tots to teens, the concert is a chance to witness how far the students have progressed throughout the year. Performing a mixture of modern, classical, jazz and more, these talented dancers are sure to impress with many destined for success on the stage in the future.

Bring Your Santa Sack & Bag a Bargain Well roundup the reindeer and call me Rudolph if Finns Food & Wine Festival isn’t going to be the best opportunity in Bali to get ahead of the game and make a dent in your Christmas shopping list! That’s right socialites and shoppers, it’s on again, but while Friday December 8th at Finns Recreation Club may be the final Food & Wine Festival for 2017, it’s sure to see out the end of the year with some extra sparkle! Perfectly timed to get a handle on your Christmas shopping, December’s event has even more in store for members and guests with over 60 market stalls bursting with festive season goodies. We all love a Christmas market as they’re the best time to buy with vendors usually adding some extra bling and tinsel to their handcrafted wares, so bring your santa sack

and bag a bargain. Finns Food & Wine Festival always presents a scrumptious array of fresh, locally produced foods to tempt your palate and Gold and Platinum members can whet their whistle with the usual 3 free drink vouchers to start the highballs rolling. No shortage of fun for the whole family either as Splash Water Park is open and free for everyone to enjoy from 3pm. Artists throughout the evening should keep the beat rolling as well as plenty of family friendly activities to keep your little elves out of your hair while you browse the market! To mark the end of another school term and calendar year, December’s Food & Wine Festival goers are guaranteed a special treat as Miss Claire’s JSA Love to Dance troupe will perform their end of year dance recital on centre stage! From

Much More than Just a Decorative Doll

Usually hailing from the poorest villages across Bali, these children are often sent by their families to the ‘city’ to beg for money on the streets. They are generally controlled by

Come along and join in some pre Christmas fun because the end of the year is fast approaching and….well….’tis the season so who needs an excuse! Mark December 8th on your social calendar and gather your friends together for a laid back evening of music, dance, liquid refreshment and some much needed retail therapy! Be sure to bring your shopping bag as you’re bound to find more than a few items you can cross off the Christmas list and maybe a bauble or two for you! On second thought….saddle up the ‘Bali sleigh’ (cue the Scoopy…) ‘cos your’e going to need something to carry home your Christmas stash!

younger children. YKPA offers some hope for a better future. Like many charities in Bali, YKPA relies heavily on much appreciated donations and the work volunteers to keep it up and running. To supplement these donations and at the same time, build a skill set and a sense of purpose, the children also sell their paintings and make dolls which are sold around numerous boutiques and venues across the island, many even making their way to retail outlets offshore!

Pull up to a red light at almost any major intersection in Kuta and you’re likely to hear a soft tap at your window. Most people might look straight ahead and try not to notice the young, tousle haired figure at the window and continue to go about their day, attempting to put the welfare of this youngster out of their minds… but Putu Etiartini is not like ‘most people’. After years of concern as to the plight of these impoverished children, Putu was determined to find out more and set about getting to know these kids and gain their trust. What began as a temporary school under a tarp soon evolved into Yayasan Kasih Peduli Anak (The Bali Street Kids Project) - a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to ‘give support, education, care and skills for disadvantaged children to have the opportunity of a satisfying and productive life’. Ten years on Putu’s efforts are paying off and YKPA is a well known, licensed charity offering care and lodging (on a casual or permanent basis), shelter, education and outreach schooling for the many kids who are still trying to make a living off the street.

Food & Wine Festival evenings commence from 3pm until 10pm on the lawn at Finns Recreation Club and everyone, (member or otherwise) is welcome to attend. Take time to wind down at the week’s end and chill out with friends while the younger members of the family are safe and secure to run, play and splash the evening away. With great drink specials available and a huge variety of irresistible gourmet offerings at very reasonable price tags, you can feed and entertain the family with ease.

There are numerous different dolls in various shapes and sizes and each is a one-of-a-kind-creation produced by the kids and the mums from the villages. The dolls are fashioned from a wooden frame covered in colourful cotton yarn and clothing - each with a different name, face and hairstyle! Every doll is different in some way, hand made and more than likely, in some way tell a story about their maker. Each doll has a name and you can choose to purchase a male or female in small, medium or large or even as a key ring! ‘bosses’ who regularly check on the children to collect what they have acquired thought the day. Sadly, as is often the case, little of the money makes it way back to the children or their families in the village, a factor that often deters many people from offering financial assistance. These children have little or no opportunity or means to attend school or acquire a basic education, something that often continues this cycle of poverty as the kids grow up to become the ‘bosses’ and continue to perpetuate the exploitation of

Dolls are distributed for sale at various venues across the island including boutiques, holiday villas and restaurants or directly from the Yayasan shop in Denpasar. Finns Beach Club boutique and the Splash Shop at Finns Recreation Club also stock the dolls and monies raised from the sale go directly to support The Bali Street Kids Project. In addition to making great gifts, the revenue from your purchase goes to a worthy cause. This year, as you decide what to put in the Santa stocking for your loved ones, add a few extra YKPA dolls to the shopping list and make more than just one little angel smile.

Time to Play Santa and See the Kids Smile

Without a doubt, Christmas can be an exciting time of year! It’s the season where families come together to share gifts and enjoy invaluable time with loved ones. Weeks leading up to December 25th are tinged with anticipation and bubbling excitement as well as plans for festive get togethers, social engagements and shopping excursions to find the perfect present for those dear to your hearts. This year, as you sit and ponder, ready to pen your family’s wish list, why not spare a thought for those youngsters who can’t be with their loved ones due to unfortunate circumstances beyond their control; those whose health, happiness and wellbeing depend largely on the generosity of others and whose current family consist of volunteer carers, visitors and roommates. This year, add an extra present or two to the shopping list and grant a wish for one of the children at Jodie O’Shea Orphanage.

Every year from December 1st, a traditional Christmas Tree takes pride of place in the foyer of Finns Recreation Club, but instead of shimmering with the usual tinsel and baubles, this tree boasts decorations of a different kind. More than just an ornament, it is a symbol of hope and generosity. Attached to the branches are tags bearing the names and details of each child from the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage in Denpasar, along with one item they would wish to receive on Christmas Day. You won’t find any requests for iPhones, laptops or big name brands here. Preferences are simple, day to day items, the likes that most of us (and our children) might take for granted such as T shirts, sports shoes, clothing, art materials and back packs. Before you don your santa hat and head out on your trek to track down 2017’s presents and stocking fillers, simply grab a tag from the Jodie O’Shea Wishing Tree and register the name

and details you find on the tag with the reception team at Finns Rec Club. Once you have purchased and wrapped your gift, drop it back to reception. The aim is to get the presents to Finns by December 20th at the latest so that staff have enough time to organise any extra gifts that may be required. Feel free to select as many tags from the tree as you like!

On Christmas Day, December 25th, Finns Recreation Club will host its annual Xmas Lunch and, as is the case every year, they will once again extend an invitation for the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage family to join the fun. All of the children are treated to lunch with the Finns family and guests, games and fun on the slides at Splash as well as a visit from ‘Santa’ when these generously donated gifts will be distributed to each and every child. Most of us who celebrate the spirit of the season understand that the gift of giving can often be the most rewarding, but little more can put warmth in your heart and a tear in your eye than witnessing the smiles on the faces of these kids as they unwrap a gift that has been chosen just for them. Put a little extra for others in the stocking this Christmas…. Take a tag from the tree and some time to choose for someone who has less, ‘for it is in giving, that we receive’ (Francis of Assisi). The Jodie O’Shea Wishing Tree will be in Finns Recreation Club foyer from December 1st, from which date you are welcome to drop by and select a tag from the tree. 9 IS IT TIME TO TAKE OUR CHIPS OFF THE TABLE? If you have been to a rock concert you will appreciate the huge difference in participating in a live event compared to listening to the same music on a DVD (or for free on YouTube which has turned the music industry upside down). In the financial services industry the equivalent of a rock concert would be a live presentation by the leaders of top financial institutions as opposed to reading their regular reports in the press or on the Internet. The messages may be the same but when presented in person and in an interactive environment they carry a lot more weight and provide a better understanding of the processes that lead to the decisions they make with billions of dollars of investors’ money. I have been to quite a few rock concerts in my time (Everly Brothers, Little Richard, Rolling Stones, Jet Harris, Scorpions and more) and they were a bit more exciting perhaps than the financial event I attended earlier this month in London, namely a Think Tank organised by Momentum Investment Managers. Nevertheless the messages that emerged from the conference are probably of greater relevance than a rock concert to the many expat readers who have savings plans, financial portfolios, pension schemes etc. that they are counting on to provide their future financial security. I would therefore like to share some of the thoughts that came from these ‘rock stars’ of the financial world such as Allianz, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs. Particularly since we are seeing a contradiction today of ever-rising stock markets against a background of almost unprecedented political instability.

• The Goldman Sachs speaker took a positive view on emerging markets and commodities, two sectors that saw a sharp reversal while other asset classes were rising in recent years. He saw Brexit as being a lot of drama followed by a settlement although he was less positive should there be a change of government to Labour under Corbyn which he thought would cause the UK to resemble a ‘Cuba without the sun’! He felt that should there be a ‘technical correction’ in the markets it would be a fairly fast down and up again. • One speaker focused on ‘liquid alternatives’ as an asset class that can help diversify and soften the impact of any correction. These are not the notorious ‘illiquid alternatives’ that caused havoc following the 2008 financial crisis but funds that trade daily in global stock and bond markets. An example is a ‘long-short’ fund where the ‘short’ element can make a profit when stocks fall. • Property funds - We all know the benefits of owning property and also the potential downside, in particular its illiquid nature resulting in the inability to sell the asset for months or even years. But it is possible to have a safer holding in the market through listed funds that are daily traded. Such funds own construction company shares for example so can benefit from some of the expansion we are seeing around the world in housing estates, shopping malls and more recently in the field of logistics with the likes of Amazon who need more and more warehouse space for their distribution networks. Again an opportunity to diversify without locking in capital. So how are multi-asset funds using this advice?

