Twilight in K uta by David Nesbit ili ht in uta e plores lo e loss and infidelity in present- day Indonesia from a number of perspectives: the bule ( Caucasian) English teacher, the frustrated and cheating Indonesian wife, the mixed- race schoolgirl, the Javanese ex- soldier and the naive village girl desperate for love. Their stories intertwine throughout the book, and the various narrators offer different interpretations of the events that unfold.

CANGGU NEWS

Petitenget to Pererenan If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you!

Eco Warriors On Wheels

Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com

In an effort to address the ongoing plastic and pollution problem on the island and continue to educate and incentivise Bali youth to be globally aware and active eco warriors, all Blue Bear asks is for skaters to bring a minimum of 10 pieces of trash along and place it in the clearly labelled waste stations in exchange for a green wristband and two hour ticket to ride!

While acknowledging this new venture is a little out of the usual Canggu News demographic, this relatively new Ubud initiative most definitely rates a mention! Blue Bear Bali, located on Jalan Sayan, Ubud is a kids play park with a purpose. Like most youth centric recreation centres, Blue Bear is focused around getting kids off the computers and outside to play, however this particular kids zone comes with an environmental conscience. Bali has seen some fantastic children’s activity parks popping up around the place in the last couple of years but few, if any are open to exchanging one’s trash for an entry ticket! Of course patrons are more than welcome to pay the minimal IDR 30K for a regular entry pass to Blue Bear Skate and Play Park but these guys actually encourage kids to trade their trash from home (or what they may find en route to the park) for a ticket to roll.

If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.

Bins for recyclables such as plastic bottles, plastic bags, glass, paper, cardboard and tetra packs are clearly marked for trash distribution. The waste is then collected by the area’s village waste management organisation named Sayan Hidup. Plastic is sold to Java with other items recycled in Bali. Since the program began on July 1, Blue Bear has witnessed a growing numbers of skaters come to visit and in one month alone the park collected almost a whopping 3000 plastic bottles - testament to the success of the program. Blue Bear is a purpose built recreation centre comprising a skate park, fully supervised play area so parents can enjoy a little ‘me time’, KULT bar and cafe which features a fusion of local and Italian flavours and a stage perfect for live music! The cool bamboo structure, a striking feature of the property, is made entirely from environmentally sustainable items. The skate park welcomes participants of all levels and abilities from ages 4 upwards ( 4-6 year olds must be accompanied by an adult) and their resident instructors are available to teach new tricks and turns. Skaters are welcome to bring their own gear or hire it at the park but

helmets are mandatory and knee and shin pads strongly suggested for all rollers 17 years and under. Blue Bear Bali was built with the whole family in mind. Not just a centre to drop the kids off to play, it encourages outdoor activities, social and cultural awareness and the idea that we are all part of a larger community. The safe, secure and family friendly play park is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 8pm. Check out their Facebook page for weekly photo and event updates, their website: www.bluebearbali.com for full details about park admission and skate lessons or you can drop in and see them on Jalan Raya Sayan, Ubud but don’t forget to take in your trash!

Footy Finals Fever Amps Up @ Finns the Sports Bar, Bistro C, Strike Bar and Bali’s biggest outdoor LED screen right there on the sports field! With all that yelling and yahooing for their favourite teams, footy fans tend to get hungry and foster a hefty thirst and in order to expedite service and keep customers satisfied, Finns is setting up a dedicated food and beer hall on the field. Keep your dry throat drenched with frosty beers from the outdoor bars and the Heineken beer promo - Buy 2, get 1 free! Their ‘Kick the Ball’ comp, live entertainment and of course, Splash Water Park should keep all ages entertained, or parents can ensure pint sized supporters stay safe and sound enjoying a few hours of fun at Cubby House Kids Club.

Grand Final weekend is an Aussie institution. A weekend when footy fans remain fixated to tv screens across the sunburnt country and beyond, each bearing witness to an on field battle between muscle bound men in skimpy shorts, engaged in some kind of brouhaha over an odd shaped ball! What’s not to love about that ladies!

Landing yourself on the Island of the Gods over September’s finals weekend doesn’t mean you’ll miss any of the action either. Your home cable channel may not be televising the AFL and NRL grand finals but Finns is! Finals fever will take hold of Finns Recreation Club again this year and their lineup for this particular weekend is certainly not to be missed.

Seriously though, whether you find yourself on Aussie shores or elsewhere on the last weekend in September, chances are you’ll be searching for somewhere to watch the big games. Yep! Batten down ball fans because there’s not just one, but two grand finals scheduled for Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, 30th. Even if you’re not that fussed on footy, odds are someone in your tribe is a fan so you might as well succumb to finals fun!

Doors open early on Saturday morning with coverage of AFL Grand Final fanfare from 8am then kickoff at 12 noon. With free entry for all, it’s fair to suggest there won’t be a bare bar stool for Grand Final day and advance bookings are advised to ensure your group doesn’t miss out on a table. Wherever you are seated at Finns for finals weekend, you’ll have no problem seeing the game with over forty screens spread throughout

