MONEY MATTERS How Might a Global Recession Affect You? As hostilities increase in the Middle East and the price of oil goes into panic mode, could this be the trigger for the next and highly predicted recession? The dominant US stock market has enjoyed an almost unprecedented good run since the last recession of 2008/9 which was triggered by the Global Financial Crisis. Bali, Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia have also seen unprecedented levels of growth and development (not all with positive results!) over the same period.
What typically happens in a recession?
What precisely constitutes a ‘recession’?
What can you do about it?
A dictionary definition is ‘A period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activity are reduced, generally identified by a fall in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in two successive quarters.’
The worst thing you can do is panic. Far better to step back and determine what are your needs in the short term and what are your long term goals. The short term is the most pressing as you should always be prepared for a worst-case scenario. This means ensuring you have adequate liquid funds available to see you through any period of difficulty resulting from the loss of your job or a big slump in your business.
It could affect just one country but if it affects the USA then the impact can easily become global. That’s the threat we have at the moment.
Generally unpleasant things like bankruptcies, job losses, loss of homes and cars when loans cannot be repaid, credit dries up making it hard or more expensive to get loans, properties don’t sell and so fall in price, hotels and airlines see a big drop in customers and income, stock markets can fall and the value of savings, investments and pensions can plummet.
What could trigger a recession? President Trump’s policies of lowering taxes and encouraging people to spend have certainly given a boost to the US economy which is enjoying record high employment. The US stock market has reflected this, and is regularly nudging record highs despite a few small blips along the way. But spending and borrowing comes at a price; someone has to pick up the tab when the party is over. Some analysts believe that time is approaching. But there are many other factors that could trigger a global recession. While the world is less reliant on Middle East oil than it was 50 years ago a major disruption to supplies from the region could still have a major impact on the price of oil, as we saw in a matter of hours when drones attacked and seriously damaged Saudi Arabian oil facilities earlier this month. Trump-induced trade wars could also have a major impact on the global economy. At the moment it is still a bit of a poker game, particularly where the two big players, the USA and China are concerned. Brexit, if it goes ahead, can further destabilise international trade. Although the UK will undoubtedly suffer the most Europe also will have to adjust to the loss of one of its biggest trading partners.
This is not the best time in the economic cycle to be investing heavily in a consumer-related business or a new, expensive property. Prices invariably fall during a recession, resulting in bargains being available in the latter stages of a recession before the market picks up again. If you are in the hospitality business a recession presents a good opportunity to close off rooms and get renovations done while there are fewer guests. What about savings and investments?
Finally, there is the ‘technical trigger’ of the so-called ‘inverted yield’ which occurs when interest rates on short-term bonds are higher than the rates paid by long-term bonds. This has now occurred several times in the past few weeks. Why on earth that should trigger a recession might seem a mystery but that is exactly what has happened in the past. The recessions have not followed immediately but usually 12 to 18 months later. Which means the party could go on a bit longer!
People have been talking about a recession for at least a year now. But anyone who decided to cash in their investments a year ago would have missed out this year
on double-digit growth in many stocks and commodity markets. Even gold has risen to a six-year high. While we are inevitably a year closer to a recession than we were a year ago we could still see yet another strong year. It is worth bearing mind that President Trump’s top priority is to get re-elected next year. Strong employment figures and a booming stock market could help him reach that goal so you can rest assured he will be using every trick in the book to achieve it. Having said that, it would still be wise to look at investment sectors that are more recession-proof. A simple example of what happens in a recession is that people delay big purchases like cars or washing machines and cut back on foreign holidays. On the other hand people are unlikely to cut back on cheap meals out such as fast-food restaurants, or beer or toilet rolls! So clearly, shares and funds that invest in fast-moving consumer goods are more likely to prosper in a recession than car manufacturers or airlines. One area worth moving into is infrastructure where governments usually have deep funding to keep projects going. Income equity funds are also a good place to be as they place the emphasis on strong dividend income which can compensate for falling share prices. Utilities like water and electricity also hold their own in a recession as people are unlikely to cut back on either. But, provided that you have sufficient protection to see you through a recession you should not radically change any long term plans or pensions. If you are fortunate enough to have surplus cash at your disposal a recession would give you the opportunity to add to your long-term holdings, especially if prices have fallen. It is so often the contrarians who win in the investment game. They buy when others are selling and sell when others are buying. It’s not easy to do when human nature teaches us to follow the herd. Is there any good news? Yes. Recessions don’t last forever and are always followed by recoveries. Just think back to 2008 when it looked as if the financial world as we knew it was coming to an end and that the banks would fall like dominoes. It didn’t and the banks (minus one or two) are still standing and if you were invested in the wider US stock market you would have doubled your money between March 2009 and July 2010. Provided you have planned well enough to see you safely through a recession you can actually turn it to your advantage by being first off at the gate for the turnaround.

The Many Colours of Recovery Wayan Bimbim has experienced an interesting life which took him from the privileged existence of a spoilt brat in the midst of a doting family to acute heroin addiction at the tender age of 16 and on to a 22 year span of binges, coming clean, relapsing and finally staying clean. What made him get over the final hump was a chance encounter last year with an inspiring drug counsellor called Nev who approaches addiction recovery as a path of joy, or as he puts it, a process to be enjoyed rather than endured.
