Update Ryoshi, at their new Sanur Address, at the southern end of Jln. Danau Tamblingan [between Soul in a Bowl and Massimo] offer the first Chirashi Sushi Bar in Bali. Chirashi Sushi is the way that sushi is often served in the home in Japan. A bowl is layered with sushi rice and topped with a selection of sliced vegetables, meat and/or fish, although just vegetables in the most common. Now at Ryoshi Sanur at lunchtime you can concoct your own bowl of Chirashi Sushi at the Salad and Chirashi Sushi Bar. However the main attraction at all Ryoshi restaurants in Bali is for the availability of their made to order standard sushi and sashimi from their endless supply of freshly caught fish, the most important ingredient. Eating pre-made refrigerated sushi is akin to eating plastic.
Blanco par Mandif continues to receive rave reviews
at its incredible location, virtually hanging off the cliff, above the river, underneah the Antonio Blanco Museum in Ubud. For chef, Mandif Warroka, this is nothing new as fame has followed him at almost every step he has taken on his culinary journey. In the kitchen he is an incredible talent, and that is well showcased here at this restaurant in partnership with the museum owner Mario Blanco. It is fine dining at its best. The degustation menu can be either 7 or 9 courses, as you wish, a combination of exotic seafood and meat dishes. Blue Swimmer Crab with Muscat grapes and cultured coconut, Hotatei Scallop Papinyo, calamondin and kenari dressing and a cucumber granite, Yellow Fin Tuna, Nato Undis, with gohu and tomato and Sea Urchin-smoked Quail Egg, dumpling skin, coconut kalio curr with sweet potato.Followed by 14 Day Aged Smoked Duck with tamarind & beetroot sauce, pineapple and maize and Aged Wagyu with bumbu rica, maranggi and smoked aubergine. There is also a Vegetarian degustation menu or you can order a la carte. An evening to remember!
Ninety-One is new in the ever-changing Canggu scene
10th Table has taken Lovina by storm. Not only is it a top
end luxurious restaurant for those special occasions but after only being open for a couple of months the chefs are already producing new exotic dishes to excite on an ever improving menu. An example is their new Millefeuille of Duck Confit and onion marmalade. It is served with a grape reduction. Classic French with a twist, it certainly whets the appetite, and puts an overdue trip up north higb on the agenda!
where another restaurant seems to open almost every day. This one is found on Jln. Pantai Batu Bolong and has a Middle Eastern atmosphere. It has the annoying habit of having separate menus and available times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is easy to understand why they do this but in a tourist locati0on such as Bali, all day dining is preferable. However all the menus are quite extensive. For breakfast it is all quite modern and trendy. Choices can be simple, such as Salted Caramel French Toast or Warm Banana Bread with coconut, peanut butter, banana and honeycomb. The Pesto Sourdough is with avocado, buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes and basil. There are also egg dishes and quite complex combos they are. The Grilled Halloumi and Tabbouleh Salad is with a poached egg as is the Zucchini Mint Fritter and Smoked Salmon and the Parmesan Potato Cakes. The lunch offerings are mostly middle-eastern; Lamb Kofta, Sumac-spiced Squid, Spiced Chicken with avocado and sumac aioli and flat bread straight from the oven. The dinner

service begins at 5.00 p.m., and highlights larger plates, meant to be shared, all with the spices of the middle-east. Something very different to add the many dining choices we now have here in Bali.
Crumb and Coaster is a glass house on Jln. Benesari. Popular for breakfast which is served all day. Great Corn Fritters served with an avocado salsa and baby spinach, Thai sweet chilli, add bacon and/or scrambled eggs. There is a healthy Yoga Breakfast and a half healthy Big ‘Surfer’ Breakfast, a traditional Eggs Benedict and a super healthy Avocado Mash with tomato and feta on sourdough. The main menu includes many snacks; a crunchy Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich with coleslaw on sourdough, Baguette stuffed with pilled pork in tangy BBQ sauce and Tuna Melt Croissants. The Lunch/Dinner menu includes a Chinese style Beef in Black Bean, from Singapore a Seafood Laksa, and the English staple, Fish & Chips. From Italy a Ravioli stuffed with spinach and ricotta, sage butter sauce and sprinkled with Parmesan. Local cuisine can be curries, rendang and sate. They also have a big range of juices, smoothies and coffees. Aperitif @ The Viceroy has now established itself as one of Bali’s ‘must visit’ restaurants for any serious foodie. Their constant search for excellence never seems to stop. They have now added anther option to their prime degustation dinner menu, a Kagoshima A5 Wagyu with tarragon, black garlic, pickled shallot and potato. It lists as an alternative to their wonderful Venison Wellington, which would always be my first selection, however it does extend your choices. Jack Fish is one of Sanur’s many seafront restaurants/
warungs. As the name suggests their specialty is seafood and it is very popular. Run by a local Balinese fsmily, everything is prepared onsite, the sambals; Matah and Merah perfect for the freshly grilled fish. Budget prices only add to the attraction.

