SPA + HAIR + BEAUTY

INGEBROWS XkXe ^aƟ kag

Eyebrows are a very important aspect of the face. This fact is often underestimated. Eyebrows give the face more expression and character; they are the anchors of your facial features. When your brows match your face they are a great source of beauty. Feeling beautiful, gives you confidence. Beautiful brows are trendy, the flames of which are stoked by the likes of Cara Delevingne. One of Cara’s expressions is: “If you have nice eyebrows, you literally have everything you need in life”. Beautiful brows need a professional method of grooming, improving and styling. INGEbrows is based on a unique measuring method. Every face is unique, so measuring only the shape and thickness of eyebrows is not enough. INGEbrows starts by carefully studying the shape of the face. Is it round, square, oval or heartshaped? There are no less than 12 different facial shapes. The secret to finding the perfect brow to fit your face is based on the principle of ‘expression, balance & rejuvenation’. This is physiognomy -the art of reading faces- whereby the aspects of the beautiful face are identified. A special sugar epilation ensures a sustained removal of unwanted hairs (and it’s both hygienic and hypo-allergenic, to suit even the most sensitive skin). The most beautiful result is attained by coloring the new brow at least one tint darker, for even more expression, ensuring weeks of confidence and pleasure.

INGEBROWS TO STAY Are you not blessed with full eyebrows? Have you depilated too much or have your hairs gone over the years? In that case the INGEBROWS To Stay Treatment the perfect solution. WHAT IS TO STAY? To Stay is a graphical skill in drawing eyebrows. The shape of the eyebrow is based on the INGEbrows methodology and facial morphology. The pigments we work with are dermatologically tested and we always work sterile. Before starting the treatment, an anaesthetic will be administered. The hair strokes are created by the microblade and ombre technology. In a natural direction of the eyebrow, hair strokes are drawn to create a realistic, but especially a unique look (custom made). In case we have only a few hairs we combine different techniques.

WHY TO STAY? Not everyone is blessed with full eyebrows or the ideal shape. Also by the passing of years we might lose some eyebrow hairs and tension of the skin with the consequence the eyebrow loses its shape. In both cases the To Stay Treatment is the perfect solution. The result always looks very natural and enhances expression in the face. Moreover, it is very easy to maintain. HOW DOES IT WORK? We start with the measurement method, where the right shape for your unique face is determined. The next step is to correct color and discuss the method. Micropigmentation is a technique by using various hand tools. The curve of the each hair is essential for the natural effect and the 3-D build-up provides a full eyebrow.

THE RESULT The average result is visible for years but of course depends of the type of skin and maintenance. The treatment takes 2 hours and for the after treatment - 6 weeks later - 1 hour. The advice is to keep this up on a yearly basis. If you follow up the advice and use the corresponding INGEbrows products, the result will remain beautiful throughout the year. WE OFFER 3 TYPES OF INGEBROWS TO STAY TREATMENTS: TOTAL RECONSTRUCTION, FILL IN & MINI. The choice is determined by the amount of hair that contains the eyebrow.

PRICING INGEBROWS MINI IDR 2,000,000 INGEBROWS FILL IN IDR 2,500,000 INGEBROWS TOTAL RECONSTRUCTION IDR 3,500,000 FOLLOW UP The aftercare within 6 weeks for the Total Reconstruction is included and the Follow up treatment after 6 months will start from IDR.1.500.000. It depends of scope of the retouch. BOOKING SERVICES In both salons we have certified Brow Specialists that are highly trained and educated by Inge herself. We strongly recommend booking the INGEbrows services in advance. In case you need more information, don’t hesitate to contact the salon or visit INGEBROWS.COM.

Update

Pekandelan Warung, at the entrance to The Tegenungan Waterfalls at Kemenuh, continues to amaze with the quality of food served at such surprisingly cheap prices. All the key staff are ex the fine dining restaurant, CasCades @ The Viceroy, so maybe that is the reason for their quality even if they do just call it a warung. The dishes are simple, some quite innovative, but all are very well executed. An interesting Cordon Bleu [in a roll, cross sliced] was the first to catch our eye followed by the strangely named O’Mince [crumbed meat balls with a nut of cheese inside] and the Bread Bowl [a hollowed out bread bun filled with chicken curry]. Their signature dish, in true Ubud style, is a version of Crispy Duck, this time marinated and served in a tamarind sauce. Now they have expanded the menu with more interesting items. Top of the list is a Soft Shell Crab, deep fried and crispy, in a yellow coconut milk curry [pictured]. A Thai Beef Salad is very good even if it is a bit more Indonesian than Thai, coming with lettuce, but it still has enough of a Thai kick. Chicken Gigollo uses a de-boned chicken leg [much better than breast], stuffed with a herbed mushroom mix, very tasty! It is such a relaxed environment here, set in a spacious area, inside and out, even with one table up in the overhanging tamarind tree. Easy to eat here for less than Rp.100,000! Ti Moris is Mauritian, now that is different! Found down toward the end of Jln. Batu Belig, Kerobokan, it is a lively and colourful place serving very traditional food from the Mauritius. Mauritian is one of the great Creole cuisines; Mauritian food is a combination of native African, French, Chinese and Indian, with many dishes created that are unique to the island of Mauritius. Indian curries, breads and pickles are cooked alongside slow-braised European daubes and stir-fried noodles from China, all using locally available ingredients. The restaurant is air-con inside with a pleasant rear courtyard where the bar is located, a great plaace for a party! Smoked fish, meats and cheeses are often used particularly in the salads. Starters such as Gato Pima, balls of ground yellow split peas and spring onion, Chicken Curry Bites, Smoked Salmon Blinis and Beef Bone Marrow Brulee. Mauritian Creole mains include Rougaille, a tomato and herbs casserole of pork, chicken or vegetables with mango kutcha and coconut chutney. Vindaye is fish or vegetable in mustard and garlicginger with a chilli dip and peanut chutney. The Lamb Stew and Mutton Curries are real island dishes. Ti Moris is a great newcomer to Bali.

Salazon is the latest restaurant opening with one of those ‘million dollar fit-outs’! Where is it? It is that street with many names. Once just called Jln. Oberoi [on the way to Oberoi], then Laksmana and since then an almost annual change of name. Back in 2001 when Chitralada and Mykonos opened on the street, amongst the rice paddies, and everyone followed before the rents went up, I simplified it by just calling it Eat Street, and that is what is now best known as. Over the years many places have come and gone along this street, some good and some bad. Salazon is the new boy. It has had a magnificent fit-out to market their smoked and wood-fired product. Baked Stracciatella cheese, Chorizo sausages, dryaged Ribs and Salt-baked Mackeral are among their special dishes. Warung Modus is new, and immediately popular, on the Renon loop at Jln. Merdeka. Quite stylish for this area it serves basic Indonesian cuisine but well plated [Bakmi Modus, Bubur Ayam, Soto Ayam, Nasi Goreng Kampung and Ayam Sambal Matah] and a range of very Indonesian style coffees [Devil Caramel, Irish Banana Nut Latte, Black Forest Latte and Coconut in Paradise], Judging by the quality of the cars parked outside each day it is giving the well-healed locals exactly what they want.

