Step Into Batu Bolong’s Most Stylish Closet

If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you!

Shopping for fashion in Bali these days offers so much more than the ubiquitous sarong dress and sandals. My sojourn through the streets of Batu Bolong recently unearthed another magical little boutique, Velvet the Label - a shop that is destined to become one of my favourite fashion haunts. Step into this stylish closet filled with local designs and discover a treasure trove of cool, colourful and original pieces to keep you looking your best for every Bali day and balmy evening!

Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.

A veteran of the fashion industry, Alana Miller has been successfully producing clothes for other retailers and independent brands since she was in her teens. Buoyed by her continued success, experience and extensive knowledge of the garment industry in Indonesia, she recently decided to channel that creativity into her own pet project and opened Velvet the Label in Gg Nyepi Canggu, (across from Little Flinders Cafe) in August of 2017. In just a few short months, this divine little boutique is already enjoying a loyal following with images of models and bloggers adorned in Velvet the Label designs gracing many a social media account; a surefire indication that the ladies are indeed loving these fresh new designs. The boutique is intimate and inviting and chock full of ready to wear ladies attire. Peruse the racks of this pretty store and you’ll find florals, frills and flirty styles to suit a broad range of figures. The clothing oozes femininity with flattering and classic cuts branching into edgier pieces that are just perfect for those frozen margarita Fridays girls!!

Seeking some stylish accessories to finish off your look? Browse a little longer and you’ll find the perfect woven clutch to carry your essentials along with a stunning scarf to add an extra pop of colour. Hand crafted leather bags and belts complete the picture and before you know it you’ll be looking hot to trot, turning heads and heading out on the town! Find fresh coloured basics for every day wear to pair with flouncy wrap skirts in on-trend season patterns or polka dots and must have animal prints (got to love a little leopard print in every wardrobe I say!). Look for their line of simple tanks, muscles and off the shoulder tops that match perfectly with classic denim bottoms. Their signature Velvet bodysuit is a continuous staple in store with new colours and styles adding to their collection on a regular basis.

Drop into Velvet The Label and update your wardrobe with some fashion pieces that will definitely add the ‘wow’ factor to your next night out. What’s the wager that you won’t leave this gorgeous Batu Bolong boutique without a bag of Velvet goodies in your hand! Check out their Instagram account: @velvetthelabel for some fabulous pics of these gorgeous fashion finds or see them for yourself in store along Gang Nyepi, opposite Little Flinders Cafe in Batu Bolong.

Let Finns Take the Tension Out of Planning Your Next Party beverage package to suit your group. If you want to ensure wet weather doesn’t threaten to dampen the party mood, choose Bounce Trampoline Centre for the kids’ next birthday bash. The tramp team can put together a line up of party games like dodgeball, your very own disco or simply a few hours of free bouncing! You could also create a combo and include a few games of ten pin on the lanes at Strike Indoor Bowling adjacent to Bounce and Strike Cafe provides the perfect place for party groups to enjoy Does the thought of planning a kids’ party put you into a cold sweat? Don’t be deterred from organising an awesome day for your favourite family member just because you think you have to put together the event yourself. Finns Recreation Club is the perfect place to host your next family celebration. With all of the entertainment options you’ll ever need to keep everyone happy, excited and entertained Finns is a one stop shop for birthdays, end of term celebrations or graduation parties. Where else would you be able to find a safe and secure venue with such a variety of activities to suit every age group? Long gone are those grim days where party games to engage your guests were limited to pass the parcel and pin the tail on the donkey! At Finns, the only limit to your party program is your imagination!

Plan your next party around activities to really get your guests involved and active. You can choose an entertainment package that focuses on one or two venues or include them all and with trampolining, ten pin bowling, water slides and a kids only club to consider, the options are exciting! In this digital age, kids spend enough time glued to a small screen so any opportunity for some activity is always welcomed and what kid wouldn’t want to spend their birthday at a water park with their mates! Splash Water Park offers a great variety of slides and rides to engage partygoers in a day filled with thrill seeking and aquatic fun yet intimate enough to keep a close eye on your crew. Lifeguards on duty ensure that guests are safe and under care and attention at all times. There are ample undercover areas for groups to gather for private functions and Splash can fashion a food and

birthday cake with a view over the Bounce Arena. Birthday guests a little too tiny for bowling or bouncing? Cubby House Kids Club is king when it comes to planning parties for pint sized peeps! As well as providing a fully supervised and secure area for the kids to run and play, Cubby House also has designated party rooms where the birthday crowd can celebrate in private. The party planners at Cubby House can create a themed party complete with drinks and snacks to satisfy your hungry crowd. Adios any trauma and tears associated with party planning and contact the experts at Finns Recreation Club to help you put together the perfect birthday celebration for your cherub’s next milestone. Email them on: events@finnsrecclub.com for an event free of headaches and hassles allowing you to be a part of the fun too!

