Nyepi and The Rituals Nyepi is a Balinese “Day of Silence” that is commemorated every Isakawarsa (Saka new year) according to the Balinese calendar (in 2017, it falls on March 28). It is a Hindu celebration mainly celebrated in Bali, Indonesia. Nyepi, a public holiday in Indonesia, is a day of silence, fasting and meditation for the Balinese.
The ritual is performed in Pura (Balinese temple) near the sea (Pura Segara) and meant to purify Arca, Pratima, and Pralingga (sacred objects) belonging to several temples, also to acquire sacred water from the sea.
• Second, The Bhuta Yajna Ritual is performed in order to vanquish the negative elements and create a balance with God, Mankind, and Nature. The ritual is also meant to appease Batara Kala by Pecaruan offering. Devout Hindu Balinese villages usually make ogoh-ogoh.
Observed from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning, Nyepi is a day reserved for self-reflection, and as such, anything that might interfere with that purpose is restricted. The main restrictions are no lighting fires (and lights must be kept low); no working; no entertainment or pleasure; no traveling; and, for some, no talking or eating at all. The effect of these prohibitions is that Bali’s usually bustling streets and roads are empty, there is little or no noise from TVs and radios, and few signs of activity are seen even inside homes. The only people to be seen outdoors are the Pecalang, traditional security men who patrol the streets to ensure the prohibitions are being followed. Although Nyepi is primarily a Hindu holiday, non-Hindu residents and tourists are not exempt from the restrictions. Although they are free to do as they wish inside their hotels, no one is allowed onto the beaches or streets, and the only airport in Bali remains closed for the entire day. The only exceptions granted are for emergency vehicles responding to life-threatening conditions and women about to give birth. On the day after Nyepi, known as Ngembak Geni, social activity picks up again quickly, as families and friends gather to ask forgiveness from one another, and to perform certain religious rituals together.
Ogoh-ogoh are statues built for the Ngrupuk parade, which takes place on the eve of Nyepi day in Bali, Indonesia. Ogoh-ogoh normally have form of mythological beings, mostly demons. As with many creative endeavours based on Balinese Hinduism, the creation of Ogoh-ogoh represents spiritual aims inspired by Hindu philosophy. The main purpose of the making of Ogoh-ogoh is the purification of the natural environment of any spiritual pollutants emitted from the activities of living beings (especially humans). The forms of Ogoh-ogoh represent the Bhuta-Kala (Bhuta: eternal energy, Kala: eternal time), according to Hindu teachings. The imperceptible potentials of nature cannot be thoroughly explored by anyone. Philosophically, civilized men are required to manage the natural resources without damaging the environment itself.
RITUALS • First, The Melasti Ritual is performed 3–4 days beforehand. It is dedicated to Sanghyang Widhi Wasa.
Aside from being the symbol of Bhuta-Kala, Ogoh-ogoh is considered a symbol of modes of nature that form the malicious characters of living beings. Each village usually
NC/Re/G-15 March 17
build one Ogoh-ogoh mainly built by each village’s Seka Truna Truni (Balinese village’s youth organization), but often some smaller ogoh-ogoh also built by groups of children around the village. After being paraded on a convoy around the town, finally it is burnt to ashes in a cemetery as a symbol of self-purification. An Ogoh-ogoh is normally standing on a pad built of timber planks and bamboo. The pad is designed to sustain the Ogoh-ogoh while it is being lifted and carried around the village or the town square. There are normally eight or more men carrying the Ogoh-ogoh on their shoulders. This procession is accompanied by orchestral music performed by the youth. The use of flares is also a main part of the parade. During the procession, the Ogoh-ogoh is rotated counterclockwise three times. This act is done at every T-junction and crossroad of the village. Rotating the effigies during the cremational parade and the eve of Nyepi represents the contact of the bodies with the spirits. It is intended to bewilder the evil spirits so that they go away and cease harming human beings. After the ogoh-ogoh have been paraded around the village, the Ngrupuk ritual takes place, which involves burning the ogoh-ogoh. • Third, the Nyepi Rituals are performed as follows: Amati Geni: No fire or light, including no electricity Amati Karya: No working Amati Lelunganan: No travelling Amati Lelanguan: Fasting and no revelry/self entertainment • Fourth, the Yoga/Brata Ritual starts at 6:00 a.m. and continues to 6:00 a.m. the next day. • Fifth, the Ngembak Agni/Labuh Brata Ritual is performed for all Hindus to forgive each other and to welcome the new days to come. • Sixth and finally, The Dharma Shanti Rituals is performed after all the Nyepi rituals are finished. Restaurant & Food
C/R/I-15 March 17
C/R/G-16 March 16
A Little Happy Chappy! Happy Chappy arrived on Jln. Braban, Kerobokan two years ago, the cuisine was basic Chinese, mainly Cantonese, with excellent attention to detail, an instant success. Simple food done well! That is the secret of success everywhere. These owners actually go to restaurants themselves, the number of items in each serve [dim sum] are clearly shown, all dishes can be ordered in small or large portions. Things you want to know when ordering for a number of people. In Bali you usually have to ask the waitress, who rarely knows the answer. With the immediate success of Happy Chappy Kerobokan it was decided to open a small outpost in Canggu, mainly to service the ever growing takeaway and home delivery clientele. They did not expect many customers to dine in, in fact the kitchen is larger than the dining area. They were wrong! Most evenings they have a full house, many diners preferring to eat local rather than face the ever increasing traffic chaos of Bali. Dim Sum is the traditional Chinese starting point, particularly when the major cuisine is Cantonese as it is here. The choice is wide and varied. Perfect Har Gow, plump prawns wrapped in that translucent wheat starch ribbed dumpling. It is an item that is on every dim sum menu, and one that is not always done well [either over steamed or originating from the freezer]. Not so here at Happy Chappy, they are made fresh and then steamed to order, perfect! Pour some chilli jam into the small provided dishes, stab a dumpling with your chop sticks and dip in the chilli, wonderful! Other steamed dumplings include Shu Mai [half moon shape filled with chicken & mushroom, a mix of pork and prawn or prawn & chicken], The Steamed Buns are stuffed with BBQ Pork, the only way to eat Bak Pao, no halal here! Other fillings include Peking Duck. Fried dim sum includes mini Spring Rolls, fillings include Prawn & Mango or Vegetarian. The dipping sauce is a mild chilli. Szechuan style Wontons can also be ordered deep fried [or steamed], the filling either pork or chicken. Other appetizers include many old fashioned and traditional ones, rarely seen in ’modern’ restaurants [most trying to be too clever!]. Sesame Prawn Toast fingers with a soy-ginger dipping sauce, Prawn Butterfly Cutlets, flattened and crumbed, dip them in the lemon mayonnaise. One of the great Chinese entrees is Sang Choy Bow. Originally minced pigeon was used for this Cantonese classic but that has almost universally been replaced with chicken, one of the options here. At Happy Chappy you can also have it with Peking Duck, BBQ Pork or a Vegetarian mix, but for me the duck is the best choice. Using the cold crisp lettuce as a bowl, you spoon the mince into it and pour some sauce on top. When
served with the usual iceberg lettuce, a messy dribble is often the result as you attempt to eat this wonderful combination. In Bali a different lettuce leaf has been found, long thin and firm. It holds the mince and is perfect for eating without causing any disasters [pictured]. I have been eating in restaurants, almost every day, for more years than I care to remember. However I am still often presented with something new. It can be just a very simple dish, and like this one, refreshingly different. Salt & Pepper Squid is on many menus, not only Chinese, in fact it almost seems to have become one of those dishes that must be on every ‘modern’ menu. I rarely order it as it is too often similar to chewing rubber. Hence, surprise and interest at finding Salt & Pepper Chicken on this menu, again it was a very simple dish, crumbed chicken pieces [tender but crunchy] tossed in salt, pepper and finely chopped garlic and herbs. It is so good you keep eating it throughout the meal [maybe even ordering another serve]. The mains are old traditional; Cantonese roasts, rice/noodles or specials. Every suburban Chinese restaurant anywhere in the world serves these old common dishes, kids are raised on them; Sweet & Sour Pork, Lemon Chicken, Honey Prawns and Crispy Skin Chicken. All come from the Happy Chappy kitchen expertly prepared and cooked, simple food, done well! Cantonese Roasts are unique, whether they be duck [with plum sauce], Chicken [with that crispy skin], or Pork Belly. All served traditionally, on the bone. Char Siu is one of my all time favourites, strips of lean pork seasoned with honey, 5 spice, fermented bean curd, soy and hoisin. These days in the food courts of Singapore they are usually dry and boring but at Happy Chappy, perfect. All roast duck and chicken courses can be ordered as half or full bird.

