industry, wet waste such as kitchen scraps is usually composted. “Organic waste can be transformed into compost, bagged and sold to farmers,” Nino says. “This means that it eventually ends up in the ground to rehabilitate the soil and nourish new plants.”

While MPH is a kickstarter that aims to get waste management infrastructure and strategy in motion within Balinese communities, these will eventually be handed over as village-owned businesses called BUMDes (Badan Usaha Milik Desa). The MPH can provide the knowhow, infrastructure and support to the local villages, but ultimately it will be up to the communities themselves to ensure that the project is a success. Nino believes that a sense of ownership will make the villagers more motivated to participate in the project. “The Balinese community has been very open to waste management solutions,” he says. “Waste management involves and touches every single person. Most people tend to be lazy and forgetful when it comes to the environment. This is why MPH follows a community approach. The community is capable of enforcing simple rules. Waste separation is the key to successful waste management and I believe that it is best dealt with at a community level.” Nino hope that the MPH project in Pererenan will achieve sustainability by the end of the year, and eventually allow the community to sort and process 90 percent of their waste. Once fully set up, the aim is to replicate the model in villages across the island, ensuring that the value crated by efficient waste management stays within each community. “We are collaborating with Made Kusuma in Desa Baturiti and also working with Komang Cahyendra in Desa Sayan. Melinggih Kelod, Seseh and Nyanyi are also showing interest,” Nino says. “We would love to support and kickstart a total of 50 village projects over the next five years.” To find out more about the MPH project or donate visit: http://mph-bali.org/en/about-us/

DISASTER READY....Don’t Be Scared, Be Prepared! Everywhere you go this week you will hear the word “earthquake” mentioned more than several times. General banter such as “did you feel it? Where were you?” “Isn’t it terrible?….what if it happened again?… stronger..” etc. Well? What if? Are you ready? The entire archipelago that is Indonesia sits on a major fault line, that leaves us wide open for quakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunami. Along with flood, fire and the occasional risk of terrorism, I think that gives us more than valid reason to make ourselves well prepared for what could very well happen. Let’s face it, we need to be responsible for ourselves and our families. This takes the burden off retrieval and rescue of those that are affected worse than we are. WATER Dehydration and disease from dirty water is one of the foremost concerns following a major disaster. You should prepare a three-day supply of water for everyone in your home. Water (dual-bucket style Navaza Water Filters) filtration systems are excellent and inexpensive. The Red Cross recommends one gallon (4 liters) per person per day, however you should be able to survive on about 6-8 glasses of water a day and let’s face it we are talking “survival” here! Store the water in opaque plastic containers (sealed 4 liter Aqua bottles are ideal). Change this water every six months. It is also worth keeping a supply of water purification tablets (not available here in Bali). You can also boil well water if you have the facilities; even urine can be used in a life / death situation! Don’t forget to use other water sources such as coconuts.

You will fare much better if you add re-hydration salts or electrolytes to your water. Keep sachets of oralyte (2 per person per day) in your emergency supplies. FOOD Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits & vegetables. Canned juices, milk. High energy foods such as dried fruit, crackers, granola bars, unsalted nuts (that will not increase thirst). Vitamins Foods for infants, elderly, persons with special dietary needs. Be aware that rice & pasta need to be cooked which means that you will need both water and heating, so it is not a good idea to rely on these as your first line source of emergency food supplies. FIRST AID KIT Sterile adhesive bandages in assorted sizes Assorted sizes of safety pins Cleansing agent/soap/ wet-wipes. Triangular bandages Non-prescription drugs such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medicines. Broad spectrum antibiotics such as Amoxil. Various roller bandages Scissors ,Tweezers ,Needle Antiseptic - Betadine. Thermometer First aid manual. Special needs medication for your family e.g. asthma or diabetic supplies. OTHER HEALTH CONCERNS Always make sure that your family’s vaccines are up to date, especially for Tetanus, Typhoid, Hepatitis A as these diseases are rampant following disasters. (Cholera vaccine is no longer used). Make yourself aware of basic first aid measures. TOOLS AND SUPPLIES Battery-operated radio and extra batteries

