TOKO BUKU Reviews of English language books on Indonesia
Handy Pocket Guide to Tropical Herbs & Spices If you’ve ever wandered around an Asian wet market and saw things that you don’t have any clue about or how they could possibly be used in cooking, Handy Pocket Guide to Tropical Herbs & Spices is the book for you. This useful, portable (though not exactly “pocket” size) reference introduces 50 herbs, spices and aromatics most commonly found in Southeast Asian cuisines. After a full-color two-page spread of herbs and spices, the rest of the book is devoted to the discussion of each plant. All entries are grouped according to botanical family in alphabetical order. The scientific name plus usually four common regional names are given, e.g. Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, Tagalog (Philippines), etc. Typically, one page of 3-4 paragraphs is devoted to each spice/herb along with a thumbnail close-up and a still life. There’s a basic, short review, the plant’s country or region of origin, how it’s cultivated and its preparation and use. Though it’s not a cookbook and can’t lie open on a counter, the names of dishes in which the spice or herb is featured are also provided. The color photos make for easy identification. The index includes the common English names and Latin scientific names but does not include where the spice is grown or in which cuisines it is used in. Indonesian regional cuisines are blends of the cultures of every ethnic group that ever invaded the country – Chinese, Indian, Spanish, Dutch, American. From the condensed, insightful two-page historical overview of spices from ancient times to the present, I learned a few unexpected facts: Pepper (merica) was once such a valuable spice in medieval Europe that it was literally sold by the grain. *Before the arrival of chilies from the Americas in the 16th century, peppercorns were the main source of spiciness in tropical Asian food. *Several indigenous spices that made the East Indies famous all over the world are themselves seldom used in Indonesian cooking. *Cloves, an essential ingredient
by Wendy Hutton
in Indonesian clove kretek cigarettes, has to be imported from Zanzibar to its original home because of the very high demand in its homeland. The book straightens out some common misconceptions and misnomers: The spice commonly sold in Indonesian markets as cinnamon is not true cinnamon but casia, a more strongly flavored and cheaper related species. *Filipinos confusingly call Indian Borage (daun kaming) oregano. *Spring onions are mistakenly called shallots in Western countries, even though they bear no resemblance to shallots. *Indonesian cooks translate daun salam as Bay Leaf, though there is no resemblance in appearance or flavor. *The Torch Ginger, a native of Java, is rarely found in Javanese cuisine. Studded throughout 60 pages of high-quality writing are small gems on gardening, buying, storing, cooking, substituting and other culinary and healthy-eating tips on how to make the most of these tasty flavorings that are sold in traditional markets loose and are generally fresher than those found in the West. *Buy whole spices whenever possible as the flavor of spices, which already have been ground to a powder, will diminish quickly. *To maximize the flavor and make them easier to grind, heat spices or herbs gently in a dry pan until they begin to smell fragrant (but remove from flame before
they change color). *Remove the seeds from chilies if you don’t want the dish to be too hot. *Galangal, the pungent, tangy member of the ginger family, is so obstinately tough that you need to either cut it into pieces or bruise it with the flat side of a cleaver first, then add it to the cooking pot. *Candlenuts (kemiri) contain a lot of oil and can become rancid quickly, so store them in a closed container in the fridge. *Garlic (bawang putih) not only has significant nutritive value, but also contains an antibiotic substance which inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi and helps reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels. *Ginger (jahe) is widely used throughout Asia to improve digestion and counteract nausea and vomiting. This engaging little book is for reading pleasure and enlightenment. Though not an exhaustive encyclopedia (which still has yet to be published!), the representative plants in Tropical Herbs & Spices cover all that are essential to the Indonesian kitchen. It does not contain all the plants that Asian purveyors have to offer and has only four recipes - a chutney, a sambal and three mouth-watering spice mixes. You’ll still need a proper regional cookbook to find more recipes, but this thin volume is fun and informative to read, its magic carpet of ingredients a “must” for lovers of tropical tastes. The Serfs Are Revolting Frederich Ebenezer Pump was a clever man. The chairman of the Upper Wallop Serf Club, he invented a device consisting of a pipe with a piston and operated by a handle which enabled the serfs to draw water from wells. Used all over the world the village pump has been the centre of community life since time immoral. Often the place where important matters of local interest are discussed but also where young damsels meet dirty old men under cover of darkness, the village pump has been the subject of a plethora of songs (mostly of the bawdy variety). Frederich’s great, great, great, great, grandson’s, cousin’s, uncle’s, husband’s, great, great, grandson, Cornelius Archibald Pump, was tinkering around in old Frederich’s garden shed one day when he came across a design for a rotating centrifugal water pump which old Fred had thoughtfully put aside until the electric motor was invented some 2 centuries later. This pump has become a ubiquitous design. It has an inlet and an outlet pipe and uses a rotating wheel (an impeller) with fins or vanes which uses centrifugal force to throw the water outwards with such force that it can push it along pipes. This clever device is used these days to mow down crowds of serfs when they are severely lacking in the gruntle department and become somewhat revolting. Water pumps are little heroes in our homes, they are generally very reliable working without attention often for years on end. They are inexpensive but an essential component in the systems that make our lives comfortable. Of course, these days pumps are driven by electric motors and, in addition to the rotating impeller, have several additional components to improve their performance:
8
Capacitor A capacitor is a clever little device that collects electrical energy then, when it has enough, it releases it in a zap of extra energy. Very useful as ice breakers at parties, capacitors are used to give a burst of extra energy to get things going. They are widely used on pumps, air conditioners and fluorescent lights. On electric motors, they give an extra burst of power to overcome friction and start them turning. Normally cylindrical about 2 cms diameter and 8 cms long with a wire coming out of one end the capacitor is usually mounted inside a small cover on the outside of the electric motor.
