Year? The Canggu Club understands that very few feel in the mood to organise lunch for a large group on January 1, especially if you’ve partied your way into the early hours, so they’ve scheduled a family friendly brunch from 10am until 2 on New Year’s Day too! Very convenient of them really!

Where has 2016 gone? Santa is already dusting off his red suit and Rudolph’s getting restless as Christmas day is little more than a month away! Whatever awaits you and your family for the festive season, it’s time to start planning. For those lucky enough to have Christmas Day on our tropical island look no further than Canggu Club for a fun filled festive days for both the big and little kids. Christmas Bali Style at the Canggu Club means the family can enjoy Splash Water Park anytime from 9am until 6pm. Plus delicious desserts such as plum pudding, pavlova, apple pie and a chocolate fountain. With prices as low as Rp 600K per adult for CC members, or

Live music ensures a day of entertainment and a visit from the jolly dude in the red suit means presents for everyone! Christmas is about caring and The Canggu Club will be once again spreading the love this season, playing host to the children of The Jodie O’Shea Orphanage so even those a little less fortunate can share in the excitement of the day.

Open to everyone, walk ins are welcome and you can wipe away any remnants of the previous night’s party as you munch your way through a tasty brunch selection of burgers, breakfast items, hot dogs, tortillas and salads from just Rp400k. Pro Ed is Pumped About Their Prospective Expansions for 2017 a need for a larger learning space and Pro Ed Indonesia’s Llana Reece was very excited about the prospect of incorporating the centre’s first green space for the students. There is also a view to building facilities to accommodate vocational skills development in the near future! In line with Pro Ed’s expansion, Llana’s focus will now be working with Pro Ed Plus at the new Umalas campus along with Alia Probst who will be heading up Pro Ed Plus Junior. Both will lead a team of multi faceted educational professionals charged with the task of supporting students beyond their needs in the classroom, utilising a wealth of resources and an individual student based approach to learning.

Bali’s best alternative to mainstream classroom education is on the move! For 5 years, Pro Education has been considered the ideal solution for students who, for whatever reason, don’t benefit from a regular classroom environment and now this fully internationally accredited and unique education pathway is ready for some exciting changes ahead! With successful programs at their existing campus on Jalan Raya Semer set to continue as usual into 2017, Pro Ed have decided to expand on their already popular Pro Ed Plus program as well as adding another facet to the company; Pro Ed Plus Junior. In order to accommodate this they are excited to announce that they have secured a second campus on Jalan Bumbak, Umalas at the old Montessori school site, just opposite Cafe Bumbak and La Cassetta.

Pro Ed Plus is an ideal program for those students who require a more specialised and individually focused education plan. It provides concentrated, specialist learning support and life skills development through a small class environment and also includes expert assistance from educational counsellors, speech, language and occupational therapists. Pro Ed Plus Junior aims at allowing students from ages 8-12 to develop their academic and essential learning skills, utilising the same specialist support. This is a full day program and classes are kept small (max 8) to promote a non threatening and intimate learning environment, allowing teachers to be able to focus on the individual needs of each learner. At already 18 students strong in the Pro Ed Plus program and the junior program set to commence from January, there was definitely

Current Pro Ed Tutoring and Homework sessions will continue to operate as normal at the Jalan Raya Semer campus and they will only close for the festive break from 23 Dec, commencing Term 3 on January 2. It’s definitely exciting times ahead for the island’s popular alternative to mainstream classroom education and Llana and Alia are happy to answer any questions you may have about Pro Ed’s brand new campus and educational programs. Please do not hesitate to contact them if you have further inquiries about their specialist services by email at: administration@proed.asia Pro Ed wishes everyone safe and happy holidays and they look forward to welcoming you to visit their new campus at the start of Term 3 on January 23rd.

Say What? Question: I’m a 27 year old virgin, who is writing a novel about two people who get together to lose their virginity. I worry that it may not be such a good idea to write about a topic that is so close to me as people, who know me well enough to never have seen me with a girlfriend, must know that I am a virgin when I talk about the book. Some even ask if it is autobiographical. I always say no and never admit that I am a virgin because I want so desperately to lose my virginity, but I tend to want so much control over my life that I believe I’m afraid to allow for this little bit of chaos. A friend recently told me that one of her friends thinks I’m hot and wants to jump my bones. The moment she said that, however, I freaked. The thought that someone may actually want to have sex with me is frightening. I wondered what I would ever do if I actually got into the same room alone with this person. I keep imagining scenarios in my head about how it’s going to be, whether I’m going to be good in bed, whether I’m going to suck at it, and what’s it’s going to be like, etc.. It’s driving me mad. I don’t feel enormously attracted to this girl, but I’m wondering if I should I just go ahead with it for the sake of pure sex and forget all about intimacy and feeling any sense of connectedness. If nothing else, it would allow me to scrap “lose virginity” from my “to do list.” What to do? Dr. ZZ: What to do? Keep living, keep writing, and keep putting one foot in front of the other. Write about what it’s like to be a 27-year-old virgin, who is fascinated by sex and tempted to have sex just to find out what it’s like, a man who is then worried about performance, wants to be cool, and worries that everyone will know. Perhaps you can write about a situation in which the main character has a chance to lose his virginity to someone he’s not sure he likes, and what he learns by going through with it or not - about what it means to be “good in bed” or “not good in bed” and where these ideas originate.

NC/Ns/M-7 Dec. 16

Then explore the psychology of the female character as well; so that she’s not just an object in the man’s search for fulfillment, but that you discover and portray what she wants out of this too. Write because you’re driven to write, and make no excuses. What you write doesn’t have to be autobiographical, but if you’re not putting your passions into your work, then what’s the point? Question: I have been in a loving relationship for almost a year. My partner is ridiculously awesome, but he is also extremely depressed and occasionally suicidal. He has had a very rough life, with a lot of trauma and abuse, and he does not want outside help of any kind. If I or anyone else suggests it, he gets angry. I want to be a supportive partner, but I’m not always good about it. We fight. Sometimes I feel angry, trapped, and resentful. Occasionally he lashes out at me for no obvious reason because that’s the only way he can express the hurt inside. Sometimes, seeing him in so much pain feels as if it is more than I can handle. I hate knowing he will probably never get better, and there’s nothing I can do to help. I love him, and I want us to stay together, but I feel as if I’m in over my depth, and I don’t know what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

C/BT/G-9 Nov. 16

Dr. ZZ: Thank you for writing though I’m not sure of your objective. Did you write in hopes that I might offer strategies for persuading your partner to get help? Are you in search of an avenue to share how difficult it is for you? Or are you in pursuit of permission to leave the relationship? Your partner didn’t choose to be depressed, but by refusing to even consider seeking help, he is making a deliberate choice to stay depressed. If you are ignoring or putting off your own dreams in case “someday” he may get well, then the time to get started on those goals is right now. In the healing profession, there is a saying: “No matter who or what may be responsible for the state you find yourself in at the moment - childhood trauma, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, abusive upbringing, etc. – only you are responsible for getting yourself out of it.” It is not unreasonable to let your boyfriend know that regardless of how sad he may be, or no matter what he’s been through, it’s not okay for him to behave towards you badly. Let him know that his unwillingness to treat his depression and the way he lashes out at you for no reason make your feel angry, trapped, and resentful. You may also want to have a plan in mind for what to do if he attempts or commits suicide. Seeking therapy for yourself may be helpful - not to “fix” your partner, but to nurture yourself in handling all this. Please do not think for a minute that you can change him or anyone else just by loving them enough. Much like your boyfriend and everyone else on the planet, only you are responsible for the way you handle your life and for the way you play the hand you were dealt.

Dr. ZZ has a Ph.D. in Counseling and a doctorate in Natural Healing. Drawing on a background of over thirty years as a professional therapist, she offers self-help in the areas health, relationship and personal growth. 14 WHERE SHOULD WE BE INVESTING IN 2017?

CV. BAYU SANTERO IMMIGRATION SERVICES License No. 043/22-08/PM/I/2003

Our Services: 2016 has been a challenging year for investors. It started with markets continuing the downward trend of 2015. But the sectors that had been devasted the most over several years, namely commodities, energy and emerging markets suddenly came to life and clawed back some of their earlier losses although still remain way below the highs they enjoyed before the oil and commodities collapse. The surprise Brexit vote and shock victory by Donald Trump for the US presidency were widely expected to lead to massive uncertainty and a flight from stocks but instead had the reverse effect, certainly in the case of the US markets which in the first half of December have driven the indexes to record highs. The purveyors of gloom and doom were wrong again, and wise heads who advised remaining on course with investments irrespective of headwinds were proved correct once again.

infrastructure. He said he would put billions of US Dollars into improving the country’s crumbling roads and railways. He is not alone; developing infrastructure has become a key policy of many governments, including Indonesia. It has finally dawned on them that to have an efficient economy you need modern roads, railways, ports and airports. This means heavy investment in companies that provide construction services to achieve these goals, so those companies are likely to flourish for a number of years to come. If you are not a stockpicker you can leave it again to the fund managers. There are a number of funds that focus on infrastructure and they are even available in several life company savings plan fund menus so you can get some exposure at the flick of a fund switching instruction. But don’t leave it until the sector becomes too popular and stocks become overvalued. What about property?

