WHO WE ARE
Adopt a family is a Bali-based community initiative helping families in need, who are unable to make a living during the COVID – 19 pandemic. Life in Bali changed dramatically since the outbreak of the virus. Especially, the impact of no tourism has led to a significant rise in unemployment amongst local people who have no access to welfare. This has already resulted in widespread poverty across the island. Instead of being able to stay safe at home, they are forced onto the streets and into unsafe situations to try to earn some money. Debbie Huang, like many people who live in Bali, was disturbed by what she saw on the streets. Her strong belief in making a difference in the lives of children and their families led her to challenge her thinking on what she could do if she could rally support from those who had the means to help. It all started with her vision to feed Gojek drivers, who often do not earn enough for themselves let alone their families, through a local soto and ayam warong. The aim was to feed 50 drivers and have them survey their families and neighborhoods for those in dire need. A secondary aim was that the warong would be doing enough business to stay functional. Starting with a small fund and the support of Debbie’s family and some good friends who gave her the courage to begin, Adopt A Family was able to give out its first 50 packages within a week of surveying the Gojek drivers. By this time a WhatsApp group had collected a diverse group of innovative people who helped get the charity off and running. By enlisting not only the donations but the ideas and skills of a range of people, Adopt-A-Family grew quickly. Instagram and Facebook accounts were created to spread the word and seek donations. In less than a week a further 60 families were supported. By the third week, 250 families from Denpasar to Gianyar, families who scavenged on the dump for recyclables, and the unemployed were on the list of families receiving support. A team of willing and dedicated team of volunteer delivery people were on the ground, and donations were rolling in. By the time we held this press media, AAF had been working for 90 days where we were able to support more than 1100 families in Bali.
WHO WE HELP
The families we help are some of the lowest-paid workers in Bali. They have come to rely on the flow on effect of the tourism industry C/G/I-15 Jan 20 and were some of the first to be hit when that stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These are people you may see in your daily life. Gojek and Grab drivers. Foragers and collectors at the rubbish dump or along streets looking in bins. The pandemic has left all of them with little or no work and thieir wages have dried up to as little as IDR 25,000 (US$ 1.50) a day. Or worse yet they return home, after a long and fruitless day, empty handed. These are the families that were living hand to mouth before the pandemic and now find the hand and the mouth both quite often empty.
WHAT THEY GET HOW CAN PEOPLE PARTICIPATE

As bamboo is found in abundance in Bali and throughout Asia, a bamboo wheelchair could be easily repaired by a bamboo artisan in a village,” Brad says, adding that each wheelchair has to be custom made to fit the beneficiary’s requirements.
Up to date, Eco Living Bali and East Bali Bamboo Bikes have funded and built three bamboo wheelchairs. The first wheelchair, or the prototype, is currently on display in the Eco Living Bali shop in Kerobokan. The two other wheelchairs have been handed over to those in need. Nasrudin, who was the inspiration behind the project, received the second wheelchair, while the third wheelchair was donated to 15-year-old Nengah Macika, the son of one of the East Bali Bamboo Bikes craftsmen from Ban Village. “We have a growing list of underprivileged children and adults in Bali and Lombok who require all-terrain wheelchairs, and we are currently seeking funding to make them,” says Brad. “We are initially only targeting Bali and Lombok, however, we plan to expand to other islands soon and then hopefully the rest of Asia.”

Nengah Macika’s Story Macika was a healthy baby until three months of age when he developed high fever and suffered several seizures. Since then, Macika’s growth and mobility have been affected. He is also non-vocal and struggles to communicate with his family. Until 2004, when the East Bali Poverty Project established monthly parent-baby health posts in neighboring Cegi, there were no health facilities near Ben village, where Macika lives. In 2005, the East Bali Poverty Project found a volunteer professional massage therapist who trained Macika’s parents to give him daily massages, but he has shown little improvement. While Macika’s mobility remains restricted, his new all-terrain bamboo wheelchair means that he can now get around more freely. www.ecolivingbali.com https://www.eastbalipovertyproject.org https://www.eastbalibamboobikes.com By Anita Copyright © 2019 Bali Advertiser You can read all past articles of BA Feature Article at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz C/Ho/G-1 Jan. 20

But what I really need to mention is that the undesirable side Avocado seeds have long been used in their native effects of ‘blanching’ are reduced nutrients and a lowered homeland of Mexico and Central America to treat a range chlorophyll content!
Haven’t you noticed that celery stalks in the store are a pale shade of green, transitioning to white at the base? That’s not how it looks in my garden and that is the heart of my gripe with the celery food faddists. Real home-grown celery is a chlorophyll filled deeper green - better said ‘chlorofilled’ perhaps! A green juice should have chlorophyll levels at a premium, yet your average store-bought celery is deficient somewhat. For health it’s much better to be juicing some parsley which is especially high in chlorophyll, and also extremely bitter - but hey, no pain no gain! But you can always just throw a few sprigs in with a watermelon juice, you’ll barely taste it, but the benefits will be there as parsley is extremely nutrient dense - a tiny amount goes a long way.

