AFL For The ANZACS What was to be an Anzac Day clash between the Bali Geckos and Myanmar at Finns Rec Club has perhaps become something even more significant. April 20 will see the Indonesian Volcanoes travel to Vung Tau for an AFl friendly with the Vietnam Swans. Located in Southern Vietnam in the Phuoc Tuy Province, Vung Tau is not far from Long Tan - the location of one of the most recognised Australian battles of the Vietnam War. The on field clash presents as a fitting way to remember the fallen from over fifty years ago. Comprised of players from all four Indonesian AFL teams - Bali Geckos, Borneo Bears, Jakarta Bintangs and the newly formed Batam Bats; the Volcanoes will be looking to reprise the success of last year’s season as AFL Asian Champions. Despite the absence of Iive footy action on the Finns field this Anzac Day, The Sports Bar and Bistro C will be sure to screen the annual Anzac Day clash between Essendon and Collingwood, live across over thirty screens from around 1pm local time so don’t miss out on a seat and go to finnsrecclub.com for further details. Not content to let the guys get all the glory, this season has seen the ladies launch their own team - The Bali Pink Geckos. Petite name perhaps, but checkout their weekly training sessions at 5pm on the Finns field every Wednesday and you’ll soon see that these girls mean business! Already seeing a positive turnout at training from a variety of different nationalities, the Pink Geckos look to field a team at the AFL Asian Championships this August. Keen to give it a go? Drop by FRC on Wednesday afternoons and join a training session! . See more on the website: www.finnsrecclub.com/whats-on/events

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH SLEEPING & POOPING…..It’s Connected! The surprising way your sleep habits are contributing to your gut woes. (Take note if you’re a little constipated). Do you feel like you always have to deal with multiple health issues? Maybe you have trouble sleeping, or you wake up without feeling refreshed. Perhaps you always have a morning headache or have difficulty concentrating. And your digestion hasn’t been good for a while - you feel bloated most days, and worry you’ve developed sensitivity to some of your favorite foods. What if I told you that your gut and brain are connected, and that your gut could be contributing to your lack of sleep? And that if we look at your health systemically, we might find that you are also dealing with a sleep airway disorder? Everything in your body is linked, and your airway has a surprising effect on your gut - and your gut has a huge influence on your health. Your Gut-Brain Connection Your gut is a sophisticated organ, not only responsible for the breakdown and absorption of food. Incredibly, your gut has neural tissue and neurotransmitters embedded in the walls, which make and release hormones such as serotonin. Your gut microbiome is just as fascinating: the colony of bacteria cells that live in your colon actually outnumber the entirety of your human cells by a factor of 10.

Your gut and brain communicate in two main ways Through the vagus nerve - the longest cranial nerve in your body, which passes from your cranium to your abdomen. The vagus nerve is an information superhighway, communicating both sensory information and movement commands. As it lines such a large section of your body, the vagus nerve has many functions, including the stimulation of the muscles in your heart to make it beat. But the vagus nerve also stimulates the movement of your gut needed in order to digest food. Your gut also uses the vagus nerve to transmit information up to your brain. The brainstem of the vagus nerve interacts with your hypothalamus and limbic system which interestingly

also govern the regulation of your emotions. Studies show that depression and anxiety can often start in the gut. Through hormones - Your gut microbiome also has a say in the working of your body and brain, through triggering the release of hormones or producing them. The bacteria can communicate with your nervous system, and certain types affect your production of serotonin. By reducing your serotonin levels, the gut bacteria can interfere with your sleep. Your brain and your guts can enter a vicious circle when it comes to sleep, as poor sleep can have a bad effect on your gut health. These paths of communication allow for subtle changes in your body, but sometimes the impact of the gut brain connection is more serious, especially regarding your sleep. 7 Ways Your Gut Affects Your Sleep - and Vice Versa Although modern medicine tends to forget the bigger picture, all of our bodily systems are connected and entwined - nervous, digestive, endocrine, cardiovascular, and so on. While digestion issues or food allergies only appear to affect your toilet habits, they often have a knock on effect, either through your gut’s communications with your brain, or interactions with your immune system. Your gut and sleep issues interact in the following situations: 1. Sleep apnea and other sleep airway disorders can impair your gut microbiome. When your microbiome is less diverse, it can affect production of serotonin and melatonin which affects your ability to sleep. In an animal study this disruption caused inflammation and insulin resistance - precursors to heart disease and diabetes. 2. Changes in the microbiome can provoke inflammation in the body and immune system, and go on to affect your ability to sleep. 3. The process of dysbiosis, where your gut microbiome is imbalanced or disturbed, can affect the working of your gut, and result in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, and more. 4. Sleep deprivation also increases production of B cells that contributes to the body’s defense system, but excess can increase allergies and asthma. Sleep loss and inflammation are intimately linked. Ultimately, a sleep disorder can contribute to food allergy and subsequent gut discomfort. 5. Increased levels of cytokines created by your immune system make it harder for you to sleep, as they signal for the release of the stress hormone cortisol. If you have insomnia this can cause a vicious cycle. The impact of stress on the gut is huge - it can trigger IBS. 6. When inflammation is provoked by leaky gut (where bacteria is allowed through the gut wall) or other gastrointestinal disorders, sleep disordered breathing can contribute to the inflammation further.

C/He/G-10 April 19

7. There is a direct link between a healthy microbiome, good sleep, and good scoring in cognitive ability for older patients. Dysbiosis leads to poor sleep - and poor cognitive abilities. As you can see, many of these disruptions have a cascading effect, and as such it’s rare to only struggle with one or two of these health concerns. Everything is connected! How Do I Improve My Sleep and Gut Health? 1. Maintain a regular sleep / wake routine 2. Refrain from taking naps during the day 3. Go to bed only when you are drowsy 4. Avoid caffeine and alcohol within six hours of bedtime 5. Avoid the use of nicotine close to bedtime or during the night 6. Exercise regularly, but avoid strenuous exercise four hours before bedtime 7. Try and consume your last meal of the day by 8pm 8. Minimize light, noise & extreme temperatures in the bedroom 9. Relax before sleep i.e. read a book, listen to music, or take a bath 10. Avoid using your bed for anything other than sleep or sex 11. Try making a to-do list before you go to bed 12. Avoid clock watching 13. If you have ongoing sleep issues, seek professional medical advice 14. Avoid the temptation to google on devices directly before sleep Supplement with probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics are healthy bacteria you can use to improve the balance of your microbiome, and can be found in live yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut. Prebiotics are a type of food indigestible to you, but they feed the good bacteria in your gut. Prebiotics The allium family (onions, garlic etc) have a positive effect on the quality of your non-REM and REM sleep, while a combination of probiotics and prebiotics can improve your metabolism, reducing inflammation, and thereby preventing the cascade of effects from poor sleep…and on that note…GOODNIGHT.

