4 Who Let the Dogs Out? Eating dog is something we would never do. It disgusts us, for all sorts of reasons. We also understand that this is largely a cultural issue. Eating man’s best friend is not generally a practice of people whose conditioning originates from what is now Europe. The issue has surfaced again because of Australian media reports last month that tourists may have unknowingly eaten dog from saté carts. Among other things, it was another opportunity to do a bit of Bali bashing. Tourists do a lot of unknowing things, including, in the case of some Australians, not even knowing where they are. It is a belief held by some, apparently, that Indonesia is a place in Bali. Nonetheless, governments have a duty of care to all who fall within their purview, whether temporarily or not. This may be a novel concept too, in some parts of the world. So it was pleasing to hear that in response to reports of saté dog, the Bali authorities set off at a fast trot to check whether this was so. Animal husbandry chief I Putu Sumantra said on Jul. 9 that so far no evidence had come to light. Doubtless the word got around the saté cart sector pretty smartly. Never mind, Pak Sumantra’s dog squad is still on the case. He’d also like to find whoever it was that sparked the saucy story, which, as ever in such circumstances, is a little too piquant for local bureaucratic tastes. Shoot the messenger is always good policy, especially for policymakers without a policy. There are several things that can be said about Bali’s dog meat trade, once you’ve taken your anti-nausea pills. Some estimates suggest 70,000 dogs a year are the unwilling victims of this market. The dogs are usually killed horribly – there’s some suggestion that poisoned dogs are in the mix too, which would very clearly be a human health risk – by people who plainly have no conscience and who, by practising cruelty and theft, actually are breaking the law. Most dog meat is consumed in restaurants specifically serving dog. It’s not illegal to do so, though restaurants have to be licensed. Well, notionally, in the way of things here. It’s very clear that animal protection laws must be strengthened. Indonesia’s largely date from the Dutch era, which ended three generations ago. Any tub-thumping nationalists who also feel responsibility for other species – ants come to mind, for some reason, in this context – might like to do something about this. The laws here are chiefly concerned with wild life and domestic stock, in the manner of colonial policy. Dogs are not specifically mentioned and so effectively are not animals for the purposes of the legislation. It’s not only western foreigners or animal welfare organisations that are up in arms about the dog trade here. Indonesians are too. For one thing, their family pets are just as much at risk in the epidemic of abductions by thieves looking for a quick profit from a meat trader as anyone else’s. It’s not something the authorities here can just do a little rain dance about and then forget. So that’s one SOP that’s useless in the circumstances. Who let the dogs out is not the issue. Running Bali, rather than running around in circles, is what it’s all about.

Added Spice Chris Salans isn’t a man to let the grass grow under his feet. He’d rather put it in the pot to augment the already zesty fare that he serves at Mozaic, his flagship restaurant in Ubud. The culinary world is one of constant movement, of subtle shifts, and occasional seismic moments. One such moment has just occurred at Mozaic, where the premises have been upgraded and renovated by Lloyd Hassencahl of Design Solutions, with a stylish lounge and dining room. It’s like dining in Salans’ own house, with drinks before dinner in the living room, according to the blurb. Along with the new ambience is a new set of menus, which offer a choice of six or eight courses. The eight-course menus are new and come with wine pairing. New Kevala chinaware and wood and stone service wares have been brought in to give a more organic feel. The food service is “more interactive” and food is served at the table rather than brought there. The signature item is the Table Top Dessert, served from a side table. Mozaic’s style has always been “French cuisine, Balinese flavours” and this is still the case, but, according to Salans, even better. There are three new tasting menus: “From Our Local Farmers”, “A Trip Around the World”, and “Our Vegetarian Tasting Menu”. Salans also operates the Spice chain of gastro-bars in Ubud

HECTOR’S and Sanur, and has now opened in Seminyak. That’s where the other in crowd goes, if it can get through the traffic.

Farewell

NC/BT/U-19 July 17

It’s sad to have to note that on Jul. 11 long-term Sanur identity Peter Dawes died. He had been ill for a little while, but his death came as an unpleasant surprise to his friends. Fellow scribbler Vyt Karazija, tells us this: “Peter was one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. I knew him only slightly, but liked him immensely. A good natured and tolerant man, his great sense of humour, his kindness and generosity attracted many friends who will mourn his untimely passing.

NC/Ns/G - 27 July 11

“If he knew you were a reader, he would offer to lend you books. If you were interested in motorbikes, he would happily demonstrate his incredible ‘Bali Harley’, a chop-shop masterpiece that had started life as a humble Mio. If you needed to talk, he would really listen, and not just wait for his turn to speak. I never heard him say a bad word about anybody – a rare and precious trait. And he was a big fan of Magnum ice creams, which, for me, immediately put him squarely into the Good Guys category.” RIP, Peter Dawes: as Karazija also notes, he will be greatly missed.

Jog On Briton Tom Hickman, who also scribbles for a crust, has been keeping us abreast of preparations for Bali’s first coast-tocoast ultra marathon on Aug. 19-20. We have to say we’re impressed. Coast to coast here, if it’s North-South, which in the case of the ultra marathon it is, involves running up some pretty high hills. It’s the sort of thing we might possibly have contemplated back in the day when we did all sorts of fitness things so we could properly serve the interests of HM The Queen (lovely lady, wears many hats, and the Brit Floral and Aussie FlyCork ones were applicable in our case). But not any more: too old, you see, even to donate blood, which is shocking. Hickman tells us he’s slimmed down a bit as the training for this run kicks in. If we slimmed down any more, we’d disappear.

C/CI/G-12 April 17

We digress. So back to the point: the ultra marathon is to raise funds to pay the way through primary school for seven children in Bali. It’s a good cause with some great sponsors. You can check it all out via @classroomofhope.

Java’s Great Well, drink up. Apparently two new international studies have found that coffee may prolong life. That’s good news for Java (coffee) as well as for people who apparently want to live forever. It may not be so beneficial for Bali’s oppressed luwaks, but that’s another matter. Two or more cups of coffee a day are said to reduce the risk of death by 18 per cent, if you’re male. At the rate The Diary drinks coffee, we’ll win the Methuselah Cup.

C/G/G-9 Nov. 16

We quote from a rather breathless Sky News Australia item on the topic: “But the latest research bodes better for men than women with one study of more than half a million people across 10 European countries finding men who consumed at least three cups a day were 18 per cent less likely to die from any cause than non-coffee drinkers… Women, on the other hand, drinking the same amount benefited less but still experienced an 8 per cent reduction in mortality.” Grammar Police Note: Bode is an English verb, of Germanic origin. It can bode well or badly. It’s unclear whether it can legitimately do so “better”, at least grammatically (although in that sense it may be “very unique”). But never mind, it was on Sky News after all, which so frequently proves its worth as a risible source of misinterpreted information and mangled language.

Computer & Internet CERTIFIED MYOB Consultant in BALI Website: www.myob.com

Rima Agustina was born and brought up in Bandung, West Java. An avid nature lover, she was a member of bird watching clubs in high school and university. In 2008, Rima earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology and in 2016 her Master of Science Degree in Bio-management at the prestigious Bandung Institute of Technology. Rima worked as a lecturer from 2004 to 2008 and a research assistant studying primates in the Mentawai Islands off West Sumatra in 2008. Since 2016, she has served as the Education and Community Development Manager at the Begawan Foundation in Badung that focuses on breeding the critically endangered Bali Starling in the wild. Where did you get your interest in nature? It started when I was a kid. I lived in a suburban area where wildlife was not considered “strange.” When I was in high school, I joined an eco-club, which gave me the opportunity to know more about organizations related to the environment. After high school, it was only natural that I chose biology as a career path. What inspired you to apply for a job at the Begawan Foundation? Ornithology is one of my favorite subjects. I found the foundation’s breeding and release programs really interesting. In other areas of animal conservation, such as tiger conservation, it often feels abstract as we don’t really have contact with the animals. We have to rely a lot on guesswork about their health, population density, threats to their habitats, and so forth. But this is not the case at the foundation where we are in close proximity to the birds everyday. What education programs has Begawan Foundation initiated? In 2014, we started a 10-week “Learning by Doing” program at the schools in our area of Sibang and Payangan in which the kids learned about avian conservation and the important role that birds play in our eco system. In 2016, we launched the Bali Starling Ambassadors Program. We also began a waste management education program. What program are you the most proud of? The Bali Starling Ambassadors Program has created genuine enthusiasm in the kids who study at our Breeding and Release Centre on Friday and Saturday afternoons. This program inspires students to learn independently at their own pace and in their own way. They learn strategies on how to combat poaching and protect the starlings against birds of prey, geckoes and snakes. The kids peer into microscopes to observe feathers and watch birds in the wild with binoculars. Most have become learning machines thirsty for more knowledge! What’s wrong with owning a Bali Starling? A common misconception is that if you own a Bali Starling as a pet, it will save the birds from extinction. It’s not illegal to own a Bali Starling as long as it was born in captivity and purchased from legal breeders who have a valid license. However, people must be aware that owning them as pet might save them from genetic extinction, but a high population in captivity while there are no birds living in the wild means it’s essentially extinct. The birds also have psychological needs. They need to have a mate. They need a particular size (minimum 2m3 per pair) socialization enclosure where they can fly comfortably. They need to eat a healthy balanced diet (most bird owners in Indonesia give birds concentrated food/pellets). They need quiet natural surroundings such as tree branches to perch and natural materials to build nests. Has it been difficult establishing programs to protect the Bali Starling? Yes and no. On one side is the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which reinforces the value of harmony with nature in society. This philosophy which helps to conserve

and protect the environment (including wildlife) has been a part of traditional culture for more than one thousand years. But on the other hand, it is undeniable that poverty and lack of awareness about sustainable development encourage people to poach this valuable bird. Has the program been a success? We are still struggling. We released 65 birds in Nusa Penida in 2006, but because the poaching rate was so high and the island was becoming more and more popular as a tourist destination, the population didn’t survive. Between 2012 and 2014, we released 16 Bali Starlings in the Green School area around Sibang village, but unfortunately most of them also did not survive. Predators took some, others might have been poached, but now there are only 5 wild Bali Starlings in the area. Having learned from these experiences, we are trying to get communities to join us in protecting the birds by conducting education and breeding programs.