Most stories of recovering addicts follow a predictable line. When the bottom is reached the addicts finally decide to kick off the drugs, alcohol or other substances or behaviours they are enslaved to and go through a detoxification and reeducation process to help them get their bodies clean and their minds set on recovery. It is by no means an easy path. Withdrawal symptoms are not easy on the body or the mind, a whole set of behaviours has to be undone, unlearned, modified or discarded. Their life cycle is disrupted and needs to be built up anew. The new world of addiction-free existence has to be vigorously maintained and every thought and action that poses a danger to relapse must be scrutinised and consciously held at bay. Not a walk in the park by any means. The recovery process is usually seen as something to be endured and completed; presumably a clean life awaits the recovered addict at the end. However, as any self-respecting drug counsellor will tell you, the relapse rate among recovering substance abusers is still high. Mainly because the recovering addict ultimately returns to his former life with the same environment, the same temptations, the same attractions lurking in the shadows. In a moment of acute stress, a lifechanging circumstance or a major emotional upheaval, the resolve to remain clean is severely weakened and the temptation to just fall back on familiar and feel-good behaviour is just in front of you. Bimbim, the relapsed junkie went exactly through these phases with each addiction treatment-recovery-relapse cycle until he sought treatment and afterwards met Nev who showed him a different way. That there could actually be wholehearted joy in living an addiction-free life was something Bimbim had not experienced before. Bimbim grew up in a well-off traditional Balinese family with 3 doting grandmothers. The harmony in the family was not the best though with frequent fights between his parents, the ill health of his father and his mother’s outside liaisons. Bimbim could not handle the trauma and at 16 he started mainlining heroin to escape. For 4 years he was a hard core druggie until he found the motivation to stop. With the help of his mother who locked him in a room in a remote place, Bimbim endured withdrawal the hard way: cold turkey. For a week he shivered, raged and hallucinated through his symptoms until he felt he had kicked the worst of it. When he emerged he vowed to remain clean. And he did for 14 years. In that time period he started a successful travel and tour company,
married a loving wife and worked hard to reach his ultimate goal of retiring at 40 and enjoying the rest of his life. But the devil was in the details of his best-laid plans and at age 34, when he was at the pinnacle of a successful business career, a series of events happened that greatly affected his life. He lost both parents within a short time of each other and this was the trigger point for relapse. He sought to counter his deep loss, first with social drinking but quickly shifted to using sabusabu (methamphetamines), became addicted in no time, lost his wife and his business and became a drug dealer to finance his addiction. In 2017 he got caught, spent nearly a year in jail and started dealing again upon his release. The relapse was full circle. Thanks to a new girlfriend who supported him wholeheartedly, Bimbim opted once again to become clean and checked himself into a 3-month rehabilitation program at the Bangli Mental Hospital. It was at his ‘graduation’ ceremony that the life changing encounter with Nev took place. Nev, at that moment was making a video about the recovery process for the Movement of Recovery (M.O.R.) project he had started the year before. The M.O.R. project was described in a BA feature article in 2018 as an attempt to create an Indonesia-wide database of resources for recovering addicts. Nev’s premise to make recovery a happy occurrence rather than a dreaded experience sounded very attractive to Bimbim who absorbed that good news and latched onto Nev. As a result of that meeting, the two of them became partners and Bimbim started working for the MOR project. He became chairman of the new Yayasan Pergerakan Pemulihan (Movement of Recovery charity) founded by Nev. This new responsibility opened a whole new ball game for him and he started experiencing some very gratifying personal feelings. He felt good about the mission of the project, about his changed life, saw firsthand how much he could accomplish and felt elated about doing good things not only for himself but also for the people he came in contact with. He noticed that his life was no longer a struggle. Best of all he modelled himself on Nev, starting with the premise that if Nev found untold joy in a drug or alcohol free life, so could he. He got the inspiration from Nev to do the same thing; he also got a lot of inspiration from the recovering addicts he was working with, seeing someone starting up again on a new and healthy path after a wild or debauched past. Becoming clean also made him feel better physically and feel stronger mentally. Bimbim’s personal mission is to work with Balinese recovering addicts and give them a better shot at remaining clean, at rebuilding an exciting and rewarding life. He sees the NGO as modelled on the traditional Balinese way of gotong royong, the age-old reciprocal assistance mode in the Balinese villages where all contribute some work for the common good. ‘Addiction warps the fabric of society’ says Nev, not just in Balinese society but everywhere so it seems logical to the MOR people that healing this tear in the harmony of the villages –that is rent asunder by the addicts’ behaviour and consequent impact on their families and neighbours – is primordial to restoring the harmony in society. To that objective Yayasan Pergerakan Pemulihan is in the process of establishing a community centre in Denpasar that will be a haven for recovering addicts and their families. A place where they will find support, stimulation and inspiration. A place to come and heal. Many times, when recovering addicts re-enter society after their detoxification program, they can still receive support and encouragement from their treatment counsellors but they are far away from the actual treatment centre and the advice of the pros. There are few physical support resources in the environment of the recovering addicts. That is what Bimbim and Nev want to change. The Denpasar support centre, to be opened next year, sponsored by Balinese
C/U/G-16 JAN. 19
businessman Belgi and located centrally next to Kumbasari market in Denpasar, will be a physical place, with social, sporting, entrepreneurial and philanthropic projects. A place for information and resources; a help centre for individuals and families. There is a coffee shop for socialisation, a place for music, table tennis, social games and art. Activities will centre around outreach work and support those coming out of rehab in helping them establish a healthy new lifestyle. Those looking for remunerative activities or looking to acquire new skills can learn new skills or hobbies. One promising enterprise sponsored by the charity is a horticultural project to raise flowers for sale to Singapore. Other absorbing and fun activities available are courses in motorcycle building, making videos.
‘Many patients coming out of rehab are scared and afraid of the world waiting for them to re-enter.’ Says Bimbim. ‘They know the dangers, the temptations, the threat of relapse. We offer them an environment to counter that and bolster their resolve to stay clean.’ Most important, the counsellors actively teach how to find joy in recovery; how to rediscover the pure, simple pleasures of life away from the haze of a drugged mind. How to rediscover the pleasure of listening to music, to the exciting beats of a great band; of letting your body be enthralled to the magic of dance; of discovering the pure morning air at the side of a lake or in the mountains. To encourage this new life style, the charity has 3 big vans available for fun trips, overnight camping and fishing, or moving base camps on off-road motorcycle treks. In the immediate future, M.O.R. will be on the road again on a 7-week trip from Bali to Lampung to gather more data and resources, renew acquaintances with entities they met before and exchange information, give presentations about the recovery process, gain funding and create some awesome recovery events with the underground music and art scene. The main new twist on this tour is to connect with subcultures and reach those who need help. Nev finds that indie bands like Navicula in Bali, Burgerkill, and others are great influencers and very helpful in spreading the drugs-are-not-cool message. There is a lot on the plate of the MOR guys and in a follow-up article we will highlight the ways the charity will create partnerships with sponsors and supporters, how they intend to combat the stigma of addition and how they make recovery a sexy endeavour.

AquaMarine Diving - Bali’s 2020 Divemaster Internship Application is Now Open!
At the end of 2011 AquaMarine introduced an initiative to reinvest in Bali’s dive community: The AMD-B 11 Month PADI Divemaster Internship for Indonesian Citizen Program. This initiative developed as AquaMarine sought ways to invest back into the local community, providing the highest level of training for each
candidate, allowing them to confidently pursue a career in the dive industry.
Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com
To ensure enough time for individual attention and training, AquaMarine takes a maximum of 4 interns each year. During the 11 month programme, the interns have an AMD-B OWSI assigned to them as a mentor who also assists in training them from Open Water Diver all the way to Divemaster. After 6 months of training and having achieved their PADI Divemaster certification, the interns then start to work as Dive Guides under the supervision of AquaMarine’s senior staff. This ensures that they gradually take on increased levels of responsibility whilst developing a solid base for their future careers.
If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.
In 2019, the program’s 8th year, AquaMarine accepted 4 new interns: Cynthia, Lingga, Rama and Risyad. All 4 completed training with flying colours and absolutely love introducing divers to Bali’s underwater wonderland – you are invited to join them! If YOU are a young Indonesian (OR know someone suitable) and ready to start The Adventure of a Lifetime come January 6th, 2020, please email: HRD-Dive@AquaMarineDiving.com. Closing date for applications is October 31, 2019.