Bo & Bun is Asian, highlighting Vietnamese cuisine but with many Thai and other Asian dishes on their interesting menu. Start with Vietnamese entrees; classic Rice Paper Rolls prepared fresh or order your base [pork, chicken, prawn or tofu] and roll your own at the table, with all the extras supplied. The deep-fried variety are different to all else, stuffed with chicken, shredded cabbage, wood ear mushrooms and glass noodles inside a crisp casing, dip in the traditional nuoc cham sauce. Or you can order Korean style Chicken Wings, Thai Fish Cakes [pounded snapper with Kaffir lime, finely chopped snake beans, red curry paste and sweet chilli sauce on the side] or a strange version of Thai’s Gai Hoey Bai Toey, just the chicken wing meat wrapped in pandan leaves. A Vietnamese Salad to share is a must when visiting here, such fresh clean tastes, palate refreshing. The mains are almost all Thai; Chicken Cashews, Chicken & Basil [Kra Pao without the chilli], or Grilled Pork; ribs or chops. Bo & Bun is on the road that changes its name as it passes through different banjars; Jln, Legian, Taman, Kerobokan, etc. Here it is called Jln. Basangkasa [half way between Jln. Kunti and Sunset Road].

Il Tempio is found on Jln. Kartika Plaza, in front of The Bali Garden Hotel. Italian for ‘the temple’ it faces the small Balinese Hindu temple at the street front corner of the property, and serves Italian cuisine, classic but with a modern touch. Now they have welcomed the arrival of Dante Pagliani their new chef. An Italian chef for an Italian restaurant! The food here has always been special but now it promises to go more traditional and maybe regional. NC/R/I-20 Dec 17

Social Media Trends for 2018

The end of the year is the time when many social media experts start to gaze into their crystal balls and predict the coming trends for 2018. In the age of Big Data, these pundits have a good number of studies and surveys to draw from in making their conclusions, so you can trust that these predictions are solidly based on figures, and not crystal balls. Here are some social media marketing trends to watch out for in the coming year. RECRUITING AND JOB HUNTING ON LINKEDIN

LinkedIn is always my first starting point for looking at new trends. LinkedIn is a business-networking site that acts to connect people and help with job searches. Increasingly, LinkedIn is becoming the go-to site for both recruiters and job seekers – this past year, almost 90% of recruiters used the site both to search for and vet candidates for positions they are trying to fill. The advice of any career coach or job search company nowadays is to make sure you have a professional, complete, well-written LinkedIn profile. No longer enough to have a solid resume and well-written cover letter. LinkedIn has positioned itself to take advantage of this growing trend by offering paid services, such as Premium Career. LinkedIn says that candidates with Premium Career are hired twice as quickly as candidates without it. A subscription allows users to message recruiters directly, see who’s viewed their profile, get a breakdown on how they compare to other applicants, have their application moved to the top of a recruiter’s list and take free online video courses on business, tech and creative skills from LinkedIn Learning. LinkedIn also charges recruiters and companies to post job listings on their site. Jeff Weiner, the CEO of LinkedIn, stated that he wants LinkedIn to be the one site that all people head to first for recruiting and job searches in the future. LinkedIn also complies an annual jobs report from all the data they collect, looking at which jobs are growing in popularity or emerging and which are disappearing. INSTAGRAM STORIES Deep Patel, a writer for Entrepreneur, believes that Instagram Stories will become so popular that half of the site’s users will be taking advantage of the feature by the end of next year. Stories (similar to SnapChat) allows a user to share multiple photos and videos in a slideshow format. Stories will last for 24 hours on line before disappearing. According to Instagram, the feature has exceeded 200 million daily uses and continues to grow in popularity. Instagram claims their main site now has 800 million active monthly users and Instagram Stories users just surpassed the total number of SnapChat users. (Snapchat’s quarter-over-quarter user growth has slowed in the face of competition from Instagram and now stands at around 161 million. Snapchat, also facing stiff competition from Facebook features, may be heading down in popularity.) INFLUENCER MARKETING Patel also believes that influencer marketing will continue

C/G/I-22 Nov 17

to grow in popularity. Influencer marketing is, quite literally, when you hire an influencer or celebrity to help sell your products or services. Roughly 90% of businesses that use this type of marketing are confident that it helps their bottom line and plan to continue using influencers. Many brands think that getting a celebrity to promote their brand is the goal of influencer marketing, and often overlook using ‘niche influencers;’ people that may be hugely influential in their chosen niche, and have what is known as a ‘hyper-targeted’ following. For example, Donna Hull, a 66-year-old blogging about adventure travel for Baby Boomers on My Itchy Travel Feet, has tremendous influence in the rapidly growing travel market for older people. In addition to promoting travel products, she is often quoted or featured in articles about older travellers. Andrew Medal, another contributor at Entrepreneur, doesn’t think that businesses know how to take advantage of niche influencers and will have a steep learning curve as they learn how to best use this style of niche marketing. FOCUS ON GENERATION Z

Generation Z, or ‘Gen-Z’, those born after 1998, are now starting to enter college and the workforce, and become consumers. Gen-Z are kids that have grown up in the digital age – they are ‘digital natives’- using digital sites is second-nature to them and where they turn first for advice, information and news and they are used to shopping online. (Over half of them want to work for themselves or set up their own companies.) They are likely to follow influencers in areas that interest them. According to a Goldman-Sachs survey, Gen-Zs number almost 70 million, more than the Millennial generations and have a ‘less idealistic, more pragmatic perspective on the world.’ GenZ’ers control 44 billion of their own spending power and influence household spending in at least 93% of their families.

C/Ho/G-16 Aug 17

LIVE STREAMING Live Streaming started out as a novelty to cover live events and has turned into a mainstream social media-marketing tool for businesses. Anything can be live streamed and any event will have an audience. (Just think of the current obsession in Bali with watching live streaming of Mt Agung as it sits on the boil waiting to erupt.) Keep in mind, writes Matt Sweetwood on Entrepreneur, that ‘your biggest audience will come from replays of a video.’ People watching online want to feel a more authentic connection with what they see, and if they feel they are watching a live event (even later) this resonates as being a more authentic experience.

CANGGU NEWS For it is in Giving That we Receive

Harapan and Bali Mother & Baby House. Some of the funds raised are also to go towards assisting the Mt Agung evacuees.