Common Problems The most common problem we find with water pumps is “cycling” (often known as the “Balinese water torture”) the pump continually switching itself on and off. This is usually caused by leaks in the water system (such as running toilets), badly set pressure switches or by damaged pressure tank bladders.
Pressure Switches Many of the water pumps we use have two pressure switches which sense the water pressure in the pipes and switch the pump on and off.
Plumbers and Electricians While problems in your water system can result in high water bills, they can also leave you with very high electricity bills. Finding and solving such problems may require a combination of both plumbing and electrical skills and an understanding of how the two interact.
Normally the water in your household water system is pressurised. If you turn on a tap, the pressure in the system is released, this releases the water pressure on a pressure switch which then switches the water pump on. The pump will run until you turn the tap off and the pressure of the water in your pipes increases back to a to maximum pressure at which point, the pressure operates a second switch to turn the pump off. We can adjust the settings of these switches to increase or decrease the water pressure in your pipes. Pressure Tanks Most pumps have a steel pressure tank attached which has air inside it, the air being contained in a rubber bladder. Water is not squishy like air and so the tank performs two functions, it stores pressure so the pump doesn’t need to switch on and off all the time and it provides an air cushion in the water system to absorb shocks when taps are suddenly turned on or off. Pressure tanks vary considerably in size from small ones that simply protect the pump to very large ones that can store large volumes of pressurised water, very useful if you have an unreliable electricity supply. To learn more about pressure tanks go to https://www.mrfixitbali. com/water/water-systems/water-pressure-tanks-111.html

For a list of water pump problems and how to solve them see the article at https://www.mrfixitbali.com/ water/water-systems/water-pump-problemsolving-220.html
Such problems are often beyond the ability of the average tukang who may tend to react to the individual symptoms rather than looking at the MEP systems as a whole to track down the cause. Failed attempts can be both frustrating and expensive. Previous “Fixed Abode” articles can be found subject indexed on our website at w w w. m r f i x i t b a l i . c o m . BOOMER CORNER If not Immortality what about The 120 Club? My good friend Alexander Everett died in 2005 aged 85 on his ranch in Oregon. It wasn’t really a ranch, more like an Ark. Alexander just liked to hang out with animals, certainly not eat them. Hewas an educationalist and an English eccentric much influenced by Rudolf Steiner and Huxley’s Perennial Philosophy, who decamped to Oregon in the 1960s becoming a leading figure in the personal development movement that became popular at that time. As a young man he had been crippled by polio but claimed to have cured himself. He was, he told me a member of the 120 Club, all of whom committed themselves to live to be over 120 years old. Alas, Alexander didn’t make it. He died 35 years short aged 85, which is respectable. Somewhere around the age of 18 or 19 our bodies cease developing and from that moment on the various body clocks that comprise what is us, start their remoseless countdown to our eventual demise. How long we last from that point on depends on good luck, our genes, our lifestyle and how much money we have. The process doesn’t usually start to manifest visibly until our mid-30s or so and, given good genes, psychologically we don’t usually start to feel old until our early 70s.
the cell membrane and purging the cell of toxic debris. Mitochondrial depletion lead to congestive heart failure, muscle weakness, fatigue and neurological disease. Hormone Imbalance Trillions of cells in the human body are synchronised to function by chemical signals called hormones. Aging creates hormonal imbalance that can lead to depression, osteoporosis, coronary heart disease and loss of libido. Excess Calcification Calcium ions are transported into and out of cells through calcium channels into the membrane. Aging disrupts this process and the result is excess calcium in the cells of the brain, heart valves and arterial walls that can lead to arteriosclerosis and Alzheimer’s.
aging humans, excessive levels of dangerous cytokines are produced that cause the immune system to turn on its host and create auto-immune diseases,, such as allergies, lupus, anemia, rheumatoid heart disease and arthritis. Non-Digestive Enzyme Imbalance Internal cellular functions depend on multiple enzymatic reactions occurring with precise timing. Aging causes enzyme disturbances in the brain and liver, which result in severe neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s or persistent memory loss. Impaired liver function results in toxic damage to every cell in the body. Digestive Enzyme Deficit The aging pancreas often fails to secrete enough digestive enzymes, while the aging liver does not secrete enough bile acids. The results are the chronic digestive problems many face as they age. Excitotoxicity The aging brain loses control of its release of neurotransmitters such as glutamate and dopamine, and this results in devastating brain cell damage and destruction.