Kulture Kid Why do people honk their horns when approaching bridges in Bali?
We all know that locals love to honk their horns for pretty much whatever reason on the roads in Bali, but there is one unseen reason that not many people understand. It’s no secret that Balinese are seriously superstitious, much like most other cultures in the world were only a century or so ago. In fact just 20 years ago my nana in New Zealand was known to still throw salt over her shoulder or wear garlic or onion amulets to ward off the unseen baddies. You’ll find that in most cultures, bridges are considered to be fertile grounds for the nastier things that some believe hang out in the supernatural realm. In the West, it’s the troll under the bridge from the ‘Billy Goats Gruff’ tale; in Bali it is the gamut of manifestations that fall under the buta-kala (demons) or leyak (witches that appear as fireballs) categories. C/CE/I-13 Feb 19
Honking your horn when approaching a bridge is to let the spirits that lurk here know that you’re passing – kind of like saying “I’m passing, please don’t harm me” but with a vehicle horn. Indeed the honk is more like an “excuse me” rather than an explosive blast that drivers here may use in anger! Certainly not all Balinese will honk their horns when approaching a bridge, although the vast majority definitely do – whether they really believe it or not, it makes them feel secure that they’ve “got their bases covered” should there be anything sinister hiding in the depths.

My thoughts are that if only people paid more attention to the nastier and more life threatening stuff that is now found under all bridges in Bali: plastic trash. If every person who honked their horn also stopped littering and reducing the amount of plastic they consume then Bali would be a much nicer place – even if dem trolls still lurk about under dem bridges!

Restaurant & Food
Restaurant Review Cooking with fire! Barbacoa cooks with fire, charcoal and smoke! It has no connection to the ill-fated Jamie Oliver London restaurant of the same name, although the chef once cooked there.
or Fish [cabbage, chipotle mayo, mango salsa]. Equally interesting are the Empanaditas [chicken, prawn or vegetable]. Small pastry sachets stuffed with taste, popular all over South America. A dish you can almost make a meal of, so good. The grilled bread is worth ordering although I am always put off when it is an extra on the menu rather than coming automatically. Here it is worth the price. More substantial starters are the Pan Seared Scallops which are served with a spicy green pea puree, cheese sauce and that classic, Jamon Serrano. Quesadillas are done with a difference, stuffed with shredded pork, pickled onions and mozzarella]. Some returning customers just come for the Grilled Provoleta Cheese with Jamon Serrano, a foodie special.
“Fire allowed [us] to unlock the nutrients, sugars, fats and never-before-seen flavours too,” says chef Lennox Hastie of Sydney’s Firedoor, a restaurant that cooks with no electricity. “What fire does to ingredients can’t be replicated by other cooking techniques.” Gathering for an Aussie barbecue isn’t far removed from what our earliest ancestors did. “The ritual of cooking over fire is one of the most human things you can do,” Hastie says. Barbacoa is sited in a large warehouse type of building with a high roof, very spacious. It seems fitting for the cooking style, which combines standard International fare with a South American touch. One or more of the excellent ‘street food style’ Tacos are a must to start [pictured]. They can be filled with Braised Beef [pico de gallo salsa], Shredded Pork [pickled red onion, caramelized pineapple], Chicken [spicy jalapeno chutney]
Now to the mains and the reason for coming here, the highlight of which is the 8 hour Asado Pork, closely followed by the Pork Spare Ribs. Lovers of perfectly roasted pork will be delighted. Beef options are Wagyu, sirloin and charcoal grilled, served in different sized portions to suit.

Other wood-fired offerings include Lamb Cutlets [mint sauce], Chicken Thighs [lemon and paprika] or Whole Chicken [Mexican rub with parsley and lemon]. Seafood can be Octopus or prawns. A simple alternative is Grilled Chorizos with red pepper jam. There are many sides and salads. The Burnt Carrots with lemon bring the taste of fire to the table, the Spanish style Potatoes [with paprika and garlic aioli] and an unusual and tasty Cabbage Gratin [Gruyere cheese, cream and white wine] make contrasting side dishes whilst I particularly liked the salad of Pickled Beets [quinoa, raisins, yoghurt, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, shaved fennel, and apple in a lime dressing]. To finish, the Dessert Tasting Plate is the perfect ending to a fine night’s dining.

Cooking with fire is an ancient Latin American method. It is surprising that in the days of advanced technology restaurant kitchens, worldwide, are continually returning to the original methods of cooking, re-introducing that elemental flavour that a naked flame gives to food.
An excellent between course snack is the Ceviche, a standard from the fishing villages of Peru, clean and fresh!

Beauty & Health Tattoo Removal We’ve all made mistakes from time to time. Simple mistakes can usually be corrected with an eraser or an apology. But what about permanent mistakes like waking up the next morning with a bad tattoo after a night of drinking? Or many moons later breaking up with your girlfriend or boyfriend with their name tattooed on your arm? What if your new tattooed eyebrows are the wrong shape or colour? What can you do to remove your tattoos? For permanent make-up tattoos like eyebrows or eyeliner you can’t use a laser because it’s too dangerous close to the eyes. Also the ink used on the face is usually different than that used on the body.
• Right after your treatment, the area around the tattoo may become reddish and appear swollen. This is normal and will disappear slowly overtime. BODY TATTOOS ARC Clinic uses state-of-the-art laser technology known as Q-switched Nd:YAG dual light system with the latest Harmony XL®machine available in Bali. Two wavelengths are used to treat a broad range of tattoo colours, including: • Dark colours like black, blue and green. • Brighter colours like red, orange and yellow. HOW DOES IT WORK? The laser produces short pulses of intense light that pass harmlessly through the top layers of the skin to be absorbed by the tattoo pigment. This laser energy causes the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles that are then removed by the body’s natural filtering system. The laser selectively targets the pigment of the tattoo without damaging the surrounding skin. Treatments take minutes, depending, of course, on the size of the tattoo. THE TREATMENT
Permanent make up on the face
The number of treatments necessary and success rate for complete tattoo removal depends on the colours of the tattoo, the skin-type of the individual, the quality and amount of ink used, layering and location of the tattoo. Some tattoos require more treatments. (Some use complex denser inks with deeper skin penetration; Australian tattoos, for example, require more treatments than Bali tattoos, or prison tattoos). Between 4 and 8 treatments or more are usually needed to completely remove a tattoo. The period between treatments is approximately 4 weeks. The tattoo will start to fade one week after each treatment and continue to fade for several months.