Celebrate Australia Day With a Swim & an Aussie Barbie Splash will be open all day from 9am until 5pm so you can work up a super sized thirst and an appetite for some Aussie tucker as you climb the stairs to ride the slides all morning, then join everyone for lunch and an afternoon in the Great Outdoors. Head to Finns Recreation Club on January 26th for ice cold beers and Aussie tunes and hang around for a few innings as Australia versus the ‘Rest Of The World’ in the avo. Not an Aussie? Never fear! You couldn’t get a country with a bigger melting pot of cultures which means everyone is welcome to join in and get a taste of Australian spirit. Come dressed in Aussie coloured clobber - Choose an Akubra or chuck on a Jackie Howe but be sure to bring your cozzie and settle in for a swim, some sun and rib tickling fun. I can already smell those snags sizzling…..! Finns Recreation Club is located on Jalan Canggu Club, Canggu. Nothing says ‘Straya’ quite like a barbie, some pavlova or a lamington….. Add to that an all day Happy Hour, non stop water slides, a game of handball and a few flying Havaianas and you’ve got everything you need to enjoy a cracking good Australia Day abroad! Whether you’re an Aussie just visiting beautiful Bali or one who has opted to live here and love it ‘long time’, there’s always a moment when each of us look for a few reminders of home. Comforts from the mother land might simply be the smell of a sausage sizzle, the scent of lawn clippings on a Sunday avo or laughing with friends over a few cold brews. Whatever triggers your yearning for a taste of the Great Southern Land, you’ll no doubt satisfy any stirrings of homesickness when you join in the Australia Day celebrations at Finns Recreation Club on Friday, January 26th. Grab that tomato sauce bottle, apply liberally and wrap your laughing gear around some Aussie BBQ delights, but leave

plenty of space for dessert ‘cos here comes the ‘Pav!’ You can whet your whistle without worrying too much about your wallet because Finns is keeping happy hour prices going for the whole day! With bellies full and cold beers in abundance, try your hand at thong (the rubber ones…) throwing and handball or throw yourself down the slip n slide. As we head towards the end of January and the weather is still warm, Australia Day is quite likely to be another scorcher so remember to pack your cozzies because Aussies are entitled to 50% off the price of a day pass at Splash! Just flash your Aussie ID at reception and you can cool off around the pool and on the slides for half the price. Splash is perfect for the whole family with slides and rides to suit every age group from the shallow toddler pool to the Speed Racer! (Gold and Platinum Finns Club members are entitled to full use of facilities as per membership benefits).

Hello Bali Lovers, Activists, and Do Gooders My name is Chris Sperduto also known as Helmet Man and now the proud incoming President of the Rotary Club Bali Canggu for the upcoming year starting July 1st. This letter is to introduce the community to a great opportunity to get involved and to make a lasting difference on this wonderful Island we are lucky to call our Home. First of all we want to introduce you to Rotary which is the LARGEST Service Club on the Planet. We have over 1.2 million members in over 33,000 Independent Clubs in over 260 Countries. Our Motto is “Service Above Self” and we are dedicated to making our world a better place both locally and globally. We also like to stress this aspect of Service by making sure we are clear that we do not have any ties to Politics, Business, or Religion. We meet for Fellowship/ Friendship and to create and implement Service Projects. Period. Our Club is connected to a powerful International Network to get things done. We are backed up by Rotary International which provides Support, Expertise, and Funding to all of its members and clubs. Rotary International is highly respected and is rated every year as one of the top service providers with the lowest ratio of expenses to giving meaning when someone donates 1 dollar they get almost 1 dollar of goods and services. But we are completely Independent to implement whatever projects we see a need to fulfill. So this is where you come in. I am asking for all the beautiful people on this island who are doing so many wonderful

things to unite. Come and join us and gain access to this incredible network to help you get things done. It is time to introduce you to our signature project that I have been passionately working on for the past 2 ½ years called Project Protect Helmet Man that we want to open up to the wider community and grow much larger. We are Educating Indonesian Families the importance of Wearing Helmets. Every year over 40,000 people die and over 300,000 are seriously injured because they are not wearing Helmets. It has been proven in many other countries that we can reduce that number by over 80% by getting people to wear Helmets and to Clip them. We have all witnessed the Mother or Father on the bikes with Children and they will wear a Helmet but the Children do not. This is to avoid a fine, not to protect themselves. So we get sponsors to buy the Helmets in exchange for their logo on the back of the Helmets and we then go to Kindergarten and 1st grade Schools and do Safety Presentations and distribute Helmets. So far we have given away over 10,000 Helmets but we are just getting started. We need your help to get this vital initiative to the next level. This is potentially 32,000 lives EVERY YEAR we could save as well as 240,000 lives that are drastically ruined. This is impact and you can be a vital part of it. WE NEED YOUR HELP. The next challenge that we want to introduce is that we are completely INDEPENDENT meaning we can do whatever we want. So if you have a cause that you are passionate about then we can help you create change. Is it Clean

Drinking Water? Better Nutrition for Children? Literacy? Child Mortality? Environmental Issues? You want to do it and we can help and will have the access to Rotary International and all its members to help get it done. We do not have to re-invent the wheel. If we have an issue here chances are it has been tackled somewhere else and we can get the resources we need to make it happen. Have you heard of BYE BYE PLASTIC BAGS? They were born out of our Club through our younger Club called Interact which operates at the High School level. So the sky is the limit but the only thing holding us back is YOU. We need YOU to get involved, we need YOU to say enough is enough and it is time to get involved. We need YOU to make the effort and turn off the Netflix and make a CHANGE. We need YOU to rally a few friends and come out and take a stand. I want less people to die every year due to ignorance about Helmets so I did Helmet Man. Do you want to see change? Now is the time and Rotary Club Bali Canggu is the place. We meet every other Tuesday at the Finns Recreation Club in Berawa at 6:30 pm but please feel free to call me directly at 081933079922, or email me directly at chris@balilandoffice.com. We love this World, We love this Country, We Love this Island, and the greatest way to express that Gratitude is to give back to those who have less. Please take this invitation seriously and do the most powerful thing in the world, make a decision to get involved!! There is no greater way to make yourself feel great then to help another, make that choice, make the call, become a Proud Member of Rotary Club Bali Canggu and you will always be glad you did! Thank You so much and I look forward to hearing from you soon! Our Rotary Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the beautiful Hotel Tugu at the end of Jalan Batu Bolong in Canggu. Come along, join our meeting and meet the team! Finding Remote Work, Part Two