Noodles are every which way! Lo Mein are wheat flour noodles stir-fried with Chinese style vegetables and your choice of chicken, beef, prawn, fish or pork. Ramen Noodles are served in a broth of soy and chilli with roast pork or chicken with dumplings, beef and mushrooms or prawns and fish. Fried Rice and how you eat it tells where you are from. The Chinese use it as a final course, alone, to cleanse the palate. Westerners tend to eat it with the meals instead of steamed rice. Special meals are anything done different, Kung Pao Chicken [more international style without the fire of Szechuan pepper and peppercorns] is on every menu but here the Kung Pao Prawns are great, with large plump and firm king prawns, not little school ones, the sauce with a nice tang. If you want something more sweet then order the Honey Prawns with Sesame, more traditional try the Salted Egg Prawn and curry leaf. Something different is the Chilli Pork, served with mandarin pancakes.

A special menu for children keeps them happy. There is a choice of three dishes, with smaller serves, all with mini spring rolls as a starter.
Reviews that appear in Bali Advertiser are based on actual visits to the establishments listed, without the knowledge of the restaurants, and are not paid for by the individual restaurants.
Happy Chappy Berawa is much more than just a pickup and takeaway place. In fact I will be surprised if a move to larger premises nearby is not announced very soon.
Opinions expressed here are those of Gerry Williams and not necessarily those of Bali Advertiser. Gerry Williams attempts to write from a ‘typical’ diner’s perspective and, whilst quality of food is the most important criteria overall, value for money is the real measuring stick.
In Australia there is a ‘local’ Chinese restaurant in almost every town, no matter how small. For the residents of Canggu & Berawa, Happy Chappy is their local, and they love it!

Keep Bali Clean Surf Challenge – Slash don’t Trash Bali is facing an environmental and potential health disaster with the trash on the much loved island.
Clean have already distributed over 30,000 reusable bags to consumers in Bali.
Only 3 decades ago, plastic was not used in Bali. Most Balinese would bring a woven bag to carry items home from the markets. Today, almost every item that is purchased throughout Bali, from ceremonial offerings to food, to general house hold items, is packed in plastic. Bali’s population is estimated at 4-5 million people and most residents receive a minimum of two plastic bags per day. That’s close to 10 million plastic bags per day.
Keep Bali Clean is currently running an anti-littering campaign on local TV station DEWATA TV. The campaign is funded through T shirt sales and donations from individuals and business. Their target is to have 4 commercials playing daily.
With insufficient education on the disposal of rubbish, many of Bali’s millions of plastic bags end up littering the environment, finding their way into the water streams and eventually ending up in the ocean. Keep Bali Clean is a campaign aimed at reducing Bali’s current littering problem. Through donations and sales Keep Bali
Made Raditya Rondi, 4 times ASIAN surfing Champion, has recently become the latest Keep Bali Clean Ambassador. In support of the Keep Bali Clean campaign a surf contest will be held on Sunday 9th April, commencing at 4pm and running though until after sunset. Supported by LOKO Bali and Finns Beach Club, the event will feature 16 of Bali’s best battling it out in the waves of Pantai Berawa, directly in front of Finns Beach Club. We suggest getting there early to grab a prime vantage point on
the beach or within Finns Beach Club. Entry to Finns Beach Club will be available via a donation to Keep Bali Clean (minimum Rp 50,000) or purchase of Keep Bali Clean merchandise, available on the day. There will be raffles and prizes and the chance to learn more about this wonderful campaign and all they are doing to Keep Bali Clean. May the cleanest surfer win! Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch
How do Balinese Construct Arguments? There are many examples of how the life and thoughts of Balinese people is the complete opposite of other cultures. As western society, and now many other societies, industrialized and put more emphasis on scientific thought and consequent secularism, more and more people started to think in a scientific and analytical way. Fact-based science resulted in mass education and society became more orderly and structured. This affected most of what we do and most of what we think. Critical thinking is a result of all of this. The Internet has in some ways aided the development critical thinking, but in others – through fake news and pseudoscience websites – has impeded it.

From my 20 years of observation and interaction with Balinese – and of course I’ve experienced argumentation and debate with Balinese over the last two decades – the way most people here construct an argument is very different to how more scientific based cultures do. It is often based on superstition, religious beliefs and fear. The complete lack education in critical thinking at Indonesian schools and universities is also a major factor.
Jl. Raya Basangkasa No. 88 Seminyak, Kuta, Bali Tel. +62(361) 7951275 / 736098 +62 851 0095 1275 Fax. +62(361) 736098 NEW OPENING: Jl. Raya Seminyak No. 75 Seminyak Center
For example, many people use a lot of emotion and little logic to form a premise for their reasoning. Often this is based on a lack of education and a habit of trusting in what you believe rather than what you know as fact. People often use racism or prejudice to reason why the other person cannot understand a mistake or problem that they have made. This sprouts from emotive reasoning of course. “You’ll never understand because you’re not Balinese!” or “It’s tradition, so it has to be done like that!” or “You’re not a native, if you don’t like it go home!”

Pride is another huge factor in argumentation. Most Balinese are extremely proud and if they ever feel like they are losing face and their pride could be hurt they will normally cut the argument short by going silent or removing themselves from it abruptly. While Balinese will be ok to debate something mildly, if things become too heated they normally avoid potential drawn-out conflict (this also applies to some other ethnicities in Indonesia, for example Javanese). As with any generalization, this is not true for all Balinese. I know a number of people who have developed critical thinking, but most of these people are from the younger generation with a wider general education. As more and more Balinese mix with westerners are able to sieve through the facts on the Internet, people will eventually develop more critical thinking on their own whether it is taught in schools or not.

MUSIC MATTERS
band pulled out alll the stops because they knew who they were fronting for!
And then it happened.....It’s so easy, Mr. Brownstone, Chinese Greetings music pioneers and welcome to this March Democracy, Welcome to the jungle, Double talking Jive, edition of Music Matters, here in your local Bali Advertiser. Better, Estranged, Live and let die, Rocket queen, You could be mine, Attitude, This I love, Civil war, Coma before a bit of They came they saw they shot everyone and got them tangled a rest then... in a rose garden of blistering metal. Yes, it’s official, Guns, and Roses smashed Perth arena to peices. Supported by Wolf- Slash’s guitar solo. Speak softly, Sweet child of mine, mother the band put on a blistering performance not seen Yesterdays, Used to love her, Wish you were here, November since their early days back in LA. rain, Knocking on heavens door, finishing off with Night train Now there were some technical issues and some rumors of lypsynching some of the songs but overall it really was an awesome gig. Here is my highly edited account of events...... Tickets are always a pain especially since you had to fly from Bali and Ticketmaster, the official website supporting the gig had sold out of standing tickets, I was hardly going to watch the gunners seated now was I????? So on arriving in Perth one day before the gig I hopped into a cab headed for the hotel and worked out a battle plan. There is a website which is huge in Australia called Gumtree, this site allows people to sell pretty much anything to anybody else and after about half an hour I found what I was looking for. Two Guns and Roses tickets in Morley, one of the suburbs just outside of the city. I rang the seller from the hotel phone grabbed a beer from the mini bar and boom I was off speeding through the Perth afternoon in a taxi to pay $350 AUD for 2 tickets for tomorrows show! I got them and went to sleep that night happy in the knowlege that I was going to Gunners.
and then Paradise City as an encore.
Wow just wow, what a show. Axl seemed to have some problems with his mike early on and there was one occasion when he told the bemused audience “No Slash doesn’t want to do that.” but no one had any idea what he was referring to! But it wouldnt be Guns withought controversy now would it.
After a lazy breakfast, mid morning came, I phoned my mate and we both headed into town to meet at an Irish bar close to Domain Stadium to get in the mood. The thing was Gunners are getting on and doors opened for the gig at 5 pm so it was more like a matinee, bit odd but ok whatever its G&R they have always been on the fringes of wierd!
Axl definately is finding it harder to hit those higher notes and I reckon thats why they opened the way they did with a very low key song It’s so easy, to try and warm him up. In my oppinion he really sruggled through My Michelle, but thats what you get for a lifetime of drink drugs and rock and roll I guess. Overall the gig was great and Slash as always was a killer showman covering Led Zep like the greats.
At 5 we finished a pint or two and headed to the stadium, there was a massive crowd waiting maybe 15,000 people came to see the Gunners, we headed to the heaving bar got what we needed and caught the tail end of Wolfmothers set. Now I saw (and reported on) this band last at the GWK some 2 years ago, and have always been a fan. Their style is like that of early Led Zep and they have the same sense of epicness about how they not only sound but also interact with the crowd, Joker and the thief was awesome and so was Mother. The
This was thier last Aussie tour now they head off (on their custom designed tour plane) to Thailand and Dubai and finally Europe in summer. Cummon Bali when are we going to have a stadium big enough for bands like G&R to come play here!!! Domain stadium also just hosted Adele and next month one of my childhood favorite bands off all time Greenday will be hitting the Perth Aussie sand for thier new tour! You can bet your farm I will be there!

