4 Help my cat can’t pee! Feline urethral obstruction explained Firstly let’s be crystal clear on this – a cat that can’t pee is going to die unless immediate veterinary care is sought. Urethral blockage is one of the most common feline emergencies that we see at Sunset Vet and therefore it is vital that cat owners are aware of this condition and can identify it early when it happens, before it is too late. As an anatomical reminder, one of the jobs of the kidneys is to filter unwanted toxins from the blood and pass this waste product, via the ureters, into the bladder for excretion via urination. Once the bladder has filled up enough, receptors in the bladder wall send a signal to the brain that the animal needs to pee, and the bladder muscle contracts to push the urine out through the urethra (via the penis in males and the vagina in females). If the urethra becomes blocked and the animal is unable to pee, not only is it excruciatingly painful but it will also result in a dangerous build-up of electrolytes and metabolic byproducts that result in multiple organ failure. Whilst the kidneys will be severely damaged by the backing up of urine and resulting ‘azotemia’ (medical terminology for increased urea levels in the blood), the most dangerous effect of a urinary blockage is the effect of the build-up of potassium on the heart. High levels of potassium in the blood cause the heart rate to slow down and will eventually lead to cardiac arrest. Dogs can also present with urinary blockages, but it is much more common in male cats, largely due to the narrowing of the urethra when it bends sharply around the penile bone. For simplicity this article will focus on the phenomenon of urethral blockages in male cats. How does the urethra become blocked? 1. the formation of a urinary mineral stone (‘urolith’) in the bladder which is then peed out into the urethra and gets lodged on the way 2. the formation and lodging of urinary grit/sludge, or a mucosal plug secreted from an inflamed bladder wall or urethral lining 3. the formation of a blood clot resulting from bleeding within the urinary tract 4. the development of a urethral stricture (essentially scar tissue) which narrows the diameter of the urethra resulting in an obstruction 5. spasm of the urethral muscle, which can also narrow the urethral diameter 6. a tumour arising either from within the urethra itself or from a structure surrounding the urethra which compresses it from the outside Are all cats at risk of this condition? Although all male cats (and dogs) can potentially develop urethral obstruction, there are a number of predisposing factors that make it more likely. • Male cats are at higher risk than female cats, due to the sharp bend of the urethra at the base of the penis • Overweight cats are at greater risk • Cats that eat only or mostly dry food are at greater risk than those that eat exclusively wet food (wet food increases the water intake; however wet food only has other negative effects such as dental disease so it’s a trade-off) • Cats that have previously had a urethral obstruction are at increased risk of obstructing again, especially if their diet has remained the same • Cats with recurrent cystitis (bladder wall inflammation) are at increased risk of urethral obstruction. • Stress (e.g. moving home, home renovations, new baby, stray cat in your garden etc) also increases the risk of urethral obstruction.
• Neutered cats and those that are indoor-only also appear to be at greater risk, though this could be linked to the greater likelihood of obesity in cats following sterilisation C/G/I-25 Oct 17
How do I know if my cat has a urethral obstruction? The clinical signs your cat shows depends largely on how long it has been blocked for. The earlier you recognise it and intervene medically, the better chance of a complete recovery, the less pain your cat will go through and the lower your vet bill will be! Here we list the signs in more or less early to late order. • Frequent trips to the litter box, • Straining to pee for a long period of time • Straining to pee but nothing coming out, or just a few spots • Being more vocal than usual, constant meowing • Licking their penis excessively • Loss of appetite • Drinking more than usual all of a sudden • Vomiting • Signs of abdominal pain, such as crying when you pick them up or showing aggression that is out of character • Hiding • Collapse • Becoming comatose Remember, a cat can die if it is has an untreated urethral obstruction for just 24 hours! Unfortunately there are no ‘home remedies’ for this condition, so a trip to the vet is an absolute must. What will happen at the vet if my cat has urethral obstruction?

Firstly the vet will want to confirm that this is indeed a blocked bladder. A gentle palpation of the abdomen will reveal usually a rock hard grapefruit sized bladder, as sure sign of urethral obstruction. Your cat will likely need to be hospitalised for several days in order to unblock it as the goal is not only to empty the bladder but also to stabilise the cat, treat the acute kidney failure and potentially life threatening increased potassium in the blood, identify why it blocked in the first place and remove that cause if for example it is due to a bladder stone. Usually a short acting sedative is given, and the vet will pass a urinary catheter up the penis, suturing it in place with a closed collection system. The bladder is flushed and samples are taken to look for crystals. Xrays may be taken to identify bladder stones, and if they are present, surgery may be required to remove them.