BOOMER CORNER Love and Honor Your Brain I took an Internet test to see what my life expectancy would be. The test asked a lot of questions about life habits, history of disease in the family, and even education. After I’d answered all the questions I clicked the Calculate-Life-Expectancy button at the bottom of the page. Barring any accidents, I could live to 94.3 years old. That’s way longer than I expected and about when my land contract is up.

prevent dementia, but there are actions that may help reduce your risk.

The question for us all is not how long can we live, but how can we live a long and healthy life?

I’ve been reading an increasing amount of articles on the importance of exercise in our elder years. Scientific studies show an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline.

Some Sobering Statistics The sobering part of this is that by age 80 we have a 30% chance of getting dementia and by 85 it’s almost a 50% chance of getting some type of dementia whether it’s from Alzheimer’s (AD), Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, CreutzfeldtJakob, vascular dementia, stroke, or other diseases. That’s pretty scary to me since my husband, Bob, had Alzheimer’s for 14 years. He passed away unable to feed or toilet himself, walk, or remember our life together. He could barely speak and when he did, he mostly made no sense at all. The Alzheimer’s Association states that someone in the US develops Alzheimer’s every 65 seconds. The report also says that 5.8 million people in the US alone are living with the disease. Less than 4% of those are under the age of 65. Embracing our Brains Despite these statistics, I find dwelling on them makes for too many anxious or sleepless nights. For me, it’s important to know the facts but not be controlled by them. Instead I choose to live with a positive attitude and a healthy lifestyle. How about you? Are you motivated to make changes in your lifestyle to stave off dementia? Not sure how to do this? There’s no single way to delay or

What You Can Do The Alzheimer’s Organization suggests ways to give yourself a better chance of doing just that. And the number one item is not a surprise. Here it comes (and I know you might not want to hear this) – exercise.

You don’t have to go to the gym like I do. You can choose whatever you enjoy doing as long as it gets your heart rate up for 30 to 45 minutes at a time, several days a week. This increases blood flow to the brain and body. Start out slowly, but start!

The same risk factors for obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes can negatively impact your cognitive health. I’m a firm believer in not denying myself the food I love, but rather in lowering the portion size, and of course eating those vegetables. Evidence shows that smoking increases the risk of mental decline and quitting can decrease your risk to the same as someone who doesn’t smoke. Not getting enough sleep can also impact you brain’s cognitive function. There have been recent studies that connect sleep apnea to cognitive decline. Have you noticed on the nights you get enough sleep, everything seems clearer? Take care of your mental health. Some studies link a history of depression with increased risk of cognitive decline, so seek treatment if you have symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns. And try to manage stress.

And work your way up to the optimal time. I find it difficult to get myself out of the office and to the gym because there’s always work to do and I love my work, but once I get there, I feel great – especially when the workout is over!

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests staying socially active. See friends. Join groups. Play games. Volunteer. Just get your butt out of the house and see people! Yes, even you introverts.

While I’m on the elliptical and treadmill machines, I study a foreign language so I’m exercising my brain as well as my body. It also takes the tedium out of going nowhere fast. And learning something new happens to be another recommendation of the Alzheimer’s Organization for staving off dementia.

If I’m going to live to that 94.3 years, I want to do it with style, verve, energy, a continuing desire to learn, a sense of wonder, a group of close friends, and, oh yes, with humor. Embracing my brain, cherishing it and treating it right, go a long way to attaining those goals.

If you’re under a doctor’s care, be sure to check your exercise regime with the doc before starting.

You can read more about dementia in Susan’s book – Piece by Piece: Love in the Land of Alzheimer’s, available at Ganesha Bookstore or on Amazon.

Food, Glorious Food Another action the Alzheimer’s Organization suggests is eating a heart healthy diet that not only helps your brain but also reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. One of the best ways to do this is to eat more vegetables. I’m not talking about plain steamed or boiled veggies but deliciously prepared vegetables, satisfying vegetables. You can find a lot of sumptuous recipes on Pinterest or check out my old column, Food Glorious Food, still on the Bali Advertiser website:https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/category/discontinued_ columns/food-glorious/

Alternative Voice It’s Official - Bali’s Kintamani Dog is now a Breed But didn’t we already know that...? I read the other day that Bali’s very own Kintamani dog has been declared a recognised breed by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the world body that decides such things. I would imagine it now means the price of buying a Kintamani dog will go up and breeders will vie to exhibit the breed in dog shows.

I go regularly to one of this pharmacy’s outlets in the Renon area to buy an over-the-counter medication for my wife. In this particular outlet I have noticed that they never pay the chump change or offer a receipt. On the occasion I insist on being given a receipt (the only way you are going to know the exact price) from which it becomes clear they simply keep the change.

Benny Kwok, chairman of the Indonesia Kennel Klub (sic) is pleased by the development and confirms what I say about price. He says it should be good for the economy and lift the price of these dogs, now sold at around Rp 200,000 (US$14.20). A recognized breed with -a good lineage and a certificate, like a Golden Retriever, can fetch Rp 5 million for a male pup and Rp 3 million for a female pup, he says But as Benny points out, not all Kintamani dogs are sold cheap, he cites a well-treated Kintamani dog which was sold for Rp 20 million. That’s good to know... and maybe it will encourage people to treat their doggies well too? The FCI in its assessment of the Kintamani says it is watchful, intelligent, alert, gentle, loyal and easy to train. The Kintamani is a lovely dog to be sure, and it’s nice I guess that it is recognised as such. The FCI assessment would be broadly right. I’m not so sure about gentle and easy to train though. My wife and I owned one once. We called him Neo and we loved him dearly. But he was a cat killer and if he didn’t like someone sooner or later he’d go for them and bite them, and it would mean stitches. In the end, in a time of rabies, there was nothing for it and we were forced to have him put down. It broke our hearts.