How should we react to world events? It is not easy to compress over 12 hours of detailed presentations into one column but I can select a few major points and some of the messages that came over. One common theme was whether we should be positioning ourselves for a big correction that could follow some nine years of mainly rising markets since the Global Financial Crisis of 2008. The following are the some of the major points that emerged and which might help to address that question: Headwinds that pose a threat to markets: Trump, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Brexit, slowing growth in China, globalisation, digitisation, high debt levels, changing demographics. • Despite the headwinds global stock markets have continued to rise this year, many to record levels. US markets, in spite of political chaos, have been particularly strong. • Although markets have risen steadily there are no obvious ‘bubbles’ emerging that might trigger the next ‘crash’. • Inflation in major economies is holding below 2% but there is no threat of deflation which could produce another recession. In fact a couple of speakers suggested we were in a ‘Goldilocks’ situation, not too hot, not too cold (referring to the porridge). • Whilst market conditions were ‘benign’ most investors were cautious. • Stock valuations are high but have not become excessive. • Rising populism in many countries could result in tax changes. • Interest rate rises are expected but they are likely to be very gradual. • With global growth steady there could be a few years left in the current bull market but steps should be taken to reduce risk given the many headwinds. • Infrastructure investing - a good hedge in harder times as it is more defensive than most equity investments. • While there has been a growing trend towards ‘passive’ investing through ‘ETFs’ - a means of buying into an index and reducing charges - one speaker defended the art of ‘value’ investing in the manner of the world’s most successful investor, Warren Buffet. His fund selects 33 of the most ‘undervalued’ stocks, subject to certain criteria and considerable analysis and holds them for as long as it takes to reach ‘fair value’ which can mean several years. In the majority of cases this has worked well and has produced returns that have put the fund’s performance into the top 1% of its peers in the same asset class. Economic, political and market forces have little relevance in this instance and chips are never taken off the table for those reasons.

C/BT/G-13 Sept 17

Their job is to take into account the views of the economists and other experts and translate them into meaningful actions within their funds. In the case of the multi-asset, multimanager fund that organised this particular event it means they will: • Basically stay on course with an emphasis on stocks despite current high values and the possibility of a correction. • But they will reduce stock holdings to a certain degree and further diversify their funds by allocating some of their resources to alternative assets, listed property shares and listed infrastructure shares. • Buy ‘put options’ that offer a measure of insurance against shocks to the market. • Be acutely aware of the need to be well-diversified.

INDO-NED CONSULTANCY YOUR BUSINESS SOLUTIONS

Need for personal action? If you have delegated the management of your assets to a multi-asset, multi-manager fund the job is being done for you, but if you haven’t done so the points covered above should provide a few ideas on how to cope with market uncertainties without missing opportunities. As for ‘taking your chips off the table’ the message that came through at the financial ‘rock concert’ was to leave them on the table but make a few adjustments by moving some of the chips around. And it goes without saying that you should always hold adequate cash reserves so the only chips on the table should be those that can stay there for the longer term.

STRESS BUSTER “I’m really stressed out!” “I’ve been under a lot of stress, lately.” How many times have you either said this or heard someone say it in the past week? Is it our lifestyles that causes stress? Too much work to do? The kids driving you nuts? Lack of money? Your partner being annoying? The dogs keep barking? All of these things and more can cause stress. Too much stress over an extended period of time can cause illness. High blood pressure, heart attack and Cancer is a big one. We all know stress is bad for us. What do you do to reduce or better yet eliminate your stress? Some people find meditation relaxing. For some a walk or a run on the beach. Go to the gym for a good work out. Dance it out. Have a massage. For me, I find having my Bars run regularly reduces and eliminates stress. For me this is the number one stress buster. It works every time and for practically everyone. It makes you feel happy. What are The Bars? I’m not talking about going drinking or heading out to Sky Garden or Finns’ Beach Club to have some beers. While this may help temporarily, you’ll probably end up with a hangover in the morning.

who couldn’t get to sleep without medication for years; that night she slept like a baby and continued to go to sleep every night without a pill and sleep soundly. She was so happy. Many people find they have a deep peaceful sleep after having the Bars. Some people are able to face their fears and overcome something that they’ve been avoiding for perhaps years. Some people are able to stop always thinking about an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend. It’s amazing what people want to change in their life: eating healthy, getting a better job, having more money, resolving issues with friends or family, finding their soul-mate or simply choosing to be happy. The Bars was discovered by Gary Douglas, the founder of A c c e s s Consciousness over 25 years ago. The reason they’re called the Bars is because the 32 points run parallel through the energy bands on the head. Each point has a partner on the opposite side of the head. It can even be performed while watching a movie to bring up “points of view” to eliminate from your brain. However, music will disrupt the flow of energy. Consequently, no musicals. Occasionally a group of Bars practitioners will get together for a movie night and run one another’s Bars. Once a group of us wore 3-D glasses while watching Avatar. That was a fun night! Benefits Having your Bars run will make you feel peaceful and happy. It can bring more awareness to view the world in a different way. It’s been effective in treating children with learning disabilities. It’s perfect if you’re feeling a bit frazzled and had a bad day and clears out negative thoughts.

The Bars is a treatment on your head. Not a massage. There are 32 points on your head relating to various beliefs that you’re holding on to like: money, health, sadness, joy, communication and creativity just to name a few. A practitioner gently touches these points and maintains contact for several minutes and asks the “energy to run through them”. These are the beliefs that are no longer valid in your life, going back thousands of years to previous lifetimes. These are called Implants which are beliefs that you’re holding on to. For example: those horrible pictures on cigarette packages of cancer to make you believe that if you smoke these cigarettes you’ll get cancer. That doesn’t make it true. It’s just a belief that’s been implanted in your brain. Know that one time won’t clear out everything. Let’s say for example that you once lived in a place where tigers were a danger to your existence. But you no longer live in a place that holds this danger, which makes it invalid now. So this belief can be deleted from your brain. It’s easiest to compare it to defragging your brain like your computer. In 60 to 90 minutes a multitude of beliefs can be eliminated from your brain. Things you may not even remember. Within a minute or two you begin to relax. You can talk with the practitioner if you like or simply be quiet or even fall asleep. It works no matter what! A skillful practitioner can help you to change things in your life by asking questions and using clearing statements. Just like hitting the delete button on your computer. You can never predict what will change, but the worst: you’ll feel like you’ve had a great massage. You’re so relaxed at the end of the treatment. The best: your life starts to change for the better! I’ve seen amazing transformations with people. One woman

Working with the Bars also entails asking questions of the universe to change the things that aren’t working in your life. Don’t look for the answer, that’s up to the universe. Asking questions like: • “How does it get any better than this?” (Used when something very bad or good has happened) • “What else is possible?” (when looking for other possibilities) • “What will it take to create more money?” (for example) • “Interesting point of view, I have this point of view.” (when faced with judgment or experiencing pain) • “What can I do or be different today to create more happiness in my life?” By getting your Bars run regularly and keep asking questions you can create real change in your life and be the person you were meant to be to make this world a better place. You can receive a Bars session from one of the practitioners in Bali or learn in a day. For a list of Bars facilitators in Bali E: spa.inspirations@gmail.com

This Sporting Life This month This Sporting Life covers two major events of two of Bali’s most popular expat football codes - Rugby Union and Australian Rules RUGBY UNION NEWS National Rugby 7s Championships: Road to Asian Games – Bali right in the mix! Rugby Development Bali (PRUI Bali) recently sent two representative senior teams to Jakarta for the National 7s Championships. Reflecting the growth of rugby in Indonesia more than 11 provinces in men and 7 provinces in women participated in the largest and most widely provincially dispersed national competition for Indonesian Rugby. The focus of the 2017 event for Indonesian Rugby (PRUI) was to prepare for hosting rugby at next year’s Asian Games. For Rugby Development Bali (the development program of PRUI Bali) the two teams reflected 12 months of development and effort to grow the game in regional Bali. Indeed the young squad of 12 Balinese men and 10 Balinese women showed great promise and dedication to their team mates and Rugby Development Bali will look to the future with bright prospects! Certainly this was reflected that at the conclusion of the event, in which notably both the men’s and women’s divisions were won by DKI Jakarta province, Rugby Development Bali could proudly announce 5 of its athletes were selected for the Indonesian national team training squad. Those being: Dewa Gede Dharma, Florian Rizal (both from Tegallalang, Ubud) and Ade Saputra (from Singaraja) in the men; while Elisabet Yikwa (from Denpasar) and Megi Rosita (from Kintamani) were selected for the women squad.