But all this is in the past. We now have to look at the future and assess what we should be doing in the coming year to maximise returns and avoid excessive risk. Where is the best value right now? If value is judged by the P/E (Price-to-Earnings) ratio, then emerging markets offer twice the value of the major markets. The rapid rise in US stock market prices in recent weeks means the dividends paid to investors are falling relative to the price of the stocks. If you are looking for income, then the yield on your investment would be falling. This is not an issue for many investors who count on the momentum of a stock’s growth to continue to drive it upwards and produce quick profits. Extreme examples in the past would be tech stocks that could have P/E ratios as high as 200/1. This would mean that the annual dividend would be only 1/200th of the stock price. Put another way, you would need to hold the stock for 200 years before an accumulation of all the dividends would match the price of the stock. Why aren’t people rushing into emerging markets right now when they are so cheap? One answer is uncertainty over trade deals following the US election. But no doubt when commodity demand picks up and new trade deals emerge their true value could lead to a new bull run. If you are mainly concerned about income, you cannot count on a stock that pays a minimal dividend. Just like pension scheme managers, you would need stocks that have historically provided good dividends through a range of market conditions in order to ensure a steady and predictable income. Some oil stocks fall into this category as do companies selling consumer goods. Most expatriates do not have the time or inclination for stock picking so the answer here is to find mutual funds in the category of ‘growth and income’ of which there is a good selection. Buy low, not high Less experienced or nervous investors will hesitate to follow a trend until it is well-estabished, whether it is a stock market or property boom or even a gold rush. This is why so many people will jump on the wagon late in the game and often just before the applecart gets too heavy and tips over. The winners are often the contrarians; those who buy when everyone else is selling and sell when everyone else is buying. But it is easier said than done, and can require a lot of patience; timing a market is never easy. So what can be considered low priced at the moment? At the beginning of 2016 oil, energy, most commodities and emerging makets were undoubtedly very low. Anyone investing in those sectors at the beginning of the year should end this year with some very healthy profits. But what about now? While the opportunity to maximise gains may have been lost in those sectors they are still cheap by historical standards and relative to the overall US market. Therefore it would be worth adding to existing allocations and most certainly getting some exposure where there is none. The latest ‘must-have’ investment – Infrastructure One of Donald Trump’s main campaign issues was that of

This is always a desirable asset to have but it is very complex and much depends on what kind of property and where it is located. It is definitely an asset that will appreciate in the long term but it can be a cumbersome asset at times and can be severely illiquid. Buy-to-let properties in the UK still represent a sound long term investment due to the huge rental market but the British government by way of tax changes has made ownership of such properties less attractive. This will mean yields will be lower in the early years but the policy will have the reverse effect later on when shortage of rental properties forces up rentals. In Indonesia, particularly Bali, issues on foreign ownership and use of nominees have affected the expatriate market. The surprise Brexit vote resulted in immediate panic in the commercial property market in the UK as investors tried to dump investments in fear of a flight of companies to continental Europe. Many commercial property funds were forced to suspend dealing and are still in suspension. Meaning investors cannot access their money and have no idea how long this will be the case.

So whether 2017 is a good year to invest in property depends much on location but for those with ample spare cash and no liquidity issues this could be a good time to hunt out bargains. But look beyond 2017 If you are seeking to make a fortune in 2017 by investing shrewdly on January 1, you could be disappointed. All the assets covered above have to be seen as long term investments. 2017 could be a good year for some or all of them. But it could also be a year of nasty surprises too, which should not deter you from investing as bad years are invariably followed by good ones. The US S&P index of the top 500 companies surged 100% in the 16 months following the 2008/9 Global Financial Crisis. But few invested at the bottom of the market; people were still in shock at their earlier losses.

The end-of-year holiday period is a good time to take stock, review your long term plans and make adjustments to get the most out of your investments. Have a great holiday period and may 2017 be a safe and successful year for you!

Restaurant & Food Update

Gerry William For more information see our website: www.balieats.com

Nirvana Burger Bar offers a range of hamburgers,

actually made on the premises. Located in the centre of Eat Street [the old Laksmana, now Jln. Kayu Aya] in Kerobokan, next door to the long established Nirvana restaurant it is one of those places that seemingly immediately filled a gap in the available cuisine of that area as it has been busy, day and night, ever since it opened. The burgers are excellent, and no doubt that is a major reason for their success. The Classic Burger uses a grilled freshly ground beef patty in a toasted sesame seed burger bun, with tomato, onion and crisp lettuce. All the burger options come with French fries. However there are also many alternatives. A Chook Burger will puzzle all the nonAussies, as ‘chook’ is a commonly used slang word for poultry, so at Nirvana what would be a Chicken Burger becomes a Chook Burger [chicken patty with lettuce and cheese]. The Hawaiian combines pineapple and cheese with the beef patty, or you can have Bacon & Cheese, even a Fish Burger. However most visiting Australians will always most likely to select the Aussie Burger. It is a beef burger with the lot PLUS that most important ingredient, beetroot [pictured]. The Nirvana Burger Bar is also a sports bar with live coverage of just about every sporting event in the world. Great burgers, at very reasonably prices! No wonder it is always busy.

JamBali brings Jamaican cuisine to Bali with its attractive small restaurant on Jln. Penestanan, above Ubud. You can dine downstairs in front of the small open kitchen or up on the covered roof top, a most pleasant spot to relax. Jamaican cuisine centres around meat that has been dry-rubbed or marinated in a special selection of spice, called Jerk, before grilling. You can start with their Spicy Jerk Chicken Wings or the less spicy Crab Cakes [with a cucumber relish] or Salted Fish Fritters [with a pineapple & ginger sauce]. Mains can be Jerk Chicken or Pork, both having been marinated in those spices before grilling and served with rice and beans. There are also Jamaican Curries, Goat or Shrimp [what Americans call prawns], that have been simmered slowly to preserve maximum flavour. Fish [whole red snapper] can be steamed, in a spicy broth or ‘Escoveitched’, deep-fried the Jamaican way, till very crisp, not unlike the way the Thais also like their whole fish prepared. Vegetarians can enjoy a Coconut Curry, a Red Bean Stew or Pineapple Tofu. For dessert try the Rum and Raisin Bread Pudding, the Sweet Potato Pudding or a Caribbean Cole Slaw.

C/R/G-23 Nov. 16

Gopal’s is on Jln Danau Tamblingan, Sanur. Very different as it is purely vegetarian, and

offering many strictly Vegan dishes as well. The Samosa’s are sweet corn and potato, the Kroket Keju is atuffed with cheese. The Hawaiian Pizza is half Hawaiian, just pineapple and cheese, no ham. The Burger uses a vegetarian patty, topped with cheese. The Burrito can be black bean and sweet corn or red bean and cheese. There are other Indonesian and Indian dishes available, all very cheap for this area.

My Warung is the first of a projected chain, Bali and beyond. Open first at Canggu [Jln. Subak Sari] and Echo Beach [Jln. Batu Mejan] the name Warung suggests Indonesian but this one is pure American style, Ribs and all. Breakfast is a series of bowls; fruits, cereals and salads. For lunch a Mustard Chicken Panini [with brie and caramelized onion]. Dinner time sees more salads, a list of tapas, and a variety of meats. The Tapas include most of the usual combinations, Potato Brava, Meatballs, Croquettes of mushroom or ham, Chicken Wings with honey soy dip, Vegetable Skewers and mini sandwiches. The steaks are from Australia, Angus Rib-eye or Grain-fed Tenderloin. Pork can be Baby Back Ribs or Chops that have been marinated in honey mustard. The Beef Rib can also be served on the bone, Chicken thighs are boned and are served with crisp skin. Betty Lou is the latest American offering in Bali, via Jakarta. It is found in Bali’s new Eat

Street, Jln. Petitenget, Kerobokan, above the Holy Crab, and under similar management. Do you like Pig’s Ears? I have to admit it was the first time I had ever tried them, finely sliced and fried to a crisp, the small shards are then dipped in a garlic & tomato sauce. Interesting! More conventional are the Buffalo Chicken Wings, Sweet Potato Fries and the very tasty Nachos, over-sized corn tortilla chips with a spicy chilli sauce mix, topped with melted cheese of course. Or you can have Cajun Shrimps with garlic butter, or Parmesan Zucchini Fries, long zucchini fingers coated with Parmesan cheese, a tomato dip. The mains consist of a variety of meats, all of which have been smoked, in most cases in a long slow process, up to 18 hours. Ribs feature on most American menus as they do here, Pork or Beef. The Pork are full size [not baby backs] and come in either a full, or half, rack, very heavily smoked, the large slabs of meat just falling off the bone. The Beef are thick-cut short ribs. The Roast Beef is, surprisingly, brisket, although of Wagyu origin. The large slab, also smoked for 18 hours, is cross-sliced and presented rare. It is reasonably tender for this cut of meat. Something a bit different is the Roast Chicken, also smoked, which turns the flesh a pink colour. Then there are the burgers which are not burgers! Using brioche ‘burger’ buns [very New Orleans] the filling can be either a slice of that smoked brisket with crisp onion straws, or pulled pork [shredded meat from the shoulder] topped with coleslaw.

Habitat, once just open day time only, is now also open in the evenings, with a few dishes

added to their popular snacking menu. Directly opposite the large banjar car park for the Monkey Forest this attractive small well-managed boutique café seems perennially busy. Interesting snacks and meals of which their Vietnamese Banh Mi crunchy rolls [I love their meat ball banh mi] are one of the star attractions. Now not just a breakfast, brunch or snacking place but also somewhere for an interesting relaxed casual dinner. Head of the dinner specials is a favourite from The Philippines, Adobo Chicken. It is cooked in rice wine vinegar and soy with green, red peppers and onion. From Thailand, a Smoked Cabbage Roll stuffed with tofu or a Nano Nano Chicken, the breast being stuffed with bay leaf infused potato mash. Much of the normal day menu is also available, along with wine, cocktails, etc. Relaxed, casual and friendly! NC/R/I-07 Dec 16

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

Why does Bali have a history of Animal Cruelty? You don’t have to be in Bali for long before you realize that many animals are treated ‘differently’ to our pets in the West. Dogs and birds, and even endangered species are often kept in small cages for the pleasure of their owners; turtles were traditionally hunted and killed brutally as a delicacy; pigs and water buffalo are still killed in a most cruel manner; animals, including baby birds, chickens, roosters, pigs, ducks, buffalos and even monkeys are still sacrificed for the gods as part of trance rituals or to complete major ceremonies.

C/R/G-16 March 16

When my parents first visited me during my initial tertiary study in Bali, my teacher picked them up from the airport. On the way up to Peliatan a dog tried to cross the road in front of the car. Shockingly he sped up on purpose to hit it and then laughed as it yelped and limped off the road (probably to die in excruciating pain). Needless to say, my parents were horrified. Over the years, I’ve visited hundreds of local families that have ‘pets’ which are caged, malnourished, diseased and regularly hit. Traditionally, dogs are kept as security guards rather than an animal that is loved and cared for. If you understand this, it kind of makes sense why they are treated so badly: if they are caged up and beaten they will be more aggressive and therefore a better satpam. In Muslim majority areas of Indonesia, dogs suffer an even worse (if that’s possible) fate: they are hunted, turned into sate and sold at warung known as ‘RW’. Dog meat is renowned for being hot (panas) which allegedly increases libido (this, of course, is purely local legend and has never been proven medically). For my Balinese family (that loves dogs and cares for them pretty well), a reason why they keep a young dog caged up at night is for fear of it being stolen for dog meat. The lack of concept of ‘pet’ as we know it (a fairly recent concept here, and you’ll find that most pet shops and animal shelters have a foreign hand involved), it also means that there are tons of strays roaming the streets of Bali. Some of these are half-owned but the majority are simply the result of the lack of education about the importance of dog sterilization. The stray dog issue is all the more pressing these days since the appearance of rabies in Bali. More in my next issue on the role of animals in ceremonies and ritual.

