The Frugal Balinist ✱ Bali Car Boot. Don’t make the mistake of parking your car all night on Ubud’s main road, Jl. Raya Ubud. Aimed to ease traffic congestion, parking on a number of the town’s traffic arteries such as Jl. Cok Sudarsana, Jl. Hanoman and Jl. Monkey Forest Ubud is now illegal. This new rule also applies to motorcycles. Ubud’s Transportation Service (Dishub), working together with the local police, now deflate the tires of illegally parked cars as a simple yet effective remedy for the high volumes of circulating traffic. They also dispense tickets and will soon tow and impound vehicles. We knew about the parking areas next to the Monkey Forest and Ubud Central Parking at Puri Lukisan (which has shuttle buses), but they were too far away from the hotel we were staying in. The local taxi mafia are shamelessly exploitive, asking for as much as Rp50,000 for a short ride. We put on our spare quickly before the traffic police made their rounds; we heard the fine is Rp250,000 plus one month in jail.
✱ Dog Stuff: As our poor long-suffering Luna can silently attest, never use commercial human shampoo on a dog. She escaped while shampooing, leaving the toxic substance on her skin which soon broke out in open sores and lesions. This eventually opened her up to scabies. We have spent a total of Rp675,000 so far on shots, medicines and visits to the vet and she still isn’t cured. *Use Bravecto to get rid of dog (and human) ticks; lasts 3 months: 3 prescriptions Rp250.000/month; 6 months Rp125.000/month; 12 months Rp62.500/month.

✱ Sundanese Skill Sets. The Sundanese people of West Java have long been famous for well-crafted shoes, leather goods, handbags, purses, hats, shoulder bags, shirts and textiles. Many outlets in Denpasar for Sundanese hand-make articles: Bandung Toko, Jl. Kartini 29; Bandung Collection, Jl. Imam Bonjol18. For shoes, look for Toko Sepatu Cibaduyut everywhere. Prices are not as cheap as in Bandung, but cheaper than most shops in Bali. Many stay open until 10 pm. ✱ Stupid Supplements. There’s no conclusive evidence that dietary vitamin and mineral supplements prevent chronic disease. As reported in an April 2018 New York Times article, rigorous long-term clinical trials have found that neither vitamin E nor folic acid supplements do anything to protect the heart. High-doses of vitamin E can in fact even pose a higher risk of heart failure, prostate cancer and death! *The belief that a daily supplement of fish oil prevents heart attacks and strokes is also not supported by research and now totally discredited.
✱ Bargain Books. Since 1986, Ganesha has operated a book buy-back scheme, a great way to save money on books and also a neat way to free up space in your travel bag. After purchasing a used book in one of their stores in Ubud or Sanur, you can bring it back and receive half of your original purchase price back. You can either spend the returned money in-store, or just take the cash. They will also buy your used books and give you a fair price, but the books must be in good condition and fairly new. Even better, when books in their two stores become too tatty and unsellable they place them on a stand outside and give the books away free. As well as the trading of paperbacks, Ganesha bookshops also sells new, rare and out-of-print books on Indonesia which are sold outright and are not part of their buy-back scheme. ✱ Skip Specialty Cleaners! To absorb grease stains, place a mound of fresh cornstarch on non-washable or delicate materials like suede or silk and simply let it sit. *Pour sugar over spilled nail polish on hardwood or tile; the paint will adhere to the absorbent sugar and allow you to then sweep up the sugar and the nail polish along with it. *When glass breaks, use a broom and dustpan to pick up the large pieces, then for those tiny widely scattered shards take a slice of bread and pat up the slivers which will stick to the squishy bread (same procedure can be done using the cut side of a potato). *Ketchup or Tabasco smeared on a rag cleans tarnish from brass and copper after allowing it to sit for 5 minutes. *Ketchup can also be used to remove rust from cast iron. *Olive oil nicely rehydrates dried-out wood from cutting boards to furniture.
✱ Creative Welding. Take advantage of the low costs on Bali for designing, fashioning or retrofitting all kinds of iron implements and equipment. A tukang las (welder) can create or repair dish racks and range hoods. He can convert a Rp50,000 sickle with a wooden handle to one with an unbreakable iron handle for only Rp20,000 (iron lasts long and doesn’t slip, whereas wood eventually needs to be replaced). Or replace an old worn out pot handle with a new iron one. Find plans on Google Images and order a bike rack, tool and towel rack, barbecue grill, fire pit, pet gate, window bars, spiral staircase, dog cage, kitchen pot lid holder, candelabra, shop stool, bench, garden fence, etc. Tip: If you buy the iron yourself and give it to the welder, it’s cheaper. Welders charge by how much solder they use. For our canopied arbor, Mita paid Rp150,000 for labor and solder. She paid Rp150,000 for iron. To make an outside ladder to the top of our water tower, it costs Rp2,600,000 for iron and labor in the shop and then was brought and installed on site.

✱ Goodbye Premium. Although in very high demand, this low cost, low-octane and less environmentally-friendly grade of gasoline is gradually being phased out. Not all gas stations (pom bensin) in Bali carry this cheaper gas which costs Rp6,750 per liter as compared to Pertalitebranded gas which is Rp7,800/liter. Stations intentionally reduce the stock of Premium as they prefer to sell non-subsidized gasoline - Pertalite and Pertamax - because they receive a smaller margin from selling Premium. Sometimes you have to drive around to find one with short lines. Look for stations crowded with public minivans and motorcycles because Premium is usually sold at gas stations frequented by public transportation vehicles. You can tell which stations carry it from the road sign and the sign displayed at the top of the gas pump. Expect prices for all grades of gas to steadily rise because of decreasing subsidies, increasing global crude oil prices and the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar.

Bali Barongs Bring Home A Swag Of Medals amazing performances from these up and coming athletes. Over the course of the weekend, the swimmers continued to challenge themselves to achieve their individual goals as well as building a fantastic team dynamic. Team spirit and camaraderie among the group members was clearly evident in the the way they continued to motivate each other throughout the meet, with special focus on new teammates - some of them first time competitors at such an event. Olivia Kerr Muir won the Age Champion for 11 year old girls followed by Nadia Felicia Winkler in 2nd place. 10 year old Emerald Kerr Muir came 3rd place in her overall age group. Both Kerr Muir girls were very keen to compete, despite the fact that they were only back visiting Bali on a brief vacation from the UK! The Bali Barongs girls relay teams won two gold medals and one silver medal while the boys relay team managed to win two bronze medals. Just four years after the Bali Barongs Swim Team was initiated, the team has successfully sent 13 young athletes to compete in the Aquadragons Open 2018, an event organised by the Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS). Just under 250 swimmers from 16 swim teams converged on Jakarta to compete over the weekend of April 7 and 8th. Under the talented leadership skills of former Olympian and Coach Luisa Striani, the Bali Barongs finished 7th in the overall team scores with
Medals and new personal bests were set by Charli Indiana Veale, Ezra Setianto, Laura Pet, Harrison Broue, Ayden Malik Grossinsky and Eashaan Rajebsohale. Amazing swimming improvements were witnessed in pool performances by India Campbell Bite, Amelie Von Harrach, Dinda Winkler and Dylan Jones. The swim squad is always looking for new swimmers to join this fantastic team. Coach Luisa trains at Finns Recreation Club through the JSA program, starting from after school

classes with excellent progression towards competitive swim squad training. With her personal encouragement and gentle yet persistent coaching, the Bali Barongs have developed into a high performance team, excited to share their passion for swimming with newcomers. Bali Barong athletes compete again this month in the upcoming BSSA inter school swim meet on April 24th, many swimming in healthy competition against each other for line honours. The athletes in this enthusiastic junior swim team hail from different backgrounds, ages and schools across the island with a good complement of swimmers from Canggu Community School, Bali Island School, Australian Independent School and Pro-Education. Their passion for swimming and commitment to an often gruelling early morning and afternoon training program have brought them together as a team - and it shows. Success at swim meets such as this year’s Aquadragons Open only comes from hard work, dedication, team spirit and of course, a good coach!