Flashlight and extra batteries Non-electric can opener or a utility knife Pliers Tape Matches in a waterproof container Candles Aluminum foil Paper, pencil Needles, thread SANITATION Soap, liquid detergent Feminine supplies Plastic garbage bags and ties Plastic bucket with tight lid Household chlorine bleach DOCUMENTS Store family documents (passports, medical records etc.) in a waterproof bag or container where is easily accessible. It is also wise to store passport details / numbers on your person (e.g. in your cell phone memory, email attachment, cloud etc), should you need to evacuate the island.

26 Simple Pleasures & Moving House Forget Benoa.... here’s to the F1 Renon Circuit

After nearly 24 years in Sanur my wife and I moved to Renon and into another world. Like most long term residents we got stuck in a comfortable rut. During the first two years we relentlessly explored the island, circumnavigating and criss-crossing it, exploring small lanes into forests and up mountains, often as not leading to spectacular dead ends. Things settled down a bit after that, as they do, but we often trekked off for days and nights in Bali’s Far East and West. We especially delighted in East Bali and never gave a thought to driving up to Ubud or the bone-jarring ride down the ‘white road’ to Seminyak and beyond. I wouldn’t say driving was actually a pleasure in Bali back then. When we arrived the new by-pass was still being completed and the coast road out East was still a dream. Stuck behind a belching behemoth for hours on the old road East to Padangbai was no fun. A good solution was to drive late at night. That way we once made it from Sidemen to Pemuteran in a few hours. Back then you could get to the airport from Sanur in 20 minutes. It’s funny to think that within a few short years, on a bad day, it could take two hours, but now... its back to 20 minutes again. Around the turn of the century as the villafication of Bali gathered pace things changed. Mainly it was the traffic. By the end of the decade you really had to think if you wanted to make the trip up to Ubud or across to Seminyak. Most times, if you didn’t have to, you wouldn’t. With the advent of Grab and Go Jek we don’t bother with a car. Just call one when needed. I was happy as Larry tooling around Sanur on my push bike. We became classic expat Sanurians and just didn’t get around much any more. No matter how transculturally sophisticated we may think we are, most of us dwelling in the expatriate enclaves of Ubud, Sanur and Seminyak, will take for granted if not be unaware of the support bubble we’ve created around us and take it for granted. Take food for example. Like the majority of people everywhere, Asians have an unreconstructed love of sugar. Not so many expats, especially here in Bali, where we’re a pretty health conscious bunch and well aware that sugar is not our friend. We like our bread wholewheat, fresh and natural. We abhor those strange square white pasty blocks with a brown rind masquerading as sliced white bread and those sickeningly sweet aerated confections posing as patisserie. We need our soy milk and we want it none too sweet, and are quite discombobbed when we can’t find it. We like our quiche fresh and crumbly, not some greasy deflated hulk. I’ve gone off jam a bit recently and don’t even get me started on cheese, which is far too expensive and isn’t even real cheese..... and so on, on and on.