Here are eleven more remote job sites: AngelList (https://angel.co) This site lists only jobs with start-ups and currently has 72, 751 positions listed. AngelList has jobs for Data Scientists, Designers, Developers, Hardware Engineers, Human Resources professionals, Marketers, Mobile Developers, Product Managers and Sales Professionals. Creating a profile and browsing and applying for jobs on the site are free for jobseekers. Coworks (https://coworks.com) This site is free to join as a freelancer, and has the added benefit of allowing you to upload a portfolio and You Tube videos, showcasing past work. Coworks offers a full range of business tools, including invoicing and payment processing. Services appear to be free for freelancers, available by subscription for businesses hiring freelancers and the site takes a small processing fee for handling payments. I couldn’t access job listings without setting up a profile, so I’m unsure of the full range of positions available. Europeremotely (https://europeremotely.com) I’m including this site for European remote workers. The site states that it lists jobs ‘that are available to people living in Europe’ and who work on European time zones, but it says nothing about Europeans who are living elsewhere. Check individual job listings for exclusions or eligibility. Guru (https://www.guru.com) Guru is a huge site that claims to have 1.5 million members worldwide, with over 1 million contract jobs completed through the site and over $200 million paid out to freelancers. The job categories on the site include: Web, Software & IT; Design, Art & MultiMedia; Writing & Translation; Sales & Marketing; Engineering & Architecture; Admin Support; Management & Finance; and Legal. While Guru does offer a free basic account, jobseekers are limited to only bidding on 120 jobs per year and must pay a 8.95% fee if they are hired and successfully complete a job. Guru also has a range of paid monthly plans, ranging from $8.95 to $39.95, which includes up to 600 bids per year and lower service fees. Hubstaff Talent (https://talent.hubstaff.com) Hubstaff is a free online resource that matches company job offerings with remote freelance talent. The company makes money by selling a time-tracking service for companies using remote teams and offer the job-matching website as a free service. This is a good job board for writers as a quick search showed postings for blog, article, copy and content writers. A wide range of job types on the site included Sales and Customer Service, Administrative jobs, Consultants, Marketing and Finance jobs, Social Media, Tech and many others.

Jobspresso (https://jobspresso.co) This site offers remote job listings in Content Writing & Editing, Customer Service & Support, Designer & User Experience, Marking & Product Management, Project Management, Sales & Business Development, Site Reliability & DevOps and Software Development. Freelancers can register and search for free on the site, while employers posting jobs pay through a subscription model. C/BS/G-2 August 17

Outsourcely (https://www.outsourcely.com) This site offers jobs in start-up companies, in the areas of Writing & Content, Business Services, Sales & Marketing, Business Services, Mobile Applications, Web Development, Customer Service, Administrative Support and Design & Multimedia. The site is free to use for job seekers; companies must pay to post jobs. Remote OK (https://remoteok.io) Another site with a good listing of mixed remote jobs, Remote OK offers listings in Design & UX, Marketing, Customer Support, Software Development, Finance, Teaching and other fields. On the day I checked, the site had 1,709 non-tech remote jobs listed. Check the dates on the listings, as the site doesn’t remove older postings; I found listings posted six and eight months before, which are likely to be filled. As the jobs are curated from other sites, freelancers will need to click through to the site where the job is posted to apply.

This site carefully curates remote jobs in a wide range of job types, from developers and tech jobs, to customer service and admin roles, to designer, sales, finance roles and others. The site has a good blog packed with solid information for remote workers, as well as a Q & A area where you can post questions and ask established remote workers technical, legal or lifestyle questions about being or becoming a remote worker. As the jobs on Remote.co are curated from other sites, freelancers will need to click through to the site where the job is posted to apply. TopTal Business (https://www.toptal.com) TopTal is a site for developers, designers and finance experts. While TopTal lists jobs for freelancer developers – Python, Ruby, C++, Java and many others – they also list remote work for designers, including web designers, creative directors, graphic designers and product designers. TopTal has a separate category for finance experts, including niches such as Venture Capital Consultants, Market Research Analysts, Real Estate Experts, Blockchain Consultants, Financial Analysts, Part-Time CFOs and Pricing Consultants. The site charges businesses to recruit from their screened stable for freelancers – for job seekers, this means you will need to undergo a screening process to be registered on the site.

Last year, I wrote a column featuring sites that list remote jobs. This column has received the most feedback of any column I’ve written in almost four years. So with the start of 2018, I want to revisit the topic of remote work sites. Although many remote jobs look for tech or IT people, I’ve tried to focus on sites that offer a mix of job types. This list differs from last year’s one. You can access the Social Media Byte archives on the Bali Advertiser website to read the first list.

Add to this the facts that a remote job allows workers to be, well, remote and either work as they travel or base themselves anywhere in the world. Remote.co posted a blog post last year predicting that both freelance agents and remote work niches would continue to grow in number and specialized companies, including remote job boards, would proliferate to serve these niches.

Indeed (https://www.indeed.com) Although Indeed is seen as one of the big conventional job boards for geo-physically based jobs, increasingly the site offers more and more remote work. A quick search on the site turned up 1,724 listings that were remote, although many of these will still be US or Western-hemisphere-based remote jobs, not globally based, or need workers to be available during US business hours. The site is free to use for job seekers.

Studies estimate that within ten to fifteen years, a third to a half of office workers will be working from home or remotely. In addition, Stanford University research shows that remote workers are almost 15% more productive than their office-based counterparts, and businesses are taking note of this fact.