C/Ci/I-05 July 17

What is the Community Breeding Program? Local communities are our last hope in saving the bird from extinction. The fact that there is not much forest left in Bali, and that the national park service still has great difficulty enforcing laws protecting wildlife, the help we get from Balinese villagers is crucial. The program enlists members of the community to breed Bali Starlings in their homes and take care of the birds under Begawan Foundation’s supervision. The idea is to release the offspring after 2 years, then under the protection of the community the birds would reproduce in the wild, eventually creating a flock. The program also supports Sibang Kaja Village’s vision of becoming a heritage village that offers eco-tourism tours to see wild Bali Starlings as the main attraction. Where can we learn more about the Begawan Foundation? Website: http://www.begawanfoundation.org, Facebook: Begawan Foundation; Twitter: @yayasanbegawan; Instagram: @begawanfoundation. Or visit our Breeding and Release Centre, Green School Complex, Banjar Saren, Desa Sibang Kaja, Kec. Abiansemal, Badung. Or Banjar Pengaji 14, Desa Melinggih Kelod, Kec. Payangan, Gianyar, tel. email: info@begawanfoundation.org. No landline in the Sibang Centre, but the Payangan center’s administration office telephone is 0361 900-1326. How can one help advance the work of the foundation? By spreading the message that we are trying to deliver so we can get more moral and financial support. We are a non-profit organization. Donations can be made via bank transfer (see our website) or any other payment service (i.e. Paypal). Visitors are also welcome at our Sibang Breeding and Release Centre.

Growing Choko ‘Dear Garden Doctor, I found a long lost forgotten choko on the back of the kitchen shelf that had to my surprise sprouted a fresh set of leaves from the end of the fruit! I have since planted it into a small pot eagerly awaiting to see if it grows up whilst deciding where to put it in the garden. Do you think that this plant will crop and how long should I expect to wait for it to produce? Do you have any further advice or tips for growing choko. Thank you in advance. Dianne - Bali’

value of the fruit, which by the way is both nutritious and tasty. There are many creative ways to use it and keep in mind that choko is more than just the fruit - choko is everything! The fresh shoots, leaves, seeds and roots are all edible. abundantly if grown well, which brings me to another question Chokos are often grown specifically for their fresh shoots and - Is a choko a fruit or a vegetable? tendrils, popular in Asian cuisine and sometimes known as the dragon whisker vegetable. The young shoots and leaves Chokos are one of the true fruits which are generally thought are commonly consumed as a vegetable all over Asia. of as vegetables in a culinary sense, mainly due to their lack of natural sweetness. Cucumber, pumpkin, eggplant, avocado Trimmed tips can be steamed and served like any other and tomato are some other common fruits that are generally vegetable. The soft seed inside the fruit can even be fried thought of as vegetables. Despite their lack of natural and has a taste reminiscent of roasted almond - it’s a real sweetness these culinary vegetables are botanically regarded treat! as fruits. In botanical terms, a fruit is the structure that develops from the flower, after it has been fertilised, and which typically contains seeds. An easy way to remember the difference is that fruits have seeds, whereas vegetables don’t. This leaves me a little perplexed about the seedless watermelons! And try telling a six-year-old that a pumpkin is a fruit and see how far you get - I digress. Choko is at home growing in the conditions of a warm tropical climate. Plant it in a full sun location for best results. Once growing, the plant will need space and support to grow. It will grow well along fences, walls, trellises or even up a tree. The vines will start to spread anywhere and everywhere, and can easily take over the entire yard, smothering plants and even invading the neighbours plot.

Choko (botanical name Sechium edule) is also commonly known as chayote christophine, pear squash and vegetable pear. It is a vine belonging to the Cucurbit family, related to cucumbers, pumpkins, squash and melons. For anyone that wants to grow a choko vine the official method is to leave a fruit on the shelf and wait a few weeks for it to sprout. Usually this situation comes about by accident when a forgotten fruit has rolled off to the back of the kitchen shelf all by itself. Then suddenly one day you find that a plant is growing out of the kitchen cupboard, and on closer inspection you discover that it’s a choko! Once the choko has sprouted a few inches of growth out of the fruit, plant it outside with the sprouted half above the ground. It will prefer a well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter worked in. Keep it well watered for the first few months until it is established. Chokos are easy to grow and will fruit

The fresh young leaves and raw fruits can be sliced fresh and added to salads for extra crunch. The tuberous roots can even be pulled up from the ground and used as a potato substitute. Choko fruits are used in curries, soups, and stews, where they absorb all of the herbs, spices and flavours of the dish, The subtle taste of choko always renders it adaptable to the flavour of other ingredients. Any home gardener who likes to experiment with new and unusual varieties of fruits and vegetables should have a go at growing a choko. They have a high yield of fruit which is both savory and nutritious, and the fresh shoots and tendrils are also very useful as a vegetable.

The best part is once established the plant will do very well For these reasons, it is best to train the vines along a trellis at growing on its own. In fact, it is so prolific that you will and keep them well trimmed and under control. Choko is so probably spend more time cutting it back than you do actually prolific that it will take over a yard in no time at all, if left to its trying to grow it! own devices. Growing choko across an overhead trellis or an outdoor pergola is useful, as it can provide shading for outdoor areas with the lovely fruit hanging down for easy pickings. The vine produces both male and female flowers which pollinate via wind and insects. Once your plant is in the ground you should be picking fruit within 9-12 months. Pick the fruit when it is 4-6 inches in length. There are many now who might be thinking – why, oh why, would you ever consider planting a choko vine? They go rogue, running rampant all over the garden, with fruit that doesn’t even taste that nice. Well, in fact despite what some people think, choko are a very versatile plant, with uses that extend far beyond the culinary

Don’t shop for food when you’re hungry. *Shop for produce first; it will fill your cart and make it less likely to fill it with junk. *Foods with fewer listed ingredients are generally better than those with lots. *Use Foursquare to find just the right restaurants or coffee shops for you. You are able to read reviews on the spot and obtain essential information like pricing, directions and opening times. *When pouring liquid from one of those rectangular, waxed-cardboard boxes of juice, soup, milk, etc, make a hole on the other side of the lid so that the liquid is easier to pour. *If one of those same rectangular, waxed-cardboard boxes is swollen, it means the contents have gone bad and don’t buy it. *The best way to quench a spicy hot (pedas) mouth on fire is to drink vodka, olive oil, whole milk or yogurt or eat white rice or bread that all bind with or soak up the capsaicin oil and washes the hot and painful sensation away. *Chicken nuggets are only measly breaded bits of reconstituted scrap chicken. *Javara (http://www.javara.co.id) sells retail and in bulk all different kinds and flavors of Bali salt: Mountain salt, Krayan salt, Amed Salt, Kusamba salt, etc. *moneywise. Exchange rates at http://balibestrate.com are updated every few hours during working hours. *If a handyman gives you a quote on a job, have him write the quote down in their own handwriting so both of you can refer to it again once the time comes to start the job or to refer to if there are any misunderstandings. *You don’t need eye doctor’s prescription to order eyeglasses or lenses and many opticians do refraction measurements for free. *Selsun Blue Shampoo is best treatment for getting rid of dandruff available on Bali for only Rp. 45,000/120 ml. *One pays a high price for financial illiteracy. *Ada uang abang disayang, tak ada uang abang ditendang. “No money, no honey.”

*Kitchen tricks. A spoon is better than a table knife for spreading jelly, butter, cream cheese, whatever onto bread. *To unscrew a very tight jar lid, stretch a fat rubber band around the rim of the lid and then turn or strike the lid’s edge with the blunt edge of a heavy knife or wedge a spoon under the edge of the lid and use it as a lever to pull the metal out slightly, breaking the vacuum seal. *To stop a pot from boiling over, lay a wooden (not metal or plastic) spoon across the top of the pot. * To quickly clean a blender, fill it halfway with warm water, add a drop of dish detergent, turn it on again, then rinse it with hot water under a kitchen faucet. *If you put a loaf of stale bread under running water, then put it in the oven at 300 degrees for 6-12 minutes (depending on its size), the steam makes the crust crackly and the inside moist and soft again.

*Top Stove. A great selection of gas stoves can be found upstairs (in the back) of the Depo Selsun Blue Shampoo Bangunan home improvement supermarket, Jl. Teuku Umar Barat 388, Denpasar (tel. 0361847-5888). The big Stainless Steel FC 3952 Modena Gas Stove sells for around Rp. 13 juta (sometimes on sale for Rp. 10.5 juta). There are two models with different size ovens. For the money, this is one of the best stoves available on Bali - full electronic ignition, including in the broiler and oven; rotisserie and convection oven and long central griddle burner in the center of the industrial style (with cast trivets) top for frying eggs, pancakes, chapatti, etc. It’s way cheaper than others such as the commercial grade TechoGas that runs up to Rp. 50 juta, a wonderful stove if money is no object. Upstairs at UFO, Jl. Teuku Umar, Denpasar (tel. 0361-227-188) also has a pretty good selection of stoves, where the cost for the FC 3952 model is around Rp. 16 juta. For the Love of Pets…. Lend a Paw

finances and records for Bali Pet Crusaders are monitored and produced by Deb and are audited by Mr Stuart Murray, CPA on a pro-bono basis.