How did the industrialization of agriculture cause a cornflake revolution, is it linked to patriarchal society and do I really have artificial fertilizer running around my veins? A Herb Is What You Make It! ‘Dear Garden Doctor, I’ve finally relented and got this idea to join in with those hipsters types and grow some herbs. Just wondering if there is any real difference between a herb and a vegetable? I want to grow a simple herb garden to use in the kitchen mainly for convenience and a bit of fun. I live in two storey townhouse/apartment on a small block, we have a small patch of lawn but not any substantial space for a large scale vegetable or herb garden. Wondering what is best to grow for herbs in pots on the upstairs balcony, maybe in the entrance patio too or even on the windowsill if possible. Many thanks in advance. Timo’ What is a Herb? I’m still trying to figure out the answer to that question after all these years! What defines a herb is often a topic of conjecture, confusion and debate between gardeners, cooks and medicine men/ women alike. Technically anything edible from a plant could be considered a vegetable, whether fruits, leaves, roots, bulbs, or grains. From a biological perspective a strict definition views a herb as a herbaceous plant that has leaves and stems that run to seed and die down at the end of the growing season. Yet from a practical perspective herbs are often defined by how they are used. Generally, in culinary pursuits herbs are thought to be used as a complement to a main ingredient, as a flavour enhancer or to give aroma to a dish. Alternatively, in a medicinal sense they may be the one and only main ingredient by way of seeds, flowers, stems, roots and leaves. Living out in in the garden a herb may even be thought of as a plant that simply deters pests. Muddying the waters further herbs are often made into teas such as chamomile, ginger, peppermint etc which are technically not teas at all, but tisanes! Talk about blurred lines and grey areas. In a culinary sense it is generally accepted that herbs are primarily used to flavour food whereas a vegetable is eaten
as one of the main ingredients. So the parsley in your pasta sauce would be considered a herb, yet when you use it to make tabouleh it becomes a vegetable. Dandelion root could be thought herbal in a tea, yet those same leaves in a salad then become a vegetable, and then over at my neighbour’s garden that same dandelion is considered a weed - in the end its often nothing more than a cultural difference. Some consider a tomatoe a fruit whilst others say it’s a vegetable, tomato/tomatoe… ‘Lets call the whole thing off!’ Let’s just say a herb is in the eye of the beholder, a herb is what you make it, for me it is an easy to grow aromatic plant, that attracts bees, can have attractive and aromatic flowers, can be made into a tea, can be used medicinally internally or externally, is good for health, assists with illness/ailments, and adds flavour and aroma to cuisine. Growing herbs Most herbs as we think of them in the typical sense are hardy and will generally tolerate a wide variety of growing conditions from shade to full sun, meaning they usually require less effort for success than plants grown strictly for their fruits and vegetables. One of the best things about gardening with herbs is the diverse range to choose from along with their versatility - with interesting foliage, aromatic flowers, shrubs that can be hedged such as rosemary or lavender, low growing groundcovers like thyme and oregano, elongated grasses or stalks such as lemongrass and ginger, or even plants that will just run wild all over the place such as peppermint, lemon balm or even parsley - but most importantly all of these can easily grown in pots. There is always room for a few herbs in the garden, because they are easily grown in small spaces and pots. They are amenable to a wide range of growing conditions. Most herbs just need partial to full sun with a free draining soil. The bushy/ grassy types such as rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, chives and spring onions will do better with more sun, but things such as mint, parsley, oregano, dandelion, basil, coriander, sage and thyme will do well enough in filtered light to shady situations which are all suited to balcony and window sill locations. Radishes are easy to grow in planters, pots or direct into the garden. Very rewarding to grow as they germinate quickly and the bulbs grow rapidly, smaller varieties such as cherry radishes being ready for picking within a month from sowing to harvest. Seeds will germinate in a matter of days, a very
rewarding plant to grow, one of the best to start with for a novice that thinks they’re more likely to have a brown thumb as opposed to a green one. The radish tops or leaves can also be added to salads and soups for their subtle peppery flavour, and nothing beats the juicy crunch of a fresh radish straight out of the garden. Parsley is so versatile that I couldn’t have a garden without it. It’s a low maintenance herb, with many culinary uses, looks attractive in a pot and readily self-seeds so that you can have a constant supply. I have seen parsley growing in rock crevices and cracks in the pavement where it found its own way against the odds - its commonly known in some places as ‘rock celery’ for good reason. The advantage of most herbs is that you can have a perpetual supply. Chives and spring onions can be cut down to the soil level for harvest and will shoot back up and regrow in no time at all from the bulb. The same goes for lemongrass which multiples rapidly and should be harvested regularly otherwise it can get out of control. Lemongrass is ideal for Asian cuisine, makes a refreshing tea, is aromatic and thought to repel some pests even possibly mosquitoes, being a source for citronella oil. Lemongrass will do best in a large pot in a sunny spot on the balcony, or straight into the garden. Thyme, oregano, basil, parsley, rosemary, sage etc can be trimmed as needed and will give a constant supply for culinary needs. Plants such as parsley, chives, lemon balm, peppermint and mint can all easily be grown on a window sill in small containers, convenient for garnishing and good for teas or even added to salads for a bit of zing. Most importantly a little herb garden on the windowsill will brighten up any home as well delivering a pleasant aroma. Eating from your own garden is good for your health. Nothing beats the taste and nutritional value of home picked produce, direct from garden to plate. As for the hipsters and herbs, well they were late to the party I must say. Wise old men and indigenous jungle tribes have been growing and gathering them since time began!

Working on my computer in Amed, I looked up to see Mt. Agung shoot out a white plume of steam. Mesmerized, I watched the volcano for the rest of the day. When I needed a break, I went to the kitchen to cook, inspired by the mountain’s energy. I came up with a salad dressing, sauce, and dip all in one. It’s chock full of anchovies, lemon, garlic and olive oil and so yum I was eating it with a spoon. The rest I poured over steamed asparagus. We dipped toasted baguette into the remaining sauce, letting the oil drip down our fingers.
The Anchovy Lover’s Sauce Ingredients:
Makes about 1/3 cup
- 2 Tbl. chopped and mashed canned anchovies - 1 ½ tsp. lemon zest - 2 Tbl. lemon juice - 1 large clove of garlic, pressed or grated - a pinch of cayenne - 4 Tbl. extra virgin olive oil - a few grindings of black pepper Directions: To mash the anchovies put the fillets in a small bowl and chop them with a sharp knife. Then take a fork and mash to a course paste. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, pressed or grated garlic and a pinch of cayenne. Mash this all together until well incorporated. Slowly add the olive oil while whisking with a fork. Let this sit for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld together. The sauce keeps well in the fridge for a week to 10 days. Put it on everything – eggs, salad, veggies, potatoes, or bread. I’d probably skip ice cream though…. Buon Appetito!

16 The Frugal Balinist ✱ Heat Relief. Bali’s dry hot season is May to September with sunny days and an average temperature of 31 degrees C. *Super-economical ceiling fans cost little to run and make the temperature feel as much as four degrees cooler. *Blinds (kerai) are another very effective and easy to install means of cooling down interior spaces. It’s cheaper to order blinds in specific ready-made sizes rather than to have them custom made. Blinds are sold by the square meter, for example 2x200x300, 1x300x300, etc. Try to have delivery and installation charges included in purchase price. *Another way to keep your house cool is to install a water feature. Increasingly popular inside and outside of the home, a fountain or waterfall (kolam hias air mancur) costs anywhere from Rp250,000 to Rp5 million (depending upon size, statuary, lighting, pump systems) in Kapal, east of Kota Tababan. Some are so elaborate that you need to have them built and set up by a tukang batu taman (mason landscaper); other mini ones can simply be put in the back of your car. Working harmoniously with your interior or exterior décor, a water feature according to Feng Shui principles helps reactivate the life-force of the space, restores balance and produces beneficial yang energy. ✱ Home Insurance Reality Check. Indonesians seldom take out fire/home insurance policies; only Westerners seem interested. Most use an insurance broker who will get you competitive quotes, the details of which you can compare and then choose. Allianz (allianz-bali.com) and QBE (www.qbe.co.id) insure against fire and theft, but you have to pay more for earthquake and storm protection. Home insurance can be expensive, so it pays to shop around. Yearly premiums of Rp8,000,000 are par for the course, about the same as you’d pay in Australia. If you include earthquake, it could cost up to Rp12,000,000. Allianz prices homeowner’s insurance with a multiplier of 0.3232 of the value you want to insure while QBE uses a multiplier of 0.2781 of the value you want to insure. Deductibles vary; i.e. flooding Rp25 juta; theft Rp1 juta. All factors are taken into account. There’s a greater risk of fire if you have an alangalang roof and a greater likelihood of storm damage if you have beach or river front property that is exposed to tropical rain storms and coastal erosion. The biggest cause of fire in Bali is poor electrical work. There is limited fire brigade (pemadam kebakaran) protection and even for that you have to pay dearly for in Bali.

