Finns Recreation Club Throws Open its Doors to Food & Fun

If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you! Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.

you free to watch on the multiple screens in the Sports Bar. The air con is indeed inviting and the beers are icy! With the NRL State of Origin series just around the corner and Grand Final season fast approaching, The Sports Bar at Finns Recreation Club is your best bet for fuss free viewing.

Chances are, if you’ve ever found yourself in the ‘Gu’, you’re sure to have sailed past Bali’s premier sporting and entertainment venue - The Canggu Club. Originally designed to provide a haven for the island’s expat community with access on a strictly members only basis, The Canggu Club has undergone numerous changes over the years and now perhaps its most exciting development to date! This sprawling, colonial style estate set on over four hectares in Bali’s latest hotspot is about to become a whole lot more accessible and everyone’s invited! Starting with a change of label, the newly named, Finns Recreation Club is throwing open its doors for more to enjoy. The turnstiles at reception will be no longer and everyone is welcome to step inside this cool and comfortable oasis to dine, drink, stay and play! Now there’s no denying Canggu is a gold mine for food aficionados and the choice of dining options is indeed overwhelming, however finding somewhere that not only satiates an appetite for gourmet delights as well as a thirst for adrenalin charged entertainment is definitely a bonus. Finns Recreation Club is a one stop shop for the whole family unit with all ages attractions the likes of Splash Water Park,

Strike Bowling, Cubby House Kids Club and Bounce Indoor Trampoline Centre merely a complimentary golf buggy ride away! No longer will a day pass be required to take advantage of this haven from the heat and heaving traffic to sit down to a meal, take a meeting or sip a Mojito or three! Bistro C is open to the public from 7am daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner with the Smoke House menu offers a tantalising array of tasty choices after 5pm! Make the most of Finns Recreation Club’s fully fenced and secure field - (a rare thing to find on this island!) and let the kids run free with a football or frisbee for a few hours while you savour an opportunity to relax and imbibe, feed your tribe or sneak off down to the Body Temple Spa for a little ‘me time’ or a visit to Toni and Guy Essentials Salon for a new do. Need a little beach time too? Finns offer a free shuttle bus between the Recreation Club and Finns Beach Club, so you can make the most of both venues without even having to reach for your car keys! Footy fanatics and sports zealots need look no further for a place to view their favourite fixtures, grand slam matches or weekly football games either. If it’s televised, they’ll have it for

As Finns Recreation Club retains its status as a members’ club, access to the fitness centre, pools locker rooms and Splash remain as a ‘user pays’ option and features for members to enjoy, however there are a whole host of new casual (and long term) membership choices now available, giving everybody the opportunity to tailor a plan to suit their preferences. Why waste time getting stuck in traffic and sacrificing your sanity when you could already be settled in at Finns Recreation Club with your feet up for the day as the family finds endless ways to entertain themselves! Pop in and see what all the fuss is about and you’ll soon find out why Finns Recreation Club is about to become the number one attraction in the ‘Gu’. Ladies! July is the Time to Dive with Aquamarine Diving July is the time to swap those heels for fins girls! Just imagine, an entire month dedicated to celebrating women and their passion for the ocean and diving! AquaMarine Diving - Bali hopes this offer will help strengthen and support female divers across the globe on this internationally recognised day (and for the month of July) as well as those who choose to join them to dive in Bali.

Inspired by the 3rd Annual PADI Women Dive Day on 15th July 2017, AquaMarine Diving - Bali is offering a 20% discount on published prices for their female guests plus an AMD-B Goodie Bag throughout the entire month of July! This special offer includes all snorkelling, the one day Introductory Adventure Diving Programme, and PADI Courses, as well as (for certified divers) fun diving on day trips and safaris (diving and accommodation packages).

Diving is about community, meeting new people, sharing experiences and exploring the ocean. This special promotion is open to all levels of divers and whether you are certified or not, there is something on offer for everyone. According to PADI globally there is still a gap between the balance of male divers (63.9 percent) and female divers (36.1 percent) so ladies, here’s your chance to expand the female dive community and get involved. If you wish to take advantage of this superb offer, keep in mind that by mid-July the Mola-Mola (Ocean sunfish) Season will be in full swing, so why not benefit from our super discount and join in the excitement of a Mola-Mola Spotting Trip in July. How’s that for perfect timing! Mola-Mola are the world’s heaviest bony fish, weighing up to a massive 1,000kg, and can produce 300 million eggs. Their

two long dorsal fins mean Mola-Mola can be 3.5m in height but, because they have rounded bodies, they are very narrow when seen from front or back - truly a magnificent and unparalleled spectacle to behold. Despite their size, Mola-Mola are actually fairly difficult to locate! Therefore, every day during the “season”, between one and three of AquaMarine’s custom-made dive boats, along with fully trained dive guides head out to look for them. AquaMarine’s team have learned to be very secretive about where they find them! Funnily enough, Mola-Mola have something in common with many of AMD-B’s female guests, they love to sunbathe! These aptly named Sunfish spend up to half of their day basking in the warm sun rays near the surface of the ocean. This helps warm their bodies up after deep dives - clever creatures! If you’d like to spot a Sunfish and experience a trip like no other, join AMD-B for their Women Divers July Special and become a mermaid for the day with AquaMarine Diving – Bali . AquaMarine Diving - Bali is located on Jl. Petitenget 2A in Seminyak. To join them for a Day Dive Trip, Snorkelling, sign up for a PADI Course, or just have a chat, stop by their office or contact them at info@AquaMarineDiving.com

*Security warning. Employ only qualified and professionally trained Satpam (security guards or night watchman) and not thugs to guard your premises. Satpam should have completed the proper training; hold certification and wear the proper uniform. *Put in contacts on your mobile or post in large type on the wall the mobile numbers of village police (BIMAS), village security head (Kepala Pecalang), closest police station (POLSEK), village chief (Lurah or Perbekel), head of the banjar (Klian Adat), city kampung headman (Kepala Dusun) and nearby neighbors. *Dial 110 to get in touch with Central Command Centre. *Energy savers. Don’t believe people when they say it takes more energy to turn a light bulb off and on than it does just leaving it on; no matter what kind of bulb, it saves energy and money to turn off lights whenever possible. *LED bulbs last 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs and lower lighting bills by 70%. *Drying your hands on a cloth towel after washing rather than using a section of paper towel helps both the environment and your bank account. *Heating water for tea or ramen noodles with a heating kettle takes 2 minutes and is 81% efficient compared to stove top (30%) or microwave (47%). *Tons of sustainable living, tech, transportation & energy saving tips on www.treehugger.com. *Food lovers. Considering the limited availability of decent affordable wine on Bali, go with Plaga, which is quite drinkable for the money. *Get the coffee you pay for at coffee retailers (Agen Kopi): Regular Bali Coffee (Kopi Bali) costs Rp35,000-Rp40,000, while pure Bali Coffee (Kopi Murni) costs Rp60,000 and is darker and smells stronger. *Husk the skin of garlic in 15 seconds by placing it in a closed glass jar and shaking up and down vigorously. *Bintang beer is cheaper by the crate (12 large bottles or 24 small) at Hardy’s, Carrefour and Bintang Supermarket or at a beverage wholesaler, costing only Rp360,000 if you give them a crate of empty bottles. *Avoid onion crying by either using a very sharp knife, blowing the released sulfur gas away with an electric fan, putting the onion in the freezer for 10 minutes before cutting, cutting on a board under a stream of cold water or cutting as close as you can to a candle. *Flatten meat, sauces, cookie dough and thick stews into paddies and put inside plastic bags before freezing to make the food easier to stack, freeze faster and thaw quicker. *Find out if an egg is rotten by putting it in a bowl of water. If it sinks, it’s OK to eat. If it’s rotten, it will float. *Avoid stringy parts and mushing on the first bite by peeling a banana from the top end and not from the bottom stem; this way the stem can also be used as a handle. *Be Prepared! *As almost all of Bali’s Javanese pemudik will be departing en mass for their home villages during Idul Fitri, get all your important work done before the this extended holiday period. The peak in travel is expected to occur on 23Jun17. Do plumbing and well repairs, pickup clothes made in the pasar by your Muslim tailor and drop the motorcycle’s damaged front fender off at a body shop. Stock up your larder to prepare for the imminent exodus which will result in inventories of fresh foods declining drastically. Pickup enough tahu (tofu) and tempeh (fermented bean curd) to last 10-12 days. Bali’s airport opens travelers’ aid stations (Posko Mudik Lebaran) to prepare for the onslaught to help those going home or coming to Bali for rest and recreation. Airlines flying in and out of Bali have prepared 50,896 additional seats on 369 extra flights to serve the increased demand. On the plus side, there will be a very appreciable reduction in traffic on Bali’s streets and roads.