PhiRemoval is a special substance that is safe to use on the face using a similar process as tattooing with the same equipment. At Rin Beauty Studio you can fade them to cover ups or completely remove your tattoo. The solution starts working almost immediately, dissolving the ink. A scab will form over the area in the next few days. While the skin heals even more unwanted tattoo ink will be drawn out. The scab will start to peel off naturally, extracting the unwanted tattoo ink. It’s important to keep this area dry during this phase. IMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT PHIREMOVAL • Not all tattoos will reach 95% removal, depending on depth of ink and colours of pigments. • Most tattoos will lighten to the level that they can’t easily be noticed, but small traces of ink will still be present • The number of procedures required for optimal results depends on the size, location and depth. • Most procedures can take 2 or more appointments to either lighten or remove pigment. As one colour comes out, the underlying pigments may appear. • Procedure should be performed 6-8 weeks apart in order to allow the body to remove the maximum amount of tattoo pigment after each procedure • You will continue to see lightening of your tattoo after each procedure as your body disposes of more pigment.
an anti-bacterial ointment and dressing to the treated area. Redness will occur and a hot burning sensation is felt, similar to a severe sunburn. This burning sensation will intensify as the effects of the anesthesia wears off and this is when discomfort is most felt. The area will feel very hot and may sting significantly. This sensation will last up to 1 to 2 hours then subside to the feeling of a mild to moderate sunburn which, depending on the person, can continue for up to 2 days. Redness may remain for the following 3 days. The site will become considerably itchy in the 3 days following treatment and eventually will develop a scab within 7-10 days. This scabbing process is the body’s natural healing process which must be handled gently, allowing the crust to shed naturally. In general the treated areas heal in 10 – 21 days, depending on the skin type of the individual. The redness in the lasertreated sites generally fades in two to three months but may take as long as six months to completely disappear. The redness generally lasts longer in people with fair skin. After healing, the site will gradually and continuously fade. AFTERCARE Showers or baths are not permitted to the treated site for at least 3 days post treatment and the area is to be covered at all times with a sterile dressing to avoid infection. The treated area should be kept clean with frequent continued application of this ointment as directed by the doctor or nurse. Make-up, moisturizers or topical creams are not allowed on or near the treated area for 7-10 days post-treatment. A shower or bath 3 days after treatment is fine using mild soap and warm water, but the treated area should not be scrubbed and should be gently patted dry when toweling until fully healed. However no swimming or surfing until the scab falls off. It is essential to protect the skin from sun damage following laser tattoo removal. The sun can cause blistering and prevent the tattoo site from healing completely. Cover the area with at least 30 SPF sunscreen or stronger during any sun exposure for about 3 months after the treatment. Rin Beauty Studio Jl. Mertanadi no. 92, Seminyak W: www.rinbeautystudio.com T: 0819-9904-5597
DOES IT HURT? Yes, it’s uncomfortable. Some describe removal as being as painful as having the tattoo. Others say it’s like ‘the snap of a thin rubber band’ on your skin multiple times. A local anesthetic will be applied to the area a half hour before treatment. Do not take aspirin or blood thinners prior to your treatment as you may bleed from the pin pricks and you may bruise. COST The cost depends on the tattoo size, the colours and quality of the inks. This can be estimated during your free consultation with your doctor. AFTER TREATMENT

BOOMER CORNER Mirror Mirror on The Wall
When you look in the mirror, is it a face that you know? Do you wonder what happened to the person when you were thirty something? You may feel like you’re still thirty something but looking in the mirror do you recognize that face? If you’re over forty it’s likely that some lines have appeared around your eyes, frown lines on your forehead and between your eyes and around your mouth. Oh god I’ve got wrinkles! How did that happen? Well my dear all those years of not taking the best care of your body like not eating good food, not exercising, going in the sun without sun protection, smoking, drinking, stress and not enough sleep have caught up with you. Your collagen levels have decreased making your skin sag and look tired.
Minimal invasive control Botox- is a well- known aid to eliminate wrinkles, mostly on the forehead, around the eyes and mouth. It paralyzes the nerves to prevent excess movement of the muscles. However, a person over fifty shouldn’t have more than 50 units injected or the opposite effect could result. Botox is a simple procedure of injecting the serum into the muscle. Its minimal pain and the full effects take three days lasting up to six months. Filler – is injected into deep wrinkles around the mouth, laugh lines, smoker’s upper lip and cheeks. A local anesthetic is applied to the skin to numb it before the injections. This is mildly painful. It adds plumpness to the deep lines in the face and will last up to a year. Filler is moderately expensive depending on how much is needed. V-Shape is a new treatment in Bali that enhances the V shape of the face on the lower face. It makes the face look thin with a balanced face line. It’s injected into the fatty tissue to dissolve the fat, which tightens up the muscles. This can be used on various places on the face and neck. The effects will take effect in a week and continue for six months, with new fat not returning. The treatment may be repeated two more times for permanent lasting results. It can be used on the body also. After V Shape is injected into the skin, the adipocyte cell wall will be destroyed by deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that helps the body in digestion and absorption of fat. The destruction of the adipocyte walls will cause an inflammatory cascade (destruction of fat cells) and decrease the size of the adipocytes themselves. This inflammatory cascade also makes the fibroblasts migrate and stimulate the production of more collagen. After going through the inflammatory cascade process, the skin will become firmer without excess fat. Maximum control – surgery If you’re serious about making a permanent improvement surgery is the only option. You can have a mini facelift, eye lift or full facelift. All of the surgeries are performed with a local anesthetic and sedative called “twilight”. General anesthetic is much more expensive with adverse side effects. Twilight is perfectly safe, keeping you in a dreamy state during the surgery without pain.
What can you do to change things? Depending on how much damage has already occurred to your face, your age and how brave you are will determine what remedies you can try to improve things. Minimal control Facial treatments – natural and laser. Natural facial treatments will soften your skin and plump it up but the results are only temporary. Laser – there’s a wide array of available laser treatments, which do help. These generally damage the collagen forcing it to repair itself, which will rejuvenate the skin. However, usually a few treatments are required for maximum results and only last for a year. Plus laser treatments are expensive.
longer lasting it will be. Dr. Surya creates a natural look, which will last up to 10 years for people 40-50 years and those older the effects will last 4-5 years. Then a second procedure will be required. He told me that the oldest person he gave a facelift to was 90 years old. She had undergone chemotherapy, which had destroyed her appearance. She wanted to look good for her funeral, which her family agreed she did.
