Can the World’s Billionaires Save our Planet? ‘How dare you?’ snarled teenage Greta Thunberg to the world at large when she spoke at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York last year and proceeded to castigate present generations for failing to protect and safeguard a safe and eco-friendly future for people of her generation; for allowing climate change to go beyond easy repair; for sitting on our duffs while whole eco-systems disappeared and vulnerable species became threatened with mass extinction. Greta has a point. However she overlooks the fact that all these dire consequences and calamities in progress started earlier than the generation of the Baby Boomers, which is now practically the oldest living generation at whose feet she can lay blame. Perhaps it’s a moot point and she has a right to throw it in our faces as the Boomers as a collective entity became the ‘force majeure’ that failed to stop the inevitable downward spiral of our current ecological condition. Individually we experienced the beginnings of an emerging awareness in the 1970s when the Age of Aquarius dawned. That’s why some of us created a few bandwagons like the Green Movement, the Harmony and Understanding Communes, the organic farming collectives, etc. We were so busy liberating ourselves from the constraints of the 50s and 60s ‘old’ morality and mentality and so caught up in trying to create a new, i.e. more spiritual, world paradigm alongside our technological accomplishments that we lost sight of the lurking dangers to our eco-systems. As the years passed and we grew up and moved into the next phases of our mature lives, we had a chance to vote into power those that could have made a difference. Alas, politics being what they are and combined with individual greed for power and wealth - and collective apathy - it seems to be always a matter of compromise, accommodation, negotiation, concession, finding middle ground and conceding to lesser goals. So the good, the green and the social causes frequently had to go to the wall and cede the way to politically appeasing issues for the electorate. The pocketbook of the constituent is a mighty influencer and the causes benefitting nature, the environment and the social good are always more expensive and tend to get shunted to the advantage of lower taxes, the mirage of universal employment and continued industrial and technological progress. We still see plenty of that in action all over the world. And we should not be proud that our laissez faire-laissez aller attitudes led us to these dire results. Yes, Greta, we hear you. And we admire your spunk and audacity even as we think you’re a bit over the top when you accuse us of stealing your childhood. We also hear the very veiled but implicit criticism that we do not deserve to survive because of what we, collectively, have done to your home planet. It is indeed cringe worthy. Even more so when we contemplate what we leave behind for our children and future generations. Does Humanity Deserve to Survive? Whether our home planet can be saved is one of the salient questions. Piggybacking on that is the question whether humanity

deserves to survive. That implies the idea that, if we do not deserve to survive as a human race, we automatically assume that our children and other future generations will continue our business as usual mentality and are therefore also not worthy to survive. That’s grossly unfair to Greta and other likeminded waifs. But we need to let this young generation show their mettle and give them a chance to step in where we left off. Yes, it’s getting us off the hook in a way but blaming us falls short of letting us help with solutions.

Ben Delo thinks that the youngest generation feels disenfranchised even though a vast and exciting future lies ahead for them if they can navigate the challenges and opportunities posed by new technologies in the upcoming century. ‘In order to safeguard that extraordinary future for our descendants’, he says, ‘we must act now because we are at a critical moment to do so. We’ve never been in this position before: with the power to destroy the future, but not necessarily the wisdom to wield that power responsibly.’

I am reminded of my old boss whose favourite saying was ‘Don’t bring me problems, bring me solutions.’ Boomers, Millennials, Gen-Xrs and whatever other denominals still to come, can work collectively to formulate solutions and enact them. Some may be simple, others farfetched but one thing stares us in the face: it is past midnight and the glass shoe has shattered because not one solution will fit all. What we’re doing and not doing will determine how and if we survive. Paying for the future. Since governments are always notoriously short of money because they’re spending it in all the wrong places, we need to look in another direction to augment the financial wherewithal to finance big projects like combating climate change, preserving the world’s natural forests, cleaning up our oceans and planet. Governments will always claim they are short of money for these ambitious projects, but the world’s billionaires aren’t. They have so much money they and their heirs can never spend it all. ‘Billions and billions of stars’ said the late Carl Sagan, ‘so many we can never explore them all’. That’s how you can view the collective wealth of the world’s billionaires. Emulating Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, other altruistic Midases are already funding projects to benefit humanity with mega bucks. Ben Delo, a British mathematician and founder of the crypto currency trading company BitMEX has pledged to give over half of his fortune away to ‘fund work to safeguard future generations and protect the long-term

In order for our current civilisation to survive, says Delo, we need to plan beyond our own lifetimes, we need to work together and take action to reduce the risk from specific dangers and catastrophic global threats like natural pandemics or activities that can cause or accelerate human extinction, nuclear war, extreme climate change, synthetic biology (think biological weapons) or preparing for dangers that don’t yet exist such as metamorphic AI and its big risks of potential misuse. Humanity is facing far too many risks in this turbulent and transformative period in our history. Now is the time to start to mitigate them and think about the long-term challenges we face as a species and think about the long term future of the world. Putting his money where his mouth is, Delo so far has funded research into the prevention of nuclear wars and pandemic diseases as well as academic research into shaping the very long-term future. A lot can be done to protect future generations from the stupidity of our generation’s actions but it is high time to get on with it and for all living generations to work together to create some realistic and far reaching consequences. If we cannot get official governments to take decisive action, we need to look to the billionaire philanthropists to step up to the plate. There is no consensus on when or if the Age of Aquarius has made its debut but all agree that its length will be around 2,160 years. If we want to experience some of that we do need to turn the cart around now. Greta, go meet Mr. Delo. GREENSPEAK Toads in Love The nights are so quiet in the dry season. I don’t realize how much I miss the honk of frogs and toads until they crank up again after the first rain. After resting for so many months through the heat it must be wonderful to feel mud and wet grass between those splayed toes. I remember a few years ago coming home one day to find a large plastic supermarket bag hanging on the pantry doorknob, pulsing slightly and emitting strange noises. Upon examination it proved to contain about two kilograms of copulating toads. I went looking for Wayan hoping for an explanation and found her in the laundry.

The toad is not a pretty animal. These ones are a mustardy greenish brown colour, depending on their mood, and liberally peppered with black. They are lumpish and have little spines on their thick skins. Another unattractive feature is the powerful toxin they exude from glands in the neck and the back legs. This effective defense mechanism causes predators to drop the toad instantly and retreat, foaming at the mouth, as generations of my dogs have experienced. Nyoman reports that after handling these toads, people will sometimes break out in a rash around the lips. Unsurprisingly, they have no natural enemies except the Javanese spitting cobra.

A few days later, strings of black eggs can be seen suspended between pond plants and a little while afterward they hatch into tadpoles. This is party time for the fish, snakes and birds that consume them in huge numbers. It’s a wonder any survive to serenade me through the next rainy season. Why were the captured toads having an unseasonal orgy in the shopping bag? According to Don, when a large number of toads are gathered together the excitement triggers the appropriate hormones and mass breeding takes place, barometric pressure notwithstanding. And they were probably that interesting mustard colour because they were too hot, he added accusingly as if it was all my fault.