*On the road. AirIndonesia X, a joint venture of Malaysian long haul low-fare airline AirAsia X and Indonesia AirAsia, is the first airline to offer low-cost daily flights between Bali and Tokyo. *Avoid inflated hotel room service prices (that include delivery charges and tips) by going down to the restaurant yourself, placing an order and taking the food back to your room yourself. *When driving, coast to a stop instead of braking to save gas and brake wear. *Always wear closed toe shoes when driving a motorbike on Bali. *Eager for your patronage, a jeweler, tailor, fashion shop, restaurant or hotel with often be willing to send a motorcycle or car with driver to pick you up. *Car rooftop storage containers reduce km per hour by 8% in city, 25% on highway while rear mounted cargo boxes boast 2% efficiency in city, 5% on highway. *Ask directions only from delivery van drivers or from men sitting or standing near a cluster of motorbikes. *If only using a/c when driving over 60 kph, less fuel is consumed running the a/c. *Tip a taxi driver by rounding off the fare, i.e. if it’s Rp17,500, give Rp20,000; a tip for a rented car driver should be around Rp50,000. *Because idling burns 2 to 4 liters of gas per hour, shut off engine if stopped for more than 10 seconds. *Driving with underinflated tires can cost hundreds of thousands of extra rupiah each year.

Break the satellite dish habit by buying a good flat screen and then getting your TV from the Internet. View Indonesian television programming (with some English-language programs) on a computer, tablet or smartphone. The best is the made-in-Bali easy-to-install VHF-UHF TV antenna for only Rp85,000. *Online TV Guide: www.tvguide.co.id. *Capital One credit cards charge no foreign transaction fees, no balance transfer fees, no annual fees and have good exchange rates and theft protection. *Every price for every product and service is arbitrary and made up. * KUHP. Disconnect to Connect with You Have you been feeling really tired and you don’t know why? Are you doing all the right things like exercising, eating right and getting at least eight hours of sleep most nights? Maybe you have a busy life, but you’ve always been busy in the past, but never felt so worn out like you do now. So what’s going on? Why can’t you seem to get your Mojo back? Me, like most of you who are reading this column have something in common – we are all ‘plugged in’ nearly 24 hours a day to technology. Our phones have internet packets (I stopped this awhile ago) with many apps like Messenger, Facebook, Skype and WhatsApp. These apps make life easier in many ways, as we can quickly connect with our friends, colleagues, etc. within seconds. I’m all about having greater ease in my life. WhatsApp even has this handy feature that allows you to record your messages so that you don’t even have to type them. How cool is that? At first this all seemed wonderful. I had the world at my fingertips, easily messaging my clients and sending them a pin to my location. I could even send a client their hypnosis recording or important information within seconds from my phone. I was sure this would make my life easier and I could actually save time. No more emails. Yeah! All of these wonderful benefits I’ve just described are certainly true, but what I didn’t know then was how slowly my energy would be drained by constantly being ‘online’. This addiction is very subtle as it creeps into our lives like a thief sneaking into your home in the dark. You can’t see him, but you know he’s there. My husband who was never connected to technology is now glued to his phone as soon as he gets home. He is checking his Facebook looking for the latest news and updates from friends. This man who I love dearly has caught this illness which is so contagious – the need to be connected to the worldwide web is just too intoxicating to resist. I know because I have been seduced too. I am not immune to this illness; I could easily totally surrender to it if I let myself, but today something inside of me said, “No more! Enough is enough, Michele. You’ve got to end this madness.” What was it exactly that pushed me to take action today? Why not yesterday or the day before? I think it’s been a long time coming. I kept getting so many WhatsApp messages from clients and friends every day at all hours of the day and night. I started having difficulty sleeping. Yes, I do turn off my WiFi at night, but I still felt connected somehow. All the people out there who I know on Facebook, contacts in my WhatsApp, Skype contacts, etc, were energetically connected to me as I to them. It is no one’s fault; often we are unconscious of how we can create cords with other people which tap into that person’s energy. This is a consequence of the work that I do. I have so many people who I see on a regular basis, that it’s not surprising that I have cords with some of these people. When I become aware of this, I usually just cut the cord which helps a great deal. What I hadn’t realized is that technology is like a giant spider web of the collective consciousness that is continuously weaving together everyone’s consciousness. We are so tapped into each other, that we no longer have enough time and space to connect with ourselves. Many people have even forgotten how to do this. This problem has exponentially increased to such a magnitude that millions of people are experiencing symptoms such as depression, extreme tiredness, difficulty sleeping, anxiety and many other ailments.

The irony here is that I often facilitate healing for other people who are exhausted and in overwhelm. I didn’t fully realize until today how much technology was taking its toll on me. I started getting WhatsApp messages at all hours of the night from clients who needed my help. It was hard for me to ignore these messages, because once you read them they remain in your consciousness. I also tried turning off the notifications in my settings, but then when I turned them on again there were many messages waiting for me. I could feel my energy draining away as I was now giving my time to clients in private sessions and on whatsApp which meant I was on call 24/7. This was not the reality I wanted for my life. I had unknowingly fed this monster by enthusiastically using WhatsApp as a time saver. Now it had become an energy drain as each morning I struggled to get out of bed and every night I struggled again to fall asleep. I was trapped in a vicious cycle which I saw no way out of until today. I finally made a choice to disconnect, partially at least. I didn’t know that you could send a video on WhatsApp about your status, but today I discovered this feature and sent all my contacts a video telling them that I’m getting off WhatsApp. I was honest and shared that it was draining me and that I needed to disconnect. I know it won’t be so convenient for people to contact me the old fashioned way and vice versa. Perhaps a few of my friends or clients will be disappointed or even annoyed by my choice to get off WhatsApp and that’s totally fine. All I can say is that I feel a deep sense of ease and relief to know that people can’t just jump on to WhatsApp and send me a message whenever they feel like it. I can already feel my energy increasing and a lightness of being that I haven’t felt in a long time. Everyone reading this I’d like to know what’s draining you in your life? If you could disconnect from one thing to create a difference in your energy and wellbeing, what would that be? I dare you to do it and then email me after one week to let me know how you’re feeling as a result of your action.

14 Diagnostics: Singapore vs. Hong Kong Lion City clear winner by cost & expertise A good annual check-up is common sense at any age. Over 40 you’d be a fool not to, and at my age you almost deserve anything you get if you don’t. That said, do I follow my own advise? Foolishly I do not. I’d lay odds that I’m not alone in this, particularly here in Bali where a relaxed attitude to such things is not unusual among foreign residents and local diagnostics hardly cutting edge. My wife, who has way more than her fair share of health challenges, needed a simple procedure, that normally requires an overnight hospital stay, and a check-up. She insisted that I have a one too. We went to Singapore and stayed three nights going to Raffles Hospital on North Bridge Road, next door to the Bugis Junction, for the medical. I have to say I was impressed both with the hospital and the attention we received. First the hospital itself was pleasant, light and well-appointed. The staff were well-informed, helpful and went about their business with calm confidence. Compare that with the stress, crowded waiting rooms you find in most large practices in the US. Better yet, the cost of it all was a fraction of what we were used to paying in America or Hong Kong. We chose the “Deluxe Plus” health screen which clocked in at S$450 (US$280), which with pre and post consultation with a doctor included a chest X-ray and ECG, plus 20 other tests. The other screens offered ranged from S$62 (US$38) for the “Basic” with six lab tests to the “Raffles Platinum” at S$7,880 (US$4,890) with 70 tests, which will give you an idea of how the nomenclature relates to what you get. We reckoned the Deluxe was broad enough to show up anything we’d need to be worried about and good value. We were done in a couple of hours and they even serve you a decent buffet breakfast for gratis while you wait. We were back the following day to review the results with the doctor. Subsequently my wife went back for a minor procedure which normally required an overnight stay. Given the time constraints and cost factors the consulting doctor couldn’t have been more helpful, stretching a point and performing the procedure in clinic rather than in hospital (all in the same building, different floors). “It’s better that way” he said, “minute you step into the hospital the meter really kicks in”. My wife went on to have consultations with two very senior specialists, professors in cardiology and respitory medicine respectively. They were very thorough, took their time and the bill was just S$138 (US$100) per visit. As I say, I was impressed with how it was all handled. It’s not often you can say that a hospital visit was a relaxed, almost pleasant experience. It seems to me that the Singaporeans, along with the French, and possibly the Germans and Scandinavians, have got their act together when it comes to handling their health systems. My perception was that Singapore was an expensive place to be treated and I was, broadly speaking, right. It is, if you aren’t a Singaporean. In which case you, or your insurance, will be paying the full commercial international rate. But, that’s not the case when it comes to diagnostics. Here you pay what any Singaporean would. That seems to me to make sense. It’s good business isn’t it? A medical loss leader you could say. The Singaporean approach to public health is emminently practical and effective, as becomes a nanny state. If you are a rich Singaporean or a foreigner you will get the Rolls Royce treatment with all the trimmings but - will pay through the nose for it. If you are a middle class Singaporean, fewer trimmings but the cost of treatment is heavily subsidised. If you are poor you may well have to wait for treatment, unless it is an emergency, and certainly few trimmings, but

- you will be treated in the same way medically as everyone else and not have to pay for it. The mark of a civilised nation is how it cares for the health of its citizens. There is place for private medicine to be sure, but that place is as a junior partner in a mixed economy. Not running away with a game that is rigged by the pharmaceutical majors, private or quasi ‘non-profit’ hospitals, cliques of lucre-driven doctors and researchers, in a stitch-up with the insurance companies. For profit hospitals should be for those who can afford them or the insurance premiums that allows them to be treated there. Their owners and shareholders cannot reasonably expect to benefit by skewing the market their way by attacking public medicine politically and seeking to privatise it or starve it of funding. Little kudos if any should be given to those engaged in private medicine solely for profit. Let them be satisfied with the money. The honours, if not wealth, that rightly accrue to great doctors should go to those that treat all people equally whatever their station.