An eye lift can be done on the upper or lower eyes or both. This is for people who have drooping eyelids or sagging skin under the eyes. Recovery time is approximately two weeks with minimal bruising and swelling. Many people develop heavy eyelids which makes your eyes look small. This can be caused by excess skin or fatty tissue. The results are excellent. A mini facelift can be done on the neck, double chin, jaw-line and cheek area. The skin is pulled back behind the ears and the double chin is cut into and reduced. Healing time takes two to four weeks with some bruising and swelling. You’ll go home wearing a bandage around your head and must return daily to have the bandages changed for the first few days. A full facelift will involve more bruising and swelling particularly around the eyes. Also the healing time will be longer, 2 to 4 weeks depending on your age. The younger you are when you have a facelift, the more effective and
Dr. Surya at Sara Klinik in Seminyak is a cosmetic surgeon who had 8 years training in Germany and Holland and is a reputable doctor with over twenty years’ experience. I have a few friends who have had surgery with him. Everybody is happy with the results. Dr. Surya assured me that seniors can get the same prices on treatments as locals, which is much cheaper than western countries. He can also provide you with Botox and fillers. If you’d like to gaze into your mirror and look more youthful, then go see Dr. Surya for a consultation. He’s very friendly with a gentle caring manner. GREENSPEAK Cinnamon Toast Back in the mists of time, cinnamon toast was my rare breakfast treat. Toasted white bread (it was almost always white in those days), buttered and sprinkled with a mixture of powdered cinnamon and white sugar was permitted once a week. I can still remember the crunch of sugar, the exotic tang of cinnamon evoking tropical forests, the distinct flavours and textures. The spice was also familiar for its starring role in cinnamon buns - plump, yeasty scrolls of fresh bread baked with layers of cinnamon and glazed with sugar frosting. Decades passed. I became aware that cinnamon was tree bark, and bought neat quills of it in glass jars to stir the Christmas egg nog. When I moved to Ubud I began to see cinnamon bark in the market, long untidy rolls of it up to 70 cm long. But it was only recently I learned the story of cinnamon.
these areas are remote from roads and it would be difficult to move the timber out. Tripper, a French family company with roots in Indonesia, is helping spice farmers in Indonesia by guaranteeing a market and teaching them to improve their product so they can obtain a better price. The Tripper brothers had worked in Indonesia and recognized the potential of the spice trade. They wanted to add value at origin, not just for end consumers but to benefit farmers and employees along the supply chain. The brothers established relationships with growers on several islands and built two processing sites, one in Jakarta dedicated to spice grinding and a Bali plant focused on liquid extracts.
No chemicals are used in the cultivation of cinnamon and the trees are replaced with young ones when they are cut. The mature plantations create a habitat for wildlife, but because cinnamon is often planted on top of hills where the land is cheaper, erosion occurs when the trees are cut down. One big tree might yield 50 or 60 kg of bark after 20 years. At the current farm gate price of Rp 45,000/kg, that is only Rp 2,700,000 return on a 20 year investment - about $US 10 a year. And the present price is high; five years ago it was only Rp 8,000/kg. Cinnamon is mostly grown by smallholder farmers and sold to consolidators because the growers have no direct market access, which means that the bulk of the profit is taken by middlemen. I was unable to discover whether the wood was sold as a byproduct; often
There are two types of cinnamon. Cinnamomum verum or true cinnamon is mostly produced in Sri Lanka. Cinnamomum cassia or Chinese cassia is more commonly available and about 75% of the world’s commercial cinnamon is grown in Indonesia and China. The bark of the more expensive true cinnamon is more delicate and its chemistry is different, which affects the medicinal properties. The distinct smell and flavor of cinnamon are due to the oily component which is very high in the compound cinnamaldehyde. Scientists believe this is responsible for most of cinnamon’s powerful effects on health and metabolism.
Most of Indonesia’s cinnamon comes from Sumatra, and most of that is taken from mature trees which are cut down to harvest the inner bark. Sumatran cinnamon trees are mostly found in the lush Kerincis Valley near the national park; there are thousands of hectares of them in the area. The smallholder farmers often plant cinnamon trees before they marry so the spice will help pay for their children’s education. They use a mixed cropping technique, planting chili and coffee saplings at the same time as cinnamon. The chili is harvested several times a year and the coffee begins to bear in three or four years. Coffee does well in the shade of the growing cinnamon trees which are thinned out in seven to ten years so the remainder have space to grow larger. The bark from the young trees is sold and this is the only profit until the mature trees are harvested in about 20 years when they are 15 metres tall.
Cinnamon has been a commercial commodity for about 4,000 years. It was used to embalm bodies in ancient Egypt, to flavour wine in ancient Rome and as an offering at the temple of Apollo. These days it’s used as a baking spice, in savoury Middle Eastern and North African dishes, to flavour everything from breakfast foods to toothpaste and teas.
Medical research shows that cinnamon is antioxident, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal, may reduce high cholesterol and blood pressure, lower blood sugar levels in Type 2 Diabetes and may inhibit neurodegenerative diseases. But do your research before you hit the cinnamon jar; the Cassia variety grown in Sumatra contains significant amounts of a compound called coumarin which may be harmful in large doses.
Tripper obtained ISO 22000 certification in 2001 and prioritised sustainable sourcing. In 2001 it received its first organic certification for cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and cloves. Processing and packaging is done in Jakaarta to ensure maximum quality. Tripper is now a thriving international spice business with 150 employees. It maintains long term relationships with traditional growers who were previously selling to consolidators. Tripper helps the growers achieve organic certification and Fair Trade status. The bark is cut and dried on site and then sent to the Tripper facility in Jakarta. Here the spice is either powdered, broken into pieces or cut into sticks before being shipped around the world. Aurele Mahieu, a French agricultural engineer working with Tripper, recently spent three months helping to train cinnamon farmers in Sumatra about organic production. “It was difficult to reach as many as we would have liked,” he told me. “There are 1000 members in the cinnamon co-op, and thousands of hectares under cinnamon cultivation. We were able to visit and train just 60 of them due to the distances and difficult terrain.” Previously Aurele had been on similar projects in Madagascar and Haiti.
I occasionally make cinnamon toast these days, with artisanal sourdough, buttered and sprinkled with Sumatran cinnamon mixed with powdered red palm sugar. This contemporary take on the old classic hasn’t lost its magic. I can still taste the exotic tropical forest, but now I can picture the tree, the harvest and the journey of cinnamon to my kitchen.

“How big is your Peka” Here is a wonderful titbit of information that will make you the hit at the annual dinner of the Denpasar Toastmakers Club. Did you know there is no such thing as “cold.” Cold is in fact a worldwide con created by exuberant salesmen who want to sell fridges to Eskimos. You see “cold” doesn’t exist, cold is in fact an “absence of heat”. To make heat you burn electricity, gas, coal, sweaty socks or any other energy to turn it into heat energy. In an electric fire or toaster all those little electrons dash round and get so excited that they generate lots of heat. 1 kilowatt of electricity will produce 1 kilowatt of heat (well nearly). BUT if they run around backwards they won’t produce cold. You can’t create cold. To make something cold we have to remove heat so we use a different process. If you want to know how go to: https://www.mrfixitbali.com/airconditioning/ac-how-it-works-135.html you will find the cooling cycle used in refrigerators and air conditioners. One of the great things about Bali is the weather, we enjoy a tropical climate but the sea breezes make it very liveable and keep the mozzies away. Many of us get used to the temperature and sleep in ventilated rooms but for others an air conditioner is a must, particularly on those days when it’s hotter than a vulture’s gonads. Air conditioning is a big subject but I will try and keep it simple. Firstly we need to understand a few things.