“Wayan, there is a bag of toads in the kitchen,” I announced. “Yes, Ibu,” she agreed, hanging up the towels to dry. Apparently the topic did not merit discussion. I went back to have another look. They were still at it, hunched in unlovely pairs on top of one another and glaring at me from indignant little black eyes. It transpired that a friend of mine with a large garden had found the nocturnal cacophony disturbing. She’d asked her gardener to collect all the toads he could find and prepare them for transmigration. Wayan’s husband Nyoman happened to come along just then on an errand and was entrusted with the cargo of amphibians. He was instructed to release them in some convenient waterway, but he had brought them home instead. “They eat a lot of mosquitoes,” he pointed out.

Toads play a critical role in Bali’s food chain, helping to control many pests in the rice fields. The pesticides used in the rice and vegetable fields kill off the toad’s natural prey. In conditions when there are not enough insects the females don’t develop eggs, so the toad populations are declining in Bali and elsewhere. And of course their habitat is swiftly shrinking.

I enjoy toad noises in the night and we have plenty of mosquitoes to share, so we distributed them around the garden and ponds. But the toads immediately disappeared and the nights were even more quiet than usual. Apart from discovering one grumpy newcomer inside a shoe and another in the shower, they all seem to have vanished. I called Don Wells, Ubud’s authority on amphibians and birds. Where had two kilograms of toads gone? It seems Bufo melanosticus or the Asian Spiny Toad is a shy creature, preferring to spend daylight hours in burrows or under piles of leaves. At night they roam to hunt. Tracking movements in the dark, they snap up anything that moves, as long as the size is manageable. Toads have been observed to swallow scorpions and centipedes even while the desperate prey is in the act of stinging them. Baby mice, reptiles and snakes, worms, spiders and all kinds of garden pests are devoured by these eating machines, which spit out only the hairy, poisonous caterpillars.

Sometimes I encounter a toad while gardening, and it’s always amazing to witness how invisible quite a large toad can be while sitting on a pile of mulch just a few inches away. A couple of times I’ve inadvertently trod on one in the dark. As my toes curl around the flaccid shape a signal races to my brain wondering, “What the hell is that???” I’m sure the toad feels the same. We part company a split second later with great mutual relief. I remember one specimen in the highlands of Malaysia many years ago that was so large I thought it was an oversized lawn ornament… until a single giant leap took it into the jungle five metres away. At the end of the rainy season when the temperature and barometric pressure are just right, Bufo melanosticus begins to get that gleam in its eyes. This is when the males crank up the volume on the love songs, filling the night with loud croaks and honks. Romantically inclined females are irresistibly drawn to the music, hopping through the wet grass toward the torrid affair that awaits them. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. They pair up with shameless haste

In the dry season Bufo melanosticus hangs out in piles of leaves and loose earth, emerging once in a while for a snack. Now that the rains have begun I’m seeing toads in the garden again. And last night the temperature and barometric pressure must have been perfect for toad love. The darkness was raucous with a mounting chorus of amorous amphibians in my ponds. In my little corner of Bali at least, the show will go on.

Chainsaw Massacres One of the very first scientific facts I remember learning at school was about our close relationship with trees. Even at that young age I was deeply moved by the knowledge that we breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide while trees convert carbon dioxide back to oxygen. The health of our planet is essential for our very existence and trees form a very important part of the planet’s health. So why do people keep cutting down trees? I love trees and, having travelled to other Indonesian islands, I am distressed to see that where the trees have gone the land is rapidly turning to desert, there are severe water shortages and people are poor and starving. I am also saddened to find that most people just don’t see it. I once asked a highly regarded tourism figure in Bali what it was that made Bali a place attractive to visitors. “The people” he said. “Yes and what else?” “The culture.” “Yes and what else?” He started to flounder. “The beaches” I prompted. “Yes, the beaches” he agreed “Though they are not the best in the world so what else is there in Bali?” He was totally lost now. “People are fascinated by volcanoes” I offered. He didn’t much agree with that. “One of the most important factors is that this is a tropical island.” I suggested. Well, yes, he could see that. “...and the things that make it feel tropical are the reefs and the vegetation.” I suggested that if people keep cutting down trees at the rate they are, very soon Bali will not be a tropical paradise anymore. Sadly he couldn’t understand my point of view at all. I live in Sanur and for me one of the most wonderful things about Sanur is its old trees planted by forward thinking people many years ago. Unfortunately in recent years they have been disappearing one by one. The continual removal of many landmark trees is, I suggest, destroying Sanur’s greatest asset. The trees outside the Hyatt, La Taverna and The Village still remain, thank goodness, but for the most part the main street of

Sanur is steadily becoming hotter and more of a concrete Jungle. The recent loss of one of the most beautiful trees I’ve seen in Bali, in the driveway of the Griya Santrian Hotel, was particularly tragic. By cutting down trees the people are destroying what is their most important asset, the beauty of Bali. So why am I bringing up the subject of trees? The answer is simple. For many years I have dealt with land developers, architects and maintenance people who create reasons to justify cutting down trees. Whether they universally hate trees I don’t know but it certainly appears that they do. Perhaps there is some deep seated desire to control rather than work with the environment, they want trees but only where they put them. Land developers nearly always want to clear all the trees from any land they develop. Trying to persuade them not to can be very difficult. This is important to consider if you are building a house or even adding an extension. Trees grow quickly in Bali but it will still take 30 or 40 years for them to reach full maturity. If you have a piece of land with beautiful trees on it try and work with the trees if you can. If your builder says they must come down find another builder. I once met a very switched on architect in Brisbane who would design his developments around the trees that existed on the site. When issuing a contract to the contractors he would include a clause that gave hefty financial penalties for every tree that was “accidentally” lost. He saved many beautiful trees, trees that really made his developments very special. Even then he had a continuous battle trying to get development contractors to obey his instructions. Living with trees is not difficult and with a few simple considerations at the design stage they can cause no problems and provide a better environment round your home. • Coconut trees drop coconuts so don’t situate them near driveways, garages or with public areas underneath

Trees drop leaves, consider this when positioning a swimming pool. Old trees may get termites in them so branches may fall off. Overhanging branches should be checked and removed if they become dangerous. If you cut off an original growth branch and a new one grows in its place just beware that regrowth branches are not as strong and are more likely to break off than the original growth. Trees overhanging alang alang (thatched) roofs tend to rot the alang alang fairly quickly.