In other more local news, this month in Bali is slightly sad as we say goodbye to a bar I have long held as one of the best live music venues on the island. Linga Longa closed its doors for the final time. Linga Longa has been featured in this article more times than I can count and has provided some truly epic performers and some unforgettable nights of live music. I caught up with the owner of Linga Longa a week or so back to have a final beer and see what was going on and why the iconic Sanur bar had decided to close its doors for the final curtain call. TJB - Hi Rolas, this is sad news indeed. R - Yea man I am pretty cut up with it all. TJB - What happened? R - Well it was never a done deal here, we had the lease on an ad-hoc basis it was always going to go back to the original owner at the end. We had a good run of 5 years but now the owner wants the place back. TJB- So what’s he going to do with it? Is it staying as a bar? R-Na he will develop it into a hotel. TJB -Another hotel development YAWN. R -Yea I know but don’t fret we are looking for a new venue, Linga Longa will come out swinging and we still have Linga Longa two on Gili T and we are looking for a new venue in Sanur hopefully opening in a month or two. TJB - Cool man, well that’s some kind of silver lining, I look forward to seeing the new Linga Longa when its all done. R - Cheers, first beers on the house. Ok guys well that about wraps it up. If you missed G&R then don’t despair just make it to Europe this summer and see if you can catch them there but do yourself a favour and hop a plane and come and see Greenday on Sunday 30th April for probably one of their last shows. Keep it live and make it matter I’m going to lie down on a bed of roses because I feel like someone just shot me!

THE VIEW FROM THE BACK SEAT How often do we travelers entrust ourselves to strangers when we climb into a taxi in Manila or Cochin or even Canggu? For over 25 years I’ve been traveling around Asia, often alone. Countless times I’ve emerged from airports after dark to enter the back of a car driven by a stranger whose language I usually did not speak, and trusted him to take me safely to my destination. Which he (there are no women drivers in this story) almost always did.
drivers of Asia. Every country has a different taxi culture. Except in closely regulated societies like Singapore there are hierarchies, territories and, inevitably, rogues. It’s amazing, really, how few rogues there have been although with the increasingly lucrative pool of innocent tourists flooding into the region, that is changing. In Bali the airport has become a hub for predatory taxi drivers preying on jet lagged, disoriented travelers who don’t know local costs. I’ve heard of people being charged a million rupiah for a 15 minute taxi ride from Ngurah Rai airport.
A rare exception took place in Bangkok. During a brief and unpleasant interlude over a decade ago, a few drivers in that city decided to supplement their meagre incomes by kidnapping and robbing tourists, usually on the way from the airport at night. My little drama unfolded in the city, in broad daylight. I climbed into the cab, gave an address which I often visited and lapsed into daydream.
It’s a bit of a crap shoot whether you end up with a rogue or a perfectly nice man trying to make an honest living. On a recent trip to Thailand I descended into the dark underbelly of the new airport to join the taxi queue. The driver I drew in the taxi lottery was square and jovial. My bag was not large but on opening the boot it was evident that there was no room for it among the sacks of vegetables and rice and kids’ toys.
A few minutes later I noticed that we’d left familiar streets and were penetrating an unsavoury part of the city. Once alert, I saw that the driver was watching me closely in the mirror with an expression I did not like at all. I had a strong feeling that things could get unpleasant in the immediate future. Without a common language discussion was futile, but this was a superstitious culture. I changed my energy and expression and began to cast a spell with loud incantations, drawing symbols in air. Spoken language proved unnecessary; he knew exactly what I was doing. Deeply alarmed, he implored me to stop and swung the car back onto the main road. He was still shaking when I got out. That young man would not be messing with little old ladies again any time soon.
It’s a bit of a crap shoot whether you end up with a rogue or a perfectly nice man trying to make an honest living So I was apprehensive when my young nephew told me he would be flying into Bangkok a few weeks later to take a class in kick-boxing, arriving late at night. Tristan had not traveled in Asia before and was a sweet and trusting soul. I briefed him thoroughly on how to stay safe on the way in from the airport and asked him to email me as soon as he arrived. But a week went by before I heard from him, seven days during which I bit my nails up to the elbows and wondered whether to contact the Embassy. Far from viewing his taxi driver with suspicion, Tristan had immediately fallen into warm conversation. Despite the language barrier they quickly established a mutual interest in kick boxing. Instead of driving Tristan to his hotel, the driver took him home. Tris spent the week with the family in their modest dwelling, kick boxing with the neighbours on the street, playing with the kids and having a wonderful time. Which just goes to show... something. I’m sure whole dissertations have been written about the taxi
His modest traveling bag sat next to ours in the trunk. Once we’d checked into our hotel each day he would take over the car, unpacking his bag, washing his smalls and hanging them over the mirror to dry each night and curling up to sleep in the back seat. We were paying his living expenses as part of the car rental contract, but he preferred to pocket the cash. His family lived in the north and he saved every rupee to go and see them once a year. We passed him peppermints over the seat, bought him cups of tea and tried to engage him in pleasantries ... after all, we were stuck in this ancient car together day after day. But he was not interested in us; we were just another job. Further south many years later we encountered a driver much more inclined to communicate. Flying into Kerala very late one night, we waited while a driver from the queue was roused from his slumbers in his car to take us into Fort Cochin. Michael, a large and sleepy Christian gentlemen, informed us that it would help him stay awake if we sang to him, praise-god songs being preferred. We searched our collective lapsed Unitarian, Muslim and Hindu memories for hymns as we all struggled to stay awake on the long trip from the airport. Michael was soon out of his geographical comfort zone, clearly having no idea where we were going. He confessed to be taking the shift for his friend whose wife was having a baby that night; Michael was in fact a voluble plumber. We arrived at our hotel very late indeed and waved him farewell, seriously concerned that poor Michael might never find his way home again.
He wedged it into the front seat, being careful not to wrinkle the pressed shirt that was hanging from the head rest. (Drivers who own their own vehicles inhabit them as hermit crabs do their shells. Fresh shirts hang from the door. Prayer beads, icons and garlands dangle from the mirror. There’s always a bottle of water or cold tea, a clutch of pens, the inevitable hand phone and often a towel.) Getting into the back, I was reminded that Thai taxi drivers customarily disable the rear seat belts. Flag fall was 35 baht - one US dollar. Imagine spending ten plus hours a day sitting in horrendous Bangkok traffic. Much of that would be in close proximity with one or more of the 14 million tourists who visit the country each year and with whom no companionable chat would be possible. It’s an isolated and sedentary occupation yet my driver, and most, bore it cheerfully. Long haul drivers have their own protocols. Twenty five years ago we spent a fortnight touring Rajasthan in an old Ambassador. Ramesh the driver had no English and we no Hindi, but he had no desire to communicate with us. He kept a philosophical silence while careening across the desert avoiding cows, camels and small boys on large black bicycles.
I’d planned to close this story with a review of my agreeable taxi experiences in Bangkok. But on my second-to-last journey the driver turned off the meter a few minutes into the ride and took out a box cutter which he started waving around while glaring at me in the rear view mirror. Which just goes to show ... something.