metric horses. One horse power is the equivalent of 746 watts while a PK is 736 watts or 0.736 kilowatts. The amount of cooling an air conditioner achieves is measured in BTUs (an archaic imperial measure known as a British Thermal Unit). To impress the Toastmakers Club you might like to tell them that a BTU is the amount of heat required to heat one pound of water through one degree Fahrenheit. During the height of the British Empire a fiendish plot was hatched whereby British Thermal Units were spread liberally all over the world to confuse scientists and engineers and give Britain a technological advantage. The plot was finally exposed and Europeans converted all their BTUs into Kilowatts at an exchange rate of 1 Kilowatt for 3,413 BTUs (a far better exchange rate than you’ll get for a British pound these days). How much cooling can be achieved by an air conditioner is determined by it’s power and it’s efficiency. This is measured as COP (Coefficient of Performance) which is the ratio of electricity input to cooling output. Back in the days of window mounted box air conditioners you could expect a COP of around 1.5 ( 1 kilowatt of electricity achieved 1.5 kilowatts of cooling). Nowadays with modern split air conditioners you can expect a COP of up to 4.5 (1 kilowatt of electricity will produce 4.5 kilowatts of cooling). “Just a minute! How can 1 kilowatt of electricity produce 4.5 kilowatts of cooling?“
“How big is your peka?” “I beg your pardon!”
You must remember that an air conditioner is not converting energy like an electric fire converts electrical energy into heat energy, we are simply moving heat energy from inside your house to outside.
In Indonesia the power of air conditioners is usually stated in pekas (what!). A peka in fact comes from the Dutch PK which is short for Paarden Kracht which translated means horse power (HP) - but not quite. A PK is in fact a metric horse power which is slightly smaller than a real horse power, this is probably because the Dutch had smaller
A modern air conditioner is in fact a heat pump, it pumps heat. It is also interesting that many air conditioners are “Reverse Cycle” they can (unlike the electric fire) run backwards pumping heat from outside your house to inside your house. A modern heat pump is four times as efficient at heating your house than an electric fire.
C/Bm/I-13 March 19
So you want to buy an air conditioner? Firstly you need to determine how much heat you need to remove from your room(s). A detailed calculation can be used that includes the floor area, the insulation of the walls and ceiling, the height of the room, the number of windows and doors, how much sun comes into the room, how many people are in the room (and how hot they are!) and the electrical appliances in the room that produce heat including light bulbs. From this the size in pekas can be determined. Oh my Dog, it’s all too much isn’t it? Never mind, for simplicity you can go to our online calculator here: https:// www.mrfixitbali.com/air-conditioning/air-conditionercalculator-12.html What make should you buy? Well basically you get what you pay for. Daikin are generally regarded as the better air conditioners. At the other end of the scale names like “Chou Well Hung”, “Poo” and “Dung” speak for themselves. As a final comment, the efficiency of your air conditioners will drop quite markedly as the filters get dirty. It is a good idea to get them cleaned and serviced regularly, perhaps every three months if you use them a lot. If you don’t understand a word of all this don’t worry about it, just have another glass of wine and put your feet up with a good book.

2 foreigners die in Bali boat accident Two foreigners - a Brazilian and South African-have died after their boat capsized in rough seas near Bali, the search-and-rescue agency said Monday. The small tourist vessel flipped near the treacherous Devil’s Tear cove on Nusa Lembongan, east of the Indonesian holiday island. The boat’s passengers, a 48-year-old Brazilian and a 43-year-old South African, were declared dead in hospital, the agency said. The boat’s 35-year-old captain survived with serious injuries, it added. Maritime accidents are not uncommon in Indonesia, a Southeast Asian archipelago of some 17,000 islands where safety standards are often lax. The head of the BMKG for Area III including Bali, Mohamad Taufik Gunawan, said the height of Bali’s “dry season” occurred in June-July-August and will come to an end when the rains start anytime before mid-October 2019. In fact, by mid-September intermittent rains have already started in some parts of Bali and expected to bill gradually until the peak of the rainy season in November and December. The reptile was seen slithering in the central part of the Indonesian holiday island last week. “When I got home from work, I parked my motorbike next to the snake,” said local resident Gusti Bagus Eka Budaya. “I looked more closely and it turned out to have two heads. I was shocked.” A video shows several children gathered around the tiny serpent - small enough to fit in the palm of a human hand as it slides about a banana leaf decorated with a traditional Balinese Hindu offering. Twitter user Lucas criticized Burger King’s intention to hire deaf employees at its branch in Jl. Sunset in Kuta, Bali to join their cashiers and order takers team, according to Bored Panda. “Should i respect burger king to do this or should i said is this a marketing strategic sh*t to get our empathy?” the Twitter user wrote. However, the company’s official Twitter account replied to Lucas’ post a day later to slam the user’s speculation. “It’s not a marketing strategic sh*t. It’s just an equal right for everyone to have a decent job thing. Thanks for the shout out tho!” the company said. Burger King installed specially-modified service counters in their Bali branch, advising customers that their staff is deaf. The sign also asks customers to point to a lighted signboard to select their orders. People under Lucas’ thread supported Burger King’s inclusive move by hiring deaf people and called out the user for being offensive. [nextshark.com September 11, 2019]
Central gov’t apologizes for damage caused by Benoa Bay reclamation, says project will be stopped An official from Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs apologized for the environmental damage caused by the reclamation of Benoa Bay and confirmed in a meeting with Bali Governor Wayan Koster that the controversial project will be put to a stop. “We apologize to everyone. The environmental damage, it was not something that anyone wished for. This fundamental, technical and management error will be corrected,” said Ridwan Djamaluddin, Deputy for Infrastructure at the ministry, as quoted by Bali Express. Last month, Koster issued a formal letter urging state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) III to stop the reclamation of Benoa Bay. The move came after a monitoring team found that 17 hectares of mangrove forest in the area were destroyed because of the project. The team, consisting of officials from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry as well as Bali’s Environmental Agency, also found that Pelindo’s reclamation project in Benoa Bay had violated a number of regulations, including the absence of revetment and silt screen, which was already laid out in an environmental impact assessment, locally known as AMDAL. The Benoa Bay reclamation project has been controversial since it was first proposed in 2012, sparking resistance movement organized by the Balinese People’s Forum to Reject Reclamation (ForBALI), a group of activists made up of artists, musicians, lawyers and other impassioned locals. Launched in 2013, the movement have consistently took to the streets and highlighted concerns that the reclamation project will have damaging impact to the environment. In response to this most recent development in the project, ForBALI coordinator
Wayan Gendo Suardana said that the government’s apology is not enough. “A mere apology will be bad precedent for environmental protection in Bali and in Indonesia,” Gendo said. He emphasized that Pelindo must be required to recover the area that has been impacted by the project in order to set an example for the future. The initial plan in Benoa Bay was to build an all-encompassing port facility, which included hotels, resorts and even a shopping arcade and golf course. Now, Ridwan said that those plans will be reviewed, though the main plan to have Benoa Port as a cruise ship harbor is still a go. “As we all know, the government is working hard to boost tourism, and Bali is Indonesia’s backbone, so we are planning to develop the Benoa Port to be the main harbor for cruise ships,” Ridwan said, as quoted by Kumparan. Airport authority alerted to lapse in quality control after bus catches fire at Ngurah Rai Airport last week An airport official said today the bus that caught on fire within Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport complex last week was allegedly caused by a short circuit in the engine, highlighting a lapse in quality control of the vehicles and their operations. “For the time being, we see there was a short circuit near the car’s battery,” Elfi Amir, who heads one of Bali’s airport authority offices, told Kumparan. No casualties were reported from the incident, which occurred on Friday afternoon at the ground support equipment (GSE) area of the airport. The fire was promptly extinguished by airport authorities soon after, and reportedly did not affect flight or terminal operations in Ngurah Rai.
