Fluro Fridays How can you prescribe or describe an issue that is invisible to the human eye? This is where the stigma behind mental health issues start and end. But, one group is set out to break the stigma, one Fluro Friday at a time. You’re probably thinking, what do fluorescent colours and surfers have to do with breaking the stigma. Well, in order to break the stigma, we have to break the silence. But how do you start a conversation about mental health? Where do you begin? After ten years of battling mental health issues, the founder of OneWave, Grant Trebilco discovered this winning formula when he combined salt-water therapy, surfing and fluro to take to the beach of Bondi, Sydney.

Bondi Beach - Australia

who are all passionate about the ocean and helping people tackle mental health issues with saltwater therapy.

Not knowing what would come of this simple yet extreme recipe, Grant was immediately questioned about why he was making such a visual fashion statement.

The non-profit surf community aims to tackle funks like depression, anxiety & bipolar by letting people know that they are not alone, encouraging them to get in the ocean, surf it out and talk about it.

“I am bipolar and I suffer from depression and anxiety,” Grant answered.

Like most surfers, Grant says the ocean and surfing was his savior during tough times.

And so it began. The silence was broken and OneWave is all it takes was born.

“You never forget the feeling of being on a wave, letting everything go and enjoying the moment. One wave is all it takes to free the funk. To give you hope.” Grant says.

Now, five years on, OneWave has expanded to 50 beaches worldwide, including one right here in Canggu. The group holds weekly Fluro Friday sessions hosted by volunteer ambassadors,

“We dress up in the brightest outfits possible, go surfing, swim, and do yoga. Fluro makes people smile and it gets

people asking important questions, which are normally avoided about mental health. Everyone is welcome and it is a free event.” Right here in Canggu, OneWave holds Fluro Friday sunrise sessions. The aim is to dress up in the brightest outfits possible and surf/swim/do yoga. Fluro makes people smile and it gets people asking important questions, which are normally avoided about mental health. Not only is this a great way to free the funk, dress up loud and proud, and be part of an awesome community, but for those living in Bali, it is a great way to meet an amazing group of new friends. Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

What does Tirta Yatra mean? Derived from Sanskrit, tirta yatra literally means “sacred holy water pilgrimage”: a journey (normally of a substantial distance) to seek and or collect holy water. These days in Bali, the original meaning is somewhat lost and tirta yatra means simply a holy or spiritual pilgrimage. Tirta yatra, unlike spiritual journeys by holy men, can be carried out by anyone of any caste and socioeconomic status. Balinese have been doing tirta yatra since the adoption of SiwaBuddhist ideas more than a thousand years ago in Bali. Traditionally, common spiritual pilgrimages would have been to the six most important temples in Bali, the sad khayangan, which includes of course the mother temple, Besakih. Since pilgrimages for people in the beach areas of Sanur and Kuta, for example, would have been done on foot and taken several days with many rest stops along the way. Before the advent of vehicles, your average Balinese would only aim to do one tirta yatra in a lifetime, with Besakih being at the top of the list. Today, tirta yatra is extremely common and is even marketed into tour packages using large tourist buses (invariably in police-escorted convoys!) and include additional attractions such as shopping (in the case of pilgrimages to other islands or even other countries). The huge build up of traffic around the major temples at ceremony time reflects the contemporary popularity of tirta yatra. Balinese believe that titra yatra brings one closer to God, as well as fellow pilgrims, and is an important part of the Tri Hita Karana philosophy of the balance between humans, god and nature. Tirta yatra also has a higher rank than religious ceremony (yadnya) and the largest type of offering that can be created (or these days ‘ordered from offering makers). Pilgrims normally give a temple donation at their tirta yatra destination. This helps with the upkeep of the temple as well as the facilities (toilets, parking etc) that is necessary to accommodate the large number of pilgrims with the everincreasing popularity of spiritual tourism. MAGIC FOR SALE I opened Ubud Community Facebook page the other day to see the message “Hey Ubud Peeps! Where can I find a balian healer?” Thus the ancient role of the Balian, who is guided by the gods to aid humans through mysticism and ritual, is reduced to just another item on the tourist itinerary to be sandwiched between a massage and a cycling tour. “I’ve had people tell me they need to be at the airport by five o’clock but still have a few hours, so take me to a healer,” said I Made Surya, who is named in Lonely Planet On-line Travel as the leading authority on Balinese healers. “These are not people with problems to be solved; they look on it as entertainment.” Balians are traditional healers who play an important part in the local culture by treating physical and mental illness, removing spells and channeling information from the ancestors. The Balian is an instrument of divine healing, and the client enters a covenant to receive this healing with respect, reverence and humility. There are about 8,000 practicing in Bali, outnumbering medical doctors. Anthropologists and scholars have been studying Balians for almost a century but the book Eat, Pray, Love focused international attention on the men and women of magic for the first time. Since then Surya has seen an escalating demand to be taken to ‘a healer’, even by people who had nothing wrong with them.

If tourists want to visit healers, then healers they shall have.

Quite a number of Balians won’t see foreigners at all, because they feel it’s too difficult to communicate the subtlety and nuance of their work across the language and cultural barriers, even with a translator. There are four kinds of Balians.

A visit to a Balian is a serious matter. If you decide to go, do your homework first. “There are many types of healers who work on specific problems: broken bones, broken hearts, mental disorders, removing black magic - so choose one that’s appropriate for you,” advises Surya. “Expect that it will be a process involving several treatments. It’s not an instantaneous process, so don’t expect to be healed on your way to the airport. “Bring an offering to a healer, with a donation of appreciation inside. At the end of the day, the healer dedicates this offering to his/her spirit in the family temple; be generous. Give your offering with your right hand. Balians have the same status as priests so show respect by dressing in a sarong and temple scarf. Of course if you are seeing a bone/muscle healer you need to wear loose, comfortable clothes.”

Imagine living in a world of silence. Deafness is not uncommon on Bali, due to trauma, infections and genetic causes. A deaf child is often regarded as shameful to the family and kept out of sight without any kind of support, living in a very isolated world and

The first kind is a Ketakson who acts as a channel between the client and God. Ketaksons evoke the spirit of a dead person, and pass on information to the family about what kinds of offerings are needed for cremations and other ceremonies. They can also channel living people to give guidance or locate missing objects. Most of the female Balians are Ketakson. The Pica/Paica Balian is a medium who may not be a formal student of magic. This kind of Balian receives physical objects which appear and disappear spontaneously and are used during healing sessions. The Balian Usada is a person who either has the intention to become a Balian or may receive divine knowledge during a severe illness. These people decide to further their knowledge by studying the lontars (sacred texts) and with recognized healers. The lontars, thousands of ancient texts in Kawi script, contain information on ethics, anatomy, traditional herbs, meditation, yoga, tantra and other subjects. These Balians also study both white and black magic, which are very similar except for the intention of the practitioner. The fourth kind of Balian combines all of the above. Many may appear crazy or psychotic, or hear voices, while the wisdom is entering them.

