Q & A on CrVID-19 What is COVID-19?
How long does the virus survive on surfaces?
COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered corona virus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.
It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment).
What are the symptoms of COVID-19? The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. People with fever, cough and difficulty breathing should seek medical attention. How does COVID-19 spread? People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth or breathe in the droplets from a person with COVID-19 who coughs out or exhales droplets. How long is the incubation period for COVID-19? The “incubation period” means the time between catching the virus and beginning to have symptoms of the disease. Most estimates of the incubation period for COVID-19 range from 1-14 days, most commonly around five days. These estimates will be updated as more data become available.
If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with simple disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose. Can humans become infected COVID-19 from an animal source?
with
the
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in animals. Occasionally, people get infected with these viruses which may then spread to other people. Possible animal sources of COVID-19 have not yet been confirmed.
What can I do to protect myself and prevent the spread of disease? ● Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. ● Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. ● Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. ● Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately. ● Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. ● Keep up to date on the latest COVID-19 hotspots (cities or local areas where COVID-19 is spreading widely). Is there anything I should not do?
To protect yourself, such as when visiting live animal markets, avoid direct contact with animals and surfaces in contact with animals. Ensure good food safety practices at all times. Handle raw meat, milk or animal organs with care to avoid contamination of uncooked foods and avoid consuming raw or undercooked animal products.
The following measures ARE NOT effective against COVID-2019 and can be harmful:
Are there any medicines or therapies that can prevent or cure COVID-19?
In any case, if you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing seek medical care early to reduce the risk of developing a more severe infection and be sure to share your recent travel history with your health care provider.
WHO does not recommend self-medication with any medicines, including antibiotics, as a prevention or cure for COVID-19. However, there are several ongoing clinical trials that include both western and traditional medicines. WHO will continue to provide updated information as soon as clinical findings are available.
● Smoking ● Wearing multiple masks ● Taking antibiotics

The Frugal Balinist and ends up a dirty frog pond, it can still be fixed without draining it. The correct chemical balance is crucial to keep the water clear. All sorts of bacterium and microbes can be eliminated with the use of calcium hypochlorite or sodium hypochlorite. All that is necessary is to buy a quality chlorine package and place it in the distribution container. After chemicals have been added, wait 24 hours while the powder coagulates all of the foreign particles, then most of it sinks to the bottom. Change the filter at least every 4 years. *If the pool overflows, the balancing tank might need to be drained and cleaned. *Maintaining a swimming pool in the tropics with all its accompanying costs and maintenance isn’t easy and requires know-how and patience. *A well maintained pool is a healthy pool. Don’t skimp on the quality of the pump and filtration equipment. Installing an automated chlorination system and a pump timer will save you much time and effort. *Use a test kit regularly. *Whenever the pool is not in use, throw a tarp over it. Never leave a swimming pool empty.
* Cheap Airfares!
*Tile Up! When redoing your bathroom, instead of buying non-slip ceramic tiles from a tile shop, pick up exceedingly attractive stone tiles from a stone yard which sell for about half the price of ceramic tiles. Obviously, they don’t come in pretty patterns and colors, but they’re definitely non-slip and look great. *Rough stone for your shower floor works well and for the rest of the bathroom floor just use a rough textured ceramic. *Whether they stain or not depends on what water you’re using. Tap water from the public water company PDAM contains so much calcium that rough textured tiles collect small whitish stains, so better not choose black-colored tiles.
As panic around Coronavirus spreads, AirAsia airfares drop. These pre-season fares, driven down by the complete ban of flights from China, are the lowest fares ever seen with the airline, but sometimes give you only 72 hours to book. Flights from Perth to Bali can be as low as Aus$89. AirAsia is also offering promo seats to domestic and international destinations such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and Penang in Malaysia. Sign up for flight alerts at airasia.com or via the AirAsia *Most bule and middle-class Indonesians buy their tiles at mobile app. Depo Bangungan (Jl. Teuku Umar Barat 388) and Mitra 10 (Jl. Education & Family
Bali For Kids
You’d have to be living in a remote cave in the Himalayas with no outside contact to not be aware of the world-wide corona virus pandemic and the travel restrictions, self-isolation and quarantines spreading rapidly across the globe. Schools in many regions are closing for a month or more and parents often have to stay or work at home. While many schools are replacing classes with online teaching, this may just cover part of the normal school day. My daughter, for example, is expected to log into her Google Classroom and show attendance through the class What’s App group. However, her teachers will only be holding class from 8 am to 11 am, instead of her normal school day that runs from 8 am to 3 pm. So what is a parent to do in these highly unusual times to keep kids busy, focused, entertained, learning and above all, not bored.
4) Cook with your kids and get them to help you follow a recipe so they can learn about measuring. 5) Do a puzzle with your kids or get them to work on a puzzle by themselves. 6) Set younger kids up with Play Doh and art or craft supplies so they can happily create by themselves. 7) Get your kids to write letters to the people they can’t visit or to their friends. This way, they can practice writing skills. 8) Talk to friends and family often on the Internet so everyone stays connected. 9) Go for long walks with your kids. Be sure to keep your distance from others, but getting outdoors and being in nature is a great way for all ages to cope with being shut up at home. This also ensures that you are both getting regular exercise, sunshine and fresh air, all of which have been shown to help mild cases of COVID19 and to boost the immune system. Malaka Gharib/NPR
so this wasn’t a revelation to her. Again, age appropriate. You know best what your kids can handle and understand. The Coronavirus Parenting Hacks Facebook Group has a good video for kids explaining the virus and every-day precautions that you can both watch together.
