SUICIDE.....The Big “WHY??” Just a few weeks ago, a family friend ended her own life. She was young, vivacious, attractive and very talented. She had some health problems which were manageable and she would probably have made a full recovery.

She had apparently spoken about suicide several times, although no one thought that she would actually do it. Suicide is more common that you might think. Most people that you speak to know someone who has lost a friend or a relative to suicide. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44, with around 3,000 people dying by suicide every year. That’s an average of eight people every day. In Indonesia, in particular Bali, suicide rates are relatively high, at approximately 150 deaths per year on the Island although these figures are likely drastically less than the true figures, due to under reporting and the fact that suicide is a taboo subject amongst the local people. For every suicide, there are tragic ripple effects for friends, families, colleagues and the broader community. “When people kill themselves, they think they’re ending the pain, but all they’re doing is passing it on to those they leave behind.” If someone you know seems to be struggling, reach out and connect with them. Showing that you care could make a huge difference in their life. If you are struggling yourself, you might feel better if you reach out for support, get treatment and start taking steps towards recovery.

Common warning signs Someone who is thinking about suicide will usually give some clues or signs to people around them, though these may be subtle. Suicide prevention starts with recognising the warning signs and taking them seriously Suicide warning signs • A sense of hopelessness or no hope for the future. • Isolation or feeling alone - “No one understands me”. • Aggressiveness and irritability - “Leave me alone”. • Possessing lethal means - medication, weapons. • Negative view of self - “I am worthless”. • Drastic changes in mood and behaviour. • Frequently talking about death - “If I died would you miss me?”. • Self-harming behaviours like cutting. • Engaging in ‘risky’ behaviours - “I’ll try anything, I’m not afraid to die”. • Making funeral arrangements. • Giving things away (clothes, expensive gifts) - “When I am gone, I want you to have this”. • Substance abuse. • Feeling like a burden to others - “You would be better off without me”. • Making suicide threats - “Sometimes I feel like I just want to die”. Responding to warning signs Fortunately most threats of suicide are not genuine. It is usually a desperate cry for help. However, no suicide threat should be taken lightly. Suicidal intent can be very subtle, and even those whom you may think have every reason to live, can be very serious about taking their own life. Who would have thought that a man like Robin Williams would even dream of it? Talking to someone about suicidal thoughts can be challenging but if you are unsure whether someone is suicidal, the best way to find out is to ask. ARE YOU SUICIDAL? Talking to someone about your suicidal feelings Having suicidal thoughts can be scary. You may have never had them before, or perhaps the thoughts have been there for a while and you are not sure what to do. You may be ashamed to talk about it or worry that people will judge you or not take you seriously and just tell you to “Get over it”.

Let someone know Share how you feel with someone you trust and feel comfortable with, a family member, teacher, doctor or other health professional. Try and think about it as any other conversation. You can describe what has happened, how you feel and what help you need. It’s best to be direct so that they understand how you feel. Be prepared for their reaction. Often people who learn that someone is suicidal can be quite confused and emotional at first. Just keep talking and together you can find a way through it. Ask your friends/ family member to help you find support in person, online, over the phone. Understand that others do care. It is important to have support from your friends but if you tell them about your suicidal thoughts you cannot expect them to keep it a secret. They want to be able to help you stay safe and that usually means calling in extra help. There are few if any support centres for expatriates suffering from mental health issues in Indonesia or Bali. While there are some excellent counsellor now resident on the Island, their services are reasonably expensive. Help lines overseas are plentiful, so sourcing support on line from your country of origin may be the best option for some people. Support for local people can be sourced at the SURYANI Institute http://www.suryani-institute.com/ or the department of Mental Health at Sanglah Hospital.

Tales of Hoffnung

International Medical / Life Insurance

Computer woes & Municipal Concern

Group and Individual Scheme

Who among us has not experienced the stress of building a house, buying or repairing a used car, getting the air conditioning, plumbing or lighting fixed? It’s a problem anywhere, but Bali brings its own particular genius to the table. There are usually lots of people offering help. Problem is knowing who among them is actually capable of performing the task and at a fair price. All too often it’s a decision that can lead to a botched job, long faces and arguments over money. To remedy this all we can do is ask around for a steer and trust to luck. This can be a frustrating and costly experience. Bitter experience shows that good initial research can save a bucket of tears down the pike.

In theory, when it comes to established professions, accountancy, the law and medicine say, you are protected by professional bodies devised to regulate these callings in terms of qualification and ethics. On rare occasions a really bad egg can even be defrocked. I don’t feel we can say the same when it comes to certain more modern callings. I think here of financial advisers and in particular, computer consultants. Of course, let me hasten to add, there are some very able and qualified practitioners in both fields. There also are many who are neither. When it comes to seeking computer advice in Bali, over the past 20 years or so I’ve met some real treasures, others who managed an acceptable result, and more than my fair share of horror shows. It makes sense then, for us to share our experiences as widely as possible to encourage the good and avoid the bad. One thing to know for sure, when you find a good’un they’re worth their weight in gold.

Tales of Hoffnung Back in the 1950s there was a well-regarded British musicologist, cartoonist and humorist called Gerard Hoffnung. Born into a wealthy German-Jewish banking family he came to Britain in the 1930s to escape Nazi persecution. Hoffnung’s main claim to fame was a humorous monologue which he delivered in fruity oratorical and donnish tones to the Oxford Union called “The Bricklayer”. This was the saga of an inept bricklayer engaged in a futile attempt to build the walls of a house. It wasn’t intrinsically funny but the timing and delivery made it hilarious. I mention this as a mnemonic device and as an illustration of the perils we can face when we seek advice in the wrong quarter. For my wife and I, 2017 seems to be a year when Mars is in permanent retrograde and Bali’s tech gremlins hold sway over the Earth. Granted we may not be as knowledgeable or as thorough as we might be in our techno housekeeping but we do our best to keep up. Despite this, in the last eight weeks we have been pretty much stripped of all our computer and communication support. A rather threatening experience, as those of you who have undergone anything similar will know. Between us we have a MacBook Pro, a rather vintage desktop computer, and two PC laptops, an Acer and a Vaio. In the stress of a hospital visit I left my antique Nokia handphone in a Grab taxi and my wife’s two much more advanced contemporary mobile ‘phones have been acting up strangely. Grab, please note, were no help at all in recovering my Nokia. The driver did not pick-up and Grab’s “customer service” was a bad joke. After an initial bum steer with the Mac, which cost me a several million Rp., I was eventually correctly advised. The news was not good. The Macbook was kaput and all that could be done was to transfer my data to a new hard drive pending purchase of a new Mac. Conclusion: some six million and three months later to find out I need to buy a new Macbook cost c. Rp15.5m if I am to rejoin the working world.

Such difficulties are by no means confined to the house, indeed when it comes to the services of professional consultants the need for effective cost-efficient advice can be critical. A bad choice here can hurt even more.

On the PC front the news was worse as the saga continues. We consulted an individual, who has been around for quite some years and who initially established a good reputation in the expat community. After cursory enquiry we thought we’d found our man. After an apparently successful transfer of the desktop from office to house (it too has now given up the ghost and won’t start) we gave him the two PC laptops to fix. Big mistake. Six weeks or so later we now have our laptops back, if anything less functional than when we started. The whole episode was as unpleasant as it was fruitless. The technicians, when we saw them, seemed helpful but their boss was arrogant and defensive throughout. On enquiry we received only partial and conflicting information and could not establish the whereabouts of our laptops as the bill continued to mount. After a month of this we had to call it quits and took back the two inoperative machines.

My feeling is this is an old story: a once effective individual starts by doing a good job and prospers but as the business makes more money he expands beyond his managerial competence; instead of learning how to cope, takes on too much work and the service inevitably goes downhill. Now we will have to start anew, beginning with a visit to the Sony service people, where perhaps we should have started in the first place. What’s the buzz about the Sony’s service, I wonder?

C/He/G-15 Feb. 17

Oh! What a Dump! I was distressed to read of the deaths in Sri Lanka of 29 villagers whose homes abutted a large rubbish tip that fell upon them and their homes following heavy rains. Every time I travel West from Sanur I look over the mangroves to the ominous heap that is the Suwung Tip, now extending three-storey high a good part of the distance between Sanur and the Benoa causeway. Back in 2007 I covered the UN Conference on Climate Change that took place in Bali. The significance of that meeting was that for the first time it was generally accepted that we were in real trouble, the problem was us, and that something had to be done. Generally perhaps, but not by all. The Secretary General of the Conference was reduced to tears by the recalcitrance of the US, China, the Saudis, the Indians and, surprising to some… the Canadians. There was much talk then of plans to make Suwung not only ecologicaly sustainable, but actually a money-maker producing energy for the community. That good thought vanished long ago in a haze of sleaze and ineptitude, as much the fault of the UN agency concerned as any local or international shortcomings. Fortunately, I don’t believe there are any villages nestling in the Suwung Tip’s shadow and given that it is strategically placed in the middle of a “protected” mangrove forest. Still, doubtless Bali has other lesser tips and I do hope that nobody dwells in the shadow of them.