Apart from the difference in cost one of the other things I noticed in Singapore that I did not in Hong Kong, at least not to the same degree, was the willingness to provide important information to the patient that can either save or cost a life. The Hippocratic oath tells physicians ”first do no harm”. If you knowingly withold information that could save your patient’s life I’d say that was doing harm. What I saw in Hong Kong at senior levels was a clique-ridden medical closed shop split between UK and US post graduate trained physicians none too happy to collaborate with doctors outside their group, quick to stand on their dignity and who, no matter how good they were as doctors, let money and concern for their standing get in the way of patient well being.

To cite an incidence: I know a woman who has pulmonary and cardiac problems. Test shows that she had mild aortic stenosis. Her cardiologist indicated that there was nothing to worry about just keep a watch on it. Within a year that woman’s aortic stenosis had become so severe that she was advised she required an immediate replacement of the aortic valve at a cost of some US$100,000, failing which she would drown from the liquid accumulated in her lungs. That same woman was also told by her pulmonary specialist that the fluid in her lungs could not be aspirated from the right lung because of its location. It was only when she consulted a cardiologist and pulmonary specialist in Singapore that she was told she needed an immediate aortic valve replacement to survive and that the liquid in her lungs could easily have been removed under CT guidance. How come these very able doctors in Hong Kong did not tell this woman the facts of her situation? Was it because the equipment or the expertise was lacking? In which case it was all about money. She could have gone elsewhere – had she known. My fear is that some very qualified doctors merely manage what becomes the terminal decline of a patient because a life-preserving remedy lies outside their area of competence for one reason or another. Whatever the reason, that’s bad medicine.

HOW TO DRESS A WOUND…PROPERLY When I see the way some wounds are dressed here it makes me shudder. It wasn’t long ago that the only dressing available here was a roll of gauze and a bottle of bright red mercurochrome. Thankfully the mercurochrome is off the shelves. As the name suggests it does contain mercury and this is why many countries banned the antiseptic solution. Even today I see open wounds dressed with gauze, that adheres to the lesion, ripping the wound open every time the dressing is changed….ouch! Even some supposedly reputable clinics have no idea how to dress a wound in such a way to promote maximal healing. Another common mistake is to bomb the wound with every antiseptic under the sun. Everything from undiluted dettol, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, betadine etc etc. Basically all this does is burn the tissue and kill off any cells that are attempting to heal. The best way to clean and flush a fresh wound is with sterile water (aqua), saline (sterile salty water if you have it), or if the wound is dirty, a tablespoon of betadine in a bottle of aqua will do the trick. You can pat the wound try with sterile gauze (kassa sterile). If there is a need for antibiotic cream Fucidin or Bactroban are the best. HOW TO DRESS A WOUND Sterile gauze (Kassa Sterile) - Gauze should never be applied and left directly on the wound. This is used

non-stick dressings already have an adhesive. These only need to be changed once a day, usually after a shower as they are not waterproof. They come in a variety of sizes so choose the one most suited to your wound. Sofra-Tulle - This oily gauze has an antibiotic cream already applied. This is ideal for burns, or burn-like wounds where the top layers of skin have been injured (gravel injuries following a bike accident for example). Personally I would only change the Sofra-Tulle once every 3 days or so, depending on the condition of the dressing and the wound. Plain sterile gauze can be used behind the dressing to soak up any ooze, and can be changed as often as necessary. When you need to change the dressing you may need to moisten the pad with sterile water so as it comes away easily. Opsite - Opsite is a clear thin plastic dressing that is generally used after surgery but can also be used on neat wounds that do not have a lot of ooze. The beauty of these is that they are waterproof and you will be able to shower. As this dressing should only be used for clean, neat wounds they only need to be changed every 3 days or less, depending on the amount of ooze.

for cleaning wounds or to pad the dressing out is there is any oozing. If this is used as a contact dressing it will take off the top layer of healing tissues when it is removed.

DuoDERM - DuoDerm dressing pads and gel are magic for wounds that have a lot of ooze, such as ulcers or wide lesions that are not joined neatly.

If this has been used and you are having difficulty removing the dressing, moisten the gauze with sterile water (aqua is sterile) then remove the dressing.

The pad or gel will soak up the ooze and basically hold on to it until the next dressing change. It saves a lot of mess and really does improve healing time.

Non Stick Dressing Pads - If the wound is closed and the edges of the wound close together, a non-stick dressing can be applied and adhered with dressing tape (Ultrafix). Some

Steri-Strips or Butterfly closures - These are basically strips of sticky fabric that you can use to pull the edges of a wound together. Be aware that these can only be used if the

cut is only a few layers of skin deep. If the cut is deep or gaping it will need stitches. These will need to be left in place for at least 3 days for the edges of the skin to join back together. The problem with these is that in warm climates they tend to come adrift due to perspiration. A good tip is to apply a drop of super glue to the strip either side of the wound. (Not to used in the eye area). Super glue actually has the same formula as medical glue and is much cheaper. In my clinic I would also apply Friars Balsam around the wound which is a sticky resin like solution, however is difficult to find here. HAIR - Yes hair! Here is a good tip for all you mums & dads who might have to deal with deep cuts on the scalp. You can actually tie the wound together with strands of hair from either side of the cut. Make sure you flush out the wound first to check how deep it really is. It may need real stitches. Also if there has been a decent blow to the head, you may need observation for head injury. I hope this has given you all some good tips on home care for your family. All the above dressings, and creams are available here at your local pharmacy (I like Kimia Farma), except for the SteriStrips & Butterfly closures.

Expat Recruitment Bali Style By Ines Wynn With strict laws governing expat employment and the expensive work permit process it involves, getting a job in Bali or Indonesia is fraught with challenges. Yet, many expats find gainful employment, some legally, some not. How do they go about it? There are a few recruitment agencies with dream job postings and a mission to help qualified candidates navigate the choppy waters. There is also a sort of underground network that may steer the hopefuls to a successful ending. What advice do they have for the novice or jaded job seeker?

First the rules - To work legally in Bali, one absolutely must have a work permit, called IMTA (Ijin Mempekerjakan Tenaga Kerja Asing). It is not always easy to understand the work permit rules as they are frequently changing. It is a long and complex process and it usually takes about 2 months to obtain the coveted document. It is also expensive at roughly 8 to 10 million IDR for the initial IMTA, in addition to the $100 per month government tax, which has to be paid in advance. It also requires biannual (every 6-months) or yearly renewals, depending on the type of industry or job. But to get that coveted permit you absolutely need employer sponsorship, a process which recalls the chicken before the egg type thing. This implies your prospective employer must agree to sponsor you for the job and pay the stipulated fees. Sponsorship entails a bureaucratic paper mill for the employer which means that few small companies will want to bother if Indonesian candidates are a viable alternative. A work permit can only be initiated by the prospective employer and it must be a legal business entity that is allowed to hire a foreigner. Bear in mind that if you obtained a residence permit (KITAS) due to being married to an Indonesian partner, you are not allowed to work. Neither can you work if you have a Retirement KITAS. Let alone on a regular tourist or social visa.

proper permits and you don’t have to worry about it.

The Big recruitment agencies - There are a just a few visible and serious official employment recruiters in Bali and they are anxious to toe the rules. Dietrich De Roeck from Global Expat Recruiting, an agency dealing primarily with upper echelon jobs in the hospitality sector for 4 or 5 star properties, says he is very careful to check applicants’ work status and does some background checking, especially reference checks. He relies a lot on supplied references and mentions there is a definite code of conduct to extract meaningful and truthful information from referees. Though references given by the job seeker can be very selective, there is a good chance that, if the candidate has a checkered background or has been involved in petty crime, it will come out one way or another.