Computer & Internet Social Media Marketing Trends for 2017 Social media tools, sites and apps seem to change almost overnight and this can be confusing for companies looking to target the huge numbers of people using social media. I surveyed some of the top business and marketing sites (Forbes, HubSpot, BrandWatch, Business2Community) to see their predictions for social media trends in 2017. Here are the top trends predicted for the coming year:
• Live video Companies are increasingly using live video as a marketing tool. Another term for live video is ‘authentic content’ as live video is often un-scripted or un-rehearsed. Videos on social media have more engagement than any other type of content. Periscope and Facebook Live are the most widely used live video features on social media. However, Instagram and Twitter launched their own services at the end of 2016, which may cut into Facebook and Periscope market share. Other social media sites will start to offer live video content as well. One popular use of live video is to screen events to a wider audience. Another popular use by brands is to screen Q&A sessions or product demonstrations. Live interviews are an increasingly popular use of this medium. Live video series, such as Allure’s Lipstick Roulette, where staff demonstrate new lipsticks while responding live to customer feedback on social media, are gaining loyal audiences. Millennials love video content and consume more live video than any other age group, and this trend is set to grow in 2017. • Virtual reality 360-degree virtual reality video is a fairly new marketing tool but one that is predicted to grow in use rapidly. (Think Pokémon Go.) Customers using a virtual reality headset or viewer are transported directly to the site of the video and experience it as if they were there themselves, which can have a powerful effect. The benefit of virtual reality is that it places the watcher directly in the action and creates better engagement. Roughly 75% of Millennials use and like virtual reality content. • Messaging apps Messaging apps, such as Facebook Messenger, What’s App or WeChat [which is hugely popular in China] are used by over 4 billion people worldwide. According to Forbes, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber and WeChat have more users than the Big Four sites: Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and Instagram. Smart brands are using messaging apps to interact directly with their customers, on a one-to-one basis. For example, the Hyatt Hotel chain uses Facebook Messenger service to take room bookings, answer customer queries and provide destination information. Messaging apps are proving more popular than email and phone calls as the way to interact with new and existing customers and build brand loyalty. According to Forbes, 63% of Millennials are more loyal to brands that they interact with via a messaging app. Increasingly, if you click on an ad on Facebook, you are taken to a Customer Service chat window for that brand. More than a third of consumers state that they prefer using social media to a phone call to resolve issues or have questions answered. • Chatbots Chatbots – a messaging application driven by a basic artificial intelligence that can interact with customers – are becoming more popular and will be increasingly used by businesses in the future. A chatbot can handle basic customer service functions, such as providing information,
answering frequently asked questions or help customers with purchases. The popular vocal personal assistant, Siri, on iPhone, is one example. • E-commerce via social media Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram all offer consumers the ability to buy products directly through social media. For example, Pinterest offers a ‘Buy It’ pin that allows people who are looking at items on the site to click directly through to the business home page and purchase an item they see on Pinterest. According to a survey by Aimia, 56% of consumers who follow a certain business on social media do so in order to browse their products and a third of online consumers are using social media to shop for new products.

• Mobile advertising Advertising through social media sites is becoming more and more popular. Facebook earned 80% of its $7B total revenue from mobile ads last year. Fully 75% of companies who have a presence on Facebook paid to promote ads for their products. Twitter ads are also becoming more popular as a way to promote products and services. Snapchat and Instagram are also beginning to offer advertising services through their app. Increased competition for ad revenue between the major social media sites will lead to more creative advertising ideas and tools for businesses to use, especially for the sites that are newcomers to paid advertising. • Ephemeral content Ephemeral, or temporary content, is growing in popularity. Some authors have used this medium to release a novel that you can only read once – the text disappears as it is read. Snapchat became well known for its use of content that disappeared after it was shared and Instagram is beginning to use the same feature. Ephemeral video can be used for events, contests and giveaways, interviews, holidayrelated marketing, live events or new product launches. • Narrower focus Brands will start to narrow their focus and concentrate on the social media sites that have been worked best for them, instead of spreading their advertising revenue and efforts over many sites. • Social Influencers Brands will continue to expand their use of ‘social influencers.’ These are people active on social media, often bloggers or Instagrammers, who have large followings and can inspire trust and loyalty in a brand’s products among their followers. Companies will often pay social influencers directly to post Tweets or Instagram photos that promote their products. Influencers are also invited to live events, paid to attend conferences and given products or services for free. As influencers are often called on for comment by conventional media, their influence can extend far beyond their own social media circles. Most businesses, about 84%, have marketing plans involving social influencers for the coming year.

Many expatriates in Bali will have experienced the frustration of trying to prove their residential address to apply for a bank account or investment product or worse, when they wish to encash an investment. It can be problematic due to the fact that many homes in Bali do not have a physical address. PO Box numbers or a c/o address are unacceptable to regulators. Fortunately other options are possible such as an employer’s letter but this varies from company to company. I am aware of one case of an investor trying for six months to secure the release of funds in a matured savings plan. In another case the problem was solved by means of a certified translation of a declaration by a village head that the person had built a house in the village. Residents of Bali also suffer from the same issue as everyone else in Indonesia which is treated as a ‘Category 3’ country requiring additional due diligence processes including proof of source of wealth. Declaration of tax residency and tax identification numbers is now becoming universally required.

In an even worse case a sick and elderly investor who had held his investment for twenty years had difficulty meeting all the compliance demands and the life company released funds to him weeks later only after I had sent them a photo of him seriously ill in his hospital bed. Both these cases related to investments in companies based in Guernsey, where it appears their only concern is to satisfy the regulator even if it results in the destruction of client relationships. In fairness, other jurisdictions do not appear to be harassing investors to the same degree although some are now requiring references from a lawyer or accountant, all of course at the expense of the client.

In recent weeks I have seen some bad examples of investors being hounded to produce precise and correctly certified documents just to make small withdrawals from their portfolios. In one case a life company demanded proof of a change of name even though the proof had been provided three years previously. They also demanded fresh proof of signature.

it in with ease? Not anymore.
• CRS – Common Reporting Standards, developed in response to the G20 request and approved by the OECD Council in 2014, calls on jurisdictions to obtain information from their financial institutions and automatically exchange that information with other jurisdictions on an annual basis. By next year this should be fully implemented. • The ‘Panama Papers’ – A huge leak in April 2016 of some 11.5 million documents that exposed how the rich and powerful use tax havens to hide their wealth.

Remember the days when you could easily open and operate a bank account? Or when you might be offered a cup of tea and a chat with the manager? Or when you could easily start a savings plan with a big international life company and make withdrawals or cash

So there you have it. We all have to pay the penalty by way of painful compliance requirements as a result of decades of tax avoidance by the rich and perhaps the not-so-rich and to combat the evils of terrorism and the laundering of money obtained through criminal activities.
So what can we do about it? Unless some Trump-like figure decides to cut a swath through the mass of regulation there is little we can do but accept the fact that it is here to stay and will continue to pervade every aspect of the banking and financial services industry. But we can take measures to make life a bit easier. Here are some suggestions: • Make sure you always have available good copies of your current passport. Leave room on the copies for certification. If you are using a lawyer or notary make sure they follow the institution’s instructions including the wording exactly. • For proof of address the institution will prefer a utility bill (not usually practical for an expatriate), a recent bank or credit card statement. Not so easy these days when they are often sent out only via the Internet. I have found printouts are sometimes accepted but don’t count on it. Certified copies of a KITAS, KITAP or KTP may be accepted, but they must show your residential address. Failing these an employer’s letter may be accepted but it must provide all the details requested by the institution. Lease agreements may be accepted but they would have to be translated if not in English. • Tax residency declarations are becoming universal so make sure you have tax identification numbers available or a good explanation as to why you don’t have one. One reason could be that you are living in Bali on a retirement visa which does not require paying tax. • Proof of source of wealth. Be prepared to provide details and evidence if requested. Retain copies of work contracts, payslips, property sales contracts etc. • In case one is required, be sure to have a friendly lawyer or accountant available to provide a reference. Also make sure you can quickly access a notary who, together with a few other categories can certify documents for you. Not all the above may be necessary but the better prepared you are the smoother and less hassle any transaction will be.