✱ Second-Hand Bargains. When a hotel, restaurant or villa renovates, refurbishes, changes owners or is being demolished, second-hand shops (Toko Jual-Beli Barang Bekas or Toko Secon) buy their used or surplus furniture, fixtures, appliances and equipment. These very affordable retail outlets are: 1) the Mutiara Jaya on Jl. Teuku Umar Barat 207 in Denpasar (pictured) across the street from the Wo Aini Javanese food restaurant; 2) Bagus Furniture on Jl. Teuku Umar Barat 10 X, Badung, Kerobokan Kelod, Kuta Utara, Denpasar Barat (tel. 085-236-973-081); 3) on Jl. Gunung Soputan on the same side of the street as Fresh supermarket in Denpasar Barat: 4) Toko Secon in the Abian Tuwung area of Kediri east of Kota Tabanan. These crowded shops are the very best places to buy used but still quite functional cabinets, shelves, benches, tables, lamps, toilets, sinks, stoves, display cases, freezers, refrigerators and TVs at low prices. Brands are often high quality: Toto, Klipsal, American Standard, Jepara carved furniture, etc. Go in the afternoon just before closing when they are more amenable to accepting your offered price. C/BM/G-28 Feb. 18
✱ Your Money. Walk away from any discount offered by individuals approaching you on the street or beach - including innocent looking school girls. Invariably a time-consuming scam. *Using Google Maps with your smartphone to find accurate distances is useful when negotiating taxi and charter vehicle fares. *Always count your money after a transaction to make sure that you’ve been given the right amount of change. *Though you may score a great online deal for a hotel room, if you want to extend another night or two make sure that you receive the same rate and will not be charged the much pricier “walk-in” rate. *Avoid “welcome” drinks that often substitute vodka with cheap rotgut arak as an ingredient. *Minimum monthly wage in Bali is 2.2 million for a full work week (8 hours per day 8 am-5 pm), though you should consider paying 3 million which is still less than $US1 per hour. *To find out employee responsibilities, Google working hours (waktu kerja) under Law No. 13 of 2003 concerning Manpower where you’ll find an English translation. *In Ubud, sign up for the Delta Dewata (Jl. Raya Andong 14, tel. 0361-973-049) frequent shopper card to get points for free stuff like fans, cleaning supplies, water glasses, glassware, frying pans, soap, toothpaste, washing detergent, rechargeable lanterns, etc. *Emas berpeti-peti, kerbau berkandang-kandang. (“Gold in many boxes, buffalo in many stables.”) Though you may have great riches, don’t flaunt your money.
If You Have a Problem with.....
✱ Motorcycle Inspection. At around Rp750,000 per month, the average price of motorcycle rental on Bali, you may be able to haggle a better deal. Before you fork over the money, it pays to give your prospective scooter/motorcycle a thorough inspection. Start by turning it on and giving it a few revs. The engine should sound smooth and regular, and on idle it should be steady. Then flick on the headlights and check that both the regular beams and the high beams work. Then check the indicators, front and back. Next check the brakes. Push the scooter forward and apply the grips, first front brakes (right side) and then back (left side). Back brakes are the most crucial, as you will be using them the most. Check the tire treads, too. Worn tires are pretty usual for Asian scooters, but bald is bad. Although it is rare as a unicorn to find a Balinese bike in mint condition, note any scratches or dents. These demerits are reasons for a discount. Hire a machine with a longer seat like a Honda Vario with a 125cc engine - a must for passengers.
✱ BATI’s appropriate technology. In-ground and above-ground water tanks are life-saving assets to any household or community. For around Rp2.5 million rupiah, a covered cement tank can retain 6,000 liters of rain water or water pumped up from a river, spring or well. Using downspouts (with leaf filters) from gutters, a heavy rainfall can fill a water tank (diameter 2 m, depth 3 m) in less than an hour. *A slow sand filter is an eco-friendly “starter” technology that removes the most harmful organisms and toxins from water. An additional six hours of exposure to the sun by placing the clear water in a transparent glass bottle renders the water totally safe to drink. If installed in the city, these types of filters stop impurities and the smell of chlorine. Anyone who has ever tasted charcoal-filtered spring or rain water will never drink Aqua again. Ubud Area UBUD WATCH YOUR STEP! It’s that time of year again, when the rains have clogged up and damaged major underground drains, in some places also washing away large sections of pavement on Ubud main streets. And a number of significant religious events on our calendar, including the Islamic Ramadan and Idul Fitri, and Hindu Galungan and Kuningan, have meant fewer road workers available for repair work. Those big calendar items are past now, so hopefully the work teams are in catch up mode! In the meantime, watch your step – and I mean every step – as you walk along Ubud’s roads and sidewalks, such as here on Monkey Forest Street, across from Champlung Sari Hotel. GETTING UNSTUCK And then there’s stuck of a different kind … US Psychodrama facilitator Mario Cossa spends his year travelling from country to country, coaching and mentoring counsellors and therapists, using the interactive psychodrama model as this basis for his work. Mario is a very experienced, sensitive and supportive coach, and as his home base is Ubud when he’s not travelling, he’s available for oneon-one Life Assessment Sessions. Do you know anyone who is experiencing career or life transitions, struggling to alter personal unhealthy behaviours or trying to cope with grief and loss? The Rosenthal Miniature Psychodrama Stage process described as “a tiny Family Constellation for one – where you are the puppet master as well as being the star of the show”, is a playful, spontaneous and confidential environment to assess your current position, look at events and people that have shaped you, and think about the choices you might make on your journey into the future. Email: cossa@att.net. NEWS FLASH: REBELS WITH A CAUSE In December, Mario Cossa will hold an intensive threeday workshop exploring the theory, philosophy, and practice of using action techniques such as psychodrama, sociodrama, and drama therapy with adolescent groups. I don’t have details yet, but it will be one of those “once in a lifetime” programs, so if you work with teens anywhere in Indonesia or abroad, register your interest ASAP by emailing cossa@att.net. Update in mid August’s Ubud News column. EXOTIC PHOTO WORKSHOPS If photography seems to be emerging as a passion in your life, grab the opportunity of two extraordinary photo workshop holidays – dedicated to the art of documentary photography coming up later in the year. Led by Ubud-based photographer, David Metcalfe, with Sebastian “Suki” Belaustegui, these Taksu Gallery tours – to Vietnam in September and India in November - will help you delve deeper into your understanding of both portrait and landscape work. Suki has been described as “one of the best portrait photographers on the planet” and has spent the past 25 years in Latin America and Asia capturing the true soul and spirit of the people. David Metcalfe’s decades of work with indigenous people across the Indonesian archipelago are second to none. Vietnam Tribal Cultures And Exotic Landscapes, 22 September - 01 October; Odisha Tribal Cultural Photo Workshop, 23 November - 03 December. More tour info at www.davidmetcalfphotography.com. a day of pouring rain, they raised over 19 million rupiah (about $US1350) for Bali ReGreen, an environmental project working with Mount Agung refugees in dry areas around the volcano. ABBA JAZZ AT BRIDGES
Jazzy times are here again, with Ubud Village Jazz Festival swinging back to town in August for the sixth year in row. From the very beginning, Ubud’s Bridges Restaurant has supported the festival, holding special lunch and dinner events featuring international artists.
This year, they are hosting a Sunday lunchtime “Jazz Tribute to Abba”, with the clear, warm and flexible voice of talented Dutch jazz singer Judith Nijland and her band. There’s no cover charge, just book for a drink or lunch on Sunday, August 12. The restaurant is open from 11am to 3pm; Judith will perform in two sets of 45 minutes each, with the concert starting at about 12.30pm. More info about Judith on her website: www.judithnijland.co. Book soon! It’s a minimum consumption of 150,000rp++ per person on food or drink. EURO SOUND HEALING TOUR
Ubud’s own Sound Healing Collective is preparing for their next European Tour (August to October) is shaping up, including Sweden, Switzerland (Belinzona, Lucerne, Steinen), UK (Chelsea, Camden Shoreditch, Birmingham and Primrose Hill), Holland, Spain (Canary Islands), Norway (Oslo) and Germany (Berlin) so far on the schedule. It’s astonishing to see the success of this group of musicians and healers – Indonesians and international – which has evolved from the first impromptu session here in Ubud just a few years ago. Or is it so astonishing? The world needs healing, individuals need healing; our Ubud has somehow found a very firm place in that healing process, since the first Bali bombing in 2002 forced many of us to place a focus on working together for good.