Demand has created an industry. If tourists want to visit healers, then healers they shall have. “It’s a good business,” Surya told me. “Ubud has the buzz, and has become a stage for commercial enterprises delivering ‘traditional healing’. Both Balinese and foreigners are getting into the act. There’s a proliferation of English-speaking Balinese and Westerners wearing traditional Balinese dress claiming to be healers. They have websites and I see them on Facebook. There are plenty of bogus Balians out there. Genuine Balians don’t advertise, draw attention to themselves or even like to be addressed as a Balian, as this can invite jealousy.” A visit to a genuine Balian will be very public, with all the other clients watching closely. The healer may make magic, create fire, use mudrahs, draw patterns on your body, spit wads of chewed herbs on your skin, apply scented oils, poke you with sharp sticks and/or give you a deep tissue massage or manipulation that will be very painful indeed.

Help Change a Child’s Life

vulnerable to abuse. Sushrusa is a school for deaf children, founded in 2008 by the charity YKIP and CV Lumina. Each child is tested, provided with a hearing aid and taught a total communication system which includes sign language, lip reading, speech and expressive language. If the children can be reached while still young, then with training and interactive parents many can learn to speak. Children of all abilities flourish, learning to read, write, do mathematics and use computers. The auditory-verbal language system closes down at about age ten. Deaf children can’t learn to speak after that, so it’s essential to start working with them as young as possible. Sushrusa has space for 15 children in its Playgroup intake this year. It seeks donors who will consider long-term sponsorship for their child to enable a life-changing education. Initial enrollment is Rp. 2,700,000 and after that Rp. 500,000 a month which includes tuition, uniforms, snacks, some after school speech therapy and a petrol allowance for the parents. For further information please contact Vikki MacKay at: hlliem@hotmail.com or call the Sushrusa School directly at 0361 262035.

If you want to visit a genuine Balian, you’ll get much more from the experience by learning something about the complex process. Surya, a scholar of the Hindu religion and very knowledgeable about Balians, is sometimes available to take visitors to a carefully selected healer depending on their condition. He’s the only expert I’m aware of who offers healing arts study tours to those interested in the culture of traditional Balinese medicine and magic, and the opportunity to visit authentic Balians during one, two and six-day study tours. He explains the different types of healers, the mystical aspects of the practice and the offerings, and translates. “I am not a Balian Referral Service to tell you who you should see in Bali,” he clarifies. “I don’t take visitors to fortune tellers, astrologers or palm readers; it is not part of our tradition. The integrity of the system needs to be protected. People need to shed their preconceptions. This is a very complex religion.” For more information about Healing Arts Study Tours with Surya, visit www.Balihealers.com or contact him directly at danu@earthlink.net.

17 INVESTING - STAYING SAFE IN AN UNSAFE WORLD Following Donald Trump’s surprise and controversial election as the 45th President of the United States 2017 could prove to be a year of great opportunity - or a year when we might wish we had taken cover. Everyone has an opinion, but no-one knows yet how things will really pan out. This presents a dilemma for investors. Is this a time to be investing like mad or a time to get out of the markets and stay in cash? If you fail to take advantage of the opportunities you will regret it later when you see how much money others have made. On the other hand, if you invest heavily and things go wrong you could end up with big losses. Psychologists Kahneman and Tversky in a 1979 treatise wrote that ‘People feel more pain from a loss than the pleasure they feel from a similar gain.’ This would explain why we are likely to lose far more sleep over a loss of 50% on an investment than we would over a 50% gain! This is known as ‘loss aversion’. A point worth keeping in mind when you are making investment decisions.

and mortar, provided rental income and appreciated over time. However, when the credit crunch came many investors wanted to cash out but there were no buyers so many funds were suspended. Worse, in cases where funds had borrowed heavily the banks, as they do when there is a panic, called in their loans. In the case of one fund, Glanmore Property, this resulted in the complete collapse of the fund and the loss to investors of almost all their money once the banks had taken their share. Taking advantage of investors’ aversion to conventional assets a number of ‘alternative’ funds came on the scene in the two or three years following the crisis. They included a wide range of novel asset classes such as forestry products, a waste-to-energy project, litigation funding, credit factoring, venture capital, asset-backed lending, care homes, holiday camps, car park spaces, storage lots, and even burial plots. Most of the funds projected returns in the region of 10% per annum and boasted considerable security features. The financial industry embraced many of these products in order to satisfy consumer appetite for funds that were not correlated with the perceived ‘risky’ stock markets.

So what are the opportunities and risks right now? Donald Trump has promised to bring millions of jobs back to America, reduce taxes and regulation. He has promised to spend billions on infrastructure and will increase military spending. All these things should be good for the US stock market. It should be a great time to be investing in anything related to manufacturing, infrastructure, defence-related stocks, commodities and energy. But one problem is that the US stock market is already expensive in terms of historical price to earnings ratios. Currently, emerging market stocks are twice as attractive by the same measure. Emerging markets, however, could be hit by the threat of cancelled trade deals and punitive levies on imports to the US. Then again, we don’t know how geo-political factors such as the US relations with Iran, China and North Korea will play out. Tough talk could be just a negotiating ploy to reach firm and acceptable solutions or if no-one backs down there could be fireworks! Inflation – friend or foe? The strong US economy has already led the Federal Reserve to apply a couple of small increases to interest rates. If some of Trump’s policies are are put into practice they are going to lead to a rapid rise in spending and an inevitable acceleration in interest rates with accompanying inflation. A degree of inflation is not a bad thing if it comes with growth, but too much inflation will make it harder for borrowers and could lead to a recession, which is obviously bad for markets. Runaway inflation can also be disastrous for investors holding annuities or receiving a fixed income. British retirees living in Bali who receive a pension that is frozen from the day they left the UK would see the purchasing power of their pensions rapidly eroded, a double whammy following the devaluation of the pound as a result of the Brexit referendum. Stocks are likely to rise in periods of inflation so it would be wise to be fully invested, but keep watch in case a recession is threatened. Those who remain heavy in cash are likely to see the real value of the cash seriously eroded over time. Gold is a more difficult one to call. It pays no interest so is a poor investment in times of high interest rates. It could well fall in value. On the other hand if there is serious inflation and the threat of a recession or any hint of political unrest gold may well surge as investors seek safe havens. A holding in gold is a useful form of insurance. Be wary of alternative investments The Global Financial Crisis of 2008 / 9 saw global stock markets fall by some 40% to 70%. Major markets, particularly the US, recovered quickly through 2010 but the psychological damage had been done. Property was previously seen as a safe bet as it consisted of solid bricks

But while the investment concepts were often well-founded, the management of the funds in many cases proved otherwise and while some funds are still running successfully, too many of them failed and the so-called security features proved worthless. Fraud was often involved. In one of the worst cases, seven British solicitors have to date been struck off for their part in the collapse of a fund. The fund had been established on the back of the Access to Justice Act 1999 in the UK which allowed third party funding of legal cases. Investors are now fighting for justice against the very people who are meant to uphold it. The moral of this story is that while there are many attractive investment opportunities in the world, great care is necessary and at the end of the day it is safer to stay with conventional and well-established investment products unless you have plenty of ‘play money’ that you can afford to lose. In the UK there is a Financial Services Compensation Scheme that meets the claims of investors who have lost money through fraud etc. Since 2001 the scheme has come to the aid of more than 4.6 million people, paying out a total of GBP 26 billion. So clearly problems are widespread. In the offshore world such protection is not available so extra care is needed when investing. But failure to invest can be risky too All investments bear risks, even failure to invest since cash in the bank or under the mattress will quickly lose its purchasing value when inflation returns. It is very important to keep some cash reserves however. Owning a stately home is useless if you can’t sell it and have no money to pay the bills. But money designated for the long term needs to be wisely invested in a wide range of conventional asset classes including stocks, bonds, commodities and property. Be realistic with expectations and bear in mind that there is a direct link between risk and returns. Right now there are some great opportunities as well as dangers but diversification and staying the course will help you stay safe.

