The Covid Pandemic has dramatically altered people’s lives. Working from home has become the new normal for many people and many organisations have found that they don’t need to spend large proportions of their turnover leasing and maintaining spacious of ce buildings. We can, therefore, expect that there will be a surplus of vacant of ce buildings which will need to be redesigned to suit different purposes. It is highly likely that many will be recycled for residential accommodation.

The powerful cocktail of antioxidants combined in an avocado seed is exactly what your skin needs to become supple and clear. The antioxidants rebuild collagen repair cells damaged by free radicals and generally makes your skin look and feel healthier.

The largest proportion of the cost of constructing most buildings goes into the foundations and the structure that holds it all up. This is especially the case in earthquake prone areas where the structure must be able to withstand enormous forces.

Most pumps have a steel pressure tank attached which has air inside it, the air being contained in a rubber bladder. Water is not squishy like air and so the tank performs two functions, it stores pressure so the pump doesn’t need to switch on and off all the time and it provides an air cushion in the water system to absorb shocks when taps are suddenly turned on or off. Pressure tanks vary considerably in size from small ones that simply protect the pump to very large ones that can store large volumes of pressurised water, very useful if you have an unreliable electricity supply.

Frederich Ebenezer Pump was a clever man. The chairman of the Upper Wallop Serf Club, he invented a device consisting of a pipe with a piston and operated by a handle which enabled the serfs to draw water from wells. Used all over the world the village pump has been the centre of community life since time immoral. Often the place where important matters of local interest are discussed but also where young damsels meet dirty old men under cover of darkness, the village pump has been the subject of a plethora of songs (mostly of the bawdy variety).

Frederich’s great, great, great, great, grandson’s, cousin’s, uncle’s, husband’s, great, great, grandson, Cornelius Archibald Pump, was tinkering around in old Frederich’s garden shed one day when he came across a design for a rotating centrifugal water pump which old Fred had thoughtfully put aside until the electric motor was invented some 2 centuries later. This pump has become a ubiquitous design. It has an inlet and an outlet pipe and uses a rotating wheel (an impeller) with ns or vanes which uses centrifugal force to throw the water outwards with such force that it can push it along pipes. This clever device is used these days to mow down crowds of serfs when they are severely lacking in the gruntle department and become somewhat revolting. Water pumps are little heroes in our homes, they are generally very reliable working without attention often for years on end. They are inexpensive but an essential component in the systems that make our lives comfortable.

While the esh of the avocado is indeed packed full with nutrients and healthy fats, you may be surprised to learn that over percent of the total antio idant concentration in avocados, which is what essentially makes them the superfood they are, is am packed into the seed. It is worth taking a second or longer look at this rather wonderful appearing object. The pit or stone of any fruit is usually possessed of remarkable but not always tasty healing properties. In the case of the avocado and its stone, which are in fact botanically classi ed as a nut, the stone is a large smooth oval of a rich brown colour. As noted, seeds are powerful entities, packing enough life and power in a very small space to move and feed worlds. In which case, the avocado stone is an emperor among seeds with a numinous presence all of its own when contemplated for any length of time. If you’re in any doubt about this, instead of throwing the stone away, next time just set it in a bottle or container with the bottom eighth of it resting in water and see the result. Before too many days have elapsed something remarkable starts to happen. The top of the stone splits and a bud appears which begins to grow straight upward day by day. After eight inches or so of shoot a rich green leaf will appear on top. And the shoot continues upward. It all has a rather wonderful zen-like aesthetic (beats the of ce bizzy Lizzy anytime). In theory at least, you can re-pot it in your garden and are now on your way to your very own hydroponicsourced avocado orchard. Good luck with that. educes in ammation

Common Problems

The most common problem we nd with water pumps is “cycling” (often known as the “Balinese water torture”) the pump continually switching itself on and off. This is usually caused by leaks in the water system (such as running toilets), badly set pressure switches or by damaged pressure tank bladders.

The same bre found in avocado seeds that supports healthy digestion also helps you maintain a healthy weight.

Once the foundations have been constructed most buildings these days have a structure of columns, beams, concrete oors and staircases that form the skeleton of the building. These may be of reinforced concrete or steel girders which have to be very strong and are expensive to construct. For further information see: https://www. mr

We also considerably reduce the risk that some unforeseen circumstance crops up that could slow down or even prevent the project going ahead. dvantages that recycling a building can offer There are many major advantages with recycling rather than building from new. We can dramatically reduce the cost of the building Weconstruction.canconsiderably reduce the timescale to completion. We can reduce the risk of unforeseen circumstances. We can also make use of the surrounding infrastructure such as electrical and water supply and wastewater Wedisposal.canuse the original approvals and permits for the Webuilding.canconsiderably reduce the carbon emissions resulting from construction, the production of concrete is one of the world’s greatest producers of carbon dioxide.