This month, Body Temple Bali are offering a whole host of specials with mums in mind and with two stunning spa locations at Canggu Club and adjacent to Finns Beach Club, there’s plenty of opportunity to pamper your mama more than just once! As mums (and dads), we tend to do a lot of running around for our kids and on a daily basis will don numerous different hats from cook to cleaner, tutor to taxi driver, nursemaid to nurturer, police to pamperer and many more to mention. It’s part of the job description of ‘parent’ apparently and we dutifully carry out our role, but it’s nice to be on the receiving end at times too! All that running around can take its toll and Thalgo has just the solution for tired bodies with its Frigi Body Wrap. Strange

sort of name and if you are thinking it might be cool, you’re spot on! It’s a cryotherapy body wrap containing their proven and effective algae complex and enriched with camphor and menthol for that cooling effect. Designed to relieve fatigue and discomfort in the legs and eliminate fluid retention from the lower body, this wrap focuses on the abdomen and thighs, activating surface circulation to increase tone and elasticity and minimise the look of cellulite. Sign me up…! It’s a forty five minute treatment so it won’t impact on your busy day and now’s the time to try it with a saving of Rp125,000 in May. Now you’ve had some relief for your pins, complete your new polished appearance and add glamorous tips and toes with a Shellac mani/ pedi combo. A healthier alternative to acrylic, Shellac is a hardwearing long lasting polish that protects your nails and prevents cracking, flaking and splitting. If you’ve never used Shellac before, make it happen at Body Temple this month as you’ll save a whopping Rp250,000, leaving you with even more spare cash to splash.

Sometimes all it takes is a little gift to make that important ibu in our lives feel appreciated and special. Make it all about ya mum in May and take the time to tell her just how much she means to you with a gift of luxury from Body Temple Spa. Choose from two convenient Canggu locations; on the lower level at Canggu Club or surf side adjacent to Finns Beach Club on Berawa Beach. Ditch the usual gifts of choccies or candies this Mother’s Day, with an extra 20% off for Canggu Club Gold and Platinum members in addition to these mad May prices, the deal’s already sweet! Three Canggu Tweens Take to Tennis for Charity Since October 2010 Indonesia’s renowned and respected Non Profit Organisation, Solemen has made good on their pledge to remain a beacon of hope for Bali’s poor, unwell and disadvantaged. Over the past six years, Robert Epstone’s Solemen team have worked tirelessly to raise community awareness and funds to help alleviate suffering and provide assistance for those who are unable to help themselves. Unfortunately, there is an ever increasing number of people who require their help and in just the last year alone Solemen’s case load has risen from around 500 to over 900, creating a severe strain on the humanitarian organisation’s resources. When asked by his mum to come up with an idea to raise money for charity, eleven year old Oliver Jonsson chose to focus his efforts on one of his passions - tennis! Together with squad pals Agus Wibawa and Jackson Zeus Penny, the young men hatched a plan to play tennis for twelve hours straight, raising money through their energetic efforts by inviting sponsorship and donations via a crowdfunding page on JustGiving. In an effort to ease some of the financial pressure and raise funds to assist Solemen in their quest to help others, these enterprising young Canggu fellows decided to put their love for tennis to good use.

As the plan evolved, the boys discussed how they could expand their idea even further and decided on spreading the word to invite others to come along, donate and play with them on the day! But it wasn’t just their peers who got in on the act…. On Sunday April 9th at 8am, the boys laced up their runners and with racquets in hand, made their way onto the court at the Canggu Club Tennis Centre and began their quest to play for twelve hours straight! There was a fabulous response with many supporters, young and old dropping in throughout the course of the day. Some remained on the sidelines and cheered them along while others ‘paid to play’. Anyone who donated could opt for some court time with the boys and participants were offered thirty minutes of tennis time for Rp 200K (many donating more) with an option to play singles or doubles, giving at least one of these young men the chance to take a quick break while their buddy was slogging it out on the court! Proud mums and number one supporters Louise, Rachel and April assisted the boys throughout the day, managing court side donations which alone totalled around Rp 7 million. Despite an original target of US$1000, online donations along with cash raised on the court resulted in more than triple their

target, totalling over Rp38,000,000 to date! Tired and somewhat foot sore by 8pm, there was no way a little discomfort could wipe the grins from these boys’ faces as the true extent of funds they had raised came to light. An inspiration to many of us four times their age, Oliver, Agus and Jackson are local legends and proof that you don’t need to be big to be the difference. Sincere thanks must go to all who donated and a hearty congratulations to these boys on their fabulous initiative and job very well done! sun and enables them to enjoy themselves too.

The Wonder Women of Indonesia At first the novel ready-to-use water purifiers, portable solar lights and efficient low-tech stoves were met with rejection after rejection in the remote dirt poor communities of eastern Indonesia. People refused to drink unboiled water or take the risk of their houses burning down. Heads of households had already been burnt by cheap Chinese solar lamps from itinerant Makassarese traders that had malfunctioned after only a few weeks. But all that soon changed. You may not think that simple technologies would make that much of a difference, but there was a time not so long ago when - after the sun set and the smoky kitchen fires died down – that villages across the whole of eastern Indonesia would be plunged into darkness with just a dozen or so pinpoints of kerosene lamps flickering in the windows along hushed pitch black streets. Households had to endure brownouts and spend dearly on candles and kerosene for oil lamps. The gradual introduction of just a few excellent i n n o v a t i v e technologies has made a dramatic and tangible improvement in p e o p l e ’s l i v e s . Now after dark you’ll see people everywhere socializing, children studying, women weaving, goods being prepared for market and village meetings extending later into the evenings all under the bright lights of solar lamps provided by the “Wonder Women” initiative that empowers poor women to become social entrepreneurs. The program is the brainchild of Kopernik, an Ubud-based non-profit foundation, which distributes practical, intermediate and environmentally-friendly technology. People learn about Wonder Women through leaflets provided in the villages as well as marketing events in peoples’ homes sponsored by more than 400 small traders who earn a 10% commission by Kopernik on all sales. At these impromptu gatherings, local women display the devices to their neighbors. These labor saving tools are not giveaways. A critical component of Kopernik’s philosophy is not to create dependency. From experience, the organization has learned that it’s more of an equal partnership if end users pay for the technologies. People take better care of things that they have bought more than things they have been given. Paying for the relatively high price of lamps, from Rp100,000 to Rp1.5 million, is made easier by making 2-3 monthly installments or by organizing an arisan group (rotating monthly lottery) of up to 30 housewives where each member contributes Rp50,000. The new initiatives help local economies by opening up microentrepreneurship opportunities for women. Since women manage a much larger portion of the family’s disposable income than men on education, nutrition, health care and sanitation – things that directly benefit families – they hold the key to sustainable development throughout Indonesia. Thus the program, dubbed “Ibu Inspirasi” in Indonesian, has the aim of boosting the income of families in Tuban and Bojonegoro in East Java and in outlying areas of Nusatenggara. Since its inception, it has distributed 24,000 clean energy products, reaching 110,000 people and reducing CO2 emissions by an estimated 15,000 tons. Ina Saptiono, Kopernik’s communications officer in charge of outreach, is one of the key people responsible for getting the word out about the program. Brimming with energy and enthusiasm, when this 24-year-old is not wall climbing – her current hobby – she is blogging about the program or out in the field visiting schools or reaching out to some of Indonesia’s poorest villages. Born and raised in Jakarta, Ina was exposed to social disparities early on. At a young age she helped her mother, a social activist, with charity work and volunteered to tutor math, English and science to underprivileged children in her neighborhood during her high school years

2007 - 2010. Education has always been Ina’s main focus, believing that learning can truly change the world. In Jakarta’s slum areas she helped street children get into school often against their parents’ wishes who insisted that they should work. After earning a Bachelor’s in Media and Entertainment at Breda University in The Netherlands and completing internships in Berlin and Amsterdam, Ina added to her experience in the development sector by accepting a job offer from Kopernik in early 2016 to manage the Indonesian Women for Energy public advocacy campaign, the first time she ran a social media led campaign. She knew that Kopernik was dedicated to making changes in the world - even small ones. Her new responsibilities were a perfect fit for her career. When Kopernik launched the Wonder Women program in 2011, she found that the most effective way to grab attention to the issues was to involve the women themselves in the program where they could get a deeper understanding of the problems and what the program is trying to accomplish. Judging from the rush of applications they received, the focus on women was a great success. She learned that if deployed properly, digital media can be an immense help in spreading important messages that result in meaningful changes in the real world. The Last Mile of Civilization The Ibu Inspirasi entrepreneurial empowerment program currently operates in Aceh in far north Sumatra, in Tuban and Bojonegoro in East Java and in West and East Nusa Tenggara provinces. Except for Papua, East Nusa Tenggara has the lowest access to electricity of any province in Indonesia with about half its residences living without power. The impoverished region also has extremely limited access to clean water. T h e N a z a v a Wa t e r Filter, made in Bandung, West Java is one of the program’s life-savers, the simplest and most practical filtration system to install in remote areas because of its ease of use and affordability. Depending on size and model, the filter cost Rp190,000 to Rp580,000 and the replacement filters are Rp95,000. With the filter’s introduction, families and schools no longer need to boil water or buy plastic bottles, saving precious money on kerosene and LPG gas. The filter consists of two plastic water containers on top of each other with ceramic filtering candles fitted into the top container. Impregnated with silver and activated carbon, the candles filter out dirt, dust and harmful microbes, kill bacteria and remove any color and odor. All you have to do is fill the top container with water. Gravity then pushes the water through the filters into the bottom bucket. The water is then clean and safe for consumption. Now 500 households use this filter in East Flores regency alone and they are in use in 6,700 households in the whole of Nusatenggara. Another of the program’s tech heroes is the remarkable UB Biomass Cookstove made in Malang, East Java. Costing around Rp300,000, the use of these sturdy aluminum stoves has greatly expanded to about 600 families in East Flores Regency (2300 in all of Nusatenggara) through the efforts of Wonder Women. Though similar in appearance to kerosene stoves, the biomass stove employs a process called gasification and fumes combustion in which a solid biomass such as firewood or natural food waste like corn husks is packed tightly into the combustion tube at the top of the stove. You then light the fuel and use a toggle at the bottom to regulate how much air is allowed into the stove in order to control the heat. Using dry fuel and leaving as little airspace between the stove’s components produces a clean fire without much smoke. This efficient stove replaces the polluting woodburning variety which, according to research in 2014 by the World Bank, has contributed to the early deaths of an estimated 165,000 people annually in Indonesia. Unaware of its harmful effects, a startling 100 million people in the country still use traditional brick stoves that burn kerosene or firewood.