With my most recent purchase they asked for Rp20,000, which I gave them. Just to keep them honest and in case they had raised the price to Rp20K I asked for the receipt. It took a while, more than it should if sales till configured was correctly, but it was eventually forthcoming with some manual adjustment. The amount was for Rp19,250. There was no explanation or effort to pay me the balance and I left without comment. I don’t know how widespread the practice is within this company or if it is just one store. Given the unusual time it took to spit out a receipt one has to wonder. If this is just one store and its staff indulging in private enterprise, that’s one thing - but, if it’s more general or nationwide that’s something else.

Keep them Honest! The days when we were given boiled sweets in lieu of legal tender by large supermarkets seems a thing of the past. It was nice of them to make the gesture I suppose, but when you consider what a high traffic store would rake in monthly from all the customers denied payment of all change in the smaller denominated coins, it must have amounted to a nice chunk of change. Nice enough one suspects the bean counter somewhere had it all nicely figured out. So I’m sorry to see a modern variation of the practice resurrected by a major pharmacy, with branches all over the island and a name that does not begin with the letter “G”, who has adopted the practice of not providing a receipt or paying out the small change it owes on a purchase, all without bothering to mention it - let alone offer you a boiled sweet.

Whatever the case, I think it flat wrong for senior sales staff in a shop anywhere to make it a practice to ask for payment higher than the actual cost, not provide a receipt and to pocket the difference. Unless you tip for service in pharmacies I urge you all to insist on a payment receipt and the change due with in Rp100 and to reward the belatedly honest service with the coins that are forthcoming, that is if you’re in a giving mood.

First off, I’m only talking about what claims to be Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). There really is no point in buying anything else since you pay the same for a lesser product. The normal supermarket brands of EVOO, invariably blends from Italian or Spanish labels, sell from Rp190K to Rp230K a litre. The problem with the big labels is they are master blenders, who have been in the game often for over a century and who, in that time have been caught pulling some pretty low tricks, tarting up some greasy harlot and passing her off as pure virgin EVOO. Now I don’t say these guys are still at it, because they sell so much EVOO in the major markets, where there are strict rules to keep them honest (and some eye watering fines if they’re not) they’d be mad to risk it. But that’s not the case here in Indonesia. In this country the regulatory authority requires very little disclosure other than the scientific name of the ingredients of the imported fluid. The bottler here is not required to provide any authentication that the olive oil is Extra Virgin in the way it must in say the US or the EU, nor do they need to state where the olives came from. Until a year or so back these labels did include a little of this kind of information, but nothing like enough. Today they give no information as to provenance at all. Now, given the less than stellar records of these organisations, why do you suppose that is? Given that in the US, the EU and Australia and most other serious importing countries of EVOO they provide detailed information on their product, you might have thought it would be simple thing and much to their advantage, to include that infomation on their product in Indonesia, mightn’t you? Sorry guys, I’d like to be able to trust you, but I don’t. And nor should anyone, not until you’re a lot more upfront about your product. Here’s the good news...all the way from Australia! I was able to buy a 3-litre can of Cobrams Estate EVOO for Rp380K which works out at Rp.126K per litre, which is going on for RP.100K cheaper than the usual supermarket brands from Europe. Not only is it a lot cheaper, like 40% cheaper, but you can be 99% certain you are buying the real thing but best of all it tastes so much better.

How Much & how Pure is your Virgin? Twice a year or so I take it upon myself to comment on the state of the market for half decent olive oil, in the hope that consumers take note and the who people import and sell the stuff are a lot more forthcoming on provenance. The news is not so good but there is a bright spot.

GARDEN DOCTOR Mosquito Prevention in the Home and Garden ‘Hello: I was just reading your article and it is very informative. Question: I have a fountain that I have on a timer to run for 12 hours a day, and I want to know if this is sufficient to deter mosquitoes from breeding in the water? Do they lay eggs during the day or at night? Let me know what you think. Thank you, Lori’ Mosquitoes are a concern whether living in Bali permanently or even if you’re just passing through or on a short holiday for a few days. While people commonly worry about unexpected death by car accident, or even more unlikely situations such as lightning strikes, shark attacks etc., it is in fact the mosquito that has likely killed more people than anything else - even more than all the wars combined throughout history. It is estimated that the little buggers kill more than 700,000 people a year and account for almost 20% of the of the infectious disease burden worldwide. What makes them so dangerous is their capacity to transmit viruses and other parasites that can cause debilitating and often fatal diseases. Every year, it is estimated that malaria alone kills 400,000 people (mainly children) and incapacitates another 200 million for weeks and months. Other mosquito-borne diseases include dengue - 50 to 100 million cases per year worldwide. Deadly yellow fever which has a high mortality rate, and Japanese encephalitis - which can be vaccinated against yet still results in more than 10,000 deaths per year. Another lesser known yet just as nasty virus spread by mozzies is chikungunya. Whilst less publicised it can be every bit as bad as dengue - I know because I’ve caught chikungunya during an outbreak in Bali back in 2007. The result was bed ridden, fever, nausea and a crushing headache for days right behind the eyeballs - I also lost 10 kilos in seven days, and as for how that happened? Well… I’ll leave that one for you to figure out! In regard to dengue the biggest worry is catching it more than once as there is no accumulated antibody effect and it’s actually more likely to be fatal if you catch it a second time round and also more likely to be more a danger to adults than young children. Malaria they say doesn’t exist in Bali - but hey I remember that a few years ago rabies didn’t exist here either when I got bitten by a dog…but that’s a story for another day. Malaria is definitely a danger on many islands throughout Indonesia so always check before you travel, particularly from Lombok to the east. So back to the garden, water features and the home….it is definitely a good idea to keep mosquitoes out of gardens and living areas as best we can. In my experience dengue and chikungunya are the main culprits that you should be worried about in Bali, and Japanese encephalitis is also known to be prevalent. To prevent mosquitoes breeding obviously you need to pay attention to stagnant water sources, yet an often overlooked aspect is just general clutter. Over grown gardens, piles of rubbish, even piles of clothes on the bed are places that mosquitoes will like to hide in and around the house.

