4 The Frugal Balinist
PMA (Penanaman Modal Asing)
FOR SALE ✱ Indonesian flag etiquette. To show respect for Indonesia’s Independence Day (Hari Kemerdekaan) on August 17th, place flag in front of your house or apartment. Roving vendors sell small flags at red lights for only Rp. 5000-Rp. 7000 or buy at the pasar for Rp. 25,000 to Rp. 100,000 depending on the quality of the fabric (cotton is the most expensive).
✱ Money sense. Buy your early bird ticket to UWRF 2017, only available now until release of their program on 16 Aug . 17, to save 20% discount to attend 72 events over 4 days. *It’s wiser to spend money to save time than to spend time to save money. *Only lend money to someone who is willing to put up hefty collateral (jaminan pinjam uang) like motorbike, vehicle title (BPKB) or property deed (akta tanah); if they work for the government, ask for their SK PNS (employment certificate). *Cycling offers unlimited free parking and puts money in your pocket, not in the gas tank. *Asking prices for upscale 60-85 sqm condotel studio units in south Bali are Rp. 4 billion- Rp. 6 billion while midsize 30 to 50 sqm units run Rp. 1 billion-Rp. 4 billion; for cheaper places, head north. *Nadhi Supermarket Alat Tulis & Kantor, Jl. Mahendradatta Selatan 100 in Denpasar, is the largest and most complete office, school and stationary supplies outlet in Bali with wholesale prices, ample parking and open until 10 pm. *Landlords may give the impression that they’ll maintain your rental property but what they really want is to take your upfront payment (min. 12 months) and not hear from you again until your contract is up. *Hemat pangkal kaya (Thrift is the foundation of wealth). *Techie corner. Global Jukebox (https://theglobaljukebox.org) is a free, interactive web portal with recordings of more than 6,000 folk songs from around the world, including hundreds from Indonesia. *Girlsintechindonesia.com encourages Indonesian women to be more active in technology. *www.greatschools.org has hundreds of wonderful free printable worksheets in English for elementary school kids. *Free books to read in 25 categories at Watttpad. *Balaklapan is is not just for shopping online but also for selling cameras, clothing, bicycle parts, etc. - a cross between eBay and Etsy. *With 2,000 Mac repair guides, 2,000 smartphone repair guides and 1,000 PC repair guides, iFixit has you covered for just about any electronic repair. *HelpNona.com’s online platform supports and empowers women to end abusive relationships and develop a positive self-image. *Use https://en.savefrom.net to record and download You Tube videos. *Not to worry; the real tactile world of analog is here to stay. ✱ Foodies. Denpasar’s Pasar Terminal Barang on Jl. Cargo (near Terminal Ubung) is a wholesale market carrying a wide variety of fruits; cheapest prices can be had from 6 am to 6 pm but you have to buy a whole pickup full of naga fruit, pineapples, bananas or whatever is in season. *At Rp. 5000, nasi jinggo in banana leaves in the shape of a cone and consisting of cooked rice and pinches of noodles, shredded chicken, shredded coconut and sambal is the cheapest meal you can buy day or night in Bali. *A glut of Kintamani oranges has caused prices to plummet now to only Rp. 3,500-Rp. 4,000 kg. *If their color changes or kelelawar (bats) start eating your zirzak, bananas, papaya, durian, sawo or srikaya fruits, they’re ripe and ready for picking. ✱ Bali Cab app. There have been some pretty nasty discussions about the taxi mafia on the public Ubud Community’s FB page, but no malice is ever vented by local taxi drivers against using (or providing services) for the Bali Cab ride-sharing app (either Android and iOS versions), which provides fast, reliable rides in minutes day or night. Even though prices quoted are cheaper than local taxis, the app is supported by local taxi drivers and the banjars. No need to park or wait for a taxi or bus. Just tap to request a ride and it’s easy to pay with credit or cash. *Grab Car is also quick to arrive and cheaper than your usual Ubud taxi.
✱ New bulbs on the market. I have always used Clipsal dimmer switches for incandescent bulbs, but most LEDs cannot be used with dimmer switches. Philips recently released two and three brightness LED bulbs, which can be found on the 2nd floor at Depo Bangunan (and sometimes at Carrefour). These LED dimmers cycle through from the brightest setting down to the lowest setting by turning them on, off, on, off, etc. The new bulbs have two color options, cool white and warm white (yellowish). *The new 5 Watt Light + Combo Bulb, available at Carrefour, have a built in backup battery. They are found close to the central aisle, on the left side, right after the Philips products. It’s claimed that they have about 10 hours of battery time. They usually cost Rp120,000, but are sometimes on sale for as low as Rp50,000. Larger wattage ones are also available. Nice to have when the power cuts out and the bulbs also make wonderful gifts for Balinese friends.

✱ Household products. For Bali’s very best pillows, go to Informa’s HUGE 5000 sq. meter location at the Jl. Cokroaminoto-Ubung inersection. The largest and most complete furnishings retail outlet in Indonesia, Informa sells goose down and feather products in different grades. Lots of great stuff - office chairs, recliners, European-made kitchen goods like Scanpan, which are awesome, as well as other high-end brands. Owned by Kawan Lama, the same Group that owns Ace Hardware. They have very deep pockets, stock an incredible array of wares and usually have some pretty attractive promo prices. Open from 10 am-10 pm every day. The chenille and memory foam bath mats are bathroom luxury items of legend, come in many colors and are nicely pleasant underfoot. Don’t dry them in the direct sun, as it will degrade the plushness of the memory foam. If you treat them right, they’ll last and feel great for a very long time. *Cruise the bedding section at the Sunset Road Carrefour, which often has a hard time selling the highest grades of sheets, pillows and bantal guling. It’s pretty easy to get the best they sell marked down 70%. *Rockbottom 100% dacron bantal (pillows) and bantal guling (bolsters) are sold at Dapur Prima Monang Maning (2nd floor) in Denpasar for only Rp40,000/each.
✱ Protect your trees! The Balinese use fruit trees for food, construction, leaf mulch and ceremonial offerings. Tree branches are used for firewood and wood from the jackfruit trunk is used to build tables, chairs and garden pavilions (bale bengong). Indications that your precious fruit trees are under stress: thinning of the tree’s crown; loose roots and fungal growths on roots or trunks; dead or fallen branches; deep vertical cracks on main trunk; the presence of insects on or around the tree; sawdust on the tree from wood-boring insects; unusual deformations or deposits on limbs or bark; discolored leaves. Harmful bugs include belalang (grasshoppers) and black ants that attack orange, soursop, guava, mango, avocado, rambutan, durian, kedondong (plum) and banana trees. Insects don’t like the smell of bunga kemitir flowers planted around trees. Avocado trees can be protected from caterpillars by letting fire ants (semangah/ semut merah) nest in the tree. For banana trees, lay down ripe mengkudu fruit under them. If your coconut trees are ailing, they have either been struck by lightning or attacked by the rhinoceros beetle.

DRAGO-DRAMA FOR KIDS
LIVING TREASURES FESTIVAL Once again, Cudamani Festival gifted us with some of Bali’s most precious and beautiful music and dance pieces, performed by highly skilled masters of their tradition. This was the second year of this threeday festival, and if you missed it, mark late July 2018 in your diary NOW! Cudamani teachers and masters do not normally perform outside of traditional settings and international tours and festivals. They made a pledge some time ago to cherish and preserve Bali’s cultural heritage, and this three evening event – one for the Cudamani Performing Company, one to highlight the works of Bali’s “living masters” and one for the Cudamani children and youth troupes – demonstrate how well they are honouring that pledge. Keep your eyes open for other opportunities, especially their internationally acclaimed “Kebyar” repertoire. Kebyar means “Explosion” and it was truly an explosion of dynamic virtuosity, featuring some of the island’s most brilliant young performers. Find Cudamani on Facebook.
ISLANDS OF IMAGINATION
Ex-pat Mario Cossa helps people investigate and transform their own lives through psychodrama; based in Ubud, he disappears every now and then to honour other commitments. At the end of August, he’ll travel the US for annual high school programs with disadvantaged youth, returning via a series of psychodrama teacher training sessions in Asia. Mario uses live-action role-playing to help children explore many life issues – self-doubt, depression and malice, for example - through the metaphor of Encountering the Dragon. Children love this kind of creative activity, and he has three more Bali sessions this month - in the Drago-Drama workshop series, co-facilitated by Susan Allen at Yellow Coco Creative Nest.