Restaurant & Food Update

Biku was one of the rare few. Full on opening and it has been the same ever since. Biku, on Jln Petitenget, does High Teas. So do most major hotels mid-afternoon, every mid-afternoon. At Biku, on Jln. Petitenget, they are available all day, from 11.00 a.m. till 6.00 p.m. Not just the traditional English High Tea, which they do perfectly, but also an Asian High Tea and even a Children’s High Tea. I love snacking and Biku has many options that are just right for me; Spicy Chicken Wings, Vegetable Samosas [with chutney of course], Corn Cakes with avocado salsa, fresh Vietnamese Spring Rolls and great Crisp Sesame Chicken with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. A breakfast with a difference, so healthy, is the Indian Lentil Crepes. However Biku has a secret that not everyone knows about… they also have the best meat pies in Bali. The range is Beef, Lamb [pictured] and Chicken & Leek. All are wrapped in crunchy pastry, filled with quality meat. Biku is always buzzing! Full of happy customers who you can tell by their manner, have been there before and will soon be coming back again. A unique success story!

Ducks Nutz was very popular, and very Aussie. In Sanur on Jln. Tamblingan, at end of lease it closed some time ago. Their Big Aussie Breakfast was legendry, and missed by many, tourists and locals alike. The management is still alive and well and offering most of what they did before, just a smaller selection, at their Sanur Duck Inn on Jln. Pasar Gang 4, where you can snack and drink by the swimming pool, in their garden.

Cengkih Jintens is the latest addition to the Renon food loop, at its eastern side, Jln, Prof, Moh, Yamin. In an area where the new restaurant openings and closings are almost a weekly ritual this is a very large and impressive new building, which at least show the confidence of the management. It is definitely aimed purely at the local and domestic market [zero English on menu, in fact not even any descriptions in Bahasa, just the name of the dish]. The staff, also have zero English but at least they do try to be as helpful as they can. Inside the spacious building it is air-conditioned, the front terrace garden deck available for smokers and outdoor dining. Whilst the standard Indonesian dishes are the norm here [Ayam Bakar, Rawon soup, etc.] the specials of the house all concentrate on the local fish, Gurame. There are many different species of Gourami, although all are freshwater, and in Indonesia usually farmed. The fish is very versatile and offered here in a soup [Sup Gurame], a salad [Gurame Rujak], Asem Manis, Pesmol or used in a Pepes Nila. However it is its use in a sate that seems the most popular causing many return visits. Fat Chow has been feeding the masses with Asian delights on Poppies no. 2 for some time. Now they have ventured to Jimbaran, at Temple Hill with a 2nd outlet. They serve mostly Chinese, with a touch of Thai and a few local dishes thrown in as well.

Hanging Gardens of Bali, of Payangan, north-west of Ubud is located on the jungle side of the sacred Ayung. Once renowned for its fine cuisine those days have again returned under the astute management of their General Manager, Gary Rosen, who was the opening executive chef at Tandjung Benoa’s Conrad hotel some years back. It has always possessed one of Bali’s most magic dining settings, and now the food served matches that. Even the all day menu has interesting items such as a sandwich with a difference, yellow fin tuna on a toasted brioche, with egg, bacon and a spicy aioli. However dinner is the magic time! Start with a Carpaccio of Salmon, ginger soy dressing, salmon caviar or Seared Scallops with Chorizo Croquettes, cauliflower puree and coriander oil. Mains can be Lobster, curried or as a truffled risotto. Duck is with the leg confit, the breast is grilled, served with puree of sweet potato and asparagus. Lamb Rack is with tandoori spices, pumpkin dhal and mint raita. Steaks are a specialty, your choice of four; Australian Black Angus or Wagyu, Japanese Tajima or Kobe. An evening to remember, but a prior reservation is essential. Crumb & Coaster is on Jln. Benesari, in Kuta, almost on the corner of Poppies. Menu is the usual for trendy modern cafes. A little bit of everything with no real specialties. Eggs Benedict, Smashed Avocado, Corn Fritters, Tuna Melt, Quesdaillas, Pulled Pork, and so on. Obviously works Trip Advisor well as is the current No. 1, as hundreds of others have been before it. How anywhere can be rated at 100% amazes me, it says a lot about the person doing the rating.

Kakiang Bakery & Café is a long time favourite at Pengosekan, just south of Ubud. A Japanese owned French bakery has to be unique, but the quality here is unquestioned. Existing for nigh on 20 years, many have since attempted to copy but none have been successful. The excellent croissants that disappear early morning during those French seasons prove the point. Downstairs is air con, upstairs al fresco. Kakiang is now offering amazing budget breakfasts [7.00 – 10.00 a.m.]. Two groups, all with coffee [Illy] or tea included. A @ Rp. 38,000++ can be one of their croissants, stuffed with an egg salad, or a scrambled egg & ham sandwich or nasi goreng. B @ Rp. 60,000++ consists of 2 eggs, any which way, plus chicken sausages and baked beans with your choice of Bread Basket, French Toast [not really, just a baguette] or Pancakes. Great value! Kedai Singapura has been making a name for itself amongst all the Laksa lovers. It is in Jimbaran, up the hill on the way to Uluwatu [Jln. Uluwatu II]. This is the real Laksa, Singapore style. Singapore’s other favourite dish, Haianan Chicken, is not bad either.

Something Different, at Last! GROW is different. Ever since first reading their menu I have been eager to try the actual food. Sometimes menus that read well are disappointing on the plate, whilst others that seem so boring amaze you with their taste! The GROW menu fascinated me at first glance and certainly did not disappoint when it came to tasting time! The food is innovative, original and most importantly so different for Bali. No doubt many of the dishes have been well road tested over the years at chef’s Tippling Club in Singapore. Rillettes of Confit Duck and Cashew Nuts are a great starter. The shredded meat is served in a small stainless steel pan, on the side a row of crunchy toast slices and strips of pickled vegetables. Already you could terminate the meal here, and just keep on eating slice after slice. If you normally offered me a dish that had popcorn as an ingredient, I would say ‘thanks, but no thanks!’. But already trusting English Chef Ryan Clift and full of curiosity I went for it…. Confit of Scallops with toasted corn, corn puree, basil jelly and curried popcorn. So many different ingredients yet the result was just one total taste, without one thing overpowering the other, the measuring stick for great chefs. Scattered across the top of this dish were a combination of fresh and deep-fried basil leaves, adding yet another dimension. There is a Carpaccio of Tuna, the slices topped with a puree of avocado, pickled daikon and crisp nori. Very refreshing is the Crab Meat Salad, tossed with granny smith apple, lemon and pea puree, pea shoots and baby gem lettuce infused with mint vinegar. Soups can be a hearty Leek and Potato with braised celery root and parsley crackers or Watercress and Kale which comes with a soft poached egg and toast strips for dunking. There are just three pasta options but all are quite exceptional. The pasta is made, daily, in the kitchen. The Rigatoni is enhanced with small chunks and strips of strongly smoked bacon and slices of blue foot mushroom, then topped with a sauce of that strong English stilton cheese blended with a balsamic reduction. Full of flavour! The other pastas are Fusilli, served with crab meat in a Thai curry sauce, and Strozzapreti, that unusual spirally tube pasta that the chef combines with an oxtail ragout that