the driver should also receive training on how to use the fire extinguishers, but in reality this doesn’t happen,” Elfi said. He reassured that his office is working to rectify these issues, and will continue to provide guidance and recommendations in order to ensure that operations at Ngurah Rai continue to meet established standards. [coconuts.co September 11, 2019]
As depicted in a number of posts shared on social media, however, the scene of the fire that day appeared to be quite dramatic, with black smoke rising from the affected passenger bus. Elfi said the incident showed a lapse in quality control, and added that drivers operating the passenger bus at the airport were not equipped to operate fire extinguishers in emergency situations. “There should be some kind of training, of which there hasn’t been any. B.J. Habibie dies at 83; ushered in democracy in Indonesia B. J. Habibie, who as president of Indonesia ushered in an era of democracy that ended the brutal and corrupt rule of Suharto, whose 32-year dictatorship was one of the most brutal and corrupt of the 20th century, died on Wednesday at a hospital in Jakarta. He was 83. His son Thareq Kemal Habibie said the cause was heart failure. “Please allow me on behalf the Indonesian people, and the government, to convey our deep sorrow,” Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, said. “We know Mr. Habibie as a world-class scientist, the father of technology in Indonesia and the third president of the Republic of Indonesia.” Mr. Habibie was working for the aerospace manufacturer Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm in Germany in 1974 when Suharto persuaded him to return to Indonesia and develop the country’s technology. He held several posts before Suharto named him to his cabinet as minister of research and technology in 1978. Twenty years later, he appointed him vice president and his successor.
“I was satisfied by my term in office,” he told reporters at the time. “I was given the opportunity to devote myself to this nation. I’m happy that democracy has started in Indonesia, and I hope this will continue whoever the new president is.” He was succeeded by Abdurrahman Wahid. In rolling back the Suharto dictatorship, Mr. Habibie freed the East Timor independence leader, Xanana Gusmao, who had served seven years in prison. Mr. Gusmao became East Timor’s first president in 2002 and later its prime minister for seven years. A video clip that circulated on the internet on Thursday showed Mr. Gusmao bidding an emotional farewell to Mr. Habibie at his hospital bedside. On Aug. 30, the 20th anniversary of the vote that granted it independence, East Timor named a bridge after Mr. Habibie in Dili, the capital.
At the time, Indonesia was struggling to recover from the Asian economic crisis, and Suharto’s government was facing mounting opposition. Suharto stepped down barely two months later, and Mr. Habibie became president. Though he was president for only 17 months, the shortest time in office of any Indonesian president, Mr. Habibie had a crucial role in laying the foundation for a democratic Indonesia. He called the first free elections in a generation, released political prisoners, protected freedom of the press and women’s rights, reduced the role of the military in politics, and moved to decentralize the government. He also paved the way for the province of East Timor, an island that was once a Portuguese colony, to become independent. TOKO BUKU Reviews of English language books on Indonesia
Journey Through Indonesia
By Tim Hannigan
Whether readers are planning a trip to this archipelagic nation or just fantasizing about one, Journey Through Indonesia adroitly combines the best features of both a picture book and a travel guide. With hundreds of vibrant full-colour photos, the large format book or eBook takes readers on a tour of the world’s most magnificent string of islands.
on Indonesia’s harsh political, social and environmental realities: i.e. the bombing of churches and other interfaith strife, Bali’s suffocating traffic congestion or the fact that Jakarta is sinking into the sea at the rate of two inches per year. What criticism he does level at Indonesia is couched in decorous and euphemistic terms. But of course pointing out the country’s shortcomings is not the author’s purpose.
This is a different kind of illustrated book whose captions and explanatory text are quite readable in and of themselves and not just serve to identify the images. The words are just as important as the photographs, unusual for such a lavishly illustrated book. The attractiveness of the page design also begs the question of why can’t all high school and university text books be as informative and all-encompassing as this “picture” book?
Besides including knowledgeable and wide-ranging descriptions of its arts, ceremonies, religious beliefs, archaeological sites, crafts and wildlife species, there is one page of travel tips in the backmatter and plenty of other information about low-key eco-tourism and backpacker destinations: the remote North Sumatran village of Tangkahan for its elephant-backed explorations of surrounding forests; the freshwater high mountain Lake Tawar, Aceh’s answer to Lake Toba; the isolated Meratus Mountains in the heart of Borneo for river-rafting; the idyllic Gili Islands off west Lombok where no motorized transport is allowed; Nembrala on the southern shore of Rote, a small island off West Timor; the Chinese outpost of Singkawang in West Kalimantan with its shop houses, temples and cafes wafting with the flavours of authentic Chinese cooking; the tiny Derawan Archipelago, a 20-minute speedboat ride off the north coast of East Kalimantan, 31 barely inhabited and scarcely visited islands of coral reefs, sharks and manta rays; surfer’s hangouts Batu Karas near Pangandaran in West Java and Maluk in far western Sumbawa, home of the incomparable wave Supersuck and the violent and dangerous Scar Reef.