After AFL’s end game is over for another year, it’ll be time to call last drinks and duck home for a night’s rest before you join footy fans once again at Finns the very next day for the NRL Grand Final. Thankfully the latter schedules a later start so you can enjoy a lazy Sunday morning before sports action amps up again from 2pm. Whether your team features as this year’s premiers or fizzes out in the prelims, the atmosphere is nevertheless electric at Finns over AFL and NRL Grand Final weekend. Fans form alliances despite earlier footy team preferences and a generous dose of lighthearted goading is taken in good stride by all. October UFC Clash Isn’t Just Business…It’s Personal! of a cordial rapport however those pleasantries all went pear shaped after an altercation involving McGregor, Khabib and a bus ensued in a Brooklyn carpark in April. Whether this may have be a cleverly orchestrated (and convincing!)publicity stunt intended to build excitement and push the two title holders toward announcing the October clash, or some genuine bad blood between the two champions, it sure makes for one hell of a fight. Clearly fight fans think so too as tickets to this grudge match sold out in less than three hours after initial release! Not an issue for UFC lovers here in Bali though as Finns Recreation Club is showing every minute of Octagon action in a live telecast of the fight of the year from 10am on Sunday, October 7. Entry is free and everybody is welcome to come along for a bird’s eye view as Conor and Khabib battle it out at Las Vegas’ T Mobile Arena. View the fight from over 30 plasma screens throughout the Rec Club as well as their monster 8 m x 3 m LED screen which will be set up outside on the lawn. The coverage begins at 8am with outdoor bars for speedy drink service and of course the air conditioned sports bar for when If there’s one thing that will make the upcoming UFC clash on things feel a little hot under the collar! October 7 one to watch, it’s the ongoing argie bargie between these two opponents outside of the octagon! Las Vegas once Bistro C’s kitchen will be open all day for punters to take again plays host to one of the biggest clashes of the year with the advantage of breakfast, snacks, lunch…… and dinner if you’re battle for the World Lightweight Championship between Irishman planning on kicking on for a bit. Even if your’e the only UFC fan in the family, bring the rest of the tribe and keep them happy Conor McGregor and Russian born Khabib Nurmagomedov and out of your hair at Splash Waterpark, Bounce Trampoline (a name that’s difficult to spell correctly let alone pronounce so it’s Centre or Strike Indoor Bowling while you take advantage of no wonder fight billing tends to refer to him by first name only!) some uninterrupted viewing time! Cubby House Kids Club is Until earlier this year, the two rivals appeared to enjoy somewhat just a courtesy buggy ride away for any youngsters who require

a tad more attention and entertaining. With merely 60 days between the announcement of the clash and fight night early next month, the hype and hoopla has risen rapidly and many fight aficionados have fielded mixed reports as to who will have the upper hand…or foot for that matter! Will it be the Dagestan native with his unorthodox striking style and a title to defend? or the ‘Notorious’ Irishman previous champion of not one, but two weight divisions before opting out of the octagon for a two year hiatus? Whether it comes down to a clash of styles, striking distance or takedown defence one thing is for certain, this World Lightweight UFC Championship will be one to watch because for Khabib and Conor, it’s not just business…. it’s personal. See the UFC title fight all unfold on screen, as it happens at Finns Recreation Club from 10am, Sunday, October 7. FINNSRECCLUB.COM

I’ve written in a past column about how Facebook can be used in disasters or crises. Facebook has a reporting feature called Crisis Response, that allows people in areas affected by a crisis (natural disaster, extreme weather, shootings, terrorist attack, etc.) let friends and family know they’re safe, find or offer help and get the latest news and updates on the situation. The Lombok Earthquake Relief page is a private, nonpartisan effort to do the same thing. The administrative team running the page consists of 15 people, all based overseas, although one has a business in the Gili Islands. One team member is located in Italy, another in South Africa. They are not disaster experts: they are graphic designers, business owners and other professions. They all have a tie to Bali: several lived here for a time, one still has a business here, many have travelled to Bali as tourists. They ably demonstrate how people can use social media, even at a distance, to assist in a disaster. You don’t need to be on the ground to help. The Lombok Relief Page is designed to allow people to list any events or fundraising which benefi ts Lombok, contact people on the ground, coordinate donations, find friends or family in the area who may be affected and ask for and receive help. I recently spoke with several of the team admins and they filled me in on how the Facebook page began and where they see it heading in the future. “We have no clue as to the relevance of the information coming in,’ one team member told me. ‘Like AirBnB, we are just the platform, we don’t control what people do with it,’ he said. But, he said, ‘we know we’re being used by organizations, so [the page] is making a difference.’ The focus, according to the Administrative team, is on getting information out there and getting it to people who can act on it. ‘People ask me everyday about where they should send money. My answer changes every day depending on what area of need seems the most urgent at the moment,’ said the team member. ‘We assess needs almost daily and focus on different areas, depending on where need is greatest at that time.’ Being a grassroots effort, he said, the team running the page doesn’t have a personal agenda; they just want to be a portal for people sharing information and connecting. The team member said he wasn’t sure if the page has made a difference, (it has) but says the team will continue until there is better coordination available on social media. The page takes a lot of the team’s time, he told me, and no one is being compensated in any way. ‘We would like to back to our own lives, but at the moment, the team does feel it makes a difference. Its about being of service,’ he said. One of their best ideas was to set up a Google map where locations of people who still need help are highlighted. The team tells me that while they cannot tell tourists and ex-pats to go and volunteer in Lombok – it’s illegal, for starters – they do ask people who are enquiring about volunteering to fill out a questionnaire with the skills they have to offer and their professional background or training.

All the data from the questionnaires is stored on a Google sheet, which is made available to any NGOs or government agencies seeking volunteers or consultants. ‘If an NGO is seeking people with certain skills, they can have access to the sheet.’ The team trusts that NGO’s will operate in accordance with Indonesian regulations if or when they reach out to people who put themselves forward to volunteer, but the team don’t doesn’t get involved beyond passing on information. One man on the team I spoke with said the work they are doing is more vital than ever, as Lombok has largely fallen out of international news and coverage of the relief efforts are not reaching outside the country. The scale of the problem is massive, he said, with hundreds of thousands of people still homeless. International media often contacts the team running the page: ‘We want to leverage this contact exposure to make a difference, we want to be a voice for the people of Lombok,’ he said. C/BT/P-4 July 18

The group meets weekly online, through conferencing apps, to discuss what is or is not working on the page and how to make improvements. Recently, the team set up an online support group, using Google conferencing technology, where anyone connected to the disaster needing emotional support or relief can talk about their experience. A professional psychotherapist sits in on the conference. Often people on the ground in Lombok, both aid workers and victims, ‘need a space to cry, to vent, for anything that comes up,’ said the team member I spoke with. ‘If their need is too great, ‘ he said, ‘ We take the person offl ine and support them with professional help.’ As to the future of the Lombok Relief page, one of the team told me that ‘the group will change and evolve as the needs [on the ground] change. The name Disaster Relief will change to Reconstruction down the track,’ he said. ‘The focus then will be on how to get tourists back, how to get the jobs back.’ For example, there are campaigns over on the social media photo platform, Instagram, under the hash tags #IAmInBaliNow and #IAmInLombokNow, which allow tourists, visitors and ex-pats to post photos to help reassure people outside the country that its safe to travel to Bali, the Gilis and parts of Lombok again. I heard a story recently from a friend who works for IDEP (Indonesian Development Environment and Permaculture) that is working in Lombok to help victims of the disaster recover. She got into a conversation with a UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) representative who was there to survey the damage. He told her that one of the things he was responsible for was generating a map of where relief efforts had reached, and where they were still needed. ‘Don’t bother reinventing the wheel,’ my friend told him, ‘The Lombok Relief Facebook groups has already created a Google Map with all the information you’re asking about. Get it from them.’