The most common failing of concrete structures is the use of incorrect mixtures of cement, sand and aggregate and, most particularly, the addition of too much water to make it easier to pour. Most people don’t realise that the water does “dry off”, it is absorbed by ingredients in the cement and becomes part of the concrete itself. Too much water dramatically weakens the nished concrete. Concrete continues hardening for decades after it is forts mixed and poured. For these reasons it is important that the engineer checks the strength of the concrete. Before the new projects begin. When designing the new building within the existing structure the engineer can calculate changes to be made and advise as to what is and is not possible in terms of the loads that the structure must carry and the forces the building will be expected to resist. New walls to be built, equipment to be installed or operating vibrations will all have to be taken into consideration. For example a swimming pool on the top oor would add an enormous extra load on the structure.

In large buildings it is surprising just how much cost goes under the ground before the above ground construction begins. Strong foundations are often needed to stabilise the ground and provide support for the enormous weight of the building itself.

A year or so back in this column I wrote about the astonishing rise and worldwide popularity of the Avocado pear’. In that piece I noted that you needed to buy your avocados here in Bali with care. The imported ones were usually very expensive and usually delicious in texture and avor. owever on occasion you would get a dud, blackened, part-rotten, or hard and only softening when it went direct to black and rotten. The Bali avocado, which was much cheaper, invariably had a watery texture and lacked much of the avor of the imports. Presumably this had to do with climate and elevation. owever on occasion I had been lucky and been able to buy Bali avocados just as good as any import. If anybody can shed any light on why this is, and where one can nd the good Bali avocados, they would be rendering a signal service both to this correspondent and the community. Voice

Un nished Pro ects It is also very suitable for projects that, for whatever reason (such as running out of money), were not completed in the rst place. If the skeleton of a structure exists then the original planned designed can be followed or a totally new design can be created. uilding egulations and and oning Building regulations and zoning determine what you can and cannot build and what the building can be used for. These will need to be checked before project planning begins. These will vary considerably depending on where you live in the world but for an example of typical building regulations and zoning see: https://www.mr

The powerful combination of antioxidants in avocado seeds is responsible for a lot of major medical bene ts beyond the manifest nutritional bene ts. It is a remarkably effective anti-in ammatory, containing high concentrations of catechins and procyanidins antioxidants that reduce the in ammation associated with pain, swelling, stiffness and impaired joint function. This heroic pair of antioxidants is also what strives mightily to ensure heart health and optimum blood circulation.

Recycling is obviously most appropriate for warehouses, hotels, high rise apartments or of ce blocks however it can also be used for smaller buildings such as shops or houses as long as the building has a sound structure. When looking for a building to recycle we need to check the building to make sure it has a structure suitable for recycling. This may not be obvious on rst appearance and engineering advice is advised.

What can we recycle

It is important that, in the rebuilding process we do not damage or alter the original structure and we certainly should not add the weight of extra oors on the top of the existing building.

Of course, these days pumps are driven by electric motors and, in addition to the rotating impeller, have several additional components to improve their performance:

Plumbers and Electricians While problems in your water system can result in high water bills, they can also leave you with very high electricity bills. Finding and solving such problems may require a combination of both plumbing and electrical skills and an understanding of how the two Such problems are often beyond the ability of the average tukang who may tend to react to the individual symptoms rather than looking at the MEP systems as a whole to track down the cause. Failed attempts can be both frustrating and expensive.

Recent research has shown that extracts from the avocado seed have what’s called an pro-apoptotic in uence on leukemia cells, meaning that the extract caused leukemia cells to die while leaving healthy cells healthy and stable. For this reason, avocado seeds may provide an important way to ght or reduce the risk from other cancers also.

In Search of The Perfect Bali Avocado Don’t Chuck The Stone – Eat It… There are many ways you can save a lot of money on a building project. But perhaps one of the most cost effective is to recycle an existing building. We are talking about recycling rather than renovation here. What do we mean by ecycling To recycle a building we strip out everything including the roof, windows, doors, walls, ceilings, oors and the MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems). We take the building right back to the most expensive part of the building - the original basic structure. We then design and construct a new building based within the existing structure. The structure is hidden within the building so when completed the nal result looks like a totally new building. This can save us the ma or proportion of a pro ect cost

Engineering Considerations

The key person in carrying out such a project is the structural engineer. It is important that before the project starts the engineer examines the existing structure to assess what is and isn’t possible. e/she must check the strength of the concrete and/or steel and the load carrying capacity of the design. e/she must also of the make sure that the structure is well designed and built and has no signs of movement or damage.