At the end of the day you will be helping to make the world a safer and fairer place. But it may not appear that way if you opened an account twenty years ago in the manager’s office over a cup of tea and now have to prove you are the same person.
So what has brought about all these requirements? The answer is multi-fold. Here are some of the events and international agreements that have created the need for such high levels of compliance: • FATF – the Financial Action Task Force, set up by the G7 group of nations in 1989 to combat money laundering. • 9/11 – the first major terrorist attack on the US. This led to even greater controls to counter terrorist financing. • FATCA – The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, a 2010 United States federal law to enforce the requirement for United States persons, including those living outside the U.S., to file yearly reports on their non-U.S. financial accounts.

Coconut as Superfood Indonesia is home to some of the world’s most nutritious superfoods. Last month we spoke to tempeh expert Professor Winarno about the nutritious, versatile Indonesian staple, and this month we’re cracking open the coconut craze with Indonesia’s Ambassador to the World Food Travel Association, Ibu Amanda Katili Niode from Gorontalo, Sulawesi.
He is a man of sense who doesn’t grieve for what he hasn’t, but rejoices in what he has.
In Sulawesi, in addition to coconut milk, toasted coconut is a distinct ingredient in some of its dishes. Nasu likku, a chicken dish from Makassar, South Sulawesi, is made from chicken, galangal, tamarind, lemon grass and toasted coconut. Tabu moitomo is a black beef soup from Gorontalo that uses more than 30 herbs and spices with toasted coconut as its main ingredient. In East Java, shredded coconut is used in some of its snacks. Ketan intip from the City of Ngawi is made from glutinous rice, coated with soybean powder and coarse shredded coconut. Berdapan is a traditional snack with a unique shape made from grated cassava stuffed with coarsely grated coconut cooked with palm sugar and pandan leaves. Madumongso is a sweet snack in Madiun, made from black glutinous rice, coconut milk, sugar, and shredded coconut, wrapped in colorful paper.
Ibu Amanda, what are the nutritional benefits of coconut? What makes it a superfood?
Are there any environmental concerns surrounding coconut production?
Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is high in energy, fibers, vitamins (C, E, B1, B3, B5, and B6), and minerals (copper, calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc). It contains lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid that increases good HDL cholesterol levels in the blood, preventing blockages of blood vessels. Clinical trials indicate the benefits of coconut for reducing the risk of chronic disease and treatment of numerous diseases such as diabetes, cancer, psoriasis, brain malfunction and high blood pressure.
Cocos nucifera is found in all tropical and subtropical regions. It grows in many habitats at 0–600m near the equator. The environmental concern surrounding coconut production is the use of excessive pesticides in coconut plantations. Also, the expansion of coconut growing regions by cutting trees in primary forest will increase carbon emissions, the major cause of global warming. Monoculture coconut plantations that replace native plants and biodiversity can take a major toll on the soil, making farmers use chemical fertilizers to boost productivity.
Coconut water consists of simple sugar, electrolytes, minerals, and bioactive compounds such as cytokinin, and enzymes such as acid phosphatase, catalase, dehydrogenase, peroxidase, and polymerases. These enzymes help in digestion and metabolism. Research shows that cytokinins in coconut water have significant anti-ageing, anticarcinogenic, and anti-thrombotic effects. Indonesia is the world’s biggest producer of coconut. Where are the major areas of production, and what are some of their cooking methods? The largest coconut producers over the years are the provinces of Riau in Sumatra, North Sulawesi and East Java. In Sumatra, coconut milk (the liquid that comes from squeezing the grated meat) of a mature coconut is an important ingredient in many cuisines, including rendang, caramelized beef curry from West Sumatra; gulai belacan, large shrimp cooked in Riau spices; gulai ikan patin, curried catfish from Jambi; and pendap, mackerel with herbs and spices wrapped in banana leaf from Bengkulu.
Global demand for coconut products – particularly coconut water – has increased enormously. How can Indonesia take advantage of this? There are now more than 50 coconut products and its derivatives traded widely around the world. Among the food and drink products are coconut oil, coconut butter, coconut flour, coconut milk, coconut water, coconut flakes, coconut aminos, coconut vinegar, and coconut sugar.
C/U/G-18 Jan. 17
Indonesia is increasing, hence their productivity is declining. In addition, coconut crop land in Indonesia decreased by 10% in 2015 compared to the previous year. To take advantage of global demand for coconut products, the Government of Indonesia is implementing policy measures, including the rehabilitation of monoculture plantations, the revitalization of coconuts in various areas with high-yielding coconut varieties, and the expansion of coconut growing regions. This policy will be supported by the development of palm seedlings, partnerships between growers and the processing industry, coconut pest management, and the management of diseases or pests affecting coconut, and the provision of supporting facilities such as post-harvest equipment and low interest credit. What is your favorite way to enjoy coconut? In Gorontalo, the land of my ancestors on the island of Sulawesi, most of its traditional foods are coconut-based, either cooked with bongo dilangato (freshly grated coconut), hulango bongo (coconut milk) or yinulo (homemade coconut oil). Coconuts are useful for condiments, appetizers, snacks, main courses, desserts and drinks. My favorite way to enjoy coconut is binthe biluhuta, the most well-known Gorontalo dish. It is a traditional corn soup made from corn kernels, freshly grated coconut, shrimp or tuna, lemon basil leaves, shallots, salt and lime. It can be made into a vegetarian dish by omitting the shrimp or tuna, or tofu can be added as a protein source. Indonesian superfoods will be explored at Ubud Food Festival’s free Think, Talk, Taste series along with an array of food-related discussions, from sustainable seafood to tackling Bali’s waste, Indonesia’s coffee obsession to street food secrets. UFF runs from 12–14 May, with tickets on sale and the full program launched at the end of March. www. ubudfoodfestival.com.
The Indonesian coconut processing industry is facing difficulties keeping up with demand. One of the problems is an increase of fresh (unprocessed) coconuts exported from Indonesia. International buyers purchase coconuts directly from small holder plantations at high prices. It is harming the coconut processing industry as local manufacturers are unable to compete in acquiring raw materials. Coconut productivity is determined by the average age of the coconut tree. Data shows the number of old coconut trees in