Local News President decrees the use of Indonesian language in branding products and services Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has issued a decree (Perpres Nomor 63 Tahun 2019) requiring the use of the Indonesian language for naming products and services in Indonesia. As reported by CNN Indonesia, the decree signed on September 30, 2019, requires the use of the Indonesian language on goods made by Indonesian legal entities. The requirement does not apply for trademarks and branding originating from a foreign licensee. In addition to requiring branding of products using the Indonesian language, services offered in Indonesia must also be branded with the Indonesian language. Moreover, Indonesian must also be used in printed specifications, materials listings, instructions, assembly guides, user manuals, possible side effects, measurements, date of manufacture, and date of expiration. Buildings must also be labeled with Indonesian names - a requirement that will include apartments, complexes, office buildings and shopping centers - whether these structures are owned by foreign or Indonesian entities. This will include hotels, accommodation addresses, airports, seaports, terminals, stations, factories, monuments, dams, tunnels, workplaces, meeting facilities, entertainment centers, concert areas, and housing estates. Exceptions will be granted to the naming rule for buildings deemed to have historical value, cultural legacies, or compelling religious histories. In setting out the new rules, the President has not stipulated penalties for those who fail to follow the language imperative. [balidiscovery.com November 12, 2019] Sydney woman sentenced after tragically killing teen in Bali motorbike crash A Sydney woman who moved to Bali to escape the grief of losing her husband in an accident has been sentenced to three months and 15 days in jail after tragically killing a teenage motorcyclist in a head-on collision. Susan Leslie O’Brien was found guilty of one count of negligent driving causing the death of 19-year-old Rizki Akbar Putra on August 14. The three-and-a-half month jail term is less than the six months recommended by prosecutors and well below the six-year available maximum for the crime. The sentence means O’Brien would be released at the end of November, with time served. O’Brien ran head on into Rizki as she tried to overtake a truck on a west Bali road, about three hours from Denpasar. He said O’Brien’s actions were aggravated by the fact that a young man lost his life. In mitigation, the Judge said there had been a peace agreement between O’Brien and the victim’s family, she had paid them compensation and had no criminal record. Prosecutors had submitted that O’Brien was driving without caution when she attempted to overtake the truck. In Negara District court, Rizki’s mother told the Judges she had forgiven O’Brien and in emotional scenes the pair embraced and wept in court. O’Brien told the Judges during her trial that several years ago she had watched her husband killed in an accident and she had moved to Jembrana in Bali to start a new chapter in her life and escape the dark memories of her husband’s death. O’Brien said she had been crippled by the grief of her husband’s death and decided to start a new chapter in Bali, setting up a free English course, providing quarantine for abandoned dogs and helping to develop a silver handicraft industry in the area. ‘I never once in my life intended to cause trouble here but the reality is different.’ “I am deeply in love with Indonesia and Jembrana in particular and I already consider that Indonesia and the Jembrana community, in particular, are part of my life. “I never once in my life intended to cause trouble here but the reality is different. I have made the people of Jembrana sad because of this problem. “Therefore I ask the victim’s family, all the audience here, Jembrana community and the Indonesian people, in general, to forgive my negligence and deign to allow me to continue to carry out social activities in Jembrana Regency after this incident.” [7news.com.au November 5, 2019]
8 New ways Bali airport is catching drug smugglers 9News has gone behind-the-scenes with Bali airport customs officials, as arrests spike of would-be drug smugglers. Despite Indonesia’s harsh trafficking penalties, plenty of foreigners are still attempting to run the gauntlet and putting their lives on the line to do so. 25 people were detained in 2017, including two Australians, for attempting to traffic through the holiday island’s international airport, post or cargo. Then last year arrests spiked with 75 people detained, again two of them Aussie. And 2019 is on track to match that or even exceed it with 59 arrests so far, three from Australia. “Maybe, they think that the Indonesian market is quite high because we have a really high population in numbers, and also at the same time the number of drugs circulating the country is maybe so little, that it makes the price so expensive,” said Teddy Triatmojo from the Ngurah Rai officers. “Many of the cases for the smuggler putting the Customs and Excise Office. narcotic in the false compartment are managed to be identified through the image on the X-ray machine,” Mr Officials said an increasing number of traffickers were risking Teddy said. their lives by carrying drugs inside their bodies. Bali is the number one tourism destination in Indonesia with approximately 16 million domestic and foreign tourists visiting the island every year. The tourism industry contributed approximately USD 7.6 billion or Rp 100 trillion during 2018, or 40 percent of Indonesia’s tourism sector income. Unfortunately, the visits have dropped significantly in 2019, which has affected tourist spending, with a drop of eight percent so far recorded. According to many, one of the main reasons for the drop is because rubbish has become a major problem on the island, especially on the beaches and the sea, which are the main tourist attractions. Bali produces approximately 1.6 million tons of trash per year, and 20 percent of that trash is single use plastic. To help solve this issue, Bir Bintang, the iconic beer of Indonesia, is cooperating with environment activist and Make a Change World founder, Gary Bencheghib, to launch a campaign to introduce responsible waste management in order to protect Bali. “We did this to show our commitment to support the Indonesia tourism industry and keep Bali as the star destination. We believe that the best way to prevent trash running to the beach and sea should be started from responsible waste management behavior and the local habit of throwing rubbish into the river should be eliminated immediately,” said PT Multi Bintang Indonesia Niaga Marketing Director, Mariska van Drooge, to suara.com in Bali. Mariska said that the campaign involved the installation of 100 trash booms in Bali. The trash boom is an affordable technological solution to trap the rubbish on the river which was developed by an environmental startup company from Germany, Plastic Fisher. Trash booms have been proven to prevent trash moving along rivers, drains and to beaches. “During the last 10 years, we have launched several expeditions to
the most polluted rivers in the world and we saw that we need to do something. That’s why we are glad that we can start the project in Bali on our tenth anniversary,” said Bencheghib. As a start, three trash booms will be installed on Ayung River branches. The first one has been installed on Tukad Yeh Poh or Yeh Poh River in Kerobokan Kelod. They plan to install more in the next few weeks and they will start an interactive education campaign of waste management to increase the awareness of the people about throwing trash into the river. “We created an effective trash boom made from local materials which offers a simple and efficient solution in collecting trash from the rivers as soon as possible. The product is easy to install and easily maintained. We have implemented it successfully on Citarum River, West Java, with great success,” said the leading engineer of Plastic Fischer, Moritz Schulz. To track the efficiency and the progress of the campaign, an online platform called River Watch has been activated with the purpose to monitor the river water and provide education to the public. Bronco Fifita finally free after Bali jail time... but now faces NRL integrity unit probe Brisbane NRL star David Fifita has been released from an Indonesian police station and will race to catch a flight and return to Australia on Monday night after three days behind bars. The holidaying 19-year-old allegedly hit a Bali nightclub security guard, who later withdrew his complaint after reaching a so-called “peace agreement” with the Broncos’ forward. Fifita had been in custody since Saturday and, facing a suspension and fine, is due to be interviewed by the NRL’s integrity unit on his return to Brisbane. Fifita’s lawyer said his client “doesn’t remember” much of the incident, while the Broncos flew welfare officer Adam Walsh to the scene to help to resolve the issue. Kulture Kid What does ‘Niskala’ mean?