Malaka Gharib/NPR
First, I would strongly advise that if you haven’t already talked with your kids about COVID19 and steps that each of us can take to protect others, and ourselves then you need to have that talk right now. Choose ageappropriate language and concepts. Children are highly intuitive and they will have seen adults around them getting stressed, anxious or worried, or talking incessantly about this Corona Virus-thing. They already known there is something serious going on. Stress to kids that they are at very low risk of getting sick but explain to them the need for staying at home, why classes and gatherings are being cancelled, so that the disease doesn’t spread. Explain that it’s just for a while, not forever (although it will seem like forever to them!). Show them how to wash their hands properly and make sure they are washing their hands thoroughly (for 20 seconds) before eating, after using the toilet or after going out. Experts advise cancelling play dates, group activities and visits with friends or other families, and ideally to stay at home, except for trips to buy food and supplies. Talk to your kids about social distancing - and why it’s not a good idea to hug or kiss people right now, or even shake hands. Kids really get into the idea of using the elbow or foot bump instead. Kids will feel calmer if you are straight with them about what’s going on. My teenager wanted to know how social distancing works to “flatten the curve.” Her peers had already been talking online about people getting sick and dying
If you are at home all day with the kids, here is a list of ideas and online activities to keep kids occupied and learning, instead of watching endless movies or zoning out on social media. Time Magazine recommends establishing a routine at home with kids as they are used to following a daily schedule, especially if they’re already at school.
10) Scholastic has set up structured on-line learning programs for kids from pre-school to high school. Khan Academy also has self-paced video tutorials on a range of subjects. Khan Academy has also created schedule templates for parents to keep the days filled for older kids who are normally at school, to keep them learning and stay focused. 11) Join the Coronavirus Parenting Hacks Facebook Group to get more ideas or to share some that are working for you.
1) Spend some time reading every day with younger kids or encouraging older kids to read by themselves. Stories are circulating of kids in quarantine reading so much that their literacy levels and language skills are jumping whole levels. Give young children audio books to listen to. Amazon has a good selection of audio books for kids and you can join Kindle Unlimited for a low monthly fee to download an unlimited number of Kindle books for older kids. 2) Many libraries around the world, although closed to the public, have set up virtual story times or live- streamed reading events on the Internet. The Brooklyn Public libraries are offering both recorded and streamed events or search online for others. 3) Get older kids to engage in learning play. Challenge kids to set up a tent or build a fort in the yard, working together. This is a good time to find some simple science projects online: create salt or sugar crystals, see how many insects they can find in the yard and look them up on the internet, examine parts of plants under a microscope or magnifying glass, do simple experiments with water and acoustics – fill a series of empty glass bottles to different levels with water and see how the sounds are different in each bottle when you tap the bottle with a spoon. Just Google simple science experiments with kids for more ideas.

For the first decade Wayan Manis worked with me I tried to persuade her that a bank account was a good thing. She couldn’t see the sense of it. The family was poor. No one she knew had a bank account; if you needed money, you pawned your gold and sold the pig. But then her daughter became desperately ill and I had to raise 85 million juta in a few days for urgent surgery.
We hesitate to define ourselves as wise because, if we’re honest, the older we get the less we know (or can remember). And what is ‘wisdom’, anyway? One definition is ‘the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment’. As we get older we find ourselves in situations where we can offer guidance and support to others. We’ve walked that path, we’ve fallen off it, we learned, we climbed back up and moved on. We’ve been there/done that so many times in our 60, 70, 80 years that we’ve inevitably accumulated a motley collection of experience, knowledge and good judgment which for the purpose of this article I’m going to call wisdom. It took a long time to collect this bag of wisdom. The acquisition was lengthy, often painful, sometimes arduous or dangerous or tedious, sometimes interesting, or so subtle we didn’t realize we were gathering it over time. Hearts were broken, loved ones died in our arms, babies were born, jobs and homes were lost and found. We learned to deal with bullies and bosses. There is nothing left to learn the hard way. We learned that we could choose to be happy or choose to be miserable, and that we attract those energies to us. So what can we do with this harvest? Share it. We all have knowledge that will benefit others. Regardless of our age, gender, background or culture, we can all mentor the communities in which we live. As tamu we’re not allowed to volunteer, but we can educate and assist the Balinese families that work with us directly. The last decade has brought huge social change to the Balinese and many struggle to adapt. Basic money management and strategic planning skills are often lacking. When I first moved here 20 years ago there wasn’t much cash around. Then land values in Ubud started to rise. In the last decade as families sold their land tsunamis of cash have washed through the compounds then receded, leaving nothing behind. With no culture of saving or financial planning, the usual Balinese response to large amounts of money was to share it with the extended family, buy new vehicles and renovate the temple. In a year it would all be
Wayan Manis’ financial education began that week, and since then she’s become a strategic planner and a canny saver. She grew observant and wise, sometimes swimming against the cultural current. She now has private medical insurance for the whole family and a healthy term deposit (they did well in the bamboo straw business before the
Within my own culture, everyone in my generation I talk to feels grateful that we were born when we were. We had the opportunity to explore a calmer, kinder world as yet unspoiled by mass tourism and unrealistic expectations. I’ve seen a big spike in anxiety in younger people in our own cultures over the past few years. And no wonder. It’s an increasingly dark and chaotic world. Climate crisis, a dangerous swing to right wing politics, increasing misogyny, environmental degradation, spiritual poverty, potential pandemics, student debt … all these are a heavy burden for the thoughtful.
Chinese undercut it). Thanks to her management, they are planning to build a little salon for local women because the village doesn’t have one. Wayan doesn’t want to become reliant on the tourism industry – she’s seen what happens to the local economy when the tourists dry up. We have been forged by life as links in the chain of wisdom that spans cultures and generations. I admire the way Wayan Manis has observed the way I do things and thought about the benefits in the context of her family before selectively adopting certain practices. There is zero tolerance for litter in her compound. The family eats more vegetables and less meat and fried food than it used to. She ensures that the elders drink enough water -- a big issue here; many Balinese are chronically dehydrated, leading to kidney stones and other ailments. The family dogs are well-fed, sterilized and vaccinated, and her daughter bullies/persuades the neighbours to follow suit. They no longer keep pigs; she crunched the numbers and discovered that the family would earn more by having rental units in that space. These were built with a little design help from me using money she had already saved.