30 Years Book Selling in Bali C/U/G-16 August 17
Many extraordinary adventures start right here in Ubud. I’ll wager that Taksu Gallery’s Borneo and Bali photography workshop in November will offer you new and mesmerising experiences every single day. David Metcalf’s wealth of experience along the back roads and villages helps him immerse visitors in the real Bali that has existed for thousands of years. And you can trust his knowledge of respectful customs and temple courtesies, as you capture images of Balinese culture, traditions and temples. So too in Central Kalimantan, where during the past six years David’s team has developed a strong relationship with the Dayak people - the original inhabitants of the area.
Contact Susan for dates and other info, mobile 0818-0563-0001 or email yellowcoco@ rocketmail.com. Yellow Coco is in Kengetan, five minutes from Nyuh Kuning. Happy Merdeka Day in Bali Celebrate the foundation of Indonesia as an independent nation with Independence Day celebrations this year at Finns Bali! Merdeka Day, as it is known across the the country is a nationwide holiday observed annually on August 17th to recognise the beginning of the country’s emancipation from Dutch colonial rule in 1945. Despite The Netherlands not officially recognising Indonesia’s independence until 2005, this year the nation will commemorate its 72nd anniversary of freedom from Dutch rule with parades, gatherings and celebrations across the country and patriots wearing their red and white with pride! Whether you’re an Indonesian National, a short term visitor or

The house features four bedrooms, two shared bathrooms, a living room and a communal kitchen with running water and electricity. To make the house feel more like home, the Bali Dynasty Resort also donated many of the fittings and furnishings, including beds, TV, fridges and more. Located in Renon, the house is within close proximity to the Sanglah Hospital, the largest and most comprehensive hospital facility in Bali. Transfer to and from hospital is easily organised at no cost via Bali Dynasty Resort’s Solemen charity car which operates every day. In July 2017, Bali Dynasty Resort also funded Solemen’s project to build toilets and shower blocks for the impoverished community of 26 people in Gerokgak, North Bali, who previously had to use the beach and sea for their toilet. The hotel’s charity commitment with Solemen began in 2016 under the tagline “HELP FRIENDS FOR LIFE”. To date, the Resort has committed to assist five SoleBuddies (people under Solemen’s care) with their ongoing, long term care and education, while at the same time helping many individuals by way of one off donations such as wheelchairs, prosthetic legs and medical treatments, resulting in a positive impact on these individuals’ lives. Bali Dynasty Resort is one of Solemen’s great partner hotels whose guests raise money through their participation in the hotel’s CSR programs for Solemen. Funds for the charity are generated via the numerous fundraising efforts throughout the hotel, such as everyday poolside games, donation boxes around the resort, the voluntary $2 donation when checking

Fabulous Frangipani ‘Dear Garden Doctor, I have a lawn and a narrow garden bed which is very bare except for the frangipani tree. I was thinking of filling in the bare space with a few more as they are stunning plants and seem low maintenance. I see them growing happily everywhere around and mine has been doing very well despite the lack of care. My neighbour says that if I cut the branch I can grow a new tree. I really have no idea. I am so excited about the prospect of growing more frangipani and filling out my yard because it flowers brilliantly. Is it really that simple as cutting a branch and putting it into the ground? Is there anything else important that I need to do to make this a success? Thanks so much for any tips in relation to this. Yours Sincerely, Lorraine.
revered status within many cultures in addition to the high esteem in which it is held within the landscape and garden community.
Most plants can be reproduced from a cutting with varying degrees of success. The good news is that the frangipani is right up there as one of the easiest to do. People are often amazed at the ease with which you can grow new plants from cuttings once they have done it, and for me it is one of the true joys of gardening!
Having its origins in central America, the frangipani is thought to have been esteemed by the Mayans, evidenced by the discovery of glyphs and tablets that display flowers believed to be plumerias. Sometimes it goes by the common name ‘the temple flower’ for obvious reasons, often planted around temples and burial grounds where it’s fragrant perfume fills the air. It is a popular ceremonial plant in Asia, the Pacific Islands and Central America from where it originates. Frangipani can be seen all over Bali, even lining the dusty alleyways of Kuta where the local stall holders offer an abundance of it painted on canvas!
But before we get into the details of how to do it, let’s get to know a little more about the history and origins of the fabulous frangipani! Origins and History Frangipani are originally native to Central America. They are also commonly referred to as Plumeria, which is their botanical name, and the two terms are used interchangeably. Plumeria was named by Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) in honour of Charles Plumier (1646-1704), the French botanist who worked extensively throughout the Caribbean. Linnaeus was a Swedish botanist, zoologist and physician, considered to be the father of modern taxonomy, and is responsible for the development of the plant classification system that still endures today. From these associations with both Plumier and Linnaeus I have deduced that the name Plumeria has its roots in ‘botanical royalty’. Very fitting considering its
On the other hand, the common name frangipani is not so royal, said to derive from the French word ‘frangipanier’ or coagulated milk, referencing the milky sap of the plant, which by the way you should avoid getting on your skin where it could cause a nasty irritation. That reminds me, on the topic of frangipani and skin irritation, apparently these days they are a very popular tattoo, right up there with the rose as the flower tattoo of choice amongst the ink master aficionados. If you ask me, ink on skin has become so common and unoriginal these days that having no tattoo is the new tattoo! But I can’t really protest to people inking flowers and plants, being a garden enthusiast myself! Anyway, that’s a rant for another day…. I digress.
Cuttings: How to do it Now let’s get down to the serious business of taking cuttings. The uninitiated, whether old or young, will find it amazing that you can grow another plant simply by cutting a branch and sticking it in the ground. It’s can be an interesting scientific experiment for both adults and kids, especially considering that most adults are just big kids anyway! It really is as simple as cutting a branch and sticking it in the ground. If you have a healthy disease-free plant, taking a cutting is a very good way to replicate it. You can also bolster the variety of scents and colours in your garden by swapping cuttings with your friends and neighbours who may be growing different varieties. Take a cutting from a branch 30-50 cm length. Remove excess leaves other than a few sets close to the tip. You can cut the branch if you like but it is just as easy to simply break it off with your hand. Many gardeners profess that frangipani cuttings will grow with a higher success rate if left out for a few weeks to allow the wound or cut to heal over and dry. I have found just as much success by planting it straight into the ground. It is a very hardy plant, as tough as the succulents in terms of its hardiness. Frangipani off cuts that have been trimmed and left in a heap can
be salvaged weeks even months later to be replanted and regrown, if you don’t believe me then try it! With your new cutting, plant it into a pot or direct into the ground, the main requirement being consistent moisture with adequate drainage. Frangipani are drought tolerant once established, though new cuttings will require regular watering and care until new root growth develops. This means watering every few days, allowing the soil to dry out between watering. Even if your new cutting loses its remaining leaves, keep caring for it as it will most likely come back. When the first new leaves appear, you will know that your plant has taken root and the entire process has been a success. Most disease problems with frangipani, as with most other plants occur in conditions of poor drainage or high humidity. Err on the side of less water rather than too much, frangipani don’t like to have wet feet. They will do quite well in sandy soils that may otherwise be unsuitable for growing many other types of flowering plants. They are tough and most will live to be a huge tree with no care. The only thing that bothers them is high humidity, which can cause the proliferation of an unsightly fungus known as ‘frangipani rust’ which covers the undersides of the leaves with a yellow/orange toned pustules, hence the name ‘rust’. It spreads from tree to tree either through leaf or soil contact and the spores also hitch a ride and travel on the breeze, meaning it can be almost impossible to avoid the ‘frangipani rust’ in places like Bali where frangipani trees can quite literally be seen growing everywhere. The fungus can cause the tree to drop its leaves and look rather sick. Thankfully trees that are afflicted usually recover once the wet season has passed and drier atmospheric conditions return. Once you have mastered the art of growing plumeria from cutting you will easily be able to fill your garden with all types of fragrances and colours, and I have no doubt that you will succeed. Who ever knew that gardening with coagulated milk could be so fun!

Directions for the Escalivada: Leaving the blackened skin on, cut the bell peppers and onion in half. Leave the eggplants and tomatoes whole. Heat the oven broiler and put the oven rack up high, being careful not have it so high that the veggies will touch the flame. Smear an oven proof pan with olive oil and scatter the veggies over the oil along with the garlic halves. Slide the pan into the oven and allow the veggies to brown and darken further. From time to time turn the veggies. Turn the broiler off and set the oven to 375 degrees F. Move the rack to the middle of the oven and bake the veggies until they are very soft about 20 minutes checking from time to time that they aren’t burning. The tomatoes and red onion will be another 40 to 50 minutes to give them a deep flavor. When all are cooked remove the veggies from the oven and let them cool until you can handle them. Scrape the blackened skins from the peppers, onion and eggplants. Slip the skin off the tomatoes. Remove the seeds from the peppers and tomatoes. Cut all the veggies into fat slivers. Put all of these into a bowl along with the roasted garlic halves and add the dressing. Toss gently, add the chopped parsley and check for salt and pepper. Let this marinate for a good hour or longer. Enjoy the Escalivada at room temperature or slightly warm. Toast thick slices of bread to serve with individual pots of Escalivada. Each diner layers the roasted veggies onto the bread. You can also smear the toast with roasted garlic, or raw garlic if you’re brave. ¡Buen provecho! - that’s Spanish for enjoy your meal