Here’s what we’re all up against:
Circulatory Deficit
Chronic Inflammation
Microcapillary flow of blood to the brain, eye and skin is impaired as a part of normal aging. The result is that disorders of the eye (such as cataract, macular degeneration, glaucoma) are the No.1 age-related degenerative disease. Major and mini-strokes are common problems associated with circulatory deficit to the brain.
Aging people suffer an epidemic of outward inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, but chronic inflammation also damages brain cells, arterial walls, heart valves and other structures in the body. Heart attack, stroke, heart valve failure, and Alzheimer’s have all been linked to the chronic inflammatory cascade. Glycosylation
Fatty Acid Imbalance
Oxidative Stress
Diabetics age prematurely, but even non-diabetics suffer from this chemical reaction, where protein molecules bind to glucose molecules forming non-functioning structures. Glycosylation is most evident in senile dementia, stiffening of the arteries, and degenerative diseases of the eye.
The body requires essential fatty acids to maintain cell energy output. Aging causes alterations in the enzymes required to convert dietary fats into specific fatty acids the body requires. The effect of fatty acid imbalance manifests as irregular heartbeat, joint degeneration, low energy, hyper-coagulation, dry skin and a host of other conditions.
Free radicals are unstable molecules that have been implicated in most diseases associated with aging. Antioxidants have become popular supplements to protect against free-radical-induced cell damage, but few people take the proper combination of antioxidant supplements needed to do any good.
Methylation Deficit
DNA Mutation
Our cellular DNA requires constant enzymatic action for maintenance and repair. Aging cripples methylation metabolism causing DNA damage that can manifest as cancer, liver damage and brain cell degeneration.
Numerous synthetic and natural compounds mutate cellular DNA and cause cancer cells to form. Aging cells lose their DNA gene repair mechanisms and the result is DNA genetic damage causes cells to proliferate out of control, i.e., turn into cancer cells.
Mitochondrial Energy Depletion The cellular energy powerhouse, the mitochondria, requires a complex series of chemicals to maintain critical functions such as transporting nutrients through
Immune Dysfunction For a variety of reasons, the aging immune system loses its ability to attack bacteria, viruses and cancer cells. In

DIABETES…..THE MODERN EPIDEMIC Diabetes……Think you’re not at risk? Read on! I was shocked when I read the WHO report on current global trends in diabetes. Diabetes is now the world’s fastest growing disease. Alarmingly, about 50 percent of people with diabetes are not aware they have it. Recent studies have shown that some people suffer from diabetes for up to 7 years without being aware that they have it. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in developed countries and type II diabetes (mature onset) represents about 85 to 90 percent of all cases of diabetes. Early detection and management allows people living with diabetes to enjoy a healthy life.
insulin. The cause of type 1 diabetes is not known and it is not preventable with current knowledge. Symptoms include excessive excretion of urine (polyuria), thirst (polydipsia), constant hunger, weight loss, vision changes, and fatigue. These symptoms may occur suddenly. Type 2 diabetes Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent, or adult-onset) results from the body’s ineffective use of insulin. Type 2 diabetes comprises the majority of people with diabetes around the world, and is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity. Symptoms may be similar to those of type 1 diabetes, but are often less marked. As a result, the disease may be diagnosed several years after onset, once complications have already arisen. Until recently, this type of diabetes was seen only in adults but it is now also occurring increasingly frequently in children. Gestational diabetes Gestational diabetes is hyperglycaemia with blood glucose values above normal but below those diagnostic of diabetes, occurring during pregnancy.
Here are some key facts: • The number of people with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 & has been rising more rapidly in middle- and low-income countries. • The global prevalence of diabetes among adults over 18 years of age has risen from 4.7% in 1980 to 8.5% in 2014. • Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputation. • In 2015, an estimated 1.6 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes. Another 2.2 million deaths were attributable to high blood glucose in 2012. What is diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body’s systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels. Type 1 diabetes Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent, juvenile or childhood-onset) is characterized by deficient insulin production and requires daily administration of
Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and at delivery. Gestational diabetes usually goes away once the baby is born however; they and their children are also at increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the future. Gestational diabetes is diagnosed through prenatal screening (a simple glucose screening at 26 weeks), rather than through reported symptoms. Impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glycaemia. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glycaemia (IFG) are intermediate conditions in the transition between normality and diabetes. People with IGT or IFG are at high risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes, although this is not inevitable. What are common consequences of diabetes? Over time, diabetes can damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. • Adults with diabetes have a two- to three-fold increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. • Combined with reduced blood flow, neuropathy (nerve damage) in the feet increases the chance of foot ulcers, infection and eventual need for limb amputation. • Diabetic retinopathy is an important cause of blindness, and occurs as a result of long-term accumulated damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. 2.6% of global blindness can be attributed to diabetes (3). • Diabetes is among the leading causes of kidney failure (4).