Bali residents have indeed been asked to dig deep this year, especially in light of the ongoing Mt Agung evacuee crisis, however despite the added drain on pockets from an inevitable drop in tourist numbers affecting the island as a whole, it is heartening to see the spirit of Christmas still alive and thriving. Since it’s inception well over fifteen years ago, the Annual Ladies Charity Christmas Lunch has been a popular end of year event and judging by this year’s turnout on Tuesday December 12th, little has changed. From an idea that grew among a group of like minded long term island residents, this annual lunch has evolved over the years as an opportunity to raise funds for the children of the island’s orphanages; spreading a little cheer among those who have little. Many a Rupiah has been raised over the past decade with much of it in recent times benefiting the children of the Anak Anak Panti Asuhan Damien Orphanage in Alor - an island to the North West of Timor. In an effort to ‘spread the love’ and assist even more children and their families, this generous group of gals formed the charity, Living & Learning in late 2016, enabling them to distribute funds raised from each year’s luncheon to any registered Yayasan (non profit or charitable foundation) dedicated to the growth and education of children. As in previous years, funds generated by this year’s event will again be directed first and foremost to the Alor Orphanage with residual monies to be distributed among other well respected charity groups who have also collaborated with Living & Learning in the past - Bali Jepun, Bali Children’s Foundation,

Petitenget to Pererenan

This year’s annual lunch was once again hosted by intimate Petitenget eatery, Jemme and was well patronised by an enthusiastic group of charitable ladies who were not only looking for a great day out, but more importantly seeking an opportunity to show their generosity to those less fortunate. The dress code was a festive Rudolph red and guests arrived decked out in various shades of crimson. Arms laden with brightly wrapped Christmas gifts for the kids of Alor Orphanage, their purses were also packed with Rupiah to purchase raffle tickets and try their luck at winning their fair share of prizes. And what a swag of prizes there were! Along with tropical island or country getaways and luxurious villa stays, raffle spoils included stunning jewellery, gift vouchers for clothing and hand made gifts, prestige boat cruises, drink and dine vouchers, yoga memberships, hair and beauty and more… Winner winner roast chicken dinner!!! Raffles drawn, cocktails consumed and sumptuous roast lunches devoured, it was time to enjoy the remainder of the afternoon and imbibe in a little more Christmas cheer and there was plenty to go round! The success of charity lunches the likes of these are due

in no small part to the generosity of local businesses and entrepreneurs; many of whom are repeatedly called upon to donate prizes. This year has seen an even bigger demand for charitable donations to help raise funds for the volcano evacuees yet people continue to keep on giving! Huge appreciation must go to those who offered up prizes for the event along with Jemme restaurant for hosting the day. Special mention also goes out to Louise Henry, Jacky Ames and Jane Swinson as well as many others who gave up their valuable time to ensure the lunch was again a success. 17 LESSONS FROM A SURPRISING YEAR – BUT WHAT LIES AHEAD? Let’s wind the clock back to January 1st 2017. Prospects for the world and for investors looked grim. Trump was about to start his term as US President threatening all manner of chaos (he has not disappointed), Kim Jong-un was threatening to up the ante with bombs and rockets (again, he has not disappointed), the reality was creeping in over Brexit and we had the never-ending conflicts in the Middle East. But despite all this the year (so far!) has turned out to be the best for investors since before the Global Financial Crisis nine years ago. Such is the perversity of the financial markets. For this issue I would like to run through the articles I wrote each month (two in August) and review their relevance now we are reaching the end of the year.

July – Will the ‘Rule of 72’ wipe out your savings? The rule of 72 is a method used in finance to quickly estimate the doubling time of an investment through compound interest or loss of purchasing power through inflation. Let’s say you have an investment that grows at 4% per annum with the interest rolled up. If you divide the magic 72 by 4 the answer is 18. Therefore you can say that your investment will double in 18 years. You can also see why cash is currently a poor option. If you are getting say 0.5% interest on your USD or GBP deposit account it will take you 72 divided by 0.5 = 144 years to double your money at current rates! August (1) – Time, not timing is what matters

January: How charges can damage your investment returns As most markets have performed strongly this year the impact of charges (which can be as high as 3% per annum or more) has been less notable. But when returns fall again we will see once more that charges can turn small gains into losses. Fortunately there are now viable alternatives to the higher-charging products and the end of the year could be the best time for investors to explore what alternatives are possible. February: Investing – Staying safe in an unsafe world

This was the story about the hare and the tortoise. Warren Buffett is a good example of the latter. His strategy of careful selection of investments based on value and holding them for the long term has proven far more successful than leaping from one investment to another. C/BT/I-15 Feb 17

August (2) – All expats likely to be affected by CRS As little as a year ago no-one would have thought this possible but it is now a fact that most countries in the world have agreed to the automatic exchange of tax and financial information on individuals.

This article touched on the worrying events threatening the world but also the opportunities. It identified the return of inflation as a future threat and why you cannot rely on annuities and frozen pensions to maintain the same standard of living from year to year. It also warned about the perils we experienced after the financial crisis of turning to speculative ‘alternative’ investments as a means of generating higher returns. Suitable alternative investments do exist but they must be completely liquid and must not be based on speculative assets.

The global agreement that has brought it about is known as the Common Reporting Standard (CRS). Its purpose is to combat tax evasion which has long been a global problem.

Finally, staying ‘safe’ doesn’t mean avoiding all risk and keeping all your savings under the mattress or in a low interest deposit account. Inflation will eat away at your savings just as the mice will eat the money under the mattress. Taking no risks at all is a risk in itself!

Hurricanes affecting the US and the Carribean were a wake up call for all of us to ensure we have adequate insurance for life, health and property.

For Indonesia it is a major coup as it should increase revenue for the benefit of the country. For expats it means that assets held overeas no longer benefit from the confidentiality they once enjoyed. September – Storm devastation – could it happen here?

October – Financial predictions – should we believe them?

March – Coping with compliance Compliance hasn’t gone away since March. It is likely to be with us for ever. Some pointers to ensure you are well prepared include: • Make sure you always have available good copies of your current passport. Leave room on the copies for certification. • Proof of address can be even more problematic in Bali due to the fact that some homes do not have a physical address. Preferred are utility bills, a recent bank or credit card statement. Certified copies of a KITAS, KITAP or KTP or an employer’s letter may be acceptable. • Tax residency declarations are now universal so make sure you have a TIN available or a good explanation as to why you don’t have one. • Proof of source of wealth. Be prepared to provide details and evidence. Retain copies of work contracts, payslips, property sales contracts etc. • Make sure you have easy access to a lawyer, accountant, notary or financial adviser who can certify documents for you.

This article related a cautionary tale about the use of wild predictions to attract customers. In one subscription newsletter the writer urged readers to sell gold immediately as the price was about to fall through the floor. It didn’t. Four months later the same writer warned the US Dollar was about to collapse and to urgently buy gold! The dubious ‘predictions’ of Nostradamus were also mentioned. November – Is it time to take our chips off the table? This article summarised the presentations of a number of leading fund managers and economists at a think tank in London earlier in the month. The speakers’ overall view of the markets was that investment conditions were still favourable although some measures should be taken to prepare for an eventual correction. In short, the chips should stay on the table but with a few adjustments. And that is where we stand as we approach the end of the year. Do let me know if you have any related questions or concerns.

April – Planning for financial disruption Technological disruption is advancing at an alarming rate, with benefits for many but it is also destroying millions of jobs. We are seeing cash gradually disappearing as a means of transacting business (simple example – the automatic toll gates) and the encroachment of ‘cybercurrencies’ such as Bitcoin which threaten all manner of disruption to the financial system.