BALI’S BE ST M ASSAGE S 20 1 8 The number one q uestion that I’m asked by tourists and people that I meet in Bali is “W here’s a good place to get a massage? ” After surrendering my body to the ministrations of numerous hands at a multitude of spas in Bali I have a pretty good idea of who offers not good massage but great massage. ( I know, somebody has to do it.) L uckily, it’s my favourite addiction - massage. I’ve selected some spas that really impressed me in the popular areas to keep everybody happy and highly recommend them.

W r i n k l y Fe e t The phone rang. “I’ve got wrinkly feet,” he said. “Try wearing wellies,” I said. “I do wear wellies,” he said. “Does it happen when the tide comes in?” I said. “Yes,” he said, “…..and when the tide goes out.” “Try standing above the high water mark.” “I don’t know anything about that, I am three miles away from the sea.” “Are your feet ever dry?” I said. “Only when I stand on the table,” he said “upstairs.” At this point, the cryptic conversation was interrupted by a sort of gurgling noise. “Sorry,” he said “a bit of water in my facemask.” ”Facemask” I prompted “did I catch you at an aquatic time?” “Oh no,” he said, “I’m just watching a bit of telly.” I was rather bemused. “I’ll come around and take a look.” I jumped in the car and soon arrived in front of a low lying house. Jeremy met me at the gate and invited me in. I donned the diving gear at the top of the front steps and finned my way carefully into the living room where Jeremy’s wife Enid sat knitting on a sofa. “Have a biscuit,” she said, “sorry but it’s a bit soggy.” It was the worst case of rising damp I had seen for quite a while. There are not many houses in Bali that don’t have rising damp. This doesn’t have to be the case, it is not difficult to prevent rising damp. Many years ago I came across a particularly bad case, serious rising damp that left the house very cold and damp inside. For years the owner had struggled and, with water on the brain and following the highly technical

advice of some passing collector of aluminium cans, he had both sides of the walls tiled to a metre above the fl oor. This had, in fact, made the rising damp worse, the contained water had risen even further and was damaging the walls half a metre above the top of the tiles. In the end, the problem was quickly and easily solved merely by understanding the problem and using a sensible solution. So what causes rising damp? It all comes down to capillary action, forget the physics all we need to know is that capillary action makes water get sucked into things such as blotting paper (remember that?), sponges, newspapers and biscuits. Capillary action is strong enough to suck water upwards and into very narrow cracks. Most walls in Indonesia are build using lightweight concrete “batako” blocks or red bricks. Both are very porous and soak up water faster than a thirsty camel. Walls are usually finished with a thin layer of cement “plaster.” Water soaks up through the ground below your house and into the fl oor or the bottom of the wall. It soaks up through the batako, brick, plaster or any cracks in the wall and usually reaches a height of around half a metre. It probably won’t rise higher than this because it gets to the point where the weight of the water becomes greater than the suction of the capillary action. Look around your house, if you find areas of blistering or fl aking paint and/or dampness along the lower section of your walls you probably have rising damp. If you have dampness higher up the wall this is probably not caused by rising damp. So how do we prevent rising damp? The standard method is to install a water barrier, commonly known as a “damp proof course,” through the bottom of the walls. This should

C/Ho/G-20 June 18

be done during house construction using a plasticised or bitumen impregnated tape which is installed 50 to 100 centimetres above fl oor level. Unfortunately, this is very rarely, if ever, done in Indonesia and suitable tape is very difficult to find. So how do we repair a house with rising damp? We need to cut a slot right through the bottom of the wall and install a water proof barrier. This can be done quickly and is not expensive but beware, as you can appreciate, you are cutting through a wall and this is not something you would trust to your average tukang who learned his inestimable construction skills selling nodding dogs at the traffic lights. This is specialist work and should only be carried out by people who know exactly what they are doing and who are using the correct materials. Finally, do not tile the wall and do not waterproof the wall, this will not solve the problem although it might put a large sum of money into the pocket of your driver’s neighbour’s uncle’s brother twice removed. The solution is to stop the water getting in while allowing the wall to breathe so that it can dry out.

Can Bali Survive on Tourism Alone?

While the present situation is not quite as dire as then we still need to ask if we have learned a lesson from these disasters. If we consider the tenacious efforts on the part of government and other stakeholders in the past 15 years to revive tourism and get back to or even surpass the level of business as usual – which was grandly successful judging by current tourist arrival statistics and the never let up of the building frenzy of new hotels and related tourist infrastructure – the superficial answer would be a resounding yes. However, we need to take a broader look and admit that all these revival efforts were mainly focused on getting the tourists back. Not much was created around the possibility that new disasters, whether natural or man-made, could dish up a repeat of the horrific situation Bali endured in the aftermath of the bombings. Now, with Mount Agung threatening to wake up from its seismic sleep and providing a very possible scenario of outburst that may shut Bali down once again and with the increased tectonic activity unleashed by the moving of the 4 continental plates that come together in the Indonesian archipelago potentially wreaking even greater havoc by causing earthquakes which, according to experts, are long overdue, we are faced with an all too realistic screen script of Bali being severely affected once again. Which entails the inevitable downturn of tourism business and its economically disastrous aftermath. Where does that leave us if these potential disasters come indeed to pass? What support system is there for the Balinese and expats alike who depend on tourism for their livelihood? What is there to take the place of income when tourism dollars no longer fall in your hands? When tourists, maybe even longterm expats living in Bali and sustaining its economy, leave in droves, not to come back for perhaps an extended time?