Most Balinese believe in two worlds: sekala and niskala, translated roughly as the worlds of ‘the seen’ and ‘the unseen’. Referred to as simply ‘nis’ by many locals, niskala is taken into consideration in pretty much every aspect of a Balinese person’s life. It is more than just mythically creatures that we would view somewhat cynically as ‘fairies at the bottom of the garden’, it is the unseen realm that Balinese believe cohabits and constantly influences our lives. It is literally another dimension that most of us cannot interact with. As sci-fi as it seems, most Balinese really believe it exists and constantly must be appeased. This is what “all those offerings on the ground” are for.

Bad karma (karmaphala) is served by the hand of nis in the form of sickness, poor family economy and other types of suffering. Niskala is not always bad of course as it is also (primarily perhaps) the realm of gods and goddesses. I most commonly hear of people referring to nis when talking about sickness. In terms of treating sickness, many locals investigate both the seen and unseen, but I see that, at least in the cities, there is a tendency towards heading down the medical path first (albeit somewhat distrustingly), then to alternative therapies, and finally – perhaps more in desperation than anything else – looking at possible nis causes. In the villages, nis may be the first consideration but this depends on access to medical facilities and levels of education. Ceremonies which focus specifically on negative aspects of niskala are called buta yadnya. These types of ceremonies must use loud gamelan music and often invoke trance. Within human ceremonies (manusa yadnya) a mabayuh ceremony may be necessary for somebody with health or personal problems attributed to nis. At this ceremony, specific offerings to the underworld as well as holy water and arak brem are made and the family will pray together. From birth until death and so on into cycles of reincarnation until achieving nirwana, nis is that unseen factor that all Balinese constantly have on their minds.

Beauty & Health Sanur Gets Rejuvinated Now those of you who live in Sanur are lucky enough to have Rujuvie Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Clinic in your neighbourhood. It’s a brand new building with three floors and lots of windows to make it bright and cheerful right in the heart of Sanur. The décor is clean and chic modern with spacious rooms and waiting areas.
After Dr. Denny finished working on my teeth he gave me a little tour of their facilities. I saw that they had the latest water sculpting equipment to shape a porcelain crown. Sort of like a 3-D printer. They also make porcelain veneers on the premises. No need to send their work out.
This clinic isn’t just to get your Botox and fillers but it has a state of the art dental clinic as well. They have three dentists using ultra-modern equipment and their own dental lab with the latest equipment to make porcelain crowns and veneers. I went in for a teeth cleaning, something I was overdue for.
Dr. Denny greeted me with a big smile inside his large room with a pink dental chair. Sitting at the small table and chairs we chatted for a few minutes about my dental needs. I explained that I had been experiencing some sensitivity in one of my teeth next to my implant. Laying back on the pink dental lounge I relaxed and waited for the doctor to ask me to open my mouth. He probed around looking for the sensitive tooth and discovered that it was an old filling which had deteriorated. That meant changing the filling. But first he’d clean my teeth. When I was asked to rinse I scowled at the plastic cup with a straw sticking out of it. “This isn’t very eco-friendly.” I reminded him.“I know but we plan to change to glass ones when we finish our supply of these plastic ones.” He explained.“Good idea.” I agreed. “Too much plastic in Bali.” After my teeth were squeaky clean the dentist injected me with numbing solution to prepare me for the filling extraction and refilling. The doctor was very gentle without causing me any discomfort. However, he did tell me that he could tell I grind my teeth while I sleep and should have a mouth guard to wear at night. They could make that for me too. He made a mold of my upper teeth and said I could pick up the guard later in the afternoon.
Vaseline and repeated the procedure on the opposite side. After this she applied an oil to my forehead and quickly glided the RF devise all over my forehead with quick movements. Within less than a minute it felt quite warm, sometimes hot. She repeated the procedure over each area of my face below my eyes and down to my jaw. Then the neck area. I found this a tad too warm at times - like a little burn for a second. Step by step she covered my entire face and neck. I grimaced a few times but the nurse told me that many clients actually fall asleep during the treatment. The nurse explained that it’s recommended to have four treatments for best results, a week apart. Rejuvie has a package of four treatments offering 20% discount. The collagen under your skin will be rejuvenated giving you a younger and revitalized looking face. You won’t see results immediately because the rejuvenation of the collagen and tightening of the skin is accumulative taking a few weeks for the full effect.
I was very impressed with the professionalism and quality of the dental work I received at Rejuvie Clinic. I had to return a week later to have the filling filed down a little for my comfort. During this visit I was happy to see glass drinking glasses by all of the water dispensers in the waiting areas plus Dr. Denny had a glass sitting on the rinsing area of the dental equipment. I was so pleased that Rejuvie had taken action so quickly in changing their system to a more eco-friendly environment. Hats off to them!!!

Everything to keep you younger looking and beautiful.