Global Expat uses an online registration form which, reflecting Indonesian norms, does request discretionary information like date of birth, gender, marital status and religion which would be totally absent from western application forms. The reasons are that prospective employers are often very adamant about finding the “right” candidate. Professionals with a pedigree CV and rich experience stand less of a chance if over 50 years old as often employers opt to hire “less senior” employees. Dietrich adds that the hospitality industry is less discriminating, probably because the major hotel chains he recruits for are mostly foreign-owned and as a rule, follow the conventions of their mother countries. Stick to large multi-national companies. You stand a better chance they will sponsor you.

The unofficial network – Due to the high cost and frustrating bureaucracy of work permit rules some small businesses like shops, spas, salons may try to hire temporary workers ‘under the table”. Word of these “opportunities” usually comes down via the rumour mill, more politely termed the connective network. Expat forums sometimes include these requests. However, beware of these false opportunities. These jobs are not worth the risk of deportation. They are illegal if you have no sponsored work permit and there are too many stool pigeons and informants who will gladly report you to the authorities for the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes or a chance to cosy up to “power”. Word to mouth information of plum jobs is only reserved for the legal applicants. Due to much tighter scrutiny of foreigners, ad rem controls are often practiced and raids are all too frequent. If you get caught in the dragnet, the only way out is paying a hefty fine and possibly deportation. Don’t flaunt the rules.

Another major Bali recruiter is Concord Services which deals with a lot of positions in the general business sector and does not specialise in any particular industry. They do however offer tailored consulting services for people wishing to set up PTPMAs and can shepherd you through the application process for all types of visas.

A third option is to apply for a Business visa which represents less hassle and less red tape though you must understand that this type of visa does not allow a foreigner to work except in an advisory or consulting capacity to an existing company licensed to do business in Indonesia. The downside is the limited 2-month validity, after which you can apply for up to 4 monthly extensions; in total 6 months.

There are also a slew of online recruitment agencies in Indonesia according to Google and they are mostly based in Java. It’s worth checking out as they also list Bali jobs.

On the other hand, if you are a teacher with bona fide credentials you can apply directly to the schools. Many schools will sponsor you; in fact, they place regular ads in Bali publications. So do real estate companies and hotels. Normally these places of employment will take care of all the

On the other side of that, expats with specific skills that are not readily available here will find an easier time. Language skills, especially Mandarin, Russian, Japanese are sought after. There are also many festivals, events and happening with temporary jobs that are available.

Established in 2008, Global Expat is focused on senior recruitment for the Asia Pacific hospitality industry and has offices in Bali and Vietnam. The agency works in partnership with many clients and offers a highly specialised style of personal service. Dietrich and his team are experts in the recruitment of upper strata/executive level candidates like hotel managers, executive chefs, F&B managers, sales directors and corporate executives for employers who are able to sponsor work permits for suitable foreign candidates.

If you want to establish your own business you can set up a PT-PMA (Perseroan Terbatas -Penanaman Modal Asing) which is considered a foreign investment company and which allows foreign ownership and foreign partnership. Some categories allow a 100% share in particular lines of trade; others up to maximum 49% in the case of a service company. Setting up a PT-PMA is not for the fainthearted and, yes, very expensive. It needs to be done correctly following all the documentation and procedures needed with forming a company in Indonesia. Setting up a PMA involves a partnership where one or more of the shareholders are foreigners or a foreign entity and at least 2 Indonesian shareholders. Another option is to establish a local PT (PT Swasta National). This is a Limited Liability Company which is 100% Indonesianowned and cannot issue shares to foreigners. A Local PT functions under a nominee structure where the Indonesian owner is the nominee and the foreigner is considered an employee.

The business visa is unfortunately a very “grey” area. Theoretically, a business visa is used for business trips, short courses, seminars, trainings, and meetings. Immigration officials still make decisions at their own discretion and might or might not let free lancers like Yoga teachers, DJs, musicians, use a business visa. Keep this in mind if you are thinking of setting yourself up as an independent or free-lance worker.

have to adapt to the local culture and not the other way around. An expat executive chef who waltzes around the kitchen in Gordon Ramsey style is apt to find that he or she will be shown the backdoor very quickly if s/he cannot work with the local staff in the patient and courteous manner this environment requires.

Other contenders - Key Hospitality Solutions is a smaller agency which also zeroes into the hospitality sector. What sets them apart is that they provide training services such as HACCP (Food Safety Management System) and various food & beverage service and management consulting services. Another recruiter, Seed Plus Global is the new kid on the block. It has an office in Bali and offers many lower echelon positions.

Professional and Cultural challenges - But one thing stands out, in order to find a reasonably lucrative job in Bali as an expat, you must have a good skill set, lots of experience, and be relatively young, ideally under 40. Though expats have typically commanded higher salaries, their Indonesian counterparts are fast gaining the same advantages. Given the same skill sets and experience, they may even be in direct competition with expats due to the employer not having to fork out a housing allowance, international health insurance, work permit costs, etc. In addition, due to the current hotel crunch, Indonesians now have better chances than ever, especially if they have foreign degrees or can boast good foreign experience. Expats also have to keep in mind that it is paramount they

If you have a LinkedIn account, don’t underestimate the value of this professional network. Jobs are often posted and references and links can lead to legitimate work. It does take some time to establish a presence and get noted but the LinkedIn tentacles reach far and wide. Take advantage of it. A good rule of thumb is to be socially or professionally visible and get to know key players in your field. On the lighter side - Recruiters sometimes encounter unusual or amusing experiences. Global Expat’s director Dietrich recalls a funny story where a working GM applied for his own job, not realizing his manager was about to fire him and had posted a confidential job ad for his replacement with a recruiter. That recruiters sometimes stand in the firing line is sometimes an unavoidable part of their job. One particular GM had been officially hired and was ready to take up his new post when the previous disgruntled employer came on the scene and imparted some damaging and, as it turned out, false information attempting to sabotage the process. As with everything else in life, it’s a buyer beware world. The Intestines of the Soil ‘Dear Garden Doctor, I have no worms in my garden soil. I just started my first compost pile, my friend tells me it won’t work as I don’t have worms in my garden. I have lived here for 2 years and have rarely seen any. My husband says there won’t be any worms to get into my bin and I should buy some. Do I need worms to start composting and why do people associate worms with good soil? Totti, Bali.’ A r i s t o t l e described worms as ‘the intestines of the soil’ which is essentially what they are. Earthworms slither through the soil, digesting and recycling dead or decomposing organic material back into soil, distributing nutrients and improving the soil structure, recycling nutrients in the process and rendering those nutrients bioavailable for easy uptake by the plants. They also eat living organisms such as nematodes, bacteria and fungi. After organic matter is digested the earthworm releases waste called castings, which are full of nutrients in a form easily absorbed by that plants. It is one of the most primo fertilisers I know of. If you incorporate compost and other organic matter into your garden beds, the worms will be effectively fertilising the garden right there in situ. I see it as a natural fertiliser machine operating underneath your garden beds - surely worms are a gardener’s best friend! But the gift of their work doesn’t stop there. Their constant burrowing aerates and loosens the soil, creating pathways for water and allowing for oxygen exchange with plants roots and other soil organisms. Earthworms improve the soil on so many levels that you really cannot afford to not have them in your garden.

Charles Darwin, the famous evolutionary biologist noted that “It is a marvellous reflection that the whole expanse has passed, and will again pass, every few years through the bodies of worms. The plough is one of the most ancient and most valuable of man’s inventions; but long before he existed the land was in fact regularly ploughed, and still continues to be thus ploughed, by earthworms. It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world as these lowly organised creatures.’ - The formation of vegetable mould, through the action of worms, with observations on their habits (1881).” So now we know why worms are so good for the garden, all that’s left to do is attract them, which is a simple case of …… if you build it, they will come!

worms having little to do but eat, they will shift a large amount of material in a short space of time. Finished compost can be added directly onto the garden beds or gently forked in. It can be top dressed over the lawn and sprinkled around pot plants. One other thing worth adding is to avoid doing things that will harm worms. Residue from toxic chemicals found in weed sprays and pesticides will have detrimental effects on the organisms living in your soil. It would be hard to live somewhere that the soil is literally killing you. Try to do your weeding by hand and regularly mulch the garden with organic material. The benefits of mulching are two-fold, you are stopping weeds without using poison and you are also improving the soil through nutrient cycling organic material back through it. Spraying poison around the garden should be the option of last resort and avoided if possible. As your soil improves over time and with regular additions of organic matter and compost you should begin to find plenty of worms taking up residence on your garden. Using compost and worms are the most efficient methods to develop a self-sustaining garden. The benefits of nutrient cycling organic materials through your garden is good for your garden and the whole environment. You will notice your rubbish bins won’t be as full as now you’re composting kitchen scraps and less space will be wasted in landfill rubbish tips. Soon enough you may find that you are able reduce or do away with chemical fertilisers altogether and rely on solely sustainable organic methods.