Adult mosquitoes usually rest indoors in dark areas like closets, under beds, behind curtains etc but like I’ve said clutter will attract more of them. Again, I can only speak from my experience, I know that a well airconditioned house or a strong fan also acts an effective deterrent to the little nasties. Just a few mosquitoes per household can produce a large dengue outbreak, and whilst you may be able to effectively keep them out of the house we cannot stay indoors forever - and during the wet season Bali can feel like one giant water feature! So what’s the answer? The standard personal precautions should always be taken - use insect repellent, cover exposed limbs, use citronella candles and mosquito coils under tables and mosquito nets indoors. As to whether they lay eggs by day or night…well it is more complicated than that. They usually deposit their eggs at night, and can lay them about every third night, up to three times. The dengue carrying mosquito will often lay on the side of your water filled container anticipating a rise in the water level, the eggs could stay active there for months. Though most mosquitoes lay their eggs directly into water, others lay their eggs near bodies of water in anticipation of the water level rising. Eggs will hatch into larvae within 24 to 48 hours of becoming submersed. To deter mosquitoes from laying eggs in your water feature the first step would be running the pump from dusk until dawn, yet this is still no guarantee. You could purchase a solar powered fountain to pick up the slack during daylight hours - they are quite cheap to buy online. Depending on the size of the water feature a mosquito net draped over the top during the day could be an effective option. My preferred strategy would be to introduce predator fish into the water in combination with all of the above.

An aerator, pump, or fountain would need to be extremely aggressive in the amount of water it churns through to minimise mosquitoes and their larvae. A pond of any size, even when well agitated, will usually have at least one zone that is calm enough to allow mosquitoes to lay their eggs, and that’s where the fish come in. Most small fish species eat mosquito larvae, including the aptly named mosquito fish, goldfish, minnows, tetras and guppies. Mosquito fish are the best-known for their ability to control mosquitoes and thrive in a wide variety of weather conditions. A single mosquito fish can eat up to 100 larvae in a day. For larger ponds you can use mosquito dunks in the water (which is like a big tablet) that contains a bacteria called bacillus thuringiensis, which disrupts the mosquito breeding cycle and also harmless to children, pets, birds, plants, or any fish you might have. Other tactics to consider? Eliminate standing water from the immediate garden and household areas. Common breeding grounds are buckets, plant trays and guttering filled with rain water. Overturn and clean up water filled containers and unblock your roof gutters and ensure stormwater drains run freely to prevent breeding grounds for mozzies. Remember these are all harm minimisation strategies, unfortunately you can’t have the tropics without the mosquitoes, or your cake and eat it too!

The Frugal Balinist Q Free Internet calls

Q Avoid high traffic fines!

Google Duo is a simple mobile app for Android and iOS which lets users make high-def video calls. This is computer to computer or smartphone to smartphone high quality telephone calling, different from WhatsApp and Skype because you don’t need a telephone number. You can also leave a video message if the person you’re calling can’t pick up. Especially convenient if you have zero cell service in your area but strong Wi-Fi. When you’re not on Wi-Fi or your Wi-Fi is spotty, there’s a bit of a delay between accepting the call and when the caller can hear you, which can lead to some confusion, but still the call quality is adequate. Very simple interface, no bells and whistles, just works well!

1. If the police stop you at a police roadblock (razia zebra) for a violation, don’t try to bribe (minta damai). There are now CCTV cameras everywhere. 2. The cop will take your STNK (vehicle registration) and issue you with a “blue slip” (slip biru). You get one portion and he keeps the other portion; both bear the ticket number (tilang nomor register). You will be sent a copy of the ticket to your telephone number the next day. 3. Access www.etilang.info and type in your ticket number. The website will show the fine amount, the date and location of your court appearance (sidang pengadilan). 4. If you think the amount is correct and fair, pay the official fine (pembayaran maksimum) at an ATM (BRI Bank ATMs are the most numerous). Take the payment receipt to the POLRES police station that issued the ticket and they’ll return your STNK. 5. If you don’t agree with the amount, you may appear at court within 5-7 days. The court appearance date and location will also be shown on the website www.etilang.info after typing in your ticket number. 6. At the court (Kantor Pengadilan), you’ll have an opportunity to question the fine amount, state your side of the story and argue (politely!) for a lower fine. You’ll most likely pay substantially less because you’ll only be paying for the violation(s) you were guilty of. 7. Pay the fine at the court and get your STNK back.

Q Easy gardening

Shutting doors and windows blocks out the beautiful mild tropical weather - what we came here for! Typically, an a/c unit should only be used in the bedroom at night to lessen the discomfort from the heat and humidity and sometimes in the living room to initially cool the room down a little. It’s far cheaper and more planet-friendly just to use fans when sleeping at night to stir the air and keep the crawlies off. Then it’s just a matter of becoming acclimatized to the warmer temperatures. When it gets hot, jump in the pool or take a cold-water shower using a gayung (dipper) elephant-fashion. In your front yard, construct a mini water fountain (air mancur) run with an electric pump which will help keep the whole house cool.

Q NO A/C!

Spring onions (daun bawang) keep well if refrigerated with the stem ends placed in a glass of water. Lemongrass (sereh) grows readily in almost any soil, it’s bulbs and leaves constantly multiplying. It’s easily grown by putting the stem end of a stalk in water until the roots appear, then it can be potted or planted out in the garden. All types of Basil (daun selasih) can be grown easily in the garden or pot by simply putting several stems into the earth, water well. With enough sunshine and water, the stems will very soon take root and grow vigorously.

Q Go Hipwee! Much can be learned from the way smart young Indonesians travel to Bali as exemplified by the wild popularity of the Hipwee travel site. Resourceful young Javanese, determined to experience the best of Bali on a very limited budget, spend as little as Rp500,000 (for two!) on 4-5-day visit. (Even less than Chinese tourists in package tour groups who each pay around Rp800,000 for a 5-day stay in Bali.) They team up to rent a scooter (which can ride two) for only Rp50,000/day. They book Rp50,000 to Rp90,000 single rooms in homestays and hostels and order a foam mattress (which at Rp20,000 is less than an extra single bed for Rp50,000) where the tariff includes tea, toast or Jajan Bali (snacks). They eat Rp10,000 nasi campur (takeaway mixed rice meals or bungkus nasi campur) at roadside warung. They shop for inexpensive souvenirs at Pernak-Pernak Ceking in Desa Wisata Tegalalang and Kaos Barong in Desa Beng near Kantor Bupati Gianyar, both with high concentrations of woodcarvers, craft stalls and workshops. Restaurant Review

Dining in Basque Country!

Akua di Bilbao is a Spanish Tapas restaurant featuring many standards from Basque cuisine. Whilst it is mainly a Tapas restaurant standard mains are also served. The Tapas plates here are all very generous in size and big enough to be shared, unlike the mini plates that are traditionally served in Tapas bars through out the world.