It’s hard. We can help. We’re in a position to offer balance and perspective. Not necessarily advice, but just to hold the space for those that need to talk or share their distress. Sometimes we have specific information that is helpful. We don’t know how much we know, and how useful the wisdom we’ve collected so painfully over time can be. I was able to serve an old friend dying of cancer by sitting with her grown children and explaining very carefully what was going to happen medically, financially and legally so they wouldn’t be blindsided by events in the months to come. As we learned from our mentors, we become mentors ourselves.
Wayan Manis has become a trusted and respected mentor in her banjar. She supports victims of domestic violence, shares resources with poorer neighbours and when there is piece work to be done in our projects, she carefully selects the women who need the work most. I am in awe of how much this woman, born very poor, has grown to become a wise pillar of her community. I have mentored Wayan Manis through some of these changes but many she has figured out on her own. Both of the kids have been through the one-year course at Campuhan College and continue to network with the alumni

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH This Damn Virus - Why the Global Panic? This flu virus is a nasty creature. It mutates often. In its mild forms it attacks the cells of our nose and throat. Severe forms go deeper. It can damage our lungs, causing infections and pneumonia. The coronavirus, which is now on every continent except Antarctica, is such a severe virus. Of course, we do have a regular flu season - each winter millions of people get it. Even with only partially effective flu vaccines, about 30,000 of Americans (or one in a thousand), die from it. The victims tend to be very young, old or have medical issues already.
1) Avoid the (health-related) news We all want to keep up to date, but when you have health anxiety the need to check and read the latest updates can become compulsive, feeding the anxiety. Try having a news detox, or allocating yourself a time limit for reading or watching news. If you’re really worried about missing something crucial, you can always tell friends and family to contact you in the event of an emergency situation in order to keep you informed.
body parts like you’re in the warm-up section of a hippie acting class, exercise will help get the adrenaline out of your system and channel the panic elsewhere. 6) Breathing and grounding exercises From guided breathing-work to using a strong pleasant smell ( like lavender oil), grounding exercises can help bring you back to reality. You can look for examples online, but sometimes, something as simple as sitting on the floor can help. 7) Allocate yourself a daily ‘worry period’
Given this reality, why worry about this new infection called Covid-19? We worry because of how widely it has spread.
Give yourself half an hour to worry about this to your heart’s content, and then you have to go and do something else.
Most of us, having had seasonal flu, have some level of immunity to it. Not so with Covid-19, so the number of possible infections, worldwide, is billions.
8) Treat yourself Anything that will give you a little boost can help. It doesn’t need to involve spending money: you can also cook yourself something nice, have a hot bath, or listen to a song you love.
The important question now is what can you, the person best situated to protect yourself and your loved ones against Covid-19, do? The measures are simple -Social distance, wash your hands, space yourself about 1.5 meters apart in group situations, stay home if you are ill or immunocompromised. Sadly…many more people will perish due to the global reaction to the virus (panic & anxiety) than the viral pandemic will cause. Think about it, MOST people in the world will NOT get the virus, those that do will be more likely to get mild flu like symptoms and recover. The global rate death due to cardiovascular disease, diabetes etc will rise do to the stress that the global reaction is causing. So let’s all settle down a bit.
Mental Health The entire world is affected by this thing and millions of people will be put in dire circumstances either financially, or socially, being separated or isolated from loved ones. To say the least this Virus is a bitch. Anxiety can really paralyse someone, distorts their thinking, and they can’t do anything they normally do because they’re so worried they can’t even sleep or eat. When a global pandemic is taking up most of the media conversation, it can be even more difficult for people who suffer from anxiety to stay calm. Here is some advice that may give some comfort to those of you who are struggling.
2) Try not to seek constant reassurance Seeking reassurance can make you feel calmer for a little while, but it’s usually temporary. Your brain creates a feedback cycle where you become increasingly reliant on reassurance, which only serves to reinforce the anxiety. 3) Introduce an absolute ban on Googling symptoms Dr Google is not, and never will be, your friend, especially not when you are a sufferer of health anxiety. Nor will message-boards and forums. Try to remember that people visit these places when they have reason to be concerned. Once you start understanding it’s a skewed lens, you’ll be better able to put things in perspective.
9) Remember that your anxious state isn’t permanent When you are in it, anxiety always feels as though it will never end, but it will. It’s hard to remember this, but do try. 10) LAUGH! Watch a funny movie or perhaps get someone to forward you some of the wicked humour that’s circulating at the moment. Laughter releases endorphins which counteracts anxiety. And remember …THIS TO WILL PASS ☺
4) Try a countering technique Combat confronting thoughts with a rational counterstatement. For example, if your persistent thought is something like “Everyone I love will die from this virus” you can counter it with factual statements such as “Actually, most people who get Covid-19 are likely to make a full recovery, and that’s assuming your loved ones catch it at all.

WOMAN TALK!
Prami Pratiwi Radcliffe, How Applying Tri Hita Karana Helps Her Achieve Balance Modern Balinese women exists and they are the backbones of our economy. Their success stories deserve to be more recognized and celebrated. The first woman we interview for Women Talk is Prami Pratiwi Radcliffe. She is a mother of two bright children, a wife, and and highly educated Denpasar native who has a flourishing career as the Public Relations for luxurious jewelry brands like The Ritz Carlton, The Four Seasons and Alenka and Margo besides acting as the Managing Director of PT. Pelangi Emas and Snacks Snacks Indonesia, a retail management company where she is in charge for managing and operating all five merchandise stores and a food & baverage company with 4 outlets, both in Bali Zoo. She has traveled to 35 countries and 92 cities around the world. 1. Tell me how your parents have empowered you? As long as I can remember, my parents are constantly working and learning, until now. My father Prof. Dr. IKG Bendesa, M.A.D.E is a Professor loves what he does, he has great interest in economy, philosophy and is very patriotic towards his country.