Jungle Fish, up in the mountains behind Ubud, is a bit cheeky. It calls itself a ‘No Beach Beach Club’. It has been set up to look just like a beach club with cabanas and deck chairs around the large infinity pool, the only thing missing is the beach, ok if you are good at pretending? The all-day menu lists modern pan-Asian and Mediterranean dishes such as Greek lamb wraps, Chicken Curry Quesadillas, Thai fish burgers and pandan crème brûlée. Long breakfasts, lunches and spa treatments. Day, and evening and poolside snacks are the norm. Their Asian and Mezze Platters are very popular with groups. Breakfasts include many dishes with fruit, eggs, cereals, pancakes, and waffles.

Kaum has arrived in Bali. It has been long established in Potato Head Hong Kong and now joins Bali’s Potato Head in Jln. Petitenget. Kuama specializes in local cuisines so here it is totally Indonesian. Entrees such as Lawar Bebek, normally only available in village warungs and at ceremonies. From Aceh, Ayam Berantakam, chicken pan fried with toasted coconut flakes, garlic, curry leaves, oyster mushrooms, and red chillies. Also from Aceh is the spicy gulai Udang, prawns in a sauce that packs a punch! From Maluku is the Gohu ikan Tuna, fresh tuna that has been marinated in coconot oil, calamari and beilimbing. Mains include Beef Sate West Java style, pre-marinated in ginger, garlic, lesser galangal and cracked pepper. Also from West Java is Nasi Lowet Ikan Bumbu Homje, fillets of yellow tail fish tossed with the very spicy ginger sauce and served over baked rice in a claypot.
Ayucious is grand dining, Indonesian style, on Jl. Tantular, Renon. It includes a swimming pool and karaoke room. The cuisine is the normal, a mix of local. International and creations that combine both. Their Nachos use potato chips topped with tomato salsa and cheese. In the Seafood section of their menu [7 Oceans] are listed a few strange options; Beef Stroganoff, Chicken Drumsticks, and Boneless Leg of Lamb as well as seafood such as Salmon with basil, and Singaporean Chilli Crab. Indonesian options include Betutu but with Sambal Matah and a range of Nasi Gorengs, all with different toppings.
Habitat, on Jln. Monkey Forest Road, Ubud, was our Best New Café in 2017. It has gone from strength to strength ever since. They have made the traditional Eggs Benedict their main dish, and keep inventing new variations of same. At one stage they even had one with the poached eggs crumbed. EB is a mainstay breakfast dish but good any time. Habitat is now a regular stopping spot for all Eggs Benedict lovers. NC/R/G-18 July 18

Tasty Indonesian! Warung Damar has replaced Batan Waru at the front of the Bali Garden Hotel on Kartika Plaza [BW has moved to the Lippo Centre 1km away]. Warung Damar is still serving Indonesian cuisine but now under the hotel’s F&B banner, and offering quite a range of traditional dishes [and a few creations] from across the archipelago. Simple dishes are a fetish of mine, as I firmly believe that at a place that can not get the simple dishes right [in too many places they are left to the junior under-trained members of kitchen staff and ruined, even at some 5 star hotels] I have no interest in the more complicated, exotic, and expensive dishes.
either chicken or mixed vegetables in a thin crisp casing, the dipping sauce slightly unusual sweet and sour but with chilli and lime, maybe more Thai than Indonesian but excellent. Soups can be the famous Soto Ayam [shredded chicken, egg, cabbage, vermicelli, potato and sambal in a chicken broth] or the popular Buntut [oxtail], Konro [beef rib] or Sari Laut [seafood, lemongrass and coconut milk]. Ayam Pelalah is described on the menu as a salad but it is one of my favourite Balinese dishes, normally just shredded chicken and finely chopped long beans tossed with chilli and lime. At Damar though it is served more as a western style green salad, with the strips of grilled marinated chicken draped over the top, served with papaya toast. The mains originate from every corner of Indonesia. Rendang from Sumatra [a mild version], the delicate Javanese chicken and potato coconut milk curry, Kare Ayam, from Manado another all time favourite, Ayam Rica Rica, a chicken leg first grilled then simmered in tomato and chilli for those who want a bit of fire in their food. Udang Acar Kuning are giant river prawns, served in a sour yellow curry sauce.

The tastes of Indonesia served at budget prices, but via a modern hygienic kitchen, the service smiling and friendly, all at a level way above the local warung.