The area always looked interesting to me on the occasions I drove through it, what with the park and monument, its government buildings, banks and commercial head offices, grandiose mansions with those horrid chrome ballustrades but most of all it was the broad, tree-lined boulevards. I’m not sure why the Governor is so keen on the Benoa project and its Formula 1 race track when there’s a wonderfully scenic 6 kilometre race circuit already in place, starting at the pistol-packing soldier’s statue by the Plaza Renon roundabout going up Jalan Puputan, round the top end and back down the multi-lane rectangular one-way system and rejoining Jl. Puputan via Jl. Prof. Moh. Yamin. In fact the race already seems to be taking place on a daily basis; bit like a 24-hour Le Mans interruptus round here it is. Pedestrian or push-bike friendly, it is not. There are no traffic lights, few pedestrian crossings so faded as to be virtually invisible. No one pays them any attention to anyway. To cross you have to launch yourself out into a 4-lane highway at an appropriate moment and rely on the mercy and skill of the oncoming drivers not to hit you. And, having reached the divide, do it all again. Small wonder I’ve taken to referring to the main road as Jalan Suicide. At one vantage point, I now call the Frescobaldi Corner, after the Freshindo supermarket there, road markings are so confused they actually appear to direct two fast-moving oncoming traffic streams directly into each other. As for pedestrians, such noble thoroughfares would, you might think, have deserved broad pavements where citizens and visitors alike might promenade. Not a bit of it. What pavement there is, is broken and intermittent. Only in the immediate environs of the park and Puputan monument itself can pedestrians safely partake of all this civic grandeur. It’s a shame really, an opportunity lost, giving such a noble area over entirely to the combustion engine. None of which stops me. I’m on my bike pedalling around the back roads discovering my new borough. I funk it, dismount and use a pedestrian crossing when I get to Jl. Suicide, though. There are plenty of good coffee shops sprinkled round the area; Renon Plaza, thank heaven has a Papaya , there’s a large Popular Market on Hayam Wuruk and the store on Frescobaldi’s Corner pretty much cater to our needs. Plenty of other stores going down Jl. Hayam Wurukremain to be explored.

I still pedal in to Sanur to visit old haunts and buy the kind of expat items I can’t get in Renon, like the hard cheeses and pagnotta at Massimo‘s, Pita bread and tahini at the Pantry and suchlike. It takes me abot 30 minutes to bike in and I’ve become acquainted with the back roads between Renon and Sanur in a way I never was before. It’s interesting to see what passes for a green belt separating the two townships. Sometime as little as 250 metres I’d say, but still there – which I suppose is something. In the midst of which, one morning I was blessed with a fast-vanishing pastoral idyll, a magnificent full-on view of Mount Agung across the ricefields hardby a beautiful old temple atop an evil-smelling stream flowing gently past.

Fortunately for us, esconced as we are in our expat enclaves, we either don’t see or become inured to the expat premium we pay on most goods and services. That, or we flatter ourselves we have negotiated some special deal through our charm and acumen. Laundry is a great example. In Sanur we paid the norm, which was 3 times as much for a very indifferent service, un-ironed and poorly packed, compared to what we now pay from our These days we must grab simple pleasures where we can. new roost in Renon. Plenty of big houses round here, but Moving too, once done is salutary and brings compensating the Javanese and Balinese matrons of Renon know a pleasures. thing or two about value for money. So here we are, my wife and I plus cat, after a six-month sojourn in a chilly France very glad to be back in Bali. We holed up for a couple of months in a newly built and wellmanaged homestay in Sanur before moving into our new place. The new house is situated in one of those lanes off Jalan Raya Puputan not far from the park and monument.

Claiming Our Sovereignty

For Sale; Go pro 3 / many accessories / batteries etc …. WA +62 812 3614 4771. [020]

For many years I’ve heard people talk about sovereignty and its meaning. My logical brain understood it, but only recently

did my heart understand what this really means. Through a series of events which began with my trip to Canada in May, travels through Ecuador and then concluded in Toronto when I flew back home for my birthday, situations in my life began to unfold which showed me what sovereignty is. I began to see how certain people in my life relied too much on me — they seemed to be pulling at my energy, but as I looked more closely, I realized that I was allowing this. There was no one to blame; not even myself. As a naturally giver this has been a never ending story, although all that’s changing now. I have finally created a new contract with myself — a Sovereignty agreement which grants me full rights to lovingly stand up for me. This will likely look different for everyone, as sovereignty has a different meaning for each individual. It’s kind of like ice cream. The base ingredients are always

I’d like to share with all of you my own sovereignty agreement. This is the first time I’ve actually written it down, but it has been swirling around in my consciousness for the past few weeks waiting to be fully formed before it was written. I share it with the intention that you too will fully acknowledge and honor your sovereignty, for this is the pathway to unconditional love and acceptance of ourselves and others. The therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel

My 10 Keys to Sovereignty I am the divine light of God. I don’t require another religion or person to tell or teach me how to be fully connected to Spirit because I already AM.