Next I returned downstairs and was escorted to the aesthetic doctor to explain about the Accent Ultra & Radio Frequency facial treatment I was about to have. This treatment would melt the fat around my jaw with the ultra sound portion then followed by the radio frequency, which would heat up the tissue inside causing trauma which would stimulate the collagen production. The nurse escorted me to a treatment room and asked me to lie down. There was a bright green comforter at the end the bed which I gratefully pulled up to cover myself. I knew I would feel cold after a while in the air conditioned room where I would be spending the next 90 minutes. First the nurse cleansed my face and patted it dry. Next she applied Vaseline over my jaw and neck on one side. Then she picked up the ultra sound wand and activated it and began quickly gliding it over my jaw and neck for 10 minutes. It felt warm but was comfortable. After this she wiped off the

BOOMER CORNER A Natural Solution for Osteoporosis Five years ago I was shocked to find out I had osteoporosis. I thought I eat a healthy diet, exercise, so why do I have this? I’d hoped I could escape the diagnosis that my mother and my sister shared. What is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a silent disease that causes your bones to become fragile and porous. While it happens to both men and women, a higher percentage of women have it. You don’t know it’s lurking in your bones in the early stages. But in progressed stages, you are more likely to break bones in falls or even have a vertebra break without incident.
drug regularly prescribed for osteoporosis. Unfortunately, it can have severe side effects. After five years of taking it, my sister read alarming reports that it can cause jaw-bone death and leg bones to shatter. Her doctor looked at the evidence and agreed she should stop taking it. If you have been diagnosed with Osteopenia or Osteoporosis, what can you do instead of taking drugs?
It’s advised that postmenopausal women have a DEXA Scan, also called a bone density scan. This is a noninvasive low-dose x-ray. You lie on an open table while an x-ray arm passes over your body measuring your bone density. There are no injections and no tunnels. All that’s required is lying still for a short time. Because bone density varies in the body, a couple of places are scanned including the spine and hip. It’s a good idea to get a DEXA scan as a baseline to monitor your bones. A radiologist compares your score with the bone density of a young healthy 30-year-old adult of the same gender and ethnicity. The difference between the two is called a T Score. The score is also compared to a healthy adult the same age and this difference is called a Z score. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines osteopenia (a precursor to osteoporosis) as a T score of 10% to 25% below the average. Osteopenia is a wakeup call to do all you can for your bones. Osteoporosis is diagnosed when your score is more than 25% below the average healthy adult’s bone density. Now you are at increased risk for fractures. In the US 50% of women diagnosed with osteoporosis will break a bone while 25% of men will. How Can We Help Our Bones Naturally? My mother’s and sister’s doctors put them on Fosamax, a
she is now in the normal range. After some research, I purchased a six-month supply taking it regularly because I didn’t want to do the prescribed drugs. What sold me on the product was the money-back guarantee that if bone density doesn’t increase within six months of taking it, the company will refund your money. I have been on it for several years now and my bone density is in the normal range. My sister followed suit as did several friends and we have all had the same result: normal bone density. Scientific studies show that taking other forms of calcium supplements from shells and rock, just doesn’t work, whereas the calcium from the ocean sourced algae in AlgaeCal is readily absorbed by the body. It’s combined with magnesium, vitamins D3 and K2, and trace minerals. The best bet to build bone is to use their bone builder pack of AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium. You take two AlgaeCal capsules twice a day. The strontium must be taken on an empty stomach two hours before and after eating. I usually take mine two hours after dinner and just before bed.
Oh, oh here it is again – that word we don’t want to hear – EXERCISE! And for bones, specifically weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, dancing, hiking, jogging, jumping rope, tennis, and climbing stairs.
Their website, https://www.algaecal.com, is packed with information about osteopenia and osteoporosis. There are diet and recipe ideas, exercises tailored for bones, reviews by real people, and scientific studies.
Eating a bone-healthy diet with plenty of calcium, vitamins D and K2, magnesium, plus trace minerals your bones crave also helps. This includes plenty of dark leafy greens, such as broccoli, bok choy, and kale. Canned sardines and salmon with the bones in, is another good source of calcium. Dried figs and apricots along with fresh oranges, Brazil nuts, and almonds all have bone benefits.
I get nothing from writing about this product except the satisfaction of knowing this information can help others rebuild their precious bones.
And of course, stop smoking and decrease your sugar intake to lower inflammation which accelerates bone loss. AlgaeCal A friend, also battling osteoporosis, told me about a product with no side effects. It improved her bone density so much

Parklife is A Madcap Playground for Kids in Bali Expat parents know that Bali offers a ton of kid-friendly places, activities and events. The visitors from abroad catch on soon that kids are very welcome here, even adored and cosseted. The whole island is a playground but where can you find a place where all that familystyle fun and adventure can be packed into one location? To be sure, there are a few Kiddie Clubs sprinkled around but up to now it was a bit of a stretch to find a place that caters to kids and parents alike with a very comprehensive offering of activities and events that indulges both children and adults. Enter Parklife, a brand new place that opened in July amidst the rice fields of Canggu and already earned a reputation for the in place to go with the kids for a few hours, a day or longer.
ride-on toys and games that will attract children up to 12 years who have energy to burn. Soft play options for the little tykes (from 3 years on) are provided as well. Toddlers can regale in sensory play in the Rainbow Room, immersing themselves in an imaginary world of role-playing. Various daily projects, games and classes for all cubs are organised in The Studio, including after-school activities for both adults and children. The Kiddy Cave is a perfect option for supervised childcare, for children aged 3 years and up where they can interact with other little munchkins and make friends. The Kiddy Cave offers both indoor and outdoor activities under the care of Parklife’s fully trained staff. Regular daycare hours are from 9 to 5 but the Kiddy Cave offers longer opening hours giving flexibility to parents. All play areas and classrooms are expertly staffed by Early Learning teachers, Parklife’s fully trained team and enthusiastic and caring minders who speak excellent English and will entertain the children and lead them in guided play. Safety and cleanliness standards are rigorously maintained.
Parklife is at once a Kid’s Club, an indoor-outdoor playground, a playschool, an educational centre, a daycare, a family hub, a greet, meet and eat place for mums and dads, a social club for the entire family, a great restaurant and an inviting sunset happy hour spot.