The recent slew of natural disasters befalling Bali in the form of volcano eruptions and earthquakes brought us face to face with a situation we experienced at the time of the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005 when tourism dried up faster than a shallow puddle in full tropical sun and the island shut down. The result was that many people, mainly the local inhabitants, suffered through the subsequent downturn in employment and the sudden decline of opportunities linked to tourism.

Has the government come up with alternative economies for Bali? Looking at all the ambitious projects in development or in the planning stage, it looks like they are mainly geared to tourism and not to the development of alternative livelihoods. Just check the list of current government projects in development: medical tourism, village tourism, retirement tourism, spiritual and yoga tourism, opening new cruise ports, MCI and other planning in that ilk. Let’s face it, all of these projects and planning are banking on crowds, which will disappear in a heartbeat if disaster strikes again. There are always alternatives, of course. Proverbially speaking, if Moses cannot go to the mountain, the mountain could come to Moses. Bali already has a vibrant arts and crafts scene that is superbly suited to pick up some slack by expanding exports. Bali’s unique culture can be parlayed in travelling shows, music, dance and theatre troupes travelling the world to show its attractions to the denizens of many countries. Our rice culture and other agricultural endeavours could sustain many families if exports were more encouraged. There are many nontourist focused opportunities, in particular the very promising side of Bali’s green and blue economies.

Since tourism is unarguably the biggest employer in Bali, that sector could do more to take better care of their workforce in case of a downturn. Instead of viewing the labour force as a never ending and easily replaced supply of working bodies, the employers should appreciate the skills and graces of these workers and provide better alternatives. How can they remain employed when their usual jobs are no longer in demand? Can the government come up with a better unemployment compensation scheme instead of leaving that responsibility to the employer in terms of providing hefty separation payouts? Bali’s Green Economy – In view of a possible future collapse of tourism, there are other opportunities for Balinese to explore and develop. The emphasis should shift to diversifying the economy before the mono-economy of tourism which is a risky an economic model in Bali’s present circumstances has stopped being beneficial to society or the environment, Small projects involving heritage rice culture are encouraging farmers to grow and

C/BM/G-4 July 18

market mangkok heritage rice. It is sustaining and viable on a small scale and could be even more so on an expanded scale if the government would actively support heritage rice exports. To diversify the Bali economy it is imperative to conserve and sustain a working landscape and to restructure agricultural production to secure greater economic equality and wellness for farmers. Besides, rice is not the only commodity ripe for export. Bali’s Blue Economy - Green is no longer the only new black; its other hue is blue because of the colour of the oceans and the sky. Apparently this concept that also closely meshes environmental and economic sustainability has been enthusiastically endorsed by the Indonesian government. The Blue Economy approach to business based on the principles of sustainability, nature’s efficiency, zero waste and social inclusiveness burst on the scene with the 2010 book of the same name by Gunter Pauli which, among other ideas, posits that the oceans hold the key to humanity’s future. Properly developed, managed and farmed they would provide myriad new jobs and income. In Bali, Nusa Penida and Lombok blue economy projects were started a few years ago featuring an integrated, upstream and downstream development program to cover tuna fisheries, aquaculture, marine tourism, salt and pearl industries. This blue economy with its motto of ‘borrow, use, return’ tries to make up for the deficiencies of the green economy. And since there is a lot of water in and around Indonesia, the government’s decision to pursue the blue-growth concept in marine fisheries could be quite strategic to overcome the poverty that has long existed in the coastal communities. The question is: are these programs alive and spawning the intended benefits or have they gone unceremoniously the way of so many other well-intentioned projects that ended up in the doldrums due to lack of sustainable funding, education and local support? Even when the green and blue economies are in a healthy and sustainable state, the question remains what to do about the people employed in the tourism sector in case of a whole scale downturn. Has anyone addressed this conundrum? If not, isn’t it high time to step up to the plate?

An Ubud Happy Chappy! Happy Chappy arrived on Jl. Braban, Kerobokan 4 years ago, the cuisine was basic Chinese, mainly Cantonese, with excellent attention to detail, an instant success. Simple food done well! That is the secret of success everywhere. These owners actually go to restaurants themselves, the number of items in each serve [dim sum] are clearly shown, all dishes can be ordered in small or large portions. Things you want to know when ordering for a number of people. In Bali you usually have to ask the waitress, who often does not even know the answer. With the immediate success of Happy Chappy Kerobokan it was decided to open a small outpost in Canggu, mainly to service the ever growing takeaway and home delivery clientele. They did not expect many customers to dine in, in fact the kitchen was larger than the dining area. They were wrong! Many evenings they had a full house, many diners preferring to eat local rather than face the ever increasing traffic chaos of Bali, so they moved it to a larger location. Now it is the turn for Ubud, and a small Happy Chappy has opened on Jln. Raya Ubud. The project has been in progress for almost one year and Ubud Happy Chappy fans have been waiting patiently for the opening day, which has now arrived. Dim Sum is the traditional Chinese starting point, particularly when the major cuisine is Cantonese as it is here. The choice is wide and varied. Perfect Har Gow, plump prawns wrapped in that translucent wheat starch ribbed dumpling. It is an item that is on every dim sum menu, and one that is not always done well [either over steamed or originating from the freezer]. Not so here at Happy Chappy, they are made fresh and then steamed to order, perfect! Pour some chilli or hoi sin sauce into the small provided dishes, stab a dumpling with your chop sticks and dip in the sauce of your choice, wonderful! Other steamed dumplings include Shu Mai [half moon shape filled with chicken & mushroom, a mix of pork and prawn or prawn & chicken or vegetarian of sweet corn & coriander], The Steamed Buns are stuffed with BBQ Pork, the only way to eat Bak Pao, no halal here! Other fillings include Peking Duck or Bok Choy & Tofu. Fried dim sum includes mini Spring Rolls, fillings include Prawn & Mango or Vegetarian. The dipping sauce is a mild chilli. Szechuan style Wontons can also be ordered deep fried [or steamed], the filling either pork or chicken. Other appetizers include many old fashioned and traditional ones, rarely seen in ’modern’ restaurants [most trying to be