C/NV/I-30 August 17

I have all the knowledge within me to guide me through my life. I may stumble along the way, but I know that this is the natural course of life and I will always find my way back to me. I have the power to say NO and I choose to exercise this right whenever I feel it is necessary. By saying no, this can open the door to something greater for myself. I am not responsible for saving this planet. Responsibility becomes a burden, which then creates a disconnection with my divine light. Instead, I choose to contribute to the planet through my humanitarian work and by being kind to others. I am responsible for my own feelings, thoughts, considerations, expectations, doubts, insecurities and judgments. This is certainly enough to keep me busy. I can’t possibly take responsibility for anyone else’s stuff!

New technique from Europe!

Co dependent relationships = no sovereignty. Therefore I choose to have friendships that are uplifting, mutually supportive, honest, filled with gratitude and heart intelligence, fun and thoughtful. It is okay for me to walk away from any relationship that is pulling me down or no longer serves my highest good. By choosing to walk away, I’m saying yes to me. My partner is not responsible for my happiness. As a sovereign being only I can make ME happy. Through our mutual respect and honor of each other as sovereign beings, happiness can expand even more because we have already C/He/I-20 Dec 17

embraced this within ourselves. I love my dog and feel deep gratitude for him being in my life, but I don’t expect him to be my constant companion, to do what I want to make me happy, to take away my sadness or pain. He is also sovereign and together we can enjoy each other through play and mutual understanding that we are both free to be who we are. Instead of getting angry and blaming all the thoughtless people who are littering the beach, as a sovereign being I can choose to take action and pick up the litter I see there. My choices create my reality. Every person I meet or situation that I encounter in life is not a mirror for me. Sometimes people are just experiencing their own heartache, anger, fear, etc, and it has nothing to do with me. I invite you to contemplate your own keys to sovereignty if you feel to do so. Imagine what the world would be like if all of us recognized our sovereignty and chose to live from this place? These past few months have been such a gift for me as I stand in my newly found sovereignty. There is such a freedom and peace to know that I have everything I need within me. I would love for all those reading this column and beyond to recognize your sovereignty and step into your place of power. It’s all just a choice. What will you choose?

31 Chronic Kidney Failure in Cats Kidney disease, also known as renal disease, is one of the most common diseases in dogs and cats that come to Sunset Vet. Kidney disease is very serious, as the kidneys are essential to filter the blood, excrete excess nitrogen and other toxins, regulate water and electrolyte balance, and produce hormones. When the kidneys become damaged and can no longer filter the blood, they cannot carry out those functions properly. Furthermore the kidneys are very poor at healing, unlike other organs. This means that the damage is usually irreversible. On the plus side, all mammals are born with 2 kidneys and can usually function well with just one, so there is some spare capacity. In fact pets do not start showing signs of kidney failure unless there is less than 30% functionality left. This is the reason why humans can donate a kidney to a relative in need of one, and still live a normal life with one kidney, as long as that remaining kidney is a healthy one. In other words, when we start to see symptoms of kidney failure, this means that already 70% of the kidneys have been damaged. There are two different types of kidney disease – acute (sudden) or chronic (long-term). Chronic kidney disease is more common in cats, and what we will discuss here. The earlier we treat chronic kidney disease, the longer we can prolong life expectancy.