A Future for Bali Traditions in a Contemporary World (13 May) The Bali Culture Club present their fifth lecture on a range of interesting and compelling topics. This month’s topic is particularly interesting with regards to Bali traditions which have interested travelers and anthropologists across the globe and are so very transparent in our daily lives in Bali. Australian Peter J. Wilson and Balinese Made Sidia have worked together over twenty years to create innovative ways to communicate Balinese culture based on timeless traditions, making Bali’s culture accessible to new generations of Indonesians and international audiences. These events are free and worth attending particularly if you have a keen interest in learning more about Bali’s traditions and how they have developed in modern society. Evening on the Green (28 April) Charities are perhaps one of the most important parts of the community. Charities nurture, repair, build and sustain society and so many charities in Bali are making a tremendous difference to the lives of so many under privileged and in need. This collaborative event is set to raise funds for four charities. The first is the Bali Dog Refuge (BARC) who run a clinic called Good Karma in Ubud and focus on adoption and rehabilitation of dogs in need of care. Bali International Women’s Association (BIWA) and their good causes will also benefit. Rumah Sehat is another beneficiary, a small, not for profit organization operating in one of the poorest regions of Karangasam in East Bali where they run a free clinic providing the local people with basic health care, dental treatment, nutritional education, natal care and access to education for the children. Finally, Trash Hero Sanur is an organization that creates sustainable, community-based projects that remove existing waste and reduce future waste by inspiring long-term behavior change. To support these foundations, an evening of non-stop music with 4 fabulous bands, games of chance and skill, food, beer, a wine bar and mini bazaar will keep guests busy and entertained. This is an adult only event and tickets are available from Hattens, Aroma Spa Retreat, BARC, BIWA, Rumah Sehat or Sanur Trash Heroes. There are no door sales so do buy your tickets in advance. No better way to spend Mother’s Day this year than to join our own CNN International Hero of the Year, Robin Lim, at Bridges Restaurant on Jalan Raya Ubud, and help her raise money for her world-respected non-profit. The Bridges’ Foundation Bumi Sehat event has become a cherished tradition, taking place for the eighth year in a row on Sunday May 18 from 11am till 3pm. Chef Wayan Sukarta offers a delicious sharing brunch and we will toast the mothers with cocktails, mocktails and great wines, entertained by the classical guitar music of Tatang Nofrizal, in the restaurant’s beautiful riverside dining room overlooking gorgeous views of the green jungle and the old Campuan bridge. Ibu Robin Lim is known for her relentless efforts to provide better health care for disadvantaged pregnant women and to enable natural births and childcare in Bali and Aceh, and also abroad when natural disasters strike. Bumi Sehat was strongly involved in providing and coordinating help for the evacuation camps in Bali caused by the recent Mount Agung eruption. Bridges donates a percentage of proceeds from this event to the foundation. For more info: www.bumisehatfoundation.org, and www.bridgesbali.com/ events.
One of Australia’s hardest travelling outfits, world music fusion act Dubarray, kicked off the journey in Europe five years ago, building solid foundations with a busy live touring schedule. Known for high-energy festival appearances, the band has released three albums and four singles so far, returning to tour Europe four times. Haji Basim solo show; Tuesday May 1, 8pm; entrance: Rp100k. Dubarray Live Performance; May 2, 8pm; entrance: Rp100k. INDIGENOUS DANCERS FROM ACEH TO OZ We’ve written before about Taksu Gallery’s tenacious efforts to bring together performers and artists from all over the region for the very first Indigenous Celebration ever held in Ubud. It has been a mammoth undertaking, including lots of fundraising to pay for airfares and accommodation for these big groups, who often come from very poor communities. The event is finally happening at Arma Gallery in Ubud from May 11-13. We’ll be mesmerised I know, by these incredible artists who are flying in from all over Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia. Bring your camera to capture their costumes and the energy of their traditional dance forms. You can find the full schedule of indigenous artists, musicians and dancers at www.indigenouscelebration.art/schedule.

BALI WOMEN DRIVERS Here’s a very safe option for women travellers – and a spectacularly good idea – an organisation of professional Bali drivers who are women.Once you’ve been in Bali a while, you get to know a range of excellent professional drivers, and with most of them I feel “safe as houses”, but this would have been very reassuring on my first trip!
STUNNER MUSIC AT BETEL NUT Music and event venue Betel Nut is rocking, with cool performances back to back in the first week of May. USA multiinstrumentalist, Haji Basim returns to BetelNut on May 1 after a knock-out solo performance there last year, with the hard-touring Australian world music fusion group Dubarray on stage the following night. Fresh from the BaliSpirit Festival, Haji Basim is award winning, passionate and charismatic, mixing folk, devotional, and world music on guitar, banjo, ukulele and sitar. A singer-songwriter, he calls his refreshing, upbeat music Urban Folk – it’s somewhere between the intimacy of Trevor Hall and the sensuality of Xavier Rudd.

TEDxUBUD So excited to take part in the sold-out TEDxUbud, meeting and listening to the everyday heroes who will take the stage on May 5 to talk about pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo as they explore this year’s theme: Seen/Unseen. It’s an extraordinary event, with inspiration from speakers and performers, delicious food, and hundreds of curious minds to spark exciting conversations. Just two of the speakers - Angga Dwi Martha, UN Youth Advisor for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Indonesia, who holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Indonesia, focusing on Youth Policy in Southeast Asia, and anthropologist Dr. Kelli Swazey, researching the big, raucous funeral ceremonies that are at the centre of social life in Tana Toraja - as she explores a culture that cares for the bodies of dead relatives years after they have passed away, teaching that relationships with loved ones don’t simply end when breathing does.

13 day is different in so many ways. I recall in my former life as an accountant that each day felt like the one before and the one after. But no day in the performing arts is the same. If I’m working on a production, I arise early and gather my thoughts. I swim in my pool. I brief my team. I prepare for rehearsals.
Peter Wilson: Theatrical Art Director
Peter Wilson was born in Perth, Western Australia. Encouraged by his parents, he showed an interest in music and theatre from an early age. His mother sang in the choir at the University of Western Australia and he was taken along to theatre shows as a child. For more than 40 years, Peter has written, directed and performed in theatrical productions all over the world. Sharing his time between Melbourne and Bali, he currently has several theater projects underway in Australia and works as a theatre director and consultant in Indonesia. He produced the Pearl of the South Sea at the Jakarta Aquarium Indonesia in Jakarta and Bali Agung at the Bali Safari & Marine Park in Bali, a spectacular presentation that has been running for eight years. What first made you interested in puppetry? I saw a Sydney-based puppet company in Perth when I was about 5 or 6. They presented a work titled The Tintookies, an iconic Australia show that was touring the country at that time. I was mesmerized by the lively spirit of the puppets. The experienced embedded itself deep down in my psyche. As a teenager, I worked for a pro-amateur community theatre company in Perth and then for a dance company, both unpaid jobs. It wasn’t until I moved from Perth to Melbourne in 1975 that my interest in puppetry was ignited. I quickly found work in a small puppetry company, my first paid gig as an artist. How did your theatrical career start? I formerly trained and worked as an accountant but was actually just interested in one thing and one thing only – becoming a performer on stage. I finally made the lifechanging decision to abandon a well-paid career in accounting to become a dancer and puppeteer. In the late 70s, I joined a group of artists who formed a company known as Handspan Theatre. What was your first big success? My time with Handspan Theatre earned me an international reputation as a puppeteer, director and teacher. In the late 80s, I received rave reviews for the production of Cho Cho San, which further established me as a puppeteer. In the 90s, my desire to direct led me to Canberra to run a puppetry company called Skylark, which went on to great success with its international touring program. An invitation to direct the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games set me on the path to putting together large scale events for the next 18 years. Have you performed frequently abroad? A big chunk of my career has been producing theater internationally, most recently in Cambodia. This goes with the territory as we artists always have an interest in broadening our arts practice overseas and expanding our work in our respective art form. I have been fortunate to have been travelling as a performer and director all over the world with successful productions in cities including New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Geneva, Amsterdam, Quebec, Tokyo, Beijing and Kuala Lumpur. What you have been up to in Bali? In 2010, the Bali Safari & Marine Park invited me to direct and write the script for Bali Agung, the story of King Jaya Pungus and his Chinese princess. The production is now in its 8th year. My association with the park also involved the creation of a number of other productions staged on a daily basis, including the nighttime Fire Show, Tiger Show, Elephant Show and Hanuman stage performance that celebrates Indonesian animal and bird life.
What are the most common myths about your profession? I often hear that artists have it easy. But success depends so much on an artist’s passion to develop their practice in as many ways as possible. Unless the artist is a famous stage, film or television star, artists don’t get paid much in the world of theater. We struggle to put food on the table, particularly in the early years of our careers. The fire in the belly to make art is what drives us. Once you’re hooked on your particular art form, there’s no looking back and sometimes years go by in which you’re simply scraping by to make ends meet. I’ve learned that invariably we do our jobs well if we are paid a fair and appropriate fee.
C/BT/I-14 Feb 18
Any advice to young people wanting to get a start in the theatrical arts? Hang in there. Don’t give up. Perseverance, consistency, hard work and creative skills are the hallmarks of a successful career in the arts. If a career in the arts feels like it is embedded into your DNA, simply follow your dream. Success will come eventually. But be aware that success can be measured in many ways. It’s not only about the money but about that intangible and serenely satisfying feeling at having completed a work of art, choreographed a scene, written a play or produced a beautiful opera.