Parklife’s indoor-outdoor restaurant is an engaging space for parents to relax, while their children play. The indoor space is in an air-conditioned room with a great view of the garden and adjacent ricefields. Very conducive to get a bit of work done, catch up on emails and social media. Free Wi-fi of course. A varied and broad menu includes breakfast, lunch and dinner selections with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. The restaurant caters to picky little eaters. They also serve a great cup of java with handselected coffee beans by the well-known Expat Roasters.
This kiddie wonderland caters to healthy energy levels, curious minds and fanciful imaginations, budding artists and performers. On any given day you will hear delighted squeals, enthusiastic singalongs, the sounds of hip hop bounce, drama recitations. Play, song and dance reverberate through the space. Guided activities for the children include arts and crafts, drama classes, science experiments, learning games, fun group activities and unencumbered play time. When tired or played out, the little imps can have their own chill out areas to settle down to more quiet pastimes. Parklife has both indoor and outdoor play places. The indoor activities take place in breezy, open-air rooms while the outdoors beckons with a big garden area bordering the lush rice paddies of Canggu, a natural and green space where children can play on jungle gyms, in water features, a giant sandpit and a mini beach, on jumping pillows and lots of grass to play tag and roll around on. It is also a great location to stage a smashing birthday party or other event celebration complete with games, magic shows or other themed entertainment. On weekends there are special all day fun events like magic shows, water games, treasure & gruffalo hunts, races and children’s disco. Indoor play takes place in the Madhouse which houses a ‘monster’ climbing gym, a bounce zone with inflatables,
concert, singalong, magic, craft making, face painting, a fashion show, a prize for the best dressed in the frozen theme and a Happy hour for the adults.
The outdoor terrace, with its gorgeous views of the surrounding rice paddies is a great spot to enjoy relaxing sunsets with a cold beer, cider or glass of wine while the kids have movie time in the outdoor cinema. Parklife is a lively family style entertainment concept full of animation and bustle for resident expats and visitors. It creates ideal family time and an awesome play-learn combination for kids. Best of all are the many themed events that regale kids and adults alike. Halloween was celebrated with a great Addams Family style Halloween Party with spooky treasure hunts, Halloween trick or treat games and some ghostly DJ entertainment. Next up is the Frozen Party on 27 November which promises a riotous time with a
Christmas entertainment is in the works and will start off with a Kids Helping Kids event to benefit the disadvantaged ‘SoleBuddies’, the children in the care of Yayasan Solemen Indonesia who rarely enjoy the tradition of receiving Christmas gifts. For the last few years Solemen has organised this yearly event to bring a little cheer in the lives of their SoleBuddies. It was inspired by Koa, a then 5-year old boy who spent all his pocket money on Christmas presents for the less fortunate children. Koa also roped in his school friends to donate pre-loved toys for the SoleBuddies and every year since then Koa’s group has spearheaded this wonderful happening. This year’s event will be held on 18 December at the Parklife facility and it promises to be even bigger and better as Solemen and Parklife have joined forces to create a big Christmas gift drive, soliciting various schools to organise collection boxes for their students to drop off their toy donations. There is also a collection box at the Parklife reception area for members and visitors to drop off preloved but still clean and usable toys for a variety of ages, boys or girls. No need to wrap, just drop the toys in the bin and the Parklife staff will sort, wrap and designate to an appropriate child. Toys, dolls, cuddly toys, games, colouring books & crayons, Indonesian language story books are most welcome. The goal is to collect 1000 gifts. Do put this 18 December event on your calendar. It’s bound to be a fun, joyful, moving and inspiring party with lots of games, entertainment and the chance to experience that good old-fashioned satisfying Christmas spirit of giving to the less advantaged children in Bali. Schools and individuals who would like to get involved with this gift drive can contact tribe@parklifebali.com. Parklife is located on Jl. Raya Uma Buluh No.15, Canggu. Tel: 0818-0511-3200. www.parklifebali.com. Parklife hours cater to parents’ busy schedules and they are open from 8 am to 9 pm. Day passes, weekly or monthly packages are available. The Flat Roof Society Last week I was walking through a particularly beautiful corner of Bali when I heard a loud thud immediately behind me. Turning around, I was gobsmacked to see a rather large durian sitting on the path exactly where I had passed a split second earlier. My mind raced through horrific thoughts of the spines of the aforementioned durian embedded in my skull and went on to consider the odds based on space and time of such a close shave. Noting my walking speed and the 40 cms between myself and the fearsome fruit, I calculated the length of time (about a gazzillionth of a metric second) that determined my fate between survival or a rather painful ongoing negative survival situation. My respect for durian trees has increased somewhat. I was reminded that the last time I had been in that area I had come across a lady farmer wearing a yellow site helmet. Now a site helmet on a farmworker is not a common sight so I had asked politely “is your roof leaking?” “Is my roof leaking?”came the assertive reply, “Are you mad? This is Bali, of course my roof is leaking.” We parted in a mutual state of bewilderment. But now, with my recent experience, the vapours of misunderstanding dissipated and the vision of the strangely behatted agroworker (note not aggroworker she was very polite) made very clear sense. My original theory of a leaking roof, however, still holds water. Ever since Adam made the first umbrella out of his figleaf (the only other human on the planet wasn’t bothered she’d seen it all before anyway) man (and woman of course) has/have known that water has a very distinct tendency to fall out of the sky and, even more distinctly, to flow downhill. We have also been aware that it is nice to avoid falling water when the sky opens and it starts raining cats, dogs and durians (especially durians) or anything
else that may fall from the sky - in short we do like to keep dry when it’s peeing down don’t we? As a result we have a wonderful invention that probably came long before the wheel, we call it a “roof”. Now my father always used to say that roofs are sloping for a reason. He had a bit of a thing about flat roofs which, in Britain, as inevitably as hangovers follow heavy drinking, such roofs always leaked. In Bali these days, in spite of the Balinese request that all buildings have traditional sloping Balinese roofs, flat concrete roofs have become commonplace and, as it happens, leaks in flat concrete roofs have become almost as commonplace. Most flat roofs follow a similar type of construction, a 10 to 15 cm thick slab of reinforced concrete with a thin 2 to 5 cm thick layer of cement on the top. This cement layer is known as a “screed” and, contrary to popular belief, its purpose is not to waterproof the roof. It is, in fact, installed to provide a smooth sloping surface so the roof will drain correctly towards the drainage points thereby avoiding water “pooling” on the roof. Note that it is the reinforced concrete slab, not the screed, that keeps the water out. The slab must be correctly designed and constructed and cast as a single piece of concrete with no joints in it. Reinforcing steel must be of the correct size and should be correctly placed. It is also very important that the concrete is correctly mixed during construction, not too much water should be added and a vibrator should be used when pouring the concrete to remove any trapped air. The cement screed often causes problems. Under intense sunshine this thin layer can get very hot while the reinforced concrete of the roof beneath stays cooler. The screed expands more than the concrete and as a result it cracks and you will see cracks across the surface of the roof. This cracking often results in the screed separating from the reinforced concrete beneath.