Symptoms of chronic kidney disease Some of the following symptoms of chronic kidney disease are seen late in the disease. Early detection of any of the following signs can help to treat kidney disease and preserve the remaining functioning parts of the kidney. • Polydipsia/Polyuria (increased thirst/urination) • Losing weight • Poor coat quality • Lethargic • Bad breath (halitosis) • Mouth ulceration • Losing appetite • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Sudden onset blindness (retinal detachment)

What can cause chronic kidney disease? Chronic kidney disease has a number of possible causes. Some have the potential for prevention or effective treatment if detected early enough. • Degenerative kidney disease, associated with ageing • Bacterial infections (these can ascend from the bladder, or spread through the blood stream) • Congenital abnormalities of the kidney (e.g. Persian cats born with polycystic kidneys) • Kidney tumours (Lymphosarcoma is the most common, a cancer of white blood cells) • Hypertension (high blood pressure) • Viral infections (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) or Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)) • Amyloid deposition in the kidney

How is chronic kidney disease diagnosed? Many of the clinical signs indicative of chronic kidney disease are vague, and can also be indicators of other disease processes occurring. In order to diagnose kidney disease, it is important that further tests are carried out. These tests can be done before the cat is unwell, when early detection is still possible. • Physical Examination – during your annual check-up the vet can palpate the kidneys and will take a full history about how much the cat is drinking and urinating. The normal drinking amount is around 50ml/kg/24hrs. If your pet is drinking >100ml/kg/24hrs then this could be an indicator of kidney disease. • Blood Test - A ‘biochemistry’ blood panel is important to check levels of urea and creatinine in the blood (indicators of kidney function), red and white blood cells, potassium, phosphorous and other electrolytes. • Urine Sample – A urine sample will be assessed based on its concentration (‘specific gravity’), giving an indication of how well the kidneys are able to concentrate or dilute the urine. If the Specific Gravity is over 1.012 then the

kidneys are still able to reabsorb water and concentrate the urine. The urine will also be assessed for protein, red and white blood cells, and any bacteria f o r further information. Additionally, a further test may be performed to check where damage has been done in the kidney. This is called a “urine protein creatinine ratio” and can guide medications to help minimise protein loss. • Abdominal Ultrasound - an ultrasound (USG) is a non-invasive way to assess the kidneys. This can be done conscious without sedation, but may require clipping of the fur on the flanks. The vet can look for signs of amyloid deposition, shrinking of the kidneys due to fibrosis, a tumor or swelling due to infection.

Cat Kidney Disease Treatment Options The appropriate treatment depends on how advanced the kidney disease is, based on the above diagnostic tests. • Intravenous Fluids – This is the first line treatment recommended for a sick, dehydrated cat. IV fluids help to flush the kidneys, reduce toxin levels in the bloodstream, and rehydrate your cat. • Appetite Stimulants (cyproheptadine) and Anabolic Steroids (laurabolin) – These are used to get your cat eating again, and to combat muscle wastage. • Dietary Change – A prescription kidney diet has reduced levels of protein and phosphorus. This will minimise the work the kidneys have to do, and the levels of toxins in the blood stream.

• Phosphate Binders (Ipakitine) – Damaged kidneys have a limited ability to process phosphate. This medication will bind phosphorus in the intestines so it doesn’t cross into the circulation and build up in the blood stream.

• Antibiotics – If a urinary tract or kidney infection is detected, appropriate antibiotics will be prescribed – usually ones excreted in the urine such as amoxicillin. • Potassium Supplementation - Excessive loss of potassium when kidneys fail results in muscle weakness and poor coat quality. • Blood Pressure Monitoring – Blood pressure is monitored in order to reduce the chance of further damage to kidneys. Treatment (usually enalapril or amlodipine) will be started if high blood pressure is detected. • Anaemia monitoring and treatment – Damaged kidneys fail to produce the hormone ‘erythropoietin’ needed for the production of red blood cells. If available, this can be given in synthetic form to stimulate red blood cell production. • Providing lots of water – Encourage your cat to drink with multiple water bowls, ensuring they are always full with fresh water as cats with chronic kidney disease are at increased risk of dehydration.