What’s the best way to get a job in theater? The artists I work with here in Bali are all connected to Made Sidia’s sanggar in Bona Kelod. Made has established a training program for children as young as 4 years of age through to teenagers and young adults. I know of no internships but ISI, the performing arts university here in Denpasar, is a great institute to begin learning about all aspects of the performing arts. As for the job scene elsewhere, I advise attaching yourself to a theater company. The work will come. Money is not the end game. Feeding your creative drive is the key to success. What do you enjoy most about your work? The fact that I’m still doing theatre after 43 years in the industry often surprises me. I love the challenge of making a new work, brainstorming new ideas and working across cultures to create cross-cultural theatre productions. I love watching young emerging artists grow into their art form and ardently pursue their careers. Puppeteers are deeply connected everywhere and I enjoy the camaraderie and friendships with fellow artists all over the globe.
C/BT/G-13 Sept 17
What are your goals for the future? To remain healthy while I pursue my various endeavors, to continue to train artists, to create new theatrical productions, to travel to new places, to always be curious and open to new ideas and concepts and to keep my cheeky and playful manner constantly alive.

Cafe des Artistes was once the lone restaurant on Jln.Bisma, Ubud. 15 years later and there are now many but it still stands out from the crowd! Professional management, excellent long term staff, an interesting menu and a relaxed garden setting have all contributed to its longevity. The Belgian influence remains [Pate des Ardennes, Carbonades à la Flamande, etc.] together with a nicely balanced menu of local, Asian and European dishes, all at affordable prices. Every month they also offer a 3 course special menu, each of which can be ordered separately. This month it begins with a traditional French Onion Soup, thick and rich as it should be, topped with crouton aux gratin. The main is Lamb Chops [pictured], imported from Australia, just seared, with garlic, rosemary and butter sauce. It is served with grilled zucchini and eggplant, together with a baked potato. Dessert is a Nutella Cream Cheese Mousse with crumble and whipped cream. A place to dine and relax!
Aya Street is a Peruvian restaurant on Jln. Petitenget, Kerobokan. Ceviche is almost the national dish of Peru, although it is commonly served at all coastal areas of South America. Its origins are from the fishing fleets of years gone by that would be at sea for many days on end. The food of the fishermen was to eat some of the fresh fish that they had just caught, gutting it and cutting it up into chunks whilst fresh, marinating it in squeezed lemon juice then adding pepper, salt, onions and peppers. It was easy to eat whilst they were fishing. Naturally at Aya Street Ceviche is their signature dish. Pulpo, Spanish for octopus, is so difficult to prepare and cook but here they manage to do it properly. There are also many other seafood dishes but one meat dish that is very popular is their Lomo, another Peruvian specialty, marinated beef strips with tomato and onions.

Chop Steakhouse is a local operation. They are the latest of the many new steakhouses in Bali, but with something quite different. Situated on Jln. Raya Kuta, in the middle of ‘Little China’ they offer ‘Meltique’ steak prepared with the Japanese method of injecting the meat with fats to increase the tenderness and taste. The steaks [Wagyu rib-eye, sirloin and tenderloin] are served, cross-sliced, on boards. They also offer steaks done, Korean BBQ style. Luca’s Pizza is the latest new arrival on Jln Hayam Wuruk, Renon, very close to the Popular Supermarket, with a large parking area in front. Luca’s is a small local pizza chain that started with one outlet at Made’s Warung in Seminyak. This is their 4th outlet, the others are at Canggu and Berawa. The pizzas are more or less original except that the Hawaiian is only with pineapple and no ham and the Marinara is devoid of seafood. They offer a few of their own specials; Joglo [mushroom, shallot, black olive], Chicken [shredded], Simon [mushroom, black olive, salami] and Avocado. There are 19 different toppings you can order as an extra. Shady Shack, on Jln. Tanah Barak, Canggu can be best described as a trendy café. Whether that is good or bad purely depends on your personal preferences. Places such as this, catering mainly for the vegetarian, even vegan, market, can sometimes disappoint those who want a bit more. It is quite large very well designed, with a garden area overlooking rice paddies. It offers healthy food and that even include Burgers, but these are with Tempe or Halloumi. As in many vegetarian restaurants much of the food comes in bowls, just many different combinations of raw and cooked food. Rice, Tempe, Halloumi, Nori Seaweed or just Veggie. If this is your scene then this will be foodie heaven for you.
Baby Monkeys is a warung on Jln. Sudamala at the southern end of Sanur. Thatchroofed and multi coloured you could call it a rainbow room. It is very local, and unpretentious, which is what many people want when they are in Bali. You don’t come here expecting fine dining but what you get is to eat simple well cooked local food in a happy environment. All the standard dishes are available; Kecap, Asem Manis etc., with whatever you want, chicken, pork, fish. There is Nasi and Mie in all of their combinations and the basic international dishes such as Burgers and Wraps. Open early for breakfast and the fun continues all day and night. Very reasonable prices result in the place having many locals as regulars.
Taco Casa has been one of the success stories of Ubud. Whilst Mexican was one of the first foreign cuisines introduced to Bali in the 80’s it was not till recent years that it was available in Ubud. Taco Casa has been full virtually every day since it opened. So full, that it has now moved to larger premises, just 30 metres away. Double the size and still full every night! On Raya Pengosekan at the site that was once the Brasco store, but still only with street parking.

The Ubud Food Court Food courts originated in Asia. They were a natural transition from the open areas of street food [such as the wonderful car park on Orchard Rd in Singapore, circa 70’s] when those open spaces became multi story shopping complexes. Only Thailand has retained pure street food in preference to food courts. They are usually sited in busy office areas where a quick and good meal is necessary for lunch or after work. A few attempts to open them in Bali have not always been successful, the one at Denpasar’s Tiara Dewata a rare exception. The Ubud Food Court is a quality conversion of a large warehouse, the very high ceiling creating a relatively cool atmosphere. At the entrance is a large pleasant open terrace area which has already proved to be a popular eating spot. Upon entering, on the right, is an air-con outlet from Mason Gourmet Foods [part of [the re-branded Bali Adventure Tour Group, now Mason Adventures]. It offers product from their Kedewatan bakery. An extensive range of breads [Corn, Dark Rye, etc.] and even some Gluten Free breads [Pumpkin with dried fruits, Rosemary & Olive Oil], pastries and cakes. Aussie Meat Pies and Sausage Rolls. You can build your own sandwich or panini, and finish with fruity gelato [pictured]. Next door is an outlet from the Golden Monkey Express. Many dim sum including Har Gow [whole prawn dumpling], Fenkow Vegetarian dumplings and my favourite the Crystal dumplings, prawn and chive in a translucent casing. The steamed buns can be BBQ Pork or Shanghai’s Xiao Long Boa [steamed in a pork broth]. Of the fried variety the Duck Spring Rolls are sensational. Roasted Cantonese meats are also available, chicken, duck and pork. To finish a steam bun, egg custard or pandan. Warung Bangkok is a surprise! Mendez, the goat man from the hill cooking Thai. His warung is famous for the Javanese
marinated roast goat that he serves but his many Thailand visits [even to the Blue Elephant Cooking School] have paid off, he does Thai just as well. Simple bar snacks such as Fish Cakes and the tasty Garee Pups [puff pastry triangles wrapped around minced chicken, potato, cilantro and onion]. Thai Chicken Basil [Kra Pao], minced chicken, basil and chilli, fried egg on top. Red Curries can be Prawn and pineapple, Beef and potato or Duck and lychee. Also green curries and dry stir fries. Not all of the goats were left on the hill there is also a Kha Soi from Isaan, a noodle soup with goat meat. Bali Laughing Buddha also offers a couple of great bar snacks; Samosas [vegetarian curry with mint and tamarind] or Spicy Chicken Wings, chilli and coriander. Their menu is a journey around Asia. India [curried chicken with yellow rice], Vietnam [soups, pork noodle or fish and dill], Malaysia [Mee Mamak, spicy tofu and vegetable noodles], Japan [vegetarian Ramen], Singapore [Laksa], Bali [Babi Kecap] and Java [Ketupat Sayur, chicken and chicken curry with rice cake, tofu and egg].

The Bakmie returns. Originally on this site, and always busy, they now have a stand inside. Their homemade chicken noodles are famous in Ubud. They can be served with many different accompaniments; chicken, bakso, fried dumplings and crispy crackers, or all together if you wish! They also offer a Nasi Goreng tossed in the wok with pieces of lamb, shrimp or beef rendang. The local cuisines are not forgotten, all at Rp.50,000 or considerably less; Sate Ayam, Soto Ayam, Rendang Sapi, Ayam Goreng and an excellent Ayam Rica-Rica from Manado, slightly, spicy. The food court is open for breakfast too, even an Eggs Benedict. Salads, Pasta, Burgers. Hot Dogs and Ribs, are all available. Some people just come for the day, endlessly snacking! What is food without a drink, a big range of juices, cocktails, spirits and wine can be ordered at the bar, at the front left. A brilliant concept, to bring together a range of good quality Asian and European cuisines at affordable prices in a pleasant relaxed setting, One of the rare eateries in Ubud with adequate parking in front, except for those big cremation days.