Adding organic matter to the soil will attract the worms. With a consistent food source the worms will breed like mad. If starting a fresh batch of compost it may take several months before you notice the worm population arrive and then start to increase. If composting in a bin, make sure the base is open and in contact with soil, this is crucial as it will allow the composting critters easy entry inside to do their work. Worms especially like shredded leaves, Lucerne hay, sugarcane mulch or shredded paper mulch inside the compost. The best tip to keeping them happy is to feed them with compost and spread mulch around the garden and don’t dig too much - research has shown that the more soil is rototilled, the As for the lack of worms in the garden and compost, just fewer the worms in it. remember….. To efficiently compost, always make sure that the pile is kept If you build it, they will come! moist. For compost in a bin, take the lid off when it is raining and let nature do the work of watering the heap. Make sure to balance the compost with layers of differing materials. If composting kitchen scraps, create layers with dry materials such as leaf mulch and garden clippings. Think of your compost as if you’re making a big healthy sandwich for your garden, which is literally what you are doing by the way. Making the healthy ‘compost sandwich’ is just like making a real one, Dr. Kris built up from the bottom with different layers of various organic Garden Doctor Contact: dr.kris@ymail.com ingredients.

Stir in the pistachios. Butter a cookie sheet with a lip and pour two equal parallel loaves the length of the cookie sheet. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 - 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the dough comes out clean. After about 20 minutes, cut the loaves into 1 -1.5 cm wide strips across the loaf. Place these back on the cookie sheet and return to the oven to toast for 10 minutes. This is what gives the biscotti the crispness and makes them good to dunk in coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. Let these cool completely. If you prefer softer biscotti toast for less time. Melt the chocolate in the top of a double boiler. Using a knife spread the melted chocolate on the tops of all the biscotti. If the chocolate does not harden once on the biscotti put them in the freezer for a few minutes until hard then let them come to room temperature before storing the biscotti in an airtight container. Note: Sometimes the dough spreads out too thin in the oven. I found a square baking pan, 25 x 25 cm, in Tiara Dewata that has two dividers giving me three troughs to put the dough in. This makes shorter biscotti. To make the oat flour, grind rolled oats in a coffee or spice mill or in a food processor. You can use whole wheat or white flour for any portion of the other flours.

Sri won the Bali Tourism Ambassador award in 2006. Sri has worked as a sales executive, translator and interpreter, freelance real estate broker, recruiter in an employment agency and as a secretary in an adventure company, but the issue that she always has been most passionate about are economic equality and social justice. Her role as a mediator has exposed her to many labor issues that receive little public attention. Sri now juggles between making a name for herself in community empowerment issues and working as a freelance headhunter at Bali Top Jobs.

What is Bali Top Job all about?

Do daily workers sign contracts? When daily workers work in construction for a short period of time, they often do not sign a written agreement. However, if they work in a hotel, villa or restaurant, they will likely sign one.

What violations experienced by daily workers have been reported to you? Many daily workers are employed 30 days within 3 consecutive months and are even given a fixed term contract for 3 years when they should be only working 20 days a month. Many daily workers only receive the regional UMK (Minimum Monthly Wage) when they are in fact entitled to additional hourly pay as compensation for employment insecurity and lack of paid leave. This addition to their hourly pay rate is a substitute for perks that only permanent staff get. Many also report that their employers demand that they work 9-12 hour days without any overtime pay.

Why don’t daily workers have more rights in Bali? Hotel department managers have told me that the need for jobs is still far greater than available vacancies, which makes daily workers dispensable. Some permanent workers themselves believe that starting as a daily worker is a good career move that fresh graduates or new workers need to prove their competence before they are hired as a permanent staff. Some company owners admitted that the main purpose for using daily workers is to reduce steep costs of benefits mandated to permanent staff by manpower regulations. Since the hospitality industry in Bali is a cutthroat business and hotels in Bali are oversupplied with workers, they cannot afford to give equal perks to daily workers. On the other hand, there are many cases in which a daily worker’s skills, competence and job performance are considered below standard and yet they still want quick promotions.

What challenges do daily workers face? Many workers have a low level of education, which makes them eligible for only low skilled jobs. With the oversupply of hotels in Bali, the competition for jobs has become intense. Local workers have to compete with immigrants who sometimes accept lower wages, foreigners who work illegally and candidates who get a job due to nepotism. It has also been reported that there has been a decrease in

If You Have a Problem with.....

Is Bali’s monthly minimum wage of Rp1.9 million enough to live on? It depends. Some family breadwinners only get the Rp1,9 million without tips. But some receive even less than that. Some stay in a small rented room with 3-4 other people while paying for their motorbike on credit and sending a portion of their income to their elderly parents in their village, so of course that amount is too low to live on. However, permanent staff that work in hotels, villas and restaurants receive service charge, lunch and tips every month over and above their wages. Many who work in spas doing massage, hairdressing, manicures and pedicures receive a 5% - 10% commission. Their lower salary is expected to translate into a higher drive and motivation to sell. In these cases the amount they receive is not always fixed. Another cushioning factor is that there are many Balinese who still live with their parents. This arrangement reduces their living costs and the need to be concerned about paying their rent. Many Balinese males also receive inheritances.

WOODEN BLINDS

25mm, 35mm & 50mm

What can daily workers do if their employer breaks labor laws? Workers can report directly to the manpower department or ask for legal assistance to LBH Bali, which is Bali’s Legal Aid Foundation. Unfortunately, many are reluctant to report violations. They fear that their grievances will be ignored or that they will lose their case because the employer will pay a bribe and get away with it. Many are not members of a worker’s union and therefore cannot always expect legal assistance and protection.

Can you give some advice for those starting out in Bali’s tourism industry? First, improve your English. Most job candidates studied at school with local teachers who use poor grammar and don’t speak English very well. Be aware of your rights and regulations before signing a contract. Network among your friends instead of relying on traditional approaches to finding a job. I have found that sending out resumes does not work nearly as well in landing a job than attending an event, mingling and talking directly and confidently with decision makers. Finally, travel to learn how it feels to be a tourist. Don’t limit yourself by only visiting developed countries but also visit less developed ones to see how it feels being ripped off only because you are a tourist. This way you learn compassion towards travelers who visit Bali.

A typical daily worker in Indonesia is employed on an 8-hour basis but works less than 21 days a month. He or she is called only when needed. They are a critical part of the workforce in hotels, villas and restaurants in the high season. This kind of work also means occasional, irregular employment. Many have worked for years with similar responsibilities given to permanent staff, yet they do not receive paid sick leave, annual leave or maternity leave. They are also are not entitled to health insurance, social security, severance pay, mandated religious allowance, etc. Employers can end employment without notice unless notice is required by a prior agreement in an employment contract.

service charges, which means that many permanent staff in hotels do not want to share their tips with long-term daily workers. They also have to compete with some full time staff with stagnant or declining work performance but who cannot be easily fired by companies, even if they are proven incompetent.

31 Kennel Cough in Dogs! Canine infectious diseases are rife in Bali, partly due to the huge ‘reservoir’ of infection that is the stray dog population and partly due to low levels of vaccination and preventative vet care among pet owners comparative to Western countries.

of an anti-inflammatory drug such as carprofen to soother the inflamed mucosa of the trachea.

One of the most common infectious diseases we see at Sunset Vet is Kennel Cough (also known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis). Kennel Cough is an umbrella term for upper respiratory infection and can have multiple causes, the most common being the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica (found in around 80% cases), followed by canine parainfluenza virus (around 40% cases), and to a lesser degree canine coronavirus (10% cases). Kennel Cough is highly contagious, but once a dog has had it immunity develops quickly to that strain although the dog remains susceptible to other strains.

What happens if I don’t bring to the vet or give any treatment?

Like many respiratory viruses, infection is spread through inhalation of airborne droplets produced by sneezing or coughing, and through contact with contaminated surfaces. Symptoms begin after an incubation period of a few days, and in most cases will clear up on their own. However, in young puppies or dogs with weak immune systems, mixed or secondary infections can progress to lower respiratory infections such as pneumonia.

How can I tell if my dog has kennel cough? Your dog will develop a dry, hacking cough that almost sounds like he/she is retching (trying to be sick). Sometimes a cough can cause the dog to vomit, which can cause diagnostic confusion if the owner then brings the dog to their vet and reports ‘my dog is vomiting’. Another common phrase reported by owners is ‘I think my dog has something stuck in his/her throat’.

But how did my dog catch it? Usually by close contact with another dog who is coughing – just like the flu in humans. Kennel Cough has an incubation period of 5–7 days (but with a range of 3–10). Sniffing another dog with kennel cough at the beach can be enough to transmit the disease, but often it is caught from contact with other dogs in boarding kennels or vet clinics.

My dog caught kennel cough while at the vet clinic – why should I have to pay for treatment when my dog caught it at the clinic? This is a common question delivered to many vets around the world! Kennel Cough is airborne and highly contagious. So even with the best hygiene and cleanliness possible, transmission is sometimes unavoidable. A useful metaphor to consider is as follows: imagine you were flying from Singapore to New York with Virgin Atlantic and someone in the adjacent row on the plane was coughing. The following day you get a sore throat, which then progresses to full on flu. Do you angrily email Virgin Atlantic customer service and demand that they pay for your flu medicine, because you got sick on their plane?