Reviews that appear in Bali Advertiser are based on actual visits to the establishments listed, without the knowledge of the restaurants, and are not paid for by the individual restaurants. Opinions expressed here are those of Gerry Williams and not necessarily those of Bali Advertiser. Gerry Williams attempts to write from a ‘typical’ diner’s perspective and, whilst quality of food is the most important criteria overall, value for money is the real measuring stick.

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

Bali – the Culture of Consumption ‘Consumption’ here refers to the literal translation of the Indonesian word, konsumsi: food or drink provided for participants or guests at any given occasion. Every and any occasion in Bali is an excuse for konsumsi, in fact no one would even dare suggest having the smallest meeting, gathering or even music practice without addressing konsumsi. The “need” for konsumsi is actually a cultural rather than literal or logical need (does one really need to be provided with food and drink at a meeting that may last just an hour?). Balinese (and other Indonesians for that matter) are very hospitable people, and providing visitors with food and drink is not only manners but considered essential. This explains why when I’ve visited even the poorest households they make an effort to bring me food and drink. Culturally, Indonesians expect to be served – at a meeting or sports practice they are not used to moving from their seat to help themselves to food or drink that in other countries is presented with no packaging in buffet and dispenser form.

C/E/G-15 March 17

Twenty years ago, konsumsi did not include single-use plastics, nor did organizers include full meals at meetings as they do today. If you’ve ever been to a meeting, a ceremony, even a sports or cultural event here, both governmental or non-governmental, the standard offering for participants is called nasi kotak a cardboard or Styrofoam (God forbid) box the hides an environmental disaster within: a single-use plastic cup of mineral water with a disposable rip-off plastic lid, as well as a single-use straw packaged in a disposable plastic wrapper; a plastic food tray with divisions in it bento-style; peanuts in plastic sachet, and cakes individually wrapped in plastic including often a type of cake that is tied up with a piece of plastic cord called tali rafia. Even at the Indonesian Embassies overseas I’ve visited, I saw that they provide guests with single-use plastics (including cultlery!) too, exporting their own poor waste management habits. Most organizers also do not separate their waste, which means that the leftover food and drink is mixed with non-organics creating a smelly mess that is a disaster for any waste management system. In addition, the culture of consumption leads to not only a lot of food waste but also blows a hole in any budget, including government budgets when it could be used for education, health, infrastructure, or waste management: things that are clearly lacking in this country. So while we are all talking about Bali’s horrendously dirty beaches and waterways, we need to understand culturally that one of the major sources of the problem is the culture of consumption that local leaders need to find eco-friendly alternatives for fast. several warps at a time, instead of over and under one at a time as is usual with plain weave, they are said to float. It is these floating threads that create motifs on a foundation of plain weave. The extra threads are inserted as part of the weaving process, but not necessarily in the making of the cloth. If they were to be pulled out of the weaving, there would still be a piece of woven cloth. The technique is therefore described as supplementary (additional or extra) weft weaving. In some cases, the result can resemble embroidery. The English term for cloth woven with supplementary wefts is in fact brocade. Songket is originally a Malay term not found in many local vernaculars spoken by Indonesian ethnic groups who use other terms to describe the same supplementary weft weaving technique. The floating thread technique is known as songke in Manggarai, Flores, and Bima, Sumbawa, while the Karo Batak call it jongkit. parts still in it. Anthropologists are able to work out the weaving technique that was used just by studying these parts. One can make out in the old black and white vintage photos of somber, unsmiling Sasak, Batak and Moluccan weavers working ramshackle looms, that the women themselves are wearing priceless, irreplaceable fabrics. A few stained and tattered specimens found in private hands are so rare that they are the only ones in existence. The nation’s provincial museums were established after 1950, when some textiles like the pinatikan of North Sulawesi and the kalumpang of West Sulawesi were no longer being produced.

Australia Day Celebration (26 January) Happy Australia Day! For non-Australians who may be unaware, this is a national holiday held to commemorate the founding of the colony of New South Wales in Australia on 26 January 1788. Now it has become a day to reflect what it means to be Australian and to celebrate contemporary Australia and acknowledge their history. It is about all things Australian, a sense of fair go, lifestyle, democracy, freedom, land and the people. Australia is worthy of celebration and if you haven’t visited Australia it is a must, diverse, stunning, contrasting and vast. There are several Australia day celebrations and the Bali Beach Shack comes highly recommended. Aussie owned, it is a family restaurant and bar with quality food, reasonable prices and great entertainment which means a great place to be for Australia day celebrations. It would be nice to have a national holiday in Bali to celebrate with our neighbours down under! The drag shows are also worth checking out at weekends too.

Australians briefly detained over Bali volcano climb

Two Australians were briefly detained by Indonesian police yesterday for climbing to the summit of a rumbling volcano on the holiday island of Bali, hours before authorities shrunk an exclusion zone around the belching crater. Ricky Tonacia, 34, and Jack Dennard, 26, were questioned by police after flouting a highly publicised danger zone up to 10 kilometres from the volcano. Mount Agung has been periodically spewing molten clouds of ash and smoke for months, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people living nearby – and drawing some foreign thrill seekers eager to climb its peak. Authorities were alerted to the men’s expedition after a nearby military post observed torch light on the volcano around 3am local time yesterday, authorities said. The pair and two Balinese men who drove into the exclusion zone to pick them up were detained several hours later as they attempted to descend the mountain. “We took them to the Selat Police post for questioning,” Captain Wayan Mustika from the Karangasem military post told AFP. “They said the hotel where they were staying told them the volcano is safe. “We released them at 11.25am because there was no criminal offence,” he added. Mustika added that a Russian man was briefly taken into custody after he was caught trying to climb Agung last week. The volcano’s alert level remains at maximum, but the 10-kilometre radius danger zone was reduced to six kilometres by Indonesia’s volcanology centre yesterday afternoon. “Mount Agung is still in the eruptive phase and could impact settlements,” the centre said in a statement. Agung rumbled to life in September, forcing the evacuation of 140,000 people living nearby. [AFP January 5, 2018] Bali declared a “garbage emergency” after tons of trash washed up on beaches If you’ve been to Bali, you’ve noticed the garbage. Bali is, by nearly every sense of the word, paradise. Beautiful beaches, perfect weather, crystal clear water, friendly people, and of course, perfect waves. All of it, however, is marred by the inundation of plastic waste. It’s everywhere-the beaches are covered in it, the roadsides are packed with it, and despite the fact that it’s a very obvious, visible problem, there’s not all that much being done about it.

sand from Bali and Java.