It doesn’t stop with providing money, time and labor saving devices but expanding networks for the future. The Wonder Women are always looking for partnerships with NGOs, social enterprises and government institutions to meet the changing needs of women in the communities they serve. For instance, they recently established a partnership with TNP2K (National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction) to distribute solar home systems that benefit 3 villages of 230 households in Eastern Indonesia. One such recipient is Nubahaeraka (pop. 288) deep in the hills of Lembata Regency, a village renowned for its whale hunts in open boats. Located at 1000 m above sea level at the end of a bumpy road 37 km (3.5 hours) from the regency capital of Lewoleba, the community has heretofore relied upon diesel generators or the government-owned electric company PLN for power. Villagers had previously paid Rp50,000 per month for on again, off again service from 6 pm to 9 pm. Now portable solar lamps provide free illumination for the night-time delivery of babies by midwives and increased home industry production of handwoven ikat textiles. After a day’s charge in the sun, a lamp will burn all night long. Nazava water filters in turn eliminate the need to travel two kilometers downhill to the nearest fresh water source. The villages of the Larantuka District in East Flores is another community where the efforts of Wonder Women have positively improved the lives of a vulnerable and disadvantaged group living in the far reaches of the archipelago. Here solar lamps have cut electricity costs by half and water filters obviate the need to boil well water. The gradual adoption of biomass stoves has also made an impact in an area where local housewives reject LPG gas stoves because of the fear of explosions. Fires started by the malfunction of the small, government-issued green gas tanks, called locally “melon bombs,” have been known to burn down houses. Kerosene cook stoves emit less smoke but both the stove (Rp400,000) and the fuel (Rp8,000/litre) are expensive. This means that old fashioned wood stoves are still widely used, billowing smoke and blackening kitchens. In the new biomass stoves, dried candlenut shells – a byproduct of a major trade commodity in candlenuts - are used for fuel. Besides the Wonder Women initiative, Kopernik has also launched various technology distribution projects in Bali in conjunction with local partners. Though Bali is more developed than the country’s eastern provinces, there are still areas that are economically backward and can benefit tremendously from the utilitarian, efficient and affordable technologies that Kopernik distributes. The promising new solutions have helped poor mountain communities in Karangasem, East Bali, which rely on generators for electricity and where living conditions are still way below standard. In Gianyar, the Drink Up Payangan Project has the twin goals of providing safe drinking water and reducing plastic waste. After it was discovered that students in Payangan spent a large part of their small daily allowance on bottled water (Rp1,000-Rp2,000/600 ml bottle), the project provided 15 Nazava Bening XL Water Filters for 15 schools. More recently, the Drink Up Karangasem helps any person with a disability who have been identified through a local partner, Puspadi Bali. Information about the Ibu Inspirasi’s activities can be found on the Kopernik website (www.kopernik.info) and social media channels Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). Fundamentals for Growing Grass ‘Dear Garden Doctor, We built our house 18 months ago and I’m only just getting my lawn looking decent as the builders took away most of my top soil and grass that was left after excavating my block. I’ve been buying compost soil and transplanting runners and finally it’s getting there but I’m wondering if you have any tips on aeration or basic advice on how to grow a beautiful lush green lawn to make the neighbours jealous? Rafael, Sanur’ Growing a beautiful lawn is a pleasing way to cover a large unused area of the garden. A lawn can be easy to care for, once it is established. Initially when transplanting sod or runners you will need to make sure it is well watered for at least a month. People have been known to plant a new lawn and then immediately go overseas on holidays for two weeks and come back to a dry golden lawn resembling hay, because they forgot to set the timer or ask the neighbours to water it! The best tip is to have a well prepared soil laid before the lawn is planted, otherwise you may find it drowning in the wet season. You really can’t afford not to do it. Every solid project requires a good foundation. The foundation for a good lawn is the soil in which it grows. The builders and excavators often leave you with compacted soil, otherwise no good soil at all after construction. What’s even better is that once you begin to dig around you start to lift up all sorts of treasures that have been conveniently left behind, otherwise known as construction rubble! One of my favourite finds was sheets of thick window panes, broken and jagged buried in shallow dirt just metres from the front door. As I scratched the surface, what appeared to be a few panes of glass soon became many. As I kept digging I opened up a Pandora’s box, of all sorts of building rubble, things such as planks of wood complete with rusty nails extruding…obviously some old formwork! There were cement buckets, paint brushes, broken bottles, food wrappers, PVC pipes, teh botol, nails, bricks and large rocks amongst other things! Once it was all out I found that I had probably lost 1/3 of my total soil volume. This actually worked out well because from there I could then incorporate compost with the existing dirt and build the soil back up to the desired level. So, the construction rubble ended up a good thing in the end! A reminder - always approach a construction site soil with suspicion, caution and a thick pair of gloves and sturdy boots

that will withstand glass, nails and splinters! Where to Start? Start by choosing a grass that is suitable for the climate and conditions. The best grass types to grow in Bali are known as warm season grasses, such as couch, kikuyu, and buffalo grass. Buffalo grass is a running grass that forms a dense, coarse-textured lawn that is hard wearing but slow growing. It is grown from turf or runners and will tolerate shade better than others. Most grass types will require at least a few hours of sun per day. To buy rolls of sod ask at your local nursery or have a look around at the nursery district

of Sanur, there are many dedicated turf sellers out that way. Measure your yard to work out how many square metres you will require. You can easily order a truck of soil and the turf in the morning and have it delivered that same afternoon. You can pay to have the soil levelled and the grass installed otherwise just grab a fork, mattock, rake and shovel and do it yourself! When is the best time to water? One of the most misunderstood factors of lawn maintenance. The main aim of watering your lawn is to replace the moisture that is being lost due to evaporation. Any more or any less will cause the lawn to suffer in times of stress. The time of day makes a difference. Water your lawn when the least amount of moisture will be lost to evaporation. Water early in the morning or in the evening if possible. Avoid watering during midday and afternoon, when the heat is highest. Your lawn won’t get the full benefit as moisture will be lost to evaporation. How often should you water your lawn? Lawns are

C/Ns/G-6 July 16

sometimes killed by over enthusiastic watering. Frequent over-watering causes the grass to send roots up to the surface looking for water, where they will suffer during extreme weather. Initially you may need to water your lawn a few times a week in the first month as the runners establish, then gradually taper back to once a week. Water heavily and less often. This will encourage deeper rooting of the grass, it will adapt to become more vigorous and will better be able to withstand dry spells. The soil needs to have periods of dry so that the roots will search deeper within it, becoming well rooted in the process. Aeration An aerated soil is good for drainage, root development, attracts worms and facilitates the absorption of atmospheric nitrogen into the soil. If the soil is constantly moist or waterlogged the grass could rot or you could even end up with fungus and mildew getting into your lawn. A waterlogged soil is a compacted soil, it won’t allow water to drain freely. An easy way to aerate a moderately compacted soil or lawn is to use a garden fork. Drive the fork into the ground wiggle it about, then sprinkle compost around the holes and then lightly water in. You could use a core aerator - a specialised tool that will allow you to remove small plugs of soil. There are also ‘aerating’ boots with large spikes to walk across the grass if you can find them, probably online. If you are on an old construction site you will probably have to import some soil and remove some junk. Finally, once it is all growing and well established take care with the mower. Never remove more than one-third of the green leaf blade at any one cutting. This can weaken the grass and cause it to dry out easily on hot days. Also consider trying out an electric mower for your lawn, that way you can avoid all the mess and hassle of dealing with petrol tins and oils. Hopefully your neighbours will be jealous sooner than you think!

22 Th is so simple This ye yet delightfully mo moorish. As a plu it happens plus, to be glutin-free and full of pr protein since it’ made from it’s ch chickpea flour, also called ‘b ‘besan’. It’s divine with gorgonzola lti into i t it’ i f melting it’s h hott crispy surface or with a drizzle of reduced balsamic vinegar. Sometimes I lay anchovies on the half-baked surface before returning it to the oven. You can easily double the recipe and bake it in a rimmed cookie sheet. The flour and water mixture needs to be started three hours before you plan to bake it, but you can also do that the night before.