The Wrap of 2016 2016 has seen more new restaurants open across Bali than ever before. Sadly many were well meaning disasters, not even lasting the year out. So many people still believe that it is easy to open a restaurant and make millions. The experts can do that, but for most that is just an impossible dream. However 2016 did see the arrival of many great restaurants. There has even been a new cuisine or two, Bali having by far the largest variety of traditional cuisines in S.E. Asia. With a possible 500 new restaurants we do not pretend to have visited all or even most. Observe from the outside, listen to people and then investigate further has been our motto. Bali’s north moves slowly. Lovina was the location for yet another return from retirement for that man Marinos! When you have a simple system that works, why go looking for something different? It worked at Mykonos Taverna back in 2001 [the restaurant that was followed by many others on Jln. Laksmana, Kerobokan, so many that I christened it Eat Street]. Simple Greek fare, now he has done it again, in Lovina, with My Greek Taverna. In the north east corner, divers’ paradise, what is referred to as Amed, saw many new small warungs open. They are mostly operated by locals with a smattering of foreign assistance. Bukit Segara however is a luxury boutique villa complex in Bunutan, just before the popular Lipah Beach. It is famous for being the only Sailing School in Bali It has now also opened up its charming restaurant to the general public. The menu is small but is with very well selected; slow roasted duck, a Balinese rice table and a range of very fresh seafood. The vegetables are from their own garden, all breads from their bakery…at last a quality breakfast in Amed! Ubud saw more activity in 2016 than ever before, I have counted 38 new restaurants in the area, and could have missed quite a few. As per normal some have hit the ground running, others remain empty. Restaurant Abels was one of the first to open, and close. With a chef/owner who had worked at Mandif’s Teatro Gastroteque it had the right credentials, but running a restaurant is a tough business. This site, nicely renovated with roof top added, has become one 2016’s star newcomers.

Roland-Ifah [ex Lamak] food consulting team so it was no surprise to find that the menu ticked every box. The star for me was the Sumatran style Chicken Curry. It had been simmered in coconut cream and was served with the very unusual Roti Jala, green rolled bread that looks like a net, from Malaysia [pictured]. The journey from the main road to the villa complex and restaurant by buggy, along the water channels, is an enjoyable part of the experience. At the other corner, north-east of Ubud, is Pejeng and Pesantian. Balinese cuisine, simple and pure, from international owner/chef Nyoman Santika [The Serai, Amandari, Amanyara and Alila Manggis] in a peacefull setting in the lush bush land of natural Bali, total relaxation. Kare Ayam is on many Bali menus but I have never had it any better than this. Cooked on the bone for extra taste, but falling off it at first touch, this mild curry still has a complex taste, it is quite exceptional! Central Ubud saw constant change. Great restaurant of the 90’s Ary’s Warung, where master chef Chris Salans was first introduced to Ubud, is no more. Instead it has been split in half with White Orchid opening on the left, the other side still under construction. Not far away Daily Baguette opened, on two levels, causing local French expats to rave about the croissants and breads. For the past 2 years, after an awful fire gutted the premises, Clear Café has been temporarily using the old Beggars Bush site [also once a Mykonos, for a short time only]. Now they have re-opened with an impressive new restaurant at its original Jln. Hanoman site, Clear Café is still one of the very few successful pure vegetarian restaurants, since Aroma’s of the 90’s .

Up in Sayan, north-west of Ubud, is Temuku. Its restaurant was one of the many during the year that were set up by the

At the junction of Jln. Hanoman and Monkey Forest is a cluster of small interesting restaurants, one of which, Indochine II, is 3 restaurants in one. Saigon Saveurs is Vietnamese; if you enjoy sweet things then try Ca Kho, caramelized salmon fillet. Cherry Blossom is Chinese featuring a range of dim sum; Bao Char Sui, boned pork belly cooked with garlic, pepper, soy and Chinese 5 spice, stuffed inside a steamed yeast bun. Perfect! Final part of the trilogy is La Terrace, Italian. The pizzas have thin bases and crispy crusts with generous toppings, the way I like them, excellent! A little Vietnamese touch is the sprig of mint on top. Next door is Buddha’s, once a Taiwanese restaurant but now an international one with music and sports TV, open early for breakfast and seemingly popular all day.

Char Siew @ Golden Monkey Shakshuka is a vegetarian breakfast, onion, capsicum and spring onion blended with tomato and egg, spices added to give it a lift! For the visiting Aussies there is even a Vegemite Toastie. Many interesting bar snacks such as Panthay; two well-spiced chicken legs served with coriander, spring onion and fried garlic.

Chicken Adobo @ Habitat

Not all new restaurants need to be big and glamorous with fine dining. Ubud had two very special restaurants open in small villa complexes, out among the rice paddies and natural bush land.

Parking is not yet the same problem in Pengosekan where they were also many new places. What could be more different than a cafe with cats, naturally called Cat Café [open early for breakfast], upstairs on the bend [Taco Casa and Mama Mia], Also upstairs and next door is Tidbit Café, an international menu mainly featuring Mediterranean dishes as does Yasmin Café nearby.

Monkey Forest Road has seen many come, and go. We also said goodbye to Lotus Lane, the last of the Lotus Group restaurants in Bali [Café Lotus reverted back to the land owners many years ago]. Many new places but a total lack of available parking has restricted our visits. No such problem at the Padang Tegal [southern end] where a monster banjar car park [for the monkey forest visitors] is very convenient for one of Ubud’s star new attractions, Habitat Café.

Called JamBali it brings true traditional Jamaican cuisine to Bali, and not just out of a cookbook, it is Jamaican owned and managed. Spicy Jerk Chicken Wings, Salted Fish Fritters [with a pineapple & ginger sauce]. Mains of Jerk Chicken or Pork, marinated in those spices before grilling. There are also Jamaican Curries, Goat or Shrimp.

Chicken Curry @ Temuku

for their special sauce of hoisin, blended with peanut butter! Head of the dinner specials is a favourite from the Philippines, Adobo Chicken, cooked in rice wine vinegar and soy with green, red peppers, onion and pineapple segments that soak up the juices [pictured]. Excellent balance!

This place breaks all of the rules. Designed and operated by young Balinese restaurateur Ben Karmadi, the menu is an Asian feast rather than the ‘sama-sama’ of the 20 other new locally owned cafes in this area. Initially it was only open day time, it is now a dinner restaurant as well. To find breakfast options out of the norm is rare for Ubud, not so here! A Breakfast Burrito combines scrambled egg with sausage, bacon, coriander, cheddar cheese and sweet chilli jam, rolled in a tortilla with watercress salad on the side. For an any-time snack their are Corn Cakes, served with a spinach sauce, salsa and sour cream. Sensational Vietnamese Banh Mi [crunchy baguettes lined with chicken pate] with a variety of fillings. For me the Meat Ball option was the perfect balance

At the top end we had Golden Monkey on Jln. Dewa Sita. Quality Chinese has long been missing from Ubud’s range of cuisines, not any more! They offer all the classic dim sum options plus great roast meats. Peking Duck, served with style, and the greatest Char Siew I have ever had [pictured]. Full strips of pork loin, first marinated traditionally [5 spice, red fermented bean curd, soy, hoisin and of course honey] before being roasted in the oven After many new places in 2015, Sanur had limited happenings but still provided one of the stars of 2016. Hidden away on the back road [Jln. Batu Sari] between Blanjong and Renon is a Thai treasure DD Warung! Unpretentious it is, just a plain local warung. The food knocked me out, real 100% Thai, as cooked in Thai homes every day, hot, sweet, sour, exploring all the extremes of great Thai food. This is not Royal cuisine, certainly not fine dining [help yourself to the cutlery from a box] but the food is the real thing!

That everyday staple Kra Pao [minced chicken with basil, and chilli] is perfect [pictured].

Melbourne] Saigon Street. Star of the new Asian options in this area was Tiger Palm at Seminyak Village with a menu that represents the basic cuisines that make multi-cultural Malaysia interesting; Chinese, Indian, Malay, European and a touch of Thai. It is another outlet from the Sarong Group. Kerobokan saw the opening of a Naughty Nuri franchise. With its very professional management, kitchen and general set up, it far surpasses the original little warung in Ubud with its extended menu. Ribs of course, but here there is so much more. Pork Poppers, 6 tasty bites, crumbed balls of pulled pork with a surprise centre stuffing of smoky apple sauce, wow!

Along Sanur’s central area was Kentongan at one end [specialties of the house include French Duck Confit, Sumatran Rendang and Papuan Crab] and Soul in a Bowl at the other [Ricotta Pancakes topped with compote of red dragon fruit and candied hazelnuts, candlenuts and pistachios for breakfast]. Down on the beach at Semawang the old Stiff Chilli got a work-over. Smart renovation and new Aussie owners, party time every day! Great breakfasts [from 7.00 a.m. for the divers] include a monster Big Brekky. There are many tapas and a selection of sliders [mini hamburgers] to go with a leisurely visit or an Aussie Steak Sandwich. Canggu saw another Happy Chappy [the 1st in Kerobokan was the star of the 2015 new restaurants], no surprise that it was packed from day one. As with the original it is also presenting great Cantonese cuisine. Along Jln. Raya Petitenget in Kerobokan many new Asian restaurants, perhaps they are trying to replicate Happy Chappy’s immediate success? Shanghai Baby [on the Bar Code, and previously Purnama, site] obviously does Chinese of a sort but seems to be more chasing the cocktail set, as is the Vietnamese [from

Tuban saw yet another Bebek Bengil open on Raya Tuban, with their famous Crispy Duck. At Park 23, on Kediri, another Ryoshi opened with a few unique dishes such as Gyudon, a rice bowl topped with sliced beef and onion that has been cooked in dashi, soy and mirin. Many restaurants that opened late in the year have not yet been visited. On Raya Petitenget, Kerobokan, Ling-Ling features Japanese and Korean street food and next door Moon Rabbit offering a full Chinese menu! In Ubud Manisan opened in the extension of the Alaya Hotel, with Indonesian cuisine.