has been braised for 48 hours and topped with parmesan wafers and sprigs of thyme. The Beef Cheek has been braised, so it is soft and easy to shred. It is served with a liberal coating of beetroot infused quinoa and quarters of lightly roasted baby beets. Chicken Thighs [more taste than breast meat] are prepared confit as in good French tradition, served with green peas, mint, bacon pieces and lettuce. Pork Belly comes with a spicy pumpkin puree, a braised mix of grapes and walnuts, all drizzled with a masala jus. Seafood is what many expect to enjoy in Bali, sadly too often a disappointment. Just three options here and all are a bit special. The simplest is the Roasted Barramundi with a puree of smoked eggplant, and cucumber raita spaghetti. Or you can have Red Snapper, with cauliflower couscous, pickled cauliflower and masala jus. The most sensational dish for me was the Grouper [pictured[. The fish perfectly pan fried, not overcooked as is a local norm, is covered with quite a strong pea and green curry sauce with compressed celery and puffed rice. The complete dish is then encased in an emulsion [foam] flavoured with Thai’s Tom Kha [coconut milk and galangal]. A feast of flavour, an incredibly complex dish but, once again, perfectly balanced.

Desserts are less adventurous but still great value. The Basil and Lemon Tart uses a crisp basil shortbread base with vanilla ice cream on top. The essential chocolate offering is a Fudge Cake, served warm with chocolate ice cream. Roast Mango is with coconut sago, coconut sorbet and fresh coriander. As the restaurant is a part of the L Hotel, they also offer a breakfast every day [from 7.00 a.m.]. This is also very different form the usual. Poached Eggs are with sun-dried tomato, polenta, grilled chorizo, pickled courgette, smoked paprika and garlic aioli. Destroyed Avocado is served with a slow cooked egg, chilli, tomato and coriander. The Omelette is oven-baked, with asparagus and a dill and tarragon mornay sauce. Even the Eggs Benedict get a makeover, this time Indian style. Soft poached eggs sit on a cucumber riata with spiced tomato and spinach salsa. The hollandaise sauce is flavoured with a Madras curry. So for a breakfast with a difference, GROW is also well worth a try! The restaurant is still in its development phase [as they say here; ‘soft opening’], and a few menu changes and or additions are likely over the next few months. However the initial menu tells you all you need to know, GROW is a great addition to the Bali dining scene, and most importantly offers something completely different!

What are the industry trends in Indonesia and the world?

No. 1: Sambel tumpang, also known as sambel lethok, is made of 50% fresh tempe and 50% semangit tempe (very ripe tempe). Added to this is fried tofu, and small slices or chunks of beef, and other local spices. It is mixed with a variety of steamed vegetables.

Tempe - a Superfood Indonesia is home to some of the world’s most powerful superfoods. Tempe (spelled without the ‘h’ in Indonesian), one of its staples, has often been h a i l e d a s ‘Indonesia’s gift to the world’ – starring in gourmet burgers and salads from Melbourne to Manhattan. The archipelago is also blessed with a basketful of other miracle crops, such as cassava, coconut and jackfruit. In the lead up to UFF17, we’ll explore Indonesian superfoods which have not only fuelled the nation for centuries, but which also have a very bright future in the global market. To launch the series we sat down over a tasty grilled tempe lunch with Professor Winarno, the world’s foremost expert on the soybean superfood. Professor Winarno, can you please tell us a bit about the history of tempe and how it’s produced? At the International Conference on Tempe in 2015, conducted in Yogyakarta in Central Java, it was confirmed by historians and food scientists that tempe was first reported in the beginning of the 18th century in the ancient book of Centhini/ Serat Centini, from the Kingdom of Mataram Sultanate, which covered Yogyakarta, and Central and East Java. The conference declared that tempe is an indigenous Indonesian fermented food. It is a dominant food that characterizes Indonesia, just as kimchi does for Korea or miso and nato does for Japan. There are many methods of tempe production, but basically it is made from soaked, de-hulled soybeans which are inoculated with certain mould spores or starter culture, which in Indonesian is called laru tempe or ragi tempe. Many microorganisms are involved, including mould and bacteria, but the most important species for making tempe is Rhizapus oligosporus. The inoculated soybean is then wrapped in banana leaves and left overnight at room temperature. The fungus begins to grow and radiates heat, and the final result is a compact block of whitish tempe. It is now ready to be cooked.

The annual Indonesian soybean crop is 2.6-3 million tons. 70% is imported, and only 30% is produced locally. As much as 60% of Indonesia’s soybean crop is used as the basic ingredients for tempe. Most tempe is produced in cottage industries or home industries – only a few medium scale industries produce tempe. The average consumption of tempe in Indonesia is 7.2 kg/capita/year, or only 0.14 kg / week /capita. This is less than the average consumption of tofu, which is 10kg/capita/year. Several countries have become familiar with tempe, such as USA, Europe, ASEAN nations, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Through the Indonesian Tempe Movement, the promotion of tempe internationally has made significant progress. It is popular among vegetarians across the world, due to its simple production, affordability, natural characteristics, and high nutritional value, particularly its vitamin B12, protein, and bio-active content. Interestingly, the technology used to produce tempe could be applied to other legumes. Professor Winarno, are there any environmental concerns surrounding tempe production? Most local tempe is not produced in a clean and healthy environment, and it usually requires plenty of water and energy for heating/steaming and de-hulling. The waste water is usually disposed of in rivers or sewage, and this pollutes the environment. As 70% of Indonesia’s soybeans are still imported, producing tempe locally is still a great problem. How can we support local production? Ideally, tempe products should be made from local organic soybeans, but in reality the cost of production is still much higher than importing them. Since tempe is a safe, nutritious and affordable food, it is considered to be a strategic investment for nutritional development, health, culture, and the national economy. For those reasons, local governments or the central government should address and solve the challenges faced by producers. Tempe holds a variety of developmental possibilities not only in the culinary field but also in the fields of medicine, the agricultural industry and bioprocessing. Tempe is Indonesia’s unique treasure. Professor Winarno, what are your three favorite tempe dishes?