asked what we wanted to do with it. One day, she taught us to purchase a piece of jewelry. She informed us of the value and what it would mean in the future. So we both got a gold ring with blue sapphire and zirconia. When we were teenagers, our parents decided that we shall no longer require housemaid assistance around the house. They thought we became spoilt. So on top of our busy high school life, after school classes and extra curriculum we had to do chores, this time it includes doing the offerings, washing and ironing clothes besides cleaning the house. At the time, my sister and I thought we were adopted kids since we feel we have to do so much. Now we understand, that our parents was teaching us discipline and time management aside from learning independency for the future. 2. How do you incorporate Balinese culture in your daily life while you are overseas? What knowledge or wisdom do you share to your children about it while being away from home? Tri Hita Karana is a concept that we live by and instils in our family. Preserving the balance and harmony in life and environment is really important. We teach our children as we go; lead and explain through examples. My kids are 6 years and 20 months old. My 6 years old have the understanding of gratitude, worshipping God, keeping the harmony with family, friends and environment. Although we don’t live in Bali, we still organize their Balinese Otonan. My son is always the first to initiate prayers when it’s full moon, regardless where we are in the world.
Over the years, I have witnessed my parents are generous in donating and sponsoring students. They live by the saying “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. My business also uses this base in our HR department; to give opportunity to people or my team and invest in their growth. We have training programs to equip our team to be better professionals, so if one day one decided to advance on, they leave with knowledge. I have also picked up my reading habit that leads to curiosities from my Dad. My Dad subscribes to The Economist, Nat Geo, Times, Tempo, Kompas and other local papers. He would make us read one article from one of the publications a couple of times a week then asked us to share what we thought of the article and discussed the article. I dreaded it back then, but I reap it now. In the meantime, we learn our financial lessons from my mother, Dra. IGAP Wirathi Mp. In primary school she would give us one time weekly allowances to spend on lunch order at school (we normally have healthy home packed lunch) or save the money. Mum would also pay us if we help with house. She would keep the money we earned/saved where we have access to it. On the final days that we were about to move to back to Bali, she told us how much we each have in our saving account and
3. What are your tips in successfully maintaining a mixed race marriage with different cultural background while pursuing your ambitions and maintaining your own identity? We’ve are going on our 13th year of marriage. To be really honest, the cultural difference has no significance. My husband is British, his traditions is very similar to ours; respecting the elderly, family, other people, being courteous, and have manners. Our traditions are just the same. In preserving our marriage, my personal thought I can share is really to be with someone who shares the same values in
life. Perhaps the only difference is my husband is very punctual in his time management. He is always on English time, while I am on Bali time. 4. What is it that makes you proud of being a Balinese and how does living in other countries makes you appreciate your own culture? What makes me proud, is my roots, the values I was raised in and my culture. In Bali, we live in a social community or as one live in a Banjar. This social community, is quite unique since no one else in the world has it. Where we Balinese have Banjar since eons, people in other parts of the world are starting to learn about building a community and how they have researched that living in a community contributes to happiness, better health, less crime due to better surveillance and most importantly there is a sense of belonging. There will always be someone that looks over and helps you. In the other part of the world, you are on your own. Balinese lifestyle and easy going approach on life is also something that I cherish. We are generally happy people and smile a lot although there is no particular reason. Since we were born we are exposed to big loving family/ community, there is always a helping hand (for free), our sights are teased with burst of colours (from flowers, plants, sceneries), and taste bud is bursting from our spices, gender equality (you can be friends and hang out with different sex, its not a problem), we have freedom to wear what we want, we can climb mountains, swim the ocean or get our feet muddy dirty in the rice field anytime! * For your reference, my adult life so far, we have lived in Bali, Bangkok, Manila, Phuket, presently Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Currently we live in Sinai desert by the Red Sea. Anywhere I have lived before, we have access to fresh produce; eat any vegetables, fruits, meat, fish we wanted, its not the case here. We have to wait for produces to be delivered from Cairo or other parts of Egypt since nothing grows here. Wearing sleeveless or anything that reveals lots of skin would be frowned upon, talking to opposite sex more than 5 minutes could create suspicions. None of this exist in Bali.

R O TA R Y NEWS Why be a Rotarian? Do you like volunteering? Helping others by sharing your time and skills? Perhaps you have never had the opportunity and just want to learn more? Rotary is an International organization of men and women who enjoy: connecting with others both within the organization and local community, helping those in need, and perhaps even finding a new purpose within your own life. The topics range from Education and Health needs, basic Water and Sanitation, and more. Check out www. rotary.org to find out more on the types of projects Rotary supports. Maybe Rotary is the place for you! Personally, I love volunteering - it’s a bit of an addiction once you get into it! My mom started me at the early age of 10 helping at a recycling center in New Jersey many many years ago. It just grew from there with volunteering with the Girl Scouts and as I got older the Audubon Society, and Farallon marine sanctuary out of San Francisco; so joining Rotary seemed like a natural progression.
ways. He even started an organization called: BATI - Bali Appropriate Technology Institut. An educational center in Bali that trains locals how to do it simply. The chief was interested but didn’t believe it was really possible. The only obstacle for Rus was funding. A group of Rotarians from Florida USA were visiting and loved the idea of supporting a water project and with the help of a local Rotary Club (RCBS) to host the project, the ideas grew. A team was formed and the process to get funding began. It took 3 years to get the Global Grant approved but at last it was and the project began. It started with a training program at BATI - Rus, teaching 15 locals and Rotarian Florian from RCBS how to build their own water tanks using cement and wire. This was a very important step in the process as it gave the locals the knowledge how to build water tanks themselves under the direct supervision of Rus Alit. With this knowledge they could build more tanks around the village as well as maintain the existing system. They took pride in being the ones to provide water to the people within their own village instead of hiring outsiders. The training took 5 days and was held in Tabanan at the BATI training facility. They learned how to make water tanks, water filtrations systems, and how to make a septic system.
was enough to push it up the last part of the steep hill at the village. It wasn’t until the system was tested and water flowed out of the pipe that the chief believed it and the smile of amazement on his face told the story. He couldn’t believe it was really true! Not only was it running, it was gushing out the pipe! The 4 water tanks were filled in 2 hours, 24,000 litres of water! Helping over 1000 families. Everyone was very excited to see water in the village at last. Jeni and fellow RCBS members came to the village during each step of the process. “I never gave up hope that this project could become a reality because I knew Rus was just the person who could make it happen. It’s a good feeling to know you have been a small part in helping so many.” Jeni For Rus and the chief of the village it was a 7 year dream come true!