The rst step is to remove the seed from the surrounding esh by cutting the avocado in half by cutting around the seed, twisting and separating the segments. Use a sharp heavy knife and with care whack into down into the seed and twist it out using the edge of a cutting board or similar to dislodge the seed from your knife. Then carefully cut it into quarters, which is now quite easy to do. Next, throw the quarters into a powerful blender and process into a ne powder. ivide the results into two each being enough for one serving and either use or store in the refrigerator. Now you have the basis for making the smoothie of your choice, but be aware that the avocado seed powder is quite bitter due to its tannins, and choose the other ingredients of your smoothie accordingly.

Avocado seeds have long been used in their native homeland of Mexico and Central America to treat a range of digestive issues, including dysentery and gastric ulcers. Today, avocado seeds are used to ensure healthy overall digestive function through the potent concentration of antioxidants and bre, supporting your gastrointestinal tract via the growth and maintenance of healthy gut bacteria.

THE SHOW M ST GO ON That was our motto for this year’s irtual niversity Fair. nd go on it did the list of schools participating this year was larger than ever before. BIS hosted more than 0 participating niversities, with students joining from all around Indonesia. Students from our sister school, SM , and Students chose from thirty-two workshops and had an opportunity to meet individually and in small groups with university representatives. I have not really decided on which university I want to attend once I’ve graduated, nor do I have an exact idea of what I want to study. lthough, I do know that I am interested in degrees like E, or multidisciplinary social science programs similar to it. big positive of the fair was that it introduced me to various universities that I would have otherwise not considered. It was a great opportunity for me to explore the different programs offered by universities from all over the world, as it exposed me to the multitude of paths that I could take once I’ve graduated. The workshops I attended were hosted by the niversity of Essex and St. Thomas niversity. I also spoke with representatives from the niversity of Sydney, Iowa State niversity, niversity of Glasgow, niversity of Toronto, and the niversity of British Columbia. My impressions of these universities were wonderful as everyone I talked to was incredibly kind and helpful. lthough the fair was very early in the morning in their time one, they were all enthusiastic in letting me know all that I wanted to know about their respective universities and answered all of my questions to the best

The Alzheimer’s Organization suggests ways to give yourself a better chance of doing just that. And the number one item is not a surprise. I’m on the elliptical and treadmill machines, I study a foreign language so I’m exercising my brain as well as my body. It also takes the tedium out of going nowhere fast. Photo from Bogies for Bali 2021, Handara Golf & Resort, Bali Sponsored by Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset [RCBUS] and Sababay Wineries, Bogies for Bali is a day and a half of fun for you. This annual fundraiser allows RCBUS to fund three humanitarian projects in Indonesia designed to boost local economies, provide clean water sources, and protect the environment. This is your invitation to come and join the fun at Bogies for Bali 2022.

Festivities begin on Friday evening, 9 September, for those participants who arrive on the night before the golfing event. Handara was kind enough to extend special rates to those people who wish to play golf on Saturday morning, but do not wish to make a long drive before tee-off time. All those participants will be treated to a delicious BBQ dinner at Breeze Terrace prepared by Handara’s talented chefs. This enchanting outdoor buffet will include a variety of grilled meats and seafood, grilled vegetables, salads, and extra tasty desserts. To ensure that a good time is experienced by everyone, the BBQ will be accompanied by a bonfire, a putting contest, and a chipping contest.

RCBUS belongs to Rotary International, one of the premier service organizations worldwide, with 1.2 million members and over 35,000 Rotarian clubs around the world. The mission of Rotary International is to ‘provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.’ Fundraising for these causes is often an essential part of a Rotary Club’s projects, as critical services and infrastructure require money.

On a worldwide level much hoopla surrounds waste management and the effort to clean up our soiled and littered planet. Some countries and communities are way ahead of the pack and most every country in the world is doing something to contain, limit or manage their waste. Cleanup has many guises. ut here does all that gathered aste go ou re looking at a mountain of asteables that are disposed of e ery day detritus from gardens and households, restaurants, hotels and other small and big businesses, industrial and agricultural aste, mainly toxic Resourcechemicals. management and zero aste are nice buzz phrases and embrace some lofty principles and philosophy. he accepted de nition is that zero aste is a goal for people to embrace a lifestyle that emulates sustainable natural cycles here all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use. On the theoretical le el, proponents of zero aste are talking about ideal conditions, about our connection to nature here, by the ay, there is NO aste as Mother Nature recycles e erything and our role of being a part of it instead of feeling apart from it. hey ill tell you that aste is not aste until it s asted, hich is something e should a oid or stri e to ban from our life.