At the same time, Bali needs to move in tune with the changing global tourism market. A properly functioning cruise ship terminal fits that matrix and, if it’s built as an extension to the existing commercial port and does not overly intrude on the rest of the environment. It might make the road traffic even worse, but nobody really seems to care about that. A meeting on Aug. 1 set a September start date for development of the cruise ship terminal and projected completion by the end of next year. That timeframe’s tight, like most here. Never mind. No one seems to care about things like that either. It will be managed and operated by the stateowned port management company PT. Pelindo III. There are also plans to develop Celukan Bawang in North Bali for the cruise trade, with work scheduled to commence in December and be complete by March next year. We must hope that the cement dries in time.
Essential Paper President Joko Widodo, who was in Bali recently, said during his visit that one of the chief issues on his to-do-list, was the distribution of land certificates to the people of Bali. He handed out 5903 land certificates relating to title holdings in all Bali’s eight regencies and in Denpasar. He said 200,000 land certificates would be supplied in Bali this year and that all land on the island would have certificates by 2019. This should go some way towards stopping the perennial problem of competing claims to ownership and might even – well, we can hope – help self-regulate asking prices. What it will certainly do is help Balinese families create real assets with property market benefits.
Attention Please Robert Epstone, the barefoot British charity entrepreneur who puts both his soles and his soul into his pet project, Sole Men, provided us all with a lesson of another sort the other day. He posted on Facebook that he was attending the birthday party of another charitable Brit in the Sole Men ranks, nurse Sarah Chapman, after being injured in a machete attack he tried to prevent on an elderly woman. There was a photo of Epstone with a nasty pair of machete slices on his upper left arm. It was clearly a spoof, and the “wounds” were prosthetics, but you only saw that if you read on before making a comment. That’s the danger in the social media these days. Almost everyone seems to be called Peter and they’re forever shouting “wolf” before checking whether what they think they’ve seen is in fact the neighbour’s poodle. Facebook and other platforms are peppered with people who like to fulminate about all the falsehoods they see, and then themselves fail to check the facts before putting finger to cursor, today’s instant and much less sentient equivalent of pen to paper. Ignorance is catching. We should all remember that too. Sole Men does some great work and Epstone is a great promoter. Their work with the disadvantaged in Bali is a credit to them. Their website is always worth a look-in.
New Look Speaking of websites, the Intercontinental Bali Resort at Jimbaran has a new one. It offers virtual tours of the resort and its facilities – without which these days the competitive tourist dollar may well migrate elsewhere, after all – and the other interactive and phone-friendly bells and whistles that potential guests expect. Its director of public relations and marketing, Dewi Karmawan, must be feeling pretty pleased with the launch of the website, which went live on Jul. 21.
As more and more Chinese change the face of Bali tourism, so too are their travel itinerary preferences changing. They still travel in groups – though independent and “couple travel” is gaining ground with them, in tune with global travel norms – but anecdotal evidence indicates the groups are getting smaller. They’ll need smaller buses, then, which should help Ubud and other places whose streets are not designed for large vehicles. The focus still seems to be on shopping. Why Chinese should want to visit Bali to buy things that have probably been made in China is an interesting question. But they are widening their areas of interest. Someone told us the other day they’d seen a (manageably small) party of Chinese emporium prospectors in Jl. Imam Bonjol in Denpasar, some distance from the Kuta shopping horror.

There are some curiosities there, perhaps. Maybe they were looking for bathroom tiles or were going to ooh and ah in Mandarin or Cantonese at those curious sit-upon western toilets.
Don’t Dance The Ubud Jazz Festival, held on Aug. 11-12 at the Arma Museum, presented some fine music and associated other entertainment, but it had one downside effect on an element of traditional Balinese culture that people flock to Ubud to see, or should.

Radio Daze Ines Wynn is always worth reading in the Bali Advertiser, and her piece on radio stations in the last edition was especially informative. There’s a lot out there on the wavelengths – chiefly FM of course, since that’s all that young people can listen to on their smart phones. Wynn related a classic instance of cause and effect. There’s almost no English-language broadcasting here to service the tourist market. The radio stations say they don’t broadcast in English because no English speakers listen to them. But perhaps if they did offer something in the global lingua franca, English speakers would listen, and advertisers would have another money pit to mine.

Shaken (But Not Yet) Forgive us being a tad churlish. You don’t really have to be a professor at Brigham Young University in the U.S. to safely predict that a truly massive earthquake will shatter Bali and other parts of the archipelago at some undetermined point in the future. The Indo-Australasian plate is slipping under the Eurasian plate and has been for eons, with calamitous effect; it will continue to do so whether observed by humans or not. The risk is not confined to earthquakes, either. Who could forget the 1815 Mt. Tambora eruption on Sumbawa, which killed thousands locally and many others by its effects, including famine and the 1816 “year of no summer” in the northern hemisphere brought about by its volcanic debris in the atmosphere. Disaster planning, 21st century style, is somewhat more advanced. It pays to be prepared, though it’s difficult to prepare fully for cataclysm. American research geologist Ron Harris told a seminar on disaster mitigation held in Jakarta recently studies indicated events such as the massive Aceh quake in 2004, which generated the worst tsunamis in the historical record, were possible in Java, Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa, and other parts of the eastern archipelago.
The Intercontinental has always been on The Diary’s favourites list, for its location and range of facilities, especially its dining options and the sunset bar.
A Richter 9 quake immediately offshore could create tsunamis of up to 20 metres, which could reach the shore in as little as 20 minutes. Nusa Dua and Denpasar were at risk in such a scenario, he said. It’s not a happy thought, especially as high ground is not readily accessible within that timeframe for mass evacuations. Still, we might get hit by an asteroid first, which would render the question academic.
Changing Tune
Happy Birthday!
The east is still determinedly red, for Bali’s tourism sector, with continuing high growth in the number of Mainland Chinese who holiday here. It is a change in the tourism demographic that seems firmly fixed. There are still a lot of Australians about, but they’re no longer the only sausage in the bun.
It’s Independence Day tomorrow (Aug. 17). Indonesia celebrates 72 years of nationhood this year. Hector writes a blog at 8degreesoflatitude.com Copyright © 2017 Bali Advertiser You can read all past articles of Hector’s Diary at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

But people who choose to cruise the archipelago are not necessarily looking for the sort of artificial and determinedly kitsch resorts that dot other parts of the globe. Some may see the proposed Benoa Bay Port Excrescence, a real estate project by tycoon Tomy Winata, as a complementary exercise, but this is not necessarily so. There’s room for some remedial thinking on that score, particularly as the communities around the bay don’t like the idea at all and won’t shut up about it. Neither should they.
HECTOR’S

The cruise market is big and likely to grow further, so it makes sense for Bali to have the capacity to effectively service this element of the tourism trade. The port of Benoa is the logical place to site the infrastructure required, and it seems that moves to do this are under way.

Canggu Fun Run (20 August) C/BT/G-15 March 17
Fun runs are a great way of bringing people together and raising money for good causes. This run will take place over 5 km and its purpose is to showcase Canggu and promote this area of Bali. For newcomers to Bali, Canggu used to be a sleepy little suburb with the odd restaurant, bar and little traffic. It was an area you would pass through to visit Tanah Lot. Now though, the urban sprawl has spread out covering Canggu. Despite this, Canggu has managed to preserve its rice fields, beaches, temples and heritage and remains a beautiful part of Bali. ‘Heritage’ is the chosen theme for this event and runners are encouraged to add a touch of ‘traditional’ or ‘heritage’. The run will showcase Canggu and its highlights. Zumba will also be part of the fun and there are prizes organized for winners of the run, best zumba dancer and other categories. An auction will also be held to help raise much needed funds for Yayasan Semara Putra, an orphanage located in Klung Kung. All proceeds from this event will be donated to Yayasan Semara Putra. As well as fun it is great to see the generosity of the community and thoughts for those in need. You can purchase your tickets at Frii Bali Echo Beach, The Haven Suites Bali Berawa, The Haven Bali, Seminyak or Fontana Hotel. Participants will receive a t-shirt to wear on the run. These community events are worth attending and if you do not feel like running then come along and show your support. For Love of Chocolate...
How not to debase the Food of the Gods
AL-ANON FAMILY & FRIENDS GROUPS
It is a rare child who does not love chocolate and most of us carry that love affair into adulthood to some degree. Our tastes may become more refined as we age, but the love affair continues. As a child we’re really talking about milk chocolate. The dark stuff comes later. As a child too, there’s usually some female figure in our lives who baked the most unbelievably moist rich creamy chocolate cake. Cocoa as a comfort bedtime drink is another potent childhood memory. As a kid growing up in England in the 1950s it was the great Quaker chocolate houses that we remember. The names live on, but they’re all owned now by Kraft in debased form; Cadbury’s, Fry’s, and Roundtree with honourble mention to Terry’s of York and Mackintosh, of Quality Street assorted fame. Dominating it all then and now, was the Cadbury’s milk chocolate bar which was sold throughout the English-speaking world, with the exception of the USA. The sixpenny Cadbury chocolate milk bar was the basic gold standard against everything else, up-market or down, was measured. Here the Quaker values of honesty in business ensured that you got the genuine article at a fair price. We love what we grow up with, I know, but on tasting a Hershey bar for the first time I couldn’t believe that the stuff was chocolate. Bit like the American kid I heard in London back in the 1960’s whose parents had made the mistake of going into a Wimpy Bar. “Mom, this is isn’t a hamburger!” he exploded in justified outrage. The next stop in my own love of chocolate was Suchard Milka from Switzerland. Apart from the chocolate there was something else I liked I could’t place. I now identify this as condensed milk, used in place of powdered milk. It was a sickeningly sweet whitish treacle sold in cans. It was essentially inedible, but pierce the can so it didn’t explode and boil it for 3 hours and it alchemised into a light brown paste which was supremely delicious. Too much sugar spoils the tast of food but sometimes alchemy does take place and you get ... Halva! It was like that. My chocolate odyssey reached its peak when I discovered Prestat, a chocolatier in South Moulton S t r e e t , M a y f a i r, founded by Frenchman Antoine Dufour, who encouraged by one of Edward VII’s French mistresses, set up shop in 1902 and which produces the best truffles in the world. Not only did they taste magnificent but the packaging was a statement of such elegance that all my giftgiving to any woman I wished to thank or impress, was taken care of for the next two decades. I read the other day that The Economist magazine ran a survey to see who were the top ten chocolatiers in the world. Prestat was number three with the French Maison du Chocolat first and Marcolini of Belgium second.
Authentic is the Real Luxury We live in an interesting world. In many ways it seems to be going to hell in a basket and yet the reality is things have never been better. What we eat for example. For 80 years Big Food has been on a roll processing and denaturing cheap edible substances whose generic name ends up being its only assocation with nutrition and by shoving synthetic additives, emulsifiers, preservatives ,artificial flavourings, colorings, laced with lashings of salt and refined sugar, all wrapped up in lies - and then marketing the bejasus out of it. The net effect of all this is that foods which are real and authentic cease to be an affordable staple but become a luxury item. That is, until sufficient numbers of us who spot the scam reach critical mass and are prepared to do something about it. That seems about where we are just coming to now. Call it the Great Artisanal Restoration. If you can’t get a job in a factory because they don’t exist in your locality any more, are not cut out to be a banker, financial spiv or lawyer - why not go back to righteous endeavour making or growing something that is real and authentic for which there is a growing demand? Chocolate is a perfect example for this; coming from a bean found in South America possessing magical healing and sexual properties, whose origins are lost in the mists of Tolmec and Mayan legend. Brought back to Spain by Columbus it became the favourite court tipple and
quickly spread throughout the courts of Europe. By the 17thC it descended from these dizzy heights to the clubs and coffee houses of London and Europe’s other great cities. Soon the cocoa bean itself had spread beyond South America and was being grown in plantations by slaving masses throughout West Africa and the East Indies. By the 1828 Dutchman Conrad Van Houten designed a hydraulic press to extractr cocoa butter and in 1847 in Bristol the Quaker Joseph Fry had produced the fi rst chocolate bar. The rest is history.
Ingredients: the Good, the Bad & the Ugly In their guide to buyers eBay warns that manufacturers include many different kinds of ingredients in chocolate, some good, and some bad. “All chocolate bars will contain cocoa and sugar, the quantity depending on whether it is sweet, dark or bitter chocolate”, they say.