Italian Chickpea Flat Bread with Olives, Capers, and Tomatoes Serves 4 Ingredients: - 1 1/4 cups chickpea flour also called ‘besan’ in the Indian food section of the market - 1 3/4 cups fresh cold water - 1/2 tsp. salt - 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper - 1/8 tsp. ground cayenne - 1 1/2 Tbl. extra virgin olive oil (if you have rosemary oil use that for extra flavor -here’s the recipe: http:// baliadvertiser.biz/rosemary-oil/) - 1/4 cup Kalamata olives, slivered - 1/4 cup sun dried tomatoes, slivered - 2 Tbl. capers - 1/4 cup basil leaves, torn by hand - 1/4 cup Italian parsley, coarsely chopped - 1 tsp. olive oil or rosemary oil Optional: 8-10 oil-packed anchovy fillets, cut in thirds Optional: 1/2 cup gorgonzola cheese crumbled Optional: 2 Tbl. reduced balsamic vinegar Directions: This must be started at least 3 hours before you want to bake it. Put the chickpea flour into a large bowl. Stir it with a whisk or fork to break up any lumps. Then add the water a little at a time while stirring with a whisk. When all the water is added, whisk it a bit longer to make sure all the lumps are gone. Add the salt pepper and cayenne, give it a stir and cover the bowl, letting it stand for 3 hours or longer. When you are close to baking time preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. The oven must be hot when you put the flat bread in to bake. Using a slotted spoon skim off any froth that has formed and discard. Pour the oil into an 18 cm x 30 cm glass or metal baking pan. If you double the recipe use one that is 26 cm x 39 cm x 2 cm. Smear the oil all around and up the sides of the pan. Add the olives, tomatoes, capers, basil, parsley and oil to the batter and stir well. Pour this into the oiled pan and carefully slide into the preheated oven. It’s quite liquid so be careful not to spill it while sliding it in. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until it’s golden brown on the top and the sides pull away from the pan. If the bottom is browning too fast reduce the heat to 350 half way through. If you want to use the anchovies, lay those on the surface after it is half baked and continue baking. Remove from the oven and let it sit 5- 10 minutes before cutting and serving. If you want to use the gorgonzola cheese now is the time to sprinkle it on top. If you use the reduced balsamic, drizzle it on the individual pieces after it’s been cut. Note: you can also bake this without the olives, tomatoes, and capers for a simpler flat bread. Leftovers reheat well enclosed in aluminum foil.

The Frugal Balinist *Bright Gas. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) are fossil derived fuels used in cooking, heating water and lighting a gas lantern. Even though “Bright Gas” LNG tanks are not subsidized by the government, they are still a less expensive source of fuel than your standard LPG tanks. Bright Gas LNG tanks hold gas that is cleaner and longer lasting and are safer in preventing leaks from the cylinder valve (regulator tabung gas); the purity of the gas contents are guaranteed; stickers on the tank give instructions on how to use the cylinders; they are accompanied by a counterfeit proof hologram. Cost for a 5,5 kg “Bright Gas” tank is Rp320,000 (refill Rp60,000) and Rp450,000 for a 12 kg (refill Rp140,00). Standard 2,5 kg LPG tanks are Rp160,00 (refill Rp16,000) while 12 kg LPG tanks cost Rp450,000 (refill Rp128,000). note: Always buy and refill tanks at official LPG agents or outlets which are cheaper than toko, gas station, Indomart and other places that sell them.

*Ideal stove for outdoor kitchen. These energy efficient stoves available on Bali are made of specially treated hardened fire resistant coal and are well designed for small cooking fires in your back yard. Confining the fire and its convective heated air to the area under the pot results in increased efficiency compared to your typical Rinnai burners. The flames are directed upwards in what could be described as a forced jet, producing a dome-like ring of fire all around the base of the cooking pot, wok or pan. In the small enclosed area of the fire, the wood, bamboo or agricultural waste such as corn stalks used in the stove lights quickly and becomes very hot very fast. Sticks of wood or bamboo protrude out the front which you push in as they are consumed by fire. Definitely worth the low local price of around Rp75,000 or bule price of Rp100,000. *Cheapest travel. The cheapest time to fly to Bali is February and November as holidays around the world usually do not fall during those months. Also you avoid Australian schoolies in December and July and August when schools are out in Indonesia and in other many other countries. *Since Tiger, Virgin and Air Asia pulled the plug on Australia, only Jetstar and Garuda fly out of Melbourne at astronomical rates of A$1559 (Jetstar) in high season and A$500-A$600 return in low season. * Accommodation rates and airline fares from Indonesia to foreign destinations are often more completive pricewise than domestic tourist destinations. For example, Smailing Tours and Travel Service charges only Rp1.7 juta for tickets from Jakarta to Hong Kong in June; nine-night trips to Japan can be as low as Rp3.2 juta and promotional three-day, two-night tours of Bangkok can cost only Rp700,000; the same length trip to Morotai in North Maluku can cost Rp3,7 million. * With hotel occupancies nowadays averaging only 53%, many 4-5 star hotels are fantastic bargains, charging as little as Rp250,000 for double rooms including complete breakfast for two.

*Food alternatives. For gluten/wheat free bread, get Bali Buda’s Sunshine Loaf, Red Rice Bread & Cornbread. *Beef (daging sapi) and goat (daging kambing) sold in traditional markets comes the closest to organic animal protein that you can get on Bali; it is the healthiest, cleanest and most delicious because Bali cattle are not fed chemical-laced livestock feed (carun) that is typically fed to chickens and other livestock.

An outbreak on Bali last month of Streptococcus suis, a viral encephalic infection, necessitates ordering and cooking pork well done. *The sudden spike in cases of demam berdarah (hemorrhagic fever) that often follows Bali’s rainy season necessitates spraying reservoirs of water around your house that can become nesting areas for infectious mosquitoes. *Never snorkel/scuba without a companion. *For diarrhea, rehydration salts (bubuk glukosa) with brand names Oralit and Pharolit (Rp1500 per sachet) can be bought at apotik; mix powder with lots of water. *Drink Temulawak (“Bali Beer”), produced in Denpasar in old Bintang beer bottles, quiets upset stomach, calms nausea and restores energy.

*Best fuel for old cars. Premium(Rp6555/liter); Petrolite (Rp7400/liter); Pertamax (Rp8150/liter) are your three choices for fuel at Bali’s filling stations. Just go with the regular octane Benzin. Consumer protection groups regularly debunk the myth that buying higher octane “premium” gas boosts a car’s performance, makes it go faster, gets better mileage or runs cleaner. Higher octane gasoline offers no benefits and can add Rp1.5 million rupiah a year in extra costs and is only needed if your car’s engine knocks or pings.

*Shopping tips. *The big Carrefour on Jl. Sunset Road has a low pressure sales environment and a fairly good range of everything. *Large 25kg of rice cost Rp235,000Rp250,000, depending on brand. Rice (beras merah) from Jatiluwih is the tastiest, but range in price from Rp18,000-Rp20,000/kg. Dua Putri Bali (Rp9,000-Rp10,000/kg) is a good but cheaper brand. *Beer & Co., Jl. Legian 133 in Kuta (hp 0811-3886-658) is a nice little bar and shop selling reasonably priced imported brews. *Our reliable Mirado and Pagol wall clocks (only Rp100,000 to Rp200,000, depending on size and model) are quiet and still going strong after three years! *Shoe sizes 10+ are hard to find. Perhaps Bata or Matahari, but not always. Best to bring with you from abroad. *Buy songbirds in natural areas such as the villages of Pupuan where the avifauna is stronger, healthier and cheaper than is found in the bird markets of Denpasar. *Lazada e-shopping site can take two weeks to get goods to Bali because of slow Pos Indonesia service; faster is www.blibli.com or OLX - like Gumtree or Craigslist – which has an e-presence in Bali.

Occasional Articles From Our Readers

NOISE IN PARADISE Noise, or what we perceive as noise is typically measured in decibel. A logarithmic unit expressing the ratio of a physical quantity. Bali in the year 1930, right at the beginning of tourism, would read a calming 30 decibel of noise, consisting of bird songs, the noise of the ocean, wind in the palm trees, even the sound of the occasional rooster or barking dog in the distance. Pure bliss. Since then, the world, and Bali in particular has come a long way. Our Balinese brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers handed this beautiful island into our hands, to protect and preserve it as they have done before us. Bali remained its charm and unique status, throughout colonization, wars, terrorist-attacks, and one of the fastest growing tourism industries in the world. We are now facing the next challenge. Pollution, the long lasting devastating effect of polluting ourselves and the environment we live in. One among the various forms of pollution, there is noise pollution. The effects are truly threat full and devastating to the ones exposed. High stress levels, hypertension, sleep disorders, coronary artery disease, hearing loss, tinnitus, the list goes on and on. In short, noise pollution reduces your live expectancy and quality of life, by quite a bit. We have been approached by a friend from Tulamben who was closing down his restaurant, claiming the noise of the road had over the years become unbearable for him and his clients. So we set out on our mission to measure noise levels all over Bali and the impact on local business. A simple App downloaded to our smart phones gave us the tool to measure decibel levels quite simple.