Lombok Earthquake Relief: How you can help

Indonesia’s Lombok has been jolted by two major earthquakes and hundreds of aftershocks in the past week with a 6.4 on July 29 and an even more devastating 7.0 on August 5. The death toll of the 7.0-quake has been continuing to climb (it’s up to 98 at the moment), hundreds have been wounded, and thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes. Electricity has gone dead in parts of the island, clean drinking water has been difficult to access, and local residents have been afraid to go inside structures, fearful that they could collapse. There is a handful of dedicated group of NGOs on the ground that have sprung into action with the relief effort, passing out supplies, helping make temporary shelters, and rebuilding. Here’s an index of NGOs and community members with active crowdfunding campaigns to help the victims of the Lombok earthquakes. Lombok Forgotten Children: Endri Foundation The foundation, which is based in Lombok and is dedicated to assisting the island’s sick, poor, disabled, and displaced has its hands full after the past two earthquakes. A fundraising campaign has been launched on GoFundMe to get support for the foundation’s relief effort, which needs fuel for its vans that are moving food and aid around (a lot of food is being donated by hotels, according to the organization), medical supplies, and plastic covers to build basic shelters.

Indonesia to hand over Jho Low’s yacht Indonesia has agreed to hand over to Malaysia a US$250mil (RM1.02bil) luxury yacht linked to a corruption scandal at a Malaysian state fund that it impounded in Bali earlier this year, Indonesian authorities said. The Cayman Islands-flagged Equanimity was seized in February at the request of US authorities as part of a multi-billion dollar corruption investigation launched by the Department of Justice (DOJ) related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). An Indonesian court ruling in April declared that the yacht was wrongfully impounded and should be released to its owners. Indonesian police seized the boat again in July following a formal request for legal assistance from the US.

Project Karma & Yayasan Team Action Amed This one is a cooperative effort between Project Karma, an Australian NGO, and Team Action Amed, which was actually born in response to Bali’s erupting Mount Agung last year. The team has been very hands on, focusing on collecting donated items and funds and distributing supplies to evacuees, like rice, cooking oil, dried beans, sugar, tea, as well as water filters.

Indonesian police said they would hand the yacht over to Malaysia but did not specify when. “The yacht will be handed over at the border between Indonesian and Malaysian waters,” Daniel Silitonga, the deputy for economic and special crimes, said yesterday. “We have to maintain good relations between the two countries,” he said, adding that the yacht was currently in the waters close to the border of Singapore and the Indonesian island of Batam. A source also said on Friday that the decision to hand the yacht to Malaysia was reached following a personal request made by Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Dr Mahathir, 93, had visited Indonesia in June, his first official visit in the region after returning to power. The vessel is said to have an interior clad in marble and gold leaf, a spa and sauna, a 20m swimming pool on deck, a movie theatre, a lift and a helipad. [Reuters August 7, 2018]

Palang Merah Indonesia The Indonesian Red Cross works directly with the government to assist evacuees and provide aid. They are accepting donations specifically for those in Lombok affected by the earthquakes at this time.

SafeSearch on: Indonesia IT Ministry instructs all ISPs to restrict pornography from search engines by tomorrow

Earthquake Relief for Lombok: GoFundMe campaign This is a GoFundMe that is working with some of the other aforementioned organizations, including Endri’s Foundation, Yayasan Team Action Amed, and Project Karma, as well as organizations in the Gilis-they’re waiting to give more specifics about things in the Gilis once power comes back on and proper funding channels are in place. [Coconuts Bali August 6, 2018] Editor’s note: Any of these organizations/websites can be Googled and donations made.

The Indonesian government is escalating their long-yet-ultimately-futile battle against internet pornography as they aim to target the enabler of the supposed problem: search engines. On Friday, Indonesia’s IT Ministry (Kominfo) announced that ISPs have until tomorrow (Aug 7) for local ISPs to restrict pornographic content that can appear in search engines. What this means is, essentially, search engines like Google will have their SafeSearch toggled on by default by the ISP, preventing any naughty videos and pictures to appear in any search. “We are at war with pornographic content on the internet, especially in search engines,” Kominfo Information Application Director General Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan told Detik.