Patatas Bravas are potatoes first boiled then fried served with a spicy sauce, whilst Patatas Fritas are crunchy French Fries sprinkled with parmesan. Pikillo Rolleno de Carne is a Paprika stuffed with beef and onion. Pisto a la Bilbaina are slow cooked vegetables with scrambled egg.

On a hot day there is no more pleasant starter than the traditional soup, Gazpacho, an icy cold blend of tomatoes and vegetables. Salads can be Chicken or Shrimp, or a special of greens, apple, goat cheese and truffle oil. The Tapas can be enjoyed any time of the day, with a few drinks, or as entrees to a full meal. The excellent list of Spanish wines by the glass, makes Akua a perfect place for sipping and snacking.

For mains there is a choice of three different Paellas; Seafood, Chicken & Vegetable or just plain Vegetarian. Other mains include Steak, Pork and Fish. Barramundi can be with sautéed rice and the Mexican veracruz sauce [tomato based with garlic, onions and peppers] or with baked potato and Bilbaina sauce a Basque special green sauce with asparagus, peas and eggs. Tuna can be grilled and served with mixed vegetables or caramelized onions.

Whilst the fare is mainly traditional they are sometimes with a modern twist. The excellent Albondigas [meat balls] are an example as they come with French Fries [very good crunchy ones] in a thick rich very tasty gravy which also proves Beef Tenderloin is with a paprika confit and fries or with blue excellent for dunking of the chips at the end. cheese sauce and baked potato. The Pork Tenderloin is on a skewer with paprika and zucchini, drizzled with an onion sauce. Chanpignons con Bacon [pictured] is a plate of mushroom heads topped with finely minced garlic and crisp bacon For the tables of mixed customers there are also a few Asian shards. The Croquettes can be ‘de Huevo’ with béchamel dishes. R O TA R Y NEWS Thank you from the Rotary Club of Bali Canggu We’d like to say a very big thank you to the 130 members of our local community who supported the Rotary Club of Bali Canggu’s (RCBC) first Gala Dinner on Saturday 30th March at the Tugu Hotel in Batu Bolong. A big thank you to the I’m An Angel foundation for their amazing support. Also, to the following local businesses for their kind sponsorship. Teak Tree Farm, Bounty Cruises, MAH Collection, Tugu Hotel Lombok, Kuno Villas on Gili T, Kayu Café Gili T, Sempiak Lombok, Novotel Kuta Lombok, Senja Boat Rides Kuta Lombok, Milk Café, W Hotel Bali, Alilia Spa, Seasalt at Alilia, Nagicia Jewellery, Daphne Zepos, Ayung Resort, Aperitif Restaurant, Mason Adventures Helicopter Ride, Savage Photography, Villa Ylang Ylang, Ayana Resort, Alkemi Jewellery, Lisa Roet Jewellery, Villa Surgawi, Indohomes, Villa Deva, Kubu Villas Seminyak, Blu Bamboo Hotel, Scallywags Smugglers Hideaway on Gili A, Seri Resort, Full Moon Villa Ubud, Hacienda Villa, Karma Kandara, Brenda Reimers, Craft District, Bonito Jewellery, Dewina the Label, JH Kim Taekwondo, Kilo Restaurant, Hard Rock Hotel, Finns Club, Lily Jean, Padma Resort Legian, Gili Air Cooking School, Casa Koko Villa, Tropicola, Sardine Restaurant, Gili Bumblebee Montessori, El Kabron, SG, Yoga Barn, Kebun, Sasak Soul Surf, Mana Yoga, Mexican Resto Lombok, Plaga Wines, Bintang, Albens Cider, Hatten Wines, Bali Moon Cocktails, Vibe Liquors & Spirits, Taman & Puri Bhagawan, Live Essences Jamu. We couldn’t have made it a success without your generous participation. The event was the brainchild of our Rotarians Klara Dallas, Tricia Kim, Aleksander Denic and assisted by Donna Greene. They were able to bring everything together in just two months, which was an incredible job, especially as the event raised almost IDR 200,000,000 for the club’s social projects.

RCBC has largely been focused on supporting victims of last year’s devastating earthquakes in Lombok, particularly the children. And we are grateful to have been working with David from Easy Tees who has printed backpacks provided by the club, which we filled with supplies and delivered to schools in Lombok together with Tricia Kim and Bonito Jewellery. RCBC’s commitment on this front was to match Bonito’s donation of 200 backpacks. We would also like to thank Donna Greene for her campaign to provide basic school equipment such as books, crayons, pencils and erasers for the kids in Lombok. She successfully collected over AUD 1,000 worth of school supplies through private donors, including Aussie Rotarians David and Marilyn Barton (pictured) from RC Meville Perth WA. The delivery of these, the backpacks and other items was organized by fellow Rotarian Tricia Kim and Bonito Jewellery and an entourage of volunteers, who spent two days in Lombok to visit three schools and distribute backpacks to more than 300 kids. Thank you, Tricia, Bonito and everyone who was involved or kindly donated!

Big thanks also to Mr. Jack Daniels who worked tirelessly the whole evening as MC and Auctioneer, helping us to raise over IDR 100,000,000 of the final amount. We have been touched by your love and generosity. So who are we? Who is Rotary Canggu? Well, we’re a small yet passionate group of like-minded people who offer service and support to local projects and good causes. And we are vibrant and zealous about serving the Canggu community and beyond. We’re looking to increase our numbers in the coming months, so if you would like to help and be part of a family style group of friends, why not join us for our bi-weekly meetings held on the first and third Tuesday of every month in the Tugu Hotel in Batu Bolong from 6pm. Our meetings typically include an inspiring guest speaker and usually run from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

As well as our ongoing Lombok projects we’re also supporting farmers in the Jembrana region of West Bali, again through education. Su-Re.co, which is an acronym for Sustainability-Resilience Company, together with the Meteorological Department of Indonesia are training cocoa and coffee farmers how to adapt to climate change and assist them to become organically certified through the Netherlands. With this official certification the farmers are able to ship internationally and make more money as a result. We are not able to run social projects like this and events like our Gala Dinner without your continued support and commitment to help. Everything about the event was so thoughtful and amazing and so very Bali; from the Gala

As well as getting together with like-minded people, learning about club projects and listening to guest speakers present interesting topics, you are more than welcome to join RCBC members, along with visiting Rotarians and guests after the meeting finishes for drinks and snacks. We’d love for you to help us become part of the solution. Once again thank you to everyone for making our first Gala Dinner such a great success and we look forward to many more! Education & Family

School News Education Outside the Classroom (EoTC) at Bali Island School At Bali Island School we are firm believers in the fact that learning does not only occur in the classroom but also in our playgrounds, in our school garden and farm and right across the island of Bali. Education Outside the Classroom includes any curriculum based activity that takes place outside of the school including excursions, community service, sports trips or overnight camps. These activities allow us to build on and support the the learning in the classroom and allows students to transfer their knowledge, skills and understandings to real world settings. Earlier this year, our Grade 2 students were studying a Primary Years Programme (PYP) Unit of Inquiry with the Central idea, ‘People can make choices in order to sustain the Earth’s resources’. Throughout the unit, the students investigated personal choices that can help sustain the environment, reusing and recycling different materials and reducing waste. Their classroom learning led to them deciding that they could work with the Trash Hero organisation in Sanur to help clean up the beach. This meaningful action undertaken by our students allowed them to take real ownership of their learning while contributing to the local community and environment.