How can the burden of diabetes be reduced? Prevention Simple lifestyle measures have been shown to be effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. To help prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, people should: • Achieve and maintain healthy body weight; • Be physically active - at least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity activity on most days. More activity is required for weight control; • Eat a healthy diet, avoiding sugar and saturated fats intake; and • Avoid tobacco use - smoking increases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Diagnosis and treatment Early diagnosis can be accomplished through relatively inexpensive testing of blood sugar. A simple visit to your local doctor or Prodia lab is all it takes. Interventions that are both cost-saving and feasible in developing countries include: •
Blood glucose control, particularly in type 1 diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes require insulin, people with type 2 diabetes can be treated with oral medication, but may also require insulin, blood pressure control & foot care.
Other cost saving interventions include: • Screening and treatment for retinopathy (which causes blindness), blood lipid control (to regulate cholesterol levels), screening for early signs of kidney disease. As with so many other things, diabetes can easily be treated and managed IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE IT. If you ignore the signs, it can ultimately be fatal.

Restaurant & Food
Update Sardinia Café is so different from the rest, it is operated
by local professionals which is probably why it was one of the first to both open at the Beachwalk Mall and be busy. Situated in a prime position facing Pantai Kuta, at the front entrance, it offers simple Italian and International, snacks and light meals, at very budget prices. Comfort food at comfort prices! Open early for breakfast they offer an Eggs Benedict that is true to its name unlike so many bogus versions on offer elsewhere throughout Bali. English muffins are split and toasted, topped with ham [from the pig not a pretend ham] and some English spinach borrowed from the Florentine, and perfectly poached eggs [firm white, soft yolk] liberally covered with a thick tasty hollandaise sauce…simply good! Being Italian the pasta and Pizzas are excellent, in fact you can create your own Pizza by selecting all of your favourite ingredients for the topping [pictured].
a Balinese sambal. From Malaysia a Nonya Laksa, egg noodles in coconut milk with prawns, fish cakes, tofu and boiled eggs. The 12 hour slow cooked Vietnamese Pho is a standout, and Beef Shanks are used for that ambrosial Thai Masaman from the Muslim south. Minced chicken with holy basil served with rice and a fried egg, that is Lantern’s take on the classic Thai Kra Pao. From India, there is a Beef Vindaloo and a Daal from the north. For dessert, what better than a Coconut and Pandan Crème Brulee.
Folk is on Jln. Monkey Forest in central Ubud yet offers a
swim-up bar. There is an entrance fee if you intend to swim [includes a towel] and a latger one for a sunbed area of up to 4 persons [includes plates of snacks]. The restaurant has been operatig for quite some time but to the rear of it has been added this pool bar area [what used to be one of the many Spas operating by Paris]. The food is diverse; smoothie bowls, cumin spiced pumpkin sandwich and a wide variety of salads. The soft shell crab burger is one of Folk’s most popular dishes.
Tiflis was Bali’s first Georgian specialty restaurant, although the old Slavyenka did do some Georgian dishes on their all Russian menu. It is found in Umalas II and judging by the language spoken by its customers the food must be very traditional. Special on Thursdays are those Georgian Dumplings, Khinkali. Also popular is the Lobiani ‘pie’, two thin layers of Georgian unleavened flat bread have a mixture of red bean and herbs sandwiched inside before baking in the oven. Georgian Dolma is so different from all the Greek and Middle Eastern variations. Finish with their homemade Chocolate Eclairs with hot thyme tea! Petitenget. Their menu offers many great ideas for snacking whilst sipping, light or full meals. Simple snacks include their great Crispy Pork Belly Bites, done in tamarind with coriander. The Korean Chicken Wings are tangy and tasty, a touch of Thai with the Fish Cakes and Pandan Chicken and a couple of local dishes; Sate Babi and Tiger Prawns in
Herb Library on Jln. Jembawan, Ubud, specializes in raw
food, but there are other options. Breakfast can be a healthy Banana Smoothie Bowl [with strawberries, and granola added], or a White Oat Porridge, but there are egg dishes if you want to be more traditional, Omelettes or Poached, with mushrooms added. Or Avocado on multi grain toast with a poached egg on top. The soups offer a big range of dishes