No. 2: Tempe bacem, which is cooked in a brown sugar solution and other local spices. The end product is of intermediate moisture and brown in color, with an excellent texture. No. 3: Sambel goreng tempe, which is a reasonably dried sliced tempe with local spices and a lot of hot red pepper. Professor Winarno’s Sambal Tumpang Recipe 10 servings ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

500g tempe semangit (prepare two days before use) 750ml meat broth/stock 8 shallots 6 gloves garlic 4 candlenuts 6 red chillies 5 kaffir lime leaves 4 bay leaves 1 piece lesser galangal 15 Cayenne peppers 1 piece galangal, crushed 1 teaspoon white sugar 1 teaspoon coriander powder ½ tea spoon pepper powder 750ml coconut milk

Ingredients: 1. Mix all ingredients (except galangal, coconut milk, bay leaves, and Cayenne pepper. Boil until the tempe is soft and fully cooked. Remove from the stove and puree. 2. Bring to the boil again, add bay leaves, Cayenne pepper, and galangal. Pour in the coconut milk, then boil until the tempe is fully cooked. Set aside. 3. Serve with rice, boiled vegetables, and fish crackers.

Bali: Ancient Rites in the Digital Age I have a 2.5 meters long row of Bali photo books in my library of Baliana, three quarters of which I have reviewed for this column. With the exception of picture books of the island published in the black and white era, I know of no other publication that shows the devotion, dignity, variety, spiritual depth and mesmerizing beauty of the Bali Hindu religious experience as stunningly as does Bali: Ancient Rites in the Digital Age. The book is a personal portfolio of the work of Ida Bagus Putra Adnyana between 2004 and 2015, a singularly intimate close up view of ritual activities that guide a Balinese from birth to death and into the thereafter. In compiling this album, the photographer has selected photographs that document rituals that few people – even Balinese themselves - have ever seen and most likely don’t even know exist. He puts the emphasis on the rare, infrequent, atavistic, Polynesianinfluenced ceremonies. If you have been lucky enough to have witnessed these unusual devotions, they have taken place in remote traditional villages of the island. Examples are hair-raising ritual practices such as those found in the pre-Hindu mountainous community of Trunyan in Bangli and the walled village of Tengenan in Karangasem, which are believed to have taken place for centuries. Fertility and coming of age initiation rites, conducted in secrecy, are often out of sight of fellow villagers. Sacred performances, such as the Baris and Rejang dances, are now very rarely seen. Besides Bali, there are few places of comparable size where ceremonial obligations hold such a sway over people’s lives, devoting a significant amount of their waking hours to an endless series of offerings, purifications, processions, dances and religious rites. These occasions are a wonderful opportunity to interact with the people on a special occasion. No one who has encountered a Balinese procession or religious rite is able to forget how the splendidly dressed participants so totally immerse themselves into the spirit of the proceedings. The rites take place in homes, rice fields, temple courtyards, village lanes, on city streets and by the sea. Scenes are crowded with piled offerings, banners, fantastic animal effigies, deafening gamelan orchestras and billows of incense smoke. All rituals arise from an agrarian culture with deep roots in Hinduism, Buddhism, animism and the veneration of ancestors. The rituals are as vital as ever today, even in the midst of modern Indonesia. The Foreword is a straightforward, ethnological discussion, written in Balinese English, that catalogs of the wide range of the island’s ritual activities – called yadnya - that are divided into five categories - rites for gods, rites for priests, rites for ancestors, rites of passage and rites for demons and the lower spirits. These include temple commemoration festivals, fasting and retreat ceremonies, parades to the sea to cleanse villages, special prayer days for the dead, nights of penance (sivaratri), harvest festivals (usaba), blood sacrifices, house deity and temple anniversaries (odalan), festivals dedicated to the art of woodcarving, percussion instruments and the birth of a goddess. Noteworthy among the book’s extraordinary photos: the whole courtyard of a pura dalem filled with 700 roast pigs; two-m-high offerings (banten tegeh) that are so heavy that women need slings to carry them; men deep in trance stabbing themselves with kris; combat between youths using rattan shields and whips made of thorny pandanus leaves; a boy and girl carried in the nyenuk thanksgiving ritual; an elderly pemangku riding a wooden hobby horse; a boy walking through red hot burning coconut husks; a noisy parade of blue-painted youths; an eerie gathering of 150 Barong dragon masks backed by a sea of Rangda witches; a spectacular 25-m-high bade cremation tower; bare breasted men bearing a corpse wrapped in bamboo; the reverent and solemn bathing of a corpse. A Balinese from a Brahmana priestly family, I. B. Adnyana is considered a first-rate classicist. Born in 1958 in Denpasar, he grew up attending Balinese rituals and brings an insider’s

knowledge to his subjects. As is evident in his images, he has been given special unimpeded access and privileged positions and angles. It’s highly unlikely that a Western photographer would ever be allowed to enter sacred inner courtyards and get this close to a venerable high priest. His subjects appear at ease and revealing of their inner emotions. It is as if his subjects are family members relaxed in the presence of another Balinese. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time to photograph with the greatest possible empathy and intimacy. Amidst all the confusion, he knows what is going on and is able to anticipate what is going to happen next. While other photographers are fiddling with their camera settings, he is ready to record the climax, the significant gesture or the moment when the trance state takes hold.

NC/Ns/G - 27 July 11

As Adnnyana’s remarkable images show, Bali Hindu ceremonies are carried out in sometimes starkly different ways in different parts of Bali. Besides the main religious festivals such as Galungan and Odalan, entirely different ceremonies are practiced in communities that have been inspired by their own folk histories which give rise to weird improvised costumes. Ceremonies also change in style in one locale over the years. The same ritual can also differ in scale - small, medium or large – depending on how much the sponsors can afford. The current trend is to make the event as grand as possible, particularly among Bali’s aristocratic houses (puri) who have always been champions of ritual grandeur with maximum visual impact. These huge lavish public displays - a sign of Bali’s rising middle class new found prosperity - were not as widespread just 10 years ago.

The subtitle “Ancient Rites in the Digital Age” is in reference to the fact that the Balinese enthusiastically use modern technology to support their ancient rituals. Loudspeakers, video cameras and social media are used to communicate and document ceremonies and temple festivals. (During the recent celebration of Pagerwesi, I saw a Balinese man sitting on temple steps in Cemagi village reading Sanskrit prayers on his smartphone.) The knowledgeable text is written by Diana Darling, a freelance writer and editor who has lived in Bali since 1980. The captions, some quite lengthy, provide essential information about the event, its participants, location and significance, details about the dress, objects as well as the specific Balinese names of offerings and paraphernalia. What a shame an index wasn’t included so the reader could look up specific rituals and ceremonies and be able to visit the locale where they take place.

This book is the last word in picture books about the modern-day ritual life of the Balinese, a rare glimpse into a world that tourists don’t see. In spite of its relatively small coffee table size, the page design and quality and clarity of the color plates meet the highest technical standards. Bali: Ancient Rites in the Digital Age serves as a reminder of the great diversity and endurance of Balinese culture in its many expressions. Along with the garish new buildings and traffic-congested roads, these archaic rituals are also an integral part of modern Bali. Bali: Ancient Rites in the Digital Age, text by Diana Darling, photographs by I. B. Putra Adnyana, ISBN 978-979-892-6310, hardcover, 176 pages, dimensions 23 cm x 21 cm.