Early in December, things got so bad that the island declared a “garbage emergency.” It’s nothing new, either. With monsoon season comes a rising tide full of incredible amounts of litter. Plastic bottles, diapers, broken flip flops, drinking straws, all wash into the sea and onto the

According to The Telegraph, a stretch of beaches on the west coast of Bali was recently declared an emergency zone after authorities decided that the amount of garbage washing up was hampering tourism. Workers sent to beaches in Jimbaran, Kuta, and Seminyak reportedly spent a few days cleaning up the 4-mile stretch of sand and removed nearly 50 tons of trash a day. “It is awful. People just don’t care, it’s everywhere, it’s everywhere,” Gulang, a hotel worker who declined to give his second name, said to The Telegraph. “The government does something, but it is really just a token thing.” It’s a complicated issue though-although much of the so-called solutions are indeed not much more than lip service, the problem doesn’t stem from Bali alone. Indonesia is the second biggest ocean polluter (after China), and much of the garbage that washes up on Bali comes from the Java Sea. The country doesn’t have an adequate refuse management system, and much of the trash that doesn’t end up in ditches or in the sea is simply burned on the side of the road. Single-use plastics are increasing and there’s nowhere to put it all. The community is aware of the issue, but without major changes at a governmental level, all they can do is pick up the trash and hope for the best. [The Telegraph December 30, 2017] AFL slammed over response to Melbourne player Bali sexual assault complaint The AFL has been accused of failing to take a rape claim against a Melbourne player in Bali seriously. The league has refused to answer questions on whether its Integrity Unit had interviewed the player, or whether it had offered any support to the alleged victim. The case was reported to Victoria Police, which could not investigate because the alleged incident happened in Indonesia. Victorian Centres Against Sexual Assault spokeswoman Carolyn Worth said the league had dropped the ball. “Their protocol should cover overseas incidents,” she said. “There used to be a saying what happens on the road, stays on the road, but given their Respect and Responsibility program that shouldn’t be the case. “Also because they are marketing themselves as family friendly they should be looking at what players do overseas.” Victoria Police received a report on October 2, but it only leaked two weeks ago. The victim was told to report it to Indonesian police, which would have to be done in person in Bali. Bali police said they would investigate if the woman made a formal complaint, but said they didn’t have a report as yet. Melbourne confirmed it had also received details of the complaint, but did not say if it was approached directly. It had passed the matter to the AFL’s Integrity Unit - standard practice under the league’s Respect and Responsibility policy towards women. The AFL has previously taken strong stances against racism and other social issues. Ms Worth said the league should do the same in this case. “I don’t think it’s okay. If it were a racist rant they would have said more about it,” she said. “This is always the case with sexual assault, it’s never treated as seriously as drugs or racism. “It’s the third cab off the rank for the AFL.” Ms Worth said the league would have done more if the incident happened in Victoria. “They wouldn’t think its OK if it happened in Collingwood or St Kilda,” she said. “They need to lift their game.” The Herald Sun sent a list of questions to the AFL about what it was doing, and what it had done in regards to the case. The AFL declined to respond. [Herald Sun January 2, 2018] Police suspect heart attack in sudden death of Australian tourist in a Kuta bungalow A 37-year-old Australian Tourist from Perth, Clinton James Dally, has been found dead in his room at the Matahari Bungalow in Kuta on Saturday, January 6, 2018. Dally had checked into the room with his 29-year-old Balinese companion, Ni Ketut Kartika, earlier that day. During a visit to the Kuta Art Market, the Australian complained to Kartika that he felt unwell, suffering from a headache and stomach pain, and decided to return to his hotel to rest. Members of the hotel staff found Dally unconscious and face down on his bead at 1:00 pm and immediately summoned a doctor to the room. A short time later, a doctor declared the man dead at the scene, presumably from a heart attack. When police examined the room they found a bedside table containing cigarettes, whiskey, and over-the-counter drugs. While police continue to investigate the case, no foul play is suspected as police are proceeding on the theory that the man may have suffered a massive heart attack. Police investigate murder of Chinese tourist in her Bali villa Police continue to investigate the apparent murder of a Chinese tourist who was found dead in her bedroom on the second floor of Villa Ombak in Desa Cemagi, Mengwi on Thursday morning, January 4, 2017 at 3:00 am. The dead woman, Wu Yali (52), was staying at the Villa in the company of her daughter, son-inlaw, a granddaughter and a domestic servant. The woman’s daughter, Ge Qi (32) reportedly discovered her mother’s lifeless body in a pool of blood with numerous stab wounds. Police from the Badung Precinct, backed up by officers from the Bali Provincial headquarters, responded to secure the scene of the crime, to interview those staying in the villa and villa staff, and commence a forensic crime scene investigation. The woman’s body was sent to Bali’s Sanglah General Hospital for an autopsy examination. NusaBali reports that the Chinese visitors had owned the villa. The female domestic helper told police that she heard voices at approximately 2:40 am emanating from the dead woman’s room. Because the language used was Chinese, the maid could not tell police the content of the conversation. Moreover, she told police she could not definitely confirm if a second voice was involved. Frightened to leave her room on the lower floor of the villa, the maid said she heard a crashing sound at around 3:00 am of something falling – a sound that caused most staying in the villa to awake. Shortly thereafter, the woman’s daughter screamed when she found her mother’s lifeless body in her room. Police say none of the woman’s valuables appeared to be missing from her room, minimizing robbery as a possible motive for the crime. Police have collected a great deal of forensic evidence, including fingerprints and foot prints from the crime scene that they continue to investigate. The family group had moved into the villa on December 1, 2017, after the villas was purchased in November 2017 from its former owner, an Italian named Jonathan. Forensic doctors at Sanglah Hospital say the woman was stabbed 4 times in her chest with one fatal stab wound puncturing the woman’s heart. Signs were also found indicating the woman fought her attacker with wounds on her arm and hands. Police continue to investigate the homicide. [www.balidiscovery.com January 7, 2018] Indonesia reduces exclusion zone around volcano Mount Agung Indonesia’s government said on Thursday that it has reduced the size of the exclusion zone around the volcano Mount Agung on the island of Bali to 6 kilometers (3.7 miles), which will allow thousands of the 71,000 who had earlier been evacuated to return home. Agung is still in the eruptive phase with relatively high volcanic activity and fluctuations, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources spokesperson Agung Pribadi said in a statement. Since the eruption alert level of Agung was raised to the maximum in September, volcanic activity has caused losses worth $820 million, according to data from the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management. Of the total loss, some $670 million is attributed to the tourism sector, while the rest is mostly due to the evacuation of residents from the surrounding areas. Agung began a phase of volcanic activity on Nov. 21, 2017, which forced the closure of Ngurah Rai international airport, located 60 kilometers to the south of the volcano, between Nov. 27 and 29 due to a cloud of smoke, which affected more than 100,000 passengers. More than 5 million foreign tourists flew to Bali in 2017, according to the airport authorities. Located in the east of the island, in the district of Karangasem, Mount Agung is far from most tourist attractions. Mount Agung is erupting for the first time since 1963, when the ejection of magma lasted almost a year and caused more than 1,100 deaths. The Indonesian archipelago sits within the socalled Ring of Fire in the Pacific, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity that is shaken by thousands of tremors every year, mostly small in magnitude. [Latin American Herald Tribune January 8, 2018] Romantic boyfriend proposes in mid-air on Bali flight Mark Wadson, 30, asked another passenger to film the moment he asked his now fiancé, Miranda Naprelac, 22, to marry him. A flight attendant can be seen calling Miranda to the front of the plane to wish her a happy birthday. But this was a decoy, Mark had planned it out perfectly and with hundreds of people looking at the pair, he got down on one knee and popped the question. Miranda can be seen in complete shock as she says ‘yes’ and kneels down to kiss her new fiancé. The pair who got engaged on January 2 haven’t stopped smiling since and are currently enjoying a holiday in Bali, Indonesia. Mark, a store manager from Perth, Sydney, said: “Me and the flight attendants organised that I would go to the bathroom and they would call her to the front and sing her happy birthday. “They then asked her who she was travelling with and I would appear from the bathroom and proceed with asking Miranda to marry me. “She was so shocked but we’ve both been happier than ever since it all happened. “We always knew our connection was something more than anything we had felt before and we firmly believe that this was and is the true definition of soulmates. “We are so happy to have the opportunity to share our love and story.” [Trend Media January 8, 2018]