too clever!]. Sesame Prawn Toast fingers with a soy-ginger dipping sauce, Prawn Butterfl y Cutlets, fl attened and crumbed, dip them in the lemon mayonnaise. One of the great Chinese entrees is Sang Choy Bow. Originally minced pigeon was used for this Cantonese classic but that has almost universally been replaced with chicken, one of the options here. At Happy Chappy you can also have it with Peking Duck, BBQ Pork or a Vegetarian mix, but for me the duck is the best choice. Using the cold crisp lettuce as a bowl, you spoon the mince into it and pour some sauce on top. When served with the usual iceberg lettuce, a messy dribble is often the result as you attempt to eat this wonderful combination. In Bali a different lettuce leaf has been found, cos lettuce. long thin and firm. It holds the mince and is perfect for eating without causing any disasters. I have been eating in restaurants, almost every day, for more years than I care to remember. However I am still often presented with something new. It can be just a very simple dish, and like this one, refreshingly different. Salt & Pepper Squid is on many menus, not only Chinese, in fact it almost seems to have become one of those dishes that must be on every ‘modern’ menu. I rarely order it as it is too often similar to chewing rubber. Hence, surprise and interest at finding Salt & Pepper Chicken on this menu, again it was a very simple dish, crumbed chicken pieces [tender but crunchy] tossed in salt, pepper and finely chopped garlic and herbs. It is so good you keep eating it throughout the meal [maybe even ordering another serve]. The mains are old and traditional; Cantonese roasts, rice/ noodles or specials. Every suburban Chinese restaurant anywhere in the world serves these old common dishes, kids are raised on them; Sweet & Sour Pork, Lemon Chicken and Crispy Skin Chicken. All come from the Happy Chappy kitchen expertly prepared and cooked, simple food, done well!

here the Kung Pao is great [pictured]. If you want something more sweet then order the Lemon Chicken. A special menu for children keeps them happy. There is a choice of three dishes, with smaller serves, all with mini spring rolls as a starter. Happy Chappy Ubud is much more than just a pickup and takeaway place. In Australia there is a ‘local’ Chinese restaurant in almost every town, no matter how small. For the residents of Canggu & Berawa, now Ubud as well, Happy Chappy is their local, and they love it!

Cantonese Roasts are unique, whether they be duck [with plum sauce], Chicken [with that crispy skin], or Pork Belly. All served traditionally, on the bone. Char Siu is one of my all time favourites, strips of lean pork seasoned with honey, 5 spice, fermented bean curd, soy and hoisin. These days in the food courts of Singapore they are usually dry and boring but at Happy Chappy, perfect. All roast duck and chicken courses can be ordered as half or full bird. Noodles are every which way! Chow Mein are wheat fl our noodles stir-fried with Chinese style vegetables and your choice of chicken, beef, prawn & fish or pork. The Japanese Ramen Noodles are also served, but in a broth of soy and chilli with roast pork or chicken with dumplings, beef and mushrooms. Fried Rice and how you eat it tells where you are from. The Chinese use it as a final course, alone, to cleanse the palate. Westerners tend to eat it with the meals instead of steamed rice. Special meals are anything done different, Kung Pao Chicken [more international style without the fire of Szechuan pepper and peppercorns] is on every menu but

steakhouse, although it is a very good one, it also does breakfast. You can go healthy with the Dragon Bowl [dragon fruit, banana blossom, raspberry puree, honey, milk, granola and fresh fruits] or Smashed Avocado on Toast [avocado with poached egg, pickled onion, cucumber, feta cheese and burnt lemon. exotic with Smoked Salmon on Sourdough [with lemon whipped cream cheese, capers and shallots], more normal with Pancakes, Spanish Omelette, Benedict or Steak & Eggs. Then there is the traditional; eggs, bacon, sausage, potato, etc in the Big Boy [single] or the Big Boy Platter for two, with the lot. My pick is called the Breakfast Run, a dry aged black Angus beef patty topped with bacon, egg and a lemon emulsion. All the steaks here are either grain or grass fed and imported from either the USA or Australia, dry aged on the premises [which you can see at their various stages of aging in the glass fronted room just inside the entrance] for up to 28 days; striploin, rib eye, tenderloin, porterhouse or just left still on the rib bone. Great coffee too!

Blanco par Mandif continues to amaze at their impressive ‘hanging off the cliff’ restaurant under the car park of the Antonio Blanco Museum, Tjampuhan, Ubud. Fine dining options with 7 and 9 course degustation menus that are also available with wine pairing. The undoubted kitchen skills of chef Mandif are on display with exotic dishes such as the Yellow Curry of Calf Brain and Tiger Prawns with cassava leaves or the 21 day aged Peking Duck. Finish with the Coconut Tart [with cinnamon custard, raisins and rum] An experience to remember.

Layang Layang is beachfront at The Fairmont, Sanur [Jln. Kesumasari]. Their Sunday Lobster Brunch has become the type of event that people travel for from afar. It is a buffet but with other courses that can be ordered off the menu [all inclusive price].

Warung Bule & Susy is simple and popular. Found on Jln. Pintas Slligita, Nusa Dua,

it serves cheap food without any fuss. They serve Indonesian cuisine, eaten mainly by non-Indonesians. Sup Kepala Ikan is hot and spicy. The soup that many go here for, normally made from fish head but can also be ordered made from fish fillet. Many seafood options including a Fish Curry that is also very popular, as is the Red Rice.

Warung Chef Bagus, hidden away on Jln. Bakung Sari, in Kuta, specialises in Ribs. It is a busy little place, good value with excellent service. The Ribs are usually excellent but a word of warning about Ribs in general, Ribs are now such an integral part of so many menus in Bali that product supply is a major problem and as a result product quality can vary from day to day at the same place.