We tried a few applications, most of which proved reliable and effective and even free. Very soon we realized that the biggest polluter was not the normal traffic but modified exhaust systems often referred to as “racing mufflers “or knalpot racing on bikes, cars and even trucks. The amount of modified systems and the noise levels they produce took us by surprise. Our friend was right, we ate out of courtesy in his restaurant and we only needed a few minutes to understand his point of view. A truck with a whistle exhaust passed by and I feared to have a heart attack over my pasta. The measurement results were shocking, we often read a devastating 130 decibel, and in some cases even more. Noise levels that high have a serious impact on your health, even in a single event. Even professional motor-sport events do not allow such levels. An eardrum rupture appears to happen around 150 decibel. Now imagine living or working roadside where every day or night with hundreds of these bikes passing by. Possibly accompanied by a couple of trucks with built in whistles in their exhaust systems. Real professionals install these whistles on their braking system too. That delivers a constant 125 decibel. I feel like laughing because I have no adequate reaction to this, why to harm others? In such an environment its not a question if, but only when you will fall ill.

surprisingly, areas where tourism is evolving near major roads are most effected. In Karengasem the trend of these modifications are more frequent than in other areas. Clearly it is very trendy here, to remove your exhaust for the nightly sport of racing up and down the main road. So we continued our search for calm with ringing ears. But no matter where we searched, quietness and peace were rarely to be found. At least nowhere close to a road. Noise levels are exponential, 130 decibel for example is 50 times louder then 80 decibel. The Indonesian Government has regulated noise levels for bikes as early as 2009. They have been more or less successfully implemented in Bandung and Jakarta and other cities where Police have cleared the roads from the worst offenders. Bali needs our help now, this new form of pollution is developing faster than any other and is threatening the environment, the health of human beings and the tourism industry. We are all challenged to act, to educate, to give positive example to others. There is no more time for selfish and shortsighted behavior. If you have one of these exhaust on your bike, please get rid of it.

Clearly any tourist would avoid a place like that for his romantic dinner. Bad luck for the one who invested and spent a premium price to be on that same road.

Do it for all of all of us, for Bali, for our future.

Shop owners say that 5 years ago it was all different. Not

Skin diseases that you can catch from your pet Our furry friends here in Bali usually live in our houses and share our home environment. Being in such close contact, it is perhaps inevitable that sometimes disease is transmitted from dogs and cats to their owners. Though the diseases discussed in this article can affect any person, immunocompromised people such as infants, the elderly or those who are HIV+ need to be extra careful. Here we discuss skin diseases of dogs and cats that can present a risk to their owners.

of infection for their owners. In dogs and cats, infections with ringworm usually resolve by themselves given time, unless the animal is immunocompromised (e.g. on steroids). However, treatment is recommended so that the risk of transmission to humans is lessened. Dogs and cats are usually treated with a topical solution of itraconazole, while affected humans are usually prescribed an anti fungal cream to apply to affected areas.

In general, keeping pets clean, free from parasites and healthy, as well as good personal and household hygiene such as proper hand washing, will minimize the risk of catching a disease from your pet. However, people belonging to risk categories (the immunosuppressed) need more specific advice. The most common skin diseases transmissible to humans that occur in dogs and cats are sarcoptic mange (scabies), cheyletiellosis (mite infestation), fleas and dermatophytosis (ringworm). Below we look at each of these diseases more closely.

Otodectic Mange (Ear Mites)

Flea Infestation Since the reservoir of fleas is predominantly in the environment, and jump onto the human from there, one might argue that this is not strictly transmitted from the animal. However, it is introduced into the household by the animal and therefore falls into this category. The flea will readily feed on humans and can cause a marked hypersensitivity reaction in some individuals. In addition, fleas can transmit other diseases, such as cat scratch disease (Bartonella henselae), tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum) and plague (Yersinia pestis). Regular flea control with veterinary recommended spot on treatments (available from Sunset Vet or your nearest vet clinic) will keep the environmental population of fleas low, and minimize the risk of bites. Sarcoptic Mange This is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, and can affect a number of species. Different strains of the mite do tend to prefer different species, and the most common one which affects dogs and foxes only has an estimated 20 per cent chance of transmission to humans. Prolonged skin to skin contact is the main route of transmission, with the disease presenting as an itchy rash with small red spots. Usually, disease in the human will clear up of its own accord, once the dog has been treated appropriately with a medicated shampoo or spot on drug. Occasionally, humans may need their own treatment though. It is very important to treat all in contact dogs as well. Unlike fleas, these mites do not tend to survive for long in the environment so reinfection is rare once the dog has been treated. Cheyletiellosis This can be caught from dogs, cats and small mammals such as rabbits or guinea pigs. Mites can survive in the environment for several days. Humans are only transiently infected, and develop itchy spots. Appropriate treatment of the affected animal, and the in contact animals, resolves the problem. Dermatophytosis (Ringworm) This is actually a type of fungus, not a worm as the name suggests. The most common type in dogs and cats is Microsporum canis. Transmission is often by direct contact, but spores can remain infective in the environment for many months. Dogs and cats may be carriers of the disease without showing any signs of it themselves, while acting as a source

These mites cause ear infections in dogs, cats and ferrets. They can, rarely, affect skin outside of the ear, and this has been reported sometimes in humans. It is however rare, and easily controlled by treating the affected animal with a certain acaricidal spot on drug (e.g. selamectin, moxidectin) or topical ear drops.

Malassezia Dermatitis These are yeasts often found on normal skin in dogs, cats, humans and other species. Skin disease occurs as a reaction to the yeasts overgrowth and the hosts reaction to it. Transmission to humans has only ever been documented in immunocompromised people, and the risk of infection is low. Staphylococcal Infections Staphylococcal pyoderma (bacterial skin infection) is common in dogs, but not in cats. It often occurs secondary to another disease and usually involves the bacterium Staphylococcus intermedius. Contrast this to humans, where the main cause of bacterial skin infection is Staphylococcus aureus, and it is clear that the risk of transmission to humans is very low.

Mycobacterial Infections Tuberculosis poses a risk to human health. The bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis can infect both cats and humans, and pass between them. The disease presents as nodules, draining tracts or non healing wounds, or as respiratory disease. Urgent medical and veterinary attention should be sought, though the incidence of pets passing it to their owners is very low. What can immunocompromised people do to minimize the risk to them? Firstly, a risk assessment should be carried out. Good communication is essential between the medical and veterinary professionals involved. The goal is to maintain disease free status in the pet, whilst practicing thorough hygiene measures by the person. Being immunocompromised does not mean you cannot have a pet, but the following points should be taken into consideration:

NATURAL NO MORE DENGUE? Along with zika and chikungunya, this painful disease is found in the tropics all around the world. But this is also where WHO and others are searching for a cure, because for centuries the locals have brewed vile, nasty-tasting concoctions that they know help the mosquitoes stay away or speed up the process of recovery. A local group called Kunchi Bali is seeking crowd funding to support work with ancient medicinal plants from the Bali forests; we certainly know that the other route - pesticide, fogging, GMO mosquitos, vaccines and synthetic drugs – has proved perilous in the past.

Temu kunchi is a rare medicinal ginger used for centuries throughout Asia as a food spice and a medicinal plant. Under the botanical name Boesenbergia rotunda (previously Kaempferia pandurata), it has been researched extensively and identified as an important anti-dengue herbal plant. Re-visit the 1960’s! Cosmic Diners are different! How often can you say that about a new restaurant that opens in Bali? So many just re-hash what everyone else is doing, and sometimes not even getting that right! Cosmic are American diners as seen through the eyes of an alert young Balinese who spent some considerable time in America during his training for future life in the family business. He returned to Bali full of ideas; and what is more important, the ideas are working! The attention to design detail at Cosmic Sanur is amazing, the concept of a small intimate train carriage was brilliant and is sure to become a teen hangout. Everything about the place is 1960’s America, even the background music. However no matter how fancy the icing is on the cake is it is the taste that counts most, and here Cosmic is a winner! The dishes may be simple, but their construction and attention to detail are excellent. When you first order at Cosmic you are presented with a small carton of popcorn [it is an American diner], and what I thought was very strange; a shot glass of water! I soon discovered that in fact the small glass contained coconut water; cool, fresh and sweet. A pre-warning that everything here is just that little bit different, so good for a change! Breakfast, any time of the day! Why can’t everyone do that? Why do they all have to copy old fashioned hotels and cut off at 11.00, or even 10.00 a.m? Breakfast was my first try at Cosmic. I do enjoy a ‘tourist breakfast’ when traveling so why not try it occasionally at home? The Morning After was the title and whilst it was hardly that for me the breakfast of bacon, eggs, mushrooms, chicken sausage and two slabs of sourdough toast was perfect! American Diners are often located on connecting roadways between residential areas and office/factory ones, so an all day breakfast is very popular with shift workers. Other breakfast options include the classic Eggs Benedict, with a bit of a twist, poached eggs, smoked ham, sautéed spinach, toasted sourdough, Hollandaise sauce, a Mexican breakfast of scrambled eggs, chorizo, refried red kidney beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, tortilla chips or a trendy one from the cafes of New York City; Ricotta Hotcakes, with mixed berries compote, fresh banana,

whipped maple butter & honey. Also more trendy café than diner fare is a choice of salads; Pan-fried Chicken & Avocado or Black & White Sesame Crusted Tuna. The same could be said of pasta dishes. Fusilli with spicy chorizo, fettuccine with meat balls, penne with chicken and mushroom or an old American favourite; Truffle Mac & Cheese, sprinkled with bacon crumble. Diner food is traditionally fast and satisfying. What could fill the bill better than a juicy hamburger. Cosmic seem to have perfected the budget hamburger, even though they only use wagyu beef [a blend of chuck, brisket and short rib]. The Cosmic hamburgers, the patties all 150 gram, can be original, with cheese or a number of other fancy ways. Surprisingly good! Cosmic would not qualify as an American Diner if there were no pancakes! As they are made fresh to order, a slight wait is necessary, never a problem when quality is at stake. Most are served as a dessert with a variety of fruits, creams and ice creams. However there s also a main meal version with buttermilk fried chicken, maple syrup of course!