TOKO BUKU Everyday Balinese By I Gusti Made Sutjaja
The dialogs are presented twice in two different speech levels consisting of almost entirely different words. Depending upon whom you are talking to, separate vocabularies are used in Balinese. The first version, denoted “A,” represents the lumrah or common tongue. The second, denoted “B,” is alus or refined Balinese. There are actually six different speech levels from the highest alus singgih used to address priests and rajas down to the lowest forms, Bahasa Kasar (common languages), which includes not only lumrah but the andap and wake everyday languages used all over Bali by children, young people and for some reason by the inhabitants of northern Buleleng District. Each lesson on food, greetings, shopping, money, finding your way, etc. contains a list of words in both lumrah and alus forms, followed by their Indonesian and English translations. In these sections, you’re able to compare the different words and expressions of the two speech levels in column format. These vocabulary lists repeat and reinforce the words and expressions used in the dialogs. The most difficult part of learning Balinese are the different speech levels, even though they follow much the same grammatical rules. The differences lie in word choice. For example, there are three different words for “eat,” depending upon the circumstances and who you are addressing. In the most refined language (alus), it is ngerayun. In the second level (lumrah), it is ngajeng. In the lowest speech level, the word for “eat” is ngamah. Lumrah words are used when participants of equal social status are conversing. Everyday Balinese is a concise and user-friendly guide to the Balinese language targeted to anyone who wishes to learn colloquial Balinese. There are 23 lessons (not exercises) in this course book, each with a dialog that centers around daily life. These realistic beginner conversations are a great way to learn Balinese as it is really spoken. Though tending to be a bit dry, the dialogs are easy to follow and cover realistic situations.