Cocoa appears under a variety of names. Chocolate liqueur simply means cacao beans ground into a paste, essentially the same as cocoa. Sometimes listed as cocoa powder and cocoa butter. The ingredient to avoid is ‘Dutch process cocoa’. Cheap low-quality cacao beans have a sour taste that is neutralized by ‘dutching’, i.e. mixing cocoa powder with alkali. While there are no alternatives to cocoa, there may be a number of alternatives to sugar. Organic chocolate bars use brown sugar or evaporated cane juice, imparting a smoky, molasseslike flavor. If you are trying to reduce sugar in your chocolate, buy ultra-dark chocolate with cocoa content above 70%. At that percentage, a 2 ounce bar contains less than 17 grams of sugar. Most good chocolate includes vanilla which enhances the chocolate flavour. Natural vanilla has a cheap artificial substitute however, vanillin (4-hydroxy3-methoxybenzaldehyde), which gives a chemical taste to chocolate. The final ingredient you find in chocolate is lecithin or soy lecithin, an emulsifier. This keeps the cocoa butter from separating from the cocoa solids and sugar in chocolate. It is a common ingredient and many fine chocolates include it with no problems.
C/He/G-15 Feb. 17
Milk chocolate uses milk powder for two reasons. It not only gives chocolate the creamy texture which is popular, but significantly also acts as a filler, replacing more expensive cocoa butter to make the more go farther. With chocolate and truffles, the ingredients to avoid are hydrogenated vegetable oils and tropical oils (like coconut oil). Traditional truffles are made with unsalted butter and always taste better than those made with hardened vegetable oils. Chocolates with fruit fillings have a shorter shelf life and are loaded with preservatives. You can’t avoid preservatives unless you go to a live chocolatier whom you know makes their chocolates fresh every day. Plain chocolate bars need no preservatives, with a long shelf life of over a year. The only reason to have preservatives in chocolate can only be to extend its shelf life in the store, for as we know chocolate does not last long in the home. Armed with this information it is an interesting exercise venturing out into the market place to compare prices and small print on the European and US labels with the local artisanal offerings and the local supermarket brands. I call it “Spot the Weasel”.

Rediscovering Our Authenticity Most of us are seeking to be fulfilled in our lives. Being a child of the 60’s, life was very different growing up in the USA. I remember the simple pleasures of riding my friend’s horse or ice skating on our pond in winter. In the Spring, the daisies bloomed creating a beautiful golden lawn that I begged my father not to cut with the lawn mower. I would spend hours picking them to make myself a crown or a lovely necklace for my dolls and my mom. Life was simple but good. There were no video games or even computers then. We had a black and white TV for many years before we were able to afford a fancy color TV. When I look back at my childhood it feels like a dream — something that is so far away that the experiences I had were almost unreal. But there is a richness there which gave me a strong foundation for who I’ve become today. I learned how to be satisfied with the simple pleasures of life; how to self soothe and not depend on technology or others to entertain me. I had a direct relationship with the natural world which continually replenished and nurtured my soul. My deep connection to my environment gave me joy, ease and glory, C/He/G-18 Jan. 17
because I didn’t require anything else. I just enjoyed being. Fast forward to 2017, 45 years later. The world is a completely different place with a massive population explosion and incredible technology that gives people access to anyone or anything in the world. Gone are the days of researching the news on microfiche strips or in card catalogues. The art of letter writing is almost obsolete as it has been replaced with the convenience of what’s app, messenger or snap chat. Messages are short snippets and seldom contain real depth. Our world has become focused on immediate accessibility and gratification. Children seldom go outside to play with each other, because mobile phone games and PS4’s are vastly more interesting than people. Consequently, more children than ever before in history have ADHD and other behavioral issues. I don’t often reminisce about the good old days, but as I witness these dramatic changes in the world I wonder if this is really progress? Global warming is rapidly taking hold, our

food is being poisoned by greedy corporations like Monsanto and most people in the western world are more dissatisfied, overworked, stressed and anxious. Almost every day I see clients who are feeling these emotions; they have lost their way and don’t know how to get back to their authentic selves. Ultimately this is what we all desire on a deeper level. We all deserve to have fulfilling lives that give us the capacity and space so we can connect with ourselves and others in deep and meaningful ways. How have we gotten so far away from living soulful lives? There’s an interesting phenomena occurring worldwide in which many people who have grown weary of the rat race are choosing to leave their normal lives behind and live in conscious communities that are scattered throughout the world. These communities are built on principles that are not new to us — they have just been forgotten or pushed aside in favor of the new world order.