Have a great festive season and may 2018 be a happy and prosperous year for you.

MONEY MATTERS

May – Time to pile into emerging markets? After years of losses and underperformance all the indications still point to emerging markets being undervalued and ready for another strong rally, with the caveat as always that they are subject to greater volatility than developed markets. June – Which asset will produce the best return? If you know the answer and could get it right every year you would be very rich indeed. The fact is that positions in the ‘league table’ of assets change every year much faster than those in a football league. This year’s winner could easily be bottom of the league next year. Hence the wisdom of diversification and maintaining a balanced range of assets over the years.

Fundraiser in the second week of December. This fundraiser brought the community together, was always visited by many people and got sponsored by numerous businesses in the area. Our club managed to meet the pledge of yearly raising 1000 dollars per Rotary club, in order to help the Rotary Foundation reaching the $35 million challenge.

Rotary Club of Bali Lovina and the Rotary Foundation’s POLIO eradication program We are “this close” to ending polio once and for all but that last bit is maybe the most challenging…… Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary in its commitment to ending polio. Since 2013, the Gates Foundation has matched every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication 2- to -1, up to $35 million per year. Rotary, with matching funds from the Gates Foundation, has contributed more than $1.6 billion to end polio. When Rotary launched its push to end polio in the 1980s, the wild poliovirus crippled nearly 1,000 people every day. Since we started the fight against polio, we’ve reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 percent and reached more than 2.5 billion children with the vaccine. India has been polio free for three years in a row now and there are fewer polio cases today than ever before, but we will not stop until we reach zero. If polio is not eradicated, hundreds of thousands of children could be paralyzed. Global health care costs would rise dramatically, and many children’s quality of life would be drastically diminished.

The commitment of Rotary volunteers worldwide demonstrates the extraordinary role civil society can play in improving global health. Especially every year on the 24th of October, in honor of World Polio Day, Rotary clubs around the globe are doing their part to raise awareness and critically-needed funds to vanquish the disease forever. Our club was formed in 2006, and as it happens that is when the last cases were reported in Indonesia. Now, Indonesia has been polio free for 12 years. But this is the second time as Indonesia was free from polio from 1995 until 2005. Then there was an outbreak centered on West Java with the virus apparently introduced from Sudan – and there were over 200 reported cases. The Indonesian Government, assisted by international groups including Rotary International, responded rapidly with large scale vaccinations in the affected areas. This 2005 outbreak was a wakeup call and reminds us that when polio is re-introduced to a country where the vaccination levels are low, it can spread rapidly. So our club actively supports the global effort to eradicate polio from the remaining countries which are Afghanistan and Nigeria. Total eradication will take a few years, but if we succeed, then our government and other governments can drop polio from their vaccination programs. And no more children will be crippled from this disease. It’s worth fighting for. Once eradicated, polio will become the second human disease ever eradicated – the first was smallpox. This will fulfill Rotary’s promise to create a polio-free world. The Rotary Club of Bali Lovina for many years held a Polio

Our polio fundraisers made our club visible in the area. The fundraisers became a nice tradition during the December holiday season at the time. Our work for the polio eradication program is just an example of how a small club can contribute to bigger goals. Most of our work however is taking place in small scale community service projects, like our eye glasses program for high school students and our elementary school classroom libraries. We are always looking for people interested in joining us in our work by becoming a member or friend to our club. Recently the topic came up jokingly amongst friends, and I admitted to not consuming porn anymore. My friends interrogated me as to why. Apparently it isn’t enough to suspect that some of the people being filmed may be victims. The gist of the conversation was that since there are women who become wealthy at porn, and since I wear clothes and use gadgets that are produced by exploited labor, I am a tool and a hypocrite and therefore totally wrong. I’m still befuddled trying to fix the nice guy stuff, and now I have to defend not watching porn? I don’t require that anyone else forgo watching it; I just find the human trafficking/coercion angle very compelling. I guess that it’s possible I may have implied “and you shouldn’t either,” and that may explain the vehement resistance, but I didn’t expect it. Do I try to let it drop, do I need new friends, or am I just a hypocrite? Dr. ZZ: I totally support your decision not to consume porn, and you don’t have to defend that decision to your friends. If they keep bringing it up and needling you with it, maybe you do need to find new friends - not because of porn or because you’re a hypocrite (you’re not) but because they are behaving like jerks. If it comes up again, you’re well within your rights to say “I’m uncomfortable with this conversation; let’s change the subject.” If they let it go, and they are generally not jerks, and everyone can be trusted to maintain a “let’s agree to disagree” posturing, then let it go. If not, that gives you an important piece of information about your so-called friends, and it may be time to changes circles.

Say What? Question: Last year, I made a conscious decision to stop consuming porn. I stumbled across the argument that you can never be certain if the people being filmed are being coerced. This coupled with the realization that I am a nice guy was enough to make me feel too uncomfortable to continue consuming it.

the end of pencils; there is no morality attached to it, no right and wrong. It is simply the behavior of living life and, at times, being unintentionally off target.

Question: I attended a kecak a couple of weeks ago, and I may have picked up a demon there. I felt rather weird throughout the ceremony, and ever since then, I have done things like run over my cell phone with my car, cut myself fairly substantially with a knife in the kitchen, and fall down a flight of a couple of stairs. I don’t generally believe in demons and such, but people are telling me that no one leaves Bali without coming in contact with evil spirits. Could this be what happened? Could I have picked up an evil spirit? If so, please illuminate me. How do I get rid of this? Dr. ZZ: With all due respect to people who want to believe in evil spirits, there are none. Rather, everything we consider to be “real” in the world is 99.999…% empty space. It’s all an illusion that each of us co-creates based on our fears and our desires. If you were to point “up” right now, for example, and someone in New York were to point up, and someone in Spain and someone in Russia were to point up, you would all be pointing in different directions. Yet people would stake their lives on the belief (the illusion) that they know up from down. Dualities like up and down (tall and short, rich and poor, good and evil, etc.) are all constructs that we were taught by people, who were taught by people, who were taught by people. . . etc.. The word “sin,” for example, is at its origin a term used in archery; it means to miss the mark. This unintentional erring is the reason why there are erasers at

So too it is with everything we call “the real world.” The world is no more real (and no more moral or immoral) than the pixels on a silver screen. Yet we go to the movies and cringe at the edge of our seats while watching the antics before us. Our hearts pound, our hands get sweaty, and we squirm and get emotional. “Oh no! Don’t do it. No! Stop!” we say to ourselves. Then the lights come on, and we go home. There was nothing there. It did not exist. Likewise, everything in life is an illusion and is subject to interpretation. We do not even know up from down; all we know is inside (ourselves) and out. So, when you leave a kecak, or you leave a restaurant, or you wake up in the morning, you get to co-create your life according to the wants, desires, and beliefs you hold to be true, and those wants, desires, and beliefs are in constant flux; they change and molt as quickly as you change your clothes and your preferences. Prefer not to believe in evil spirits, and you don’t have to believe in evil spirits. Believe that it’s all an illusion, and you get to live in a world that is malleable. On the other hand, your careless behavior of the past couple of weeks may be signaling you to pay attention to something in yourself. Perhaps you are moving too fast for yourself or allowing yourself to be too busy or too distracted for your own peace of mind. Perhaps you are attempting to do too many things at once. Search within for the wisdom, and you will find it. That, my friend, is the only place of illumination.