AFL NEWS Geckos retain Asian title AFL Asian Championships 2017 – Manila The Asian Championships of AFL were recently held in Manila with 15 teams competing over two divisions. The team from Bali, the Bali Geckos, competed in division 2 defending the title they won last year in Vietnam. Ten teams participated in Division 2 with teams from Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, a combined team from Thailand/Cambodia/Laos (IndoChina), Myanmar, Macau and newcomers PNG the opponents of the Geckos.PNG was the opening game for the Geckos and being newcomers with a large squad they were considered one of the favourites for the tournament. The Geckos were up to the challenge though and hit their larger opponents with a vigor that set the standard for the day. Geckos ran out winners by 26 points and gave PNG a taste of the competitiveness of Asian AFL Football. Next up the Geckos accounted for Singapore easily giving them momentum into a difficult clash with China. China had got within a point of the Geckos in the 2016 semifinal and expected to improve on that effort. Accurate kicking from the Geckos and pressure on the Chinese ball players saw the Geckos run out convincing winners 6 goals 2 behinds to 0 goals 5 behinds.

It was evident that the coaching of AFL premiership player Rick Olarenshaw had had an impact with the Geckos, with great structure, ball use and pressure being superior to most opponents. The last game of the qualifying rounds saw the Geckos take on fellow undefeated team, Indochina. The Geckos controlled the game for the majority opening up a 19 point lead with only three minutes to go. A relaxing of effort, a few untimely interchanges and a bit of bad luck saw Indochina score three quick goals to get within a point of the Geckos. The Geckos dug deep and held on for the last minute or so to run out winners of the Pool and progress to the Semi Finals. The knockout semi was against Myanmar who were runners up last year. Another hard fought contest saw the Geckos dominate with better ball use and run out comfortable winners setting up a re-match with Indochina in the final who had taken care of a tiring Vietnam in their semi. After Geckos President, Greg Hinchliffe, spoke with the team instilling a couple of jedi mind tricks on overcoming their tired legs, the Geckos were in no mood for giving Indochina a look-in during the Grand Final and smashed them from the re-starts slamming on the first 7 goals of the match during the first 10 minutes. It was as dominant a display by any team all day and the Geckos ran out comfortable winners by 9 goals by the final siren. Hinchcliffe continued “Gecko’s local players, Aan, Dachi and Tony all had fantastic tournaments and Peter (Dengue) Fever was adjudged player of the tournament. Bryce Critch and Jaran Pantic added All Asian medals to their premiership medallions and Stuart Cooper was leading goal kicker for the tournament. It was a fantastic team effort by all and we look forward to bringing home more silverware from Division One next year.” Congratulations from the Bali Advertiser.

In the competition it self the Bali men and women 7s teams both won 3 games and closely lost 3 games. The talk afterwards was that the Bali women were the surprise team of the tournament having made their first ever appearance. They demonstrated strength, skill and improvement to almost take home the 3rd place trophy: that had to be decided on count back and ultimately was awarded to West Java. Well done team BAGUL, coaches Kurt Lovell and Richardo Bano, medic Faiz Lovell and also support staff Pak Yasa, Pak Arta, Pak Erawan and Ni Kadek Asih. Bali Rugby MANTAP! Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

At what age do children in Bali starting learning gamelan? Outside of Bali, a child who starts playing music at a kindergarten age is often considered naturally gifted, sometimes labeled a genius, a prodigy or similar. In Bali, however, this is not always so; and in fact it’s expected that children play music (and dance) from a very young age, basically as soon as they can walk. Why is this? Since Balinese culture is based on a communal, community based system focused around the Hindu Dharma religion that encourages creativity and devotion through art, from birth children are surrounded by music. In Bali, this music is called gamelan: a collection of mostly percussive instruments ranging in number from two to fifty and made of a variety of materials, most commonly bronze. Interestingly enough, a century ago it was in fact less common for young children to play gamelan than it is today, particularly in one group together. I’ve come across the odd photo from the 1930s of children incorporated into an ensemble but never an entire group of kids practicing or performing gamelan. Perhaps this was because it was very expensive for a village to purchase instruments and then fix them if they were damaged. Around 1936, Colin McPhee, a musicologist and composer from Canada and resident of Sayan in Ubud, funded a children’s gamelan angklung group; at the same time encouraging a revival of the then-rare bamboo rattles once included in these ensembles called angklung kocok. In fact, he wrote a book about it called A Group of Small Men. He claimed that this group became a real attraction, a talking point amongst villagers, which suggests that it may have been the first of its kind. Nowadays, children’s groups are very common with kids as young as four or five years old joining in. Initially, they only featured in temple or banjar ceremonies but today you can see them at festivals and other government-sponsored events. Since the advent of gender wayang (a 10-keyed xylophone that uses a difficult two-handed technique) and kendang (double-headed drum) competitions, we are seeing more and more really young kids getting involved and even competing well against the older kids. In fact, many more middle class parents are engaging private teachers so that through their kids they can “keep up with the Jones’”. More in my next edition of Kulture Kid on how early learning can be encouraged without the necessity of competition. QUICK REVIEW

A Steakhouse in Bali! Boy ‘N’ Cow is a steakhouse. A play on words, there may be many cowboys on the beef ranches of Texas but there are not many beef ranches in Miami where chef Danny comes from, but he sure knows how to grill a steak! I have been asked, many times, whether there was a steak house in Bali. Whilst steak features on just about every menu in Bali, there has only ever been one before. Set up by Raymond Saja at Karma Jimbaran it was excellent but did not last long. Now another American chef is at the grill, at Boy ‘N’ Cow. The fit out is so professional, loft-like, but a steakhouse feel about it, brick design walls with overlaying black and white murals and comfortable seating. Upstairs is an open mezzanine, a long bar and a few small tables for more intimate dining. You immediately get the feeling that they know what they are doing. Inside the front entrance is a glassed-in temperature and humidity controlled room with racks of beef, of many different cuts, all at some stage of the dry ageing process. At Boy ‘N’ Cow the beef is not used until it has reached 28 days dry aged.

For a shared table [2-3 persons] or a VERY hungry carnivore there are two 900 gm servings, Porterhouse from Australia or Rib-Eye on the bone from USA. You select your accompanying sauce and vegetables. As you would expect in a quality steakhouse the choice of red wines is excellent, many styles from 8 different countries of origin. This is the ultimate in steak, tasty and tender.

However there are many non-beef dishes available here as well. Start with a Tuna Tostada, the tuna is combined with avocado, cucumber, sesame seeds and chilli oil, topped with salmon roe. Crab Cakes are with burnt lemon and a charred corn salsa. The Hamachi Ceviche uses Japanese Jackfish with radish, onion and orange, yuzu vinaigrette. Salt Baked Beets are served with feta cheese, pistachio and cucumber. The Pickled Eggplant is interesting, with seaweed, crisp shallots and miso vinaigrette. For something different, the Foie Gras sits on a brioche, a

LIVING UNDER THE VOLCANO Those of us living in the energy field of Gunung Agung have been holding our collective breath for weeks now. The first month of dealing with the reality of a grumbling volcano on the doorstep generated much anxiety and busy preparation. But you can’t hold your breath for weeks at a time. The status of the volcano was downgraded from 4 to 3 and we’ve all been exhaling ever since. Living under a restless volcano has become the New Normal. But don’t dismiss Gunung Agung yet. Rio Helmi is an Ubud-based journalist and photographer who’s been visiting the area almost daily by motorbike and is in constant dialogue with the scientists monitoring the volcano from nearby Rendang. From his blog on Ubud Now and Then, “Mt Agung is a closed system volcano which has never been recorded by instrumentation during an active phase. So scientists are now literally recording Mt Agung’s in-depth volcanological history for the first time. The day-by-day changes that a huge 3142 meter high, geologically stratified mass can undergo is fascinating. There are 39 million cubic meters of active magma inside the mountain’s © Rio Helmi belly, now just four kilometers from the crater’s surface. It doubled to this amount in just two days between November 9 and 11, signaled by a powerful, Richter scale 5+ local tectonic quake that woke up many of the island’s population at 5:56am. “Before that, we lay people were lulled by the drastic drop in seismic activity and the alert level being brought down to 3 from 4. After 1,000 tremors a day, 100 - 200 tremors can seem insignificant. The volcanologists up in Rendang, however, have been watching ever more intently, and have been joined by several members of the United States Geological Services (USGS). “So here’s one of the most powerful volcanoes in the world, an inscrutable closed system, and there are no scientific records of previous eruptions. The ramp-up was fast, a matter of days. There are around 35,000 people living in zones that would be directly and dangerously affected. No disaster or evacuation training or volcanic phenomena knowledge has been transferred to them. The area is difficult to evacuate in a hurry; most of the routes are treacherous.” It’s pretty quiet down here in mainstream Bali. There are fewer tourists around; shops and restaurants are half empty but for most, life goes on as usual. For daily volcano updates we rely on Jackie Pomeroy’s comprehensive posts on Facebook page Community Ubud. It’s easy to lose sight of the continuing situation in Bali’s north east, where thousands of displaced families are living in limbo, still holding their collective breath. An estimated about 50,000 evacuees are living in 282 official,

poorly resourced camps and and unknown number in informal camps or staying with relatives or in banjars in safe zones. The numbers are constantly changing and hard to pin down. “After the alert level dropped, people in the official camps were told to go home and no longer received food supplies,” Rio reports. With no income, little or no food and without the education to interface with bureaucracy to obtain food and subsidies, many families have returned to their homes within the danger zones. “One very positive thing is that disaster mitigation expert Eko Teguh Paripurno has dropped his teams of volcano volunteers into several of the villages in Bali closest to the volcano,” he adds. “These are villagers from Java who have received and successfully implemented proper programs for evacuation and are trained to pass on their knowledge. They stay in the villages for several days, not only training but also getting the villagers to design their own evacuation program, and assessing it at the end of the day.”

sponsored by Kahiyang Coffee Arjuna in Ubud. So every rupiah donated goes to directly support people affected by the ongoing activity of Mount Agung. In terms of transparency, AS will not disclose the names of donors but will open its books to donors so they can see where money goes. Likes on Facebook don’t feed people. Donations feed people. What keeps the tired, over-extended volunteers going? The support of the donors, who range from local farmers to Balinese students to foreigners. I’ve heard many stories of ordinary Balinese buying sacks of rice, packing up extra clothes and driving out to deliver them to evacuees. Animal welfare organisations and individuals are feeding abandoned dogs in the danger zones.