Fake News Lah

by Ines Wynn

Donald Trump mendaciously claims he coined the expression ‘fake news’. Actually the term has been in use since the 1890s by the American press and is not a new concept. But with all the wolf cries about fake news since the advent of the Donald on the political scene, the expression has gone viral, expressly so because the POTUS himself partakes in fake news, either as a giver or a taker. What is fake news and how do you recognize it? Wikipedia terms fake news a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate misinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media. The intent of fake news is to mislead in order to damage an agency, entity, or person, and/or gain financially. Simply put, it is news that is wrong, out of context, exaggerated, not verifiable. Fake news is the sibling of the gutter press of days past and present, an entity that thrives on sensational titles, overblown claims and over-sentimentalised stories. The phenomenon of fake news seems to proliferate in the areas of politics, health, the environment and natural disasters, celebrities and ‘high’ society, and the realm of conspiracy theories. It’s a rich domain that perks up the interests of a broad and diversified audience. There are well-known purveyors of fake news like Liberty Writers News, Last Line of Defense, Breitbart, Infowars, Fox News and like ilk. Then there are also the spoof-news websites like The Onion and the Australian Betoota Advocate whose content is mainly satirical and publish totally made-up news. They do it for fun, to entertain, attract attention and to be the voice of disenchantment with mainstream media. You also need to beware of fake news items spread by gullible friends and relatives. Remember that fake news spreads lightningly fast on social media posted by ordinary people. A recent example of that are people who comment on the threatening eruption of Bali’s Mount Agung by posting a picture of Sumatra’s Mount Sinabung or other volcano in full eruption without specifically identifying the difference. Examine the motivations of people spreading fake news: it could be to advance their political or ideological cause; out of malice to sully the reputation of a person, public figure or group. It could be for money as sensationalist content can engender clicks to add revenue to the poster’s site. It could also be due to seek attention or that feeling of importance, of having an impact. Then there are the pranksters who thrive on tasteless jokes and the nitwits who blithely pass on juicy news without examining the source. Why do readers get roped into believing these claims? Maybe they hope the information brings a solution to a problem they have, or it gives solace and comfort, or enforces their belief system. President Obama, in a December 27th 2017 BBC Radio interview with Prince Harry who is guest editor for the “Today” program, summed it up very nicely when he said that one of the dangers of the internet is that people can have entirely different realities. They can be cocooned in information that reinforces their current biases.