Do Pineapples Grow on Trees? ‘Selamat Pagi, I live in a townhouse that has a small paved area with sunny balconies and was looking for some ideas on growing some salad type plants in planter containers. Looking for easy to grow or the lower maintenance types. What would you suggest for a beginner green thumb like me? Many thanks from Pat at Canggu’ It’s easy to grow a few different varieties of salad greens in a few planter boxes or even on a sunny windowsill in an apartment. It’s all about making the most of your space. Greens can easily be grown in a few containers and picked as needed to supplement your cooking. I think everyone should at least try to grow a few edible plants, it’s good for your health and then don’t even get me started on commercial farming methods and pesticides. On another note, I was reading with interest these past few days Sainsbury’s (UK based supermarket) has started offering touch free meat for sale. According to their research, there is a large group of concerned consumers out there (the under 35s) that are very concerned that they may suffer food poisoning or contract salmonella from handling raw chicken - and now I think to myself ‘thank god I’m turning 40 this year’. Sainsbury’s will launch raw chicken pieces in special ‘no touch’ packages that will accommodate the fickle people in avoiding contact with meat before cooking….Geez they’d get a shock if they went out the back of some of these warungs to see how their food was prepared. God forbid they may even see a live chicken slaughtered - I hope the irony is not lost on them! The average person, probably the younger generation more so has become so far removed from the origins of their food that most probably think that pineapple grows on trees - when in fact we all know that they propagate in the refrigerator down at the supermarket aisle…? Well I’ve always got to have at least one rant per article - now back to the plants and how to grow them. When people are starting out I always advise to just grow what is easiest yet flavourful. It’s all about getting the most for the least effort. I’ll give you my personal favourites which are easily grown in pots or garden beds, that will also do well in both full sun to partial shade. Easy to Grow Salad Vegetables Kale - Growing kale from seed is easy. The plant is hardy and will withstand dry conditions. Kale is a member of the Brassicas, in fact I consider Kale as the easy grow leafy form of broccoli. It doesn’t require constant watering. The leaves are super healthy and packed with flavour. Can be eaten raw or steamed,
added to soups etc. Also great for raw juicing into a green smoothie. Outer leaves can be clipped off as needed and the plant will survive a few seasons if grown this way. Chop off the top off the plant to produce multiple crowns and get more bang for your buck. There are many varieties to grow with subtle variance in flavours such as Tuscan, Russian Red, Curly Kale etc. Just keep your eye out for caterpillars which absolutely love it and can devour a plant in just a few days, which is also a reason why commercial crops are heavily sprayed. Caterpillars lay their eggs on the undersides of leaves, the best way to deter them is to regularly clip the plant and occasionally check the for eggs which can be brushed off with your hands (millennials may prefer to use a Hazchem suit) or otherwise with a hose of water. Also look out for bright green balls of caterpillar poo on the leaves, a tell-tale sign of the critters existence. Swiss chard or silver-beet is another salad plant packed with nutrients that will grow easily with similar requirements to kale. Alliums - Spring onions, shallots, scallions or whatever you like to call them are the gift that just keeps on giving. Easy to grow from seed or offcuts. If you’ve bought a bunch from the store or market after cutting off the root ends for food prep, simply plant them in the ground. Keep watered and a new plant will quickly shoot, best sown in clumps of 10 or more. Once they’re growing, instead of harvesting by pulling from the ground simply cut off shoots at ground level leaving the root base from which new grow will shoot. This method will give a constant supply for years to come. They also produce a lovely mauve/blue/ white flower that can be added to salads or eaten raw straight off the plant - a word of warning though the flower is oniony spicy hot. This plant will withstand dry conditions, though will obviously do better if watered once or twice a week. Add to soups salads, sandwiches or as a garnish. Also great for your health, high in chlorophyll and Vitamin K – one of the lesser known essential elements critical too good health. Parsley and Celery - Both are from the same botanical family which also includes carrots and parsnips. Parsley, sometimes known as rock celery gives a hint that it is the hardier of the two. Although typically people consider the fibrous stalks of celery the main edible, I grow celery more so for the leaves which are
aromatic and flavourful when added to soups, stews, salads or even juiced. Same goes for parsley. Parsley can generally survive in the ground off natural moisture and humidity alone, if potted though it will do well watered once a week. Celery on the other hand will do well watered twice weekly. As with most salad plants, just clip the outer stems as needed for a perpetual supply. Eventually parsley and celery will flower (attracting bees), and then run to seed at which point simply shake the seed heads out around the garden or into containers and within a month the next crop will be emerging. Parsley is so determined you will see it springing up in rock crevices and cracks in the pavement. The best thing about these plants is that pests avoid them, and parsley planted out in the garden is even thought to have a deterrent effect on some insects. Dandelions - Another favourite because they are just an effortless plant to grow and high in essential nutrients. Many people consider them a weed, but I think that is exactly the type of plant you may want to grow – one that will grow on its own. If you can’t get any seeds, next time you see a fluffy dandelion orb (the seed head) pick it and spread the cottony seeds around the garden - they will spring up in no time. Leaves can be added raw to salads, otherwise steamed like spinach, the flowers are edible also and will attract bees to the garden. Roots can also be harvested, dry roasted and ground into a healthy coffee alternative good for improving liver function, otherwise just boil the leaves and drink as a tea. Get reconnected to the food supply and see how easy it is to have a supplemental supply of fresh produce growing in containers or the garden. Oh, and by the way pineapple is a fruit which grows from a bromeliad (Ananas comosus) - interesting to note the Indonesian word for pineapple ‘nanas’ is derived from ‘Ananas’ which is the name it goes by in many European languages.