Kilo Bali is making its way on Jln, Drupadi, Seminyak, a seemingly difficult street for restaurants [judging by the many failures of even good restaurants to survive here over recent years]. Kilo Bali is an outpost for the highly successful KiIo in Kallang, Singapore. Though Kilo is quite unique as the owner is not Singaporean but from Puerto Rico which accounts for the intriguing menu. Divided into unusual sections the RAW includes a Wasabi Tuna Tartare [with avocado, sesame, shallots and chives], Spicy Salmon Sashimi [chilli fl akes, mint and toasted rice], and Salmon Sushi Roll [crisp chicken skin, spiced mayonnaise, sesame, chives]. WARM includes a Chilli Prawn Pizza [tiger prawns, chilli padi and basil] Prawn Ravioli [with Sake butter cream] and Zucchini Pancakes [with goat cheese, parmesan and a balsamic glaze]. The COMFORT section of the menu has Pork Belly cooked for 24 hours served with a sweet purple potato mash and spring onions, Baked Salmon [wasabi mash, mushrooms, sesame and asparagus], Salt-Crusted Snapper [in a Saffron sauce] and a Wagyu steak for the meat lovers. VEG sides include a Roasted Beetroot Salad, Grilled Baby Romaine [quince and aged Parmesan] and Furikake Corn [nori, bonito, sesame and wasabi mayonnaise]. The final section SWEETS has Strawberries, marinated and served with basil ice cream. Pistacchio Cake with crème fraiche and lemon. Something completely different! Cocoon, Jln. Double Six at Blue Ocean Beach, Legian, is already taking bookings for their

Crumb and Coaster is a glass house on Jln. Benesari. Popular for breakfast, which

is served all day, as it should be. Great Corn Fritters served with an avocado salsa and baby spinach, Thai sweet chilli, add bacon and/or scrambled eggs. UWRF is a celebration of contemporary writing and related arts, a networking and workshopping boon to regional writers and readers, and a massively effective draw for Indonesian talents into global readership. Now in its 15th gathering, Founder and Director Janet deNeefe is asked to take stock of the festival’s progress.

3. This year’s theme Jagadhita (loosely translated to English as ‘the world we create’) has a connotation of an individual’s desire to enact positive change in a large scale. Is this activism, Bali-style? I think Balinese have always been compassionate people and tend to take care of the community in which they live so it’s only natural they are embracing activism in a more public way. Those of the young generation are also questioning their world more than ever. Balinese speakers who will explore Jagadhita are Saras Dewi (Denpasar philosophy professor, activist and songwriter), Jango Pramartha (founder of BogBog cartoon magazine), and the creator of our 2018 artwork, Budi Agung Kuswara. International speakers include Clemantine Wamiriya (Rwanda), Jill Stark (Australia) and of course our headliner, Ndaba Mandela (South Africa), Neslon Mandela’s grandson. 4. Has anything in the festival’s history surprised you? We have become hugely popular among writers around the world and UWRF is now a Festival many are clamoring to be invited to. That’s a nice surprise. With a huge chunk of our international audience being Australian, we have become true ambassadors in people-to-people diplomacy between Australia and Indonesia. I can think of no other cross-cultural event that achieves this in such a meaningful way. 5. Have you noticed some lasting benefits to the immediate community? Of course, it provides a huge economic boost in a time when tourism is at a low and it has also provided a platform for Balinese people simply to be heard. From cultural to environmental issues, our audience learns more about Bali at every Festival.

1. Is the festival fulfilling its original purpose? It has definitely fulfilled its purpose of putting Ubud on the literary map, both nationally and internationally, and of sparking interest in Indonesian literature. People are now sitting up and taking notice. The Festival was created as a healing project after the first Bali bombings, to draw tourists back to the island. It was to be a platform for Indonesian writers and artists to share their work with the world. Last year, 85% of our international audience traveled to Ubud specifically for the Festival. It’s become an annual pilgrimage for lovers of words and ideas, a meaningful cross-cultural connection. 2. Has the festival changed much? I think the road map of the Festival has remained the same; like ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ What has changed is that it has grown a hundred fold. There is simply more of everything – more panels, more films, more performances, more events, more speakers, more audience diversity and much bigger attendance numbers!

6. UWRF always feels like so much more than a book fair. Did you expect that to happen? Some people say the UWRF is really a human rights festival posing as a writer’s festival. And, yes, given that we were born from an act of terrorism, that was always the plan. 7. What’s evolved from your umbrella organization, the Mudra Swari Saraswati Foundation? Part of our Yayasan’s mission is to help young Indonesians to reach their potential through educational programs. Proceeds from ticket sales are used to cover free workshops for local children, high school students and their teachers, and to subsidize attendance of local residents who could not otherwise afford to attend. We’re proud to offer our Children and Youth Program for free each year. Finally, for those in need, we conduct workshops, and provide books and writing and art materials, as we did for young Gunung Agung evacuees last year.

C/U/G-26 Sept. 18

After the recent deadly earthquakes in Lombok, we’ve held fundraising events, and when people purchase Festival tickets they have the option of donating to local NGO IDEP Foundation’s Lombok Earthquake Emergency Response. 8. Art and performance events still a festival mainstay? There are of course many free music performances planned, and we have a new area on the festival grounds dedicated to poetry and artistic expression. One of our nights will be a musical exploration of our theme. 9. What has your emerging writers program accomplished? As one of our 2016 Emerging Writers, Azri Zakkiyah, declared, “UWRF was like the first link in my international writing journey. It makes me feel like I am a true international author.” Our Emerging Writers program has helped launch the career of many young Indonesian writers. The fact that we translate their work for our Annual Bilingual Anthology has spotlighted many writers from remote regions who would otherwise remain relatively unknown internationally. Emerging Writers really is the fl agship program of our Yayasan. If readers would like to be involved, and help a young Indonesian share their story with the world, then please consider being part of our 2018 Indonesian Writers Patron Program. Spaces are still available. Contact our Partnership Manager Saraswati Ratnanggana via saras@ yayasansaraswati.org for all the info. 10. What’s the state of publishing in Indonesia today and where does UWRF fit in with that? I think it speaks volumes that Indonesia is the focus country at the London Book Fair next year. Most Festival visitors in the early days said they knew nothing about Indonesian writers, and this has slowly changed over the years. 11. Any new venues this year? We’re excited to be working with DUMBO, the new little sister of Elephant, which is very close to the Festival Hub. DUMBO is hosting a Book Launch and an Art Exhibition. Check the website for all the details! Bali Advertiser readers can save 20% on the 4-Day Pass by entering the promo code MPBA at the online checkout. International coastal cleanup activity held in Bali