The other day I walked down a narrow alleyway towards the beach. It was very hot and dusty made worse by the bare concrete of high walls down each side. I turned a corner and found myself in a beautiful road. It was suddenly cool and shady under the large trees that lined it. The contrast was amazing. So why do people keep cutting down trees? Kulture Kid What does ‘siap’ mean?

I’m often asked, “Do you speak Indonesian?”and I answer, “Yup, both Indonesian and Balinese.” More often than not, the reaction is: “Ooooh, they’re two different languages?” They are indeed. And the word ‘siap’ is an example of just how different the languages can be.

In Indonesian siap literally means ‘ready’, but it can also be a way of expressing agreement, just like saying “OK”, “I’m on to it” or something along those lines. I’ve noticed that siap has gained popularity in colloquial speech over the past few years and it has become a stock phrase, so much so that it has its meme variations like “Shiiiii-appp” heard on Indonesian comedy shows (and must be pronounced with the correct intonation and slightly effeminate gait to pull it off effectively). There are also spelling variants in messaging such as ‘siyap’ or ‘syap’ as well as siap komandan meaning ‘Yes leader / commando’ and siap bos meaning ‘Yes bos’. Indonesians love playing on the whole “big boss and lil guy” dichotomy, so this phrase is meant both literally and sarcastically (although sarcasm – it has to be said – is not an Indonesian forte and is often misunderstood). If you use repeat siap in short fire succession, siap-siap means to get ready. You can use it in the imperative too: “Siap-siap ya” to mean “Get ready.”

Siap in Balinese has an entirely different meaning altogether: it means ‘chicken’! You couldn’t get much different, right? To those in the know, you can slip this word into a joke by saying: “Sudah siap, belum bebek” (I’m already ready / a chicken but not yet a duck) or asking someone, “Sudah ayam Bali?” to mean “Are you ready?” Indonesians love plays on words – once you’ve mastered Indonesian, and particularly Balinese, you can slip these word plays into conversation: they’ll love you for it and Balinese people will be impressed that you understand the differences in meaning of the same word in two completely different languages that most people on this island speak with ease every day. The Wrap of 2019 The rush to be a part of the Bali food scene continues. As with almost anywhere else in the world those who know what they are doing succeed, and most of the others fail. 2018 has seen so many new operations open and many close, some even opening and closing in the same year. The following are some of the new places of 2019 that we have looked at, plus a few not so new that we discovered for the first time. Every year sees a new fashion that all seem to crave. Once it was to be called Mediterranean [often with no more than a pasta dish and a Greek salad], then it was Tapas [without any necessary Spanish connection]. Then it was the dry-aged beef and last year the Burger craze [irrespective of cuisine] catching up with the rest of the world. Now you find Burgers on almost every Bali menu from local cafes to 5 star restaurants. 2018 was the year of Peruvian dishes and in 2019 the edible flowers have became fashionable with the success of René Redzepi’s incredible cuisine experiments at Copenhagen’s Noma [4 times voted the ‘Best Restaurant in the World’]. Rather ironic as flowers have been a part of Asian cuisines for centuries, The wonderful Thai Banana Flower Salad leading the way. Even in Bali stuffed zucchini blossoms had already been on menus for many years. Now a myriad of colours adorn many different dishes, across the island. During 2019 many restaurateurs, both professional and amateur, attempted to open pure Vegan restaurants, most failed. Why do they keep doing it? Most action this year was in Ubud and Canggu [where new places opened and closed, almost daily]. The biggest surprise was the emergence of a couple of excellent restaurants in Bali’s north, Lovina. Leading the way was Geert de Myer’s intimate, classy 10th Table. To find this level of attention to detail in the previously very basic north of Bali was both surprising and most welcome. Geert’s experience as Hotel Manager on one of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships came to the fore. Fine dining French, with some subtle Asian touches!

Twist is not much more than a ‘hole in the wall’, so small it is easy to miss. It nestles in the corner of a busy little stretch of budget restaurants on Raya Pengosekan, Ubud [next door to the original location of Taco Casa, to which they have now returned with majestically renovated premises]. The Caramelized Pork is exceptional [a touch of Vietnam?], as are the curries which are Thai style]. The Birds & The Bees is yet another zany name for a Bali restaurant. This one is on Jln. Monkey Forest on Ubud at what was once Lotus Lane [one of the last of the Lotus restaurants in Bali, the original Café Lotus in Ubud having reverted back to the property owner years ago]. An attractive fit out presents it as a happy place, the menu caters for the gluten free crowd with even g/f pizzas. Lettuce Cups and gin-infused cocktails are the specialty of the house Bonito is found on Ubud’s ‘Cheap Eat Street’, Jln. Goutomo [no parking, pedestrians only, runs between Dewa Sita and Raya Ubud] where many places offer mains at Rp. 50,000, or less. Bonito is marginally more expensive but that does not seem to deter the customers. A healthy salad; Spinach, avocado and mango with pickled fennel, rocket, caramelised cashew nuts and a ginger sesame lime vinaigrette On the corner of Goutomo and Raya Ubud is Union Café, part of the Habitat team and offering a similar fare. Olive is located in the village of Petulu, north of Andong, Ubud [Jl. Tirta Tawar]. A small place with its home made dips [hummus, baba ganoush], salads [tabbouleh, fattoush] and snacks [falafel sandwich]. OIA is a new Greek and Mediterranean restaurant on Raya Ubud [next door to the Museum Puri Lukisan]. Mezze Platter, Gyros, Souvlaki, and a bit of fusion with Lamb Lasagne. Velvet is hidden away on Jl. Lungsiakan, in Kedewatan, northwest of Ubud. With so many Tex and Cal Mex restaurants all over Bali it is indeed unusual to find a Mexican in the kitchen as is the case here. Whilst referring to itself as a Seafood Grill restaurant, the food is regional Mexican. Another surprise in the Ubud area was Usha Café, yet again taking a previously failed position on the hill between Pengosekan and Lod Tunduh, it brings Ukranian cuisine to Ubud with those wonderful dumplings, pirogies and chebureki. Even a hearty Borscht for the cold morning!

Best New Fine Dining - 10th Table - French - Lovina

Following behind, in the north, is what has almost become an annual event in Bali, a new restaurant from that man, Marinos. This time it is called Riverside [but don’t look for a river], and conforms to his proven recipe for success, comfort food at budget prices with friendly smiling service. Almost 20 years ago he opened a small nondescript ‘Greek warung’, called Mykonos Taverna on a lonely road in Kerobokan [the road to Oberoi] surrounded by rice paddies, Within months with constant packed houses, everyone else rushed to also open a restaurant on what I then called, Eat Street. Whilst the east coast of Bali remained fairly static, Ubud, as usual, opened its doors to many newcomers and said goodbye to a few. It is becoming very difficult to fill up restaurants in Ubud these days with such an enormous choice of venues, so sadly many are running at a loss or close to it. Hence it is truly amazing, and very pleasing, that last year’s discovery of all time, Aperitif @ The Viceroy has kicked on, continuing to offer the finest dining in Bali, and often to a packed house. The new flavour in Ubud seemed to be Italian. Both Famous and L’Osteria took over sites that had previously failed but hit the right notes from day one. Famous, in Pengosekan, has a delightful rear garden area that has proved to be very popular and L’Oosteria has survived the tragic loss of their Italian chef in a late night motor bike accident. Other new places such as Bittersweet [Monkey Forest Road] include Italian items on their more International menu [Pumpkin Ravioli in a classic sage butter and a Portobello Mushroom Fettuccine]. Seasoned [Pengosekan] concentrates on rice dishes; Indian, Chinese, Thai and Spanish, as well as Indonesian.