There’s no denying Deb Banfield loves dogs. A visitor to Bali many years ago, Deb’s love for animals extended to Bali’s stray dog and cat population when she came to the island as an integral step in her long journey towards recovery from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after twenty years in the navy. She founded Bali Pet Crusaders as a form of therapy for her problems and as a way to ‘give back’ to these animals and ‘thank’ them for delivering her moments of joy when she needed it most.

Deb and the team at Bali Pet Crusaders are reaching out for assistance to help keep them afloat. If you can spare some money to donate to this amazing animal loving cause, please do so! All donations over $2 are tax deductible in Australia and are a great way of reducing your taxable income and assisting Pet Crusaders and the pooches and pussycats of Bali that need your help!

Bali Pet Crusaders has been instrumental in the sterilisation of thousands of homeless and rescued dogs since its inception just a few short years ago. They provide greatly subsidised

sterilisation of local dogs and cats (free for those who are unable to afford it) in an effort to lessen the number of unwanted animals and reduce the suffering for those poor animals who aren’t fortunate enough to find their ‘furever’ home. Deb lives in Australia with Doogle, her beloved assistance dog. Doogle is what’s referred to as a Mind Dog: a fully trained psychiatric service dog that helps people with mental health disorders to still live a full and happy life. Though she resides off the island, Deb makes regular visits to Bali as she is still instrumental in the management of the organisation and their amazing team here and plays a huge part in coordinating the fundraising and donations that basically facilitate the incredible work that Bali Pet Crusaders and their volunteers continue to do. Unfortunately, Deb received some tragic news of late regarding Doogle’s health. Like most avid animal lovers, Deb feels she must put her furry family member’s needs above those of her role with the Pet Crusaders for the time being and desperately needs our help to maintain the level of awareness about the group and the funds required to continue this organisation’s valuable work on the island. Bali Pet Crusaders are an accredited Australian charity and have the Australian Charities and Non Profit Commission’s tick of approval. 100% of donations go towards paying their vets and buying vet medicine and supplies. They try to maintain administrative costs to an absolute minimum and no member of the board or volunteers receive financial remuneration. All

Four Times the Fun with Bali’s Best Day Out! Why on earth would you want to waste time in traffic or hours stuck in a car traversing the island seeking out activities to satisfy the whole family when Bali’s best entertainment options are jam packed into the one convenient location here in Canggu? Finns Recreation Club (formerly the Canggu Club) encompasses everything your entire clan craves for a fantastic day out and with their Super Fun Pass, you can get four times the fun and free transport to boot! With Bali’s best beach club and Finns Recreation Club now nestled under the same umbrella, you can get your adrenalin amped action fix and beach club fun in the sun all in one. Finns Super Fun Pass guarantees entrance to four terrific attractions all for the one price. Just Rp 500K for adults and Rp 380K for children (kids under three are free) ensures entry into Finns Beach Club, admission to all of the aqua action at Splash Water Park, one hour of high octane entertainment at Bounce Trampoline Centre and an hour on the lanes at Strike Ten Pin Bowling. They offer a free shuttle bus service between Finns Beach Club and Finns Recreation Club so you’re free to enjoy both venues without the need to tackle the traffic. One of the best features of the Super Fun Pass is its flexibility. Don’t feel you have to cram all of those activities into one day only. Fun Passes carry a seven day validity period so you can spread out your enjoyment over a whole week if you like! Make the most of an entire day keeping your cool on the slides at Splash and if you want to get a bigger posse together for Ten Pin, extra players can be added to your game for just Rp 85K per person. The Super Fun Pass is perfect for those visiting the island for

a brief stay or families heading out to Canggu for the day. For holiday makers or business travellers planning on staying a little longer, Finns Recreation Club offer other casual memberships that may prove more suitable. The Social Membership or Social Plus Membership options are ideal for visitors staying in Bali for a week or one month or more. Both Social and Social Plus options include entry to Finns Beach Club (minus the usual required minimum spend), free towel hire, high speed members’ wifi access, single day bed hire and one added guest pass per day as well as access to all social sports at Finns Recreation Club.

You can donate via direct bank transfer or by Paypal. If you feel you would like to help in a different way, check out their web page for their wish list of surgical items they desperately require for the sterilisation process. You might also be able to assist by sponsoring or fostering a pet, particularly if you live in Bali, or if you own a business, what about becoming a corporate sponsor? All details regarding bank details and ways to donate can be found on their web site: balipetcrusaders.org Whether you live in Bali or visit on a regular basis, have fallen for those sad puppy dog eyes staring out at you from the sidewalk or even given protective cuddles to a little fur baby you’ve found on the pantai, like me you’ll want to help. Instead of putting your Rupiah towards that next Canggu coffee or Bintang at the beach bar, consider the pup that’s got its paws in the sand next to you and send some Bali Pet Crusaders’ way. Bali’s forgotten pets will raise a paw in thanks.

For those seeking slightly more sporting opportunities, the Social Plus membership includes entry to Splash Water Park, the Fitness Centre, Tennis Centre and Lap Pool. Both membership options also offer considerable discounts on spa services and guest passes as well as a 20% discount off F&B on members’ Sundays! For full details on Super Fun Pass pricing and inclusions as well as comprehensive information about Social and Social Plus memberships, go to the websites: FINNSRECCLUB.COM or FINNSBEACHCLUB.COM . Don’t bother with the tedium of trying to coordinate your own line up of activities. The hard work has already been done for you with Finns Super Fun Pass. All you need to add is your enthusiasm!

Radio stations in Bali Who is populating the airwaves these days? By Ines Wynn Are people still tuning in to radio stations these days? Sadly here in Bali, few broadcast in English for the benefit of the many expats. On the other hand there is a plethora of Bali radio stations – more than 40 at present - squawking on the FM/AM bandwidths and at first glance they all seem to play the same type of music. Which ones are on your dial list? I took some time to explore what is really on offer here. Admittedly, not having a well-functioning radio I surfed the airwaves on my computer and found that most stations are streaming online. Then I contacted a sampling of stations and sat down to chat about programming content, their fan base and their broadcasting philosophy. The good news is that there are many Bali stations to choose from, both FM/AM and internet based though none of them provide predominant English-language broadcasting. That role was formerly taken up by Paradise FM, the English-only language station that erstwhile graced the airwaves in Bali; sadly it is no longer in existence. Paradise FM was very popular with the expat population as it featured mostly rock hits from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. The station was actually owned by Indonesia’s national public broadcaster, Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) who signed a deal with Radio Australia (RA) in March of 2006 allowing Australian programs to be broadcast over the air waves in Bali. If you now search online for Paradise FM you will be directed to the Australian station by the same name, Ballina’s 101.9 Paradise FM where you can listen to popular music. Hard Rock Bali 87.8 FM, contrary to all expectations, does not broadcast in English. A pity because they – and the other Bali stations - are missing out big time, not only on acquiring a vast expat fan base but more importantly on the jingling in their pockets from advertising revenue. The mindset is typical and worthy of a catch-22 prize: the stations do not include English programs because, according to their statistics, no expats listen to them. But few expats listen to them because they do not provide English programs. You get it. Most Bali-based stations broadcast in Indonesian, with a fair number of them broadcasting part-time in Basa Bali, the Balinese language. These stations like AR 104.4 FM (Aneka Rama) based in Renon cover many topics of interest to Balinese: popular music, sacred music, cultural, spiritual and social talk shows, something for the lovelorn, etc. They also play a lot of Dangdut. There is of course Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), a government channel with 4 stations in Bali that provide allaround programming, news casts, some music and endless talk shows. A bit on the boring side and certainly not very engaging for those of us used to the variety and upbeat momentum of the public broadcasting services in our home countries. This critique can probably be leveled at most Bali stations; not many of them are engaging from the perspective of the seasoned and older expat. The announcers all sound young –because they all are- and a bit juvenile at times, probably because their listeners are drawn from the populist strata: students, young workers, housewives and stay-at-home residents. The stations will readily admit that their fanbase is primarily Indonesian and they have no idea how many expats are listening to them. Incidentally, there are just a few AM stations and most are limited to community campus radio. Most all popular are FM stations and they also broadcast online, so if you want to check them out you can download their app and have a go and a giggle. So what stations are you listening to? A bit of an informal enquête among some Bali expats reveals a lot of them are listening to Australian network stations for a bit of western flavor. You can check online at radioaustralia.net.au or australianetwork.com. Others who want a bit more local flavor can check out the Bali Radio stations online. Most of them typically don’t have exciting websites. Some look a bit cluttered and a little dated, probably because most of them are rarely updated. But they are a good gateway into their live broadcasting programs. On the other hand, most all have active FaceBook and Twitter pages.