Kra Pao Gai @ DD Warung Unusual for Bali is the great Thai Yum Pla Duk Foo. It is fresh water catfish [in Indonesia, ‘Lele’] steamed then cooled, before serving the pieces of fish are dropped into a very hot wok, the result is that the fish explodes! The fish on the plate now looks as if it has been minced. As with all Thai dishes, balance is the key. The crumbly fish is topped with green mango salad, a perfect match. Big serves, most dishes Rp. 60,000 or less, what a find!

noodles and sushi rolls] and Kopi n Kue [all day breakfasts, English high tea, sandwiches, subs and wraps]. Near by is an investment from Dubai, the large multi level Spice Mantraa, with modern Indian cuisine - Samosas from Delhi, a Slider from Mumbai via America [curried lamb mini burger] or a Pizza from The Punjab. A monster menu that offers a ‘million’ different tastes.

Fish Wings @ Naughty Nuris Seminyak But the major surprise were Fish Wings, a first for me, the wings crunch the barramundi flesh so sweet [pictured], a must try!

Coming soon in 2017 will be more Happy Chappy restaurants, Sanur and Ubud. Also in Sanur will be the 3rd Cosmic Diner, at Sanur Arcade on the ByPass. Fine dining on the ridge at Jimbaran, OPIA arrives! Ryan Clift of the Tippling Club in Singapore opens GROW at the L Hotel, renovations are continuing, to be followed by GROW UP on the Luna Rooftop later in the year. Bali, the foodies paradise of Asia.

Further along Jln. Mertanadi is L’Assiette. I know it opened well before 2016 but I only discovered it this year, and what a find. Paris French with no apologies. Oeuf Cocotte aux Girolles is such, an egg with girolles mushroom and cream, baked in a small terrine, perfect! The Specialty of the chef is Truffe Noire Entiere en Chausson, a whole black truffle in pastry. Shepherd’s Pie with shredded duck comfit as a base instead of minced lamb and a wonderful RARE Roast Beef [pictured], simply served cold with French mustard. Kuta South saw a row of small restaurants in front of the Bali Garden Hotel. Ka Bar is German [Sausage & Sauerkraut Fritters], Curry House [Thai – Red Duck, and Indian – Vindaloo, curries], Wok Mie [dim sum,

CAN I LIVE HERE? by Sarah Alderson In 2009, Sarah and John Alderson quit their full-time jobs in London and embarked, with two rucksacks and a three-year-old daughter in tow, on a round the world journey to find a better life in a new home. The family travelled through the US, Australia, Singapore and Asia - encountering bears in North America, navigating India with a toddler in a tutu and battling black-magic curses in Indonesia - asking themselves one defining question: Can We Live Here? After their yearlong adventure, the family at last settled in Penestanan near Ubud where they lived for five years. In 2010, inspiration struck Sarah and she began publishing a record of all that they had experienced. In her blog Can We Live Here? she talked about their decision to quit their jobs, the challenges of travelling with a small child and the joyful and at times exasperating experience of living in Bali. She found that she enjoyed looking back and reliving all the things they did and hoped that one day her daughter Alula will be grateful that she wrote it all down. She never anticipated her blog finding a wider audience, but after revising and updating the blog, she published a book by the same name in 2015. Can We Live Here? Is a unique, funny and well-written travel memoir of a woman who follows an irresistible impulse and finds a new home in a far-flung land. In an email interview, Alderson told me that the blog was not only a way to keep her friends and family updated but also an effective way to hone and make publishable her writing skills. She said that the difficulty in publishing the book was not in the writing, but rather in putting herself out there warts and all. As a fiction author, she was not used to having her words reviewed and judged. The writing project about her life and her family’s life was personal, so she felt a lot more vulnerable. With lively British-style humor, the book encourages readers to make starting a new life more than just a dream, but a real possibility. There are some charming and instructive tales comparing her traveling life to her life in the western world she once knew and some hilarious anecdotes about her spiritual leanings and trying out new versions of yoga. Her adaptability and thirst for adventure is reflected in the places that she chose to visit. One moment she is sitting in seven thermal layers of clothing with a blanket wrapped around her by a fire. Next she is sleeping in knickers under a fan with mosquitos biting her. “Can I live here?” she asks. “If I don’t become road kill in the next few days, I’ll let you know my thoughts,” she answers. From the backwaters of Kerala to the chaos of Mumbai and the dolphin filled waters of Goa, the author holds a special place for India, characterizing the country as one of the most transformative places she’s ever visited. The poverty was overwhelming and had an indelible impact on her young daughter who could not get her head around children begging on the streets. On the other hand, in a way that is impossible to find anywhere else on the planet, she also found India relaxing and inspiring - Goa and Kerala in particular. Even crazy tuktuk rides through Mumbai were one of the great highlights of the trip. Alderson takes a breezily philosophical stance on traveling. She remains steadfastly upbeat and thankful that they were

lucky and never really had any terrible experiences. Although she caught Dengue and Giardia in Bali, she remarks that it could have been way worse - she could’ve had both illnesses at the same time! “It’s just part and parcel of living somewhere exotic,” she wrote. “I would never let fear put me off going somewhere.” The trip gave her a huge dose of reality and gratitude. Two-thirds of the book is set in Bali. Shortly after the family arrived on the island, they just knew that it was the place they wanted to live. Bali had many of the things they were looking for: sunshine, a sense of community, a great school and a relaxed environment. Penestanan was far less developed than it is now. They loved the area, appreciated how contained it was and that it had a harmonious neighborly feel. She at last had the space and time to be amazingly creative and productive. They supported themselves with earnings from her writing while her husband John co-founded Hubud and also set up a design business in Singapore. All those 10-hour days writing, writing, writing eventually paid off. While living in Bali, Alderson wrote 12 books. She has since become a published author of fiction and a successful screenwriter for TV and film.

C/E/I-23 Nov 16

One challenge she faced while living in Ubud was that it was a small town full of wonderful characters, but she had to be careful of what she said. In spite of a few who questioned her parental judgment and found issue with how much she cursed, the blog soon captured the attention of many eager to escape and who found the information on living in a vastly different culture inspiring. Through her experiences, you are able to sense the true reality of traveling and appreciate the blessed existence that we in the West are privileged to. Perhaps her story is not that altogether unique - at least not for foreigners living in Bali - but it is for a lot of people outside of that world. She still gets many emails from people who are stuck in the rat race and trying to find a way out. Can I Live Here? is a primer for people of any age or background who are thinking about quitting their jobs and moving abroad to revitalize their lives. Expats who live in Bali may recognize some of the people and places in the book and also may have shared similar experiences. Her prolonged journey of personal growth is also for those who simply want an enjoyable summer read.

THERE’S A BAT IN MY BELFRY Many Ubud folk, upon waking in the morning, will undertake the usual ablutions and then wander to the kitchen to prepare a cup of freshly ground Bali Arabica. They slowly imbibe this glorious brew while watching spears of morning sunlight paint the lush tropical garden and perhaps mulling over the day to come. If only. My living area is outside. For the past month, my first task upon completing the aforementioned ablutions is to open the front door and assess the damage of the night before. Because for weeks a single fruit bat has taken to roosting in my high peaked roof while digesting a truly astonishing volume of fruit. The creature always situates itself in the same place, directly over a corner of my dining table, and the residue of its feast falls on a corner of the table and a predicable part of the floor. I try to remember to move the table, cover it and the preferred bit of floor with newspapers before I go out in the evening. Often I forget. I used to think my nocturnal visitor would lurk about until I left the house before commencing its solitary party. This bat does not punch a clock, it may drop by just after sunset or in the wee hours. Sometimes when I’m home and reading in another room the tell-tale clonk of a big seed falling from a great height alerts me to a particularly early visit, rousing the dogs to impotent fury.

Shouting strongly worded invitations to decamp while waving a tea towel has no effect on the bat’s repose As an enthusiastic amateur student of natural history I’m more interested than disgusted by what is decorating my floor and furniture. Sometimes it’s neat little green disks with dimpled surfaces, quite dry. Less easy to remove is the residue in fig season. Often it is long glossy seeds with pointed ends, the length of a match. I wonder whether there might be commercial opportunities in selling these as an alternative to kopi luwak if colonies of bats could be persuaded to produce them in industrial quantities. We could market it as kopi kelelawak or, as they are known in my house, malam-malam. Why would any self-respecting bat want to hang out in my house rather than the dense jungle beyond my garden? Who knows what great concepts may lurk in the admittedly small thinking box of the little mammal, but this seasonal visitation has been going on for years now. I can only imagine it is the same bat returning each time. Perhaps it remembers where the succulent fruit grows, or maybe it has some other agenda. Sometimes the evidence of the visit suggests a whole colony of partying bats, but I have never in fact seen more than one at a time. The bat is either fearless or socialised or both. Shouting strongly worded invitations to decamp while waving a tea towel has no effect on the bat’s repose. Only when I drag in a very long bamboo pole and tickle its tail does it languidly

flap away. But clearly this is an entertaining game because it quickly returns with a new payload. And wielding a 5 metre long bamboo in a confined space while in a bad temper is perilous for the objets d’art. In the season of the flying termites it’s double jeopardy around here. Sometime during the rains when all the planets are aligned and the temperature and humidity are just right, swarms of flying insects erupt out of the earth. These are subterranean termites emerging for a blink-brief opportunity to mate before they die a few hours later. Thousands of them appear in minutes, drawn to any light, usually just after sunset.

C/BM/G-2 March 16

I have encountered bats all over Southeast Asia. Bukitinggi, one of Sumatra’s better-kept secrets, is perched on the edge of a dramatic geological fault line. In the bottom of the fault and in trees on both sides live colonies of giant fruit bats, known affectionately by locals as ‘flying dogs’. During the day they seem slightly comic and disoriented, hanging upside down from tree branches like bizarre umbrellas. Occasionally they take a clumsy practice turn or two, muttering and squeaking quietly as if being careful not to waken their friends. With a wingspan of over a metre and bodies the size of a fox, they look terribly clumsy close to the ground. But this seeming ungainliness disappears at dusk when small groups detach themselves from the trees and lumber down the canyon with uncanny grace. Gaining height as they head south, the groups merge and in a few minutes the sky over the fault is dense with classic bat shapes. High overhead now, the scalloped wings flap languidly. Then the silhouettes glide away until they’re united with the darkness. It’s quite a show. One night in a rural Thai market I puzzled over the patterns of delicate bones splayed on a bamboo frame before I realized they were tiny dried bats. The small child beside me sucked thoughtfully on a claw-like bat foot as she watched me figure this out. In North Sulawesi I was offered bat soup for lunch and quickly embraced vegetarianism. In Bali, two decades ago, I encountered an ancient man outside a shop on Monkey Forest Road cradling an old shotgun, two dead bats beside him. “Makan,” he said.