There are 39 million cubic meters of active magma inside the mountain’s belly, now just four kilometers from the crater’s surface. Two of the volunteer organisations supporting evacuees on the ground are based in Ubud. Mount Agung Relief (MAR) is a joint community effort coordinated by Kopernik, IDEP, Bumi Sehat, Rio Helmi, Rucina Ballinger, Bali ZEN and Green School parents to respond to the urgent and evolving needs of people who have been displaced due to Mount Agung’s increased volcanic activity. It is currently focusing on four initiatives: water filters, toilet and hand-washing stations, N95 respiratory masks and education kits on disaster preparedness. As of November 8, the relief effort had raised US$89,387. These funds have been used to deliver 36 truckloads to 20 evacuation points in Bangli, Tabanan, Karangasem and Buleleng regencies. Mount Agung Relief has distributed 471 Nazava water filters and 19,870 face masks, and trained 718 community leaders on disaster preparedness. The relief effort has also built 26 toilets and two bathrooms. Another initiative is Agung Siaga (AS), a group of Indonesian volunteers who provide food, information and other practical support. Agung Siaga works in cooperation with MAR, delivering food and other supplies to evacuees by truck and car. Agung Siaga responds to needs identified through MAR, from making its own field observations, or hearing about neglected camps through informal field reports. Food is the most pressing issue; people in the camps are going hungry. Agung Siaga purchases fresh vegetables from local farmers who are feeling the pinch of reduced tourism. Some evacuees are in big tents with toilets but many have been camping in makeshift shelters and are dependent on the tolerance of banjars or relatives. The rapid influx of people into areas which already lack abundant clean water, sewage and waste management will inevitably have an impact on local environments and health. The camps are in areas that are already poor and have little to share. So Agung Siaga is distributing hygiene kits as well as food. Agung Siaga is an entirely volunteer organisation and space for their Logistics and Information Hub is generously

C/Bm/I-01 Feb 17

This project is also taken to remote areas where again reading books and stationery are supplied to the schools. These schools are in an even direr situation as they are so isolated and poor, unable to access let alone purchase these items.

The Three Rs, - Reading, (W) riting and Rotary! I am sure that 99.9% of readers of the Bali Advertiser, experienced an education whereby monetary payment was not an issue? From Playschool or kindergarten to primary and secondary education it was free and there was no escape!! Or do I hear a few murmurs? “I played truant, / I wagged it”??? But ultimately those pranks ended in being caught and “punishment “duly meted out! School was a full day, 9-3.30 or 4, depending on where you lived, could have started earlier but basically a 6-7 hour day. What did you wear? –school uniform? Both girls and boys were subjected to it, girls in dresses that looked like sacks, pinafores, blouses/ties- ugh!! Long socks , sensible lace up shoes/ PE/sports clothes, navy bloomers, shorts, blouses, no matter what the weather or your state of health – there was no escaping. The boys were no better off with knee length shorts, shirts, ties, sensible shoes, and PE/sports clothes. What about winter, for those of us brought up in colder climates? Woollen jumpers, thick undergarments, hats, gloves, scarfs, coats – you could hardly move! We took for granted school text books/ jotters/books to borrow/ books for homework, with parents only providing stationery requirements. We completed secondary education to between 16 and 18 depending on your exam results! Next step further education- University, college, traineeship, vocational training, armed forces etc. But now there is a monetary cost- there is transport to and from facilities; student accommodation, text books, maybe uniforms, extra clothes, “pocket money” etc.! “So you want to study”? “Well you better get out there and get a job in your spare time, don’t expect us to pay it all”!! Sound familiar, I bet it does! Living in the UK/Australia/Canada/USA finding a part time job was fairly easy. Even though we were instructed / ordered to work to subsidise the costs, our parents at least one of them would be working, and not see our further education jeopardised. Emphasis “Education = Job= Future prosperity” Now where is all this leading? To the Third R = Rotary!! Rotary clubs are International and many have “Education” as one of their primary projects. Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset, a small but very active club, our main focuses are supporting schools, health and hygiene, and water for the Balinese people. We find and help communities and families where help is most needed.

The Education system in Bali is not free, and for many the monetary costs is prohibitive, so many children just do not go to school. Before a child can go to school they require a full backpack comprising: 4 school uniforms (this applies all over the island) – regular, batik, sports and scouts, each uniform comprising several pieces. 1 pair school shoes. School supplies- pens/pencils/ coloured pencils/ruler/ eraser/ jotters for language and numeracy, text books, drawing book. All of which have to be replaced periodically. Add on water bottles/ lunch boxes, filled each day! Then there may be additional financial costs depending on the school –teacher’s fees, extra class fees, building fees. As the child progresses through school grades the costs increase, and middle and high school become even more prohibitive. Going to University a child either needs sponsorship or parents who are financially able to pay. With practically no Government assistance how are the people to manage? Many live on a day to day basis, earnings can be as low as 1 Million RP = $100 a year!! I mentioned at the beginning, that many of us would remember getting an evening/weekend job to help pay our further education. That too is not an option here, there does not exist those kind of opportunities and for many families especially those living in the high mountainous areas , it is hard enough for an adult to get work. So this is where our 3rd R –Rotary comes in, with sponsorship of many educational projects. A proposal will be submitted, with full details of cost, who will benefit and ongoing sustainability. It can be from a member of any Rotary club or other organisation, and this is discussed by the Project committee and if they consider it viable will put it to the vote of members. Then funding has to be found- this could come from our funds, District or Global Grants or even from a joint project with another Rotary club. The Roteracts- the 18-30 branch of Rotary are young people working hard, often with their focus on schools/ education especially primary school level. In Ubud there is a very active Roteract Club of Ubud, with many education projects, with Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset assisting with the funding. They have a mobile library initiative whereby funding assists with the provision of books for libraries, writing material , paper and pens for primary school children. Library areas – shelves, seating, pleasant environment, are set up . As little as US$ 650.00 can provide writing material and pencils for about 1,500 students! So if 10 people donated US$65 each think of the benefits!!

The Roteracts have since the evacuation of people due to the activity of Gunung Agung, commenced a project to teach children at evacuation centres in Sukawati. In co-operation with the UNMAS University they are running a 3 month project every Friday morning. They are teaching the children English, reading and fun activities and helping to keep the children focused. Other organisations may approach a Rotary club requesting funding or sponsorship. Bali Children’s Project is one such organisation who provide sponsorship for children from elementary right through to University level. Bali Children’s Project requested monetary help form Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset; and they have recently thanked us for the support of their school sponsorship programme. 20 students can now go to school and are funded for 1 year. Without this funding – US$2,000, those 20 students would not be going to school! Of course there are many children on the waiting list and like all “yayasans” (NGO) are constantly appealing for funding! Education is not just about the 3 “Rs”, it also encompasses health and hygiene education just as important as reading, ( w) riting, and (a) rithmetic! If we do not have healthy children then there will not be healthy adults and for the island to move forward and grow there is so much education needed…. If you feel you could contribute/help or just donate, our

small but very friendly club meets twice a month in Ubud. You are very welcome to come along as a “visitor” enjoy social interaction, a drink or a meal , listen/ask questions, and you just never know….this may be for you! Please email : info@rotarybaliubudsunset.org for times/ dates/ locations and contacts. I thank you for taking the time to read this article, Written by Renee Heaton, member Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset.

25 For the Marginalized Women of Indonesia there is Hope by Shari For young marginalized women growing up in Indonesia today, they face a strong gender bias, in trying to get educated, gain a skill and find quality employment. The Bali WISE (WISE = Women of Indonesia Skills Education) program by Role Foundation was started in 2007 to help the exploited women working in the seaweed farming along Bali’s east coast. These seaweed farms have since disappeared under a mass of development. Each year Bali WISE program takes 120 young women from some of the poorest families, orphanages and children’s foundations, providing them with the opportunity to be educated and trained in a skill that will help them to support themselves, their families and progress to a future that they can control.

It is a well-known fact that the quickest way to break the poverty cycle for families and community is through skilling up marginalized women. Every three months thirty young ladies are selected after an entry exam, interview and background check to ensure they really do come from the financially challenged. These young women are mostly aged between eighteen and twenty three. They live on campus to assure their safety for three months, where they are given a basic work and life skill education, dormitory style accommodation, three meals a day, uniforms, transport, education materials. This three month basic work and life skills includes: English training, women’s health, family planning, work place and women’s rights, and basic work skills and life skills. They’re also given a stipend of 700.000 Rupiah a month to send to their family if needed to avoid the family trying to entice their daughters home to work and help the family, taking the pressure off so they can study. At the end of three months the young women are asked to choose a career: front office and accounting, spa therapist, cooks assistant, waitress, housekeeping, retail sales assistant or admin tour and travel. Then they are sent out to various locations for on the job training in five star hotels, tour and travel companies, retail chain or a spa school. This is why learning English is vital to their future. During this additional three month apprenticeship period their stipend is increased to 900.000 Rupiah in case they need to rent a motorbike for their work. They also study at the campus three nights per week and on Saturdays where they are taught CV writing, interviewing and employer expectations and always trying to improve their English.