How to spot fake news stories: • Beware of posts and photos that cause an immediate emotional reaction, especially if provocative. Beware sensationalised or outrageous claims like ‘Lemon Juice is the Ultimate Cancer Cure’. Take conspiracy theories with a mountain of salt. Explore the claims with a critical sense and check reliable sources. • Read the whole text, not just the title. Beware the come-ons and the bait and switch techniques to draw you in. Be suspicious if the posts looks dubious or questionable, over-hyped or contains unverified or unverifiable claims. Grammatical errors are a dead give-away, not just in the spam emails from Nigerian royalty. • Identify the author: is it a well-known journalist or a press agency like Associated Press, Reuters, etc.? A reputable academic or NGO entity? A government agency without an axe to grind? Are mainstream media including it? • Google all claims; check those sources and facts; find proof in recorded speeches, official statistics, published research or white papers. Check cited sources, people or publications: are they direct quotes, second or third hand? Quotes, if legit, can be tracked back to an actual event or statement. • Look at the URL. A legitimate website like abcnews.com can be usurped by a fake news website and renamed like abcnews.com.co. Anything that ends with a suffix other than com, net or org should be approached with caution. • Remember that syndicated news sites and opinion websites are almost always slanted. • As for photos, check the URL in Google Images to see where the image originates from and where else it has been used. Remember that programs like Photoshop are a favorite of online fake news purveyors. Consult legitimate checking tools. There are authorities on fake news and entire websites who make it their business to expose the interlopers. You can consult fact checking sites of major media or independent, non-partisan sites: • Politics: fastcheck.org and politifact.com • General scams: snopes.com • Email and FaceBook scams: truthorfiction.com and hoaxslayer.com For an in-depth discussion on this and related topics you can read Daniel J. Levitin’s very insightful book entitled Weaponized Lies: Critical Thinking in the Post-Truth Era, available on Amazon. If some of your dear friends or family members get carried away with spreading what you consider fake news, you can gently challenge them about their back-up facts. A lot of times you will find they have posted a news item impulsively, without verifying the truth of the claim. As for the Mount Agung situation in Bali, do take all those breathless posts and comments with a grain of salt and go directly to the horse’s mouth. The legitimate source for this is the National Disaster Management Agency who posts very lucid and objective updates. Always go the source… C/He/G-17 Jan. 18

30 HEALTH CHECK-UP WITH THERMOGRAM It’s the beginning of the year and many people make a New Year’s Resolution to be healthier for the coming year. A good way is to have a health check-up and see if there are any potential problems lurking in your body. This way if you know about them early you can take action and hopefully avert any threat to your health. One great way is by using modern scientific technology to detect health concerns with the AlfaSight Thermodiagnostics.

The diagnostic results are displayed for every part of the body:Head, neck, chest, upper abdomen, lower abdomen, kidney/ back, cubital fossae, dental and breast. For each area indications of any disorder is shown on the test results. There’s also scans of the body in vivid colors, dental screen for each of the teeth which relates to body parts. Also coloured bar charts of the various body parts. The results are able to detect early signs of possible cancer indicators. This is a great alternative to mammogram for breast cancer detection.

The AlfaSight Thermography is a diagnostic tool that uses infrared measurements of skin temperatures from 90 – 120 body points and comparing the temperatures before and after exposure to a cool room temperature. The skin temperatures determined by influences of the nervous systems’ innervations to the capillary beds constrict or dilate in response to the cool air.

Indications for Use 1. Abnormalities of the female breast 2. Peripheral vascular disease 3. Musculoskeletal disorders 4. Extra-cranial cerebral and facial vascular disease 5. Abnormalities of the thyroid gland 6. Various neoplastic and inflammatory conditions Evaluate Whole-Body Physiology

• A functional test based in thermoregulation • Assesses regulation capacity of all organs, glands and lymph • Over 40 signature patterns of diseases processes are rated and prioritized • Integrative analyses of: • Breast Health (12 criteria) • Prostate Health (9 criteria) • Dental Health

As the nervous system reacts to the cool air, analogous to the “fight or flight” reaction, signals travel from the spinal cord through the regional nerve ganglia that innervate the organs of that region. They continue to the skin’s capillary beds, where temperatures providing organ and tissue health information can be measured. The AlfaSight measures the differences between the two temperatures taken before and after the cool air exposure. This data is compared by AlfaSight to a database of healthy patients and reveals deviations that identify patterns that is reflected in easy to understand charts and reports. The AlfaSight scan is painless and noninvasive. It’s conducted in a cool room using a wand that is held over the points on the body. These points are shown on a computer-like screen to conduct the testing. A quiet beep signifies that the equipment has registered the measurement. The whole process only takes about 30 minutes including a 10 minute cool down wait between the two scans. Right after the scan the nurse prints out the seven page results, which the practitioner will then sit down with you to discuss. The discussion can take up to an hour to discuss the prognosis and what is recommended to treat the symptoms. He may suggest diet changes or supplements to rebalance your body. At the beginning of last October I was concerned about a calcification on my breast. Doctors advised having a biopsy. Yet I was hesitant to do so. Instead Nigel, head of Ayusha Wellness suggested having a Thermogram scan instead. Anything non-invasive sounded preferable. The scan I had last October revealed that the calcification was benign and I was advised by the doctor not to have a biopsy as this could provoke the cells and possibly turn it into cancer. That was a great relief. However, the scan did show some other health concerns that could be dealt with by taking supplements and a change in my diet. The doctor said that all could be reversed within two months by making these changes. That sounded very promising. I made the changes to my diet like eliminating soy products because they raised my bad estrogen levels, reduce carbs and purchased a multitude of supplements to improve my health. I had a quite a bit of inflammation in my throat and upper chest. I was feeling good and positive about these changes. The scan results suggested which supplements I should take to balance my body.