More serious meals are also available, but like all else here are budget priced, and of consistent quality. A Chicken Parmigiana is one of those standby dishes, always good. Simple and satisfying. Being an American diner there must be a Hot Dog! They use a beef frankfurter, yellow mustard, ketchup with sweet onion & bacon jam with fries. However the beer-battered Fish & Chips is about as English as you can get, it comes with tartar and citrus salt, tastes good! A Pulled Pork Sandwich uses meat slowly cooked for 18 hours, cole slaw and BBQ sauce. Steak is essential and so are Baby Back Ribs. The Steak [rib-eye] is diner style with black pepper or mushroom, a touch of Europe with Bearnaise or café-style fancy in a shiraz reduction and trufled potatoes. Only open a couple of months and Cosmic Sanur have already added a small range of Asian influenced dishes that are popular in the cafes of the USA, rice bowls. Black Pepper Beef is shredded meat stir-fried in black pepper sauce topped with shavings of crisp onion. Pork Belly, double cooked in soy is another, sharing the bowl with a fried egg and sautéed corn kernels. Both are excellent but the Chicken version was perfect! The chicken, as fish, so often overcooked in Bali, was tender and moist. The use of chicken thighs instead of the more common breast provided more taste, a light infusion with teriyaki sauce just right, with broccoli and carrots sprinkled with garlic chips. A good simple dish! What a great addition to the Sanur dining scene, where same-same is usually the norm!

Update

TJ’s is one of Bali’s original tourist restaurants, all of which were begun in the vicinity of Bemo Square, Kuta. Located on a corner of Poppies Lane I, the garden and water pond interior always has a cooling effect upon entering. Mexican restaurants [or Cal-Mex/Tex-Mex] have come and gone all over Bali, but TJ’s remains, virtually unchanged for more than 30 years. One of their secrets is their attention to detail. They even make their own tortillas, tacos, etc. What is more the tacos at TJ’s do not crumble in your fingers, yet they are thinner and crispier than most others. Reason is that they are freshly made here [most others are imported, therefore frozen as tacos have a very short shelf life]. For me Mexican is usually finger food, here there are so many options. Starters of Taquitos [corn tortillas stuffed with shredded beef], Flautas [flour tortillas rolled with spicy chicken and cheese, the deep-fried] or Quesadilla [soft flour tortilla filled with chilli con queso], but I prefer the Chimminchanga, deep-fried tortilla parcels of chilli con carne with sour cream and guacamole. However it is the humble Taco that I first think of whenever someone says ‘Mexican’. At TJ’s there is quite a choice. The crisp corn taco can be filled with beef [pictured], chicken or fish; it is then topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and that tangy taco sauce. Alternatively your tacos can be soft versions with a variety of different toppings. TJ’s also keeps adding new menu items. They now offer a starter of Corn Fritters [green salsa] that was maybe based on that Indonesian favourite and a main that definitely has local roots; Chicken Rendang Burrito, rolled in a soft flour tortilla.

The Mansions in Sayan, is offering a magic, romantic dinner option. It is their Tree House Dinner. It is actually located in their Chestnut Tree House, the menu is priced at Rp.1,450,000++ for 2 persons, and that includes a bottle of Balinese wine. Food is your choice from their menu. Soups: lemongrass or mushroom. Salad: prawn, duck or green. Entrees include grilled lobster or lobster thermidor, rack of lamb and tenderloin steak. Desserts: crème caramel, red rubies or coconut crepe. Something very different! Salumeria Tanah Barak is the latest trendy café in Canggu, an area where such places are almost becoming common. The residents of Canggu and further south all seem to have given up the fight with traffic congestion between home and Seminyak and now mostly dine locally. This one had a charmed beginning as it was set up by well known Melbourne chef Geoff Lindsay [Saigon Street in Bali and Pearl and Dandelion restaurants in Melbourne], and has not looked back. Salumeria is an Italian word to describe a place where processed meats [cured, smoked] are prepared and sold. The name is now more commonly used in America than in Italy, New York City is full of them. However this one is a retailer only, using both imported and local product. The Salumi Tasting Platter is a good way to start; you are provided with a selection of both locally produced and imported salumi. There are many other small plates to snack on such as the simple Boiled Egg and Anchovy or Grilled Cheese with Smoked Paprika. Spanish white anchovies, pomegranate, capers & crisp bread is more complex and there is always that Italian classic of Prosciutto e Melone. Interesting salads include one with pea, mint, fresh ricotta & ricotta, lemon infused olive oil and anchovy grissini, a sandwich of smoked turkey, fontina and cranberry on a panini or the very New York Ruben sandwich on rye with corned beef, Russian dressing, sauerkraut & pickles. Great place for a snack, and a glass or two! Lamak has long been one of Ubud’s finest restaurants. Its unique garden setting [by the late Made Wijaya] sets it off from the rest. Only 20 metres from Monkey Forest Road, yet totally isolated from its noise and chaos. It is a secret garden in fact. Original menu concept was based on French/Italian fine dining cuisines but with Asian influences. That continues but the menu has also been extended to include both a few modern creations plus a couple of exceptional local dishes, and for this quality, and setting, at very budget prices. There are a number of new dishes now available. The small plates [some can be had as an entrée or a main], include a very healthy option, Goat Cheese and Grilled Vegetables with arugula pesto and sun dried tomatoes. Pomelo Crab combines those two ingredients with young coconut, lime and fresh mint. A salad of beetroot and feta cheese is enriched by a hazelnut and blue cheese vinaigrette. A soup with a difference is their Truffle and Sweet Corn, served with a Parmesan crisp. Star of their mains is what they call Pan-fried Poulet, one that I just order as Mango Chicken, one of my current favourite dishes in Bali. The very tender chicken breast is coconut crusted, filled with a puree of mango, and sits on logs of grilled zucchini which tend to keep the escalope dry for subsequent dipping in the base sauce, a spicy turmeric. Wonderful! Also very different is their Turkey Cordon Bleu, turkey is one of my favourite meats and one that is rarely used in Bali outside of Thanksgiving and Christmas. The turkey at Lamak is stuffed with ham and Swiss cheese and served with edamame pods and garlic mashed potatoes. The desserts are so good at Lamak that many customers drop in for them late at night. Whenever it is on special the Red Velvet Cake is exceptional. I am not a chocolate cake fan but can never resist this one.

Vietnamese cuisine has never had a big presence in Bali, a fact that has always amazed me. Australia has for the past 30 years provided the largest constant flow of international tourists to Bali and Asian cuisines totally lead the way in Australia, unlike in any other western country. Chinese [mainly Cantonese] has for many years been the clear leader, ever so closely being pushed by Thai in recent years, followed by Vietnamese, then Japanese, Indian and Korean lagging well behind, However, both the availability of quality Chinese and Thai had been lacking until recent years in Bali and Vietnamese barely visible. The availability of quality Thai was solved by Will Meyrick and Chinese by Happy Chappy. And now the missing link, Vietnamese, is about to change in Seminyak as well, with a new major traditional Vietnamese restaurant about to open. With actual Vietnamese management! I look forward to that.

35 CV. BAYU SANTERO IMMIGRATION SERVICES Shari Hartman hails from Vancouver in Canada. She attended McGill University, completing a Bachelor’s in Costume Design. Shari has earned a long list of certificates in a variety of massages and other healing modalities. She started her own custom design company in Canada and worked for many theatres. She also sold photographic equipment and worked in a photo lab as a specialist technician, developing film and restoring old photos. Shari taught English in Jakarta in 1991. The following year she was posted to Bali to head the English training program for airport staff at Sempati Airlines. Shari is a current member of the Bali Spa Wellness Association and is the author of The Spa Guru’s Home Spa, published in 2015.

What inspired you to get into massage therapy? After a car accident in 1980, and underwent four years of therapy to return to a state of heath, I discovered that massage helped me more than any other therapy. I studied Shiatsu for three years and became certified. I worked in Vancouver doing Shiatsu from 1990 to 1991. In Thailand in 1990 I discovered Thai massage and returned a year later to study that technique.

What gave you the idea of starting your column Beauty & Health in the Bali Advertiser? I had written several feature stories for Bali Advertiser, usually spa related because it’s my field of expertise. I proposed the column as I thought I would enjoy writing reviews on spas. During the past four years I have built up a reputation as an expert in the spa industry. I’ve developed a lot of spa connections here. I often meet people who read my column and who have reached out to me to find out more. Several Indonesian members call me The Spa Guru, which inspired me to use that title for my book.

What do clients and readers most often ask you about? The number one question I’m asked when meeting new people, especially visitors to Bali is: Where’s a good place to get a good massage? This is why I write a yearly review on the best massage places in Seminyak, Ubud, Canggu and Sanur. I try to find places that are moderately priced for expat clients. Many of my lady friends also ask about where to have facial treatments.

What qualities make a spa stand out? When I walk into a new spa, I look for nice décor, aromatherapy scents, flowers and friendly staff. Is it clean? Nice smelling? Are the therapists friendly and enthusiastic in offering treatments? I don’t especially like ones with the staff standing outside trying to lure customers inside. Are the therapists well trained and speak some English? Are the treatment rooms spacious, clean and comfortable? Cleanliness and comfort are vital in a spa. Does the spa have an interesting spa menu? Are the products good quality and natural? If a therapist has bad acne and is giving facial treatments, why are they not taking better care of their own health and using products to improve their appearance?

Do Bali’s spas adhere to a minimum standard of service? Several years ago there were no set standards for spas. But now thanks to the Bali Spa Wellness Association, steps have been taken to set standards and to work with the national government to organize meaningful training programs. Most good quality spas offer training for their staff with certification upon completion. Bali has come a long way since 2005 when I helped open Bali’s first spa school – Jamu Spa School – that helped create the standards for therapists.