DIABETES…..THE MODERN EPIDEMIC Diabetes……Think you’re not at risk? Read on! I was shocked when I read the WHO report on current global trends in diabetes. Diabetes is now the world’s fastest growing disease. Alarmingly, about 50 percent of people with diabetes are not aware they have it. Recent studies have shown that some people suffer from diabetes for up to 7 years without being aware that they have it. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in developed countries and type II diabetes (mature onset) represents about 85 to 90 percent of all cases of diabetes. Early detection and management allows people living with diabetes to enjoy a healthy life.
Symptoms include excessive excretion of urine (polyuria), thirst (polydipsia), constant hunger, weight loss, vision changes, and fatigue. These symptoms may occur suddenly. Type 2 diabetes Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent, or adult-onset) results from the body’s ineffective use of insulin. Type 2 diabetes comprises the majority of people with diabetes around the world, and is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity. Symptoms may be similar to those of type 1 diabetes, but are often less marked. As a result, the disease may be diagnosed several years after onset, once complications have already arisen. Until recently, this type of diabetes was seen only in adults but it is now also occurring increasingly frequently in children. Gestational diabetes Gestational diabetes is hyperglycaemia with blood glucose values above normal but below those diagnostic of diabetes, occurring during pregnancy.
Here are some key facts: • The number of people with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 & has been rising more rapidly in middle- and low-income countries. • The global prevalence of diabetes among adults over 18 years of age has risen from 4.7% in 1980 to 8.5% in 2014. • Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation. • In 2015, an estimated 1.6 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes. Another 2.2 million deaths were attributable to high blood glucose in 2012. What is diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body’s systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels. Type 1 diabetes Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent, juvenile or childhood-onset) is characterized by deficient insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin. The cause of type 1 diabetes is not known and it is not preventable with current knowledge.
Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and at delivery. Gestational diabetes usually goes away once the baby is born however; they and their children are also at increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the future. Gestational diabetes is diagnosed through prenatal screening (a simple glucose screening at 26 weeks), rather than through reported symptoms. Impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glycaemia. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glycaemia (IFG) are intermediate conditions in the transition between normality and diabetes. People with IGT or IFG are at high risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes, although this is not inevitable. What are common consequences of diabetes? Over time, diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. • Adults with diabetes have a two- to three-fold increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. • Combined with reduced blood flow, neuropathy (nerve damage) in the feet increases the chance of foot ulcers, infection and eventual need for limb amputation. • Diabetic retinopathy is an important cause of blindness, and occurs as a result of long-term accumulated damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. 2.6% of global blindness can be attributed to diabetes (3). • Diabetes is among the leading causes of kidney failure (4). How can the burden of diabetes be reduced? Prevention Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective
in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. To help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, people should: • Achieve and maintain healthy body weight; • Be physically active - at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days. More activity is required for weight control; • Eat a healthy diet, avoiding sugar and saturated fats intake; and • Avoid tobacco use - smoking increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Diagnosis and treatment Early diagnosis can be accomplished through relatively inexpensive testing of blood sugar. A simple visit to your local doctor or Prodia lab is all it takes. Interventions that are both cost-saving and feasible in developing countries include: • Blood glucose control, particularly in type 1 diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes require insulin, people with type 2 diabetes can be treated with oral medication, but may also require insulin, blood pressure control & foot care. Other cost saving interventions include: • Screening and treatment for retinopathy (which causes blindness), blood lipid control (to regulate cholesterol levels), screening for early signs of kidney disease. As with so many other things, diabetes can easily be treated and managed IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE IT. If you ignore the signs, it can ultimately be fatal.

Leaders of the Future In this time of chaos occurring around the world, now more than ever we need leaders who can inspire and move us forward into a whole new paradigm that must include saving our planet. I have just returned from Ecuador where I attended the Andes Summit with 10 Shaman masters. It was humbling and enlightening to receive the teachings from the indigenous shamans who are committed to honoring Pachamama (Mother Earth) for all the gifts that she continuously bestows upon us. The Shamans reminded everyone how precious pachamama is and how important it is for us to respect and care for her.
I have never experienced such love for Mother Earth as I witnessed at this summit. People came from all over the world including Estonia, Bali, Australia, USA, Argentina, Canada and the United Kingdom. There were also environmental activists in attendance that came from their villages in the Ecuadorian jungle. They shared their stories with us, making a passionately plea for us to join them in preserving our environment. Many of the activists were young: between 21 – 34

years old. They have been born into a world that is being destroyed, and they will not tolerate this anymore. Thankfully, the new generations are coming into this world with greater awareness and a commitment to living consciously for the greater good.
Consciousness takes on a whole new meaning now that AI (Artificial Intelligence) is rapidly being developed and utilized by millions of people. An example of AI is ‘Apple’s Siri’ which can answer most of your questions, find information on the World Wide Web and even tell you jokes. Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking famously worried that advanced AI will take over the world and end the human race. If robots become smarter than humans, his logic goes, the machines would be able to create unimaginable weapons and manipulate human leaders with ease. “It would take off on its own, and redesign itself at an ever-increasing rate,” he told the BBC in 2014. “Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.” Other predictions are less optimistic. Seth Shostak, the senior astronomer at SETI believes that AI will succeed humans as the most intelligent entities on the planet. “The first generation [of AI] is just going to do what you tell them; however, by the third generation, then they will have their own agenda,” Shostak said in an interview with Futurism.
However, Shostak doesn’t believe sophisticated AI will end up enslaving the human race — instead, he predicts, humans

will simply become immaterial to these hyper-intelligent machines. Shostak thinks that these machines will exist on an intellectual plane so far above humans that, at worst, we will be nothing more than a tolerable nuisance.
So how can we really be of service to our planet in the face of such controversial advancements such as AI? First we need to break free of the trance that most of us are in which has been initiated by the false constructs imposed by our societies. Instead of continuing to buy into the illusion that the material world is what matters, we need to recognize that living consciously is the key to saving our world. This includes how we relate to other people, animals, and our environment and ourselves. We can start by setting our intentions and moving our egos out of the way. This allows us to shift our consciousness and drop deeper into our hearts. As I mentioned in my previous column, the heart is the ‘Wise Mind’ which supersedes our logical brain. If AI does succeed in becoming the primary leader of consciousness, this will be quite dangerous and destructive for humanity.
We have become so distracted by our technological gadgets that we are getting further and further away from our humanness. We have to return to our original natural state which is still, quiet, intuitive and in tune with our environment. In this state, we no longer see ourselves as separate from others, and know that we are connected and part of the collective consciousness. While technology has improved our way of life in many ways, it has played a big part in the destruction and de-evolution of our consciousness. The new young leaders who are emerging understand that for the world to change we must remember and return to our natural state. I have hope that this is still possible, because of the amazing youth that I’ve met in Ecuador, Bali and other countries. But it doesn’t matter whether we are young or old, we can all choose to be a contribution to changing our world. It’s never too late to start.