Reviews of English language books on Indonesia
Indonesian Children’s Favorite Stories by Joan Suyenaga and Salim Martowiredjo Indonesian Children’s Favorite Stories is a charmingly illustrated multicultural children’s book which presents Indonesian fairy tales that provide insights into the country’s rich oral culture. Indonesian folktales are no different from those of the Western world - the triumph of the virtuous over evil, the awarding of a just prize for good deeds, etc. - except that exotic Malay cultural and physical environments serve as the backdrop for the stories. Set in tropical rainforests, on balmy beaches and in the remote highlands of the earth’s largest island chain, these stories represent only a few of the rich store of Indonesian legends that give glimpses of Indonesia’s ethnic groups, rural life and its unique plants and animals ranging from Sumatra to Sulawesi and Maluku (but mostly Java). Though the stories are aimed at children ages 5-12, readers young and old will find little to offend here and much to enjoy. Indonesian folktales generally incorporate one or more main themes: obedience, envy, men’s wrath, women’s loyalty, sibling rivalry, trickery and childishness. The characters are often poor but resourceful farmers, woodsmen, carpenters, fishermen and other commoners who confront demons, royalty and evildoers. Magic spells are cast and the help of a spirit is enlisted to win fortunes or the hand of a maiden. They are stories of lowly people and humble creatures in trouble. A large and scary forest is always not too far away. Teasers but not spoilers: “True Strength” tells the story of a wise, humble and clever man who thwarted three thieves when they realized that they were in the presence of someone with supernatural power far greater than theirs. “The Buffalo’s Victory” is set in West Sumatra’s land of the Minangkabau, a people who live in peace until the King of Java deems them subservient to him. When the Minang kingdom is threatened by the much more powerful Majapahit kingdom of East Java, they propose a contest to decide their fate by pitting a baby water buffalo against their opponent’s huge champion bull. This story reflects the inter-regional/ inter-ethnic rivalry that exists all over Indonesia to this day.
In “The Woodcarver’s True Love,” a princess from the island of Simbau in the Sulawesi Sea chooses to marry a worthy commoner over many rich suitors who had gathered before the king. This is a tale about a pure heart and the real meaning of love. “The Magic Headcloth” relates how one wise ruler protected Java by fighting the Giant King Dewata Cengkar. The hero, Aji Saka, is given the honor of bestowing a great gift on the people - the knowledge of letters. Widely and perennially popular are the traditional kancil (mousedeer) fables that applaud the heroics of a small, weak yet cunning figure who uses his intelligence to triumph over animals much larger and more powerful than himself. In “Kancil Steals Cucumbers,” the mousedeer tricks a farmer’s dog into letting him free after being caught eating cucumbers. According to historians, the kancil symbolizes the ideal Javanese man who solves problems in a calm, level-headed way to avoid open conflict. Mousedeer stories have been turned into books, numberless cartoons and wayang (puppet) performances. The oldest written version is a song-poem written in 1822. A frog wins the heart of a princess and accomplishes miraculous acts in “The Frog and the Magic Axe.” In spite of his ugly appearance and because of her undying faith in him, the frog turns into a handsome man who she marries. In the funny “Caterpillar Story,” you don’t know where the tale is going as a series of unexpected events culminates with a poor village boy marrying the village chief’s daughter. daughter of a poor farmer, escapes from the clutches of the evil green giant Buto Ijo by using magic tricks. There are notable differences between this new 2019 edition and the previous 2005 edition. Though this new edition has the same foreword, stories, illustrations, number of pages, it’s printed in a larger format on glossier paper which makes the book easier to read and brings to best advantage the attractive illustrations. Other multicultural children’s books in the Tuttle series that have been retold for international audiences include fairytales from India, Singapore, the Philippines, China and Tibet, Korea, Bali and Vietnam. Indonesian Children’s Favorite Stories highlights folktales and legends that are some of the most popular and beloved in Indonesia. With the usual pantheon of astute princesses and virtuous peasants, each gives insights into the country’s environment, traditional culture and morals. Even in the age of YouTube, they offer a taste of how universal values of bravery, cleverness, true love, kindness and loyalty have been transmitted to Indonesian children for hundreds of years. Now with this larger format edition, grownups are able share the stories with young readers of all backgrounds in the West. Indonesian Children’s Favorite Stories by Joan Suyenaga and Salim Martowiredjo, Tuttle Publishing 2015, ISBN 978-080-484-5113, hardcover, 64 pages, dimensions: 9 x 0.3 x 9 inches.

By focusing on moving the joints in their full range of motion, we can reverse the aging process and inflammation
Chris has firm ideas about joint health and aging. “My approach is very simple,” he told me. “Movement is medicine. As we age, we dry up. Inflammation (arthritis) comes from not moving the tissue. Movement is the best anti-inflammatory for the joints. When a joint is painful, we tend to move less, but that is the source of the pain. My balance is better; I can stand on one leg now, like the old days! And my hips are much better, so much more flexible, the way they were many years ago. The improvement is quite magical.”
The Benefits of Positive Emotions Negative emotions such as fear or anger are a natural part of our instinctual survival techniques. We see a snake, a car coming at us, or a large coconut over our heads, and fear focuses our energy to avoid the threat and save ourselves. We have a disagreement with a friend and our anger consumes us well after we’ve had the confrontation. This is the problem with our habitual experience with negative emotions. They stay with us, clouding what is happening in our present moment experience.
X: “I tend to be rather skeptical this kind of thing and certainly was doubtful when I started with Chris. But there is no denying that my rather low energy levels have improved noticeably since we started and that my walking has become less bothersome. A few days ago, I suddenly found that my recently quite painful arthritic left thumb is barely hurting anymore. I will say that my list of aches and pains has become shorter recently, in fact after I started attending this class.” As for me, I am moving much more easily than before.
While we can’t avoid these emotions, because they are a natural part of us to ensure our survival, we can cultivate positive emotions, which have a lasting effect on our brains and our everyday lives.
Of course, you have to do the movements daily, but because no equipment is required they can be visited during the day while taking a break from the computer or sitting in a traffic jam.
Research done at the University of North Carolina has found that positive emotions such as joy, contentment, gratitude, and love open our minds to more possibilities in our lives. Negative emotions narrow that field to a thin focus.
“CARs is a good foundation but any kind of movement is positive”, Chris says. “ I want my clients to not hire me to take care of your joints. I want to teach you to do it yourself.” For more on gratitude go here: https://emmons.faculty. ucdavis.edu Chris meets small to large groups in hour-long sessions