Our Grade 5 students participated in the overnight camp as part of our school’s Camping Programme that continues right through the secondary school until Grade 11. Our intrepid students travelled to Sila’s Agrotourism, Bedugul where they participated in numerous team building activities, some great forest hikes, some challenging cycling, a botanical journey and other fun things including building and lighting camp fires. Students who participate in overnight camps such as these early in the school year, benefit greatly as a class group or community with strong relationships between them being built or further developed. Another major Education Outside the Classroom activity that is currently taking place involves our Grade 4 students who have been working with the students from the Kupu Kupu Foundation in Ubud. The Kupu-Kupu Foundation’s aim is to improve the lives of people with disabilities in Bali. Our Grade 4 students visited the students at Kupu Kupu to meet them and to lead them in a range of art, music, reading and sport activities. Kupu Kupu also asked for our support in setting up a recycling programme at their centre, so our Grade 4 students have decided to use some of the profits from their upcoming Market Day to purchase recycling bins. When the Kupu Kupu students visit us at Bali Island School in the next few weeks, our Grade 4 students will help teach them about recycling through a range of activities so that the Kupu Kupu students can implement their own recycling programme. This is a great example of a sustainable action undertaken by our Grade 4 students that will again benefit the local community and environment.

Other examples of great quality learning happening outside of the classroom include a number of our non Indonesian students traveling to a local market to practice their Bahasa Indonesian when shopping for fresh fruit. Our 3 and 4 year old students were inquiring into how plants play an important role in keeping us alive. They were quite interested in plants that grow and live in water as opposed to soil so designed a pond which they helped to build with support from our maintenance team. We repurposed an old bathtub and set up the pond in our school farm which is now home to numerous healthy plants and a few small turtles.

These are just a few of the great Education Outside the Classroom activities that take place in the Primary at Bali Island School throughout the year and our students, local community and environment are definitely much better off as a result of the programme. BIS Primary Open Day on 9th May 2019 from 10 a.m to 12 p.m. Come and learn about our Primary programme at Bali Island School and see our fantastic facilities Craig Eldred Primary Principal Copyright © 2019 School News You can read all past articles of School News at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

Bali For Kids This week, I’m doing a roundup of my daughter’s favorite adventure activities in Bali. From being afraid of the water at 2, and only wanting to paddle in the shallow end of a pool, she now, at 12, enjoys challenging herself with adventure activities, especially around water. However, while she is almost a teenager, she still enjoys climbing air castles and going down slides as well, so I’ve included her perennial favorite, Bali Fun World. *****************************************************************

You can visit the website, http://www.balifunworld.net, call them on +62 361 294 924 or email them at info@balifunworld.com. ******************************************************************** If your kids like water fun, they will love WaterBom Water Park (Jl. Kartika Plaza, Tuban, Kuta). Ranked as the Number One water park in Asia by Trip Advisor, Water Bom is built across nearly four hectares in Kuta, across from the Discovery Mall. The park features numerous rides and attractions, ranging from mellow to moderate to extreme. On the mellow end of the spectrum, the Lazy River meanders sedately allowing raft riders to slowly ride or paddle around a long loop. This ride is good for small children with parents or people with mobility issues as it’s a gentle, easy flow. On the more challenging level are moderate rides like the Constrictor, Python and SuperBowl, as well as exhilarating and faster extreme rides for older children and adults, such as Smashdown, Twin Racers, Pipeline and Double Twist.

Bali Fun World

Bali Fun World (Jl. Lettu I Wayan Sutha II, Br. Peninjoan, Batuan, Sukawati, Gianyar) is a 2000 square meter indoor entertainment center near Sukawati Art Market, about 20 minutes from Ubud. The center is stocked with slides, giant inflatable climbing towers, trampolines for jumping and much more. The center offers a ball pool, mini slides, playhouses, swings, mini cars and mini-climbing equipment for small children. For older children, there is a climbing castle, a giant slide, trampolines with bungee jumping, air hockey tables, a rodeo bull ride, padded sumo wrestling, boxing and gladiator gear and more. For adults, Bali Fun World offers a café with plenty of seating, free coffee or tea and free wifi. The equipment is set up according to international safety standards and some of the equipment has maximum weight limits of 100 kg. Not all the slides and trampolines have attendants on them, so you need to watch your kids or go on the equipment with them, particularly young children. Admission fees are USD $15 for adults or children for all day use, while children under 18 months and adults over 60 enter for free. They only accept cash. Bali Fun World will also host birthday parties and other events. You need to

The park also offers attractions such as Flow Rider, which lets you practice body boarding/surfing on a wave machine, The Water Blaster for young children and bungee jumping with a safety harness. All rides and attractions are built and maintained to strict international safety standards. Each ride has a minimum height and age requirement; for children under six, parents must ride with their children. WaterBom keeps 50% of the park as green space, and houses a number of endangered species native to Bali. In addition to winning Trip Advisor and World Travel Awards, WaterBom has also received awards from EarthCheck and Tri Hita Karana, recognizing the park’s environmental and sustainability efforts. WaterBom also supports the 1,000 Bamboo Villages Program, which encourages bamboo planting in villages in Kintamani to control erosion, reduce rainwater runoff and offer agro-forestry employment for locals. Cafes, restaurants and bars are available on the premises. Food and drinks are not included in the ticket price. Singleday passes are available for IDR 327,000 for children 2-11 and IDR 455,000 for adults. Family packages are available for IDR 1,435,000.