In mid- December I returned for a follow-up scan. The results showed that there was improvement to my breast concern and most of the inflammation in my throat and upper chest had cleared up. There were also some other positive improvements. However, because I had undergone surgery the previous month and had to stop taking the supplements my body was dealing with removing the excess toxins from the anesthetic, antibiotics and pain killers. In other words, my immune system was compromised by the toxins stored in my body from the medication. I needed to continue with the supplements and add a lymphatic enhancer tonic to detoxify. Nigel suggested having lymphatic drainage massage also to flush out my system. He also suggested having an endocrine level test taken to find out what was going on with my thymus and why I still had a bit of inflammation in my throat.

C/He/I-20 Dec 17

The important point is that the AlfaSight clearly showed changes and I could see that the equipment really does work. Nigel told me that the machine has become very popular in Jakarta at his retreats with many women coming for early breast cancer detection rather than having a mammogram. I fully agree and would prefer having this scan than an uncomfortable mammogram that exposes my body to radiation. Say What? Question: I have a hard time understanding foreign accents, and I don’t know how to address the issue without making it super awkward. My landlady is Indonesian, and I sometimes I have a hard time understanding her English due to her heavy accent. Asking over and over for clarification clearly frustrates her and makes me look stupid. “I don’t understand what the problem is,” she tells me, “This isn’t hard to understand.” Only it is! Asking her to put her requests in writing seems rude and obstructionist -- moreover, her written English is almost as difficult to understand. So I’m in a bind, in which it feels as if I have to be handheld through any instructions she gives me. I’m hoping you may be able to suggest something more effective than my saying: “I need you to slow down and use simple words because your English skills do not match your bahasa Indonesia skills.” Dr. ZZ: Let’s give this a bit of a different spin. When Brits, Aussies and Americans speak English, for example, all are speaking their own native language, yet all speak it differently. So regardless of your country of origin, you too technically speak English with what some would consider “an accent.” You can get better at understanding other people’s accents and can accustom your ear to the various cadences through the practice of repetitive listening. When speaking with a person with an accent, it is important to relax when you listen. Tension, resentment, and worry that you’re not understanding serve only to interfere with your listening and understanding. When interacting with your landlady, it may be helpful to have a notebook handy and to write down what she says. Tell her you sometimes have trouble with listening comprehension, and ask her to repeat more slowly what she wants you to do; so that you can write it down. Then, after the conversation, sit with what she told you to do, and take a basic crack at doing it. If after you’ve tried to follow her instructions, you can’t

figure them out, perhaps you can email her with questions about the substance of the conversation (ex., “I got started on what we spoke about. Just to review, I’m going to x, y, z and then..whatever you discussed”), not about the parameters (i.e., questioning what it is exactly she wants you to do). That way, if you need to ask her to repeat herself, you are doing it from a level of actually having attempted to follow directions and have run into a snag; you’ll hopefully be asking targeted, less offensive questions this way. Question: I read your column regularly and am clearly in need of advice. I have a lovely friend who is kind, caring and really there for me when it works for him, but he is also incredibly self-centered. He never meets anyone else halfway, let alone on their terms. It’s his way or no way at all. He consistently can’t make it to my place when I invite him. When I am at his house, he continues about his day as if I weren’t there, fixing his bicycle, answering emails, playing guitar and whatever - even if I’m dying of boredom. He’s fine if I leave, and if I want to see him at all it’s 100% on his terms: his place, his schedule, his choice of activity. (“No I won’t go get coffee with you and chat, but you can watch me play guitar.”) He also cannot take criticism of any kind. To him, even a disagreement or a difference in preference is a personal attack. So, I find myself biting my tongue around him and

NC/Es/17 Jan. 18

apologizing a lot. It’s getting to the point of being almost too stressful to handle, but I feel as if I don’t want to cut ties with him because it would decimate my already minuscule number or friends. I recently dropped another friend from my life for similar behavior, and I don’t want to cut this person out of my life as well. He can be a better friend than most when it suits him. I just have no idea how to deal with this, and I’m at a loss to figure out how to make this livable. Thank you so much! Dr. ZZ: Nothing says you can’t remain friends with this person as long as you accept that the friendship must take place 100% completely on his terms. You don’t have to drop him from your life, but you do have to practice needing very little from him, to accept that he’s limited in what he can give you. When you hang out with him, you will do so at his place, on those rare occasions when his self-centered ways amuse and comfort you. You can spend the evening listening to him play guitar and agreeing with everything he says -- unless you’re in the mood for a tiresome argument. On all other nights of the year, you get to spend whatever energy and love you would normally pour into maintaining and deepening a friendship with him into making new friends who are actually interested in things about you, and who can maintain a basic level of reciprocity. Moreover, when you say to this fellow, “Let’s hang out,” and he says, “Come over, and I’ll play my guitar,” you can always continue offering to go for a coffee only to have him refuse. At that point, practice saying, “Sorry, maybe next time.” It’s bound to feel uncomfortable at first, but it will feel more normal with time, and you’ll eventually start feeling better having this boundary on your side of the equation.

Dr. ZZ has a Ph.D. in Counseling and a doctorate in Natural Healing. Drawing on a background of over thirty years as a professional therapist, she offers self-help in the areas health, relationship and personal growth.