Rus Alit with the group of locals from Datah and Nawa Kerti learning how to make water tanks and water filtrations systems using local materials.
I joined Rotary in Bali about 4 years ago with ideas bursting at the seams on how I thought I could help make the world a better place. Over the years, I’ve learned a few things how to do that just a little better and here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way: 1. Ideas that come from within the community are most likely to succeed. What “westerners or non-locals” feel is best for a community might not always be what is really needed or desired. Connect with the locals to find out what their real needs are and work towards a solution together. 2. Build a team; of Rotarians, experts, and locals. 3. Educate - teach skills how to do things versus giving hand outs which result in better long term success.
Hands on learning building a lid for the water tanks at BATI.
The project I’m currently involved in is a Water and Sanitation project located in Karangasem, Bali in the Village of Datah - near Amed. It all started 7 years ago with an idea coming from one of the most remarkable people I have ever met, Rus Alit. Rus is a Balinese man in his 70’s with a mission to help villages in the most difficult areas, get water and clean water at that. Water is life and he knows it well having grown up in a small village in Bali himself. Rus had been talking with the chief of Datah for many years on how to get water to his village. The stream below flowed strong but access was difficult. It was way down a steep trail into the valley. Getting water up the steep hillside seemed an impossible task. However, Rus had the knowledge how, he was an expert in appropriate technology using only local materials in the most simple and low tech
After the training workshop was finished, work began in the village of Datah. 2 kilometres of water pipes were laid along the sides of the stream uphill from where the 4 new 6,000 liter water tanks were built. It was a gravity fed system and no pumps were needed. The chief was still very sceptical as to how water could run uphill but with a long enough run upstream, the pressure

Alternative Voice Lost in a Sea of Anomie? Go Single Issue & Change the World... “May you live in interesting times”, runs the apochryphal Chinese curse. Whatever the source, we all get the meaning well enough. In fact, the closest the Chinese have to this saying is “...better to live as a dog in a time of peace, than a human in time of war”. Not quite the same thing at all. Whatever the case, we are living at a time of unparalleled wealth, scientific, educational and medical advancement in a world, which in relative terms, has never been so peaceful.
degree. And not only that, the pace of this evolution has become turbo-charged. We hold the solution to our existing problems and any other problems we may create for ourselve in our own hands. We have or can find the solutions, if only we have the will and the foresight. That’s a big if... but it’s do-able.
And yet there is a great sense of unease abroad in the world today. Why is that?
Nationalism has had a bad rap over the last 150 years, being blamed for an awful lot of bloodshed. And it’s true. Nevertheless, until nations can devolve sufficient power to their citizens allowing the state to progressively cede powers to larger groupings, leading eventually to some form of federated world government, we shall need to make do with them as best we can.
Another big reason for it is inequality. The world may be richer than ever before but most of us struggle increasingly hard to even maintain our lot. Something is amiss. We know the globalisation of markets has created enrormous wealth for the few but we now see that this wealth does not filter down to the rest of us, although we are the ones who paid for it. Not only does globalisation only enrich the few but we now know that even when it works, it is economically unsustainable to the extent that it becomes a threat to world peace, as nations seek to protect themselves from its malign effects.
And beyond this there lies one other cause for such existential unease. What of our post-human future? Certain of our most admired scientists and thinkers seriously warn us of the possibility that the human race can be subsumed or destroyed by our computers. Either that or an advanced cyber-human elite will lord it over us as a subclass of flawed original humans in service to them. That is... if we have not been made ‘redundant’ and cease to be. None of this is writ in stone, but be in no doubt, it is a real possibility. That said, in a very short time, some 150,000 years, we humans evolved culturally and socially to an extraordinary
Take war, for example. Throughout the 20th Century our world was militarised as never before. If a country was at war it meant every able man or woman was conscripted to fight or work in factories. Not only that, all civilians including children and the aged were targets too. Today the concept of the nation in arms no longer works. People won’t do it any more. The state must now rely on a small number of paid volunteers to bear arms plus technicians to man the fearsome arsenals they maintain. That people are patriotic is not a bad thing, when it means love of country and one’s community. Being patriotic no longer means that you have to buy into someone telling you to hate, fight and kill somebody you don’t know and who never did you any harm.
The obvious reason that springs to mind would be global warming. I think most of us get it that unless the problem of climate change is effectively addressed very soon, and as yet there’s no sign of that , we will be facing an uncomfortable future.
As a result political populism is alive and well, playing to the lowest common denominator in a race to the bottom. It is hard to see hope for improvement from our politicians of any stripe, in thrall as they are to the seriously rich. How can we look to them when we see all the promise of technology for a better world is co-opted and turned against us?
see to that, but both can be overcome.
For any of this to come to pass it is necessary for us to believe it can be done and to take what action we can to make it happen. What we do may or may not amount to very much, depending upon circumstance and inclination. The first step is to think it through, coming to the realisation that something of the kind is badly needed and take it from there.
One thing is for sure, if we are to succeed, we are going to have think big and not allow vested interests to stand in our way. And, for that to happen we have to re-assert the rights of the commons. Re-invigorate the concept of citizenship, with it’s rights and obligations. We need to order our societies to honour those who serve the community, not those who enrich themselves at its expense. There is already enough talent and wealth in the world for all its people to be housed, educated and cared for medically throughout their lives. It would certainly help if there were fewer of us and there are non-dictatorial ways for that to happen naturally. People could enjoy as much leisure time as they work, in other words the sale of labour would not be a necessity. Government would be devolved as much as possible so communities would regulate themselves to a far greater degree. There can still be wealthy people, but no one need be disadvantaged by them since ultimately wealth and property would revert to the commons. Organising societies in such a way is not idle utopianism. There is nothing impossible about any of it. That does not mean it will be easy to do. Custom and vested interests will
NC/Ho/U-11 Sept 19
There is enormous power in the weight of a consensus whose time has come. Taking an interest and informing yourself on the issues involved will almost certainly lead you to connect with other people, who are also thinking along these lines. This helps lessen the feeling of powerlessness that can so easily overwhelm us. If you have a vote, use it. No need to agonise or play politics. It is very simple. Go single issue. Just make climate change or homelessness the sole criteria and vote for whoever’s going to really do something about it. If enough of us do that the pols will take note and things will change. It’s true, we get the politicians we deserve. At the end of the day, there is no opting out. Each of us is here for the duration. One way or another, we’re involved.