Peduli Anak Foundation The Mataram-based orphanage suffered major structural damage from the earthquake but is raising funds to rebuild their space, which consists of four dormitories for children, classrooms, a mosque, offices, and other supporting facilities. Kids, who are in the foundation’s care because they’ve been abused, exploited, or neglected, are currently camped out on the basketball fields and in need of shelter, according to a video posted by Peduli Anak’s crowdfunding page on KitaBisa.com.

Flotilla of ships deployed between Lombok and Bali to evacuate tourists and locals escaping aftermath of August 5th 7.0 magnitude earthquake Nusa Bali reports that some 1,500 domestic and foreign tourists have been evacuated from the Island of Lombok using a wide range of sea-transport following the Sunday, August 5, 2018, 7.0 magnitude earthquake that had an epicenter in North Lombok. Passengers were brought to Bali’s southernmost Port of Benoa using a flotilla of vessels starting from Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon. Among the ships deployed for the evacuation were KM Binaiya, MV Bounty Cruise, KM KPLP I, KM KPLP II, MV Patagonia, and MV Patagonia Xpress. The first ship carrying evacuees, KM Binaiya, berthed at the eastern pier in the Port of Benoa carrying 86 passengers at 10:30 pm on Monday. The manifest of the ship was dominated by foreign tourists bringing their personal belongings from Lombok. A second ship, the MV Bounty Cruise catamaran brought 541 tourists to their private jetty in Benoa at 1:15 am on Tuesday morning. Throughout the rest of Tuesday, hundreds of tourists arrived in Bali from Lombok in a series of ship arrivals that had traveled the 54 nautical miles across the Lombok Straits. Coordinating the arrival of domestic and foreign tourists was the head of the Denpasar Police Precinct, Hadi Purnomo, who personally headed the large complement of police assigned to stand-by at the Port. Purnomo said his officers were coordinating with the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI-Bali) to support and assist the tourists fleeing the aftermath of the Lombok earthquake. That assistance took the form of busses and ambulances to carry passengers to medical centers, Bali’s Airport, and hotels on the Island of Bali. Separately, the spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, confirmed that up and until 8:00 pm on Monday the number of tourists and local residents evacuated from North Lombok, Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan totaled 4,636 people who were transported to the Port of Benoa in Bali and the Port of Lembar in South Lombok. The Director-General of Immigration confirmed that 7 foreign nationals suffered injuries as a result of Sunday’s earthquake in Lombok and were being treated at hospitals in Lombok. Through mid-day Tuesday, August 7th the death count linked to the earthquake stood at 105 people, a number expected to grow as rescue workers inspect structures destroyed by the disaster. The distribution of fatalities to date records 78 people killed in North Lombok, 16 in West Lombok, 4 in the City of Mataram, 3 in East Lombok, 2 in Central Lombok, and 2 in Bali. Hundreds were injured in the earthquake. [www.balidiscovery.com August 8, 2018]

British woman who missed her flight slaps Bali immigration officer It’s not easy being an immigration officer nowadays. An officer at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport got slapped in the face on July 28 by an enraged British woman who missed her flight to Singapore. Auj-e Taqaddas was barred from boarding a plane when immigration records showed that she overstayed in Indonesia for 160 days. Her month-long visa expired on Feb 18. After she was told that she had racked up a US$4,000 (S$5,500) fine for overstaying, the 42-year-old woman flew into a rage. In a video clip that has gone viral online, Taqaddas can be seen cussing at immigration officer Ardyansyah, 28. “You aren’t paying for this f***ing flight,” she yelled. “You b*****ds told me to bring the money, why didn’t you b*****ds tell me anything else?” When she failed to snatch her passport from his hands, Taqaddas struck him on the cheek. She later noticed that Ardyansyah’s colleague was filming the incident, and demanded that he show his face on camera. Immigration Chief Ngurah Rai Aris Amran said: “She slapped the officer, who is a respected guard. She touched immigration, which means touching representatives of the nation. So we reported it to the police.” The woman has since been detained by Bali police, according to media reports.[Asia One August 3, 2018]