How do Bali’s spas find well-qualified therapists? Bali’s spa community networks to find trained, qualified, professional therapists that makes it easier for former employees of reputable spas to find new positions. Now with several spa schools operating in Bali, many former students

can more easily find employment and are even able to secure work abroad which offer much higher salaries.

How do Bali’s spas compare to spas in other Southeast Asia countries? Bali and Thailand seem to take turns winning awards for spa capital, i.e. having the best spas in Southeast Asia. The other countries of the region try to emulate Bali and Thailand. The Balinese are well known for their gracious service. Now Europe and North America strive to replicate the ambience, services and styles of the tropical spa that Bali and Thailand are famous for. Gone are the sterile clinical spas of the past. People enjoy being in a beautiful, relaxing oasis, an ideal peaceful get-away, even if it’s only for an hour or two.

What detoxifying or cleansing treatments found in Bali are really unique? The best detoxifying treatment I’ve tried is at Cocoon, a medical spa that uses high tech equipment. Their amazing Colonics treatment is followed by an infrared sauna and three drinks to rebalance the body. For body cleansing, a body scrub is best.

How prevalent are harmful synthetic chemicals, preservatives and fragrances in Bali’s spas? The big well-known spas don’t use any synthetic products. However, in the cheaper places that are found everywhere, most use far less expensive synthetic products such as baby oil for massage, which is petroleum based with fragrance oils added for scent. Anything you put on your skin is going into your body. Therefore, if you put toxins on your skin, you’re putting toxins in your body. We all know that this is bad for your health.

C/BT/I-15 Feb 17

Can you give an examples of a dramatic treatment that has really helped someone? A good friend of mine asked how to treat pigmentation on her face. I suggested IPL light spa treatment using high tech equipment. She had the treatment but a few days later very dark dry splotches appeared on her face. She was upset, thinking she looked even worse. I told her to wait until the scabs came off. A few days later all the scabs were off and she had beautiful clear baby-like skin.

What training courses do you recommend for people who want to work in the spa industry? There are several good spa schools here in Bali, but I recommend Jamu Spa School and Bali BISA. Both offer CIBTAC classes which are internationally accredited.

C/BT/G-14 Sept 16

What do you enjoy most about your work? I love being pampered and meeting new people.

Corby, who was arrested with 4.2kg of cannabis in her boogie board bag at Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport on October 8, 2004, told officials she would fly back to Brisbane when her sentence ends. The head of Bali corrections, Surung Pasaribu, told Fairfax Media that Corby had tears in her eyes when he told her on Thursday she would be free as of May 27. “She asked after she returned to Australia, how long until she can return to sightseeing in Indonesia?” Corby, 39, has denied she has a boyfriend, despite reports linking her with Indonesian Ben Panangian. Foreigners deported from Indonesia are generally banned from entering the country for at least six months. However, the head of Bali immigration, Muhammad Natsir, who also met with Corby on Thursday morning, said the ban was not up to immigration and she should check with the Indonesian Consulate in Australia. “Her ban would be up to the arresting department, the initiator, not up to us.” Corby was healthy but expressed frustration at not being able to lose weight because she was stalked by paparazzi. “She said to me that she’s scared of the media, they followed her at home, when she’s jogging, at the beach. Everywhere,” Natsir said. “She’s overweight now because she is too scared to go and work out.” Corby’s parole officers said she had been most cooperative and never failed to report for meetings or follow instructions. “She always complied with the requirements,” Surung said. “I went there to check if Corby really came to report and she did, we confirmed that.” Corby was sentenced to 20 years’ jail in 2005 but had her sentence cut to 15 years in 2012 after she was granted clemency by former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. She was released on parole in 2014 but was required to remain in Bali until her sentence ran out. Corby has quietly lived in Kuta over the past few years and has rarely been spotted in public apart from occasional runs along the beach or grocery shopping trips. Natsir said Corby would be taken to the airport on May 27 and placed in an immigration room until her flight back to Australia. “The sooner her flight back the better,” he said. “We don’t want to cause her psychological (difficulty) by making her wait too long.” [Brisbane Times April 13, 2017]

Chinese Tourists Injured When in Roll-Over Accident on Nusa Penida

A group of Chinese tourists visiting Nusa Penida Island suffered injuries when their vehicle suffered a flat tire, ran off the road, struck a roadside rock, and rolled over on Friday, April 14, 2017. The accident near the Village of Buga Mekar left 4 tourists and the driver of the Suzuki APV injured and requiring medical treatment at Bali’s Sanglah General Hospital. NusaBali identified the injured tourists as Li Cing, (28), Haring Wei (29) Li Chung Hu (27) and Liau Suching (23). The driver of the vehicle, also injured in the mishap, was I Ketut Cinta (40) of Nusa Penida. The driver suffered a broken right arm, while Li Cing a broken rib and wounds to the head and hands. The remaining 3 tourist’s injuries were relatively minor in nature. Local villagers on Nusa Penida assisted in evacuating the driver and passengers and placing them on a boat back to the mainland for medical treatment. The group was on a day outing from the mainland that left Sanur Beach earlier the same morning. [balidiscovery.com April 16, 2017]

Frighten Tourists Leap from a Driverless Bus Headed into Bali’s Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

A tourist bus hung precariously on a ledge in the World Heritage Site Rice Terrace region of Jatiluwih when it left the main road on Monday. April 10, 2017. The bus carrying 15 European passengers was driven by Saroso (53). NusaBali reports that the bus had parked on the road near The Gong Restaurant to permit passengers a photo opportunity of the famous rice terraces. All the passengers had disembarked the bus when 3 passengers decided to return to the parked bus with its engine still running. The bus suddenly began to move forward without the driver at the wheel and lurched over the 1.5-meter embankment of a nearby rice field. Terrified to be on a hillside in a driverless bus that was moving, the three tourists jumped from the moving bus. Fortunately, no injuries have been linked to the accident that required a toll truck to get the bus back on the road and caused limited damage to the exterior of the bus. Police suspect the driver may have failed to properly set the parking brake on the vehicle. [balidiscovery.com April 16, 2017]

Bali Lawmakers Label Sabargita Bus System a Waste of Taxpayers Money Due to Low Passenger Numbers The Provincial House of Representatives for Bali (DPRD-Bali) is asking that a critical review of the Sarbagita Public Bus System be undertaken. Lawmakers are lamenting that the bus system, operated with buses provided by the Central Government, continue to lose money and costs the province Rp. 18 billion each year in subsidies.

I Ketut Yama Tenaya, a member of Commission I of the DPRD-Bali, told a House hearing on Monday, April 10, 2017, that the bus service continues to be a waste of public funds due to the low number of passengers carried. Quoted in NusaBali, Tenaya said, “What I see is empty seats. We are just throwing away our money.” Tenaya said many times the Trans Sabargita buses leave for Nusa Dua without a single passenger. Boy Electrocuted While Drinking from a Public Water Fountain Rendi Rizaldi, a 13-year-old junior high student living in Bali died tragically on Thursday, April 13, 2017, while recreating the Puputan Public Park in downtown Denpasar. Sanurpost.com says the boy was electrocuted while taking a drink from a public drinking fountain recently installed in the Park by the State Water Board (PDAM). The public water fountain located on the south side of the Park across from the 1611 Badung Military Command has been cordoned off by police an investigative scene. An eyewitness to the incident, Bagus Suryadi, said the boy was electrocuted at around 4:50 pm while trying to drink from the fountain. An electrical inspector from the State Power Board (PLN) confirmed that the water pipe was damaged and had somehow become electrified. Police continue to investigate the case and are determining if criminal negligence may have caused the boy’s death. [balidiscovery.com April 16, 2017]