The Solemen Team A League of Humanitarians By Ines Wynn In 2009 British entrepreneur and philanthropist Robert Epstone retired to Bali with wife Shelley after a fast paced career in the fashion and music business in London and latterly Shanghai. After settling down in their very own corner of paradise in Seminyak and sampling the various delights of retired life in Bali, Robert grew a bit itchy and bored and started looking for ‘something else to do beside lounging, vegging and loafing’. Due to his lifelong work with philanthropic organizations in Great Britain, ain Romania and the former Yugoslavia, he naturally gravitated towards the many charitable opportunities available in Bali. He joined Rotary Seminyak and was given a project to build twenty wells with accompanying fruit and vegetable gardens on the island of Sumba providing water and food to over two thousand villagers. Robert, do tell, is this how it all began? This project and a life-defining encounter with a British nurse named Sarah Chapman soon made me aware that there was a far less glamourous side to life in paradise. I saw firsthand that life can be a raw deal for the many disadvantaged people I encountered here. I wanted to help them and came up with a creative and quirky way to raise funds for the underprivileged by walking barefoot until the Solemen charity -which I founded with a few friends - could raise 1 million dollars. We started our ‘Barefoot Walks around Bali’ campaign as a means to draw awareness to the plight of the disadvantaged and do some fundraising for their benefit. Naturally we invited people to walk with us. This became a well-known and well-attended event. How many walks did you actually accomplish? We did 2 long walks in Bali and various shorter walks. Our first barefoot walk in July 2011 was 535 kilometers long and took 29 days. Our circuit started on Kuta beach, winding through Tabanan to Gilimanuk, along the north coast to Singaraja; from there we walked to Batur and back down through Bangli and Amlapura; across to Ubud, Renon and Benoa, ending at Uluwatu. Admittedly, this first attempt was grueling since none of us had serious trekking experience and don’t forget, we walked barefoot all the way, on all manner of inhospitable surfaces and in uncooperative weather. The physical demands extracted their toll in blisters, bleeding and infected feet, sore hamstrings and chronic fatigue. Hot pavement, gravelly or rocky surfaces were very challenging to walk on. We faced close encounters with cars and motorcycles and got grazed a few times by inattentive motorists. We walked in rain and scorching sun, in puddles and deep water not knowing what lurked at the bottom. In the end our feet got very calloused and provided a modicum of protection, although it still remained a painful, physically challenging and exhausting adventure. Obviously it did not discourage you from continuing. On the contrary, the first walk was an enlightening experience in many ways and provided the impetus to stick with our efforts. Underway we visited orphanages, schools and villages where we sponsored medical checkups performed by a doctor and two nurses from the Bali Kids foundation, one of our first partners and beneficiaries of the Solemen Foundation. These medical checkups were a standard feature of all the Bali walks, along with educational sessions about the dangers of drug addiction, AIDS, child safety and environmental awareness. The health checks were a serious eye opener revealing that many kids were suffering from a variety of ailments like infected ears, scabies and other skin diseases, under nutrition, etc. So where did you go from there? Around the time of the first walk I met Sarah Chapman, who had retired from a professional nursing career of 28 years in England. Sarah was spending three days a week riding on the back of a motorbike to care for a little abused and malnourished child called Ani who was only 6 kilos at 8 years old in a remote area of Karangasem. We clicked immediately and formed a roving, fast acting Outreach Team which gradually expanded to include volunteer doctors, nurses, therapists and social workers. This team is now on the road daily to the remote areas of Bali to care for people with untreated diseases, disabilities, extreme poverty and destitution. We respond to referrals and find hidden poverty and untreated m e d i c a l c o n d i t i o n s rampant in all areas of ramp Bali, among children and We adults alike. encounter severe malnutrition, mentally ill ma patients who are locked pat up or chained like animals, people with an far advanced illnesses, with absolutely no w access to medical ac care or who are living ca
in acute poverty. Because of these experiences Yayasan Solemen has found its true direction: that of helping the hidden So disadvantaged in Bali. Our focus is on searching out those who dis are ar not helped by the existing network of charitable organisations and an government programmes. Our Outreach Team brings hope and an healing to the many people we encounter, often in difficult to reach areas or where access to health care is poor or nonexistent. Our fundraising efforts all are geared towards providing ex the th funds to help pay for medical assessments, treatments and interventions. int How Ho is Yayasan Solemen organised? We W actually have a fantastic core of dedicated professionals and an volunteers. Our Outreach Team, superbly managed by Sarah, is backed up by a solid administration team and a coterie Sa of volunteer staffers, various fundraising and PR services. Sarah has become the kingpin of the Outreach Team and her Sa and Solemen’s small but dedicated and hardworking team’s efforts never flag to help those in need. Considering we have currently over 980 people under our care, Sarah and the team are overwhelmed. Your caseload is huge.. Indeed. We call them ‘Solebuddies’ and their number is increasing every month. Last year it increased by 80%. The more Yayasan Solemen is known, the more referrals we get. We never turn down anyone needing help, even though we are severely stretched, both in professional resources and budgetwise. Over 75% of our monthly budget goes towards providing medical care and essential living support. We operate on a shoestring budget yet we book wonderful results because we focus on providing help where it is most needed and will have the most impact. We actually perform miracles of some sort as we have become experts in stretching the proverbial dollar. But we can only stretch it so far and since we want to do so much more, we spend a great deal of our time trying to raise funds to take on more cases. What interesting situations have you come across? Quite a few, actually. Some are horror stories but most have a good ending. One of our most spectacular successes has been the rehabilitation of 2 families with 7 severely disabled children between them. We found a total of 29 people living with just one toilet in a small dilapidated house in Denpasar in unhygienic and below-standard living conditions. The seven children suffered from a severe form of muscular dystrophy, scoliosis and dyst developmental delay. Two of deve the boys had been lying naked on the concrete floor nak without any medical care or with adequate ministration for ade o v e r t e n y e a r s . We immediately organised a im fundraiser concert at Hard fu Rock Hotel with Superman Ro is Dead, Nav Navicula and a number of other local bands. The proceeds from fro this concert and the welcome help from the Governor of Bali allowed us to secure government land in Renon and build two separate, wheelchair accessible houses, provide medical care, therapy and customised wheelchairs to the afflicted boys. We also started a state of the art organic permaculture garden where the families are able to grow their own food including the superfood Moringa which we sell to hotels, cafes and various outlets. This happy ending was made true in part by the Governor who was speechless when he learned from me that these families lived so close to his own neighborhood. Later he became the Solemen Foundation’s ‘Pelindung’, our official protector. Another story is that of a 45-year old man who was caged by his family due to untreated mental health issues, a deplorable but often occurring method of dealing with such situations. After two years of ongoing treatment, holistic care and medical supervision, we freed Made from his cage and rebuilt his dilapidated home close by. He is now a semi-autonomous functioning adult and interacting normally within his community. Wayan Dik is nineteen years old and suffers from Epidermolysis Bullosa, an extremely painful genetic skin condition also known as ‘butterfly skin’ due to the severe vulnerability of the skin that erupts in painful sores and blisters comparable to third-degree burns. There is no known cure for this condition and the only treatment to alleviate it is a strict regimen of frequent applications of Aquaphor cream to the sores. Since Aquaphor cream is not available in Bali Solemen produce their own. This disease caused Wayan’s fingers and toes to fuse together until the Solemen team arranged plastic surgery to separate his webbed fingers. Despite this debilitating condition and his hand deformities Wayan was actively supported by Solemen in developing his talents as a craftsman and artist making imaginative lamps from lollipop sticks. After separating his
fingers he surprised us all by starting to create beautiful drawings. He now earns a respectable living from his efforts and his artful sketches especially are coveted by collectors. Recently Singapore Airlines commissioned several of his designs. The most wonderful benefit has been Wayan’s decision to give back and share with other disadvantaged children 50% of all funds received from the sale of his work. How do you go about fundraising? Are you still far from the 1 Million dollars? Ah! That’s a good question. Our biggest problem is sustainable funding. We are not the recipients of any government funding or ongoing support from corporate sponsors so we rely on a stream –not always steady as it turns out- of individual donations and partnerships with small businesses. We have a wonderful core of loyal Solemen supporters we call ‘Solemates’. They are Bali businesses who display the Solemen stickers at their place of business and pay us a small stipend in return for PR exposure. Many individuals respond to our frequent appeals on Facebook for acute cases. We also have a number of hotel partners with a $per night or per stay ‘opt-out’ programme for their guests. And I should mention that we currently have 3 vehicles generously donated for our use. Our 4WD car was donated by an Australian family and their friends so we can reach the Solebuddies who live in unreachable areas at the end of virtually unpassable roads. Another car, used to transport Solebuddies to and from therapy appointments, is sponsored by The Bali Dynasty Resort. Along with some other hotels they also sponsor treatment and education for some of our Solebuddies. Our present office space was kindly donated by one of our Solemen supporters. Mainly we hustle shamelessly and tirelessly through charitable events, auctions, coin boxes at several stores and through the sale of merchandise on which we get a percentage earmarked for our Solebuddies. But the big sponsorships from big companies still elude us. We are still chasing the big bucks from Corporates. What are the main challenges for Solemen at this point? Besides finding the elusive partner(s) with deep pockets, we need to seriously expand the reach of the Outreach Team. Our dream is to eventually have 8 teams on the road, each for a well-defined area of Bali. Our one team is currently overstretched. We have need for more doctors and medical care personnel. Secondly, we need to maintain funding to run our recently established ‘SOLEMEN HOUSE’ in the Panjer area on Renon in close proximity to Sanglah hospital for our ‘Solebuddies’ and/or their families who are attending regular care or treatments there pre and post procedures. We also need more sustainable funding for our ‘Power of Nutrition’ programme which is one of the most effective tools in the Solemen arsenal. This programme distributes nutritional supplements like Pediasure, Ensure and Moringa to malnourished children and adults. You have a catchy logo and a wacky tagline. Yes, the logo is us: we go wherever help is needed. The #WHOGIVESABUCK? tag is edgy and eye-catching. It’s a campaign we hope will entice people to chip in a buck, a quid, a bob, a fiver or whatever loose change is rattling in their pocket. A bit of pocket change can be a lifeline for our ‘SoleBuddies’ who are destitute, ill, disabled and malnourished or have no easy access to medical care. Pocket change allows us to continue our quest to make a significant change in the lives of those in need through our Solemen Outreach programme. But our cutest ambassador is our mascot, the cuddly Soleteddy who represents a beacon of hope for our Solebuddies. Soleteddies are popularly sold in many places in Bali.
How can people help? You can see more of what we do -and need - on our Solemen website, www.solemen.org or on Facebook. Donations, sponsorships, or providing some items on our Wish List will go a long way to help us create smiles, give hope and change lives forever. We love it when the buck stops here.

Balinese communities and how we, as a Rotary club, can help. Mike O’Leary, Director of the ROLE Foundation (Rivers, Oceans, Lakes, and Ecology) recently spoke to us about an international problem…mountains of plastic. HELLO FROM ROTARY CLUB BALI SEMINYAK Rotary Club Bali Seminyak recently celebrated its 15th birthday and we’re proud to have 50 members with more joining us on a regular basis. Our club is one of five English speaking Rotary Clubs in Bali and we invite YOU to come and have lunch with us at the Trans Resort. For meeting dates and times, please check out our calendar at rotaryseminyak. org/events/calendar. You would be most welcome. Doing good in the world is what Rotary is all about and Rotary Club Bali Seminyak is doing its part. You’ll find our club at work in many Regencies of Bali and on other islands as well. On Bali, the club currently has over nine active projects in the Regencies of Karangasem, Gianyar, Tabanan and Klungkung. On Flores, a huge water project is bringing clean water to over a thousand people in 10 villages. There are even MORE projects waiting in the wings. ‘Hands for Tista” is one of our projects taking place in Karangasem, and is aimed at helping poverty level families…defined as earning less than US$ 2.00 a day... create more income. How? By raising pigs! This project initially purchased 10 female 1 piglets and p one male o pig. p Then, with T the help t and advice a of local village leadership, ten poverty level po
families were identified and each was given a female piglet. At maturation (about 6 months) each female piglet was visited by the male pig (who clearly enjoys his work). When the female pig delivers a litter of piglets, half of them will go to other waiting poverty level families. Because families can’t afford to buy pre-prepared pig food, these pigs are fed natural wild foliage collected from the surrounding area. This makes the pigs more valuable because they have ingested zero chemicals or antibiotics. They taste better, too! Coming at the end of August, the local government clinic in Payangan, Gianyar will be sending its staff of doctors, dentists, and nurses to elementary schools to examine over 500 elementary school children. Parents are invited to participate in this health check-up. Doctors will also teach children (and parents) about basic hygiene with a huge emphasis on hand washing. The World Health Organization tells us that keeping our hands clean reduces illness from diarrhea by 50%. For more information about our projects please see http:// rotaryseminyak.org/ SitePage/clubprojects. Informative guest speakers at our meetings give uss insights into important ant ‘goings on’ in Bali and throughout Indonesia. From these guest speakers we often learn about major needs in our
In between working on projects, the club is always ready for fun and fellowship. President Alex Jovanovic, General Manager at the Trans Resort, makes our twice a month club meetings light hearted and informal…with delicious lunches, too! Occasional Vocational Tours take us to places we might never see in Bali…like a pig farm! In support of the Smile Foundation, one of our members invites everyone to free Sunday brunches… with hopes attendees will leave a donation. So, if you have a couple of hours to spare and are interested in what happens behind the scenes in Bali, come join for lunch! By: Marilyn Carson