If you happened to have gone out and left the lights on, you will come home to find every flat surface heaving with frantically pairing brown bodies and clouds of wings centimetres deep. They are very messy to clean up but the house lizards have a glorious time. If I am home I turn out all the lights but one, and place a bowl of water under it. This is a very effective flying termite trap and makes it easy to feed them to the chickens the next day. One evening a friend had come for dinner. The bat had arrived particularly early and roosted immediately over Alex’s head despite our noisy objections. Just then the annual termite swarm began and for a few minutes there was chaos. Wine glasses were covered with napkins, lights extinguished, the termite trap put out and our place settings hurriedly shifted. For a while we sat companionably in the dark as legions of termites fluttered to a watery demise and the bat enjoyed his dinner aloft. Sometimes it’s hard to explain life in the tropics to friends in Vancouver. Perhaps I am unfilial in declining to welcome the bat into my belfry because bats, like orang utans, are our distant relatives. They are amazing creatures. The brains of flying foxes have more in common with primates than they do with rodents. Their hands have four fingers and a thumb, just like ours. They have a sonar system 1,000 times more sophisticated than anything we’ve ever developed. Some bats live to be nearly 30 years old. When migrating, bats can cruise at over 10,000 feet.

My little fruit bat declines to consume mosquitoes or flying termites and is too small to eat even should I wish to do so. Perhaps its presence is to remind me that I’m actually a disturbance in its territory instead of the other way around.

MUSIC MATTERS Greetings live music acolytes and welcome to this, another (straight from the trenches) edition of Music Matters in your one and only local neighbourhood Bali Advertiser. To d a y w e a r e taking a brief look at the Onion Bar in Sanur and new highlights going on for the New Year, but first let’s talk about a band that has not only done exceptionally well in Indonesia and Bali but has also bridged the cultural divide and their music is now heard and more importantly seen a four hour plane flight away in a desert bad land known to everyone in the know, as Perth. It was another hot night the beers were flowing, the sun was setting, and the scene was reminiscent of a typical Bali beach day but this was a Bali beach day with a difference as firstly the sun was hotter, the sand was not from a beach but normal red sand dirt of the outback and a train in the immediate background made an appearance on many occasions to one hundred percent remind onlookers that this was not Sanur or Seminyak, but indeed was the great Australian dream and the realisation of a band dark by name but light by spirits dream.

After that convo the deal was done we got an Uber (kind of like Gojek but a car and MUCH pricier) to the venue, ordered a round of cold bevies, sat down on a wooden bench and enjoyed the Bali experience in a sunny but definitely cooler beer garden in the heart of the city. The band noticeably shivering got on stage and belted out some old school classic rock Led Zeppelin, Metallica, GnR, Ozzie, Deep Purple etc. and did a staggeringly good rendition of TNT by legendary Aussie rockers AC/DC I guess they realised that Bon Scotts grave was just down the road and they didn’t want to offend his ghost! They were a class act from start to finish and although the crowd was smaller here they are starting to get a bit of a following in the city. Mainly sticking to covers for this gig to be safe they did occasionally slide a few of their own riffs and songs in when freestyling and messing around between sets. The band consisting of (in no particular order) Oley Putu - (Bass) Jimmy Agus (Lead Guitar) Brian Rodan ( Manager and Guitar) Made Dekong (Keyboard) Yogi (Drums) and last but by no means least the formidable (Koming) ripping up the vocals.

TNT was like the band have become, an international affair with some Australian guest musicians gracing the stage to give it an authentic edge. It all started, as it usually does for me with a phone call. One My favorite tune out of the blue message leading on to bigger better and the band kicked out was definitely what I know them for over in Bali was Dream Theater, that slow progressive rock which ultimately darker experiences. builds into 4 - 5 and even 6 minute blistering drum crescendos and shredding lead guitar. And without doubt the drummer RING RING RING RING Yogi and the incredibly talented Jimmi Agus (or do I mean “HI SUP” Hendrix?) just rolled and rolled gelling perfectly together, these “Toby, it’s Haley we need to go to the Carlisle!” “The Carlile! In gods name why would I want to go there?” boys have raw talent! “Remember that awesome Indo band that plays at Chapil The band who have been together 4 years or so were as a and Santa Fe ?” whole was excellent and even with some questionable vocal “Uh?? which one there are a few!” “No the one which kicks ass and you got up and sung with???” translations smashed out tune after tune for four whole hours entertaining the crowd and bringing some much needed Bali “Oh, you mean the black whatsits? culture to Perthshire. Shadows?” “Yea” “Well their in Perth and playing one night in the Carlisle tonight After the gig, I caught up with and Oley Putu and had a chat about what the bloody hell they were doing over here! in one hour!” TJB: “Hi dude, enjoying Perth?” “Get out!”

C/Ho/G-28 Sept. 16

Putu: “No its too cold!” TJB: “So what gives, why are you here, and what the Robinson Crusoe are you doing in this dive??” Putu: “Well the manager (Brian) brings us over here maybe 2 X a year we do a few gigs then go home it’s cool we have played here, the Lakers Tavern, and a place called the Indi Bar. He sets it up and then we just get on the plane and go!” TJB: “Cool! So you want to do more over here?” Putu: “Yea eventually right now though we are still building a name for ourselves over in Bali. We have been working with Brian to try and increase our profile here but over there we have been playing with some big names like Baron Suprayogi and Gungan Blues Shelter which has been awesome!” TJB, “And what about your own stuff?” Putu: “Yea we have been working on it hopefully we will have a demo out next year sometime, but you know Bali no rush right.” (he laughs) TJB: “And Brian has been helping you guys kick ass and take names?” Putu “Yea man he has really helped us here and at home, it’s always better when you can get a fair wage you know. Some places underpay and he plays pretty good guitar which is a bonus!” TJB: “Ok great catching up man and see you back home after Xmas in more familiar surroundings!” The Black Shadows usually play in the Chapil Bar (Seminyak) and also at Santa Fe bar (Seminyak) and are definitely one of the top bands on the island so go check them out before they become so famous you will need to pay an entrance fee! Ok well sorry to say that about wraps up this article of Music Matters. Just time to say that the word on the street is big things are underway at the Onion Bar in Sanur with live music being not only featured on the menu but is actually becoming the main course but more on that in the next issue. Ok well from me and mine to you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and see you all in the new year for more music news reviews and general debauchery, until then remember to keep it live and make it matter! Bali’s Sunday Brunches by Anita Food stations, cuisines from around the world and plenty of style – this is Bali living at its best. Not sure what to do this weekend? Why not try one of the island’s legendary all-you-can-eat weekend brunches. A portmanteau of the words breakfast and lunch, the term first originated in 19th century England to describe a Sunday meal for “Saturday night carousers.” Regardless of whether this sounds familiar, why not end your week with an indulgent feast. From sophisticated to casual and child friendly, here is a brief guide to point you in the right direction.

station and a steam bun station. Head inside for a more traditional buffet that abounds in culinary sensations such as crabs, oysters, salmon, a lavish selection of desserts, and much, much more. Sunday Brunch at Boneka (St. Regis Bali, Nusa Dua)

of the restaurant make a great all round family day out. The international flavors on offer range from artisanal cheeses and meats, and freshly baked pastries, all the way to Middle Eastern delicacies, Japanese Teppanyaki and traditional Indonesian fare. The lavish brunch also features around 20 live stations, including an Asian wok station and a seafood station, for those who prefer made-to-order dishes. The menu changes each week depending on the seasonal availability of local produce. A brunch would be nothing sans dessert, and Feast’s version does not disappoint. The sweet banquet includes treats such as gelato and locally crafted Pod chocolates. The outdoor market features stalls selling handmade crafts, groceries and fresh produce. There is also a live band to help guests make the most of the leisurely experience.

Weekend Chic Brunch at Cut Catch Cucina (Sofitel, Nusa Dua) Offering its brunch both on Saturdays and Sundays, Sofitel’s Chic Brunch is more of a weekend affair than a Sunday extravaganza. Having been recongnized as one of the world’s top ten hotel brunches by the Condé Nast Traveler magazine, this is one of the most popular brunches not just in Nusa Dua, but also on the island. Let’s just say it definitely pays to make a reservation. Billing itself as “the originator” of Sunday Brunches on the island, Boneka’s brunch offers both a buffet and an a la carte menu of indulgent treats. The sophisticated experience kicks off with aperitifs at the resort’s King Cole Bar – including the venue’s signature Bloody Mary. The international spread features an outdoor grill station that serves up fish, oysters and a selection of meats, and an indoor section featuring an extensive range of hors-d’oeuvres, fine cheeses, dim sum, soups, salads, as well as an array of hot dishes. Alternatively, indulge in the la minute specialties continually passed around by the waiters as you gaze over St. Regi’s tropical gardens and the ocean. Even more enticing than the buffet, the a la carte menu consists of eight egg dishes, including foie gras and egg, as well as a chef’s creation section with a list of Indonesian and international favorites. There is also a tantalizing selection of desserts, including Indonesian and international sweets, a Valrhona chocolate fountain and a selection of gelato. Parent’s will be pleased to know that while they feast, their 4 to 12 year olds can socialize with other little people at the resort’s Children’s Learning Center. Please note that St. Regi’s pool and beach facilities are for hotel guests only.

As the name suggests, the buffet is divided into three sections: CUT features premium meats including Angus, Wagyu and Kurobuta, as well as organic poultry; CATCH serves a selection of fresh seafood; and CUCINA offers Italian dishes such as pasta and pizza. Additional sections offer lavish spreads of salads, cheeses, sushi, sashimi and decadent desserts. There is also an a la carte menu – which features such delicacies as lobster and foie gras - for those who prefer their meal made-to-order. Cost: IDR499K++ including food and non alcoholic drinks; IDR699K++ including food and alcohol (wine); and IDR1,399K++ including food and premium alcohol (wine and champagne). Kids under 12 eat for free (conditions apply).

Time: 12 pm – 3 pm http://www.sofitel-bali-nusadua.com/en/cut-catch-cucina.html http://www.sheratonbalikuta.com/en/forms/market-brunch Sunday Lobster Brunch at Layang Layang (Fairmont, Sanur)

FunDay Family Brunch at Prego (The Westin, Nusa Dua) Catering to families, Prego’s Sunday brunch is all about fun and quality food. With a buffet and an a la carte menu of classic Italian dishes, and a live barbecue station, offering a fine selection of grilled delicacies, including porchetta on a spit, the brunch is a perfect complement to Bali’s leisurely Sundays. The made-to-order dishes are prepared in the restaurant’s open-plan kitchen under the watchful eye of Chef Alessandro Molini. From salads and antipasti to pasta, pizza and roasted meats, the menu has something to satisfy all tastes. The dessert station serves an assortment of mouth-watering treats including cakes, crapes and gelato.