Author Tim Hannigan is the most foremost travel writer and historian specializing on Indonesia working today, a premier interpreter of all things Indonesian. One earmark of his extensive travel in the islands is his frequent use of Indonesian words and phrases (with English translations) in his writing about the country. Whereas his book Geek in Indonesia is about the contemporary, quirky contradictions of Indonesia’s culture and society, his Journey through Indonesia takes a more traditional and idealized approach to country’s iconic attractions. The word “Journey” in the title gives a hint of the book’s ambitious scope that covers one end of the archipelago to the other. Part Two, the actual “journey” part of the book, comprises 80 pages, more than 62% of the total book, a condensed nitty gritty of what there is to see and do in this largest of island nations. Bali, everyone’s darling, gets an outsized 15 pages of treatment, consistent with its larger than life place in the world’s imagination. Granted, not the very latest travel information is provided, the province of a top-notch up-to-date guidebook. The 938 km trans-Java toll road inaugurated in January 2019 didn’t make the print run. The book also doesn’t shed much light
Since the physical book would be too unwieldy to carry while traveling, luckily there is an eBook edition with enhanced typesetting, page flip capabilities and searchable which obviates the need for an index (the physical book doesn’t have an index). The hundreds of meticulously detailed captions would’ve been much easier to read if the typeface was black instead of grey, a color probably chosen so as to not draw too much attention away from the 400 stunning images. Although the photos are all stock photos, they are high quality and well selected. One two-page map on the contents page shows the country’s most famous attractions, with national parks and World Heritage sites delineated by red dots. Small inset maps would have been helpful, such as one indicating Sumbawa’s position in the string of islands trailing off to the east of Bali. The instructions for climbing Lombok’s redoubtable Mt. Rinjani are so detailed that one yearns for a map in order to trace the way to the top. Journey Through Indonesia is not just a coffee table book but a complete visual and explanatory introduction to a vast watery realm with all the diversity of an entire continent. The well written and knowledgeable text give the images depth, making it the perfect introduction to this most colourful of countries, ideal for both Indonesia enthusiasts, armchair travelers and those actively planning explorations in Indonesia. GOJEK on the Move Building a Thriving Cottage Industry in Bali Since GOJEK first launched its mobile application in 2015 to rejuvenate the old ojek concept and introduced a new and improved motorcycle taxi service, the company did not sit still for long but dived headlong into expanding their platform and started rendering other valuable services to the public such as GO-CAR, GOFOOD, GO-SEND, GO-SHOP, GO-CLEAN, GOMASSAGE and many more. The overall success of the service range has made GOJEK a household word in Bali in record time. The company is currently enjoying a phenomenal growth rate and is doing it all from just one platform. Like many young start-ups GOJEK has a penchant for renovation and creativity. They keep coming up with new ideas and push the envelope on the type of services they can add to their fan belt of offerings. The sheer abundance of GOJEK choices is mind rattling. In Bali alone, GOJEK has over 8,000 registered motorcycle drivers, over 5,000 registered GO-CAR drivers, roughly 6,000 merchants participating with GOFOOD, and over 1,000 providers – affably called Talents - of GO-LIFE services which include GOMASSAGE, GO-GLAM, GO-CLEAN, GO-FIX and GOAUTO (car & motorbike washing service). GOJEK not only provides work for tens of thousands of people living in Bali, but is also helping small businesses grow and flourish.
skilled- to pair their talents, skills or services to the GOJEK platform. Home-based entrepreneurs can now offer and sell various products and services through the various GOJEK options. Talented cooks can prepare delicious dishes, box-lunches and take-out food at home, have it picked up and delivered with GO-FOOD. Skilled masseurs, masseuses, hairdressers and beauticians can sign up with GO-MASSAGE or GOGLAM and get called up by any customer in their area. Go-CLEAN is a house cleaning service that can be handled by any pair of willing and energetic hands. These cottage industries envisioned by Nadiem require no start-up capital, thereby allowing homemakers and private entrepreneurs to provide the services they know how to do without having to finance any part of their business. It allows them to practice their skills without having to set up shop somewhere else, in a public location. It allows them to be and remain independent. Sometimes all it takes is an opportunity, a little push for disadvantaged people to break out of the poverty cycle. A helping hand can make a huge difference for people with some skill, talent or motivation but no capital to start a little business of their own. With the GOJEK platform, there are a great number of possibilities. GOJEK’s objective is to offer diversified services to its customers on one hand, while providing gainful employment to independent people who would normally not get the chance, and to make an opportunity available to SMBs to increase and grow their business. The benefits that GOJEK drivers have experienced are easily summed up in some telling statistics: On average they experience a 44% increase in income compared to what they were making before partnering with GOJEK. 97% say they enjoy a more flexible work time, as they can freely set their own work schedule. 90% say they experience an increase in their quality of life. All of the drivers now have a personal savings account through GOJEK, giving them more access to financial services and products, as well as digital payments, e-wallets and small loans.
Not just an app – GOJEK has a definite business side. But where it shines is with its human approach to its workforce. The most admirable part of this enterprise is its adherence to its initial commitment to make a dent in Indonesia’s un- and underemployment problems. When GOJEK was created by Jakarta businessman Nadiem Makarim, it was his intention to use his business acumen to provide employment opportunities to regular ojek drivers who were essentially working on their own, without benefits and protection, and for very little pay in a climate that was very competitive. Taking it one step further, GOJEK began engaging SMBs (small to medium size businesses) to partner with them in the provision of a variety of services. GOJEK is also committed to building a thriving cottage industry by encouraging individuals -both the unskilled and semi-
in the markets they serve through smartly-applied technology. In all, GOJEK offers an opportunity for their drivers and talents to increase their income and ensure a better standard of living for them and their families. GOJEK’s customers are the silent, yet critical partners in this venture: Each time a customer orders a GOJEK service it is helping an individual, a family and a business in Bali. It’s a win-win situation for all.
The GOJEK ecosystem impacts on the growth of SMBs in a very positive way. GO-FOOD merchants report an increase in total sales and transactions of up to 345%, and an average decrease of 30% in their cost of operations due to the GO-FOOD delivery service. The majority of merchants have gone over to digital systems making their operations more streamlined and transparent. GOJEK’s website proudly announces it is a technology company with a social mission to improve the welfare and livelihoods of workers in various informal sectors in Indonesia. They not only want to improve social welfare by offering employment opportunities to various groups of people, they also want to create speed and efficiency
What’s next - GOJEK with its services firmly implanted in over 100 cities in Indonesia, is just not an Indonesiaonly phenomenon. The concept is very ingenious and suitable for consumption in other countries and to date, GOJEK has expanded into Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and soon into the Philippines. In addition the company plans to be more involved in social and environmental impact programs. In Bali this takes the form of a collaborative project with Kopernik and their Pulau Plastik campaign that aims to reduce plastic waste through education and awareness. GOJEK wants to be part of the plastic waste solution by providing waterproof delivery bags for GO-FOOD deliveries to avoid the single use carry bags that most restaurants use. GO-FOOD merchants will be offered eco-friendly packaging and given incentives to make the switch. In an environmentally themed project GOJEK Bali recently sponsored 2,000 mangrove plants to Radar Bali for their mangrove rejuvenation program. 50 GOJEK drivers participated in planting these seedlings in Benoa. Nadiem’s philosophy clearly tows the line of the ‘doing well by doing good’ concept. The GOJEK platform is a clear instance of that notion in successful action. It’s the ultimate in CSR as the altruistic totally drives the business side of it rather than being a sideline, a hobby or a lip-service effort on the part of the company. GOJEK is no longer a young start-up and the new kid on the emerging market block but an established venture that is expanding at a rapid clip. Whatever service is needed in this modern life, you can bet GOJEK will be part of it. www.go-jek.com