Like the Moon and the Sun by Stanley Harsha As angry mobs screamed “Satan!” and pelted the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta with projectiles, American diplomat Stanley Harsha - author of Like the Moon and the Sun - smiled to himself and remarked that people were at least free to express themselves in contrast to the brutal suppression of free speech in the Suharto era. This was a time when steel plates were installed over the embassy’s windows, concertina wire barriers were uncoiled on the street outside and stern travel warnings were issued to U.S. citizens against travel to Indonesia. After terrorists attacked U.S. soil on September 11, 2001, and the U.S. government failed to gain support in Indonesia for its intervention in Afghanistan, Harsha and his colleagues at the embassy went into high gear. Most Indonesians did not believe that Muslims carried out the attack and that the wars against terrorism in the Middle East targeted Islam. The Americans launched an aggressive public diplomacy campaign, releasing a barrage of fact sheets explaining U.S. policy to the anti-American Indonesian print media. Indonesian animosity towards U.S. policy was at a boiling point. During 12 years of service in the country, Harsha was right in the thick of every diplomatic crisis and flashpoint including the Bali and JW Marriott bombings. He was a fast-acting player who responded quickly and decisively to counter lies about U.S. involvement and dispel misinformation circulated by terrorist networks. His participated in face-to-face interviews with radically anti-American magazines such as Sabili in which he defended U.S. policies. If only all American diplomats were as conscientious, worldly, suave and well informed as Harsha. God knows we need more of this ilk in our foreign service in the era of Trump who has promised to drastically cut foreign aid and the budget of the now phantom U.S. State Department by as much as 30%. Traveling back and forth between the two countries he loved the most - USA and Indonesia - Harsha worked in four different postings - Pacific Affairs Officer for Sumatra (1987-1990), Press Attaché in Jakarta (2001-2004), Deputy Political Counselor (2007-2009) and U.S. Consul for Sumatra (2009-2011). Few writers have had such enviable and unfettered access as Harsha who traveled widely throughout the archipelago meeting people in high government positions and the arts (Pramoedya Toer and Mochtar Lubis among them). He experienced first-hand Indonesia’s peaceful transition from dictatorship to the world’s third largest democracy and bore witness to some of the tumultuous events of the ‘80s, ‘90s and 2000s. The book goes a long way in helping to understand why Indonesians suspected and feared U.S. government policies, actions and at times unfortunate rhetoric. On the positive side, before reading this book I had never been aware of the extent to which USAID was involved in cultural programs and emergency relief work such as U.S. Navy helicopters flew lifesaving supplies to remote earthquake shattered villages of West Sumatra in 2009. This book is only the second memoir written by a U.S. diplomat who served in Indonesia. Indonesia: Crisis and Transformation, 1965-1968, by Marshall Green (1990) chronicled the ambassador’s experiences in the volatile period when the country was transitioning to the New Order. Unlike Green, who practiced what he called “low profile diplomacy,” Harsha became thoroughly embedded in his host country’s social, political, religious and cultural life. In 1987, Harsha exchanged marriage vows with a Javanese Muslim woman in a Javanese-style ceremony in front of 1500 guests. He converted to Islam the following year. Over time he became acculturated into his wife’s family and that of his two children. I personally found the comparisons that he makes between the two cultures’ customs, social conventions, extended family obligations, mourning and birthing practices, the celebration of religious holidays and the raising of
mixed marriage children the most readable parts of the book, paralleling many of my own experiences with my Javanese wife. Like the Moon and the Sun touches upon a broad range of subjects as seen through the eyes of a former diplomat who has had close connections to Indonesia for 30 years. Harsha first arrived in the country in 1986, returning for multiple diplomatic tours before retiring and writing this memoir. We get an insider’s perspective of what really happens behind the walls of the U.S. Embassy. He writes for both Indonesian and Western readers, offering congenial instruction on Indonesia’s rich multicultural society with the aim of promoting inter-cultural and inter-religious understanding and respect. The book’s title derives from an Indonesian proverb that describes the perfect match. His marriage to a refined Indonesian woman and his devotion to an intricate society is similar to the symbiosis between the moon and the sun, the incarnate yin-yang symbol of two contrasting forces and traditions which enhance each other. The concept also applies to the complicated relationship the writer has with his native land. Harsha asserts that Indonesian Islam is tolerant and peaceful - traits that are also shared by the United States – and is too big to fail. The inclusive, accommodating nature of Islam practiced here stands in contrast to the dogmatic Wahhabism of Saudi Arabia which he believes will never take hold in Indonesia. The history and issues in the practice of Islam in America are also discussed. It’s little known that American Muslims represent the most ethnically, racially and theologically diverse Islamic community in the world. He is sharply critical of religious prejudices in both nations: Islamophobia promulgated by the Christian right in the U.S. and hatred fomented by a small minority of hardline Muslims in Indonesia. He calls for human rights accountability for past killings and kidnappings of civilians by Indonesian security forces and for the torture and killing of terrorist suspects by U.S. security forces and the CIA. He critically analyzes the unsolved murders of human rights activists, suppression of the press, persecution of journalists and editors, the war against terrorism and all-pervading graft. In one of the most astute summaries I’ve ever read, the chapter “Report” discusses why corruption in Indonesia’s political system is so widespread, how it breeds perpetual social injustice, robs people of social welfare and why it’s almost impossible for voters to elect effective lawmakers.

Like the Moon and the Sun is compulsory reading for foreign service personnel of any nation assigned to Indonesia. Investors, NGOs, humanitarian organizations, employees of international corporations, academics and foreign students studying in Indonesia would also greatly benefit. Harsha is a passionate supporter of inter-faith dialog and champion of Indonesia’s press freedom. His sincerity, knowledge, lucid writing style and obvious affection for Indonesia qualify him as a uniquely qualified interpreter of Indonesian culture, politics and religion. Oz Bali, Part 2: Prominent Australians of Bali Few Australians were among Bali’s expatriate community in the pre-war years, but starting in the 1960s the island became a popular stopover for young Australians setting out on the long overland hippy trail between Australia and Europe.

Other creative and colorful Australian personalities such as Shane Sweeney and Van Wieringen soon made their home in Bali. The following are short profiles of Australians from different walks of life and expertise who live and work in Bali. Enthusiastic proponents of social programs and environmental projects that support the local community. *Alison Chester. Currently houses 92 underprivileged children from 9 months to 18 years of age. 100% funded by the kindness and generosity of friends and visitors. * C h r i s B r o w n : PA D I instructor who has since the early 1990s developed and operated Reef Seen Divers’ Resort (http://reefseenbali. com), a pioneering ecofriendly dive operation, conservation center and beachside resort. A committed marine conservationist, Chris started a number of community sustainability development projects in the Pemuteran area of NW Bali. *David Eagles: Figurative artist who moved to Bali in 1996. Latest project is Neylayan, a series of paintings portraying subsistence Javanese fishermen. Helped initiate the Tas Pasar (Market Bag) movement with the aim of reducing the scourge of plastic trash by introducing reusable bags. *Janet De Neefe: Founder of the Ubud Writers & Readers F e s t i v a l ( w w w. ubudwritersfestival.com) in 2006 and owner of Casa Luna and Indus Restaurants. Author of the memoir/ cookbook Fragrant Rice (2006) and Bali: The Food of My Island Home (2011).

WOMEN’S HEALTH Taking care of your outer beauty and looking your best is important but looking after your inner health is vital. It’s very important to once a year check out what’s going on inside your body. With the prevalence of breast cancer being the second highest cause of death in developed countries and first in developing countries among women, it’s vital to take steps to prevent succumbing to this fatal disease with preventative measures. If you’re over the age of forty having a yearly mammogram is important, especially if there is someone in your family history with breast cancer or you’re at higher risk if you’ve never given birth before age 35. Women with a family history of breast cancer may be wise to get tested before the age of forty. Then every year following. What is a mammogram? It’s a special x-ray machine that looks at your internal breasts, looking for any signs of potential problems. Early detection of cancer can save lives.
firmly squashing my breast. This was uncomfortable but only for a few seconds as I heard the buzzing sound of an x-ray being taken. Then she released the pressure as I exhaled. Relief! 25% done. This process was repeated on my right breast. She said I could put on my robe as she scurried out of the room to check the x-rays. Sitting in this silent cool room staring at the huge machines I contemplated the results. Stay positive. She returned a few minutes later to complete the second part of the test by turning the equipment on its side. Now my left side was against the machine as she proceeded to arrange my breast and body. Again the pressure followed by squashing. The whole procedure only took about half an hour then I could return to the locker to get dressed. While at the hospital I was going to have a Good Life Package for a basic health check-up. This includes a blood test which would check: cholesterol, hematology (red & white blood cells and platelet count), triglyceride, blood glucose, liver and kidney function and uric acid. I had to fast for 10 hours prior to the blood test.
What happens during a mammogram check-up? I went to Siloam Hospital on Sunset Road to get tested. After checking in with reception, you have a choice of a mammogram or an ultrasound scan. To be extra cautious it’s advised to have both tests. They have special packages available at good prices. The radiologist explained that ultra- sounds are advisable for women with very large breasts or those with implants. This procedure is pain-less, however very small nodules may not show up in the test. The mammogram may show tiny calcifications that aren’t seen on the ultra-sound. I chose to have the standard mammogram. Make sure you don’t put on any deodorant before going to the hospital because deodorants may appear as calcification spots. However, if you forget, the radiologist will instruct you to go to the toilet and wash after changing into a blue cotton robe. Everything above the waist is removed and stored in a locker. Next I was escorted into the consultation room and met with Dr. Ruth who questioned me regarding my medical history. Then she asked me to sit on the examining bed and open the robe to examine my breasts. Carefully palpating each breast searching for any lumps. She then asked me to lie down and continued the search. Not finding any lumps I could sit up and cover myself. I was free to return to the lounge to await the radiologist. The radiologist escorted me to the mammogram room, which is spacious and cool with two large and modern pieces of x-ray equipment. Having done several mammograms in the past in various hospitals around the world, I recognized what I call “the breast smasher”, obviously invented by a man. Removing my robe I was guided facing the machine and the technician carefully arranged my left breast onto the glass plate, arranged my arms and averted my face. When all was in place she pressed a button which lowered the above plate down onto my breast halfway. Some pressure, but not bad. Then stepping behind her protective screen she asked me to take a deep breath and hold as the upper plate pressed down
A nurse took me into a small room opposite the reception desk and asked me to sit down to take my blood. She expertly wrapped a tourniquet around my upper arm and sought out the best vein to insert a needle into. Just a tiny prick of her needle and two small vials of blood were taken. After the blood was taken I was called back into the doctor ’s consultation room to meet with Dr. Ruth again. On her desk was a large folder with the Siloam logo on top and Radiology printed in large letters. An ominous folder with life or death results inside. She looked me in the eye for a few seconds before opening the folder and pulled out the report. Then she explained the results.