Tomoka Nguyan is a woman on a mission and it is a big one. Her vision is nothing less than to convert people to using homemade all-natural skin care and to stop buying it from big business. It may take a while but in her view we simply don’t need all the face care we think we do, or rather have been persuaded that we do. “As things are these products are harmful both to ourselves and our environment” she maintains, “they come with packaging that is wasteful and non-degradable. What they do is essentially unregulated, all too often contain toxic chemical ingredients, are over marketed, over-priced and rely on hype and dubious scientific evidence” she concludes. In case you should think that Tomoka is a fanciful dreamer, think again. A beautiful and stylish woman, wife and mother of two, born in Japan, she is a succesful business woman who has been in the vanguard of the spa and beauty movement in Asia since she arrived in Bali in early the mid 1990s. She not only means what she says but has been plotting the way to achieve this vision for seven years now and her book is the first step to show us how it can be done.

Cosmetics contain some 10,500 different chemicals, 89 percent of which have never been tested to see if they are safe to use with such frequency and duration. When you consider that the beauty care industry was worth US$460 billion in 2014 and expected to top $615 billion by 2020 and bearing in mind the lack of regulatory oversight, is it any wonder manufacturers want to keep us in the dark. The profit margins are huge, costs of content and manufacture are very low, as little as 2% of cost. If I have dwelt upon the urgent need Tomoka articulates so persuasively in making the change from commercial products to do-it-yourself 100 percent personalised and all-natural ones it is because the reasons are so compelling. The book is not strident or polemic, this aspect is actually just a small, albeit important part, of what comes across as a very loving and supportive work. Running Remote Conference Explores by Anita Virtual Employment Work culture is changing at a rapid pace. Once a corporate perk, remote work is fast becoming the norm for many companies. Many businesses these days operate from numerous cities, with a mix of local and remote workers spread across different time zones. While remote work is growing in popularity, hiring and managing remote employees comes with its own particular set of difficulties. Running Remote, a two day conference held at the Fivelements resort just outside Ubud last month, brought together over 260 remote team leaders and entrepreneurs from over 20 countries to discuss building, running, and scaling remote teams. “The idea came from the Time Doctor — the people behind software that simplifies managing remote teams — who got frustrated by the lack of information out there on how to effectively run remote companies,” says Steve Munroe, the founder of Hubud, a co-working space in Ubud, who helped to organize the event. “They felt that they had to figure everything out on their own. When they brought the idea of the Running Remote conference to the table, we loved it as we have been supporting remote work through Hubud for over half a decade now.”
Bali is one of the world’s most popular places for destination work. Coworking spaces such as Hubud and Dojo have hosted thousands of remote works in search of work-life balance. As such, it is not surprising that the organizers of Running Remote have chosen to hold the conference on the island. It is also not surprising that the event attracted so many participants, many whom had to put in many plane hours to be here. “I think remote work offers a tremendous opportunity for Bali. It is a popular destination for remote team members who want to spend some time on this beautiful island. It also offers
opportunities to Balinese people to access well paying digital jobs without having to leave home,” Steve says. The conference played host to an impressive lineup of speakers from companies with a remote work focus including Atlassian, GitLab, Doist and TransferWise. Some of the topics covered during the two days included processes and technology for managing remote teams, collaboration tools and techniques, processing payments across countries, hiring the right people, building trust, staying productive, and maintaining the all important work-life balance. Accordingly, while a lot of the sessions addressed the practical aspects of managing a remote team, others focused on topics such as how remote work can move the needle in terms of gender equality and mindfulness at work. In fact, the event ended with what must have been one of the world’s first ever remote meditation session. Arguably, the highlight of the conference was the chat between Joel Gascoigne, the co-founder and CEO of Buffer and Amir Salihefendic, the founder and CEO of Doist. During the session, Joel discussed why Buffer — a remote company with over 70 employees — made the decision to go remote. Amir, meanwhile, talked about why he believes real-time communication may be counterproductive to remote work. With a virtual team of around 60 people, Amir’s company Doist is the mastermind behind Todoist, an app that lets users manage their professional and personal lives across fifteen platforms and in 20 languages. Running Remote also provided a platform for remote team leaders to network and discuss the future of work. As such, lunches and lawn networking sessions, during which the participants were free to mingle over delicious vegetarian fare, constituted a large part of the conference. The postconference dinners also gave participants the opportunity to get to know each other in an informal setting. According
to Steve, most of the conference participants embraced the opportunity to learn from each other. “I think when people have been working on things by themselves, especially trying something new like running remote companies, there is tremendous excitement when you suddenly find yourself in a room with a few hundred others who completely understand you.” Steve says that some of the biggest obstacles to running a remote team that were discussed during the event include poor systems and incorrect mindsets. Many participants were particularly concerned about tracking employee performance, and remote workers’ potential lack of connection with the business and company culture. As such, setting up the right mechanisms for successful communication and ensuring employee involvement were some of the recurring topics throughout the event. “If your company does not have good systems in place—including staff on-boarding, project management and internal communication—those flaws become much harder to hide in a remote company. You need to have your house in order,” Steve says. “In terms of mindsets, running a remote team does require a major shift in thinking and practices so it takes a new way of thinking to adjust to this model of working.” And perhaps the biggest question on everybody’s lips, why no remote Running Remote conference? “As every remote company learns, face-to-face interactions are sometimes very beneficial. As this was the first conference of its kind, we wanted to do it in cooperation with the remote community and enjoy Bali at the same time,” Steve says. “This event will definitely be held again in 2019. We are still exploring location options but Bali is definitely in the running.” Hubud - https://hubud.org Running Remote - https://runningremote.com