Semifredo @ Massimo - Sanur

In the south a spattering of new openings in Tuban. Johnny Tacos is a simple name and simple tacos [mostly of the fresh variety, rather than deep fried] is what you get. A small space close to the Green Garden Hotel, Jln. Kartika Plaza, it is easy to miss even though it has a very colorful décor. Always busy which tells its own story! A few other Mex dishes but it is the tacos that they all come for. Sukun is the restaurant at the Amnaya Resort just off Jl. Kartika Plaza, Tuban [Gang Puspa Ayu]. Indonesian is the main cuisine although being in a resort there is also a very International menu. Set in tropical gardens the setting was fittingly designed by the late Made Wijaya, who was once a young Australian tourist who made Bali his home and left many landscaping monuments, such as this, behind. Eggs dishes are to the fore with an excellent Benedict leading the way. An unusual but interesting breakfast offering was to combine eggs with soft shell crab. Henry’s is a Bar & Grill on Jln. Kartika Plaza, next to Lippo Mall. It is all about dry aged beef that has been grilled, smoked or cured. Jollie Kitchen is a Middle Eastern restaurant on Jl. Kartika Plaza in front of and a part of the Paradiso Hotel. Bathinjan bil Humus [mixed vegetables with curry sauce, topped with feta], many Kofta [minced meat] bil Sanayah with potato curry, Labanieh with bread and garlic sauce, or Mixed Kebabs [both kofta and sheesh kebabs]. New in Kuta, the Boss Man sells burgers, from their two locations; Poppies II and Raya Cendana.The Original has 160g beef patty, American cheddar, iceberg lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, grilled onions, pickles, American mustard, thousand island, horse radish aioli. Nebula is a trendy café in the old tourist area of Poppies Lane II, Kuta. Different from the rest it serves great coffee and a range of breakfasts, brunch, snacks and light meals. The cuisine is mostly Asian but also with many western dishes with Asian touches. Healthy breakfasts, wraps, burgers, etc. The Quinoa Salad is very healthy. Along to Legian and Maybe Tony almost gets it right. Breakfast [brunch] is served till 5.00 p.m., almost all day. This is an almost new café/restaurant on Jln. Legian, Kuta [opposite Sky Garden]. It is small, intimate and very friendly. Their Italian chef turns quality product out of the kitchen, not just the Italian basics, even the burgers are good. A bit better than what you expect to find in this area.

Best Cheap Eats - Usha Cafe - Russian - Ubud

Mimpi Manis, Jl. Tandakan, Sanur, is just in front of, and operated by the same owner/chef, as Kayu Manis. Not to be confused with the hotel of the same name, as there is no connection. Mimpi Manis has the same attention to detail in the kitchen as big brother but serving local cuisine instead of the international offerings that have long made Kayu Manis one of Sanur’s best restaurants. Sanur saw a stop to their recent spate of openings with local adjustments only. Ryoshi, one of the Sanur originals, moved to new premises at the southern end and offering the first Chirashi Sushi Bar in Bali. Chirashi Sushi is the way that sushi is often served in the home in Japan. A bowl is layered with sushi rice and topped with a selection of sliced vegetables. The evergreen Massimo is far from a new restaurant but keeps up to date with constant new offerings. Highlights this year were the use of a rotary oven to fire their pizzas [better heat distribution] and a sensational range of Semifredo, an amazing Italian dessert which must be made at a temperature of minus 20 to set, but then is maintained at minus 5 degrees thereafter, half cold [semi-fredo]. It has a base of sponge cake and rum to which a vast variety of different ingredients are added, The range at Massimo includes Trinakria [pictured] with pomegranate, lemon sorbet and strawberry, quite

sensational!

Happy Chappy Express has opened its 1st outlet in Legian. Whilst it is located on Jln. Padma Utara it is a little difficult to find as it is just off the street in the centre of a line of small shops at the entrance-way to the Garden View Hotel. On offer is a full range of dim sum as well as a selection of the most popular dishes from the main menu at their so popular main restaurant in Jln. Braban; Kung Pao Chicken, Szechuan Beef, Sweet & Sour Pork, Firecracker Chicken, Salt & Pepper Squid, etc. Canggu as in recent years, saw the most openings [and closings], everyone seems to want to open a restaurant here. Indigo on Jln. Pantai Berawa, Canggu, is quality Japanese. They offer classic dishes as well as their innovative ‘new style’ sashimi and the unusual Yakimono dishes cooked over the charcoal grill. For something very different try the Gyoza stuffed with foie gras. Ithaka began in Canggu [Jln. Pantai Batu Bolong] and then also opened in Ubud [Jln. Tirta Tawar]. They offer what is always popular, simple tasty food that is cheap! It was not the first, nor will it be the last, place opened by surfers who came to Bali, fell in love with the island and stayed.. Nude Café is on Jln. Pantai Berawa, In this case ‘nude’ is supposed to mean food for a healthy body rather than being served by naked staff. It is open from early morning so breakfast is the go and you can be as healthy or