If there’s any abnormality discovered the standard procedure is to refer the patient to the oncologist for further explanation and a biopsy. I returned to Siloam the following day for the blood test results rather than hanging around the hospital for two to three hours. A pathologist escorted me into a different consultation room across from the reception. She pulled out my report and explained the test results to me. Everything was normal except my cholesterol was a bit high. She asked about my diet and asked if I’d like to have medication or make an appointment with internal medicine. Usually they recommend an appointment with internal medicine for anything that is above or below normal for further to treat the condition. With Easter approaching, we report on a number of events held of the Easter break, like the Cricket Sixes starting their third decade. We cover the new Bali Tennis League using an online platform to arrange your games. TENNIS NEWS - Bali Tennis Liga A group of tennis enthusiasts in Bali have set up an online platform creating the Bali Tennis League or Liga. A non commercial venture, everyone can register and use this platform absolutely for free. As the organisers indicate “The beauty of Bali Tennis Liga platform is freedom & flexibility. As a player, you can play with anyone within your Level: anytime and anywhere. It’s free of charge, and there are no obligations even if you play only one match in a month. Our leagues are open to adults and kids, and we welcome players of all standards.” For more information all complete details and registration are here: www.bali.tennis. CRICKET NEWS - 21st Bali International Cricket Sixes Now in its 21th year, the Bali International Cricket Sixes was started by a group led by Terrance Fimstone (The Bali International Cricket Club – BICC) in Easter 1997 and aimed to promote cricket for enjoyment in Bali for all ages and types of cricketer. The BICC continued the organisation until 2009 under Ian Jasper. In 2010, management of these auspicious local Sixes was taken by The Udayana Cricket Club, based at Udayana University, the first all Indonesian managed, residential club in the Indonesia. This Tournament has developed a well deserved reputation for accepting any team whatever the standard in order to promote the game among local people. It is the only cricket tournament in Indonesia that accepts Indonesian teams with the aim of promoting the game with good expat sides as a stimulus to better play. The Bali International Cricket Sixes has played a pioneering role in beginning and spreading the great game of cricket to the Indonesian people. It is one of the few opportunities for young Indonesian players to play with and against expatriates. By supporting Bali Cricket, you can help them continue this very challenging but rewarding task. One of the great challenges in the development of Indonesian cricket is the sustainability of new players and thus the development of an Elite squad which is competitive internationally.

Ultimate Frisbee is a limited-contact team field sport played with a flying disc (frisbee). Points are scored by passing the disc to a teammate in the opposing end zone. Other basic rules imply that players must not take steps while holding the disc (maintain a
pivot), and interceptions and incomplete passes are turnovers. Rain, wind, or occasionally other adversities can make for a testing match; with rapid turnovers, heightening the pressure of play. A prominent feature of the modern game is the “lay out,” a horizontal dive to catch or block the disc. Last year the Nusantara Cup saw over a hundred participants from around Indonesia and SE Asia and Pacific, showing the popularity of this sport and the determination of the players. Say What? Question: My sister has been stuck in a dead end loop for years. The two of us are in our 30’s, and we each recently moved back in with our family for financial reasons. This will probably be for a number of months, and as a result, we’re stuck together and driving each other crazy. The whole family is worried about her. She thinks that she is worthless, and that everyone hates her; so she spends most of her time on the computer instead of going out, doing things and meeting people. Somehow this becomes living proof to her of how worthless she is. Every interaction with people for her becomes hugely magnified. If a stranger gives her an odd look, for example, she’ll analyze it for days and take it as proof that people despise her. This also makes her hard to live with as it’s hard to avoid hurting her feelings. I feel as if I’m always bending over backwards only to have her get upset anyway. We argue two or three times a week, and I end up feeling resentful. We also have several relatives to whom she pretty much won’t speak because they’ve all done something at some point that made her think they were being condescending. Is there anything we can do to convince her that she’s great, and nobody hates her? How should I handle arguments with her? What can I tell our relatives who wonder what they’ve ever done to her? I’d be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks! Dr. ZZ: It’s impossible to trick your sister into feeling good about herself or into being nice to others. You can’t control what other people do; you can only control yourself. It’s also not helping either of you for you to continue being the family mediator and her emotional punching bag. If she wants to turn everything into a conflict, the only thing you can do is remove yourself as much as possible, and let her handle things herself. Your room has a door. Use it. Invest in a good set of headphones. Get out of the house as much as possible. Take a second part-time job. Volunteer. Take long walks. Attend social events. Run every possible errand for your

parents. Spend as little time around her as possible. Things may get worse before they get better, but in a world where you can’t make other people act appropriately, you’re within your rights to take care of yourself by limiting your involvement with someone who is toxic and treats you poorly. All this may sound unduly harsh and, of course, this is your sister whom you love. While it is impossible to diagnose mental illnesses secondhand over the Internet, your sister sounds deeply unhappy. It is probably safe to say that something is going on here for which she would do well to see a mental health professional. She is acting mean and unpleasant because she hates herself, and she keeps doing hateful things to prove her theory that she is horrible and should hate herself. Keep in mind that you can’t make her get help, meet with a professional, or do anything to care for herself. You can offer suggestions, present possibilities, and try to make it as easy as possible for her to follow through. It may take several conversations and tries before she’ll even consider it. Question: I’ve been seeing this great guy for about 6 months. He’s sweet, smart, and ridiculously generous with his time and attention, and I like him a lot. All this makes me feel terrible about telling him to shut up about the angst he is feeling about his friend who’s soon moving back to her

home country. Unfortunately, she’s more than just a friend as he asked her out a while back, and she turned him down; they have nevertheless remained friends. When he and I first got together, he told me all about her in the interest of being upfront and honest. I suspect he still has some lingering feelings for her as he often acts resentful if she brings along a date who shares many of his interests. All this is being revved up now because she’s leaving, but I’m tired of being supportive and listening to him go on and on about how he is going to miss her, and how he feels as if her leaving is a bigger deal to him than to her. It grates on me to hear about his issues with her, especially since I used to date another man with a pre-existing attachment to another woman; that was a disaster. Is there a non-bitchy way to stop him from doing this and help him move on? Dr. ZZ: Your frustration is understandable though the situation will most likely improve with time -- after other woman leaves. Meanwhile, your boyfriend is grieving over what-might-have-been (a normal and natural human response), and it is challenging to have him (not the other woman) pushing for more connection. Your best strategy is to be compassionate and direct. Let him know that you appreciate his openness and honesty, and that the depths of his feelings is bringing up a lot of complicated emotions for you. Invite him to confide about this with someone else instead and to let your time together be about you. Just as he is free to ruminate in this way, you are free to request that he not use you as a sounding board because hearing so much about this is destabilizing. Let him know that you understand it is not his intention to upset you, and that you simply want to minimize discussions about this other person.