QUICK REVIEW
Restaurant Review A Chinese Noodle House Hongalia is a simple noodle house, all of which are made in-house. For any selected dish you can choose to have it with Kwetiau [rice], egg, curly or fine [vermicelli] noodles. The location is almost beside the main entrance to the Arma Museum.
You can start with Dim Sum [chicken, pork or shrimp], Fried Dumplings [chicken or shrimp], or Gyoza which is the Japanese version of a Chinese dumpling, although at Hongolia they are served deep fried rather than in the Japanese style of being steamed/boiled then pan seared on one side, which was disappointing. Steam Buns are either pork/chicken or red bean.

Soup Hongalia uses carrots, potato and onion with the chicken. However it is for the home-made noodles that people come here. The Bakmie can be just chicken or the special with Chasio, the Chinese method for flavouring and roasting meat [pork] on top, both are with three dumplings, vegetables and soup. There are also Bakmie specials with beef or pork, the meat being braised oriental style, also served with vegetables, wonton and soup. Halal Bakmie can be Ayam Kampoeng, or Tofu/Tempe. The Kwetiau noodles can be fried or boiled. Fried Beef or Seafood [fish ball and shrimp] or the Special with sliced chicken, fish ball, shrimp and vegetables. If you prefer a little spice in your life then order the Fried Kwetiau Kangkung Balacan, rice noodles with chicken, fish ball, shrimp, egg and water spinach spiced with shrimp paste [pictured]. There is a similar range of boiled Kwetiau dishes.
Hongalia also offers non-noodle dishes, most of which are classic Chinese street food such as the Foo Yung Hai, a flat omelette stuffed with sliced chicken and mixed vegetables, served with rice and soup, simple food, simple price [Rp.45,000]. Rice dishes can be with Chasio [pork], Oriental Braised Beef or Pork. Pork ribs are also on the menu, Bak More International starters include a Basket of French Fries, Kut The, ribs with cinnamon, garlic, black soy, yam and Fried Onion Rings or Sweet Potato, Vegetarian Lumpia, wolfberry. Many stir-fried vegetable dishes can be ordered as sides or as mains. There are also Fried Rice dishes Thai Tofu/tempe or crisp Mushrooms. style [chicken, pork, pineapple, green onion and fried egg] Soups can be the Thai Tom Yum to whatever spice level you and Vietnamese style [chicken salted and dried, shrimp, fish want or the very Chinese Chicken & Corn or Dumpling ball and fried egg] as well as just Seafood [shrimp, fish ball, Soups [chicken or shrimp] with soya sauce. Update A La la! Is a French bistro in Umalas II [Jln. Bumbak, Gang Carik]. Mediterranean style with a few Asian twists. Lunch and Dinner [breakfast to come soon], you can start with a Terrine of rabbit, pork and chicken livers with walnut, squash seeds, arak and thyme, on toast of course. Or A Vol au Vent, filled with fish and mushrooms in a béchamel sauce, For the mains a Chicken Fillet is with grain mustard, honey rosemary potato soufflé and a mushroom flan, or Beef many ways [Bourguignon, Tenderloin with gratin dauphinois, Sirloin or Tartare]. Fish can be Grilled with mango sauce, Tuna
Teriyaki, Fish Steak with lemon or Brochettes with pesto. Extra delights for dinner include Foie Gras Terrine [duck with mango chutney], Escargots, a Lamb Shoulder Confit scented with anise, or a Duck breast cooked a l’Orange with a duck leg confit. For dessert the usual Crème Brulee plus Lemon Pie, Apple Crumble, Cheesecake and an unusual Ile Flottante [an island of meringue floating in a vanilla sauce with almonds].
Kopi Joe is a budget priced espresso bar in the Sanur Arcade on The ByPass, Small and friendly it offers a wide range of coffee drinks, all served with a smile and a amazingly low prices. It is located next door to the popular Cosmic Diner, that is the one with the train carriage as a part of its décor.
Lucky 8 is a first in Bali. Located upstairs above the Kopi Joe coffee house at the Sanur Arcade, it serves authentic Taiwanese bubble tea in a variety of flavours. Unique and very different, the teas are topped with bubbes made from tapioca. It has proved to be so popular that they sometimes even sell out before closing time. La Baracca is Italian, well estanlished in Seminyak and
Canggu it is also found in Ubud on Jln. Suweta. Their Antipasti list is quite extensive. Apart from the Bruschetta options there is Carpaccio di Zucchini, paper thin slices of zucchini with tomatoes, nuts and basil oil or Parmigiana di Melazane, fried eggplant with tomato sauce, mozzarella and parmesan. Tataki di Tonno is pan seared tuna slices on a bed of mango and nuts. Star of the Antipasti is the Burrata cheese, it can be tossed in a fresh salad and served with toast or combined with Italian parma ham. For Pasta the Gnocchi, Ravioli, Papperdelle and Tortellii are all made on thee premises. Top of the list is their Gnocchi Sorrentina, potato gnocchi in a tomato and basil sauce topped with melted mozzarella and parmesan and the Ravioli Burrata Gamberi e Zucchini, prawn and zucchini ravioli in a parmesan sauce topped with fresh burrata cheese. Mains are everything from a simple Sicilian Polpette, beef meat balls in a tomato sauce to the more exotic Zuppa di Pesce, a seafood soup of shrimp, squid, clams and tuna, and toast for dunking. Many Pizzas including some they actually call Sexy [you would have to have a very strange sense of humour] although the Polpette Pizza, with meat balls and basil, is very interesting. Desserts are the standard Italian offerings. Many of the dishes can be ordered Vegan or Gluten Free.