13 not, as you like? The Berry Chia Parfait, berry compote on a chia yogurt with homemade granola, coconut and maple syrup, ticks all the boxes as does the Mango & Kiwi Bowl with its mango, kiwi and pineapple salsa with coconut and orange. Koloni is a café on Jln. Raya Semat, Canggu. Breakfast is only available in the mornings, something that I always find very strange as in a tourist environment they should always be available all day. However what they do offer is very good. Smoothie Fruit Bowls with dragon fruit, chia seeds, and a variety of fresh fruit. The house special is their Carrot Cake Waffle served with cream cheese and sliced almonds. BB52 is the burger house they are all talking about, Jl. Tanah Barak, Canggu. Even the all Vegan Mushroom Burger gets rave reviews. The Fries come with a truffled mayonnaise and Parmesan flakes. Rise and Shine Café is on Jl. Padang Linjong, Canggu. As the name suggests it specializes in breakfasts. Souphoria on Jl. Bumbak, in Canggu, is most unusual in that their menu is all pork! They serve their pork ribs in a soup. Pork Sate may not be that unusual but these are very large ones. Loco Moco is a Hawaiian special of rice, meat and a fried egg on top. At Souphoria that meat is of course. pork. The Breakfast Burrito is the star of the show but there are many other options. Da Romeo is on Jl. Pantai Berawa, Canggu. It is very Italian and very popular. Carpaccio can be traditional beef or tuna but the starter that most regular diners order is their Burrata con Pomodorini, an amazing Italian cheese, mozzarella on the outside and cream inside, simply served with just tomatoes and basil, drizzled with olive oil. The marinated sardines are another favourite. Many different pastas but Pici is their specialty, an unusual pasta from Tuscany. Starter Lab is a bakery, found on Jln. Padang Linjong in Canggu. It has become a go to place for all the lovers of sourdough bread. Perhaps the first Bali operation to make it big in Singapore, now that really is a feat. Well, there’s a new kid on the block definitely worth checking out if you’re a big fan of sourdough. Co-founder Emerson Manibo trained at the famous Per Se restaurant in New York, and Tartine Bakery before venturing into his own bakery business, Starter Lab, back in 2017. Their outlet at Havelock Road, Singapore is their second one!

Heʻe poke is usually called by its Japanese name Tako Poke, except in places like the island of Niʻihau where the Hawaiian language is spoken. So Moana offers poke, the Maui specialty, as well a range of other seafood dishes. Duck, Duck, Goose is a Canadian chef’s interpretation of Asian street food. It is found on Jln Mertanadi, Kerobokan. The menu has dishes from just about everywhere in Asia. They do not claim that all are perfectly traditional as many are re-invented from their own travel memories. Fresh, clean and relaxed, an interesting stop for a tasty snack or meal. Flat Stanley, Jln. Taman Ganesha, Petitenget brings Californian style pizzas to Bali. Start with Salumi and Charcuterie, a selection of meats and pickles or a Cheese Board of 4 cheeses, tomato jam and olives, Small plates include Salt-roasted Beets with whipped feta, sorrel and heirloom radish, Grilled Asparagus with shaved parmesan, Charred Broccoli with peanuts and chilli pesto, Grilled Octopus and Meatballs. Mauri is Italian on Jl. Petitenget. A small intimate restaurant it also offers a chef’s table setting for 5 persons. Upstairs is just for small snacks. Chef Mauricio was originally at the Bulgari and later at Ubud’s Ritz Carlton before branching out on his own, serving traditional dishes from the south. Their Beef Cheek Tortelli is a great example of tradition with a twist. Tempted is on Jl. Lebak Sari, Petitenget. They tempt you with a range of Italian classics. Such as Polpette al sugo, a famous family dish from Sicily, large meat balls stuffed with a nut of mozzarella in a thick tomato broth. Fritto Misto alla Romana is a plate of deep-fried prawns and squid with pumpkin, sage and onions and a lemon mayonnaise. Rev Bistro is French. Located on Jln. Yudistira, Seminyak it offers classic French plus a few international dishes. Fish Mosseline with Quenelles Lyonnaise, Foie Gras, Mustard Rabbit, Frogs’ Legs and for your steak a decadent Tournedos Rossini [topped with foie gras, drizzled with Madeira sauce]. Hibiscus is a surprise! It is found on Jl. Drupadi, and presents classic Indonesian but in a creative style, with a selection of international favourites. Even their Spring Rolls are different, minced chicken with pineapple and fresh mint in a crisp casing, so good. Many chicken mains including Lombok’s Taliwang, Bali’s Betutu and Rica-Rica, the fiery chicken from Manado in North Sulawesi. Liebeling is almost rural with its rice paddy views on Jln. Kunti II, Seminyak. They serve both local Indonesian fare and a selection of western dishes. A relaxing spot so close to the action but also far removed from it. The menu has a German influence, as the name suggests; Schnitzels, Currywurst, etc. The Chicken Wings are very popular with their super sticky BBQ sauce [made

with honey and palm sugar]. As are the Honey Burgers.

Moana Fish Eatery made its name in Canggu and has now also opened an outlet on Jl. Raya Taman, Seminyak. Self-styled as Polynesian it offers Hawaiian dishes such as the strangely named Poke Bowls. According to Wikapedia, Poke is diced raw fish served either as an appetizer or as a main course and is one of

Best New Value Restaurant - Akua - Spanish - Jimbaran

Koral is an amazing underwater seafood restaurant. It is found at one of this year’s new 5 star luxury resorts, the Apurva Kempinsky, west of Nusa Dua. You can watch fish swim by through the adjoining large glass windows as you feast on their siblings. The windows take up entire walls so you do really feel as if you are underwater, effectively you are dining in an aquarium. Feature dishes include the Lump Blue Crab Salad with Granny Smith apples, crisp jicama, and aromatic lemon, basil, and ginger; and the interesting Prawn & Lime, which combines stuffed jumbo prawns with dabu-dabu salsa, potato gnocci and tomato and chili sauce. Bali still presents the best ‘value for money’ dining in Asia, and the widest variety of different cuisines. Aren’t we lucky?

Best New Pub Food - Avenue A - American - Canggu

Occasionally you walk into a new restaurant for the first time and immediately feel at home. Such was the case at Avenue A, an American Gastropub set up by Billy Joe [a.k.a. Bill Collyer], with a homely ambiance, New York Pizzas [fermented dough base], wonderful smoked meats from America’s south and a few of Italian grandmother’s old favourite dishes, you just know that you are going to return again, and again.

In Jimbaran, not much change but still a few pleasant surprises. None more so that Akua, a great simple Spanish restaurant highlighting the cuisine of the Basques. Standard Spanish plus many regional specials. There is also a Spanish Tortilla, so different from the Mexican version, this one being more like an open omelette of potato and egg or the ultimate Spanish cold plate [jamon], and a jug of Sangria, of course! He’enalu Café is in Pecatu. It is a modern international café with a Hawaiian touch. Open for breakfast, their main offering is the egg special with just about everything, even real bacon. Alternatives are the Breakfast Burritos and Quesadillas, Avocado Toast and a Vegan Falafel Platter. Their signature dishes include Poke Bowls, Loco Moco, Hawaiian Fried Rice and Falafel Tacos. Beauty & Health Virtures Of Vegan I’ve always been put off by anything that I regard as being fanatic. This included being vegan. I couldn’t comprehend why my vegan friend couldn’t have a slice of birthday cake and ice cream or some pizza, even if it was vegetarian. I’ve basically been vegetarian for quite a while with occasional indulgences of fish in my diet. That is until I watched a movie on Netflix called The Game Changers. I had no idea what the movie was about before I turned it on. But by the end of the film I was almost ready to turn vegan. In fact I stopped buying eggs and milk and stopped eating fish after watching the film.