31 BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS IN BALI: COULD YOUR PET SAVE A LIFE? “HELP, BLOOD DONOR NEEDED FOR MY DOG!” is a relatively common cry for help in the Sunset Vet waiting room and on social media in Bali, where cases of life threatening anaemia from tick-borne disease are common. Bali doesn’t have a canine blood bank like some Western countries do, and synthetic blood products such as ‘platelet-rich plasma’ (also available in UK, USA, Australia etc.) are also not available here. As a result, dog owners are forced to plea for help from other dog owners, with mixed results as the donors found are often not ideal donors but used nonetheless for want of a better alternative. Ticks the major vector for disease Ticks are everywhere in Bali (see our Sunset Vet article last month “Bravecto /Nexgard Most Effective for Ticks”). They are the vectors for the dreaded ‘blood parasite’ diseases Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis. Pedigree breeds such as Huskys, German Shepherds and Poodles are particularly susceptible to these diseases and have little natural immunity like the indigenous Bali Dogs have. Preventing these diseases is all about minimizing the number of ticks attaching to your dog, and regular vet checkups to nip it in the bud before the parasite gets into the bone marrow and spleen. When is a blood transfusion necessary? Healthy dogs have a red blood cell count of 39%-55%. As a rule of thumb at Sunset Vet we do not recommend blood transfusion unless the red blood cell count, also known as ‘haematocrit’ or ‘packed cell volume/PCV’ is less than 15%. However as an example if it was at 24% then days later is at 20%, this means it is dropping worryingly fast and a transfusion may be initiated early. Why wait for it to drop so low, why not treat earlier? Firstly, because blood transfusion has some potentially serious adverse effects including allergic reactions. Secondly, because many dogs will respond positively to the drugs used to treat their blood infections and that will be enough to increase their red blood cell counts without the need for a blood transfusion. Do dogs have blood groups as humans do? Yes indeed - over a dozen different blood groups have been identified in dogs, but rather than the O/A/B/AB and rhesus +/- system in humans, dogs are categorised according to Dog Erythrocyte Antigen (DEA) group. Some types of dogs such as those carrying DEA 1.1 cannot be blood donors as it would induce acute haemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) in the recipient dog. Thus once a potential blood donor is found, blood must be taken from both donor and recipient dogs and ‘cross-matched’ in the Sunset Vet lab to see if the transfusion is a match or not. Which dogs make suitable blood donors? Selecting an appropriate donor is the first step to providing a safe, effective transfusion. Donors should never have received a blood transfusion themselves. They should be of docile temperament and have easily accessible jugular veins to facilitate blood collection. Donors should be free of infectious diseases and fully vaccinated. Since we are using human blood collection systems, canine donors should be > 25 kg. This allows approximately 450 ml of blood to be collected without risk to the donor. In Western countries greyhounds are often recom-
mended as good choices for donors because of their size, temperament, slender necks and availability, but this breed is very rare in Bali so not used. Female canine donors should not have previously given birth, as this may have induced antibodies, which could cause a transfusion reaction. Diseases potentially transmitted by transfusion in dogs are heartworm and the tick-borne diseases babesiosis, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis. Is there any risk to the donor dog? At Sunset Vet we have never had any significant complications happen to a donor dog, however they are carefully screened to make sure the donor is in good health prior to giving blood. Most dogs will require sedation to have the blood taken, as they need to sit still for 15-20 minutes while the blood is drawn. After giving blood the donor is usually hospitalised at the clinic for 1 night as to replace the volume of blood taken, vets need to give 3 times that volume of saline by IV infusion. Red blood cell counts of the donor are taken before and after the transfusion to make sure they are safe to go home.
C/CI/G-12 April 17
What is the success rate of blood transfusions at Sunset Vet? This is difficult to quantify as do we measure success by fully recovering from illness, or by extending lifespan by 2 weeks or 2 months? When treating anaemic dogs that are suffering from tick-borne blood parasites, the outcome is usually positive if the transfusion is performed before the disease has got to a very advanced stage. Certain breeds also tend to respond better to transfusions than others, and other factors include how close a cross-match the donor and recipient were. What about cats? Do they ever need blood transfusions? Cats do not tend to suffer from tick infestations; partly because they are obsessive groomers so would not allow the tick to attach. However they can develop anaemia from another cat specific blood parasite called Hemobartonella felis which is also spread via vectors such as fleas and lice. The ideal feline donor weighs 5-7 kg. This body weight allows approximately 60 ml of blood to safely be collected. Cats that are allowed to roam free outdoors should not be used as blood donors. Cats are MORE complicated to give blood transfusions to as the exact blood type must be known in both donor and recipient, there is no ‘universal donor’. All cats of blood type B have strong antibodies against type A cells and all type A cats have antibodies against type B cells, even if a previous transfusion has not been given. Fortunately blood transfusions in cats are a much rarer occurrence than those in dogs.

Under the Tamarind Trees! Pekandelan Warung is located under the tamarind trees at the entrance to the Tegenungan waterfall in Kemenuh. It consists of a number of small eating areas, inside and outside, all very comfortable and clean. You can even eat on a platform up in one of the giant tamarind trees. In the kitchen is talented young Balinese chef Wayan Sudana who after working for many years with a number of great International chefs at The Viceroy’s award-winning CasCades restaurant is now doing his own thing! Restaurant food at warung prices! In my never ending quest to discover interesting new entrees or snacks I have found yet another one. As with a few of the dishes on this menu it has a weird ‘English’ name, O’Mince! But don’t let the name fool you, I love the end result. Patties of shredded beef are wrapped around a nut of mozzarella cheese, not unlike another of my favourites, the Sicilian Polpettini, crumbed and fried. A simple tasty snack, a squirt of chilli sauce on top [tomato if you prefer] gives it just that bit of extra oomph! Chicken Quesadillas are also available as is another unusual item, the Bread Bowl. It is a round bread roll that has been hollowed out and filled with a mix of chicken, onion, parmesan, mozzarella and coleslaw then baked in the oven. The Steak Sandwich is actually served in a toasted baguette but there is an Open Sandwich on local toasted bread topped with bacon, tomato and cheese. Burgers [beef, chicken or beef, bacon and cheese] and a Wrap [chicken, avocado and tomato] and normal sandwiches, a few salads [shrimp and avocado] and Squid Rings or the local favourite, Lumpia [vegetable mix rolled in wonton skin, served with Thai sweet chilli sauce]. There are two dishes that appear on hundreds of Indonesian menus, the Thai Tom Yum Goong and the French Cordon Bleu [more often than not referred to in Bali as Gordon Blue]. The Indonesian versions are rarely close to the originals. Both are on the menu here and in the case of the ‘Gordon Bleau’ [close] chef presents a tasty modification of the original. The flattened chicken breast is rolled around ham and cheese and
crumbed before deep-frying, The resultant sausage shape is served cross-sliced, with fries. An excellent dish and at Rp.40,000++ an example of the quite incredible dining value at Pekandelan.

The Ayam Goreng [a quarter chicken, including the leg] also has a tamarind treatment, before and after deep frying. The Laksa is slightly sour and slightly spicy, a good copy of the Singaporean original of chicken, shrimp, noodles and egg in coconut milk. Seafood can be Whole Fish, grilled and served with sambal matah, Prawns in black pepper or small Lombok Scallops, sweet and spicy. The Nasi Goreng can be basic [fried rice with chicken, egg and vegetables], or with bacon or seafood added. Rendang Sapi is the wet version not the dry one as seen in the Padang shops. Chicken Sate, Curry or Nuggets [all Rp. 40,000++ or less] complete the offerings at this great value spot. They do not have a full license so wine is not available but you can bring your own if you wish. However the beer drinkers are well looked after, the ‘Bucket of Beer’ is 5 small Bintangs for just Rp.120,000++, and it comes with a plate of fries.

For dessert there is a traditional Affogato from Italy and a Black Rice Pudding as made in the villages of Bali.

With the cost at some Bali restaurants now almost equaling international prices Pekandelan is a gem! A great place to visit, tasty food and ever so cheap! There not many places in the world where you can enjoy a good 3 course meal at these prices, let alone in such a perfect Bali setting.