Biku does High Tea! Not just at 4.00 p.m. but any time, all day. A Pot of Tea [you pay a little extra if you want that to be from their Limited Edition teas], freshly baked Scones with jam and cream, Finger Sandwiches of cucumber [from the very traditional English High Tea], salmon and cream cheese or ham and mustard. You can have a mini Spinach Quiche
and Sweet Treats. If you would prefer their Sparkling High Tea then a glass of champagne can be added. The kids are not forgotten, as they have their own mini Children’s High Tea to keep them occupied as well.
Al Diwan is Bali’s rare Lebanese restaurant. There have
been a few before, some of which were very good, but most have been and gone. This one is on Jln. Petitenget, Kerobokan, and has a very extensive menu. Start with a dip, a variety of Hummous; Tahini [chickpeas, tahini, garlic and lemon], Bilahme [with sautéed beef] or Smoked Eggplant. Sujuk are lamb sausages, and Makanek are spicy lamb sausages. Healthy and tasty are the Kibbee Meklieh, spiced lamb and pine nuts encased in a patty of minced lamb and cracked wheat. Their Mixed Grill combines the three different grills on the menu; lamb, chicken and spiced lamb. The seafood dishes are rather international except for the Samke Harra, baked and well spiced, covered with tahini. Quite a range of Lebanese desserts; Namoura [coconut cakes with syrup and pistachio], Qatayef [sweet dumplings stuffed with cream] and Mahlabiyeh, rose water flavoured corn flour custard.
Indigo on Jln. Pantai Berawa, Canggu, is quality Japanese.
They offer classic dishes as well as their innovative ‘new style’ sashimi and the unusual Yakimono dishes cooked over the charcoal grill. Start with a refreshing Soba Noodle Salad or Alaskan King Crab and Tuna Tartare. The new style Sashimi can be Salmon, Otoro, Red Snapper or Scallop. Their Yakimono can be seafood, chicken or beef. For something very different try the Gyoza stuffed with foie gras. For lunch their de luxe BENTO boxes are the way to go.

Local News Bali authorities to limit Nyepi celebrations following social distancing advisory Authorities in Bali today announced a number of limitations for celebrations around the Balinese Day of Silence or Nyepi on March 25, along with the expectations that local residents will still adhere to previous advisories from the central and provincial governments amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.
24 Bali sets ‘alert’ status amid COVID-19 outbreak, rolls out advisory on social distancing The Bali provincial government declared an “alert” level status for the island amid the COVID-19 pandemic today, followed by an advisory for local residents to stay at home and avoid crowded places. “Citizens are advised to avoid shopping centers, entertainment areas and other crowded places until March 30,” a press statement signed by Bali Governor Wayan Koster today reads. Today marks the beginning of school shutting down for at least the next two weeks in Bali, a move that has also been taken by leaders in other provinces in Indonesia, including West Nusa Tenggara, Jakarta and Central Java. With the “alert” status in Bali, government officials are also expected to work from home with all government-related activities suspended until March 30. Civil servants are also barred from traveling, both domestically and internationally, on official novel coronavirus. Many experts have noted the importance trips in order to minimize their chances of contracting the virus. of social distancing as an effective means to contain the pandemic.
The circular, signed by Bali Governor Wayan Koster, the head of Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI) in Bali I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, and the chief of Bali’s traditional village council Ida Panglingsir Agung Putra Sukahet, places limits on the number of participants, location and duration of several ceremonies and parades that are traditionally synonymous with Nyepi. This includes the Ogoh-Ogoh parade that usually takes place on the eve of Nyepi, which they note as not being an “obligation” for Hindus in celebration of the holy day. “Which is why it’s better that Ogoh-Ogoh parade does not take place,” the circular reads. However, should the public decide to go on with the parade, it must be done between 5 and 7pm on March 24 and within the area of their local banjar, or local community organization, under the authority of the local village chief. “It cannot go on beyond that [time],” Sudiana said, as quoted by Kumparan. The Bali provincial government yesterday declared an “alert” level status for the island as part of an effort to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by an advisory for local residents to stay at home and avoid crowded places. As of yesterday, the latest official updates in Bali show that 75 people are being monitored for COVID-19, while 52 others have tested negative for the viral disease. The island has so far recorded one positive case, who is also the first COVID-19 death in the whole of Indonesia. (Coconuts.com 18/03/2020) Nearly 2,000 tourists flock to Bali after West Nusa Tenggara closes access to Gili Islands Tourists visiting the Gili Islands in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) have reportedly made their way to neighboring Bali, following the NTB provincial government’s decision on Sunday to close access to the popular destination from Bali amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a report from Bali Post, which cited authorities from the Port of Padang Bai, the number of tourists taking the fast boat from Gili Trawangan almost doubled yesterday, with 1,951 passengers recorded. NTB declared a state of emergency for the province on Sunday as part of a regional effort to contain the coronavirus outbreak, and decided to close tourist access to the Gili Islands from Bali for at least the next two weeks. The decision came as a preemptive measure, NTB Governor Zulkieflimansyah said, noting that at least one positive case for the coronavirus has been officially recorded in Bali. “According to a circular issued by the NTB provincial government and the regent of North Lombok, fastboats are prohibited from operating to Gili Trawangan for 14 days, from March 16 to March 30. After that date, the decision will be reevaluated by the local authorities,” Padang Bai Port Authority (KSOP) head Ni Luh Putu Eka Suyasmin, told Tribun. Over the years, tourists visiting Bali often continue their trips to Lombok by taking a boat via Bali’s Padang Bai, a trip which takes about 75 to 90 minutes. Regional authorities have said how a miscommunication might have occurred since the declaration, and said that closed access to the Gili Islands only apply for fast boats coming from Bali. “We are closing fast boat access coming from Bali to the three Gilis temporarily. For tourists who are already on the islands can carry on with their vacation, whoever wants to leave can do it at any time and supply of daily goods are still normal,” said I Gede Putu Aryadi, an official from the NTB government, as quoted by state news agency Antara. (Coconuts.com 18/03/2020)
One of the most notable parts of the advisory is the limitation or cancelation of “crowded activities or entertainment” until the set date, which may therefore impact planned events before and after the Balinese Day of Silence, or Nyepi, on March 25, which involves a lot of public gatherings. The advisory includes several social distancing “suggestions” for the public, which advises citizens not to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary, to postpone all activities that will draw the masses, and to avoid traveling to their hometowns or out of town.