Indonesian Gay Couple First to Face Trial for Breaking Religious Laws Two young men are likely to be Indonesia’s first gay couple to face trial for breaching religious laws. A video shows the men, aged 20 and 23, held in custody by Indonesian vigilantes who allegedly kick, slap and insult the pair before they’re turned over to the province’s religious police. The duo could face trial for breaking religious laws after neighbours allegedly walked in on them together. They will be caned if convicted, with a maximum penalty of 100 strokes. It’s understood neighbours grew suspicious of the duo’s relationship and took it upon themselves to investigate. Banda Aceh’s head of investigations for the Sharia Police, Marzuki Ali, said the people who detained the pair on March 28 were neighbours of the men who were suspicious of the couple. The mobile footage shows a naked man on the floor making a phone call. “Brother, please help, please help, please help us,” he says on the phone. Another man is seen in the background getting pushed back from the doorway in a rough manner while the man on the floor is slapped and kicked. The neighbours are also heard calling one of the men “a dog” – a particularly offensive insult to any Muslim. Banda Aceh’s religious police enforce the province’s strict sharia code. Andreas Harsono, from the group Human Rights Watch, said the code against gay sex was passed in 2014, but until now authorities had not had enough evidence to charge anyone. A total of 339 people were flogged in Aceh last year for so-called moral offences like gambling, drinking, or spending time in private with a member of the opposite sex. [Yahoo7 April 11, 2017] Bank Indonesia Cracks Down On Unauthorized Money Changers, Many of Which Are in Bali Bank Indonesia, the country’s central bank says it is cracking down on unauthorized money changers across the country, many of which have been operating in Bali. Money changers were given an ultimatum to go legit and get officially licensed by April 7, 2017, according to Eni V. Panggabean, BI executive director of Payment System Policy and Oversight Department. The bank gave money changers the opportunity to apply for free licenses since Oct. 2016, but after the deadline, rule-breakers were met with a punishment of getting shut down or a Rp 1 billion fine. Before its deadline, BI says it identified 184 offenders who were working without the permit: 95 were disciplined; 71 were shut down; and 18 applied for permits from BI. Of all the provinces, Bali had the most offenders, according to Panggabean. Licensed money changers have a ‘KUPVA BB’ (licensed money changer) logo present on site and have to report their transactions back to the bank on a monthly basis. Last year, BI launched a website mapping out money changers with KUPVA BB across Bali. Whereas, moneychangers that BI found unlicensed were sealed with a sticker, indicating that the shop is no longer operational. Removing or damaging the sticker is a criminal offense, says Panggabean. While keeping tourists from getting ripped off is a huge part of the money changer ‘clean up,’ BI’s motives go beyond that. The bank is also targeting corrupt officials, money launderers, tax evaders, drug smugglers, and other parties who use money changers to move money in the country. [Coconuts Bali April 17, 2017] Public Drinking Fountains Shut Down Across Denpasar after 13-Year-Old Dies from Electrocution Bali’s capital city Denpasar has shut down seven public water fountains after a 13-year-old was electrocuted while drinking from one on April 13, 2017. Following the death of Rendi Rizaldi, 13, after he was shocked when taking a drink at a fountain in Puputan, the city has switched off all of its public fountains until further notice to ‘alleviate public trauma.’ Managed by regional water supply company PDAM Denpasar, the drinking fountains are located across public spaces in the city, like around the jogging track in Renon and Lumintang Field. The fountain where Rizaldi was shocked was the oldest of the public drinking taps in Denpasar and was installed back in 2010. PDAM Denpasar director Ida Bagus Gde Arsana says the water fountains are regularly serviced and he’s not gotten reports of shocks before Rendi’s death, despite allegations that at least two other people complained about getting shocked by Denpasar fountains. “First of all, PDAM has never received any complaints about this,” Arsana said on Friday, as quoted by Tribun Bali. “We always do routine maintenance every two weeks.” [Coconuts Bali April 17, 2017] 15-Year-Old Indonesian Student Dies After Getting Lost During Study Tour to Bali A 15-year-old junior high school student from Central Java on a group tour to Bali has died after getting separated from his fellow students during a Friday prayer stop at Bukit Lesung near Candi Kuning in Bali’s highland lake district at Bedugul on Friday afternoon, March 31, 2017. When the bus carrying the students on a Bali study-tour left the area the ill-fated student Yuda Setya Wardana was not on board prompting a 22-hour search until he was found cold and exhausted on Saturday afternoon in a local Muslim cemetery. The boy died five days later on Thursday, April 6, 2017,in the intensive care unit of a Tabanan Hospital. Shortly after arriving at the hospital on Saturday afternoon, Wardana underwent emergency brain surgery and was placed in an induced coma for three days by surgeons to aid his recovery. Doctors say the boy died as the result of respiratory failure caused by an unknown injury to the lungs that did not show up on x-rays taken at the time of admission. The boy’s family, who traveled from Slemen in Central Java to his bedside in Tabanan, issued thanks to local residents who joined the search for their son, to the Regent of Tabanan who covered the cost of medical care, the police, and the school teachers who kept vigil at the hospital. 37 Bali Daze They do things differently there. That used to be something people said of the past, as in its being a foreign country. In the tried and true practice of Bali, however, doing things differently is something those who rule the island prefer to do in the present. The past is historic and mythical. The future hasn’t yet arrived and is therefore notional and can take care of itself. Those among us with long memories (that is, more than the preceding 12 months) will recall earlier schemes where attachment to reality somehow failed to find its way into the master plan. The round-island railway comes to mind. There are others, but we won’t go on. Now we hear that an offshore airport will be constructed near Singaraja on the north coast, where the submerged landform goes gazompa in a steeply downward direction as soon as the narrow coral fringe of coastal water ends. We’d love to see the engineering plans (not the pretty public relations guff; that’s useless). As usual, the timeframe for development is hysterical. And we’ll ignore the economics, since everyone else is. But these are of no moment. This is Bali. What might be of interest are two elements of the engineering required for the offshore airport and its onshore supporting infrastructure – including the lengthy Jasa Marga toll road proposed to link the south and the north through geologically unstable landforms and forests of unalienable adat ownership. The runways, taxiways and standing areas for big aircraft require thousands of tonnes of concrete of a thickness that would mystify most Indonesian civil engineers. Keeping that afloat would be a challenge. And then there’s the question of how to engineer the thing to avoid its destruction by a standard-risk 10-metre tsunami.

Way to Go The innovative Program Dharma animal health project being run by Udayana University with support from the international organisation IFAW and locally the Bali Animal Welfare Association is showing great results, which deserve notice. A pilot program in 28 banjars in Sanur (Denpasar) has reduced the rabies threat there to an observed zero incidence, supported community engagement that’s a great model for the government to follow and implement island wide, and improved health in the local dog population. All of this has been done without unnecessary killing of street and beach dogs, whose right to exist – and to coexist with the human population – is unquestionable, or should be. By keeping itinerant dogs healthy, including by vaccinating them against rabies so that the protective screen against the disease remains effective, and getting banjars involved in caring for them, an integral part of Bali’s heritage can be preserved. There are signs that the authorities at provincial and regency level are at last recognising this. There’s no shortage of assistance available from foreign sources, including financially. The equally innovative Japanese program, from Kumamoto in Kyushu, is in place. Kumamoto eliminated rabies in cats – the disease vector there – by focused effort and effective administration.

Go Divas! Christina Iskandar, Sydney wife-mother-grandmother and former Bali fixture, isn’t someone to let the grass grow under her feet. The first-ever Sydney Divas charity lunch, on Apr. 1 at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Point Piper, which we can safely say wouldn’t have happened without her, raised a very substantial sum for the Bali Children Association. The money is sufficient to help the children of an entire village, an outcome that is truly wonderful news. We wish we could have been there for the inaugural event, but Sydney is already in our travel plans for a little later this year – 2017 is a big year for really important birthdays – and dollar-deprived diarists are compelled to budget. Iskandar’s now internationalised Divas, who started the money-raising round here in Bali a while ago – and whose local lunchtime affrays are always worth attending for their ambience and to check for fashion foibles – have given new meaning to charitable enterprise in Bali. The Australian connection was always there, but now Iskandar’s back in her old hometown, it’s stronger than ever.

There is, as the old saying puts it, one born every minute. Apparently quite a few of them then visit Bali for holidays. We instance, in this case, a gentleman from Australia who complained to police that he had been unkindly robbed in a Kuta alley by a lady boy who had offered him a one-minute massage in that informal salon. The therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel

We have no view on the sexuality of others, or of their morals, provided they involve only consensual activity and harm no one. It has long been our belief that people are people, and that their peccadilloes are best left to their own decision. For example, the fact that American Vice-President Mike Pence might perhaps feel sexually uncomfortable if he was alone in a dining room with one of Betty Crocker’s fine confections, gives us nary a frisson of fear – as long as he’s never let anywhere near anything that actually matters.

C/NV/I-31 August 16

Similarly, if idiotic tourists want to get drunk and imagine that they’re going to find Nirvana in an alley way with a lady who owns an Adam’s apple, that’s their own affair. The “lady” in question shouldn’t steal the poor sap’s wallet, of course; and, despite the best efforts of the nightclub circuit here, exposing yourself in public is still frowned upon. But, well, whatever.

Changing Times Lippo Group’s takeover of BIMC is now complete, following the 2013 sale of the Nusa Dua and Kuta facilities by BIMC’s Australian principal Craig Beveridge. In a rebranding taking effect today (Apr. 26), the flagship facility at Nusa Dua will become BIMC Siloam Nusa Dua. It’s formally a brand merger, but it also redirects the hospital’s operations towards local people – a positive direction to be warmly welcomed – while keeping a focus on tourist and foreign resident health care. C/CI/G-12 April 17

The hospital, which opened in 2012, has Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI) recognition. In March this year it added crucial Indonesian accreditation from KARS (the national hospital accreditation committee). BIMC Director IA Ratih Komalasari, a medical doctor, says of the changes: “Now is the time for BIMC Siloam Nusa Dua to begin providing affordable, quality healthcare to the local market – essentially all of Bali’s communities now have greater access to all hospitals in the group including this fine facility.” She adds that the merger will generate a positive market reaction once awareness and trust are built. “We are expecting a 40 per cent conversion rate of total patients from local communities. To support the awareness of the brand merger, BIMC Siloam will open a local polyclinic in Badung regency with more affordable prices without compromising healthcare quality.” BIMC marketing manager Windarini Fransiska says: “We believe the rebrand isn’t just a logo, it’s an experience and one that’s shaped by every doctor, nurse, and associate who delivers it and with this all our stakeholders are on board.”

The BIMC Siloam polyclinic will accept patients (KTP, KITAS holders and those with local insurance) from Monday to Saturday. Specialists practising in the BIMC polyclinic include internal medicine specialists, ENT specialists, paediatricians, dentists, anaesthesiologists, obstetricians and gynaecologists, cardiologists, neurologists, general and orthopaedic surgeons, and surgical oncologists. BIMC Siloam Nusa Dua will hold an open house on Apr. 28-29 and May 5-6 so the public can see its facilities and inquire about its services.