Local News

The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) cooperated with the Ocean Conservancy Institution from the United States and Bali`s regional government to hold an international coastal cleanup activity in Indonesia`s island resort of Bali, Saturday. “The KKP welcomes the cooperation with the Ocean Conservancy Institution to invite various stakeholders to participate in an activity that has a real and direct impact on our coastal and marine environment through the Love of the Ocean Movement,” KKP Director of Marine Space Management Brahmantya Satyamurti Poerwadi remarked here on Saturday. The KKP, Bali regional government, Ocean Conservancy Institution, Non-Governmental Organizations, and a total of 1,287 volunteers gathered at the Padang Galak Beach in Bali on Saturday and managed to collect as much as 841.53 kilograms of garbage. The collected waste will then be recorded in the Ocean Conservancy Sea Waste Index, the largest marine waste database in the world. Thousands of similar coastal cleanup activities will also be held simultaneously across the world. At least 91 locations across Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke also participated in the so-called simultaneous “Sea Facing” activities. The activities, initiated by the KKP along with various civil society organizations and the local government, involved approximately 50 thousand participants and managed to collect some 360 tons of marine and coastal waste. In addition to clearing waste from the coastal areas, they conducted mangrove planting, coral transplantation, and salt harvesting, as well as provided diving goggles to children and released fish and turtle seeds into the sea. Poerwadi remarked that the handling of marine waste will continue through various activities that can reach more people. “Collaboration with organizations, such as Ocean Conservancy, is helpful for the Indonesian government`s efforts in managing sustainable marine resources, especially in overcoming the problem of plastic waste at sea,” he added. Indonesia increasing import duties on alcoholic beverages and a host of consumer goods Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani has made the decision to slow the importation of alcoholic beverages by increasing importation taxes (PPh Impor) applied to such products. CNN Indonesia, reports that Ministerial Decree Number 110 of 2018 stipulates a 7.5% tax be applied on alcoholic beverages. The increased “new” import tax will apply on wine, sake, brandy, whiskey, vodka, arak and bitters. At the same time, the Government has announced a list of 1,147 consumer products that will also be subject to import taxes. The amount of tax on these consumer good will vary between 2.5 – 10% in order to curb imports while at the same time the Government is promising to monitor instances when the new import tax will represent a negative impact on the local economy where imported goods are needed in the production of domestic products. Meanwhile, Commerce Secretary Enggartiasto Lukta has told the press that in addition to the increased import taxes the Government is taking other steps to curb imports, including changing from a system of “post-border” inspection of imported goods, such as steel and alcoholic beverages, to inspection at the actual border entry points. Two Finish tourists suffer consequences of committing religious outrage during visit to Batukaru temple in Tabanan Wide segments of Balinese society were angered and outraged when a picture of a foreign tourist was uploaded to the Internet showing a man sitting on an altar (palinggigh) at Bali’s sacred Luhur Batukaru Temple in Tabanan. Balinese society observes strict rules and protocols on behavior, dress, and physical condition for those visiting religious sites. After the Finnish tourist’s picture went viral on the Internet police and members of the community sought to identify the subject of the photo. The man, Jarvi Tony Kristian (37), and his traveling companion, Jouni Kalevi (50), were eventually traced down to their original accommodation at the Bali Villa Nirwana Soka Room in Tabanan and then, after a change of hotel, to the Bali Wirasana in Sanur. The men were brought to the Tabanan Police Station where police mediated a meeting with the traditional village chief of Wangaya and a group of religious leaders. Kristian and Kalevi offered their sincere apologies for any offence given to the Balinese and agreed to undertake an upacara guru piduka purification ritual. The ceremony was set for Monday, September 17, 2018 (Soma Kliwon Wayang) and will be underwritten at a cost of Rp. 15 million by the two men. The two travelers turned themselves into a South Denpasar police station on Saturday, September 15th claiming they were worried by threats posted to their Instagram Account. To ensure the men’s safety, police from South Denpasar escorted them to the Tabanan Police Station where mediation discussions were convened. As reported by NusaBali, during the mediation the men apologized and explained they were unaware that their actions had offended the religious sensibilities of the Balinese. The offending photograph was taken at around 3:00 pm on Monday, September 9, 2018. They said they registered at the gate of the temple, paying a Rp. 10,000 admissions fee, and were given a sarong and traditional headdress to wear during their visit. Police sources said they investigating to determine if any actual crime was committed by the men. The Tabanan Police Chief has called on those in charge of religious sites to carefully monitor visitors and provide registered and experienced guides to avoid a reoccurrence of the September 9th incident. Separately, the Deputy-governor of Bali, Tjokorda Artha Ardhana Sukawati, also called for better control and supervision of Balinese temples and for clear instructions and information to be given to tourist visitors. Rupiah not yet stable despite slight appreciation: Bank Indonesia