Gypsy is found on jln. Munduk Catu, Canggu and is the home of Canadian Chef Robin Filteau-Boucher. Open all day, breakfast can be toast many ways [French, avocado, eggplant or eggs], or eggs the usual way with roasted potatoes or Hash Browns actually made on site. Or you can have Smoothie Bowls of goodness. Later dining can commence with a cold Green Pea soup made with coconut water, followed by Tuna Tacos or Tuna Tartare wrapped in rice sushi-style. Something different? A crispy Bacon Roll or a SLOPPY jack, pulled jackfruit tossed with BBQ sauce, coleslaw, avocado and cashews. There is also a Kids Menu with small serves. Refreshingly different! Shisha Café has always been a popular spot. Years ago it moved to Jln. Sunset from its original Legian location, but its customers have followed in droves. Middle Eastern cuisine accompanies the shisha pipes. Maraq is the traditional soup to start, full of vegetables and your choice of chicken or lamb in a very spicy broth into which you dip the great fire-baked bread, or for the health conscious there is the thick lentil soup Shorbat Adas The Shakiya is the star of the mains, a Lamb Shank cooked in yoghurt. Lamb Mandi is a dish from Yemen, combining rice with meat. By Gerry Williams

The Frugal Balinist * Tank-up! Now is the time to install a water catchment system or underground water storage tank on your property in order to capture rain that falls in torrents on your roof during the wet season. According to experts from the Center for Environmental Studies (PPLH) at Udayana University, by 2025 Bali is predicted to run out of fresh water because of widespread saltwater intrusion into the water table. This problem is not exclusive to Bali’s poor and arid regions in the north and east. Three of the island’s four lakes suffer from silting and 260 out of its 400 rivers dry up during the dry season. Each day some 3 million liters of fresh water or about 60% of total water consumption in Bali is used by the tourism industry. This unbridled demand puts local residents of our tiny island of 4 million people on a collision course with the tourism industry. Since the main tourist areas are concentrated in the southern districts of Badung, Klungkung, Sanur as well as Buleleng in North Bali, those areas will suffer the most from severe water shortages in the future. Dryness linked to regularly occurring climatic conditions such as the El Nino phenomenon, which create prolonged dry seasons, will only exacerbate the problem. For plans, illustrations and instructions for appropriate, down-to-earth technologies, go to baliappropriatetechnology.org.
* Bank Savvy I If you’re looking to move to Bali and collect income in the process, one option is to transfer a significant amount of money to a local bank and live off the interest. Many expats who live off interest rates alone go around to their bank once a month to collect interest. As far as term deposits go, Indonesia has some of the highest interest rates around. Compared with rates in the U.S., rates offered in Bali can be
very attractive depending on which bank you choose. But at the same time, they appear to be running in reverse to U.S. rates where the longer a CD is held the higher the rate paid. In Indonesia, it works backwards. Longer terms generally equate to a lower rate paid, depending upon what the Central Bank and the market are expecting for the future. So stick to short term deposits with 1 month or 3-month rollover as they usually earn the best interest as well as giving you flexibility.
* Food-poisoning The first symptoms include headaches and dizziness. Bouts of diarrhea or vomiting can mean that you’re losing more fluids and electrolytes than you’re taking in, which leads to dehydration. In severe cases, you can develop serious complications including swelling of the brain, seizures and a life-threatening drop in blood volume. Staying hydrated is the top priority. To replace lost electrolytes and prevent dehydration, drink oral rehydration solutions which are more effective than sports drinks for treating foodborne illnesses. Widely available in Indonesia, even in small and remote warung, Oralit (Rp1000/packet) and Pedialyte (Rp30,000/500 ml) replaces fluids and minerals (such as sodium, potassium) lost due to diarrhea and vomiting, helping to prevent or treat the loss of too much body water (dehydration).
start any project until about a month after Ramadan finishes, allowing time for workers to return to full-time work. *Keep a sharp eye on what’s going on because instructions inevitably get lost in translation. *Don’t assume that a foreign contractor will do a better job than a local outfit. *Because of all the dust, dirt, mess and falling debris, plan on moving out during construction; work crews often start at 5:30 am. *Even if a contractor appears professional, presents detailed drawings, a full contract, has a good website, etc., they can still disappear mid job. *Insist upon talking to and visiting other projects the contractor has completed and visit their office address to make sure that they really do exist. *Don’t give contractors too much money upfront; tight control of payments and constant, knowledgeable supervision are a must. *No project will be trouble free. *Learn from your mistakes.
* Dental Health You’ll get cavities in your teeth if you eat sweet food, especially the kind you buy from a warung, if you do not clean your teeth. If a cavity starts or if a tooth is hurting, get help right away before the pain gets worse. If you do not fill a cavity, it grows bigger and deeper and costs more to fill. Join the Bali Facebook tourist and expat pages where dentists are asked about and listed nearly every day.