Time: 11 am – 12 pm – Aperitifs at the King Cole Bar 12 pm – 3 pm – Brunch at Boneka http://www.stregisbali.com/boneka-restaurant

The W really knows how to whip up a recipe for the perfect afternoon. Every Sunday, Fire’s indoor and outdoor areas transform into a feast for the senses. The Hawker House Street Feast consists of just that - a colorful Southeast Asian marketplace that comes alive each week on the restaurant’s patio. The bustling food bazaar features numerous live cooking stations and some of the best – and most up-market - street food this side of Asia. Some of the more instagram-worthy stations include a laksa station, a grill station, an Asian wok

Cost: IDR 360K++ for buffet, non-alcoholic drinks and groceries; IDR 180K++ for children between 4 and 12; IDR250K++ for free flow of local beer, wine and signature cocktails; IDR 750,000K++ for free flow of champagne.

Time: Every Saturday and Sunday 11:00 am – 3 pm

Cost: IDR 690K net brunch package including aperitifs at the King Cole Bar from 11 am to 12 pm and a brunch at Boneka from 12 pm to 3 pm; IDR 990K net additional beverage package including sparkling wine; IDR 345K net package for children between the ages of 4 and 12. Children under 4 eat for free.

Hawker House Street Feast at Fire (The W, Seminyak)

Families rejoice because this is one of the most child-friendly brunches on the island. Not only does the restaurant have custom-made kiddy-sized tables and chairs, as well as a special kids menu, but a designated play area with numerous activities such as burger making and coloring. There is also dedicated staff to keep the little ones entertained and safe while the adults laze away the afternoon. There is even a dog care station for your four-legged family member.

Dive taste buds first into Layang Layang’s lobster-icious goodness. Featuring a buffet and an a la carte menu, as well as a wide range of small “pass around” tasters, Fairmont’s brunch delivers on all fronts. Let’s face it, any of us could do much worse than lobster laksa, lobster pasta, lobster bisque, and grilled lobster with garlic butter and lime. While lobsterbased dishes take up most of the menu, the brunch also offers numerous other options including cheeses, epicurean meats, and seafood dishes including risotto and grilled salmon. What better way to complete a great meal than a free run of Layang Layang’s dessert bar. Watch out for the home-made ice cream and lavish pastry-based sweets. Better still, savor all this while listening to some of the best tunes on the island.

The little ones will love the outdoor play area, and their very own mini buffet with hot dogs, burgers, fairy floss and pop-corn making facilities. Some of the activities on offer include cupcake decorating and PlayStation duels. In addition, Pippo the Squirrel makes regular rounds of the buffet area, offering great photo opportunities for the whole family. The staff from the Westin Family Kids Club is on hand to supervise all bambinos so parents can rest assured that their little ones are not just entertained but also taken care of. All brunch guests receive complementary access to the resort’s Premium Wing swimming pool, an ideal spot to cool off after hours of feasting. Cost: IDR 360K++ including food, welcome glass of prosecco (sparkling white wine from Italy), free flow of soft drinks and signature ice teas. Kids eat for free (special conditions apply).

Cost: IDR 490K++ (Free for children under 5 and half price for children between 5 and 12)

How To Learn Online I often use online tutoring to help my ten-year old daughter with schoolwork or to ¿nd sources that can teach her what she doesn’t learn in school. Especially in areas where I can’t help her (coding) or in areas where I may know subjects well but can’t explain them effectively (math, science.) Here is a list of sites for online learning. Some of these I have used myself (EdX, Khan Academy) and some are new to me. There is a mix of sites for young learners and adults. I covered skill-sharing websites in a previous column – topics like knitting, cooking, yoga, etc. You can ¿nd this article in the archives. OPEN CULTURE (http://www.openculture.com) curates the best free cultural and educational media on the web. The site offers access to over 1,200 free courses and also offers access to audio books, movies, language learning, textbooks, eBooks and paid certi¿cate courses. KHAN ACADEMY (https://www.khanacademy.org) This is my go-to site as a parent of a ten-year old who is struggling with math anxiety. It’s the brainchild of Sal Khan, an American who earned degrees in math, electrical engineering and computer science, as well as an MBA. While working as a hedge fund analyst, Khan began to tutor one of his young cousins back in India, who was having trouble learning math, by making instructional videos. After other family members also asked to use the videos, Khan began to post the tutorials on You Tube, where they became wildly popular. This gave Khan the idea of setting up an online school where anyone could learn from his videos for free. The Khan Academy’s mission is to provide ‘a free world-class education for everyone, anywhere.’ All you need is a computer and Internet access. The site’s videos are mostly in English, but also available in other languages. The site offers ‘practice exercises, instructional videos and a personalized learning dashboard’ that allows learners to move through the course offerings at their own pace and keep track of what they’re learning and how fast they are progressing. My daughter can log in to her dashboard, see what lessons she recently viewed and get suggestions about which new videos to watch. If she has a particular math challenge, i.e. negative numbers or how division works, we can ¿nd videos that will explain these concepts clearly to her. My daughter frequently comments that while she is confused in school, and often equally confused by my explanations, one video on Khan Academy usually makes things clear to her. The course offerings on Khan Academy are heavy on math and science, with subjects in computing, economics, ¿nance and humanities. There is also a section for US-based college and graduate school admission test preparation, i.e. SAT, MCAT, etc. Khan Academy has formed partnerships with educational institutions, such as MIT, NASA, The California Academy of Sciences, The Museum of Modern Art and others, to provide specialized content. MOOCs, or Massive Open Online Courses, are free or low-cost educational programs designed for unlimited participation and open access, regardless of geographic location or background, providing a student has Internet access. MOOCs, which emerged in 2012, are a recent development in remote or distance education and have been quickly increasing in popularity. Popular MOOC sites include Udacity, Coursera and EdX. Early courses favored information technology and science topics, but more recently the number of arts, humanities and business courses is growing. EdX (https://www.edx.org) is a non-pro¿t whose goal is to bring ‘the best of higher education to students of all ages anywhere in the world, wherever there is Internet access.’ While most of the courses are free, students can pay a fee to obtain a

certi¿cate of completion. EdX partnered with top schools around the world, such as Harvard, MIT, Columbia University, The Sorbonne, McGill, Oxford University and many others. EdX currently lists hundreds of courses on their site. EdX also offers a Micro-Masters Program, consisting of graduate level courses designed to advance your career, ACE Alternative Credit Project, for adults wanting to return to college to complete a degree or credential as well as two online programs – Global Freshman Academy and Charter Oak State College – offering transferable college credit for college students through accredited US-based colleges. UDACITY (https://www.udacity.com) is tech-heavy, with courses that focus on data science, machine learning and programming. Udacity offers a paid ‘Nano-Degree’ course, which feeds into a recruitment program in partnership with tech companies such as Google and Adobe. If a student enrolls in the paid Nano-Degree Plus program, Udacity offers a full tuition refund if a graduate is unable to ¿nd a job with one of their partner companies within six months of ¿nishing. COURSERA (https://www.coursera.org) is another partnership between an online learning site and global schools. Courses on this site range in price from $29 - $99. The courses focus on business, computer and data science, and include recorded video lectures, auto-graded and peer-reviewed assignments, and community discussion forums. When you complete a course, you receive a sharable electronic Course Certi¿cate. Two specialized learning sites offer just coding training. Coding is the process of designing, writing, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and maintaining the source code of computer programs. In other words, if you can code, your skills are in a great demand and you could think about getting a well-paid job at Google, Apple or a host of other tech companies, even remotely. CODEACADEMY (https://www.codecademy.com) is a teaching website dedicated just to coding. Sessions include an interactive live practice window, so you can practice coding while still viewing the lesson. Students have a central dashboard that allows them to monitor their progress and organize lessons into modules, so they can focus on learning speci¿c coding languages to a higher level by taking increasingly harder courses. CODE (https://code.org/learn) is another good teaching website that focuses on coding and app writing. Code is kid-friendly and has a number of courses just for young learners. This site also offers free classes on a wide variety of technology topics, such as robotics. Code is teacher-friendly as most of the courses can be taught in a classroom setting. Other learning sites you may want to check out include: Udemy https://www.udemy.com/ Academic Earth http://academicearth.org Alison https://alison.com - free online courses from the world’s top publishers iTunesU Free Courses - must be an iPhone, iPad or iPod user Stanford Online http://online.stanford.edu/courses - Stanford online courses Harvard Extension http://www.extension.harvard.edu - Harvard online courses Yale Online http://oyc.yale.edu -- Yale online learning

PREPPING FOR THE HOLIDAY PARTY The holiday season is upon us. There will be Christmas parties and dinners and then a week later it will be New Year’s Eve, which is always a big night out. Be it you’re going out for a romantic dinner with your partner or to a bash with hundreds of people, we all desire to look our best. It makes no difference if we’re a lady or a man. Everybody wants to look great for these special occasions. So what do you need to look fantastic? Maybe a new frock and shoes. What about your hair, nails, face and skin? The Shampoo Lounge has everything for men and women with forty staff members to serve singles or groups of people. This spa has grown quite large during the past few years on two levels. Ladies TSL has prepared a special Party Prep Package which consists of: • Hair wash and blow dry • Make up • Manicure They have five hair stylists to give you a “great hair day”. I had seen a favourite TV show with a woman whose hair style I fell in love with. I wondered if my hair would look the same. I brought in my laptop and showed a video clip to Ade, one of the hair stylists. He assured me he could do this for me. I decided to go the extra mile and also have my hair cut before the blow dry.

treatment, ombre-dip dye-balayage, and hair extensions. Eyelash extensions, waxing, a full range of nail services for manicure/ pedicure including acrylic & acrylic gel, make-up and a great selection of facials. They also have six massage beds upstairs for TSL Signature massage, warm lava stone body, Traditional Balinese, Ahhh- romatherapy, Cellulite control, mom to be, athletic, soothing hot stone foot reflexology. If you’ve just arrived and need a quick tan they offer spray tanning with Black Magic.