The Indonesian rupiah has not stabilized and there is a risk the currency could fall further due to trade war tension, a deputy governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) said Friday (14/09). Deputy Governor Dody Budi Waluyo told reporters BI was still “guarding the rupiah’s exchange rate” although the currency has appreciated slightly to 14,820 a dollar at 12:55 p.m. on Friday, from 14,940 last week - its lowest level in 20 years. External conditions continue to be a risk that could further weaken the rupiah, Dody said, adding that the U.S.-China trade war poses more of a risk than contagion from crises in Argentina and Turkey, which is easier to predict. “We still see the exchange rate as not yet stable and is far from its fundamentals,” he said, adding that BI will combine interest rate policy with currency intervention and allow gradual falls in the rupiah to manage the volatility. BI has raised interest rates four times since mid-May to defend the rupiah. [Reuters September 14, 2018] Indonesia to lower overseas online shopping limit to $75 The Finance Ministry’s Customs and Excise Office has issued a regulation to lower the import limit for online shopping to only US$75 from the initial $100. “The new regulation will take effect on Oct. 10,” said its director general, Heru Pambudi, in Jakarta on Monday as reported by kompas.com. He said the policy was stated in Finance Minister Regulation No 112/PMK.04/2018 on the amendment of Finance Minister Regulation No. 182/PMK.04/2016 on imported goods through delivery. Heru explained the regulation was issued to prevent the splitting of imported goods worth more than $100. He said his office found that certain importers purchased goods online worth $20,000 by splitting them into 400 transactions worth $100 each. “Our aim is to prevent it from becoming a trend.” To make the new regulation enforceable, Heri said, his office had applied an anti-splitting smart system with certain algorithms to validate and verify parcels sent from abroad. He added that it would also integrate the application system to other applications related to manifest closures, appeal systems and to review the regulation’s enforcement. [The Jakarta Post September 18, 2018] 8 suspects arrested over violent beating leaving university student dead in Denpasar Eight suspects have been brought into custody for questioning over the death of a Bali university student who was violently assaulted in Denpasar on Monday. Umbu Wedo Gaunglahlo was found brutally beaten in front of a minimarket on Jl. Raya Pemogan in Bali’s capital city Denpasar in the early hours of Monday morning. He was rushed for medical treatment, but succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital. It was originally believed that the 19-year-old was a convenience store employee, but local media has revealed that the teen was actually a university student and at the store to make a purchase. “The victim turned out to be a student, not a minimarket employee and was following ospek (student orientation),” Bali Post quoted an unidentified source as saying on Thursday. “The trigger (of the attack) was a traffic accident,” the source said. The victim unintentionally crashed into a parked motorbike of a local youth hanging out at the minimarket. This did not go over well. The owner of the bike that Gaunglahlo crashed into, called his friends and together they ganged up on the victim. Criminal Investigation Unit Insp. Hadimastika confirmed that the suspects have been arrested in connection with the young man’s death and that they are still being questioned. “We are still developing the case,” Hadimastika told Bali Post. [Coconuts Bali September 7, 2018] Indonesia’s Go-Jek seeks to raise $2 bln for Southeast Asia expansion Indonesian ride-hailing firm Go-Jek aims to raise about $2 billion from existing investors, including Tencent Holdings Ltd and JD.com, to fund its expansion plans in Southeast Asia, sources familiar with the matter said on Monday. Go-Jek’s fundraising comes as its main rival Singapore-based Grab is also building a war chest to transform itself into a consumer technology group and aggressively grow in Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. Go-Jek declined to comment. There was no immediate response from Tencent and JD.com when contacted by Reuters. Go-Jek founder and CEO Nadiem Makarim told Reuters last month the company was seeing strong funding interest from its backers as it targets an aggressive expansion. [Reuters September 17, 2018] Sick New Zealand woman Abby Hartley stuck in Bali has died The New Zealand woman who fell ill while holidaying in Bali has died, after her family appealed to the Government to bring her home, The AM Show revealed. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she’s “gutted” mother-of-two Abby Hartley wasn’t able to make it back to New Zealand, telling The AM Show on Tuesday: “I wish I was in a position to have helped.” But she said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) deals with “roughly 200 plus cases of medical emergencies or medical situations every year, and about 3000 New Zealanders are helped every year abroad.” “The really sad thing is that this isn’t an isolated case in assisting New Zealanders overseas,” she said, adding, “There will no doubt be other cases where someone will have sought this kind of assistance.” Also appearing on The AM Show, ACT leader David Seymour called it a “tragedy” that could have been prevented by cutting government spending. “One of the consequences of that is that the Government finds itself less able to help people in genuine unexpected need and people who give... are less able to do that because so much of their money is paid in tax.” Abby Hartley, 41, was rushed into hospital at the beginning of August after falling ill on her first day in Bali, Indonesia, while on her second honeymoon with husband Richard. [NewsHub September 11, 2018] Two Chinese tourists saved from drowning at devil tears ‘blow hole” at Nusa Lembongan Devil Tears “blow hole” on Nusa Lembongan nearly became the scene of a double tragedy on Friday, September 7, 2018, when two Chinese tourists, Li Wei Jun (30) and Zhi Hong (35), nearly drowned after falling from the cliff-side at the popular tourist site. As reported by Tribun-Bali.com the two tourists were busy making a “selfie” when they fell 5-meters into the tumultuous waters at 6:45 am after being struck by a large wave. Fortunately, bystanders came to the assistance of the two by throwing flotation devices and pulling them to safety. The victims were brought to the East Medical Care Office in the Village of Lembongan where they received medical treatment, including attention to cuts and scrapes suffered when they fell down the rock face, and then released to return to the mainland at 9:00 am. Gongs in Bali Part III

What is characteristic about Balinese gongs? The two common types of materials for gong making are bronze and iron, with the former being more prestigious and therefore a lot more expensive. Although there are a number of iron gong makers in Bali, since the early 1980s, no bronze gongs larger than around 40 cm have been made here. Now all new Balinese gongs are imported from Java. Balinese tell me that the reason why Balinese no longer make large gongs is an economic one since it takes 10 workers to forge one large gong and the salaries in Bali are considerably higher than those in Java. When looking at differences between Balinese gongs and others in Indonesia (for the purpose of this article I’m going to focus on the island with the largest gong production, which is Java), I’m going to look at only on hanging gongs with bosses. The common shape of a Balinese gong is a little different from a Javanese one and this is particularly noticeable in the boss region where a Balinese boss is less pronounced (you see this feature in West Javanese gongs too so sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference). Both original Balinese and Sundanese gongs have less depth in the body of them. All of this is connected to the sound: in Bali a quick wave vibration is preferred whereas typically in Java the vibration is slow and rounded. This refl ects the speed of the music and also the way the gongs are used. In Javanese music, where the gong is played at the end of the piece, the rest of the ensemble finishes first (on time) and the gong plays just slightly afterwards: here the gong is suited to be slower and very deep. In Bali, the opposite is true: gongs are played exactly on the beat, and often in quick succession so, with the exception of one or two ensembles, gongs are never very deep: certainly not like the largest ones needed for Javanese music. The larger the gong, the lower the sound: the largest type of Javanese gong (referred to as ‘gong ageng’ meaning big gong) is more than a metre in diameter, whereas in Bali the largest I’ve seen used is 83-85 centimetres (referred to as ‘gong wadon’ meaning female gong). The sound of a gong is very important to a Balinese, both sonically and magically – I’ll explain this in my next edition of Kulture Kid.