* Construction Know-How Don’t ever leave a house unoccupied in tropical Bali or you’ll be opening the building up to burglary, damage from storms, falling trees or tree branches and insect infestation. *Termites (rayap) can be prevented by replacing wooden trusses with a metal roof. *Use heavily reinforced earthquake proof columns and beams to support concrete roof structures. *Use aluminum foil insulation underneath roofs to keep buildings cool and prevent leaks if clay tiles shift. *Carry out extensive construction or renovation only in the dry season. *Cover exposed parts of roof with tarpaulins or truck canvases. *Don’t

Kulture Kid Kaja-Kelod, Kangin-Kauh – The ancient Balinese GPS In 2004, I wrote briefly about the Balinese concept of directions: kaja, kelod, kangin and kauh. In information presented for tourists or visitors to Bali, these are more often than not translated as north, south, west and east. However, this is incorrect. Perhaps due to the fact that over history Balinese had a very Bali-centric, Hindu-Balinese view of the world, there was no concept of compass directions. Directions were simply based on basic geography or visible natural occurrences. In Balinese Hinduism, evaluated places such as mountains are considered sacred and spiritually pure. It is no coincidence, for example, that Bali’s mother temple, Pura Besakih, was built on the slopes of Mt Agung, Bali’s highest mountain. Over time, mountain-wards become a direction for the Balinese, which they referred to as kaja. Conversely, the lower lying coastal areas became a direction known as kelod: which geographically is considered mysterious and potentially dangerous, possibly due to the dangers of the sea, as well as mosquito-carried illnesses such as malaria. The two other directions are kangin: in the direction of the rising sun and its opposite, kauh. Again these are opposing in terms of positive and negative – kangin with its light, energy and warmth (therefore safety, especially before Balinese had lighting) and kauh with its darkness, cold, and hidden dangers (therefore unsafe and a world of ghosts and demons). Since these are not fixed points on a compass, the kaja and kelod directions necessarily change based on where you are positioned in relation to them. Mt Agung is positioned in the east, so if you are in Klungkung or some parts of Karangasem, kaja? is indeed in the north and the sea in the south; however, if you are in any other part of Bali, it can be very different. Go to Singaraja, for example, and things are turned on their head: kaja is in the south or southwest and kelod to the north. Even though from a scientific point of view, these directions seem to make little sense, Balinese still based their lives around them, even in the 21st century. I’ll explain more in the next issue how literally a Balinese person’s life ‘revolves’ around these concepts. Denpasar traditional village authorities propose LargeScale Social Restrictions for the city Traditional village authorities in Denpasar are proposing that the Denpasar city government implement the central government’s Large-scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) protocol, as the city records the highest number of positive COVID-19 cases compared to other regions in Bali. “Looking at the positive cases in Denpasar, I suggest that Denpasar implements PSBB. PSBB itself doesn’t require any budget nor include any obliTukad Badung-Denpasar gation of providing daily needs to the residents, it’s different from a lockdown,” said Wayan Subawa, chief of Pagan traditional village, during a meeting in Denpasar today. Wayan Dudik Mahendra, an official from Sesetan traditional village, reportedly echoed a similar sentiment during the meeting. “Based on what I have seen in Denpasar everything looks the same, as if there is no COVID-19, the streets are still crowded, and we see near the traffic lights how many residents are out and about,” Dudik said, as quoted by Tribun. He added how patrols in Sesetan just this morning found that 240 people were not wearing masks. As of today, Bali has confirmed 140 COVID-19 cases, 32 of which are patients treated in Denpasar. Denpasar Mayor Ida Bagus Rai Mantra welcomed the suggestion, but said that such an approach would require more assessment. “This is my question: will it be effective if it’s just Denpasar implementing PSBB, considering how local transmissions are occurring in almost all regions in Bali?” Rai Mantra was quoted as saying. Bali Governor Wayan Koster today reiterated how Bali has no need to implement PSBB just yet, considering the relatively low number of local transmissions cases in the province. “The update in Bali as of April 19, there are only 25 cases of local transmission. If we look at the day-to-day developments, there are only one, two, three or four additional cases, no local transmission,” Koster said, adding that most cases in Bali are imported cases. He also explains that PSBB involves a number of requirements, such as a large number of cases and exponential growth, and that the return of many migrant workers from abroad due to the coronavirus outbreak has also contributed to an increasing number of COVID-19 cases for the island. (coconuts.com 20/04/2020) Government finally passes IMEI regulation to block ‘illegal’ cellphones in Indonesia, set to take effect in 19 April 2020
The government issued a regulation requiring all smartphones to be stamped with a unique 15-digit international mobile equipment identity, or IMEI, registered to a government database by 19 April 2020, in an attempt to curb illegal smartphone imports. Under the regulation, local mobile operators will deny service to all devices not registered with the government database. “I thank the three ministries that have worked together to integrate their rules. All of us are looking to ensure the government does not lose any revenue from cellphone sales,” Communication and Information Technology Minister said to Antara news agency. The three ministries are the Communication and Information Technology Ministry, the Industry Ministry and the Trade Ministry. Users will still be able to use cellphones that have already been activated before the regulation comes into effect. The government has set up a website to allow people to check whether their device has a registered IMEI or not. Beginning last year, Indonesia has successfully forced manufacturers’ hand to start assembling their smartphones in Indonesian factories using locally made components. Smartphone giants Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and Oppo had little choice but to comply with the government’s request since all of them want a slice of the huge Indonesian smartphone market, currently estimated to have more than 171 