C/E/G-8 Nov. 17

Before the second three month period of training is finished the girls are strongly encouraged to secure work. The Bali WISE program has a 87% rate of successful placement in quality employment. Bali WISE does it’s best to help them find work. For many this is their first job. After this 6 month full time course these young ladies have transformed from high school girls to young women with self-esteem. I visited the Bali Wise facilities at Siligita, Nusa Dua last week and was given a tour and met some of the students, teachers and education staff. The students were all polite and shy. Their dormitory upstairs is a little crowded with thirty bunk-beds squeezed into the room. But everything was clean and tidy with some of the beds displaying a cuddly stuffed animal for their comfort, giving the bed a homey touch. Downstairs is the kitchen area where meals are prepared and where the girls eat their meals. Two kittens were lounging in the area and a friendly black Bali dog greeted me. I was told that a few of the students had found injured animals on the street and brought them back to the Foundation where they were adopted. The pets gave the Foundation a friendly home feel. At the other campus at Sawangan, up from the Hilton Hotel, for middle aged women whose way of gaining an income has been dashed by over development and the environment degradation of the local fishing industry Bali WISE runs it’s Women’s Business Development program. Weaving Futures is the reestablishment of traditional weaving on the Bukit. The women create beautiful traditional scarves which they sell to make an income for themselves. All of the cotton used in weaving is organic and the dyes come from local plants. A snail farm, plant nursery and aqua culture businesses are also under development.

Come out to support the Charity dinner on November 25 at Peppers Restaurant in Seminyak with an auction of fabulous prizes with proceeds going to BALI WISE PROGRAMS. C/E/G-22 Nov. 17

Factory Daughters by Diane L. Wolf The commercialization of agriculture, increasing landlessness and the exploitation of an expanding labor class are the overriding themes of Factory Daughters.

small. Instead, the reasons were social and economic, i.e. to be with friends, to seek higher social status and to avoid the hard work, heat and the dark complexions that come with working in the fields.

Through the stories of individual women striving for independence, the author of this groundbreaking study clearly identifies and explains the unbelievably complex dynamics of class, gender and agrarian change wrought by industrialized capitalism in rural Java.

*Daughters take on factory jobs to have money to spend on themselves. Expenditures were often self-centered, even frivolous: long pants, cosmetics, bar of “luxury” scented bathing soap and savings in the arisan (rotating saving association).

What is missing in most global academic surveys of factory labor is that the lives of the workers themselves are missing. Wolf takes the reader inside the very households where Javanese women live and onto the factories floors where they work, revealing the contradictions, constraints and profound changes in their lives as they seek income from non-agricultural activities in order to survive.

*Protest about injustice or unsafe conditions which cause injury or death are often expressed by the worker’s only weapons: non-capitalist, passive aggressive but typically Javanese daughterly ways. They faint, succumb to mass hysteria and have seizures at the appearance of ghosts roaming the factory. Dukun (shaman) are sometimes called to exorcize evil spirits after accidents had occurred.

Wolf’s book is a blistering indictment of the Suharto regime when the government and factory owners flaunted labor laws that had been put in place for the protection of female workers. No other study deals exclusively with this subject in the Indonesian context. Almost comically repulsive is the venality of lurah (village heads) and carik (village secretary) – often ex-army or ex-police – in the buying and selling of land to factories.

*Female employment has had a profound effect on the marriage patterns of women. Employment also increased the financial autonomy and level of control that factory women have over the choice of marriage partners. Factory employment frequently lengthens the period before a woman’s marriage. Young rural female factory workers are more likely to choose their marriage partners than those engaged in traditional village labor.

Wolf’s research methods are a telling indication of the depth of her enquiry - 250 households in the pre-computer era without a tape recorder or questionnaire. Living in rat-scurrying dormitories reminiscent of scenes out of Marx’s Das Kapital, she and her Javanese assistants socialized at village food stalls, interviewed workers, managers and owners, examined personnel files and health records. In Java’s highly patriarchal society, husbands often distrusted leaving Wolf alone with her subjects, answering all questions directed at their wives and even accompanying them on walks in the author’s attempt to speak with the woman privately.

Indonesia’s still struggles mightily with workplace safety, widespread child labor and keeping children in school. Work conditions and labor practices are in many ways similar – and in some ways worse - than was the case 30 years ago. This was tragically spotlighted in October when three 14-year-old girls, along with 47 other workers, were burned to death in a fireworks factory explosion in Tangerang outside Jakarta. The girls’ parents could not afford to send their daughters to school beyond 6th grade, so they took full-time jobs packaging fireworks for Rp45,000 per day.

From the outset, I read the book for instruction and entertainment from the standpoint of a non-academic, less for its sociological insights and more for its portraits of tough and independent women torn from the pages of life. I skipped the dense empirical analysis, tables, statistical charts and paragraphs thick with scholarly shop talk like “occupational multiplicity” and “semi-proleterianized households.” Not particularly light reading, I mined the book for its nuggets. Buried in the author’s analysis of data are detailed and highly personal profiles made even more eloquent and credible by Wolf’s spare literary style. The book’s very first heart wrenching story is of Rini who started to work in factories after she dropped out of school at 15 in 1978 is followed by many brief, dramatic stories of Tuminem, Suniwati, Mbak Temo, etc. most ending tantalizingly with the reader yearning to know what lay ahead. What the author learned in the course of her research was not at all what she expected or was prepared for. Wolf assumed that Java’s factory daughters were Javanese versions of working daughters in the early decades of Europe’s industrialization. It didn’t take long before many of her misconceptions began to unravel. Some of her findings are enlightening and even startling:

Photos in the book of spinning factories are reminiscent of factory floors at the turn of the 20th C. in England or in New York’s Triangle Shirtwaist Factory before the 1911 fire. Strikingly different from contemporary scenes of factory labor in Java, not a single jilbab head covering is evident. This was a more innocent time when Western dress was considered modern before the puritanical values of Wahabism had yet taken hold in Indonesia.

C/E/G-22 Nov. 17

In conclusion, I thought Factory Daughters would be drier and overly academic, but it turned out to be carefully argued, eyeopening and unexpectedly readable. Without the overuse of sociological terminology, Wolf takes on a complex area of ethnographic study with style and zeal that overturns many of her own preconceived notions about impoverished rural peasant and factory life. In Wolf’s empathetic and relentlessly systematic research, we peer intimately into the lives of spirited young women and are ultimately able to understand the impact that factory work has on poor women and their families. Factory Daughters is an important contribution to the comparative analysis of changing gender roles in Indonesia, of women’s work and household economies in developing countries and of the increasing landlessness, environmental damage and other tumultuous life-changing processes of industrialization that are happening all over the world.

*Industrial capitalism in rural Java is fueled by the subsistence production of poor, near landless households. Knowing well that worker’s wages are insufficient to cover full subsistence needs, factory owners deliberately choose a site with a full awareness of local conditions to keep wages down. Families, by providing lodging, services, free food and other goods to keep their daughters afloat, help keep factory wages down and factory profits up.

Factory Daughters: Gender, Household Dynamics, and Rural Industrialization in Java by Diane L. Wolf, University of California Press 1992, ISBN: 978-052-008-6579, paperback, 338 pages.

*Factory workers do not come from the very poorest families but from families that are able to get along with little or no return from a daughter’s labor. However, daughters contributed indirectly to family income by taking care of their own cash needs.

27 Musings on Origins and Roots

by Ines Wynn

The Indonesian penchant to inquire about someone’s origins is embedded in the culture. Especially in Bali, where the class you belong to dictates the choice of language you use and the physical position you are entitled to. On a regular basis we hear the ubiquitous Balinese greeting ‘Dari mana? Mau ke mana?’ – Where are you coming from? Where are you going? It is so ingrained in daily exchanges and was totally encapsulated by the focus theme ‘Sangkan Paraning Dumadi’ of this year’s Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF). It was succinctly translated into plain English as ‘Origins’. However, this translation conceals the deeper intrinsic meaning of the festival theme in the original language. Janet DeNeefe, Founder and Director of the UWRF explains that the theme is drawn from the Hindu philosophy ‘Sangkan Paraning Dumadi’ which speaks of our eternal connection to where we have come from, and to where we will ultimately return. By extension it considers the origins of the elements that shape us, the things we carry with us through life, and the things that draw us back. What does it mean to the majority of expats when we talk about origins or roots? When expats talk about roots, we think of the ‘home’ culture we came from, our nationality, our native language and the various elements that sets our ethnic background apart from another’s. We carry certain elements with us wherever we go, like our favorite food recipes, music and dance, literature and art, our physical characteristics, our body language, style of clothing and our overall behavior. These are the elements we contribute to the wider community into which we migrate and integrate, be it a totally different culture or one similar to our own. In so doing we become part of the melting pot phenomenon and share in an expansion of culture. By amalgamation we create a new level to our origins, imbued with elements from other cultures or subcultures and it is this new expression of identity that we bequeath to our children. Leaving our roots and integrating into another culture more often than not engenders a loss of familiarity or closeness with our actual origins. When we live abroad, we are removed from directly experiencing the ongoing evolution of our home culture, the swells, surges and undulations that ripple through the fabric of the left-behind society. These changes no longer have a direct impact on our new lives. Some of us experience this as a loss of culture or a watering down of the close ties that once bound us more intimately to the homeland, the ‘old country’. We can forget or deny but never negate our origins. We always carry a remnant everywhere. As such we need to ask ourselves if we are good ambassadors for our origins or roots. Like it or not many people are judged by their nationalities or original culture and its peculiar characteristics can be perceived as good, cool, funny, awkward and even less positive by other people. Sometimes our nationalities become the butt of bar-room jokes. We all heard the one about the German mechanics, Italian workers, British cops, French chefs, Irish storytellers and Polish farmers. Sometimes the peculiarities that set us apart or make us stand out stem from our religious adherence, our physical appearance or particular mannerisms. What is acceptable behaviour in one culture may look abhorrent to another. Some hand gestures or facial expressions are A-OK in one environment but positively insulting in another. The inevitable result is that there is a lot of misunderstanding going on and from there, animosity or contempt is born.