C/He/G-16 March 16

Guys Even the guys would like to look great for the holiday parties. They have a special package for you dudes called Bali Big Boss, which consists of scissor hair-cut, hot towel traditional wet shave and wash scalp massage with aloe vera. If you’ve never had a traditional wet shave with a straight edge razor, you’re missing out on an old fashioned tradition of luxurious pampering. At one time all gentlemen went to a barber for this ritual prior to World War 1.

C/BS/G-3 Feb. 16

During the war Gillette invented the safety razor for soldiers to carry with them into the war zone. Since then most men use some sort of safety razor and rarely go to a barber for this decadent treatment. Don’t worry, all ten barbers are highly skilled with their razors and taught English daily. Barbershops in the States are frequently referred to as “poor man’s country clubs,” and this place is the ultimate man cave with cold Bintangs, whiskeys, comfy chairs, spa staff available for that foot massage or nail trimming while waiting. Their famous “Sports Massages,” quite popular among the many surfers, CrossFit, body builders, MMA, and yoga enthusiasts on the island. The Barber Spa section features men’s aesthetic services such as facials to remove road dust, waxing for the smoother gents, and spray tanning for a healthy beach glow.

I really enjoyed the relaxing shampoo head massage and then was escorted to a hair throne and had a cape placed around my shoulders. Then Ade snipped away several centimeters of hair, falling around my chair, moving from side to side of my head with his scissors. And then he plugged in the hair dryer and blew the hair into a fashionable style. When he finished he took a large mirror and showed me my hair from every angle. Was I pleased? Yes, indeed! After this, I was led upstairs to the make-up room. Here I met their make-up artist, who sat me down and assessed my face. He asked where I was going and what I would be wearing that night to determine what look I wished to present to my fellow party goers. They use MAC and Sephora make-up products. After blending in a suitable foundation for my skin he began adding touches to highlight or diminish where appropriate. Because this was an evening event he gave me smoky eyes for a sultry look.

There’s one of Bali’s best Tattoo Studios up in the loft managed by Canggu famous Bold & Bright artists placing an emphasis upon individualized designs using the best imported ink that will hold its color for a lifetime. Ink is forever so this is the place to go for ultra quality workmanship in a sterile environment. But wait there’s more…There’s a full time “Dreadspert” on staff and quite busy attending to the many dreaded heads on the island. And if that’s not enough, they deliver and can be frequently seen attending to the many villa soirees, weddings, and photo shoots on the island. When you’re looking for a great salon to get gorgeous for the holidays head to The Shampoo Lounge. This friendly place has everything you desire to make you look great. 2016 The Bali Sports Year in Review As we come to the close of 2016, This Sporting Life looks back at the year that was for sport in Bali and some notable exploits that stand out. Many regular events kicked on the Bali Scene, the Bali Rugby Fest, Bali AFL Masters, Soccer 6’s, Bali Ocean Swim.A few new ones like the Tough Mudder in Jimbaran, Mad Hueys Surf Comp at Komune, with intrepid event organizers trying the sports market in Bali. This Sporting Life highlights a few memorable performances like the Geckos finally winning the Asian Champs after numerous attempts and “Widi” who 8 years ago could be found crawling on all fours as a polio victim in North Bali, now the toast of the nation, feted by all from President Jokowi down. Also every sports events organizers dream , selling out registration in 2 weeks as was the case of this year’s Bali Marathon. This Sporting Life also looks at two events held regularly for almost two decades that regularly go under the radar as they are either niche sports such as Ultimate Frisbee in one case or a bit out of the way up in the bukit as the Cricket Sixes.

at the Paralympics since its inception in 1960.With the bronze Widi has improved on her 5th place at the London Paralympics. This great performance has lead Widi followed her gold medal at the Singapore ASEAN Paragames in December, 2015.

at the Grand Bali Beach soccer/football field with teams from around SE Asia. Although Japan and Singapore lead Asia in Ultimate Frisbee development in Asia, Ultimate Frisbee Indonesia has developed and they have annually hosted the now world-famous Bali Nusantara Cup since 2000, that is traditionally held during Easter Weekend here in Bali, attracting many participants.

The 5th Bali Marathon held on Sunday, 28 August 2016, sold out in two weeks, with 5000 participants. The organisers limited the participants to a maximum of 5,000 runners only, of which 1,500 were allocated for the 10K event of the marathon, popular with Indonesian runners. The race was held in its usual location of the streets and country roads of Bali’s Gianyar regency and as usual the main event was won by Kenyan runners.

The second event also held on Easter, now in its 20th year, the Bali International Cricket Sixes was started by a group led by Terrance Fimstone (The Bali International Cricket Club – BICC) in Easter 1997 and aimed to promote cricket for enjoyment in Bali for all ages and types of cricketer. The BICC continued the organisation until 2009 under Ian Jasper. In 2010, management of these auspicious local Sixes was taken by The Udayana Cricket Club, based at Udayana University, the first all Indonesian managed, residential club in the Indonesia. Over 16 teams competed in 2016.

To all our readers Season Greetings (if of that faith) and Happy New Year. See you in 2017.

Best Team Performance – Bali Geckos The Bali Geckos AFL football club in 2016 achieved a long sought after goal of winning the Asian AFL Championships, by defeating the Myanmar Fighting Cocks in the Grand Final, held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on October 15. After a tough and bruising march through the group games and semi’s,rain greeted the teams for the grand final and wet weather footy made for a dour match as a spectacle but ensured the tougher and more committed team would prevail in the testing conditions. The Geckos dominated early and held onto that lead throughout the final with a comfortable winning score of 35 to 10. Justin Langridge, who dominated in the front half for the Geckos, was named in the All Asian team.

Best Individual Performance– Ni Nengah Widiasih Bali Sports Foundation’s I Nengah Widiasih capped off a golden 12 months, winning Indonesia’s only medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Coming third in Powerlifting in the up to 41Kg class, Widi as she popularly known lifted 95kg for her bronze. Her medal is the first medal ever won by Indonesia

Local News Kiwi Woman Killed when Contiki Minivan Crashed off a Cliff in Lombok Grieving family have flown to Indonesia to bring home the body of a young Kiwi woman killed when a Contiki minivan crashed off a cliff. Danielle Angus, 23, was one of seven people travelling to a surf beach in South Lombok. Two other New Zealanders, an Australian, two Americans and the driver were also in the van. Rescue workers tried for over an hour to free the trapped travellers. Angus, a Contiki staff member from Takapuna, was pulled from the wreckage. But she died before arriving at the hospital in Mataram, the capital of the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara. Cahya Dibrata, a doctor from Lombok International Medical Service, said two other New Zealanders were treated for serious injuries in hospitals in Mataram. Family were supporting Jae Chambers, 23, from Auckland, and Abbey Moore, 29, from Christchurch. The vehicle was part of a convoy of four travelling to a surf school excursion organised by locals. The three other vehicles were not involved in the crash. [Stuff December 10, 2016]

Brazilian Expat Operating Martial Arts Studio Dies A Brazilian expatriate working in Bali as a martial arts instructor died in a late night motorcycle accident on Jalan Raya Pantai Brawa on Monday, December 5, 2016. As reported by RadarBali.com, Silvio Romero da Silva, an MLA fighter and proprietor of a martial arts studio in Bali was driving a Kawasaki Ninja 250 cc motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet when he ran into the back of a goods truck at 2:30 am. Police believe da Silva may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident. His motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the back of the truck hit the truck with sufficient force to break the motorbikes steering column. Da Silva died at the scene of the accident and remained unidentified for nearly 10 hours at the morgue because the Brazilian was carrying no identification at the time of the accident. At Least 45,000 Homeless After Aceh Quake in Indonesia At least 45,000 people have been displaced by the powerful earthquake that hit Indonesia’s Aceh Province, the authorities said Saturday, as the government and aid agencies pooled efforts to meet the basic survival needs of shaken communities. The estimate of the number of homeless people continues to grow while relief efforts fan out across the three districts near the epicenter of Wednesday’s magnitude 6.5 quake. At least 100 people were killed and hundreds injured in the quake, which also destroyed or damaged more than 11,000 buildings, mostly homes but also several hundred mosques and schools. On Saturday, sniffer dogs were again used in the search for bodies and possible survivors in the devastated town of Meureudu, where a market filled with shop houses was largely flattened. President Joko Widodo traveled Friday to worst-hit areas of the province and promised to rebuild communities. [The New York Times December. 10, 2016]

Indonesia Tightens Security After Foiling Terrorist Bomb Plot in Jakarta Indonesian police Sunday ramped up security in the capital Jakarta after foiling a plot by Islamist militants to use a female suicide bomber to attack the country’s presidential palace. Investigators said the suspects who planned the attack are believed to be part of the same network of Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian extremist operating out of Syria, whom police believe had orchestrated previous attacks in the city in January that left four bystanders and four attackers dead. Jakarta Police Spokesman Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said police are closely watching government offices, shopping malls and department stores in addition to other public spaces that normally attract crowds during the weekend. On Saturday, Indonesian police arrested three suspected terrorists and safely detonated a 3-kilogram, high explosive “rice cooker” bomb on the outskirts of Jakarta, Mr. Yuwono said. The suspects were allegedly planning to attack the presidential palace during a changing-of-the-guard ceremony that is open for public viewing on Sunday mornings. Russian Caught with Drugs at Airport As is customary with big international drug-related arrests in Indonesia, a Russian national allegedly caught bringing in three kilograms of hashish to Bali was front and center of a press conference with Ngurah Rai customs officials. Footage from the press conference was posted to YouTube by local newspaper Tribun Bali, showing customs officers holding one of 27 tubes of Dant Kanti toothpaste that Russian man Roman Kalashnikov allegedly stuffed with cannabis extract.