This can contribute to a higher daily intake of certain beneficial nutrients. Several studies have reported that vegan diets tend to provide more fiber, antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds, being richer in potassium, magnesium, folate and vitamins A, C and E. For instance, poorly planned vegan diets may provide insufficient amounts of essential fatty acids, vitamin B12, iron, calcium, iodine or zinc. I was astounded at the results that athletes were achieving simply by eliminating animal products from their diets. Many could run faster, lift more weights, and be a better fighter and football player. I was surprised to see that Arnold Schwarzenegger has become vegan and was a producer of the film. Patrik Baboumian was voted the strongest man in 2015. When Patrik was asked how he could be as strong as an ox not eating meat, he replied “Have you ever seen an ox eat meat?” Actually the strongest animals like gorillas, oxen, elephants. horses and rhinos are all plant eaters. The animals that are consumed by humans such as cows, pigs, sheep and chickens are just the “middle-man” in the food chain. They all get their energy from plants. However the amount of water and land to grow crops to feed these animals hardly compensates for the amount of energy that is produced to feed humans. 1 kilo of beef requires 6810 liters of water, which includes irrigation of the grains and grasses in feed, plus water for drinking and processing. 1 slice of bread requires 42 liters of water.

4. May protect against certain cancers According to the World Health Organization, about one-third of all cancers can be prevented by factors within your control, including diet. Vegans generally eat considerably more legumes, fruit and vegetables than non-vegans. This may explain why a recent review of 96 studies found that vegans may benefit from a 15% lower risk of developing or dying from cancer. Also, vegan diets generally contain more soy products, which may offer some protection against breast cancer. 5. Lower risk of heart disease Eating fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes and fiber is linked to a lower risk of heart disease. All of these are generally eaten in large amounts in well-planned vegan diets.

I found it interesting to watch three football players being given an animal based meal and the next day only plant based. The difference in the plasma of their blood was astounding. The plant based blood tests revealed clear plasma and the meat based was cloudy. It was amusing to see the results of 3 football players and the size and number of erections during their sleep being a big difference after

Dairy products contain growth hormones and are also treated with artificial hormones, which can affect the human body’s hormone system. Many celebrities credit veganism for their youthful looks. American singer-songwriter Mýa says that her vegan lifestyle is to thank for her “fountain of youth.” Fifty-eight-year-old actor Woody Harrelson said his plant-based diet is “crucial” for his youthful appearance, and 77-year-old rock ‘n’ roll legend Paul McCartney not only looks younger than he is but completes his solo world tours - playing more than 30 songs per show over the span of two and a half hours - on a vegan diet. McCartney famously said, “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian.” In a short film called “One Day a Week,” which encourages people to eat less meat, McCartney said, “If we all join together in this effort, we can help improve the environment, reduce the negative impacts of climate change, and even improve people’s health.” Now that you’re aware of your personal health benefits of being vegan also think about the benefits for the planet. Fewer greenhouse gas emissions from animal food production. Smaller water footprint with 92 percent of the planet’s water footprint is linked to agriculture, with livestock making up one-third of the figure. Less deforestation showing that beef production requires 36 times more land than plantbased protein like peas. Save the oceans and fish as factory farm runoff and livestock grazing is also a major contributor to river and lake pollution. BOOMER CORNER Heart Health In Bali As the candles on our birthday cakes multiply to alarming numbers, we wonder from time to time how our hearts are doing. We can’t see what’s going on in there and it’s a bit of a worry. Cardiologist Dr Putra Antara of Ubud Care Clinic recently gave an excellent presentation on heart disease, followed by an intense hour of Q&A. Here are the highlights. By the age of 70, our heart will have logged about 2 billion beats. That’s a lot of wear and tear. Just think about how often we have to replace our pond pumps. But records between 1900 and 2010 show that coronary artery disease (CAD) in the west peaked in the 1960s and 1970s then decreased because of improved medical care and education. People from high income countries are more likely to die of cancer these days, and those from middle and low income countries of CAD. In Indonesia, about half of the cost of the national health care plan BPJS is paid out for heart issues. Risk factors include high cholesterol/blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family history and obesity. In Indonesia smoking is the highest risk factor; Dr Putra recently treated a 22 year old heavy smoker for a heart attack. Prevention of CAD should start in our thirties. We all know the rules of a healthy heart: stay active, have a good diet, lose weight, control cholesterol and blood pressure, reduce blood sugar and stop smoking. But no matter how virtuous our lifestyle, the build-up of plaque in the coronary arteries is inevitable; almost everyone will experience it over time. Plaque eventually narrows the arteries, limiting blood flow. The progression, over many years, is the gradual narrowing of the coronary arteries due to plaque. This can lead to angina, the pain caused by narrowed arteries which is usually triggered by stress or exertion. Typically angina pain occurs in a larger area of the chest and is relieved with nitroglycerin or rest. (By the way, gentlemen, don’t take nitroglycerin with Viagra; they both open the blood vessels and may cause a blackout due to a dangerous drop in blood pressure.)

I’ve always had high cholesterol, and a few years ago during a check up in Bangkok asked to have a CT coronary angiogram which was the only test I was aware of to visualize coronary plaque. Dr Putra explained that there were risks associated with this test, and it was also expensive. In Bali we can get a Coronary Calcium Scoring CT Scan at Siloam, Kasih Ibu and other hospitals which costs only Rp 700,000 to Rp 1,500,000. Even if we have no symptoms, it might be a good idea to see what’s going on in there and give us a baseline. By the way, although I’ve always had high cholesterol including the ‘bad’ or LDL cholesterol, I had no evidence of significant arterial plaque. That’s the tradeoff to the lifestyle we’ve chosen. So we need to take more responsibility. If you think you may be having a heart attack and are not already on blood thinners, Dr Putra suggests immediately chewing 160-320 mg of aspirin/aspilet (in a pinch, it’s fine to take a full tablet of 500 mg) and 180 mg ticagrelol or 300 mg clopidogrel with a full glass of water. I had to order both of these through the clinic as they don’t seem to be available in pharmacies in Ubud. Have someone drive you to Siloam, Kasih Ibu or Sanglah. Sanglah has a special cardiac unit called ‘Ruang Emergency PJT’ (be sure to use this one and not the ordinary emergency entrance) and, because it’s a teaching hospital, always has a cardiology resident on duty. The next best option would be the Siloam Hospital Emergency as they have the most cardiologists of the private hospitals. Bear in mind that Sanglah can be slow and bureaucratic. Ubud Care Clinic in Teges has an emergency ward where heart attacks can be stabilized before the journey to hospital in their ambulance. According to Dr Putra, forced coughing is used only for certain heart rhythm problems, but definitely not for heart attacks (chest pain). It could even make things worse and trigger a blackout. This hasn’t been a very cheerful read, but forewarned is forearmed. I don’t know about you, but I’ll be preparing a small container with aspirin and ticagrelol to carry at all times. I personally believe than being happy and positive is a big part of mental and physical health, so take a big dose of that too. All bright blessings for 2020. “A heart attack occurs when a coronary artery gets completely blocked; stress or physical exertion may trigger a rupture of the plaque that leads to a sudden blockage,” explains Dr Putra. “An electrocardiogram during an attack is the basic diagnostic tool. Treatment includes immediate oxygen and blood thinners, and nitroglycerin to reduce any artery spasm. One or more stents may be inserted to keep the blocked artery open. In cases of severe blockage, a coronary bypass (open heart surgery) literally bypasses the blockage with a grafted vein or redirected artery. Meanwhile, in those with only narrowing of the arteries, stents generally won’t prolong life, but may improve quality of life by reducing angina.” It shouldn’t surprise us that all the old heart attack trials were done on Caucasian males. Only recently has it been recognized that women, Asians and Africans may have different symptoms from the ‘norm’ of chest pain radiating to the left arm. Living in Bali, it’s important to be educated and informed. We can’t just call 911 to summon a fully equipped ambulance with highly trained paramedics to our door in a few minutes. A classic heart attack is harder to diagnose in women, especially if they are over 65 and/or diabetic. Heart attack symptoms in women can be any combination of the following, bearing in mind that symptoms may be more vague and atypical: - - - - - - - - - -