Massive fire rips through Bali port
A massive fire laid waste to dozens of boats at a Bali port on Monday (July 9) as firefighters battled to bring the dramatic blaze under control. The fire started around after midnight on the Indonesian holiday island and quickly engulfed nearly 40 local vessels but no injuries were reported, police said. “So far there are no casualties,” Bali police spokesman Hengky Widjaja said. Images from Benoa port, which sits next to the popular tourist hub of Kuta, showed flames shooting into the night sky and huge plumes of black smoke. [Channel News Asia July 10, 2018]
‘Chaotic parking system’ compounding factor in devastating Bali harbor fire, police deepen investigation into cause The raging fire at Bali’s Benoa Harbor burning tens of ships was declared “extinguished” yesterday afternoon, but the flames unfortunately came rip-roaring back that same evening. The effort to fully put the fire to rest is such a struggle because the burning vessels are made of fiberglass and the presence of diesel in the burning ships isn’t exactly making things easier, says Bali Police Chief Insp. Gen. Petrus Golose. “Every ship is filled with diesel fuel, so it’s very difficult to extinguish (the fire),” Golose said on Monday, as quoted by Detik. As of Tuesday morning, a total of 40 fishing boats in the South Denpasar harbor have caught fire and the flames persist. Compounding the fact that the boats are highly flammable is the chaotic parking system at the port, according to Bali Police. There is not a good safety system in place at the harbor for parking, they told reporters yesterday. Many boats parked at the harbor are not “active” and are simply anchored in Benoa, head of Benoa Port Operations Head Dwi Yanto. There are so many because of heavy fishing regulations, he explained. “So these boats fall under a moratorium under fisheries regulations,” Yanto said Monday afternoon, as quoted by Tribun Bali. Ideally, according to SOP, the boats should not be parked three in one line, but for some of them, crew have not yet returned home from the Lebaran holiday yet so the boats have not been operating as usual. Of the 40 vessels reportedly burned, only around 10-15 of them were active, Yanto said. He also said that the port is actually overrun and does not have the capacity to accommodate the current number of ships docked there. And of the burned boats, all are just from three companies, with PT Banjar Nelayan suffering the biggest losses, he added. Traffic is being directed to the western corner of the harbor so as not to disrupt the flow of the rest of the port. Water Police say they will conduct training with representatives from the fishing companies at the port to teach them how to better deal with fires in the future. While police are still investigating the cause of the massive fire, which first broke out on Monday morning around 2am, they suspect the fire emerged as a result of a short circuit on one of the fishing boats. Losses from this fire are estimated to amount to hundreds of billions of rupiah. This is not Benoa’s first fire in recent time. There was one in January 2017, though it was not nearly as destructive. Residents along rivers warned after Mt. Agung eruption Authorities have issued warnings to residents living along rivers that flow from Mount Agung in Bali, as well as residents living around the volcano, to be more careful in the wake of the latest eruption, which occurred on Monday morning. According to Bali Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD Bali), Mt. Agung erupted on Monday at 11:20 a.m. local time. During the eruption that lasted for over two minutes, the volcano spewed a 2,000-meter-high ash column and thick smoke into the sky that later headed westward. “Residents residing and conducting activities along rivers that flow from Mt. Agung should watch out for the threat of volcanic mudflows, which can occur during rain if the volcanic material is still present on the peak around the volcano,” the agency warned in a statement. BPBD Bali also warned residents as well as tourists to avoid climbing the mountain or being within a 4-kilometer radius of the top of Mt. Agung. The danger zone, the agency added, could change from time to time according to conditions on the mountain. Rare Sumatran tiger triplets born at Bali Zoo Three Sumatran tiger triplets were born at the Bali Zoo on Tuesday evening. Not only are the cubs absolutely adorable, but their birth is a big deal in species conservation, marking the first case of successful breeding of the critically endangered feline on the Indonesian island. The cub trio, two males and one female, entered the world at 5pm yesterday, according to a spokesperson from the zoo. The triplets are the first generation of successful breeding from parents, five-yearold Sean and three-year-old Pandeka. The tigers were all born healthy, as concluded by a team from the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) Bali and Gianyar Regency Conservation Team II. The cubs were given a general check-up, their first round of vaccinations, and were microchipped. The triplets will be under intensive monitoring and care from a team of vets at the Bali Zoo. With the addition of these new tiger kiddos to their parents, there is now a total of five Sumatran tigers at the Bali Zoo. “The birth of these three Sumatran tiger cubs shows the success of the Bali Zoo as a conservation institution in the endeavor of preserving endangered species, since according to data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature, there are only 400 Sumatran tigers still alive in Indonesia,” Bali Post quoted the zoo’s spokesperson as saying. The skies over Bali’s beach resort Sanur were a riot of color during the annual kite festival on the Indonesian island on Sunday. Held on farmland near the beach on the tourist island’s southeast coast, the festival attracted hundreds of people over the weekend. Groups of competing revelers in team uniforms from all age groups made their own traditional kites – some small, and some many meters long. Many of the kites were made in colors representing incarnations of Hindu deities Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The annual festival is a popular tourist attraction. Bali is a predominantly Hindu island in Indonesia, which is home to the world’s largest Muslim population. [Latin American Herald Tribune July 10, 2018]