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

At what Age do Children in Bali start learning Gamelan? Part II As I stated in my last article, many kids in Bali these days learn traditional music simply because their parents want them to. Yes, pushy parents are not a monopoly of America or China – they in fact exist in Indonesia too. The motivation is slightly different though – the parents who actively coerce their kids to learn traditional music through the motivation of competitions, prize money and so forth are genuinely concerned the younger generation will be more interested in Western music rather than Balinese gamelan music. The government knows the competitions can motivate families to take part and compete with each other, so that is one of the ways that they bait Balinese to learn traditional music.

These competitions attract kids of all ages, with the youngest starting around six years old. Over recent years, females have dominated the gender wayang competitions – in fact, I think it’s fair to say that these days there are more young female than male players in Bali. Our sons have been playing gamelan here in Bali since they were less than two, with our eldest composing for the gamelan selonding ensemble when he was just six. We don’t enter them in competitions; however, as we hope that by surrounding them with instruments and playing them together with both our nuclear and our extended family their creativity will come naturally: enjoying the music for the music rather than just to satisfy their parents. I’ve noticed that naturally they sing gamelan music as they do other activities, and even beat-box the different ensemble parts when we are going somewhere in the car. At schools, gamelan is normally introduced at elementary level when the kids are around six or seven. Western music by contrast is introduced in the form of melodicas at kindergarten level. This gap in indigenous music education has inspired me to create light, portable, virtually indestructible, iron-keyed gamelan instruments tuned to a Balinese scale to introduce indigenous music to kindergarten and even playgroup students. I hope that schools will consider to incorporate these instruments into their performing arts curriculum soon and that the government will support my idea. This will also mean that kids are introduced to all different types of Balinese gamelan ensembles, not just the ones competed for, and encourage a natural interest in the art-forms and appreciation of the value of indigenous Balinese music from early on in life. Check out Mekar Bhuana’s range of entry level “practice” instruments on http://www.mekarbhuana.com/balinese-gamelan/balinese-gamelaninstruments/Practice-Instruments Copyright © Kulture Kid 2017 You can read all past articles of Kulture Kid at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

In spite of both books’ depressing and questionably true content, there is a consistent underlying ring of truth behind Malcolm Scott’s costly hard-earned lessons on how to deal with and interact with Indonesians, their cultural characteristics and social prejudices as well as the utter unpredictability of life in Bali. The chapter “How to Take a Villa from a Westerner,” for example, he suggests should be read by anyone who claims that “my Balinese friend is like family and never asks for money.”

He often boasts about how streetwise he is, but is drawn to nasty hookers, sets himself up for failure and seems surprisingly gullible at times. 29 Tactile Tattoos: The Ultimate in Wearables by Ines Wynn Imagine accessorising your outfit with a gold leaf sticker on your arm, leg -or any other body part for that matter- and using it as a touch pad much like the one on your smartphone in order to control your mobile devices, to display information or store data. How about a skin bracelet that acts as a music controller? A bit of body art that tells you when you are anxious, in the mood or running a fever? A skin-based antenna that lets you communicate with your mobile devices like a wearable Blue Tooth? It sounds farfetched, futuristic and a tad techno-rad but it’s definitely coming to a tattoo parlour near you. A few years ago, the Los Angeles Times published an article entitled ‘Excuse me, my tattoo is ringing’. It reported that Nokia had filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a tattoo that would send a perceivable impulse to your skin whenever someone tried to contact you on the phone. As described in the patent application, the phone would communicate with the tattoo by emitting magnetic waves and the tattoo would act as a receiver, setting off a tactile response in the user’s skin. I’m not sure if Nokia ever marketed this tattoo and my curiosity was still peaked so a bit of googling quickly provided an update on those tactile tattoos. There has not exactly been a flurry of activities on that front but I did find a few promising developments. A collaborative project called DuoSkin between MIT Media Labs and Microsoft is creating on-skin or epidermal electronics with three types of interfaces that can sense touch input, display information and perform wireless communications with other electronic devices. These on-skin tattoos are very different from the wearable electronic gadgets embedded in clothing or these ungainly strap-on fitness trackers that can measure your biomedical vital signals, monitor glucose levels or count walking or running distances. These devices limit themselves to health, medical and wellness hacks. With the advent of on-skin electronics, the range of applications is vastly expanded. DuoSkin tattoos are non-invasive temporary tattoos that perform as interfaces, letting them act as input for smartphones or computers, display data via thermochromatic layers or initiate wireless communication by using a short-range antenna. They control smartphones, computers, and devices via touch. The process uses gold leaf, commonly found in craft stores, as a conductor in order to create adhesive decals emulating three different classes of ‘devices’. The input device turns your skin into a track pad or music player controller using traditional user interfaces such as buttons, sliders and 2D trackpads. The output device is a thermochromic skin patch that changes colour according to the wearer’s emotions or body temperature. The third is a communications device using a short range NFC (near field communications) component that includes small microchips to store data that can be read by phones or other NFC devices nearby.

In order to create these ultra-thin on-skin stencils, the process uses durable, skin-safe gold leaf decals which can be pressed on to the skin. Gold leaf acts as a conductor and is combined with a thin tattoo paper silicone as the flexible substrate that attaches to the skin. It is easy to attach, easy to remove and clean. The stencil acts like an electrical circuit. These decals are fabricated in a multiple-step process using computer based graphic design software to create an actual stencil of the circuitry, applying gold leaf as the conductive material and applying flexible surface-mount electronics on thin temporary tattoo paper. After completing the circuitry, the souped-up decal is applied to the user’s skin through watertransfer which is a process similar to a temporary tattoo. The tattoos can be a DIY job. That is, you can create your own stencils and doll them up according to your artistic inclinations, your personal style and identity. You can design decals with geometric, tribal or your choice of patterns. The process of creating your own personal on-skin user interface is relatively easy and the costs are very modest. Alternatively you can elicit the assistance of a temporary tattoo parlour where someone else could custom-design the decal of your dreams. And there you have it.Your skin transformed into an interactive medium for interfacing with all your other electronic gadgets. You can wear it permanently or peel it off after a time when no longer needed. These patches definitely provide a simpler, less restrictive way to monitor your vital signs, or let you command a computer with simple movements. And they can even be embedded in another temporary tattoo. Early prototypes of electronic tattoos were similar to traditional tattoos which are invasive interventions performed on the skin. These tattoos were etched directly into the skin with digital ink or electronic ink and contained encapsulated microspheres embedded in the skin. Philips Design did research on tattoo forms based in digital inks which respond not only to touch, but also to neural and endocrinal variations. Several university research departments have developed medical applications for the touch tattoos such as applications for controlling Parkinson’s symptoms or prostheses. MIT researchers developed silk-silicon LEDs that act as photonic tattoos. These tattoos show blood-sugar readings, allowing a great range of mapping the physiological functions. All these tattoos still require that sensors are inserted under the skin. From embedded technology it was a logical step to the development of a new dynamic and interactive tattoo using technological adhesives without invasive procedures. These smart tattoos may look like body art or fashion statements but they cleverly disguise electrical components that make the tattoos interactive. Future developments of this technology could veer in many different directions. There is simply no end to imagining possible applications. It could serve as a substitute for identification, enable you to buy subway cards or movie tickets, even function as a virtual wallet. Your arm could soon become your miniature keyboard on the go.