As of this morning, multiple netizens have confirmed that, using one specific ISP, porn is no longer searchable on Google and SafeSearch can’t be switched off. We have also found this to be the case for said ISP, but that could quickly change by the end of today as other ISPs are expected to implement the porn search ban. However, it doesn’t seem like Kominfo’s search engine porn restriction is completely foolproof as netizens claim that workarounds that can bypass any of Kominfo’s previous internet porn restrictions still apply. If there’s one battle that’s impossible to win, it’s the battle to block every single instance of internet porn. But that is the battle the Indonesian government has been engaged in ever since internet pornography was officially made illegal in 2008. Since then, many major pornographic websites have been blocked while sites like Reddit and Tumblr, which contain a small portion of pornography, have also become unnecessary casualties. This year, Kominfo launched a US$14 million automatic porn censorship system that they say will be able to block 30 million websites containing negative content, which also include gambling, extremism and sexual education. The tech was seen by many as a waste of money as there always have been, and, theoretically, there always will be, workarounds to any internet censorship. [Coconuts Bali August 6, 2018] French tourist dies at Gianyar, Bali swing-set attraction Police and local authorities have installed police lines and temporarily closed a “Nature Swing” tourist attraction in Ceking, Tegallalang, Gianyar, Bali The decision to close the “swing set” that sent people soaring over a deep valley was taken following the death of a French tourist, Patrick Jean Pierre Bouchard (52), on July 25, 2018. Nusa Bali reports that four other swings in the area remain in operation with Gianyar Regency Officials reluctant to close all the swing sets operated by local citizens. The attraction that is basically a long swing that is pushed manually from its starting point while the occupant sweeps out over the deep valley stretching before them. The swings are not licensed attractions and, as such, undergo no licensing or safety checks. The death of the the French tourist took place when the man was trying to push one of his children on the slide, slipped, and fell 15 meters down the ravine on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. I wanted a snack that was high in protein and low in calories and fat. But it also had to taste good. Perhaps these taste too good because I can’t eat just one or two. I see the jar and my hand goes right to it. Bad hand! You can vary the spices in each batch. Combining Indian curry powder, cumin, and chili powder is quite nice. But now I’m thinking about ground rosemary, sage and thyme….and maybe a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese – oh oh there goes the fat.

Directions: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Slice the tempeh as thinly as possible and lay the pieces in a single layer on a metal baking sheet. Don’t let them overlap. Depending on the shape of the tempeh, you may want to cut them a bit smaller because if they are too big they will break easily. You want them to be medium sized. Combine all the remaining ingredients except the oil and salsa in a small bowl and set aside.

15 August 2018 - 28 August 2018

Either spray or brush the oil on the tempeh slices. Sprinkle half the spice mixture on the pieces and then using a spatula carefully and gently flip the slices over. Spray or brush the other side with oil. You want the oil to be super thin. It’s just to give the spices something to stick to. Sprinkle the remaining spice mixture on this side and slide the baking sheet into the preheated oven. It’s important that the oven is 375 degrees before you put the tempeh slices in to bake. Bake for 10 minutes, remove the baking sheet and gently flip the chips over and return to the oven for 7-10 minutes more. Be very careful in the last baking that they don’t burn. At 7 minutes keep a close eye on the chips. Completely cool the tempeh chips before storing in an airtight container. They are delicious as is or serve with fresh tomato salsa. You have to spoon the salsa onto the chips as they break if you try to scoop the salsa up with the chip.