Nom de plume Occasional Articles From Our Readers
Art Fairs: Independent Artists’ Best Income Bet? By Renée Melchert Thorpe There are compelling reasons for Bali-based artists to consider making a foray into international art fairs. Local galleries can provide exposure through location and contact lists, but if finding collectors and making sales is a top priority, regional art fairs could possibly be a career fast pass. Four and a half hours due north of Bali lies the world’s second largest art market, China, with Hong Kong as its primary hub for art collectors, auction houses, dealers, and a L’s Daily Routine (detail), Lee Yuchi, South Korea, government- backed Gallery iLHO, Seoul Arts Month which includes fairs like Art Basel, local open studios, and myriad arts immersions for the public. Fine art is now in a seller’s market. This March, 12,000 art collectors came to the Asia Contemporary Art Fair in the Conrad Hong Kong, to see and purchase works from hundreds of international artists. In a unique format that is a great antidote to many art fair’s blinding white cubicle format, each luxurious guestroom on 4 high floors of the hotel was devoted to a participating artist or dealer. Promoted by organizers as a system to enjoy art in practical interior spaces similar to one’s home, the effect was sociable and relaxed. Artists from as far away as Peru and the UK shone brightly aside regional artists, the majority being South Korea, Taiwan, China and Japan. Paintings were the most common medium, but sculptures in an amazing array of materials were on sale, and prints were offered widely. Artists who invested in a room by themselves, or those who came with their Poker Ace, pencil on wood, Miranti Minggar Trilliani (Indonesia), courtesy V’Art Space, Kuala Lumpur, dealers, seemed happy enquiries: asiacontemporaryart.com and relaxed, answering visitors’ questions, proffering brochures (part of Asia Contemporary’s customized marketing package), and genuinely enjoying meeting their public. This reporter was struck by the quantity of repeat sellers, with one gallery declaring it was their ninth appearance at the fair. Every artist answered that the fair has been profitable for them. Asia Contemporary’s touch of cachet comes across in sponsored champagne Friday previews for VIPs (exhibitors
may invite several). and on-the-spot sales commenced right away. Trade continued over the two weekend days, with general public eagerly paying about USD25 for single entry tickets. Deals continued to be struck in the days after the fair ended. Indonesian artists, while garnering rave reviews at the blue chip Art Basel HK and nearby Art Central, were nearly absent this year at the Asia Contemporary. It took a bit of searching to discover, in the hotel room occupied by V’Art Space (Kuala Lumpur), several extraordinary pieces by Jogjakarta’s Miranti Minggar, alongside a selection of the gallery’s chosen emerging Asian talents. Perhaps the curatorial vetting process at Asia Contemporary will give a slight advantage to Indonesian art due to the escalating profile of Indonesian fine art in recent months. Whether applicant to Asia Contemporary is by an artist or a gallery, it’s a base rate of eight thousand US dollars to get the 5-star room for five nights, and included in the deal is the chance to have 50 images of artworks placed on Asia Contemporary’s website for 6 months. For anyone browsing Asia art or the artist’s name, it’s a top hit, and a very easyto-use site. Thousands of people all over the world are subscribers, and they believably tout themselves as Asia’s leading art website. Asia Contemporary offers reasonably priced add-ons like getting ads in the festival brochures and fair layout map. The festival’s marketing is first rate, a standout part of the art trade messages of Hong Kong’s Arts Month dominating the Hong Kong streets and media. This is big business. Art Basel, through its partner United Overseas Bank (UBS), freely releases a global art market report each year, downloadable from artbasel.com/theartmarket. It’s full of essential information about the business for artists, dealers, and collectors, broken down into at-a-glance graphs, pie and bar charts. It clearly shows that art fairs are now making up 46% of an average dealer’s sales. It may be a nice ego-boosting foothold to have a posh art gallery on a chic street somewhere, with a gallery girl welcoming visitors, but in terms of profit, the art fair is taking hold as the way of the future, and collectors appreciate the one-stop shopping of a fair. Marketing and Promotion can be an artist’s least favorite tasks and are best left to the pro’s. Unless contracted with an established dealer in a good city, with a large contacts list of collectors, an artist can lose his/ her purpose and ambition, and end up as a Sunday painter with a day job. There are many ways to break into art fairs. The Affordable Art Fairs of Singapore and Hong Kong (both part of Affordable’s worldwide network of fairs organized out of London) have been growing in popularity, and prices are mandated to be in keeping with the proven range of sales to a public less than fabulously wealthy. Hong
Kong’s
long-established
trading
and
financial
industries have created the perfect setting for secure transshipment of art, for the swift movement of cash, and boasts a moneyed public with increasing taste and sophistication. Residing in the small enclave (roughly the size of Tabanan Regency), are 11,000 people with a net worth of at least 10 million USD each, on top of a huge upper middle class. Singapore has a similarly compact population of the wealthy and a rising middle class. Visual arts have possibly had longer public importance and exposure than in Hong Kong, and English is more widely spoken. Art fairs in Jakarta have the advantage of riding a recent wave of interest and expansion in the city’s visual art scene, and in being right here in Indonesia (no customs and immigration, land shipments easily done). Australian painter Joanna Blair, threetime exhibitor at Asia Contemporary Art Fair told the Bali Advertiser this: The atmosphere is unbeatable and I get a lot of curatorial Lift Off!, oil on canvas, Joanna Blair (Australia), photo courtesy of asiacontemporaryart.com support from the Fair staff. The organizers are highly professional, which I very much appreciate. This is my favorite way to exhibit. Being in a hotel room I can completely control the ambience of my room, the music, even the temperature is important! Everything together impacts the viewers experience of your work. I also like to have a flow, whereby my work is easily viewed and not packing in as many paintings as I can. Once someone is in your room, they are not distracted by whatever else is going on in the show, they are able to give their full attention to your pieces, and it is easy to engage them in conversation. I sold four paintings for this show and came away with a number of leads that may result in future sales. Many people were interested in art, asking lots of questions and prepared to buy. It’s too late to apply for inclusion in 2018’s Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong, and Art Stage Singapore, but there’s 2019 to plan for. ** Asia Contemporary Art (Hong Kong) Sept. 29-Oct. 1 http://www.asiacontemporaryart.com/apply/main/2018_ Art_Shows/FALL_CONRAD/en/ Affordable Art Fair Singapore November 16-18 Hong Kong May 18-20 https://affordableartfair.com/exhibit-with-us Art Jakarta August 2-5, 2018 https://www.artjakarta.com/app_form_download Art Stage Jakarta August 7-9 https://www.artstage.com/jakarta/site/contact

Not food, but still in the kitchen, and for those who are irked by the low quality of what passes for Glad Wrap in Indonesia, try Bagus Cling Wrap. LLLLL I’m the King of the Commonwealth...! I couldn’t help but be amused by The Guardian’s recent report on the meeting in London for Commonwealth leaders and their novel suggestion as to who should succeed the Queen of England, as and when she quits or dies. Prince Charles and British PM Theresa May were in no doubt that it had to King Charles loll. After all, even if it hadn’t actually been called the British Commonwealth since 1949, his mum has been in the job for nigh on 66 years and, even so, it was still sort of well - British wasn’t it? And - dash it all - he always wanted the job. Labor leader Jeremy Corbin, no monarchist he, was quick to suggest that perhaps it was time to rotate the position among the leaders from one of the other 93 member nations.

After all, unless you really break the rules, like Idi Amin or Mugabe say, you can usually get away with most things. If you are expelled, you can always get back in by letting a few of your opponents out of jail once they no longer present a threat.
While Corbyn’s suggestion to rotate among member nations appears an obvious option, it does have drawbacks. Australians may recall how ex-Liberal PM John Howard, a far more astute monarchist than the bizarre Tony Abbott, was able to game the referendum his way by insisting that Australia’s President or head of state should not be electAnyway, now the subject has been raised, with the Prince ed by popular vote but chosen by parliament. many people go into the fetal position with some almost becoming unconscious. It is an extremely healing experience and allows divers to focus on their breathing pattern.” Environmental Sustainability
Bali is world-renowned for retreats that take a holistic approach to healing that looks at the entire person—body, mind and spirituality—rather than just a sum of parts and symptoms to be investigated individually. And some might be surprised to find that now this multi- disciplinary philosophy is also being applied to diving. Pioneered in Bali by Mahendra Shah, Zen Harmony Diving is a system that combines scuba diving and snorkeling with meditation, yoga, pranayama, or controlled breathing, and Ayurveda. “We are all made 70 percent of water and spend nine months floating in amniotic fluid in the womb. What better way to place yourself in a meditative world, and become completely present, than through diving and snorkeling,” Shah says. “Usually people want to go diving straight away. We don’t encourage that, but give them a consultation first to see what their mental and physical condition is like, and how they breathe.”
environment. Mediation makes it easier for people to relax during a dive, yoga prepares the body for the dive to ensure that people don’t get cramps, pull muscles or injure themselves, while premayana helps people breathe slower and deeper,” Arnaud says. “After the dive, we work with each person to remove any excess nitrogen from their system, and to calm the mind and the body.” To facilitate a meditative diving experience, Zen Harmony Diving utilizes full face dive and snorkeling mask systems, which allow users to breathe naturally through the nose while under water. Traditional diving equipment requires the use of an air tank that is connected to a breathing mouth regulator, which is not a natural way of breathing. “The problem with traditional diving and snorkeling equipment is that you need to breathe through a tube with your mouth. This does not allow natural deep breathing,” says Shah. “To solve this problem, an Italian company came up with a new mask model around three years ago, that we now use. It is an all-in mask that covers your whole face and comes with a tube so you can comfortably breathe either through the mouth or the nose.”
Shah says that Zen Dives promotes awareness not just of ourselves, but also the issues affecting our oceans and marine life. Divers are encouraged to pick up rubbish if they encounter any during their dive and participate in beach clean ups organized by Zen Dives on the 28th of each month. Diving Programs Zen Dives offers two programs, one for beginners and one for those who are already certified. The packages run from three to ten days, and are flexible in terms of what is offered and the dive sites. Zen Dives also offers a full range of PADI courses.
Some Zen Harmony Diving Locations
In the Zen Harmony Diving philosophy, the ocean can be used as a pathway to physical, mental, emotional and spiritual therapy. The practice enables divers to explore Bali’s fascinating marine flora and fauna while enjoying meditative clarity through controlled breathing and free flow physical exercise in an underwater environment, which is around 800 times denser than air. The Zen Harmony Diving experience begins with a consultation, during which divers meet with a diving expert, as well as Ayurveda and yoga professionals, who assess their physical and mental well-being. According to a Zen Harmony Diving instructor, Arnaud Gonzalez, thorough preparation before a dive can make a world of difference. “We help divers learn key b r e a t h i n g techniques, as well as meditation, yoga, and Ayurvedic exercises to make them feel more comfortable in the underwater
Zen Reef Puri Jati – A micro diving site a five-minute drive from the Zen Dives Resort in north Bali. The marine life in the area includes seahorses, stargazers and mimic octopus.
As a part of the pre-diving process, Shah offers Zentsu, an adaptation of Watsu—shiatsu that takes place in water—to diving and snorkeling. The 30-minute treatment, which usually takes place in the pool, involves floating on the surface of the water—both face up and face down in a fullface mask—with the help of a therapist to relax the body and mind. Shah says that Zentsu can be particularly helpful for anxious divers. “Zentsu is meant to bring our mind back to our experience in the womb. After saying a mantra in Sanskrit, the therapist starts rocking you at the frequency of the womb. Within five minutes,
Menjangan Island – An island in north-west Bali famous for its rich marine life and healthy coral. The numerous diving spots on the island boast caverns, dramatic walls, steep drop-offs and even a 19th-century wreck. Pemuteran – The location of the largest coral reef restoration project in the world. Lots of healthy soft and hard coral, fascinating biorock coral nursery structures and a small underwater temple. Tulamben – Home of the U.S.A.T Liberty shipwreck, which was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during World War II. Today, the shipwreck abounds with a huge variety of marine life.