By staying in a positive frame of mind the DNA can be changed to make your body healthier and create abundance in your life. I was ushered into the healing room at the back which was lit with a blue light. Two large mats lay on the floor covered with a batik sarong with the chakras painted on them. The information on the card was obviously translated from Indonesian and sounded in the realms of miraculous healing. “Such as healing serious illness or disease such as: HIV, AIDS, Cancer, infection, mental disorder like schizophrenia, psychosomatic, addiction, narcotics and drug addicts. Also for mastering the Kundalini technique applying the Third-Eye to see viruses, germs and organ of body transparently.” Aren’t we all looking for a miracle to cure our health problems? I asked Lita and Made many questions about what they did. Made had been giving healing sessions for six years and Lita for four. Lita asked if I ever had energy healing before. I told her yes many times for many years. When I asked where this technique of healing originated from, they proudly pointed to their grand master’s portrait hanging above the entrance, Rony Irianto from Jakarta. He had started out using Reiki but then created his own technique called Q-RAK Reiki which has evolved into Q-RAK Cultivation. He’s published a book on his healing technique

Volcano Relief - Who’s Doing What and How You Can Help And still we wait, at least at time of writing, for a possible Big Bang. Bear in mind there’s a week between filing my column and holding a copy of this paper in your hand. A lot can happen in seven days, especially under a dyspeptic volcano.

MAR is also working with groups to identify and establish sustainable livelihoods, and provide education on health and hygiene needs such as building of toilets and hand washing stations, dengue prevention, ash protection and waste management.

Imagine a knock at your door, an order that you and your family must leave your home within the hour. Carry what you can, you may take no animals, you must provide your own transport. You have little money, one old motorcycle, very little experience of the world outside your remote banjar. For anyone this scenario would be very disturbing. To a Balinese, so deeply rooted in place, it is devastating.

MAR collects donations through Kopernik via its website or at Bank Mandiri, Branch: KCP Ubud 14510, Account Name: Yayasan Kopernik, Acct: 145-00-1804889-8 SWIFT: BMRIIDJA

The latest government estimation is about 70,000 people displaced in 237 evacuation centres (these numbers are constantly changing). Evacuees are cold, wet, hungry and distressed. The government and private groups are struggling to provide toilets, safe drinking water, shelter, food and basic household and health necessities. © Nadji Nomoto

Agung Siaga Community is a group of about 10 people organised in pods, connecting donors with the needs of evacuees. Many camps are still not receiving regular deliveries of food, and Agung Siaga (AS) uses its donations to purchase and deliver rice, fresh produce, personal hygiene kits and much more. Team members learn of needs through the constantly updated MAR maps and other sources. “Cooking gas is a huge issue,” a spokesperson told me. “Some camps have not had fresh food for two weeks, and often they have no gas to cook it with when it does arrive. There are many elderly and babies needing mattresses to keep them off damp floors. Evacuees also need menstrual pads, toothbrushes, bedding, towels. These people have left everything behind, indefinitely: homes, animals, possessions, livelihoods. They are anxious and stressed.” Rio Helmi (who is constantly in the field) and the Agung Siaga team take detailed field notes, but the situation is complicated and constantly changing which makes coordination very challenging.

The government has established a number of camps, about half in Karangasem, but many evacuees have chosen mandiri (independent) camps which can range in size from several hundred people to a community meeting hall with just a few families. Some families are staying with friends/family members. Many moved to banjars in which their grandparents sheltered in 1963. Every day new mandiri camps spring up. Bali has always been a great-hearted place in times of disaster. After the Bali bomb in 2002 and again in 2005 after the catastrophic tsunami in Aceh, Indonesians, foreign residents and tourists banded together to raise resources and deliver appropriate support to the victims. I’ve gathered information on some of the Ubud-based initiatives involved in disaster relief. Apologies to any I have missed. Mount Agung Relief is a collaboration between Kopernik, IDEP, Bumi Sehat, Bali ZEN, Rucina Ballinger, Rio Helmi and Green School parents. It coordinates closely with government bodies as well as other civil society initiatives, including Agung Siaga and Bali Surf Outlets. “We obtain data from the coordinators we have been working with in the field to identify which camps have current needs,” a Mount Agung Relief (MAR) spokesperson told me. “MAR’s core focus is on community education and policy advocacy. We also provide water filters and training on their maintenance and cleaning, distribute face masks and help communities develop sustainable infrastructure.”

“At Agung Siaga we are very responsive, getting food to people,” says Riri, a volunteer from Jakarta. “Food costs about Rp. 10,000 per person per day, so cash donations are very important to us. We get data from MAR about what camps need food, then we purchase and deliver it, sometimes to multiple camps. While there, we make detailed field reports which MAR uses to update its logistics map. Camp conditions vary widely. Most have very few toilets. People are living in other people’s verandahs, many are in bale banjars with tarps for walls. Some of the host villages are already feeling the strain of supporting evacuees. “It’s important to empower the evacuees going forward, so we are starting to encourage youth groups to organise transport to Ubud to pick up the food donations. We’re talking to evacuees about creating portable catfish ponds they can take with them when they move.” Because many of them will be moving; they are in camps that are vulnerable to direct damage in case of an eruption or may be isolated from relief by lahar flows. Agung Siaga needs Indonesian volunteers to coordinate food orders and deliveries, to coordinate logistics, to make field reports/assessments and to design sustainable livelihoods projects. Donate to Agung Siaga PAYPAL Address: mountagung.ubud2@gmail.com. GOFUNDME www.gofundme.com/helpagungevacuees. IDEP Foundation has been training Indonesians in disaster risk management since 2005. During Phase 1 of the Mount Agung evacuation, IDEP collaborated with its nationwide network of partners to provide assistance. The Foundation arranged evacuation and mitigation training that also worked