******************************************************************* Bali Treetop Adventure Park (Bali Botanical Garden, Candikuning, Bedugal) is a tree-based adventure park with seven rope circuits ranging in height from 2-20 meters. The park is located in Bedugal, about an hour from Ubud, 75 minutes from Kuta or Sanur and 90 minutes from Nusa Dua. The circuits run from easy courses for small children to more challenging circuits, to the Adrenaline Black Circuit, which is challenging, requiring physical strength and jumping ability. The basic courses are ranked by colors, with easier courses for children 4-6 and 4-8, while the intermediate courses are for children over 8 and the more challenging circuits for children over 12. Only children over 12, accompanied by an adult, can go on the advanced courses. Treetops is open daily from 08:30 am to 6 pm. Prices start at USD $14 for children, USD $22 for adults and USD $57 for family packages. This gets you two and a half hours of access to all 7 levels of circuits and 72 challenges. Guests are given complete safety equipment, have access to assistance and support from professionally trained instructors, and the circuits are built to European safety standards. Tracy Wilkinson: The Luwak Lady Coffee luwak is brewed from beans that have passed through the digestive tract of the Asian palm civet, locally known as luwak. While traditionally coffee beans were sourced from wild civets, today they are mostly collected from caged civets living in dreadful conditions. Concerned about the plight of the nocturnal animals, Tracy Wilkinson has decided to make a difference.

thriving and has grown heaps. What are the biggest dangers for civet cats in Bali? Because luwaks love ripe fruit, they are not popular with farmers and sometime get shot and killed. They are also a money maker for a variety of people. I have witnessed kids catching a luwak and taking it to a local “breeder” in the hope of selling it. The breeders make money by leasing the luwaks to coffee producers to make kopi luwak. Some of the plantations keep them caged to attract visitors to their facilities, looking to sell coffee to foreigners who don’t know what really happens behind the scenes. What are the highlights that come with caring for civets? It is such a privilege to raise luwaks. I build an incredible trust with them and they soon know me as their mother, from the early days of milk feeding them every hour or so to taking them riding on the motorbike or for an adventure to the beach. I get endless laughs out of watching them learn. I think the funniest thing is when they are learning to pounce. They get all the body action happening, but can’t get all four feet off the floor at the same time. When they are learning to climb, they get stuck in all sorts of places and then call out until I come and get them down. What are the greatest challenges that come with caring for civets?

Tell me a bit about yourself. Why Bali? I moved to Bali in 2015 after I was diagnosed with Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I had had eleven heart attacks by that stage, and was told there was no chance of surviving much longer. My body didn’t cope with fluctuating climatic conditions and I required an intense treatment and medication regimen to buy time, which was unaffordable and mostly inaccessible in Australia. Bali was always my favorite holiday destination, so I took a chance on the island saving my life. So far, so good. What is the story of the first civet you rescued? I fell in love with a luwak at Tanah Lot some years ago. He kissed my face and snuggled in my hair. I put the word out that I was looking for a baby to raise. A friend called and I rode 13 hours across Bali and Java to pick up two tiny baby luwaks whose mother had been shot and killed by a farmer. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing but was determined to save them. The little girl died shortly after, but the little boy survived. How many civets have you helped to return to the wild since then? Since Mokka and Moose, my first two, I have rescued another seven luwak babies. After a while, I developed a bit of a reputation for rescuing them, and people started tagging me in Facebook posts whenever a luwak was in distress. My latest rescue was captured by a domestic cat and brought home to show the owner. The owner posted on Facebook, asking for help. She asked me if I could take her because she was so tiny. She was only about three days old, still with her eyes closed and umbilical cord attached. I wasn’t sure I could save her because she was injured, and she couldn’t suckle. A month or so later, she is

Luwaks do not have a history of domestication. They are essentially a wild animal. Their instinct is very strong, and they naturally want to return to the wild when they are mature enough. Any thoughts of them being a regular pet are misguided, and they are extremely aggressive if not cared for appropriately. Sadly, many owners cut their teeth and their claws to minimize the damage they can do if they are upset or frightened about something and feel the need to defend themselves. This practice takes away the luwak’s ability to hunt and fend for itself. I find it barbaric. Luwaks are nocturnal, so forget about having a regular sleep pattern if you are rescuing one. After their first month of development, when they sleep about 20 hours a day, they really come to life and think every night is a party. Sadly, most luwak owners cage them overnight when they should be most active. My rescues are 100% free at all times. My whole house is their playground. Once rehabilitated, how do you ensure the safe return of each civet to the wild? At the moment, this takes care of itself. I live in a farming area, and my rescues decide for themselves when it is time to move out of my home. Moxie had the most dramatic moving out. She climbed to a high point in my garden and called out for a mate for almost two weeks. It is the most heartbreaking sound. Eventually, Prince Charming came along and whisked her away. She now lives in a nearby tree with her husband and babies. She comes to visit every now and again, but won’t let me handle her anymore. I am a proud granny. Someday, I would love to establish a proper facility for rescuing and rehabilitating luwaks. I could help repopulate the forested areas they naturally live in with a more restructured release program. For now, I have to trust that my rescues know when they are ready and are savvy enough hunters to be fine on their own. Because I don’t