DOWN SYNDROME….It’s Just an Extra Gene Right? What is Down syndrome? Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes intellectual disability and other physical and learning challenges. The disorder is also known as ‘trisomy 21’ as it is caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. Unfortunately the local name for this is “anak idiot”. Inside the cells of our bodies are tiny structures called ‘chromosomes’. Chromosomes carry the genes that determine how we develop. Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes in each of their cells. In people with Down syndrome, these pairs don’t divide correctly and this causes the baby’s cells to have an extra copy of chromosome number 21. The extra chromosome can’t be removed from cells, so there’s no cure for the condition. The chromosomes divide incorrectly by accident, not because of anything the parents have done. Although the risk of having a child with Down syndrome increases with the age of the mother - a 20-yearold woman has approximately a 1 in 1,100 chance of having a Down syndrome child, whereas at 40 the risk increases to 1 in 68. Anyone can have a baby with Down syndrome. On average it affects about one in every 700-900 babies. People with Down syndrome will have learning difficulties and some have more serious difficulties than others. It’s hard to tell how much a baby with Down syndrome will be affected as a child or an adult. Conditions linked with Down syndrome include heart problems and reduced hearing and vision. Many of these problems can be treated, and frequent health checks can ensure that any problems are detected as early as possible. Until recently there has been no local support group to assist families who have Down syndrome children, however POTADS (Persatuan Orang Tua Anak Downs Syndrom) is changing all this. On Saturday April 14th I was honored to be invited to an annual gathering of families and friends of Down syndrome children, and this is what I learned…..
POTADS BACKGROUND Some children are born “normal” and some children are born “special”. One of them is a child with Down syndrome. Getting a child with Down syndrome is something very, very unexpected. In general, parents will experience sadness, stress, guilt, hurt, denial and so forth. POTADS has created a community of families & children with Down syndrome. They exchange ideas and support each other. POTADS strives to help restore the confidence of the child’s parents with Down syndrome so that they can educate the child to be self-sufficient in accordance with their shortcomings and advantages. In addition POTADS also informs the public that Down syndrome is not a disease or a dreaded curse. With the affection and guidance of parents of people with Down syndrome, these children can be educated, and become an integral part of the community. The main goal of POTADS is to empower parents of children with Down syndrome to always be eager to help their children to achieve maximum growth, so that they can become self-reliant, achievers that can be accepted by the public; because children with Down syndrome have the same rights as other children. MISSION • POTADS has a 24-hour accessible information center either by mail, telephone, internet or other communications media. • Provides up-to-date information about Down syndrome development both scientifically and from the experiences of others. • Disseminate information about Down syndrome to needy members and places to be accessed by parents with children with Down syndrome, such as Hospitals, Clinics, Puskesmas to Posyandu. • Provide group and individual consultation as needed. • Organizing activities that support the dissemination of information about Down syndrome to the wider community. • Organizing activities that will encourage people to be more concerned and respectful; so they can give equal opportunities to develop in various fields (education, arts & culture, etc.).
MOTTO The motto of POTADS Foundation is “I AM CAN”, meaning that people with Down syndrome, with all their advantages and disadvantages, still CAN and are still ABLE do be just like other human beings. POTADS PROGRAM • Establish POTADS Information and Activity Center (PIK) throughout Indonesia. Currently PIK POTADS already exist in Medan, Bandung, Jogjakarta, Surabaya and Bali. • Organize meetings with parents of Down syndrome children in collaboration with experts related to child development with Down syndrome (doctors, psychologists, therapists, and others). • Empower the parents of children with Down syndrome through community support. Connecting with Your Helping Spirits For many people, life has become a daily grind of getting up early to get their kids ready for school, take the dog out for a quick walk so he can do his business and then head off to a 9am – 5pm job which more often than not, ends up being till 7pm. There is no time or space to connect with oneself, let alone one’s Helping Spirits. This idea of having no time is so pervasive in Western cultures around the world. We have been programmed by our societies to believe that we can’t expect more from life – we have a responsibility to pay our bills, take care of our families and perhaps even our extended families. We have been conditioned to believe that the best way to do this is by staying within the conventions of our societies, because when we deviate from this, it’s just too risky and we are likely to fail and lose everything we’ve worked so hard to achieve – a new BMW, the latest iPhone, a projector TV for our home theatre, etc. We have all been sold a lie. Society has so cleverly seduced us with the promise of material abundance as long as we keep working and working and working and working. A relentless cycle that keeps us on a hamster wheel and totally distracts us from the possibility of true joy and contentment. We know something is missing, but we can’t quite get to the root of what this is. If we only had more time to spend on our own in nature, we would begin to understand and open up to the unseen world which is not a physical place, but a place that we can explore the depths of our souls and connect with our helping spirits. People often ask me how they can easily connect with their Helping Spirits, also known as ‘Spirit guides’. They think that it’s too difficult or even impossible for them to do, but it’s not. The key is finding just a little time for yourself alone, preferably in nature, where you can quiet your mind and drop into your heart. The heart is the higher mind and is how we can access our higher self. Once we’ve made this connection, it is quite easy to connect with our Helping Spirits. So some might ask, “what’s the point of connecting with my Helping Spirits? How is this relevant to my life and what I want to achieve?” If we look back at our history, there were many ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Ancient Greece & Italy, lost civilizations such as Atlantis and Lemuria that all had one thing in common – they all understood that through accessing higher states of

consciousness they could receive direct teachings from the ascended masters and other transcendent beings that wish to be of service to humanity. Through special meditation techniques or the use of mind altering substances, ordinary men and women would often access these higher states of consciousness to receive wisdom about important issues such as how to govern their societies to how to make natural medicines from the native plants that grew in their villages. Life was much easier for them as a result, because there was a deep knowing that assisted them with making better life choices. With the chaos in the world it is now more important than ever before for all of us to frequently take the time to connect with
The therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel
our higher selves and our helping spirits. Here are some simple techniques that can help you do this as follows: C/NV/I-30 August 17
1. Find a quiet place on the beach or somewhere in nature where you won’t be disturbed. Place your hand on your heart and set the intention to connect with your heart energy. With closed eyes imagine this energy rising up to the space between your brows (also known as your 3rd eye). You many notice some sensations like a change in temperature or tingling. This is just energy. Continue to raise your perception higher to your crown chakra and ask to connect with your Helping Spirits. Sometimes you will see an image of your Spirit Guide or for those who aren’t visual, you might just sense their presence or have strong feelings of love and/or peace wash over you. This is a good sign that you’ve made a connection. Once you feel this, then you may wish to ask a question or ask for healing if you need it. When you feel you’re finished. Thank your Helping Spirits and say goodbye. It may take some practice, but if you continue to do this regularly, you will open up more and more to making a connection with your Helping Spirits. 2. Lie down in bed and close your eyes. Imagine that you are floating up and out of your body out into the the sky, beyond the stars and into the Upper World where some of your Helping Spirits reside. Once you’re there have a look around and ask to meet with one of your Helping Spirits. You will see or feel your H.S. come forward. Sometimes the connection will be very strong even on the first meeting, but it can also be quite faint if you are new to this type of practice. Either way is fine. You may wish to ask your Helping Spirit what is the purpose of you being in my life? Or, do you have any wisdom that you would like to share with me? If you have a very specific question this is even better, because the clearer you are with your intention the easier it will be to make a connection with your Helping Spirits. Again when you feel you’re finished, thank your Helping Spirits and say goodbye. There are many ways we can connect with our Spirit guides but the two methods above are a good way to start making a connection with them. If you would like to learn more about this, there are many Energy Medicine practitioners and teachers on Bali who offer a variety of healing modalities and practices to assist people with connecting to the higher self, Helping Spirits and more. I encourage you to explore the possibilities, for me, having this connection has been truly life changing.