Conclusion s zero aste a chimera Understand that zero aste is a philosophy, not yet reality, a guidance to approach the perfect zero aste ays of nature. n order to attain that goal our aste economy must be morphed into a circular economy here aste is eliminated and resources are continually re-used on a model of production that practices the borro , use, reuse and return philosophy. ero aste on a practical le el means e do not aste or aste less. n the end e all bear responsibility to ork to ards a zero aste life, hether e are consumers, politicians, or corporate big igs. As indi iduals, consumers and professionals e can choose to consume less or more responsibly to bear pressure on producers by refusing to buy their un holesome products or their un-compostable or unrecyclable packaging e can pressure our politicians to enact better aste management la s. t is still an uphill struggle but you can start here and no to do your bit to be a responsible aste manager.

an o iv a o ast if in Ba i

By nes ynn

It starts with production xperts claim that aste is inherently a design problem and should be recti ed at the beginning by designing the product s discarded materials to become the source for other users, exactly as happens in nature. n other ords, products and their packaging should be designed to be re-used, recycled, repaired or repurposed. ith the understanding that production should also use clean energy, i.e. non-toxic or natural resources or elements, to manufacture them. he producer also needs packaging to safeguard his products during transportation but currently, not much is done to ensure the recyclable or compostable nature of this packaging so that e are inundated ith un anted plastic containers or rappers, foil packets, Styrofoam packing and other unnatural materials that do not recycle themsel es.

ero aste thinking must start ith producers, designers and engineers ho should be rethinking the planned obsolescence philosophy of manufactured goods and build more durable products, re-engineer thro -a ay packaging and design something that precludes single-use packaging. Computer hard are and appliances should be built so that their arious parts can be separated and reco erable chemicals and toxic materials should be substituted ith natural products. he resources used to build the products should be in estigated, re ie ed and replaced ith sustainable or rene able energy to t in ith zero aste philosophy, heeding the ca eat that e en compostable packaging may re uire trees to be felled. Ha e you e er thought about the side effects of aste Climate change springs to mind, air pollution and toxic drainage in our soils and ater resources. Also diseases caused by bad en ironments and air, soil and ater pollution social and cultural impacts. he list is depressing.

20 TOKO BUKU

All this to say that e end up ith a lot of aste after the product is eaten, consumed, installed or in use. n ali a lot of that is readily isible as garbage by the side of the roads, in the subaks, creeks, ri ers and ocean. ou also need to think about the electronic aste ith toxic components you produce after you upgrade that old computer, buy that ne hand phone or tablet, e en replace your dead batteries or burned-out light bulbs. hat about your household toxics like paint, sol ents, cleaning products here do your old appliances and cars end up Here in ali, none of that gets properly recycled or collected hen its end-of-life phase is reached.

o understand proper aste management, you ha e to apply hole system thinking, from beginning to end of the product cycle - hich is often not the case. People tend to zero in on parts of the system like the production of consumables, the extraction of fossil fuels or ra materials to produce these consumables, the transportation and the huge carbon footprint of the product being mo ed from manufacturer to consumer, the packaging for those products hich can take on many forms, the aste disposal and the intangibles such as health and social impacts, the struggle bet een eco hich embraces all of us and ego indi idual needs and ants .

ransportation causes a huge carbon footprint as many products are shipped from far-a ay places. A good deal is of necessity like in ali, here local production is ery limited. ut among all the imports, ask yourself ho many are really necessary and ho many are sheer ants instead of needs. o e really need blueberries gro n in Chile, or beans from enya Present initiatives Many communities in the estern orld ha e made great strides in managing their aste products. Household and industrial aste is collected, sorted, recycled, composted or other ise di erted from land lls or incineration. Some places, like San rancisco manages to di ert 0 of their collected aste hich is the highest recycling and compost rate in North America communities in landers come close ith the highest residential aste di ersion rate of urope ith others are not far behind. Some countries in urope ha e enacted la s to force producers to take back their containers or packaging, e en their obsolete or end-of-life products for repurposing or recycling. n ali only ery modest results ha e been booked regardless of the effort that has gone into containing and managing some of our aste. Plastic bags ha e been banned though not from all places, a fe recycling centres are in operation and cleanup cre s are most e ery here. Ho e er, ith our o er o ing land lls and untold aste that still makes its ay to the seas surrounding us, e are still near the bottom of the orld ide cleanup effort. e ha e some ay to go to come e en close to the zero aste goal. aste collection and management is still not a big priority here and the go ernment is hardly supporti e in terms of pro iding ade uate funding for the setup of better systems.