English Runner Dies Weeks after Being Injured in Fall on Bali Nature Trail An Englishman, Andrew Rowson (49) originally from Manchester, England, died on Sunday, December 4, 2016, at the Wisma Kaliyuda in Legian. As reported by Metrobali.com, Rowson was found on the floor of his bathroom with traces of blood flowing from his mouth and nose. More than two weeks prior to his death, Rowson has fallen some five meters when he was walking near Bongkasa, Abiansemal, while making a survey for a running route for the Bali Hash House Harriers. Following the fall, Rowson was hospitalized for 12-days at the Siloam Hospital before being released on November 30,2016, with prescribed medications and instructions to report every few days to the hospital in order that his recovery could be monitored. The man reportedly suffered four broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder as a result of his fall. According to Hospital sources, the Englishman did not keep his follow-up appointments with the Hospital. [http://www.balidiscovery.com December 12, 2016] Widow of Bali Police Officer Rejects Compensation Offer The widow of the police officer allegedly murdered in Bali has rejected an offer for financial compensation from the Australian accused killer Sara Connor, indicating she wants the full force of the law to apply in the case. In a hand-written letter to the family of the dead officer Wayan Sudarasa, 46-year-old Connor, from Bryon Bay, expressed her “deepest sympathy.” “My bag was stolen, I tried to protect the late Mr Sudarsa by separating David from him,” Connor wrote. “But now because I tried to separate them I am in a terrible position.” The officer’s widow, Ketut Arsini, was questioned as a witness before the Denpasar District Court on Tuesday and immediately rejected the financial offer asking that the Australian and her British boyfriend to be punished severely in accordance with Indonesian law. Sara Connor and David Taylor face up to 15 years in jail if found guilty. They are being tried on charges of murder, assault causing death and group assault. [ ABC News December 13,2016] Man Electrocuted on Bali Billboard A man who was reportedly electrocuted in Klungkung, Bali yesterday has suffered burns on over 50 percent of his body, according to the hospital treating him. A horrifying video surfaced of the young man after the incident, wriggling on top of a billboard, looking as if we were about to fall down on to the street. According to reports, he didn’t fall, but was evacuated down, with some difficulties. The man in the video was identified in local reports as Harjo Winoto. He was rushed to Klungkung Hospital and he was described as being in a delirious state, local reports said. PLN, the state electricity company, says that the shoe store with the billboard that Winoto was on gave no notice to PLN about work on the billboard. [Coconuts Bali December 6, 2016]

Kalashnikov was reportedly arrested on Dec. 11 after landing in Bali from KL on Malindo flight OD 306. “So, the modus operandi is that the hashish was put into a paste and packaged in toothpaste tubes. It was well-organized, indeed, we know he was already extraordinarily organized,” head of Ngurah Rai Airport Customs Budi Harjanto said on Wednesday to the press.

Man Accused of Running Over and Killing Australian Woman in Benoa

Customs believes Kalashnikov purchased the drugs in Nepal and was bringing them to Bali for the Christmas and New Year’s rush. This was Kalashnikov’s second time in Bali-he visited in October to scope out the scene, customs says. Under Indonesian narcotics law, Kalashnikov could be facing punishments as harsh as the death penalty or life imprisonment, says Harjanto.

An Indonesian man on trial over allegedly killing an Australian woman during a hit and run accident in Benoa, Bali could get 18 months jail time if Bali prosecutors have their way.

Australian Tourist Laura Hawkins Bitten by a Monkey

Prosecutors made their demands for an 18-month term (minus time already served), arguing in Denpasar District Court on Wednesday that the defendant, Indonesian man, Benafentura Nggeo, 23, had consumed alcohol before the alleged crime. The alleged incident, where Nggeo is said to have crashed into Australian woman, Bernadette O’Connor, causing her death, was on July 31 around 1:30 am.

Travel agent Laura Hawkins used to encourage people to experience the monkey temples in Asia - until she was bitten by monkeys in Bali and faced a terrifying wait to see if she had rabies. “I was feeding the monkeys bananas and I ran out of food and one monkey wasn’t happy about that and just grabbed my hand and bit me,” the 29-year-old from Tweed Heads said. “The first thing I thought was rabies and ‘oh my God, I haven’t had the rabies vaccination’. “I flew home that night and went straight to the Tweed Heads hospital.” Ms Hawkins began the month-long treatment that required weekly injections of the vaccine and infusions of immunoglobulin before being cleared of rabies. [The Sunday Telegraph December 11, 2016]

Nggeo showed “recklessness” by not honking or slowing down when he hit O’Connor as she was crossing the road in front of Peninsula Beach Resort in Tanjung Benoa, prosecutors previously asserted during the trial in October. [Coconuts Bali December 7, 2016]

For many years I have written articles under a column entitled “Fixed Abode” published in the Bali Advertiser on a fortnightly basis. Fixed Abode began as an idea in the confused and tortured mind of a man who was foolish enough to attempt to provide property maintenance advice to home owners and renters in a land where “high level electrical skills” are defined as “being able to change the batteries in a vibrator” and draughtsmen learn their trade etching images of daggers and boobs on the bodies of unsuspecting drunks on Bali’s Kuta beach. Vaguely endeavouring to provide useful technical information in a format that could be understood even by Auntie Ethel’s budgie it quickly became obvious that the task of informing a retired pig shearer how to change the impellor of a contra rotating submersible pressure pump made teaching braille to a blind dog a relatively easy task and, worse than that, the subject matter is about as interesting as a nun’s nightie during lent.

Unfortunately there were those whose lives were so boring that they relished their fortnightly dose of utter codswallup and, surprisingly, the column survived for more years than I care to think about until even neurosurgeons were able to install lightbulbs and little old ladies could change their own vibrator batteries.

List your business here for free!

Fixed Abode was first published in January 2007 and so, after ten years, 251 offerings and somewhere around 375,000 words, Fixed Abode has finally run its course. It is time to hang up my pen and get my life back.

I’d like to take this opportunity of thanking all those people who have followed my ramblings through the years for their support and feedback. I’d like to thank the team at the Bali Advertiser for supporting the endeavour, particularly those in the typesetting department whose fortnightly struggle to squeeze my verbose offerings into the confines of two columns drove many to drink and the very brink of sanity. I’d also like to thank Auntie Ethel’s budgie for checking my grammar.

Inspired lists: A guide in hard times by Shelley Kenigsberg It’s the ‘holiday’ season soon, when many of us are keen (and able) to take a break from the year’s work, projects. We’re ready to recover from the fallout of the year’s challenges: reports of war or natural disasters or crazy political fights or monstrous events worldwide.

and, through that, more profoundly, understand how better to be human. But what about art being able to stop us feeling ‘listless’ (having no wind to fill the sails). Is art able to inspire us, buoy us, help navigate our way? Wood talks about how she struggled with the story material, while remaining obsessed with it. In her essay, ‘Art can transfigure hatred’, she asks, “where was the complexity in this blunt, stupid hatred? What was there to explore?… I was no activist, nor commentator, nor polemicist. I certainly didn’t see myself as a political writer. How could I respond?” And in grappling with it so deftly, Wood has used her art to respond and shine light powerfully. The power of art Of the many fine artists at 2016 UWRF, three-Anastasia Lin, Suki Kim, Halon Habila-grappled with another kind of ‘dark material’. They exposed the consequences of certain policies in authoritarian regimes (China, North Korea, Nigeria respectively) and, through their books, gave us insight into cultures significantly different from our own.

Yet, in the holiday lead up, we’re besieged again. This time, it’s lists: the 100 best books of the year; the 20 best albums; 2016’s 25 best blogs; the 10 best Xmas dessert recipes and, in an attempt to eschew ‘regular’ numbers, the 12 most covetable gifts of 2016 or-fill in the blanks. By listing, we’re advised how to choose from the plethora of offerings threatening to overwhelm us in the rush to relax and recharge. An effective tool this listing. Marketers and media love a list. With so much to choose from it’s excellent to have a guide we trust. I love a reliable curator to help me sift through the offerings. I expect most of us do. But at this particular time, at a time when Breitbart News is spreading, it feels more vital than before. For many, 2016 was an extremely challenging year, even bleak overall. And notwithstanding our personal ‘highs’, it’s fair to say there has been universal tumult and fear. Indeed, there’s another meaning of listing that is worth thinking about. It’s listing, but in the nautical sense; the extent of leaning to one side [of a ship] that is damaged or loaded improperly. Feel familiar? Haven’t we been lurching from side to side through the squalls of world events? Finding a safe harbour Well, with this kind of listing, comes questioning. How are we not to despair when dystopian stories start pouring over the bow? Achieve equilibrium? Keep hopeful, even, about our direction? I’m convinced (as a dedicated consumer of it) that it’s through art that we find a way through the tumult. That by being immersed in and consuming (in the best way) the richness of imaginative and creative expression-in the form of a piece of writing or music or painting or poem or dance-we can find our way to a safe harbour. And there are guides to these safe places. Just as it has for 12 years before, this 13th year of UWRF provided yet another exceptional curation of the finest writers and artists around our region (and, indeed, the world) to open our eyes, hearts, minds and bring us a piece of meaning. One of this year’s stellar lineup, Charlotte Wood, was here with her award-winning fifth novel-The Natural Way of Things. It’s a deeply moving, shocking even, story of women imprisoned in remote Australian bush land and vilified for speaking up about their sexual molestation. It’s drawn from the true story of Hay Institute (Australian girls home in 1970s), and more recent Australian stories involving public coverage of sexual molestation. While the content is grim and sounds dystopian, the book is not. Because it’s in shining light into dark, tortured places that we can effect relief, can bring healing. In fact, it’s the power of artistic expression, here and in the great variety of writing offered at UWRF, that can reinvigorate our understanding of the world; of other people’s experiences

In these cases too, it’s clear that art is important because it illuminates the dark, helps us see commonalities between peoples and find ways to combat differences. It helps us relate to and connect with others. The triumph of artistic expression - in an increasingly untethered world - is that it can provide anchors and hope. PEN America’s blog (7 Dec 2016) begins: “No poet, no playwright, no essayist, no novelist willingly traffics in cliché. We do our best to find original language and new ways to think and speak and see. But dire times call for old truths. Among them, courage, devotion and compassion; honesty, clarity and duty. Sacrifice. On the brink of what feels like a war on reality, every artist must rise in defense of our better nature; in defense not only of free expression, but of cornball verities like truth and earnestness and honor and bravery.” Donald Maass, in ‘Putting your purpose on the page’ also voices this sentiment. While putting purpose on the page may be a motherhood statement it apt, I think, when we’re looking to art for purpose, for relief. And, lest this all sound dour and relentlessly depressing, we’re looking to art to also, very often (if not always), entertain. “Fiction changes the world,” concludes Maass. “It has before. It will again. Do not doubt it. There are too many examples that have worked in too many ways for this point to be in dispute. Even pulp novels have caused us to define our times in fresh terms. Novels give us the experiences of immigrants, refugees and other cultures and open our eyes; help us understand how inglorious wars are; how to find connection in times of alienation. Through novels, oppression, submission and the tyranny of utopia are brought home to us … [we’ve been able to] redefine heroism and be uplifted and inspired to live better, more loving lives’. “That’s just for starters,” says Maass. If that’s for starters, it’s truly enough for a list of ways art is vital. It’s number 1 and would be, I’d say, the most covetable gift.