Batik Workshop (20 – 24 March) Batik is indeed a major part of Indonesian culture and can be found all across the archipelago. Batik is in fact a technique of wax resist dyeing applied to whole cloth, or cloth made using this technique. Batik is made both by drawing dots and lines of the resist using a special tool or by printing the resist with a copper stamp. The applied wax resists dyes and allows the artist to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in different colours. It is an amazing process that has great results. You can get to see this process and learn all about cap batik made by using natural and chemical dyes when attending this workshop. The cultural aspect of batik will be a focus as the emphasis is on maintaining a unity with nature by creating art which is a fundamental part of Indonesian culture. By having a deeper understanding of the cultural values this workshop will definitely highlight the importance of batik in Indonesia’s heritage. The cost of the workshop includes all materials and lunch. Recommended hotels will be given if needed. Do contact the telephone number or e-mail below for the location.

Say What? Question: I’m fairly new to the Bali expat scene, and although I have made a lot of casual acquaintances, I have few close, trustworthy friends. I own my own business, and I am trying to balance my time between work, which is a long-term creative project, taking care of myself (cooking, exercising, etc.), and of course making friends. I also recently met someone who is in many ways really great. He’s fun, attractive, considerate and fascinating, but he’s also ridiculously intense. He wants to get involved romantically and has bent over backwards telling me that he doesn’t want to just have sex. I’m the new kid on the block. I am trying to create a life here for myself, and I’m feeling overwhelmed. I like him a lot and want to be friends and hang out, but I need to be able to get my life on track and meet more people before I can even think about getting involved with anyone romantically. Is there any way I can avoid all the serious stuff with this guy and somehow just do fun, silly things together and maybe sleep with each other for a while? I suspect the answer is no, but I thought I’d ask. Dr. ZZ: It is good that you are figuring out your own limits and desires and evaluating the energy and time (not much) that you have to invest in a romantic relationship. Can you sleep with this guy without all the messy emotional stuff? Probably not! You can tell him you’re attracted to him and want to possibly have sex with him, and that you’re worried that he will want that to turn into a serious romantic relationship when you are not 100% ready for one. Chances are, however, he will hear only what he wants to hear and hope to turn your sexual relationship into true love, leaving open the possibility that he’ll probably end up feeling hurt or angry when it doesn’t work out that way. Your best bet is to take him at his word. He has told you that he doesn’t want to just sleep with you; so assume he’s right. “Casual” relationships require a high level of manners and caring about the other person to pull off. Moreover, not

next-door neighbor was periodically mimicking my calls to my cat. My response was to call out the neighbor on it and to pretty much stop speaking in my place at anything above a whisper. Still, the neighbor proceeded to frequently mimic her meow and to mimic my laughter. being ready for a relationship with someone right now generally means you are not ready for - and don’t want - a relationship with this particular fellow. All the rest is fluff. If you were feeling it, you’d be feeling it. To hang out and get involved “as friends” with this man is to construct a friendship based on a falsehood - a friendship that consists of him waiting for you to be ready for more at some point, and your keeping him at bay as a spare. Should you meet and want to date someone else down the line, this first fellow is apt to feel hurt, and you will wish that he were better able to accept rejection gracefully. You may really truly like each other and care about each other, but your best option is to figure out a way to be friends. If you change your mind later, and he is still attracted to you, the two of you will find a way to work it out then. Question: When I came back to my apartment yesterday, I heard what could only be mimicry of me and my cat coming from the neighbors directly downstairs. My cat has a very distinctive and easily mimicked meow, and I’m sure that the neighbor was mocking the things I usually say to her when I walk in the door. By no means am I a noisy neighbor, and my cat is loud only at feeding times and when I first get home. But this is a problem I have dealt with this once before when a previous

Now, I’m dealing with this same issue again, and calling out the neighbor only makes for a hostile environment. Do you have any suggestions how to handle this? I really don’t want to live in a war zone again. Thank you. Dr. ZZ: Neighbors are neighbors, and in this case, you may be expecting privacy in ways in which you and your cat are not offering it. Even though your cat is inside and it’s just a cat’s meow (“Who could ever have a problem with that, right?”) there are reasons why others may make fun of your cat and find its sounds disturbing. In this respect, your cat’s meow is just a random noise that finds its way through the walls into another person’s ears. It’s a disturbing noise and, although it isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of thing, neither is your neighbor shouting out to you every time you come home and the cat has been crying. The next time you come home and hear your neighbor mocking your cat’s meow, try ignoring it. The neighbor is obviously attempting to make a point. Let him blow off a little steam, and keep living your life as if it never happened. Then, put a heart-shaped note on his door, saying, “Sorry about my cat! Bella sends her regards.” The issue will either resolve itself readily, or else it will turn into a screaming match between you and your neighbor. Try killing it with kindness, and if that doesn’t work for you, prepare to move.

BIO-LIVING CELL THERAPY Recently I was invited to Victory Wellness Centre in Renon to try out a treatment. I really had no idea what to expect and discovered after arriving that they specialize in one feature treatment. Bio-Living Cell (commonly known as BLC) Therapy, is an Australian patented treatment which can be used to improve inner health so it will be reflected in healthier skin and hair. Diana, the founder of Victory and BLC Therapy, a l m o s t developed skin cancer after being exposed to many harsh cosmetics and invasive procedures deemed ‘safe’ in the beauty industry. In desperation, Diana searched far and wide for a cure. She innovated BLC Therapy, a treatment which uses 100% natural ingredients to treat skin and hair from within. Following this, Victory streamlined its product line to focus on BLC Therapy. They now have three different Centres with fully trained and friendly therapists What is BLC Therapy? After being ushered into the consultation room the therapy was explained to me. This completely noninvasive treatment using ionizer equipment and a natural protein serum from Australia has many benefits for not only beauty but health. It can rejuvenate the skin from acne, rashes, pigmentation, eczema, dermatitis and tighten the skin and muscles to give a more youthful appearance. It can also help with hair regrowth and improve general health. A surprise to me were the photos of people with scoliosis, the curved spine actually started to straighten out! How does BLC Therapy work? It is quite hard to believe that one treatment can help so many skin and hair problems. However, I learnt that BLC Therapy works from the inside out to address the underlying cause of the signs of aging. It optimizes the body’s wellbeing and harnesses its self-repair system to enable the skin and hair to look healthy and young again, delivering long-lasting results. BLC Therapy achieves the above by optimizing and restoring the body’s inner health to repair tissues or cells where needed. This is done by infusing protein rich serum via the ion system to stimulate regeneration of new cells and tissues. The pattern of rolling follows the muscular fibers, arranging them in their proper place and gradually correcting the posture and muscles. The use of ionizer improves blood circulation and helps to release pressured nerves and tight muscles. Hence, BLC Therapy can treat chronic back, neck and shoulder aches. My BLC Therapy experience My problem I wanted to address is dermatitis on my scalp, which I’ve had for over ten years. After trying everything natural without results I was very interested to try out Bio-Living Cell Therapy. Victory has a small magnifying tool hooked up to the computer to see the skin close up. I directed them to the small sores on my scalp, which looked very red and surrounded by inflamed skin. It’s pretty scary looking at your scalp magnified about a thousand times. They were able to photograph the areas and save the images on the computer. Then they used a small hand camera to photograph the skin also.