Chest pain (the pain may be dull, hard to pinpoint the exact location, it may be in the back or may radiate to the left/centre of chest) that generally goes on for more than a few minutes Nausea, vomiting Anxiety Stomach pain Pain in arm/leg/jaw Shortness of breath Sudden cold sweat Feeling light headed or dizzy Sudden exhaustion Palpitations

In the United States, women coming to an Emergency Room with heart attack symptoms are much more likely to be dismissed than men. Dr Putra suggests that anyone experiencing a possible heart attack should immediately tell the doctor they have never felt anything like this before, which should be a red flag. Heart attacks are somewhat more common in the small hours of the night. For this reason, Dr Putra suggests that blood pressure and blood thinning medications should be taken at night, while beta blockers be taken in the morning.What about the demon cholesterol? High cholesterol alone does not necessarily turn into plaque, in fact about half of all heart attack victims don’t have high cholesterol. Around 20-30% of our total cholesterol level is determined by diet, the balance is genetic. Science now sees the obesity epidemic, fueled by sugar, salt, and refined flour, as a more serious threat to heart health than ‘fat’ C/He/G-15 Jan. 20

Indonesian Children’s Favorite Stories by Joan Suyenaga and Salim Martowiredjo Indonesian Children’s Favorite Stories is a charmingly illustrated multicultural children’s book which presents Indonesian fairy tales that provide insights into the country’s rich oral culture. Indonesian folktales are no different from those of the Western world - the triumph of the virtuous over evil, the awarding of a just prize for good deeds, etc. - except that exotic Malay cultural and physical environments serve as the backdrop for the stories. Set in tropical rainforests, on balmy beaches and in the remote highlands of the earth’s largest island chain, these stories represent only a few of the rich store of Indonesian legends that give glimpses of Indonesia’s ethnic groups, rural life and its unique plants and animals ranging from Sumatra to Sulawesi and Maluku (but mostly Java). Though the stories are aimed at children ages 5-12, readers young and old will find little to offend here and much to enjoy. Indonesian folktales generally incorporate one or more main themes: obedience, envy, men’s wrath, women’s loyalty, sibling rivalry, trickery and childishness. The characters are often poor but resourceful farmers, woodsmen, carpenters, fishermen and other commoners who confront demons, royalty and evildoers. Magic spells are cast and the help of a spirit is enlisted to win fortunes or the hand of a maiden. They are stories of lowly people and humble creatures in trouble. A large and scary forest is always not too far away. Teasers but not spoilers: “True Strength” tells the story of a wise, humble and clever man who thwarted three thieves when they realized that they were in the presence of someone with supernatural power far greater than theirs. “The Buffalo’s Victory” is set in West Sumatra’s land of the Minangkabau, a people who live in peace until the King of Java deems them subservient to him. When the Minang kingdom is threatened by the much more powerful Majapahit kingdom of East Java, they propose a contest to decide their fate by pitting a baby water buffalo against their opponent’s huge champion bull. This story reflects the inter-regional/ inter-ethnic rivalry that exists all over Indonesia to this day.

In “The Woodcarver’s True Love,” a princess from the island of Simbau in the Sulawesi Sea chooses to marry a worthy commoner over many rich suitors who had gathered before the king. This is a tale about a pure heart and the real meaning of love. “The Magic Headcloth” relates how one wise ruler protected Java by fighting the Giant King Dewata Cengkar. The hero, Aji Saka, is given the honor of bestowing a great gift on the people - the knowledge of letters. Widely and perennially popular are the traditional kancil (mousedeer) fables that applaud the heroics of a small, weak yet cunning figure who uses his intelligence to triumph over animals much larger and more powerful than himself. In “Kancil Steals Cucumbers,” the mousedeer tricks a farmer’s dog into letting him free after being caught eating cucumbers. According to historians, the kancil symbolizes the ideal Javanese man who solves problems in a calm, level-headed way to avoid open conflict. Mousedeer stories have been turned into books, numberless cartoons and wayang (puppet) performances. The oldest written version is a song-poem written in 1822. A frog wins the heart of a princess and accomplishes miraculous acts in “The Frog and the Magic Axe.” In spite of his ugly appearance and because of her undying faith in him, the frog turns into a handsome man who she marries. In the funny “Caterpillar Story,” you don’t know where the tale is going as a series of unexpected events culminates with a poor village boy marrying the village chief’s daughter. In “The Story of Timun Mas” (“Golden Cucumber”), a brave girl, the