cage them, they learn to hunt early in life. I’m always sad when they go, but it is about their life being fulfilled, not mine. Kopi luwak trade is the main culprit that leads to the abuse of civets in Bali. What do you think is the best solution to this problem and how could it be achieved? Once upon a time, battery hens producing eggs was the norm. With education and awareness, the public began to put pressure on egg farmers to adapt their practices and become more humane. Today, people know about free range eggs and barn raised chickens, and many steer away from caged suppliers. My dream is to create a sanctuary that educates both the public and the farmers about what is possible in responsible kopi luwak production. I have friends with charity and community organizations involved in coffee farming. They are already thinking about sustainable production, organic cropping, and other ethical strategies. We need to make it worthwhile for the farmers to change their practices. As money talks, the goal would be to have them make money producing wild luwak coffee, where no animals are harmed. How can people help the cause? I am surprised by people’s ignorance. Tourists visit coffee plantations and are wooed by the quiet, sleepy luwaks in cages. They spend their money sampling the various types of coffee and buying packages to take back to their home countries. Rarely do they ask anything about the behindthe-scenes production of this very expensive coffee. If they took the time to find out more, it is unlikely they would ever buy farmed kopi luwak. There is not nearly enough education about the plight of the luwak. I am unaware of any luwak sanctuaries in Bali, so there is no foundation to donate too. If enough people rallied together, I would certainly change this and build a facility that rescues and rehabilitates luwaks, educates the public about the impact of farmed kopi luwak, and, work with coffee farmers to adapt their practices to support wild luwaks. What do you think the future holds for civets on the island? I would love to see an end to caged luwaks in coffee production. Nothing would delight me more than seeing wild luwak plantations opening all over Indonesia. Without voice, things cannot change here. There is an overwhelming need to educate people from farm to coffee cup. Yet, so few people make noise and do what it takes to effect the necessary changes. It is possible to do away with the cruelty in kopi luwak production. The egg production industry changed for the better. It is time for the same to happen for the luwak. Local News Anger at plan to develop 2002 Bali bombings site The Whitford Lions Club has expressed its anger at plans to develop the site of the 2002 Bali bombings. With the Kingsley Amateur Football Club, which lost seven club members in the terrorist attack, the Lions have supported the Bali Peace Park Association’s move to buy the Sari Club site for the park. Whitford Lions treasurer Keith Pearce, a past president of the Kingsley club and father of one the survivors, recently wrote to Indonesian President Joko Widodo after hearing his government was allowing commercial development. “To allow a five-floor commercial development on the site indicates that Indonesia has no regard for those many people who perished in the bombing and that Indonesia does not value peace,” Mr Pearce wrote.

“Most Australians support the peace park and are looking to Indonesia to demonstrate that Indonesia is now a peaceful place. “Desecrating the Sari Club site will be an affront to those nations who lost citizens in the bombings and will devalue Bali as a place to visit. “As one of those who has lived with the pain of the thirteen survivors, including my son, and the parents of the seven who died, I am horrified that this development is taking place. “I regard the Sari Club site as sacred land and believe it should never be anything other than a peace park.” The association is seeking to revoke the owner of the site’s building permit. And the Whitford club is continuing to raise funds for the association’s aim to turn the site into a peace park. [communitynews.com.au April 12, 2019] Mount Agung volcano continues sporadic eruptions demonstrating it’s not over until it’s over A large eruption of the Mount Agung volcano on Thursday April 11, 2010, erupted with a sound that was heard over a radius of 12-kilometers. Volcanic observers and local residents report the mountaintop was aglow during the period of the eruption. Beritabali.com quotes Dr. Devy Kamil Syahbana, a Government Volcanologist monitoring Mount Agung who said the mountain was producing Strombolian eruptions. Named after an Italian volcano of the same name, Strombolian eruptions are considered relatively mild on the explositivity index of between 1 and 3. Such eruptions are comprised of the ejection of incandescent cinder lava bombs rising potentially several hundred meters above the crater.

Devy Kamil went on to explain that the recent spate of Strombolian eruptions demonstrate that Mount Agung is an open system volcano still very much alive in magmatic terms. The volcanologist said there is no need for earthquakes to trigger another eruption with magma reservoirs having now risen to a significant degree near the surface of the volcano. He said an eruption will occur when pressure builds sufficiently to cause magma to overflow the crater. In the current situation, Devy Kamil warned the public should not engage in any trekking and climbing activity on Mount Agung. Warning a significant eruption could happen with little or no warning. An exclusion or “no go” zone of 4-kilometers from Mount Agung’s peak remains in effect, with authorities warning it is unsafe to conduct any activities inside that danger zone. Kintamani dog becomes first Indonesian breed to get international recognition The Kintamani dog from Bali has been internationally recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), an international federation of national kennel clubs. The recognition letter was officially submitted by the Belgiumbased organization on Feb. 20, signed by its executive director Yves De Clercq. The chairman of the Indonesia Kennel Klub (IKK), Benny Kwok Wie Sioe, told journalists on Saturday that the Kintamani was the first Indonesian dog breed to be recognized internationally. “The FCI has declared to the world that the Kintamani dog is a dog breed native to Indonesia,” Benny said, adding that the IKK had proposed the recognition years ago.

Animal lovers have criticized some practices within the pet trade and encourage the adoption of pets instead. However, dog breeding and selling are legal in Indonesia, even though there are reports of alleged abuse. Benny said not all Kintamani dogs were sold for cheap, citing an instance in which a well-treated Kintamani dog was sold for Rp 20 million. “The Kintamani dog is an evolving breed indigenous to the Kintamani region of Bali. Kintamani dogs cohabitate with feral Bali street dogs, although folklore has the breed originating 600 years ago from a Chinese Chow Chow, “ said a 2005 paper on the breed in Journal of Heredity, written by Puja, Irion, Schaffer and Pedersen.

With the FCI recognition, Benny added, the breed could join international competitions and dog shows, and Kintamani birth documents could use the official FCI logo. Benny officially handed on Saturday afternoon the FCI recognition letter to Bali Governor I Wayan Koster, who expressed appreciation for the honor. “As a Balinese, I feel very proud for the international recognition. It shows that the world recognizes that Bali has high-quality native dog breeds that deserve to participate in national and international competitions,” Koster said. Koster said the recognition should motivate all Balinese to keep preserving and developing local animals and plants. “We have amazing nature with many animals from Bali, such the Bali starling and Bali cow. These animals should be preserved to keep our ecosystem in Bali unique. It is also value for our economy,” he said.

In the document for the breed on the FCI website, the federation states that the Kintamani dog originated from the village of Sukawana in Kintamani, Bali. “The Kintamani-Bali Dog comes from the region of mountains, volcanoes and forests,” it says. The origins of the Kintamani dog prior to that are unknown. “The Kintamani-Bali Dog is the Republic of Indonesia’s national breed and very popular in the country,” the FCI notes. The document also says the breed is a “well-balanced dog with a rectangular body, a wedge-shaped head, moderate stop, pricked ear and a sickle tail with a double coat, harsh outer coat of medium length on the body and shorter on its face.” The temperament of the Kintamani is said to be watchful, intelligent, alert, gentle, loyal and easy to train. [thejakartapost.com April 14, 2019]

Benny said Kintamani dogs were highly intelligent and had won several competitions in the past several years. “I also have a Kintamani dog. They have extraordinary intelligence,” Benny said. He expressed hope that the international recognition could provide value to the community, as it could lift the price of the breed. “Now, it is sold at around Rp 200,000 (US$14.20) or Rp 300,000,” he said. A recognized dog breed with a good lineage and a certificate, like a Golden Retriever, can fetch Rp 5 million for a male pup and Rp 3 million for a female pup.