Making Spectacles of Ourselves! In August of last year, the Rotary Club of Bali Lovina provided Bali Advertiser readers with an outline of our eyeglasses project. Now, eight months later, it is time to bring our readers up to date with the project. As mentioned previously, one of our major ongoing community projects is the provision of free eyeglasses to high school students in Buleleng. As the only Rotary Club in Buleleng (the largest regency by area in Bali) we certainly have our work cut out for us! To fund this project we depend entirely on donations from other sources – over the years these have included overseas Rotary Clubs, charitable organizations and private individuals. At this point we should mention the great generosity of Clifford Grant from White Rock, Canada – he organized donations from his Rotary Club and friends amounting to around $2000 for this project. From these donations, our Club pays for the lenses. Our incredible partners in the project, Bali Top Optical, provide free testing, frames, fitting and after-sales service. We have been greatly assisted in our selection of needy
schools by a local yayasan, Peduli Sesama Philanthropic Work – their front-liners in villages scattered across Buleleng have been invaluable in introducing us to schools, and providing much practical assistance. So far, through this project, we have distributed around 615 pairs of glasses. This means that we have actually personally tested a total of about 6,000 students. Pretty darn good for a club as small as ours! Our members, armed with eye charts, pointers and enthusiasm, carry out most of the initial testing. The experts from Bali Top Optical then test our “short list” with their computerized equipment, coming up with the prescription required for each individual student. Although we mainly focus (pun intended) on SMP students, we have also found ourselves over the last few months at a variety of other locations. In fact, since our last report to the Bali Advertiser in August, we have completed testing and provided eyeglasses to students at the following: August 2017 Rumah Bapaku Orphanage, Anturan September/October 2017 SMP3 Tejakula, Sembiran Narayan Seva Children’s Home, Singaraja
We could not possibly have achieved this without the support of Bali Top Optical, and the dedicated assistance of the staff of their Singaraja office: Ayu Yuningsih, Kadek Suartika, Kadek Sugiharta and Eka Fridayanthi. They have been truly wonderful! The accompanying photos show just a fraction of the work carried out over the last few months. We still have sufficient funds to keep the project running for another couple of months, but we are always hoping for further financial assistance to materialize! If you, or someone or some organization you know, would like to contribute, our contact details are on our website www.jepunsegara.com/rotaryclubbalilovina Have a look at the News Archives pages of our website for further details of the great work of the Rotary Club of Bali Lovina. We’re possibly the smallest club in Bali (but growing) and somehow manage to cover as much as possible of the largest Regency. On the website you will also find details of our meetings – please come along and join us next time you’re in Lovina! Or contact us: President Conchita on 081 139 908 66, or Secretary David on 0813 3865 2107. Desak asked me what I wanted for lunch. Out of a jet-lagged fog the words ‘Salad Nicoise’ jumped from my lips. We were, however, out of several ingredients. “Can I substitute zucchini for the green beans?” she asked. “And we don’t have any tuna.” After a thorough search of the pantry I found a can of crab. And Sherry Vinegar was an improvement over the red wine vinegar in our recipe.
The Not Traditional Crab Salad Nicoise Dressing Ingredients:
Serves 2-3
- 1 1/2 Tbl. extra virgin olive oil - 1 Tbl. sherry wine vinegar - 1/2 tsp. Dijon mustard - 1 Tbl. parmesan cheese, grated - salt and pepper to taste
C/E/I-14 March 18
Salad Ingredients: - 200 gr. small potatoes, scrubbed with skins left on - 1 medium sized zucchini cut into stubby rectangles, steamed until just tender, and then cooled - 1/2 red or yellow bell pepper, roasted, skin and seeds removed, sliced - 125 gm. tomatoes cut into wedges - 3 shallots, thinly sliced, rinsed and drained – skip this step if you prefer a stronger shallot flavor - 2 pieces canned or bottled anchovies drained and chopped - 1 1/2 Tbl. capers, drained - 4 kalamata olives pitted and cut into slivers - 3 fresh basil leaves leaves torn by hand - 1/4 cup chopped parsley - 1/2 can (170 gr) crab, drained and flaked (or use flaked fresh crab) - 6 rucola leaves, washed and dried, and torn in big pieces - 1 hard-boiled egg, cut into 4 wedges Directions: For the Dressing Mix all the dressing ingredients until well mixed and set aside. For the Salad Boil the potatoes until just tender. Cool them enough to remove the skins. Cut the potatoes into quarters and put into a ålarge bowl. Pour the dressing over the potatoes while they are still warm and gently mix. Let these sit at room temperature while you prepare the rest of the salad. When you are ready to eat add the steamed zucchini, bell pepper, tomatoes, shallots, anchovies, capers, olives, basil, parsley, and crab. Put the rucola on a serving plate, top with the salad, arrange the egg wedges on top, and add a few grindings of fresh black pepper. Serve.

33 Pet Sterilisation & Vaccination Days For Low Income Locals In Bali At Sunset Vet we often get kind locals and expatriates enquiring about how they can arrange the mass sterilisation of street dogs in a certain area, particularly on beaches. This is because beaches are a common place for people to dump unwanted dogs (particularly female puppies), and also because dogs can congregate there to feed off the leftovers from warungs, beach bars and ceremonies.
Unfortunately it is very difficult for us to arrange a coordinated mass sterilisation day for stray dogs on a beach that are not used to being handled. Beach dogs will scarper at the first sight of something suspicious such as an ambulance or dog-catcher carrying a net! It is also very difficult to lure the dogs into an enclosed area in advance of the vets arriving, even for those kind angels who feed the dogs on a daily basis and so have some familiarity with them. As a result the sterilisation of beach or other stray dogs can only be accomplished on an ad-hoc basis, where individuals are blow darted and brought to a vet clinic for treatment, and returned to their patch once sterilised, vaccinated and treated for whatever ailments they have. Stray dogs that have been sterilised by Sunset Vet are given an ear tattoo with the letters SV on the inside of the ear. Unfortunately collars (to show that a dog has been vaccinated for rabies) do not stay on for long with beach dogs, who make light work of removing them from their buddies during rough and tumble play. One fact that most of the general public are unaware of is that sterilising male dogs makes little or no difference to population control in street dogs. This is because dogs have relatively large territories and there is ALWAYS another unsterilized male dog ready to step in and impregnate a bitch in heat. Therefore to stop females getting pregnant you would need to sterilise ALL the males in a certain area, leaving just one intact would make all the other male sterilisations pointless. Since it is not feasible to sterilise every single male dog, we tend to focus purely on sterilising the females for population control. This does not mean that sterilising males is pointless, as there are other benefits such as the prevention of transmission of venereal sarcoma tumours and a reduction in wandering and fighting that limits the spread of rabies, but for population control you might as well forget the males and focus purely on the females. Regardless of these difficulties, a massive impact on animal welfare can be made via the encouragement and facilitation of vaccination and sterilisation of pets belonging to low income local families here in Bali. Allowing dogs and cats to give birth every year produces countless unwanted puppies and kittens, many of which will die slow and painful deaths after being dumped or succumbing to the viruses (primarily parvo and distemper) that are so prevalent in Bali. Private veterinary care is simply unaffordable for many poor families in Bali, so
there are a number of wonderful organisations working in this specific space to help them out, such as non-profits Bali Pet Crusaders and Pro Steril Indonesia. Jet Set Petz is a program set up by American Expatriate Rhonda Lepsch and her Balinese husband Nyoman after they had 106 dogs and 23 cats dumped in their back parking lot in Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua. This experience led to them putting together a small program to help low income families in the area help their animals and to also help clean up the stray dog population.

What started off as a small program funded by Rhonda and Nyoman’s water sports company (www.jetsetmarine.com) that saw 8-10 animals a month has blossomed into almost 80 animals coming each month. Almost 50% of the animals now that come in are rescued by local people as they know there is an option if they take a dog off the street they’re not looking at 50% of the family’s monthly income going towards vet costs. Rhonda’s sterilisation and vaccination program has not only cleaned up the local stray dog population, but has also ensured that there has not been a reported case of rabies in Tanjung Benoa for almost 4 years since the program started. Over the past 2 years Sunset Vet has donated vets pro bono to carry out the free sterilisations and vaccinations, and people donate drapes, gloves, sutures, other medicines, Nexgard, shampoos, collars, etc all of which are used on the day. This helps to keep the costs down, but the drugs, suture material and multi-vaccines also need to be covered somehow and thus Jet Set Petz is on the lookout for monthly sponsors – a perfect opportunity for a business or individual who wants to do their bit to help animal welfare in Bali. A donation of USD $1000 is enough to cover a monthly sterilisation day that treats on average 80 animals, the donating business or individual is then acknowledged via printed banners on the day and via extensive social media coverage. Jet Set Petz is still desperately looking for sponsors for July, August and September, please email them for further details to rhonda.lepsch@balijetsetpetz.com.