Those of us looking for some genuine jazz programs or classical music are not served by many stations, though you may hear the odd jazz number played on the “classics” or instrumental programming. Neither will we find much in terms of topics particularly of interest to expats like talkshows about current issues, legalities of employment, property ownership, navigation among social and cultural hills and waves, mixed marriages and their implications for partners and children, elder care, family law, etc. About censorship: according to the radio people I interviewed radio programs do not get censored by authorities although there is a strict self-censorship philosophy among the stations; they typically follow societal and cultural norms, staying aloof of taboo and risqué subjects and those liable to ruffle political feathers. They do broach some controversial subjects from time to time in their preplanned chat programs. Then they follow a scripted agenda. Incidentally, political subjects were popular until 2010 but dried up because it became a divisive topic. Young people, in Bali, it seems, are very divided politically. True to the Bali spirit, these divisive topics are best left aside. Radio FBI Bali 91.8 FM and Menara 102.8 FM Bali both broadcast from the same Denpasar location and they both play a similar range of domestic and international music, with the exception that FBI (Flamboyan Bali Indah) limits its hit songs from 2000 to the latest whereas Menara happily plays the top 40’s in a wider time slot from the 1980’s on, classics in their parlance. From 6 am to midnight their 18-hour broadcast beams with songs that are, were or will soon be hits from various streams, such as pop, rock, jazz, hip hop, ballads to alternative music. FBI Bali Radio claims it has become the HITS Radio number 1 in Bali with a fan base in the 15 to 30 year-old range. Menara’s says theirs is 13 to 70, mostly due to the large variety of music they play, including classics. And they clarify that classics mostly means instrumental in the style of Kenny G, Yanni or Kitaro. No genuine classical music as we understand it. But perhaps they do play Move over, Beethoven?

Menara does include Dangdut music whereas FBI does not, which limits itself to rap, hi-hop and other teen bopper music. Along with hits, both stations disseminate some up to date news flashes, lifestyle blurbs, sport news, public service announcements and chat-style programs. They have interactive programs with fans calling in to request songs and chit-chat a bit, mostly commenting on sports events and the scores of their favorite teams. As far as talk shows are concerned, they do them once a month and are limited either to public service, commercial or advertising topics, like a local business coming to talk about its products or services to public service topics by police or government authorities. These topics typically revolve around the danger of drugs, crime prevention or green themes. The talk shows are scripted and reviewed by the stakeholders beforehand. More daring topics like Aids or the LGBT sphere are broached only when “qualified experts” are interviewed. Hard Rock Bali 87.8 FM - Hard Rock Bali in Kuta is a lifestyle and entertainment station and its programming includes pure music entertainment and music programs which are listed on their website. They are one of the few stations that have a dedicated Jazz Lovers progam and one they call the Retromantic besides the wild and young beats. OZ Radio Bali 101.2 FM in Kuta was established in the late nineties. Its target audience are young listeners as well as young adults. It features mostly entertainment and music programs. OZ Radio Bali’s slogan is “Your life could never be this much fun without D’Oz” and they illustrate it with a package of everything related to the Indonesian music scene and to some extend world entertainment in order to make it an entertaining radio in Indonesia. Phoenix Radio 91.00 FM Bali, established in 2002, broadcasts from Renon and provides adult contemporary pop

and rock music, Asian contemporary, classical dance music, R&B and the top 40. It is a smart, creative and innovative station which plays mostly to a fan base of students and young workers. Phoenix does have a cool website with many statistics and a detailed schedule of their daily programs. A variant on the pop and techno-music Bali radio scene is Gianyar based Heartline 92.2 FM Bali which bills itself The Family Radio Station and represents a broader swatch of community life. Their broadcast programs provide easy listening music; at the same time they include family events and village community development programs. Radio Heartline FM Bali aims to play a role in the socioe c o n o m i c improvement of its listeners by disseminating useful information and knowledge and pioneering beneficial community programs such as providing livestock assistance, computer skills and English proficiency. The station is also a portal in disseminating information on Gianyar regency law related to traffic and environmental security. It is actively campaigning for “Safe Riding” on the highways, building good driving skills and adhering to the rules of the road in order to suppress accident numbers and fatal collisions. The Beat Radio Plus 98.5 FM is a favorite station among the young party crowd, both local and expat. Their selection of intelligent adult music is the logical extension of The Beat Magazine which is one of the best known Bali events & nightlife guides and promotes all cool music events: DJ’s or live performances at Sky Garden and various beach clubs and entertainment venues around Bali. The station broadcasts a full 24 hours daily from Renon and plays a very upbeat type of music. If you love electronic music this is the place to tune into. The music they play is ultra-contemporary: nothing beyond the year 2000. There is a wide variety of genres on offer though they play no classical music or jazz. Yet you may hear some left of centre Hungarian folk or new-age relaxation music from time to time. Morning time is dedicated to Indonesian announcers and their choice of beat music though their infantile commentary can be ear-grating, especially when they shout ‘listeners’ every five seconds. Afternoons are dedicated to electronic music. This station also features syndicated music shows in English like the John Digweed show and Carl Cox Global Radio show on Friday nights and the Beat Oracle on Sundays. Two very well accepted local shows are the Ku De Ta radio show three times a week, and The Bali tim Beats Radio Show live on Be Thursdays 8-10pm and Th repeated Friday and Saturday. That’s where you Sat will find out what’s happening the nightlife around town in th every week. ever Internet based. If your listening pleasure is internet based, there are many free apps to tune into thousands of live radio stations, podcasts and shows. DRY DROWNING Let me tell you David’s story. It happened a long time ago. Close on 20 years ago I believe. It was one balmy Bali evening and my pager buzzed to say that I was needed to evacuate a 12-year-old boy to Singapore following a near drowning incident in the hotel pool. Remember I am talking 20 years ago, facilities here on the Island were very basic, so the risk of flying this boy was actually less that leaving him here on the Island. I met David, his family and the doctor at the airport. David was apparently a junior Olympian on his way to compete in a swimming event in Hong Kong. How the heck did a boy that was almost half

What Is ‘Dry Drowning’? You may have heard of the terms “dry drowning” and “secondary drowning.” Those aren’t actually medical terms. But they do point to rare complications that you should know about and that are more common in children. With so-called dry drowning, water never reaches the lungs. Instead, breathing in water causes your child’s vocal cords to spasm and close up. That shuts off his airways, making it hard to breathe. You would start to notice those signs right away -- it wouldn’t happen out of the blue days later. Secondary drowning is another term people use to describe another drowning complication. It happens if water gets into the lungs. There, it can irritate the lungs’ lining and fluid can build up, causing a condition called pulmonary edema. You’d likely notice your child having trouble breathing right away, and it might get worse over the next 24 hours. Both events are very rare. They make up only 1%-2% of all downings. Symptoms

fish drown in a swimming pool? According to David’s father, he had been swimming with friends when one of the boys noticed that David had been under for longer than he should be. They spotted David motionless at the bottom of the pool. When they tried to bring David up, it quickly became apparent that he had become firmly stuck to the bottom of the pool over the filter hatch. David’s chest was flat, & square and a perfect fit over the filter. Once his chest had covered the grid the suction became stronger & stronger making it impossible to move. It took 8 people to pull him off the grid. David was successfully resuscitated by his father, and even though he seemed fine, and was actually sitting up talking and eating chips when I met him, the decision was made to fly him to Singapore ASAP for continuous close observation….why?

Drowning complications can include: • Coughing • Chest pain • Trouble breathing • Feeling extremely tired Your child may also have changes in behavior such as such as irritability or a drop in energy levels, which could mean the brain isn’t getting enough oxygen. What to Do If your child has any breathing problems after getting out of the water, get medical help. Although in most cases the symptoms will go away on its own, it’s important to get the child checked out. Most likely the victim will be put under observation, and if necessary a chest x-ray may be performed, and in severe

cases a breathing tube may be needed with medication to clear the fluid from the lungs. Prevention The most important thing you can do is help prevent drowning in the first place. Children need constant supervision, no matter how water-savvy they are. So there are several lessons to be learned here: • Never assume that strong swimmers will not get into trouble in water. • Look out for your friends (a buddy system around pools & ocean) • Learn first aid - Bali First Responder has courses for all levels. Go to http://www.balifirstresponder.com/ • Check that your pool filter grid is not accessible to swimmers • Take near-drowning victims for observation at a clinic or hospital even if they seem fine. • Make sure you have a good health insurance. Happy Holidays ☺

Shot in the Arm for Sanur Cafe Society A welcome addition to Sanur’s culinary repertoire was the recent opening of Spice by Chris Salans. Having in the past referred to the ‘Culinary Curse of Sanur’, a seemingly psychic law that, apart from the conspicuous exception of Massimo Sacco, makes it hard for an aspiring restaurateur to prosper significantly in the town, my hope is that master-chef Chris Salans of the Mozaic reaturant in Ubud will succeed with this, the second of his Spice marque ventures, with a third newly opened in Seminyak. While Sanur has numerous eateries and watering holes with some notable stalwarts, it seems to struggle when it comes to creating anything approaching the style and relaxed pzazz that go to make up the cafe society that Sanur badly needs to acquire if it is to up its game beyond the clunky rather faded seaside resort and albeit agreeable dormitory suburb that it is today. The Cafe Batujimbar, opposite Spice, sort of fulfilled the role in its quirky way but seems to have retreated into the shadows and more recently the Soul in a Bowl has made some headway in the direction, while Massimo’s regional Italian cooking and gelato operation steams full speed ahead.

or ‘cafe & bar’. As for tapas, for me it’s a bar or counter serving drinks with tasty small snacks to accompany, a place to snack, not for a meal. No reason why the terms can’t be borrowed, adapted and done in a new way. It’s just that at a cafe & bar, I can sit up at a bar, down at a table, indoors or out, can snack, get a full meal, drink tea, coffee or alcohol as I want, when I want. I can arrange to meet people and hang out if I’ve a mind to. When I find a good one of these I treasure it. So forgetting my mumbo jumbo about the Culinary Curse of Sanur, what is it about Sanur that makes it a harder nut to crack? Clearly, judged by the crowds thronging Massimo’s for lunch and dinner the custom is there to be had. Tourists in Sanur seem different from those in Ubud and Seminyak. They’re probably older and clearly not coming for the night life. While there good hotels in Sanur, until a Grand Hyatt opens here shortly, there are no real cutting-edge or 5-star properties to speak of. That leaves the good burghers of Sanur and the passing-through trade.