daughter of a poor farmer, escapes from the clutches of the evil green giant Buto Ijo by using magic tricks. There are notable differences between this new 2019 edition and the previous 2005 edition. Though this new edition has the same foreword, stories, illustrations, number of pages, it’s printed in a larger format on glossier paper which makes the book easier to read and brings to best advantage the attractive illustrations. Other multicultural children’s books in the Tuttle series that have been retold for international audiences include fairytales from India, Singapore, the Philippines, China and Tibet, Korea, Bali and Vietnam. Indonesian Children’s Favorite Stories highlights folktales and legends that are some of the most popular and beloved in Indonesia. With the usual pantheon of astute princesses and virtuous peasants, each gives insights into the country’s environment, traditional culture and morals. Even in the age of YouTube, they offer a taste of how universal values of bravery, cleverness, true love, kindness and loyalty have been transmitted to Indonesian children for hundreds of years. Now with this larger format edition, grownups are able share the stories with young readers of all backgrounds in the West. Candra Metu – Special Appreciation Night – 25 January Ni Ketut Arini is one of Bali’s living dance legends. For over 60 years she has graced stages all over the world with her movements, perfecting the Balinese art form and mesmerising all that witness her. Candra Metu means ‘when the moon rises’, a Balinese dance that is slowly fading away. It is Ni Ketut Arini, through the Warini Dance Foundation, that keeps the dance alive. At age 76 she continues to dance herself, but most importantly she teaches the younger generations, understanding the role of dance in Balinese culture. Local News Heavy rain and high tides expected to hit Bali today and tomorrow Heavy rain is expected across Bali this week, along with high tides of up to 2 meters on the island shores, according to an early warning issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). “Heavy rain with lightning or thunder and heavy wind is to be expected in western and northern Bali,” BMKG said in a statement. The agency added high tides, predicted to reach as high as 2 meters on shores around the island, are also expected. Meanwhile, the Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Bali said a total of 66 personnel are on standby across the island, should any situation requiring emergency response arise during this rainy season. In addition, Basarnas Bali have prepared rescue equipment such as rubber boats and life jackets. “Our readiness determines our responses whenever we receive a report, every day there’s a team on standby for 24 hours and seven days, and a team is dedicated to a special SAR response team,” Hari Adi Purnomo, who heads Basarnas Bali, said in a statement. MONEY MATTERS Could The US / Iran Conflict Impact Expats in Bali? The short answer is yes, but to what extent depends on your nationality, your job or business, and to what extent you travel. It can also affect your savings and investments.

hostilities following a couple of inevitable skirmishes. Worst case scenario would be a full-scale war spreading to other countries in the Middle East. The probability will be something in between.

Conflicts have been ongoing in the Middle East for thousands of years so why should the latest crisis be any different? The reason is the ferocious call for revenge by seemingly the entire population of Iran against an American government whose president ordered the assassination of a highly respected general. Respected that is, by Iranians, but not the West.

If shipping is disrupted for more than a few days the price of oil could go through the roof. This will hurt Indonesia badly because it now depends heavily on imported oil. Chances are that the government will continue to shy away from increasing the price of petrol and instead will have to increase the current subsidy to the detriment of other sectors such as infrastructure. The Rupiah could also suffer as a result.

How did it start and where is it going?

An all-out war would seriously impact the tourist industry as people do not like to travel far during times of conflict. Europeans in particular will be reluctant to transit or fly over the Middle East or pay higher fares to airlines that by-pass the region. Those working in the tourist industry would do well to have a few contingency plans in place.

A few days ago the US launched a drone attack in neighbouring Iraq that killed Iran’s second most powerful figure, Qasem Soleimani. Its justification was that Soleimani was planning imminent attacks on US personnel in the region, although to date it has not produced any evidence to that effect. There seems to be a general consensus in the West that Soleimani was an evil figure but there has been little support for the manner in which he was assassinated without wider consultation within the US government or with allies for whom Trump widely shows contempt. The action brought together a previously divided Iran as in one voice the people have been demanding revenge and it has been duly promised by its leaders. In turn, should there be any retaliation, President Trump has threatened to unleash attacks on 52 targets, including cultural ones, which has further enflamed Iranian anger. Some form of retaliation on the part of Iran seems inevitable, given the anger and determination shown by its people. Depending on the scale of the retaliation it seems equally inevitable that the US will respond even more aggressively. This could happen before this issue of the Bali Advertiser is published or more likely in the following days or even weeks. What was the immediate impact? The price of oil immediately shot up as did the price of gold which reached a 7-year high on 6th January. Stock markets fell, but not significantly. US citizens have been warned to leave Iraq and be extra vigilant elsewhere. A word of caution to other western nationals: In 1972 a former boss of mine in the oil industry, Sam Burbidge, moved to Lebanon. A few weeks later I heard on the radio that he had been shot dead in his car. Apparently he had been taken for an American; they were targets even then. In fact he was British. If the US chooses to attack Iran it can do so with ease from its bases and ships in the vicinity. Iran has limited capacity or the means to attack the US directly so it has to seek US targets in other parts of the world, including ‘soft’ targets such as oil tankers. What about longer term risks? Much depends on the scale of retaliation and counterretaliation. Best case scenario would be a de-escalation of

How might currencies and gold be affected? Where currencies are concerned the ‘safe havens’ tend to be the USD, Yen and Swiss Franc. Emerging market currencies will be out of favour. Cash in the bank is not always the safest investment in the event of extreme financial disruption. Holding real assets, such as property or shares, can be safer in such circumstances if rampant inflation results from conflict. People also flock to gold in times of conflict and war, hence the current 7-year high. It is wise to hold some gold as an ‘insurance’ against disruption or collapse of the financial system or currencies. Buying gold, however, is also speculative since it does not pay interest and can take a long time to recover from a big fall. If you see its price rising exponentially

it is almost certainly too late to buy. That’s when panic buyers move in. Buying physical gold directly has its own risks. The simplest way to buy is via a mutual fund but you can expect charges that reflect the cost of storage and security. You can also buy gold indirectly via gold mining funds. What about stock market investments? These are likely to go through a period of volatility but they can also recover quickly so the conventional wisdom for long-term investors is to ‘stay the course’. There could be room however for some short-term adjustments to reduce volatility. If you have or plan to start a portfolio of investments these are some of the funds or asset classes that can be considered ‘defensive’ or more robust during troubled times: • Money funds - safer than cash as they hold a range of deposits across a large number of banks. Not only can they negotiate higher rates of interest but they are better protected should any single bank fail. • Government bonds - the safest of all investments in theory as a government can always print money to honour the capital and interest payments although in that event purchasing power would be another matter! US Treasuries currently pay between 1.5% and just over 2% per annum depending on duration. • Corporate bonds - safer than shares since in the case of insolvency, bond holders get paid before shareholders. • Equity income funds - these comprise shares that pay good dividends, a useful source of income should share prices fall. • Infrastructure funds - projects tend to continue even during times of recession or stress. • Actively managed mixed asset balanced funds - let the professional managers make the calls when deciding asset allocations and changes. The above should in fact be part of any large diverse portfolio. But the proportions can be adjusted to circumstances and this could be one of those times when such adjustments should be made, particularly following 2019 which proved a very good year for most major markets. Conclusion Bali is a universe away from the turbulence of the Middle East. Most Balinese outside the tourist industry are unlikely to be affected but expats will relate more closely to unfolding events and some will be affected more than others. Americans in particular will feel impacted by the folly or wisdom of their leaders depending on how they view the actions that led to the present scenario. Time will tell whether it was good or bad judgement. But for most it is important to stay safe and take whatever actions may be appropriate to weather any potential economic fallout.