Now when it rains, water can penetrate the cracks in the screed and can travel across the roof between the cement screed and the reinforced concrete and will manage to find any leaks through the concrete and into the room below. Repairing these roofs requires an understanding that it is the reinforced concrete that is leaking and not the screed. We must identify precisely where the roof is leaking and use correct methods and properly selected materials if we wish to avoid the inevitable desire to put our head in a gas oven at some later stage. The most effective methods of sealing such roofs are not expensive and very effective but beware, a contractor armed with a jackhammer who learned his inestimable skills wafting a satay grill can very quickly do a lot more damage than they can ever repair. Are you a member of the flat roof society? It is probably best to keep it simple, respect our Balinese hosts and avoid flat concrete roofs in the first place. Traditional roofs are cheaper, more effective and well within the capabilities of local builders. They are also a lot cooler than flat roofs which collect a lot of heat which is transferred into the house beneath. Designers Inspired by Tradition I love how we get multi-disciplinary artists at our annual arts festivals. The Balinale, MiniKino film festival, and Ubud Writers and Readers, are some recent cultural conventions which annually bring international talents in far more crafts than the category of festival. I’m letting you in on the sartorial angle, and if I can get someone to donate their Bintang singlet to The Smile Shop in favor of donning a baju Lurik Solo, my work is done.
get disapproving looks? I told Didiet about my own fears of being accused of cultural misappropriation, since I still don’t know all the meanings of certain colors or fabric prints. He suggested simply asking the nearest Indonesian for advice when selecting an outfit. Eliza added that an intended lack of respect is certainly recognizable by most Indonesians, but if one innocently makes an unusual clothing choice, it is easily forgiven in the spirit of friendship. Whew!
Just in case you didn’t bother to google it, a baju Lurik Solo is a Javanese men’s jacket, woven of a distinctive striped cotton, in the tradition of Solo, one of Indonesia’s great fabric capitals. As a bit of a festival lizard, I recently met some of Indonesia’s most innovative clothing designers, and I’ll tell you how you can buy their goods. Even at the writers’ festival, an impromptu catwalk had Java’s Didiet Maulana modeling his own Ikat Indonesia fabrics, and Fashion For Words activist/writer Eliza Vitri Handayani wearing her sumptuous ball gown festooned with quotations from banned books. That session was moderated by diffability activist Carly Findlay, whose unusually sensitive skin drives her to seek out clothes of only the most comfortable, soft cotton. Ikat Indonesia is Didiet’s line of men’s and women’s clothing glorifying Ikat dyed fabric, and playing up the beauty and high craft of Lurik weaves (the unmistakable striped cotton fabric seen in Java). His work regularly sells out of his online shop (theikatindonesia.com) and he is in great demand as a corporate uniform designer and bridal expert. His philosophy of clothing includes a strong desire for young Indonesians to re-engage with their traditions, and he says that a couple of his high quality classic pieces can be the basis of a wardrobe that will wear for a lifetime, whereas cheap trendy clothes can fall apart or be grossly out of style in a matter of weeks. Expats, do you ever feel dumpy or a bit of a trespasser when garbed in Indonesian clothes at a temple or ceremony? Love to wear a sarong as a scarf or shawl, but
When her baby girl was born, she realized that there weren’t good clothes for nursing mothers. So she went to work on this concept, while also costuming the new, filmed-in-Bali internet series, Promoter in Paradise (in which she’s got a cameo role as a wardrobe stylist)! She and her husband have worked on a number of small film projects, some shown at MiniKino this year, and she is in development stages of a feature-length movie, based on real events, about a woman avenger of abused and battered women. @thisisfriska will connect you with her work. Another fashionista working for nursing mums is Dwi at Inakunkun, her Instagram tag also. She sells t-shirts cleverly adapted for easy breastfeeding. I love her cute elephant patterned sarongs, and her leather flats were selling briskly at the BIWA bazaar. Flash notice! Another designer’s updated interpretation of Lurik is in the boutique Lurikoe, outside the Anhera Hotel in Sanggingan. Find here the beautiful creations of Dian Retmawati, a fabric rule-breaker : some pieces flaunting feathery, frayed seamlines, ingenious mixing and matching, but always with an elegant line on the body. Gorgeously flattering on bodies of all shapes and heights, Dian’s comfy dresses and separates pay honor to the craftspeople who invested so much work into the special dyeing and weaving processes. Dian honed her skills through friendship with a Milanese designer, so there’s a sense of Italian styling to her cutting and pattern work. Her creations sell out quickly, as they are very reasonably priced. Made from Lurik weaves, they are built to last. Friska Aldilla Eka Putri is a stylist and film costumer who is just about to launch her line of super-comfortable clothes.