Local News Bali drug smuggler Isaac Roberts Sentenced to 15 months’ rehabilitation A former Brisbane accountant has been sentenced to 15 months’ rehabilitation in Bali for drug smuggling. Isaac Emmanuel Roberts pleaded guilty to the illegal use of narcotics for personal consumption and possession of psychotropic drugs after his arrest at Bali’s Ngurah Rail airport on December 4. The 35-year-old accountant and former political candidate was found with 14.3 grams of crystal methamphetamine and 14 ecstasy tablets in his luggage. Isaac Roberts, 35, has been sentenced to 15 months’ rehabilitation in Bali for drug smuggling. In sentencing today, a judge said Roberts had contradicted the Indonesian government’s program to eradicate narcotics and illegal drugs. However he said he the 35-year-old is a drug addict who suffers depression and requires medical and social rehabilitation. Surrounded by cameras outside court, Roberts told reporters he was thankful for being given the chance to undergo rehabilitation. “I need rehabilitation. I am very sick,” he said, with his head down. According to the judge, the mitigating factors in Roberts’ case were his honest admittance during the trial and his promise to not repeat his acts. During previous court appearances, he had told the court he had used one to two grams of crystal methamphetamine, three times a day. When questioned by the judge as to why he continued to use drugs, he said it was to “reduce his headache pain…and forget his problems”. The 35-year-old was the Liberal Democratic Party’s candidate for the federal seat of Higgins in Melbourne in 2009 after former Liberal treasurer Peter Costello resigned from parliament. He also won the National Advanced Tax Dux Award in 2012 but was reprimanded and fined $3100 by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand in 2015 after failing to reply to correspondence. Roberts said he will not be appealing his sentence. (9NEWS April 16, 2018) Bali police hunt bus driver after fatal collision at GWK A chain collision involving nine vehicles that left one person dead in front of Jimbaran’s Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) cultural park on Friday (13/4) is under investigation by police in Bali. Denpasar Traffic Police are still-hunting for the driver of the bus that caused the collision, who apparently fled the scene after the accident. The bus company Jasa Raharja Bali, has compensated the family of victim Ida Bagus Putu Adnyana, 46, from Singaraja, North Bali with IDR50 million (US$3,630). Another man, Jalil, was injured in the accident and was taken to the hospital where he is receiving medical treatment. The accident took place around 2pm on Friday when the bus, reportedly carrying Indian tourists, was driving downhill from south to north on the steep Jl. Uluwatu and allegedly experienced brake failure, causing a domino effect crash. The bus plowed into a Toyota Avanza, which crashed into a Toyota Innova, which crashed into another Avanza and then a motorcycle in front, which was driven by Jalil. On its way down the narrow road, the bus additionally slammed into two pickups parked on the side of the road. After hitting the cars, the bus swerved to the right to hit an oncoming Isuzu car, steered left again to hit a motorbike driven by Putu Budi Artana, and finally launched into a power pole where it finally stopped. “We are still looking for the bus driver. We urge the bus driver to turn himself in,” Denpasar Traffic Police Chief Rahmawaty Ismail told Bali Post on Sunday. Adnyana, who had been the driver of one of the pickups parked in front of the Circle K across from GWK, was killed outright as he stepped out of his vehicle to buy a drink from the convenience shop. He died instantly. Last week’s pile-up wasn’t the first to fatal collision to happen at that spot, which is quite prone to dangerous accidents says local vendor Sudiana. About five years ago, a truck similarly experienced brake failure in the same spot. As a result, the truck slid into the vehicles in front of it and also took out some stalls along the side of the road. “If I’m not mistaken, at that time, about five people were killed by the accident,” Sudiana told Tribun Bali on Saturday. (Coconuts Bali April 16, 2018) Indonesia to lose Facebook? Rumors are rife that Indonesia may take the official step of closing Facebook in Indonesia. As reported in several national media, Indonesia’s Minister of Communications and Information (Kominfo), Rudiantara, has sent two separate official warning letters to Facebook Indonesia in connection with the theft of data by Cambridge Analytica from at least 1 million Facebook Indonesia users under a cooperation agreement with the giant American social media and social networking company.
erating license suspended.
Facebook has since terminated its relationship with Cambridge Analytica. Indonesia has an estimated 80 million people registered as social network users with 3 out of 4 Indonesian Internet users believed to be messaging on Facebook. Moreover, Indonesia is counted as the 3rd largest country worldwide in terms of Facebook users. With the dispatch of a second warning letter from the Ministry to Facebook Indonesia, there is growing concern that Indonesia may be preparing to shut down Facebook nationwide. Legal tradition in Indonesia dictates that three warning letters sent before any business is shut down or its op-
If Indonesia follows through with current threats to shut down Facebook, it would make the Republic the fourth country to block the social networking application - after the People’s Republic of China, Iran and North Korea. With Indonesia’s presidential elections set to take place in 2019, some Indonesian officials view a shutdown of Facebook as a prudent step to prevent the insidious manipulation of the electorate through hoax news and phantom Facebook accounts. Tribunenews.com quotes Rudiantara as saying that he would have little hesitation in closing down Facebook Indonesia if such a step proved necessary. Admitting that certain procedures and rules would have to be applied to affect an official shutdown, Rudiantara added: “If the Government decides to block (Facebook), then it will be blocked.” The first warning letter was sent to Facebook on April 5, 2108, followed a few days later by a second formal warning. Both letters demanded an immediate and urgent explanation and the detailed written results of a formal audit by Facebook on the data breach committed by Cambridge Analytica. Rudiantara complained on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, that the requested audit report has yet to be satisfactorily submitted to his Ministry. The Minister’s and the Government’s concerns regarding Facebook have been heightened further by subsequent reports of data-gathering via “personality quizzes” conducted on Facebook by “CubeYou” and “AgregateIQ.” The Indonesian Ministry has urged Facebook to close all personality quiz applications operating on its system. Moreover, the Indonesian Government is demanding that Facebook comply with a 2016 Indonesian law on the protection of private data stored on electronic systems. With an estimated 87 million Facebook users worldwide affected by the Cambridge Analytica data breach that facilitated Russian interference in elections in the USA and Europe, Indonesia may have had more of its impressionable social network users affected by the breach than any other nation in the world. Equanimity superyacht not connected to 1MDB, must be returned to owner: Jakarta court A luxury yacht owned by Equanimity Cayman Limited, which was seized by Indonesian police near Bali on Feb 28, has no link with 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a South Jakarta district court has ruled. The vessel, named Equanimity, can thus be returned to its owner, said Indonesia Special Economic Crimes Unit director Dr Rudy Heriyanto Adi. In a statement yesterday, Rudy said that police will obey the decision by the court, which ruled that the yacht’s seizure was illegal and not conducted in accordance with the law.“Based on the ruling made by the South Jakarta State Court, which is final, the police will obey the order to return the yacht to its owner, Equanimity Cayman Limited. “Based on the facts of the proceedings, it was found that the rightful owner of the superyacht Equanimity is Equanimity Cayman Limited (and) that there is no link between the superyacht and 1MDB,” he added. The yacht was seized as part of the United States’ Department of Justice’s investigation into 1MDB. It has been alleged that the vessel’s ultimate owner is Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low. [New Straits Times April 18, 2018] Grab sets up passenger pick-up point at Bali airport Chasing out Uber and Grab drivers trying to pick up incoming passengers had been something of a time-honored tradition for conventional taxi drivers at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International, ever since the industry-disrupting apps made their debut in Bali several years ago. But the times sure have changed now that Grab has swallowed up Uber in Southeast Asia and the app announced on Tuesday that it established a pick-up point for riders at the island’s airport. “This is to facilitate the meeting of our drivers with customers using the Grabcar service when they arrive in Bali,” Grab Indonesia Executive Director Rizki Kramadibrata said from the airport on Tuesday. The meeting point, a green and white booth, has been set up in the arrivals section of the domestic terminal, in partnership with the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Management Union (Kophrindo). Officers at the booth will assist passengers with making bookings and will also offer information about booking tour packages provided by Kophrindo. However, passengers can still specify other pick-up points at the airport, not necessarily at the booth. “The presence of this booth is expected to help support the transportation infrastructure at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, while providing more transportation options for tourists,” Weri Sulasmiaty of Kophrindo said, as quoted by Antara. (Coconuts Bali April 11, 2018) Australian Government assisting Bali in conquering mounting trash problem To help Bali address the mounting problem of trash disposal in Bali, the Australian Consulate-General in Bali will host a seminar featuring experts in the field of waste disposal. As reported by Beritabali.com, Dr. Helena Studdert, the Consul-General of Australia for Bali outlined the plan for a coming seminar to Made Mangku Pastika during a visit to the Governor’s office on Friday, April 13, 2018. Dr. Studdert said that the millions of tourists, including Australian tourists, who visit Bali every year, add to the growing amount of trash left on the Island. For this reason, Australia feels a responsibility to help Bali solve the problem of trash management. As a first step, the Australian Government is sponsoring a discussion forum to explore solutions to the problem. The seminar will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 to be attended by leaders and experts in the area of trash control and management. Hotels in Bali that have adopted a zero waste management program will also be invited to attend. Governor Pastika expressed his gratitude to the Consul-General and the plans outlined to hold the waste management seminar in Bali. He acknowledged that trash has become a major problem in Bali together with transportation issues. He said he hoped the Australian Consulate would also invite officials from the Environmental Agency, Public Works Department and the Department for Oceans and Fisheries to attend. “The oceans are also part of our concern because there is a great deal of trash thrown into the sea,” said Pastika. He said the seminar was especially timely given the fact that Bali will serve as the host of the International Monetary Fund - World Bank meeting and plans for issues of the environment to be discussed at the Summit. The Governor and Dr. Studdert also had the opportunity to discuss briefly the ongoing cooperation between Bali’s new Mandara Hospital and Australia. (Discoverynews April 15. 2018)