CasCades @ The Viceroy is stoutly defending its reputation as one of Bali’s best fine dining restaurants. At Nagi village, north-east of Ubud, their internationally acclaimed Belgian chef Nic Vanderbeeken has produced a sensational 9 course degustation menu [you can also order it as just a 5 or 7 course] that combines local and international cuisines in a marriage that leaves you wanting for more. The three opening canapés just whet your taste buds for what is to follow. Royal Tartar uses raw ccubed Wagyu beef with celery, quail egg a and baby potato and a pumpkin ginger m meringue. Next is a Smooth Liver Pate w with quail egg, cherry, summer truffle and to toast. The CasCades Crayfish is with h heirloom tomato, avocado, bell-pepperS Strawberry and kroepoek basil. Hokkaido H Hot Stone Dashi uses fresh seafood with se seaweed caviar, ikura, miso and smoked bo bouillon. The Sumatran Crab is poached wi with bisque. The crab is served with bubur, pic pickled kohlrabi and fennel. Jimbaran Legs ar are marinated grilled octopus with ca cauliflower, acar, coral tuilles, sweet potato and kemangi sauce. Main course no. 1 is Re Rendang Sapi. This version is one of the bes best dishes I have ever tasted. The beef che cheek cuts like butter, the taste so well bala balanced with acar vegetables, kha kai, gre green sambal [to use as you wish] and mustard frills in that unique rendang sauce. If you have ordered only 5 courses then you choose between the Rendang and the Duck, The 7 and 9 courses include both. Balinese Muscovy Duck. The dish comprises a rich consommé with a floating mushroom duck dumpling and roasted duck breast with rice husk, carrot miso, beetroots and raspberry sauce. To finish a Paradise Dream of pandan crêpe, mango, vanilla ice cream, coconut sorbet, chocolate sabayon, gingersnap and calamansi. This is refined dining in a setting that can only be Bali, in an open space above the misty river, very professional service, but still with that Bali smile. An experience to remember!
Kuu is the Izakaya restaurant at the front of the Maya Sanur Resort, on Jln Danau Tamblingan, Sanur. Izakaya is a Japanese tradition, a place to enjoy many different small plates of contrasting tastes. A recent addition to the very traditional menu here has been the sushi rolls [maki], a variety of fillings wrapped with sushi rice in a seaweed roll, and cross sliced. There is tuna, normal, or spicy, salmon, and a range of vegetarian; Kappa [cucumber], Shinko [radish pickle] or the Vegan [shiitake, cucumber, mango and carrot]. The more exotic include Karaage [crumbed chicken], Wakame, Salmon Skin, Ebiten [prawn tempura] and the Kuu specials with grilled eel.

Happy Chappy has now re-opened Jln. Raya Pantai Berawa No. 888 in Canggu. The original location proved to be way too small for the demand for in-house dining so after a one week closure to transfer kitchen, etc, they are now in bigger premises [with parking] 400 metres further along the same road. The menu is a little smaller than what is offered at the much larger Jln Braban restaurant but still quite extensive. You can eat in, takeaway or order home delivery. Great Cantonese dishes including Roast Duck, Crispy Skin Chicken or old favourites Lemon Chicken, Kung Pao Prawns, Sweet & Sour Pork or Mongolian Beef. Many Dim Sum and vegetarian options as well as their incredible Sang Choy Bow [4 options but the minced duck is the one for me] and my recent discovery, a plate of Salt & Pepper Chicken. Naam Thai is on Jln. Camplung Tunduk [usually referred to as Jln. Gado-Gado] in Seminyak. It may be Thai in style but the food is definitely Indonesian Thai [the Yum Neua, Thai Beef Salad, even comes with lettuce, tomato and onion!]. All the standards are here, Tom Yam Goong, Tom Kha Gai, Curries [red, green and masaman], and a range of stir-fries although some of the dishes appear to be more Asian general rather than Thai. Then there is an Indonesian menu and an international menu.
Warung Enak, Raya Pengosekan, is one of the few high quality specialty Indonesian restaurants in Bali. Long renowned for both their incredible Rijstaffel [more than 20 small plates but arriving in 4 separate servings, and their hands-on cooking classes], Warung Enak has now added a couple of new dishes for the high season. Ayam Sambal Mangga is another Enak creation, a grilled chicken leg that has been marinated in Balinese spices and is accompanied by a tangy sambal of young green mango, served with banana leaf wrapped coconut milk rice. Asem-Asem Ikan is lightly poached tilapia, fresh water fish, in a traditional spicy sour broth with star fruit, grilled prawns and sweet potato fries. Urutan Babi is that great Balinese pork sausage with star fruit leaves in coconut milk, with roasted pumpkin. Making a comeback to the menu, by popular demand, is that Balinese special Babi Kecap. This version using sweet soy [kecap manis] braised pork belly, sitting on a bed of steamed rice. Though for me I can seldom go past another Enak creation, Ayam Mangga, It is a coconut crusted chicken breast stuffed with a puree of mango sitting on grilled zucchini logs above a wow turmeric sauce. Kiln has replaced Cafe Petitenget on Raya Petitenget. The new menu seems to be very Mod OZ with American touches [pancakes for breakfast]. There are not many standard dishes, even for breakfast. The Sausages & Eggs come with spiced eggplant, the Omelette is with spinach, tomato and feta, Shakshouka is with chorizo and then there is the strange puzzle; Falafel, Banging Hummus and Organic Honey Yemek? Lunch is just simple, Wraps [barramundi and tazatziki], Salads and Char-Grilled Skewers [lamb kofte with salsa verde, octopus paprika, tofu and baby leek for the vegetarians]. Dinner time [3 separate menus?] add meat [BBQ brined chicken, crisp pork and spiced pumpkin] and fish [grilled sardines, black pepper crab] served with ‘fired’ vegetables.