For Sale; Asian antiques from all over Asia (Japan, China, Khmer Thai, Indonesia, etc). Cabinet, statue paintings, textile, Buddha statue, etc. Private collection, bought when travelling. No reproduction. Contact 0813 3863 4748. No photos. Kerobokan. [073]

The majority of cases will recover fine in time with no treatment. However, the dog will take much longer to recover compared to a dog given treatment, and therefore during that time is likely to infect more dogs that it comes into contact with. A minority of cases could progress to lower respiratory disease such as pneumonia.

For how long is my dog contagious once he/she stops coughing? This depends on whether the kennel cough is bacterial or viral. Viral infections such as canine parainfluenza or canine coronavirus are only shed for around 1 week following recovery. However, respiratory infections involving the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica can be transmissible for several weeks longer. A dog only completely stops shedding the bacteria around 6 weeks after first exposure – usually long after it has stopped coughing.

Can my dog be vaccinated against Kennel Cough? Yes, there is a kennel cough vaccine and this is available from Sunset Vet. In fact, some boarding kennels in Bali (and most in Western countries) now insist on seeing evidence of kennel cough vaccination before they will accept a dog for boarding. This is understandable as one coughing dog can infect an entire boarding kennel and the cough can spread like wildfire. There are typically 2 vaccines available, one given by subcutaneous injection, the other by intranasal administration. Usually the intranasal one is more difficult to give, as most dogs are not comfortable allowing a vet to squirt a vaccine into their nostril with their head raised! It does however provide rapid mucosal immunity, within a matter of days, so is popular with dogs that need to go into kennels urgently. Immunity from the Kennel Cough vaccine only lasts for a year so the vaccine needs to be repeated annually to maintain protection. It is also important to point out that the kennel cough vaccine is NOT included in the multi-vaccine that your pet is given each year (which protects against other more fatal diseases such as parvo and distemper), it is also separate to the rabies vaccine which is given every 1,2 or 3 years depending on brand.

Are there any adverse effects from the vaccine? Some dogs can have a mild nasal discharge after the kennel cough vaccination. Also around 5% can get a very mild form of kennel cough from the vaccine itself, though this is usually barely noticeable and disappears within a few days.

Unfortunately bringing people or animals into an enclosed space in close proximity to one another will lead to respiratory bacteria/viruses being spread, whether it’s an airplane, vet clinic or farm shed.

What is the treatment for kennel cough? At Sunset Vet we prescribe a course of the antibiotic doxycycline for 10-14 days depending on the severity of the cough. In a particularly bad case (e.g. if the dog has a poor immune system so recovery takes longer, or the kennel cough progresses to a full pneumonia) the antibiotics will be extended for longer or indeed a second type of antibiotic added. We also usually give a single subcutaneous injection

L’Assiette is French and offers ‘home-style’ cooking at its garden restaurant on Jln. Mertanadi, Kerobokan. It is almost a secret but behind the street façade is one of the nicest garden dining areas in Bali. Lunch is lighter cuisine; Terrine de Campagne or a healthy Tabouleh. I was surprised to discover an old English favourite on this French menu, Shepherd’s Pie. However I was told that this was a very Parisienne dish, and one that is often prepared at Christmas or as a birthday special and for other special occasions. Instead of the base being minced lamb [shepherds tend sheep], this French version uses shredded duck conft. Topped with mashed potato and baked in the oven [pictured]. As with all dishes here very good and amazingly budget priced for a quality French restaurant. A lunch special for me is just titled Special of the Chef, meat lovers take note! Quality beef tenderloin is roasted RARE, slices of which are served cold on a board with a small mixed salad, French fries and a pots of mustard. Perfect! A small well priced [only Rp.170,000++] set menu, available for both lunch and dinner, is one that begins with your choice of Egg Cocotte Spring Onion OR a Home-made Terrine, followed by a sorbet then the wonderful Chicken Confit, finishing with the Dessert du Chef. Just try to find a classic 3 course French meal anywhere else in the world for $15…no chance! Or you can finish with the most perfect Profiteroles I have ever tasted. A plate of three small round, so light, puffs, stuffed with cream and topped with chocolate, a world apart from the usual commercial variety…. a must try!

Locavore has quickly established itself as one of Ubud’s and Bali’s leading restaurants. That would come as no surprise to anyone who had previously tried the food of Chef Eelke during his Indonesian journey. Whether it was at Shy, in Jakarta, or at Ma Joly or Alila Ubud, in Bali, his food has always been special. Locavore was the 3rd Bali restaurant to make it into Asia’s Top 50 [after Mozaic and Sarong in previous years]. Now the group is expanding rapidly. First there was the daytime café, Locavore To Go and the Locavore Deli, then the late night bar The Rooster [up above Golden Monkey]. Now they have also taken over what was Havana Café where a major re-construction is taking place. They have kept their businesses very centralized, all are in Jln. Dewi Sita, Ubud, within 100 metres of each other.

Odette is an attractive and very modern café on Jln. Raya Mas, 10 minutes from Ubud. It specializes in French breads and pastries and offers a selection of breakfasts, snacks, light and full meals, all very international. It is central to the many galleries in this area and a convenient spot to stop and relax.

Ton-Up Bar & Grill is the latest to attempt success in The ByPass in central Sanur. It has a very stylish fit-out [and air-conditioning], more Seminyak than Sanur. They say it is Mods & Rockers [England 60’s] and has a motor cycle theme although the Rockers dressed in leather they rarely had motor bikes, the Mods rode motor scooters. However the menu is very Sanur; Starters are just Garlic Bread, Bruschetta, Chicken Wings, Calamari and Cheese & Chips, though all are reasonably priced. Mains are Burgers, Schnitzels, Parmigiana, Ribs and a variety of meats that you cook yourself at the table on hot stones. Golden Monkey on Jln. Dewi Sita, Ubud has been closed for the past few weeks as they extend their kitchen. It will re-open July 1 and now be able to offer a slightly expanded menu as well as beginning a home delivery service. So expect soon to see Golden Monkey motor bikes with hot boxes on the back whizzing all over Ubud. Perfect for those who want to eat quality Chinese at home, where you can use your fingers instead of chopsticks!

Cocoon, Jln. Double Six at Blue Ocean Beach, Legian, is always the innovator. They are the market leader. As the high season approaches so the prices everywhere go up, year after year. Not at Cocoon, they have totally revamped their menu and with great deals from suppliers have actually reduced their prices for many dishes. Furthermore they have eradicated one of the biggest bugbears for tourists, all prices for food and drinks are now nett, inclusive of tax and service. This often causes much confusion to Bali tourists in general and tourists from Australia in particular where it is illegal to add any extra charge, the price shown on the menu must be the full amount. If you are after just a snack with a drink or two [cocktails from Rp.85,000 nett] then their Grazing Menu is perfect. Tapas, mostly at Rp.45,000 Nett each; Moroccan Spiced Chicken Wings or Vegetarian Spring Rolls [4 of each], Chicken or Crispy Pork Dumplings, great Steam Buns stuffed with roasted pork, with cucumber and pear-hoisin sauce. Share a few 30 cm pizzas, all at 90,000 or less. The full dining option is also there, fine dining quality at budget prices. Start with Battered Zucchini Blossoms stuffed with herbed goat cheese and apple salad or that old faithful, Prawn Cocktail. As the GM is the boy from Lygon Street [Melbourne’s little Italy] the pastas are 100% traditional. Home made actually means ‘on the premises’ not at someone else’s home. Mains include Lamb Shank, Steaks, Chicken, Fish and Roast Duck….even a simple, but perfect, Beer-Battered Fish & Fat Chips. As always, all menu items that are vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free are so marked. This must be the best value in Bali, snack by the pool, dine ‘al fresco’ on the terrace, or inside in the so comfortable restaurant.