Salans has made a good start by creating an attractive and accessible space, including a pleasant open-air area sufficiently situated away from the road, that is well-located on Jl. Tamblingan serving interesting food and drink at reasonable prices. With that under his belt, along with a well-run establishment, trained staff and his undoubted energy I’d say he’s got 70 percent of the ingredients necessary for success in place. Now all he needs is the people. And that’s a deal breaker. One is tempted to ask if Sanur deserves Chris Salans? The question is of course a commercial nonsense. The Spice by Chris Salans concept for gastropubs marrying Western cuisine cafe style with Indonesian/local influences is a great idea, properly executed and in the right location. Ubud, where the first Spice opened, and Seminyak, where a third has just opened, may well be easier places for the concept to fly than Sanur, but that does not mean that Spice Sanur won’t soar. It just means that one approach don’t fit all, is all. And..., nomenclature matters. For instance, when I hear the words gastropub and tapas used to describe a new eatery I am not immediately thrilled. I know some great gastropubs, I just wonder why they don’t call themselves ‘restaurant & bar’

Done right that should be enough of a clientele to make a go of things for Spice Sanur, but by no means is it a walk in the park. A few Sundays ago when Spice Sanur held its first Bazaar a few of us were sitting at a table with Chris discussing such things. I tend to feel sorry for any patron being subjected to the views of would-be helpful customers, however well meant, and Chris hung in there like a trooper. It’s clear he’s aware of the task ahead of him in Sanur and is taking various steps to meet the challenge, introducing various events, like a Sunday bazaar, Indonesian dances and excellent live music on Wednesday and Saturday nights. My one piece of advise with regard to the food in Spice Sanur is not to muck too much with the original concept, which I think interesting, but augment it with a short daily menu of decently-sized servings comprising say: two pasta options

(one vegetarian the other seafood or meat), a main fish and meat dish (grilled). That done you’ve covered the gamut. Diners are free to pick and match as they choose, without diminishing the overall ‘concept’ or forcing it on them. The successful cafe to me is a broad church that does not require a book for a menu, yet a potential group of diners discussing where to eat will always be happy to go there, and do so frequently, knowing the food is fresh, good and they will always find something to suit their taste. As for ambient music, treat with great care on a moment-tomoment basis. Background music, however good and carefully selected, should remain background music and be varied (not some loop frequent customers can easily spot and tire of). Except that is, when people want to hear the music. It’s a call. Generally speaking, background music that makes it hard to hold a conversation or use a handphone does not make for good business. Other than that Spice Sanur just needs hang in there and let Sanur do the rest. The town is changing fast and if its City Fathers are even half smart the place stands poised to regain the international cachet it historically enjoyed - but lost somewhere in the early 1990s. Which, I have to say, is when I came here (not that I can take credit for that). My wife and I rented a place for four years in Batiujimbar, still a magic garden back then. Something interesting had happened here but it was as if a wicked witch had passed over the town and put it to sleep. Only echoes remained. Two decades of slumber ensued as the rest of Bali roared ahead, for better or worse. Sanur is now emerging from its torpor. Given its strategic location, pretty much on the way to everywhere, its town centre protected by the ocean to the South and the by-pass to the North and the only part of Bali enjoying a half-reasonable level of municipal infrastructure, with new luxury hotels, a major hospital and fashionable retailers and restaurateurs opening shop here, a distinct if sedate buzz is in the air. If Chris Salans can tweak his operation here to fit the spirit of the town while the rest of the world cottons on to the fact that there is now a part of Bali, still redolent of the past glories, that is one of the more pleasant and convenient environments to be in Bali for business or pleasure, where you are spared the noise and the traffic jams, he will have deservedly hit the sweet spot.

The False Light Matrix When did it all begin? How have so many people gotten tricked by the false light matrix and ultimately fallen down the rabbit hole? In the 1970’s the ‘New Age’ movement began in Western nations and rapidly spread throughout the world as the masses were seeking an alternative to the dogmatic religions that have traditionally been and continue to be representative of mainstream spirituality. “Despite its highly eclectic nature, a number of beliefs commonly found within the New Age have been identified as follows: Theologically, the New Age typically adopts a belief in a holistic form of divinity which imbues all of the universe, including human beings themselves. There is thus a strong emphasis on the spiritual authority of the self. This is accompanied by a common belief in a wide variety of semi-divine non-human entities, such as angels and masters, with whom humans can communicate, particularly through the form of channeling. Typically viewing human history as being divided into a series of distinct ages, a common New Age belief is that whereas once humanity lived in an age of great technological advancement and spiritual wisdom, it has entered a period of spiritual degeneracy, which will be remedied through the establishment of a coming Age of Aquarius, from which the milieu gets its name. There is also a strong focus on healing, particularly using forms of alternative medicine, and an emphasis on a “New Age science which seeks to unite science and spirituality. (https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/New_Age) There is a direct link between New Age spirituality and the ‘False light’. The idea of ‘False light’ came up several years ago in conversation with a friend. She said, “I don’t believe in working with Spirit guides because I don’t know what their agenda is. I prefer to work with and trust my higher Self which is the truest and most reliable source for me.

At that time I didn’t totally understand where she was coming from, because I had been working with my own guides for years and felt that they had my best interests at heart. There was no reason for me to question their intentions. My friend explained further about the good light and bad light, good dark and bad dark. As is the norm in my life, when a new concept is introduced that I don’t totally get, the Universe usually provides me with a direct experience so that I can really understand not from my intellect, but with my whole being. Thus, shortly afterward our conversation, I joined a training that all my friends were raving about. It was based on doing seven ceremonies which would activate our 13th strand of DNA that was lying dormant within us. Supposedly once this occurred we would move into an expanded consciousness and activate any latent potentialities within us, such as our psychic and healing abilities and much more. Of course I was excited about these extraordinary possibilities and signed up right away. During the five days of activations I felt confusion and a growing restlessness within me. The facilitators were continuously talking about the False Matrix and how they knew that everything we had been told was lies. One of the facilitators was always angry but in the next breath, shared that she had been channeling high vibrational information from her alien guides who were totally conscious and knew the TRUTH which would set us all free. I had this strange gut feeling – my higher Self was telling me that something was off with this whole scenario. Here she was saying that she knew the truth and had spent many years getting out of the False Matrix, but my higher Self kept saying there was a lie in all this. I was totally confused. Who should I listen to? This woman who claimed to be free of the Matrix or my higher Self? After our last ceremony many people were crying and thanking the facilitator for these powerful life changing initiations. Most of the people seemed certain that these initiations would open them up to much more abundance and peace in their lives. These were some of the things that the facilitators said we would experience as a result of activating our 13th strand of DNA. Weeks later I still didn’t feel the positive results that the facilitators talked about. Instead something else occurred – I began seeing the face of the woman facilitator appear in my consciousness at random times during the day. I felt wobbly after these episodes and asked my friend what was going on. She told me that I was being psychically attacked by this woman. I was shocked. Why would she be doing this? I thought she was a ‘light worker’? My lesson had begun. The following week I ran into this woman three times at different locations nearby my home. It couldn’t just be a coincidence. In one encounter I was sitting with a good friend who is quite psychic when the woman walked out of the cafĂŠ we were at. “Oh no it’s her again,â€? I said to my friend. “Don’t worry I’ve got your back,â€? she said as she turned her back towards the woman to cover me. “She’s shooting energy arrows at you but they are just falling off me.â€? I was bewildered and disturbed that this woman who proclaimed to be working with the light was attacking me for no reason. I wondered if she was doing this because I wasn’t a total believer in her work? I’m thankful now for that lesson from the Universe because I finally got the meaning of ‘False Light workers’ and ‘False light’. No explanation could match my direct experience. I also learned that we must be vigilant with ourselves and question the Spirit guides we choose to work with as some of them can originate from the ‘False Light’. How do we identify ‘False Light’ Spirit Helpers? Any guide that is still operating from polarity consciousness which is dealing with opposites such as good and bad, right and wrong, dark and light will ultimately have his/her own agenda. How do we know when a guide is real or false? We just ask. Take a moment to drop into your heart space which is how we can access our higher Self. Once we have done this, we then ask the Spirit: “Are you a divine being without any agenda who has my total best interest at heart? Are you free from the false matrix of polarity consciousness? Do you fully embody Oneness consciousness?â€? You are not seeking an answer of words, but instead, a soul communication with this Spirit. After each question pause and allow yourself to totally perceive the energetic answer that you are receiving. If all the answers you receive feel light, then this Spirit is likely a Divine Being from the true light. However, if any of these answers feel heavy, then ask the Spirit to leave now and never return. Ultimately, as we continue our Spiritual journey and personal evolution we will choose to trust in our higher Self more than any Spirit guide or teacher. This is why I love Shamanism so much because it isn’t based on following a guru; it is grounded in ancient traditions that empower us to trust our own wisdom. Through Shamanism we can discover how to easily tune into the wisdom of the earth and the Universe in a variety of ways, such as going on journeys to the transcendent realms, drumming, dancing and Soul song. We find our answers from within and that is where the truth resides.