MONEY MATTERS Can You Afford to Retire in Bali? Or anywhere else for that matter! Over the years I have met westerners of all ages who have fallen in love with Bali and decided this is where they will spend the rest of their lives. Many have married locally and this has turned their wishes into more of a commitment and has limited future choices. In many cases the dream works out. Those who have made careful provision for retirement can indeed live their lives out in a warm climate with friendly people and enjoy less stressful twilight years than might be the case ‘back home’.
ambitious and well-meaning attempt by the government to provide healthcare for all but in terms of providing a full service it is an impossible dream. Healthcare is a major political issue everywhere. Political parties fight over the issue, particularly in the US where not everyone believes the better-off should subsidise the less well-off. The reality is that with ageing populations medical care takes a massive chunk of a country’s budget.
The difficult choices I have had this discussion with many clients over the years as they contemplate how they will address the issue as they get older. Unless they are very wealthy and have an unlimited budget for future medical care or can cope with very high premiums I tell them they have three basic choices: 1. Self-insure. At the earliest possible time, well before retirement, start to build up a reserve pool of savings or dedicated investments strictly for the purpose of future medical treatment. This takes a lot of self-discipline as there will undoubtedly be many temptations to dip into the fund. 2. Return to their ‘home’ country which in most cases where westerners are concerned will honour their right as a citizen of that country to access free medical care. 3. Remain in Bali but accept that they will no longer have access to international standard medical care. If Option 3 is the chosen way to go and you are able to join the Indonesian government scheme BJPS then that should provide a degree of comfort although experience of the scheme so far has been mixed and premiums will have to rise if the scheme is going to be sustainable. It is a very
To provide an example I will use US Dollars as it is the world’s dominant currency. The problem with using the local currency is that its history is one of rapid devaluation against the dollar so calculations would be very hit-andmiss. Although some could get by on $500 a month while others would contend they would struggle on $10,000 a month let’s take a modest figure of $2,000 a month and assume that you have a paid-for property that you live in. That equates to $24,000 a year. Now how will you invest to generate such an income? A bank deposit or US Treasury Bonds? You would be looking at around 2% a year at most at present interest rates. Therefore to generate an income of $24,000 you would need to have a savings pot of $1.2 million! Even then, to maintain the same standard of living you would need at some point to start dipping into the capital.
But there are drawbacks Perhaps the biggest of these is access to quality medical care at an affordable price. In the working days of an expatriate’s life such care was assured by taking out international medical insurance, an absolute must for a person with family responsibilities. And for those still working or running a successful business it is affordable. BUT, and it’s a big BUT, all that changes as you approach and pass the age of 65. Insurance companies that have provided cover for you up to age 65 will generally continue to offer cover but the premiums start to rise exponentially. Hardly surprising when you consider that insurance companies are in business and have obligations to their shareholders. If you are not already among the one in three people statistically to have suffered one of the main critical illnesses, namely heart attack, stroke or cancer by the age of 65, then for sure each subsequent year increases the likelihood of such an event and they can be very costly ones.
How much will you need to save to provide a given income?
Medical considerations apart, will your income be sufficient? If you are over fifty, the chances are that you are better prepared for retirement than younger people will be when they get to retire. Millennials (the ‘avocado and latte’ generation) have grown a reputation for enjoying life today and showing scepticism for saving for the future. Perhaps that will change as they get older but they risk delaying saving to a point where they will need to allocate a very large portion of their income to build up a retirement fund. According to a paper issued by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority half of all 20-29 year-olds have no retirement savings. However there are schemes now in the UK and elsewhere that ensure people allocate part of their earnings to a pension fund. But these schemes apply only to those living in their home countries. Expatriates are particularly disadvantaged as no-one obliges them to join pension schemes. Some are drawn to savings and pension plans offered by the big life companies. In the absence of viable alternatives they have served a useful purpose over the years but their restrictions, high charges and surrender penalties now make them very outdated. Technology has allowed better and cheaper options to take their place.
There are of course better alternatives to cash or government bonds to provide income. A million dollars would buy a much larger annuity but the capital would be lost on death and there is no provision for inflation unless you accept a much lower starting rate. Investment property is an option but it comes with many risks. A diverse investment portfolio is probably the best way to go but that too must be carefully managed. There is no single ‘best’ solution that fits all. We have covered the subject of how much you might need to retire. But how do you get to that point if you have only 10 or 15 years left to retirement and your savings fall far short? Panic is not an option as it can lead to unwise decisions. But there are some practical and flexible options which I will cover in the future. At this point I would simply advise not to get locked into any commitments like fixed term savings plans and avoid at all costs any investment products that offer high returns. There is a film doing the rounds in cinemas called Countdown. Its advertising blurb asks if you could find out exactly when you’re going to die would you want to know. And it suggests that there is an App that will tell you! That could be quite helpful in retirement planning. And it brings us to the ultimate piece of wisdom, namely that perfect financial planning entails living life to the full by drawing down your savings such that they run out on the day you die and the cheque you left for the undertaker bounces. Happy retirement!

Education & Family
School News Community at Dyatmika School As you enter the grounds of Dyatmika School, one of the first things that catches your eyes, apart from the natural beauty of the campus are the smiling, friendly faces of its community. It is not just the students and teachers who smile, but the parents who are present at the many school events, the housekeeping staff, the security team and the gardening and maintenance team. Dyatmika prides itself on the positive relationships it has with the many people who are part of the community. For a school to be as successful as ours, everyone plays a part. Dyatmika’s Charter is unchanged from the school’s opening when civic responsibility was emphasized 24 years ago. This civic responsibility stays true today. One of Dyatmika’s four Learner Profile attributes is ‘Social and Civic Learning’. Education at Dyatmika is not only about preparing students to achieve academic success, but also to become active members of their immediate school community and broader communities within and outside of Bali. Parents also play a pivotal and positive role within this framework.