C/E/I-22 Nov 17

Whenever there is a melting pot, sensitivity, understanding and appreciation of another’s culture is paramount to successful integration and mutual respect. It behooves us then, as a representative of our own unique culture, to show the most positive aspects of it and invite dialogue with others to clarify the elements that may cause misinterpretation and distrust.Incidentally, the essential meaning of Sangkan Paraning Dumadi is also recognised by other religions and philosophies. Islam teaches the Sangkan Paraning Dumadi philosophy when celebrating Eid al-Fitr. Indonesian Muslims prefer to spend the Idul Fitri holidays with family and do all they can to go on ‘mudik’, the annual trek to their home villages, to celebrate their homecoming. When going home, they say, we are required to understand where we came from, and where our lives will go on from there. Understanding of the philosophy Sangkan Paraning Dumadi teaches us about our life’s purpose and beyond. Other philosophies call it the science of the way home or ‘what is coming will return to that origin’. As an analogy, think of a cage with a bird. You consist of two elements: your body as the vessel and your mind/spirituality as the content. Your body and your mind have their own, separate origins and also have their own way back. When the cage is ultimately damaged, the contents will be released. Your body is created from elements of nature, earth, wind and fire which ultimately will return to nature again. Your consciousness or mind is your essence, the domain of God, the universe or whatever your concept is of that essence above and beyond us. It will return to “the one who made you”. The biblical quotation ‘From ash you are made and to ash you will return’ also refers to the round-trip theme and reminds us how we were created and where we are ultimately going back to. Here the focus is more on the impermanence of the physical body. Presumably the spirit will escape and ultimately return as well to the wild yonder. Obviously you can interpret the philosophy of Sangkan Paraning Dumadi within your own framework of reference. As I write this, snatches of ‘I’m going home...’ the eponymous song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show drift through my consciousness. ‘Cause I’ve seen blue skies through the tears In my eyes And I realize, I’m going home’ C/E/I-22 Nov 17

Say What? Question: My partner and I have been together 10+ years. We get along, have fun, and love each other immensely, but we no longer have sex. Part of the reason is that we each have experienced some medical issues over the past few years, but we also just don’t seem to have much sexual desire. It isn’t as if one of us is asking for it and being turned down. Neither of us initiates or even mentions it. It’s as if we haven’t done it in so long that we’ve sort of “forgotten how.” I don’t mean forgotten where things go; we’ve forgotten how to get into the headspace of physical intimacy. We’re at the stage of thinking seriously about having kids, which - for starters - requires sex. But I would like it to be fun and sexy, and not just about making a baby. Personally, I think part of the reason sex is awkward for me may be because I have never had an orgasm. Sex feels good, I enjoy it when it’s happening, but I generally feel “unfulfilled” at the end, as if I’ve come close to the pinnacle and missed it. I feel ashamed around never having climaxed and guilty for not making my partner feel as if he has “done it right” for me. Can you possibly give us some advice on how two committed people in a long-term relationship can get back into the swing of it? Dr. ZZ: When long-married couples are polled about keeping the sexy times going in a long-term relationship, they generally say similar things: You just have to do it. If you wait until you are in the mood, you never will. Approach it like exercise. The moments when you would rather wrap yourself in the cozy blanket and be by yourself without touching someone, whom you may find rather irritating or possibly misshapen, may be the very moments when you can actually reach out instead, cop a feel, and get things going. It’s easy to have fun, sexy times when you’re dating. Everything’s new, there’s the thrill of exploring a new partner and having them explore you, and you don’t have a decade of history weighing you down. After ten years of

unsexy day-to-day life, replete with doing the dishes, taking out the trash and getting the car repaired, etc. - not to mention getting each other through surgeries, which no doubt forged a stronger bond between you but probably didn’t do much for you romantically - it’s harder to recapture that thrill. There is a profound satisfaction that comes from being together that long and caring for each other that deeply, but satisfaction and passion are not the same thing - nor are they mutually exclusive. Clearly you still care about making each other feel good, but if sex has fallen off your radar, it’s going to take some effort to get it back on. This can – and should – be fun, but you can’t just sit back and wait for it to happen on its own. What I’m about to say may sound like cheesy advice column hokum, but seriously: schedule a date. Many couples have standing once-a-week or once-a-month dates when they devote themselves to having a romantic time with no worrying about work, or what needs doing around the house, or anything else. It’s time to simply get out of your usual routine, to take pleasure in each other, and to reconnect with why you fell in love in the first place. Maybe you could go out for a nice dinner or simply stay at home with a bottle of wine and good music. Aim for the sorts of things you did when you first started dating, and do

NC/CE/G-25 Oct. 17

regularly whatever is going to put you in a happier, more romantic head-space. The idea is not to approach this with any pressure to have fun, sexy times now, but as a mutual opportunity to have fun and focus on making each other feel good. Then, once you’re having a bit of a cozy, romantic time together, and you’ve let yourselves relax a little, it becomes time for one of you to make the first move. Cuddling, kissing, and foot rubs or back rubs can be a great lead-in. Start there, and let your fingers wander. Or you could try something more direct, like taking your clothes off and going for it. Watch some porn if that gets you in the mood; find ways to surprise each other. There are all sorts of ways for this to happen, but again, you need to make it happen. (It takes effort on both your parts to make this work.) If your husband isn’t moving things towards sexiness, then you need to take the lead yourself. Go for the gusto. If this doesn’t work the first time, don’t worry. Have another date. The whole point is to enjoy yourselves, which brings me to the other part of your question: your inability to orgasm. If I could magically solve this concern for you, I absolutely would, but no advice columnist has that power. If it is a problem for you, I suggest that you consult with a therapist about it. What I can suggest, however, is when you’re trying to get back in the habit of having sex with your husband, don’t view orgasms as the goal. There’s no surer way to kill a sexy mood than to worry that you’re doing it wrong. Don’t let anyone else’s narrative of how sex is supposed to go get in the way of your fun. Feeling good is what you’re after, and wherever that relaxed, cozy feeling takes you, it’s all good.

Under the shadow of Mount Agung rumbling in East Bali, the Ubud Wr i t e r s & R e a d e r s Festival successfully delivered its 14th year this 25–29 October, reinforcing its vital role within the Balinese and Indonesian community. Despite Bali’s tourism industry suffering significant impacts from Mount Agung’s seismic activity throughout October, the Festival saw an audience attendance of 25,000 across its 200+ events, injecting an estimated AUD$1,000,000 into the local economy. “After facing significant challenges in this year’s campaign, to see thousands of people flocking across the Festival’s program to attend packed sessions was such an incredible feeling,” said Founder & Director Janet DeNeefe. “Although we did see a small drop in ticket sales – which were down about 5% from the previous year – the overall feeling is one of great success. That so many audiences and artists alike braved the circumstances to come together to support the event, and the local community, is the best outcome we could have hoped for.” The Festival also hosted a special fundraising evening for communities continuing to be affected by Mount Agung, with donations from attendees totaling AUD$1,500. This, along with critically-needed supplies for the evacuation camps, will be donated to local NGO Kopernik’s emergency response efforts. A reflection of the local challenges being faced on the island, the Festival’s program was strongly focused on Bali, with dozens of discussions, performances and exhibitions dissecting the island’s tourism industry, environmental concerns, language, art, culture and society. One of the most influential Balinese authors of her generation,

Oka Rusmini, and Balinese writer, theatre activist and Founder of multiple cultural organizations, Cokorda Sawitri, were among the Festival’s most impassioned speakers, speaking on the patriarchal nature of Bali’s traditional culture and women’s empowerment. “I want my children to have choices,” said Rusmini. Indonesia’s largest literary event, the Festival also brought together some of the nation’s most celebrated artists from across the archipelago, including prolific Indonesian poet Joko Pinurbo, one of the nation’s first female Muslim standup comedians Sakdiyah Ma’ruf, Indonesia’s leading travel writer Trinity, and French-Indonesia animated film director Pierre Coffin, among a host of others. During a discussion of some of the most exciting dance, literature and visual art being created in Indonesia today, featuring rising literary star Intan Paramaditha, leading Indonesian dancer choreographer Eko Supriyanto, and local painter Kun Adnyana, Paramaditha asked the pertinent question, “What is the role of art in promoting tolerance?” These diverse speakers and champions of Indonesian ingenuity thrilled audiences on and off the stage. Their heroic status in the eyes of local audiences – which represented 49% of attendees – cements the Festival’s role in celebrating Indonesia’s incredibly diverse cultural landscape, and in bringing the nation’s authors, artists and activists to the world. The Festival was also honored to present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Indonesia’s first feminist writer Nh. Dini, for her extraordinary contribution to Indonesian literature. Upon receiving the Award at the Gala Opening Ceremony she commented, “I have been writing in this world for 60 years. Writing is my world. I feel extremely blessed to be receiving this Award after all this time.”