37 Hit Parade It’s always good fun to read the local Bahasa language press, as well as informative. Some people like to criticise the media – well, no, everyone likes to do that – and that’s no less common in Indonesia than anywhere. One of the things about critics is that they always know how it could have been done better, or that you’ve missed the real story, possibly on purpose. In an earlier life, one of the Diary’s jobs was to write back to critical readers and gently massage their egos while telling them politely to go get a life. It was often a challenge and helped to fuel an addiction to caffeine from which we know we shall never recover. For those accustomed to western newspaper reading – a dwindling band indeed – there is also the issue here of upside-down stories. Telling the story in the first eight paragraphs is essential for western readers. Most won’t even get that far these days, of course. But Indonesian journalism is far more circuitous. You often find the story in the last eight paragraphs. So it was interesting early this month to read Radar Bali and other media on the great Akasaka Club drug raid. The police found 19,000 Ecstasy pills when they swept into the premises on the afternoon of Jun. 5. They had previously swept into the premises, on Jl. Teuku Umar in Denpasar, on several occasions to far less effect. But this time it was the real deal. The police chief, Inspector-General Petrus Reinhard Golose, said no one was above the law. This will have come as shocking news to the people who operate the Akasaka Club and those who, on all the evidence, have hitherto been protecting them. It’s good news for everyone else, though, unless they’re also running drug dens. It’s a sign that Bali is no longer the unpoliced bad lands of the drug-wild west, or at least that this is the intention. One of the fictions that some people here are fond of circulating is that the drug abuse epidemic is a tourist thing, or at least that, like the rubbish used to, it comes from Java. It’s nothing of the sort, of course. It’s an element of modern Indonesian consumer life that, like the poor, will always be with us. But it can be curtailed by effective police intelligence and action, and certainly should be. Pill-poppers are not all low-life adults. Some of them – foreigners and locals alike – are basically still children. That’s where to stop it. This requires parental supervision of offspring as well as official deterrence. It’s true of course that the misbehaviour envelope in shaped rather differently in Bali, given the island’s transient overburden of tourists and its unpleasant overlay of a cohort of expatriate residents who are here gouging money because they couldn’t make a buck (or anything else) in their own countries. So cutting out the supply chain, or at least radically reducing it, makes sense. Bali’s circumstances also make the island a convenient staging post and supply centre for drugs destined for other places in Indonesia. It’s probably always going to be that way. But at least the Akasaka action will signal that open slather – the situation up to now, which everyone who could be bothered to know about knew about – is no longer something that will be just winked at or tolerated. Four people, including the club manager, have been arrested and police investigations are continuing. Take a bow, General Petrus.

Giddy Aunts and Others The Bali DIVAS’ lunch at Cocoon, Seminyak, on Jul. 9, seemed to go off with the verve and pizazz we’ve come to expect of that décolleté collective. We weren’t there but some of our favourite ladies who lunch tell us MC Kerry Ball was on his best and most restrained behaviour. He did say “oh my giddy aunt” a couple of times, we gather. But that’s an expression that flies well below the social sound barrier and won’t have shattered any windows. Entertainment was by Sydney drag queen Polly Petrie and a friend, Marzi Panne. We’re told that Polly mislaid his eyelashes at one point, but you expect a bit of ungluing on lively occasions such as these and we’re sure he recovered his customary discomposure quickly. It’s the sort of thing for which giddy aunts, and drag queens, are renowned. Debbie Amelsvoort tells us it was a fabulous day full of fun, laughs and – most importantly, as she puts it – incredible generosity from divas at the do. That’s what it’s all about, after all. The event was to raise funds for the village of Songan, at Kintamani, where a landslide in February killed 12 people, including two children. The money will go towards long term improved education opportunities in Songan.

HECTOR’S Well done, ladies. Christina Iskandar can feel justifiably proud of the DIVA enterprise she started and which now has an international dimension. A Gold Coast DIVAS do was held on May 26, cementing the Queensland holiday resort city into the DIVAS’ Australian charity catchment, which also includes Sydney and Melbourne.

No Show What a shame President Joko Widodo was unable to open the 39th Annual Bali Arts Festival on Saturday, Jun. 10, due to other commitments, that always- utilitarian spanner in the works. It must have been chucked in at the eleventh hour. News that the presidential abort button had been pushed became public knowledge on Jun. 10. Maybe he couldn’t find his udeng. He sent tourism minister Puan Maharani instead.

NC/BT/I-21 June 17

It must have been by coincidence that around the same time the presidential office released a lovely little map of the archipelago showing all the places where he’d dropped in – and apparently left a pin, Google Maps style – on his unscheduled blusukan visits. It brought to mind a song written by Australian Geoff Mack in 1959 and later made famous by Johnny Cash, among others. I’ve been everywhere, man.

Top Aussie A name that most Indonesians probably wouldn’t naturally associate with Australia, if they heard it at all, since it’s not Brett or Bruce and doesn’t come with a Bintang singlet, a stubby-holder, and a sharp (or slow) drawl, got an honourable mention in the 2017 Australian Queen’s Birthday Honours List released on the official make-believe birthday of Her Maj (her real one’s on Apr. 21) on Jun. 12: Professor Mohamed Hassan Kadra. He got an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) for distinguished service to medicine in the field of urology as a surgeon, clinician and mentor, to rural and remote medical education, and to literature as an author and playwright.

C/BT/I-15 Feb 17

Professor Kadra is a leading Sydney urologist, but his interests are far wider, including in an enterprise that trains people in IT in other countries where their circumstances might not otherwise give them that opportunity. Most media interest centred on the AC (Companion of the Order) given to the actor Cate Blanchett, but veteran economist Ross Garnaut also got a very well deserved AC, the highest award now that the Aussies have again dropped that daft Knight of Australia thing. The AK – it’s a gong, not a gun, and there aren’t quite 47 of them – was resurrected as a “captain’s call” by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott and quietly pushed off the track and back into the ditch by his successor, Malcolm Turnbull. Leading lawyer and death penalty abolitionist Julian McMahon, who is locally of Bali Nine fame, also got an AC, and former Labor Party minister Robert Tickner got an AO for distinguished service to the community through leadership roles with the Australian Red Cross, and to the Parliament of Australia. Wikipedia has the full list for anyone who’s interested.

Candi Dasher Regular Diary readers will know that the Diary has a soft spot for Candi Dasa, and this scribble comes to you from that fine little seaside town in Karangasem. We’re having a break there again, this time at Sea Breeze at Mendiri Beach in Sengkidu. Wearing another of our hats, we have some serious writing to do. And lovely views of Nusa Penida and the Lombok Strait (rippling Wallace Line included), delicious ice creams just up the road, and a selection of fine little eating places handily close by, are helping tremendously with that project. We’ll drop in at Vincent’s in Candi Dasa itself at some point, quite possibly on one of their live jazz nights, for another go at the Haloumi.

Local News Bali FC players celebrate their diverse religions A symbolic gesture by three footballers from Indonesia’s Bali United FC is being hailed as a celebration of the diversity of their team and country. A photograph of Yabes Roni, who is Christian, along with his team-mates, Miftahul Hamdi, a Muslim, and Ngurah Nanak, a Hindu, in their respective religions’ prayer positions, has been liked and shared more than ten thousand times on the club’s Facebook page after photographer Miftahuddin Halim posted it on his Instagram page. “Because different religious beliefs won’t stop us from achieving the same goals,” the caption under the photo says. Many social media users have described their display as an example of the country’s official motto, “different but one”, and said they take their hats off to the team. The gesture follows a period of heightened religious tensions in the mainly Muslim country, following charges of blasphemy against Jakarta’s former Christian mayor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, who in May, was jailed for two years over the charges. Ngurah Nanak told BBC Indonesia that the gesture from all three had been a spontaneous one after Roni scored a goal in a match against Borneo FC. Fifa forbids players from making political or religious statements on the pitch, but does encourage the recognition of acts promoting diversity or anti-discrimination. [BBC June 8, 2017]

Bali police investigating death of Australian tourist in apparent drowning Police in Bali are investigating the death of an Australian man whose body was found in the pool of a villa in the tourist area of Canggu, north of Kuta. The body of 31-year-old Tyler Kennedy, from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, was discovered by friends on Wednesday night. Mr Kennedy’s friends said he was at the villa for a party and jumped in the pool about 8:30pm. They noticed his body floating in the water about 10 minutes later when they pulled him out and attempted CPR. Police said an investigation did not start until Friday because his death was not immediately reported. An ambulance and doctor were called but Mr Kennedy could not be revived. Schapelle Corby’s parole papers rake in over $20k on eBay The parole book of convicted drug smuggler and newly created social media star Schapelle Corby has sold to an anonymous eBay bidder for $20,100. Corby’s worn parole papers attracted 123 bids in an online auction supporting a children’s charity headed by Adam Whittington, the man at the centre of 60 Minutes’ Beirut child recovery. The auction began last Monday at a starting price of $0.99, and reached the winning bid in one week. All funds raised will go towards Project Rescue Children (PRC), a global child-rescue charity Mr Whittington launched in Australia following his release from a Lebanese jail. Mr Whittington described Corby’s donation as “amazing”. “Being in her horrific position myself in the past, I know how personal this is … Thanks to Schapelle, PRC will be able to make a start in building our first ever PRC safe haven for children in Cambodia…” he posted on Instagram. Mr Whittington previously told News Corp Australia that Corby became aware of the project through John McLeod, a PRC Director and the private security guard who arranged her Bali exit. “Our sincere thanks to Schapelle Corby for entrusting us with something so personal which has now become the catalyst for new opportunities for children at risk,” a post on the charity’s Facebook page read. PRC’s motto is to rescue kidnapped children from child prostitution and slavery. Reports have also emerged that Corby may appear on the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother, but her sister Mercedes has labelled the rumours a “load of crap”. Last month, Corby’s return to Australia from Indonesia sparked a media frenzy and her Instagram account has quickly garnered almost 200,000 followers. [9News. com.au June 12, 2017]