Restaurant & Food This is adapted from an T Ottolinghi recipe. The soft polenta topped with browned Portobello and oyster mushrooms scented with rosemary, thyme and tarragon is heavenly. You could add or substitute shitaki mushrooms for a variation. Use whatever meltable cheese you like – I used a hard goat’s cheese. This is the kind of recipe that begs for variation. You can buy the truffle oil at Dijon or leave it out altogether. I heated the leftovers in individual oven dishes with lids and it was as good the second day.

Soft Polenta with Mixed Mushrooms and Herbs Serves 4 Ingredients: - 4 Tbl. olive oil - 300 g mixed fresh mushrooms, if they’re large, quarter or halve them - 2 cloves of garlic, crushed - 1 Tbl. fresh tarragon, chopped - 1 Tbl. fresh thyme, chopped - 1 Tbl. tuffle oil (optional)

Directions: Heat 2 Tbl. of the olive oil over a medium high heat in a large skillet. When it’s hot add the garlic and half the mushrooms. Stir fry these a few seconds and then leave the mushrooms to brown, turning occasionally. If you move them around too much they won’t get that nice brown color that is so delicious. Remove the mushrooms and set aside. Add the remaining 2 Tbl. olive oil to the skillet and return to the heat. Add the remaining mushrooms, cooking the same way as above. When browned return the first batch to the skillet along with the tarragon, thyme, truffle oil (if you are using it), salt and pepper. Stir well and cook another minute and then take off the heat and set aside. Boil the stock in a pot and slowly add the polenta while stirring constantly. Lower the heat and cook stirring the polenta with a wooden spoon until it’s cooked through. This will take about 30-40 minutes. (You can use instant polenta for this recipe to speed things up.) If it becomes too thick you can add more stock or water. You want the polenta to remain soft and a bit runny. Now add the parmesan, butter, rosemary, half the chopped parsley, salt and pepper to taste. Heat the broiler and while it’s heating turn the polenta into an oiled glass or ceramic oven dish. Put the thinly sliced cheese on top and slide under the broiler to melt the cheese. When the cheese is melted spoon the mushrooms over the polenta and return to the broiler to heat the mushrooms. Take out of the oven and garnish with the remaining chopped parsley. Buon Appetito!

Salumi & Cheese, in Canggu! Salumeria is just that! Plates of cured, smoked and processed meats are the major attraction. In central Canggu, amongst the rice paddies this amazing little place is the best example, so far, of the growing sophistication of the Bali food scene. How many Salumerias are there in Sydney, Singapore, Jakarta? There may be an isolated one somewhere but I know of none! To find this one in Bali says it all. Geoff Lindsay is already well known in Bali [and Melbourne], as Chef and food conception at Saigon Street on Petitenget and owner/chef at Melbourne’s award-winning modern Vietnamese restaurant, Dandelion. At Salumeria he is doing something that he loves, just for ‘grown-up’ foodies, who like to live as he does.

fennel, pomegranate, mint, chilli and tangerine juice. This dish alone is worth the visit. Smoked Salmon is served with its own caviar [eggs] horseradish and nasturtium leaves. Together with the Carpaccio of Raw Beef, all are included in the monster Sampler Platter, perfect for two persons. Then we come to the star attractions at Salumeria Tanah Barak, the salumi and the cheeses. My most amazing discovery was that apart from one salumi, all the product was made in Indonesia, either Java or Bali. Product made by German, Italian and Swiss, who have come to Indonesia, bringing their skills with them. The way that many generations of their family had been producing the same at their originating village. I often found it difficult to recognize any difference, taste and texture wise, from the original. All the Salumi are aged and then sliced on a traditional hand cranked slicer to maintain the integrity of the salami and melt the delicate fats.

Salumeria is where you go for small interesting plates of antipasto, salumi and exotic cheeses to snack on whilst sipping an aperitif or cocktail BEFORE wandering off for dinner somewhere. Just a hint, do not order dessert with your dinner, come back here later and have an Italian one, or an amazing cheese platter with a coffee or maybe a digestif, or two?

The Hungarian style salami is made locally with coarsely ground salted pork meat, garlic is added, along with spices and is filled into a natural casing. ‘El Merkat’ Chorizo is a locally made Iberian style sausage made from a mix of pork and beef with lots of paprika. The Milano Salami is a traditional Italian sausage made from equal portion of minced beef, pork and fat, seasoned with garlic and pepper, moistened with white wine and dry cured. At Salumeria they age it for 3 months longer than the commercially available product.

Just want a snack? It may be a small plate of Boiled Eggs and Anchovies, Smoked Marlin, Duck Liver Pate, the great Italian Prosciutto e Melon or an unusual Spanish White Anchovies with pomegranate and capers.

The French pepper style salami uses prime selected pork and beef, naturally fermented and air dried for 5 months, covered in black pepper. ‘El Merkat’ Fuet Long Salami is a locally made Catalan thin, dry cured sausage of pork meat and pork intestine.

There is a small but exotic selection of sandwiches on the menu. All served on sourdough or rye, nice and crusty, the way bread should be! A veggie one with grilled eggplant, peppers and zucchini with rocket and tomato or that famous Reuben on Rye, corned beef, sauerkraut and pickles. The there is Smoked Turkey [with cranberry of course] .

And then there is the amazing cheese collection. Black & White cheese was a new one for me, it is a white mold cheese rolled in coconut ash made from cow’s milk, salt, rennet. It is a natural cheese originally made in West Java, now made in Bali. The Cambazola style blue cheese is made from natural local cow’s milk at Jimbaran Bay. The ‘Tilsiter’ I loved! It is a semi-hard yellow aged cheese made from natural local cow’s milk. It has been aged for 9 months made locally at Jimbaran Bay. It is served with a drizzle of honey.

Or maybe a salad, so fresh and clean! Most of the dishes here are served with very Italian crusty bread, and olive oil for dipping! A salad of pea, mint and fresh ricotta is drizzled with lemon infused olive oil and served with an anchovy grissini. The Tomato and Basil is with white anchovies and pecorino pepato. Grilled Goat Cheese with rocket, dates, walnuts, walnut oil and vinaigre de Jerez. The Bocconcini comes with roasted peppers & basil on toasted sourdough. To sample the full range of options here you can begin with a plate of antipasti, a variety of grilled, pickled and/or roasted vegetables. Very Italian! Follow that with your choice of raw seafood and meats, cured, marinated or smoked. The fresh tuna is cured and then smoked, shaved thin and tossed with shaved

Wanaprasta Lampuyang is a raw goat milk cheese, hand crafted in Ubud. The milk is from a special select herd of goats. It is skinned in cinnamon, tamarind and cacao ash. ‘Crottin De Chavigol’ is an aged goats milk cheese, with a very piquant taste. Originally from the Loire valley in France but this one is made in Jimbaran Bay. ‘Ibores’ is a Spanish style cheese made from goats milk, the rind is rubbed with smoked paprika and olive oil. The Red Planet Javae is a Leicester Cheddar style cheese, made in Malang East Java, with orange colour from natural

dyes. The Asiago Javae is also from Malang, it is made from pasteurized cow’s milk, ripened minimum of 3 months, and then a further 3 months at Salumeria. To top it all off, the coffee is great too! And they even sell Cuban cigars for that after dinner relax! What a find this place is….A culinary experience for grown-ups!

you can’t see and walking out being able to see again??? Can you imagine the joy and smiles on their faces?

A JOYOUS WALK!! How many times have you been sitting at the beach enjoying the view and a coffee or beer and someone said to you “do you live here?” Yes, you reply, “you are so lucky” they say. Lucky? More like blessed, to be living on the Island of Gods, among the Balinese people, steeped in culture, religion and family commitments! But life is not easy for all - with no free health care for many or education for all, many struggle to survive on a daily basis. Many people still live in remote villages, high up in the mountains, where accessibility to health care or education is almost non existent. Many yayasans (charitiesnon government funded) are now actively helping those in need in so many ways. Ways that put smiles on the faces of the local people. You too can feel the joy - laugh with them, play with the children. Yet providing that all important, health care or education. Yayasan Rumah Sehat is one such organization. It provides care to the remote villages of the Amed area on the east coast of Bali. “Healthy Days” are sponsored by them. These ‘”days” provide doctors/ specialists/ optometrists/ dentists/ women’s health care/ nurses/ midwives, even a pharmacy. Plus hygiene and environmental education and it is all dispensed free. Some of these villages have never seen a doctor or a teacher. Becoming involved is easy and is so e rewarding. What does re a 1/2 day three or four times a year equal? To ti me m it equals the joy and satisfaction of knowing s that we value and th respect the local people re and want to improve a their health which th ultimately makes them stronger and more able to live and

work on the land and in their homes. I know that all involved in Rumah Sehat from the doctors, the organizers and all the volunteers feel this same joy and satisfaction. You now may be asking yourself, where does the money come from to sponsor a project such as a “Healthy Day”? Although the care is given free, the medicines/ transport/water/food/ and some medical staff have to be paid for. Sponsorship can come from private individuals, other Yayasans; or Rotary clubs both here and overseas. Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset is one such ch club who is sponsoring several “Healthy days” this year. Rotary clubs often join together in sponsorship of many such projects. In June this year, Rotary y h club Bali Ubud Sunset joined with d Rotary Club Seminyak to fund n” two “John Fawcett Foundation” s village visits. John Fawcett has been providing free eye care to y the people of Bali for many many years now. They are based in ye Sanur , but with their mobile “eye nd clinic”, they travel the island ginable! reaching the remotest areas imaginable! Recently (June 13th), a bunch of us headed for Banjar Let - up the steepest mountain you can think of, rain pouring down, in parts the road was washed away and we were driving on gravel - but FINALLY, after a 45 minute drive north of Ubud, we reached our destination, all safe and sound, if not a little shaken up and wet!! The “clinic” was set up in the area designated for us by the Kepala Desa and Banjar. Their mobile van is fully equipped to perform cataract surgery on site. The John Fawcett Foundation team are all trained to perform eye tests/ cataract checks/glaucoma pressure tests/ prescribe medication and dispense glasses, as well as cataract surgery. Now we come to the “JOY” I keep mentioning! What do you think it must feel like, walking hours to reach the clinic aided by a family member because