Along with the incisive Bali and Indonesia focused sessions, the 50th anniversary of ASEAN generated fervent discussions about regional politics. The UWRF was held directly after the the Asia Pacific Writers and Translators (APWT) conference in North Bali, prompting Malaysian author Bernice Chauly to state, “The problem is we’re not reading or translating each other. We’re fractured nations because of this. For ASEAN to come together we need to read each other.” Uniting 150 speakers from 30 nations, this year’s UWRF was its most culturally diverse yet, highlighting its role as the region’s leading space for meaningful cultural exchange. As APWT Director Sanaz Fotouhi commented, “We read in solitude, we write in solitude, so gatherings like UWRF are extremely important to move out of this solitude.” Among the other international guests on this year’s lineup, UK crime writer Ian Rankin, Canada’s newest literary star Madeleine Thien, Wild Swans author Jung Chang, Malaysian human rights activist and former UN Person of the year, Marina Mahathir, bestselling British historian Simon Winchester, Australian climatologist Tim Flannery and award-winning memoirist Robert Dessaix, and Latin America’s leading author, Héctor Abad, tackled everything from migration to climate change, women’s rights to classical music, writing for children to volcanic eruptions. “The UWRF was born out of struggle, and this year’s Festival proves that after 14 years we are stronger than ever. I think we’re the most resilient Festival in the world,” commented DeNeefe. “We are proud of the role we play not only here in Bali, but also in Indonesia,” DeNeefe continued. “We shine the spotlight on this enormous and yet little known nation’s writers, artists, thinkers and performers, in the hope that the world will one day appreciate their talent, just as we do. “I want to say thank you to all the Indonesian speakers who made this year’s Festival such a triumph for our literature and arts communities, and for our beloved island of Bali. The results are in: 96% of our audiences who came to share in the powerful, thought-provoking, and magical space they created said they would return again. We’re looking forward to welcoming you back from 24–28 October, 2018.” Copyright © 2017 Bali Advertiser You can read all past articles of Ubud Writers & Readers Festival at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Local News Two held over murder of elderly Dutch man in Bali Two men have been arrested over the murder of an elderly Dutch man whose decomposing body was found at his home on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali. The corpse of Robert Gilhooad, 80, was found on November 3 at his rental property in Jimbaran, a resort area in the southern part of the island. An autopsy concluded the Dutch expatriate had been murdered, said policeman Aris Purwanto, the region’s criminal investigative chief. “He had injuries to the left of his head,” he told AFP, adding that the perpetrator had used a steel object. Two suspects have been detained in connection with the crime, Purwanto said, without providing names. Police believe there was a monetary motive for killing Gilhooad, a long-term Bali resident who lived alone. The murder is the second in as many months in Jimbaran, a fishing village famous for its seafood restaurants. An elderly Japanese couple were found slashed and burned beyond recognition at their home on September 4. Petty crime is common on Bali, a popular tourist destination known for its tropical climate and palm-fringed beaches, but grisly murders are rare. [Expatica.com November 12, 2017] Bali set to shut up shop to Aussie bikies Bali has signalled it could be about to shut its doors to Australian bikies after the national president of the Finks was told this week he was not welcome on the holiday island because of his links to a “dangerous” gang. Former Perth resident Kosh Radford, aka Koshan Rashidi, arrived in Bali on Wednesday night with his wife, infant child and mother-in-law, but was immediately stopped by immigration officers and refused entry. He was sent straight back to Sydney on the next available flight. Bali’s immigration chief Ari Budijanto yesterday confirmed Mr Radford had been banned from entering the island, saying it was his gang links that prompted the decision. “Foreigners that are allowed to enter Indonesia are those who are beneficial for Indonesia,” Mr Budijanto said. “Foreigners who are rejected from entering Indonesia are foreigners that allegedly could causes restlessness and disturb national security.” The decision is likely to cause concerns for many WA-based bikies whose gangs have been heavily expanding their operations into Bali in recent years. The Rebels, Finks and Bandidos are just some of the clubs that have established permanent “chapters” on the island. Some senior members are also believed to have invested heavily in real estate and local businesses such as bars and nightclubs. Authorities in Australia refused to say yesterday if they had tipped off their Indonesian counterparts about Mr Radford’s travel plans. “Any decision to deny a person’s entry into a country is a matter for authorities in that country,” an Australian Federal Police spokesman said. But a document shown in Bali that appeared to be from Australian officials advises of the time and flight number that Mr Radford was due to arrive on. “Finks National President Kosh Radford ... is departing Australia today, Wednesday 8 November 2017 on QF43 arriving Denpasar at 8.20pm,” the document said. Balinese authorities were also supplied with a picture of Mr Radford to help identify him when he arrived. [Perth Now November 10, 2017] Lightning strike instantly kills two surfers A single lightning strike in Bali instantly killed two surfers on their boards, authorities in Indonesia say. Belgian-born former soccer pro Denis Dasoul was killed along with his surfing instructor at Batu Bolong beach in Canggu on Sunday when the bolt of lightning hit as they were finishing a training session, 9 News reports. Witnesses say the men, who had been sitting up on their boards, fell into the water after the lightning strike, which turned parts of their bodies blue, apparently from bruising. The Mirror describes the day as gray and drizzly, but reports the bolt was an unexpected one. Police say both men were “dead on the spot.” Dasoul, who played for soccer clubs in Belgium, Austria, and Italy during his pro career, had been living in Melbourne, Australia, and working as a project manager since 2011. “Denis was a marvelous person who lived every day like it was the last,” says a friend, journalist Pascal Scime, per the Herald Sun. “He was always smiling and joking. A very nice guy. He was in Bali for holidays with his girlfriend.” The beach is described online as one of the best places to learn to surf in Bali. [Fox News November 8, 2017] Threat of Mt Agung eruption downgraded Mt Agung, an active volcano and the highest point on the island of Bali, Indonesia, has had its threat of eruption downgraded, bringing relief to hundreds of thousands of Balinese residents and tour operators. The volcano, located approximately 60km north-east of Sanur, had its alert status raised in September following a series of tremors in the surrounding area, peaking at over 1,000 per day according to reports. As many as 150,000 residents were evacuated from the local area, and tourist hotspots throughout the popular holiday island have suffered huge losses in the wake of international travel advisories, and fears that Denpasar airport may close as a result of an ash cloud caused by the eruption. According to the Bali Hotel and Restaurant Association, at least 5,000 October bookings were cancelled as a result of the increased threat level, accounting for a 20 per cent loss of business to the island, which relies heavily on travel and tourism to support the economy. As a result of the original warning and subsequent 12km exclusion zone, some dive spots were unavailable, including Tulamben, home of the world-famous wreck of the USAT Liberty. The exclusion zone has now been reduced to 6km around the volcano, meaning that Tulamben is open again, although some dive centres have not returned immediately and are continuing to monitor the situation. Other locations such as Padang Bai, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are all well outside the exclusion zone (and 30 mins offshore from Bali, in the case of Lembongan and Penida) and have always been deemed as safe to travel. Amed is also well outside the exclusion zone, although some operators suspended trips there during the highest threat level. Local scientists continue to monitor the volcano, and updates are provided by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation on a regular basis. Many residents whose homes were in the original exclusion zone have been allowed to return home. Dive centres and other tour operators in the region started the #IaminBaliNow campaign to draw attention to the fact that, despite the threat from Mt Agung, Bali is perfectly safe to travel and for most people, it’s business as usual. [Dive Magazine November 14, 2017 Acrobat lands in Taiwan for surgery on medevac after breaking neck from equipment failure at Canggu beach club The American acrobat who broke her neck after a performance in Bali went terribly wrong, has finally arrived in Taiwan on medevac so she can get operated on by specialists. Aerial acrobatic performer “Sam Panda” dropped down 13 feet and landed directly on her head and neck when equipment failed and a hoop suddenly plummeted to the ground at a performance in Canggu on Oct. 26 at Finns Beach Club. The entire horrifying moment was caught on video. In addition to breaking her neck-in several placesthe woman also got a shard of bone stuck in her spinal cord, preventing her from walking. Now, 12 days since the incident, Panda has made it to Taiwan for her surgery, according to an update posted on Wednesday to the GoFundMe page that’s raised over US$58,000 to help fund her medevac and pay her mounting medical costs. “After probably the longest 12 days of our beloved Sam’s life, she has flown and arrived safely in Taiwan. She is scheduled for surgery and so will be offline for a bit due to travel, surgery, and recovery,” reads an update on the crowdfunding page, which is now titled “Rig fails, Sam breaks neck, HELP!”. The whole issue of Panda’s insurance status has been complicated. Her crowdfunding page originally stated that she was insured by her employer but the insurance did not cover the medevac. Later, in an update posted on Sunday to the page, it was written that Panda was being evacuated to Taiwan where she could use her husband’s insurance, as he is Taiwanese. However, on Monday it was discovered that Panda was no longer insured in Taiwan because of her time spent out of the country. “Unfortunately because she left the country to perform for almost an entire year, her marriage visa expired and was not renewed because she was not in Taiwan to do it. Because of this, she DOES NOT have medical insurance in Taiwan until the marriage visa is reinstated. “Because the surgery will need to be done immediately, Sam and her husband will have to pay for this out of pocket as well,” the update explains. A message from the patient herself was also posted to the update, thanking everyone for being so “amazing and supportive.” “To my friends and family, I love you all very much. Thanks for being so insanely awesome. “The road to recovery finally begins today. I love you all,” Panda wrote before going into surgery. [Coconuts Bali November 8, 2017