Surfers have been banned from accessing the ultra-consistent, world-class reefbreak at Serangan, on Bali’s East Coast, pending a large-scale development project at the site. It joins a long list of waves under threat from rampant tourism development on the island. “The investors have closed off the land to all surfers,” confirmed Curtis Lowe, project manager at Project Clean Uluwatu. “Local fishermen can still squeak around, but they have security, and the warungs have been bulldozed and taken out.” Another long term expat and business owner confirmed that the gate at the entrance to Serangan had been “locked for infrastructure work,” pending the large-scale construction project. It’s unclear what shape the development at Serangan will take. Surfline’s request for comment from the developer went unanswered, but according to the company’s website the area is set to “become a Balinese model of village tourism.”
Talk of a jetty being built in Bali’s Canggu that had hundreds of surfers and local community members protesting one week ago was all centered on a big “misunderstanding”, says a traditional village head. Fears shot through the community that a construction project at Pererenan Beach would produce a jetty, that once finished would completely destroy Canggu’s legendary Echo Beach wave as we know it, just hundreds of meters away. News of a paddle out protest on July 2 quickly spread, along with a memo from Persatuan Selancar Ombak Indonesia (PSOI), calling on all board-riders and concerned community members to ‘save the wave’ of Echo Beach in danger of demolition. “It was only a misunderstanding. They suspected this project would damage the waves. Yet the precise point of this project, of Badung Regency, was to manage the beach to be better, Pererenan Village Head I Made Rai Yasa told Nusa Bali on Friday. The project, fully funded by Badung Regency and managed by their Public Works Department (PUPR) is to build an erosion embankment at the beach, not a jetty, claims Yasa.
“The coastal community has both the ecological and the sociocultural potentials to become a lucrative tourist destination in an environment where tourism flourishes,” the website of the Singapore-based developer, Giti Group, revealed, amidst videos depicting a 500-hectare “eco-development” set to take up the entire island, comprised of nature parks, a harbor packed with luxury yachts, numerous luxury villas, and a high-tech auditorium featuring traditional Balinese dancers. What price range the new resort will fall into remains unclear, but if the latest trend in development is any indication it will not be aimed at the budget surf travelers that have historically made the pilgrimage to Bali. “Right now, they want masses of buses full of Chinese,” said Balinese pro surfer, Marlon Gerber. “Like Pandawa Beach (the site of another large-scale development near Nusa Dua), they want all the beaches like that because it brings in a lot of cash. And at Nyang Nyang (near Uluwatu), this beautiful limestone cliff has been carved out, with roads going down there to target those busloads of people.” With its ability to hold anything from two to 12 feet of swell, Serangan is one of the most consistent waves on the island, popular with everyone from beginners to pros. The warungs on the beach, meanwhile, enjoy a roaring trade, serving coconut, fresh fish and various other local and international dishes in what was one of the last places one could enjoy an authentic Balinese surfing experience. “This is just the beginning, dude,” Marlon Gerber finished, noting the business interests at play in the region. “There are so many places that can be done this way. The wave is not their priority. They don’t even realize they’re affecting this wave. They’re just thinking people, mass tourism and money.” [Surfline July 10, 2018]
Head of Badung PUPR Ida Bagus Surya Suamba says things spun out of control with so much “misinformation” circulating in the community, questioning the project. The construction is for a coastal arrangement project to build a revetment (the erosion embankment) to prevent further erosion, not to build a dock. Along with the revetment would also be an access bridge, or walkway and kiosks for local vendors, says Suamba. “There is also the structuring of the river, the construction of an access bridge, and the arrangement of merchants by building kiosks. So there is no construction of a jetty that will damage the wave, as alleged by some parties,” Suamba said. “What is clear is that this project will organize Pererenan Beach for the better,” he added. Full management of the kiosks will be handed over to the desa adat, the traditional village authorities. The project was won in an auction by construction company PT Gala Tama, with a bid of IDR10,334,938,254 (US$721k). But the thing that has many scratching their heads over the whole controversy is a rendering of the project that went viral at the time of the protest, showing plans for yes, a revetment and walkway, but also a jetty, very clearly marked out. While it’s dubious that there never really was a plan for a jetty and the idea has been to only build a revetment and walkway this whole time, Badung Regency has not responded to any of Coconuts Bali’s requests for contact, so we can’t say for sure. Generous club members who donated to The Rotary Foundation, made it possible to fund two District Grant projects. The focus of one project was scholarships for poverty level children and accomplished through NGO YKIP. Marilyn led the project along with the tremendous support and commitment from Anita and John T.
NOT WHAT YOU IMAGINED! Have you ever been at all curious about what Rotary does or what a Rotary meeting might be like? Would it be a bunch of boring people sitting around a table and mumbling about dull stuff? Well, that would be dead wrong and here’s a promise. A Rotary meeting at Rotary Club Bali Seminyak is anything but boring or dull. To give you a bit of insight about what really goes on in Rotary read some excerpts from our July 4 Club Bulletin…. What a fantastically great meeting our brand new President Erika had for us. Pres Erika shared lots of club and project information, with promises of more to come!
some of us find the room chilly. What’s amazing is how quickly the room warms up once we’re all comfortably settled. Yes, we are all contributing hot air…so keep talking and warm up that room. Standing on long time club tradition, Pres Erika opened the meeting with Rtn Manfred reading the Four Way Test… always a good reminder of ‘What We Think, Say and Do’. And Manfred also served as our Sergeant of Arms…well done Manfred! Three of our members were welcomed back after long absences. It was so good to see Peter Lindinger, who spoke to us with love and reverence about the passing of his dear wife, Patrice. Always the good Rotarian, Peter L brought an exchange flag from Rotary Club Navarro.
The second project was health focused, teaching children how to grow and eat healthy food. This project is led by Florian with help from committee members Mario and volunteer Ida…the only woman on this committee. Wonder why the shopping always falls to a woman? Maybe because women do it better? Future meetings will showcase our club’s current and potential projects. IMPORTANT: New procedures are now being written by the Projects Service Committee that will make it easy for all members to propose projects. Our July RCBS meetings and events calendar is posted. On July 18 we’ll be visiting Puspadi Bali where we’ll see how prosthetics are fitted and made, then easily transported to the disabled recipients with the bus our club bought for Puspadi Bali.
Peter Erni is also back and going strong, recovering from a life threatening accident. With him was his ever caring partner, Puspita Dewi. Returning from foot surgery was Sally…using a cane but full of her usual high energy.
President Erika
But you’ve got to know what happened before the meeting. Pres Erika really wasn’t sure just how much of the meeting set-up would be her responsibility….so she was at the Trans Hotel practically at the crack of dawn. Getting ready for a meeting involves so much DOING…hanging and displaying all those club flags brought by visiting Rotarians from throughout the world, putting out flyers, setting up club plaques and reward certificates, distributing general club information, all the technical computer stuff properly connected, and more! Lo and behold…thanks to IPP Alex, GM at the Trans, and his fabulous staff, all set-up was DONE, ready and waiting for Pres Erika…even the complimentary sparkling wine was chilled and in place to be poured for club members and guests. Special thanks go to IPP Alex and his team of angels for a 100% smoothing-of-the-way for Erika’s very first meeting. On first entering our beautifully prepared meeting room,
Big on transparency, Pres Erika reported the club’s bank balance as of June 30. The balance is IDR 545,267,020. About 60% of this amount is committed to ongoing project activities and club operations (like our Rotary dues!) but we’ll soon know what might be used for new projects. GROAN! With Mt. Agung acting up, Pres Erika visited the Bali Crisis Centers to learn how they would support local communities and visiting guests to Bali…if the volcano gets serious. Like most NGO’s the centers are seeking contributions. Pres Erika will refer them to Anita, Service Project Chair. Yet another possible new project for the club! To further add to our President’s duties, Erika attended the Grant Management Seminar in Kudus, Centre Java, July 6 and 7. Rotary is all about service…responding to problems faced by our local Balinese communities. Erika’s attendance at this meeting makes it possible for our club to participate in new Global and District Grants this year… adding to the seven already in progress. Held on June 30, Tineke represented out club at the combined handovers by many Rotary, Rotaract and Interact clubs in District 3420. This is where ‘old’ club presidents and boards pass the baton to new presidents and boards. Entertainment was non-stop and it was one huge (just a little wild) party.
Sergeant of Arms Manfred invited Guest Speaker Julia to draw the winning raffle number and Mario won. The raffle prize was a stunning sarong. PP Marie Francoise draped the sarong around Mario’s waist, over his shoulders and on top of his head…all very attractive. Mario is such a good sport with a super sense of humor. Would someone please invite Mario to a Balinese ceremony so he can wear his new sarong? And a final word from our President BE HAPPY….NOT BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS GOOD, BUT BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE THE GOOD IN EVERTHING. Marilyn Carson ak Rotary Club Bali Seminyak