million mobile internet users. But, lax border control is allowing illegal – and cheaper – smartphones to continue to flood the country’s black market, undermining the manufacturers’ investment. One government estimation says one in five smartphones in Indonesia is illegal. While the government currently does not slap import tax on smartphones bought overseas, people buying them still need to pay a value-added tax of 10 percent and a deductible income tax of 7.5 percent according to customs regulation. ‘Booming’ tourism in 2021? Jokowi says he’s convinced COVID-19 pandemic will only last until end of year President Joko Widodo says he’s convinced that the COVID-19 pandemic will be resolved by the end of this year and adds that he is expecting tourism to take off in 2021. “I am convinced this [pandemic] will only be until the end of the year. Next year tourism will be booming,” Jokowi said during a video conference yesterday, as quoted in a statement issued by the Cabinet Secretariat. According to the president, this is high time for Indonesia to prepare for the massive boom after COVID-19, noting how people will be looking to travel after months of staying at home. “Everyone is yearning to go out, people want to enjoy the beauty of tourism and so this is the optimism that we must continue to build on,” he said. A similar sentiment was echoed by Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Wishnutama Kusubandio, who says his ministry will work on renovating various facilities in the country’s top tourist destinations in preparation for the expected travel boom. “Right now we are renewing some designs, such as in traditional markets. In the toilets, road access, so that visitors will have a more comfortable experience,” Wishnutama said, adding that tourism recovery is possible when connectivity returns to normal.

Indonesia began suspending all foreign arrivals, barring a few exceptions, earlier this month, joining a list of other countries around the globe in adopting strict travel restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19. The government previously came under fire for rolling out tourism incentives to entice visitors when Indonesia had no confirmed COVID-19 case.
As Bali is one of the country’s top tourist destinations, Luhut said the island will be one of the main highlights to attract foreign travelers. “We will prepare all regions. Such as Bali, we will quickly work so that it’s even better. They are working on a test kit at Udayana [University],” Luhut said, alluding that the kits will be used to test COVID-19 for incoming foreign tourists in the future. Officer uses tractor to disperse crowd in Bali’s Kedonganan Beach Local authorities reportedly used an amusingly unconventional method to disperse the crowd in Kedonganan Beach recently, after some people evidently ignored the closures of local beaches to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Bali. In one particular photo that has garnered attention on social media, an officer appears to have hopped on a tractor that is moving along the beach to shoo away beachgoers. As captioned by Detik, the beachgoers appear to be foreigners who had been sunbathing. The tractor scene was captured by a photographer from state news agency Antara, Fikri Yusuf. The officer in the photo, who has not been identified, reportedly went on a patrol in Kedonganan Beach with a mobile loudspeaker, announcing that people had to leave the area because it was closed to the public. This particular beach, like others across Bali, has been closed to the public as part of an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 on the island. Local officials said access is only allowed for fishing and religious ceremonies for the time being. Reports of people ignoring social distancing advisory are

7 infected with coronavirus after Australian couple’s Bali wedding in March, authorities confirm Australian health authorities last month confirmed seven cases of COVID-19, traced back to a wedding that reportedly took place in Bali on March 21, days after Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged Australians to avoid traveling overseas. On March 27, the New South Wales government confirmed in their daily COVID-19 statistics that “seven cases have been confirmed from a wedding in Bali,” two of whom are local residents of the southeastern Australian state while five others are interstate residents. With the story going viral today and picked up by local and international news outlets, we couldn’t help but do a little internet sleuthing, which brought us to the bride’s social media accounts. There, we found wedding photos posted from around late March, which geotagged Villa Shalimar in Canggu. The bride posted a public photo of the wedding ceremony on Facebook on March 21, along with the caption: “Marrying in the most
beautiful Bali villa with some of our nearest and dearest!” From the photo, it appears that the wedding was attended by at least two dozen people. It is unclear whether the newlyweds were among the confirmed cases, though reports from Australian news outlets suggest that those who were infected were guests. Those reports also say that the newlyweds invited some 120 people to the wedding, but it seems most did not show up due to the pandemic. Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a level-three travel advice on March 13 for the country, urging Australians to reconsider travel as the risks of the coronavirus continued to escalate. At the time, Australia had confirmed COVID-19 cases in every one of its states and territories. The Australian government then updated their travel restriction to the highest level on March 18, telling its citizens: “do not travel overseas.” (coconuts.com 20/04/2020)

Alternative Voice OK Boomer! OK Gen X’er! Let’s not Fight! It’s a Class Struggle, not a Generational one we’re in... As so often is the case, most of us only catch up with the cutting edge of things long after the edge has been well blunted. Fashion and popular music is where we see the phenomenon most. Today it’s the meme. Back in 2015, according to the website <Know Your Meme>, a young woman in New York twittered the phrase “OK Boomer” in a retort summing up with an eye-roll the sardonic view, she and her peers have of the post-war generation and its failings. It really wasn’t until earlier this year that the phrase became used inter-generationally. It went viral earlier this month on You Tube, when Chloe Swarbrick, a 25-year old entrepreneur and Green Party MP in New Zealand who, in the midst of an incendiary speech on climate change, was heckled by senior male colleague. “OK Boomer” she said dismissively carrying on with her speech. It seems the generational wars are finally upon us.