Local News Bali prison escapee Shaun Davidson taunts police with wanted posters on Facebook Bali prison escapee Shaun Davidson has poked fun at international police on social media more than a month after he fled the notorious Kerobokan jail. Davidson shared a series of mocked-up missing person and wanted posters, emblazoned with his image, to his Facebook page last night. “Possible whereabouts: Not sure but we’re close,” one of the posters read. Another poster offered a “huge reward” for the Perth man’s capture, along with the text “straight outtta Kerobokan”. The posts followed a taunting message to Interpol Manila’s secretariat on Sunday night. “Hey how’s it going (sic) just wondering when you say close how close are you really,” he wrote. Davidson was one of a group of four inmates who successfully tunneled out of the notorious Kerobokan prison on June 19. Two of his accomplices have since been caught, while Davidson and another suspect Tee Kok King, remain at large. Davidson, or someone writing on his behalf, regularly flaunts his freedom to authorities under the handle Matthew Rageone Ridler since his escape. The 33-year-old was only two months and 15 days from being released from Kerobokan on charges of using another person’s passport. He is also wanted for drug charges in Perth. Last week Davidson’s crowdfunding campaign was shut down after it raised just $65 of its $50,000 target. [Nine News July 25, 2017] Perth father flown home from Bali after mid-operation cardiac arrest Perth doctors say a father who was flown home from Bali has suffered a medical complication that almost never happens in Australia. Steven Didmon went into cardiac arrest during a minor operation. He is now being treated at Fiona Stanley Hospital after an emergency flight back from Indonesia. The 39-year-old was rushed home on a mercy flight after a horror ordeal in a Balinese hospital. He had gone in for a routine hernia operation, but something went wrong after he was administered an epidural and he went into cardiac arrest. His sister said Mr Didmon was awake but not communicating and was heavily sedated. “We’re so relieved just knowing he’s here and he’s in the best care possible,” she said. Complications during epidurals are almost unheard of in Australia. Six in every million end in complications, and doctors are unsure if Mr Didmon has any permanent damage. He has been living in Bali with his wife and child and had tried to have the surgery done in Perth but was not eligible for Medicare because he is not a resident. In Perth the procedure would have cost $20,000 with a six month delay. Treatment in Bali was his only option, but now his family is facing a mountain of medical bills totaling close to $100,000. [Yahoo7 July 31, 2017] Govt begins building roads with plastic waste mix in Bali Government began to build roads using plastic waste mixed with asphalt in Jimbaran, Bali, on Saturday (29/7). Deputy coordinating minister of maritime affairs Safri Burhanuddin said that this technology is applicable to all roads in Indonesia. “This technology is pretty simple, anyone can do it,” Safri Burhanuddin said on Sunday (30/7). Safri continued that his unit works with Indonesia Plastic Recycling Association (Adupi) to anticipate plastic waste supply used in asphalt mix. “Adupi operates in 16 cities and has fully committed to supply plastic waste from the cities.” This technology of using plastic waste in asphalt mix was invented by an Indian Chemistry scientist Rajagopalan Vasudevan in 2015. Today, India has built more than 25 thousand kilometers of roads with this technology. Earlier this year, last June, Coordinating Maritime Ministry and Rajagopalan Vasudevan have signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) to transfer the technology and to use the patent of this technology. [Tempo.Co July 30, 2017] Brit tourist speared through the neck by a swordfish Alan Pope, 57, was sitting in his boat about to go snorkelling when the huge fish launched itself from the sea and hit him. The force of the impact threw him to the floor of the boat and snapped off the tip of the giant bill-fish’s harpoon – leaving six inches embedded in his neck. Incredibly the spear – about the same size and sharpness of a kitchen knife – narrowly missed all the major arteries in Alan’s neck. He had to endure a 30-minute boat ride back to shore with blood pouring from the wound. The spear was so close to his jugular and carotid arteries that it took a 36 hours, and three different hospitals, before doctors dared remove it. The brush with death came as Alan and wife Sharon, 55, were about half an hour out to sea off the tiny Indonesian island of Lembongan near Bali. He said: “I was just a bit mystified through the whole thing. It didn’t really hurt much, it didn’t feel too bad. But it did start to dawn on me that I might bleed out and die. “The beak missed my jugular by just a millimetre – the doctors said afterwards that if the surgery had gone wrong I could have bled out in three minutes.” Sharon said: “It was a really scary experience – but he was such a Trojan. He never complained. Medical staff at the tiny village hall ‘hospital’ were able to remove the top half of the beak from the side of his neck but the rest was too deeply embedded for them to safely reach it. Alan said: “Taking out that half of the beak was actually the worst thing they could have done – they should have left it in. “Someone then came and told us we had to go back to Bali to a proper hospital. “So we rushed back to our hotel, threw everything in a bag and then had to get a boat back to the mainland – all while I had a swordfish beak stuck in my throat.” Even after the couple arrived back in Bali, they were made to visit two different hospitals – because doctors were not sure how to safely remove the six-inch beak. Alan said that despite an x-ray at the first hospital confirming the beak lodged in his throat he was then sent 40 minutes away to a different hospital for a CT scan. “The doctors were concerned about safely getting the beak out,” he said. “It was so close to my jugular – it was right in the middle of a fork between two main arteries – so they weren’t sure how to do it safely.” He added: “We also had a lot of problems getting in touch with our insurance company to prove we had insurance, because of the time difference.” It wasn’t until 36 hours after the incident, and following a three-and-a-half hour operation, that the beak was safely removed from Alan’s throat. Just over a week later Alan was well enough to board a plane to Australia with Sharon to continue their travels. He added: “It made me more determined to carry on. “The doctors told me I was either the luckiest man alive, or the unluckiest. He brought the swordfish beak home with him as a memento of his ‘freak accident’ - and has also since had a tattoo of a swordfish on his arm. [The Sun July 29, 2017] ‘Memorial paddle’ honors Sydney toddler who drowned in Bali Kawa Sweeney, the three-year-old girl who died after being pulled unconscious from a pool in Bali, has been honored with a memorial paddle-out at a Sydney beach. More than 100 of Kawa’s relatives and friends met at Newport Beach for the touching ceremony this morning. Kawa’s mother and father, Dee Tang and Desmond Sweeney, were among several mourners who paddled into the water on surfboards. The surfers formed a large, floating circle and splashed their hands in the gentle waves. An array of colorful floral wreaths were also laid at the water’s edge. Kawa was on a family holiday when she was found unconscious in a resort pool of on July 24. A GoFundMe campaign raised money to transport the toddler back to Perth for emergency care at Princess Margaret Hospital, but she could not be revived. Kawa’s parents, from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, made the heart-breaking decision to switch off her life support four days after the accident. “Thank you to everyone who has supported us with their thoughts, prayers, love and donations,” family spokesperson Pearl Tan said at the time. “We are overwhelmed with your generosity and are grateful for all that you have given us in this difficult time.” [Nine News August 6, 2017]
German tourist hospitalised after Mount Agung rescue A German tourist is lucky to have escaped severe injury after falling 20 metres into a crater while hiking Mount Agung in Bali on Thursday, August 3. Torge Zenst, 19-years-old, began ascending the iconic tourist spot with friends Ricet Sremaem and Frasiskus Bermaum, also 19-years-old, around 1.30 p.m. without a guide. As the weather turned, fog caused poor visibility but the trio pushed on, Bali Post reported. While circling the crater, which sits at 2843 metres above sea level, Zenst slipped and fell. The incident occurred around 5.30 p.m. Local guide I Ketut Dana was the first on the scene and quickly reported to authorities, which launched a rescue team including personnel from local search and rescue, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), local police, military and volunteers. Poor weather conditions hampered search and rescue efforts, but the trio was eventually rescued by the team at 7 a.m. Zenst sustained injuries to his legs, face and head. He was found conscious and responsive. He was evacuated to the BaliMed Karangasem Hospital for treatment. [Indonesia Expat August 4, 2017] German father and daughter drown while surfing near Pecatu Two German tourists, a 46-year-old German and his 19-year-old daughter, have drowned tragically off Nyang Nyang Beach in Pecatu, South Kuta on Thursday, August 3, 2017. NusaBali reports that Ismail Gocmen and his daughter Perin Gocmen were surfing at 4:00 pm when they were caught by a large rolling wave that resulted in their drowning. The bodies of the two were quickly recovered and brought to shore. The Father-Daughter team of surfers was staying at Villa Bombora Surf Camp on Padang Padang Beach in Pecatu, South Kuta in the company of Zoehre Gocmen (40), the sister of Ismail. The tragedy unfolded when the 19-year-old girl disappeared beneath the surf. The girl’s father attempted to save his drowning daughter, dying in the process. Zoehre Gocmen who was helpless to prevent the death of her elder brother, Ismail, or her niece, Perin, witnessed the entire incident from shore. The woman raised the alarm with lifeguards on the beach who found the two bodies less than a half-hour later only 200-meters from shore. Both bodies were sent to the Sanglah General Hospital for forensic examination. [www.balidiscovery.com August 6, 2017] Indonesia police ordered to shoot drug dealers to tackle ‘narcotics emergency’ Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, has told law enforcement officers to shoot drug traffickers to deal with what he called a “narcotics emergency” facing the country. “Be firm, especially to foreign drug dealers who enter the country and resist arrest. Shoot them because we indeed are in a narcotics emergency position now,” Widodo said in a speech delivered at a political event late on Friday. His remarks have drawn comparisons to those of Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte, who launched a brutal anti-drug crackdown about a year ago that saw thousands of alleged drug dealers and drug users killed. The bloody campaign in the Philippines has drawn condemnation from the international community, including the United Nations. Indonesia also has tough laws on drugs. Widodo has previously been criticized for ordering the execution of convicted drug traffickers who were given a death penalty by the court. Rights activists and some governments have called on Indonesia to abolish the death penalty. Friday’s order from Widodo came a week after Indonesian police shot dead a Taiwanese man in a town near the capital, Jakarta. The man, who was part of a group trying to smuggle a tonne of crystal methamphetamine into the country, was killed for resisting arrest, police have said. After the incident, Indonesian national police chief Tito Karnavian was quoted by media as saying he had ordered officers not to hesitate shooting drug dealers who resist arrest. Reggy Widjaya was born and grew up in Semarang, Central Java. After earning a degree in architecture at Tarumanagara University in 1994 and a Masters in architecture at Khatolieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, he worked for 20 years in the field. In 1997, Reggy and three other architects took over a friend’s garage and established TETRA (“four” in Greek) that grew into an award-winning architectural and interior consultancy company. In 2007, he received the “Indonesian Architectural Construction Award.” Reggy is a member of the Association of Indonesian Architects (IAI) and ASEAN ARCHITECT.
I grew up in a big old house that gave me an appreciation of the natural wisdom of vernacular architecture. As a kid, drawing and sketching were always enjoyable and these interests carried on into my professional life. How would you describe your architectural style? Contemporary Vernacular. In 2015, I wrote a book A Small Step on the Journey of the Evolution of Architecture, that laid out my ideas of what architecture should accomplish. I’ve learned that design should always be approached in multiple ways. Western designs are not always appropriate for Indonesia. Western oriented concepts should blend with eastern oriented concepts, regional identity and sustainable development. Can you give some examples? Indonesia is tropical archipelago where humidity is a big problem. Using building materials and windows in a house building that do not make allowances for the oppressiveness of local weather and environment will cause health issues and could even make the interior of a structure uninhabitable. Also when designing the façade of a commercial building in Indonesia a number of circumstances have to be taken into consideration: window canopy, building height, type of glass used, etc. What are the challenges in designing environmentally sustainable buildings? Added building costs. The initial costs for a building that uses green technologies and materials is very high. Unlike Bandung in West Java, there are no tax breaks or free credits on building permits for green buildings in Jakarta. In spite of this, I always encourage the developers and owners of a prospective project to get their building certified with the Green Building Council. It is beneficial to society and will save them money in the long run. What inspired you to take up a career in architecture? I started learning architecture when I was at Kolese Loyola high school. One of my teachers inspired me to see the beauty and art in buildings such as the Chapel in Ronchamp by Le Corbusier in France. After studying in Europe, I realized that I wanted to become a professional. Starting out in a garage, my company TETRA now has been operating for 20 years. We now have a workshop, a storage facility, a two-story office building and the number of our employees has increased from two to 160. What are the advantages of basing your offices in Jakarta? Since most of our focus is on commercial buildings, the majority of our clients and developers are corporations

From our work with business owners, we have learned a lot about many aspects of efficiency and effectiveness in construction. We also work on projects outside Jakarta. A few years ago we won the competition for designing the new parliament building in East Timor. We’ve also done many projects in Bali, mostly hotels and villas. Our most recent is the Fame Hotel on Sunset

Road in south Bali. What ways can Jakarta fight urban sprawl? Urban sprawl occurs in all the major cities of the world. Despite having carried out many comprehensive research studies and the passing (but not enforcement) of numerous regulations, nothing has been substantially accomplished by previous city governments in Jakarta. The biggest problem of this megalopolis is in fact political and bureaucratic corruption. Only with a strong, strict and fair government will Jakarta ever be able to solve its problems. Do you teach? I taught at Jakarta’s University of Tarumanagara during my career. Though I quit my job as a teacher in 2003, I continue to share my knowledge and still volunteer to speak on campuses and in seminars.

What architects do you most admire? The Indonesian architect YB Mangunwijaya. I also admire the work of the Spaniard Santiago Calatrava. Both of these architects brilliantly combine the techniques and styles of vernacular architecture, contemporary engineering and innovative environmentally-friendly designs. What is your ultimate goal? I’ve always dreamed that someday I will design a truly green building that has zero impact on the environment, yet incorporates all the wisdom of native vernacular architecture. I dream of making TETRA one of Indonesia’s leading innovators in architecture and a pioneer in the country’s architectural green revolution. Which of all the buildings you’ve designed do want to be remembered for?

I am proudest of those works that have made my clients happy. One such building is Trisula Center, a small 5-storey office building in West Jakarta. Although the tallest building I’ve ever worked on is 60 floors high, this little gem of an office building has a unique quality and incorporates efficiency in a way that is professionally very satisfying for me.