at a community development level for people who were not yet evacuees but lived in very dangerous zones. IDEP Foundation distributed 390 packs of multifunctional Family Buckets containing food, masks and other essentials to 20 evacuation centers. IDEP facilitated a workshop for Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction and capacity building for representatives from volunteer organizations and groups which have been engaged in responding to Mount Agung. It also trained 25 people in evacuation camps to collect data and perform field assessments for Community Based Disaster Management, and continues to help prepare communities for disaster. Please donate to IDEP Foundation at http://www.bit.ly/IDEPFUND. Bumi Sehat in Nyuh Kuning has taken in 120 evacuees who will be with them indefinitely. They are cooking for themselves in two kitchens, and urgently need fresh vegetables, eggs and tofu/tempe. The older children are in school but boredom is an issue. Donations of food, children’s games and art supplies, used clothing, shoes, bedding and menstrual pads can be dropped off at Bumi Sehat. Rotary is providing valuable practical assistance. Rotary International District 3420 Disaster Team Relief assessed the potential long-term implications of the Mount Agung eruption. Members created and distributed instructive brochures and colouring books on social media and personally to schools and camps, and have built toilets and showers in five camps. They have distributed 1000 survival kits in light weight back packs and are fundraising for a total of 10,000. You can donate through Paypal rotaryd3420disasterrelief@ gmail.com or Bank BCA account #6685399996 account name Rotary Klub Bali Kuta Yayasan S/C CENAIDJA. Rio Helmi (who is constantly in the field) and the Agung Siaga team take detailed field notes, but the situation is complicated and constantly changing which makes coordination very challenging. There may still be tens of thousands of people in the danger zone. When lahar flows begin in earnest bridges and roads will be compromised, and evacuation centres will be cut off from relief deliveries. I know there are other private initiatives out there; these are the ones I am aware of in Ubud. Please share this information widely. If you know of a camp that’s not getting any support, ask the local coordinator to contact Mount Agung Relief or send a message on the FB page.

Local News US man on the run after escaping notorious Bali prison A US man convicted on drugs charges escaped Bali’s notorious Kerobokan jail in an early morning jailbreak with another American prisoner who was caught almost immediately, an official said. The pair made a break from the Indonesian resort island’s main prison by cutting a hole in the roof with a hacksaw, authorities said. It was not clear how they obtained the tool. Police are now scouring the palm-fringed island and handing out pictures of escapee Christian Beasley, a 32-year-old arrested in August for carrying 5g of hashish. Foreigners are regularly arrested for drugs offences on Bali. Beasley was awaiting a sentencing in his case. It was not immediately clear how much jail time he was facing, but Indonesia has some of the world’s toughest drugs laws, with the death penalty available in some trafficking cases. Beasley’s accomplice in the escape, convicted thief Paul Anthony Hoffman, 57, was apprehended before he could make good on the escape. “Paul was immediately recaptured by the locals who saw him trying to escape while Christian, who climbed up before him, managed to run away,” Kerobokan chief warden Tonny Nainggolan told AFP. Hoffman is serving a 20-month sentence for robbing a number of convenience stores at knifepoint. Kerobokan houses some of the country’s most notorious and high-profile inmates, including members of the so-called Bali Nine which plotted to bring heroin into Australia via Bali. Two members of the group have been executed. Jailbreaks are common in Indonesia, where inmates are often held in unsanitary conditions at overcrowded and poorly guarded prisons. In May, more than 200 inmates staged a mass breakout from an overcrowded prison on Sumatra island, while last year a convicted child murderer escaped from jail by putting on a woman’s Muslim veil, make-up and sunglasses and walking out past unsuspecting guards. [The Malay Mail Online December 11, 2017] Move to blacklist criminals moving overseas to set up enterprise Some Australians travelling overseas this Christmas could find themselves on a “black list”, turned around and sent home under a state and federal police move to block criminal suspects plying their enterprise offshore. The move is a marked shift in Australian policing tactics, where “disruption” is now to be used in lieu of just seeking traditional prosecutions. It comes as joint operations by the Australian Federal Police and overseas counterparts look at breaking up criminal elements of more than a dozen Outlaw Motor Cycle Gangs setting up operations overseas, notably Thailand, Indonesia and Dubai. Already three members of the Finks group were turned around in Bali in the past fortnight while another three Hells Angels members in Thailand were raided, arrested and set to be deported for a range of alleged criminal offences. Thai police said they had a target list of Australians to arrest for several alleged offences, including some based on intelligence on their criminal exploits including a murder, and they would now be “black-listed” and not let back into the country. News Corp Australia understands there is a progressive role of black-listing of Australian suspects with a number of South East Asian countries based on a threshold of intelligence-based evidence as opposed to material to make an actual arrest and charge. Indonesian authorities including police and immigration have advised they are particularly looking at how to make it harder for known Australian criminal suspects to enter places like Bali, and have them black-listed for the whole of Indonesia. AFP’s organised crime chief Commander Bruce Hill played down the list but confirmed the AFP was just advising through intelligence exchanges and leaving it up to Asian counterparts to make black list determinations particularly on OMCGs. “We are working very closely with regional partners and the AFP continues to share intelligence on OMCG members,” he said. “The Asian countries make an assessment whether that person is a threat to their local people. These countries can make an independent decision on whether they want to blacklist that person or not. Once you are black-listed you cannot enter or remain in that country.” Cmdr Hill said he was keen to get away from the traditional paradigm and wanted to disrupt criminal enterprises attempt to set up narcotics and money laundering operations offshore and creating a nexus of other foreign nationals to gather for illicit profits. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton declined to comment. As reported yesterday, Asian authorities are moving to break up the largely Australian-led OMCGs setting up in their country particularly Thailand that is moving toward raids and law changes. [Herald Sun December 10, 2017] Bali volcano: Relief effort underway to support thousands of displaced people In Tianyar village in Bali, thousands of people are waiting to find out when, if ever, they will be able to return to their homes. As Mount Agung continues to spew clouds of white and dark gray ash as far as 7,600m into the atmosphere, Indonesians fear the volcano could be on the brink of eruption. The 3,000m volcano has shown a marked increase in activity over the last few weeks, stoking fears of an eruption similar to the one in 1963 that killed more than 1,000 people. Residents living within a 10km radius of the crater have been forced to leave their homes, with as many as 65,000 people living in shelters, according to Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency. Organisations like the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) have risen to the challenge, seeking to provide shelter and food to thousands of displaced people. “I am proud of the resilience of these thousands of people, but sad that they cannot risk going home until Mount Agung has erupted or gone back to sleep,” East Bali Poverty Project founder David Booth told The Independent. The EBPP has been providing shelter and food to more than 750 people forced to flee the Desa Ban area, which sits just north of Mount Agung. “My heart was overflowing with both joy and sadness but also pride for the dignity our communities, from the young infants barely walking to the very old and wrinkled who all were steadfast and shared smiles.” One woman who has benefited from EBPP’s services described having to move from shelter to shelter while she was pregnant, before being forced to have a cesarean section in order to have her baby safely. “Now, the baby is running a fever and has an infected umbilical cord due to the lack of washing supplies in the camp.” The mother, Wayan Tangkih, told photographer and Photographers Without Borders founder Danielle Da Silva she had to move from shelter to shelter after being forced to leave her home over fears of Mount Agung erupting. “I was really panicked, I was crying and traumatised,” Ms Tangkih told Ms Da Silva. “I have to bring along this little baby at such a young age. It worries me every day.” [Independent December 8, 2017] A sleeping or a napping giant? The head of the Central Agency for the Mitigation of Geological Disasters (PVMBG), Devy Kamil Syahbana, says the Mount Agung Volcano has suddenly become quieter as compared to its recent period of intensified seismic activity. As reported by Metrobali.com, Devy said the newfound calm might mean that the molten lava that has made its way from deep below the mountain to the surface of the crater has hardened and solidified. Explaining that once lava is exposed above ground to the atmosphere it will quickly cool and harden. Thus if lava resides for an extended period in the crater is will both thicken and harden over time. “If (the lava) hardens its mobility also decreases,” explained Devy on Sunday, December 3, 2017, during an interview at the Mount Agung Observation Post at Rendang, Karangasem. He went on to explain that the question has now become whether or not the upward march of the lava has slowed because the mountain has depleted its energy source or is the lava’s pathway only blocked momentarily by lava that has hardened into a crust. Based on the recent experience of Mount Rinjani in Lombok, Devy related how, following an eruption of that volcano, he climbed to the peak to take lava samples. Saying: “I once climbed Rinjani to gather a lava sample a few hours – less than 24 hours - after an actual eruption. The lava had already begun to cool. How the lava cools depends on the surrounding atmosphere.” Continuing to relate his experience with Mount Rinjani, based on the measurements of sulfur dioxide (SO2) found within the mountain’s lava he detected a dramatic decrease in that gas – amounting to a 20x reduction than the SO2 present during the eruption. The reduction of SO2 can happen when the energy driving the eruption has dissipated or then the lava channels have somehow become blocked and can portend a coming eruption. Measurement done at Mount Galeras in Mexico just before it erupted also showed reduced levels of SO2 at the mountain’s peak. Merpati in Central Java also showed reduced levels of SO2 in 2010 prior to a major eruption. [www.balidiscovery.com December 3, 2017]