We sat and watched in awe as the people came, were tested and walked out so happy! There was very sadly two drawbacks to the day - the very heavy rain prevented many from two of the villages from attending, the long walk to Banjar Let in the heavy rain and secondly a death in one of the villages meant many were attending the ceremonies; and as those of us living here know religion, culture and ceremonies comes before all..... However John Fawcett Foundation rescheduled “Free Eye Treatment” for the community which was held on the 29th of June at village Desa Semita and the initial sponsorship money provided for this the 2nd day. This visit included not only the two villages that had missed the first visit, but also, all the school children in the 3 villages. From being a volunteer with Rumah Sehat , I have also become actively involved with the Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset, a small, ve friendly, English speaking group, focusing on health, very hy hygiene, education and water projects. It was through the encouragement of members of both R Rumah Sehat and Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset friends th I looked into this club and soon joined them as another that en energized volunteer! We meet twice a month in Ubud , from 5. 5.30-7PM on Mondays, enjoying a meal together with the ac actual meeting from 6-7. Once a month we have a guest sp speaker - always very informative and entertaining, sp speaking for just 30 minutes! Want to find out more? 35 BRAVECTO / NEXGARD MOST EFFECTIVE FOR TICKS Ticks are everywhere in Bali, and every Sunset Vet client will concur that it’s a constant battle to keep them off your dog. Not only are they unsightly, they can transmit life-threatening diseases such as Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis. Previously the weapons we vets used against ticks was mainly Frontline or Revolution spot-ons but they need to be applied monthly and they merely reduce the number of ticks on your dog, not eliminate them completely. In recent years we have seen new drugs coming onto the market such as Bravecto and Nexguard, which are oral medicines that appear both more effective and longer lasting. These have been game changers in Bali as the tick problem is no longer seasonal but pretty much all year round. However these drugs have also caused controversy with some owners setting up Facebook groups to warn of potential adverse effects to these drugs.

However we believe that here in Bali, the risk to a dog from tick borne disease such as Babesiosis or Ehrlichiosis is many times greater than the risk of adverse effects from Bravecto. Sunset Vet has sold several hundred boxes of Bravecto to clients and not yet had a single adverse effect that we can attribute to the Bravecto. We have only had positive feedback that it is by far the most effective drug yet for keeping ticks off a dog. What is ‘Blood Parasite’? ‘Blood Parasite’ is an umbrella term frequently used in Indonesia to refer to a type of bacteria transmitted by ticks that colonize the red blood cells. The main culprits are the rikettsia, which include the species Ehrlichia and Anaplasma. Also transmitted by ticks are the bacterium Borrelia (causing Lyme disease) and the protozoan Babesia. The most common in Bali seem to be Ehrlichia and Anaplasma, which both cause anaemia, intermittent fever and loss of appetite. They can also interfere with normal coagulation and lead to nose bleeds.

What is Bravecto? Fluralaner (trade name Bravecto) is a synthetic insecticide from the group of isoxazolines that has been licensed for the control of fleas and ticks in dogs and cats. It has been shown to be effective for up to 3 months (spot-ons like Frontline and Revolution are effective for just 1 month) and the manufacturer states that it is safe to use in puppies, pregnant and lactating bitches. At Sunset Vet it is also used to treat demodecosis in a single dose.

If your dog has been exposed to a significant number of ticks, it is quite likely he/she will have encountered and possibly contracted one of these ‘blood parasites’. A strong immune system can usually keep it in check, but any stress or weakening of the immune system can lead to a severe anaemia and even death. Often your vet may pick up on it incidentally, because the tongue or gums look paler than usual. If you do want your pet to be screened for tick borne disease, this can be easily diagnosed via a blood test at your local vet clinic. Bravecto a Lifesaver for Strays with Demodex C/BT/G-14 Sept 16

The drug inhibits antagonist chloride channels by binding to GABA and glutamate receptors in the nervous system of the ticks, but not in the nervous system of mammals. This leads to a spastic paralysis of the parasite. Bravecto is given to dogs as a palatable tablet for oral use and to cats as a topical spot-on. It is rapidly absorbed during oral administration and accumulates in the fat as well as in the liver, kidneys and muscles. Why is it expensive? Bravecto is an expensive drug because it provides 3 months of tick & flea protection in a single dose. Therefore the price of that dose should be compared to the price of 3 doses of Frontline/Revolution, as those are applied monthly. Furthermore it is an imported drug and this always increases the cost significantly. At Sunset Vet we try to reduce the cost to the dog owner by selling XL tablets for dogs of 40-56kg bodyweight and splitting them. Thus a typical Bali dog of 10-14kg can be dosed with a ¼ of an XL tablet. Internet Horror Stories At Sunset Vet we are well aware that there are some pet owners around the world that believe Bravecto or Nexgard is responsible for their dog getting sick or even dying. Facebook groups have been setup to warn pet owners and lobby Merck the manufacturer to take action.

Demodex is a small cigar shaped mite that lives in the hair follicles and causes them to fall out. The dog is usually itchy and develops alopecia, and in the longer term thickened pigmented skin. It thrives in dogs that are either genetically predisposed to it (pit bulls, pugs , bulldogs) or in dogs that have a poor diet or weak immune system. Any breed can be affected though and it is very common in Bali street dogs. Previously the treatment for demodex was always either daily oral ivermectin liquid for 6 weeks, or weekly amitraz washes. Neither of these were practical for treating stray dogs suffering with terrible demodectic mange, without hospitalising them for the duration of treatment at great expense. Although Bravecto was registered as an ‘anti-tick and flea drug’, it was noticed that a single dose also cured demodex. At Sunset Vet we started using it ‘off-label’ for the treatment of demodex and the results were spectacularly successful. Dogs that were completely bald started to regrow their fur after just a single dose. Dog rescuers could now give a single Bravecto dose to a stray with mange, and watch with immense satisfaction as the skin disease resolved and hair grew back within weeks. Should I be using Bravecto for tick control or can I just stick to Frontline/Revolution etc.?

C/BT/I-04 Jan 17

If you are satisfied with whatever you are currently using for tick control such as Frontline, Revolution or Advocate then by all means just keep going with that. However if those medicines are not providing adequate tick control and you feel you need something stronger then Bravecto or Nexgard are the next step. Please note though that these are very strong drugs that should only be given to healthy dogs. Sunset Vet offers veterinary services via their Kuta (24hr) and Ubud (8am-7pm) clinics. For further information or to make an appointment call them on 03619348915 (Kuta) or 0361975296 (Ubud), or visit www.sunsetvetbali.com or www.facebook.com/sunsetvetbali