Whole school initiatives always keep community and civic responsibility high on Dyatmika’s agenda. Each class from Playgroup right through to Class 12 have parent representatives who meet regularly to discuss, inform and share information. The same parent group strongly support and rally the community to maintain our strong Budaya Bali programme. All these events reinforcing the notion that the students belong to a wider community, one rich in tradition and based on sound civic values. Parents also share their careers and interests with the students. From as early as Playgroup, the Parent Partner Programme allows the parents to become involved with our younger students. Workshops are held each year to inform and update the parents about educational topics and areas of interest. We recently held a workshop based on the ‘Support a Reader’ programme and have held workshops in the past based on our Learner Profile and authentic Bilingual Education.
As students approach Class 12, the school puts in place programmes and events that will help support them as they enter life beyond High School. University Expos and the teaching of life skills allow our senior students to meet future challenges with confidence and they feel supported in the decisions they make about the courses they will
study and universities they choose, within Indonesia and abroad. Students are more likely to achieve academic success when they feel community support and strength. Our students at Dyatmika certainly do and the outstanding success of the Class 12 students in the Cambridge International Examinations is really the culmination of not only excellent teaching and learning but also the framework of community strength, support and sense of responsibility which stays with our students throughout their time at Dyatmika and beyond.

TOKO BUKU Reviews of English language books on Indonesia
Monsoon Postcards
By David H. Mould
A newspaper and TV journalist by training, with a 30-year career as a full-time faculty member at Ohio University, David H. Mould has travelled widely in Asia and southern Africa as a journalist, consultant and researcher. In Monsoon Postcards, notebook in hand, Mould traverses the Indian Ocean from Madagascar through India and Bangladesh to Indonesia on an unpredictable journey on battered buses, bush taxis, auto-rickshaws and crowded ferries. His travels take him from the traffic snarls of great cities to the rice paddies and ancestral tombs of Madagascar’s Central Highlands; from the ancient kingdom of Hyderabad in India’s ethnically diverse and underdeveloped northeast; and from the textile factories and rivers of Bangladesh to Aceh on Sumatra’s northern tip, ground zero of the 2004 tsunami, and then on to Indonesia’s teeming capital of Jakarta, ancient Yogyakarta in central Java and finally the beaches of Bali. Along the way, in markets, shops, roadside cafes and classrooms, he meets journalists, professors, students, aid workers, cab drivers and other everyday residents to learn how they view their past and future. Full of personal anecdotes, the book is a rare perspective on an underresearched field of Indian Ocean studies that was pioneered by Robert D. Kaplan’s Monsoon: The Indian Ocean and the Future of American Power (2010). Although the work can stand alone as a compelling travel guide to seldom-visited developing countries, what interested me most were the writer’s reflections on what all these far-flung countries that border the Indian Ocean have in common. All are linked by history, geography, politics, climate, trade, migration, belief systems and colonial legacy. All four also share poverty, dense populations, mounting environmental problems and intense competition for resources. All are over-dependent on mineral commodities. All have rural populations seeking economic opportunities in urban centres. In Indonesia’s case, this shift to urban areas has taken place for decades. In recent weeks, Indonesia has seen its largest mass protests since the “people power” movement that forced President Suharto to step down in 1998. Among a number of pro-democracy demands, the protesters want
lawmakers to scrap a controversial bill governing land use that can be used to imprison rural citizens for defending their lands against incursions by private companies. Additionally, all four of these Indian Ocean countries share widespread corruption, lack of transparency in government and difficulty in doing business. According to Transparency International’s Corruption Index, only India finishes in the top half of 176 countries, while Indonesia is in 90th place and Bangladesh and Madagascar are locked in an undesirable dead heat at 145th. Religion as well has always played a key role in the politics of these Indian Ocean countries. Lying entirely in an arc of Islam from the eastern fringe of the Sahara to the Indonesian archipelago, Islamic parties are represented in all levels of government all four countries. Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population (225 million), followed by India (190 million), Bangladesh is fourth (after Pakistan) with about 150 million. Although attitudes are more relaxed than in the Middle East, all the countries regularly experience religion-based violence. All the nations’ borders are artificial constructs, drawn up by European colonial powers pursuing their own economic strategies and interests. But because the forces of language, religion, culture and ethnicity have proven more powerful than political regimes or the constraints of cartography, all four countries have had almost continuous border squabbles with each other and with their neighbours. Indonesia has had a long-standing dispute with Australia in the Timor Gap and in the South China Sea where it faces off against Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, Vietnam and China over fishing rights, mineral resources, maritime boundaries and the ownership of islands. Since 2014, Indonesia has blown up hundreds of fishing vessels seized while illegally fishing in its waters.
In the concluding chapter, Mould summarizes and offers sharp glimpses into the significance of what the calls “The Indian Ocean World” which overshadows in land, water area size and perceived importance its big brothers the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans which world maps always put in the centre. The Indian Ocean is more travelled than the other oceans, carrying about half the world’s container traffic. The Malacca Straits is one of the world’s main navigational choke points. With its broad geographical sweep describing a giant circuitous arc around the Indian Ocean, Monsoon Postcards is not just a travel book but an extended essay that combines the author’s interviews, research, personal experiences, philosophy of travel, attitude towards politics, life and work. Although the chapter devoted to Indonesia comprises only 30 pages, it contains insightful and witty observations on the country’s rich history, contemporary life, the complexity of its national and ethnic identities, human rights issues and how Indonesians confront the looming challenges of climate change, uncontrolled urban growth and unequal economic development. This is not an academic study but a series of vignettes that the author describes as “an oversized postcard that I would’ve sent to family, friends and colleagues.” Written by an academic who doesn’t write like an academic, the author’s viewpoint is that of an experienced traveller. Monsoon Postcards demystifies and amplifies with refreshing wit, clarity and honesty the true importance of a little known and misunderstood global body of water where navigation, commerce, religion and culture have always transcended national boundaries. Monsoon Postcards: Indian Ocean Journeys by David H. Mould, Ohio University Press 2019, ISBN 978-0821423714, hard cover, 312 pages, illus., maps, index, dimensions 16cm x 23.5cm.