Bali still top destination for Australian travelers Bali is still the favorite destination for tourists from Australia. Some Australians have even considered the Island of the God as their second home, which has made Bali’s tourism survive despite the frequent activity shown by Mount Agung. “Indonesia is still Australia’s most extraordinary tourist destination because 90 percent of Australians end up in Bali,” said Emil Hardy Ridwan, Country manager Visit Indonesia Tourism Officer (VITO) in Melbourne, on Monday, December 11. He said that the top three destinations preferred by Australians are New Zealand, Bali, and the United States. However, their visits to New Zealand is to visit family members or relatives. “Bali is still their favorite tourist destination,” he said. In fact, when Ngurah Rai airport was closed during December 26-27 as it was affected by Mount Agung’s volcanic activities, Australian travelers were not too concerned. “Especially young Australians, or independent travelers, they didn’t seem to care much. Although, many of them that have a family have mostly refrained from traveling to Bali,” said Emil. According to Emil, Melbourne based airline Jetstar is still struggling to cope with flight demands to Bali, despite already increasing their flight schedule from seven times a week to 12-times a week. “However, the capacity of Bali’s airport could not accommodate the huge demand,” said Emil. Emil said that Australia is a large market potential that must be maintained. Indonesia is eyeing on attracting 1.8 million tourists from Australia before year’s end. [Tempo December 11, 2017] Bali’s rumbling volcano slashes peak Christmas tourist numbers Imran Ameer booked tickets to spend 10 days on the beaches of Lombok, near Bali, with his pregnant wife and 17-month-old daughter. Then Mount Agung in eastern Bali erupted, forcing the 28-year-old from Melbourne to scrap that plan. He’s not alone. With a possibility of the volcano erupting again any time, scores of hotel rooms and flights to Bali have been left empty into the year end, casting doubt on one of the resort-island’s busiest seasons. Five numbers show what’s at stake: 25 - About 25 percent of hotel rooms in Bali are currently occupied, compared with as much as 80 percent in December last year, according to Tjok Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, chairman of Bali’s association of hotels and restaurants. The island’s tourism industry loses about 250 billion rupiah ($18 million) a day as a result of hotel room and other cancellations, Sukawati said. 70 - Tourism in Bali - named the world’s top travel destination by TripAdvisor Inc. this year - directly and indirectly accounts for about 70 percent of the island’s income, according to the tourism board. 4.5 - Tourism is important not just for Bali but also for Indonesia’s economy. The nation’s tourism revenue - much of which is generated on the resort island - accounted for 4.5 percent of gross domestic product last year, figures from the Tourism Ministry show. The ministry says it’s maintaining its projections for the contribution to rise to 5.5 percent this year and 6.5 percent in 2018. 300 - Indonesian flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia canceled more than 300 flights because of closures at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport and the Lombok International Airport after the volcanic eruptions. Services to Bali account for 30 percent of the airline’s daily total. 1 million - Garuda lost about $1 million a day when the airports were shut, according to estimates by Shukor Yusof, founder of Endau Analytics, an aviation consulting firm. Shukor estimated that PT Lion Mentari Airlines, Indonesia’s biggest airline, lost about $500,000 a day. Almost a million people had been expected to visit Bali in December and January combined, said Anak Agung Gede Yuniartha Putra, the chief of Bali’s tourism office. Now, expectations are for no less than half the earlier projection. [Bloomberg December 12, 2017] Bali Police investigate joget bumbung, dirty dancing incident after videos go viral Police in Bali have launched an investigation into a series of videos, showing a group of men dressed in motocross gear, who took the flirtatious Balinese dance joget bumbung too far, as they outright humped and harassed the Balinese dancers performing at an event. To make matters worse, it turns out the inappropriate videos were recorded at a fundraiser event for the benefit of Mount Agung evacuees in Les Village, Tejakula, Buleleng on Nov. 19. Buleleng Police Criminal Investigation Unit Chief Mikael Hutabarat says that police have already questioned eight witnesses related to the “pornographic” incident, including the dancers and event organizers, but the case is actually being managed by provincelevel police, Polda Bali. Indonesia has strict anti-porn laws and spreading or exhibiting content deemed as pornography is punishable up to 12 years in prison for adults and it seems politicians in Bali have been pushing law enforcement to classify this as a pornography case. Bali’s Regional Council DPRD even met late November to discuss the matter. “This is dangerous. It’s a threat to Balinese generations, Balinese culture even. This can be said to be a Joget Porno,” said Professor Komang Astika, cultural advisor chair to the Bali DPRD. But police have not yet formally charged anyone. “We are still waiting for the investigation results from Polda Bali,” Hutabarat told Merdeka on Tuesday. “The case is now being handled by Polda Bali because it involves the Cyber Crimes Team,” Hutabarat explained. Joget bumbung is a controversial dance in Bali because unlike many traditional Balinese dances, it’s done for entertainment purposes, rather than religious ones. Bali’s governor has previously even tried to get the dance banned, while a joget festival was held in Denpasar earlier this year in an attempt to try and sanitize the risqué dance. In joget bumbung, female dancers move seductively and invite audience members to join, but what we saw in the viral videos under investigation was downright uncomfortable and appalling, as men from the crowd forced themselves upon the dancers, latching on and gyrating-all the while as children looked on.