Local News Kerobokan prison escapees still on run as Indonesian officials tackle overcrowding concerns A group of politicians in Jakarta has demanded a number of prisoners, including foreigners, be moved from Bali’s infamous Kerobokan prison to address overcrowding as police continue a hunt for two men who escaped in June. Members of a parliamentary law committee have toured the jail, declaring that prison officials must have been involved in the escape plot. Australian man Shaun Davidson and Malaysian inmate Tee Kok King are still on the run after escaping from the prison through a 15-metre long tunnel about three weeks ago. Two other men - Bulgarian Dimitar Nikolove Ilieve and Indian Sayed Mohammed Said - were recaptured in Dili, East Timor. Committee head and Democrat party member Benny Harman told the ABC the escape tunnel had clearly been used to traffic drugs in and out of the prison. “There’s a network between members of a drug ring inside this prison and other places,” Mr. Harman said. “The hole is big and long, it could not be finished in two weeks, it would take months - it’s weird if the prison officers didn’t know about it.” The committee members have demanded that a number of prisoners be transferred to other facilities across Indonesia, and expressed shock that there were about 1,300 male inmates in Kerobokan, a facility that was built to hold 300. But few of the more than 470 jails across Indonesia have room for additional inmates. All are unfunded and overcrowded, with estimates more than 80,000 drug convicts are incarcerated across the country. Bali’s police chief, General Petrus Golose, told reporters when Australian escapee Davidson is caught, he could be sent to Nusakambagan. Davidson only had three months to serve of his one-year sentence for passport fraud, but is facing drug charges in Perth. Social media taunts in his name, claiming he is in locations around the world, have angered police. “We will transfer them to Nusakambangan so they can experience the discipline there together with the terrorism convicts,” Inspector General Golose said. He said a reconstruction of the escape would be held soon and a new suspect in the case would then be named. [ABC News July 7, 2017] Police investigate death of Chinese woman on Toekad Rafting trip Balipost.com reports that on Sunday, July 9. 2017, only one day after a Chinese female tourist, Wang Yumei, died in a rafting accident on the Ayung River near Ubud, the operator - Toekad Rafting remains open and is operating normally. Bali Post reports that despite poor weather, the flow of rafting passengers coming to Toekad Rafting remained strong, predominated by Indian and Chinese travelers. Balipost.com quotes Wayan Punayasa and Kadek Karyasa who both work as river guides at Toekad Rafting that on the day at around 1:30 pm they were bringing a group of 13 tourists in two river rafts. The first raft carried 6 passengers led by Wayan Purnayasa, while the second raft was led by Kadek Karyasa carried 7 passengers. 10 minutes into the journey at the first set of rapids, the raft led by Purnayasa, capsized sending the guide and six passengers into the rushing waters. Purnayasa managed to bring 5 of his six passengers to the safety of the riverbank. However, the Chinese woman, Wang Yumani, went missing for a period before her lifeless body was found downstream. When reporters from Bali Post attempted to ask questions in connection with the accident that cost the Chinese woman’s life, all staff refused to comment, reportedly even attempting to eject the reporters from their Kedewatan office. Staff said their supervisors has instructed them to prevent unauthorized photography. Another employee, Budi, complained that reporters were sitting in chairs at the reception intended for guest’s use. Budi also assured the press that every guest taking a rafting trip was insured. The company’s website states that rafting participants are insured to a value of US$50,000. Police who are investigating the incident are interviewing the tourists who were on the trip, the victim’s family, and the company’s employees to determine if criminal negligence played any part in the woman’s death. Police are reported to be focusing on whether the company had standard operating procedures (SOP) and if operating during a period of heavy rain violated the SOP or accepted safety standards. A conviction of criminal negligence could result in 5 years imprisonment. [www.balidiscovery.com July 9, 2017] Baby boy born in Batik Air 23 minutes before landing in Bali A passenger of Batik Air gave birth aboard the plane during a flight from Jakarta to Denpasar, Bali on Saturday (8/7). Ngurah Rai International airport spokesperson Arie Ahsanurrohim said that the passenger had been evacuated to the nearest hospital from the airport. The passenger named Nurul Samiah (28) delivered a baby boy around 23 minutes before landing in Bali. She delivered the baby safely and received assistance from cabin crew and other passengers who are familiar with medical care. The crew later informed the incident to air traffic control in Ngurah Rai airport to prepare an ambulance. After the plane landed in Bali at around 09.05 in the morning (WITA), the medic staff of Ngurah Rai airport later evacuated Nurul and her baby using an ambulance to Kasih Ibu Kedonganan Hospital in Badung Regency, Bali, to receive further medical care. [Antara July 11, 2017] American Paul Hoffman receives 20-month prison sentence American expatriate Paul Anthony Hoffman (57) has been declared guilty by a Denpasar Court of committing a series of armed robberies at convenience stores in Kuta and sentenced to 20 months in prison. The sentence handed down by the Court on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. State Prosecutors has requested a 2.5-year sentence for the robberies that took place in February 2017 that resulted in Hoffman’s arrest on February 16, 2017. It is not clear if Hoffman, who is married to an Indonesian woman and has an infant child, will be allowed to stay in Indonesia or be deported and blacklisted at the end of his prison sentence. [www.balidiscovery. com July 9, 2017] Leading Bali newspaper labels Jalan Poppies II in Kuta as unsafe after dark Balipost.com reports that Jalan Poppies II in Kuta has become a high-crime area each night after dark. The crime situation has become so acute, says The Bali Post, that local residents have now dubbed the area after a famous war zone as “Jalur Gaza” or the “Gaza Stip.” The report alleges that almost every evening the screams of tourists who are the victims of snatch thieves or muggings are heard. One taxi driver, Komang Uban, said he has often seen pickpocketing and muggings taking place that are targeted on foreign tourists. Many tourists who are the targets of such crimes are attacked as they return from local nightspots to their accommodation address on Jalan Poppies II. Uban described how criminal posing as motorbike jockeys offer transportation to tourists, luring them to a quieter location where they are preyed upon by a group of thieves laying in wait. Uban said the frequency of such attacks has prompted local residents to call Jalan Poppies II the “Jalur Gaza.” The thieves will attack any unsuspecting tourist, regardless of sex or age, with even underage children falling victim to muggings. Robert Rahardja, another local resident of Jalan Poppies II in Kuta, confirmed the large amount of criminal activities taking place on Jalan Poppies II, claiming the thieves are both practiced and well-organized. Those who try to resist the muggers are generally beaten into submission by the criminals, said Rahardja. Rahardja complained that there appear to be little efforts by the police to bring the thieves to justice nor are there any sign of routine patrols of the area being undertaken by the police. Flores military cadet murdered in Jimbaran Denpasar Police has rounded up six suspects over the murder of a 20-year-old military cadet in Bali. “We have arrested six suspects,” Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation Unit Commissioner Aris Purwanto confirmed to Tribun Bali on Monday. The main suspect of the six is just 16 years old and is believed to be the child of DPRD regional councilman, national media is reporting. The suspected murder weapon, a curved knife with a black handle, was taken from suspects at the scene, police say. Prada Yanuar Setiawan from Manggarai, Flores was beaten and stabbed to death early on Sunday morning in Jimbaran on the Jl. Ngurah Rai By Pass, directly in front of Taman Griya. Setiawan had been driving with a friend around 5am on Sunday when they were allegedly ambushed then beaten by a teenage motorcycle gang. While the cadet’s friend Johari, was reportedly injured in the face with a broken jaw, Yanuar’s wounds were fatal, with an injury to the right ear and deep stab wounds to his chest. Johari, also from Manggarai, is in intensive care at Denpasar’s Sanglah Hospital. It is not yet known whether or not he will undergo surgery. Setiawan had been set to become commissioned into the Indonesian national military in just a week’s time, on July 17. Police say they are continuing to investigate the case. [Coconuts Bali July 10, 2017] Muslim leader calls for a worldwide boycott of Starbucks A prominent Muslim leader has called for a boycott of international coffee brand Starbucks because its support for gay marriage is ‘not in line’ with Islamic law. Anwar Abbas, the leader of Muhammadiyah, a 30 millionstrong group in Indonesia, said Starbucks’ pro-gay stance threatened the ‘religious and cultured’ core of the Southeast Asian nation. ‘If Starbucks only does business, then fine. But don’t bring ideology here,’ Abbas told Reuters on Saturday. Abbas also called on the Indonesian government to revoke Starbucks’ operating license. Asked why he took a stand against Starbucks, Abbas said he was prompted to speak out after company senior executive Howard Schultz made a pro-LGBT comment. When a Starbucks shareholder complained in 2013 that the company had lost customers because of its support for gay marriage, Schultz said Starbucks embraced diversity and ‘not every decision is an economic decision’. [Daily Mail July 2, 2017] Bali Airport Air Security officers arrested for stealing passenger’s credit card Two employees at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport have been arrested, accused of stealing a traveler’s credit card and putting Rp 68 million worth of charges on it. “The incident happened on June 21, 2017 at Ngurah Rai Airport,” Denpasar Police Superintendent Nyoman Artana told Detik on Thursday. It all apparently started when the traveler got off an AirAsia flight from Jakarta and went straight to his hotel in Bali, leaving his wallet in the plane seat. Realizing he had forgotten his wallet, the passenger went back to the airport to collect his wallet-but failed to notice his card from bank BCA was missing. But not too long after, the unfortunate traveler got news that his credit card balance was up. Way up. “The victim suffered losses of Rp 68,702,080,” says Artana. The card had allegedly been taken by two AirAsia Aviation Security officers. The officers did return the man’s wallet to lost and found, but not before pulling out the credit card and contacting a recidivist fraudster friend to get the card and use it for “shopping charges” of Rp 15 million, Rp 14.5 million, and Rp 14 million, which actually just went into the accounts of the perpetrators, according to police. The card was additionally used for some real-life shopping transactions. First to buy Rp 500k worth of gasoline, then for three televisions, and finally, for some clothing from Levi’s and Nike. After the card hit its limit, the perpetrators allegedly threw it away. The three men (the two AirAsia AVSEC officers and their fraudster friend) have been arrested and are facing charges under Article 363 of the Criminal Code, which carries a minimum of seven years in prison. [Coconuts Bali July 6, 2017] Bali Police arrest two more street gang members caught coercing protection money in Dalung area of Kuta Bali Police continue to crack down on protection rackets and extortion schemes purportedly operated in Bali under the auspices and protection or “People’s Organizations” (Ormas). The most recent action by Bali Police has saw two men arrested as police also seized a sum of money, membership cards in a leafing Ormas, and two weapons. As reported by NusaBali, Hengky Widjaja, the spokesman for the Bali Police, explained that police had received reports of an Ormas member extorting payment from businesses in the Dalung area of South Bali. Responding to reports from the public, police saw a man fitting the description provided enter the Conato Bakery on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. Police arrested a man, identified with the initials IGS, in front of the Bakery. At the time of arrest, police found Rp. 150,000 in the man’s possession that he admitted he had just coerced as a protection payment from the Bakery. Following further interrogation by the police, IGS identified and an accomplice, identified with the initials AS. A short time later, police arrested AS. Preliminary investigations by the police resulted in a confession by the two men that they were collecting money from 15 small restaurants and stores in the Dalung area of South Bali, reaping between Rp. 50,0000 and Rp. 250,000 on each visit. In a month, the men would collect Rp. 1.7 million. The men told police they had been collecting protection money in the area for the past three years. If shop owners refused to pay, the businesses were threatened and terrorized. The two gang members told police that of the Rp. 1.7 million collected each month, Rp. 1 million would be paid to the Ormas and the remainder used to purchase alcohol. After the arrest, police raided the Ormas guard post where they found a further Rp. 350,000, invoices for local businesses and two swords. [www.balidiscovery.com July 9, 2017]