Today, Jokowi says the archipelagic nation is not yet considering lockdowns, highlighting that such a decision will come from the central government and not regional authorities. As of this morning, Indonesia has 308 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including a British woman in Bali who was the country’s first COVID-19 death last week. Local health authorities in the province have traced 23 of her close contacts, and said that all of them tested negative for the novel coronavirus. This includes her husband, who had reportedly been with the patient the entire time.
“In regards to religious activities, do as much as possible at home and try not to gather too many people,” the statement reads. There is no mention of closing tourist destinations on the island yet. The statement comes a day after President Joko Widodo advised the nation to “work from home, study from home [and] pray from home,” amid the global outbreak of the
A total of 17 patients are currently under COVID-19 observation in Bali as of yesterday, according to the head of the province’s health agency, Ketut Suarjaya. Five of them have tested negative, while authorities await results from the remaining 12. (Coconuts.com 16/03/2020)
Indonesia to suspend visa-free and visa-on-arrival arrangements for one month to curb spread of coronavirus Indonesia will suspend its visa-free and visa-on-arrival arrangements for one month, starting Friday (March 20), as part of its attempts to contain the coronavirus outbreak in the world’s fourth most populous nation. The change requires all foreigners to apply for a visa at Indonesia’s overseas missions in accordance with the “intention and purpose of the visits”, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said on Tuesday. “When applying for the visa, they must attach a health certificate from health authorities in their respective countries,” she added in a statement. The new travel policy will affect all foreigners, from tourists to business people and diplomats. At the same time, Indonesia will ban the entry and transit of foreign nationals who have been, in the past 14 days, to Iran and seven countries in Europe: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Vatican City and UK. Yet another measure requires all arriving visitors to fill a health alert card on their travel history, and hand it to the authorities at the Indonesian points of entry. “If the travel history shows that in the last 14 days the person concerned has visited these countries, then the person concerned may be refused entry to Indonesia,” Ms Retno said. Earlier restrictions on travellers from China and South Korea’s Daegu city and Gyeongsangbuk-do province will continue, she added.
the Riau Islands, said Mr Achmad Yurianto, the government spokesman for Covid-19 management. He also said the capital, Jakarta, contributed the biggest number of infected cases.
“We understand that as the country’s gateway, Jakarta is quite big, and as the mobility of its population is very high, the probability of contact (by the people) with positive cases is quite high,” he added. The number of deaths remains at five, while nine people have recovered and returned home, said Mr Achmad, who is also the Health Ministry’s director Meanwhile, the Indonesian government has advised its citizens general for disease control and prevention. to avoid non-essential travel abroad. Indonesians who visit the eight countries on the ban list will be given extra health He added that not everyone identified through contact tracing examination on their arrival home, and they will be quarantined are being treated at hospitals. Dozens of them with mild symptoms at government facilities for 14 days when found to show have been asked to self-isolate at home. Apart from 132 referral symptoms of the Covid-19 disease. Those with no symptoms hospitals nationwide, the government has appointed 109 will be advised to do a 14-day self-quarantine. Indonesia military hospitals, 53 police hospitals and 65 hospitals run by reported another 38 cases of coronavirus infections on state-owned enterprises to treat Covid-19 patients. Several private Friday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 308. Most hospitals are also participating in the treatment of Covid-19 of the new cases are from Jakarta, East Java, Central Java and patients, Mr Achmad said. (straitstimes.com 19/3/2020).
Bali internet shutdown for Nyepi to go ahead, ‘vital’ services exempted Bali authorities today confirmed that all internet service on the island will still be suspended for the Balinese Day of Silence or Nyepi on March 25, noting exceptions for a number of “vital” services including hospitals and police stations. The statement comes following rising concerns over access to information amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Internet, television, and social media access will remain cut off for the island starting at 6am on March 25 until 6am on March 26, according to a letter issued by the provincial government. “… Except for vital public facilities such as hospital services, police stations, military, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), fire department, port authority and the airport,” an official circular reads. This is Bali’s third consecutive year of going offline for Nyepi, a policy aimed at a successful and orderly observance of the Day of Silence, when Balinese Hindus are expected to self-reflect and therefore do nothing that may interfere with that purpose. The Bali chapter of ARSSI, the association of private hospitals in Indonesia, on March 15 sent a letter to the provincial government requesting for the no-internet policy to be removed and permission to operate ambulances, citing concerns over the current situation with the novel coronavirus outbreak. “We need internet access because we have to coordinate intensively via WhatsApp … so that there is no late handling and preventing cases from increasing, both for COVID-19 and dengue fever,” the letter, signed by ARSSI chairman Fajar Manuaba, reads.
However, the concession for vital services is actually nothing new, as public and emergency services have been excluded from the internet ban in previous years. The government has also confirmed that ambulances will be permitted to operate during Nyepi, as long as they remain in coordination with the local pecalang, or traditional Balinese security forces. According to reports, fake news reporting normal internet services in Bali during Nyepi have been making its rounds recently and subsequently creating confusion among the public, leading to Bali Governor Wayan Koster making a clarification yesterday. “[Internet access] for public services will remain active, and ambulances can operate like normal. And before Nyepi has always been that way, this is nothing new,” Koster said, as quoted by Kompas. (Coconuts.co 19/03/2020)