Indonesia, Morocco Step Up Cooperation Ahead of King’s Visit Indonesia will host King Mohammed VI on Dec. 7-8, during the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF-X) gathering, where the monarch will deliver the keynote speech. According to Syarief Syamsuri, Indonesia’s ambassador to Morocco and Mauritania, this is the first visit by a Morocco king since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1960. “King Mohammed VI’s visit will be the first by Morocco’s head of government. There hasn’t been a return visit since President Sukarno’s visit to Morocco in 1960. ... We are expecting stronger ties between the two countries, and we need an agreement between the president [Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo] and King Mohammed VI for future priorities in our cooperation,” Syarief said, adding that the cooperation will focus on trade, investment and halal tourism. According to a statement by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, the Indonesian government and the Kingdom of Morocco “will focus on developing wind and solar-based energy.” [Jakarta Globe November 13, 2017] Bad behaviour sees two air passengers denied boarding by security officials in Bali A number of poorly behaved passengers have recently been denied board on departing international flights from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport. NusaBali reports that the two passengers who failed to fly from Bali were a drunken Russian tourist and an Indian national who made a jest about a bomb during the embarkation process. The Russian traveler, Pavel Plakhutin (34), was taken into custody by airport security on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, while preparing to depart on Qatar Airways QR-965 bound for Doha. Officials deemed the unruly Russian was too inebriated to board the aircraft without posing a safety threat to himself and other passengers. In a separate earlier incident on Monday, November 6, 2017, an Indian national Shyamsukha Aditya was also taken into custody by security official when he uttered the phrase “she look bomb” during the security screening process in Terminal 2 of Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. When security personnel heard the word “bomb” the reaction was instantaneous with Shyamsukha taken into custody and denied boarding on AirAsia QZ-510 bound for India. During the resulting interviews with police and security officials, Shyamsukha was accompanied by a representative from the Indian Consulate in Bali. Officials assured the man would be released into the custody of the Consul if they can determine that the word “bomb” was uttered in jest. Shyamsukha insists he was only praising the trendy fashion style of a fellow passenger when he said, “she look bomb.” [www.balidiscovery.com November 10, 2017] 250 Balinese Hindus climb Mount Agung to make ritual and animal offering to the volcanic crater On Thursday, November 2, 2017, some 235 Hindu devotees in Bali ignored danger zones in effect for the Mount Agung Volcano and climbed to the crater to make “Pakelem” sacrificial offerings of live animals to the Almighty - Ida Sang Hyang Widhi. Beginning the challenging climb before sunrise, the worshipper arrived at the crater’s rim at around 10:00 am with a buffalo sporting golden horns, a white goose and a chicken in tow to sacrifice to God. 7 priests, led by Jero Mangku Ada, conducted the required religious rites. What was already a consecrated and solemn atmosphere, took on added air of mystery when an estimated 250 wild monkeys joined the procession to the crater, far removed from the lower, more verdant elevations usually preferred by the primates. As reported by Balipost.com, while the group of Balinese chanted prayers and made offerings, those in attendance saw steam and smoke seep from the crater while rumblings, said to resemble the sound of a passing jet aircraft, were sounding from the crater. A sulfuric odor was much in evidence as the worshippers neared the volcano’s peak, causing many to don facemasks to lessen the stench. Once in place and praying on the volcano’s rim, the prayerful were buffeted continually by strong cold winds blowing at the 3,031-meter high altitude of the Mountain’s peak. [www.balidiscovery.com November 3, 2017] Bali designer sunnies thief Thomas Harman headed home A Perth man who admitted stealing a pair of designer sunglasses in Bali is on his way home. Thomas Harman couldn’t wipe the smile off his face as he headed to the airport to fly back to Perth on Monday. The 31-year-old was facing up to five years in Bali’s notorious Kerobokan Prison where some of Indonesia’s most dangerous criminals are housed - after taking a pair of $400 Gucci sunglasses from a duty-free store at Denpasar Airport in July. Mr Harman had argued he simply forgot he was holding the sunglasses when he exited the store, because he was nervous for his upcoming flight. After three months and 15 days behind bars awaiting sentencing, Mr. Harman says he is looking forward to just “chilling” back in Perth. “(I’m) over the world, over the moon, (laughs),” he said. “(The prison) was great, great art program, great people.” Mr Harman was sentenced to three months’ jail for the theft last week. Growing Social Media Engagement with Bali Buda Bali Buda is an island institution, with a chain of restaurants and shops that have been selling healthy food and wellness products since the 1990s. I recently spoke with Bali Buda’s Social Media Manager, who incidentally, is also the owner’s seventeen-year old daughter, Jasmine. Brenda Ritchmond, the owner, encourages her children to join her business in their particular areas of interests: the eldest sister manages the Sanur location and another sister, a keen baker, helps create new recipes for baked goods. Jasmine’s interests lie in social media, so she has assumed the role of running Bali Buda’s various social media channels, primarily the Facebook and Instagram accounts. LA: How did you start running the social media for Bali Buda? Jasmine: I started because I knew we didn’t have [a social media presence] and I was the social media gal in the family. I’ve been managing it and growing in organically.

LA: Tell me about any relationships you’ve built with bloggers or travel writers. Jasmine: Usually, they come to us for collaboration. Sometimes, you can create a friendship [or lasting collaboration]. Both of you can get something of benefit [from the relationship]. Bali Buda can get more views from their followers, crossing over [to our site.] LA: Do you pay bloggers?

Jasmine: It depends. If they’re here for the long run, sometimes we do. If they’re just passing through, and just want photos to share with their viewers, then sometimes we give them free meals.

LA: Do you find that building those relationships has increased your social media following?

Please contact 0815 5838 2888

Jasmine: Definitely. Especially, if has to do with giveaways.

LA: When you say you were the social media person, what do you mean by that?

LA: Do you do giveaways at Bali Buda?

Jasmine: I was the most active social media user in the family.

Jasmine: Not much on our accounts, but if bloggers want to do giveaways, we can help [promote them.]

LA: How did your Mom feel about you taking over the role, given your youth?

LA: What would you like to do with the Bali Buda social media in the future?

Jasmine: She had some doubts [initially]. So far, I’ve proved that I’m pretty all right with the role.

Jasmine: Grow a bigger engaged group of followers, as that’s a good marketing strategy in this [digital] era.

LA: What kind of successes have you had? What are you most proud of?

LA: Do people come into Bali Buda and give you feedback about your social media?

Jasmine: Reaching the 10,000 followers mark on Instagram. Growing the followers overall [on all the social media channels.]

Jasmine: It usually works the other way. They see the Instagram account and then come into Bali Buda because they’ve seen us there. Or Facebook.

LA: What do you focus on?

LA: What do you wish more people knew about Bali Buda?

Jasmine: I’m trying to get followers to have a conversation in the comments or focus on what they are interested in. Then they’re more active on the account. Also, the more engagement [you have with your followers], the more Instagram rewards you with [higher positioning]. They’ll give you more attention on their site. LA: What sort of questions do you ask people? Jasmine: The most simple ones. The most easily answerable questions, like, ‘What’s your favorite drink today?’ Or, ‘How are you doing?’ Or, ‘What kind of solution would you like to start?’ Very simple questions that will catch people’s eye and be easy to answer. LA: Do you tend to get certain types of feedback from your followers or do they ask questions all over the place? Jasmine: For more personal questions, they will privately message us. But most feedback is ‘Oh, I love your products and the info you give’ or they’ll be coming soon to Bali … many of our followers are tourists and are planning to visit our outlets when they come to Bali … they say they are excited about coming to visit us. LA: Do people leave feedback about specific feedback and products? Jasmine: Definitely. If I post about a certain product, they’ll tell us how much they love it. LA: Do you get people complaining on your social media feed? Jasmine: On Facebook, they will usually privately message us [with complaints] instead of [leaving negative comments].

LA: On your own, you are involved in youth development and environmental programs … like the Clean Up Bali initiatives. Is there cross over? Do you use Bali Buda as a platform to publicize your own environmental work? Jasmine: Usually, if the other organization will also publicize an event, then Bali Buda will do cross-promotion. LA: Do you use any social media analytical tools? Jasmine: Instagram has a new feature for its business accounts that will tell you where your followers are from, what gender and how much engagement and new followers you’ve gained the past week. LA: I know Facebook offers the same tools to its business accounts. So you primarily use the free analytical tools that Instagram and Facebook offer? Jasmine: Yes. LA: Do you do your social media posting in real time or do you use any type of scheduling service? Jasmine: Facebook has a scheduling service, which I use. Instagram doesn’t yet. With Instagram, I just post when I can or at times when you have the highest number of people using the site. LA: Do you see yourself making a career in social media? Jasmine: Yes, I’ve actually thought about it and I do know people who do this for a living. I could definitely do social media as a side job [regardless of what else I do in the future.]

LA: What are your favorite aspects of Bali Buda’s social media channels?

SOCIAL MEDIA BYTES

Jasmine: I love getting photos [of our products or stores] from travelers and bloggers, particularly the beautifully aesthetic photos that professional bloggers take … that’s my favorite part.