Whether readers are planning a trip to this archipelagic nation or just fantasi ing a out one ourney Through Indonesia adroitly co ines the est features of oth a picture ook and a travel guide. With hundreds of vi rant full-colour photos the large for at ook or eBook takes readers on a tour of the world s ost agni cent string of islands. This is a different kind of illustrated book whose captions and explanatory text are quite readable in and of themselves and not just serve to identify the images. The words are just as important as the photographs, unusual for such a lavishly illustrated book. The attractiveness of the page design also begs the question of why can’t all high school and university text books be as informative and all-encompassing as this “picture” book? Author Tim Hannigan is the most foremost travel writer and historian specializing on Indonesia working today, a premier interpreter of all things Indonesian. One earmark of his extensive travel in the islands is his frequent use of Indonesian words and phrases (with English translations) in his writing about the country. Whereas his book Geek in Indonesia is about the contemporary, quirky contradictions of Indonesia’s culture and society, his Journey through Indonesia takes a more traditional and idealized approach to country’s iconic attractions.

One two-page map on the contents page shows the country’s most famous attractions, with national parks and World Heritage sites delineated by red dots. Small inset maps would have been helpful, such as one indicating Sumbawa’s position in the string of islands trailing off to the east of Bali. The instructions for climbing Lombok’s redoubtable Mt. Rinjani are so detailed that one yearns for a map in order to trace the way to the top.

Since the physical book would be too unwieldy to carry while traveling, luckily there is an eBook edition with enhanced typesetting, page ip capabilities and searchable which obviates the need for an index (the physical book doesn’t have an index). The hundreds of meticulously detailed captions would’ve been much easier to read if the typeface was black instead of grey, a color probably chosen so as to not draw too much attention away from the 400 stunning images. Although the photos are all stock photos, they are high quality and well selected.

Besides including knowledgeable and wide-ranging descriptions of its arts, ceremonies, religious beliefs, archaeological sites, crafts and wildlife species, there is one page of travel tips in the backmatter and plenty of other information about low-key eco-tourism and backpacker destinations: the remote North Sumatran village of Tangkahan for its elephant-backed explorations of surrounding forests; the freshwater high mountain Lake Tawar, Aceh’s answer to Lake Toba; the isolated Meratus Mountains in the heart of Borneo for river-rafting; the idyllic Gili Islands off west Lombok where no motorized transport is allowed; Nembrala on the southern shore of Rote, a small island off West Timor; the Chinese outpost of Singkawang in West Kalimantan with its shop houses, temples and cafes wafting with the avours of authentic Chinese cooking; the tiny Derawan Archipelago, a 20-minute speedboat ride off the north coast of East Kalimantan, 31 barely inhabited and scarcely visited islands of coral reefs, sharks and manta rays; surfer’s hangouts Batu

The word “Journey” in the title gives a hint of the book’s ambitious scope that covers one end of the archipelago to the other. Part Two, the actual “journey” part of the book, comprises 80 pages, more than 62% of the total book, a condensed nitty gritty of what there is to see and do in this largest of island nations. Bali, everyone’s darling, gets an outsized 15 pages of treatment, consistent with its larger than life place in the world’s imagination.

Granted, not the very latest travel information is provided, the province of a top-notch up-to-date guidebook. The 938 km trans-Java toll road inaugurated in January 2019 didn’t make the print run. The book also doesn’t shed much light on Indonesia’s harsh political, social and environmental realities: i.e. the bombing of churches and other interfaith strife, Bali’s suffocating traf c congestion or the fact that Jakarta is sinking into the sea at the rate of two inches per year. What criticism he does level at Indonesia is couched in decorous and euphemistic terms. But of course pointing out the country’s shortcomings is not the author’s purpose.

Journey Through Indonesia is not just a coffee table book but a complete visual and explanatory introduction to a vast watery realm with all the diversity of an entire continent. The well written and knowledgeable text give the images depth, making it the perfect introduction to this most colourful of countries, ideal for both Indonesia enthusiasts, armchair travelers and those actively planning explorations in JourneyIndonesia.Through Indonesia: An Unforgettable Journey from Sumatra to Papua by Tim Hannigan, Tuttle Publishing 2018, ISBN 978-0-8048-4711-7, hardcover, 128 pages.