Adding for good measure “...and when we mention these things you tell us ‘Well, if you just ate less avocado toast, you’d be able to afford a mortgage. You know what? We just gonna have to fix things ourselves”. By and large Boomers, particularly those in positions of power, do not do themselves or other Boomers any favours by such avocado and barrista remarks. Boomers still sit athwart political and economic power. As parents and grandparents they own properties and equities, often obtained on the cheap via the Big Steal, when the commons was shamefully flogged off in the privatisations of the 1980s. We Boomers were the principal beneficiaries of the huge social advances that took place in the post-war period 1945-85, but in truth that was really achieved by our parents, not us. Yes, as a result we were able to break with the social mores of the past, improve women’s rights and reduce racial discrimination. And yes, there was rock music. But so what? I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to ask a Gen Z’er about that....
One of the ways we know this is the call to the colours of our generational cohort. Whether we wish it or not, we have all of us, been assigned our place in the coming conflict. We are Baby Boomers (1944-64), Gen X’ers (1965-79), Millennials (1980-94) and Gen Z’ers born after 1995. It is not so much the corrupt pols, conniving lobbyists, nor even their masters, the seriously filthy rich, that have brought us to this.
Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg is remorseless when she says “...you come to us young ones for hope. How dare you? You have stolen our dreams and our future with your empty words”. Nor does 30-year old US Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hold back. “We grow up, we come of age, and we realise that previous generations decided to screw over our planet, and create endless wars, and mess up our economy”.
And, more to the point, most Boomers are not well-off and large numbers of them remain poor, victims of an economy rigged to favour the seriously rich of any cohort, be it Boomer, X’er or Millennial (and, any minute now, Gen Z’er). It’s true, of course, that young people will be entering into a potentially even more perilous future than their elders. They will be the ones who have to live through the worst of the climate catastrophe and spend the bulk of their years working at non-unionized jobs, in a gig economy. And if that’s not enough, they will have to contend with a post-human future where the rich can genetically and cyber-tweak themselves into a super-elite that is substantially different from the rest of us. Already, Yuval Noah Harari, Isreali philosopher of choice among the titans of Silicon Valley, writes of the majority as the “useless class” since their labour is redundant and wonders what will become of them? Whether or not their masters would willingly want to pay for the welfare of people who are not ‘needed’ is a very good question. If “we” have to divide ourselves, it makes sense to look at these class divisions rather than inventing common cultural characteristics across generations.
It is the marketing mavens who have diced us and packaged us, simply to sell us more goods and services according to the economic and social habits they’ve divined are common to our cohort. Aided and abetted by lazy journalists and editors, who find it hard to resist a non-story, if it can arouse some reaction. It has taken forty years, but at last with the Gen Z’ers, a generation appears to have come of age who are not only prepared to take on and speak truth to power but do it in such a way that it strips away the obfuscation and distortion of our rulers, and those whom they serve, laying bare the greed and moral bankruptcy that remains. Davos man and his creatures have finally been outed and stand revealed. Unfortunately for Boomers they are the ones whom Gen Z’ers and Millennials hold most responsible for unaffordable housing, growing economic hardship and an impending climate apocalypse they will now have to handle.
generation most in a position to have prevented things from deteriorating to the extent they have. That said, would anything have been different if Gen X’ers and Millenials (or even Gen Z’ers) have been running things at the time?
This is no time to play the generational blame game. Workers of all ages barely earn enough to survive, much less save for retirement. In 2018 PBS Newshour reported that half of Americans age 65 have less than $25,000 in savings. One in four don’t even have $1,000.
We are also the ones who sat back, while others of our cohort ran away with the game. From the 1980s onward self-serving and powerful men with their hirelings rolled back all the advances that our fathers and mothers had won for us. Yet today our infrastructure and social services are in decay and the gulf between the rich and the poor is greater than at any time since the 1890s. Mention any of this and you will likely be accused of being a socialist or of advocating class warfare. As if socialism was a crime and that an undeclared class war was not already in full swing, waged for some three decades now by the seriously rich against the disadvantaged. The danger in all this is we may miss the real point and are conned into a Generational War and not the real fight, which is indeed - a Class War. Be in no doubt about it.