Local News Saudi King Begins 5-Day Visit to Bali On schedule at 5:45 pm on Saturday, March 4, 2017, the Boeing 747 used by the Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud landed at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport at the beginning of a 5-day holiday. The King and his entourage of 1,500 traveling on a total 6 aircraft were greeted by the musical strains of a Balinese orchestra and 50 pendit dancers - a traditional welcome in the Balinese dance repertoire. A total of 22 domestic flights and 17 international flights encountered delays in their arrival and departure schedules because of the VVIP arrival in Bali. A specially designed escalator flown into Bali from Saudi Arabia to assist the 81-year-old Monarch descend from his Private Jumbo Jet malfunctioned at the last moment necessitating the use of an invalid passenger lift during the disembarkation process. Joining the welcome were Bali’s Governor Made Mangku Pastika, local officials and community leaders in Bali. Accompanied by a sizeable police escort a fleet of limousines brought the Saudi King and his party from the airport to his suite at The St. Regis Resort Bali at Nusa Dua. Governor Of Bali, Indonesia’s Only Hindu Region, Refuses To Cover Statues For King Salman Of Arabia The King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, is holidaying in Indonesia with an entourage that is large enough for an invasion. The place he has chosen for his extravagant luxury trip is Indonesia’s most famous tourist region, Bali. Bali is also the only Hindu-majority region in the country and is known for the numerous statues of Hindu gods, goddesses and heroes. In fact, statues such as those of Lord Krishna and Arjuna made in the Southeast Asian style are not only one of the prime attractions for tourists but are also a symbol of the Hindu ancestry for locals who take pride in them. But statues of any kind are forbidden in Saudi Arabia, which follows the strictest form of Islam – Wahhabism. This is why when the Saudi king landed in Bogor, a city in the Indonesia’s main island of Java, whatever statues were along the way of his entourage were covered by sheets or obstructed by trees. Despite this the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, ruled out covering of statues on his island. “Bali is famous for being comfortable, safe, and tolerant, so we will leave it as is. (Sculptures) will not be covered,” he told the local Balinese daily ‘Tribun Bali’. [topyaps.com March 6, 2017]
No Injuries Reported as White Horse Bus Catches Fire in North Bali A White Horse Bus carrying 34 domestic passengers traveling on a journey from the Bali Bird Park to Bedugul caught on fire and burned on Friday, March 3, 2017. When smoke started coming from the bus on the Denpasar to Singaraja Road at Baturiti, passengers and crew quickly disembarked the while the fire was extinguished. There were no injuries related to the fire that saw 3 fire trucks respond to the scene. The fire that caused extensive damage to the bus is blamed on a short circuit in the vehicle’s electrical system. The passengers were transferred to a replacement vehicle to continue their journey. Province of Bali Wants to Take Control of Growing Pile of Garbage Overwhelming South Denpasar Beritabali.com reports that Bali’s battle with trash and garbage was the “hot topic” at a meeting held at the Bali Provincial House of Representatives on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. At the budgeting meeting with provincial lawmakers, Governor Made Mangku Pastika explained the complicated issues surrounding the operation of the TPA Suwung - Bali’s largest rubbish tip in South Denpasar, the sight and smell of which dominates wide areas of Bali’s south. Pastika told the meeting that it is proving difficult to find a private party capable or prepared to tackle the problem of garbage at Suwung. Because of this, Pastika is urging that the province be allowed to take charge of TPA Suwung with funding coming from fees to be derived from “tipping fees” and fund collected for cultural preservation. “We can ask UNESCO for a donation to protect culture and hygiene,” explained Pastika. Pastika described how past efforts to produce electrical power from the decomposing trash proved economically non-viable. For this reason, he said he is unable to find anyone prepared to invest in managing TPA Suwung. The Governor said that plans submitted to handle the trash deposited at TPA Suwung include an 80-meter tall processing tower, a building height not allowed by Provincial zoning rules. The pile of garbage at TPA Suwung may, in fact, soon exceed structural height limitations of 15 meters, with trash now piled over 12 meters above ground level. Reportedly, some 43 investors have looked at the TPA Suwung project, but none have come forward to undertake the management of Bali’s garbage problem. Pastika’s proposal that the Provincial Government be put in charge of TPA Suwung was widely applauded by legislators attending the meeting. [www.balidiscovery.com March 3, 2017]
Uber, Grab Locked in Bali Street Fight Bali, the popular Indonesian resort island, is the scene of an intensifying confrontation between ride-hailing companies and local tour businesses, including cab operators. Some areas in Bali have banned the use of ride-hailing apps offered by companies such as Uber Technologies of the U.S. and Grab of Singapore, as ordinary drivers’ entry into online hailing services has resulted in dog-eat-dog competition in the island’s transportation industry. An end to the tug of war is not in sight. The Seminyak area has banned the use of ride-hailing apps by its customary law. As Indonesian law permits them, the ban is not considered legally binding. But local hotels and restaurants rule out cars called via the Uber or Grab apps. Other areas, such as the popular seaside resort of Sanur, are adopting similar restrictions. Bali ‘Card Game’ Scam Costs Kiwi Family Thousands A Kiwi father on holiday with his family in Bali was kidnapped for more than four hours and forced to pay a card game which scammed him out of $2000. The victim, whose wife spoke to the Herald as he was too traumatised to talk, was alone on the streets of the resort island when a local man sat down on a bench beside him. The pair started chatting and the local man said his sister was moving to Auckland to be a nurse and asked the Kiwi to talk to her about what it’s like in New Zealand. “My husband just thought, being a really nice guy, that it was fine,” his wife said. He got into a car with the Balinese man to speak to the women. The doors got shut and he got locked in and then he was driven away,” the wife said. “They drove him into a property where they locked the gate. They took him inside and they sat [him] down, they wouldn’t let him leave. The house was really little. People seemed to come and go within the room.” The Kiwi “started to get quite fretful” because he had no idea what the strangers were capable of. “He tried to do what he was told because he was obviously quite scared by that stage,” his wife said. “He had no idea what was coming. He didn’t think he was going to get out of it alive. He thought it was going to be over. They didn’t say anything like that, but there was just too much going on.” Inside the house another Balinese man was playing cards with a woman. The local man forced the New Zealander to play a round before telling him he had to “up the stakes” by betting money. “They kept saying ‘Oh you’re winning, you’re winning. You’ll just have to keep playing for a little bit longer’.” When the tourist ran out of cash the scammers drove him to a shop and forced him to swipe his card and enter his pin, his wife said. “He was quite frightened then because there was someone at the door so he knew he couldn’t escape. “He just tried to do everything to get out of it at this stage because he was really terrified. He swiped his card and they just took out every last bit of money.” The money they took from his account along with the cash totalled more than NZD $2000, his wife said. After the four-and-a-half hour long ordeal the scammers finally put the man in a taxi and sent him back to his hotel. Before the car drove away they gave him a cellphone. “They said ‘We’ll be in touch’.” When the man arrived back at his hotel, he handed the phone into reception and told them and his family what had happened. They contacted a relative back home, who called the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta. The Embassy got the man to file a report with the local police and advised the family to return to New Zealand immediately, the wife said. They cut their holiday a week short, forking out $2000 to change their flights because their insurance refused to pay despite them having comprehensive cover. [New Zealand Herald March 5, 2017] Bali’s Ngurah Rai World’s 3rd-Best Airport Airport Councils International, the only worldwide trade representative of the world’s airports, considers Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport the world’s third-best airport in the category “airports with an annual passenger capacity of 15-25 million people in 2016”.