The next step was to have my hair washed then I was escorted upstairs to a spacious treatment room. Here Ketut took photos of my face from all angles. After this she handed me a white smock to put on. I laid down on the bed and Ketut cleansed my face twice then put on the peelable exfoliator to give me thoroughly clean skin. She then gave me a small metal rod wrapped in a wet paper towel to hold in my hand to ground the current then instructed me to lie on my side. She sprayed my scalp, upper arms and upper back and added serum to the skin. Then she began rolling the metal tool over the skin in quick smooth movements repeatedly over the side of my scalp, neck, shoulder and upper arm. The process was completely pain-free. This procedure lasted for several minutes. Then she asked me to turn on the other side and repeated the process. When the sides were finished she asked me to lie face up and rolled the tool over my face and neck.

When Ketut finished she left the room for a couple of minutes and applied a cold mask over my face and smoothed it into place saying this is a royal jelly mask to soothe the skin on my face. “Now relax for thirty minutes”, she said before leaving the room to allow me to have a little “cat nap”. Half an hour later Ketut returned and removed the mask and wiped the excess product off my face then applied a moisturizer cream. Before getting dressed she wanted to take photos of my face again. My result Returning to the consultation room, more photos were taken of my scalp. Now I was shown the before and after photos. My face showed subtle but noticeable differences of tightened skin. The sores on my scalp were now smaller and less red. The difference is amazing considering it was done in only 90 minutes!

C/He/G-12 Oct. 16

Diana the owner agreed to gift me six sessions of weekly treatments to completely heal my scalp and show me proof that the ionizer equipment really does work. After my third session they took photos again and compared them to the ones before any treatments. There was visible proof that the sores were now smaller and less red and the blisters no longer held fluid, they were drier and less itchy. After the sixth session photos were taken of my face again. There was a remarkable improvement in skin tone with firmer skin with a lifting effect especially on the jaw and neck area. To r e g r o w y o u r h a i r, t r e a t pigmentation, acne, eczema, scoliosis, improve your skin and rejuvenate your inner health I recommend BLC therapy. The number of sessions required for treatment results vary according to individuals. I’ve seen positive results in only six weeks! For a free consultation contact: Victory Wellness Centre, Jl. We start this month’s This Sporting News with the sad news of the death of Bali based MMA fighter Casey Suire, in other news the Bali Rugby Club’s new committee and their activities for 2017 and a new event in May, Dragon Boat racing, part of the local government’s push to put Bali on the the global sports calendar. MARTIAL ARTS NEWS Casey Suire We sadly report that respected mixed martial artist Casey Suire was killed in a tragic motorbike accident in the early hours of the 5th of February last week in Canggu. Initial reports say he was killed on impact. Suire was an up and coming fighter with a 6-2 pro record. He signed with ONE Championship in 2013. Originally from South Louisiana, Suire was sent to Indonesia by an international oil and gas company after a stint in Africa, and it was there in Balikpapan and later Jakarta that he began studying martial arts at Jakarta’s Combined Martial Arts Academy (CMAA) , then at the age of 33 years, a relatively late age Suire decided to concentrate on MMA. He went on to forge a reputation as a fierce competitor in numerous disciplines and is undefeated in professional boxing and just two losses in pro MMA. Success in the ring led Suire to resign from his day job, and focus fulltime on MMA. Suire had only moved back to Bali a week before the accident after spending time in the United States and was a key member of the highly respected Bali Muay Thai & MMA, where he had been working with former Bellator 135-pound challenger Anthony Engelen. “Thank you brother for all the training sessions we had together,” fellow ONE Championship fighter Anthony Engelen said via Facebook. As Suire once commented to the Jakarta Globe ““I refuse to live a boring, ordinary life just to arrive at death safely,” said Suire, drawing inspiration from his sister Dorie. Dorie Suire figured in a tragic car crash that claimed her life. She was 17-years old. “Everyone experiences loss in their lives and unfortunately, I lost my sister Dorie,” recalls Suire. “She wasn’t able to live out her dreams. Her passing made me realize how short life is and it has driven me to make the most out of each opportunity presented to me.”

Dragon Boat Racing has a rich fabric of ancient ceremonial, ritualistic and religious traditions, and thus, the modern

competitive aspect is but one small part of this complex water craftsmanship. The use of dragon boats for racing and dragons are believed by scholars, sinologists, and anthropologists to have originated in southern central China more than 2500 years ago, during the same era when the games of ancient Greece were being established at Olympia. Dragon boat racing has been practiced continuously since this period as the basis for annual water rituals and festival celebrations and for the traditional veneration of the Chinese dragon water deity. The celebration was an important part of the ancient Chinese agricultural society, celebrating the summer rice planting. Dragon boat racing was historically situated in the Chinese subcontinent’s southern-central “rice bowl”; where there were rice paddies, so were there dragon boats. Nowadays Dragon Boat racing is held all over the world with regular World Championships and Club Championships. The Badung Dragon Boat Race will be held south of the airport over a distance of 500 mts under the rules of the International Dragon Boat Federation.Teams from Australia,New Zealand,Hong Kong,Iran,UK and Malaysia will be participating. TRAINING Due to the holiday season, regular weekly activities are suspended. This Sporting Life will update for the next edition.

Local News One Championship Veteran Casey Suire Dies in Motorcycle Accident in Bali The 40-year-old American who was living and training out of Bali, Indonesia, posted a 6-2 pro MMA record in his five-plus year fight career. A native of Lafayette, La., Suire fought his last five bouts for One Championship, most recently earning a split decision over Xie Bin on Aug. 27. According to local media reports out of Bali, Suire lost control of his Honda Vario on Sunday evening on Batu Bolong road in the Canggu neighborhood, flying off the scooter and going head first into a street gutter, where he was body was found unresponsive by local police. Local authorities have alleged that alcohol may have played a role in the accident. One Championship president Victor Cui confirmed the news Monday on Facebook. “I first met Casey a little over 4 years ago at a press conference. He’d already started to build a reputation in Indonesia as an exciting athlete and he continued to prove that in his career with One,” wrote Cui. “He was talented but not arrogant, he was a focused athlete but you could see in his interactions with his teammates that he had an equal passion for life. An incredible human being, I wish I’d had more time with Casey, a little more time to get to know him myself.” [sherdog.com February 6, 2017]

Bali Suitcase Murderer Heather Mack Confesses She Alone Killed Her Mother Nearly two years after she and her boyfriend were sentenced in her mother’s savage murder, teen killer Heather Mack claims she alone was responsible for the horrific crime. “Since I was a kid, I’ve heard the truth sets you free, the truth sets you free. I never understood,” Mack, now 21, claims in shocking new videos uploaded to YouTube. “But I’m Heather Mack, and I want to be set free. I don’t want to live in a lie anymore.” Though Mack’s baby daddy, Tommy Schaefer, was ordered to 18 years in Bali prison for allegedly killing his girlfriend’s mother, Sheila von Wiese, and stuffing her body into a suitcase, the troubled Chicago native insists her former boyfriend is “innocent.” “I don’t regret killing my mother. And as evil as that may sound, that’s my reality…But I regret bringing Tommy into it,” she says in the clips. “I regret being selfish. I regret trapping an innocent person into this.” After Schaefer, now 23, refused to help her hire a $50,000 hit man, Mack alleges she placed incriminating text messages into his phone, and later convinced him to accompany her family on an exotic vacation to Bali, Indonesia. While in Bali, Mack says she murdered her mom alone, then forced Schaefer to help her hide the evidence. “I told Tommy that if he did not help me clean the room and get rid of the body, that I would tell the police that he did it,” she explains. “I would pay money to get him arrested. So he helped me clean it. The only thing Tommy is not innocent of is hiding the body.” [radaronline.com February 6, 2017]