Bali nightclub Akasaka shut down by police Akasaka nightclub in central Denpasar has been closed down until further notice, following a police raid on the club on Monday afternoon that found nearly Rp 10 billion worth of ecstasy pills on the premises. In the massive bust, 19,000 ecstasy pills were confiscated-an estimated value of Rp 9.5 billion, or about $7 million. Police say the drugs found came from a syndicate supplying drugs to Bali. “These items were sent from Jakarta to Surabaya and Bali by private car,” said deputy director of the Bali Police Narcotics Unit, Superintendent Soedjarwoko. Four suspects have reportedly been arrested, identified by local media as WI, IS, NW, and DD. WI is understood to have been the club’s manager. Police believe the drugs would have been sold to customers at the club, as well as other buyers around the island. “It seems the drugs were for distribution around (Akasaka), as well as other areas in Bali,” Soedjarwoko said, as quoted by Detik. A police line has apparently been set up, blocking entrance to the club, while in a notice posted to the entrance of Akasaka, the club’s management apologized for the sudden closure. The notice, in Indonesian, reads: “Let it be announced that Akasaka Karaoke, Music Club & A Club, starting today, June 5, 2017, is not operating until further determined. Apologies for the current condition.” This isn’t the first time Akasaka has gotten into hot water over drugs. “With this case, it’s now three times that there have been drug cases in Akasaka. First it was 5,000 ecstasy pills, then 10,000 ecstasy pills found in 2016.” Despite the club’s repeat offender status, police say they do not have the authority to shut down the institution for good and will need the provincial government to act for more permanent action. Akasaka, located in Simpang Enam on Jl. Teuku Umar, has been around since 1989. The four-story club has karaoke, a discotheque dubbed the A-Club, and restaurant facilities. Police in Bali have been on a real mission to clean up the island’s so-called ‘ailments.’ An operation running until June 12, 2017, called Pekat Agung Operation 2017, is targeting various nightlife-related crimes like prostitution, illegal alcohol, and drugs. The operation’s name even translates to ‘sickness of society.’ [Coconuts Bali June 5, 2017]

East Java woman arrested at Bali airport with nearly 10,000 ecstasy pills Security was not fooled by a woman stopped at Bali’s airport last Thursday with nearly 10,000 pills in her hand luggage. East Java woman, Stefani Anindia Hadi, tried to say she was carrying medicine for headaches when officers in the airport’s domestic terminal pulled out the suspicious quantity of pills packed in to four large plastic bags from her carry-on. After some prodding, the 25-year-old, who had been flying in from Palembang, Sumatra, apparently confessed that the pills were actually ecstasy. Head of the Bali division of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Brig. Gen. I Putu Gede Suastawa explained that Hadi was arrested after a tip from BNN South Sumatra, that there was a passenger on Garuda Indonesia flight GA 266 flying from Palembang to Denpasar with a huge quantity of drugs in hand. “After searching, the evidence was obtained from a carry-on bag. Based on calculations from there, there were 9,675 ecstasy pills,” Suastawa said on Friday, as quoted by Tribun Bali. Following Hadi’s arrest, BNN officers moved to track down the recipient of the smuggled drugs, eventually arresting Sukron Wardana, 27, at a hotel in Kuta. Both Hadi and Wardana are originally from Banyuwangi, East Java, Suastawa told reporters. After searching Wardana’s home in Kerobokan, officers did not find any narcotics and say they are still hunting the person who ordered Sukron to take the pills brought in by Hadi. This was not Hadi’s first time playing the mule in a drug operation, says Suastawa. Last March, the woman was given Rp 40 million to carry drugs into Bali, which apparently went through without a hitch. But it only takes getting caught once for the blossoming career of a courier to get derailed. Police have not yet publicly announced if Hadi has been charged, but those caught trafficking class I narcotics in Indonesia, such as ecstasy, could get a life sentence in prison with a hefty fine-or more extreme, the death penalty. Hadi’s arrest comes after popular Denpasar nightclub Akasaka was raided earlier this month. Police found Rp 10 billion worth of ecstasy pills on the premises. [Coconuts Bali June 12, 2017]

Bali Arts Festival 2017 to be streamed live Bali Arts Festival 2017 is collaborating with media company Bali Go Live to conduct live streaming throughout the festival slated for June 10 to July 8. “We are collaborating with Bali Go Live […] they’ll make the event go viral through live streaming that will be available on their website, as well as social media engagements on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and LinkedIn,” said Bali Tourism Agency head Anak Agung Yuniartha Putra. Bali Go Live director Paulus Herry Arianto says interesting content will be presented during the live streaming. Moreover, he says Bali Go Live doesn’t just promote Bali but also encourages Balinese youths to be more proud of their own culture and philosophies. “Bali Go Live is a video channel that is connected to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms. Our mission is to become the digital encyclopedia for everything about Bali and strengthening Bali’s position as one of the best tourism destinations in the world,” said Paulus. [The Jakarta Post June 10, 2017] Government mulls hotel price controls to control price war underway between Bali hotels Kompas.com reports that the Bali Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) and the Provincial Government are growing increasingly concerned with what is viewed as unhealthy price competition in the badly over-built tourist accommodation market. In a market in which three-starred hotels are charging rates less than Rp. 300,000 per night, the BPPD and the Provincial Administration are concerned that the elegance and quality of the Bali travel product are under threat. The head of BPPD and chief of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI-Bali), Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati (Coka Ace), said on Monday, June 5, 2107, he has been concerned about the continuing hotel price war and its impact on the economy over the past three years. Because of this, Cok Ace has urged the Provincial Government of Bali to mediate the price war through standardization of pricing policies. In the past, he explained, efforts at standardization have been limited to granting star ratings based on the number of rooms and the overall quality of the hotel. To date, however, there have been no moves to standardize hotel pricing, leaving hotels free to pursue higher occupancies, frequently at the consequence of lower prices. Meanwhile, Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika has issued a press announcement urging the creation of a legal basis for controlling the pricing policies of hotels in Bali, stipulating the minimum price that hotels of a specific star rating are allowed to sell their rooms. The Governor has invited the industry and the academic community to undertake a careful study to determine the most effective way to control pricing and sanctions to be applied when hotels are found to be ignoring government pricing policies. Statistics from the Central Statistic Bureau (BPS) in Bali calculates 281 starred hotels in Bali, 89 of which have 3-star ratings. [www.balidiscovery.com June 11, 2017] US man gets nine years in prison for aiding Bali murder A US judge on Friday sentenced a Chicago man to nine years in prison for his role in the 2014 murder of an American woman while she was vacationing on the Indonesian island of Bali. Robert Ryan Justin Bibbs, 26, pleaded guilty in December to advising his cousin Tommy Schaefer in the murder of Sheila von Wiese, the US Department of Justice said. The 62-year-old was bludgeoned to death with a fruit bowl in her hotel room at the St. Regis Bali resort, and her body stuffed in a suitcase and left in the trunk of a taxi. Indonesian police arrested Schaefer and von Weise’s daughter Heather Mack, who was in a relationship with him. The two are serving prison sentences in Indonesia. Bibbs - who authorities say believed the three would gain access to von Weise’s estate after her death - pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit the foreign murder of a US national. In his plea agreement, he admitted that he advised Schaefer on various methods of murder and on how to get away with the crime, prosecutors said. “Repeatedly, the prospect of Von Wiese’s killing was broached and defendant elected to push the plot forward, rather than stop it,” Assistant US Attorney Bolling Haxall said in a sentencing memorandum. Authorities discovered evidence that Bibbs and Schaefer engaged in several text message conversations about murdering von Weise. “Go sit on her face wit (sic) a pillow,” Bibbs allegedly wrote in one text message, according to authorities. Schaefer confessed to the murder, but claimed he was defending himself during an argument with von Wiese, who was unhappy that her daughter was pregnant. Schaefer, who was 21 at the time of the crime, is serving an 18-year prison sentence. Mack, who was 19, was sentenced to 10 years. [FTM News June 3, 2017] German tourist dies on rural hike in North Bali A German tourist, Florian Blohmeke (33), died while trekking along a riverbank in the North Bali on Thursday, June 1, 2017. Blohmeke, who was visiting the village of Kayuputih with a companion, Susame Meber (28), apparently slipped in the river and struck his head on a stone at approximately 4:00 pm. Earlier in the day, the couple had checked into the Aditya Munduk Home Stay at Munduk. When the man slipped, Meber called for help, bringing several local men bathing in the river to lend assistance. As reported by NusaBali, the local men quickly removed the German from the river. Blohmeke apparently died instantly when he struck his head on the rock. The man’s body was sent to the General Hospital in Buleleng for further disposition. Police are treating the death as an accident. [www.balidiscovery.com June 4, 2017]