Tigerair Australia Scraps Plans to Resume Indonesia Flights Tigerair Australia has formally abandoned plans to resume flights to Indonesia after authorities there denied the Australian LCC the necessary approvals needed to resume flights to Denpasar on Friday, February 3, 2017. “The Indonesian authorities have informed Tigerair that they require an alternative regulatory solution for Tigerair’s operations to Bali,” it said in a statement. “This solution would take at least six months to implement and would compromise the airline’s ability to offer low-cost airfares to travellers to Bali.” Given this recent development, Tigerair Australia said it had since taken the formal decision to permanently withdraw from the Australia-Bali market. Indonesia’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) barred Tigerair from carrying out flights to Bali in mid-Janaury citing concerns about one-way tickets being sold as well the use of wet-leased B737-800 aircraft. Accused ‘Angry’ No Help Came for Bali Cop The boyfriend of Australian woman Sara Connor says he is “angry” at those who failed to help the Bali police officer whom he fought with on Kuta Beach and then left “passed out” in the sand. “Many people have said that they came and saw the body on the beach. But no-one managed to call anyone to help the guy,” British man David Taylor told reporters at Denpasar Court on Wednesday. Connor and Taylor are on trial over the death of Wayan Sudarsa whose bloodied body was discovered covered in sand in the early hours of August 17.Taylor has said he became embroiled in a fight with Mr Sudarsa after he confronted the cop about Connor’s purse that went missing on the beach. The pair fought, with Taylor claiming he acted in selfdefence when he hit Mr Sudarsa with binoculars and a glass bottle. He left the police officer lying on the sand, telling Connor that Mr Sudarsa was “just passed out”.The court, however, has heard that while the couple were on their way back to their hotel, Mr Sudarsa likely lay dying and could have been saved. Dr Dudut Rustyadi who performed the autopsy on Mr Sudarsa said it would have taken the police officer anywhere between two to four hours to die from his head injuries. It was “possible”, the doctor told Denpasar Court on Wednesday, that had Mr Sudarsa received help during that period, he could have been saved. [APP February 2, 2017]

Bali Tourists Get out of Taxi, Driver Steps on Gas Before They Can Get Their Stuff from the Trunk A taxi driver has been arrested in Bali for making off with a trunk-full stuff belonging to his passengers. Taxi driver Alfridus Tunais, 22, allegedly ditched his passengers, an Australian family, in Kuta on Tuesday with a reported Rp 300 million worth of stuff still in the taxi. Amazingly enough, the Australian family reported the driver to the police and the police apprehended the man within hours. Kuta Police Commissioner I Wayan Sumara explained that the Australian family of three were taking the taxi after shopping at Discovery Mall and were headed towards Mega Hotel Boutique on Jl. By Pass Ngurah Rai. While they were driving, the driver apparently changed course and started heading towards Denpasar. “The victims began to question the suspect. You see, the victims usually payed Rp 40k for this trip from the mall, but this time it was Rp 60k,” Sumara said in a press conference on Thursday afternoon, as quoted by Nusa Bali. Feeling cheated, the family asked the driver to stop. Turns out they were all the way in south Denpasar on Jl. Tukad Yeh Aya. When the family moved to take their shopping from the trunk, the driver just stepped on the gas and fled, according to Sumara. The family immediately reported the driver, who was tracked down to an address in Ungasan. Though he wasn’t in Ungasan, police say they found him hiding out in a boardinghouse nearby in Jimbaran. From Tunais, police say they confiscated evidence in the form of two iPhone 6s, a Samsung Note, gold jewelry, and other valuables. The driver is facing charges carrying up to five years in prison, according to Sumara. [ Coconuts Bali February 4, 2017] Tabanan Hit and Run Victim Killed after Car Plunges Down 50-Meter Drop Police are currently hunting the driver of a Kijang Innova involved in a fatal hit and run that occurred in Tabanan, Bali on Sunday night. At around 11:15 pm on the Denpasar-Gilimanuk By Pass in Peken Village, Tabanan, the Kijang moved to pass a Daihatsu Xenia, driven by Ahmad Fahmi. But when a car came from the opposite direction, the Kijang allegedly grazed the Daihatusu, which swerved off the road, plunging down a 50-meter drop, according to a Tribun Bali report. The Kijang apparently hit another vehicle, a Suzuki pick-up parked on the shoulder of the road, before fleeing the scene, allegedly turning back towards Denpasar. Fahmi was rushed to Tabanan General Hospital but reportedly died en route. Tabanan Traffic Police Chief Insp. I Ketut Mastra Budaya says police are currently working on identifying the driver of the Kijang. [Coconuts Bali February 6, 2017] German Man Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison in Bali for Trying to Set Up a Do-It-Yourself Methamphetamine Lab A German national, Benjamin Bailer (38), has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined RP. 1 billion by the Denpasar Court after being convicted of having 0.71 grams of methamphetamines in his possession. The State News Agency Antara reports that the sentence given by the panel of judges was less than the seven years behind bars sought by State Prosecutors. The Court ruled that Bailer was guilty of possessing narcotics or their precursors in violation of the 2009 anti-narcotics law. Speaking through his lawyer, Bailer immediately accepted the Court’s judgment signifying he would not exercise his right of appeal. Bailer was arrested by Anti-narcotics Police (BNN) at 8:30 pm on August 22, 2016, at his home on Jalan Sumer in North Kuta and discovered with two “clips” of methamphetamines weighing 0.71 grams The German later told police that he obtained the drugs from a friend and was in the process of trying to manufacture the drug in a home laboratory for his personal use. Bailer studied how to manufacture the drug from the Internet and had accumulated the equipment and chemical materials needed to start production. [balidiscovery.com February 3, 2017] Bali ATMs Hit by Thieves Within just a 24-hour time period, two ATMs in Bali were reportedly burglarized using identical methods on Thursday. Tens of millions of rupiah were taken out of the ATMs, tapping into the machines’ programming, so police suspect that the same thief hit both machines and that the thief is part of a professional ATM theft syndicate. Both ATMs were reportedly located in gas stations. One on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, East Denpasar, and the other on Jl. By Pass I Gusti Ngurah Rai, South Kuta. At both sites, the perpetrator damaged the lock and hinge to open the ATM. Once open, the perp had access to the machine’s data and could easily remove cash, according to reports. “Not just any perpetrator could do this (access the program data). The people who acted in these two places are professionals,” Tribun Bali quoted an unidentified police source as saying on Sunday. From the Hayam Wuruk ATM, Rp 82 million was removed from the machine, while from the one in Nusa Dua, Rp 14 million was taken, Tribun reported. [Coconuts Bali January 30, 2017]
